TE quality down the drain, it has become a propaganda tool. For the past 10 years I have witnessed TE’s quality being increasingly compromised by irrelevant, poorly researched articles and misleading, sensationalist titles. It came as an extra disappointment to see that it has now turned into a mouthpiece for NATO. Nothing to do with journalism here - I cancelled my subscription.

Works well. The app was once rather buggy, but it has improved and now works seamlessly. The content is what you would expect from The Economist: free market cheerleading, China bashing, arguing for Europe, the environment, and free speech. Overall solid and well written articles, often with tongue in cheek.

Login problem. I am able tog into my economist account from my browser but not from the app. I type my log in details and the page blinks for about two seconds then asks me to subscribe even though I have purchased an account.

App fails to open - both iPhone and iPad. Disappointing bug for quite an expensive subscription...

A fundamental piece of information. I have always considered The Economist as a reference on many political and scientific matters. It is extremely convenient to have it an easily accessible app.

Delivering on the mission. I have been a reader of The Economist for 20 years. I can only congratulate the team in charge for delivering everyday the mission of its founder. One question: i have been training my children on reading The Economist by sending them chosen articles tuned to their areas of interest from time to time. The full issue is too heavy and not worth for them. But the app blocks them the reading after a few. What can you think of to progressively raise interest of our students to The Economist ? Downgraded audio version. I have returned to the Legacy app because this audio version is so bad. I’m unable to scroll through the table of contents, only sections. If I’ve stopped an article part way through, it will sometimes restart playing it from the beginning. If I turn off my screen, the audio shuts off as well. And to top it off, on Saturday, it automatically starts the new issue even if I’m still on the previous one (yes, it occasionally happens). The content is great as usual, be the listening experience is atrocious. It’s a daily fight. It’s almost as if you don’t want to have listeners.

In one word : Wonderful !. All the news worldwide in one app ! I enjoy the paper version too, but with the app and the subscription to both, I enjoy the fresh news of the day when I take my breakfast every morning, and all day long too with the best point of view (to my mind), so this is just Wonderful !!!

The worst app on my phone. The economist is literally the worst app on my phone, the old app was much better. It is painfully slow and downloading an edition to read offline takes an eon even on a fast wifi connection. I like to read the weekly edition, but each time I pause reading to do something else the app jumps (slowly) back to the home page when I return, which is very irritating.

Espace consommé. Comment est il possible d effacer les anciens numéros qui restent chargés dans l appli ? ( à part décharger et recharger l appli)

All i need in one application. Dear economist thank you for bringing all my news needs in one place free of soap like news. Please bring the podcasts library in here too. This might also lead to the podcast editors to avoid repeating subjects amongst your platforms/economist voice channels. And then maybe podcasts can be without ads in here as i assume this app is only available to subscribers. Great how you improved the menu for the audio week edition.

Why did you drop the subtitles ?. I enjoy listening The Economist every week using the old app. I would definitely grant ***** for the contents. Unfortunately, a major feature has been dropped in the new version: the subtitles (or secondary titles) that give you a hint about the content of each article. Example in this week’s edition: New App: “Buttonwood / FULL TILT”. In the Good Old App: “Buttonwood / FULL TILT / Why the bond market has become jumpier. “ In the good old app, I know what the subject is and I can decide whether I should select that article for my playlist or not. In the knew App, I have no clue and I need to go through the cumbersome process of opening each article to decide. As a matter of fact, the new app is useless for that very specific reason. What a shame! Please… fix it!

This app doesn’t work anymore.. Immediate crash when you want to open it ...

Great complement to the print version. I usually don’t enjoy reading digital newspapers. But lately, as I haven’t been able to take the time to read the economist in its print version, I’ve found the app to be very handy, easy to navigate and to read. I don’t feel like I get no value from my paid subscription if I don’t get to read the print version anymore. I can do a bit of both and that’s great!

Ad makes the app not straight forward. The app is pleasant except the newly added ad section incorporated in each article on the app.

Mind opener. Great tool to open your mind on the World. It’s a valuable investment when you take the time to regularly read the articles. Strongly recommend even though it’s a bit expensive.

Not working. As I have recently changed my smartphone, I cannot activate my subscription in the App anymore. When I try to do so, I receive a notification saying there is an error.

Awesome, as always. Best newspaper has the best CX app with night mode and podcast audio. Can’t expect anything better! Maybe more online conferences from journalists about a topic?

Listening. Excellent to ear and read at the same time.

Impossible to select a word to translate it. In the last version, it is impossible to copy a word in order to easily translate it with another app. I think this feature is very important for foreigners. If it does not come back quickly, I may cancel my subscription.

Great but could be greater. Being able to listen to articles is great but if you close the app the queue you spent time building is lost. I wish you could download your queue and listen to it on and off

Excellent quality content. Highly recommend it for people who are fed up of rubbish free newsfeeds, good quality content can’t be free!

Bravo continuad así. I enjoy reading the magasine a lot, it’s feeling near any place in the world and be able to understand not only social tendencies, but political and ecological issus. Now it comes to new big health issue. What else ? I feared Coronavirus would modify in some way the reception of the edition, but it’s been even better as I have started to read articles in the mobile application. If there is one thing my French-Spanish family agrees on is that The Ec it’s a best choice , event my daughter, 20 years old, follows it weekly at her economic science school.

Audio function great, but.... It would be better still if the app could tick off articles as I finish listening to them. That way it wouldn't re-play what I've heard previously when I'm walking and unable to select a different article.

Great content, app leaves much to be desired. Articles are great, the app much more pleasant than the older one, but glaring omissions remain. AirPlay support would be crucial for an app with this much audio content, so we can play it on our speakers and various devices. Since it’s easily supported with official iOS APIs why not just enable it? Wishful thinking perhaps, but CarPlay support with Siri would be magnificent.

Subscription. Great content. Strange that I need to subscribe again as I have already paid through July 2023… Something is wrong with the app!

Relevant. Articles are always relevant, timely, factual and elegantly written, a delight to read. If it was my last money, i would spend it on a Economist subscription

Decent content, but inevitable data hog. The Economist has excellent journalism. However, inexplicably, this app does not allow you to avoid automatic background downloads, so if you have an iPad you rarely use, it will still download data using your WiFi (or mobile data, if you don’t disable that) every week. With more and more people using mobile WiFi, this can be annoying. There is a workaround in the general iPad settings, where one can disable background activity for the app, but that setting is not available inside the app itself, and I’m not sure one can trust it.

Frustrating update. As the previous review writer, I could not access my digital content because I was a "print only" subscription, which is untrue (this is my 25th year as subscriber and I went digital as soon as possible many years ago). After a number of exchanges I finally got my digital back, but what a distastrous app. I can't seem to download for offline and audio downloads take m i n u t e s... t o l o a d s l o w l y.

High quality content, UX/UI needs a bit more love. It’s almost perfect. The content is super high quality, but the app could make it so much better / easy to consume and share : - better list layout on iPad - faster navigation between sections - native, zoomable, interactive charts - better sharing of content (ability to send a quote or even full text easily) - better history - personalization of sections

Great content mediocre app design.. Much worse then the alternative Legacy app. Impossible to download the audio with an average broadband. The support does not react to complaints.

Audio takes ages to launch. Following an update of the app. “Stream audio” not an option anymore. And “play audio” just takes several minutes before it starts. Terribly frustrating

Never subscribe to a magazine through iTunes. I purchased a 12 months subscription through iTunes and I lost access after 5 months (“unable to restore purchases”). I am on a call every week with the support team and they have absolutely no solution for me: they won’t fix the issue and they won’t reimburse me for the service they don’t provide. Unacceptable!!

Very good but... I find the Economist to have in general excellent quality journalism in terms of accuracy and objectivity. However, too many articles seem to stop just as they’re getting going, the author either runs out of ideas or the article is deliberately reduced. Better to have less quantity to be sure of the quality. Fyi, these days I find the NYT, Washington Post and Le Point (I live in France) to be the nearest in quality. Foreign Affairs is ahead in terms of depth, while the Guardian has great coverage of the big events of the day.

Great content, audio is perfectible. Content is first class albeit sometimes a bit long. I often listen to the audio edition and it is really frustrating. If you pause, the app cannot just continue, it is like restarts, loads the whole thing, it is slow. Difficult to inderstand how the team cannot get it right... (ios, most recent version as of Dec 2019)

App with serious limitations. I've been a subscriber to the economist for several years now (paper and/or digital) and I always enjoyed reading it. I would like to emphasize that the following review is about the app and not the contents of the newspaper. For me, the major annoyance with the app is the download and offline-reading of economist issues: I have tried to download past issues, as these seem get lost after every major upgrade of the app. Beyond a certain number of downloaded issues, additional downloads are virtually impossible since additional downloads do not complete, which is often accompanied by crashes of the app. In addition, the opening of older issues (more than appr. 6 months) requires an active Internet connection, whether they have been downloaded or not. This does not make any sense to me. For all these reasons, I have switched back to the Legacy application which does allow for the download of back issues (at least back to some point in time in 2017). I like to be able to access purchased issues, paper or digital, without restrictions (and irrespective of whether I have an active subscription or not ) but it seems like the current app is gradually morphing to "online only", whatever that means for the future.

Expresso news, continuous infused news. Hi, I’m a ‘paper copy’ subscriber of the economist and I receive the weekly news since years... I took the electronic Of ‘The Economist’ and I was pleased to see how complementary they are ... - Expresso news are the ones which give you in less than 10 bullet points, the way world headlines... - For what I call ‘continuous infused news’ you can through search display past articles dedicated to a specific subject ! - On top, some of the articles are avail both ‘in written AND ‘podcast’ So I do believe both paper and electronic versions WILL coexist as they are complementary and the app version is easy to ‘take in hands’ and navigation is intuitive!

Great app. This app is a refined version of your typical kiosk app. Sleek design and great functionalities. It’s not designed like the website but it’s more practical this way.

Poor programming. I do not understand the positive ratings for this app. For me, this is the only audio app that doesn’t manage background downloads of new editions, fails at streaming on Lock Screen and constantly needs to redownload content. Yea, the economist is a fantastic magazine. But it’s digital content is poorly programmed and fails at the most basic of tasks. I have given up hope that they will ever produce an app that works

How to improve your brain. Read the espresso from the Economist early in the morning, and the weekly Economist at the end of the week. Exercise your judgment and test your opinions by reading or listening to detailed and accurate information about the world. The best cure to maintain flexibility and openness of mind.

Bring word look up back!. The editorial contents is, as always, excellent. But it is currently impossible to select a word and to look it up. Instead the app surprisingly offers to copy the whole article. I'm strongly of the opinion that being able to look words up again would be vastly more useful (for education and readability, but also because copying the article for those who might need it would still be possible). I wish the User Experience (UX) was held to the same standards as the contents.

No download.. The audio version sports a fast talking woman using some regional accent. Very unsmart. But proof of political correctness.

Shows ads even for subscribers. Paid for subscription and I couldn’t believe that there are also ads within articles!

Freezes a lot ; barely usable !. I am long user of the app but recent updates make it barely usable, freezing a lot. Very frustrating. I have an iPhone 13.

Slow and crashes. Amazing. For as long as I remember, the app is very slow in loadong, charging an article or listing audio. Sometimes, the app crashes when navigating in it. I have an iPhone 13. Not that old. Always updated. The content is great. Will you fix this please ?

One of the best magazin app. The Economist app is really very well done and makes the reading very enjoyable.

Crash before opened. The app always quits unexpectedly. I cannot even open it, for that matter.

Slow and buggy. I have NEVER seen a slower app on iOS. It takes literal seconds for a click to register. The app resets back to the home screen when you have the audacity to use another app for a few seconds.

Horrible cancellation process. Making it so hard for readers to cancel their subscription is beneath a reputable paper like this.

The last update is a nightmare !. The last update of the app is catastrophic !!! It is a shame. I am always logged out. The text selection is twisty. And to listen the article became a nightmare. Éditing the queue is impossible !!!!

I give up. I’ve cancelled my longstanding subscription. The publishers know the app is a disgrace and keep promising a new debugged version but the months go by and nothing changes.

Most bugged audio feature ever. Audio is consistently bugged across releases. Is asking that you test it before releasing too much? Update @Laura developer (no option to contact directly): yes the latest release (3.06-2) is actually the worst. Tried all the troubleshooting, clearing cache, reinstalling app etc. audio always gets stuck for ~5m on “loading”.

Broken Update. Last update broke the app, which will not open even after much patience and several restarts.

Poor customer relations. My subscription was canceled without any notice. It is now impossible for me to pay the outstanding invoice to get it back. Very poor customer experience.

No more 4 free articles from the magazine. Seems like they are getting too greedy! The new app doesn’t allow readers to read 4 free articles from the magazine anymore. Everything is paid except some not so interesting articles which they make it look like free add ons.

Subscribed yet can’t access content. I’m being asked for a CRN number that is not provided when purchasing a subscription through the app to activate digital access. Frustrating and idiotic.
