The Boston Globe ePaper Reviews

  • John Henry -Help!

The Globe will go out of business if this e-paper represents it's future. It is expensive and unreliable-crashes daily-will not open-when previously downloaded will not reopen-rebooting (more than once) may yield today's paper. But, this disaster begins again tomorrow.
  • Horrible, just horrible

    By TruroRider
Takes an eternity to load. Tapping the screen no longer brings up an individual article. I've tried reinstalling to no avail. Doesn't matter which device I use: the problem is with the app. New York Times is great. Washington Post is great. Boston Globe has an app befitting a provincial, third-rate city paper. Why?
  • It just doesn't work

    By HoytAxtonTrio
I really don't care about features. I just want to read the paper in a straightforward manner. I could with the old app. I can't with the new app. It freezes and crashes constantly. When it does work, it's user unfriendly. I can deal with extra steps to get to reading it, but when I'm reading it please don't make me do anything more than swipe to get to the next page. In the previous version I could resize the viewing area and move around the entire page without having to resize it again. Now it resizes to only what's viewable and then I have to shrink it again then move around the page then resize it. And you guys thought that was an improvement????? Also have to do the same thing when I want to swipe to the next page. In the previous version even if I'd resized it I could swipe to the next page no problem. Now I have to shrink it before I can swipe to the next page. You may have added fancy features, but the basic ability to read the paper seamlessly has been severely compromised. Please fix. Thanks.
  • The Globe makes it worse again

    By Puggledad
4/16 update. It's still an awful app! Has crashed 5 times already this morning. It's been months and the app is still a piece of crap. It crashes constantly and the digital editor at the Globe obviously doesn't care. What else does he have to do but ensure that the content gets delivered? The new app is a bigger pos than one would believe possible from an institution as big as the Globe. It won't load, is clunky to use, ugly, and totally worse than the previous one which worked fine. Why the Globe changes things that work for things that don't demonstrates a stunningly dysfunctional and incompetent bunch of managers. The Boston Herald app works perfectly. The Globe should call them for advice. Dec 12,2016 The app is still terrible. An amateurish, cheap, throwaway piece of software that the management obviously could give a crap about. Absolutely frustrating and pathetic. PS. "Thunder" who wrote a tribute review for this app must be the father of the 8th grader who wrote the software.
  • Not Befitting a Great Newspaper

    By bishopje878
Recently subscribed to the digital edition of the Globe and use an iPad or iPhone as primary interface. The App is poor, unbefitting of an otherwise great newspaper. Downloading requires hitting "download" several times; and after you get through that, it takes a couple of minutes to download, even with a strong internet connection (NY Times, in contrast, takes a few seconds). After downloading, one sees a miniature version of the print edition and has to click on tiny articles to expand/read them. This interface is archaic, and in stark contrast to the way almost all other news apps present information (again, the NY Times makes it easy to navigate and read articles). Even when I bite the bullet and swipe through articles (vs. pages of the paper), the same article frequently appears several times (must be a glitch in a buggy App). I've complained about all this several times to the Globe, but there didn't appear to be much concern. The low user ratings here however should be sending a clear message they can't (or shouldn't) ignore. Apr 2017: Cancelled subscription and re-subscribed after 9 months after the subscription department told me their iPhone app had been updated. I took that to mean overhauled and fixed, which it decidedly is not.

Hard to believe it's as bad as it is...
  • Worst app

Worst app I've ever used. New editions are often not available. Terrible customer experience. And I pay for this subscription...why???
  • App won't launch

    By On iPhone 6
I reinstalled the app because it wouldn't show the current edition. The app now won't launch because it says there is no internet connection. There IS an internet connection.
  • Doesn't work

Buggy, crashes, won't download content properly, and 95% of the time doesn't work at all.
  • Very buggy app

The current version of this app is actually worse than it was a year ago. The ePaper can be loaded from the web page but when the app is loaded fails, claiming incorrectly that there is no internet connection. In the past when this error occurred you could press OK and it would proceed to open the page. Now it just bombs out. I've deleted and reloaded the app which used to get around various cashing errors and the like. Now, no such luck.
  • Worst reading app ever

Hangs. Does not download the content. The Globe and the individual responsible there should be ashamed of himself.
  • I didn't think it was possible, but you made it worse

    By Élan user
Is there anyone there who has a clue? Now I'm getting programmer messages about view editors being available. I can't get it to open no matter how many times I close it and reopen it. The maneuverability is even worse than before. After a page is zoomed, even slightly, you can't move around the page without "unzooming". It always takes several efforts to get it to download but today I can't get it to work at all. Please, please, hire one competent person. This is truly the worst app ever.
