Vocabulary.com Comments & Reviews 2026
New Version Coming 2021?. I love this app, how it describes word meanings beyond a typical formal definition. I hate that it can’t work with the latest IOS update (June 2021). I think it’s irreplaceable as it has created its own niche in the dictionary type app. I remain hopeful after I got this email from the developers due to my query, June 15,2021: We're currently working on a new version of the app. While I can't yet share a release window, rest assured it's definitely on our priority list and our app users have not been forgotten about.
Perfect!!!. I love the fact you can choose words that you think are difficult, to show up more often, the dictionary is very helpful within the game, especially when there are words that I don't know in answers. The definitions are easy to understand, but most importantly, they supplement vocab understanding with fun and interesting sentence. It is also useful to be able to combine lists, PERFECT for SAT and other vocabulary related tests. I highly recommend combining the lists for all the, " 100 SAT beginning with a-z." Great set of vocab!
Good app but.... It's a good app, great even. But it's a bit of a drag you can't use your own lists. I want to learn the words I find. I keep running into dumb words that I already know. That's my biggest problem with it. It's crashed here and there for me. And I wish there was a back button when you're looking for lists. Sometimes I look at a list but decide I don't want it, but to look at more of what I searched, I have to redo typing it in. Minor hindrance. And you need wifi for this app to work. If you change the list thing, I'd give this app 5 stars. To recapitulate, it's an good app, in my opinion not worth $3.18, and it has little issues here and there. I'd recommend it though!
Great!. Love how they make words easy to understand by using informal language and relatable examples. Haven’t used the mastery feature yet but that sounds great - this seems really good for if you’re trying to learn vocabulary like for an exam. It gives you not just a definition but a mini article / blog post about the word and it makes the etymology easy to understand too. It feels more like reading a story and gives the word a lot of context, which makes it stick and which most other dictionaries don’t do. One minor but noticeable suggestion I’d give is to add a simple “x” in the search bar to be able to quickly clear it out to make searching for the next word easier. You also can’t edit or select the text in the search bar in any way, which is annoying. I don’t know why that would be, but you can’t move the cursor or highlight, so you can’t clear it out that way. Also noticed there’s no way to bookmark words? Many words can be marked for review / mastery, but not all. But on the other hand, one thing I really like about this dictionary compared to others also lies in the search feature where the word page will automatically come up once you’ve spelled the word or got to the point where there are no other entry possibilities. Nice feel. Also, unlike others, as you’re typing and it shows you matching words, it also shows you the start of the definition and that’s really nice. Another thing that would be really nice that other dictionaries have is the ability to simply tap on a word and it brings up its entry - it’s tough not having that when you’re so used to it
Simply the best app to more be creative with words and being open minded.. The best app to learn new words everyday and have an open mind and have your mind from nonsense games out there, that wastes your time only. Definitely I recommend to everybody, but specially for those whom are foreigners like myself. It gives the options to learn and focus more on those words you need the most. And perhaps some change may need but maybe that could be adding the options from changing language to others so don't have the need leave the app but have one app open only, that would definitely save lot of times and money. Congratulation to the creator of this and for being so benevolent to share his creativity.
A learning aid like no other. First off, this app is incredibly well designed. It has a point system and many "achievements" that make you feel good about learning words. Further, the definitions of the words are explanations, written in plain, comprehensibe English. I went online and created my own word list and I also found a list in the app's word list database. This way I can learn the words I see in everyday readings, as well as challanging words I'm not used to seeing. This app actually helps you learn vocabulary, I've already noticed a difference in the way I write from only using this app for about 3 months. I would recommend every person who values written and verbal expression, which should be all of us. 5 out of 5 stars.
Great idea, but no updates!. The app is a terrific idea but has one major issue: no updates in over a year on a purchased app which seems a bit ridiculous considering the amount of bugs and issues still left (e.g., I still can't mute the audio when mastering a word even when my phone itself is muted). That said, it's certainly worth the expense and I still enjoy using the app regularly. It has a clean and unobtrusive interface, making it quite simple to use. Would definitely be 5 stars if the developers rolled out even a small bug fixes every few months.
A great way to expand your vocabulary!. This is a great somewhat gamified (but not overwhelmingly so) way to learn vocab words. Ive been using it off and on for years, its a great low-stimulation thing to do before bed, on plane rides, etc. I appreciate the thorough and sometimes cheeky word definitions, they do a lot to help the word stick. Sometimes it gets annoying with how often you have to practice the same word but I appreciate it because thats the right way to really learn rather than just click through feeling like you’re learning.
Needs an update for newer iphones. iPhone 13 resolutions aren’t properly supported by the app. Poor UX experience.. If you have an older iphone, like the iphone se, it should be fine. With that being said, the app works well for vocabulary. I find myself using the words I learn throughout the day. What I appreciate about this app, is how much they make you review the word. The app seems to focus more on REVIEW than it does learning. Which is how learning works. seems to be like 90% review, 10% new words. I could read the dictionary if i wanted to find new words. This app gives you a few words to start with, then hammers them into you. Then, you may see a new word. While still being hammered with old words. Continue with this app, try to be ranked 50,000. You will find yourself using your improved vocabulary throughout the day; or at least find opportunities where you could have used the new word.
It’s a good app but can be improved. I feel the user interface is not fully optimized with IOS and as matter of fact I think the quality of written words are not good and a bit blurry which puts me off and besides if there were more examples not just excerpts from articles that sometimes is uncomprehensive , instead I suggest using practical examples exactly like Longman dictionary does the examples in Longman are really good and clear. in short the app is amazing , keep up the good work!.
Frustrating First Impression. I never buy apps. I bought this one. I’m enjoying some facets — features — but as a writer I’m waylaid by the fact there are no etymological addendums to the definitions of a word. Only a showing of dozens of ways/places a word is presented. Two or three would have been sufficient. I need to track a word’s origin to get to its essence — this is critical to my writing. Now I must leave the app, launch a browser, log on to an online dictionary and look for the etymology there. Frustrating. Also on my new iPhone, running the most current IOS, trying to engage with the fields within the app finds me often pressing repeatedly into the field to get the keyboard to engage — sometimes it will finally allow typing, other times — like attempting to leave feedback today — the field for typing was just a frozen chunk of space. Ironic as I couldn’t share suggestions with the developer. I’ll continue to experiment with the app, but I’m moving towards asking for a refund.
Awesome!. I'm gonna write a 'terse' review here. I just downloaded the app and played with it for a about three days. Some things that would make it better for my personal use. 1. I like to learn in parts. I can study one part, or list, In the case of this app; Leadership is the first list that I want to practice and focus on for about a week or two; Then I want to move on the the list, "100 words every high schooler should know" for the next couple weeks. - Can we have some sort of queue for lists we want to study at a later time? 2. Option to get daily or weekly push notifications for a word of the day or week. Apple Watch compatibility here would be nice as well. Just a quick read if you're committed to this sort of learning. 3. Complete dictionary and functionality of this app in offline mode. That means everything is stored on the phone and obviously no connection needed to use app. (I would pay extra for this feature !!) This is what I would like to see in future updates. This app is a easy and efficient way to expand your vocabulary. I use this app for 15 minutes everyday during my first break at work. The repetitiveness and game like aspect of this dictionary is great for learning new words and how to use them. I use it as much as I use duolingo so if you like that, then you'll love this app. It will make you a better speaker over the long haul if you commit to it. Not too "terse" after all.. but reasonable. 😄
This app helps me TREMENDOUSLY!. I really don’t have a super huge vocabulary for my age. I need to look up a lot of words a lot of the time. I also have to look up the same words multiple times because I almost immediately forget the definition right after I look it up. I love the way that the dictionary function of this app gives word definitions! It makes it a million times easier for me to understand what the word means. It gives a short simple one to two sentence explanation of the word, gives an example of a sentence you could use the word in, gives the breakdown of the root latin words, then goes into the standard dictionary definitions and usage examples. The way the app explains the words is just so much easier for me to understand then opening up a standard dictionary. This app have been very helpful for me when I read my Bible!
It could be great.. The app uses a variety of multiple choice questioning techniques and to master a word you must spell it. This is great. What I don't like is how the app reuses the same questions over and doesn't change the possible answers. There should be other words you are learning in the multiple choice answers to make it more of a learning experience. I can remember the words which I am being quizzed on and know the answer before reading the question; this is counterproductive to the learning experience. Also, to master a word you should have to type it in without hearing it read out loud. Maybe make different difficulty settings? I would pay 9.99 for this app if these changes were made.
Good app for training vocabulary. I personally really enjoy using this app to train my vocabulary since I’ve always had problems with it in school, and my class also had us sign up for it anyway. I like the point system and the way the app functions with all of the questions and words and lists and such, only problem with the functionality is the inability to reach the Vocabulary Jams on the mobile app (have to go to the website), and it’s not as easy to use if you need to change list to list (almost no change sometimes), and there are no class-related functions on the mobile app at all, which was quite annoying.
Good but not perfect. Works well. The way it figures out your level and uses repetition is excellent. But I can’t five star it because some of the definitions it gives just aren’t up to par. It’s nice when it gives history and roots. But it doesn’t always do that. On “reticulate” it used the same word in the explanation/definition! Also the definitions are always the same even when the questions vary and with words like “sublimate” it gets too tricky because it wants you to figure something out that it hasn’t gone anywhere near explaining.
Highly customizable app!. I think the amount of time and energy the developer spent to build this app deserve the attention of we, the users! I am an ESL student who’s enthusiasm for learning new English words made him use a plethora of apps. But this app is something different. You can use a set of predefined words to master or you can fancy making yours. Personally,I like the usage example section. When I was looking up for “Gargantuan” definition I didn’t expect a presence of the word as recent as September 20th ,2018 in Wall Street Journal, quite astonishing! I just have some minor issues with the app, mostly about look. There is a feeling that you’re using a converted web app, not a native iOS app. And speaking of the web app there are some features that are only accessible through web, like huge predefined words list or make a list out of a short page automagically.
mediocre 4 stars max. I would and wouldn't recommend. If your school uses it then that is fine but if you are using just to learn vocab words and your school doesn't use it I WOULDN'T recommend. Here is why. I use it for school and my teacher assigns lists so it is easier to learn the coach words by this because we take tests on here to so it is just easier. BUT if you are using it to search up definitions and attempt to make a list for let's say the list of words your teacher gave you, then it starts adding words that they think you wouldn't know. For example, we are reading A Raisin in The Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and we have a 35-word list for act one. I am getting words like canon pop up on the learning queue and that is not a word on the original list. I wanted to know one so u read the progress on that word and it said that it added it because it thought I wouldn't know it. That could be nice if your goal is to expand your vocab but if you are learning a specific list it gets annoying quickly. Once again, I would rate it 4 stars max.
I've waited for this app a zillion years!. This is an amazing app and totally worth buying. It fills the gap between dictionaries and flash card apps. Very effective method of learning words and phrases. This said, I must add that it needs improvement in both performance and features. Most importantly, the ability to add words to user lists. This is available in the web app but it's not yet implemented in ios version. And I have waited for a couple of months for the update to come. I feel a little dissapointed about this. Anyway Thanks for the great app and still looking forward to seeing better versions
Best dictionary app. Worth the cost of the app just for the dictionary alone. Many dictionaries will use the word in the definition, but this one doesn't. Definitions include sentences using the word, word families, a short paragraph explaining the word, and sometimes a link to a blog post that goes into more detail, if you're interested. Not only is the dictionary great, the challenge is executed well. Plus you can create your own list of words to practice in the challenge. It's easy to add a word from the dictionary to your practice list. My only complaint is that occasionally the app won't prompt you to add a word you've looked up to your practice list. The developers need to work on that!
Great app, really happy, couple suggestions. 1. I would really like the ability to highlight text so I can copy paste it. 2. Often the app fails to open keyboard (I use the default English keyboard) when trying to type in text boxes. Should be an easy glitch to fix. It was most notable when signing up with an account and providing feedback to a text box question. (I spelt it right but it was capitalized and counted it wrong) And that’s it at the moment. I did say a just couple. Highly recommend this app, I’ve already asked a few relatives to get it for themselves. :D
Good and useful app but.... I like it and it's been useful - helping me with pronunciation and studying for the MAT. The repetition is good and the different meanings and context are very helpful. My only two complaints: there is no opt-out button for words I already know. I wish they would make one! And when you make a list - they plug in other words along with your list words - which is frustrating when I need to learn specific terms and only want to practice those words. Right now, I'm trying to learn the list I made for the Periodic chart - and after several rounds - I have only had two words of the list and the rest has been a mess of words from The Challenge. It's frustrating when you are trying to study for something specific.
Handy Application for on-the-go. I have a huge problem with not knowing words, especially hearing words that may seem like I should know them, but don’t have the knowledge, or haven’t heard them at all. With this app being accessible for the iPhone, I can search up words, add them, and the quiz/questions that challenges me to understand the words that I want to know is a really great tool. I just wish that the bottom portion that states “start learning this word” was a little higher for my phone screen. Feels like it’s cut off and won’t adapt to my phone screen. But other than that issue. I really like this app
Update Coming?. I've never been one to just pop-off in reviews. That being said, I'd like to ask if this app is still actively monitored by its developers? Last update in 2014? You have a nice platform here, lots of good ideas implemented; but, will there be anymore? I have a few suggestions: 1. When a user chooses the "look-up" option, it would be really nice to have the field to enter new words automatically clear itself. Right now, one must click the "x" to clear it. Just annoying. 2. There are a NUMBER of words that are not formatted to be able to add them to one's learning list. Often times, another variation of the word is an option, which is great. The times I find frustrating are when words ARE ALREADY VISUALLY formatted and looking like they are in the format learning option words show up as; but there is NO way to add them! The field asking if one wants to start learning them is absent! Why is that? It looks like someone forgot the last step! Please figure out a way to remedy this problem. You've already done the work to present the word - add the means to add it to the user's learning list! 3. I have enjoyed the variety of ways you allow the user to cement word meanings into memory. Much praise is due here! I would love it if you could implement the means to reinforce learning with the screens that show just a word as the question and then reflect short definitions as the list from which to choose! You allow the opposite with screens listing just single words from which to select in response to the question that states the definition. You list the word options WITH the look-up option for each. Can you connect the words being defined on the definition options screen to be able to click on the definition to see the word that is being defined? What a great addition to the app that would be! I'm often intrigued reading the definitions left bereft of what word they refer to!! Thanks for your consideration.
Like & dislike…. I found this application through the website, and very recently downloaded it. I really love how interactive it is, especially with the games - because you wind up learning from them. HUGE problem now (and something I didn’t even realize while downloading, which would’ve likely been a red flag for me): this app hasn’t been updated in SEVEN YEARS…😳 Since I updated my iPhone to the latest iOS, I can’t use the application at all, until & IF the developer(s) updates it. I’m honestly really bummed out, because I switched from all of my previous dictionary apps when I downloaded this, and now I can’t even USE it?! Also, like…seven years, really? Developer(s): could you PLEASE update the app for us who REALLY do love this app & would like to keep using this in the form of an app, NOT a website (because it’s much more accessible for certain people, including myself, a disabled human). And could you start making it a regular thing to update it too…? I will GLADLY edit/update my review & stars if any of this gets done/I see some real consistent progress.
Great practice for SAT!!. I am in love with this app. I downloaded it because I wanted to learn some words for the SAT and I love how it is designed! The repetition, awards, and encouragement really helps and makes me want to learn more and continue using this app. Almost daily I'm on it and trying to use the words that I learned on a daily basis. I love how you can choose your own words to learn and how there are pre-made vocabulary lists. With all this vocabulary, I don't feel so artless* anymore! *one of the many words I learned! If you are debating buying this app, DO IT. It's so helpful!!
Great for improving vocabulary. This is my favorite app & website for learning new vocabulary. The words are well explained and there are diverse quizzes for each word that target different aspects of understanding and usage. Content is great but the app is a bit glitchy. When you look up words during play, the definition becomes off centered. Also swiping left after you look up a word during play pulls up a page from a previous definition. What I want to do is to return to play mode.
Very well designed. This app is great and even more user friendly than the web site! Someone reviewed that it was just for high schoolers - not true! It does take some time for the program to learn your level, but stick with it and it will get very challenging! Try creating your own lists if you are impatient. I love that it shows my progress on individual words when I complete a game segment, but I was wish it reminded me which ones I got wrong so I could quickly review them.
I just can't stop.... I have things to do but won't leave my iPhone alone. Very addictive and since I adore reading I can see where this app can open many literary doors. I gave it 4 stars because it seems to lose connection but doesn't necessarily crash. Would like to see a button to add words you want to learn within the operating screen. Love this app. PS My daughter already knows the words she's being given so she is frustrated and needs harder words. I am thinking this is because of her age. However, reading, literacy and grammar are her strengths.
Great app, but not perfect.. The Vocabulary app is very intuitive and efficient in helping you build your vocabulary. However, they still do not save search history and you must delete every letter in the search bar before typing in another word. Those two small yet significant factors would give this app five stars. There are many times I wish I could save terms, but I cannot because they aren’t available to “save” and I can’t look up my search history. Other than those two things, Vocabulary app is great.
4/5 of the screen is completely black.. As stated above, 4/5 of the screen is completely black, which makes it nearly impossible to use the app. I am using an IPad mini 4, and this has not happened on any of the other apps I have used. I have removed and reinstalled the app multiple times, but this bug does not go away. The only way I have found to not trigger the bug is to open the app in portrait. If I try to switch it to landscape after this, I can no longer type on the very right hand side of the screen, meaning I can't access the letters l and p, and I can't type the backspace button. This is also the only side of the screen which is visible when I open the app in landscape. Because of this bug, I rate the app 1 star. If it weren't for its dysfunction, I would rate the app 5 stars.
Really?. I don't understand how tedious multiple choice questions on remedial words could possibly be the solution to fun vocabulary building we've all been looking for. You have to go through and pick or make lists of words, then just answer massive amounts of multiple choice questions. What? Really? What a waste of $3. I mean, the least they could do is group it into easy/medium/hard type levels. Some of us are actually over a 5th grade reading level! If you have a child that struggles with reading comprehension, this is the app for you. If you're an adult that wishes to have a more complex vocabulary to draw from, look elsewhere. It's neither fun nor useful, and the effective ways to learn words they mention in the description is a load of..... Got a word for that?
The best app. This is my favorite app. It makes learning new words easy and fun. You can create your own vocabulary lists to learn and master or choose from many other lists based on the subject you want to learn. This app has changed my life. I do have ADHD, but this app keeps me totally engaged in the words. I used to have so many problems with learning, but I am getting better and better everyday thanks to this app. I am forever grateful for all the work the developers put into this and for making it affordable. I highly recommend this app. I haven’t had any problems with it all. If you really want to learn, this is the app to get. It will help you.
One thing I wish they would add. I really like this app. The thing I wish they would add is the quick erase option in the search bar. Many times I’ve made mistakes in spelling a word I’m looking up and it’s laborious to back space the entire word in the search bar to start over. Most search boxes have this option. Please add a quick erase option to the search bar. Otherwise, this app is extremely helpful. I really like how they give multiple examples of a word in use so it makes difficult words more easily understood. I use it often.
"Ought" to be more. I noticed that words like "ought" are not in the dictionary and I had to look it up elsewhere. The old English word "aught" is inadequately defined as "nothing" when it's actually "something" and that's a big difference. This is a app that has great potential but needs work in these areas to compete with the other dictionaries: 1) Offline use - most dictionary apps I've used have an offline use to define words. Really great to save data. I can understand the need for internet connection for the games within the app but let the users have offline access to the looking up words. 2) Etymology - I would like the app to include more on the Etymology of the words, their old English root meanings and not just Latin. I feel there's not enough of that compared to other dictionary apps. 3) Updates - Updates for the app should not only be when there are bugs to squash to improve usage but vocabulary additions or updates on the words that I mentioned. I had hoped that this would be my "all in one" dictionary app that would help me expand my vocabulary and dig deep into the etymology. Please, work on including these features into the next update. If the developers would include the offline use feature then I would give it a 5 star!
Limited functionality. The website version of this is invaluable, and the app is very useful as well for practicing vocab, but something that I would really like to see in future updates is the ability to add words to and edit your lists through the app, preferably with an option to add a word to a list directly from the definition page. I'm not sure why app developers limit such important features like this but it makes the app not nearly as useful to me because instead of looking up a word I come across while reading then adding it to one my lists, I have to wait until I can get to my computer and then add it by editing the list. I probably would not have bought the app if I had knew it was missing this function, but overall it is still a good app and others may not miss the feature.
Liked it but.... I really like this app! For one, the program allows you to learn new words depending on your knowledge toward other words. For two, the app helps you understand words better! However, like any app, the program has things to fix. For instance: - check definitions (on some words it has incorrect definitions, don't be alarmed, I've had this for around 2 months and I've only seen 2 words with wrong wording) - not use the same questions (I know it can be very hard to come up with new questions for more than 2,000 words, but you have to start somewhere. Overall I think this app is wonderful and I do recommend to others! It's fun to learn new words to not only expand your leaning potential and vocabulary intake, but also use these big words when talking to your friends, just to seem a little smarter ;)
As close to most efficient as we got.. There are so many tools and ways to improve your vocabulary out there that it makes for a real challenge to find the one you'll want for a standard. I would love for the team to build this app towards excellence by focusing on key principles of memory, learning and psychology. Semantic chunking is a much better and proved way to learn vocabulary instead of alphabetical order. But I'm giving the app 5 stars because it follows most of the core principles around its goals, and by doing that it becomes a very effective tool in your language learning/improving kit. A must have.
Great concept. Strong app for learning but poor on customization (making one's own lists or creating word and definition entries) and runs a weak dictionary. For example: "objurgation" is available, so is "abjuration"but "objuration" is not. Interestingly, there were many words I could not find in lists even though they were in the app dictionary. On the plus side, the app is designed with short drills which allow one to keep going or stop without feeling one has not "finished" a workout. So, it is not tedious. It has an appealing aesthetic which is inviting. Again, on the negative side, the definitions are not always of the most common modern usage of the terms, sometimes the choices in the drills can be misleading if one wants to pick the most common definition, and equally importantly one cannot choose which individual terms to include - or not include - in drills (game mode). The most irritating point, though, is not being able to include one's personal choices of words and definitions. Customer service is poor. Several email attempts to contact the company for explanations have not been answered, (nor have the emails been acknowledged).
Impressive!. I downloaded this application about five days prior to providing a reviewing of its efficacy and it has certainly risen to my top 5 list of most valuable applications to have. I speak candidly when I say that my vocabulary has increased exponentially since my first use and continues to grow accordingly. If you are looking to expand your vocabulary you have found the most appropriate approach to do so as this app would be the most apt tool for the job. Enjoy. My review Before this app: Awesome app Def did what I needed it too would have spent more if asked!
Love the App, Frustrated by Its Limitations. I’ve been using this app for years, and it’s been a fantastic tool for building my vocabulary. However, my main issue is that it seems like the developer team has stopped actively maintaining or improving the app. This is echoed by other users in the reviews. There are a few features that could use updates, but it feels like no one is checking messages or making the necessary changes. For example, there’s no way to revisit and relearn words I’ve mastered in the past. Once a word is marked as mastered, there’s no option to re-add it to your learning queue, even if you’ve forgotten it. Additionally, when I search for new words to learn, the app sometimes pulls up the definition but doesn’t show the option to start learning the word. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to when this happens, and it can be frustrating. These seem like simple UI fixes, but I’m not confident that there’s anyone on the team actively addressing these issues. That said, it’s still a great app if you’re willing to work around its limitations. Just know that you may need a supplementary vocabulary app to fill in the gaps. Despite these drawbacks, I still use and love the app—it just has its fair share of frustrations.
Favorite app for a smarty. This app is amazing. It definitely has some bugs/parts it could fix such as the definitions of some words & expanding its vocabulary content. I love that it contains a fun way to learn words by playing. It's a smart idea since I am addicted to playing! I love learning new words and there is no better way than this! I would definitely rate this five stars if only it contained more day to day use of words (I search up words sometimes & they aren't there which is frustrating since it is a vocab app, so please fix this! If dictionary app is free and has more variety of words, an app that costs money should definitely be on top of its game.) Also some definitions could definitely be a bit off, confusing or don't offer all the different meanings of a word. Still rating it four stars because I love the game and keeps my tongue top-notch ;).
FINALLY INTERFACE UPDATED!!!. Honestly, i have not found a better app to learn GRE vocabulary or increase my range of vocabulary. This app had major issues for ~2 years because the team was slow on updating the app with the updates for the newer iPhones. Thank you to the developers and tech team for finally updating the app. I hope the team continues to make changes and updates with the new screens and focuses their time on the user friendliness. If they continue doing so, with a little bit more marketing, they will be the top vocabulary app - no doubt about it. Word Hippo, word of the day, nothing compares. Keep it going!!!
A-W-E-S-O-M-E!!! 📓📕📒📔📗📘📙📚. Omg! This game is awesome! It is fun in the competitive and points aspect, but educational in the way of the new words. The app is beneficent and so worth the money. I would highly recommend this to all teachers, and if you don’t have a school subscription I would inform your teacher on this site so they can utilize its educational value. In this game, you basically get a quiz and answer with spelling and definitions, and if you get it right at the first time you receive a certain amount of points. You get ranks based of the amount of points you have and also get put on school, class, district, and overall leaderboards. You definitely should invest in this app. My 6th grade class uses this, and all of my friends compete with me and each other. I am happy because I am up 30,000 points. You really need to get this.
Useful but Flawed. This definitely helps educate and build one's vocabulary HOWEVER, I've noted the following drawbacks: 1. No volume control (on hearing the word pronounced properly) 2. Unable to access the working list of words (and a brief description) while in the exercise or upon completion.( Each chapter is accompanied by a recap of select words, not all.) 3. Once an exercise or chapter is completed, there does not appear to be a way retake the section OR obtain a list of the newly learned words. If you really want to retain the information, you have to write it down, which sort of defeats the purpose. I'd like to recommend this app to friends and family, but will wait until these frustrating transgressions are addressed.
Great customer service and context. They have added the capability to use your own lists! I emailed them as soon as app came out requesting this feature, and they sent a personal email back the next day telling me they had already planned to create this feature and it would be out soon. Within a few days, it was! I also love the context they provide of articles and classic literature, because it isn't, in contrast to most vocabulary learning tools, mind-numbingly dull. You're sort of doubling down on learning. Better than the actual website, in fact.
Can't even sign up for this app.. UPDATE: apparently there was a technical problem on the website itself, which directly affected the app as well. It was solved within hours and I've received an email with explanation why there were problems at first place. Now, I was expecting to see the app that already has a set of vocab lists to prepare for GRE (the are a few GRE lists there but they only have 30words). I personally find it more productive to learn by choosing the right answer for the words I'm learning. I gave the four starts just because among a huge variety of different lists of words that have been derived from different sources, you kinda have to build your own.. and it takes time to do so... other than that it's a pretty useful app that provides a great description for each word you are currently learning. Oh and the feature of simply clicking on some words that look unfamiliar and finding their full description, that pretty awesome! And that's the way you build your own list of words.. if only it was all prepared specifically for GRE.
Stop with the filler words.. I understand the team intended for this to be a tool to expand the vocabulary of people, and that means introducing them to new words. But you have to understand, teachers are not using this for that reason. Sure, if this site is being used by a teacher it’s to make students learn new words, this is true. However, almost always are these teachers looking for complete mastery of a list they assigned. Your program adding new, random words in to the point where the remaining words to be mastered from the needed list rarely show up is ridiculous and unacceptable. Your program makes doing such a thing almost impossible. It will take a student hours just to finish one list because of this feature, making this app inefficient, not user friendly, and a poor choice for any teacher trying to use this to help students. If there is some feature that can disable this inside the website, I would be grateful to find it, and my rating would increase! Because other than this feature, this app is a great tool, and requires application of vocabulary knowledge. This makes one actually learn the words. Once again, this feature that adds in words because the list isn’t long enough or because most of the words have been mastered is killing this app. Thank you.
Pretty okay!. I really, really, really wish they would put a competitive aspect into this app besides "how much you have used the app." I want to compete with my friends to see who has a better vocabulary! Otherwise, it's fine. There are some interface tweaks it could use, but it basically works pretty well and teaches you new words. I wish you could set "levels" for the rarity of words you learn; it's teaching me words I've never heard, probably will never encounter and will likely never use, and I'd rather reinforce terms I am likely to need but can't remember.
Good but . . .. I love their website and the gamification of learning vocabulary. I bought the app because their website is not very mobile friendly and I wanted to be able to use the features on my phone. The only complaint I have is that I cannot edit lists on my phone. This is a huge problem for me because I like to add Merriam Webster's Word of the Day podcast's words into a list to learn. It's hard to get on the vocabulary website everyday to do that and I was hoping for easier access on my phone. Please add this feature!

Good app, room to improve. Good app for learning new words with the games/quizzes built in. I also love the examples of use extracted from recent news paper/publications. The “learn this word” tab doesn’t always come up automatically and there’s no other way to add the word to the learning queue. It also needs to add phonemic to it to help learning pronunciation.
Great, but needs some love. The platform is great, but this app has not been updated in years. The format doesn’t fit the new phones and tablets nicely. Adding new words is difficult, as the button to add a new word pops up by chance and is not consistent. Another feature that is lacking is a review option to only play mastered words.
Good app but needs to update for iOS. I used this app every morning for 5 minutes to help me learn new words and found it super effective! Unfortunately I haven’t been able to use it for the last few weeks because it needs to be updated for the current version of iOS. It would be great if they could do this ASAP! Thanks!
An dictionary written by human, for human. I think it’s pretty obvious and safe to say that few other apps are more learner friendly than this one as all the word definitions are unwrapped around daily use. It’s absolutely amazing to see the examples are literally up to date!
Awesome. Great app guys! Props to the people who created it. Theres also a bit of humour in some of the definitions which makes learning new words more enjoyable
Amazing. A great app. I really enjoy reading the simplified definitions and also playing games to learn more vocabulary. Highly recommended. Two suggestions : please add a cross (x) next to the text box for the word entry so it can be easily erased rather than using backspace. Please add an option to add more words into your vocabulary list.
Disappointment. This app could be useful to those looking to improve their vocabulary over long turn, but not for those with an English test coming within a month and need to improve vocabulary in a specific field fast. Even after choosing my own list to learn, it still gives me questions on many irrelevant words which is pretty annoying. The connection is also extremely slow (takes more than 10s to load a question, and it doesn't matter whether I'm using wifi or 4G), but that could be just me. Anyway, I had really hoped this app would work but it just turned out to be a disappointment.
One step away from being perfect. The interface is beautiful, simple and user-friendly, pronunciation of words are clear, games are educational and straight-forward. Especially love the function of saving words that i'm not familiar with to learning queue. However the saving option only appear by chance. There's no button to add words to queue and i'll have waiting for the option to pop up every time. Other then this trouble, i'm loving the app so far and it is one of my favourite apps.
Great App!. Am really enjoying this app it's easy to use and quite intuitive. The words it chooses are interesting and challenging. I would highly recommend it. Only negative feedback is that sometimes the choices you need to pick from are a bit of a stretch or not quite plausible, but this is rare and there is a button which allows you to give feedback in these cases. Buy and learn!!
Great but needs an update. I'm reading a book and decided to add the words I don't know into the app, However the starting learning this word feature is not always available, sometimes if i keep re- loading it'll work but at least 25% of the time the option isn't available
Words Fail Me. OK, maybe they don't, since I'm writing this review. The quiz style games are easy to follow and the way they appear to the user really does help that user to remember new words. It also seemed to me that it did not take long for the app to get a feel for the user's proficiency in English. This a great educational app.
Um.. Description did not specify that the 'start learning' option is only for some words and not available for others. For most of the words I looked up, such an option was not available. Such a let down since this is the main reason I bought the app - so that I could conveniently curate a list of words to learn later while looking up definitions. Please tell me I'm doing something wrong here and that there's something I haven't tapped on!
Almost perfect. 5 stars for adding the private list feature I wrote in my last review. Now the only issue is the "start learning word" button doesn't always come up on some words and it's really frustrating. This is hands down my favourite vocab builder. PLEASE fix this little bug :)
Very helpful app!. I like how you can easily search up words and add them to your list. Also gives you sentences which use the word in context. Another great thing is being able to add words from a book you’ve read by searching it up on lists. Highly recommended!
This is amazing. Despite lookup page which has not any button to add vocabulary to learning cycle, everything is unbelievably awesome
Great app!. Definitely worth the money. Great to spend a few minutes here and there improving your vocab. It's amazing how often you notice a new words once you've learnt it.
Brilliant app. For those who possess an incredible affinity and passion for the English language, this is a 'must go to' app! Furthermore, the inclusion of the etymology of most words in this app is fantastic!
Good App!. Useful explanation and helpful functions. But when using, the whole control of system is not comfortable and it cannot download the new word lists.
App needs to reflect capabilities of website please. No where near as helpful as the website. The website itself offers the chance to do the spelling bee, reset scores on lists and import text in to create your own list. I would love the app to be as easy to use and versatile as the website as it is an amazing program
The best for English learners. Wow this app is just worth every single dime. I'm impressed by how fast it builds up my vocabulary in my profession (Law) in just a few days. I get to choose and keep focusing on words with abstract meanings that I could hardly remember without this app. Thank you for creating this!
Not fully compatible with the new 10.5 inch model.. It used to work nicely on my old iPad mini. However, it doesn't support the resolution of my new 10.5 inch model that the whole app is a bit blurry. Please release an update to this great app. Thanks.
This what I've been looking forward. You people got into my head and pulled out my ideal vocabulary website. Many, many thanks.
Brilliant. Explanations are delicate and accurate. Making searching for a vocab such an enjoyment. Just as good as the web version but easier to envisage and LOVE the neat look. There is a quiz tab where you can play the quiz of guessing a word's meaning in context.
Addictive. At first, I doubted the authenticity of definitions as my progress sucked, yet later it became apparent this app uses all and sundry sort of meanings to a lexicon. It greatly relies on memory as well. I like the up-to-date examples and their contexts. Kudos! Feedback: it would be perfect if phonetic transcriptions be added.
Pretty good. Had a scrolling issue at the beginning with the lookup function, now seems to be fixed. Over all quite useful.
Too easy, link to word lists inoperative. As per title above, hoping to expand the vocabulary of the kids, but examples were way too easy. If there’s a way to choose harder lists, we could not find it as the link button to other word lists was inoperative on my iPhone 11. Not impressed, may be helpful to those learning English or under 10 years old, but we suspect the app is buggy.
Best vocabulary learning app. Been with Voc for over 2 years, all time favourite. I love how the app doesn't layout all meaning for you but instead tells you how a word is used most of the time. Also, love the fact Voc also tells you where the word is from (Greek or Latin).
Ready app. I love this app. I use it quite frequently. I was hesitant to buy it as I don't usually buy app's but it has exceeded expectations.
Better than the dictionary. It explains words in a way that is understandable, relatable and relevant. Unlike the dictionary which makes words seem the exact same as their synonyms, it paints all words differently so you know when to correctly use them.
Great app. This app has helped me to understand words that I took for granted. It teaches me a whole new vocabulary, and how to properly use it to my full advantage.
Update Required. App is not working with the latest software version 14.6 of Apple. It is very convenient app to use with easy to understand explanation and examples.
Please don’t abandon this wonderful app!. I love this app a lot as it helps me build up my vocabulary day by day in a fun way, unlike other flash card apps. But the app hasn’t been updated for 3 years! I am afraid that one day it might not work anymore on newer iOS systems. Please keep the fun going! Thank you!
App doesn’t work properly. When using the app and close it to use a different app. When you reopen Vocab, it freezes. You have to turn it off from the collection windows, then open Vocab again for it to work. This happens in iPhone X and all newer versions of iPhone.
Could be so much better. I was really excited to use this app but just found it lacking. If you compare the app to the website it's like chalk and cheese. The app does not have 50% of the functionality of the website. The game/play mode does not save your progress. And at novice level the words/meaning are very difficult. As someone that wants to expand his vocab I really wanted this to work.....and it didn't.
Buy only if your English is already good. It brings example sentences from good references. But this does not mean that you can infer the meaning of the word from this sentence. You don’t know the context. Add this that there are other unknown words in the example because this sentence is from a qualified source. You may say that I should read the explanations. Why don’t you prepare proper sentences? It does not adjust itself according your level because the main thing it does is bringing example sentences from qualified sources. Hence it cannot adjust. My IELTS score is 6.5. If your score is higher than this buy it otherwise don’t.
Good app but can use an update. I like the app, it's very useful and good for vocab building. the dictionary defines words well and makes it easy to learn the word. But the user interface can be improved (an easier button to save words & a button to clear all letters after searching) and an offline dictionary would be nice! but overall, good app.
App to build vocabulary. This app is indeed a good way to build vocabulary. Though it has really nice features, i expect more from it. Because it exudes much more possibility than it has now. I would love to have a scientific method in this app to learn word to sow them in short and long term memories. Even i master a word i want that to be asked in longer periods continuously. Also i wish they had more questions to crosscheck the word we learned. Unconciously i tend to memorize the questions :( it should eliminate that problem much more efficiently.
Great app. Very good app to improve vocabulary. I work 5 to 10 minutes daily, it is always a pleasure, and slowly but surely, I learn each day new words.
The app developers are LAZY!. Whilst the app isn’t terrible, the company is profoundly lazy; they have not given a significant update on this app in YEARS. It is awkward to use: you search for a word, and only sometimes does it give you the option to ‘start learning this word’. Then if you add a word to your list, it automatically attributes it to a list that you cannot fully control and edit - you have to go hunting around the app to find exactly which list the Vocabulary app has put it. It has soo much potential to be a useful app, but the creators are LAZY lazy little humans who cannot be bothered to improve their maladroit app. If Quizlet simply offered the thesaurus/sentence example feature that the Vocabulary app has, they would win hands down and render this cumbersome app obsolete.
Love it. I really love this app and website, ive been using it for a long time and find it very useful, however the app hasnt been updated in ages and i really think some things should be optimised and tweaked.
Love the app!. I really like this app! Always trying to improve my vocabulary and this is super helpful! :) please keep making improvements on this :)) thanks!
Great app. It helps me improve my vocabulary as I'm speaking English as a second language. However, I feel something is missing that could help me further such as when a difficult word that takes me a long time to remember.
A fantastic learning tool!. I love this app. I use it for myself as well as my students. Its great amount of lexis and entertaining way of learning vocabulary deserve the highest praise. It's for every English speaker.
Good app but lacking upgrade and support from its developers. This app should be optimized for newer iphone models from the X series. The interface is alright but it doesnt allow users to add new words into lists. Very laggy and closes down for no reason sometimes. The website, however, is so good. Please make some improvements since i can see so much potential in this app.
Highly recommended for those who have basic level in English. You’ll enjoy practicing your English with this app
Good features but has UX issues.. App functionality is good but personally I think it’s resolution is not good. Everything looks larger than normal. Really difficult to work with when keyboard pops out to type. I’m using iPhone 7 plus.
Update. When will this sensational app be updated, have been waiting months! Please update… please as it’s such a useful app!!
Great vocab app!. Only had the app for one day, but I am impressed! Plethora of words available to learn and the means by which the app tests you varies... pictures may even be used to assess your memory of a word and its meaning. I would highly recommend this app for anyone wanting to improve their vocabulary in a fun and self-directed fashion.
Very good app for advancing vocabulary. This is not for a beginner - but it was exactly what I was looking for as an educated English speaker. In a world of dumbed down vocab and conversation I am trying to repair my word power, and this app does the job. The words are placed in a literary context but the commentary is in every day speech and sometimes very funny.
Great learning tool and words book plz. Amazing English learning app more than just dictionary. It explains the teach you the vocabularies in an understandable and all-rounded way, most of annotations and sentences are original and interesting, love it. Wish it could develop a more easy use word book saving function.

Won’t Open. Just bought this app and it does not open properly.
stopped working completely. I opened it today after a while and I can only see a quarter of the application in my ipad pro. please fix this bug thanks.
App crashes a lot. Please fix the crashing problem, I’ve tried to reinstall this app several times but it always shows my open sign on AppStore even though I have not installed it on my phone.
Does not work with ios 14.6. Great app. Now useless
I hate it. So annoying and I just hate it
Life-changing vocabularies improvement. I haven’t know what any word means when I was small, I tried to understand what it means, but I didn’t, I ask my mommy to what’s word means, I didn’t ask her much, and I learned another dictionary once, until I found right one, I understand the words meaning, because of I search what it means I don’t know, after learning for a lotta months, it improved my vocabulary a lot than I don’t understand anything, thank you for changing my life to better, without this, I wouldn’t never understand what’s that
Difficult to use. Difficult to use cannot make a list of words im learning even though thats why I purchased it
Need better updates. Extremely unsatisfied with the money I paid as soon as I opened it. Old iPhone resolution and terrible user interfaces for a $4 app in 2020!!!
lack IPA?. Please add IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet) for the next update. Thanks
At update?. HI, this is the only app that I paid for but why you don’t update the app?!!
Great app that needs an update. Very useful! However, it needs to be updated to fix bugs. The last update was 6 years ago..
Not working with new iOS system. Please update the app 😭
Not working on iPad. The app does not work or display properly on iPad.
Purchase the app! No regrets. Loveeee this app! 10/10
Not working anymore with the newest iOS. This APP didn’t update in the last 7 years and it is not working anymore under iOS 14.5. Could someone please update this software? Thanks.
Black screen. Always half black screen on my iPad.
No update. At this moment, it’s 6 years that this app is not updated. It has a huge bezel on my iPhone XR screen. It’s just designed for a small screen iPhone.
App unavailable. Unable to use the app after new iOS update.
Update - a missing word in App’s history ??. Hasn’t been optimized for larger screen iPhones because there hasn’t been an update in last 4 years.
Awesome. Love this app. I don’t like many apps but this one is awesome. Though would be great to be able to use it offline.
Horrible. Display issue Fix!
App is working. App is not working with iPhone 7 plus.
Great app, but I prefer to avoid it. This is a great app as a dictionary that I rarely use. Why? I prefer practicing the lists I’ve made on their website. For some reason, the developers of the app have actively avoided adding the most basic functionality: Let me add words to my lists! Simple as that! Why do I only get the option on the website? Every few months I open the app, hoping they have finally added this feature, but no.
Garbage (literally). The app is drastically out of date, Apple advises it is going to be incompatible with future versions of iOS, and evidently it’s incompatible with the *current* version of iOS as well, considering it keeps rejecting the verification word at sign-up, notwithstanding it is the exact word the app is telling me to type. Honestly, Apple should remove this app from its platform.
Do not purchase in 2021. As the developer has not updated this in years. It is no longer compatible to current devices. Paid for nothing.
Needs work. I love their site & decided to purchase their app in order to see what it offered. Some problems: - it’s not tailored to mobile correctly, or, at least, not to iPhone plus. The fonts are huge - there’s no navigation button. By this, I mean: if you select a list, and from there go to a word, there’s no “go back” button to return to the list - figures there’d be more features available especially for $4...
⭐️. Thank you for updating the app! Now I can use it with iOS 15
Half black screen trouble. Having a display problem with half of the screen shows black by using an iPad pro.
Not bad, but still glitchy. It was not letting me learn the word every time I clicked the button. It only said “unable to load word” that doesn’t make sense, so now the ranks and the streak and everything doesn’t work. Other then that, I guess it’s fine, but I wish you could add pictures into the explanation part. That would help me understand. I can’t say this app is good, but it’s not bad, if all you want is to learn your words.
Can’t sign in.. Can’t sign up. Who do I get my money back?
6 years and no update - June 2020. It’s baffling and sad.
Good app. This is a powerful tool to study English. Perfect explanation and option to study. If I had improved something, I would have created option to add words to learning set from search. It would be really useful. Regards.
Why does this app continually try to install every time I install a different app??. Why does this app continually try to install every time I install a different app??
This is a really good app.. I’ve had this app for years, and it is always fun to play when i’m not doing anything. the definitions are really good, using analogies and examples to explain complex words and you can learn any word you want! Really great idea for expanding your vocabulary and learning new words.
Great app!. Great app to improve your vocabulary and define words. It’s quick, super easy to use, and very, very useful!
brilliant. excellent
Best app for learning advanced vocabulary. There are many apps, but this one is by far the best guide in the wild and daunting jungle of complicated terms of English language. It’s target audience is probably school children (as an adult it’s weird to read a word description with examples involving mom and dad) but there are myriad of things I still don’t know, although my level is C1. A lot of games are additional bonus. All the best, please continue our important job
Does not work with 14.5.1. Do not get the app. It does not work right now.
Not very good. The app is out of date and doesn’t fit modern screens. I could live with that, but it just doesn’t work very good. The first word I tried to “learn more of” told me it couldn’t be added to that list. Don’t waste your time.
Please update the app to the recent iOS version. It is not usable currently July 21, 2021
Fantastic. Can’t believe this is free
Love it!. I use it all the time!
Decent app. Way to many bugs issues.
App issues. Just bought the app for my new iPad Pro and it’s just a blank screen. Waiting for support. Not impressed
Do not buy it!!!!! Keep crashing!!!!. You tap the lookup and it keep crashes
No updates on 6 years. Guys come on bring on an update App needs update to work
Amazing App, would love better iOS Visuals. I am astounded at how well Vocab.com is set up and works to help improve your vocabulary. I have been using it for a few years now, but have found the app to be quite visually unappealing as opposed to the website. Would love to see this have a more app-cantered design rather than feel like they took the code for the website and just barely adapted it to make Vocab.com also work as an app. Bottom-line: an amazing tool, could be visually better. Thanks!
Update the app. Please update the app, as in future versions of IOS it will not be supported
IphProMax.—Ask 4 too much info.-Signed in. IphProMax.—After I bought the app ask for too much info.—By no means, there is any information about signing after you buy the app.—It ask for first name, surname, Birthday and more.— This should be optional if anyone wants to subscribe.—Otherwise, there should be an option to skip and use the dictionary.— Why so much information is required.— I bought the app but I cannot use it if I don’t subscribe & provide personal info.-😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
Stopped working after IOS upgrade. Iphone says "developer of this application must update its app."

Show my Class. I’m enjoying the app a lot! However, I do have a suggestion/request. I would love for the app to have access to the class I’m in and my assignments instead of having the feature just on the computer, given that customers paid for the app on the phone. It would improve the app greatly to have an option to see the class I’m in and my personal rank in the class. Thanks!
Very Limited words!!!. You cannot add many words to study list. Most words I study I cant add them! Only limited words can be added to study list. The app is super buggy and doesnt connect either with facebook or wherever it's trying to connect me through to start working... because of login errors I loose on my valuable tome I could use learning words... the app wouldn't run. It's definitely developed by some lamers... I got a new phone and all the progress was lost because it won't let me login through Facebook for some reason... this app is not reliable for long term... too many limits or restrictions... Very scant vocabulary app. Try looking simple words like laterigrade... the app doesnt have it... it lacks many words and you cant add a lot of existing ones to study list the app wont let you. You cant lookup or add many common study words. The app does a good job teaching words it has but those are not sufficient types of words I'm looking to learn... Here's an example... lookup a word: OPUSCULE (minute labor) The app wouldn't help you study the vocabulary entry...
Disappointing. Requires an account. If you close the app you have to log in again. Seriously? Just to look up a word. It seems geared towards basic vocabulary. The definitions of more complex or specialized language are generally lacking. The vocabulary lists are a great idea, but again, I was hoping for more than a few words from a random chapter from of a book (however good the book). A lot of nice elements. The visual design and programming are nice, but it is not a serious vocabulary application.
Great game to play casually. As others have said, it may not be the optimal learning tool for a student/education looking for certain word lists and a form to track their learning . But it certainly is a fun and effective for adults looking to diversify their everyday vocabulary. Very easy to play at a few seconds at a time. It has a progress report every 10 words so you’ll when you had a decent full.
Great App! It's addictive!. I look forward to "playing" with this app in my free time (and I'm learning new words as well). My one concern is that at least one word can be seen as "political" in nature. People who are against immigration are NOT xenophobic. The association of xenophobia with being against immigration is inappropriate. This example is showing intolerance for the rights of other people to have their own views if they are different from your own. Please revise it!
Great tool with some glitches to fix. The tool is great for vocabulary expantion but app needs fixes. Some words for example don't have the option to "start learning this word" not sure why. Also a list upload failed on me several times before I was able to save. It would be nice if the selected words could be practiced "off line", the tool does not work without wi-fi. I will continue using the tool hoping that the issues will be fixed shortly.
Beware! You’ll embarrass yourself!. I’m saddened to say the write ups to go along with each word in this app are cute, but extremely misleading! The actual definitions given in the app when you go to the specific word aren’t so bad, but if you use new words the way this app would have you believe you’ll look like an idiot to anyone who actually know the way these words are usually used. It’s really a shame; unfortunately I have to say this app would be drastically improved if it stuck to normal definitions and more usage examples. Until that happens though, don’t buy it!
Wonderful, but not very useful.. This app is a well-designed, wonderful tool, except that it becomes absolutely worthless in any practical sense after you use it for a while. I've advanced to a level that gives words that are almost all completely impractical for day-to-day usage. I don't want to advance to an ever-more arcane level; I want to stay super-sharp with a level of vocabulary that's useful to me on a day-to-day basis. This app doesn't give me that option. Please let me select my level and let me stay there for as long as I'd like instead of presuming that I want words at an ever-increasing level of difficulty. As it is, this app has become useless to me.
Fun. I have been trying to improve my vocabulary due to my lack of reading throughout many years. This app makes learning new words fun and interesting (gives facts and stories of the word). However, I have only one complaint. Every time I switch out of the app for any reason, the app ends up freezing. That is to say, it’s annoying closing out the app and restarting. Just a pet peeve of mine I don’t know about someone else.
Cons/Pros. Some of the sentences are so wordy! It’s annoying! The source can give you a hint at the definition. Some of the sentences are taken out of context (I’m thinking of one from the New York Times specifically) and can mislead you. For example, it said something like “finally a mayor that is___” and the answer was diffident, which means, why.. The word “finally” leads you to believe it’s going to be a word describing a good quality for a mayor. I love how well this app teaches you each word. It’s like someone is teaching you and not like you’re just looking up definitions.
Excellent. I’ve used this app for years now, and it’s been a great resource for me. I remember in my growing up years and needing to learn a word wasn’t easy. Had to go find the Webster dictionary and alphabetically look up or find the word and its definition. Was alot of work that way. Therefore I have a great appreciation for being able to carry my own dictionary with me every day! Thank you Vocabulary!
Still Needs Polishing. This app covers all the essential functions a vocabulary app should have, and its definitions are succinct and precise. However, a few issues need attention: 1. The pages occasionally freeze, and lagging occurs from time to time. 2. Progress tracking should be adjustable, allowing users to reset or revisit a vocabulary list multiple times for reinforcement. 3. The audio button sometimes does not respond when tapped.
Perfect explanation and description of words. This is a perfect app to memorize using your imagination since it gives examples and similarities for the words you already know, so when you associate these new words and the words you already know, it is easier to remember. This app made it happen, I'm very happy to use it and suggest everyone, very easy to understand theme and interface.
I never pay for apps...but I paid for this one!. I am an avid roleplayer and I am constantly looking for ways to improve my writing for such. The website has been immensely helpful--and now the app gives me a great way to occupy my time in a far more worthwhile endeavor than little app games. A whole new world has been opened, and every time I open this app, I am learning new and intriguing words!
Nearly perfect for vocab building. This app has an amazing design, both in it's aesthetics and it's teaching philosophy. It's not drilling words and definitions like a flash cards but rather haves you read passages to ask questions about its meaning. My only gripe with the app is that I'm learning from a list of over 600 words and in the last few days that I've been using it, not one word has been repeated. Though there are options to see "words I'm learning" and "words I've played,"both options list all 600 words, even if I have even seen them yet. Currently, the only way I've found to concentrate on a limited set of words is to manually find the words under the Play option and press "Focus more on this word." Also, I'd like the manipulate the lists as other users have stated. Again, the app is great and I'll continue using it, but I wish it could implement my suggestions.
Pick your own. Just upgraded to IOS 14.6 and the app won’t work. I hope they fix this soon. I love that this app allows you to look up words that you're interested in, that you've stumbled upon reading somewhere and then add that to your "want to learn list." those get added to the words you are being quizzed on. So you can customize your learning.
Great app, but needs a little more developer attention. This app is excellent for learning words in a meaningful way because you get more of an explanation than a definition for each word. The words are better contextualized than in a dictionary, so you get a better grasp of how real people use words. However, the app is a little buggy, and the UI needs a little updating. I hope the developer will give this app the maintenance it deserves over time!
Favorite app of the year. I’m sure that I am outing myself as a major nerd but this is, by far, my favorite app of the year. Whenever I am reading a book, watching a movie, or listening to a podcast and I hear a word that I am not familiar with, I quickly add it to my vocab app. Whether they meant to or not, the app is aligned with best practices for long-term memory recall and learning. In my opinion, it’s a great way to expand your vocabulary and increase learning overall.
Finally!!!. Been waiting so long for this! So excited! Haven't really tried it out yet, but these guys are pros, so I am confident that it will be nothing short of great. Edit: Some minor flaws keeps me from rating this app with five stars. Namely: • Tapping top of screen doesn't scroll to top of page • Can't add words to, or edit your own lists • When reviewing a list there isn't a way to get back to the search result of lists • When viewing lists you can scroll left/right • Search field doesn't have an X button to clear the search field • No visual feedback when tapping the speaker icon • A list showing your search history would be great Most of the above are minor issues and nitpicks and hopefully in future versions some of them will be addressed.
It should improve. Overall, I’m satisfied with this app featuring clear, understandable explanation and test-based play. One thing I found it particularly inconvenient is that I can’t choose to play the word I’m checking in the dictionary. There is no option for that. You have to play a list. I hope it provides more options like it’s online version.
Great UI design & two features need improvement. I really like the design of having the queried words in uppercase, the font, and the easy-to-understand word definitions. It’s incredibly convenient for someone learning English. This is truly the best dictionary app I've used so far. Two areas need improvement: 1. When I want to add a word to my learning list, it seems I have to wait for the ‘start learning this word’ option to pop up, and there’s no indication of when this will happen. I have to keep waiting on the page. I hope there will be a button to easily add a word. 2. The pronunciation playback is very slow, taking about 4-5 seconds each time before the sound is heard.
Add an Option for Making a List in the App. From what i’ve found so far, there is no way to make a list in the app and I have to make it online, and then go back in the app to use it. If you could add an option to make lists in the app that would be great. Or if there is a way to make lists already could you make it easier?
Can’t escape blank screen when opening app. Hi, I’ve had some weird bugs but this is the first time opening an app and it just doesn’t work at all. I’ll open the app and am met with the tritone layout but each section is just blank so it’s just three big color blocks on the screen and that’s it. No words, no icons to tap or anything. Tried restarting the app, reinstalling the app a few times, restarting the iPad, nothing seems to work. The website is cool which is what enticed me to buy the app unfortunately there’s nothing to use so it was a bit of a waste of 3 dollars. I’m sure it’s amazing when it works.
Amazing source for improving linguistics. Very intuitive app that helps users easily understand words that they come across. Only suggestions for this app is that it swipes to the next word over way too easily, and I wish there was a large button to be able to clear the search bar rather than always having to hold down on the backspace button. Other than that, I would gladly raise this to a 5 star review if these minimal changes could be carried out.
Not up to date. It seems the app hasn’t been updated for years (6 years, the App Store says.) Some new features that I found on the website version is not available in the app. The Lists feature is broken in the app. It’s better to just stay with the web version, though there are ads. If the list Lists feature is fixed (if I can search for a list that I want which I can do it on the website), I’d be happy to give full rating.
Stupidities App and Website. Working on my vocabulary and spelling, I collect vocabulary from newspapers to learn, before this app i had to search every word in dictionary and it took much of my time just to find the word and then lean, but now I only upload my last to this app and this allows me to learn easily with gaming with fun. It save me a lot of time and energy without boredom. Lots of love to the developers . Thank you .
Excellent app. This is a great app that offers plenty of examples to show how each word is used in different contexts. It provides sentences for each word using examples from the news and media to help learn proper word usage. You can build your own lists or find and add lists created by other users too. This is great for anyone studying for the SAT, GRE, or other exams, or jus for avid students of the English language.
Annoying. This is a good vocabulary app and has a lot of good features, but I do not like some of the ways it teaches. When it gives you a word it to learn all of the choices are different words that aren't used very much by many people. Therefore if you are younger or don't have a very good vocabulary, it is hard for you to compare, and some of the answers that it gives you just really don't make sense. This is annoying to me because this sight is for inexperienced people and these little effects make it harder to learn and master the words.
Fantastic app 😁, however 😳.... Great purchase. Rarely do I ever pay for dictionaries but this app has an excellent array of examples. However since the release of iOS 10 I've had a bug within the app that doesn't allow me to scroll up or down. I deleted and reinstalled the app and the problem remains. I emailed the developer and he responded quickly but I have yet to see an update. This is the only thing holding me back from giving it a five star rating. Otherwise, fantastic for expanding your vernacular 👍🏽
Can’t create your own list via the app. I have given a 1 star rating as of today simply because they don’t give you the ability to create your own list from the app. I think that would have been an obvious move from an app developer. Maybe I’m wrong and there is a way to create your own list from the app but I’m ignorant to that so far. Another simple but frustrating part of this app is that you don’t get the ability to clear a word from the search bar, instead you have to erase it by hitting backspace, this is tremendously frustrating to me. I want a refund on this app for sure. Just stick to the desktop version.
Good - BUT 2 big problems.. I like the structure of the app, the clear definitions, and the repetition of each word until you've mastered it. However, while learning words on one list, it starts testing you on odd words you've never seen before. It's weird...and highly annoying. The result is that it takes a long time to master the words you really want to learn, and this is a real disincentive to using the app. In addition, perhaps 80% of the sample sentences are from the NY Times, Time, and Slate. Are there no other sources to draw from? If these problems were corrected, I would give the app 5 stars.
Great app w room for improvement. Overall I like this app, it's a great tool to build vocabulary. However, I found the words chosen for me to be of little use. In the beginning, the words were pedestrian but after a couple rounds they quickly became esoteric and unnecessarily difficult. In order to make the app useful I had to look up interesting words on the internet and build a custom list. I would like to see a feature that matches words a user finds interesting to pre-built lists.
Love using this app but .... I love using this app. I'm well past a time in my life where I need an app like this to study for a college entrance exam. I just want to improve and extend my vocabulary. This app is a delightful way of accomplishing this. I would say; however, that some of the words seem geared to these types of tests and that these words would be useful in the "real" world. Even so, I assume this app has the same effect on me that video games have on a younger crowd: I seem to get caught up in it and cannot stop playing it. I think that's a big compliment.
Great, Needs Work. I highly enjoy the memorable paragraphs accompanying each vocabulary word; this is an effective setup I have never before seen. The easy to use search tab and quirky achievements are fun, too. However, once I master a word, I tend to forget it. I highly recommend that periodically a question referring to a mastered word is asked, and perhaps a built-in study list that consists of just mastered words should be implemented as well. Good job, and keep it up!
The Best Dictionary. Definitions given are like someone trying to explain a word to you. Explanations are great and sometimes fun and so you remember the word later. I love it. Only drawback is that sometimes these kind of thorough explanations are not available for every word and for these only a one sentence definition is given and for these maybe using another dictionary would be better. English is my second language and this is a viewpoint of an ESL learner.
Amazing app, but it could be better!. I really enjoy using this app to improve my vocabulary. I also use it as a dictionary. A thing that would make this app better though is to have the ability to add words to a list. I like that you can click learn this word, but it'd be really amazing to be able to add the word to a list. Also, the dictionary seems pretty incomplete; there are lots of missing words that could be found on the online version. It'd be wonderful to see the aforementioned things implemented into the app!
Pulchritudinal!!. Wow...did I just say that? My wife and I will play this on long road trips...getting one point for each right answer... the first one to ten points wins...you make up your own prize... ours was usually money to spend on something frivolous. This app has made reading more enjoyable, I do wish I had more opportunities to use these words in everyday language.
Nice.... This app has definitely expanded my vocabulary but we need an update!! There's a glitch that won't let me add certain words to my list, and prevents me from swiping back to a previous word in the dictionary. Also REALLY wish there was offline access because otherwise it's almost completely useless. What's the point of a "high speed dictionary" that you can't even use on certain occasions? Really just defeats the purpose.
Can't add words to your lists. I like this app but it's lacking in features the website has. You can't look up words and add them to your list. You can look at an already created list but you can't add to it. When playing, you can't add words to a list you created. Also, the lists you create don't account for stopping duplicates. You can add the same word twice and it won't stop you. That's more an issue with the desktop site. Please fix the list functions in the app!!!
Best app for vocabulary ever!. This app is very productive. You can put lists on and it make school easy because you just have to put vocabulary words and make a list. You get a ton of little badges every time you master a word or something like that. You get a point on questions and you use that to increase your rank. There are a ton of word lists pre made and there are spelling bees and jams and it is also competitive.
A must for anyone prepping for the GRE. This app really does deliver fast results when looking up words. Love that you can quiz yourself on word comprehension-- it's exciting to high five yourself when you realize you are actually learning and understanding the words in context to the statements provided. Best part, sentences pulled from current news articles/opinion pieces that include the word you are looking up, is where I truly learn how to comprehend the words I'm wanting learning.
Addictive app!. This app is highly addictive, it’s fun to learn new words! English is my second language so this is a great vocabulary builder. I love that you can look up words and add these to your learning list. However, some words won’t pull up and some words can be looked up but not added to the learning list (that’s why I gave 4 stars instead of 5). The interface is appealing and intuitive and the app is stable. Highly recommend this app if you would like to improve your vocabulary in a fun way!
No longer even compatible. Even though I love their website and have been a long user of it, the app is terrible. Ive reached out the the support teams multiple times to upgrade the app so that it’s compatible with new iOS versions and devices and they’ve said this is not on the top of their prio. IOS 14 has stopped supporting this app and now it’s just a waste for me to even have this app on my phone. Having some background in app development, it’s doesn’t take a LOT to update an app, so this is quite frustrating.
vocabulary painlessly expanded. I’ve started hitting down words I don’t recognize and put them into the app when I have time. It feeds them back to me and tests me, and it makes sure I really have it down by giving it to me several times. I’ve already learned so much and hardly spent any time on it. And i can earn points for my school with every word I master! I’ve gotten at least three people on it already.
Magnifique!. All you simple Cretans need to quit complaining. This is the best app for vocabulary you'll ever find. You simply CAN'T get any better! It is true that after a certain period you become addicted to the pleasure of getting a question right. I still feel the dopamine rushing through my body from a previous round! Also, if you get bored, in-app you should try out Jim Burke's Academic Vocabulary list. Super fun!
Great but..... Best app I've found for looking up words, saving then words, and improving vocabulary. But there are some words it doesn't have and there are some little things, possibly glitches, that are inexcusable and frankly annoying. For example, copy and paste appears to be disabled. This is an essential feature in a dictionary app and should work flawlessly. Even with these issues, I still use this as my main dictionary/vocabulary improvement app so definitely get it if that's what you're looking for.
Vocabulary Enhancer. I’ve always enjoyed this app as a means for broadening your vocabulary, the streaks and badges make it rather rewarding as well. If I had to pick out one thing I don’t like, it’s that for some reason the website seems easier to use, but that probably just takes some getting used to.
Make an update for the newer apple products. I can’t help but notice that this apps program does not encompass my iPhones full screen, it does not fill the whole screen and leaves a half inch of blackness on bottom and top. I assume this is because this is an older app and you haven’t made any updates for the newer phones. If you’d be so kind I’d like to see an update but other than that it’s a fantastic app to use for vocabulary. This app does a great job at explaining what something means and it makes it fun.
Best Investment. I initially gave 5-stars, but recently the App has become buggy. It keeps showing there is no internet connection, even when I am connected to Wifi. I hope they improve it quickly. $2.99 for this App is the best investment one can make. I loved their website but it was hard to make oneself go to their website to learn vocabulary, now with this easy access you can replace your time wasting games and get same reward while making yourself smarter! Thank you for bringing this app to our mobile devices.
Almost perfect. This app is very detailed. The challenges are great. I like that you can look up words and not loose your spot on the challenges. It's helped me a lot increase my vocabulary. The only thing I would ever add to the challenges is multi fill in the blank questions. Some career exam now have test with multi fill in the blank off a full paragraph. That would help just take it one degree further. It's still perfect just the way it is.
