What’s with the ads!!. The recent app update done a couple days ago, what’s with the spoken voice. Cannot understand it, it is squeaky. It needs to be fixed. —— I have used this app for years to help improve my vocabulary. Now all of the sudden along with all the other app developers they have to start doing this monthly fee or yearly fee, this is RIDICULOUS! If you don’t pay the fee you now get pop up ads. It is very sad that an app I have used for many many years without all the intrusion of these ads now follows other developers to gouge the customer out of their money. As I have said, in many reviews of apps that switch to a monthly fees after years of use I do not do monthly fees. I do not do yearly fees. It sad that everyone seems to be getting greedy. I have been using this app for many years. Now pop up ads. REALLY!! Update: this app was great now I am having issues. The speaking will not work. If I go back one day it actually does that almost a year. Right now I am not happy and I will be looking for another "Word of Day" app.

The new update removed the app’s best features…. Edit 2: The issues I shared below have since been fixed. Thank you, WotD team! Edit: I updated my review to three stars on the fact that the developers were very helpful and kind in restoring my saved words and disabling the “gamification” for me. Still, I’m unable to search & save words (which was my favorite feature) but I saw a comment below that it’s returning in a later update, which will be wonderful… Original Review: I’m a writer and I originally downloaded this app for two reasons: to expand my vocabulary, and to “stash” words that I want to save for later. When I come across an interesting new word in a book, for example, I’d go to the app, search for it, and save it for future reference. I used to use the app almost every day, and looked forward to each day’s new word. The new update removed all of this. You can no longer search for words, and the daily word is hidden unless you visit the app. This is incredibly frustrating. The app has turned into some sort of subscription-based Duolingo-esque game, instead of a fun dictionary like it was before. Plus, on top of that, most of my saved words disappeared. Now, I do understand the developers need to make money, and I’d even be happy to purchase the app for a flat price — if the interface returned to the way it was before. I’m very disappointed, and I’m afraid I’ll have to search for a replacement….

Really awesome. This app is really awesome! It teaches me and my family members a ton of new words! There is really nothing wrong about it. One time, I gave this app to my sister and she would not give me my phone back for the next half hour! This is one of the apps I really love because THERE ARE NO ADS!!! That really is great and an app with no ads is really great for children, especially impatient ones who love to learn. Maybe in this app, you could include a space where you can make a list of all the words you like and want to use more often. That would be really cool and I would even update my phone for that! Also, you could even make a word challenge where if you told your assigned word to someone, you would get a coin. You can save up your coins to maybe look at the next day’s word. As I said before, this app is astonishing and I love how I can educate myself with it!

Word of the Day. It's wonderful to be able to find the correct spelling of a word. It's also nice to learn new words as well. You can also ask about a word you want to spell without going through nine shades of you know what! Great job guys! Don't stop creating easy to use programs! I’ve wanted an easy to use program that, once YOU start to use it, YOU just start printing and eventually it corrects the word. Now that’s why I’m getting into this program a lot!! This is a sweetie of an app!! YOU guys keep it going!!🙂. I still LOVE!, this app. I know that it will always give anyone, the ability too learn about ourselves, as too know and understand how to speak to others. I know, that this is a lot, too take in at one time, but the thought Theorem it takes too create such an awesome app, is astounding!!👏🏻👍🏻😉😃 DON’T STOP!!, upgrading this app. Well done, everyone!!

Love it.. Idk, honestly it’s nothing groundbreaking or new. Or, maybe they do sincerely choose a good word for each day. I have a hard time believing that’s difficult to do, but perhaps that’s part of it, as well as the nice format. I enjoy the page turning (again, not new). As much as it sounds like I’m knocking it, it’s just me saying I don’t quite understand, but I love this app. The ad’s are a huge bummer, and I’d happily pay a small fee to own the app, but there’s no such thing to do! I say that being almost positive, because last I checked there wasn’t, but I can’t look now because I'm typing this unnecessarily long review. tl;dr: The app is somehow surprisingly super awesome and totally worth having notifications on to throw a “word of the day” at ya!

appreciate the illustrations, hate the paywall changes. i loved having my word of the day as a widget, it used to be free. i never opened the app otherwise. most of the words were ones i used regularly, or ones i would never have a use for, but it was still nice to try and use that word that day. now, you have to pay for what is essentially a glorified dictionary definition as a widget. it’s annoying, and frustrating considering it used to be free. i appreciate the addition of illustrations in the app. i understand WHY they added a paywall. that doesn’t mean i agree. if the widget showed these illustrations, or did something past the definition and example sentence, i would understand. otherwise i’m simply deleting the app as the main reason i got it is inaccessible.

Regarding the Aug 5th Update. I was really enjoying this app until this new update. I liked the word searches, but I can do without them. What I miss is being able to look up a word and stash it, not just seeing the words that were selected for me. If I came across a new and interesting word “in the wild,” I was able to add it to my list! Not anymore. Plus, this update messed with the widget I had that showed me the word of the day without opening the app. I get that developers want people to open the app, but the thing is - seeing the word on my screen is what GOT me to open the app (to see the definition). I liked the visual incentive of being curious about the word, rather than having just another notification, which I’ll probably ignore. To be honest, I’m less likely to seek out and open the app now. The update has some promising features such as illustrations and having words tailored to the user’s vocabulary level and I’d like to see these features incorporated into a version of the app that addresses the problems listed above.

A Great Discovery. As a writer who strives to improve whenever the opportunity arises, and thus searching the Internet for ways to do just that. Having stumbled upon this app was a real blessing. Grammar is very important to me, along with being too repetitive. This app has helped me with both in their own way. Being able to favourite/bookmark words is a huge plus. As well as the freedom of not having to pay. If I may make a request for the developers, you can deny it of course! I’d love to see an app for grammar aid. I have no doubt in my mind that you can make one that will rival those websites out there. Just as you’ve done here. It’d be more work I’m sure and I could understand it being a paid app, but I have faith that it will be made right. Either way though, I thank you for making this for us. ps: advice for fellow writers; don’t overdo your story with complicated words. Doing so will turn your reader’s away real fast if they have to look up every word. I do however encourage using one now and then to be a form of teacher to those who read them.

Word of the Day. My senior year of high school (graduated in 1966), I had an English teacher the stressed the need of a good vocabulary. Each week she would give us 10 words that we were to familiarize ourselves and then record if saw the word used during the week. Sources could be newspapers, magazines, books, or any printed material. I can remember many of the words today and where I found it being used. My career choice as a nurse encouraged me to learn medical terminology. When I married, I faced a person who could challenge my knowledge. My husband was an auditor for the US Air Force and was responsible for writing reports to the Pentagon, to the Congress and the Senate, generals, etc. His reports were word perfect, written logically. I hate to play Scrabble or any word game with her. Even when writing a personal note to him, I am careful to be word perfect. This app is a godsend to me! Linda

Ads make this infuriating to use. I have never written an app review before, but I find it necessary to share how frustrating this one is: I wanted to like this app. The interface is decent. But within 5 seconds of opening the app to see the word of the day, an ad covers the screen and you have to wait. There isn’t time to read the definition, much less hear the pronunciation before you’re forced to wait for an ad to run its time. This makes it worse than useless because you can see it’s got good content, but that flaw makes it absolutely infuriating to use. Otherwise, the word selection is lacking. I’m finding that so many of these words are obscure and not something one might ever use in daily or even semi-frequent life. I understand not every word will be applicable to everyone’s vocabulary use, perhaps just as interesting information. But that flaw seems like it defeats the purpose of the exercise. I kept the app for a few weeks, hoping it could redeem itself, but it’s clear that unless you’re willing to pay for a subscription (which is a waste of money, in my opinion, when I could try any other app for better quality), this is not worth even downloading.

This app is beautiful & educational. The people that run this App are Super Helpful.. This app has the most beautiful daily images that illustrate the meaning of the words they are helping us to understand and learn. I am a visual learner and I cannot say how beautiful their daily drawings are and how helpful they are to me to remember the word meanings & definitions. I look forward to a new word and its’ illustration every single day. I had an issue with the app deleting my history and the app developers remedied the situation in less than 1 day. I have never had that quick of a response from any app. I give this app 5 stars!!

Lacking. When I came across this app I was excited about learning a new word every day, however, the amount of information I’m gleaning is VERY limited. Besides the definition, each word is used in a sentence and you can hear its pronunciation, but that’s about as far as it goes. Oh...how can I forget...you can select a dialect. The options are: USA, UK, Australian, Canadian (Huh??? It sounds exactly like the USA version to me), and Indian. *Random unimportant fact: The female USA voice sounds like she just inhaled an entire helium balloon so I instead switched to the male. He’s much more pleasing to my ear. But I want more information about each word. How about synonyms, antonyms, word origin, alternative definitions, or first known use? Is it trying to be different than a dictionary? I think so. And the weirdest part is there’s a link to Google’s definition of the word. If I wanted Google’s definition I’D GO TO GOOGLE!!! Overall, it’s underwhelming.

So disappointed. I loved this app so much. I loved how I always had this little learning device that I carry around with me everywhere. It was simple and never too complicated. But then it started to update...a lot. I knew this app was finally starting to kick off, and I was happy it was getting the attention it deserves. But god, what the hell was it with the ads? Ads come up every forking five seconds! How do you expect me to even finish reading the definition of the word you notify me to check out everyday? Your motives obviously show little care in actually enhancing one’s vocabulary, but rather finding a pathway to earn more money. It hurts writing this down, but I’m hoping that with this you’ll cut down the number of ads that pop up. How about just one every two minutes? That’s reasonable. Not one for every five seconds. In the meantime, I’ll be turning off notifications for this app specifically and being on the look out for new updates, hoping one of them includes less ads. I understand you need some way to earn money, but seriously though, less people will probably delete this. I have much love for this app, so please do your part at making sure the people who download this app see it as a learning tool. A tool doesn’t force you to do things.

Used to love it. I’m a senior product designer and I used to LOVE this app. The reveal and the words in a row was very nicely designed with the Haptic Touch. I’m not sure what happened (design department got let go?) the latest update completely changed everything. The usability and the delights tanked. The discoverability and the typography don’t make much sense anymore. I’m quite disappointed. I’ve considered in the past but didn’t get the premium because how the model was designed I didn’t have to. I assume that’s why they got to change now—proving profitability. If the premium now gets me the old design I’d absolutely subscribe with a heartbeat, but not with the latest design :( sadly I’ll be looking for a new app while hoping they revert back to the old design some day.

Could use some improvements. So far I love being able to see a daily word. As a writer, having words to get a situation across without something being too wordy, is crucial. This app has been a huge help! I like to write a small prompt with the word of the day if it inspires me. However, there can be some fixes. On the favorite word list, I would much rather be able to see the list of words with the definition. I don’t care to know have many people have saved the word. I just want to be able to access words and their definition on the fly, especially on writing streaks! Or, remembering one of the words and trying to see the definition on a whim. Also, the widget shows a different word than the daily word. When I click see example on the widget, I get the word of the day, not the word on the widget. Thus, I have to manually search it. I don’t care too much for the crossword game. However, I don’t get the notification for it so maybe it’s a glitch?

Word of the day. Does what it said it will do. Easy to use and easy to install. A worth while addition to any persons Cel Phone. Greet way to start the day. Word of the Day? Much more: Yes! It’s a moment of reward and responsibility. It’s our destiny to improve our minds and we’ll bring. The obligation to ourselves and our existence to expand our minds and justified our being. Not forgetting the joy in self improvement. When we increase our vocabulary we expand our understanding and open our obligation of living. Learn and understand the complete meaning is the essences and reward to being human. A moment every morning to celebrate humanity.

Superior app for the seeker of knowledge!. This app is a work of art for today's world. Having matriculated over two decades ago it's quite refreshing to receive new words daily and incorporate them into my general conversation. I get trapped into using the same small words as I come into contact to and repeat; but thanks to this app and my busy lifestyle, once again go back to putting more thought into and having much more creative, interesting, and stimulating conversations. Download the app, listen to the words, write them down and incorporate them into your daily routine. Learning is exciting, remembering is monumental, rewiring your brain to think before you speak can save you in many many ways. Keep up the excellent work! ~Rico

I used to love this app.. I’ve had this app for years and up until the last several months have thoroughly enjoyed it. Of late, revenue is obviously much more important than the user’s experience. All free apps have ads. I get it but for some reason these guys seem militant about it. The ads are ridiculously long and cannot be bypassed. The ads come on at maximum volume which is very imposing and even embarrassing in a quiet environment. It’s not even possible to open the app and look at the word of the day without getting blasted with an ad longer than I would ordinarily take to enjoy and discover a new word. It’s not evenKratos possible to open the app and go to settings without even that being loudly and rudely interrupted. I pay for many apps that are worth having and that make it feel like I at least have a choice to upgrade or deal with a reasonable barrage of ads. This one for some reason makes the entire experience feel like I’m being railroaded into paying or having my experience intentionally ruined. Regretfully, I have tolerated this too long and will be deleting the app and finding one that is a little less aggressive in their pursuit of income.

A Useful App. The words are at just the right level- there are some I know and some I don't. It is always good to be reminded of the concrete meaning of words you think you know, but learning new words is why I downloaded the app, and it has successfully delivered on that point as well. The definitions are direct and easy to understand. My only complaint is that the app does not use the words in a sentence. However, this isn't essential... Ever notice how as soon as you learn a word, you start seeing it everywhere? I am pleased with this app. It's teaching me knew words without the unnecessary muss and fuss some apps feel the need to include with their services. It's quick, easy, and the words build up over time so you can greatly expand your vocabulary.

Deleting the app after new update.. I no longer see a beautiful image with my word. (Yes, developers, I know that you are telling us that sometimes you will see one and sometimes you won’t…but why?) Also, the easy access menu along the bottom to get to my collections and the multiple card views are gone from the Today page, too. I can’t even access my collected cards. I can’t see my history of words. I think everything is locked behind a paywall now. Seriously? Why multiple words a day? Was THAT supposed to get me to upgrade? Meanwhile, they take away other features. No. I am no longer interested in this app. I loved collecting each beautiful card and sharing them. I used to be able to see a full month of revealed words with their accompanying background pictures and now that’s gone. They would give you a chance to see all your previous words as a list or in a calendar view. The history of all my my words is gone. I am always baffled by changes that take things away. You’re supposed to add things to make me want to pay. Instead you took things away. I most certainly won’t pay now. Deleting. It was certainly a lovely app while it lasted. What a shame.

Great app!!. This app does what says, it isn’t complicated. It does have neat features though. You can favorite words, and then access them later. You can see a list of the most popular favorited words, you can flip back to words at least year or two ago. The app gives a word and it’s definition, an example sentence and how to pronounce it. The word is often challenging. It is good app, especially for students. I would highly recommend the app. Suggestion: I don’t wish to sound like a know it all, but I am a prolific reader and I know most of the words. (certainly not all, some of them are really different) So, I want whoever decides what word for the day to choose harder ones, less known ones. Especially one geared towards more AP exams? It wouldn’t be hard.

Lackluster update. I have been an ardent advocate and enthusiast of this application for approximately 6 years. As an educator, I utilized it daily to enhance not only my own lexicon but also that of my students. Transitioning from the educational sector to tech-consulting, I discovered its augmented utility in my interactions with colleagues, mentors, and clients, significantly enriching my conversational vocabulary. Recent updates, however, as echoed in other recent reviews, have regrettably oversimplified both the user interface and functionality. The word search feature less user-friendly, and the application seemingly evolving from a practical tool into a gamified entity. I earnestly implore the PM or the individual responsible for this update to reconsider and restore some of the original intuitive features, moving away from the current pared-down interface. The present iteration feels disappointingly inferior, reminiscent of a transition from a meticulously milled piece of aluminum to a mass-produced injection molded plastic.

Great app but room for improvement!. I totally love the idea of this app; it’s smart, quick, and simple, but the real thing has a few issues. Mainly the words and sentences: the words are usually ones I don’t know and they can be really cool, but other days the words are very oddly specific to certain things or are not difficult words at all (dabble and gullible, for example, respectively). Usually the sentences are good ones, as well, but also some days they can be strange or have issues—take today’s word, for example, pallid; the sentence is “I looked at her her usually glowing face was pallid”, with the line between the two and no punctuation at all. Other than this, though, the app is wonderful and I like it very much!

Today Widget. Love this app. There are so many in the AppStore but this one stands out above the rest. I have had this app for quite awhile and loved everything about it, until recently. I miss having it located in Today's widget, it was always included on the iOS versions, then suddenly remove. It was a helpful reminder when checking the News to see your Word for the Day shown, instead of waiting for your selected time of notification to pop-up. It would be nice to have it back on all iOS levels and not just on the newer versions. Please consider adding it back to the lower ones again.

Doozie. Simple. No extra BS. Easy to use. When I was a kid, my father would write a word of the day on my napkin in my lunch box. I had to use to word once at school and once at home. Word of the day does me the favor of giving me a new word every morning to use! Sometimes it’s a word I know while others it’s a new word! Sounds nerdy, but it’s a fun little challenge to knock my word goal out everyday, especially given that I don’t have time to read as much as I used to. People always tell me I have a great vocabulary, always a plus to hear 😉 10/10 recommend if you’re a bit of wordsmith like myself, or just want an easy way to actively improve your vocabulary!!!

Word of the day...could be better poor quality of word usage and definition. Word of the day should give more and better examples of the word and not just in one or two sentences and also in different context with the option of a thesaurus being available other than a link to google for further resources of understanding the meaning of the word. Google provides clearer definitions and example of how the word “should be used correctly” and used in a complete sentence. Googles got the right idea for better sentence structure and meaning. The examples of definitions from word of the day is quite elementary and not clear and using the word to describe it somehow as the meaning doesn’t really define or explain the word and MUST be used in a better context. ...so for these reason I’m rating it 2 stars ✨

Changed with new year. *update* still don’t like the “chat” feature and the new look AND customer service was great. They explained why and respect my comments. I miss the old look and now will have to get used to the list. 5 stars customer service averages against the look. Glad to know customer service is available. My brain will take time and I will practice what customer service advised. Thank you. Getting some new “chat” with no explanation. Used to be able to review the week or months at any time and they are now gone. The other version was much more user friendly, accessible to review all of it any time. The previous version worked with my learning style. This does not. With a brain injury, Asperger’s, a PhD, and as a former professor I know how we need myriad learning methods and options. The previous app offered that and this one is limited, annoying in the way I have to battle to find information and zero customer service. I al so disappointed because it truly was a lovely app before. No longer worth the money. This iteration is boring, colorless, unaccessible, with too many changes. Why change what wasn’t broken?!?

Premium doesn’t work. I thoroughly like this app and would like it even more if I could get what I paid for. I have a Premium subscription, however, when I finish the deck of 10 AI generated words it tells me to get a premium subscription in order to see more words. When I click on “premium” it just takes me back to the same page. Also, when I try to watch the presentation for the very first “stop saying” word under “emotions” it says “loading presentation” without actually loading. I have waited for 5min at one point. I of course have open and closed the app many times to no avail. I will not be subscribing to Premium again, of course, if this isn’t fixed. I wanted Premium specifically for the “stop saying” aspect.

Love the word of the day. I have a very extensive vocabulary. What makes Word of The Day special is that the words you get are not the easy ones. Many times because of reading so much I will come upon a word that I don’t know and use it correctly but spend five years mispronouncing it. Word of the day doesn’t let that happen by having audio of the correct way to pronounce the word thus saving you embarrassing revelations when someone takes pity on you by telling you the true pronunciation. My father always taught me that you can only think as deep as your vocabulary is so Word of the Day will expand your mind thereby expanding your mind.

Flip this app. OK I have written a strongly well thought out review for this app, and I wanted to show my greatness by sharing it with a close member of my life, but when I came to find out that not only is this app, not accessible to any of the children of the Internet, but it also isn’t that my review isn’t showing up on the app reviews therefore, this app is trying to silence me we all need to protest for media literacy and joy, because why can Word of the Day my speech this is stupid it’s ugly. It’s not even cute and everyone who has this app should genuinely rethink any life decision they’ve ever made, and distinctly know everyone they’ve ever known is lying about loving them, because for a app that works like a dictionary should rethink any life decision they’ve ever made because this is embarrassing, I just wanted to be cute and look what happened don’t do the same you will go crazy psychotic we’re friends will disown you your family will hate you you’ll be a girl when you’re older and like the color beige and and become an accountant and become an unsuccessful person in general life people who own such an app will be hated for all of eternity. This is embarrassing everybody shame #ShameAnyoneWho’sEverOwnedIt’sNotPreppyThePilgrimsWeren’tPreppyAndNeitherAreYou. XOXO IDIOTS 🎀🩷

Exactly what I️ was looking for. So far, this is exactly what I wanted. Not only does it give you a new word everyday, you can go back and look at past days and what the words were. Even MORE fun and enticing for me is the search function. I am an avid reader, lots of times I come across words I can figure the meaning of just by the sentence it’s in. But this app has a function my phone lost last time ‘They’ made the new year and new phone....it will speak the words for you. That’s just invaluable to me; not only do I get to read dictionary definition, I can learn how to say the word too. Ultimately making it more likely the new words I learn will make it out into my conversation. Thank y’all for the great app and thank you for making it available without pay.

Suggestion. The amount of ads in this is laughable. Instead of forcing ads whenever users are trying to achieve the very reason they downloaded the app (trying to read the definition of words) and frustrating them to the point that they delete the app, why not give a little to get a little? For example, offer the possibility to customize our app (like different fonts, backgrounds, etc), but they are earned through in-app currency (gold coins, diamonds, etc). The user then has the opportunity to watch ads to earn that currency or use real money to pay for the currency. For now, I’m deleting. I’d rather use the word of the day widget offered by Dictionary (the widget is only available in the side menu, the page that is shown when you get to your main home page and swipe left), but it’s better than dealing with the constant ads.

You know what, yeah. I’ll rate you.. This app is one of my favorites. I commonly skip the adds and hit ‘rate this later’ but frankly I should give it its due. It’s been a phenomenal app that has admittedly given a word or two that didn’t have much relevance to me but there was a period of about five weeks where all but a handful of words were not relatable to my life. It’s an amazing and simple app that when used regularly can really expand your vocabulary and help you understand words you already know even better. Have definitely recommended it to friends and I’m recommending it to whoever is reading this.

Love it!. Our language is constantly evolving, which makes this app so useful. I love using the perfect word that exactly defines what I am trying to communicate or describe. Just makes life easier when discourse is more clear. Also, the art depicting each word of the day is rendered beautifully and also is an extremely helpful aide to those of us that are visual learners. Seeing a pictorial definition helps to reinforce the meaning of each word for me, compared to text only (as goes for audio learners, hearing the word of the day is useful for pronunciation and another manner to bolster comprehension.)

The ART makes it 100% worth it!!!. The transformation that this app has undergone is one of the best I’ve seen out of any app in a LONG time. Special shout-out to the art and design team- you guys create the most beautiful, expressive, descriptive, and accurate cards for each word of the day. And I’m so glad that us free users can go back and see previous days. Your art deserves to be visible to all for more than 24 hours. The art seriously makes this app!!!! And I won’t shut up about it! I love everything about the recent update. It’s so much more interactive and useful in learning new words and way more attractive overall. Bravo! It’s a widget on my Home Screen!

You guys ruined the app.. I have had this app for 4 years. I am finally deleting it because it has been ruined. Years ago the app was simple, fun, and easy. You open up the app and there's your word of the day. No subscriptions begging you to waste money on. No "streaks". No punishing you for words you missed (locking them behind a paywall). No word puzzles. No vocabulary score. No collections. It was straight to the point, because let's face it do you really need all of that? It's just a dang word. I am particularly frustrated at how words are blocked if you missed them. My advice for anyone who reads this— download the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it will have a free, easy word of the day that will even tell you about its history. Or you could just search online instead of dealing with this unnecessarily complicated app :|

Words are not practical or useful. I’m still in the free trial. I really wanted to love this app but some of the words presented are too impractical. My goal is to learn new words that I’d actually use in daily conversation so I can clearly and effectively communicate my ideas. An example of a word presented is “f” (the “word” was literally one letter). The word form was “unknown”. The definition was “farad”. Ok, so what the heck is a farad? I had to look that up: “a unit of electrical capacitance”. After that I realized this app wasn’t for me. Some other words presented are not actually used in spoken English, were too nichey or too academic. I don’t have much time to waste. I would only pay for this app knowing that the word lists are well-curated and hand-selected by real humans who know which words are ACTUALLY used in daily spoken or written English, not AI or someone who is not qualified. I’m not suggesting the latter but I cannot imagine a real human selecting “f” as a daily vocabulary word.

Perfect for writers. I’m a native English speaker, and a writer as well. I’ve been looking for a vocabulary app that would benefit me as a writer specifically, not as someone studying the language as a non-native, ESL student, which seems to be the majority of the vocabulary apps out there. I already have a good command of the English language, but wanted to learn more of the uncommon words that might benefit my prose. Word of the Day does just that. While it would definitely benefit ESL students, I’ve found it fits my use case perfectly. Highly recommended to both ESL learners and native English speakers looking to learn those ten-dollar words, as Hemingway called them.

Most recent update essentially ruined the app.. I've used this app for a very long time. At one point I had a "streak" that was well over an entire year of getting the word of the day because I enjoyed it so much. However this most recent update really confuses me for a few reasons... We used to get one word and a visual example every single day. Now I get 2 words and no picture...? Which one is the actual word of the day? And why is there not a picture in that awesome art style that made me like the app in the first place? Sometimes I get 2 words and one of them is one I had as the "word of the day" 6 months ago. If this is supposed to be a word of the day + a refresher on old words cool - but that was never explained upon updating nor does it make sense. The app was its best when it was simple, digestable Ui, and a beauitiful photo that i had to hold down or swipe away at to reveal. It helped commit the words to memory. Now it's just forgettable white note cards. Please fix this app - it's a great tool, but at its current state I dread using it and have even considered deleting it.

This app have problems with notifications and page loading. I recently purchased the premium subscription but got very disappointed after I notice that notifications do not appear properly even after all buttons checked and set up in general settings. When I am trying to check popular words the page doesn’t load and the whole app freezes. Dear developers please fix this issues since it’s getting very frustrating to deal with this all the time. Thank you. Following the reply from developer I did as it stated. However after reinstalling the app and login with my subscription ALL MY SAVED WORDS GOT LOST. Can you please advise regarding this issue? It’s very frustrating to keep having issues with this app and paying premium subscription. Thank you

App Redesign. EDIT: Since the major redesign, most of my complaints below have been addressed. I’m much happier with the app now- the last thing I’d like to see is a way to quickly return to a specific calendar day, rather than having to swipe between each word. But this is a relatively small issue, given the ability to save words to lists, etc. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Lifetime subscription member here. While I like some of the features of the app redesign (the art for each word is fun and a good way to get a better sense of the word) I really dislike the fact that I have to wait several seconds upon opening the app in order to “reveal” what the new word is, and even then you have to wait for an animation to complete, then “flip” the card in order to even get a basic definition, let alone any etymology details. Pleas give us an option to turn the word “reveal” theatrics off. On top of that, it would be hugely useful to have a way to scroll through the daily words and not have to flip EACH of the word cards over to get a definition. This is not the way I want to have to interact with the app. Let me easily scroll through words and their definitions, with an option to look at the word art if I want to! Lastly, it doesn’t seem like there is an easy way to look into past days/months/etc. like there used to be. Scrolling through weeks and weeks worth of words having to swipe to love one word at a time is getting to get old fast- the old “calendar” view was helpful in this regard.

Interesting and fun for those who enjoy words. It’s a fun and intriguing way to kill time, leafing through these words...if that verb is still applicable. I only wish it could have a go back button and I would be able to simply tap a word I do not know thus showing me the definition. There are a couple dictionaries like that available as apps, and I have become accustomed to the feature. As this is about the word of the day, it is nice! I haven’t taken the time to fully explore this app either; meaning I haven’t tapped every button yet, so I may be missing a couple of features, but it seems pretty straightforward.

Recent update is horrible. I have been a long time user of this app and have enjoyed it immensely. The most recent update has taken me by surprise and disappointed me immensely. Like previous posters, I thoroughly enjoyed the one word a day and the artwork that came with it. This stack of five cards that sometimes has a picture with it and sometimes doesn’t is confusing and frustrating because I keep tapping the cards trying to figure out why I can’t see a picture and why I can’t see all the previous words like another poster mentioned. Also, I opened the app late yesterday afternoon and got my five cards. I opened it this morning and I still have the same five cards I don’t have new ones for today. I found this to be very frustrating because now, sometimes later today or throughout the day, I’ll keep checking to see if the new cards are available. I feel like I was one of the apps’ biggest cheerleaders, and I don’t feel as overjoyed with this app any longer.

Uninstalled immediately after initial setup. I understand funding the app and pay for many apps that I enjoy because I hate ads and I love supporting apps by paying directly. However, from a UX/UI standpoint I have issues. After the initial set up, I was immediately asked to pay for the app before ever even seeing what it looks like to use. It included an annoying countdown offering 50% off, and I could let that part slide even though in my opinion it gives off scammy vibes anytime I see that. After closing the “offer” so I could try actually using the app, I was only able to see the home screen for a millisecond, not even enough time to read the word of the day much less the definition, before ANOTHER pop up asking me to pay for the app. Seriously? I haven’t even used it yet! How could I possibly know if I want to pay for it? Deleted the app and I will not reinstall. There are other word of the day style apps and services; I will continue my search.

Does What It's Supposed To Do. Word of the Day. That's a pretty straightforward explanation of what this app is and it delivers. For those who are looking to advance their lexicon, this is one to consider. Words provided vary from "oh I've heard that word before" to "is that even English?" but the app always provides the necessary information to make even the most exotic of words accessible; use of the word in a sentence, phonetics, etc. Words can be favorited and referenced later. A word of advice; coming from someone who needs coffee in the morning to begin properly functioning, having the app provide you with a new word immediately after your alarm is a great way to kickstart your brain before the caffeine strikes.

Great App!!. As a non-native speaker, I have to say that every day is a new day to learn new words enjoyably and easily. The pronunciation of the terms and the different accents in this app. have helped me to understand better the English language spoken by so many people all over the world, and my vocabulary keeps growing faster every single day. I love it, and I recommend it to anyone, native or not. It does not matter if it is simply for fun, academic level purposes, or to improve reading or listening skills; you will always find a piece of valuable information to learn.

Frustrating but otherwise good. When I got this app I was hoping to expand my vocabulary. I already speak English and thought this would be a fun way to learn new words. The problem that frustrated me is that most of the words that were “word of the day” I knew, so it was not much of a vocabulary expansion. I did enjoy the set up of this app though. I liked how you could save words that you liked and also that there was a master list of words. I wish they used more ‘odd’ or ‘rare’ words as the word of the day. I did find a bunch of new words in the master list but it lacked the fun “learn one new word a day” aspect that I thought I was going to get. All in all this is a good app but I would not recommend it for people looking for a fun way to learn new words or expand their vocabulary.

Decent app, entry-level vocabulary. I downloaded this app thinking it would be a fun way to stay sharp and learn new words, and while it does function as advertised, it’s a little underwhelming. The daily words are usually pretty basic, and most of the ones I’ve encountered over the two-ish months I’ve had the app are already part of my vocabulary. That said, it provides a decent refresher for adults, and would be good for younger individuals or anyone who feels they need to master some basics before moving on to more obscure words. There is a dictionary portion as well, which I’ve found more helpful than the word-a-day function when it comes to discovering unrecognized words. Having to flip through the dictionary kind of defeats the purpose of the app, at least for me, but it’s nice to have it included.

Never thought about expanding my vocabulary. Until now. English was always my worst subject. Im assuming my ADD was the fault. I can always read well and fast but nothing would stick. Especially words and their definitions. But overtime with all the nerdy games Ive played Ive slowly became more articulate than ever before. Games that involved lots of reading like Zelda, FF series, plus all kinds of other RPGs really helped a lot. Anyways theres only so many words in games that I can google up. But with this app. It gives you the definition and an example of the word being used in a sentence. That is what always helped me remember the word. I barely downloaded this app and am very excited so far

So-so and Good at the same time.. First the so-so. The example sentences most often, are terrible. They continue the definition as opposed to using the word in a “real” relatable sentence. Then there are times when the syntax is off. I find myself reading the sentence multiple times to try to understand what’s really being said. As others have mentioned, a word retention system would be great, maybe mini daily games that train you to remember the word you’ve just learned. Now the good. I love that the words are very diverse, there are current language words as well as obscure words from the past. The app isn’t too obtrusive with notifications; I get just one a day, letting me know there’s a new word available. I really enjoy sharing the words with my kids and co-workers.

Helping me improve my vocabulary one day at a time!. Absolutely love this app. Worthwhile purchase for anyone looking to expand and improve their vocabulary!!

Keeping up with language. WotD has been a great resource which enables me to expand my vocabulary. It is easy to use, and the words which it covers are easily inserted into everyday writing and conversation

Horrible update. This app used to be great, but then this new update came along and ruined everything. It’s overcomplicated now and I can’t open my favourite words folder without the app crashing.

Strangely Confusing. This app says what it does - it gives you a new word each day. However, the example sentences are often bizarre and provide little elucidation of the word’s meaning. They can be convoluted, dated and confusing - even as a native English speaker. Also, I understand this app needs ads to be profitable, but they are long, loud and hard to exit.

Great. I took it upon myself to learn a new word every day, so when I found your app i was ecstatic! I love all the words! I’m just going to have to make sure my sentences don’t become too verbose now that I have all this describing power!

Great! Informative. A great app. I am enjoying the new artwork features with the latest update. However, I do miss the ability to have the app running on landscape rather than just portrait mode.

Love this App. As a young boy I used to randomly pick 5 new words a day from the Oxford dictionary and tried to use one of those words everyday. I found that my language skills improved enormously very quickly but carrying a dictionary with me was a little difficult so I slowly lost the habit - now it’s in my pocket wherever I go and I also get reminded !! Amazing. 👌

Love it. I think this is an meritorious app, perfect for expanding vocabulary. So far I’ve really liked all of the words picked for each day

New update 50/50. I have loved word of the day in widget form on my phone for ages now, but I hate having to open the widget to see the word. The new pictures and stuff with words are cool but I don’t want to click into it- the whole point of a widget isn’t to click in. Not sure if I’ll keep it now as defeats the purpose. But use to love it.

Best vocab app. I like how easy the app is to use instead like other app, they have constant ads popping and very inconvenient style

Great Resource. Great for students and teachers alike! Even if you’re just curious, or trying to improve your vocabulary, I’ve been pretty happy with this app. Handy that it has the audio option, example, and the ability to go back to previous days.

Unreal education. I have been using this app on a daily basis between friends. I have found it fantastic & really good educational tool.

Wonderful app. The unveiling of each word car bring anticipation and joy. Clever little card / word of the day app. Thank you.

Excellent vocabulary improvement. New words everyday of varying complexity, and not too many ads. Fantastic

I was engrossed in this app. This is the word I just learnt in the app “engrossed”, they make learning so fun and especially the don’t say section captured all my interest and that is the best part about the app. I wait 24 hours for the new word in dint say section each day, they just make learning fun.

Great but could be better. Would be better if the word search has a feature where the definition of the word is displayed right after you find the word.

Would recommend. Works as it’s supposed to. It doesn’t have every word in the English dictionary but that’s ok. I use it everyday without fail, and would definitely recommend to word fanatics.

Neat words!. Love getting new words everyday! The words are interesting and out of this world.... which I love! Also love that you can personalise the voice and time you receive the notification for the word of the day!

Too many ads. I used to love this app but now getting a 30 second ad every time I open it has ruined it. I don’t mind the occasional ad but at this point it’s just a money grab. You’re not really providing any worthy content just the dictionary definition of a word..

Always loved words, now learning new one’s every day! Thanks!. I love most that I can review words that I’ve already learned!! Excellent app for word nerds ;)

Expensive and suited to school children/teenagers. The app is not only expensive, the description of the word when used in a sentence is basic and embarrassing, like they are teaching teenagers. Also there is an error in the recent one as well. Feigned “The day [most of the sentences start with “The day” - so basic] you feigned a cold so that your mother would allowed you to skip the final test” I wouldn’t bother getting the app, buy a dictionary instead and save your money.

Pragmatic and commodious. This virtual phrontistery provides sesquipedalian words, while penumbral at times, with laconic and pellucid explanations; all executed in a protean and quotidian fashion. Mastery through fartlek literacy will lead you to literary empyrean where you can then speak extempore (even for the vociferous who may be at risk of becoming a pariah through their diatribes). This app is perhaps neither for the impecunious miser who scrimps nor those tending to feel nonplussed — they may just abjure. This puerile review may cause umbrage to some for which I do not feel attritional or compunctious.

Great app. I like to word choices . Nothing to different , and my kids can use the words also . Easy to use

Jazzy Janine. Great, makes me feel much smarter than other people and I like to try and use the words in conversations so that I can make others feel dumb and small... 😀😀👌👌

Fav Daily App. Not intrusive. Just does what it says. Gives a good mix of new words an daily used words that can often be confused on their meaning. One of my favourite apps. A+

Version 9 is atrocious. The app’s recent update to Version 9 has taken the most wonderful app and transformed it into something basic, removing all wonder and excitement. What happened to the monthly view? What happened to the reveal? Why did everything move? It was seamless and user-friendly for all ages, but now feels clunky. Unfortunately I will not be proceeding with use following the changes.

The words had become an addiction of communication. I looked forward to reading the new word of the day. For some reason the app no longer works and just comes up with a spinning wheel

Vocabulary expansion on steroids. Love this app! One of my goals is to learn something new everyday. With this app I get to learn a new word everyday. Loving that my vocabulary is expanding

Nice widget but absurd price. I like having the widget with a new word each day, some fascinating, some are just commonplace but on the whole it’s good. I thought I’d upgrade it to remove the ads, assuming it would be a few dollars one-off. But no! It is an expensive recurring subscription. $33 per year. Or if you like, $90 for lifetime. Seriously? For an app that has a word on a widget and gives you a definition. Pull your heads in developers.

great motivation with excellent materials. learned about this app from a youtuber introducing English study methods and much appreciate them doing so

Great APP and daily incentive to have fun with new words. I have used this free App now for three months and every day I look forward to my new word, They even pronounce it for you and word puzzle. Great incentive and a wonderful app to expand your choice of words or just make you aware of their existence. It’s very tempting to buy the monthly fee extra on offer to have more words. For me . One word a day , a puzzle day keeps the mental doctor away … thank you. Definitely one of the few apps I really use .

Fun education. I have always had pride in my vocabulary — until now! I never knew how many words I didn’t know (irony?). Thanks Word of the Day for bringing a little evolution to my brain. 5/5

Great app. The more I use it and discover the functions of this app I am finding it more versatile and more beneficial as a resource. Really agree that five stars.

Great words. As a family we’ve been enjoying the words every day. It’s easy to use and sends notifications each day which is handy.

Extremely disappointing update. I used to love this app. Informative as I love learning new words. The widget was great as I could see it multiple times a day so it helped me recall the word and let it sink in rather than just seeing it once. Now I have to check in every day, tap a bunch of times just to see the word, the widget doesn’t work and if I miss a day I have to pay premium to see it? You want my money because I was too sick to open my phone and get the dang word for the day? Utterly ridiculous and I am now more frustrated than excited using the app. Hoping you change back and stop being so desperate for money because it’s absolutely not worth it to me. This update made everything much worse.

Love seeing what the new word is each day. Having the pictures to help with memorising is such a great idea!

Solid and Reliable. Does exactly what it says it will do. Clear definitions and clear examples. Ability to check list of favourites. Excellent!

I love it!!. So much fun to flick through the days I’ve missed and learn a whole vocabulary of words Too handy 😂😊 too good

Love it. Learning a new word everyday has really broaden my knowledge of the English language. Impressing my friends is an added bonus!

Word of the day. Word of the day is the best thing ever it is so good but I would recommend kids 8 or 7+ to get this app because younger kids may get frustrated and wonder what to do and expect a fun game to play but other wise it is a great app and you learn a new interesting word and the meaning with a sentence to go with it every day you do not need to pay (I don’t think) and you get to choose what time you get the word each day and I totally think you should get unless you can’t read!😂 I only got this app today but so far I learnt a word called blabbermouth and I wonder what will come up tomorrow😊 I am only eleven years old and my name Alooka

75% rating. 5 star because that’s as good as it gets these days with apps.. Pretty good app. Sometimes when the word of the day pops up, it somehow relates to current circumstances. Or maybe I have selective calculations.

Exactly what I wanted.. Provides a notification for a new word everyday and the feature to save words I want to keep. Exactly what I wanted.

Amazing vocabulary. I love that this app gives you a new word everyday, completely recommend this app.

Change the app and don’t like the new format!. This used to be a great app when I initially signed up last year. I could catch up on earlier words before my subscription and catch up on days that I may have missed. The artwork was also beautiful. They also used to provide the etymology of the words to better understand the meaning which they do not do anymore. Unfortunately I will not be renewing my subscription. It’s not worth the money.

❤️ this. Some days I forget, or don’t want to learn a new word... and other days I want to learn at least 10! The “popular words” and personal “favourites” lists in the app allow you to be flexible in how you average “1 word a day” 🙃

Not very complex. I like the concept and tried the trial premium version but I won’t subscribe because the issue I have is that no matter what words I select on setup, the words that come up every day are still very common and I haven’t yet come across one I didn’t know - and it’s been a few weeks. Something to consider would be having a difficulty setting for the premium version - that’s something I’d pay for.

Enhanced metal performance!. Our mind is built on language without Out we wouldn’t be able to think....

So weird and glitchy. Does not work well

Always demanding upgrades. Constantly nagging and throwing-up barriers to workflow, to upgrade. Creates a very poor user experience at entry level, and deters buying higher levels - will they just keep nagging and interrupting workflow?

Perfect for defining and recording new words. I wanted an app where I could look up words I come across in everyday life, find their definition and record them for future reference. This app does exactly that. It gives a "word of the day", or you can search for your specific word then favourite it with a little star. Perfect.

Horrible update. New update is horrible. Focused on quirky pictures rather than word.

Bad in many ways. The widget takes too much space and doesn’t use it. When you click on the widget, it doesn’t show you the word it’s on the screen. The words are really not that useful.

Amazing App, Amazing Customer Service. Me and my family were looking for a way to expand our vocabulary this summer, and i stumbled across this app. I had mistakenly read that it included family plans (which they don’t have yet), and bought a year, thinking it would share to my family. I contacted support and they respond quick! They helped me out a lot, they were super supportive. The words are also really good to expand vocabulary, and premium adds fun ways to learn words.

Price. I can’t figure out how to change my settings to dedicate more than one minute a day and get more than one word a day. Additionally, it’s too expensive for an app that gives you only a word a day. I pay for quite a few apps and I’m happy to, but selective about which ones I actually are reflective of the value that they bring. I would love to have this app but paying the price charged just seems ridiculous.

Invasive ads ruin the app. When you go to view the word of the day you can’t get half way through until a full screen 30 second ad is forced on the screen. You can’t even look at the word of the day without an ad interrupting you. Minimal or banner ads are fine, this is unacceptable and I have to delete. There must be better alternatives.

Un-Skippable Premium Trial. The application forces you to take a 7-day trial of their premium plan without any option to skip. Instant NO for me. EDIT (2024/01/04): To be clear, I do not mind paying for a service that is of sufficient quality. I understand that there are costs to running a team of developers, illustrators, and other staff, but as a user, I should be allowed to have a feel of the application before I pay for it. I would prefer to be allowed to use the application for 07 days and then be asked to pay for the subscription should I want to continue using the application.

New update broke the app. This app broke after this update. Ain't working after restarting phone or closing. Deleted.

Completely overrun by adds.. This use to be a good little app, but the aggressive way they’ve added advertising is so annoying, I deleted the app.

Hate the new update. Don’t want to use the app after the update

Words Are Too Easy. I haven’t had that much trouble with ads, but I’m also not learning very much. The words are generally too basic, with a few random ones thrown in that haven’t been used in a century. I’ve had the app for over a month and I think I’ve learned about three new words. I wish there was a more advanced version.

Love it!. I love the fact that this app will say the word to you so that you know how to pronounce it! Super fun and easy to use

New update. Really really not a fan of the new update, much preferred when it was 1 new word a day, I found that much better for building vocabulary. You still always had the option to discover new words if you wanted to. If it’s not broke don’t fix it.

Ads with premium subscription. I don't know why I keep getting ads appearing with premium subscription purchased.

Super cool. The concept, design and UI is amazing. The free version is very limited, though. And it doesn’t help that a lot of the words are weird specific medical terms that I will never use. I’d love to get the paid version but $12 a month is absolutely insane. Like, kind of criminal.

Uggggghhhhh. Too many, too long adds. Also, you have to pay??? Are you kidding me? I have to pay to sit here and watch adds and sometimes listen to some random voice that will tell me some random word that I’m probably never going to use. This app was a good idea but with bad execution. Would not recommend.

Word a Day. Absolutely the best app for learning new words of the English language!

Muy Bueno Pero….:. La aplicación definitivamente provee de un vocabulario y antecedentes lingüísticos de palabras más inusuales o cultas , sin embargo suele regularmente bloquearse la aplicación y hay que reiniciar la aplicación, es un problema que sucede regularmente, por lo demás es buena, da la sensación de que no les importa mantener su operación después de vendida

Bad updates. The app keeps on changing. I loved the first edition and now it’s changed and keeps deleting my progress.

Why. Update is weird and clustered. Hate the change to the widget where the focus is not the word

I miss the version before the update. I miss being able to search words and find out what they mean and I miss the word search puzzle it’s still good but I miss some of the old features :(

Ads. The ads are way too long, loud and annoying! Has me looking for a different option. Waiting 30 seconds for the ad to end feels like an eternity especially when they are super obnoxious ones

Racist. The app itself is informative and put together well however iv noticed the illustrations that go with some definitions come across as racist. there has been serval images this is not a 1 time thing. The word of the day today was ‘Revile’ defined as “To use abusive speech due to anger or hatred”. The supported picture is a angry white man yelling at a upset black man for walking over his garden. Another example iv found was the word ‘listless’ defined as “lacking interest or motivation” the illustration support with this is a family of black people sitting around a kitchen table. These are only 2 examples out of many, iv tried reaching out to the support team for the app and never heard anything back.

Not even sensible. Just a money grab actually. Certainly not something useful

Simply love it!. Thank you for this amazing app! I love it.

Ads. Too much ads. It takes long time to read the definition of the word. You guys just lost one user with your desire to earn more bucks!

Great!. It’s a great little app that looks amazing, is organized in a helpful way and for free. It’s become part of my daily habits.

Word of the Day is amazing. I’m learning so many words through this app and love the illustrations. I’m enjoying the albums feature and all the features.

Please fix the app. Nothing comes up when I open the app. Response to developer: why would I redownload an app where the developers take 357 days to respond to my review? I don’t have any faith that any future issues will be resolved in a timely manner and I’ve long since found a different app that meets my needs.

Wrong grammar and spelling mistakes. That’s pretty embarrassing for an app that is supposed to help you learn more vocabulary. They wrote “when you WHERE 8 years old” instead of “when you WERE 8 years old”. They also used the phrase “went TO a trip” instead of “went ON a trip”. Thank god I didn’t pay for this app.

A once great app now ruined.. It’s a pity because this used to be one of my favourite apps to just learn new words. It’s been completely changed to make it gamify and make it a chore to even uncover a single word and pressure you into upgrading to premium and in its current format has lost all its value for me. I’m going to find another app that actually does what it claims.

Annoying app. Too many notifications and not strong enough words

Not worth the money. Yes, it has great UI, but it’s insane to pay a $60 annual fee to get a word per day and $13 for each album. Switch to free app for word of day🫣🫣

Not worth it. I don’t know why I paid for this. The UI and marketing were great. The app itself is less than impressive. Use word of the day screensaver instead. The paid for version is a waste of money if I’ve ever seen one.

Insane amount of Ads. This will crash ur phone - don’t get it there r other better ones

Great. This app is great for extending your vocabulary to extraordinary measures but please add a feature where you can search a word and see the meaning thank you.

Newest Update. I dont know why you made the changes you did, it’s extremely combersome and I can’t easily look back at the previous words. Seriously if it’s not broke don’t fix it.

It’s nice but not sure it’s worth the money. Why are things still locked after paying? It’d be much better if after you become a premium all words are unlocked.

Won’t let you skip out of ads. I paid for the subscription, but it still won’t let me skip ads and I’d have to restart the app sometimes. I can’t even look at the word sometimes. Not worth the money imo

Great Customer support. I absolutely love this app🤗🥰😆 I never pay for an app and after having this app for a year (with 1 minor glitch) which was sorted out and fixed with excellent customer support. I decided that I just had too go for the premium. It’s a great conversation starter too. I have friends that out of no where will ask me for the word of the day. Or send me words that they hear and think are unique and interesting. I love the pictures that go with it and the fact that you can hear what the word sounds like too is a bonus. 8/10 I usually say them right. Also the word search is awesome. I had a stroke 10years ago and got hooked on word searches to remember words so I just love it as well. I LOVE THIS APP. KEEP UP THE GREAT JOB and can’t wait to see what you guys come up with for your next update😆😆😆👏👏👏

W.T.F. I was thinking about using this app but after reading so many terrible reviews I decided against it. One of the benefits of using a “Premium” subscription is to avoid ads. Apparently this isn’t true with this particular app. I noticed a couple other things as well; 1- It’s only been the last year or so that the premium feature has added the ads obviously to make more money. (Greedy jerks) 2- It appears to be an auto generated response to the people that have, for obvious reasons, complained about the ads. This in itself is vulgar display of, “We really don’t care what you think of our app!” that I have ever seen! The developer should be ashamed of this but I know the only thing they’re doing is laughing all the way to the bank! I’m sure the app has a great premise but due to a terrible developer, I will NEVER use this app and no one ever should!

Too many ads. I used to love this app so much, but then added way too many ads and absolutely ruined the app, now I very rarely use it, and will be deleting if the excess ads continue

Changed the app. Apparently they’ve decided to change the app and take away the cute pictures for each daily word. Was probably the only reason I still had the app. Also, my widget no longer updates. Don’t like the changes at all, will probably delete..

Are u kidding me. They changed EVERYTHING!!!! They changed all of it, it was perfect in every way and so calming. It had word searches a nice pallet of colour and was calming! You could see the word of the day and it had all my favourite words I had saved from YEARS of using the app. Totally wiped none of my words where saved in the update and you can’t even see the daily word in the widget. I loved this app and they ruined it completely don’t get it ever they’d re the worst.

Love the app. Learning a lot. Love the app. Fun and easy to use. Learning a lot

Quality of App. Not useful words Relic words

The widget is broken. Was going to subscribe but then noticed that the widget is broken, as it never takes you to the word that it’s displaying. 😒

Ad of the day (BETTER OFF WITH A DICTIONARY). You are better off reading a dictionary with much better definitions, examples and sometimes the origin of the word. Plus there’s no ads that pop up after each word

Junk. TOO MANY ADS. Do NOT Download. Ads all the time. Devs should feel like crap for making such a worthless app. 🤬🤬🤬

Seriously? $60/yr for THIS!?. What is this world coming to. This is insane. Update: The developer is now responding with excuses for the insane pricing model.

App not working. Nothing is showing up. Once I get into the app, the only thing I can see is the settings section.

Would Be 5 star If.... 1 CRUCIAL Change (in my opinion) and this app would be perfect. REMOVE THE ADS!! I understand it generates revenue to support further development.. but seriously, I'm sure most would agree that paying we'd happily pay a few bucks to remove ads entirely. Only reason they're so annoying is the timing of it. you click the notifications for the word of the day and half way through reading the definition without fail every single time an 20 sec ad pops up. Which I found out rather quickly I can close the app and Google shortcut the definition in half the time it takes the ad to finish running. It's a great app but ads in general, let alone placed inconveniently are a deal breaker for me.

I like reviewing past words. Even ones I didn’t have the app when it came out. Since it doesn’t let you get more than one word a day, it was nice being able to scroll through the old ones. It’s also nice, over time, being able to go back. I usually read back a weeks worth of words to help them stick. Y’all do gotta fix your request to rate though. Just got it the second time, even though I already rated and reviewed... I didn’t even know that was possible, thought Apple blocked it?

A Vocabulary Builder That’s Fun and Educational. I absolutely love this app. It has easy to read and understand interface and backgrounds and is a great vocabulary builder that is fun and educational. I truly like the pronunciation feature as well and hope the developers expand this feature to include the speaker giving an etymology of the word and hearing the voice model read the example sentences as well. I would also really like the voice feature to include a choice among different accents from different countries

The update ruined it. This has honestly gone from my favorite to least favorite app overnight. I like having the word displayed on my Lock Screen but it’s a completely different word from any of them in the deck. I’ve also got a widget on my Home Screen that shows a yet another different word but when I tap on it, I don’t get the definition for that word I get yet another word. So to recap I’m being showed two words that I never get to find out the definition for - plus five other words even though I’m on the three word plan. I’ve removed and re-added the widget and updated the app with no luck. Also I haven’t seen one in a few days thankfully but the conversation feature was awful.

Word of the Day. I have really been enjoying this app. As a reader, books have been my main form of learning new words and building my vocabulary. The drawback to learning words from a book is that you’re not sure if you’re saying the word correctly. That is why I have enjoyed this app. Because I can hear how the word sounds. I actually have been using this app to build my daughters vocabulary as well.

Great. I like this app. I have this app on my phone and my iPad. It used to work great on both of my devices and both were showing exactly the same words every day. Then beginning of this year 2024 something went wrong and it is not as pretty and easy as it used to be . Now each device shows a different word and a few of choices in setting are not available any longer. Yet, it is still ok. The goal for me to just learn and I don’t need extra stuff

It’s better, I think. But now it looks like there are words missing. Like there are only 12 words for February, and it is the end of the 20th and no word has shown up for today. And one entire tab is given over to selling outrageously priced sets of words for $9.99 each. Seriously? I have 13 out of 15 words in a set and you want $9.99 to finish the set? What a weird development process on this app. That said, at least the art is amazing, and I appreciate the level of the vocabulary. Update: it’s now there 21st and a new word (benignity) showed up. But my meaningless streak reset to 1. Please give me the option back to turn off the stupid streak.

Word of the day is always the same. What I mean is the app makes you think it’s adjusting the vocabulary based on your level but it gives every user the exact same word of the day no matter what level you’re at. Sure there is a flash card thing but it’s incredibly basic, free apps have better motivation and visual style. I like the word of the day cards and I was trying to do them with my daughter but she’s discouraged now because words like panoptic, whorl, rubicund, and fluvial are not helping her in any way and are just words people learn as a party trick. Even high level reading doesn’t use nonsense like that for the most part.

Nice app with some annoyances. Disclaimer: I use the ‘free’ version of this app. The positives: the app is appealing and easy to use, and I like the quirkiness of some of the words. Now to explain why my rating is missing two stars: I’ve been using this app for quite some time, and I must admit my satisfaction with it has dropped over time. In previous versions, I’d have to sit through a portion of an ad to get my word, which is fine. Then I started getting prompts almost every time I opened the app for the ad-free premium version. In essence, I was receiving an ad after the ad. Then they started doing videos for words on Wednesdays. I don’t want a video, I just want a word-a-day and its definition. A minor annoyance on Wednesdays except for the new prompts asking if I’ve viewed the weeks video on days other than Wednesday. Today I had to tap through 3 ‘ads’ just to get to the word. If this keeps up, I’d wager that my annoyance will just keep building until I uninstall the app.

Great app, for what it’s meant to do (new word daily).. I wish it had some form of a daily recollection feature, where you were given the definition of a previously covered word, and a list of words to match from (multiple choice). Or the opposite, you’re given a word and multiple succinct definitions. This would help cement further the previous/covered term in the minds of users. Having this feature, I believe, would elevate this app past a “limited dictionary” function, to a more practical/helpful tool for developing a broader vocabulary.

Best Out There. Although this app has an friendly-user app features, I give it a four out of five because I wish that the notifications would be displayed with the definitions instead of having to log into the app. I know that sounds lazy but I’ll be in class when I get the notifications and I see the word and have no idea what it means. If it were to be displayed like somewhere with my reminders or with the complete definition, I could review it throughout the day and learn the word. But it’s a great app, you can recommend words and you can like them and come back to them. Overall a really good app, I’ve learned a lot of new words. 🥺☺️

The best Vocabulary App. Each word of the day is so relevant for intelligent effective communication. Words will help you sound like a genius. Great for advanced communication at work can bring your vocabulary up to Doctorate levels great for high school, college, masters level, PHD entrance exams. For avid readers also. Truly easy fast and fun to use daily. Illustrations accurately and brilliantly describes and depicts vocabulary words and focus’s your attention on words and makes memorization easier. This app is worth every penny it cost.

One of my FAV apps 💌. Always adds a quirky and informational twist to my mornings...Like if I'm annoyed or depressed by something completely irrelevant, or if I'm just bored and waiting for the morning train, this app always snaps me out of being a moody disaster. - Plus, being a "book nerd," I always had prided myself on verbosity, having a hugh SAT score, and knowing my words and all that etc. --- until this app surprised me and still does about once a month with words which I never knew before! 🧐😻

Great app but could use a little extra something. This is a great app for learning a new word every day. With a click of a button you can hear how the word is pronounced which is nifty. You can even add this app to your widgets on your phone! One thing I would like to see though is the definition and pronunciation become accessible right from the widgets section on the phone without needing to open the app itself when clicking “read definition”. That would be a great improvement on an already great app!

The ads make the app not worth using. To give anyone an idea what the app is like using as a free user: The notification pops up. I open the app and try to read the word and definition quickly before the almost one minute long ad takes over. Most of the time, I don’t finish reading before the ad and I can either 1. Wait almost one minute for the ad to finish. 2. Close out the app and be frustrated. Most people casually using the app will probably choose to close it. Just not worth it. I understand that apps are not free to run and maintain, but the ads make the experience for a free user awful. This is the worst one I’ve seen which is why I’m choosing to write a review. Just start charging to download the app.

USED TO Be Great. Now it’s more ads than learning new words. Sure, there’s an “ad-free” version which actually has a monthly/yearly subscription (you really think it would be a one-time fee), but without that you’re met with an ad every time you load it up. And not a short ad! The last few times I went to give this app another chance, I was forced to sit through a 30-some second ad. Once that’s over, you can try to click the tint X in the corner, which is of course designed to make you accidentally click outside the X, and head to the ad’s own app page. Used to be a great app for learning new words every day; now nothing more than frustration and disappointment.

Advancing Your own vocabulary. I’ve always been interested in the English language. About 4-5 yrs ago, something happened to cause me to lose some of my memory. I found myself asking what the simplest words meant, and also how to spell them. I got a lot of my memory back over time, but not all of it. This app has been a blessing! My 25 yr old Son loves it too. He believes everyone should always push to advance their own vocabulary. So thank you very much.

Scam Artists - Avoid at all Cost. When I downloaded this app it had some limited free options and a paid yearly subscription to unlock all features. I purchased the subscription because I want to increase my vocab. Every few weeks they completely change the interface and remove features. You used to be able to save words to curated lists at the click of a button on the home screen. Then they made it so you had to look up individual words to add them. Now you can’t do it at all. You get only one word per day and they introduced packs of words hiding behind ANOTHER paywall. Even if you have a subscription, like me, to access certain words you have to pay to buy a pack of curated adjectives, nouns and verbs. It’s heinous. Do not make the mistake I did.

Full screen ads make app content impossible to view.. This app used to be wonderful & I faithfully checked it every day. At some point recently they added full screen ads, & it’s been really hard to use the app since. You open the app to view the “Word of the Day” and can see it for maybe a second before a full screen ad pops up, blocking everything. Today I got an ad that I couldn’t exit out of without watching the whole thing & that was the final straw for me. I get needing ad revenue, and I’d be fine with ads at the bottom of the screen, but I’m not particularly thrilled about not even being able to see the content of the app when I open it.

Can’t find the words. I had a stroke and the most difficult thing was trying to find word or words that you wanted to say to express how you felt about a particular person, place or thing and or even because you simply are just stuck back in time and don’t know how to recall simple vocabulary words etc. and it gets deeper. September 14th at 11:54 is I don’t know how much later than I wrote the first paragraph which could have been one to two yes but it one of the best apps I have downloaded

Disappointed with this update. App was fine before. Simple, intuitive, I could just add a widget and glance at it when I wanted to see a new word in the morning (or whenever I had time). Now there’s some kind of “streak” involved. This isn’t some social media app. Why would I care about a streak for glancing at new words? Why can’t I just look at it when convenient (or maybe not)? Why do developers feel the need to update things beyond what something like a word a day app would ever need? Removed from phone. Hopefully one of the other ones in the App Store understands the reasons people use their app and don’t add all the garbage and fluff.

Is all lost.. or just my 164 acts of dedication?. This app has great words and great visuals but I just lost my 195 day streak. It says my longest streak is 164 days and current is 31 days. I have reminders to flip over the card that inform me daily at 9pm and I know that I was at 194 yesterday. Please fix this frustrating issue or remove the streak counter from the application entirely. I wasn’t planning on stopping until I got every word they would give me but now it’s lost all meaning. I guess I do need validation :( If this problem is resolved and my almost 200 day streak is returned I will gladly give this app 5 stars. Thank you developers, thank you concerned consumers.

Love it:). Okay, so I’ve been wanting to expand my vocabulary, and this is THE app to do so. You can search words, and it gives you a definition. Not only that, but I get a new word PER day. So every day, when I’m writing a chapter to my book, and I get the notification, I often use the word. You’ll sound super smart compared to all your friends too! You can impress your peers, and keep exploring new things with this app. Also, it gives you an example so you don’t misunderstand or misuse the word, which really helps in my writings.

Disappointed in most recent update. When i saw that they updated the app and made it more responsive, i was glad but i knew something was up. Now they’ve removed the all words list unless you pay for premium; they’ve removed the word crossword game, which is the reason why u downloaded the app; you can’t go back 10 calendar words without paying for premium. You’re essentially confined to the 10 random words you get everyday, most of which could be entirely useless. There’s other ways to try and get subscriptions than completely removing current services or putting them behind a paywall. This just makes me want to leave the app entirely, which i probably will.

Overall, pretty awesome.. I like how simple the app is, but yet it still has good information. It’s easy to navigate. I really like how the words given are words I can actually use in my day to day life. I don’t always use the words I learn through this app, but I enjoy learning them anyways. One small request: It would be nice if the app would remind me of the same word multiple times each day. Repeated exposure tends to lead to better retention and potential future usage. Ideally, I would have the option to set the reminder frequency and times for each reminder through the day. Some people only want one reminder/day. I’d like to have 4 or 5. Once when I wake up, mid morning, lunch, early afternoon, evening. That way, I can think of ways to use the word with different stimuli throughout the day. Again, all these reminders would be for the same word. Not 4 or 5 new words every day. Thanks! Good work guys! Keep it up!

WOTD. Everything was perfectly fine I had my learned/still in process of learning vocabulary in monthly order and would check those out daily, then they updated AGAIN and changed the layout of almost everything, app is solid but they seem to update quite a bit and change things that did not need changed now it’s harder for me to study my vocabulary that I previously discovered and it gives me 5 new words daily to learn which for me is too much, wish it would just stay how it was when it was working, at least for me

Like It!. This is a great little app! I love that I can review as many words as I want! Even words that were posted long before I began using the app. The words are practical. Sometimes, they are too easy, but most are words that well spoken people are able to use comfortably. Thanks for the refreshers- and mix of interesting new words! My only concern is that the sentences do not always provide strong examples of how the word would really be used. They are helpful, but they certainly could be better. They often sound forced, like they are written by a student who is just learning the word, too.

Expand your vocabulary without the pure pressure!. I enjoy the freedom of learning without the pressure of society(or in my case high school), to try to force me learn as swiftly as I can. This app gives me the privilege to expand my vocabulary without that pure pressure. I’m learning new words everyday, and it gives me a sense of pride knowing that I’m capable of achieving my short term goals. If someone would have told me that this app was free and available to anyone years ago , I wouldn’t have hesitated to download it that day! 😄

Horrible PAID app. Go get the Webster Dictionary app for FREE. I got the app because it was a fun way to learn new vocabulary. The pictures you see in the app preview is now FALSE ADVERTISEMENT. The new update completely ruined made it completely limited and TOOK AWAY THE PICTURES THAT THEY SHOW MADE IT FUN and made it completely purchase based. There is no longer a visual that comes with the words which made it 10x easier to learn. They want you to pay $10 a month IN THIS ECONOMY?!?!?! Or $50 A YEAR To have access to all words and maybe some pictures other wise you get a single word a day???? Just download the Merriam Webster dictionary where you have access to ALL their words and PUZZLES for FREE. You can pay $5 A YEAR for no ads.

Helped prepare me for AP Test. I will be taking the AP Literature and Composition Test in May, and this app has allowed me to have a wider vocabulary that I can use on the test. Learning new vocabulary is important to vary your language in essays and to better understand whatever you are reading. The AP Test loves to use elevated language, so knowing a lot of words before going in to take the test is very beneficial. I highly recommend this app for people who need to work on increasing their mental word bank :)

A good word-of-the-day product. I know all of the dictionary products have word-of-the-day sections. I enjoy those. Often times, they feature words that won’t ever come up in conversations, infrequently in books or articles, and sometimes words you may never run across (e.g. archaic Scottish dialect). This app provides words that, depending on your vocabulary, may or may not know. The likelihood of these coming up in conversation is high and if you read much, maybe inevitable. I like to use it as a “poke in the shoulder” to re-remember words that I may have dropped from my vocabulary.

Excellent Vocab App. Of all the miscellaneous methods of learning vocabulary that I’ve tried over the years, Word of the Day is by far the best. It utilizes the principles of curiosity, attention, visualization, real-life exemplification, multiplicity of connections and storytelling to get vocabulary to stick in the user’s memory. No other resource that I’ve seen does this, and the results are remarkable. Within minutes, a new word becomes memorable for me and can be utilized easily. Can’t recommend enough.

Easier to keep learning. Thanks to apps such as this one! It's also simple & fun lol to use. I love the ❤️ feature that lets you favorite words you happen to like. Another cool feature is the ability to see how much likes a word gets under the popular feature of the app. The random word generator is also a good way to pass the time & beef lol up your vocabulary! No reason to pass up this download unless of course you have hijacked someone else's brain and he or she knows all these words or if you just know everything already! Yup!

Very good!. I’ve always had a bigger vocabulary, so I was happily surprised to find this app! So far, it’s introduced me to even more words than I knew before I downloaded it. I do have one little critique, though— there should be an option to have the daily notifications include the meaning of the word along with the word of the day. I think it would be a convenient little addition. It would also be pretty nifty if it were possible to have “favorited” words split into nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Otherwise, this app is really wonderful, and I wholly recommend it to anyone with an affinity for linguistics! :)

This app is awesome. This app is awesome, it’s really helped me to be able to recall words better than I could before. What makes this app so helpful is that you not only see the word, but you also hear it, and you see it in a sentence which is helpful and a lot of apps don’t do that. I also like that i can favorite all the words that I wanna remember so I can just quickly go back and review them instead of having to write them all down. Word of the day has really helped me with my vocabulary. Thanks a lot!!

Phenomenal…. Use this app daily because it’s fun to use. Each word has a corresponding drawing (great quality) that gives one an image in addition to the textual definition & an audible pronunciation. One feature I really like is the ability to add words to user defined categories. As a geek, being able to categorize words & save them to my dictionary provides another way to look at all the words that belong to a category such as ‘behavior’, ‘situations’, etc

GLITCH TO FIX. once I erase the black that is covering today's word a marketing pop up appears saying "we have a gift for you" (the gift being you're asking me to pay you for a premium version) in order to get rid of the gift pop up I tap somewhere on screen behind it so that it closes. however, after closing the pop up the word is now hidden in black again and now the app is frozen and you're unable to reveal the word or click on any thing else within the app, such as the profile icon below. basically your marketing pop up is freezing your app which happens daily and is pretty annoying.

Love it but room for improvement. I have been using this app for several months now and I share the daily words with my coworkers. It’s actually fun to see what new vocabulary will come up and compete to use the word of the day in conversation on the same day. However, the example sentences leave much to be desired. The phrase “use it in a sentence” should be using it realistically as a way to describe something that happens but often this sentence is just more definition of the word. I suggest pulling from literature, quoting good works where the vocabulary is actually used so people can better understand how to use it in a sentence.

Love it!. This app has really helped me over the past year expand my vocabulary. I intend to continue my use of it. The daily word of the day is helpful and the interface which allows you to save/store certain words to go back to is hugely helpful. The adds were minimal in the beginning but have become annoying post 2020. Having said that I can deal with one add but two is a bit much. I hope they will minimize it to maybe one. All in all I can’t complain about much especially since it is a very useful app that helps exercise the brain.

Five-Dollar Words!!. I have always been one to be fascinated with language, so I decided to download this app to improve my vocabulary. I absolutely adore it! Every day I get a cute little message defining a word, and there’s even an option to hear how it’s pronounced (this is infinitely helpful for me, especially). On top of that, the app is so easy to use, I was almost convinced I’d have to pay for extra services; luckily, I don’t. I don’t know who made the app but I’d like to thank them for getting me excited about my word of the day!

Useful. Love the illustrations and detail. However, the subscription is more expensive than other similar apps. In addition, even with the subscription some features are not available unless you purchase them. Very disappointed with that fact. I’d recommend downloading for the free trial and immediately going to your apple subscriptions and canceling the subscription so you don’t fall into the trap and forget 7 days later and restore the subscription if you believe it’s worth for me it isn’t though. Hope this helps

Respect. I think I am starting to earn just a bit of respect with the people around me for they are intellectual elitists. When I use the the words I've learned from this they have a hard time understanding what I am saying. When I explain, they begin to think that I am smart. I'm smart, however, it is difficult for them to see beyond their wants. But when something displays a challenge, they try to solve it. If it gives them a bit of a hard time, they respect it. This app has allowed me to gain respect from them in that sense.

Not a rip off, but not that good. I thought this would be nice to have. Something different and a learning tool for a young student. The word challenge was the item that convinced me to spend the money and get a year subscription. Well that feature does not work at all and student would like his money back. However, the links to the developer to request a refund or help about using that feature does not work either Part 2—developers responded to my concern. I use my IPad in locked horizontal mode. If I want to use word search feature i have to go and change it in settings to unlock it and use iPad vertically.

Ads are too obtrusive. I understand how free apps work, but being forced to wait 30 seconds just to see the meaning of a word doesn't seem worth it. I already know what the word is...in that amount of time I can just look it up in a free dictionary without the frustration. There are other free apps that obviously took much more time and work to program (complicated games, etc. versus just curating a collection of words) that have much less intrusive ads. If I could close out of the ad right away, or they used ad banners or something that I can click only if I'm interested instead of being forced, it might be worthwhile. As is I am uninstalling this immediately.

I love this app!. This app is great. Sometimes a word will pop up that you’ve heard of, but aren’t quite sure of the actual meaning, and it’s nice then to actually be able to use it appropriately. And then more often than that, a word will come up that you’ve never heard, and you find out how many words truly make up the English language. I’m really surprised with how many new words that I’ve learned through this. It’s great. Learning a new word every day is helpful on so many levels! A++!

Perfect. Exactly what I wanted. Each day, a new word. I love that along with each word, not only comes with the definition and an example sentence, but it also has a feature that will actually speak the word. This is what makes it perfect IMO. So, if you want to use the word in the future, you can rest easy knowing that you’re pronouncing it correctly. And, the vast majority of TE words are actually “usable”. Not completely obscure and basically useless, but actually practical.

Paid customer yet they stopped my alerts. Absolutely shocked to receive a notification stating my daily alert would stop after I didn’t check it for a couple of days (I was healing from a wrist injury). I pay for this service, which includes the alert. My services should not be compromised. I think it would be better if users received the word of the day as part of the notification. The current setup is that you have to login to the app and then hold your finger down on the screen for several seconds while a picture forms- if you have any type of injury or physical impairment- this will become a pain to do (both literally and figuratively ). Don’t bother with this app

Amazing app. I just finished writing a long review of how much I enjoyed this app. How a word is so much more… as always my battery died and I lost it ;( But please don't miss the simple yet profound way of learning new words that can change your everyday life. This app does that for me in such an easy manner. It's there every day, it's up to me if I read them. Oh, but when I do, I can spend hours enjoying catching up. This app is…in one word, and my word of the day, … extraordinary

Great app! Increase your vocabulary today!!!. This is a great app! You receive one word a day. It has a favorites feature which I like because I can mark the words that I think I will use. Most of the words are not words that I would be able to use in conversation. I have saved a few so far that I will use. UPDATE: App is still good but the feature to say the word quit working! What's up with that? Important feature when you don't know the word.

Something weird happened. When I woke up this morning, the app was different. The cool artwork that accompanied each word was gone, as was my streak! I LOVED the artwork because I have a widget with the word and the artwork catches my eye throughout the day when I’m on my phone, and now it’s just blue and white. Also, I had a streak of like 120 and it’s gone! I’m unsure if this was because of a new update or if something else is going on, in my history all of my cards are still there with the artwork that accompanied them. The word of today, “roil” is to make someone annoyed, and if the changes today were just like a prank or something to accentuate that, then it succeeded. Very irritated.
