OED. In my junior year of high school we read many short stories in our English prep class. As you read and came across a word that wasn’t clear you were to write it down. Those were accumulated and researched by three fellow students that were given one free point toward their grade. They were to define the word using only the OED paying close attention to the context, date included since word meanings can change in time, of the word in question. This averaged 625 words every two weeks. We would then have either “33”s or “25”s where three 33s would make up a test grade or four 25s. We were excited to have the 33s as that meant we were given a free point. The test was administered when she felt it was time so you would walk in to see either 33 or 25 words written on the chalk board. Misspelling a word within your answer’s definition would cost you seven points and misspelling the word to be defined cost you nine points. Yes, you could get a negative test grade number. The OED was Beulah B. Harper’s “bible” and we came to use it in all of our subjects’ research text lists complete with footnotes to the point that we had memorized all the footnote basics of the OED because it was used so many times. To this day I still use it as the definitive answer to settle definition disputes. - JJBJr

D-tier. The dictionary is extensive, and it has a great interface. It is very easy to navigate, making it simple to do things. However, unless you subscribe for a price, you are relegated to seeing only one word. Not to mention, you won’t be able to use features like audio or offline use. This system makes it nigh unusable, as there are so many alternatives like google, which work the majority of words. Even if they had a one-time purchase model, unlimited words without certain features, or even all the features with ads, it would be better than this.

I enjoy it, but a few issues.. Paid for ad free, and lately have been inundated with annoying ads. This has happened before. Old comment: After the most recent update, the app force closes. For me, it cannot be opened at all. —————————————- Old comment: Paid for the premium version. I enjoy the dictionary, but the voices that pronounce the words are not very clear, they sound muffled and that doesn’t help with learning the correct pronunciation of the words. Also, the notification for the word of the day is not always the word of the day. Sometimes a different word is presented, than what was on the notification.

Some poor app design issues. I purchased the full app. For the most part, it’s what you’d expect...I wanted a convenient dictionary without adds, and available offline...and so Oxford received my money. My two gripes are: 1) The Oxford splash screen at startup is too long. Seriously, their logo sits there while opening much longer than any other game or app I’ve ever seen. I already purchased your app, so please do away with the needless marketing - I almost purchased another dictionary over Oxford because of this, but that would just be silly. 2) I prefer to use this app in offline mode (quicker, who knows what apps are trying to download in the background, etc). However, I’ve found that a number of words I come across to look up, are not in the offline dictionary; only available once online - and then are not maintained offline after being looked up. Just a bit perplexing that the app doesn’t have a more robust offline dictionary - or at a minimum adds in new content/searches...it’s just text and phones/tablets have plenty of storage...c’mon Oxford, this really shouldn’t be an issue.

The English language.. I do not subscribe to the contention that there are several versions of the English language, (American, Australian etc). English is English, and it is either correct English, or incorrect English. Americans consistently corrupt the language, both written and spoken, contending that “American” English is an established and legitimate version of the English language. I contend that the OED is the only complete source of correct English. I further contend that Merriam Wester is a source of corrupt written and spoken English, which has been erroneously adopted by the American people as a separate and legitimate version of the English language.

WAS Better than googling-updated (from 5 stars to 1). Used to be great app! That’s why I PAID FULL PRICE FOR IT 6 MONTHS AGO. Imagine my frustration when all of the sudden it glitches with an only fix being uninstalling and reinstalling...which COMES WITH SUPER ANNOYING CONSTANT ADDS!!!, the fix? PAY FOR IT AGAIN!!! SAME PRICE! Ripping customers off gets you downgraded in your reviews. That’s not rocket science. When you pay for something you don’t expect to be BILLED FOR IT AGAIN IN A FEW MONTHS! I pay for something (say, a printer) and it conveniently breaks in 2 1/2 years, after the 2 year warranty expires, I do buy another whatever (printer)...but NOT from the same brand. Same principle applies. Dishonesty doesn’t pay in the long run. Sooo...MobiSystems on my “don’t support again” list...along with Brother printers. Ain’t word of mouth enlightening? Rocket science.

Search option needs help!. Definitions are short and clear. The layout is good. However, one very important characteristic of a dictionary is to help the user find a particular word, he/she may or may not already know. For example, sometimes I do not know how to spell the word I’m searching for, so I use the Oxford Dictionary to find it. Your spell-check algorithm is not optimal; word options disappear quickly as I enter the few first letters I try! After a few good attempts, I give up, then google it! Clearly, Oxford needs a better search algorithm. By the way, I use your app rather than Google because I need one clear and concise definition, not millions of options and sponsored ads.

Oxford comes to you.. I've always regarded the OED as the be all and end all of English language dictionaries, therefore it has been my favourite for as long as I can remember, it may have been the fact that you need a magnifying glass to read the print in the two volumes of the standard print edition and that one was included in a little drawer in the top of the case! Of course, how many people do you know that have a favourite dictionary? Yes, I'm a giant geek/nerd. 🤓 Anyway, this app is as close as you can get to owning the physical version of the dictionary. It has all of the wonderful little details and assists that the print version has, of course, without the magnifier, though you can use the triple-tap option on your iPhone to magnify the entry if you need it. The app is a bit on the pricey side, especially if you opt in on the translator add-on, but, as with the print version, the Oxford English Dictionary is worth whatever you spend on it. I love that I can look up obscure or unusual words and the OED has them listed! I truly loathe trying to locate the definition of a word that I've come across in my current novel and it's unavailable!! It then becomes a quest to locate the true definition, if not the etymological origins, of a particular word. Being someone who loves and collects words, the OED is the perfect resource for someone like me!😁 I think that the OED app is worth every cent that one decides to put into it. So, what do I say? Splurge!!🤑

Disappointing. I bought this primarily to replace my old Oxford Spanish Dictionary app, hoping to be able to use the English dictionaries as well as benefit from an updated application. The other dictionaries are all there but honestly, unless you speak or are learning multiple languages, there isn’t much need for all those other language dictionaries. The. Oxford Dictionary of English is most definitely not the OED. Not only is it abridged but all the quotes and archaic meanings are also not included. It’s really just another good but limited dictionary of English. I am still very happy to have the Oxford Spanish Dictionary on my tablet. In my experience it is one of the best in terms of content and thoroughness, capturing the various nuances of usage in both English and Spanish. The biggest disappointment with the new application is the slowness of the response. Not only do you have to go through the effort to pick your dictionary but with the foreign languages you then must pick the direction for translation and then type in your search word. Then the response from the dictionary is very slow, it can take several seconds for the application to respond with matching terms. The older interface was much faster. It appears that making the application all inclusive slowed everything down by an order of magnitude.

Another app bites the dust. 1/2/21: After my below review, I received a very kind response from a developer. I want to thank the developer for taking the time to respond and explain the need for the new cost. While it’s unfortunately unwise for low income high debt folks like myself to purchase nonessential apps with monthly subscriptions, I do understand the need sometimes to generate income for projects that I can imagine may be time consuming to maintain, perhaps including this excellent English dictionary. So I raised my score from 1 to 3 stars. Ideally there’s a win win solution for people like me, yet understand. Peace. ———— (Earlier reviews): My below review is no longer true since I now must pay to look up more than just one word. Pathetic. After several satisfying years, I feel disgusted and deleted it at once. I feel very grateful for this excellent dictionary app. It far surpasses the others I’ve used, mainly by including words not included in others. And to have such a resource literally at my fingertips for free is an amazing blessing. Thank you!

Charging for pronunciation...🤔. Great dictionary good app with good features and functions(if you pay). But you lost me by charging a subscription to a dictionary app. Not a one time fee which would be justifiable. On top of that you can’t select the text so that the phone itself can dictate the words. It’s price gouging and it’s has me furious 🤬🤬. For you guys to charge $3 a month or $20 a year for something you can go to google and search up or your phone built in dictionary is ludicrous. I understand we live in a capitalist society, but this type of up charging and micro transactions scamming needs to cease and be written into law to stop this behavior from these tech companies.

Great but ads. I like the word of the day feature, and there also a few other features I’d like to try but don’t feel compelled to because of the short 3 day trial to access the premium plan. The ads are annoying and irrelevant. There are three levels of pricing and they seem confusing because I’m unable to decipher whether they recurring fees or one-time fees. One-time fees would make sense to me in this case; why would I spend $30 or $40 a year on a dictionary that I can pay $30 or $40 for in a single instance for and for a physical copy A longer trial period would be helpful as some of the premium features are not clear and 3 days is not enough time to try it all and make an informed decision as to whether the recurring cost seems fitting.

Love it!. UPDATED UPDATE: I updated to a new phone and the app works just fine. I just needed to restore the purchase within the app. All the reviewers who said it had to be repurchased were not correct. UPDATE: Bought the upgrade and still love it! Highly recommend! Best dictionary ever, and you CAN take it with you. This is a wonderful app. I am sorely tempted to overuse adjectives and exclamation marks in describing it. I do recommend it. It is very useful, takes up no shelf space, gathers no dust, and you can take it with you everywhere you go.

shockingly brief. I thought the OED was known for including more etymology and history than other dictionaries. This only has a couple of the most common definitions of a word and no additional information. I want to know the root words, I want to know historical uses and definitions. I want to know how they are used in a philosophical, religious or other context which might have a unique or particular meaning. This doesn’t even include example sentences, related words or synonyms…. I got this thinking that if I downloaded and paid for an app which is exclusively a dictionary, it would be more in-depth than the website. This has less information than a simple google search. Very disappointing. The only use this app has imo is functionality without internet.

Somewhat disappointed. I am a lifelong fan of the Oxford Dictionaries, and have several in-print versions in my home. Although I searched the app store for "offline dictionaries" and this app cameup in the search, be aware that offline mode requires purchase of the premium version. I have read in other reviews that the premium version still has ads. The developer seems to think it is OK to advertise ITS OWN products even in the "ad-free" premium version. That is unacceptable, so I will not be "upgrading" to the premium version. The free version works fine, and the definitions and reference materials are terrific, as you would expect from the OED. However, the screen is definitely junky and distracting. Oxford should clean up its act and user interface, and give prospective users the same professional clarity about features and pricing that they do in their definitions.

The Gold Standard in dictionaries. I regard this dictionary as my go-to resource especially for those words that are not listed in other dictionaries. The definitions are clear with examples and I love the additional button you can press to hear the pronunciation. I have both then book form and the App version for convenience. I like to save all the words I am learning on the App with the like button for later referral. Quite simply, I can’t be without this Oxford dictionary App! It is 100% worth the investment for one’s scholarly needs.

Very useful, but too expensive. The definitions are considerably more complete than the Merriam-Webster app. I think that the subscription price at $20/year is pretty steep. It should be less than half that. I’ve seen some complaints about the word-of-the-day choices but I think they’re perfect. Every one of them is a word that I’d like to use in everyday business or casual conversation. That makes them far more valuable to me than some obscure word that I might only have the opportunity to use a few times because few others would recognize them. They are all words that we learned in school and know their basic meanings but forgot were available to us. Good job there, ODE!

Oxford English Dictionary. The Oxford English Dictionary application is a solid resource for those who want to look up the definition of a word. Along with the meaning users will also receive derivatives of the word such as an adverb or some other example further illustrating the intent of the definition. Users can also save words they like as favorites and access word of the day which can be helpful to broadening one’s vocabulary. The app offers additional features in the premium version such as audio pronunciation but the the standard model does a good enough job for those who just want a mobile dictionary in hand.

App is now totally nonfunctional. I have been using this Oxford dictionary daily for quite some time. Recently the dictionary has become unusable. I have the free version I did not pay for an upgrade to premium. Recently when I try to look up a word I am given a prompt to upgrade which I decline. It will not take no for an answer and will not give me the definition that I am seeking. Today when I tried to look up a word the prop came up nine times in a row and I decided I was wasting my time with this app. One of the features that this dictionary charges extra for is pronunciation. Not only is pronunciation free on other apps it’s also available on the Oxford website without charge. The lack of pronunciation is a basic feature is also a big minus for this app. I gave the app a one star because that was the only choice. It really should be a zero because the dictionary app does not give definitions anymore and is relentless intrusive invasive and will not take no for an answer repeatedly. I rarely write reviews for apps. This is the only app I have ever had were the offer of a premium upgrade is met with total obstruction of the function of the app rendering is totally non-functional.

THE OED. I have found this edition of the OED online/offline app to be extremely helpful as well as being very useful. To date I have found every word that I have been looking for, as well as some I was not looking for. It is extremely useful that on occasion when I cannot spell a word that all I need do is to say it and there it is. Having been educated in England, my spelling is British. But once in a while I forget the precise spelling. Overall I find the OED to be better than any American dictionary. I also own several hardback editions as well.

Product great, pricing deceptive. The dictionary is superior. However, the distributor, Mobisystems, seem to expect payment for the “premium” version on each iOS device on which it’s installed by the same account holder. That’s a non-starter. Until they change this deceptive practice (they mention it nowhere, and “restore purchase” functionality only works on the “original” device) and end their extortionate price levels, I’ll use it on the one device and not deal with it further. Caveat emptor. You cannot pay once and use the app on both an iPad and an iPhone. .... I have changed the rating to 4 stars, because there is still some trouble getting the app to restore purchases on additional devices. It required deleting the unresponsive download and a new download and installation. Also, to be fair, the developer did respond to my original derogatory review by email, which sat unread on an unused server for six weeks. Their instructions for restoration, clearly well-intended, were not helpful. I had to fiddle further on my own. On the basis of the app itself and the product, this deserves a 5-star rating. An app that carries the brand “Oxford” however should not be flawed in terms of fulfillment in this way, I believe. I misjudged initially. There is no deception.

Still no dark mode — unusable. Also, the app privacy report is Schrodinger’s data collection: Mobi-Systems somehow simultaneously collects and tracks you by your data and does not track you by your data? Weird. Periodically, I consider subscribing to this app for the convenience of a dictionary in an app, but the reality is that I still don’t know anything about this company. The OED very specifically does not make an app for their online service. Is Mobi-Systems licensing OED content at a fraction of the price? I don’t know—their website says nothing about it. All things considered, I prefer to pay full price directly to OED even in spite of the slight inconvenience of having to access it via browser on mobile and logging in every time.

Excellent dictionary. When you want the best in dictionaries you can always count on Oxford. This app is no exception. An excellent dictionary that has everything you’ll ever need! There is one thing that happened that has completely baffled me. I created my own “folder” under the Favorites section. I had “favorited” many words and moved them into my folder. I had to shut my iPhoneX down and do a restart. When I went to the Oxford Dictionary the folder I had created “Rick’s Favorites” had disappeared. Along with the many words I had placed in it. Why would a restart wipe out the folder I had created to hold my favorite words? I’ve tried every way I know to recover the folder but to no avail. Hopefully the developer may have an idea of how I should proceed. Hopefully?

Dictionary app. This dictionary app, the Oxford app, has helped me build my vocabulary, more so than another dictionary app that I have used. This one seems to use a broader range of information for any given word. For example, I believe this app has more contemporary, technical and slang references. This app tends to retrieve a word that I am looking for. It surprises me sometimes, but I frequently fail to find ordinary, commonly-used words in some dictionaries. This app takes longer to start and is slow pulling up the word, which is unexpected; the other dictionary app was faster by about 5 seconds. But usually I am not in a big hurry; I use this app once or twice a week.

Great data set, crappy subscription model. You just lost a subscriber.. I've been a subscriber for about two years, and have enjoyed the OED access, and made it my go-to/first choice for looking up definitions. However, the recent update locked up, forcing me to uninstall/reinstall (which deleted my list of favorites), and now, audio pronunciation doesn't work, unless I upgrade to a plan that costs twice as much, (but to be fair, gives me access to 15 other dictionaries...in languages that I don't speak. 🙄) No thanks. I'm not going to pay an extra $20 a year just to have a function that I previously had, and that you have set out of reach. The browsing is rather limited, unless you have a particular word you want to look up to start, but it is nice that you can click on just about every word in the definition and have it hop around between them. I'm glad that you pushed this update a few weeks before my yearly subscription auto renewed, because they gave me a chance to cancel it before you took more money, for less service. Also, someone needs to go through your FAQ, and update all of the questions that talk about audio pronunciation, and which versions they work in, because those questions are inaccurate. (I checked, just before posting this.)

Perfect reading companion. I love to discover words previously unfamiliar to me and the origin of those words. I’ve not yet found a better companion on this journey than the Oxford Dictionary app. It’s so much lighter to carry about than the hard copy version! I love how the app keeps track of the words I look up so I can review them, say, at the end of the day to help cement my expanded vocabulary. It’s so easy to use I’ll find myself exploring the network of related words and their origins just for fun. My only criticism of the app is I do wish the quality of some of the spoken word examples was less muddy. Some samples sound like they were recorded decades ago. They do work, though, and it doesn’t dampen my enthusiasm for using the app.

Complete. Pretty much everything I look up is in here, including compounds. The definitions are accurate, detailed, succinct, up to date, and entertaining. The apparatus to look up words works well. It has a function for “go to the previous screen I saw”; it lacks only a “go to the next screen I saw” function to be perfect. It uses the IPA pronunciation symbols, which I greatly prefer. It marks Britishisms, North American usages, usages from Australia, New Zealand, India, Africa…. They appear to update it regularly, although I haven’t investigated that, but it always seems to include the latest words and definitions. They naturally use UK pronunciation, but that doesn’t give me any problem though I’m in California, because I’m already familiar with the way I speak. :) I wouldn’t use any other dictionary.

Okay. The definitions are fine but the actual format is very distracting. Useful, but lacking in organization. It gets the job done, but not as well as it could. Also, the fact that you must have premium to hear the pronunciations is frustrating. Instead of adding a button which makes it look like you can hear the pronunciation, don’t put the button in at all, please. A tab coming up advertising “Get More With Premium” is more annoying than not having the sound button at all. If the website/app is harassing me to buy the full version I’m more likely to delete the obnoxious app than to buy their application. Developers, rather, could just place a banner on certain areas of the app which says something to the effect of, “See What Else You Can Get With Premium” or even the original “Get More With Premium” would suffice. Nevertheless, the free app *is* nice.

Outrageous price hike for an abridged digital dictionary. Back when I paid $5 for this dictionary it seemed underpriced, but after using I realized the app is a condensed version of Oxford’s 12 volume collection. There’s only short definitions with little to no etymology included. The pricing in-factseemed fair. But now they want 8X the original price and for what? A thesaurus?! Plus, it’s a yearly subscription! Outrageous. Old users should either be grandfathered in or given an option to keep the scaled back edition they originally purchased. This new plan seems criminal with zero loyalty to longstanding users. Good luck maintaining this overpriced subscription model when so many other resources exist for free. I’m moving to Webster’s. God bless America

Missing 2 key features. These two missing features are equally egregious in my mind. Firstly, this dictionary does not have definitions (in its app) that would be helpful while reading. I know not every word needed can be anticipated. But too often I look up a word while I am reading for class and there is no definition for it. If there were a “student version” with more definitions and was priced reasonably (about $5) I would immediately download it, even at the cost of space. Additionally, a “request definition” button could help solve this issue in the long run. If enough people request a definition, it could help the analytics side see that the definition is needed and promptly add it in the next update. Secondly, when I tap the search bar, I do not want the word I just looked up to be remembered. Most search bars actually have a feature where the previous search is cleared when you tap on the search bar. This is a feature that makes sense. Usually, when I am tapping on a search bar, I want to make a new search. Not here, though. This app assumes I want to look up the same word over and over again. I operate with the former assumption, so often my searches end up looking like such: “shewantipathy,” when it should just be “antipathy.” Fixing these two issues would raise my rating to a 5 for sure.

Irritating. The word of the day is the same everyday if I don’t open it and look. I finally open the word pine snake today. It had popped up every single day since Jan 24. If I don’t open a word of the day, I’m NOT interested in that word and tomorrow I’d like to see a new word option. Don’t harass me with the same word until I open it. It’s in the history of I ever want it, or it should be. I find I avoid the app and use google simply because I’m irritated by the app. I don’t seek it out. Then within the app I can only rate it five stars. It doesn’t allow me to do a real and honest rating. Too bad I paid for the upgrade. Going to go see if Collins Cobuild has done a dictionary app yet. They have much better definitions and derivations. They never use the word in its own definition. Note the Colin’s. Cobuild app is bybthe same app developer so I don’t expect it to work any better.

Love word of the day, simply wish words could be rated above 6th grade reading level. I have loved the 26 volume Oxford dictionary for decades and actually owned the complete set at one time. I have relied upon it professionally through academic portals for years and cannot express how pleased I was to find a really affordable subscription for the Oxford dictionary (although, I am finding, it means it comes without all of the incredible and expansive benefits that come with the full membership). But I must say, it is beginning to feel as if I have the ‘New Collegiate’ or ‘Desk Reference Dictionary’ with the unimaginative word selections for the Word of the Day. Affordable or no, the Word of the Day would better serve the Oxford Dictionary I know and love if it did not seem a diminution of intellectual stimulation, growth, and challenge.

Great app lacks great typography. While I enjoy the many features of the app such as: audio pronunciations, favorites, and others, I wish they would hire a proper typographer to help them set the text for screens. The definitions are not as easy to read as they are on other apps. The text is very condensed and it prevents the information from being easily digested. This matters in mobile use because we are usually in a hurry to find information and move on to the next thing. The camera lookup feature definitely has advantages for wanting to lookup multiple words, just be careful how many you scan at once.

Disappointed with the most recent update. Not a fan of all the updates changing the layout of the app. Personally, I like the original much better. However, the app still served its purpose. The reason I am giving this two stars is because with the most recent update, all of my favorited words were deleted, ALL OF THEM. This is extremely frustrating as I have invested a lot of time adding and developing that extensive list and with one update, it all gets deleted. Seems like whoever manages and administers these updates is more concerned with the superficial aesthetics of the product instead of the functionality and maintaining certain features that kept the consumers using the app. Probably going to transition to Merriam Webster’s app following this update. PLEASE STOP DELETING SAVED DATA WITH EACH UPDATE.

Better Than Most. Oxford Dictionary is better than most online/app based dictionaries for having one key feature that most available dictionaries seem to lack. And that feature is the ability to search/scroll through the entire entry list A-Z. Recently I've made it a personal goal of mine to expand my vocabulary and one way to achieve that goal was by using apps that give you a "word of the day" until I realized I could learn a lot more and reach my target faster by using an atoz dictionary ensuring I learn all there is to learn of the English language. Although the interface of Oxford's app isn't the most use friendly and it's riddled with more ads. It does offer a complete list of all of its entries which will always separate it from other dictionaries on the market in my opinion.

OED’ Word of the Day Needs Complexity. Might you consider upgrading this “word of the day” automatic feature? Granted, I acknowledge the disclaimer that the word on every given day is randomly generated. That, however, is why the user can’t adjust it, not a fact that makes it impervious to the developer modifying the software. The problem as I see it is simply, if you will, that the words are too simple. My experience with such novelties is that they highlight words not usually found in common usage, in order to expand one’s vocabulary. Your app, on the other hand, serves up a daily dose of hopelessly commonplace nouns and verbs; for example, “rodeo” and “nibble”, respectively, as two recent offerings. As such, the feature is uninformative at best and, unless one shuts down the notifications entirely, a nuisance. The distinguished OED should expand the mind and the vocabulary of the educated user, not cater to popularity in pursuing the least common denominator among the crowd. Please consider this sensible upgrade to your software. Thank you for your attention to my concern, meant constructively of course as a longtime faithful adherent to the OED.

I put 4 stars, because app asks for 5 stars. This is a good free dictionary & thesaurus and i love using when I’m watching some tasks in quiz shows involving words in Oxford Dictionary, so I decide to buy full version without ads and with iCloud sync, but after buying the full version it still asking to “rate 5 stars” as “an ad” every time when I open the app or look for definition, so I put because it is still annoying. Again, it is good dictionary app even in free mode, but I hope that you will fix that detail in next updates, and of course add new words in ODE.

Just one small complaint. First, I want to say I love the Oxford. I grew up on Merriam-Webster. I recently switched to the Oxford because I started finding many circular definitions (one word defined as another, which that other defined itself as the former word), and definitions that simply did not lead me to an ability to use the word correctly. My complaint is simply with the Oxford app. There should be a back button that takes me to the word I was originally looking at. Occasionally I find myself in a word chain, where I need to look up definitions of words within a definition. Once I tap on the word to look it up, there is no smooth way to go back to the original word I from where I started. June 2023 update: the back button was fixed a few months ago. Works great!

Love my daily word of the day.. As part of expanding my vocabulary, I admire the word of the day option. The only con I am not fond of is the varying membership prices that changes at different times. I wish you could buy the dictionary in a single purchase with the option to update for a fee as the catalogue updates but for now I may have to wait for the next membership sale to give the premium option a go. Otherwise it’s a nice tool for reference and build on your word knowledge for conversations.

If I could give this zero stars, I would. WARNING: this app is unusable without paying for premium. You can only look up ONE WORD per day, then a pop up blocks the screen. Awful. Once you look up your SINGLE word, you can’t do anything else in the app. Anything. Word of the day? BLOCKED. Recent words? BLOCKED. Special Topics? BLOCKED. If you’re not going to pay for a subscription, don’t even bother downloading this. Maybe go for Merriam-Webster, at least that works. I was hoping this would be a good quick-reference tool by a reputable company, but it’s only taking up space on my phone. The description for this app is misleading, it is shown as “free” in the App Store. They should tell you upfront in the description that you can’t do anything without a subscription. It’s conveniently left out. It lets you believe that the app is functional without a subscription.

No way to give feedback or report bugs. Update: The links are fixed but there is still no usage section for the word ‘since’. The developer also replied with directions on how to report bugs — it’s under Settings > Help > Ask Our Community > Bug reports. For an app not to have a “contact us here” link is odd. Maybe I just couldn’t find it. Otherwise excellent app. In case the developer reads this the link is broken for both the usage of ‘and’ and ‘since’ in the usage section following the definition of ‘because.’ Also there is no usage section for since.

Falls short. A quick note on the example sentences. It would be optimal if examples would be drawn from classic examples of good writing. Please watch your blatantly misogynistic language. For “mercenary”, the example sentence is “She’s nothing but a mercenary little gold-digger”. Seeing that the vast majority of professional “mercenaries” are men, it would be easy to come up with a sentence that does not viciously target women”. Perhaps we can refer to a business executive with mercenary tactics; there, it doesn’t even specify gender. I chose the Oxford English Dictionary (not American) because I wanted a definitive source for difficult English words. Interestingly, the strength of this dictionary is in colloquial American words. Although the name “Oxford” evokes the idea of old books and traditional education, if you read classic English literature by famous authors from the 18th or 19th centuries, you would be hard pressed to find definitions on this app. I found it terribly ironic that the Dictionary app or Google has more definitions than OED. I had the same problem with an American novel from the 20th century. It appears that the OED app is focused on modern newspapers and light fiction. I would pay handsomely for an app that has definitions for ALL non-technical English words; yes even the obsolete, archaic, and literary. I have no interest in reading blogs. I like to be able to read any book going as far back as Early Modern English, and find the definitions here.

The Final Word of Words. I was blessed to have been born into a family of readers. Our parents (and soon we children) always had a book or three within reach. Reference books (esp dictionaries & encyclopedias) were in abundance. When a dictionary was needed the Oxford was the one most used by us all. Why? Well, if one is an English speaker whether in England, North America, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, or India one would wisely insist on lexical entries being true to those traditionally accepted and used by the English. Such a lexicon is The Oxford Dictionary of the English Language.

Oxford gets 5stars, Mobi 2. Before providing the excellent definition, a Buy premium screen interrupts. “Buy premium” ads are one place where advertisers are rewarded for being obnoxious. I resist the upselling so as not to reward them. In addition the app sometimes—no, often—has very annoying glitches such as when the definition vanishes before I have finished reading it. Or, before I can type in the entire entry, an unrelated screen appears. Of course the content is top of the line, it’s the OED. But the implementation by Mobi isn’t worthy of the greatest English language dictionary. Hold your nose and buy it. Maybe Mobi will raise its standards to match what it is selling. ~~~~~ A couple of months later, still annoying as heck. Each time I use it I think about ditching it. The OED should have selected a competent partner. I am lowering my rating from 3 to 2. Weighting the implementation more heavily than the content, which after all, represents over a century of work by competent conscientious people.

Wear your words like well chosen clothes. Knowing the source, historical use and origin of a word makes each word not just bland black and white text, but the conveyance of colorful meaning and history. Words matter. Choose them carefully. Understand them before you use them. Look them up in the OED! Words are like the clothes you choose to wear - they are a comment on your style, your origin, your beliefs and how you relate to others. I would like to see more historical references in the digital OED but its a great start to your word choices.

In APP purchases, and subscriptions are effectively saying goodbye to me.. This dictionary used to work, no features demanded more money. I just now opened it, and probably never will again. Hey money people until you jerks pay living wages, there ain’t one of us who will be able to afford, or justify, the push to pay for any feature or function, again, and again, and again. Many of us are already pulling old systems out of the closets, the systems that could be fixed, upgraded, and that used software we only had to pay for once. Maybe again if there was a major upgrade. But I mean MAJOR. Good luck with the run, it’ll get your executives some fat bonuses, but ultimately shady business is rewarded with aversion to anything you do. I certainly don’t see this product in the same light. Once upon a time I was looking into buying a print version. Not anymore. Funny how one burn can splatter consequences through the whole interaction. Isn’t it? Your clobbering me with corporate selling points doesn’t change that I had the full version and through your magic now it’s always a subscription. I’m on a fixed income. The message EVERYONE is giving me is that I can’t afford exist. No money, no welcome. Period. So subscription away, just know you’re throwing me into effective exile. Don’t worry, you’re not even remotely the first and you’re nowhere near the last. Disabled people only exist to be abused and exploited. Why else do I have to keep breathing?

Excellent reference. I use this app easily 2-3 times per day since I read a lot of books. It always gives me great I sight into the etymology and usage of the words I do not know. Well worth the cost of subscription. I would like to recommend the creators of this app need to pay more close attention to the list of US Presidents (out of date listing Obama as the most recent) the countries and their capitals (Kazakhstan’s capital has changed names to Nur-Sultan) and does not have the most up to date name of Swaziland (Eswatini). These items are important to keep current. Current information is one of the reasons I am willing to pay. Please update.

Frustration. I have used the Oxford Dictionary of English on my Kindle and on my iPhone, and I have until now been perfectly satisfied with it – and would have given it 5 stars. But tonight I have tried at least 6 times to look up a word, and the dictionary has not allowed me to do so. Every time I enter the word, an ad pops up — several times asking me to subscribe to the New York Times, to which I already subscribe, and then asking me to subscribe to a premium version of the dictionary itself. How I can award more than 1 star to a dictionary which refuses to define a word for me?

Not highly recommended. I downloaded 2 dictionaries ( OXFORD&WEBSTER) at one time and compared a bit. 1. START: It takes slightly over 6 seconds to open the OXFORD dictionary, and slightly less than 3 seconds to open the WEBSTER dictionary. (3 seconds makes a huge difference when you eagerly wanna understand a new word you encounter. For this, I minus 3 ⭐️ .) 2. SEARCH:Tapping the search bar to look for the vocabulary, OXFORD freezes another second or longer. I thought something went wrong with my iPhone. The problem doesn’t exist in WEBSTER though. 3. PRICE:Premium of OXFORD:$9.99; premium of WEBSTER:$4.99. ($1.99 to remove the ads). I paid $9.99 for the OXFORD dictionary and $1.99 for WEBSTER, respectively, because I find ads annoying. 4. INTERPRETATION: I find OXFORD interpretation is easier to understand. 5. INTERFACE:WEBSTER has better and simpler interface designs. 2 things I like the most about WEBSTER’s interface: 1) letters are bigger. 2)the like button ♥️ is shown right below the word you look for. (in OXFORD, you have to click extra through a “...” button to reach the like ⭐️ button. In conclusion, I think I wasted $ 9.99 on OXFORD premium dictionary.

The OED HAS DISAPPOINTED. After giving up on the American Heritage Dictionary (said dictionary being “updated” and requiring the app be repurchased on at least two occasions) I turned to Oxford Dictionary of English. I was minimally satisfied—until the beta version was released. Reluctantly I agreed to beta-test the OED. Upon doing so, my experience with the app plummeted when the full page ad appeared before the dictionary home page. Then there was an annoying NY Times ad at the bottom of the page. Pronunciation evanesced unless I “upgraded” to premium. Even looking up a simple word became impossible without upgrading. Apparently the app’s braintrust was given marching orders to monetize app usage to daily users such as myself. This is comprehensively frustrating and I am currently looking for a dictionary app that has nothing to do with this app developer. I need a dictionary available for offline usage, such as on a plane. Chopfallen with the OED & AHD.

Amazing dictionary😄. This is an amazing app to learn new words, I really like Oxford dictionaries. This app had been like a helping hand when I was at reading difficult words that is difficult for me to understand. The recent history section made me to recall words even though if I couldn’t keep that word in my brain. The finally the most fantastic part of this dictionary is that it is offline and in this way I can search up words if my WiFi is not working properly or in a place where there is no WiFi.

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️. Unfortunately the Tap a Star to Rate feature does not appear to be operational on iOS at the time of this review. There is the Oxford Dictionary and then there are a number of publications that no matter what the call themselves are nothing more than collections of words. In this format however if one chooses, or cannot afford to subscribe the advertising content I find distracts from the pleasure of using the app. However the cost of producing the content and hosting it has to be paid somehow and so one can understand the need for advertising in the free edition.

My favorite dictionary. Having a dictionary on my phone is invaluable for checking spelling and correct meaning of commonly used words. I enjoy seeing the Word of the Day, though I do wish that they would mix in some more obscure words to increase my vocabulary.

App not loading updates.. I have been using this app for quite some time and getting the updates as they come through however, now the app keeps on saying ‘waiting’ constantly. When the app show that it’s finished then I tap it all it goes through the whole process of saying loading, waiting. This has been going on for over two weeks. What is the matter with the system. It won’t automatically upload, even connecting to my computer, gives no result. I even take it to the shopping Centre .... nothing. Help please! I use my dictionary regularly.

Oxford is trustworthy (a bit). The app’s good. I like the word of the day Concept. The only problem is that it has too many advertisements. It also notifies me as the word today is .... and then when I go in to the app it shows a different word usually the same word as yesterday. It is really very annoying. It should be fixed immediately. Also new words appear on ‘word of the day’ differently each day. One day it says 25th word is ‘an’ and the next day it says the word for 25th is tri-band. This MUST be fixed IMMEDIATELY. I really want to give 5 stars but I’ve got to be honest. Oxford should consider this NOW. Not 5 years later, but NOWWW!! Also premium is too costly. Please reduce it!

😘. I love you guys I think your amazing and your make my day every single day even on the worst ones you pick me up in the morning and carry me through to the next day 🥰 I have a few concerns that with the new in app purchase and only 1 word a day you are disadvantaging poor people from having access to an education. Which is all literature and words made and I think if this is really the path you wish to persue? Then perhaps a 3 word limit because it automatically opens in old search and the fore stops you from accessing you word for the fat. Perhaps it would be better to release a short online free version. Like a primary school aged smaller dictionary funded solely by advertising and then 2 options like written only yearly subscription and a premium memberships with the audio and words sound outs...??? Just an idea I still want to support your app I think it’s just really really important that everyone has free access to a dictionary and therefore a good education and vocabulary and some people might still be struggling just with a telephone purchase in the fist place mate!...😇...🥰...😎😎...?...🤓!!!’

Poor value. I’ve been very disappointed. Firstly the standard version comes with a torrent of unwanted advertisements whenever I look up a word. Secondly there’s a limit of four words per day. It seems this can be avoided by purchasing the premium version but this adds quite a lot to the annual fee and I think that’s poor value. The dictionary itself works quite well but at times I’ve been disappointed by a less explanation of the origin and the evolution of a word’s meaning and usage.

Disappointing. I bought this app thinking that it would have in-depth information about words in the English language similar to at least the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary which I possess. Instead the derivations and information are brief and not much more informative that a $5 dictionary bought at an airport book store. It is true that the app is backed by the authority of the OED but I am overall disappointed by the meagreness of the information supplied. Bad show, chaps!

Inconsistency. I checked the word of interest on web system via University library system to be sure that I was going to pay for the service consistently across different platforms. I am particularly interested in Dictionary of Biology. The web version access via University is free of charge, but I was looking for more portable options. It turned out if you access the web of Oxford dictionary via University Library, you would get more complete explanations on the word of meaning. The subscription cost here only provides the very basic explanations of word. You can buy the latest kindle edition for more complete entry for a particular discipline (so much cheaper for the annual subscription) and I doubt the word of meaning changes every year. It can last for 5 to 10 years.

Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware. I have the paid version. Do NOT purchase this app. How did Oxford get it so wrong. The app constantly interrupts the user with nagging adverts for Oxford products in the guise of word of the day, which pops up about every 5 seconds, blatting what the user was doing or looking at results. Grrrrr. Again I switched off word of the day in settings but I have been constantly interrupted by word of the day while using this app. This is Definitely the worst app you can buy. Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag- Nag-ware ware Nag-ware Nag-ware Nag-ware for some reason you are unable to give this app zero stars which I would prefer to giving it 1 star which I am forced to do because it won’t allow zero. I would actually give -5 stars if this were possible.

Shocking memory. I want to give this app 5 stars, I really do, because I respect Oxford as an institution. But the main feature I use on this app, the favourites feature, does not work sufficiently. It barely works at all, in fact. If you scroll down further than perhaps 20 words in your favourite section, and click on any given word, a completely random word will pop up. Without fail the word you click on will just not pop up, you have to go back to the search bar and type it in if you want the definition for that word. Not only that, but it forgets words that you’ve already favourited, and so duplicates appear in droves. I can’t be expected to remember every obscure or interesting word I add to favourites, so I expect an app to do so. But no, it doesn’t, it forgets all the time. This app is definitely not worth the money I paid. Fix it, please! I don’t want to have to rely on other dictionary apps, because I find that Oxford’s definitions are best.

Good dictionary.. This is a good dictionary but then again it is Oxford so it should be. The question is just how useable is it. I would like to see a short tutorial of features. I find myself always looking to see if I have missed something outstanding. (Not found anything yet). I would also like it to be able to replace Apple's native dictionary and correct or replace words on the fly instead of leaving the editing app, opening the dictionary, and then then typing the troublesome word into the search box. I wish there was a shorter way to do this.

A Great Dictionary, but .... This dictionary is great, except for ONE (1) very annoying fact, and that is every time I look up the meaning of a word, which is often, you confront me with questions of what you might want me to answer, or to change to, when all I want is to find out the meaning of a word. I am seriously thinking of switching to another dictionary to avoid this shocking timewaster. I urge you, please, to STOP this dreadful idea of yours. Christina .

Laggy and glitchy on iPhone 13 Pro. It’s glitchy, laggy when scrolling, part of the screen up the top flashes white when scrolling. Maybe just needs to be updated for iPhone 13? I would be happy to subscribe/pay, as I understand there is a cost you need to cover..but if you’re going to start make people pay, it means you need to up your game and offer an app that is smooth and works well. Once the app works well I’ll change over and subscribe. But for now will use a different app.

Grate Dictionary. I knew that would raise your eyebrows, well one at least! Apart from the ads on the free version, the word search is quick and I do like the fact that words, including variations of the word, are displayed during the input phase of each search. I’m a fan and will be upgrading to the paid version. NOTE: I also use Macquarie Dictionary, this in my opinion is far better.

Several UI bugs. 1. It keeps activating the system English keyboard. I use third-party keyboard (Gboard) so this makes it very annoying to me. 2. When the side nav panel is opened, I can still tap on some buttons in the main view, e.g. the offline mode toggle, which should be behind the overlay. 3. It would be better to have a favourite button straight in the word view, instead of hiding it in the three dots menu. 4. I really don't think left-to-right swipe should always open the side nav. It should do so only in main view, but being users back to main view in word view. Additionally in word view it'd be nice if top-to-bottom swipe can open the search view. Currently the 2 buttons in the top-level right corner are genuinely hard to reach.

A Really Helpful Companion. This dictionary is a very good resource for me as I am able check spelling especially and meaning very quickly. I use it invariably to correct my mis-spelling. Use it quite often as my spelling is not as efficient as it used be in my younger days when I was writing more often. Helps me with my pronunciation of the words. Thanks for being available when I need it at a moment’s notice.

Consistent issues. As a dictionary it does its job, however the 2 star rating is provided based on the favourites function not working properly at all (one of the main incentives to get the full version of the app over just looking up the definition in google): I was told to re-favourite all of my words after a previous update corrupted the links between the word and the definition. I then spent a good couple of hours doing that. This latest update has now deleted all of my favourited words rendering the entire exercise useless and a waste of my time. MobiSystems, the app developer, has not provided any helpful support whatsoever.

Favourites deleted when updates???. All my favourites that I’d been saving for quite a while and spending time organising neatly into folders got deleted when I updated the app. Should I start saving my favourites all over again? Or are they going to be deleted next time there’s update available? I’m really sorry to say this, but that’s right down stupid. And... so many bugs! This review was written quite some time ago but still no response, so I thought I’d add something to it. And again, a new update is available and I’m not sure if downloading it will delete my favourites again. Given the lack of response, I think I can safely assume that the answer is YES, my favourites will be gone if I update it. Very disappointing from an app that costs 30 dollars (Australian). And another update and favourites gone, no response from the app designers (4th November 2018) Yet another update, favourites gone, no response from developers (13th November 2018)

Keeps asking for payment even though I have subscription. I’ve just loaded this onto my new iPad. I have a full subscription valid through to mid 2022. However, the app keeps insisting I need to upgrade to Premium even though I already have it. They’ve been too many glitches over the years with Oxford. Surely they could afford programmers who can make the thing work. Just followed their useless instructions for getting the Premium subscription to work. They don’t work. If I try to upgrade within the app, it actually recognises that I already have a Premium subscription but doesn’t activate it. These problems seem to start happening years ago when Oxford went to Mobisystems. Time to fix this! 6/1/22 Contacted Mobisystems. They were looking into the issue some weeks ago. Still doesn’t work. Haven’t heard back from Mobisystems. I deleted from iPad Pro to reinstall and it reminded me I have a subscription. But, despite that, it still doesn’t work on this iPad. Why did Oxford ever go with Mobisystems? Dreadful app.

Maryam. I mistakenly click on I don’t want to pay for this app it was just mistakenly and I immediately deleted this app because I don’t have this much money to pay for this and I don’t want to buy please tell me what can I do now I need my money back because it’s was only mistakenly

Good, but you are stuck with their ‘Word of the day’…. The OED is the authority on the English language - though the lands haunted by the ghost of Merrim Webster do not recognise that authority - and this is a very good app. What I don’t understand is why, when all I want to do is look up a word, I have to put up with a randomly generated ‘Word of the day’. Fine for people want it, but I find it only marginally less annoying that *not being able to turn the wretched thing off*… Good of the developer to respond. Unfortunately the response is irrelevant. The annoying ’word of the day’ you can’t turn off is *inside* the app.

Could be better. Predictive text is not good, words of the day are too simple and App interface requires some tweaks to help with ease of use. I paid for the full product to remove adds, and would love to see effort put into future releases and updates. I like the “Word of the day” feature but I think with so many cryptic words in the English Language some Little less known words, and ones with multiple syllables could be used in this good feature.

User friendly. This version of Oxford Dictionary is extremely user friendly absolutely I love the special topics along with other features it’s a joy to have and use I would be lost without it I use it most everyday for one thing or another, I especially love the pronunciation feature, a short while ago after a software update I could no longer use the dictionary at all,to say I was devastated is an understatement.

No synonyms is a huge loss comparing to the website. As the title said, there’s no synonyms in the translation, comparing to the website, I’d rather save my money and use the website, plus there’s more examples of the words on the website. Why I should spend this much money on it. I feel regret buying this app. As a chargeable app should has advantages that’s why I don’t think it’s deserved for me to spend so much money on this one. But I hope it’ll think about this and make a progress on it.

Absolute Reliable English Dictionary Convenience. The Convenience of having such an easy to use and reliable dictionary right on hand in my pocket, everywhere I go, at all times, is priceless. Although one would naturally assume there would be a Thesaurus option included within this app, but there is not! Why?

I am no longer lost for words. It’s the OED and it works, is that not sufficient recommendation? I find it particularly useful for etymology and differences between American and British usage. It’s not as useful for English usage elsewhere where there are large numbers of first language speakers, such as West Africa, South Africa, India New Zealand and Australia. Australia has the Macquarie. For others it is a gaping hole.

Lousy developer expects double payment after iPad crash. One buys the premium version which is expensive. Old iPad dies, I download from my iCloud account every other paid for application successfully. All work perfectly except for the Oxford dictionary which gives limited functionality and wants me to pay for the Premium version again! Whilst the premium version was very good the stingy MobiSystems people in my opinion are unethical in not allowing a paid customer to re-download from his iCloud account. I will continue to use my full version of the Macquarie dictionary it downloaded to my replacement iPad perfectly with full functionality. The complete Macquarie dictionary is equally as good a reference as the Oxford Dictionary it is actually better for modern and technical English and unlike oxford they don’t expect one to pay for the download twice. Also the word of the day from oxford is often absolutely stupid. It’s randomly computer selected word or phrase would not improve the vocabulary of any thinking person. eg China Sea is a geographical location.

Good but not yet perfect. The ODE is highly useful and I value especially the cross referencing between related words, the inclusion of derivative data and the phonetic pronunciation backed up by an audio link to the word sounded. My only quibble is that in my early use the app switches between the word search function and services like word of the day. A high rating qualified only by a sense that the closer the interface is to straight search and find, the easier it is to use and that is not yet optimal for me. I am not sure also whether the fee I paid to upgrade the application resulted in the upgrade being automatically installed. Perhaps the details of operation on the Apple Store site could be enlarged upon or some additional messaging be added after the election to pay for the upgrade.

My Gratitude. Always useful, sometimes thrilling (the special dictionaries, like the Beaufort Scale), and marvellous to have the pronunciation of unfamiliar words. I couldn’t live without it, and maybe five times a day I pick up my phone to check something or other, it could just be an accurate definition of a word I want to use. My heartfelt thanks to everyone of you who work to bring me this marvel.

Awesome app. I bought this app because i wanted to be able to search words that i can across while reading. I find it very useful I originally started with the free version but i realised that i would keep using it. I got offered 50% off so i purchased it. Its great to use. No ads and being able to get voice pronunciation is awesome. Highly recommend buying if you read regularly. 👌👌

What are you up to?. I bought the dictionary and thesaurus years ago. It has been good. Now when I try to use it, it tells me I have to download a new version. It takes me to a site where I have to pay full price again. Then from inside the app it takes me to load Oxford Dictionary show as if it’s a new version of the same dictionary. When I do download it, it forces me into a subscription service @ $8 a month! And it has a whole lot of other dictionaries that I don’t want. If I have to subscribe to this package it would be prohibited by the Trade Practices Act. It sounds like they’re reneging on their sale to me as a marketing ploy. I’m amazed Oxford University is allowing it’s name to be associated with sharp practices and possibly illegal forcing. And they’ve added advertisements. Give me back what I bought you thieves.

Must have application. Language is complex. The Oxford Dictionary is a critical tool for use on a daily basis. If you come across an unfamiliar word, check meanings and uses. Not sure how to pronounce a word, the pronunciation tool is brilliant. Checking spelling, a must have tool. This is the best English dictionary for UK, Australia, New Zealand or any location that does not use American English. Suitable for students, academics, teachers, writers of any form (creative, academic, professional, etc.).

Good but bugs.. I found this app very valuable especially since you can place words in a favourites section to recall later. Using words frequently is the best way to learn. That said , there is a bug in the latest update. Words selected for my favourites , once tapped upon no longer appear with their definition. Instead a different word with its definition appears. Please fix.

Search function does not work well. I like the app but have an issue with its search function. Type the word “tasty” into search and it will give a long list of words starting with “taciturn”. You need to scroll down to find the searched word “tasty “ which is at 21 on this long list . If I search for tasty it should come at the top, don’t you think ?

Oxford Dictionary. The app Oxford Dictionary holds almost all the English words to know, updating every single time there’s a new word or meaning. It has a simple format that is easy to understand like where the search icon is, or where all your previous searches are. Even kids can use this to have a wider range of vocabulary since the definitions are easy to understand. I personally gave this a five star rating for all of the explanations above, trust me, no rip off comes when purchasing this app; that’s why when clicking on it it says ‘Most trusted dictionaries’.

Untidy & loses information. Not an attractive app to use. Very cluttered. The more irritating issue is previously searched words (the ones you don't know & wish to learn) are all lost when the app is upgraded. I have always considered Oxford a superior reference for English. However, my confidence was recently eroded when looking up the roots of the word "methanotroph". This word is absent, though legitimate (eg it's listed in Wikipedia). The Oxford reputation and legacy would suggest something better than the current offering.

Average. Not worth the money. The sound pronunciation tool does not work, (on mine anyway). It's a concise dictionary, so definitions are exactly that, which at times is disappointing. The Oxford dictionary option is available as one of the "built in" dictionaries in an iPad when selecting a word and choosing define. So this offers nothing more other than the search function. Don't waste your money.

Craig Stevens. I love the Oxfords Dictionary’s and always have been my preference. I love the word of the day, especially when I know the meaning of the word in question. Being mobile has just made Oxfords Dictionary better. You can’t beat having good word power. It’s easy to explain something in a word. Depending on who you may be speaking with.I just like having a reasonable grasp on the English Language. Thank You Oxfords 👍👌🏽👍🏻👌👍🏾👍🏻 Craig

Does what it says on the tin. Works well, thesaurus feature is also quite handy. However the lack of a dark mode in 2023 is very poor form, the vast majority of the screen real estate in this app is a garish white. Dark mode is a basic accessibility feature that should be added as soon as possible.

Great but still a bug. Great app and I use it on a daily basis for work. However, my only issue is that it flicks from the viewed word back to the search/home screen automatically...a bit frustrating as, once reverted back, you have to tap on your searched word a few times before it decides to actually stay on your word long enough to read it. But I can deal with it....for now.

This is a trustworthy resource. There are lots of tools on the web, but for writing in English this is accurate, reliable and easy to use. I use English and Australian English words and get quite confused by some American English phrases and some commentary on my blogs about syntax, spelling and word use. This dictionary helps to sort those differences out, especially when the audience is well educated people who are not from the America’s. I find Americans make comments about my spelling issues because they don’t recognise that we don’t use the same language.

Feedback on Oxford Dictionary App. This Oxford Dictionary app has played a significant role in my English learning process. There are a number of benefits gained from utilizing the app. One brief example is that you can develop your natural English thinking capability when using an online monolingual dictionary like this one. The app also allows me to learn a wide range of vocabularies, especially those belonging to the academic world list. Thank you Oxford for offering one of the most trustworthiest and wonderful e-learning apps. I hope the whole team and Oxford users all the best with their nonstop learning progress! 😊

Really great English dictionary. I love using the Oxford English dictionary app. It’s so convenient to have on my phone. I use it almost every day. It’s really useful. I liked it so much I bought the paid version which is a lot better with no adds and hardly ever freezes. I like that there is detailed definitions including word origins which was a feature of the Oxford book dictionaries that I was always interested in. The paid version also has a pronunciation feature which is incredibly useful, especially if like me you aren’t good at reading the phonetic pronunciation. Sometimes the app doesn’t work well if there is poor wifi internet connection but I think that’s my phone and not the app. It usually works fine on cellular data (iPhone). I really recommend this app. You know you can trust it because it’s Oxford. I wouldn’t use anything else.

Great content, good interface. In the full-price, ad-free version, the content of the dictionary is very good. The performance is very fast. The extra-cost offline content makes it instantaneous and it's still a pretty small storage requirement (I've got 30-odd bigger apps). But when there's only one match for what I'm searching for, why extra taps to go to its definition?

Top's. This is an excellent App that is very practical & assists in so many ways to keep you on the straight & narrow when it comes writing & making sure you are using the proper words in any document. You won't be disappointed with this App! I am always referring to this App with regards to making sure that I have spelt my word correctly & that the word I’m using is the proper word to use. No excuses if you’re spelling or using the wrong words if you have this App. Top App

Great dictionary easy to use. Use this dictionary almost daily, since downloading it I've not used the other apps. So time to delete them!! Only criticism would be the price if you choose to take up the Professional version at $30 it's expensive. Saying that I use the free version it serves me well.

Sherree. It’s so easy to look up words on your phone instead of trying to find a dictionary when you know you’re out, or to even look up words that you’re unfamiliar with that you say you will do later but never do, but since it’s so handy on your phone you look it up straight away and that enhances your future. 😁

Good, but you need to turn Offline mode on. I was having problems with the app until I realised that you have to go into settings to activate (download) the Offline mode. Then it works fine. Otherwise, only works when you are online.

Repeats. Overall, this dictionary app is very good, however, ..... Quite often, the same word(s) appears two days in a row. On the home screen of my phone, there will be a message saying, “Today’s word is .......”, whatever it is, but when I open the dictionary app, I find that the word that got displayed on my home screen and which should also appear in the dictionary, instead the same word from the previous day is there. It’s a bug, which should be fixed/removed and it’s the only thing I don’t like about this app.

Handy responsive resources. Easy to use responsive app

Trash. That the Oxford brand would sully its good name with an app like this is beyond comprehension.

Great layout and clear definition with examples.. Can’t recommend a different dictionary.

Expensive!. This is a good app, but so overpriced!

Fast and accurate. Great reference app! Highly recommend

Oxford Dictionary. Used to be worth having; now just wants user to buy Premium version. Lots of ads.

Exorbitant ads. I know that is a way to create income... But calm, please

Do not buy. This application, after years of use, started asking me to upgrade for a “best value” of $51. The message keeps popping up when I try to use the pronunciation feature, for which I paid when I bought this version. This give you an idea about the developers’ ethics…

My go-to app for definitions. It’s expanding my vocabulary and knowledge. Thank you!

Oxford Dictionary of English. I can’t download the dictionary and I paid for it. Please help

Paper. I use the paper shorter Oxford, most the time

Inadequate. ‘Not found’ is the response to my last two dozen searches. Easier to Google an unknown word. Sorry I paid for this pointless app.

Oxford Dictionary. I find this app to be a wonderful resource and reference. I use it on a regular basis and I rely on it to help me understand words that I read or hear that I wish to confirm or clarify their meaning. It is reliable and easy to use.

Indispensable. Back in the day the big volumes did limit access. The best thing about my phone is having this app on it.

Too many ads in free version. I’m deleting the app.. Too many ads.

Nice application. Best dictionary till date. Highly recommended.

Free Version is useless. The Free Version is useless….several ads in a row, and you are allowed to see only the word of the day, but you can not even hear how it is pronounced correctly…

Oxford Dictionaries. The best dictionaries in the world in one app.

technically functional but not a good Mac app. The makers of this app clearly have no idea how a Mac app is supposed to work. This reminds me of shabby Windows software: functional but ugly and weird and janky.

Perfect. I am very satisfied with the app.

Awesome!. Awesome!

Awesome. Easy to use

Dictionary. Love it ,use it all the time for scrabble

Sorry I lost access although still getting word of the day?. Disappointing. Suddenly lost access although a paid premium member

There are no other English dictionaries. The OED is THE standard when it comes to the English language with correct spelling. This app is fantastic and I use it almost every day. No other dictionary comes close for accuracy, especially for formal writing. Having the correct pronunciation is a bonus. Webster’s etc are for the American language, a derivative of English. Stick to the OED.

Paid for premium, still getting ads. I pay for premium. Why am I getting ads?

Distracting. This app needs to focus your attention on the words more

OED. Best dictionary around.

I love this app. I really love the daily word meaning sent to me every morning….

Oxford Dictionary. I canceled my subscription but, was billed anyway. Something seems wrong here.

Pop up messages. Pop up messages be minimal when checking on words

Generally useful. I purchased the app as someone who works with words and wanted access to a reputable source. However, I still prefer the OED that lists extensive etymologies. This app is useful when I quickly need to define a word but the auto-fill function isn’t great and if you don’t know how to spell something that isn’t phonetically obvious you’ll have to search it up on google anyways. It often times recommends nouns and verbs as opposed to adjectives which means you’ll likely need to go through a few links to get to the definition you’re actually looking for (unless, of course, you are looking for a noun or verb form).

Too many ads. Not enough dictionary

OED. The ONLY dictionary. Love it!

Oxford Dictionary. Words are important in the English Language and this is one of the best

Worst app. I upgraded this app from the free version and it’s not working, even the sound is not coming. Customer support is worst and i didn't get any response from theme when i sent mail regarding this.

Bruh. Why would I buy a sub to view synonyms when I can /literally/ use google and just find them there. Money grubbers.

Swipe fixed. This has now been fixed. 5 stars In the older version, if you were looking up a word, and there was a word in the definition of that word, you could click on that second word to find the meaning and then swipe back to the original word you were looking at when you were done with the second word. Now that swipe option is gone, which makes it a lot more of a hassle when you have to look at multiple words. Aside from this I would rate it 5 stars. Also, would be great to be able to turn off word of the day.

Oxford. Great reference app

Dictionary. If you don’t pay, you’re only allowed one word per day. Don’t waste your time

Define arthropathy.... Not with this app... and MANY other words that don’t seem to register over the years of attempts. Others not only do it better but give “did you mean?” prompts in the case of misspelling which can be a secondary reason for many searchs

Difficult to use. Keeps pushing to opt for paid version. Free version is difficult to use.

Useful tool. Useful for any occasional time of whatever!!

Great Tool. Absolutely amazing, so convenient- & easy to access. Love it!

Accuracy. Clear, concise, accurate definitions. British English as opposed to simplified American English.

Perfect and practical. Happy to have this useful and efficient app

Disappointing. Fewer definitions for many words than Merriam-Webster online. Maybe the online Oxford is better. Glad I got three day free trial.

First time user. Keeps pushing me to upgrade too often

Obnoxious. Unruly design vomited ontop with ads. The price of the service is ridiculous and the obnoxiousness of the design gives me no confidence in paying. Look at Webster’s to see how it should done. I pay for their service even though I prefer Oxford their app makes me want to support them. I own physical copies of Oxford dictionaries and have been a fan for a long time. This app is an embarrassment to the name.

Ethan. Hi my name is Mary I am from Canada I love your app I am 6 years old

👉 Are you looking for an Adsense alternative advertising platform?

Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!

Great app. It’s a great app any word that your curious about or need to look up most luckily will be on this dictionary app also what’s great about this app is that you don’t have to scroll through a dictionary to look stuff up you can just use this app to quickly search up the word and better yet even save the word to your library to look up later

Ok, not sure what version of the OED it actually is. I often find that words listed in OED are not included in this dictionary. I understood it to be essentially all the words, just without all the etymological discussion and histories, and perhaps just the most common definitions. But it absolutely does not have words it should have. This confuses me, since I assumed it would be a direct dump from an OED database. So an immediate example that’s prompting this review, and there have been many others, is “overmorrow.” It’s not in this dictionary, but googling takes me to the free OED where the word is readily accessed.

Exceptional clarity. Oxford is the most reliable source for the correct definition of a word with intricate yet concise explanations of a words meaning that enables you to understand how to use the word in the appropriate context in order to improve the magnitude and range of your vocabulary. I think the only flaw on the app is The-Word-of-the-Day feature, which could offer better selections for the word. I am familiar with the definition and appropriate use of the words that the app picks for the word-of-the-day and I’d like it to choose words I do not know.

Premium Membership is all the Developer wants. Seriously the developer just wants you to buy the premium membership.😒 Can’t it just be a normal dictionary?? I still like it because the vast amount of words you can search up and the good definitions, but you can only listen to the pronunciation 5 times in total then you have to buy the membership to have unlimited times to listen to the word. That is not very helpful. But I’m still gonna give this 3 stars for the good definition it gives for a word.🙃

I would like to see more historical references in the digital OED but its a great start to your word choices.

... Hello Sir , I have an academic study on analyzing and Studying each word that exists in oxford dictionary . I tend to use online dictionaries to make the study easier . But i have one problem , the manager tells me to study the newest version of the dictionary , when i install the Oxford English Dictionary I couldn’t recognize the Year or the version of the dictionary . please help me and tell me the edition of this dictionary . i am waiting for your answer 🥺

Best dictionary in the world. Everyone knows the prestige the OED carries. It’s the last word in Scrabble to cases of the Supreme Court. The app is easy to use. Trouble is for full benefits one needs to plonk $20 to get the app, then they want you to plonk down another $40 year or $129 for a lifetime. Not sure if that’s without more ads than is decent—like click bait that you choose to pay for, but then it becomes ad free and you know you’re paying the livings of harmless drudges in Oxford so they can maintain the OED for logophiles and lawyers in perpetuity.

Font size is too small, etc.. Font size is too small. Why not go the extra mile and make it easier to read? Also, an alert keeps popping up (the number one in the red circle) and there is no message nor anything is flagged. Every day, you offer a new word. But it’s almost always the name of an object that is, in my opinion, fairly well known. How about offering words that would enrich a reader’s capacity to express his thoughts and feelings?

Required membership to use. Not free.. The awfully made and outdated app lets you search literally 3 words before it halts your access and demands a $20/mo membership to continue looking up more words. I tried bypassing this any way I could, since one of the "features" were to be ad-free and I thought if I exited the pop up I would continue on an ad version. I was wrong. It simply doesn't let you continue to use the app at all and you must have it to literally use a dictionary which is free everywhere. Horrible excuse to start charging suckers who actually think they're getting any deal out of these thieves.

Needs more word origins on the definition pages or a link to the word origin. Often I can’t even look up the word of the day’s origins. Thus the app is not nearly as useful to me as it could be. I like to look up word origins. Other dictionary apps are better on word origins and efficiency of reaching a word’s origins page. This app used to be much better. While the hard copies of the multi-volume Oxford English Dictionary are the best English dictionary in the world, the app doesn’t meet the same standard.

A gem for a wordsmith. Each day from the youngest years of my life, I have had, and will always have, a profound experience with words. Nothing as important than the precise word, by which, we express ourselves with complete accuracy and knowledgeable outcomes, by the words that we choose. This is one of the best online apps, and I don’t have to hold a large, heavy text in my hands. A more than five star rating!

No ads? Not true.. I like this dictionary so far but I paid for it to get rid of ads. But on the paid version HALF the home screen is used for the company’s own promotion! It also tries to force five star ratings with a pop-up. I find these things to be annoying and inappropriate on an app of this type. Inelegant. It also seems a bit dishonest to promote ‘no ads if you pay’ and yet to keep their own marketing prominent.

Warning: Paid for app suddenly has ads. I paid for an ad-free version of the Oxford English Dictionary app and have used it without issues for a long time. Suddenly, I’m getting ads. If this is an effort to get me to use the new subscription version, it’s an utter failure. I pay for full versions because I don’t like subscriptions or ads. The thing I don’t like most of all is app developers/companies deciding that they’ll change things up for me because I surely wouldn’t mind just one ad or a small subscription fee. I mind. And yes, I did check the developer website to see if this is something I could easily report. And no, there is no easy way to report or contact.

Mobi Systems Failure. The overall product does its job satisfactorily. However, when opening the app you get a pop up that keeps reoccurring saying give us a five star rating. You cannot lower the rating from five stars, which is completely obnoxious. When I wrote to complain I received a rather sarcastic response that they would look at my request and see if making a change was viable. Viable? To stop manipulating reviews isn’t a matter of doing the right thing for Mobi Systems, it’s a matter of “viability”. The one star rating is for the company’s lack of ethics, and to bring a little balance for all of the forged 5 stars.

A rating because the app bugs for a rating. A coerced review is always less favorable than a voluntary review. The only thing I don’t like about this app is that every time I open it, it flashes a screen asking for a review. It’s a stupid and annoying practice of the insecurity and lack of professionalism of the otherwise most excellent app. I bought the full version without ads. I think the content is accurate and helpful. I use it as a dictionary, and not much for the word games it offers, which are also fun and helpful. But bugging people for a review is annoying and unprofessional. Stop it Oxford!

I bought this app many years ago..... The app now spams a LOGIN message and then a YOU HAVE TO LOGIN IN AT SOME POINT message. Despite the fact that I should never have to login to use something I paid for, I have tried logging into iTunes. It changes nothing. There was an update available months ago, but when I attempted to update it around the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas), I would get a message saying the update was no longer available. The login message appears repeatedly the instant I open the app. It’s literally nearly impossible to use and actually stressful. Look. I purchased this app long long ago for for life. It’s complete utter awfulness to experience this kind of greedy deception in a freaking dictionary from OXFORD.

Non-Existent Support. The free app is decent, but I decided to splurge and upgrade to the premium version during a one-day sale. What a waste of my hard-earned money! The features that I was supposed to get with the premium upgrade don’t work. I contacted support through the app and got an auto-email advising it would take 24 hours for a specific response. That was over a week ago, and still nothing. All I really wanted was the ability to hear word pronunciations (something other apps include free), but this doesn’t work for me. The only real difference in the “premium” app is the ability to choose a Theme Color. Well, whoopty-do - that’s not worth paying for an upgrade to get.

A great help but not “THE” Oxford English Dictionary.. As a dyslexic, spelling correctly is difficult, even with the auto correct in email, text messages, and word programs. Pronouncing a word that I have never seen is also a challenge. I wouldn’t be able to respond with the words I wish without help with spelling. Being able to say the word out loud to get the spelling helps me express myself. Being able to find a new word pronounced correctly helps too. If I must handwrite, I rely on the app to make sure (as best I can) that I don’t make mistakes and look careless and ignorant.

Shows Ads Even on the Paid Version. The quality of this app has gone sharply downhill. Instead of adding useful new features, they’re adding more ads. A few months ago I wrote a negative review of the app saying that it was showing ads even though I have a paid subscription to the app. I even got a response about it. I cancelled my subscription, because why would I pay an annual fee if I have to see ads? Anyway, a few months later and the app still often shows ads upon opening. The development and product teams are beyond incompetent.

Oxford 4 life!!. For writers, poets, novelists, students, parents, ceos, anybody. I like writing with a pen on paper. And I love books!! But when I’m on the go, or in the middle of a stanza, I’m really fortunate to have a reliable dictionary app. Type the word, press the search button, and there’s your entry. Perfect for writers with add brain. You don’t have to sit and thumb through pages and see other words that get you off topic from your current thought. Kudos!!

I’ll trust it. It seems like woke political correctness is creeping into everything, even dictionaries. I won’t name names but look up racism in some other dictionaries. Instead of finding a definition of the word, you will also see political commentary from one viewpoint that was never a part of the original meaning. Let me just say that the meaning of racism is not simply a black versus white issue. I have yet to come across political activism in this dictionary.

Can’t write w/o it. My spelling skills have deteriorated ever since I became a member of the email generation . I was a champion speller in my younger days and now that the words magically appear, I just don’t trust myself when I want to use a word that isn’t commonly used. Thank you for being so available to those of us who think we have to have immediate correspondence. Of course, the problems with the USPS doesn’t help, either!!

Great Dictionary. I would give this a 5 star rating if it weren’t for the excessive ads. The dictionaries themselves are very easy to use and switch between…once you find a way to navigate your way past the adverts. I will continue to use it - and after exploring a bit more and becoming more familiar with its features and capabilities I may very well purchase the paid version. Thank you for a very solid product.

Best paid dictionary app. This dictionary app as far more words and newer words than any of the other dictionary apps. It also has more scientific terms and philosophical terms as well. Many of the other dictionary apps out there that I have paid for are seriously lacking and would not be adequate for a university student or a professional scientist. If you are going to pay for a dictionary app look no further and don’t waist your money buy buying multiple apps.

Worth the money. BEST dictionary app out there. As an English literature major, this is the only dictionary we are allowed to cite because of how credible it is. If you love words, want to learn more words or simply need a reliable dictionary (available offline, whenever!), then it’s worth the investment. I got it when they had a $10 sale so you could always wait for that to happen again if you don’t want to fork over the full $20.

Yes and No. While the design of the app and its features are 5 star, even after trying the app, then going away for 6 months, and returning: I find the daily word choice so low brow that I lose respect for the app—and the dictionary. With between 175k and 250k words in the language, could you choose dailies that respect your role as a preeminent reference? When I want to hear language in the mud, I sign onto Facebook. When I turn to the OED, I hope for enlightenment. Please do not appear ashamed of the dictionary’s pedigree or afraid of teaching the (possibly) unknown!

A little buggy at times.. It’s kind of nice to have a dictionary app. You can certainly look up and find words via Safari. At times it takes excessively long to load whatever you clicked. A-lot of the time I am happy with this app. There are times when it is simply unusable due to slow loading times.

False Advertizing. I bought the app thinking that it would be a simple dictionary that I could rely on and that would be the end of it. I was wrong. They keep trying to sell me stuff I don’t need and they keep sending me advertisements for stuff I don’t want. To get rid of the advertisements I have to pay an annual fee, apparently. I don’t know if oxford university is actually responsible for that stunt but if they are they should be ashamed of themselves. More than likely they’re getting their counsel from Apple and they are ruining their reputation accordingly. Do not get this app and never trust Apple.

User Interface is not intuitive and audio quality is okay. I bought both the Merriam Webster Dictionary App and this app. Compared to the Merriam app, this user interface is less intuitive and the audio quality of the pronunciation feature is not nearly as good. That being said, the definitions here are better than the Merriam app. Overall, the Merriam app is a better experience but this is a better dictionary. Despite being less polished, I continue to use this app on a regular basis.

Very good dictionary. Very clear explanation, and you can also learn something from the explain. I spend about 30 dollar for the Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, and found the explanation are almost same. So that dictionary doesn’t worth 30 dollar. I also spend 30 dollar to buy the collocation dictionary, there are very limited number of words, meanwhile there is no basic explanation of the word. That give you a lot of words combinations, but without telling you he word itself means.

Most helpful dictionary around for readers. I have used this app frequently when reading. I have found that good writers like to challenge readers with unfamiliar words, even when there is a more common word available that expresses the idea plainly. I feel challenged when I encounter words I don’t know and feel compelled to look them up as I read to improve my vocabulary.

English Dictionary. I use this dictionary as my go to reference. I have a Syndrome that causes me to have brain fog. When I’m lost for a word, or I write a word and it doesn’t look right, I pull up my dictionary. I am learning new words too and my friends are impressed. This is not a book of just words but for me it helps me to communicate my thoughts, explanations and improvement of memory. It’s a great resource for me. Thank you. Swakkhammer

Functionality. I’m very pleased with the functionality improvements on this app. It used to be very frustrating looking up words, because it would take several steps. Now, with the search bar at the top at all times, it is not necessary to jump to different screens to look up a new word. Thank you so much, who ever you are.

Trial is useless.. I bought the promotional trial for one year at 9.99 thinking I would have full access to evaluate and to learn about the product. I can’t even use it. It’s got limitations of 5 words and then says upgrade. Well I thought I bought a promotional year of full use to evaluate and learn. Not so. Rip off as far as I’m concerned. I probably would have continued to full price after so-called promotional year if I could have experienced the full usage of the product. I feel tricked. If you say buy a promotional year for a price and then once I have, limit its usage, that’s not right.

What a joke of a company. So in your new update you keep pressuring me to subscribe to an app that I already purchased nearly a decade ago? The audacity would be laughable if the sheer greed wasn’t so sad. It’s bold to ask $40 a year for an app that still nearly a decade outdated now and doesn’t have basic functionality. Dark mode still hasn’t been made available, though it’s been an iOS feature for nearly 3 years now. There are far better dictionary apps on the store and most of them aren’t suffering from delusions of grandeur thinking its users should pay $40 per year for a dictionary that isn’t even in the top 5 on the store.

It’s a very good source. I have been using the Oxford dictionary for over a year now and I like it. I’m a terrible speller, so I refer to the dictionary quite a bit and the dictionary has other things like word of the day and with each word you get the origin of the word and when it first showed up in English. There are some other fun things to look at that keep your mind busy so try it out.

Tiresome. Since I’m an aspiring ecclesiastical writer; I personally would hope to see you present words that are enhancing; or either violative words, or even vocabulary words; be it nouns or adjectives; or otherwise; But words that would provoke the serious readers to think, and even get into a dictionary. No matter the grandeur of it being used in a dark comedy; or that of a serious spiritual nature such as eschatology; that is most expressively profound in the art of telling the future of truths. That is if you get the gist of my drift my fellowman.

Love Oxford, but…. As much as I want to recommend an Oxford dictionary app, I can’t recommend this one. The app is useless unless you purchase a subscription. I recommend using the Merriam-Webster dictionary app instead. At least you can use the app with ads. I hope the creators of this app will consider doing something similar ( making the app functional with ads). If they did, I’d switch to using the Oxford app instantly. Also, iPhones come with the Oxford American Dictionary already preinstalled. So, it seems like a waste of money to pay for something already on the phone.

The OED is the ultimate authority on our language. As a career US diplomat, and as a lawyer, I respect theOED as the final authority on what words mean today and have meant over time. As a las student, doing research for those pressing for the impeachment of Nixon, my task was to discern what “misdemeanor” meant in 1787 when our Constitution was drafted. Did it mean a crime punishable with less than a year of confinement, as today, or something else. It was something else: mere misbehavior, not necessarily criminal.

Always learning. Words come to mind as I’m trying to communicate clearly and I’m not quite sure which is the right word-if what it means is the same as what I’m remembering. So I pick a word and check the dictionary to confirm the correct definition meaning and usage. Sometimes I’m accurate so I use the word. Other times I’m off, so I think harder and try another word until I get it right, or go on an excursion to the thesaurus. Dictionaries help me say what I mean.

Update "Special Topics". One of the best dictionaries in the English language at your fingertips is a lovely reason the buy this application. Unfortunately, the section entitled "special topics" is not up to date ie. the Queen's demise isn't reflected, nor are the British PMs after Gordon Brown. I realize they only do a new edition of the print version of the OED every now and again, but it seems like they ought to be able to keep historical matters updated on the new fangled faster moving world wide web.

Free version is painfully ad-ridden. The quality of the dictionary is superb, but there are so many ads when trying to search word definitions that become obstacles and sometimes even force you to wait 5 seconds before being able to close the ad, which makes the app almost not worth it. And out of principle it seems wrong to succumb to buying the full version because it is simply forced upon you through frustration rather than offering something more. Very disappointing, and will probably have to stick with Webster’s free app which is lighter on the ads and offers some of the premium features of Oxford like audible pronunciation.

TOO MANY ADS!!!! 😩😩😩😩. Great dictionary. Gives you a great definition. The reason I have it four stars instead of five is cuz there are way too many ads!!! The moment the opened it, it said “go premium”. Literally 10 seconds later it popped up again saying “go premium”. SO ANNOYING!!!!! But again, great dictionary overall but please get rid of ads. You can’t force people to get premium. If they want to get it they can but you can’t force it on them.

Love the app, one persistent problem. This is my go to dictionary, though I have others like Webster. App is well organized, simple to use. It works great except for one persistent issue. The feature that allows you to click on the speaker and hear the word pronounced works intermittently. When it doesn’t work I’ve gone through all the settings without success. Latter it may work fine. I’ll try removing and reinstalling.

This app is garbage and you shouldn't buy it. The original version was great. I actually spent the full $20+ to get the full version believing I was making a good investment and - embarrassingly - spent that again when I inexplicably lost access to the original purchase because I'd gotten such great use from the original. Probably should have seen that as the ominous sign it was and cut my losses, but so it goes. The new version feels like something designed by a child. I do NOT need to see a pop-up asking me to rate the app every time I need to look up a word. So now this is being deleted after 5+ years on the main screen of my phone. Posting this review in the hopes that someone learns from my mistakes. Stay away!

This app is amazing. I love this app because I am getting so much better in spelling I am in 6th grade and my sister is in pre-k and she knows so manh words now! My sister and I love to impress our mom with how much we know. I love this app so much I am even allowed to bring my phone in class with me because of this app. In Grammer I am so much better now! My sister and I have grown closer when using this app.

Fleamann. I am an American grew and threw. In Highschool my English professor was born and raised in England. Had him for four years at a private school. He introduced me, said compare Websters Chose the definitions. Study each synonym and Antonym. Did not take long to choose. My English works brought me A’s in Highschool. Placed out of all required English courses in college. I attribute this dictionary to my learning things I would never have thought to be. A GREAT TOOL FOR LEARNING AND TO EXPANDING

Shady business practices with focus on greed. I bought the full price versions of this dictionary and thesaurus (both american and british) for over $30 before they changed the software to this new version because I wanted to support Oxford brand dictionaries. After an update, my old premium versions of the dictionary and thesaurus were deleted and downgraded to this new free version. They expect their customers to pay for this app again if they do not want constant advertising. At some point the consumer has to make a stand. We should not support companies who force users to pay for products twice by invalidating old purchases through updates. 1 star stuff dude
