SafeWA App Description & Overview

What is safewa app? SafeWA is a free digital COVID-19 contact register system.

The system, developed by WA Health is a secure and convenient way for venue operators and patrons to easily register their attendance at relevant venues. Through a unique venue QR code, SafeWA supports efficient COVID-19 contact tracing, should it be necessary, by providing a digital register of contact details for patrons attending venues.

The digital register was developed exclusively for WA Health and is provided at no cost to WA venue operators or the public, as part of mandatory requirements to maintain a contact register, and is an extra precautionary measure in line with COVID safe principles.

Key features include:

· Venue operators may register for a unique QR code or multiple codes for multi-function venues.

· Patrons can scan venue QR codes to register their attendance at the venue (name, contact telephone number, optional email, date and log-in time).

· Attendance data is recorded solely for the purposes of contact tracing, should it be required by WA Health.

· Data is encrypted at the point of capture.

· Records are stored securely for a maximum of 28 days.

· Records are only accessible to authorised WA Health contact tracing personnel should a positive COVID-19 case be identified.

· Permissions to use device camera.

SafeWA is the digital venue check-in technology endorsed by WA Health.

SafeWA Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Constantly logging me out. The app is fine when it stays open, but lately every time I open it I’m required to re-login. It seems to defeat the point of a quick “check-in” so I end up just doing the paper option most of the time.

Randomly broken. After months of using this app every day, a recent update has logged me out and refuses to let me sign back in despite the correct login info. I press the login button, it spins, and nothing happens.

Does not support international number. Update up for international number or to allow to register via email.

Deficient system capabilities. The WASafe app does not accept international phone numbers. Surely for the safety of all this is a simple software fix that should have been considered from the outset.

Scanning takes too long. Scanning takes far too long; should take less than a few hundred milliseconds but takes at least one second. Also craps out when you have no internet connection

Doesn’t support international numbers. I managed to break the app entering an international number. All I get is a grey screen, I tried deleting and reinstalling the app, and restarting my phone but it’s still just showing a grey screen. I do not have an Australian number, and I am not going to get one just to use this app. Update 29/12: Over a week later and app is still broken. Have not been logging entries very diligently due to this. Hope there is no outbreak in WA, won’t be safe!

User unfriendly. Very user unfriendly for visitors using a foreign number who are trying to do the right thing and set the tracer app up. I’ve tried dozens of times to set it up with a NZ phone number and the verification code never arrives. I’m a kiwi regularly visiting WA.

Won’t let me log in with an established account. Can’t login despite several tries. We need folks to use these apps. Please don’t make them difficult and time consuming to use. :(

US Mobile # not recognized. I tried to register my USA mobile. This app did not recognize my selection and kept defaulting to Australia. Deleted it.

App stopped working for no reason. My SafeWA App has been working perfectly up until the last week. Now the scan screen is black and won’t scan the QR codes. I’ve tried logging out of the app and back in, leaving it for a day or so in between. I’ve also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app without success. So now I have to manually sign in which is extremely frustrating. I used to like the app because it worked so well and saved time, but now I’m very unimpressed.

No longer works at a time when I really need it to!. This app was fine to begin with. Opened easy enough and allowed me to log in and then check in to a venue. However now it refuses to open up and continually goes round and round! Any idea how frustrating it is when there is a line of people and I’m trying to sign in with phone. I now have to use pen and paper which defeats the point of having the app. Developers you need to sort this issue! Same again!! Have tried to delete and reinstall app but again fails to open up to the camera screen when I need it to.

Check own history option. It would be useful for it to have an option that you could look at your own history of where you have checked in and at what time. This would make it easier for ppl to know if they were at a hotspot without having to wait for contact tracers to get in touch

Couldn’t be easier. This was simple quick and up and running in no time at all. I completely understand why this is being implemented and applaud WA Health for taking this on. I know I’m not being tracked unless there is an outbreak and then I will be the beneficiary. It’s a no-brainer!

Needs updating to meet needs. I think the premise of the app is good but from a hospitality perspective the most pressing issue is that Parents/ Carers need to be able to save contact details of the people they are with. Parents with adult disabled children cannot quickly and seamlessly add their child to the app. Same goes for people caring for their elderly relatives and professional carers who are working with people who may have intellectual disabilities. This could be fixed by adding a list of frequent contacts which can be saved in the app. This is extremely important given this virus is likely to adversely affect these communities first. Please fix.

Very basic check in app. Way behind the other states - surely by now we should be able to view the the last 30 days of our check in history. How are we to check if we’ve been to an exposure site. Still not able to link our digital vaccination certificate. Victoria app which I set up for my elderly mother is way better, perhaps the developers need to contact the ones in other states to find out how. Disappointed the app has barely changed in 12 months.

Absolutely rubbish. Terrible app. Like others I am also locked in the verify credentials page. There is not back button to take you back to the previous page, and when you delete the app and install it again, it just takes you back to the same page! The support team have never emailed me back after the 5 times I have emailed them and the phone support are also not able to fix it. Make sure all your details are correct when you first set it up so you don’t end up like the rest of us!!

Failing to connect. App is supposed to need periodic connections to the internet to upload data. I had five failures in a row in a shopping centre where it stated that the internet connection was slow or it failed to connect to the wifi. Everywhere outside the shopping centre it worked flawlessly. Pretty good apart from that. Could scan a bit quicker but I think that might be hardware not software

Scale screen and auto dismiss OK. The app needs to scale the success screen to fit on the screen even on small phones like the SE. as is you have to scroll to get to the Done button every time! Also the Done button should auto dismiss after 5 minutes. It’s crazy pulling out your phone an hour later to check in some where and having to dismiss the last check in first.

Record of use for user. It would be beneficial if the user could see a record of places, dates & times where they have scanned in, especially if venues are publicised as a place of transmission. Bank records are the only way of knowing where we’ve been. To be able to check & know if we’ve been to a place, purchase or not, would be good.

Great App but problems. The WA App is easy to use and it needs to be recognised for being superior to that used in Victoria. It’s behind the scenes functionality nearly makes the Federal Covid Safe app obsolete for all but extended casual contacts away from monitored premises. That said the App appears to be causing problems on some iPhones where they cannot access the web when using mobile data and the SafeWA app is also rendered inactive. Some under hood work need my the developers to find the cause is this sporadic problem that doesn’t impact all phones.

Need a feature to review previous check in’s. We need to be able to look back at least two weeks and see where and when we have checked in. I can’t easily keep track of where I’ve been on what day at what time when new exposure sites get listed from a week or two ago. If we had this as a feature in the app more people would know to get tested or quarantine and would put less strain on the contact tracing teams and hopefully reduce the spread. Would not be difficult to implement and would be of great help!

Cumbersome and confusing. Setting this up was ridiculously complicated. Navigating between so many different government apps to set up. Not sure either why it is necessary to have yet another government is. Why can the MyGov id not be used as the MyGovID given they are clearly linked with an ability to share information. There is absolutely no way that older people are going to be able to manage setting up an account in this app.

Great work on the app but in needs extra. Hi Team, love the app but you really need a section in the business version that allows a retail store with multiple staff to save a list of their worker details. You have a “saved visitors list” but this does not allow any action to manually check in the listed staff. Should be able to tap on a given name in the “saved visitor list” and be given the option to manually check them in. This would be a beneficial addition you could make ASAP! Desperately needed as WA has just come out of Covid lockdown!

Could do with some updates. I’m very happy to use this to help keep our state safe! It would be easier and quicker, when checking someone else in as well, if there was the option to give the app access to your contacts. I’ve also occasionally forgotten to check in somewhere. It would be useful if you could retrospectively check in. Will keep using this app. Much safer that the written check in with the communal pen!

Where’s my data?. It would be good if the app saved all the data being collected, currently we only see the last place visited. As a minimum I would expect to keep my own copy of my own data. Also it would be good to know who has used, processed, algorithm-ised any of the data collected so far.

One mobile for work and personal?. I have a single mobile number, which I used to set up for my personal registration at restaurants etc, but now I’ve gone to register my business (which needs to be separate from personal) and I’m stuck! I don’t have another mobile number to use and don’t want to use someone else’s in case someone calls about my business? Why can’t a number be used for multiple sign ins when so many people have a personal phone used for work? I’m also stuck between “enter verification” and “edit personal details”. I need to go further back to log out and go into my personal profile to be able to register at venues!!

Does not recognise my account. After creating and using the App for close to a month, suddenly it doesn’t recognise my details. When I try to create a new account, the App says I already have an account!! Conclusion: not able to log in ( says wrong user) or create new account ( says you already have one). Very, very frustrating as I want to do the right thing. UPDATE: Appreciate that got a prompt response from the Developer. Finally, managed to reset it and make the App work before going to Margaret River👍👏 Thanks.

Frustrating. Was okay until I did an update. Now it is not accepting my password. I renewed password twice and it still didn’t accept. Finally managed to get to accept. Now each time I close the app it logs me out, takes ages to load and won’t accept my password again despite being very careful and precise. I have just spent 10 minutes trying to load it so I could check in at a supermarket. Needs sorting ASAP or it is as good as useless as I gave up in the end and didn’t check in :(

Love it and use daily. Really happy to use this app, and do so several times a day. The new feature of adding a regular ‘additional’ person (or more) will greatly improve it. It was something I was going to mention! Only other suggestion is to please default as the individual. It’s a two step process currently if have to switch to individual each scan. Feel confident being out and about with this app available. Thankyou!

Fed Up. Today is the second day in a week where I’ve been asked to log back into the app. But today nothing is working & it says there is an error. Can’t even send me an sms to reset my password which I know I don’t have wrong. It’s really not good enough. There are so many people that don’t even bother to sign in at shops, etc but I’m always a stickler. I can’t be bothered having to sign in on a sheet every time. They really need to lift their game or more people will just stop using the app out of frustration! 😥😰

Needs function to add family or friends. App works well, just needs to add a function of saving others contact details within the app. We always have our family when we go places so so stand and block the doorway while adding the rest of the family doesn’t make the scenario flow. Having the option to add people then just search and tick them as with you would make the process seamless. Thanks for helping keep us safe.

Slight update needed.. Works well but have found on my iPhone 11 with zoomed mode the Done button is off the bottom of the screen and needs to be scrolled to access. A bit annoying given the number of times the app needs to be used on a daily basis. Perhaps move it up a little.

Decent with a feature request. Straight forward to use, was able to add my partner and son, using her mobile number for both, so we can all check in together. Feature request time : being able to add our vaccine status to the app would be a good idea

Broken Reset Function. App is brilliant but I’ve been logged out, forgotten my password and now no matter how many times I try to send a reset link to my email, nothing comes through. I’ve heard of many other people having a similar issue.

Hard to edit. I accidentally set my app up as business instead of personal because I’m a Disability support worker and thought I was just putting in the name of my employer and now it’s always popping up as business and I can’t seem to change it over stupid thing lol I have to go to personal account every time before I can check in and tried to delete it to re download it freshly but no joy very frustrating

Need to be able to see past check ins. It would be very helpful to be able to look at your past check ins to help you track your own movements in the previous week. This way you could quickly see if you were at any of the locations identified as exposure sites at the same time as active cases.

Needs offline accessibility. The app works well, unless you have no access to the internet for those of us not on the Telstra network. It should include the ability to work offline and then upload the details when next connected. Edit: The response from the developer misses the point of my feedback entirely! I realise you can check in manually but I don’t want to manually check in and have the whole world see my mobile contact details, I was suggesting an update to the app to allow remote check in and update the register when connected to wife.

History. Love the idea of the app and use it all the time. Recently had the experience of visiting COVID hot spots, so a suggestion- it would be a great idea if we could access our history of where we have been. I was a bit unsure of the actual times I had been to these places and this would make it easier to check, instead of waiting for someone to contact me.

Needs work. Easy set up and worked two or three times. Then following one further use the app dropped off my phone screen and I now have to go to the App Store every time and open from there with the login details. There seems no way I can reset the password or anything to make it work properly again when sending review the necessity for a nickname is ridiculous as every nickname that’s related to anything is taken

Effective design. This app works great, and it needs to be noted that it is functionally MILES ahead of any other states’ attempts at check in apps, even though it is very simple. Having the scanner open automatically makes it so much faster to use, making it more likely that people will bother to do so. Glad WA created their own app, it’s clearly been worth it.

Needs to be Apple Watch compatible. It’s more convenient than signing in manually to venues. However, these days with my Apple Watch I can leave my phone behind for quick and easy trips to the shops and gym etc. Did this the other day and learnt very quickly that the app isn’t compatible with the watch. Big shame. Definitely would be handy to have this updated for compatibility.

Default account options. Generally happy with the App. Simple and easy to set up and much easier than signing in manually. I would really like to see it default to my personal account since I use it to check in all the time but only needed to complete the business setup once so now it’s unnecessarily cumbersome to switch to the individual account each time. Alternatively allow users to select which account they want as their default.

Awesome, if possible iPad Support.. Love using the app, it’s easy and simply. Would live to see iPad support for a full experience and for the app to take up the whole iPad screen. People can scan and manually enter there details into the iPad. The iPad is also an easier surface to clean and sanitise compared to paper. Hope to hear from you guys and see support soon. Keep up the great work!

Can’t use same phone number twice. I was trying to set up my adult disabled daughters SafeWA app but it would not allow me to complete it despite trying about 6 times and was about to give up. I was using my email address and my mobile number as she doesn’t cope with getting phone calls or emails to herself. About to give up and then I thought to try her mobile number (despite not wanting to do this) and finally it went through!! Please consider parents of teenagers or Carers that either don’t have a mobile phone that they can use and therefore the Carers/Parents need to use their mobile number yet again, not just for themselves but others in the family and your App won’t let them!

Save additional visitors. The app works well but needs enhancements. Suggest that you have the ability to save people who accompany you often. Having to enter family members names and numbers each time is frustrating and time consuming. Being able to select them from a drop down box would be great. Hope to see this feature soon.

Basic and counter-intuitive. To make this app more desirable for people to use, there is a few things you can add. 1. Able to store multiple people in when adding yourself—it is very time consuming when adding the same people (family members) every time. 2. When you have scanned and finished adding all the people, (10 minutes later) it doesn’t say complete, it shows the scan again, it makes you think it hasn’t worked. 3. It would be good if you had a reference where you have been, that way if there was a COVID-19 outbreak, we could track ourselves when it is mentioned in the media.

Pathetic. Terribly written app!! Slow to use, constantly logs me out, it’s annoying enough to use the app, but when you go to use it and find you have been logged out i just don't bother and skip checking in. Totally defeats the purpose of the app in the first place!! Worst still it is totally reliant on data to work!! So if you’re in an area that doesn’t have any network coverage you’re stuffed! Once again defeating the purpose of having the app in the first place!!! Seriously I hope the West Australian government didn’t pay more than a couple hundred bucks for this thing!

A literal lifesaver. Brilliant app. People should be less concerned about privacy and realise they are helping to save lives when embracing the use of this app. It is great that you can now see where you last checked in so that if you have to prove to staff that you’ve checked in it is easily accessible.

Functional and easy to use. Generally works well, and preferable to having to sign in manually (although that option should be maintained wherever possible, as some will be unable to use the app, and the desired result is obviously to have the information available if required). It would be useful however to be able to save the details of other people who frequently accompany the user, and to be able to select those names from a list as required, rather than having to enter the details manually each time.

Worked well to start. Now buggy. The app has been easy to use so far, but the last three days it’s been a pain. Logs me out, won’t log back in. And feedback from friends suggests that they’re having the same problem. I don’t want to have to reset my password every time I need to use the app. Also it doesn’t work well for employees. By the time I’ve finished my shift the app has already logged me out of my workplace location. So for who knows how long I’m not registered. We need an option for workers to input the time they will be leaving.

All for it but app is annoying. I’m ok with the SafeWA app and am prepared to use it but it’s so frustrating. I need to sign in every time I want to use it which is a pain especially when you’re holding up those behind you trying to log in. Just fix it, let it keep you signed in or allow an option to remember your details (because that’s not working either).

App in zombie state - uninstall doesn’t fix. My partner has the app installed and it autocompleted her phone number starting with a +61 which clipped the end of the number off. The edit personal details button takes her to a grey screen with no edit controls and is completely broken. I have found no way to make it forget the incorrect number, despite uninstalling, turning off iCloud backups for the app and some other suggested solutions to apps that won’t forget their data. Buggy and downright impossible for her to use currently.

Doesn’t always work - very frustrating. Every day when try to use app for the first time the app doesn’t work - either have to reenter user & password and then still doesn’t work or goes straight to unable to connect with server. Only way it starts to work is if I completely turn my phone off then on again (which takes awhile to close down) then have to restart the app which then takes ages to load. Have an iPhone 7plus with telstra but husband who has an iPhone 5or6 plus also with telstra works fine all the time - very frustrating

Fix this buggy app. Having the exact same problem as hundreds of others. When setting up app and incorrect phone number accidentally entered there is no way to get app working. It just locks you to the verify pin page. Edit details just takes you to a blank screen. Called WA COVID support number in app who obviously know stuff all about troubleshooting this issue in, followed their advice to go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage (scroll down to find SafeWA app) Select SafeWA app > Delete App > Confirm Delete App to delete App and all its documents and data. Reinstalled app and it goes straight back to the verify incorrect phone number page. Obviously deleting app doesn’t clear everything from cache or app sends device identifier to server every time it’s reinstalled and old number gets put back in. Did this multiple times to no use. Restarting iPhone after deleting. Emailed COVID tech support a few times but got no response. Why can’t the developer at least Acknowledge this common problem in a reply or on the SafeWa troubleshooting web page!

This app is useless. Same as many others, the app logged me out then wouldn’t recognised my login details. I started to create a new account and the app auto generated my phone number, incorrectly. Now it’s sending a pin to a non valid number but doesn’t recognise it’s not long enough. The given number to call for troubleshooting is useless, their comment was “oh.” There is no option to edit details, gives a blank grey screen. There is no option to reset anything. Why is the developer not replying to issues? Should our next stop be the local MP and the WA gov to get it looked into?

Need to improve convenience feature. It is great that it allows us to add another person in the same visit., but would be a lot better if the app allows us to save additional person’s info so that all we need to do is tick the person(s) which is already on our saved list - rather than typing the name and phone number each time. The more convenient the more compliance rate!

App does the job but could be improved to help speed up checkin. Please add a function to be able to make additional profiles for checkin. This will speed up the checkin process if i can click on additional people, then click on the profiles i have made for the people i normally checkin with (ie:family), instead of having to type in everyones name and number everytime.

Ridiculous. An app that needs data for everyone to be able to use in a pandemic? What a ridiculous base assumption to make. Would give zero stars if possible for a mean and elitist approach. These people should be utterly ashamed of themselves. Also no ability to check your own list of movements except the last check in. Flawed set ups with mobile numbers required and not mentioned on sign up. Read the reviews for a good hint at how not to make an app easy to use, universal and accessible. Take note of the company that came up with this rubbish (GenVis).

Easy to use but can be improved. So much quicker and easier than filling in a paper sheet, well done WA for keeping us safe. I’d love to see some tweaks though. Remembering who you’ve included before so it’s simple click would speed things up. Also remembering where you’ve been to quickly ‘tag in’ again would be useful to avoid queuing up
