Better Than Duolingo. I’ve been interested in learning Japanese for awhile now, so I had downloaded Duolingo to learn since it’s free. However, I wasn’t really grasping much from the lessons and after only a day of using it, Duo wanted me to start learning Katakana, even though I JUST started learning Hiragana. In the end, I just kept on redoing the same lessons over and over again to try to learn Hiragana so I could move on, but it really didn’t help much and I couldn’t seem to learn any of the characters. Out of curiosity, I started looking for other free Japanese apps and I stumbled upon this one and decided to give it a try. When I did the first Hiragana lesson, I found that it actually focused on just the characters so I could memorize them. That was just what I needed! I paid for the app after the first lesson because of how good it was and I was not disappointed. Because this app takes the time to help you learn each Hiragana character, I can now read Hiragana so much better than when I was using Duolingo, and the characters are sticking with me. I would recommend this app to anyone who wants to learn how to read Japanese, not just speak it (you can probably use Duo if you only want to learn how to speak Japanese). This app has been really helpful so far, and I definitely recommend at least trying to free lesson. I haven’t had any problems with it yet and overall, it’s a great app for learning Japanese.

Should have more options. I have been studying Japanese for a while, and decided to download another app. This is really helpful for learning how characters are written. However, I already know all hiragana and katakana. I think you should be able to choose your current level of how far you’ve gotten of learning Japanese. For instance, you could have “Level 1” as not knowing any Japanese, so you have everything to learn. Level 2 could be when you know Hiragana and Katakana. Level 3 could be when you know basic phrases/structures. If you already know kana, you could select a level 2 so you don’t have to practice kana, because you’ve already learned them with something else. I would love it if you could take this into consideration!

Would seriously recommend. As the title says, I recommend downloading this app. The one feature I like about this app is the ability to test you on how you write your hiragana and katakana. It is a very useful feature that can help in learning Japanese especially when stroke is a major importance when learning Japanese. I don’t see this feature often in an app, so that is a plus. The one issue that I have with this app so far is that I had a problem writing あ a couple times even though I was sure to have wrote it correctly. It is only that character that I am having problems writing. Other than that, good app, and I hope to see more added to this app. The upgrade is worth it.

Liking it very much so far!!. I just finished the 4th lesson and I’m loving this app! There just something about the order in which it teaches you that flows really well. I also like how simple the interface is. Only criticism so far is that the review feature glitches. For example: if I review one section, then review for the other sections disappears and I have to wait for it to come back. If the creators read this, I would love it if you added new lessons in the future like plain forms and more grammar rules to complement your kanji vocab app. Also, if you made a Korean version like this in addition to the Hangul app I would buy it immediately. Thanks for the great app I’ve truly learned so well with it!

Best app for learning or reviewing Japanese. I studied Japanese in college about 25 years ago and am trying to relearn it now. I've downloaded lots of apps and this one is by far the best I've found. I paid for the upgrade, and it was so worth the money. I've been able to review the kana and grammar, plus learn some more kanji along the way. It's made me realize that I remember more than I thought I did, in addition to building a stronger foundation for further study. I highly recommend this app for those who want to refresh their knowledge (since I already knew some Japanese, I can't speak to how well it would, work for a complete beginner, but for my purposes it's perfect.) if it only had stroke order & the ability to practice writing it would be perfect!

Fantastic & Simple. This is one of the few games/apps I’ve ever paid for outright on the App Store almost immediately. It’s very simple and streamline but actually helps me *learn*. The Genki apps are worthless in comparison. I can easily recall in apps like Duolingo but making me pull from memory without multiple choice is something entirely different. AND it teaches hiragana/katakana with stroke order. That was a game changer for me. It’s entirely worth the few dollars to go ahead and purchase without a doubt. Great for quick practice. I just started into “basics” on this app as I was just using it to memorize kana but I’ll definitely continue through the lessons as a review and supplement to my other learning material. (I use Genki I & Japanese from Zero as well as KawaiiNihongo for my main sources btw)

Perfect. Downloaded a few apps and played around until I was hit with a paywall and did not feel enough of an impression to pay for them. When I started using this one, its simplicity and fast pace actually really helped. I really enjoyed using the first lesson up to the paywall, and ran through it again before I decided this app is worth the $7 payment. Its simplicity just feels so clean and the lessons are very fun to do. Im actually taking away alot more than I thought I would. Anyone considering learning to read and write japanese, I fully recommend this app! The repetition is actually a serious help as I can breeze through a bunch of lessons because I taught myself to memorize characters and sounds from writing and hearing them over and over again. Im only about halfway through hirigana, but I feel as though it has already been money well spent. It will even tell you what you need to review from precious lessons to get better at the lesson you are currently on. Fantastic app!

Connect this language more deeply with your mind. I have wanted to learn Japanese for some time. Free apps like Duo__ (you know that one) are pretty great, but incomplete for Japanese in one particular and significant way, at least for how I discovered I need to learn. Although I added the appropriate language keyboard so I could immerse myself more, I still didn't feel like I was connecting the sounds with the the characters, and more importantly, I didn't quite feel like it was connecting with me yet. I need to learn how to write them in my own hand, to feel the language too. This app does just that, and I've only done Katagana lesson 1. I will be buying the full suite of lessons, though! The only feedback I have, which is why it's 4 stars and not 5, is that I would love the option to practice just one syllable/character over and over. (I'm having tremendous trouble with mastering あ for some reason.) That aside, this app is exactly what I was hoping it would be!

Love this app. Right now I'm trying to self-teach myself Japanese and of all the ones I've downloaded from the store that's free this is one of the best and most helpful! It allows me to review and highlights which ones I need to go over again. It also quizzes me in a matching card like format where when I do get a hiragana incorrect then it makes me review it until I get them right. It still highlights what I struggled with. There's also a cool feature where it pronounces it for me. This app is very user-friendly! I hope anyone that wants to refresh or learn Japanese basics (katakana, hiragana and more) to use this app. I wish I could give it more than just 5 stars.

Excellent App. I was skeptical at first to pay the $9 to use this app. But it is significantly better than other apps that are for learning. It is very worth it to spend the money to get all of the lessons. DO NOT BUY JUST ONE LEVEL. There are around 260 lessons it will cost you over $500 to purchase them all one-by-one so for the sake of your wallet, buy them at all at once. For the developer: It would be nice if you could add a setting that reduces the hints you get. (Maybe like 1-5 failed attempts before hint). It always annoyed me when I got a stroke wrong, and I’m just there like “…” Like I know it’s wrong but I don’t want the hint to tell me it’s wrong. Just add a way to limit when you get hints. Also, it would be nice if there was a setting to remove furigana except when it’s necessary (for example 何 distinction. These settings don’t hinder that app in any way, but more freedom would be nice. TLDR: Good app, worth purchase.

Great Introduction to Japanese. I am overall extremely happy with this app. The layout is very user-friendly and encouraging, and the pacing is nice as it gives you full and rather useful sentences early on. That being said, this is not a course that will get you to be sufficient by any means, and I would use it just as a starting point for people who want to seriously study the language. I already know hiragana and katakana, so I skipped over those lessons, but I don’t think they would take long for people who are starting from scratch. I plan to finish parts 3-6 by the end of the month, and then I will start Genki I and the rest of that series. I have no doubt that the knowledge I gained from this app will help me understand Genki and get through it more quickly. Thanks to the developer of this app! You really hit it out of the park.

An awesome study tool!. This app was an amazing find and I was happy to pay the 9 bucks for unlimited access to great amount of study material brought practically to me, that’s the difference between learning through this app and learning by yourself online, especially if you have a stylus to draw with. I did unfortunately find an issue though, a bug, that only happened once I got to lesson 11 in Hiragana. I write the syllable “pa” correctly but it makes me do it about 2 extra times before it crashes the app. Not sure why this is happening, I made sure to draw the symbol perfectly but it still crashes and wont let me get past “pa”, because the app closes by itself. I’ve tried restarting the IPad but didn’t fix the issue. I hope this is addressed soon, I found this app today and became a fan immediately. I don’t think it’s big deal, at least not for the syllables starting with ‘p’, but if it keeps happening in other lessons it can definitely be an issue. Great job, Mr. Developer, super great app, straightforward, looks pleasing and covers a wide range of extremely important subjects for the price to pay. Thank you so much for making my Japanese journey easier and more fun! -Lucas :)

App overview!. I enjoy using this app! I am beginning to teach myself Japanese and I’m starting off with Hiragana first. I love how it’s broken down into Hiragana-and has lessons with using Hiragana. Also, with Katana it has the lessons to go along with each specific part! I also use this with my daughter so she can listen and follow along as well!!! This has helped me so much and I will be purchasing the full bundle in order to have access to everything within the app! I need to invest in getting some hiragana and katana writing practice sheets to work on my writing (currently using two notebooks) one for vocabulary and grammar! I would recommend anyone to get this app and see if you like it! It’s great for beginners in addition to the other Japanese learning apps that I have I’m learning at a very fast rate with the hiragana so far! Love, love, love it!!!

Duo not doing it for you? TRY THIS. I’m just starting off learning Japanese. I’m bored at home and have always wanted to be trilingual. Usually, I hear good thing a about you-know-what owl app… that wasn’t doing it for me… all I remembered was the sounds and not how to write hiragana or katakana. If you enjoy a good mental challenge, this is the app for you. I can not stress this enough… this app helped me learn them super quick through repetition and forcing my mind to memorize them in a fun way. I’m barely a novice at japanese but I can confidently say that this is the best app to learn Japanese by far… I started off with the free level to learn hiragana… and the characters stuck… I finally was able to remember them, so I didn’t mind spending $7 for the chance to learn a skill that will pay off in the future through new friends or business opportunities. I would definitely recommend this app to anyone looking to g eat into learning Japanese, whether it be for travel, business, or for being able to understand text.

すごい!. Tbh, this is the best app I've found for learning Japanese, and although you have to pay a bit to learn everything the app has to offer, it's completely worth it. Also I think that the way that it teaches you is awesome! I looked ahead through the last chapters and saw that it had the hiragana you learned at the beginning then gave the meaning of the word the characters created, and had the kanji underneath. And if you've heard of other things to learn Japanese like a website called lingualift (which costs $15), I think that this half price app is the same quality or better, and although this is just my opinion and you may not agree, you should still get the app and try the free version and see for yourself! I didn't check, but if this company doesn't have any other language learning apps, I would love to see them make some!

Great app, but lots of bugs.... EDIT: The developer released an update today! I haven’t tested it yet, but I’m upping this review to 4 stars (original review was 3 stars) because I appreciate the developer’s responsiveness. I’ll bump up to 5 if I notice things have improved Original: I’m halfway through the hiragana lessons, and I’m liking this app so far, esp the writing part. However, even during my short use, the app has crashed several times, and there have been many bugs. Scrolling sometimes doesn’t work, the “review past due” button disappears, even when there are things to review, and the multiple choice sometimes bugs out and repeats the same question but with the wrong answers hidden... These are annoying, but the content is so good, so 3 stars

Truly a Golden Experience 🥶. This app is pretty nice, and the one-time purchase for All Lessons is a pretty good deal with a discount. I started learning Japanese just a month ago, using some flashcards and a paper and pencil to memorize the characters. I figured that it was taking too long for me to memorize all of them manually, and I kept losing motivation. So, I decided to download an app on my phone to help me learn Japanese. I mean, I'm always on my phone, as a teenager. I finally have an app that actually contributes to my knowledge. This is a great app to download if you want to learn Japanese, and it's not that expensive either, compared to hiring a teacher to teach you. I'm look forward to learning Japanese! ( ◠‿◠ )

Ok desu!. It’s GREAT if you need to refresh your learning and for beginners. At first I thought it was too easy since I only needed to refresh what I already know but I continued through and ended up buying the full lesson. Mind you, I’ve tried countless apps but they just miss the mark because if you feel like you have some of your katakanas as and hiraganas down, then you need to head the pronounciation more often and you need to learn the correct way of writing it. I ended up ordering a $10 pen for my phone so that I can practice my writing better. I also skipped a couple of levels to check out how it teaches you writing and so far, I liked how I taught kanji. It shows you reading it first before you memorize how to write it which I believe is essential because you need to become familiarized with kanji first before you can try to remember how to write it.

can't recommend enough. This is my favourite app for learning Japanese, and I have been downloading and trying so many by now that I feel like my perspective is valid. At the time that I found this app, I already knew hiragana and katakana, so I was mostly drawn to the grammar portion of this app. I especially am loving the way it uses kanji only when introducing words (in my case, I know how to say these vocabulary words but may or may not have learned the kanji or how to conjugate the verbs/use them in a sentence) and it is really helping me understand. I like the way the wordbank grows throughout the "levels" so that you actually have to know which kanji are what, even though the lines they fit onto may give you a little hint, I'm finding this still very useful. This app will help you familiarize yourself with kanji, and help you understand the grammar/sentence structure of the language. I'm liking it so much I just had to leave a review. Hope this helped!

Please read!. I absolutely love how this app teaches Japanese how many lessons there are. My only problem is that I can’t even do the Ka group of Hiragana because you have to pay for any lessons after the first one. This doesn’t make any sense because the you can do the first group of every lesson but none after that. If you are trying to learn Japanese from the beginning (like me) you have no choice but to pay for any lesson past vowels. I think that it would make more sense if you could do all of Hiragana without payment, and then have to pay for the lessons. This would make it so that people would more have time spent on the app to decide whether or not they want to pay, and not have to ask themselves, “Should I pay for this and end throwing away my money because I don’t actually like the app since I didn’t have the choice to explore it first?” Please change the payment time. I would absolutely love this app and use it all the time if you did. But, until then, I’m deleting this app because I’m a student who can’t afford to possibly waste money.

So excited to learn Japanese. I have a preference for learning large material. I have to associate things in order to retain information for my short term memory. The difference between this app and other popular apps for me is how they grouped lessons. I hate apps that just says “lesson one learning phrases” then they add a sprinkle of hiragana and other elements I am ignorant to and then I have no way to retain it. I have had a popular app for 2 years and haven’t learned a single thing from it. With this app, 2 weeks in I already have all hiragana characters memorized and can actually read words at a decent pace. I also would like to say, when I had an issue with a lesson that didn’t differentiate 2 alphabets (they are spelled the same in English alphabet) they immediately fixed the problem after one simple email and let me know that it was updated. Overall, with the combination of a great product and awesome customer service I am so happy with my purchase. This is exactly what I needed.

App is great but writing lessons are too sensitive. I found this app and my learning is going great. But I find when you do the writing lessons that it is far too sensitive. You will get false negatives (told you wrote it wrong when you didn’t). This normally isn’t an issue but the app keeps track of how well you are learning and will pop up reviews for you to do on things you are struggling on. It would be really nice if the sensitivity turned down and margin of error turned up a little. I also sent this in as feed back in the app. Other than that, purchasing this app in full is worth while considering the expensive alternatives out there.

Very helpful. Without this app I might have given up. Learning the hiragana and katakana is very fun. If you want to learn Japanese and have money to spend then this is the app for you. It helps me memorize a lot. However, while tracing some symbols, it identifies it as written the wrong way when I followed the lines the exact way it’s supposed to go. Just before writing this review I was learning the n set and I was on this one に and almost every time I trace it it thinks it is wrong. It’s very frustrating which drove me to leave this review. Developer, if you’re reading this please fix it because now every time I write a symbol without the guide I hesitate and I’m being careful which I don’t think is your intention. But thank you for making this app it helped a lot.

Some things are worth paying for. This app is one of them. There is such of wealth of material in this app, and the way it is presented — testing the user’s mastery of a given item in gradual degrees of difficulty, randomly presenting different facets of material in the same flow to maximize your mental engagement. So much thought and care went into the design and implementation of this app, I feel like it would be worth 10 times the price. I am so grateful to be able to access all of this for the price of a Starbucks drink. If you are trying to learn Japanese, especially if you want to learn the kana (haven’t gotten to the more advanced material yet), don’t hesitate. This is a worthwhile investment.

Spectacular and all but.... I absolutely love this app! I totally recommend this app if your wanting to learn Japanese. It shows you how to write the letters and you vowels. One thing I really love is that you can go back to your lesson that you were learning, even though you did great you can redo it and do even greater. It’s definitely earns a 5/5 star rating. The app is not complicated to use its nice and simple. The makers of this app did a great job. I believe any age limit can use this it’s for young to old. I have no complaints, I’m 12 and I have been learning Japanese and plan on learning much more! I love this app it gave me a new experience in the Japanese world! The problem that I don’t like is that you have to pay for the rest of the lessons. If your making an app to teach people Japanese then let all of the lessons be for free. Not everyone one wants to pay for a tutor or online classes. I have really liked the app so far. The problem is that I’m going to have to delete the app because I will have to pay for lessons. Other wise the app is nice.

Perfect app for learning how to write Japanese!. I started learning Japanese with Duolingo, and they though they have a separate section for learning characters, the app pushed me into writing the characters without any hints way too quickly! Plus there was no way to study JUST writing. First off, I LOVE THAT THIS APP IS A ONE TIME PAYMENT!! Personally I’m wayy more likely to invest in an app if there is no subscription, and I hold a vehement hatred toward all subscription services outside of tv/internet, especially for apps!! Second, I’m only on the second lesson so far but I went ahead and paid for all of the lessons! This app is really helping me with memorization and actually explains things that Duolingo did not (like how characters look different when typed vs written, I had no idea and Duolingo didn’t explain it to me when having me write). I very rarely write reviews for apps (I can’t remember the last time I did), but I really believe this app is worth the money!! Thank you developer and I hope your hard work is paying off!

Great learning repetitions. So far this is not necessarily an amazing very first step in learning Japanese but it is GREAT for hammering character memorization once you have been properly introduced to the characters. As others have mentioned, the font used is very fancy hand written characters which I actually find useful for real life application as well...just not for total newbies. The easy to use and effective "flash card multiple choice" type questions are the best tool I have been able to find, which is why I sprung the $7.99 for this, but I'm only willing to do so to fast-track my learning as much as possible. Overall quite satisfied so far, I'll update if that changes after Hiragana lessons are done!

Awesome app! I have a suggestion. I love this app. It goes into basic baby steps to teach Japanese, or you can skip the easy steps if you already know them. I love how it teaches you memorization by actually writing the symbols and matching them to the words they correspond. I’d like to make a suggestion though, when returning to steps already completed, I’d love it if it could start with asking you to draw the symbols rather than teach you them from the start and then teaching them again if you fail. This way, when we return to review, we can test ourselves in these specific areas without having to learn everything all over again.

only one lesson is free.... i don’t want to be “that person” but this is ana amazing app and that makes you pay for every lesson after vowels. i really liked it and the way it’s set up lets you trace, match characters to letters, match letters to characters, and try on your own. you can also redo the lesson if you need. i was really learning and doing good and about to move on but to move to the next lesson i would need to pay. it made me upset because i am not in a position to be paying the app and i realize they need money but i was really hopeful for this app and out of 6 apps this was the most helpful. i don’t want to give a bad review for money issues but at the same time i might have to delete the app and i wouldn’t recommend even downloading unless you are willing to pay for it because there isn’t any option to keep learning unless you pay. i really wish i could give 5 stars because from what i see it’s an amazing app and well developed and extremely helpful for learning japanese but the least you could do is say like- a couple lessons a day instead of unlimited unless you pay. instead one lesson and you have to pay from then out. i really hope my review is taken into consideration and i can learn because as i’ve said it’s an amazing app and i don’t see anything wrong with it. you can go back and redo lessons if you forget and the design for learning is amazing. please make this affordable for those who can’t pay and i would gladly change my review but until then...

Must-Have App for Beginner 日本語. I don’t care to write reviews often or purchase apps for that matter, but after the ‘Japanese!’ app was integral to my learning of ひらがな and カタカナ, I had to share my thoughts. The app has definitely come a long way, even since I started almost two years ago. They’re have been a plethora of features added to better it. The simplicity and ease as well as the learning method similar to Anki/flashcards has always made me come back to brush up. Stroke order and dakuten are simulated for correct teaching. If any issues or bugs come about, the dev is quick to make changes and is always open to feedback. This is a must-have app for any beginner!

Best Japanese Learner App Yet!!!. I’ve been using this app for the last 2 weeks and I feel great! I’ve been wanting to learn Japanese for quite sometime now and I’m so happy with this app among the countless other ones. I purchased the entire app, only $9.00-talk about a bargain, and I’m so happy with it. Friendly user interface, easy to follow steps, and overall nice setup. 😁🥳🇯🇵 Con: The only thing I don’t like is when you’re given a blank pad as you test your skills it shows you the faded character if you start at a certain point instantly, a bit annoying when you attempt to write the character from memory…but not all the time at least. 🙃

Hard time for Original Downloaders. I love this app so much, but am really frustrated that I can’t access the new levels that have come out since I downloaded it over a year ago without deleting it, redownloading it, and repaying for it. As I originally bought it for $6, I would be really happy if I could update it with the new content and pay the $3 that would make me even with the $8.99 anyone who’s bought the app today has paid. But, that isn’t an option, which means to access the content on top of the same content I already paid $6 for, I’ll need to pay a total of $15. I emailed the support listed on other reviews but haven’t heard back from them and it’s been a week so I deemed it time to write my review as they aren’t responding to discuss my situation.

10 stars. I memorized hiragana and katakana only by sight using other tools, and moved on to kanji. I used the "Kanji!" app to learn my first 100 kanji (I can draw them all by memory and recognize them well). However it dawned on me I couldn't even draw hiragana/katakana by memory lol, even though I could recognize them all. I tried 10 apps before I found this one, which is made by the same developers as "Kanji!". I'm blowing through the characters, I'm excited to see what else this app has to offer, I gave myself a preview of the lessons down the list and purchased them all immediately. If you love this app go download "Kanji!". It's the same thing but with N5-N1 kanji.

Excellent app, but finicky registration. Right off the bat, if you are learning hiragana and katakana I would recommend getting this app. Put simply, it is very effective in teaching you the characters as well as breaking them up into manageable chunks. My main issue with the app is that for some reason it will mark your writing as wrong even if you are near perfect on the tracing. This consistently happens for me on characters つ, づ, and む. I genuinely can’t figure out what I am doing wrong and it’s honestly pretty aggravating. The other odd thing is that compared to the fore mentioned there seems to a large window for your marks to be off, but still get the answer correct. This actually really nice when you’re first starting out as it gives you room refine your mark making as you continue to study. It’s definitely a worthy study app and one that is worth the small price. Highly recommend.

Huge Benefit. The Japanese! App was the first step I took in the process of learning Japanese. Though I am still new to learning Japanese this app has helped me greatly. Not only does it teach you to read hiragana and katakana it also teaches you how to write the individual characters, a great step when first learning. Plus also, there are other sections to learn in like vocabulary. Not only is it a great learning device, but it is also easy to use. You do not need any tech skills in order to use the app or understand it. I have never once received an ad on the app, it purely helps me focus on the language and learn. Please consider Japanese! as your starting point in Japanese or as a great practice device for further along Japanese learners.

I really love this app!. I’m not one to rate apps but I can’t help it this app has been so helpful👍🏼I’ve been trying to get into Japanese for almost two years and started to look into it again this year then I came across this app. While I had to pay for the rest of the lessons it’s totally worth it. For something so basic as sounding it out, tracing it with your finger, taking your time and fast/ easy review it really helps me out while I still use other apps to boost my learning process for the first time I feel like I’m actually learning the language! Writing everything down on paper is also helping me out as I learn ☺️

Great helper. I’ve been using this app for a few weeks and it’s pretty great! I’ve been using it every day and can already write most of the kana and say some basic phrases. The only gripe I have is with the writing. It’s mostly good, but a few letters are weirdly picky and don’t register as right even if you’re near perfect. It might not be so bad if it showed what it thinks you’re doing wrong. This can get really frustrating as some review tests won’t complete until you get it right on the first try. It’s only a few letters (よand ほ have been particularly bad). Most are reasonable and some are actually a little too lenient, counting my answer as right even when I write the wrong letter (I sometimes still mix up ひ and へ and it gives me credit) Still very much worth it!

Simply Amazing. I can't say enough how I think this is one of the best apps out there for learning Japanese. Get you engaged, knows your weak skills and helps to improve them. Definitely recommend! Edit* I love to give praises where it's due, but I don't want to give the developers reason to believe there is not room for improvement. So (1) Since it's already multiple choice, 3 of the choices should not remain the same when giving a new question. (2) I do think there should be a font change option, helps us to get familiar with different fonts as well as recognize differences between them. Hope they consider some of these changes!

Nice app but lacks features. This is a good app, don't get me wrong. I upgraded to the full version to get all the lessons because I like using it to review the things I already know. But that's about all you can do with this app is review. Like many other reviews have stated the fonts look a little too stylized. If I didn't already know what many of the characters look like, this would be really confusing. The lack of variety in multiple choice is also a little disappointing. And often, it will repeat the same questions over and over. The last thing that's pretty annoying is the lack of sensitivity on the multiple choice questions. Sometimes you have to press multiple times for the answer choice to properly register and sometimes when you press multiple times it'll move on to the next screen and the press will work, most likely selecting the wrong answer unintentionally. It would also be nice if you could practice writing the characters in this app. There's a similar one by this dev I believe that lets you practice writing the characters. Overall I think this is a good app but until some of the issues are fixed I can't say it's a great app.

Perfect App, genuinely. This app is exactly what I was hoping for. I meant to write a review many weeks ago, but I’m unsure if I ever submitted it. Using the app, over the last couple months, I’ve fully memorized all of Hiragana, Katakana, and I’ve moved through most of their additional lessons, which have been great. The interface is clean and simple. It works in landscape, unlike other apps. I recall being able to memorize something like 20 or 30 Hiragana on my very first use of the app. You have the ability to review test yourself at any point, and the tests are always different. The ability to constantly test my knowledge is important to me, because I’m a slower learner. The app price is modest, and inoffensive to me for what you get. I had previously downloaded many different apps, and tried other methods, but I was always searching for something like this. I am very happy with it. I bought it after about 2 minutes upon viewing how it worked. I’ve already bought their “Kanji” app for when I’m finished with this one too. Anyways, I recommend it and cheers to all the other Japanese language learners out there!

I don’t regret my purchase, but. I wish that the app wouldn’t mess up my SRL learning stuff by saying I got the “same character” wrong 3 times in a row, because it gave me a false “wrong” in the beginning of writing a character with 4 strokes. The writing section could use some improvement. Oftentimes I can chalk up a “bad wrong” to “oh, I was writing sloppily,” but I’ve found about 10% of the time, the app tells me my strokes are incorrect for a completely unknown reason. I say this can be fixed by making the writing section less sensitive, but that’s not very feasible considering it already gives some pretty interesting false positives. Maybe add a pop-up message that triggers when a user makes 2-3 mistakes in quick succession (less than 0.33 seconds apart) during writing sections that just says “Slow down, it’s saying you’re wrong because you’re off center/the line needs to curve/etc.” Sometimes the issue isn’t entirely obvious from the “start/end” green/red dots. Overall, to echo another user it’s better than Duolingo (which isn’t a very high bar to hit; duolingo is a scam), I feel like I am genuinely learning. The Kanji version of this app is also just as amazing. I’m excited to learn a new language with these!

Best app I ever unlocked the full version of. In duolingo it just has you remember the symbol by itself, this one does it in groups of like sounds, then the next lesson is with the same symbol but with the extra mark (like ki ke ka to gi ge ga).I highly suggest the writing part on because it helps immensely in memorizing them. If you click on the chart on the top it’ll show you what you need help memorizing with colors, like red is just learned, yellow you need work on and green means you got it down and it labels the lesson as “learned” so you can keep track of what you learned and need help with. I also appreciate that in some of the questions it’ll show the letters in classic calligraphy style so it teaches you what it looks like when written that way also. This app is perfect for learning Japanese 10/10 would recommend, the price is so worth it.

Super helpful with one issue. I've really enjoyed using this app, I even paid to upgrade it! Totally worth every penny, and I really like the order they introduce new characters. The one issue I have noticed, though, is that when I'm using the "Review All" feature, two of the options are always あ and き plus very often と. This takes all the challenge out of the process when the answer will always be the symbol that changed. I also wish that they would make the review feature longer, so that it would always include every character form every lesson you have completed. Right now it is just a hand full. Still an overall spectacular tool. I would absolutely recommend it and I hope that an update might come along to improve my one nitpick.

Amazing App!. There are a few lessons given for free so you can test the app out before you buy it. I bought the upgrade and I'm not disappointed. It teaches you hiragana and katakana then teaches you the basics of speech then onto verbs, questions, and then adjectives. It's super thorough and makes sure you have a good understanding before you proceed to the next lesson. But if you already know hiragana and katakana then you don't have to do that level. Someone was concerned because the characters are highly stylized. This is true but underneath the title of the lesson is the characters you're about to learn and they are written normally. If you are committed to it, this app will help you learn very fast! So if you want to learn the language this app is definitely worth the money.

Unexpectedly good learning app. The way the app uses a combination of repetition, writing, and pronunciation makes it relatively simple to learn and memorize grammar and words quickly. I managed to memorize hiragana and katakana in less than 2 weeks! Grant it, I was on the app pretty much everyday having a lot of fun with it, so practice still makes perfect. The only suggestions I have for improvement so far would be to have separate reviews for words and sentence structure. There are times I want to only review vocabulary, and other times only how to form sentences. However, the review sessions make you go through pretty much everything you went through before getting to any desired questions, which can be a drag at times. Otherwise, this is a fantastic app to get started learning Japanese!

Upgrade is 100% worth it!. I've been using Duolingo to study Japanese for 5 months or so and I've learned more with this app in a week than I have with duo for the whole time I've had it. Drawing the characters really helps me memorize them quickly and there's so much information to learn with this app. The character recognition when you draw them works about 90% of the time. I know it's important to draw strokes of characters in a certain order and if you don't do it in the right order it'll tell you it's wrong, which is super helpful because I know can't just draw whatever I want and get it right. Grind this for like 30 minutes a day and you'll be good with basic Japanese in no time.

Amazing Writing App. This is a very interactive app that presents lessons in a practical manner that make it possible to actually learn how to read and write Japanese characters. It has tracing at the beginning of each lesson which quickly evolves it to writing the character completely from memory. It is designed to work at the learners pace, so it’s neither too fast for beginners, nor is it boring for seasoned independent learners. The app also encourages frequent lesson reviews, which is key for long term success. As a kindergarten and Special Education teacher, I recommend a combination of stylus use as well as finger tracing. Young children are encouraged to trace letters with their fingers as this is key in teaching the subconscious how to RECOGNIZE letters. Use of a stylus will allow the brain to learn the BASIC MOTOR SKILL of writing the Japanese characters with a pen. Personally, I enjoy using an electronic format versus traditional pen and paper as the use of traditional workbooks either requires paper wasting copies or page tearing erasing. The app work space is always fresh and ready to use! I also noticed immediately that I hold the stylus more like a paintbrush than a pen, which I find ideal as Japanese is traditionally written with brush stokes. Great app and well worth the price.

Great App for Beginners!. I really enjoy this app. Paid for the full version and completely hooked! I spent hours learning and reviewing with this app. It is such a delight feature to have writing practices for hiragana and katakana. Is there room for improvement? Yes. It would be so much nicer if it offered more handwriting styles for hiragana. For example, there is the four-stroke ふ taught by most of the Japanese learning sites I’ve seen but the app only accepts three strokes. Also, it would be great if the app allows user to say “I don’t know” for the handwriting part with a blank screen. It happened to me a few times that I didn't know the answer so I drew random doodles and somehow got it “right” (it was not actually right - just match the pattern the app was expecting). Overall, it is more like a 4.5-star but I gave it a 5-star. Recommend this fun app to beginners!

Honestly, worth the money.. I am a college student and I have been trying to pick this language up for years. I have tried around 11 different apps and although some have helped me learn the alphabet, none of them stuck and I had to rely more on basic memorization than actual activity based learning. I have never bought any app. Never. And I have never made any in-app purchases. This is my only exception. I learned really quickly with the first lesson, and it felt effortless. It has writing, pronunciation, and reading all in one. I really enjoy this app. Made it quick to learn this language and without much effort. Truly worth the 8$ I paid for all the lessons.

Great app, important bugs. Overall, I love this app. I learned Japanese so quickly due to the convenience of having it on the phone. The tutorials are well informative however, there are a few bugs that are annoying and important to address. First, the writing feature is great however there are times where I mis written the word, but it counts it as correct. This is due to the fact that the app only accounts on the # of strokes that are being applied per word, which creates very inaccurate result. This can also affect words where you do get it correct, but marks it as wrong. Additionally, there were couple of times that the app crashed during mid session which results in me having to do the lesson again. Overall, it’s an amazing app and yields excellent results, but does have its problems along with it.

Best way I have found to learn Kanji. Great for flash card type learning. No subscription needed.

Great learning tool. Has been incredibly helpful as a supplementary tool for learning Japanese. Can be completed and practiced in short intervals through the day making it good for busy schedules or to make killing time more productive.

Brilliant. I've begun Japanese and I needed something that was quick and easy and can teach and quiz me, this app is perfect for that. I don't spend money on apps often, but I was very excited to press that purchase button and see all the new lessons open up to me. Wonderful job guys

Extremely Helpful. As an absolute beginner this app has helped me a lot to slowly start to understand written Japanese. While I haven't gotten very far yet I've found it has a well structured revision setup and I am feeling a lot more confident about my ability to learn Japanese. Over all it is a very good app and I will be recommending it to my friends.

J-F. The lessons are very useful for beginners, however I haven’t been able to use the app even one time without bugs interfering. Very frustrating!

Fantastic App. I’m studying Japanese for one year and still find this very useful for consolidation of learning. Would be nice if apps develop further levels. Thanks

I’m a truly beginner. I hope As I take on the stages of this App, I will be able to hold a conversation with a local Japanese and will be able to translate into English. Arigato! I am still in Hiragana stage 1.

Good so far. Good app so far. I just wish it had the little pictures that help picture the character. Like the picture of the thorn in the toe for TO and so on. They really help picture the characters better.

Very Good! No need for papers. I cannot say anything as it is a Good practice worksheet. I learned the hiragana and katakana basics in 3 days. My enthusiasm in learning Japanese boosted because of this app. I will not elaborate but just try it 🥰😎 Please make an app for reading hiragana and katakana stories with romaji and English translation !🙏

Finally something to help me remember particles!. This app approaches the language in the same order as formal learning. It makes a lot more sense than DuoLingo Japanese. It’s no frills, but just what I needed.

The simplest and best app. This and the partner kanji app are fantastic tools to learn Japanese. They provide a great foundation in Japanese language. If you work your way through the apps over a year or so you can then move on to learning and conversation one on one.

Brilliant. I am loving this app, starting with absolutely no knowledge of Japanese. I have completely mastered hiragana, Katakana. I never experience any bugs it works perfect for hours. I’ve learned heaps! I love this app

Subarashii!!. Just the kind of app I was looking for. Well suited for my needs. I work a lot and my studies get put on the back burner. This app is accessible, easy to use, helps me remember small chunks at once and there isn't much reading. Nice!

Perfect. Probably the best way to learn through multiple different exercises. Writing, reading and listening as well as a chance to practice cold turkey

Pretty good app. Very simple and usefully. It's good how you can decide how advanced you would like to get by purchasing more difficult levels (although some may view this as a negative).

Great app. This app has been great for helping learn basic Japanese. It has a good level of interaction and has regular tests that revisit the areas you need to focus on

BRILLIANT. This app taught me all the hiragana in a few days (with only 30 minutes practise per day)! It's amazing and works much faster than other methods I've tried in the past. I'm now moving onto kanji and I've learnt so much using this app! It does cost $12 but gosh, it's worth it. 10/10 would recommend

Love !!!. Hello I absolutely love this app. I learned to memorise hiragana and katakana confidently enough using this app that I started buying manga to practice!! I’m actually now using the same app to learn Hangul. Incredibly low one off payment for a truly worthwhile app. It’s brilliant I love it.

Perfect for beginners. A good grounding in the scripts and basic words and sentence structures of Japanese. With the bevy of language apps on the App Store this one has a minimal but smooth interface that prompts you to learn and review in a manner that you can handle at your own pace but certainly doesn’t lag when wanting to speed through to test yourself

Great app. It's really worth it if you're trying to learn Japanese. The lessons don't cost too much for what you get. I would recommend it.

Huge help. I’ve begun learning Japanese with the infamous Genki 1 & 2 books, adding this app to learn how to write the characters correctly and memorise them has helped incredibly, as well as helping with numbers, basic time and sentencing etc What would be awesome to include in an Anki style flip card review But overall, a massive help and highly recommended to beginners

Ripped off. Paid to unlock everything but lessons still locked

Actually better than expected. So I bought all the lessons.. I can't comment on how great it is yet entirely. But.. So far it's been pretty great, my Japanese Mrs says my Japanese is progressing much quicker, than it was prior!

Please read!!!. So... good things first, right? Well, it's a good app to learn hiragana and all, better with a device pen thing, and I learnt my vowels. But that was all I could do with the free version. Anyone really serious about learning to write Japanese would need premium and that's awesome, I look up to those willing to pay, but I was just trying to help a friend with her lessons and I will sadly need to find another app.

Awesome for beginning Japanese. Have been searching around for app to learn Japanese and this is the best one I've found. It teaches you how to write the characters correctly, instead of only reading all the time. I've found this extremely helpful for remembering the characters. You get a few free lessons, then pay to open up the rest, but it's inexpensive and I've found it's worth it. You can trial each section of learning before paying, so you know what you're getting when you open up the rest. Great app.

Not even giving me a chance. I love the game every one should get it but there is one thing that’s it’s not letting me do when I’m riting with out the trasing thing I’m trying to guess but it just comes and doesn’t even give me a chance please fix it and if you don’t I’m riting a nother report about how bad this game is fix it! 😡😡

Excellent App. Having recently begun learning Japanese, this app is ideal for me. After a few days of use, I can already form a variety of simple sentences. However, while this app does help with character recognition (through a multiple choice style interface), practical writing experience is essential for learning characters fully. I have just one suggestion: it would have been great if I could have purchased the different Howell Peebles apps (like "Kanji!") as a single bundle.

Bug. I'd love to buy all new lessons this app offers but when I click on "purchase all lessons" nothing happens. Edit: It worked finally.

Great but costs money. This is a great app for beginners but the thing is that it costs money to unlock the levels which is really annoying and I don’t want to spend money on it. Education is never free ;(

Great app. I have not learned Japanese before and after using this app I finding it a lot easier and fun to learn the basics. I recommend this app for anyone that is interested in learning Japanese for the first time.

Needs a manual review mode like the kanji app.. I bought all the lessons, and I’d have to say that the price is relatively cheap considering the fact that I’m able to learn the fundamental basics of Japanese. This app uses spaced repetition and active recall (the two most scientifically proven techniques of learning and memorising), which is a big plus for me because I was able to learn both hiragana and katakana in 2 weeks (on and off). I was able to communicate at an extremely novice level to my peers after completing level 3. However, I’d like to see a manual review mode, where I’m able to select what I want to review, similar to that of the kanji app. I can’t seem to rely on the app 100% of the time when it comes to the daily reviews. I'm certain that I have few holes in my understanding at levels 3 and 4, and I’d like to clarify my knowledge by manually picking what needs review. It’d be tiresome and demotivating to go through all the lessons again. I’m usually pretty on and off with Japanese, and since I was a complete beginner, I’d like to know where I’m at.

Great app. Great app overall for JSL people. Needs payment to have complete access but definitely worth the money.

Great app!. Great for revision and refreshing your memory and a great alternative to physical flash cards. App works great and I have only noticed a few bugs when working on stroke order using your finger to write the character but should be fixed in no time.

Perfect!. I love this app as it is the best app I have gotten so far! The prices are affordable and very easy to learn Japanese! I would definitely recommend this app to anyone who is interested in learning Japanese or if you are studying it. Great job!

The very best way to learn Hiragana. The intuitive hints, logic and drills built into this app are just great… I have made really good progress since starting and highly recommend this for all beginner students of Japanese.

It's good but not free. Good and easy to use. Will say that the free version has 3 levels... If you want all the hiragana levels it is $3 and if you the full thing it's $10

Good app, needs a fix. The concept is amazing, really helping with learning. I have learned and properly memorised the whole of hiragana in 3 days. However some of the characters, especially that for “mi” み, seem to never register even though it feels like I am doing everything correct. If changes where put in to fix this and other characters from doing this it would be a 5 star review from me. However this is a very critical flaw that prohibits efficiency in learning.

Simple and practical. I learned hiragana and katakana long ago, and this app has been a wonderful refresher course for me. It would also be great for a beginner. Simple, easy, and practical.

Roblox Is Better. Get Roblox. At least it’s online. This doesn’t really help hiragana. I give this -6 stars. Everyone seeing this should go do some Roblox 🤫

High quality. Only $3 to learn Hiragana I love it. An amazing app. I am travelling to Japan for a month and want to be able to read some things. Fun to learn and lets you draw the characters. I haven’t done the katakana or kanji yet and I’m sure they’re fabulous too.

So far so good!. So far so good. Only in the 4th chapter but enjoying it. Hopefully it gets to applicaiton standards later so as to be able to hold a simple conversation.

Great!. The app is great. However, when reviewing vowels for katakana, the character “i” was unable to be written (every time you try to write it, it resets. But amazing nonetheless!

Awesome app!!. I've progressed so quickly already and I'm still on level one! Best hiragana app I've used! Really recommend, it's super easy and very efficient! Also really fun :)

Great app for beginners!. I hope that with more people downloading this app, purchasing the additional lessons and leaving feed back the app will continue to improve :) ありがとう!

Perfect for beginners but.... As the title says, it’s a great app for beginners who just started to learn the Japanese language. It provides most of the necessary grammar and words to converse with your Japanese friends. It also serve as a good refresher for those who learned the language but did not practice it on a daily basis such as myself. In less than 2 weeks of finishing the lessons, I would say it reminded me about 60% of what I learned from my Japanese courses back in University. However, I also expected more from this app to be bug free and have more lessons. Specifically speaking, sometimes I notice the voice to say something unrelated to what I had correctly constructed my sentence (usually the sentence construction right after the example step). I also notice a few of the grammar to not have the correct choice of Japanese words to be picked up from to form the correct sentence. In terms of lessons, I was expecting there to be lessons on past affirmative and negative tenses to teach beginners how to say stuff like “I ate pie last Wednesday” or “I did not had apple last weekend” and so on. Also, to have lessons about thoughts like “I think that is a great idea” would also seem beneficial. Hopefully these changes would be fix in the next update with additional content with no extra charges.

DEFINITELY WORTH IT. Definitely worth for people want to practice Hiragana through writing. Motor skill retain our memory better than just verbally speak or read the words. Inexpensive investment for Japanese learner app.

Great but not perfect. I only picked up Japanese recently and this app has been a godsend, however for those wondering you have to pay for all the lessons (which is fair, the developers do need get something for their work) and the tracing mechanics need some work, I have drawn scribbles as an act of frustration and I got the character correct but in some cases a perfectly fine character will be incorrect for no apparent reason. These are rare I admit but it’s rather annoying when you’re studying.

Perfect!. Great app! Works well with my style of learning, and the best by far of several apps I tried. Would recommend people give it a try. Only issue has been trying to use the feedback in app. Would like to be able to reset each level. Tried all of them before purchasing, and after learning Hiragana and Katakana, I’ve forgotten all the stuff I did with level three several weeks ago! Am looking forward to trying the Kanji!! App. :)

Amazing. This app is amazing. I totally recommend it. I love how it reinforces your learning. It’s also not one of those apps were there is an add every time you tap your screen. In fact, There are no adds at all! The is cheap and is definitely worth the money. Overall this app is amazing, I love it. Totally recommend it!

Great app, just a few little bugs. This is a really effective app for learning Japanese. Just a couple of issues such as some of the hiragana writing practice can be super sensitive and not let you ‘pass’. For example trying to write ‘o’ or ‘me’ it never accepts my attempt even though I am super accurate. Also when translating sentences in the ‘verbs’ section sometimes it gives you a short sentence to translate which is fine, but then there are blank spaces for two sentences and lots of elements to choose from but no clue as to what the second sentence is that needs to be translated. With a bunch of trial and error you finally work it out. But a very effective app and well worth the $12.

I finally learned kana. I’d tried so many times but they’d never stay learnt for very long. The amount of quick practice with immediate correction I was able to do with this app is what finally FINALLY helped me. The grammar and vocab lessons are a good intro.

IPhone and iPad. Good for practicing. Gave only four stars because cannot transfert my account on both my devices

Great!. It’s a great complementary tool for learning Japanese. Well worth the price.

Great app but. Great app but i bought the next lesson a couple days ago and i still haven’t gotton it

Very good app!. This app is really good! I don’t know the extent of Japanese grammar this app covers but by the looks of it covers most of the important ones. And it covers them well. Good standalone or supplementary app for your Japanese studies!

It’s great. Even though I bought all the lessons by accident (due to the home button pay function), I honesty have no regrets. I really enjoy that I can use the app offline. The lesson are great.

Very nice. I love this app all in all cause it’s easy to use and understandable but there’s a small bug where when the voice says a sentence it says “taberu” instead. Thanks!

Great value. I’ve been trying to learn Japanese for a while and haven’t gotten very far. I keep getting the characters mixed up. For $11, you get a ton of lessons and review. I like the simple and clear grammar explanations, and how the app enforces using the correct strokes for each character when writing. I’m looking forward to using this app more!

Ok. Very helpful but you have to pay for to much of it

Love it. It does cost $11 for everything but I think it’s worth it. This app makes learning characters and grammar very easy compared to other apps I’ve tried. If you’re willing to spend a little cash this app is for you

No option to sync between two device. How can I sync progress between my iPhone and iPad?

Meh. It’s good except for the fact that you have to pay money. Can you make a free Version please.

It’s ok. I think the app would be great, but I don’t want to have to pay to get past the first stage. I feel like you shouldn’t have to pay in order to learn something, considering I’m only 14 I don’t have the money to pay for an app. I think it would be better just to learn from Japanese101.com

Love it. I have tried many methods to start learning Japanese and this app has been the best tool in my arsenal. It’s straightforward and easy to navigate. It’s great for reviewing at any time, and anywhere. They only critique I have is that sometimes when I’m drawing out a character I make a mistake, and I realize it but there’s no way to correct without the app just giving me the answer. I would love to be able to erase and begin again from time to time.

Good app to learn but... I really enjoyed doing the first lesson but i have to pay for another lesson. Yes, the company does have to make money in a way but I would have liked to have at least one more. Thankfully they didn’t use ads like other learning apps. Something I think would be nice to add is a place where you can select the background. Yes the background is cool but I just feel like it would add that ✨touch✨ Overall 4/5

Good, almost perfect. There are a few features they could add. I’ve sent a message to their team but never heard anything so I guess it’ll never improve. Maybe it’s better to invest money in an app that’s constantly being updated to reflect what users want

Wow !. Just wow ! I have just begin the learning of the Japanese, after have learn the english, and wow ! In 5 min, i have learn 4 letters in japanese and how to write it ! Yes is not amazing, but its a begin i think ! Thanks you so much !

I love it. It helped me learning the alphabet. This app totally worth it.

Its ok. It would be more helpful if I could learn more than like 8 characters of katakan and hiragana. I guess I can’t expect everything for free. I wish there was an ad version, tbh.

So far so good!. This application has allowed me to learn hiragana and katakana in a month. I probably could have learnt them in two weeks had I worked harder. I cannot rate levels 3-4 as I have not done those yet however I find that so far this app has been a massive help in learning japanese!

Great app. Great app, I’ve been using it daily. However after the latest update now I can’t open the app. It crashes before I can open. Please fix the bug as I need this app!

You need to pay. Only first 2 lessons of hiragana are free, ridiculous

'a' character block any progression. First lesson of hiragana ask to draw 'a' but don't let you draw more than 2 stroke before judging it is wrong

fails to update. iPhone 15.4.1 iOS

Really effective!. I’ve been using this app, along with Learn Kanji! to refresh my Japanese after many years of neglect. I like the breakdown of learning one row at a time. The review mode seems to be really good at picking up where I’m having trouble, and drilling me on those. I will occasionally go back through the lessons to drill a particular row, it would be nice if there were a way to drill a particular column at a time (a, ka, sa, etc…).

Hi this sounds good news for you guys because I actually like the game.. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Some improvements need to be made. Love the learning programs. It’s very very good. I dislike the translation program that comes with it simply because copying and pasting a message once translated is virtually impossible. I repeat that the learning program is very good though. It really helps to memorize and visualize.

good. I memorized stuff here easily

Look no further for learning Hiragana. 100% worth it. I’m able to learn and retain new characters so easily with the app’s simple and repetitive style of teaching. The graphics and design are also very visually pleasing and make it fun to use. 10/10 would recommend.

great app. only 11$ for all the lessons! totally worth it - includes hiragana, katakana, kanji, verbs, adjectives, etc. really helps you learn how to write and use the language with pronunciation :))

Love this app but there is a bug. I really enjoyed learning Kana from this app, I think writing characters really helps them stay in memory. However, I can’t open the app anymore - it crashes on launch… So I can’t access it at all. I hope the bug is fixed soon because I really miss this app and I’m a bit annoyed since I’ve paid for the full version

Great, with room for improvement.. I wish there was a way to practice certain characters without having to practice the whole set. I would love to see an update in which you could have a more precise writing examination with the ability to track improvement in form. All in all, great app for the price.

Satisfied. This app is affordable and worth every penny. I love the review and repetition of exercises. It’s brought me a long way with my Japanese

Highly recommend!. The app is really good for beginner learners. It’s very easy to use and I think it’s worth getting. I personally think the price is fair with the amount of learning experience you’re able to obtain.

Great App! ..but. Hey! This app is really awesome, I’ve been wanting to learn Japanese for some time now, and this app is great. But I do not know how to unlock the other lessons? do I just kinda continue with the levels? Do I have to pay to unlock the lessons?

A fresh way to learn. I tried learning Japanese on duolingo but they only teach you words like apple or brother but with this app I’m learning at a great pace. Although it has a few of ten dollars it is worth the knowledge you gain from the app, it breaks down the language into small lessons for me to learn and I’m never confused or frustrated at all

Très bonne app. Facile à utiliser, bon tutorat, plusieurs leçons. Organisé pour faciliter l’apprentissage!

Love this beautiful app UWU. This app is great

Great app. Great app to learn Japanese characters. I had a few difficulties with it at some times but the developers were kind enough to help me get through them. Would definitely recommend.

Decent app for learning to write. The actual app is decent, but the AppStore said it was free then I was charged $11

More languages?. It’s a pretty good app actually! Really good price too.. tho so you think you will eventually add more default languages such as French ? It would be very nice !!

Useful but can’t use between devices. I love this app and found it very useful! I love the ability to trace out the letters. I’ve been using this app on my iPad where I paid for the full version and wanted to use it on my phone as well. However I can’t access the next levels and are prompted to pay again. Is this a bug or is this by design?

Eh I don’t know. It was very helpful but I don’t understand. You learn the vowels then pay?! It’s just wrong in my opinion.(keep in mind I’m under the age of 12)

Very good. This is a good app but I just wanted to address that the stroke order for Ro in katakana seems a bit off

Great app!. Great for learning and shadowing the sounds. Another layer to be added to your studying. Effortlessly easy and fun.

Love it. This app is simple and great for beginners! Just add kanji!

Multi gadget is not supported - expensive. I bought the app but it is not that much worth it. Besides it is bought on my iPhone but on my iPad is not working. It is just not how it supposed to work.

It’s okay. I was writing the a on lesson one and I was doing it right and it gave me the hint while I was still writing it it doesn’t let me finish

:(. I am thrilled on how amazing this app is but I can’t pay and I am sad because we can’t get the full experience we were hoping if we’re not able to pay

Great. I don’t know why I gave this 4 star rating.. This app is great, I somehow managed to remember how to write the vowels in one day.

Clear and easy. I personally am starting to learn Japanese and needed an app that can teach me the basics and get me started on the road. This app was the perfect fit, it offered all of the kana, some kanji and basic words and phrases. My favorite part was the way it taught you everything from the pronunciation of every word and kana to even teaching you how to write each and every kana and then repeating what you learned to make sure you don’t forget. It also shows you the content to be reviewed every now and then to keep your learning in check. I would recommend purchasing all of the lessons because this app is worth the money.

Great App to learn Japanese, especially writing Kana. I just went on a Japanese app spree and tried a bunch of them. The big ones like Duolingo and Mirai Japanese are great, but I really like how organized and structured this app is. Also the other apps don’t really teach writing, and of the ones I tried I really like this apps writing recognition and gradual teaching progression. Simple, straightforward, no nonsense. And the best part of it all, is that it’s only 8 bucks for the full version which is definitely worth it. I really don’t like the subscription models for learning, it feels like everything needs a subscription these days and it’s a little crazy. Highly recommend this app. Honestly it’s pretty fantastic as a stand-alone but I feel Duolingo and Mirai give me a little more intuitive understanding whereas this app builds my writing skills, vocabulary and is a great reference for all the characters.

Good with one flaw. This app is definitely one of the better language apps I've used When you mess up it makes you repeat the same few words over and over and over to the point where you don't want to mess up because you don't want to spend an extra 3 minutes going over the same few words, which is great because it really makes you remember the ones you messed up on. The main issue is the font used. It makes it really difficult to recognize kanji when it's written normally in places like Twitter and on signs because the apps stylized font looks so much different I will say that it helps you better recognize stylized kanji on product packaging and in commercials and stuff like that though But I decided not to purchase the separate kanji course because of the font. If there was an option to change the font to a standard font then I would be more than happy to purchase the kanji course as well

Very helpful app. Just started using it about two weeks ago! Came over from the Duolingo Japanese course, because I was looking for a way to learn the Kanji + Kana and stroke methods first. Duolingo teaches you the characters, but the interface isn’t proprietary to Japanese, so they’re soo small and hard to see... This app presents a very portable and helpful way to learn the stroke order and characters simultaneously. I haven’t gotten to words or sentences yet, but I’ll leave another review once I’ve gotten that far ^_^ Thanks to the app creator, you’re awesome!

Worth the money!. I’ve been through a lot of apps. It is more important to review what we have learned to make sure it is retained in our memory. This app provides a better way to review once you have finished your lesson. The flash card type system is useful for learning and reviewing. Good color representation in charts to mark weak spots. One feature I feel it is missing is when writing a letter if there is unexpected key stroke by mistake, then there is no way to erase the key stroke. That letter is then marked as wrong and marked as weak spot. So if possible I recommend an erase button for the writing area.

Good but also not good enough. So when I tried, I was so excited, but I I listened what it says, but it made me start over again I got really mad so I was in and only one lesson is for free and I got angry so I tried can we get another chance by deleting it then getting it but still it is really advance. I like it that way, but it’s not for free. Only one lesson is so yeah. It’s like a five out of 10 because how it acts people say it’s better than duo but it only takes Japanese and duo does a lot of languages, even math and music I will just stick to Duolingo that’s just my opinion

I have an issue. This app is amazing let’s get that out of the way I’d highly recommend but I am having an issue. I memorized the whole hiragana and wanted to learn more so I purchased “all levels” but that only unlocked The Whole hiragana for me the other levels are still locked only the first and second (of some) are unlocked. I’d like this issues solved because in the description for “All levels” it said it’ll give access to every level 315 words, grammar, 25 katakana and it didn’t unlock any of them for me only unlocked the hiragana like I purchased just the hiragana but I didn’t.

Love the app for learning hiragana, have one suggestion. Love the app. Paid for the full version to learn how to write, identify, and pronounce hiragana and kanji on my iPad. My only suggestion is that, in the sections of the app where we learn to write Japanese characters, I would like if the grey square in which we trace the characters could have center lines superimposed on it. I ask because I am having a tough time memorizing the placement of the strokes of each character, and I feel that having these center lines will help a lot.

I paid, and it was worth it.. Before using this app, I knew zero about Japanese. I was drawn to the writing function because I learn better when I actually write the characters. I was a little skeptical about paying for the app ($7.99), but I did. I have been spending five hours a day on this app for about a month, and I feel very good about my grasp on grammar and the necessary vocabulary to pass the JLPT N5 exam. Learning a language takes dedication and repetition, and this app is an excellent tool for those with the determination to succeed.

Why I hate this app so much. I’m 11 years old and love to watch anime. Learning Japanese is just a passion that I have. When my mom found this app it looked ok. So I downloaded it. This is the first day by the way that I have this app and i already hate it. When I did the first lesson I was like, “okay”. But than after it was done I clicked on the next lesson and it said pay $8 a month for the next lesson!!! Am I supposed to pay a crappy app for lessons!!!! So I calmed down and got out and went to the second category of lessons and did that. And I was clueless to what the first lesson was about!!!! My god if you are going to have one good lesson open and the rest for money just make the app an amount of money and not just 8 dollars a month!!!! Deer creators thank you for waisting my time. Sincerely a hater. Pls fix this problem or no one will buy this app!!!!!!!

Frustrating and Lacking. I was surprised by how blah this app is. The reviews are glowing, but my experience was disappointing. I have two major complaints: (1) it uses multiple choice, which limits recall and retention. (2) it's kind of slow so if you tap an answer there is just enough of a delay that it's hard to know if it registered your tap. If you try to tap again it sometimes goes to the next screen and accepts that tap, which is usually on the wrong answer. Super frustrating. Really not worth the $7.99 to buy all lessons. Oof. I'm still smarting from dropping that kind of cash on a mediocre app. Eight bucks isn't much, but for an app that's a fortune and I'm really disappointed.

Worth the price, and more. The low reviews come from people who are mad that someone took the time to design a great app to learn a complicated language and wanted to be compensated for their work, like that's unreasonable? If you want something for nothing then try google and see how that works out for you. Now if you're SERIOUS about learning to read and write, this might not be your only tool but to me it's been the most essential for building a foundation. I also bought their Kanji app with no regrets!

Writing is the best way to learn hiragana and katakana. Many may find this app too boring since it does not have abundant course materials or interesting content (such as daily vocabulary, short conversation base on different scenarios), but as an Asian (who has been using ideogram for most of the time in my life), the writing feature of this app really helps me to memorize all the basic characters in a short time. This is something I tried but failed with other apps. Strongly recommended!

Best For Learning!!!. Let me start with saying that this app is definitely the best app for memorizing and learning Japanese, especially if you’ve never learned a symbol-based language before. The only reasons I took a star off were 1) I think there could be a bit better options for review like choosing multiple choice or just straight recall and 2) some of the lessons (like the “ga” group) don’t have the option of recall writing, which is the best way of retaining information. Again, THANK YOU for such an amazing app! I could not recommend it more for anyone trying to learn Japanese and that doesn’t know where to start.

Wonderful app and a suggestion to improve it (:. I’ve been searching for a good Japanese learning app for quite a while, and I finally found one. This app far exceeded my expectations, and I highly recommend it! If your planning on getting this app, remember to not push yourself too hard. You can do it! However, I think it would be much better if we could write the kanji/difficult words, but other than that, it’s great! Thank you so much to the app creator for this wonderful app (:

Have to pay after 1st lesson. The concept of this app is great, absolutely wonderful for learning hiragana and katakana, however I’m very disappointed because while I’m trying to learn Japanese I’m also very short on cash and just don’t have the funds to pay $8 for an app on my phone. Basically what happens is you download the app and think oh this will be great, I’m gonna go through all the hiragana I know and just move on to what I don’t know, and basically this app is set up in lessons. The first lesson being “a,I,e,o,u” and of course I knew all of that through previous study. Okay, moving on to the next lesson.... you have to pay for each subsequent lesson or pay for all the lessons as one. Ughhh.. so disappointed

No indication of paid content. This app seems really great. My only beef with it is that you only get about one lesson in each section free; you have to pay for the others. Which is understandable, sure, and the $7.99 price is reasonable enough for the content (I guess), but on the App Store Screen there was no little text saying “in-app purchases” next to the “get” button. In fact there was no indication whatsoever that you basically have to pay for the full app. Add in a little transparency there, and I’ll have no problem with it!

I don’t write app reviews but yeah.... I knew how to write hiragana and katakana in my high school days but now I totally forgot. I’ve used numerous apps and even tried to write it out. It takes a bit of effort on my end because it’s not really knowledge I necessarily need so I fail to learn the writing system in its entirety. This app helps you learn fast casually whether you’re just sitting on your sofa because of how it challenges you to recall what you just learned. That’s what sold me to purchase this app because when I realized how fast I was memorizing the vowels, I figured, why not. If it costs me less than $10 to retain the knowledge, I’m on board.

Great app!. I did the free content in this app and realized it was worth 7.99 to get the full version. The style of teaching is very intuitive for learning basic Japanese. Highly considering getting the paid version of the Kanji app by the same developer as well. This app is very high quality and you can tell that the creator knows both Japanese and English well, which is what you should look for in a teacher. My only issue is that when you click an answer there’s a slight delay sometimes, but that’s basically nitpicking. Overall I’d give this app 9.6/10

Inconsistencies in pronunciation. On lessons 12 and 14 of the basics, I’ve spotted two inconsistencies in how the app pronounces things, which casts doubt on the accuracy of everything else in the app. For one, we learn that “20 years old” is pronounced “hatachi”. But in the very next lesson, the recording pronounces this as “watachi”! Which is it?! In that same lesson, we learn that to say “one year old” you say the irregular “issai”, instead of “ichi sai”, which would be the literal reading of the characters. We are then shown that to say “31 years old”, for example, you would say “San jyu issai”. So the assumption is that whether you’re 21, 31, 41, etc, the ending of the phrase is “issai”. Yet in lesson 14, “31 years old” is pronounced as “San jyu ICHI sai”! Are these mistakes? Or two equally valid ways of pronouncing these phrases? There is no explanation in the app. How many more of these mistakes are lying hidden in the later lessons? Am I going to learn the occasional phrase completely wrong in this app and sound like an idiot when I go to Japan?

Drop Duolingo !. I love Duolingo, I've been using it for years for my French, but it's garbage. It's great if you're a kid and have no money to spend, but if you have the money, use something else. I was repeating the same first three hiragana lessons on Duolingo for weeks. I thought I was just too dumb to grasp it. After a day on this app, I FINALLY learned multiple characters that I couldn't grasp before ! Now my Japanese is actually moving along. If you're learning more than just Japanese (like me, as I mentioned I also learn French), try Babble and Drops ! Drops is free vocabulary, Babble is a paid course. I believe Drops has Japanese as well.

Really nice, but a few issues.. I have found that the “ri” Hiragana lesson is broken. When you have to draw it “リ” is shown. However, when you have to select it from a list, “り” is shown instead. This is all under the Hiragana lesson #1. It is not consistent in what it is teaching you here. Also, it would be great if you could clear the drawing of the Japanese characters. I have found that even if I draw the wrong character it will act like it was correct, showing the character on the screen behind my drawing and prompting me to move on. I wish it would allow me to clear my drawing and try again.

Simple but perfect. It works great! Honestly, the ability to practice writing the Kana on the go is reason enough to get this. But it also teaches you basic sentence structure, plays audio for pronunciation, and uses a simple menu are the cherry on top. If you’re starting out for the first time on Japanese, this will be a great introduction. If you came here after starting out on Duolingo or something else like I did, this will help you review the stuff you need and teach you some other useful words. Yes you have to pay for the full version, but $7.99 is really good and it’s a one time payment which is becoming hard to find nowadays.

Completely broken after latest update?. I won’t penalize this app with my star rating, since it’s usually great. I don’t know if it recently updated or what, but it’s completely unusable now. The green and red dots don’t line up with the characters at all, and it will mark things right even if you miss entire strokes. I hope it will be fixed soon. There’s no link to contact support that I’ve seen so far.

Exactly what i was looking for. This app is everything i wanted and is one of a kind. Haven’t found anything else on the App Store like it! This app is perfect for helping you memorize the hiragana and katakana characters. Most other apps for learning Japanese use recognition methods with sound only but i find that takes me much longer to memorize when I’m misreading the hiragana. This app pairs really really well with any other Japanese learning app though it also includes a lot of vocabulary and phrases to get you started as well. Definitely a great starting point for anyone interested in learning the language!

This is an amazing app. I would really recommend this app a 100% since it is very useful when memorizing Hiragana, Katakana, and some kanji. At the beginning I thought “this app is good! It’s a shame that you have to pay for the full version...” but now I think that it makes sense that we have to pay for the full version since it is teaching you Japanese in a very good was and they also deserve some money for it. I’m glad you guys decided that you wanted to teach Japanese and I do think that it is necessary to pay for this app since it’s not much and we get to learn a lot. Love it 😍

3.5 stars. Great app. I have learned a great deal exclusively from this app. There are some occasional bugs that need to be worked out and I wish that kanji had its own section. I believe this takes away from the aspect of learning the words themselves after learning both hiragana and katakana. It's hard to learn a word when you can't read it again because you don't understand the radicals of kanji. This has been useful in being forced to learn some kanji at least. Other than that this is the app that has taught me the most and I still do wish there was more. I would be willing to pay for this app.

Just what I was looking for!. Quick and to the point! Absolutely worth my $8. I like the "review all" button and writing feature, both of which Duolingo does not have. If I had to suggest some features to add it would be the ability to write characters with more strokes and a backspace button for when you write it wrong and need to restart writing. Overall this a wonderful app that is so useful for learning to write and identify characters fast. I see many lessons and I'm excited to do them all. Thank you to the developer for making this wonderful resource.

GREAT APP FOR LEARNERS!. I love this app. I have started back in may (now August) and I have a good grasp on hiragana and a little katakana. I use it daily to practice along with surrounding myself with videos and foods labeled in Japanese to make it a great learning experience. During my experience I’ve only had a handful of glitches, to which I emailed the developers and they were kind enough to troubleshoot through my issues, letting me know that they care about their product and consumers. Once again, would highly recommend for beginners learning Japanese.

Great, but some new features would be cool. This app has made learning Japanese really easy and effective so far! But I have a few ideas that I think could make better. 1.) It would be nice if there was a vocabulary chart for chapters 3-6 so you can quickly look at what each word means similar to the hiragana and katakana charts. There already is a massive chart on your “Kanji!” app. 2.) If there was a way to link this app and your “Kanji!” app so you can use the new words you learn on that app in complete sentences in this app.

Im impressed. I have been trying to learn Japanese for a long time now, i love the culture but i never but the effort into learning, when i foumd this app i thought id give it a try and now i have to buy the whole thing, is affordable and amazingly effective, in as little as much of an hour I’ve learned my vowels in hiragana of course i need more practice but thats the great part it lets me re do it over and over again, i will definitely be using this app more, great app 10/10

Awesome when it works. The app itself is really great. I have learned faster with this app than any other (about 6 apps) that I have tried. The cost for full lessons is really economical and each lesson is small and short which makes it effective. The problem is the random shut-offs. The app seems to freeze and quit. I have found that if you do one lesson, close the app then restart you can complete a lesson but, if you try to finish 1 lesson and go right to the next, 2/3 through the lesson the app will quit. It is a minor annoyance and doesn't affect learning but it is the reason I took a star.

Useful, well organized, learner-friendly. This app has proven to be quite useful to me, as I try to learn a language that uses calligraphy—a first for me. I really appreciate the way you can draw the characters, with guidance and corrections. I also like the way the lessons are divided, and the reminders to review past material. Those reminders seem to match up well with my needs. So, all in all, I think this is a well organized, learner-friendly app that I am happy to recommend.

I love this app. I hate how the other reviewers are complaining how you have to pay. This app is very inexpensive considering the membership basically lasts forever. I was so happy I was able to learn the first letter group so fast that I paid for the 8$ deal that lets you have all the lessons forever and I’m so happy. I only had this app for a few days and I already learned so many hirigana letters. The reason it’s not paid at first is so you can give it a try, for this I love this app. It made it so easy to memorize letters I can’t wait to learn more!!

Fantastic!. I love this app so much! I’m taking Japanese classes in person but the way the course is structured gives it a high fail rate in the level one course and there are only a handful a students who move on to level 2 and beyond. But this app has been so helpful with helping me succeed in class and actually learning the characters! It helped me better understand sentence structure too since we don’t go over that in my class. I’ve also gotten my classmates in my Japanese class to try this app as well! Also buy the full version you won’t regret it!

Learned to read and write in less than two months.. I began my journey to learn Japanese just a few months ago right before a trip to Japan. Within 6-8 weeks I was able to read and write both hiragana and katakana. Knowing how to read these had helped my learning of the language tremendously. It allows you to use dictionaries and even sound out works becoming more familiar with their proper pronunciations. I still regularly use this app to keep the knowledge fresh in my commutes to and from work and during any random downtime.

Pretty good. I really like that the app shows what you need to review and stresses reviewing what you've already gone over repeatedly rather than just moving on. I haven't tried any other methods since this is my first attempt at learning. I'm pairing it with some worksheets I found online to practice writing and stroke order. The only recommendation I would give would be adding a portion where you physically go through the strokes of writing each character out so that visual/physical learners have another tool at their disposal.

Broke my study flow. So I was enjoying the lessons and writing it all down in index cards and a notebook, until I reach a message saying that I had to pay for it. Look, there’s nothing wrong with having to pay for a product, it’s just that when you’re not warned about it before you use the product, it’s extremely depressing to see that you have to pay for lessons. Now, I have to start over again or else my notes wouldn’t be synced with whatever way I use to learn this language. This is more of a rant, so, in conclusion, if you have the money, go for it and good luck. If you don’t have the money or don’t want to pay, then don’t even bother.

😮 This is soooo good. I learned how to write the letter A in like 5 minutes maybe. I’ve mean playing this game for like a couple hours and I know so many words. It’s so much better than a lot of other Japanese games thats for 100% sure. But I wish they added on how to say words, but I am in love either way. Also one of my friends can write Japanese but not that neat. So I’m ready to prove them I can learn languages just like they can. But It’s really good! Bye uwu!

One of the best !. Yes, there is payment involved in this app. But before you immediately back out, the structure of learning plus the feature of writing stroke order and practicing calligraphy is extremely unique to this app and very helpful with both memorization and tidiness of your lettering. It is very helpful especially due to recalling characters from nothing has always been a major struggle for me—- which this app refines. It’s worth every penny and replaces expensive courses you would pay much more for.

Look elsewhere.. If you want to write out kana or kanji in an app. Look elsewhere. I was excited that I could write them out with my iPad and pencil for the first few lessons, but it quickly turned into “memorize this character” and select the answer once we reached が. I shouldn’t have been surprised that when we got to the kanji, it was more “memorized this character” and select the answer. I was very disappointed and wish I’d saved myself a few bucks and maybe tried another app instead. If I were to rate this among the other kana and kanji apps I have that don’t let me write, this would be among the lowest. There’s at least a nice UI, and it’s not so repetitive.

I LOVE this app! But if i could change one thing…... I’ve been using this app for about a year now and its been fantastic! My only complaint is I wish that you could specifically choose multiple lessons to review instead of only having the options of “review past due” and “review all”. As well I wish you could physically write out the secondary hiragana such as が ど and so on, instead of only having the quiz selection to learn them. But other than those few things this app has been INCREDIBLY helpful for me as I’ve been learning Japanese and is absolutely worth the money.

Hardcore good stuff. I’m currently using several apps to learn Japanese but this is the only one teaching me to make hiragana (the only script I’m learning right now) as opposed to just recognizing it. Learning to form the shapes makes all the difference in ability to recognize and read a new letter system. What’s more is it makes you review. Some time has passed, needs review, didn’t quite master it needs review. It can be frustrating having to write “a” until it’s perfect but it is well worth it.

Very good tool!. I took basic Japanese in high school, 20 years later, I can’t speak fluently. This app was a great refresher and does introduce kanji (which I don’t have any knowledge) slowly. It’s very good, my bf is learning with no previous knowledge of Japanese language. While it’s very, sort of basic, he only started using the app a week ago, he can now tell me the time (it’s a big deal!) and can recognize the kanji for 1 thru 10. I especially like the fill-in the blanks, it helps me to understand the sentence structure.

Great app. U have to pay $8 or $9 to have the actual info in the app. It'll only give you a small example per exercise so its useless without paying. Also, it would be wayy better if its like Duolingo where you can make an account so your progress is saved and you can continue it on another device. Thats really my only complaint because now I only get access on my ipad and not my iphone when im on the go i cant pick up where i left off. Besides that its really a great app for learning how to write and read Japanese

A+ would recommend, すごい 👌. Like other users said, you have to pay $6 total to unlock everything, but that's honestly such a small amount for what I have found to be one of the best apps out there for learning Japanese. The interface is beautifully clean and intuitive. It's fun and rewarding without adding needless fluff trying to disguise it's self as a game. It lets you go at your own pace, so it's a great start for beginners or a refresher for advanced learners. Definitely would recommend to friends!

Helpfull. This may sound like I am being told to say this... but I am not. I had tried a few apps before this, and none of them really worked. But, than I found this one and I love it. Sure, you have to pay a little bit upfront after getting it to use it... but it is worth way more than what you spend. The thing I like most about this app is the “ draw the word/ symbol” part, it helps so much! This app is a definite need if you want to either go to Japan or just learn the cool language in general.

Just making sure I’m going to get my moneys worth. I downloaded this app because I’m really interested in Japanese language. I tried out some of the free portions and I’m very impressed with the accessibility and design. It is a great app and I’m sure I will learn a lot from it. I don’t mind paying 8$ I just want to make sure that what I’m going to pay for will be accurate. I don’t want to learn incorrect Japanese. Edit: I know this app will help me to read Japanese but will it also teach me to speak it? (Question for the developer )

Good but these updates.... My app was working flawlessly a few weeks ago, but the last few days when I go through the Hiragana and katakana alphabet lessons it will briefly show one of the screens for maybe a millisecond and jump to the next one without me picking one of the options. This doesn't happen for every single one but the ones it does happen for it does it 2-3 times in one lesson. Before the update that caused this it was perfectly fine and optimal for learning. I really love this app and when I do have time I tend to use it at least once a day. I would still recommend this app, but could someone please fix this new bug?

Great if you plan to invest. I've been wanting to learn Japanese for 2 years now. When someone recommended me this app, I decided to have a try. After looking at some reviews, they mostly just complain how it isn't free. Now, I'm not made of money either but a $9 investment for all the lessons I would consider a good deal. They teach you the Japanese alphabet as well as writing and how some hiragana and katana is written differently from how its typed (like the letter "a"). All in all, if you're serious about learning Japanese and are willing to invest a bit this app is definitely worth a try.
