“Great app, excellent journalism! The Economist is wonderful. The content is interesting and relevant and the reporting is superlative. Equally impressive is the drive to stay relevant by presenting media in multiple formats, from print to podcasts and short videos.”

“Impeccable journalism with an app to match. The Economist doesn’t need my endorsement of the quality of their journalism. It speaks for itself. Rather, I’ll comment that their app is well-designed and refreshing to use…I love being able to easily download entire editions, listen to articles with real narrators and search for past articles.”

Great app but with room to improve. I really enjoy the app, but there are two features that are missing for me: 1. Automatic download of audio when on WiFi 2. “Playlist” of articles visible in car infotainment when listening via Bluetooth or CarPlay (this is how I consume almost 90% of the articles in the issue)

Some improvements needed. The app is fine, but not stellar. The main issue I face is that’s it’s obviously some reskinned web browser. Swiping between articles or scrolling though the edition often ends up in a stuck screen where you have to wait a few seconds for the UI to catch up (hello 1990s). Scrolling an article is also laggy. What’s the point of having the latest speedy iPhone when you face these kinds of apps… Another minor irritation so that the downloaded editions don’t expire, meaning you have to manually go in an delete them when you realise a month’s worth of editions is suddenly swelling the app to 17GB. The content itself is wonderful, which is the only reason I put up with this subpar app. Please give make it better!

Widgets. Die App ist eigentlich sehr gut, was mir aber noch fehlt sind Homebildschirm Widgets, dann wäre sie wirklich perfekt.

Content good as always, but App UX to be improved. Compared to the previous app the location of last reading is not remembered. That leads to a lot of searching and clicking when reopening the app… Additionally, it would be nice to indicate if an article has already been read. The reason is that some articles are now available earlier than the whole magazine issue. An indicator could avoid confusion and wasted time. Please improve the user friendliness of the app.

Outstanding content, largely good usability. The content of the app is terrific, as you would expect from the Economist. Among other benefits, it's great to be able to hear the stories read by readers who evidently understand the content and know how to pronounce the foreign words and names. The app does a generally good job of making the content conveniently available. I deducted 1 star because the app sometimes shows hard-to-understand and/or unpredictable behaviour in connection with the playing of audio.

App stürzt ab. App ist oft langsam und stürzt während dem Lesen von Artikel regelmäßig ab

Great content vs. Stability issues. Hi everyone, Needless to say that the economist provides profound insights and unmatched analysis of the current global situation. The Economist App, however, has some serious stability issues. I am an iPhone 12 User with iOS 17.6.1. I have troubles with: - selecting a section (e.g. Europe Business / Finance etc.); the selection is only possible if I scroll the item I’d like to click on the horizontal bar to a certain position (somewhere in the middle between the left end and the center of the bar. - scrolling through articles often causes the app to crash. - clicking on a link wtihin an article takes several attempts and causes the app to crash pretty fast, once I managed to get to the linked article. I know that a new app version is being currently tested, but it would be really helpful if you could provide at least some hot fixes for the issues listed above. Thank you in advance asa

Journalismus erster Klasse. Der Economist bietet anspruchsvolle und fundierte Artikel ohne Umschweife, ich bin sehr zufrieden!

Pls no cleaning of audio playlist not yet listened to. Great you finally added enough features to the audio function to make it work — and make me drop the legacy app. One wish: When a new weekly edition is published, last week’s audio queue seems to be erased. Would be much better to persist it (those parts not yet listened to), and let me add audio articles from the new weekly edition to it. Last weeks selection is still valid, just did not get around to listen to it all :—).

Content the best, payment and customer service the worst. Payed for yearly subscription via iPad, didn’t get login credentials for the website, restore purchases on iPhone doesn’t work. One customer service rep claimed website is not included, another claimed its apples fault, a third one suggested that I should buy a second subscription via the website. No ownership, no solutions offered so far. Really disappointed as the magazine and its content is amazing. Could imagine becoming a lifetime subscriber. But not this way. If the issue is not resolved soon I will ask apple for a refund.

Gutes Magazin. Es ist sehr gut.

App ist etwas langsam. Journalismus sehr gut fundiert - recherchiert und unbiased. Nur die App hat einzelne Lags welches korrigiert werden muss

Extremely frustrating and far below what should be The Economists aspiration. Three years later, this comment is unfortunately still true: Over the years, I have lost marked articles many times in updates of this mediocre app. Ripping pages out of the magazine is more reliable and I have gone back to doing that for material I want to keep. The Economist has great content and I love to read it. But the app still has immense room for improvement. I have subscribed to the Economist for two or three decades and am disappointed at this obvious failure to go digital in a competent and engaging manner. Please read this comment and do something!

Annoying moving ads. I have a paid subscription and enjoy the app and journalism a lot. I find the moving ads very annoying however. I see that printed magazines that you buy have ads too but these are not changing every few seconds. It‘s hard to concentrate on the article when there‘s something blinking right next to it the whole time.

Top-Notch Journalism, Horrible App. The Economist iPad was once the epitome of magazine apps. When I was doing consultancy for media companies, I'd always use The Economist app as an example of how a good app should be. Alas, this app is doesn't even deserve one star: it is slow as molasses (on a recent iPad Pro 11"), UI/UX seems to be done by someone whose first job was a torturer, and not having the ability to actually fully download and focus on the issue (which was one of the first great features back then) makes this app totally useless. Just to give one or two examples of horrible UX: 1. why can't I rotate my iPad all four directions with this app? Why only three? You know, it is sometimes really helpful to have the charging-connection top-side while reading The Economist. 2. Why don't you use iPad features such as two-column display? Why just stick to iPhone-mode? Don't you have the budget to add the iPad-features? Questions... I've been an The Economist subscriber since 2001 or so, even keeping my print subscription even though I used the app for actual reading, I am now seriously considering canceling all the of it - print and online, because of how horrible this app is. Please fix it or lose customers!

Content top, App leider schwach. Toller Content. Die Handy-App ist leider unbrauchbar, da sie immer abstürzt

Great app for subscribers, but can still be improved. I use this app almost daily. It is fast and reliable. The content of the Economist is always interesting, relevant and beautifully written. The fifth star will be awarded as soon as the built-in audio player is able to show the remaining listening time as a countdown - instead of just displaying the total length of the article all the time.

Amazing content, but I am missing a PDF Style View. The content is great and the app generally works very well. I do think the audio player is a bit wonky (it seems to take long to load and/or use a lot of power) but it all works fine. What I really really really want is the option to look at the latest issue in a pdf Style, ie the actual Magazin. It doesn’t need to be an exportable pdf (I get the problem) but with the actual magazine, I really like the way you can use your gaze to just read the headlines and a few paragraphs of sections, I am not going to fully read (and you simply can’t get the same effect with it all being “online articles). If that changes, I give the app 5 points (content is 5 points anyways).

Finished audio arrticles missing the red tick. Fantastic magazine and marcelous app. Just recently began using the audio edition more and more. Using it I noticed that only the first heard article from each section is ticked of when finished with a red tick. Would be great if this would occur for every article fully played or is it a bug at my end?

Audio Edition fehlt.

First class. Inhaltlich, sprachlich, technisch Klasse!

Audio Stops Frequently. It seems that using other apps while listening to the audio edition leads to sudden stops of the playback. Even in apps that have no audio function themselves or one which is run on startup. Switching into the Economist app, the App is refreshing (which is not working riding the Berlin U-Bahn or being on the plane) and one has to go the the tab of the current edition, wait for the loading to finish and then start playback once more. As this is one of many issues in a series, I suspect that the Economist app team has some serious QA issue.

Subskription via App does not work. I purchased a subscription via the App and received a receipt and invoice from Apple. However, I never received Login details. I contacted the Economist and they said this problem has to be solved by Apple („ because you got the App from their App Store“). The Economist could not even check whether my email is in their system. Of course, Apple could not help either because they did not programm the App. Apple reimbursed the money for the subsciption. The Economist is really a great magazine. The App and their customer service are not of the same quality.

I will finally murder someone. This „great new app, please use that one - sorry we don’t support the legacy app any more“ makes me more angry than anything else has this year. I listen to the economist weekly, every week, for many hours, as you’d expect with a subscription. No, I don’t want to spend another 10 hours a week also listening to podcasts and whatnot. Who needs that? Who is done with the weekly edition by Monday and then bored? Surely not people who work any job?! And the new apps best feature: every 2nd time you minimize the app by swiping up from the bottom center on your iPhone the app believes that you want to abandon what you were listening to and start over with „the world this week: politics“. It is truly the worst experience I can imagine. If you then navigate back to the article you were listening to, OF COURSE it has forgotten where in the article you were and you can either guess around or listen from the top. Is there anybody who subscribes to the economist and does not hate this new app with a passion!? The legacy app did everything i needed it to do. And well too! Why was I so foolish to ininstall it?!! 😢😢😢😢😢

Excellent Journalism, App improving but not there yet. Dear Economist, I’ve been an avid reader for over 15 years and one of your biggest fans. The latest updates to the App in the last weeks are fantastic and the usability has increased. One big issue remains : when you start reading an article and continue later (without bookmarking it), the last article and position are not auto-saved anymore. For some reason with the lastest major update this feature was removed and is very annoying because you have to open the weekly edition, find the article and then find the last position. This wastes time and takes away the fun part of reading the digital magazine. Please fix this! Thank you Anthony

No functionality when offline. The app suffers from issues that make it unreliable / unusable. When there is no mobile internet reception, it log off and forces me to re-log into my account - which is impossible without internet connection. It is also not possible to fully download audio version -even when the app shows audio is downloaded, it still tries to connect to the internet - making it impossible to listen in areas with limited access to internet like underground metro.

Good, short stories, bad service. Good app with short stories. If you are looking for more background information it’s probably the wrong place. The service is frustrating. No easy way to end subscription. Some poor outsourced workers seem to handle multiple requests at the same time and try to convince you to buy something else. A button would have worked quite well…

Simple, functional, no-nonsense. You can read the weekly editions, you can read the latest articles. You can adjust the font size, you can mark articles you want to read later. The app does what it should: it lets you read The Economist; and it does it well.

Playing audio files. I would enjoy if the audio function would save audio files in the order as I select them. It currently does so the other way around. The last article I want to hear appears first in the list and if I start with the end of the list to hear the article I first selected (and whom I most want to listen to) the audio streaming stops when the last title is finished. Afterwards I need to manually select the next title. This is a bit complicated especially when you are listening to the economist while running or in the go.

Details need fixing. Overall, a quite impressive app as it mostly manages to combine the daily and weekly reporting of The Economist - and the audio versions - under one electronic roof. However, there are still a few bugs lurking here and there. For instance, displaying articles (and yes, I am a subscriber) on my iPad in landscape mode, the right ends of several lines get truncated (1-2 letters missing), resulting in poor readability. This should be fixed soon.

Top Inhalte aber ziemlich katastrophale App. Ich bin seit Jahren begeisterter Leser des Economist aber leider stürzt die App andauernd ab, reagiert nicht mehr oder lädt extrem lange. Sehr frustrierend.

The audio feature is the best!. From all the news apps I use, The Economist gives me the most for the money. There are brief articles, more in depths articles and analytics. There is an audio feature that lets me listen to articles, while I walk my dog. The app is easy to use, it looks pleasant, and the content is rich.

Excellent experience. State of the art complement to the magazine, just as you would expect. I especially like that they listen to feedback from their subscribers. I requested that it should be possible to select text, mainly so that I can use Apple’s “look up” function for words I don’t understand. In the next update they had included that function - thank YOU!

Kein Zeitungs-Feeling mehr. Unübersichtlich Für mich Grund auf ein Papierabo umzustellen

Nice app but synchronization of articles still missing. Longtime reader and in particular listener to the economist. It’s annoying that when switching between phone and tablet, I can’t pick up where I left, since the article progress is not synchronized… This is especially annoying when listing to your articles…

Predatory practices. It is made purposefully hard to cancel one’s subscription. No direct option on the website. Only possible via chat. They will keep you waiting while offering you discounts etc. just to keep you from cancelling. Absolutely terrible experience. Very disappointed that The Economist would resort to such measures. I have been a subscriber on and off since 2006, since I have a busy life I am not always finding the time to read the magazine. I will certainly think twice before getting another subscription.

Top journalism, but bad app. The journalism is amazing but the app is frustrating. I have the following issues. 1) My iPhone runs very hot when using the app. Displaying text should not be that demanding. I am running an iPhone XS. 2) When using the audio playback, the app regularly terminates, then I have to restart it, and finally I cannot listen to the specific piece of content because the app cannot start the audio replay again. 3) The audio download is slow, the phone is hot, the app terminated multiple times per edition that I try to download. This is frustrating. 4) The app terminates out of the blue. I would really hope that the decs fix this soon. It’s a pity because I adore the economist as a newspaper!

Great content but the app is awful. Love the content but I dislike the app so much, that I only continue my subscription at a sharply discounted rate and even now I get angry whenever I read something. The problem is with the weekly edition- literally every second page is shown as a full page add that is so slow to load that I just see it as a blank page. And if I come across an article I do not want to read and just go to the next page the loading problem aggregates so much that I just see blank pages (ad or article) .. skimming through the edition just doesn’t work. And no - I have broadband and an iPad Pro - so it’s not resources on my side that are lacking; a Netflix hd movie loads faster than an economist ad.

Good journalism deserves a decent app. Dear Economist, I believe the only purpose of your app would be to make the listening or reading of your articles a joyful experience. At least. It should make it more pleasurable than to read a paper. Unfortunately your app is a mere desastre. It’s sad to say this but it is true: it is the worst app I’ve ever had since the smartphone was invented. The lists don’t work, it plays the article it wants (not the one you’re clicking) and it’s slower than trying to run windows 11 on a pentium computer from the 80s. You and your readers deserve something much better. Please improve it!!

Fantastic journalism, unusable app. I’m a subscriber and app user since several years. The Economist delivers fantastic journalism. The app as it is today is the poorest I’ve experienced so far. It’s not responding to input, the animations are painfully slow. Overall it’s very hard to navigate and it’s not fun reading this way. Also, a home screen widget would be a great feature. Other news apps have it and I find myself pulled into their apps all the time. I’d love to see the app stepping up to match the journalism it delivers.

The app is good but some enhancements could improve it. The app is good, is stable, light and works smoothly most of the times. However, the app could benefit of some features that would easily turn it into a 5 star. For example, the ability to synchronize between devices the last status (where I left reading) and the bookmarks. Also, more contextual info could be available through links to other artifacts (articles, dictionary, etc) or even external content. The app should offer more control about the content (current and old) and the account (for example, the ability to change region).

Inhalte top, App Flop. Die App ist unübersichtlich und wenig nutzerfreundlich. Vermisste eine klare inhaltliche Struktur.

Changes regional edition and problems with offline reading. For some time I am asked to try this app whithin the legacy app, so I gave it another try. Sadly this is still a very poor successor. Very annoying is the fact that the app delivers a different regional edition from my print and legacy app and I did not find any ways ro set the preference. Another major problem (already many times critizised in comments here) is the limited use without internet access. Internet Access is not only a problem for the few readers on airplanes but permanently affects many users behind various firewalls (including the great firewall). This makes the App unusable. I hope the legacy app will stay online until there is a better alternative.

Versionskonflikte. Vorsicht vor dem Economist. Nach dem wechsel von der Legacy app zur neuen App ist mein Jahres Abonnement nicht wieder herstellbar. Der support konnte es nicht lösen und eine Rückerstattung ist nicht möglich.

Great paper, mediocre app. The app has some obvious bugs that should be fixed. Its UI is quite counter-intuitive and should offer a few more options. 1. I usually read or listen to the weekly edition. When opening the app I should be able to return to the last article, instead of being pushed to the daily section. 2. I switch between reading and listening often. The last article should have an option to move in tandem. 3. There are bugs with audio playback all the time, even when downloaded. Stopping, not resuming, starting the next weeks issue when I want to resume listening to the current article etc. 4. The ads are intrusive. I doubled my payment to The Economist by moving from the Kindle to the App edition and in return I get audio, which is great, and ads, which are annoying. The ads should be removed and the price increased. Alternatively, at least change the UI so that scrolling on a small phone screen actually leads to scrolling and not to accidentally opening ads all the time. Hope this helps to improve!

A waste of effort. This concerns the app, not the magazine as such. Journalists and editors are not the problem here. I want to criticize several aspects: 1) the app is slow 2) there are often mistakes in the articles: words or even entire paragraphs are repeated, or paging is wrong. 3) the gifting of articles does not work well : if an article fails to send, it is still subtracted from your monthly quota. Five articles a month are too few. It should be double that. 4) the selection of articles is a poor reflection of the magazine. I would much rather have the full table of contents. 5) the whole app is redundant. You have a perfectly serviceable app in the legacy app, which is much simpler, works a charm and offers the full reading experience every week 6) I object to the Economist becoming a daily that offers bite sized articles on the latest news. Many others do it better, it has no added value. 7) you would be better off spending what must be an expensive venture on your journalists and what you do best : unparalleled analysis and background stories from around the world. Scrap the app!

Excellent journalism!. Excellent journalism! Regarding the app, I miss a feature that automatically deletes older content. My app blocks already > 8 GB storage. I can, of course, from time to time delete the app and reinstall it. However, it would be great if there would be a feature where you can set how many editions are stored or for how long, like in apples podcast app. Thanks for your consideration!

fidnebdkdldn. Can‘t login and the app crashes all the time

Reading economist since ever. Never one boring article,

Still one of the best. I’ve been using the app for a few years now and the design has improved significantly. However, ever since the last redesign, the app has been noticeably less responsive. It sometimes freezes for several seconds and/or I need to tap buttons several times. It also constantly loses track of which article I was last reading (unless I manually exit to the main menu).

Nice, clean app. Very nice little app that does what it says it does. I wish there was an option to sync saved articles between devices.

Excellent content; dreadful app. The app is fragile and not user friendly. It always reverts to home page rather than the last page/article read. The audio is often unavailable or lost. It’s a great pity that the quality of the app degrades the access to the journalism.

Crashes permanantly. App crashes permanantly, making Reading the Good Content painful.

Fix the app!. The journalism is great. The app is not. Sometimes it just crashes when reading mid article. It’s a bit of a 50/50 when opening the app whether it is going to lag when going from the home page to the weekly section. Even though I download the edition, not all images/graphs appear offline for me. This was not the case with the previous version of the app. The home page is a nice addition, with up to date information and very current articles. However, please fix the app!

Many bugs on the app. The app runs very slowly and heats up my phone until overheat

Text jumps while reading, app crashes often. There seems to be an issue with displaying ads. Ads appear and disappear while reading. Thus, the text frequently jumps which is extremely annoying. Since the update to the most recent version, the app crashes when opening on my iPhone XR. Really disappointed that such a quality publication has such a horrible app.

Frequent crashes. The app crashes frequently. Also I have to log in again every time I open it.

ANNOYING ADS BLOCKS. I put two stars, because of the ads, i pay for the subscription and i don’t want to see any ads!

Please fix the app - it is unacceptably bad!. Since the latest update, it freezes, crashes, doesn't scroll proper etc. For a 300+ eur subscription, this is unacceptable.

In a league of it’s own.. Reliable information, thoughtful analysis and a pleasure to read. What more can one ask for?

Great App, great Newspaper. Been a reader for years. One of the best newspapers around and it has a great app to match.

No search function. It would be great if it had a search function

Highest quality. I have never experienced a higher quality of journalism as in The Economist. And this app makes it reliably convenient to consume its contents. Bravo!

The app is unusable. Rating is strictly for the app… every week i spend hours trying to get audio to work; its a gamble how much of this weeks issue i am going to be allowd to hear… constant loading, no way to understand what the issue may be… no its not my connection, no its not abailable disk space… it also persists for months now…

I wish I could use the app upside down. This is the only app I‘ve come across that forces me to turn my iPad when I open it. (I, like many left handed people, routinely use my iPad upside down because the pencil only attaches (and charges) to one side.)

Essential reading. And now enhanced usability

Bug in article covers. Generally great app but recently there is a bug occurring preventing the article covers from being djown/downloaded. Great shame not to see them! Fingers crossed it gets fixed soon

Okay app but absolutely annoying one needs internet for Audio. Okayish app but not amazing. Totally annoying is that you need still internet for audio listening to articles once an edition is already downloaded. You need internet each time you open the app and between listening to articles.

Great reporting, mediocre app. The Economist app sometimes doesn’t load content. I have to kill it and open it for content to load. Animations, gestures all feel like a web wrapper instead of native. It works, but it doesn’t feel much better than reading it on the web.

Bad quality app. Audio download doesn’t work properly. There is always a long delay when starting audio and sometimes error messages. It seems it isn’t a complete download. It’s more a kind of Fake Download with some information and you still need internet. The problem is that this doesn’t work at all. This issue exists now for a long time and no one wants to fix it.

Poor app update. The Economist has been my favourite news outlet for >15 years. The Smartphone experience has been consistent and solid.

Wäre is the Playlist Feature?. Why did you remove the Playlist feature to select which sections from the weekly issue to hear? I don’t want to go through all the articles!

My favourite app for news & insights. The integration of the espresso app and the magazine app is a huge improvement over the previous „the economist app landscape“. Now you get all of the content in one place and navigation through different articles is a lot easier.

Careful with subscriptions. The economist tries hard to keep you as a customer with dishonest methods like saying you can easily and fast unsubscribe, but you rather have to plan hours ahead to contact them via phone or chat with one of their agents who tries HARD to convince you to stay and only then this person decides if you leave or not, which is mindblowing to me. I never thought The Economist would employ such unserious behaviours before I subscribed.

Great app with an irritating bug!. Great content and app. There is a bug for some time now that I wish it would get fixed. With the iPad Pro 11 it is not possible to scroll or navigate the app while you are listening to an article. This is possible with my iPhone though. It would make the app perfect for me if you could fix this. Thank you in advance!

Please fix the app. Very interesting articles and content but since a couple of months, the mobile app is getting increasingly worse. It takes very long to load, the app is irresponsive at times and since a few weeks it keeps crashing in the middle of reading an article.

App crashes when opening. Since yesterday’s update the app doesn’t open anymore and crashes Reinstalling didn’t solve the problem Please fix

Great News App. Great content, Morning Briefing, Audio Option for articles, already read articles are marked, Info about Time needed to read article is available.

tiresome. If you quit the app, you won’t get back to the article you were reading. Instead you‘re redirected to the starting page and are left to search on your own what you had been reading

Great mag, weird navigation. It’s hard to overview the whole mag like the New Yorker, it’s a little slow and buggy considering the quality of the publication.

Great app, but does not allow for editions. I love reading my Economist via the app. As a subscriber to the European edition, my only complaint is that it seems the app can only show the US edition with the US section in front an Europe last. Please allow for selecting editions so I can have the sections in the same order in the app as it is in my printed version. Thx.

Downloading current issue fully not possible and no syncs between devices. It’s not possible to download the current issue fully and take it with you. At best you are able to download the text, but none of the graphics an images. That’s a shame. Also, there is no synch of read status across devices, which makes transitioning from iPad to iPhone less smooth than it could be.

The economist‘s abo is great. It has very informative and carefully researched articles! A great source of information in a time where false information is spread everywhere.

Rating the app and performance, not the actual content. Performance is really bad, crashes every few articles, content takes a lot of time to load, then the app becomes unresponsive until it crashes or makes something weird like jumping to other articles

Missing Highlighting Feature. I really enjoy reading the economist. But I feel like the app is missing some key features, such as text highlighting and the possibility of exporting g those highlights into another app. Also the Playlist functionality for the audio edition is rather unintuitive.

Good overview but lacks some features. Overall quite good. But: - can not gift links to friends. - can bookmark in the app but in the website my bookmarks do not exist, the website does not include this feature at all. - Would like to browse the 1843 magazine in a separate section.

Still too beta. Version 3.2 now, and I still can’t skip back too the last 15 or 30 seconds from the Lock Screen or from my Apple Watch. Going back to the legacy app - thank God they haven’t removed it yet.

Why did they break the app?. The economist app used to be amazing. Intuitive and data light. The design has not changed much but it has become terribly slow and it is literally the only app which crashes on my Iphone 12. I always hoped that economist app would be immune to what seems to be a typical life cycle for many apps. A perfect app gradually being overloaded with new features which makes it so painful to use.

Cannot activate my subscription. I purchased the introductory 3-month offer and got immediately invoiced by iTunes. So far so good. But there is no way to activate the subscription in the iPad app. All screens ask for a CRN, which does not appear on the iTunes invoice. Wasted 2h to search for contact info, called the Economist who told me I need to solve this with Apple. Called Apple and they said it‘s the Economist. Canceled the subscription and at least I get a refund. But as the Economist knows, time is money and for that I don‘t get a refund.

App is mediocre at best. App does show stuff to read but feels rather like an embedded webpage. What really bums me is the fact that my bookmarks are not synched across devices and the webpage. I need to log in and give credentials. Why can’t I have full synch? Also, notifications cannot be managed properly, so one is getting quite bombarded with them.

Two suggestions. The app does not rotate. Only at the very start of opening it. Please change this. Then, I’d love to be able to change the text into two columns to replicate the print version on my iPad. Edit: I would also love to have the split screen option enabled!

Great ... but!. I love the content, especially the audio edition, but about some much needed upgrades to the app. CarPlay and AppleWatch Support so I. An Control listening to the audio edition would be great.

audio not always working. Pretty disappointing to having to uninstall and then reinstall the app for getting the audio version working. The app has yet to be developed to fully deliver all its claims to... :-/

Highlight function and Shortcuts support missing. First: Great content, thanks for that! Second: - Please integrate a function to highlight text and automatically bookmark such articles in the iPhone and iPad-Apps. - The support of iOS-shortcuts to start listening to the Espresso or the weeks issue would also be a very useful addition.

Must read for open minded (at least european) citizens. I love the Economist for its high quality journalism. It provides always a fact based, thouroghly investigated contents. For me it‘s the objective view on everything that happens in Europe and the world. Won‘t miss it. And btw the digital format is excellent.

Nice App But currently laggy. I like the app, but currently it is really laggy. It takes ages until it gets that I pressed a button. Other apps on my phone do not have that problem. I hope they solve it fast.

Still missing the playlist functionality. The playlist functionality used to be part of the app, no more, sadly.

Old app still wins for audio edition playlist. I like the daily overview and integration of espresso. However, the lack of features specific to the audio edition have caused me to revert back to the old app. Particularly for creating a playlist, the old one is still more useful. If this gets integrated in this app I may well switch permanently

Great, but the podcast/audio feature needs work. The app is pretty good, and did get a lot better in the last six months or so. But the podcast and audio features seem to still have a lot of bugs. It will show the wrong title for what it’s playing, the track looks like it’s downloaded but won’t play, and other frustrating bugs.

Disabled highly useful standard features. It‘s of course great journalism. But usability has become very poor: it is not possible to use the lookup or translate feature for single words in the text. Given the rich and high-end vocabulary used this really kills one of the major benefits of the digital subscription vs print. It seems that the Economist has disabled this highly useful feature on purpose.

Audio. The audio does not work since the last update. Please fix this issue. Update: Customer Service was able to help me.

Great. I really enjoy the economist app. Yet they could improve the audio version. Sometimes I download it but I still require an inter connection to listen to it. Also the button to scroll through sections is inconveniently places on the „remove audio“ button

Good App - Good News - Daily Briefing?. I highly appreciate the economist and its writers with their detailed thorough analysis. But why is the daily news since the last update missing ? Additionally why I have to change into the dark modus manually, iPhone supports that the app changes automatically when sundown started?

The economist is a worthwhile investment. The economist really is a high quality magazine and prior to subscribing I was rather doubtful about paying for such. Yet now I have to say I really enjoy the wide range of analyses provided and the app, including its short morning bits, is just great for staying up to date on the relevant.

Almost perfect news magazine app. I really enjoy reading articles using The Economist app. The layout of articles is great, the focus on the current edition is good, and finally it presents its content in a pleasant way. The two things I would like to see for an even better experience are - an automatically hiding titlebar when reading an article (it should get out of the way when scrolling down) and - more granular font size options (the jumps are too big for my taste and might benefit from a slider UI).

I love the economist. I listen to the economist every week since a few years but I must admit that they never managed to get their app working properly. The downloaded version needs internet to start, at the end of articles you have to reopen the app multiple times as it stops the playing + often I does not even open on the phone. This is seriously annoying considering the price we pay for it!

Exhilarating & illuminating The Economist App. 1. Easy to use online all features including text & audio download 2. Works flawlessly in offline mode to listen to audio and/or read articles 3. Easy to navigate to back issues to revisit article 4. Seamlessly allows articles to be shared on Social media Improvement Suggestions 1. Include a new “Climate Change” section staffed by similarly professional writers who deliver the Science & Technology section. 2. Promo Links to upcoming Economist Events

Forgets read position and needs turn page mode. I would like the app if it were not for two problems. It randomly forgets my last read position, so I constantly have to navigate back to the last article I read and the app and needs a turn page mode rather than just scrolling.

Espresso briefing corrections happen too often!. I respect the Economist and I wouldn’t pay this price If I didn’t believe in its value but the number of corrections of the Espresso briefing make me deeply doubt The Economist’s accuracy. I appreciate the corrections and yes, they can happen, but at this rate it makes me wonder who’s writing them and if I should I continue reading them. Would rate this 5 stars if it wasn’t for the frequent corrections.

Slow and crashes a lot. Very slow to start, slow to use, crashes a lot. Does not remember the article that I was in the middle of reading. I will cancel my subscription if this does not change in the next three months. I am very sad for the journalists that do an excellent job. (It has always been slow but the regular crashes are new)

Text Size Unfortunately Gone. The text size adjustment in the App was unfortunately removed with this version, and using the ones in Settings by IOS doesn’t really solve the issue. A pity but an opportunity glass magnifier manufacturers.

Simply the best knowledge update. The Economist offers rational analysis, a transparent political position, a weighing of different points of view, and a clear committment to basic liberal values. For me, this has been an indispensable source of news and assessment for over 40 years

Update has messed up audio playback. I like the recent update overall, but I can't play a list of saved articles like I used to be able to. An error occurs every time a new article starts, which means you have to unlock your phone, open the app and hit play again. Absolutely annoying. Please fix!!!

Great content, app user friendly. Love the Economist, always interesting content in short, snappy, to-the-point articles, user friendly app and website! Thank you!

Nice content, poor delivery. Audio playback feature is not intuitive to use. Hard to believe given all the examples of other companies. Magazine layout is also awkward to navigate through such as seeing the table of contents for an issue, and navigating between articles. App needs a major rewrite.

Worst customer experience when I want to cancel. You are forced to chat with a customer agent when you want to cancel and even if you want to or have time you have to answer random questions before you are given the go to cancel. This is ridiculous and not thoughtful on the customer experience perspective. If your sign up was seamless so should your exit be.

Half a life with The Economist. I started my subscription to The Economist at high school. With some breaks, your magazine has accompanied me on and off for almost 30 years. I always appreciate the depth of the analysis, the perfect match between objective reporting and underlying fidelity to a set of values reflecting a liberal economy and society. There are pieces I will not forget - as they reflect on the key events of my life - the fall of the Berlin Wall, 9/11, the two Gulf wars, the Brexit referendum, the endorsements of winning and losing candidates in key elections or the obituary for George Floyd. There are the special reports providing an in depth understanding of new trends and developments. I still love the weekly edition. I always start with Bagehot, Lexington and Charlemagne (maybe too old or too far geographically to fully embrace the Asian century and Banyan) and make time to digest the whole edition. But now there’s much more: I wake up with The Espresso (and La Matinale of Le Monde). I especially appreciate the successful mix between the weekly edition and the articles on the website. Saturdays it’s Checks and Balance and I also like it that we start putting faces to the different editors and contributors (it was not the case in the 80’s). So I am a fan, it should be clear by now, but I still believe that objectively you provide the most wide ranging and yet in depth & dense news and opinion coverage around. Keep it up - and hopefully I will be reading you for another 30-40 years! Let me finish with an anecdote: a friend and fellow subscriber stationed in Honk Kong told me he was receiving the paper version with cut off pages when not to the flavor of the powers that be!!

Dysfunctional. Slow and crashing all the time!

Best newspaper + app. Of course I love the economist for the content: the articles are relevant, uncomplicated, clear, interesting, timely and cover broad areas. But the app also deserves it to be sung praises: it is well designed, never glitches, allows you to save articles and gives you an estimation of how long the article takes to read. I surprisingly use all of their functionalities. And that’s without even talking about the World in Brief, the Economist’s best invention.

Getting better!. It’s clean and bookmarks finally sync albeit roughly. An idea: make it possible to listen to all bookmarks as a playlist.

I cannot live without it. I love the Economist, the paper and audio version.
