NYTimes: US and Global News Comments & Reviews 2026

Ads+Poor Design = Unusable App. If I could rate this a ‘zero’, I would. Sadly, the user experience really is THAT bad. I’ve been using the Times app for several years, and while the journalism is as always very good, the usability of the app has degraded over time (both the iPad and iPhone versions). The website version is better, possibly because everything loads so much faster, and navigation with the larger screen real estate is better, but it’s still ad-heavy. I know it’s tempting to push timelines on app development, and it can be challenging working with the 3rd party developers I’m sure have been used here. BUT, proper user testing is a MUST because if it’s not done right you’ll damage your Equity. Not just the Equity of the app, but the NYTimes equity - because apps are now the face of many organization! And for every low-rated review there are at least 10 or more upset users! Most don’t bother to write a review, and potentially a decent fraction will leave as subscribers. I want the Times to succeed - we desperately need good journalism in these times. Please read and heed the (low-rated) reviews on this site; don’t just look at the numbers!

Missing a few KEY features. Love the content on here, I wish there were follow or favorite feature so we can follow/favorite a specific writer, get notifications for when they publish a new article, have a link to their work, or something like that. This would also help in writer exposure as well users can easily refer back to previous articles by them. Also, I love the bookmarks feature, but if there were a way to separate bookmarks into different folders, playlists, or categories, that would be great. I would let users easily index and access any old bookmarks they’ve saved without having to endlessly scroll through every bookmark they’ve ever saved. Newspaper readers typically subscribe for years, imagine the amount of bookmarks they save per year; please give us a folders feature. I don’t know if these features are available on the browser version but they are not in the mobile version. This app has great content but lacks user individualization.

Great writing & research but has issues. The New York Times is by far the smartest and most well written newspaper in the U.S. Its editors and writers work hard to avoid bias as well as the xenophobia that plagues most coastal media, which writes dismissively about the center portion of the country. But I have two quibbles and I feel they are strong ones. First, NYT works so hard at being fair that it can try to find a logic or reason where there is none. I frequently read their articles referring to Donald Trump and his “strategy” or “policy,” when he has neither. Not every yin has a yang. Just because there is a reasonable nature in some does not mean there is the same in their opponent. Second, I do understand the trying nature of running a newspaper in today’s cyber economy but I don’t appreciate buying a subscription and then finding different aspects of the paper behind another pay wall. I saw a sports story I was eager to read but I was told that I must pay for the additional sports coverage, which I will not do because, as much a master as it is with news and politics, the Times is the nation’s worst sports paper. The sports writing is neither comprehensive (not even close!) nor well-examined or written. So, I expect to get the few piddly sports stories they offer in my subscription. Same goes for recipes! The Times is still the best and I love getting it.

Overall great - one suggestion. I like the app overall. I like I can scroll through headlines and have the various categories of news across the top. I have access to the games which I love to do with my morning coffee. One suggestion is to give access to the previous puzzles. I was working on the Sunday crossword and was 63% complete when I clicked out of it to look at something else. When I went back in, it only shows Monday’s puzzle. It’s only 7:30 on Sunday night and I can’t finish the puzzle. I read somewhere the puzzles reset at 5 pm in the weekends. I don’t know if it’s different on the NYTimes games app but this is very disappointing and frustrating. My days are busy. My “puzzle time” is early morning and evening. Please either start the reset later or give access to the previous day’s puzzles to give more time to complete the puzzles. Thanks for your consideration.

So annoying. I love The NY Times. Their app, however, is frustrating. It takes a long time to load all content. As you are skimming headlines and about to click on an article into which you want to dive deeper, an ad or image somewhere further up or down the page will load, and the article you were about to read disappears up or down the screen, with no indication as to what direction. You then have to scroll to find it again, during which time something else may load and throw you off the trail again. Or, you find the article and as your finger homes in on it, the screen reshuffles and you instead click on a different article, perhaps about the secret lives of dustbins or Wirecutter's favorite spoonrests for under $100, and you then have to wait for that article to load before backing out to the main page to resume your hunt for content actually of interest to you, and nab it before it flees. This happens multiple times every time I open the app. For the amount of money I spend on my unlimited subscription, it is inexcusable.

More ads than text. How many ads can you jam onto a page? Sooooo many, apparently. The same ad, over and over and over. Guys, if I don’t engage the first time, I’m not engaging the 25th time, either. Banner ads aren’t much more than blocks of color the eye skips over—take it from me, I’m in advertising, they don’t work—but MAN those blocks get annoying when they’re stacked right after each paragraph of text. Today I read the Times through my browser just so I could use Reader View. You want to push everyone in that direction? So no one ever sees any ads at all? Maybe just try fewer ads so resorting to Reader View doesn’t become a trend. Another thing—the blocks of links to other stories, BEFORE the end of the story I’m reading. So many times I think, wow, weird end to this article, then I realize it’s not the end, there’s another paragraph or two after links to 50 other articles. Super annoying. You don’t want people to finish the current article? You think my attention is that short? You know how bad you have to get for me to interrupt my morning, come to the App Store, and write this review? Seriously bad. I expect more of The NY Times.

Needs better usability. For me, the most annoying usability issue has to do with having recently moved the “back” button from the top left of the screen to the bottom left. An iPad is held like a book, you hold it in your left hand, click on a title with your right index or middle finger, and after some reading you press your left thumb on the “back” button to return to the main page. That’s how browsers work, as well as many well designed apps. Not the Times! They expect your left thumb to be at the bottom of the page. Other usability problems involve a non smooth page layout, where the page jumps up and down as marketing ads expand and collapse. This was much worse in my older, slower iPad, but even in my new 4th gen iPad the issue happens quite often, particularly when facing a weak internet reception.

Tremendous loss of functionality. The iPhone app has recently undergone a tremendous loss of functionality through their elimination of sidebars and pop-ups to allow you to go to the section that you want. You now have to endless scroll and scroll and scroll and scroll to the bottom for you to hit the section you want to read. It’s almost equivalent to being in a mall in the perfume department and wanting to get to another department and not only not knowing where to go but having to walk forever and a day to get there. I am not sure why the design department did this, but it is a bad move! If I didn’t love to NYTimes so much I would unsubscribe because now the app is almost useless unless you want the top 3 stories. Maybe most people only want the top 3 stories. But if that is so it’s a sad sign of our culture and the demise of democracy. Bring back the navigation that makes it so we do not have to scroll! Show that you believe that people actually READ articles other than the top 3! Believe in people again NYTimes!

Disappointed. Used to love this app but various “upgrades” over the years have degraded the app. The most recent was to relocate the “back” button to the lower left from the upper left. This is a horrible location for use on an iPad in landscape mode and isn’t much better on an iPhone in portrait mode. Given that 90% of the population is right handed and that, as far as I know, most people have thumbs directed upward when holding a phone or tablet, moving this critical button to the lower left makes for a very awkward and non ergonomic movement. I am clueless as to how this was supposed to “enhance” my experience with the app. I’ve despised it from day one and continue to do so. I also echo other’s criticism of the constant “adjusting/movement” of text, stories and pictures as new ad content loads while you scroll down, thus moving a story or picture you were focused on out of your field of view. This is very annoying when you’re about to click on a story to read the full article.

Functional app. But no way to follow columns.. Very functional app (more buggy lately on my iPad, but a minor annoyance). I appreciate the varied views (Today, Sections, For You). Nonetheless, I read NYT digitally only, almost always through my ios app, and I feel I miss a lot of what I’d like to read because of this. I dutifully read the front-section national & intl news, skim op-ed headlines, but I most look forward to other sections (esp science, books, education, and cooking). I wish I cd follow particular columns, which I miss frequently and end up needing to search for. For example, I often miss the biweekly Crime books review: though I look at the Books section 2-3 times each week, I rarely see that column in the stories that appear. Trilobites shows up often in the For You feed, but I often discover other recent pieces only in end-of-article links. And I dislike the sometimes out-of-publication-date order of articles in Sections view. Where are the small stories on the book biz, the aforementioned Crimes book column, the book comic? I don’t understand why I see them only intermittently. Recently, I often skip the Today view and go to Sections—Today’s Paper to see everything. Sort of a pain to push through the default layout, then (the bug that never goes away) do the required bounce to Sections, then to another tab, then back to Sections to get the display to appear, then finally open Today’s paper.

Millennial going for print. I have been a New York Times subscriber for digital and weekend print edition for almost 12 years now. I have always liked their news coverage, opinions, articles about everyday stuff that I could believe could be so interesting, Mini crossword, and almost everything they publish. But in the past few years the online version has become addictive and the way they seem to do it is by taping in the outrageous feeling and then suggests more articles like it. It’s very draining to feeling that way day in and day out. I can’t believe I come back to get more of it. I feel some articles have become to click-baity. That should not be the way to customer engagement and keeping them there longer.I don’t like that my attention is being used this way by a product that I pay for. Weekend with the print edition is so much better no way going down a rabbit hole and can stay away from the comments. I feel I’m in more control of the time I spent reading print. But I guess print won’t last beyond a few more years. Sigh!

Disappointing Experience. I am grossly disappointed with NYT. I held a very high opinion of NYT, believing that buying a subscription would be easy and that, if I ever needed to contact CS, it would be a pleasant, professional experience. It has not been either. My subscription apparently hasn't been honoured and when I tried to reach out to someone about it, CS was non-existent—I never got an e-mail back about my inquiry despite waiting several days for a reply... but I got an e-mail asking about my recent experience with CS and how NYT can improve. Isn't that friggin' hilarious. I am just generally and genuinely shocked by how I've been treated by a news establishment of NYT's standards. I guess it was naive of me to expect a lot more. I will always be a fan of their journalism, the quality of which I think cannot be denied. But this whole experience has left me feeling so, so very frustrated and—above all—disappointed. I feel like I haven't been seen or heard at all by them. I just wanted so badly to enjoy their journalism and support an establishment I respect. But I feel left out in the cold.

Please stop “improving”. Why you find the need to keep moving things around is terribly irritating. This update now has the controls at the bottom of the page. And, I haven’t even gotten to the Sections feature to see how that has been scrambled. If you were interested in truly improving the app and user experience, wouldn’t you create a Preferences section where the user could set the reading or browsing experience to a style that suits oneself and never have to put up with these “improvements”? One more thing…the little gift icon has an info balloon that informs us that now we can gift 10 articles a month for free. Being that the 10 articles a month rule already existed and was accomplished by using the send icon that was formerly at the top of the page, the addition of the gift icon seems like a gratuitous and confusing addition. As does the COVID icon. Wouldn’t that be in Sections?

Your political coverage is the worst ever. You have normalized the illegal behavior of Donald Trump, and normalized his lies and his Attack on truth itself. You are no longer a newspaper in any meaningful sense. The only people who are doing good work at the paper right now are in the editorial section. If Donald Trump becomes president again, it will be a disaster for the country and it’ll be a particular disaster for the New York Times and the free press. And to a great extent, it will be your fault. If you want to start doing real work, you’ll begin by attaching the words convicted, felon, and adjudicated rapist and business fraud every time you mention Trump‘s name. That’s the reality. Treating a person who attempted a violent coup against the government of the United States, and has for the last four years undermined the entire idea of the Democratic process with lies and crimes, and the party that has embraced him, as normal political actors is itself an attack on our democracy. I have nothing but contempt for everyone in a decision-making capacity at the times right now. Your coverage of Trump for the last nine years has been a journalistic atrocity. Harlan Rotblatt, subscriber

Double Billed & Refuses to cancel my Sub. I have tried for more than a year to cancel my paid subscription and NY Times refuses to do anything. In fact, this month I was billed 4x my agreed rate of $4/month. I have been double charged every month ($8/month) for more than a year and this month I paid $16. I have called, used chat, logged in online to cancel yet every month, without fail, I’m billed again. I asked my bank to issue a stop payment and even that has somehow had not helped. Granted, the stop payment was issued only a week or two ago when I discovered the quadruple charge but that payment still managed to slip through and post to my account. I’ve read online that many, many people experience the same issue. How do they keep accurate accounting books when my single subscription of $4 is actually collecting at least twice that amount? I’m certainly not the only person with this issue so how are they working their books? I have no doubt that many more people are being charged but have no idea because just like me, it’s rather easy to overlook an $8 charge each month. It’s fascinating just how far NY Times has fallen in recent decades.

Missing important feature. If you’re younger than 40, you can skip this review. I check the New York Times news feed on the app, or on my computer web browser at least once a day. It goes without saying that the New York Times reporters and staff do a great job reporting the news (well, great job most of the time). But a huge missing feature is the ability to view today’s paper in the format of the printed edition, similar to other American city newspapers Apps. I don’t always want the latest news, sometimes I just want to read today’s paper, and I want to view it in the format of the printed edition. Yes, the app does have a section titled today’s paper, and you can scroll through all the articles, and that format is perfectly fine for people that wish to view it in that format, but for goodness sake, on the weekend I really just like sipping my coffee and looking at the paper, in the old fashion format, even if it is on my iPad screen. Yes, I tried actual weekend home delivery, but where I live home delivery was pretty horrible so we stopped that. p.s. Good luck trying to find a location in the app that allows you to actually provide them feedback like this.

Great news and cultural coverage, sometimes laggy app. Subscribers should not be served ads. We all know NYT is one of the best newspapers, if not the best - despite opinion being on the front page. My only complaint is that when NYT doesn’t like something, they can obsess over it and remind us constantly. Currently, these things are remote work, generative AI, and the Barbie movie. You will see a lot of “articles” warning us about these things. If you can see past that sort of behavior, they have great content. Real Estate, Arts, Cooking, product recommendations are all there and high-quality. Subscribers should not have to see ads in the app. The app hangs frequently and makes every phone I’ve used it on hot. I can watch it draining my battery in real time. This is an issue that needs to be addressed - it has been going on for years now and is a problem I’ve heard from others. The app refuses to respond to input for seconds at a time, randomly. Asking for a subscription fee and showing ads anyway is a very bad practice.

“Subscribe to read the article”. I love the New York Times , when I grow up my goal will be to get in the newspaper company. I downloaded the app today hoping it would bring me motivation and would give me a nice motto . I felt really good about this because it’s basically all I ever read . I decided to get in the app for a while and save some articles for later , some minutes passed and I had to subscribe to read the articles. I got so mad because I love the New York Times. I know I can still read the articles in safari but what’s the fun in that. Why do we need to pay to read articles anyway. It’s like having to pay a lot to get a newspaper. I understand a app is different but I have seen billions of other newspaper apps in which you don’t have to pay. The subscription is also too expensive , why have a subscription anyway. I hope someone reads this and makes a change in the app because seriously I’m crying in the inside. When I got the subscription thing I felt as if someone stabbed me in the back. It just feels like an excruciating thing , I really hope I can get this to be read so this trepidation stops.

Completely miserable app - No dark mode!. It is simply inexcusable that the New York Times has not taken the time to develop a dark mode for its app. There have been requests for years. All falling on deaf ears. This is not a stylistic preference, but I need for people who cannot because of their medical conditions, stare into a blinding light. You would think that the New York Times would care about this and make a change. Update the app. How hard can it be! I’m a big fan of the New York Times as a news service, but this lack of consideration is just outrageous. Hey New York Times, listen to your people! I am now getting my news from other sources, that have dark mode, like the Los Angeles times, because the New York Times has simply failed to listen to my cries, and the cries of many others, who are asking over and over and over and over and over and over and over again to have a dark mode. You’re going to lose subscribers New York Times, and all because of this? If the situation is not fixed in the next couple months, this will go viral. Please just fix it, or people will exit.

NYT can do better than this. I’m on a fast WiFi connection and an iPhone X with the latest OS. When I open the NYT app it takes 3-5 seconds to open. Then after another 3-5 seconds the top story reloads to a different story. I end up having to wait up to ten seconds to even begin reading, and after a jarring experience. I really love NYT and want to support it, but the iOS app is sub-par, especially when compared to the Washington Post app. I read both daily, but find myself always reading the WP first because the app experience and news layout is so much better. The NYT should be able to do at least as well, but the app is chronically a laggard. I’m boggled that an organization as large, esteemed and technically savvy as the NYT cant get this right and actually lead all the others. I actually worry about what it implies for the organization’s success, because I want it to succeed. If I ever have to reduce my subscriptions to only one major news organization, at this point it would be the WP. It would have been the NYT two years ago.

New Update is Garbage. The latest update has rendered the app basically unusable for the content I want to easily see and use. 1. Sections tab is gone replace by an upper scroll bar that is tedious to navigate and makes me hunt for content. Sections is now the very LAST tab of this scroll ribbon. Wirecutter and the athletic (which I have zero interest in) are first. Sorry, but sports and shopping should be at the bottom of everything. Period. The old Sections tab also gave more content at a glance which brought me to articles I might not have otherwise seen. Now you have to hunt thru the various sections. 2. The new “You” tab is junk. Pushes content I don’t want to see. You can customize this is limited ways that aren’t helpful. For example, you can add individual opinion columnists, but not the Opinion section. You can add certain columns but not paper sections. 3. Games interface is now unusable. Any past crossword or game now opens in a browser window (requiring you to login again) and I can’t find any way to change this. I don’t want to play past games in a browser window, nor do I want to be forced to play in the separate Games app. Please bring back the old Sections tab and fix the functionality of games!

Love the Authenticity. I listen to and appreciate The Daily almost Daily. I love the clarity, the insight, the journalistic deep dives and professionalism but the thing I like best is when Michael and his team laugh, make minor side comments or open up, letting us hear the sometimes imperfect process of how the podcast gets made. The episode of Oct 18, 2019, “The Week Diplomats Broke their Silence” is one of my favorites because it was recorded in hallways and stolen corners of the US Capitol. The authentic sounds and banter make it more real, more alive. I listened to every single name of the credits more closely than ever because Michael read them while walking out of the US Capitol building, out of breath, while carrying equipment! I laughed when he uttered, “Thank god for automatic doors”, most interesting credits ever! It’s also remarkable that they wrapped at 9:45pm and the episode was cut and prepped and up by 6am the next morning. Hurray for The Daily!

World Class News and App. NYT News app in the morning and throughout the day; NYT Games when I take a break; NYT Cooking for dinner inspiration; NYT Audio while I cook. Besides messages, browser, and phone, really doesn’t need any other apps 😁 The News app seems nearly flawless to me. The Today screen does freeze up once in a while, and you need to tap a different tab to wake it up. Other than that it’s easy to navigate, save articles, and find recommendations. I appreciate that the main news feed is not influenced by your personal engagement with stories. I feel that self-curated news contributes to our problem of people not being able to agree on basic facts, so it’s important to me to see everything that’s happening rather than just things that pique my interest.

Frustrating and annoying. I'm a NYT subscriber and I've used this app since it was first released. However, I'm on the verge of deleting it. The advertising is now so intrusive and persistent that I spend almost as much time reading articles as I do avoiding the ads that take over the bottom or entire screen at random intervals. I now dread opening this app because I know what awaits. UPDATE Now, I find out that updating the app wipes out all the Favorites I had set within the app (articles and sections). They know about the problem but don't mention it unless you complain. UPDATE 2/1/24 The app is still incredibly unstable compared to ever other app that I use. I have to delete it completely and reinstall it periodically to help it stay functional. About half the time the app screen will just freeze when you first open it. Great journalism deserves better than this poor excuse for an app.

Find in article. Still waiting for return of your “Find” in article feature. Not sure why you removed it. Is it not possible to add a feature allowing your readers to search within an article? Imagine reading an article that references numerous names of key individuals, typically clarified early in an article by providing their full names and their context to the story. Maybe I’m not like most people in that I don’t memorize all that info up front. As the story reads on somewhere paragraphs below one of the earlier named persons is referenced by last name only. And I think, “who is this person? Oh crap no search or find feature in the app.” Now I have to scroll back up the article, losing my reading place, scanning for the name to recall who the person is so I can better understand the context. What a disappointment? How can we live in a digital news world and have news apps that do not provide to their readers one of the very first features we all found useful in the early days of the web, “search”. Come now? No excuse I think. Make our lives easier. Is there no “design thinking” inherent in your designs? Of no search maybe offer hypertext links to key names, words that pop up with the important context. That’d be awesome! Of course, I suspect that’s more complicated to implement than simple in-article search.

Good content. Poor UI design. Great content. Used to be a great app It’s essentially a browser for the Times, but the designers have unlearned what web browser developers have learned over the past decade. The app constantly moves things around as you scroll, meaning you have to just sit and wait for it to update dynamically, while stories move up, down, left, right. It’s unusable during this update process, which could be several seconds, depending on your network connection. Now they have moved the back button to the bottom. Do they really think they know more about UI design than Google, Apple, etc? My fingers are always in the more central part of the screen. Reaching up is natural - reaching down is not, especially since your hand covers the bottom area. You must back up your whole hand to use the back button, which is very awkward. It’s clear the app developers are not experienced enough to out-engineer the likes of Google and Apple. What’s worse is they lack the wisdom to recognize that fact and it’s up to us users to gently rein them in. Please change the update behavior so that it mostly happens behind the scenes with minimal screen updates. Also, move the back arrow to the top. Also, re-enable pinch to zoom for pictures. In short, make the app more like Chrome or Safari. Thank you for your attention

The app no longer runs under older iOSs or on older devices! Shame on you, NYT!. 1️⃣ THE NY TIMES DELIBERATELY BROKE ITS OWN APP! They now *require* you to update your device to the latest iOS. The problem is that cuts off users using older iPhones or running older iOSs. 2️⃣ Many of us are hanging onto to wonderfully functional, good devices for longer; others choose not to upgrade their iOS concerned it will hamper performance or shorten battery life. 3️⃣ WE'RE PAID NYT SUBSCRIBERS… Have been for years. We have several iPhones from only a couple of years ago. They can no longer get the news. WE CAN NO LONGER ACCESS SAVED STORIES! 4️⃣ Going to the website is a poor substitute. The app automatically keeps stories on the device for reading on the go. The website does not. THIS IS DIRTY POOL! 5️⃣ We have many other apps, even ones released years ago, that still run fine. Other companies have released new versions of their apps, but still let you keep running the older ones if you'd like. But not the NYT! 6️⃣ Of all the apps we use, this is the only one to deliberately stop working. It's only the NY Times that has blocked their app from working on older devices or under older iOSs. 7️⃣ PLEASE RELENT. SUPPORT YOUR CUSTOMERS. LET OLDER VERSIONS WORK!

Good but Saving Articles needs Improvement. Daily user of this app. Mostly love it. I use the little flag/bookmark on articles which I think is meant to “save for later” but accessing those articles is like it’s own version of a NYT Games puzzle. I would love a more robust and accessible article “storage” so I don’t neglect to read the articles that I started, got interrupted while reading, but couldn’t easily find days later (or forgot I wanted to read/finish). Also… was there a time when the iPhone app worked in landscape mode or am I crazy? And: how wonderful would it be (for readers) if they could reach out to an article’s author without having to have a Twitter account? Maybe that’s by design. I mean I for one know I hate email now. But I’ve tried to contact writers after an especially moving or inspiring article I read only to see my efforts disappear into the ether. Would love to see a way that makes communication more possible without worsening the experience for writers (perhaps impossible).

When Dark Mode?. I read the NYT multiple times daily. I love the app and how it presents both plain text articles and rich interactive content seamlessly. I’ve been patiently waiting for the Times team to incorporate an iOS dark mode feature for a YEAR now (that’s when Apple released the native functionality). C’mon developer team? I’d imagine it’s an issue with interactive content not showing as intended or something, but It’s literally just inverting the background! At a minimum, this should be an option for regular-way articles. Whomever is reading this at NYT — you...YES, you! Listen up! I represent your most loyal readers, and I nominate YOU to make this your personal pet project for 2020. Run it up the internal ladder and make it happen, please! This way we can continue reading without waking our partners with a pocket sunbeam in hand. It’s just practical. I hate to compare, but it’s worth noting that WaPo has had dark mode for years now.

Could be better. The NYT: Too many articles and opinion pieces are repeated. In fact—there are too many opinions and personal experiences. (Do you really want to know what someone is doing on their weekend?) Today, at least, when I clicked on The Weekender, elven articles were shown but I couldn’t’ access any of them (most were repeat articles). After listening to a song from a review article; a small white box appeared that I don’t know how to get rid of it. If you want to read the Times, the audio articles are not appealing and can be distracting if you are in a public place. Beware of the Wirecutter reviews, like most such evaluations, they don’t have a large selection of brands and may miss better products plus some of their evaluation criteria is too narrow. The coverage of Congress seems based on what is controversial and seldom reports on new laws that may be very relevant to business and/or citizens.

Wanted to love this app. Hated it.. This app loaded my phone with so much adware and tracking software that my phone would frequently crash and lag. I was confused about why my phone had gotten so much slower and less stable and then I realized theses problems only surfaced after I had downloaded the NYT app. I deleted the app and bookmarked NYT’s mobile site to my home screen instead and now the problems are gone. NYT is pulling some really shady dat collection and advertising tricks with this app, and the UI is terrible to boot. This app also has a bug that makes it very easy to accidentally click on ads. This is annoying because it minimizes the article I’m reading and redirects me to the webpage of whatever company’s ad I just accidentally clicked on. I really hope this is just a bug, and that the developer will fix it, but I can’t help but think that this “bug” positively influences the developer’s revenue for ad’s that are paid for on a pay per click basis, and that at best this means they have no incentive to lose money by fixing it, and at worst they are aware of it and using it to fraudulently extract extra revenue from their advertisers. Overall, I’m very disappointed with the experience this app provides. The quality of NYT’s content is well worth the $1/week subscription cost, but it isn’t worth all of the problems this app causes and the personal data/privacy concerns that come with this app are worrying to say the least.

Great journalism, mediocre app. Look, it’s The NY Times so the articles are generally thoughtful, abundant, and well written. The app, on the other hand, is just a spinning wheel half the time I open it. It needs to be redesigned with the size of the payload in mind. The today tab has become bloated with too much content which takes ages to fully load. The app seems like it tries to lazy load sections to account for this but given all the rich content (photos, videos, ads) and the short lifespan of that content it still takes a long to render the whole tab and the order in which things load seems arbitrary. On top of that, the containers can’t predict the height of the content which hasn’t yet loaded meaning the page height jumps around as content shows up. The information architecture either needs to be redesigned and broken into more more discrete sections to reduce the page size or the app needs to change the way it fetches content (e.g. using fixed height containers, making separate calls for semantic and media content to speed up perceived load time). This would probably have the second order effect of improving ad performance since the ads frequently fail to render by the time I’ve give up on the app loading.

Ads for paid subscriptions????. I quite understand the need to support NYT journalism with advertising on the paper version (which itself involves costs) and on the unpaid version of the news app/website. However, to bloat every single article viewed through a digital subscription with multiple advertisements is a true disservice to loyal subscribers. It is all the more disturbing because under previous versions the platform was ad-free and more complete (i.e. archive access?). Thus NYT digital subscribers now pay exactly the same amount each month for a service that has considerably worsened over time. The majority of other news apps do not include advertising in the “premium”/ paid subscription versions of their applications. I have been a NYT reader for many years, and I am happy to contribute monetarily to the important journalistic work this paper does. However, there must be a better way, that is less offensive to the paper’s subscribers! Please return to the previous ad-free approach for digital subscriptions.

Only works sporadically, can’t zoom, not intuitive. I use a VPN (a mainstream, widely available one) and many apps/sites don’t load properly. NYT’s app is odd because it works occasionally, but not usually—I don’t know if this is because of the VPN or if the app is just bad (but it seems to have a bunch of positive reviews so maybe it’s just me?). When I click on a push notification, it opens the app but only goes to the last article that was open, even if it was several weeks ago. Not useful. Then, if I search for the story, it only sometimes loads. I usually end up just using the website or relying on the morning briefing newsletter (so why am I paying for a subscription??). Another annoying aspect of the app is that you can’t zoom in on photos—I find myself doing this a lot on the website because there are interesting things to see and the phone screen is so small; it’s always a frustrating surprise when I try to zoom on the app and nothing happens. Aside from those specific issues, I also find it a little confusing/unintuitive how to find specific stories. Maybe I should be able to answer some questions about what interests me, and then it curates my home page based on my self-reported likes and my past views/reads. I could then use the “sections” page as a backup. Obviously NYT is the gold standard of journalism, but I’m surprised and irritated every time I remember how bad their app is. The app does look nice—I guess that’s worth +1 star.

Saying no to sports alerts does NOT work. I use this app quite a lot, including getting alerts for major news stories. And there are granular settings for what kind of alert category do you want on versus off. But they DON’T REALLY WORK the way you would like! I like to avoid sports events spoilers because I watch those events later. So in the settings I have turned off Sports and Olympics alerts. Nevertheless, this app keeps sending me spoiler alerts for the most important events… exactly the ones I do not want to hear about!! And I don’t want to have to turn off all of my alerts, because I still want to know if a war breaks out, for example. So how about it NYT? If the user says no Olympics alerts, then don’t send them the latest results for Katie Ledecky, Simone Biles, etc! Perhaps I’m getting these because you consider them to be “major” general news stories, but don’t! Just categorize them as Olympics or Sports only, so that people who say no to those type of alerts won’t be spoiled. PRETTY PLEASE?? p.s. Do that and I promise to increase my rating from 2 stars to 4 or 5 stars. :)

Changed from 5-star to 1-star because they ruined the interface. In Jun 2021, the NY Times app was dumbly changed for the worse to move app navigation controls to the bottom of the screen. Unlike every other app where the Back button is in the top left corner, they have made it unintuitive and moved it to the lower left. This is awful design; it’s awful for customer experience; it’s awful for customer satisfaction. Yeah, maybe this seems like a small thing, but if they had better designers and/or product owners they should have realized this poorly thought out change was neither smart nor convenient, which actually makes it a big thing every single time their readers hit the wrong spot on the screen when they want to go back. Before this, the app was fantastic. So come on, please, fix this defect in the next sprint.

Used the app for years, less happy its current form. I have used the app for more than a decade. I haven’t always liked the layout, but I work around it to get to my favorites. The recent version has “Today’s news” and “Section” at the bottom that helps navigate. There is a huge amount of material available everyday, so navigating is crucial. Recently the news summary has disappeared from the top of the screen. I am sorry to see it go. My greatest complaint is that the current app is extremely dependent on a high quality WiFi connection. Previously I could download the day’s news, get on a plane or train, and go to airplane mode but still read the paper. No more! While I read the app is constantly updating. The text jiggles as it adds a photo or alters text. There are times it gets caught in a loop and the jiggle produces a blur of movement. So I have to close the app and start again. Some years ago the developers had allowed an old version to continue but eventually force the switch to the new app. I wish I could go back to that previous version as it was stable even when there were issues with the internet.

Can’t swipe to advance to the next article. As a 30+ year subscriber to the New York Times, I wholeheartedly see it as an excellent newspaper and applaud its commitment to professional journalism. Insofar as the journalistic content delivered through the app, I give it 5-stars. That said, the design of the app needs some fine tuning. It is not as intuitive as other apps. I also subscribe to The Washington Post, the Financial Times, The Guardian, and The Wall Street Journal. Each of those apps offers a smoother user experience. But the most important difference between the NYT app and each of those other news apps is that the NYT app doesn’t permit swiping from one article to the next. Once I finish an article, I need to hit the app’s back button and manually select the next article. This makes the app cumbersome, particularly when I’m attempting to read the entire paper. What is concerning is why the app is set up this way. I can only assume that swiping from one article to the next doesn’t provide the Times with the click data it is looking for, either about me and my reading preferences or so that it can better track clicks of an article by all readers. Either way, the inability to swipe between articles has me relying on the other news apps as my primary news apps, with the Times as a secondary app. Dear New York Times, please correct this.

Please Fix the Software. I love that I can have this app on my Ipad. I love having access to the interesting articles and also some of the games. Being able to read articles in a large font is wonderful because my eyes get fatigued when I try to read the actual hard copy of the newspaper. I have loved the Spelling Bee game. It was a little hard for me at first because the font was so small and I could not change it, but I could still get through. However, with the latest update, the font is now so huge the larger words run in to each other, making it difficult to read them. Not only that, trying to scroll through the word list from Yesterday is sometimes impossible. When it does work, the font is so large that some of the large words are cut off. Why even have a list if a person cannot view each and every word on it? Also, the Help section no longer works. One must scroll in order to read all of it but the scrolling does not work. So there is not much help here. Please fix this. It was not broken before the update so for now, I am giving the app only one star.

No dark mode; primitive search capabilities. The lack of dark mode is an anachronism. As someone who checks the news late at night and early in the morning, the lack of dark mode means that I simply go to other sources of news. I’ve even uninstalled NYTimes on the iPad that I use in bed. Seriously, get a dark mode. This feature has been part of iOS for over a year now, and it’s absence in the NYTimes app is a bit embarrassing. This app requires iOS 13 already, so there’s no excuse for not supporting dark mode. Also, the search feature in the app is borderline unusable. The web search allows you to specify the sort order, filter criteria, etc. The in app search feature offers none of this. It’s crazy that when I’m searching for news (with an emphasis on “new”) and the search results are an incomprehensible listing of old articles. So the “I saw an article a few days ago about x, let me find that article again” is practically impossible to do in the app.

Slow. Complex. Hard to Use.. This app is slow to load pages and slow to scroll through pages. Advertisements always load first, and their fancy animations sometimes seem to bog my device down, preventing the rest of the page from loading. My device is a little older, but not so old that it is out of date. It is plenty speedy when using other apps. If the device is a problem, the app should compensate by loading simpler pages and a simpler interface. The app is complex. It is hard to find some articles and sections. It used to be easier to navigate, but an update made it less user-friendly. My theory is that the engineers who work on this app have gotten out of control, and are adding all the fancy bells and whistles they can, unconstrained by anyone who advocates for ease of use and speed. This used to be a great app, but it has been gradually going downhill for a while now, for the reasons noted above. The content is great, and I subscribe to the NYT to read their newspaper, but the decline of the app is pushing me more and more to read in a browser on a computer, rather than via the app. Update: today, all I see is a spinning activity widget. The app does not load at all.

Great Content, Terrible Ad Tracking. UPDATE: I tried the app again, thinking maybe i was being too harsh. Nope, the advertisements are actually worse now. meaning, there are more ads now then there were when i wrote the below review. I actually showed this to a friend who was amazed this is a paid subscription. The same animated ad is inserted between every 3 paragraphs. Honestly, I would pay MORE if the ads would just go away altogether as they completely take-away from the reading experience. Just charge me more so I can read the news in peace please. Original Review: As mentioned by many others, the content is the best in the world. Unfortunately it is served alongside insidious ad tracking that follows one from the web and into the app. Expect to see the same ad inserted between every 3rd paragraph, over and over and over. I hope you liked that book you searched for online because you will see ads for it all day using this app. Creepy, and unnecessary for a newspaper, especially one that writes article against "super cookies and advertising platforms". This is a paid subscription, not a free product. I expect no ads, or at the very least, less of them. I'm keeping my subscription to the best newspaper in the world, but i'm deleting this app and will read online, where I can block the ads and receive a much better reading experience, which of course is the point.

Worst app on my phone. This app is too expensive for the amount of glitches one constantly has to navigate- Scrolling is always stuck-the bottom half is always missing -except for the ads and the games section at the bottom. Also I watch a lot of movies and series -so I like to read the reviews-however NYT reviews don’t turn up in the search unless they are recent releases and if you search for a review via Google-you only get a minimal amount of “free” reads before it locks you out and says that you have to subscribe to the NYT to read a review any further-but I DO subscribe-and there’s no option to enter my info-so access to entertainment reviews that aren’t current-doesn’t exist-I’ve contacted support about this but no answer has been offered- Soooo ya the most user-unfriendly subscription that is on my phone P.S. I don’t understand why access to the recipes is an additional charge for subscribers when you can just Google the NYT recipe and it pop rights up Thanks for the chance to rant

New version embarrassing, hard to navigate, simplistic & commercialized.. In agreement with cackalack007: Yes, do fix if you can that historically and still-useless search function which still but much worse is Interrupting editorial content with advertisement: that just screams “sellout.” Present offers seem restrained enough, but we all know it’s only a matter of time before detergents and acne-cures (and worse) make their disgusting appearance, no doubt complete with stomach-turning photos. The Times has finally degraded the grey lady of yesterday to just another raucous eye-popper, as if we can’t find this display anywhere on line. Perfect for a Times Square marquee, but for the “paper of record?” I’ve been a loyal subscriber since grad school, back in the 1960s. Stereotype me if you will, but it is with much regret that I mourn the loss of dignity and clarity, and the cheapening of a mature and restrained editorial voice. I may stay for a while for the Saturday puzzle, at least until that too gets a more “popular” re-make... Sadly, Don Yates San Francisco, CA I did not write any of the above response (tho as a decades-long subscriber I don’t see any reason to disagree w/it). Big DITTO! DY

Shame on NYT. Slow, buggy, freezes without explanation, hard to navigate, not the complete newspaper, no offline capabilities. The list of the app deficiencies goes on and on. This has nothing to do with the content of the newspaper itself (which at times seems questionable, eg Wirecutter … really are we expected to believe these product ‘reviews’ are anything more than the personal preferences of a few writers)? The app is a daily reminder to this many-decades subscriber to the NYT to question why he continues his subscription. Update: (Dec 13, 2023) Even more awful with each update. Previous comment focused on deficiencies. Now it just doesn’t work. If an Ad doesn’t download immediately, the App freezes in place and doesn’t allow scrolling beyond. Browsers solved this problem 25 years ago. Just an awfully designed and implemented piece of SW. Update (Apr 25, 2024) App performance steadily moving downhill. Technique of providing News in real-time update fashion broken. App keeps revising view such that reading is impossible. Completely dysfunctional performance, App should never have been released in this shape.

My Life With the New York Times. I didn’t discover the NYT until 1960 and my sophomore year in high school when it was our textbook for Problems in American Democracy. We’d fold the paper in fourths and then in half, in order to do the crossword puzzle during biology class. When Dr. Haskell “caught” my friend doing the puzzle, his only reprimand was that real players do it in ink. She has, ever since. That paper lost some of its size but none of its nobility. I’ve moved from New York City to Colorado and have gradually altered the version of the Times that I read. For awhile we got only the Sunday edition in print and now we read it all on the app. I read the NYT everyday and it’s often the first thing I see when I awaken. I do Spelling Bee, Wordle and Connections before I get out of bed. I can define chapters of my life with the version of the Times that I’m currently reading. I love this newspaper.

Terrible. The previous app was far, far better than the new one. Slow and inefficient to use (regardless of any claimed improvement in download speed). Simply mindless. For example, if you want to read an op-Ed that isn’t included in “Top Stories”, you have to click on “Sections”, which never works on the first try; go back to “Top Stories”, then click “Sections” again. This finally gives a choice of sections; for whatever reason, this back and forth process happens every time I try to use “Sections”. When you finally get to “Sections”, you click “Opinions “, which takes you to a list of opinions. But, often all you get is the opinion headline, with no indication of the author. (Yesterday, I don’t think any of the headlines had an associated author, today some do.) Ridiculous. I never want to be bothered with a Maureen Dowd opinion, but I never want to miss a Gail Collins opinion (unless she’s writing with Bret Stephens). Why make readers hunt like this for the info that they want? Didn’t have to do this with the prior app. Stupid, stupid, stupid. NYT might as well have hired someone to sabotage the app experience; sure as hell didn’t get someone to improve the experience. Disgusting!

Convenience and Fun. I rely on the Times as a trusted source of news. I know what care the Times journalists exert to get the story right. The app is a very convenient portal to all that, but it also brings other parts of the Times to my attention: smaller stories that delight and entertain me. Plus if I need more background on a story or I don’t understand a reference, the embedded links usually make following up very easy. Then there are the games. I’m addicted. I have to do the Spelling Bee, Wordle, and the amazing Crossword every day. Well, every day that affords me the time. If I’m current on the crosswords and I have an appetite for more, I can work my way backward in the Crossword archive. They are all so clever and satisfying and available with a few clicks in the app. I have to admit that I seldom go to the printed version anymore. The app is just too well-organized and convenient. I make an exception for the Science Times, which I like to hold in my hands, and the front page when there is a really big story.

This App Desperately Needs a Night Mode Display Option. I love the NYT, so this mediocre rating is simply due to the usability/customizability of the app. There is no night mode, which just feels a little behind the times in terms of the various display options that have now become standard in most phone & tablet apps. I also personally wish there was slightly more customizability in terms of being able to block or hide certain categories of articles from appearing. For example, although we can choose what subjects we are interested in, which will then show up in the “For You” section, I would also love the option of telling the app what NOT to show me when scrolling through the main feed. For me specifically, I don’t like reading Opinion pieces and will never open them, so it’d be great for me in terms of usability if I could just have the app “hide” those when I’m scrolling through (or hide the entire Opinion section). Other people may never read the Entertainment section, or the sports section, etc., so perhaps they’d like to be able to scroll through the main “Today” section without seeing those. It would just be a nice, extra option that could continue to help shape the content to what each reader enjoys the most.

NYTimes are you even using this app?!?. I love NYTimes’ content. I start and end my day with it. I’m proud to pay to support independent, critical coverage in journalism. However, you really need to try out your app in real life. I build mobile apps for a living and would get fired if I prioritized ads in my product over usability. It’s not that this app doesn’t work, but the inmates (ads) are running the asylum here. It’s impossible to scroll and peruse content while the screen updates, shifts, and goes blank to comically load content. You don’t even cache the ads between reading an article and going back to the front page view because they load all over again. I seriously laughed when I read some other reviews and they called it pinballing, and that they got seasick while using this app. So true! I get it, making an app is hard, especially with competing demands for the business and new features. And that your team are humans, work hard and care. But really, this has gone too far. You need to take a step back, start listening to your users and take real steps to make the app work for its primary usecase - reading the frickin’ news! And add dark mode already, it’s called a stylesheet!

Good app! Dark theme needed. Overall this is a good app, and there’s nothing bad about it. However, I would love to have an option to turn the articles into dark mode, since I prefer to read a bit before going to sleep!

Clear and easy. A well-designed app that delivers the media of this world class news outfit in digestible formats using different forms of media. Well done!

Couldn’t login so had to cancel subscription. I’ve been a subscriber to the NYT for years. But over the past few weeks when I try to use the app it keeps trying to force me to join up and provides no option for me to login with my existing ID. Since I can no longer access content - I’ve had no choice but to cancel my subscription. So long NYT.

Section choice removed. The latest version of the app does not allow the user to change the sequence of the sections. Why? Using the app has become tedious so I use it less. Please reinstate this feature.

Subscription rabbit hole scam. I have decided a few months ago to cancel my subscription and to my surprise I noticed today I kept getting charged for the same “cancelled” subscription. I tried to access my profile to see if I did something wrong or at least remove my preferred payment method and can’t access my profile due to a “technical issue”. I have not once received any email about whether the subscriptions was cancelled/renewed/continued

NYT always delivers. Would not be without the New York Times. It always delivers well balanced good journalism from reporters who are clearly passionate about their work.

Dark mode needed. Love the simplicity of this app. But really wish you had a dark mode for my night time reading. Even with my screen completely dimmed the app is too bright.

Better than anything in Australia. I live in Melbourne Australia The NYT gives me far better balanced coverage of world events than any of my local national newspapers Your articles particularly on the Middle East conflict give me information that would not be published in Australia Not being a Trump supporter I still value the different perspectives on the US elections

Make swiping great again. Please change the app to make swiping back from articles easier. Hard to press the tiny back button. Otherwise, brilliant app!

WARNING: subscription via Apple login does not work. Be careful attempting to subscribe by logging in to the NYT app using your Apple login (the “Continue with Apple”) button. I bought an all-access subscription this way, but received only the basic subscription. When I contacted the NYT help center, they told me they don’t have access to Apple’s servers and have no way to see what I bought, so they refused to fulfil the all-access subscription and advised me to ask Apple for a refund. Needless to say, I don’t have time to pursue Apple for a refund it will surely not provide anyway; my suggestion that the NYT withdraw the functionality to subscribe using an Apple login until it has fixed this issue fell on the help centre’s deaf ears. So the money is wasted. I do not know whether the same problem would exist if you tried to subscribe using the “Continue with Google” or “Continue with Facebook” buttons, but I would advise against trying, lest you also lose your money.

New format is annoying. The recent update means you can no longer swipe through your favourite, saved sections. Instead you have to keep clicking back and forward through screens, which is a crappy user experience. Really odd change.

Latest update makes save article function N/A. Content wise, very good. But the latest update has made the ‘save article’ function not available when I am scrolling. The app was much better with the save function in the top right corner of the screen. Please fix this for better user experience.

Encourages electronic waste and planned obsolescence. By making the app work only on iOS 16 or later, NYT makes it unusable on iPads only a few years old, that Apple calls ‘vintage’. Apple refuses to provide iOS16 on vintage iPads, even if working perfectly, in order to encourage new sales. This would not be a problem, except that the NYT collaborates in this environmental lunacy by their current app policy. It can’t be that hard to provide an app that works with an older iOS, as there are zero useful features relevant to the NYT in iOS16. However, the NYT policy is to encourage planned obsolescence, working hand in glove with Apple. This is an anti-customer, anti-environment and anti-earth policy, at a time when we should be trying to stop these obvious mistakes: Apple is rich enough not to need extra sales, and the earth benefits when gadgets last longer.

Good journalism but.... Great stories and content but... the app’s ads cause freezes or glitches. Also when I tried to cancel my subscription, which they claim you can cancel at anytime... I was not able to without having to email support, which took days to get back to me only to tell me they couldn’t cancel my account.

Do NOT Subscribe. I live in South Australia, and subscribed to this service to access an article for a university paper. The process of unsubscribing is so complicated - instead of giving users the option to tick “unsubscribe” it is expected you call a service centre? It’s 2019. I just want to tick a box and know I will no longer be paying for a service I don’t need or make use of. Stop making it purposely difficult to suspend payments. Disgusting.

Subscriber left without access at no notice by App update. No access due to 'App update since [I] last used it'. THIS AFTERNOON Tapped the 'T' to open the app, was redirected to the App Store because 'the App has been updated since I last used' it. Not more that eight hours earlier. AAaaaaand... Nope. Nothing. I'm sorry that my iPad mini 4 doesn't use iOS16, which is required as of... a few hours ago? If we could upgrade our tech as often as wanted we could all hang out together. Or am I being offered a taste of 2024 USA with this, what... digital apartheid? Digital Exclusivity by Income? Has the New York Times digitally abandoned me in a News (York Times) desert? No warning? No water? No paper?

A Flawed Resource. The New York Times can be relied upon to back major US government policies including ones that are wrong, such as the 2003 invasion of Iraq and the current genocide in Gaza. The corrections and apologies may come much later, but the damage has, of course, been done. Nevertheless, the paper does do much high-quality journalism and has tremendous archives accessible to subscribers dating back into the 19th century.

IAP Issue. A user can subscribe to two Basic subscriptions at the same time - the only difference is that one has a free trial and the other doesn’t. The promo offers the free trial while inside the app it offers subscriptions without a free trial Maybe you should hide the subscription option inside the app if the user has signed up to a subscription already?

Unfortunately, biased.. It’s a sad day when a publication that has had so much respect, gets a low one star review, from a hopeful yet continually disappointed pundit. Your coverage of the Middle East has been detrimentally lacking. And biased. You regularly omit *critical* pieces of the puzzle, leaving readers and viewers with a distorted picture of that region. It is not the West, and the incessant attempts at observing it through a Western lens has infantilised its inhabitants. Then there’s the fact, this and other publications have contributed to and played down radicalisation in the West, in support of terrorism, this endangers us all. The long term implications, your current content creators will probably not be privy to and judging by their current behaviour, if they do see the downstream effects, they’ll likely shrug. Then the ultimate betrayal of journalism (and an antisemitic act), when a woke NYT journalist shares the private information of 600 Jewish creatives and academics, without their consent, with a subject the journalist was interviewing, the content landing almost immediately into the hands of people who are relentlessly attacking Jewish people. We keep waiting to see grown ups in the room. When that day comes I’ll come back here and alter my review.

Navigation on bottom a failure. It’s already so difficult to search for specific articles on the home page- you have to go to the For You section. The new navigation bar at the bottom is different to other apps and is not intuitive. In addition, you now need two hands to read- I used to be able to navigate w my thumbs - the awkward position means I need to use both hands. Not sure why the changed it- it’s not for the better.

A good newspaper. I’m in Australia and taking advantage of a cheap one year offer. A high standard of journalism which is so important nowadays. Facts are reported. Unfortunately more US centric than I expected. I would continue my subscription if the world news was more comprehensive.

Living in Australia, so far from my first home.... I read the NYT daily and feel connected to My City and to the USA. The Times’ reporting of world events keeps me informed. I appreciate how easy it is to share editorials and well-researched reports with friends and family around the globe. Many thanks! Grateful in Melbourne

Can searching and reading editorials be made easier?. Hi, I don't need to comment on the world class journalism or the excellent general layout of the app but can searching for and reading editorial articles be made easier in the app? The best solution would be to tag editorial articles in the opinion section. However, I don't mind searching for it using the editorial keyword in the search box, but if the results could at least be sorted based on the most recent articles first, that'll make the experience even better. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Repeated requests to update App.. Click on the request to update App and it takes you to the App page. Click on the App and it takes you to a request to update App. And backwards and forwards you go. I have been a subscriber for some years but this is tiresome and means I do not get to read the articles. So it’s gonna be goodbye NYT. Roger Collins, Perth, Western Australia.

Fair content - but no dark/night mode. Content of the NY Times is improving again as it fact checks the explosion of lies coming from the current administration and trying less to pretend there are two legitimate sides to stories when there is a side based in facts and a side based on ideology. As a practical matter, the app is well laid out but does lack a night mode which would be easier on the eyes for reading in the dark.

5 Stars Content - 3 Stars Long Term Price. As a casual overseas reader, I don’t mind paying $2/month, or $20pa. But I don’t agree with being automatically transferred to the rate more than ten times that amount. For an ongoing rate of $5/Mth, I would agree to limited access, just main stories & political news. For an ongoing rate of $0.25 for each story read, I would also agree. That’s either/or, not both the monthly charge & item read charge combined. I leave my thoughts with you to consider.

Awful subscription model. In order to cancel your subscription you have to call up and speak to multiple people telling you not to cancel. Especially awful for international customers who need to call up in the middle of the night. Was considering taking a break for a few months but now I will definitely never be resubscribing after having to jump through all these ridiculous hoops. Buyer beware.

The Current World. NYT keeps me up to date with US issues mainly politics. At the moment with the effect of the presidential election which could have wide ranging effects on the post election world this is vital. I do find Wirecutter reviews informative and a relief in the sense that they try to be objective in this commercialised world.

Love the NYT. Absolute love the NYT. It’s the fist thing I look at after I make my morning coffee! First I start my brain up with a game then to the min news! Also absolutely love the Cooking app. Just love it all!

Latest update not user friendly. I’ve been using the NYT app for more six years. Great investigative, well researched journalism presented in a format that’s easy to review. However, a recent update shifted the back icon to the bottom of the screen. All other apps position tgis function at the top of the screen so you intuitively look to the top of the screen once you’ve read an article only to discover there’s no back button. The new location at the bottom of the screen also requires awkward and frustrating hand contortions to reach it each time you want to return to the home screen. The result is the I surf less than I use to and more recently I’ve found myself abandoning the app quicker than normal if I’m in a browsing mood as other news apps are easier use. Please put the back button back where it belongs.

From an Australian who appreciates the NYT news and current affairs. Having returned back to live in Australia, we greatly appreciate and value the NYT . Reliable and timely news service coverage- diversity of views and world affairs . Appreciate the breadth of the coverage of current affairs of arts , food , health and opinion articles.

Ads, Ads and more Ads. Absolutely riddled with adverts, even for paying subscribers- probably at least one per scrolled screen. You’re better off adding a Safari homescreen shortcut and using an ad-blocker for a much more pleasant experience

Awkward functionality with new release. Love the Times, great writing, been using the app for more than 5 years now and it’s improved over the period. But the recent shifting of the back button to the bottom of the screen feels like a design flaw. Fingers live on the top of the hand, which makes pressing back a breeze when that functionality is at the top. Being at the bottom means an awkward hand contortion and I’m often peering to find the button. Making it user defined would be ideal.

Waking up in Australia. I have a morning ritual that I treasure which includes meditation, porridge, fruit & yoghurt and a hefty dose of The New York Times. I choose a variety of articles so as not to get bogged down in one particular area of obsessive interest. The writing is often beautiful, the perspectives vivid and the overall intelligence of a quality that provokes in the very best way. Very valuable to my sense of being a citizen of the world. Thank you!

Latest update killed commenting. ...and recommendations on article comments. I read the NYT on the iPad because, you know, that is where the app resides. In the recent past I could easily comment or recommend comments. Over the past week or so, I consistently see “unable... please try again later.” I mention it here in a review because nowhere in the app is it possible for a subscriber to end feedback or get help with an issue. Do better.

Some options about listening to podcasts in the App?. I’m a big fan of everything NYT but it would be great if there were some formatted method for listening to the amazing podcasts being produced by NYT.

Excellent and trustworthy. By far the best general newspaper around. Great for straight news and the opinion pieces are always worthwhile. I especially like the guest opinion pieces, which often offer more insight and diversity than the in house commentary. The health and wellness sections of the paper are fun and informative. I read the paper from Australia and my one criticism is that it’s coverage of Australia tends towards the left - which is ok if other views are also given space. This is different from the coverage of UK, Japan or Europe which is more balanced and mature. Overall the NYT is essential reading in a world where journalism and journalistic values are undervalued. I know many in the US will regard it as a “liberal” paper but from the perspective of the rest of the world it seems very much more middle ground. The app itself is ok. It would be better if like the Financial Times all articles were available on audio. With automated reading it should not be too difficult.

Too much video advertising distracts from articles. I have subscribed for a month and will not be renewing. Every article has a barrage of video advertising which only detracts from the reading experience. I have nothing against advertising and understand that newspapers need to make money but this is ridiculous. As a comparison I also subscribed to the Age newspaper and love it because it is an true digital newspaper whilst the NYT feels like a collection of articles smattered with video intrusions.

Bad navigation!. Hey NYT. While I love reading the NYT, your updated app has upset the navigation on the app. Particularly the ‘back’ button. With the ‘back’ now moved to the bottom, this is truly annoying! Physically, it is natural and easier to reach to the ‘back’ at the top. This is also consistent with overall iOS experience where most apps put ‘back’ on the top. You are simply now confusing and annoying my mind as I instinctively reach out to ‘back’ on top and then cannot find it there! How did you reach this decision to move this from top to bottom? Please put the ‘back’ back on top! PS: I saw there are quite a few other comments on this same issue. Seems I am not alone!

Update broke app for iPad Air2 users!?!?. I have been using NYT since 2017 until 4 May 2024 (last successfully used 3 May 2024). Today app required “update” but only update available requires iOS 16, which is not available for iPad Air2. The iOS for Air2 was updated in April 2024 to iOS 15.8.2. Please fix your app to provide functionality for Air2 users. NYT should not cause/engage in forced obsolescence. Not only is it wasteful & harmful to the environment to force disposal of working electronics, it assumes people have $$$$$$$ to replace working items. Please fix

Election news for Australians. This is the second election when I have subscribed to the NY Times. It gives such comprehensive information and analysis and I particularly like the minute by minute update of results on election day. A bargain too!

Can’t download app without paying for a second subscription. I subscribed to the NYT on their website, paid, and now I can’t download the app to access it and log in without Apple trying to charge me $21 to download & subscribe!! Just let me download the app for free and log in, and THEN ask about subscriptions! Such a terrible model and if I can’t access the times on my phone I’m not going to bother - unsubscribing asap.

Lacks Basic Features and Apple News Support. Amazing content let down by a poor user experience. Missing key features like dark mode support, search, most UI and content customisation, etc… This could be solved by allowing paying subscribers to access their NYT subscription through the native News app, which has significantly better features and design. NYT is the only subscription I have that intentionally doesn’t take part in the Apple News ecosystem.

It’s not the greatest news app, but I love it. The Guardian is probably the pick of the bunch with news apps. The NYT app is nothing fancy, has no real bells or whistles, I’ve always found their headline font kind off odd too... but I love the quality of writing and commentary, it is the NYT after all.

Unrivalled. Unrivalled bunch of apps & publications, from best gadget-shopping with the Wirecutters to “how-do-I-look, Wintour?” coverage of street fashion in the upcoming world fashion capital of Mongolia, and even - if that’s what you really expect from newspapers, some surprisingly acceptable investigation journalism. Just kidding! Even homeless & unemployed, I never gave up on supporting & reading voraciously, and every day for now 20 years, the best app from the best newspaper & brilliant clique of fact-checking troublemakers in the world. The source. Forever yours in truth-seeking, juju☡efrog

Love the NYT but not this App. I’ve been a subscriber for a couple of years now, and although I love the NYT, this app just isn’t up to scratch. This is surprising, considering how good the actual journalism is and that it’s probably the most well renowned newspaper in the world.. I really wish it was easier to navigate between articles, and not have to press the ‘<‘ button about 15 times every time I want to get back to the Home Page. I also think it should be easier to search by subtopic, and just generally look through the different sections. It almost seems like it’s a square space version of an app… with really basic navigation capabilities. I’m from Australia, so I’ve never actually read a hard copy paper from them, but I’m assuming there are regular sections/ features… it makes sense to me to have those headers laid out very clearly for people to navigate to. You should be able to search for key terms, major features, journalists and news topics. There should be a “front page” button on the page so you can go back to the home page after reading a piece. Also.. why are there two share buttons at the bottom right.. one looks like a present and the other a regular share icon. I feel like someone just threw this app together and haven’t bothered to improve it, it’s a shame because it doesn’t meet the standard of the paper.

Crikey! The worst unsubscribe steps ever. The unsubscribe function is very difficult to find and cannot be accessed through the app directly. My mother had the same bad experience and got super stressed and spent over an hour until she accidentally came across the unsubscribe button. It seems obvious that it’s set up in a way so that a certain percentage of customers will give up and end up paying an additional month or more of subscription. I have several other subscriptions with various vendors that are far, far easier to manage. This issue alone has made it very unlikely that my mother or I will subscribe again and I will discourage others to do so. Great news and interface but terrible subscription management. I cannot overstate that. You’ll lose many customers due to this. For the first time ever I am leaving a review regarding this. One final note. When I eventually got to the last unsubscribe step NYT offered me a whole year at $4 a month so I stay with them! I was like “NUP! I’m outta here”. Very poor business practice

The Times. Quality and well researched, but content is consistently similar. It would improve if there was more positive content.

Difficult to navigate between articles. The quality of the content is great. However as an app it doesn’t have the user’s experience as a priority. Older version of the NYT app allowed users to swipe from articles to article within a section. This function was taken away in an earlier update. Now one has to swipe back to the section homepage in order to select another article. The flipping back and forth is frustrating. Bring back the function to swipe between articles please.

Best news app on the App Store. The New York Times iPhone app has come a long way and I can now say confidently it is the best I have seen from any single publication on the App Store. By keeping up their exceptional journalistic standards (for the most part) and not creating false premises with click bait article headlines the times provide a tremendous source of knowledge to the public in a clear and concise manner. Their app’s audio features are also highly useful, their games very stimulating, and their download feature reliable. I only hope more journalistic institutions can follow the example they set in their coverage and their digital experience.

Frustrations and disappointments since the re-write. Review of Version 9.54 running on a 512Gb iPad Pro in landscape mode while offline. It is frustrating to use the NY Times app while offline. In the past, I was able to read most of the articles without an internet connection, but recently most articles require a “Live” connection and now show a blank page and an error when accessed. I would download the articles at work before leaving for home and read them on the train, which lacks WiFi. What is even more frustrating is that you cannot tell whether the article is available on the iPad until you tap on it. The new version has also broken other things. My larger-font settings are ignored in the main section so I have to wear my glasses to read the tiny font descriptions written in light grey, but the article body honours my font choice so I have to take my glasses off. Navigating the app is inconsistent; sometimes the arrow to go back is at the bottom of the page and sometimes it’s at the top. You can sometimes swipe to go back and other times, you can’t. In the past, I was able to sort the sections in the order I liked to read them, but now I can’t. When entering a section there is a “Something went wrong” error dialog. How is this message helpful to the reader? In landscape mode, the photos of the Most Popular section take up the entire screen; why? Unlike the paper version, where the length of an article is visible at a glance, it’s impossible to tell whether an article is a thousand words long or full spread, double-page feature. It’s a shame that such high quality journalism has to read via such a poorly designed app which is clearly a work in progress and has many shortcomings that need to be addressed before it rates more than one star.

Horrible redesign. I’d really like to hear how the UI team justifies some of their decisions.

Dark mode. Please implement dark mode

Awful user experience. Content is great but the app is unusable. Ads blare music constantly to the point you can’t get through an article. There’s no setting to mute the ads. Don’t know which focus group in hell thought this was a good idea. Expected better from the New York Times.

Please add a dark mode already. I’m seriously considering cancelling my sub because the bright white all over the app. It’s too difficult on the eyes for long articles.

Dark Mode?. When all apps are making this switch, I hope you are also working to add dark mode.

Does not work properly. Does not scroll properly (content not visible), slow to load, freezes.

Doesn’t work offline.. They removed the ability to auto download content for offline viewing. I spend a lot of time in planes and need to be able to read the paper offline and I’m not about to manually select each article ahead of time. Cancelling subscription till the app is usable again.

Almost unusable. Agree with other recent reviewers that app has become so glitchy and slow to load that it’s too frustrating use. Maybe it’s because of all the ads. I’m using an iPad 6th generation and iPad Pro 1st generation, which may not be the latest and greatest but they run all other apps just fine, including other digital newspapers. My internet and WiFi are fine, so that’s not the problem. Have been patiently waiting for this to be fixed because I assume the developers must be aware of it. But it’s just been getting worse over the past few months, to the point where I’m regretfully considering canceling my subscription. Gave it 2 stars because the design and user interface is pretty good, but that’s not much help when the performance makes it almost unusable.

Has become unusable. With average wifi speed and humble iPad, this app has become unusable. NYT needs to re-think page loading and ad bandwidth use. Would hate to cancel my subscription because of this barrier, but I’m close.

Great app - maybe a “dark” mode?. I read the NYT at all times of the day (and sometimes night). Great journalistic work. The only thing I miss is a “dark” mode which would make reading at night more enjoyable.

Be aware before you subscribe. This newspaper, which falsely promoted the existence of weapons of mass destruction and expert in playing drums of war, makes it virtually impossible to cancel online subscriptions. You might be billed without knowing. They email you to update your credit card or risk termination—exactly what I wanted—but they continue billing even with an expired card. Beware: once signed up, you may find it impossible to stop the subscription online. Shameful practice.

Latest makeover is painfully slow. Used to be a great app. That is, until they decided to revamp it a couple of weeks ago. Now it is painfully slow to load stories. Takes over a minute to draw the entire list of stories on iPhone 7 Plus and iPad Pro. Shame. You’ve killed the golden goose. No point in having a subscription once you destroy the user experience…

getting laggy. I have been a subscriber for about 4 years, running on an ipad Pro that is about the same age. As of about 3 months ago the app is getting very laggy and is..very..slow..to..load and arrange pictures and headlines. Usually I force-quit and relaunch it to get a faster load..ie once or twice a day. Could be another example of apps that ignore hardware that is not brand new. My ipad is not steam powered but this app no longer runs properly on it.

It’s a downgrade. Please stop tinkering with the app. I’ve been a paid subscriber for years and every version seems worse. By eliminating the swiping you make it very annoying to continuously read through the sections. For better ideas see WSJ... :-(

Crashes since last upgrade. Great news service but since the last upgrade days ago, the app doesn’t work on my iPhone anymore, hence the One Star review.

Stopped working on my iPhone. My mornings used to include the regular read of the NYT on my iPhone. Not any more. Now I must open my computer which is not as convenient - hence it’s not now a regular part of my morning routine. Please fix it ( the WP, Guardian and Globe and Mail work fine)

Good content. Just not the best app. Needs dark mode . It’s blindingly bright in dark rooms and uncomfortable to read. Would also be much better if you could adjust the font size without having to resort to changing the phone wide settings. Such a pain. The content is good though.

It’s 2022. Dark mode.. It’s time. Please. Dark mode.

Best news. Get dark mode.. Inexplicable why an app dark mode or system dark mode is not available.

Add dark mode. For the love of God! ADD SUPPORT FOR DARKMODE! this app is unusable after the sun goes down!

Ads, ads, ads. Too much ads for paid subscription.

Ads are still there. Apps works great but the ads are very intrusive even for paid users

Dark Mode?. Please let me know if I’m just unable to find it in settings for some reason. Or add it and I will change my review. Thanks!

Needs dark mode. App is good except there is no dark mode for reading at night. Please add dark mode.

Needs an option to configure navigation. I generally like the app, but I find a recent change awkward to use on my iPad. The back arrow for navigating to a previous screen used to be on the top of the screen, but it has been moved to the bottom. I don’t mind if some people want it there, but I find it awkward. I would love to see an option to place the back arrow at the top or bottom of the page, as best suits the individual user.

Slow & Cumbersome. I have a few news apps on my iPad Air and the NYT app is, by far, the slowest to load. It regularly freezes forcing me to restart the app. They need to rebuild the app from the ground up with a focus on speed. What should take only a few seconds can take minutes.

Ads? Still?. So I finally get a subscription and I’m still seeing ads? Are you kidding me?

NYT is a daily miracle...but. This app destroys the magic with intrusive ads and click bait that gives it the appearance of a UK tabloid. Please lose the ads - or run one pre-read. And tell Harry’s I have a beard ;)

Dark mode. Please make a dark mode. The white is way to bright.

Greedy Little Pigs. It’s quite simple. If I pay you, remove the ads. Oink oink.

Too slow and bloated. In recent times the app has become incredibly frustrating to use on my iPad and phone—takes literally minutes to load pages. For breaking news easier to look elsewhere.

No dark mode. I have dozens of reading apps, this is the only one that doesn’t have it.

Changes to the Sections Page wiped out all personalizations. This is an unwelcome change to the iPad app. The ability to sequence the Sections page according to my preferences is suddenly gone and the page is overwhelmed by the Most Popular entries at the top. Please reconsider this unfriendly restructuring.

Insulting. Showing ads *after* taking money from people is really low. If you insist on double dipping at least add a dark mode.

Getting worse. Progressively over the last year this app has become slower and slower. With the latest update, only half the news stories appear. Sometimes exiting the program and restarting it works. Othertimes not. None of my other apps have this problem, so I suspect it is the app, not my ipad. Update. Still very buggy. Also, I really hate it when I am reading an article and suddenly the whole page shifts and advertising is shoved in front of me. As much as I love the NYT, this app really needs improving.

Remove ads sound for paid user. App is great. Content is great. In fact I’m a paid user HOWEVER I’m really bothered by the ads sounds playing without the option to turn the sounds off.... dispointing

Not user friendly. Terrible user design. Asked me for my interests but then does not organize “For You” by those interests. Why ask if you’re doing to make it so difficult for me to read the articles I want?

We get it already. Please stop spamming my notifications with how Biden is an old man. I know. And deliberately misconstruing statements from democrats to make for a more interesting headline is bad journalism.

New app is seriously BAD, no real newspaper experience. A subscriber of electronic paper since 2010, we went through several app-updates. The most recent one is the worst. What makes it real bad: I cannot swipe from one article to the next as I prefer to to go through the a whole section in that day’s newspaper edition. I’m forced to go back to the section’s main page. Also, the app is compartmentalised in ways that will always update to the most recent edition. I activated the ‘don’t update function’ and yet it updates. The tech department is really lagging behind in quality to the excellent journalism delivered.

No dark mode really?. Long time subscriber. Please bring us dark mode!

Among the best!. I really enjoy the NY Times for the in-depth articles and analyses. Great app as well - smooth and easy to use. Keep up the great work!

Doesn’t load. I’ve re installed the app a few times hoping itll fix whatever needs fixing. I have to keep setting up the app every time I close it. there isn’t an option to skip step 4, which asks you to save articles others have saved (literally couldn’t care less about this). It just infinitely loads on this page. I’ve been paying for NYT for more than 2 months and haven’t read any of the articles through the app because of this one page. Pls fix, thank you.

I don’t get it. Not sure I understand why they changed the layout. I can still get top headlines. However, I have to tap on Sections button at bottom if I want to open any other section like Most Popular, Business or Tech. If I want to then go to another section, I have to repeat the whole process again. Very frustrating. On my iPad, when you press the Sections button, you also get a blank screen. To have it list the sections, you have to press Top Stories button then the Sections button again. The iPhone version does not have this issue. There is also no option to reorder the sections the way you want it. I think NYT should fire whoever IT company they hired.

Clickbait and ads. Some of the headlines are becoming click bait and if I’m paying a lot for this I don’t know why there are ads...

Give us night mode. Every day there is no dark mode you cause climate change. Please stop eating my battery and burning my eyes.

Update March 2021. Not sure what happened with this update. I am no longer able to organize my sections in order of preference. I do not want to see “Most Popular” etc first. Please fix!

Your President???. Throughout history, the “Newspaper” has played a major role in the future of the country it serves. What happened to the “New York Times”? You have a problem President who has managed to do what the British, Japanese and the Germans couldn’t do in 3 theatres of war. He’s responsible for thousands of Americans dying because of his inept leadership and nobody seems concerned. “Wake Up America”!!!

Lousy since updates. App most of time just no longer works! It freezes. It spins that it’s downloading a story I’ve clicked on but never actually downloads. Since the many recent updates this app doesn’t work. I’ll have to cancel my subscription because I’m not able to read the news stories!

Saved for later. Please attend to the saved for later feature. Selected articles no longer save for later. It had been one of my favourite features. All my saved articles are gone.

Room for Improvement. Sadly, I’ve dropped my rating by one more star because of the continuing challenges with this app. I can no longer leave a comment on an article, or tap to “Recommend” a comment. There is a technical problem that needs to be resolved. While I value and enjoy the important work of the NYT reporters and editors, I am becoming increasingly frustrated with a few items: 1) the growing prominence of repetitive ads that are often not relevant to my demographic; 2) that fact that I am seeing any ads at all within a service I am paying for; and 3) the limited nature of the comments attached to any given article or editorial—I would like to see every piece offer an opportunity for comment for a longer period of time, as it is an incredibly valuable public forum. Thank you for your time.

Bug preventing me from using my subscription. I generally like the NYT app and use it to read my news daily, but I got a new phone and now can’t restore my subscription. Every time I try the app crashes. I have deleted and reinstalled the app. I have updated my iOS. I have shut down and restarted my phone. Nothing works, and I can’t read the articles I have paid to be able to read. I have reached out to the developer through email and through the “report a bug” feature in the app and gotten absolutely no response. Very frustrating, and I’m about to discontinue my subscription if they don’t get it fixed. [Finally got a response. Apparently my new phone was trying to log me in under a different email address than the one I had subscribed under. Still doesn’t explain why the app crashed every time instead of telling me there was no subscription associated with that email address.]

Mediocre app, worse than website. This app is quite annoying to use in real life. It freezes for seconds when opening a new article on older phones and it frequently forgets which article it was on if you switched to another app. A way I use this app is I see a NYT app notification of an interesting story (which is a good feature) and then it opens the news article. I then just used another app for a second and came back and the NYT app reloads and forgot which article I was on. There is a “Recently Viewed” section which at least makes this app usable. Also, why are there ads when I’m a subscriber? I would just rather open the link in mobile Safari instead as it would remember my tabs and I can open multiple news articles at once (in multiple apps). Safari also lets me search the article and blocks ads (I’m a subscriber already).

The content is king; the app could use some work. The five stars are for the New York Times content. Here, however, is how bad the app experience is - I checked, and I’ve been holding off on updating for six months. I scan recent reviews to see if people say the intrusiveness of the ads has been toned down any. Nope. Apparently the latest innovation is full screen video ads. I don’t get those, thankfully, so I’ll just stay where I am. I have an iPhone X, which is plenty fast still for everything else I do, but I also get the ads that make the page jump up and down and you lose your reading spot. Not a great experience. I will say however that MAYBE it has gotten better very recently. I checked a couple articles just now and there were only two ads. When I’m accustomed to seeing so many ads that it’s nearly impossible to position your scroll without at least one ad onscreen at all times. So, I’m hopeful the NYTimes has heeded feedback. Two ads is entirely reasonable, and something I would readily accept. Fingers crossed. (I’ll even take more than two! Just give me some breathing room where I can read a scroll’s worth or two without interruption.)

Greatest newspaper of all-time (GOAT). I’ve been reading the NYT since high school over 46 years ago. We are fortunate they’ve published their past headlines, newspapers & some of their past wrongs, racist, sexist & vile (dis)information. They usually didn’t aggressively advocate for doing the right things. They usually stayed with the majority’s opinion even though people were suffering, dying & being persecuted. I learned a lot about the hypocrisy regarding ‘White’ America, Religion, Hollywierd, international crimes, etc… This enabled me to ignore Politicians, policies/laws to divide & conquer Americans. I understood the pros/cons of capitalism, economics & how all countries have their thumb on the scale choosing winners & losers. I’m still navigating my life, career & finances based off the best combination of writers ever!

Slow, buggy, and battery intensive. This app, for about the last two years, has been nothing but frustrating for me. Despite having good internet speeds, it consistently has very long load times (multiple seconds), fails to load the entire page, and lags when using interactive media. Ads pop up (finish loading) as you are reading the article, making you lose your place. The mobile website works much better, but isn’t one easy click. When I check at the end of the day, it has used a lot of battery in the background, more than other news apps, and yet it is never refreshed when I open it, making me wait to see the headlines. And despite the fact you can’t download articles to read later (very annoying on a flight or rural road trip), it’s always taking up a ton of storage!

So disappointed. I love the reporting and other content in the NYT and finally got an all access subscription. While they’ve done a pretty good job on the related apps (like cooking), the NYT iPad app is just awful. The worst part is the navigation. Couldn’t be less intuitive. No navigation bar on every page? Really? No way to get back to the home page or get to a section without hitting the back arrow (which is in different places on different pages)? Come on. Designers need to take a look at the Apple news app or any of the many other well-designed news apps out there. My iPad is how I consume my news every day, and as much as I would love the source to be the New York Times, this app just may push me away from the subscription. I’m sorry that that’s the case.

Excellent content, formatting issues. I really enjoy the array of topics that the Times covers, especially beyond the usual news and politics that other publications focus on to the detriment of all else. Dark mode is also a welcome addition to the app’s presentation. There is one issue that I find unacceptable however and lost it a star. It has to do with the app’s presentation of the live feed that focuses on the most urgent news of the day. It slides around from left to right while scrolling up or down to view each post. In contrast, the Guardian’s formatting of its live feeds works perfectly. It goes straight up and down and I don’t have to deal with the jarring experience of it sliding around while reading. I pay $13 for the Guardian and $17 for the Times and obviously expect better from the latter. If the Times devs are reading this review, then please take the time to look into this, because it mars what otherwise detracts from what should be a flawless experience. The issue happens regardless of what model iPhone that is in use. It happened on a XR that I used for 4 years and now appears on my current model, the iPhone 14 Pro.

Still No Dark Mode. Love the app and I’ve been a subscriber for years, but I can’t fathom why there is STILL no dark mode on this app. I find myself using the Washington Post app more because I can read at night without disturbing anyone with a blinding glare of white light. I’m surely not the only person who desires a dark mode on one of the premier news apps available. It’s a strange omission that seems relatively easy to fix, and it’s one that is likely driving readers like me to other news apps. Please include a dark mode - it’s a turn-off for customers to be told to fiddle with Night Shift instead, and the results aren’t great. If the Washington Post has been able to provide a dark mode for several years, I have no clue why it’s still an issue for the NYT.

Better in browser, actually. I read the Times every day, but I refuse to use the app (and others must feel the same way, because the banners trying to redirect you have gotten out of control). The app doesn’t really offer many features that the browser version lacks aside from dark mode and an easy way to access games. In return, it eats up my battery far faster than the browser version does, and my phone actually grows warm while using the app. The layout, fonts, and design are practically identical. The browser appears to be more stable as well - loading stories in the app sometimes kicks me back to the front page for no apparent reason, and pages load more slowly almost always. I just can’t see any compelling reason to use the app, unless you really want to help the NYT by exposing your phone to its trackers and telemetry (presumably the cause of all that battery drain).

Great Source But Advertising is Pervasive. Update: I reinstalled app and it is much improved. Much more responsive than before. Advertising is too pervasive still especially when you see two videos playing in one article and you are trying to read. NYTimes has some of the best journalism you can find. Articles are well written and very thorough. You will not find clickbait or some headline that is catchy just to get you to click on it. Also, I do enjoy the “for you” section, it is a nice touch. However, as a subscriber, the one thing that is annoying about the app is how pervasive the advertising is. One or two ads per article seems reasonable, but when they are littered throughout an article and they cause the text to jump as you read, it becomes difficult to read.

Emotion and pandering vs. thoughtful aalysis. I have been deeply disappointed by the New York Times over the past year. The paper has repeatedly taken the easy route of showing what is easy to obtain and avoiding the hard truths beneath appearances and popular opinions. Treating Hamas and the Israeli government with “according to”, as if there is a parallel level of freedom and accountability is naive at best. Publishing traffic patterns in the West Bank as if one were driving to Canada and security isn’t an issue is even more naive — try driving from Central America to the US without a US passport. Lack of holding Sinwar accountable for a war he started and his plans to maximize civilian casualties is a dereliction of responsibility. The New Yorker story about Sinwar was far more insightful and informative. The New York Times seems to get the footage that is easy to get which reinforces its opinions and presents it beautifully. We live in complex times which deserve thoughtful analysis and a defense of freedom.

Font size problem …. SOLVED. Update: I revised my review from 1 star back to 5 stars. The latest app version no longer has an option to change the font size (iOS version) from within the app. But after contacting the NYTimes, I now understand they they have a good reason for this. As of iOS 15 the font size can be changed for any app individually through iOSs’ accessibility features. NYTimes tech support walked me through this process and I am now back to “normal” with a NYTimes-specific font size. Thank you. —— Old review: The app no longer has an option to change the font size in settings. Instead, there is a text now that say to adjust the size in the iPhone operating system. If one increases the font size there the Nytimes app displays fonts barely larger. But in all other apps the font size is now huge, making some of those essentially unusable. (For example, my Tesla app.) Font size adjustment is an essential feature and should not be dropped from one update to the next. I will also call the New York Times, as they may not even be aware of what mayhem the software developers have imposed on many of their subscribers.

Cloud strike. With every iteration of the Times electronic platform, less and less content is synchronized automatically. Virtually anything one wants to read has to be downloaded as an individual document be an individual reader. In addition to tethering readers to an active (and if they intend to do anything else all day - high speed) internet connection to read anything beyond story headlines, it wastes an immense amount of time for its readers. By leaving virtually the entire paper in the cloud, the Times is now less an electronic platform than a poorly functioning web site. The next step will likely be that readers will be forced to interact with an electronic phone tree that will send requested articles by fax. Strong work on the part of the Times IT Department!

Missing Logical Enhancement. Review Update (Sept 2022): THANK YOU FOR ADDING DARK MODE SUPPORT!! As many other reviewers mention, great content. Unlike others, I don’t have an issue with where the back arrow is. However, it’s now 2022 and there’s still no support for dark mode! Why?! Do you feel that these blindingly white pages are just part of your look? For a traditional hold-it-in-your-hand newspaper, yes, but on an electronic device, no. It’s not a good look, it doesn’t make reading comfortable. There are plenty of reviews here that mention the lack of dark mode support and the desire for it to be added. More and more apps are adding support for dark mode, a logical, let’s make our app a bit more user friendly on the eyes, enhancement. It’s time for The NY Times to do the same.

Clunky and bloated. I have been reading the New York Times since Junior High, I would pick it up at a newsstand on the way to school. I have been a digital only subscriber for the past several years. I really dislike the app, for its purpose, to read the news, it is too bloated and unresponsive. Nearly 770mb to just read the news? It freezes when trying to load ads; which brings up the issue of ads, how did we get to the point of accepting these types of ads on top of a subscription. I rather have the option of having a text only app which is lightweight and unhindered by their ad strategy. Finally, it does seem that they are behind the curve, they seem a bit stuck in the neoliberal world of the 90s. And don’t do nearly enough to to address the real root causes of certain specific issues. However judging from the comment sections of many articles, perhaps that is to be expected. A lot of talk, but few willing to walk the walk.

App works poorly on subway or whenever internet connection is lacking. I love The NY Times, and I want to love this app, but I’ve noticed that whenever I’m on the subway, the app frequently hangs and freezes while I’m scrolling through an article. This bug has been going on for a long time, and seems to be related to the need to load images or adds while scrolling down. It seems to freeze or hang while it attempts to download the ad or image, which—when you’re on a subway with an unstable internet connection—means frequently the app appears to freeze for several seconds. There has to be a better way for developers to architect how the app is designed. I know I can’t be the only New Yorker suffering from this frustrating problem. The app didn’t used to do this, and other news apps don’t seem to have this problem. But for the past year or so, it really has impacted my ability to read The NY Times during my commute. Help!!!!

What happened to unbiased reporting?. I don’t live in NY but have always read the NYT as one of my sources of daily news. I had, for many years, been impressed by the quality and depth of reporting by it’s many journalists. Unfortunately, the once great newspaper has become a victim of the need to stop reporting for reporting sake and become a source of revenue that panders to the readers by giving them stories they will agree with rather than challenge them with facts. In the paper’s defense, this is not unilateral, for it seems nearly every outlet now does the same. That’s why I have turned to more unbiased sources like Tangle, 1440, Semaphore and the like to get the full stories on pertinent events. Oh, how I wish we could get the old NYT back. I know this will probably mean nothing to those in charge for I may appear to be one yelling in the wilderness, but I can’t help believe there are many more like me who thirst for real unbiased reporting of important events.

Made the mistake of downloading this version. Confusing display, over-reliance on photos, bad type size ratio between articles and comments, crashes. I'll try to retrieve the old version stored on my PC. NYTimes, the developers are not moving in a good direction. Update September 10: I was able to obtain the earlier iPad version via the restore function on iTunes. What a relief to again see the paper displayed for grownups! But I despair thinking that the Times will at some point discontinue the legacy version. Please, Times staff, if you read these things, *seriously* examine the awful reviews your universal app is getting and admit you made an error. Your loyal readers will respect you the more for it. Update November 9, 2018: The earlier iPad version no longer functions. I’m stuck with this version. Even more than the bad layout, I hate the sprinkling of multiple ads every few paragraphs. It shows contempt for the reader. I would never buy anything shoved at me this way. I don’t know why advertisers in the “paper of record” haven’t figured this out. Update February 18, 2019: I’ve had it with this app. The designer of this app is to design what Trump is democracy. The bedazzled ads every few paragraphs and awful layout offend me. I’ll go back to the non-supported app version. If/when that stops functioning altogether I’ll either read the web version or give up and subscribe to The Washington Post.

Superb writers, but highly questionable reporting. I’m originally from New York City, and The Times has been my go-to source of journalism most of my life. This was true until, in the last few years, I realized the so-called evenhandedness of the paper’s political coverage had become untrustworthy. I’m ashamed of The Times recent history of presenting extremist politicians and their positions as though they had legitimacy. What happened to the paper’s commitment to leading with critical fact-checking? How can conspiracy theories and denial of scientific facts be “news” or “platforms” or “views” unless they are reported as what they are: distortions and downright lies? When did it become ok to disguise emphatic scientific consensus as “opinion”? Some Times journalists are doing their best to hang on to their integrity, and I keep reading their reports and columns. But the editorial leadership has apparently endorsed the practice of offering distorted coverage while labeling it “fair.” What a rotten loss.

Good luck if you have billing issues. I had a subscription for over two years. Subscribed thru Apple and paid via Paypal as I have with lots of other apps. Their app updated and it logged me out then gave me an “unknown error” when I tried to restore the subscription. Thus began the customer service nightmare. The chat is useless. The customer service people will mark you resolved and basically “hang up” on you. I escalated to email and I emailed them screenshots showing the account, error, my Paypal account, apple ID, etc. they could not glean the necessary info to fix my account from any of it. Latest person told me she could not resolve the issue via email and sent me back to the chat who said I have an empty account with no subscription. I went to Paypal and cancelled the monthly draft there and reported it as fraud to my bank. Worst customer service I have experienced online in a long time. A shame, because I enjoyed the journalism but the customer service experience was completely and utterly useless.

NYTimes lost its objectivity in the Presidential election. The NYTimes has lost its objectivity in the Presidential election. Quality professional journalism must remain unbiased and present to its customers and patrons all the pros and cons of important issues in presenting the news (news, not editorials). Unfortunately the staff and management of this newspaper wants so profoundly that Harris should win, and Trump loose, that they have lost their objectivity. The say nothing good about Trump and his ideas and proposals and nothing bad about Harris and her ideas and proposals. But this is easily seen to be absurdly incorrect because almost exactly half of our nation is for Trump and against Harris: Therefore, there must be some ideas and proposals of Trump which are good; the same can be said for Harris. And vice versa for bad ideas from each. The NYTimes was a great newspaper, but no longer, for it has lost its objectivity, engages in social engineering, and has forsaken the principles of professional journalism.

No user customization of mainpage + Cancelling a subscription is a nightmare. Please let us customize the categories show. On the main page. Recently, a large section for sports was added. I don’t care for sports and would prefer not to have it in the main page of the app. Would be great to do the same for the op ed section, the quality of which has evaporated in recent years. Paying subscribers get an ad every half page while reading articles. The ads are highly repetitive and obtrusive. Please offer a “do not show this add again button.” NY Times make you call their customer support centre to cancel a subscription. It's only open during limited hours. When you call to cancel they will incessantly try and convince you not to cancel. For a news organization that prides themselves on high standards, this is the bottom of the barrel for customer service.

Hate the redesign. Update: Font size has changed with recent updates. I prefer the smallest setting, but the font remains large within articles. Also wish there was dark mode and that they would move back button to top left. This app just keeps getting worse. I’ve been a subscriber for years and really love the content. But with this last update, I’m considering canceling. To chime in with others, the app has always had loading issues. I hate how ads load and will force scrolling. I constantly lose my place. Sometimes the app automatically closes. But the moving of the back arrow to the bottom, honestly, makes this app unusable to me. I mostly read on my iPad and the location is hard to reach/find. I will often stop reading through the app and switch to another news source. You wouldn’t think a small change would make a difference but it really makes me abhor this app. Not sure why they changed it.

Complexity for complexities sake. I am amused to see that so many reviews focus on the quality of journalism of the New York Times, and not how the quality of the app does that journalism a disservice. How the NY Times continues to “evolve” their online presence to make it almost impossible to read through an article, or series of articles without making you play a game of “find the next link to the story on the website” is more frustrating than having to thumb through an actual newspaper to find the continuation of a printed article. The failure of all photos to download even when you select that option, so reading an article offline is a checkerboard of text and blank white spaces, the slowness with which articles load, and the confusion of having the text and background scroll at different speeds all devalue the great journalism Give these great journalists, and the important stories you publish the respect of an app that complements, not detracts from the journalism. PLEASE.

The ads aren't so bad, but the..... I've been a NYT subscriber for over 20 years and I love it! It always made my day seeing the NYT in my driveway, especially on Sunday. After moving to the country I had to start using the digital edition and it's really, really great. This last update and new app could use a few tweaks. I do enjoy the layout and it's esthetically very enjoyable. And the ads, no big deal! You have ads in all print newspapers and magazines that you pay for, so what's the issue? They're not interfering with the stories so I'm fine with it. What I do not like is the fact you can't add or move more of your favorite sections to the top column like before. You can only move like 5 or 6 now. Really wish you'd correct that please. But other than that I still really enjoy it and will continue to subscribe. Thank you!

NYT: Don’t shortchange your suscribers. This from an unconditional devotee. Your latest app for iPad is a disaster. The previous version allowed you to go back to previous issues and this one doesn’t. That feature is essential for those like me who want to read all the issues but frequently fall behind. Furthermore the previous organization of material allowed the reader to go from section to section easily guaranteeing that we would easily read the whole edition. I find the current organization unnecessarily convoluted. What on earth was wrong with your previous app? I have gone back to reading on my old Kindle without the benefit of large color photos etc. Not as much fun.

Great app ruined by too many inline ads. I use this app every day, have been a longtime print and online reader, and find the app experience continuously degraded by ads. It usually fetches content quickly (on a good connection) though loading the app can be slow (scrolling is blocked, likely waiting on ad networks). Offline reading of designated sections is great. Any time the phone is negotiating a weak signal (eg when connectivity goes in and out on the subway), things freeze up. Most important and the reason for my low rating is that there’s an ad every few paragraphs! It makes for a terrible reading experience. Hopefully they’ll take the cue of other news orgs and offer an ad-free subscription for a higher price, I’d happily pay up. Also, full screen ads that unexpectedly take over while you’re reading are beyond obnoxious. News orgs are in a tough spot these days, but to the NYT - please don’t alienate subscribers with an ads-first mobile UX.

Impressive content, but could cross more Ts. I read the NY Times daily for its in-depth coverage of national/intl affairs, science, arts, health, etc. Would like to see more on: — How/why consumer prices are often kept low by extremely low wages and poor living conditions among production communities; — Why so many people believe Trump’s lies about the 2020 election and disregard the bipartisan courts and legislatures that rejected those lies under the same checks and balances the U.S was founded on; —What people throughout the world think about things like ongoing regional wars and conflicts, climate change, gun control in the US vs other countries, and what they think can and should be done about them. —One nitpick: I often see typos that stick out in online Times stories. Why doesn’t someone just log on and fix them?

Naive/unproductive UX design decisions. The recent update took away the shortcut buttons at the top of the Today page. What replaced the shortcut buttons? Hundreds of empty useless white pixels of course! For me these were the most used features of the app as they took me directly to the columns I read every morning. Now I have to either do a full search (results not great) or pan/scroll all around the For You or Sections tabs to find these items amidst the sea of everything else, two things that used to be a touch away every morning. I would have expected the shortcuts feature to be expanded since its great, the decision to remove it (confirmed in a chat with NYTimes support) is astonishing. BTW the app has always had lots of loading issues, frequently starts jittering content wildly on the screen as I scroll (sometimes keeps jittering after scrolling requiring a kill/restart), paints the iPad screen as if it’s a small iPhone sometimes then fixes itself if I rotate to Portrait mode and back, these glitches are a nuisance prompting me to always kill/restart before reading the morning news, not the end of the world but a bad look, and definitely no better in the most recent version. I’ve generally overlooked the rabid glitchiness of the app because it had been great generally for reading news.. not so much anymore and heading in the wrong direction. I have an almost new iPad running iOS 14.4.

Difficult for vision impaired. I’ve had the New York Times app for years. I enjoyed it very much. However I am vision impaired. Over the years in order to make the app work more attractive they have also made it more difficult to read. The use of clever fonts, the use a gray scale and the size of the text all over the years have worked against vision impaired. If there’s anyway you could make a black-and-white version it would help. Are used to download the iPhone app on my iPad. Then I could double the size and read it with no problem. Now of course you can’t download the iPhone app to your iPad. Anything that could be done to improve this app for vision impaired would be greatly appreciated.

The iPhone version is maddening. As one scrolls down through the list of articles, huge, repetitive ads that often dwarf the times article content locks annoyingly appear. Click on an article, and when you return to the list you are in a completely different place as the banal ads have refreshed and are of different dimensions. You then need to re-scroll through the list of articles and ads to find where you left off. Maddening. The iPad app is not as afflicted as it resembles the physical newspaper front page and returns to it after you’ve read an article. It’s the iPhone version that is almost unusable. Find a way to return to exactly the spot you departed from when reading an article. This should be app development 101. And for heavens sake, if you insist upon littering my expensive paid subscription with silly ad content, make them less obtrusive. There is no way I’m going to click on any of them anyway.

Latest Update Ruined App. They have huge ads that fill the entire screen. It’s annoying to see over and over again an ad for someone called Ezra Klein and his podcast. I liked the previous version and used it a lot. Most previous updates were minor improvements. The latest update though completely redesigned the interface. It is an absolute mess. Looks like something designed for the attention span of a 2 year old. Looks like streaming conscious to me. I actually stopped using it and have gone to the Washington Post instead. If they do not fix this, they will see a decline in subscriptions. The Post solved this problem by having a “classic” version of the app that looks just like a print newspaper, in addition to an app specifically designed for the iPad. They need to either fix this or come up with a version that has the look and feel of a actual newspaper.

Lousy — just use the browser version. They keep redesigning this app and every time it gets worse. It completely disregards my preferences in the “For You” section, giving me articles from sections I have zero interest in, and never posting articles from the few ones I specifically check. The “Manage Your Interest” section throws back errors when you try to change them. There is no section exclusively for visual art & design like on the browser version; the app’s Art & Design category is larded with articles on TV, books, movies etc — topics that already have their own exclusive sections. Numerous little frustrations in the navigation like that have driven me to finally delete the app and just use a browser. On the plus side the app works smoothly and the interactive features aren’t buggy. I haven’t noticed a huge problem with the ads like others here are complaining about. No problems with the functionality — my problem is simply getting to the content I want.

Good journalism with less-good app. UPDATE: I am a bit intrigued to find my review from I-don’t-know-how-long-ago. NOTHING has changed. What is the point of the reviews if the developers don’t/can’t/won’t make some positive changes? C’mon, NYT. You can do better than this. Content brings this up from one star. I write (mostly) about using the app on my iPad though some is applicable to use on an iPhone, too. Don’t care about the back button being on the bottom (I’m adaptable) but the jumpiness when a new ad is added in highly annoying. Worse is the return to the top when I finish reading an article rather than back to where I was when I selected the article to read. WORST of all are the long stretches of blank (except, go figure, for ads) as if some content simply refuses to load. Keep scrolling through blank and eventually I’ll find an article. May follow others and just use the browser. And, yes, I have rebooted my iPad. Makes no difference.

App stopped updating 6:30am Dec 2nd. Ugh. While the old app's presentation and offline usability were much better than this new app's, this app has failed to update since Dec 2nd for no apparent reason (there was no recent update; same iOS version; same iPad; etc.). Ugh! Also, app has offline usability issues - only 10 sections are downloaded for offline reading and even then, some articles still require an internet connection (I understand the photos & interactive articles not being available, but the text should be available). Basically, I can no longer depend on this app for air travel which is when I would catch up on more obscure sections. (Note: while the old app didn't have this issue, once the new app was released, the old app's articles became 95% online only over the course of six months -- yes 19 of the first 20 articles required a connection!) For me, the point of the app is offline use. If I wanted online access to NYT, I would just use my browser.

A Huge Step Backwards No longer. It took the Times a while to fix all the problems with the new app, but now it is excellent. They have remedied all the issues I identified in my initial review. Thanks for listening. The app now mirrors the excellent layout used in the web page version. —- The Times thinks this is an improvement? They would be sadly mistaken. I subscribe to the Times to read journalism. The new app blows up photos so that less content appears on the main page. On the old app, I can scroll through the entire paper and pick out the most interesting articles by section, just as if I were reading the physical paper. Now just a fraction are on the main page and they are completely disorganized. Please don't phase out the old app. The new one reminds me of New Coke.

Benefits and limitations of reading the New York Times. New York Times news coverage is wonderful, but with effort I could find much of it elsewhere. In contrast, the opinion pieces are irreplaceable. Whether it is David Brooks on politics or Nicholas Kristof on Palestine, among many others, their insights are very helpful in making sense of the world. I find particularly valuable the columns in which the views of a variety of researchers on a particular topic are collected. My principal reservation about the Times today is that it does not provide sufficient historical or ideological breadth in viewing events on the world stage. The result is that one has to go elsewhere to learn about the precedents for, and causation of, current events and to learn about possible alternatives to American foreign policies.

Love NYT, just not the app. For the record, I love the New York Times, and think they do excellent work. This review is not a reflection of that. However, the app drives me bananas. Unless you’re trying to read stories that play into the algorithm of what you’ve read in the recent past, this app will not give you what you need. I read the New York Times to expand my mind, not to read the exact same things I’ve always read. Also, if you click on a notification it will not take you to the story about which the notification has been written—it just takes you to your algorithmic feed, where are you are literally fed more of what you’ve read in the past. This makes it impossible to change the algorithm so that it expands what you are able to see. Even the other sections are difficult to navigate. I just want to read all the NYT has to offer, why do they have to make it so difficult?

For You is not for me. I’m not seeing how the latest update is an improvement. The For You section has a list of articles that are absolutely the antithesis of what I would read first, and I don’t see a way to give feedback to the algorithm or to add items I really do want there. (I changed my settings, but that’s not addressing the problem.) And maybe it’s petty, but I loved being able to jump to Spelling Bee right away - I intentionally do that puzzle *before* I depress myself with the day’s news and now I have to scroll through the full news feed to get there, and the feed keeps loading and loading, so just when I think I’m at the bottom and I click on the Bee, more stories have loaded and I find myself accidentally clicking on a random story. I’m a loyal subscriber and will stick around, but would appreciate some additional fixes.

Fixing what was never broken. As a relatively recent subscriber, I grew to cherish the NYT not just for current events, but their environmental reporting, thoughtful pieces on modern life, and digital accessibility to anyone with a screen and a few dollars per week. The app was pleasant to browse and read, retained one’s login, and was not overrun with annoying features. The recent app update shuts out many subscribers with perfectly functional screens, victims of planned obsolescence. The environmental and human tolls of “disposable” smart devices have been reported on extensively and ironically by the NYT. The decision to leave behind a swath of dedicated users (including many former subscribers to the actual paper) who can’t afford >$500 for a new iThing is curious in the contemporary news landscape. Why should reading mostly plain-text articles necessitate complex software? The NYT app has revealed some organizational hypocrisy with regard to its own environmental reporting, and it will carry on as a news outlet for the tech-elite…

App is fine. Times is not.. The app is fine. The news outlet has lost its mind. Subscribed for decades, read it for longer, and what the paper has done to normalize and support Trump is unfathomable to this media professional — and downright sick. You can compare one candidate’s coverage to the other, side by side, on how the Times reports on the same issues in this most important election. On one thing after another — age, mental condition, policy statements, interaction with media outlets — and it’s startlingly uneven in favor of a fascist candidate who has repeatedly threatened everyone including the media. Makes you wonder why, but it doesn’t really matter. (Is the Times that afraid? Does the Times think they can ever pacify someone like that?) Bottom line: The Times has lost its hard-earned credibility. They’ve lost trust. Cannot cancel at this moment because of my work. But the moment I can, I shall.

I feel like you’re taunting us now. Today I woke to another bad design decision — moving the article “back” arrow (and comments button) to the bottom of articles. But the SECTION back arrow is still at the top of the page. So not only is my muscle memory obsolete, I’ll have to learn which is which every time. Fun! Also, the performance is getting worse again. I had an older iPad on which your app loaded especially slowly — one of the reasons I got a new one. That was OK for a bit. Now with the very latest iPad available, the app is starting to load slowly, or fail to load. EVERY OTHER APP on my iPad loads fine. So I guess it’s not the hardware — maybe it’s the ads? Even the old physical paper didn’t have the same ad 5 times on the same page, after every paragraph. And let’s not forget about the ability to choose & order sections, and to swipe to go the next article — things readers have been able to do with the physical paper since the 1800’s. Incredibly, your apps used to allow this and YOU REMOVED THE FEATURES. Why??? The other thing I can’t understand: your iPhone app runs perfectly all the time. I really feel like you hired Steve’s nephew to run the iPad app, and he just cannot be fired. Meanwhile, the Post and WSJ apps run very well on my iPad. Starting to think seriously that they would make a fine substitute for the Times.

Where does the morning briefing go after I close the app?. The app makes it very difficult to find the things I’m looking for. Specifically, if I was reading through the morning briefing and then close out of the app to return to it later, I can no longer find the briefing. It used to appear at the top of the “For You” section, but that is not the case anymore. At least, it does not appear there after I’ve already opened it. The constantly changing interface of the app makes it confusing, and I wish there was some sort of tutorial released with new versions to show you where things have been moved to. Also, the “Saved for Later” and “Recently Viewed” sections do not show up in an intuitive spot — I would expect them to be under “For You,” not “Sections.” After the latest update, I had the hardest time finding these things. Please make the app more intuitive or just stop changing things around so we can at least keep track of where everything is.

Offline Viewing Problems. I used to love this app because it enabled you to save the “paper” for offline viewing automatically. Now the only way to save articles for offline viewing is selecting them one at a time, a cumbersome process. Worse now, the majority of articles are being curated under the banners of “Daily Briefing”, “Live Update”, or one article will lead to a string of articles under the same topic all of which do not preset the option to be saved for later; or if they do it is a 50/50 chance of whether it works because it will look for an internet connection prior to opening the article. This app has become very frustrating for me as a travel a lot on airplanes and and ever increasing number of daily articles are unavailable to me in an offline viewing mode. If this problem gets fixed then immediately back to 5 stars.

Dark Mode?!. I love the New York Times. I think they do a fine job getting the story both quickly and accurately. Fabulous reporting, I love the look and feel of the app. My one complaint is that there is no dark mode. It continues to bewilder me that there is still no dark mode. I love reading the New York Times late at night in bed, but the screen is so bright with the white background that it hurts my eyes and sometimes wakes my partner up. Can we please just get a dark mode? 🥺 Update: it does have dark mode. There was just an error with my device where it was not changing as it was supposed to. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it is working now. Hooray! I changed my review to five stars. I’m so sorry for being a goofy goober.

A Real Pain on the iPhone. The Times’s content is just fine, and if you want the news of the day, it’s certainly a contender for your business. From a tech standard, its many interactive features are a big plus, too. But it is inserting ever more active ads— video and the like— and it’s causing loading problems on the iPhone. (Mine’s a Xs Max). So when you first load the app and come out of an article, it will jump all over the place, causing you to lose your place in the queue, and sometimes within an article as well. In addition, the ads are extremely distracting— you have to move the article around to get them out of view. I’m sure some advertisers think this is a great way to get business, and to them, I can only say: you guys are out of your minds! If the app didn’t provide a better experience on the iPad, I’d really consider going back to paper only or try competing news apps.

Flashing ads every few sentences -no thanks!. Flashing, moving ads every few sentences after paying for articles is far from worth the subscription $$$. I shouldn’t be pummeled with ads if I pay for the app…if I’d known that ahead of time, I never would’ve subscribed! The article layout of the app itself isn’t great either. When I choose my interests, it still includes headlines of things I’m not interested in, so I have to click on tabs to hunt articles down. The search isn’t exactly helpful either, there’s no obvious date when past articles were written, so you have to click on each individually in order to find out if it’s new or old. There’s no archive of games available, only the ones posted for that day —unless I want to login through a browser which defeats the point of the app. Did I mention it’s chock full of distracting ads amidst every last stinking article? Unsubscribed immediately.

Fix your app!! “oops something went wrong”!. Update July 25, 2021 This app still can’t handle the heavy graphics and ads! “Sorry something went wrong, please try again later”. OVER AND OVER!! This app cannot display its own content. Too many bells, whistles, and elaborate ads crash it. I cannot even look at the COVID updates section because “oops something went wrong. Try again later” comes up. The app a has improved over time but there are still many problems. My biggest gripe is the article search feature is almost worthless. Every time I look for a specific article I can’t find it. The results are random and with no discernible order. There is NO way to choose even the most basic sorting of say, chronological order for results. It’s infuriating! Also the ads are HUGE and take much scrolling to get past. And they will reorder the screen while you’re trying to read them. This is just insulting. I’m already paying for the content, but to also have to deal with HUGE, annoying, and inappropriate unwanted ads on top of it is not reasonable. Of course I understand the need for the news to maximize revenue, but there has to be a better compromise.

Could be better. This app is not easy to navigate. I get emailed the headlines each day when I click on the article in the email, it only directs me to the app 1/2 the time. And it’s quite inconsistent. Additionally, when I go to the app, to find the story, it’s not in the headlines on the app and I have to do a search. But finding the search is odd. You have to go to the last tab, sections. Why would search be there? That doesn’t make any sense. It should be on the main tab. And sometimes you can’t even find the article, which is even more ridiculous. The app needs updating and it should absolutely match the emailed content. Other apps automatically take you to the app when you click on their content from their own emails. This app should do the same. Especially since you can’t access most of the content without being a paid subscriber.
