Simple, Elegant and Effective. I never write reviews, but I just have for Subtext. To borrow a familiar phrase, this app “Just Works”. It is simple, easy to use, and everything works the way it should. I love that it integrates with my Dropbox files to on my iPhone and iPad. My thanks to the developer.

understated. this app is worth a five star review because: 1. it’s free. like Really Free, also free of ads. 2. the file size of the app is less than a megabyte. 3. dark mode 4. line numbers 5. no frills interface-not a lot of options for appearance customization, no need (imo). 6. seamless interface with ios’s files app 7. honest !

Great app. This is an excellent app. I am a blind user, and this app is fully accessible with voice over. Other apps come with so much features, it nakes it hard for me to take notes, without pushing other buttons. Then there's problems saving things on ICloud drive. Some of the apps do not let you edit documents outside the iPhone. This app lets me save to my drive, and continue editing with my PC. I absolutely love this app. I hope it's always available.

Simple. Easy. Does what it says.. What can I say. Free - check. No data collected - check. Simple plain text editor - check. Can print - check. Great little app. Does exactly what I need.

Picky about file names. Would be great, except it refuses to open or create many files based only on the file name. I don’t have the desire or time to constantly rename files before and after editing. A plain-text editor should open any file even if viewing it as character data results in a bunch of gobbledygook being displayed. File name extensions are a 40year old relic of DOS. In most other operating systems, before and since, the dot and extension are just arbitrary characters like the first part of the name and mainly used for filtering searches.

A Godsend. Nick Lockwood has crafted an absolute gem for iOS; a privacy-respecting, sub-500k plain text editor that is also free?! Feels like an elegant tool from a more civilized age.

Wow. What an amazing editor.

Excellent basic text editor. Subtext is ideal for me as a text editor. Simple interface, line numbers, line wrap or not, encoding choices. It shows in the share sheet. The find and replace feature "replace all" if you press and hold "replace." This is pretty common in most text editors. Subtext is a terrific editor, no ads, completely free.

Literally perfect. I just wanted notepad.. Sometimes you just need to write some quick things in notepad to a txt file. Why is this not more highly rated? I just want to edit some thingies without fuss. No data collection. OLED dark mode. Barely any settings, don’t need any. The app is like 400KB. You can open multiple windows on iPadOS or do slide over. Basically perfection.

Amazing. Simple and Just Works. I don’t know why it’s so hard to find a simple text editor that can edit files in place in the iOS Files app. This app does exactly that and is free simple and easy to use. Kudos to the developer.

Wow. Subtext is a perfect example of a developer successfully coding a slim, efficient, easy to use, and very popular text editor.

Simple is best. If you are looking for simplicity and functionality this is the best editor for IOS.

Nice! But missing text size. The only crucial thing that needs to be added is the text size settings (without limits, please). Otherwise — an ideal text editor. There's an optional idea: kind of a 'distraction free writer' mode with serif fonts and centering all text in a ~60% with column, without line numbers or anything, just text. Then it would be even better than ideal.

Ok but wonky. Strange problems with capitalization, appearing randomly, particularly after paste.

File saving is a problem. Although this is a nice text editing app, it does not edit existing documents. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out why my edits kept getting lost. After a long search, I discovered that the app is making an extra copy and saving edits into a different location - its own folder.

Less is more.. No account creation required. No subscription. No ads. No user data collected. No bloated "productivity" features or AI. Just simple clean text editor that does its job. Solid 10/10.

Simple text editing. It has been unbelievably difficult trying to find a simple text editor that behaves well with voiceover and Voice control combined. I wish developers included details about how accessible their apps are. The only thing I can think of that would make this editor even better is including it in the share sheet so you can send files to the editor from the Files app. Update: Unfortunately, this app only recognizes a limited number of file extensions so it is not possible to edit .tex files without renaming them. For now, the search continues until this restriction is lifted.

Simple, elegant text editor indeed!. A basic app that is exactly what I need on my iPad: take notes, copy and paste without formatting, and coding to flesh out and run later. This is an app that should be included with Apple OS, like Notepad is included with MS Win.
