WATERROWER Connect Comments & Reviews 2026

Very limited. This app does little except track your current row and your lifetime rows with the app. There’s no option to export. It’s not integrated with Apple Watch or any other apps. Let’s hope this is a stop along the way to more integration. What was this supposed to accomplish?

No longer able to log workouts. Used the app to log manual workouts while I evaluated the app and my situation for further integration/connectivity. Can no longer log manual workouts and existing working history cannot be accessed. Will explore other app options now. 1 star for my purposes but gave another star for potential.

Connectivity Non Existent. Through two updates now, I’m no longer able to connect my CityRow standard rower to my phone or iPad. The app sees the rower, but won’t let me start a row once it’s connected. It’s too bad because this was a great app.

Needs some serious improvements and testing.. I wanted to like this app. The problems are, however, numerous. First of all it is not tested enough. The connectivity is not very stable ( it often takes multiple cycle of restarting the Bluetooth module, the application, etc to connect). Quite often the connection seems established, but the app is not reading the module and The numbers are frozen and not changing (it starts reading abc then stops). The app is not reading the heart rate from the phone. After my 40 min workout the average heart rate (is 50) which makes absolutely no sense. The calories are also not recorded properly. The averages are generally useless if the workout involves power strokes and periods of rest. Basically this app needs some significant improvements and bug fixes to be useful.

Could be better. Here are some ideas to make the app even better - 1. The total time on the dashboard should not reset after 24 hours. Doesnt make any sense. 2. There should be some customization options. E.g. if I want to see how many kms i rowed between x and y dates i should be able to get that info. 3. Any way to show the battery of the com module on the app would be worth it. 4. I dont see my workout data in Apple health although the app can send data to it and it shows as connected.

Bare Bones. This app looks sleek. And when I first set it up it seemed to work nice and easily with my Bluetooth Comm. I connected it to Strava and it uploaded my first two workouts. I also found it connected quickly to my TickrX HRM. However, today it wouldn’t upload my workout to Strava. Then I found that I could add manual activities, but not delete them. And when I looked for a help section or a way to contact app support I haven’t found a thing or a way to contact support. So when the app works it works great. Doesn’t have bells and whistles, but it looks nice and does what it needs to do. However, when it doesn’t work there doesn’t seem to be any way to get any help or support which is very frustrating.

works for the basics. Easy to set up your own interval or program and row. Although sound is turned on, there are no in program sound effects so you must keep watching the screen to see how many seconds are left on your interval. There is no way to pause your workout.

Subscription stopped work early. My subscription stopped working a month before the paid end. Contacted support, their resolution didn’t fix the issue. So now I’ve paid for something that’s not being provided.

Monitor and App connection is not impressive. I own both a C2 RowErg with PM5 and the WaterRower with the Series IV PM with S4 Comms 33. I am less than satisfied with WaterRower, the App and PM. The Rower is nice and has a great sound and feel, the PM is OK. This is the Nth workout the monitor and app have not connected and basically wasted. I feel like I wasted the money updating the PM to the S4 and Bluetooth upgrade. Half the time they won’t connect, and half the time they do it won’t sync my workout. At least if it would save on the PM it could transfer later like the PM5. If you are looking between getting the C2 RowErg or the WaterRower I would recommend the C2 9 out of 10 times. The one time I wouldn’t is if you just want to row and not log data then the WaterRower is fine. Feeling frustrated.

Excellent progress display. Progress is easy to monitor as the display is bright and well laid out. I do wish for one feature: How about a beep when distance/time is reached

Basic. No ability to delete or edit workouts On the dashboard, its says my latest workout is from last November despite going in history and seeing all workouts up to today. It shows calories burn in midst of workout but doesn’t record it as part of the workout history. There’s other nits but these are the primary for me

Almost insulting. This app is so buggy and poorly developed, it’s almost insulting to us Waterrower customers. I tried really hard to work with the bugs and find the right sequence of tasks to enable the phone to connect correctly, and then push the workout to Strava. It bugs at every corner. Whoever built this did zero QA or UAT before pushing into production. I’m sending the Bluetooth dongle back and giving up on this.

Oh Thank you for fixing the problems. Thanks to the developers for fixing the software that it was intended for. In my case I have a Waterrower Club S4 so just being able to keep record of my workouts is great !

The app is nice but doesn’t seem to actually connect with apple health as a standalone. I read reviews of Apple Watch causing rowing to be double counted so I don’t use the watch when I row. I’ve turn on sharing with the apple health app and it’s supposed to integrate the data automatically, but after several days, it has not. I like being able to track my rowing, so I won’t delete the app, but not having it integrate the activity into apple health is a big downside considering it’s supposed to.

Does’t share data with Apple Health. iPad Air 2 iPadOS 15.7.9/iPhone 11 iOS 16.6 - I use the Waterrower app on my iPad to track my progress. The iPad gathers the data from the S4 and then shares it with the Waterrower app on my iPhone. The Waterrower app on my iPhone is set to share it with Apple Health. But I do not see any of the data on Apple Health. I open Apple Health and go to Summary > Active Energy > Data Sources & Access > Waterrower and it is says No Data. All three apps have been updated. I don't have Apple Health on my iPad because it is an older iPad. Not sure where else to inquire so…

Training Programs. Training programs are good/fun but it would be helpful to see what the program is before I start. The screen during the exercise isn’t specific so I don’t know where to be. It would be nice to see the exercise plan/splits before beginning.

Worst app ever. I cannot believe Water Rower allowed this app to be published. I do t know who the developer was but this is shameful. It’s 2021 not 2001. We have come a long way. It never works correctly. Too many error messages. It’s basically unusable.

Needs development. I really want to like this app, but it just doesn’t get the job done. The intervals aren’t truly intervals, meaning you can’t see separate splits for each interval, everything is averaged over the total duration of the workout, including the planned rests. Sometimes the app doesn’t start the workout. When it does, and my watch is connected to track HR, Apple records two separate workouts from WaterRower Connect - one with HR and one without. Further, there will often be a dozen 0 minute workouts recorded that I have to manually delete.

App regularly misreports rowing distance. The app somehow freezes about 500m into a row and doesn’t record the rest of it. Perhaps related to the app being updated, but it gets updated frequently it seems. Really makes all of the integrations less useful when the record of the row is regularly so wrong

Lots of bugs. Had to restart the alpso many times. The connection drops, terrible. I hope it improves cause it used to work fine and one day startwd crashing. And all my os is uldated by the way

Connects easy. For what it is, it’s not bad at all. Once you order and plug in the Com Module from WaterRower, it connects easily to the iPhone app via Bluetooth. The only addition data point it provides is stroke count for your workout. The only thing it really does is store your workouts by date which is more the the S4 on the WaterRower can do on it’s own, and so for free, that’s worth 3 stars for sure. If the developers could prioritize the necessary enhancement of coordination with the Apple Health app they’d have winner. For the vast majority of folks who can afford a WaterRower in their home or apartment, this is really all anyone wants. Let people connect two devices they really love and let them feel good about that. That would get four stars.

New app update is horrible. Loved the simplicity of this app and have been using it with my Water Rower for almost 3 years, but they recently updated the UI of the app and not only deleted all of my existing custom interval workouts, but removed the ability to create and save custom workouts altogether. Horrible idea and makes the app a giant pain in the you know what to use now. Boooo Water Rower!

Awful app. This app is terrible. Just bought a water rower vs a concept 2 b/c I thought apps looked slicker. Big mistake! Equipment is well built by IT is really not worth anything. Paid a lot of $$ for my rower.... would have expected some investment in IT by the company . wanted to buy a local product. I would NOT recommend.

Good, needs ability to sync between devices. Overall works great to track workouts, nothing flashy, but works well. Would be nice if workout history could sync between devices.

Looks Modern. I’m a bit baffled by the redundancy between the S4 and this app. It counts your strokes? That’s what I spent $60 on? I already log my rows manually. The workout record is trapped in the app as far as I can tell. It seems to play nicely with Strava and Apple Health if that’s important to you. You are also blocked from plugging in the cable for “we-row” which apparently has no Bluetooth support. I feel like I’ve been taking crazy pills. WR and hi tech don’t mix. The July 2024 update is abhorrent. The numbers were hard to read while erging, but now with the new font they’re virtually invisible. The new ‘save’ color is completely different. Why? Who’s behind the redesign? It represents major step’s backwards. Criminal even.

App not working with iOS update. iPhone OS updated, now app doesn’t work. I get the blue drop of water on the screen, but nothing else. App worked fine on Monday.

Latest update has broken it. This was working fine until the latest update, now it doesn’t record my workout data any more :(

Very Disappointed. This is the app made by the company that makes the water rower. You would think it would be maintained and a solid offering. As it is, I can’t even get it to connect to my iPhone since the most recent apple update. I checked their website and now it looks like water rower has jumped into the subscription market with smart row, but that different and far more expensive add ons. It seems they’ve forgotten to keep up with their existing customers.

It doesn’t work under iOS15.. Once I upgraded to iOS 15, the app ceased to work. Please go back the previous interface where finding/connecting to bluetooth device comes before exercise selection. Terrible decision the place BT selection at the end!

Waste of money and time. The water rower requires a $60 add on to do what other rowers do for far less money and still cannot get anything even limited functions to work with this app. Save your money, no idea why this app or Bluetooth interface were released, second rate product enhancement.

Good Idea But Poor Execution. I picked up a Bluetooth module for my WaterRower with the hopes of connecting to my iPhone and Apple Watch. In theory it works but a lot of the metrics (heart rate, etc) are incorrect. Also this app shuts off when not on your phone, this is easily fixable by the developers but hasn’t been done for some reason. This app needs a lot of work, I’ll continue to use it but it is not enjoyable...

Poor stability. Missing key features. Not worth the effort.. I couldn’t get it launch at all on an iPad mini 2, just hangs at start showing the logo but no UI. This kills my main use case, but I tried it from another device to see if I could still make it work. I get it to work sometimes, but I’ve seen it connect to the Commodule and then drop the connection. The app just stops getting data and the only option is to force close and start over. Which leads to the other major problem, there is no way to delete bad workout records so you end up with a bunch of no-data workouts. I’ll end up trying the Commodule with Cityrow Go so hopefully it won’t be a waste of money assuming the issues are with the app and not the module. If you just want data you might just want the more expensive SmartRow upgrade, but that doesn’t work with CityRow and is a lot more expensive.

Works with FDF rowers. I have First Degree Fitness Apollo V, and this is one of the few apps that works with it, and for a free app it is miles ahead of their original one. However, it does lack some features. I’d like to be able to delete a workout (haven’t found how to). And calories count passed to Apple Health is accumulated set of averages per point, which leads to 20 min workout burn about 160,000 cal.

Very sad. Thought I would use the shelter at home requirement to take my rowing to the next interactive level. Spent $60 on a device to use this app. App doesn’t connect and is a waste. Water Rower is a fine machine, but they don’t have a viable interactive module Can easily see other fine indoor rower manufacturers, who have a tech edge, push Water Rower to the sideline.

Needs work. It’s rudimentary and needs work. Examples, (1) if you set up some custom workouts to save, you can’t later delete or edit them. So if you want to evolve your workout over time, e.g., increase interval times or decrease rest times - you can’t edit an existing workout you have to set up an entirely new one (2) I use this on an iPad Pro 12.9” screen - as big as you can go. But during a workout in say interval mode, the data is impossibly small to read - like ridiculously so given the screen real estate that is not used / blank. Heart rate, strokes per minute - you can’t use them because you can’t read them while rowing (3) the scenic videos are odd because when you row on water you’re going backwards but these videos go forwards as if you’re kayaking not rowing Lots of simple improvements could make this so much better

Rarely Connects. This app would be 4 stars if it could consistently connect to the BT device. Instead every attempt to connect results in a random and novel mode of not working … searching for a long time then not finding the device, reporting it not found immediately, finding it then crashing, etc. I’ve been budgeting 15 extra min to my workout windows to make this thing connect, and often just give up after wasting the time. This is a big miss for such a great rower, putting time into making this app work would be a smart investment!

Disappointing. I like the idea but it’s just missing so many basic features and basic calculations are wrong. For example, if I set up a 8x 500M intervals with 1:00 rest, shouldn’t the average pace metrics tell me how fast I rowed each of the 8x intervals? Seems like common sense, however the app calculates the average pace for the intervals PLUS THE REST TIME. I rowed each interval at ~1:45 pace, yet the app says my average pace was 2:51 because it includes the rest periods in the calcs...

Just bad!! No tracking. Why did WaterRower build a quality machine and get a crappy app developer? At first I could not connect the Comm module to the app. WaterRower sent me a new Bluetooth comm module and I was able to connect. But still the app is not tracking my rowing output. They are sending me a new S4 board but I have a feeling it is the app. The S4 monitor has been working perfectly.

Poorly designed. It’s too bad the developers didn’t allow a trial period for premium , I wouldn’t have wasted my money on a month. I find I still only use the free screen. There are only a couple of measurements I care about: time, stroke rate, and heart rate. The premium provides access to configuring heart rate zones based on age but doesn’t retain that information. Click one save and it still reverts to default settings. When configuring an HIIT workout out if it prompts for a name and has a save. There is no way to recall it.

Crap app and product. First off you need to purchase the Bluetooth ComModule $60 in order to use this app. When I paired the module to the app, I couldn’t get it to track my rowing. I tried to restart the module like the instructions said but it will not turn off no matter how long I hold the power button. I’ll be returning the module and deleting the app. I read all the other negative reviews stating that the app didn’t many features but I just wanted it to track what I had done. It couldn’t even do that.

Waste of $60 so far. Good news: connects immediately to phone or tablet Bad news: does absolutely nothing, doesn’t connect to display readings, timer or anything. Going to try another 3rd party ap otherwise I’m contacting WaterRower for refund attempt.

Just don’t bother.. The app is bad and the “com module” doesn’t even work. It’s bulky and cumbersome to use and charge. Not worth $20 let alone $65. Waterrower should be shipping the machines with Bluetooth capabilities and not doing this hackneyed thing. Beautiful rower, great experience rowing. Terrible technology. I’m a hobbyist and rowing for exercise so it doesn’t matter. I’ll turn my Apple Watch on and use that. But it’s just really bull crap they didn’t bother to do this even remotely right.

Doesn’t offer much else right now. I’m hoping this app offers more soon. Doesn’t offer anything more than I’ve already got with my on-machine monitor other than history. Hope to see a more immersive capability in the future

Wish I bought a Concept2. So, finally have Bluetooth connectivity (kind of, at a cost and buggy), and this is the best they could do? Wait, to really get useful feedback you need to spend another $275 for the SmartRow add on. If compatibility and technology are important to you, go with the Concept2 erg.

Useless. I am a beginner. Which means I need guidance, preferably visual.I have no idea what steady state means or how to do things properly. So I started the beginner program - 5 minutes to heat up. No explanation given what that means. 10 minutes steady state rowing - again, no explanation how to do that. 5 minutes to cool down , needless to say no explanation. Then comes the most interesting part - stretching. It just names the muscle and runs countdown. Am I supposed to know the muscle names and how to stretch them? I am a beginner , I expect you to provide instructions ! You charged me a lot of money for an absolutely useless product

Update Broke Connectivity. The app provides minimal information but at least it connected to my phone BEFORE the recent update. Now it doesn’t recognize my device and crashes if I try to connect my rower as a new device. Updated Review: The developer fixed the connectivity issue! I am happy with the information the app provides, though I understand if others want something more. But it provides basic workout data and does it well.

Bluetooth. Developer. Check for Bluetooth access when adding a com unit. Spend 2 hours on 2 separate devices trying manually add it. Finally just pressed start workout and it asked for access.

Basic Level Tracking / missing AppleWatch Heart Rate. Requires extra hardware - about $60 total to add Bluetooth on standard S4 Monitor (with USB). App is free - thank you. Allows very basic workouts - you to set simple time, distance or interval. Sync’s with Apple Health. Doesn’t include continuous heart rate monitoring via Apple Watch which is a major omission. This makes the App much less useful. Good first offering, but please add AppleWatch HRM.

Terrible app. They have not taken any suggestions from feedback and reviews and implemented them. 1. Need ability to delete, sort, edit workouts 2. Connectivity is spotty at best, only works if I manually connect in the app and in Bluetooth 3. There’s actually more functionality on the old school S4 monitor than the iPhone powered app! Frankly this is a glorified color version of the digital LCD stopwatch screen but far more frustrating because of the connectivity problems.

Unable to Log in. I’ve had my WaterRower for almost two years and initially loved the connect app. I enjoyed the training programs that came with the premium account and the feedback that the app provided. I’m not an Olympic rower so I only need the basics. Unfortunately, I worked abroad for most of last year and had not had access to my home gym for that time. After returning home I was excited to get back at it but upon attempting to login to the app I was met with a never ending loading page. I contacted support and wasn’t given any helpful information. I hope they get this fixed but I’m going to have to move on to another app. but

Best form of cardiovascular fitness. Using the waterrower app in unison with the Bluetooth commodule has been revelatory. Couldn’t recommend it more to anyone, certainly easy to use as well

Basic info with bugs. Basic functionality, seems to display less information than what’s on the Performance Monitor on the device. Strokes count doesn’t match up with actual strokes I do and over counts. Why do I need to create a third party account to use this? Use iCloud for backup of my data instead. Another data breach waiting to happen. Also sends empty workouts to Health app, so now Health tells me I did 70 workouts today. Couldn’t find a Support form to submit app feedback on the site.

Logging and sending 0 workout to apple health. Please read and fix the issue - I saw the other user had the same issue. This app basically sending empty work out data to apple fitness + / health. It’s under 2 categories - rower ( containing empty data and appears multiple times ) and WaterRower ( normally only appear once and seem to contain the correct data). Please investigate and fix this issue .. Thanks.

Very sad app. Use it because it's the official app but so slow, so buggy, heart rate is always zero, never reading heart rates from my Apple watch.

Beta App at Best. My expectation would be that the app would capture speed, stroke rate, and heart rate over time and upload them to Strave. Unfortunately it just captures overall distance and time as a manual entry in Strave. I’ll stick to Wahoo Fitness with an old Bluetooth speed sensor on the flywheel to capture my rows. This v1.3 app isn’t for anyone serious about their sports metrics. Hope v2 improves matters.

Disappointing. Can’t save interval workouts so need to recreate them every row, multiple empty rows saved to Apple Health. Considering the Bluetooth module costs $99 this is a real disappointment

Broken. I have been the app for years now and loved it. But the last update broke the app and is no longer usable.

still buggy. The latest release sees a premium subscription model which is fine. But it is still buggy. The Strava workout is submitted before the workout ends so the full workout is not being uploaded to Strava. That’s a pretty basic fault that didn’t happen in the earlier versions. I don’t like using a public forum for these little bugs but There is no developer information published to create a ticket for these issues I do the same workout each day. The previous workout could easily be stored and be the template for the current day. So 1. Add a support ticket system 2. Get Strava integration working. 3. Persist the previous workout as the default workout.

Poor Strava Integration. Bought the S4 Bluetooth CommModule so I could essentially connect to Strava. Whilst data such as heart rate, stroke rate, min/500mtr splits are recorded, they aren’t passed on to Strava. This is pretty basic stuff and should be automatically passed to Strava. I’ve been told this is in the works but wasn’t told when it would be done.

Why is a NOHrD account required for Apple Health sync?. I’ve owned my WaterRower for years, and the S4 Bluetooth adapter for the past few months. I have no interest in sharing my usage or other personal details, but like keeping track of my telemetry. Why is it necessary to create an account, and login to a superfluous service, in order to feed my sessions directly into my Apple Health log? It’s unnecessarily intrusive and creepy.

Connecting with Sportswatch. Decent enough but would like to see more sophisticated connectivity with hr sportswatch!

Heart rate monitor. Am I missing something - why doesn’t heart rate show in the app (iPad) if it gets its data from the S4 monitor and Bluetooth connection?

Wouldn’t pay for it. Landscape impossible so I can’t set it overtop the row monitor to hold it in place. Dealbreaker is that it doesn’t give a calorie count so your move ring on Apple Watch doesn’t budge. Definitely needs work before I’d buy it.

Rough and unpolished. Pairing with my WaterRower is super finicky and I don’t know if it’s successful until after I’ve started a rowing session and notice the stats are not updating. The app also doesn’t really work on landscape mode with the buttons not being clickable and the text not being visible. What the heck guys?

Terribly Crude. This app needs a significant amount of work before I would encourage anyone to use it.

Yes, Apple health integration please!. Maybe a rudimentary calorie counter? But first off, Apple health integration at the very least.

App does not connect to Apple health. Disappointed this app does not communicate with apple health, which was the whole reason I purchased the ComModule, so that I could track my rowing along with my weight training.

Confusing app. Very difficult to understand and no resources to explain anything.

Update broke it. App just searches and searches. I gave up using it for my workouts.

Won’t work at all. WaterRower should be embarrassed.

How to you manually input workouts?. Update notes mention that version 1.7.4 allows users to input their workouts manually without the need of the Bluetooth module. How can this be done?

Please finally update to ios15. Sync doesn’t work anymore Please update

Strava. Can’t seem to sync Strava account with app. Have turned multiple iOS devices. Seems like a WIP

Simple, but effective. This app just replaces the screen in the A4 and makes it a little easier to see during a workout. The only thing I wish it had was the ability to control Spotify or some music.

Why Bother. I get it, it’s a free app. Really should not complain, and I would not except that the app does not add much to the S4 monitor and the connectivity via Bluetooth is not good. I love my water rower! However, I would not recommend this app.

I’m confused. The app doesn’t show the same time as was is on the console of the rowing machine. I’m not sure what the benefit is but I am returning the connect module that I purchased because of this.

Connection inconsistency. Seems great but the connection between water rower and my iPad are inconsistent at best. Need to forget and reconnect Bluetooth often.

Basic row log. Easy to use. Doesn’t send data to Apple Health app which was the reason I upgraded to the Bluetooth adapter.

Doesn’t Work. The app stops my workout while I’m still rowing. It doesn’t record most of the information.

Needs a lot of work, especially Apple Watch connectivity. WaterRower: thanks for making an app replacement for the antiquated, non-backlit built-in performance monitor. But I hope you’ll consider adding: - Apple Watch and Activity app integration - font size customization - workouts, any simple text prompts will do - user interface profiles that remember my settings.

Doesn’t work. I’ve been searching for something to connect my S4COMMS 75 to my Strava account and this looked promising. Unfortunately it crashes upon opening, so nothing to see here.

Still upset with the removal of the widget. I used the widget extensively. Not having it is impacting my motivation and the visibility to my workouts.

Useless. This app is completely useless. I just use the CITYROW go to track my progress. I’m glad to change my review if it’s improved.

Please Develop. Had been waiting for my WaterRower to step into the 21st century for awhile, and was excited by the addition of bluetooth. Unfortunately, the companion app is lagging in features. At this point I feel like all the addition of bluetooth to my Waterrower did was allow me to sign up for over-priced virtual rowing classes at CityRow that I don’t need since I can already design my own workouts. Sigh... Update (1/23/21): Added intervals and now you can save them for the future (cool), but all you can do is set the interval time or distance, but not a target stroke rate, speed, or power for that interval? Does not seem like much to ask to have stroke rate or speed added as basic interval goals. No direct bluetooth heart rate monitor connection? Really? Workout history doesn’t allow you to delete workouts if you want, or arrange/sort them in any way. That seems like a no-brainer feature.

Latest update broke the app for me. No longer will display or measure distance. Will work for maybe 50-100 meters and then just freeze. All other counters continue working but distance no longer works since update. Tried multiple times.

Connect to comma unit. Would like to see connect to the comma unit w/o having to reconnect

Terrible app. Water rower should be ashamed. Terrible interface and very limited functionality. I tried it with new Bluetooth add-on and am sending the add-on back and deleting app.

Terrible App from the 90s. Total waste of time

Won’t take my login. Which works on my phone but won’t on my tablet - the thing with the screen you can see during a workout

Needs more. Would like to see more features added. Needs to be able to program a workout. Not really beneficial if the monitor does more than the app, and the app needs a $60 Bluetooth adapter to work.

Keeps Crashing.. 😩

Strava connect does not work.. Attempting to connect Strava produces this error: {"message":"Bad Request","errors":[{"resource":"Application","field":"redirect_uri","code":"invalid"}]}

Half baked idea. Was working until recently... now the app freezes on the banner page, will not open. WR support says the app requires OS 14 as a minimum, the app store says OS 11... half baked app, poor tech support.

Won’t even connect. Just installed the blue tooth module. The app won’t connect.

Heart rate Display. These size and visibility of heart rate display needs to be larger for us older folks
