Duolingo - Language Lessons

Used to be good. Duolingo used to be a great app, but they now decided to add «hearts» to the Japanese course rendering it useless...

Stupid app. Use ChatGPT instead. This app won’t teach you anything. It’s completely random, does not tell you how the grammar works. Most of the time repeats the most boring basic sturf before throwing you into the deep end without any preparation. Highly gamified and dopamin-capitalistic.

Språk. Ønsker å ha norsk som et hovedspråk som nå er engelsk.

Grammar needed. More grammar explanation is needed. With this you just increase your vocabulary

Ny oppdatering, podcaster og hykleri.. Siste oppdatering ødela appen. De tok bort podcastene og lyd oppgavene, nå kan jeg ikke gjøre andre ting mens jeg lærer lenger. Mista motivasjon etter det. Du lærer lite du vil få bruk for i virkeligheten. Om du faktisk skal lære må du betale masse penger, trodde hele greia med duolingo var at alle kunne lære seg et nytt språk? Selv om alt ikke er dårlig- hele xp systemet syntes jeg funker bra- syntes jeg det er for mye som ikke er godt nok gjennomtenkt og gjennomført (hjertene). Håper dere kan få noe ut av omtalen min, og gir oss tilbake de beste funksjonene som vi hadde før.

👍🏼. Veldig bra , lærer spansk og der må man skrive på engelsk og spansk. Så hadde vært fint/lettere om man kunne få kursene på norsk og ikke bare engelsk.

System is broken. The app and the teaching method is fine, and I have enjoyed it so far, but the “heart” system is completely broken once you reach a certain level in any language you are trying to learn. I am at the point I can barely finish a lesson and if I do, then I will need to spend the next 10 or 15 minutes restoring the stupid hearts. I am progressing painfully slowly, and I am being forced to take again lessons I mastered long ago without actually being able to consistently practice what I need to improve on. This heart system does not work DuoLingo, there is absolutely no point in preventing people from learning what they are failing on, and forcing them to repeat what they already know. This only leads to frustration and people like me just dropping it completely once you realize you are just wasting your time, repeating over and over the same thing. And no, infinite hearts ARE NOT worth 10€ a month, and in any case you shouldn’t be locking any progress behind a paywall.

Stop suggesting friends.. I use your app for learning languages. Not socializing. Thank you.

Help. I missed a few lessons so I deleted the app, now my family is gone! Help me find them please

Stuffed with commercials. I have used this program for more than two years experiencing a steadily increase in advertisements out of proportion to the development of the teaching exercises. Sad!

Horrible updates. I am so disappointed with the newest layout update… it ruined my whole progress… Everything is a mess. I really don’t understand why they keep making useless and confusing layout updates

Help. I was on unit 8,when i came back they put me on unit 3 and all the levels that i made progress disappeared and they were golden too.I want them back!

Why can’t i get friends?. I have updated duolingo but i don’t have an add friends option. Google tells me to go to “privacy settings” and turn on public profile, but i dont have and privacy settings option. When my friends search for me it says i don’t exist. I’ve tried turning on friend requests but when i click done and go back in, its turned off again. Please help- i even have super duolingo.

Not good. not good hate the app, I mean you should not have life you should LEARN not PAY are you really so poor that you need so 4-year-olds to pay a lot of money, I am from Norway it is so sick stupid that it is not possible to choose the language you should have when the subject is to learn the other language, (show you what I mean) for example shown I will learn French: Write hello my name is Paul (example) but I have to understand English and use the app BECAUSE EVERYTHING BIG IN ENGLISH AND I AM NOT AS GOOD IN ENGLISH AS YOU MAYBE BELIEVE !!! so what I'm trying to say is that you should otate the app so I can read the task and then do it but it is French since I will learn it !!!!!!! and for that 3. Please get rid of the heart system. I used to love Duolingo as it was a really good way of improving my Spanish, French and Russian. I really hate the new heart system, because I have to start a lesson all over again every time I run out of hearts. I don’t care how many points or hearts I get. I just want to improve my language knowledge. The changes you have made makes me so frustrated that I am now looking for another language app.

Forcing in-game purchases even for paying customer. Duolingo’s Match Madness (which you have to complete to reach “today’s goals”) is impossible to complete without buying a time boost. Infuriating as I am already a paying user! Go to Reddit /duolingo for more info on this problem.

Can’t unsubscribe. Very good app, but when I try to unsubscribe a paid account- “can’t connect”. I have tried 6 times. All other connections works fine.

Duolingo er en artig måte å lære språk på, men jeg gir kun to stjerner først og fremst fordi de trakk meg 899 kroner etter prøveabonnement på Super. Da jeg klikket på ja, sto det at de ville gi meg påminning før prøveabonnementet gikk ut, og IKKE trekke meg. De har ikke sendt påminning som det sto de skulle gjøre, og de har trukket meg, ikke får en måned (149), men for et helt år! Det er ingen måte jeg har funnet som jeg kan klage direkte til dem, de skriver at det er Apple som må avgjøre det. Skikkelig bondefanget, med andre ord. Jeg får takke meg selv for å være naiv.

Full av feil. Liker konseptet, men tyskkurset er fullt av feil. Sletter derfor appen. Jeg har fått feil på mange svar som egentlig er korrekte. Blir helt håpløst siden jeg da «mister liv» i spillet og må svare feil for å komme videre ...

No longer a fan. Please, fix issue with rapid reviews giving you the most points. For max points, all I have to do is to repeat the easiest rapid quiz over and over again. No learning, but lots of points. This doesn’t make any sense. Should be fixable by increasing points given on other lessens or limit legendary rapid to once per day

Ad nightmare. It was good, boldly claiming it to be free forever - which it still is - but now it has become run down with advertisement on every pressable button and page. What a major disappointment it has become

Lost all value. Using AI to learn any language AND firing writers? Nah. Deleted my app and will not return.

Dont be so money hungry!. Good app. But the health bar with only 5 mistakes then wait a day before I could continue learning. Oh yeah I could also pay a fortune and keep on going. Downloaded busuu instead.

Funker ikke. Appen er fantastisk, men ubrukelig når man ikke får logget inn. For fire-fem år siden fikk Duolingo en bug som gjør det umulig for meg å logge inn fra min Apple-konto med min e-post via iPhone. Det går heller ikke å opprette ny konto. Jeg har tatt kontakt med kundeservice, men har aldri fått tilbakemelding. Så dessverre kun en stjerne fra meg, da jeg på grunn av tekniske problemer og manglende kundeservice er stengt ute av det gode selskap.

The new update ruined the experience. The new update removed the incentive to repeat lessons and to keep track of how far you have gone on each skill. Please bring the old version back!

Heart system sucks.. Please undo the heart system. I dont feel like I learn anything anymore after the heart update. I used Duolingo every day but now I dont.

The new interface is lawful :-(. The new interface is hard to navigate and the new quests make me less motivated to learn, the old one was simple and perfect

Somehow knows information I never told. When I got the app, I never mentioned anything about my real name. Not even my email has it. And my Game Center doesn’t have it either. I never told the app anything about my name, and I even deleted it because it didn’t learn my anything that I needed. But even now after I deleted it, it is still sending me weird reminders if I have time WITH my real name in it. I won’t mention my real name, but if you creators see this, the app doesn’t teach me anything and know information I keep personal! This is just creepy. And by the way, what I mean with personal information, the app knows my damn address! This is horrifying!

Demotivating learning - don’t download it!. First they change the whole layout, and I hated it. Making me less demotivated to use the app, to even learn a language. Now they’re upping the amount of quests you need to get a badge each month? Wtf is this crap?? F these badges. I miss how it was before, I was actually motivated and had a good time in this app. Feeling like I was actually learning. This new model is for real the worst thing they could’ve done to the app. Who the hell is developing this crap? Are you trying to lose all the users? Ffs as soon as I have reached my 1000 day streak, I’ll take a acreenshot to commemorate, and this app is going in the trash and I’ll never use it again. They changed for the worse making it less and less motivating. This app SUCKS. Stay clear and download ANY OTHER APP.

Used to be good. Be ready for them to take mechanics you love, that helps you learn, and make them infinitely worse by «streamlining» it. It’s fine if you learn best in their extremely restrictive path, but just hope that they don’t completely rewamp it, give you courses you’ve never seen, and add them as already completed. Because that’s what happened to me. Oh, you want you practice a course? How about we take those easy to find five levels, and turn them into 3 before we split them up and put them in different places. You can always use the icon to find them, unless of course, you have completed the course already, then the icon becomes identical to all the others, so you have to individually click on every one to check the names. It also forces you to do unrelated courses to continue on some, so you can’t even practice the same one over multiple levels to memorize something, it’s awful.

Dette er mer et spill enn er språkkurs. Etter å ha brukt Duolingo i 2 år, har jeg mistet mer og mer motivasjon for å fortsette. Ordvalgene man møter er ofte svært ukurante for dagligtale (krokodiølen spiser eple) og bærer egentlig preg av at man ønsker å beholde brukeren i appen lengst mulig og ikke at man skal lære språk raskest mulig.

Spam. It’s good I guess but it spams me like 5 times a day and it stresses me out☹️ I’m learning Japanese and it’s so stereotypical! The first word I learned was sushi. And also some of the sentences don’t make ANY sense. One time I was learning Norwegian it said “I don’t like to suck” (Jeg liker ikke å suge)

Hearts. Why does this app have hearts. It’s just demotivating

Previous version. The previous version was much better, now it is much more difficult to study, I used to study with Duolingo every day, but now because of the update I switched to another program

Good bye, Duo!. I have enjoyed Duolingo for some years, but not any more. They changed the interface and it is a totally new experience that is not compatible with my way of learning. I have requested a roll-back but they have not even sent me an answer. Good bye!

Upraktisk oppdatering. Man må nå betale diamanter hver gang man skal delta i de lyn-konkurransene. Her tjente jeg i hovedsak poengene mine, spesielt når det kom til å klare seg i en liga eller klatre opp en liga. Nå er ikke dette lengre et alternativ for meg som student, for jeg hadde mått begynne å bruke ekte penger på å lære meg dette språket, som forøvrig bare er en hobby! Før kunne man også tjene flere poeng per oppgave, mens nå er det kun 5 poeng og du må gjøre evig mange for å i det hele tatt nærme deg summen du kunne tjene før oppdateringen. Vennligst gjør oppdateringen valgfri eller fjern den for godt!

Delete the update!. The app is very good! WAS very good, until the new update!!!! :(

New update sucks. I purposefully did not update my app, but it changed to the new path anyways. I paid for an annual membership back in March, and honestly feel like this is no longer the content I paid for. It’s also frustrating that they haven’t responded to the criticism so far (from what I’ve seen), even though it’s been coming for a while!

Hart’s suck!!!. Really loved this app, and was thinking about upgrading to the payed version. And then you started with the harts. The whole concept is working against you. Especially on mobile devices where you easily make small mistakes like autocorrect. And that’s enough to lose your progress. Now I’m considering alternative apps just because of the principle. (And yes, I know you get unlimited harts in the payed version!)

They managed to ruin a great app. Been using Duolingo for two years. It was a great app, not anymore. Duolingo’s CEO should be less arrogant and listen to the users.

New progress layout is really bad. I luckily turned off auto-update in time for this update as it would’ve rendered the app pretty much useless for me. The category progress was amazing, it did not need changing. At least let people choose which progress layout to use as for preference, some people might like the new candy crush layout, but I know lots of people don’t.

Free life’s. I wish we could have more life’s so we could practice more without buying

Bra men dyrt. Bra app men man må egt kjøpe Duolingo + for å lære språket, noe som koster 900 kr i året (det går ikke an å bare kjøpe for én måned). På gratisversjonen har man bare 5 liv og hver gang du gjør en feil mister du ett liv, noe som er litt upraktisk når man skal lære noe nytt. Ellers er det en veldig fin app; oppgavene er varierte (både muntlig og skriftlig) og appen i seg selv er både pen og enkel å forstå.

Horrible new design. “The path” design has taken away the possibility to chose between different lessons - it took away the optional variation and now it feels like a chore.

Ruined the app. The new 2022 update completely ruined the app. Instead of being a innovative and highly accessible learning app, it’s now become a streamlined gameified mess. I’ve spent 3 years straight (1153 day streak) on this app and actually learned much. Now I have no clue where I was in my learning or where I need to practice. Time to move on to a new language app. This sucks.

Changes for the worse. Duolingo recently rolled out a new update that radically changes the way the lessons are doled out and organized, and it's no longer possible to easily go back and practice on previous lessons at your own pace (you CAN do it, but it now involves an enormous amount of scrolling, and the lessons aren't labeled anymore). As repetition is an important part of language learning, this diminishes the usefulness of the app to me so much that it's probably not worth renewing my subscription. It was fun while it lasted.

Used to be okay, now is terrible.. Duolingo wants very badly to monetize their application. Like most other businesses that start out with a good idea and caring about value provided to customers, they have shifted entirely to trying to milk their customers with total disregard for satisfaction and usefulness. They have taken away paid features, limited how much practice you can do, removed any self direction, and made challenges impossible without buying power-ups. In spite of the fact that the community for the most part hates the changes and that the application is both less engaging and less useful, they are still force feeding it to everybody as though satisfaction and education of the users have not only taken a backseat but been thrown completely out of the car with a strong preference for white lie earnings calls. Cancelling my annual family plus subscription is easy when the company doesn’t seem to want customers at all any more. I highly suggest learning languages anywhere else. This application is the hottest garbage you’ll smell.

Obnoxious. This app became such a pain in the butt to use, I understand you want to make money but I’m not going to use something that works like a “free to play” mobile game and spams me with ridiculous adverts and prompts me to pay for premium every 5 minutes. Just no, there’s so many other apps to use

New update. The New update has a terrible candy crush like progress. You can’t read short stories when you want. You can’t review stuff you’ve done before. And most importantly you can’t choose what you want to practice as you have to follow the path. I’m considering uninstalling the app :)

I don’t like the new design. I like this app and I have being using for a few years. But I really don’t like the new design. The study progress is made into a ‘track’. I have no idea which button has which content/material. I usually like to go back to courses that I am weak at, but now I can’t. The study progress is not up to me now.

New update suck. I am a big fan of duolingo, but the newest update really sucks… I cant even do old lessons without hearts anymore??? I like that they sh you more to do new exercises, but this is horrible.

Easy to learn new languages!!. I love this app, it’s really user friendly and fun!! One thing: kids <13 should be able to change their «name» because some kids have their full name in it, and they wanna change profile picture too!

New update. I have been using the app for years. New update was a disappointment. There is no longer stories available. The stories was a good source of variation. It is not as motivating anymore. Also I don’t want to upgrade to super duo because there is no info on how much it will cost after the free period.

This is honestly the worst learning app I’ve downloaded.. I played it for 10 minutes and then deleted it. It sucks. It literally sucks! I selected the reason I wanted to learn French as “fun!” It’s not fun. Nothings “fun” with only having 5 lives. It’s supposed to be a learning app. Not some silly video game! I have autism and adhd, and I don’t know about you but things that are “SUPPOSED” to be “FUN” that you only have a SERTAIN AMOUNT OF TRIES ON, IS NOTHING BUT STRESS. I came here to learn. Not to have a terrible time. Oh, and that “log in every day!” Thing you guys have, no. NO. I DO NOT WANT TO GET A NOTIFICATION EVERY DAY SAYING “COME PLAY OUR GAME YOU *****” IN THE MIDDLE OF MY THERAPY LESSION OR SOMETHING!!! so yea. I’m sorry for raging, but I’m not gonna play this app unless you guys atleast put it as an option to remove all the features with “lives” and “points” and stuff. You’re probably just gonna ignore this but yea, if you, yes you reading this message! Get stressed easily over things like this, yea, don’t download this app… just a tip 😅

New path-system is horrible. Whole family using Duolingo to learn Spanish, and great for freshening up my French and German as well. However, the new path-system is horrible and so turned Duolingo from a fun learning challenge for the family, to be discarded as a whole. Will not be renewing our family premium plan.

Get the new update back. Hi, i love duolingo and i have learned alot of spanish from it, but i dont like the new update, i dont understand alot of it. I would like to have the old one back and i know other people agree with me.

Noe jeg ikke liker. Jeg liker ikke at det er hjerter/liv som du mister for hver gang du tar feil, og at du må betale for å få uendelig med hjerter. Hvis jeg vil øve mer men er ute av liv, så går ikke det og da mister jeg lysten til å øve mer.

New update. Please consider making this update optional. It very well may work better for some people, but it should be an option -- not an obligation. It's worth recognizing that while the update may work better for some people, the previous version worked better for others.

What about friends?. Don’t Get me wrong, I really love this app but: At first when i got this app/language game it said where did you find this app, who told you about it but then came the “why do you want to learn this language?”, and I pressed travelling. I played alone in Duolingo for some months until I discovered that all of my friends had put the “other..” option and were competing agains each other, playing together, saw each other’s scores and more. I tried everything; searched the web, asked my friends, went to settings and I still don’t get why I can’t play with my friends, can you maybe fix that, so I don’t have to delete my account? My score was about 155+ but I kind of lost my motivation recently.. I’m sorry for bothering, and again: I really like this game! -Emily S

From great to messy. I hope they undo the new Duolingo update. It is chaotic and messy now.

The best app for language learning. Duolingo is without a shadow of doubt the best way to learn any language. The use of images, visuals and sound, as well as being highly interactional, makes learning fun. I also like the competiton based learning, because it only matters with XP, so you actually Get rewarded for hard work. However I would like to be put in the same category as people that are learning the same language as me. At least remove english learners(that cant function in their new country) from mainstream leaderboards, as they rack up unrealistic numbers in compassion to hobbyists.

Good but has loads of stuff that could be improved. First of all, duolingo has become way too obsessed with ads. There are ads wherever you click now, which makes it way harder to learn. The app promotes itself as a «free» learning resource, so I think they should make the app better for those of us who can’t afford to pay for duolingo plus Also, the hear/life system is broken. Your hearts should refill way faster. It would make the learning experience way better if the app didn’t punish us for making mistakes. I know that you can refill hearts by taking extra lessons and watching ads, but it still takes WAY too long to make up for one tiny mistake (especially when you lose a heart over misclicking). The heart system makes the app really demotivating. If the heart system was better, then I could probably play duolingo for hours on end, but I can’t afford duo plus

Trying too hard. Too much gamification for my liking. I ended up paying for a subscription, and still it tries to sell me gems. Almost made me uninstall. I find the App Store a barren wasteland of free junk. Duolingo has value, but uses the same evil techniques to get you addicted and keep paying. It demeans an otherwise worthwhile app

Distracting cartoon characters ruin a great app. I really like this app, but the recently added cartoon characters are distracting, annoying and feel completely irrelevant to the project of learning a language. Would have given the app 6 stars if these could be disabled. Hoping this option will be available soon.

easiest most fun way to learn a new language. So simple and effective

Ruined since last update. Completely ruined since the last update Nov 2022. What used to be a brilliant learning experience both fun and greatly motivating has now become a just another boring language slog. The shift to following a fixed pathway, means no variety and no ability to move around different topics keeping it motivating. It’s now difficult to keep track of how much you have progressed and you can’t visually gauge your progress like before. Since the update I now struggle to do a bare minimum of tasks each day just to keep my progress going, no fun, no motivation. Really not the way to encourage learning. Disappointing to see the developers ignoring the feedback. This update really shouldn’t be called an update, as it’s now a completely different app than the Duolingo I started more than a year ago. And as a subscriber I no longer get what I paid for. Interestingly since the update even though I do an absolute minimum of daily tasks, I am still easily keeping up in the leagues, which suggests everybody else’s activity must also have dropped right off. I recommend not to buy this App at this time.

Ruined by ads. Pretty good app, but the massive amount of ads ruin the experience for me. Also there is no focus on grammar which sucks! In addition the latest update is a complete disaster

I quit with duolingo. I had a 259 streak and then suddenly it just got set back down to 0 even though I did the German lesson that day so that is why I QUIT DUOLINGO!! 🤬: if you don’t like losing hard worked for items then this is not recommended for you don’t mind that kind of stuff then this is recommended. Ps.i will use other language apps that doesn’t have streaks

New layout. I’m sorry, but the new layout on Duolingo does not work! It shows me progress I’ve supposedly “done” before, but when I click on them there are so many words and phrases I’ve never seen before! It just throws me into it and I have no idea where I was. It really made me so much less motivated to learn. Please change it back!! It was much more clear and organized the way it was.
