Landscape unavailable. I love this app. I would buy it right now. I have a case that makes my iPad look like a laptop. This does not have landscape, I always have to hold my laptop sideways and can not use my keyboard. The onscreen keyboard keeps popping up and i hate not being able to type on my keyboard. The Apple onscreen keyboard is generally not user friendly. That is why I use this thyme of case. It makes the usable space on the screen reduced and not comfortable reaching up every time. Decades of research have gone into the ergonomics of a keyboard. Resting my hands on the keyboard is important. Especially spending hours using this app. Unfortunately I would have to not recommend this or purchase it. Please contact me when you offer the landscape feature. It may seem petty, but it will change this app from child’s play to the professional realm.

Seems great, but has room to improve. The concept is awesome and there’s a great variety of stuff, but the voice recognition feature was so buggy that it made the app too frustrating to use, particularly as a paid app. It often wouldn’t pick up the first word or syllable of what I said or would wildly misrecord what I said and not be consistent with what it said my errors were across multiple trials of the same sentence. I would say it’s that I need to work on my accent, but I use Spanish daily for work and am not misunderstood at nearly the rate the app misunderstood me. I may return when I’ve finished with other materials to see if this aspect has improved. Definitely a lot of potential with the app!

App doesn't work anymore. I've been a user of this app for over two years. Recently the app stopped working so I put in a help desk request for suggestions. Their response was for me to notify them via the app that isn't working. That's like asking a person whose car with an engine that doesn't start to drive to the shop instead of getting a tow. So the only way this app works for me now is to uninstall and then reinstall every day. That's a real pain so I am probably not renewing if this doesn't get resolved.

Technically works, but buggy and janky. Don’t expect any UI polish. - Images pop in and out as you scroll. - Audio will only sometimes play while the app is in the background. - Forward/backward controls put the subtitles out of sync with the audio. - Dragging the week slider has random effects on the player, including jumping you right past the quiz to the next lesson. - At the end of a video, the final subtitle is replaced with the first subtitle. - Sometimes videos play twice and I’m not sure it’s on purpose. - Tapping a word makes the whole screen jump left for no perceivable reason, then it shows the definition after a pause. - No clear instruction on what to do when a course is up for review… everything just turns orange, but only some orange buttons make it blue again. - Subtly different interaction than on the web, so switching between the two is confusing. (For example, some videos on the web are audio-only on iOS.) - Two loading spinners appear on the screen at a time sometimes. - No loading spinners have cancel buttons. - Going back one screen often resets your scroll position so you lose your place. - Etc. But hey, it hasn’t crashed yet, and it gets the job done.

Free trial but only with proof of payment.. It’s an issue as old as the “free triel” gimmick. You try the free triel but only after giving a FOP because the developer is well aware people forget to cancel and then you are struck paying. Free trials should be free and automatically cancel at the end of the triel period unless you provide a form of payment. If the app is that good then people will pay after the trial. *obviously the developer doesn’t listen to feedback. The 1 star reviews are all from people who don’t want to sign up for a paid free trial and then have to cancel the subscription. Why not offer 14 days free then require a payment to continue. No more 1 star reviews!!

How do I avoid being charged for a subscription. PLEASE HELP. Just received an email about a billing problem of $240 for a subscription that I don’t even remember signing up for. I never subscribe to anything so I don’t know if it was unintentional or just started charging after a trial. I believe I canceled it right now and I also sent an email out, but I need to know how to avoid being charged. It hasn’t charged me yet as there was “a problem with the billing” But I keep reading comments that say if you cancel at least one day before the subscription ends, you won’t be charged. However, I was just less than a week late. The emails that were meant to notify me got lost in my inbox as I am a high school student who already gets hundreds of emails for school and from colleges, especially during this time as school has been transferred online. Also, can’t even afford this because I do not have a job. This app has been deleted for so long, I don’t have any memory of even using it. On top of that, it’s not even charging to my card, but to someone else’s. I cannot deal with this right now, someone please help.

Most useful. This is currently the most useful AND interesting Japanese learning app for me right now. If it weren’t for this app, I would be reading off song lyrics and short stories and translating them myself so it’s nice to have this app make things more convenient for you. Price is a little steep compared to others. I wish they had a 6 month plan too. Also, would be good to have a way to request translation of certain videos that we like. For example, I really like the learning from the LINE OFFLINE series and would like to request more of it but there’s currently only 5 of them! :( Anyway thanks for putting this together, team!

Makes me excited to learn!. Instead of grudgingly doing my Chinese practice daily, I actually enjoy it because this app makes it not monotonous because you can switch it up with music videos, lessons, dramas, and stories Things I like: 1 that you can flip “pages” throughout the video so you can focus on one line at a time instead of being overwhelmed with all the text at once 2 that you can click on a word and have all kinds of info about it and add it to your cards Things I really wish would change (I’m on the free trial and am deciding wether or not to cancel or continue and subscribe) Btw I’m doing Chinese 1 during the videos, I really wish there was a slider sort of thing so I could choose to cover the pinyin or the English so I could practice recognizing characters or to cover just the English to focus on Chinese, maybe to test how much I understand. Sometimes it’s hard to even see the Chinese because I see the English and then I’m really just reading the English and not focusing on the Chinese words. A movable slider to cover the English would be very beneficial 2 during the quiz questions I wish I could be tested on characters not just pinyin 3the videos will save to my playlist one day and be gone the next day...? 4 a genre filter would be nice so I could listen/watch depending on what I was in the mood for that day :)

So many little errors and annoyingly loud at times.. I just signed up for the free trial today and did the first 2 lessons. The pictures are very helpful except when they provide the wrong picture. For example I was supposed to say he drinks coffee but the picture was a female drinking water. At the end of each section when you click the button to check your progress and get coins it’s twice as loud as the lesson and very startling and annoying. I will be canceling before the end of the free trial.

Great, but not to be used by itself. This is one of the best language learning apps, I’ve come across. The videos offer you a great way to develop your listening skills. The quiz sections are nice to develop reading/writing, but the live videos help you work on your comprehension. That being said, this won’t help you master a language alone. If you have a music streaming service, find music in your target language and work on listening and translating slowly. The music helps sink it into your brain better if you’re actively listening. So, while it could always be improved, this is an excellent app

Moves fast but a very smart app. I started with some experience of Japanese-otherwise I’m not sure I could have absorbed the kanji and hiragana script so quickly. The method is good, though. I encourage anyone working in Japanese to get to know the keyboard as well as possible before going too far-it’s tricky especially to access katakana (necessary for imported words) on the iOS Japanese keyboard. (It’s easy and free to access the keyboard, though-just search online for info.)

WARNING!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD. June of last year I tried a free trial of this app and decided it was not for me . Fast forward to this year and I purchased a new phone . As It was downloading the apps onto the new iPhone, this one popped up. I couldnt remember what it was so I opened it to check it out . BIG MISTAKE!! They immediately starting taking money out of my account for this app! 30 dollars is a lot of money to steal from someone for opening your app for 3 minutes! It is being disputed at the moment through apple. Download at your own risk, they will start automatically removing money from your account though if you do!!

Great Customer Service. Sometimes, life overtakes our best intentions and that includes our plans to make good use of an App which shows so much promise that we put it on annual Auto-Pay. Circumstances forced me to spend my year’s days in much different ways and I didn’t realize a FluentU year had gone by until $144 showed up as a credit card charge. I asked customer service if I could pay for just a month and get a refund for the rest of the year. They promptly set my account to the free version and refunded the entire annual fee of $144. Aiza B. from the “FluentU Customer Happiness TEAM” was gracious in email exchanges and made me feel very confident in recommending FluentU.

Too fast. I gave this 3 stars because the audio player you have to do before doing the quiz goes wayyyyy too fast. They should put it in the app so that you can put the speed at what you learn at. Also it should show the different levels of pronouns with the verb you are trying to learn at the beginning of each lesson. Everyone learns a different way and they should take that into account. And I have bought several different spanish apps and they all have their flaws in one way or another.

Just okay so far. This app has me conflicted because for the most part I do think it’s is a very good way to learn a language. But some of the execution is just off. The filter options can be slightly confusing. The UI just seems low-end for a service that is paid for monthly. And I’m having issues with taking the quizzes even though I’ve watched the videos before. If I’m paying for the service, I don’t see why I need to watch the video first anyway.

One of the best apps for intermediate language learning. This is probably one of the best apps for the intermediate stages of learning. They have tons of native content to really sharpen your listening comprehension and broaden your vocab and sentence exposure. That being said, I am rating it 4 stars based on a few problems: 1) the app is overall kind of buggy. It mostly works but sometimes it’s frustrating. 2) the computerized voices are annoying. It’d be nice if the quiz section always had the original sentence audio available to listen to for all problem types. 3) it is pretty expensive. You could use something free like subs2srs to get a similar (if much less convenient) experience.

Great learning tool, buggy. Ok I just spent 30min with the beginning Korean section and I am SO impressed with how quickly I was able to learn. I had to knock off a couple stars for it being pretty buggy already, though. Also I have some criticism about the UX for the quizzes. I don’t have time for a more in depth review so I’ll update later. The learning strategy helped me parse sounds and even read. The issues do impact learning, however. If the experience was a bit more smooth this app would be a revelation. I’m not sure yet if I would pay for it at that price with these issues.

Excellent Customer Service. There was a glitch in their system and I was mistakenly charged. Anne from customer service looked into it for me and remedied the situation. Great customer service. Also, I used lots of language learning programs and I would put this one in my top 3 specifically for listening comprehension, this has always been the biggest challenge for me. I like that you can learn the vocab first, then watch the videos and change the speed. It’s also great for reading. There is not way to practice speaking so keep that in mind if that’s your goal.

Loving it so far. I’ve only started with the app and have some basic Japanese from other apps and self study as well as a full version of Rosetta Stone. This has been by far the most user friendly. Rosetta Stone is brutal where FluentU is gentle and fun while still teaching you. The ability to see the kana, kanji and romaji is brilliant. Once you get your kana memorized well, you can turn off the romaji. I have high hopes for the long term of this app combined with formal college classes. I don’t think any single app or class will get you to a competent level. It is the combination of several methods and live practice with a native speaker if possible will get you there. I see this as being a solid foundation to build off of.

Stop badgering me for a review!. Suddenly after every video that I watch or every group that I work through you asking for a review, even though I have that turned off in my iPad. Somehow, you are circumventing the options that Apple has installed for me to have to have control over my own equipment and that makes me leery about your integrity as a company. The app content is ok but it’s frustrating to be constantly interrupted when I’m supposed to be learning. 7 May 2023 - I just dropped from three to two stars. Why? Because it’s started again; being hounded for a review while I’m trying to study even though I already gave a review a few days ago! At this rate I will not be renewing my subscription. I only regret that I chose an annual subscription; the initial free trial was flawless but I guess that’s how you get pulled on.

I enjoy this app. Hello! I haven’t used the app yet but I like what the ads are showing me so I’m gonna give it try! However, like the app Mango, I was able to use my library card so the source of income to the app came from the library so I can learn the language. So if you could get a library thing going that would be great! I’m a high schooler and I really wanna use this app to help me learn Chinese because I love it and because it’ll make my class easier! Thank you.

Wow this was unexpected. This app REALLY teaches you! I’m currently learning Chinese (I have a bit of background with Chinese but I’m rusty) and the way they teach it makes SO much sense I actually WANT to learn I’m constantly on this app trying to improve. I have a 3 day streak going on and I’m happy i feel im getting better im still a bit green but I know if I keep up with this I’ll be better!

Wish you got more for basic subscription. It’s better than Duolingo, but barely. And too expensive for what you get. The basic subscription is really limited and to get unlimited is $240/yr which seems like a lot for what it is so far. So far the videos aren’t as immersive as advertised and are the same basic vocabulary presented like any other course. Also I have the same issue with this as I have with Duolingo, which is when the other language phrases things differently it only gives the familiar version and not the literal translation, which can be confusing when trying to build on what we’ve learned so far. For example: Je suis une femme = I am a woman But I am hungry isn’t je suis faim, it’s j’ai faim. Literally “I have hunger”, but they don’t tell you that. I took French in high school and am refreshing what I already know but I feel like if I hadn’t I’d be really confused by that. Especially since even in the vocabulary list it says “I am hungry”. So basically so it’s a really expensive Duolingo that’s slightly more accurate in pronunciation. Meh. If it doesn’t improve soon I’m not paying for it once the trial is up.

Way Too Expensive for Sub-Par Quality. Very expensive for what you get. I’m already spending $15/month on this plan, and there are only a small handful of videos available in Japanese and I can’t even access all my flashcards unless I shell out another $5/month. Kind of a ripoff. Also, the UI isn’t great, I often have to start my entire video over from the begin when scrolling back to the videos from the “add to flashcard” deck screen. I wasn’t going to write a review, but since they kept asking me to write one from the main screen every time I logged in, here it is.

Automatically charged 33$ a month!!. I downloaded this app for the free trial. I barely even remember using the app I may have used it for a day or two and then deleted it. It continued to charge me 33$ a month! Without my knowledge and without any clear notification. I noticed the charges and was very confused as I had long since deleted the app and have no memory of purchasing a subscription for an app I barely used. They would not return my money and on top of that it took me 30 stressful minutes to even cancel my subscription. Save yourself the stress and DO NOT even download this app!!! It requires your card and automatically charges you.

Great For Intermediate Learning. I began my journey with learning German about 4 years ago, and I have to say from the outset that this program was not there at the beginning. I worked with several different do-it-yourself language tutoring programs; one of them I am still with (Babbel), one I really didn’t care for (Duolingo), and one I found helpful but no longer actively use (Lingvist). This program, I think (and this is just from my own personal experience), is better suited to those who already have a basic, fundamental understanding of their foreign language of choice. It is definitely helpful, before you engage with FluentU, to know some vocabulary and have some familiarity with how the grammar works. If you are at that stage in your language learning development, then this program can be an excellent tool in helping you further develop your vocabulary and overall comprehension. Don‘t look for them to coddle you - the words come at you fast, and it is your responsibility to learn them and follow along. I chose the intermediate level here (a little above what I can handle), and it‘s hard but I like being challenged. So, bottom line: If you are serious about learning a new language, and you already have some prior knowledge of the basics, I highly recommend FluentU to keep you moving forward!

Great for Intermediate Learners. I studied French in school but never reached fluency. I have tried over the years to improve my French, but I’ve found it hard to find resources at the right level. I have been using this app for a few weeks now on the Intermediate 2 level, and it has been perfect for me. There are countless videos, curated for my level, and I enjoy watching them. I have learned so much vocab and am getting a better feel for conversational French syntax. My kids are also using the app at Beginner 1. The videos available to them are not quite as engaging, so it remains to be seen whether or not they will stick with it. I also do wish the app had a family plan, as having the whole family using the app is pricey.

This program is great. I’ve been trying to learn and speak fluent Spanish for 42 years. My grammar is poor and I can’t apply it . This program is so much better than any of the other Spanish apps I’ve tried. It’s interactive and approaches the subject from a variety of angles. I’ve used most of the others before and they are too basic and don’t give you real life applications. This app does. I hope there are higher levels of learning too. I’m learning a lot and finally feel like I know what verbs and object pronouns to use when.

Accessibility Concerns. Great app conceptually, but making the closed captions only available for users with a paid subscription makes the app unusable for many hard of hearing and d/Deaf users. While I understand the need to have some content made exclusive to those who pay for it, putting basic accessibility features behind a paywall seems a bit unreasonable. While I can see why you might restrict the translated captions, the untranslated closed captions, at least, should be available to all users.

Returning to FluentU. I tried FluentU several years ago and thought it was interesting but was never really hooked on it and went on to other sites and forms of improving my Spanish. Now with the stay at home situation, I thought I would give it another look. This site has made major improvements in my opinion from its initial start up. I am very excited to make this my go to learning site for improving my Spanish. If this doesn’t improve my language abilities it will be from my lack of effort. It is engaging, fun, addictive, and interactive. Thank you fluentU , so glad I give you a second look.

Next-Level learning. I’ve been looking for an app that is all inclusive like this. Really excellent work. The ability to pause the video/audio, click on narrative’s vocabulary below for additional examples and then return right back to where you left off SAVES SO MUCH TIME! $20 really is priced pretty reasonably once you consider how much more time you’re saving by concentrating on learning rather than researching. Also the ability to slow down the audio 0.5x speed for example is so useful!!

Challenging. The quizzes really make you prove you understand words and phrases by putting them in other contexts. I studied Spanish academically for 7 years, have visited Spanish-speaking countries, and have studied an additional 1.5 years simply out of desire to truly become fluent. For that you really need to be immersed and speak it every day with those around you. No app can provide that, but FluentU does a fantastic job exposing you to that language as it is spoken in its normal cadence and rhythm. Learning Spanish this way is something I wish I’d been able to do from the beginning; it wouldn’t have taken me so long to get where I am. Watch the videos. Don’t worry that it might seem impossibly hard. If you don’t fail sometimes, you won’t improve. Keep it up, and you’ll see incredible progress.

Eh, I’ve had better. I realize all language learning apps/programs have their flaws. My problem with FluentU is I’m paying $20 to be an app tester. I’ve been using this program for several years, I’ve completed Beginner 1&2, Intermediate 1, and am nearly finished with Intermediate 2. I’m not exaggerating when I say that every time there is an update, there are issues. I’ve emailed customer service so many times, I’m absolutely certain they ignore my complaints at this point. Sometimes the issues are fixed just to return at the next update. For example, the sentence translations will repeat themselves within a lesson. The lessons don’t go to the review or completed queue after you’ve completed them so it’s difficult to tell which lessons you’re done with and which are new. There are also the complaints of other users regarding the portrait mode and interface issues. I live with a native speaker and there are translation issues in a number of lessons. The app only runs well on a current Apple device, it’s slow otherwise. Don’t expect any kind of refund when you have issues, they are however, quick to offer an apology and reassurance that “they’ll pass it along to the devs.” I do feel I’ve learned a good amount and appreciate that the videos are mostly current. This year, I had enough and bought a different language learning program and am finally saying au revoir to FluentU.

Shady trial scam. Careful before you offer your credit card info. Free trial is only with credit card. Once you start you’re told to cancel anytime by downgrading to free in settings. In settings you’re only given the chance to upgrade. Pricey but reasonable content. Can’t forgive the bait and switch though. Perhaps less shady than absentmindedness in app development. Please post instructions that actually work for unenrolling upon beginning the trial or update your app to align with the instructions you currently provide.

Be careful. They will reel you in with a free trial but the app has no way of contacting them or deleting the subscription. I tried the app for a while but it isn’t very good for learning a new language. I stopped using it for a couple days and when i went to delete my account so i didn’t have to oh the subscription fee it didn’t work. They also conveniently put me down for the yearly subscription which was $150. So now I had to pay a subscription for an app that I won’t ever use bc it doesn’t help with learning a new language. If i could give this app less stars I would.

Great concept, app needs work. This is an awesome way to learn. The app interface, however, needs work. The current way is a bit counterintuitive. The app would greatly benefit from a categorization system for the videos instead of just a list. For instance, that anime with “Ginta” as the main character: it has four parts but those parts are really hard to find. It would be great if they were grouped together so you could complete them as a set. The same goes for videos of that same genre. You could have categories like news, information, drama, anime, etc.

A Language Learners Dream App. I thought up something like this in my bead many years ago when I was learning my first two languages. But it didn't exist. I even searched for it a few times over the years. I just found it this week ans cant believe it. I am a critical person and want to find something to criticize but I can’t. Its fantastic in every way. So many features I feel it must have been created by language learners. Love this app.

Didn’t make it past login. Spent several minutes trying to set up an account, got frustrated, and gave up. In today’s day, there is no good reason to not have SSO (single sign-on with Apple/Facebook/Google/etc...). Moreover having rules that a PW should have a number is super outdated and bad security practice. I have a PW manager generate and save passwords for me using several random dictionary words separated by a special character. Not allowing passwords like that introduces a lot of friction into the process. Perhaps it’s obnoxious to give up so soon and leave a review like this, but recently I’ve been taking login process to be a good indicator of app-quality and overall UX. If y’all don’t put the effort in to do things right and follow modern best practices, I’m not spending my time or money

I don’t get bored and I’m learning phrases. I was an intermediate speaker before getting this app. I get so bored of other apps. This one is not boring, and the content is very recent. You get to watch commercials and music videos etc. I don’t spend much time on it each day, but still feel like I have been learning. Especially colloquial/slang phrases and idioms that aren’t taught in most classes. Definitely worth checking out.

The best I have found. I have used Rosetta Stone, Babel, and a number of different podcasts, flash cards, etc over the past two years but FluentU has the most useful and engaging way of virtual immersion I have found. I have achieved fluency with 2 hours per day over the past few months. Excellent and easy to stick with.

Great if used correctly. This app gives you many advantages that others don’t, but it can feel overwhelming to beginners. A few tips: 1) Study the tones first. Train yourself to hear the tones and see if you can type the pinyin on your keyboard based on what you heard. Mimic the tones you hear. This app speaks them very slowly at first so you can hear the tone, then repeats it at a normal pace. DO NOT study with pinyin because you will use it like a crutch and it will really slow down your character recognition pace. 2) Do one playlist per day, don’t go crazy. Language learning isn’t a race, it’s not even a marathon; it’s a lifelong commitment. If you learn even 10 words per day and you learn them very well, then by the end of a year you will at least have basic conversational fluency. Learning 20, 30, 40 words per day will test your memorization ability, but it won’t improve your language skill. 3) Open your mouth! Repeat the words you hear in the exercises. If you’re not doing this, you’re skipping a very important exercise of these lessons. In the “audio” portions of the lessons, let it run and repeat a few times while repeating the words each time. They’re usually less than a minute, so it goes quick. Aim for 7-10 repeats before doing the quiz.

Zero free services anymore.. I took a break from this app for a while and the words to review piled up. I was slowly working through them on the free version, because it was unrealistic to watch new videos and learn new words while I still had all those words to review. I had planned to get through them all, then start paying again for a full experience so I could move foreword. I got from about 3000+ to 1700, and it took a WHILE. But I was improving my spoken ability at the same time. But now I can’t access them because even ONLY using the review section is asking $30/month from me. This is really disappointing. I feel like I want to quit. I could pay for multiple other services with this amount of money.

Great app for learning typical everyday language. I have been trying to teach myself Chinese for years and this app really helped me stick with it consistently. I find it easy to use. What I like most about it is it teaches common ways of saying things, the stuff you hear on the street or on TV shows (which is a big reason I’m learning Chinese). This is an invaluable adjunct learning tool. It tests you on writing, but I still supplement w Skritter to get the strokes correct, and I still read textbooks to get the reasoning behind grammar clear. But to drill into your mind the common ways people normally speak, this is where to go do you don’t get bogged down academically. Sometimes you just have to practice building sentences without thinking too much about what goes where so that it’s more reflexive and natural rather than intellectual. The only downside is when I’m not on WiFi, the movie clips take forever to load.

Excellent idea, so-so implementation. The idea of learning a language using colloquial videos is great. It’s a much better way to learn how to listen and understand a language. The main problem I have is that the app is buggy. During most of the videos, when you click a word that you don’t know and add it to your vocab, it often gets a stuck progress spinner over the video that never goes away, so you’re locked out of that video. Please fix this.. it makes it difficult to make much progress.

App fails to identify oral input. I did an exercise where the app refused to recognize anything close to my input. I had to repeat "Por mi, ja! Te dejaba sin desayuno ". After about 20 tries from me and 2 by my Mexican housekeeper who doesn't speak much English, it never once recognized anything close to what we were saying. It would add words and even numbers into what it reported that it had heard - and I mean words that were so far from anything we said. While much about this app looks good, if there is any way to truly annoy the user it is to make them do the same sentence over and over with ridiculous results unrelated to any way any person could possibly answer the question. Very sad as I love the idea behind this app and if it would work as intended then it would be so great.

CAN’T CANCEL FREE TRIAL. I have tried a dozen times to cancel during the free trial so that I don’t get charged.I haven’t gotten a single response to any of my emails. Instructions to cancel say to go to your subscription and hit downgrade, but that option does not exist on my app or on the website. I am so stressed out that I’m going to get charged for this and I cannot afford it. DO NOT give these people your credit card number!! ** upgrading review because they finally helped me cancel. I strongly suggest making canceling easier and at the least actually having a downgrade to free button if you are going to say that is how to cancel in the instructions. I hate giving bad reviews, but this process has been awful. Thank you for letting me cancel.

Excellent w caveats. I purchased a year subscription and this program is excellent. It utilizes a Leitner/spaced repetition learning technique with multimedia—reading, listening siri-type voice, speaking, and native speaker video & anime—often with normal & slowed speeds for the siri readings. Caveats—It might be worth learning Kana (Katakana & Hiragana) and some simple Kanji before subscribing. I also found a jisho/dictionary and a verb book useful for clarification and rules.

Really thorough training. I love the teaching method in this, it's very engaging and super helpful hearing words and phrases in different contexts to learn them completely. My one complaint is that when you get something right, a big green circle shows up to congratulate you but it covers up the sentences that I'm trying to re-read. Not that big a deal, but just the sentence highlighted in green to say it's correct would be enough for me. Thanks FluentU for this epic language learning app!!!

Read, write, listen, speak. I’ve been learning Japanese everyday for 2 years now with various tools and just found FluentU. Your brain will learn faster watching videos of people using words in context, it’s that simple. I even type the sentences out on a Word document while I’m watching. Then shadow talk with the voices at 50% playback. Then take the quizzes. Read, write, listen, and speak all in one. I’m making gains faster this way. A big plus is you can increase the size of the font pretty big for the kanji. This I really appreciate. ありがとうございます😊

Worked great until it didn’t. I started this app with a quick review of the beginner level. When I tried to move up to the intermediate level, the course button disappeared and I was lift with only the explore button for practice. Same issue when I changed languages. After searching for answers online, I contacted the developer for assistance and had no response. I wouldn’t have started using this app if I’d known I couldn’t keep building on what I’d learned.

1 Star. It cost money and it wouldn’t have Swedish (witch I want to Learn)

Love it - so useful for learning Chinese. This is the app I've been waiting for for ages. Follow along with the video, subtitles contain characters, pinyin and English, and you can tap any word for a definition (plus examples on how to use that word)

Great app!. Really easy to dip in and out even when you have just a few mins to spare, or sit down for longer. Allows you to hear and repeat full sentences, drill down into individual words, watch videos. Very accessible.

Easy and Fun!. I like the fact that the app gives you a 15 day trial. It's only been the second day and I love the content. It's super easy to use and it makes the tedious learning fun to do. Great app. Good job.

Landscape orientation. I love it so far (it’s been a day) but this isn’t a real iPad app as it only works vertically. Many of us use iPads with a keyboard and indeed want to type answers with a keyboard. I’ve invested a lot of time in learning to type Hangul and it’s really the only way to type in the text answers. I’ve developed apps and developing a landscape orientation while not changing anything else is a trivial endeavor. It’s a real dealbreaker so please invest in this.

Useful app but too expensive. I found this app is very useful for those who want to sharpen their literacy level in a fun and entertaining ways. Not long after downloading this app, I received an email from the developer that I need to pay $30 a month to use the premium service (including subtitles and quiz etc). Well, I am totally agree that this service is deserved to be a paid app but $30 / month... Seems a but too much. Hope they could adjust the price soon so more users across the world can get the benefit.

iPhone compatiblity. I purchased FluentU and really like it, I was completing my goal almost everyday but last week the app stopped opening on my phone. I deleted and reinstalled and was back to watching videos and practicing…… for a few minutes. I finished some work and went back to study to find the app wouldn’t open again. After A LOT of searching it seems the app will no longer open on my IPhone 11. When did this change occur. I REALLY think you should be far more forthcoming with such information!! As said I really like(d) FluentU but this is really disappointing……. To continue to use on a mobile I’ll need to buy a new phone, something I just can’t afford……. so frustrated!!!

Needs interface upgrade for iPhone X. Very good app for learning languages (I am learning Japanese). The interface needs to be updated for the iPhone X. One year on and still hasn’t been updated. Did get a full screen experience for 2-3 days however latest update went back to the black bars at the top and bottom. What is going on?

Could be good but is buggy and not fixed for long time. The tool could be good but the bugs are not fixed for long time. One annoying problem is that if you have a long list of exercises to catch up with, the app executes them to some point and then is stuck with the same number of items. There is no way to workaround. I tried use my online account but the web app progress is not in synch with the iPhone app progress. Waited for this to be fixed for 6 month - nothing is done. Big disappointment - cancelling my account

Beware! Dishonest 2 week free trial. Beware! A proper free trial wouldn’t charge you a $350 annual subscription at the end of the ‘free’ trial. It wouldn’t require any input from you; it would just end, not require you to opt out 24 hours before the end of the ‘free’ trial to avoid being charged. It could then ask you to opt in to a subscription. This is completely dishonest and underhanded.

A great tool, landscape mode on iPad would improve it.. Fluentu is a great supplementary tool for my Mandarin learning. Watching and listening to real media, combined with quizzes, really helps to build vocabulary and create a sense of immersion in the language. The app would be a lot easier to use if it supported landscape mode on iPad. I use an iPad Pro, so it is annoying to remove the iPad from its Smart Keyboard just to use this app.

Update content. I’m enjoying studying French with this app and over the past couple of years it used to add content regularly, but recently it doesn’t seem to have added any new lessons. Am I missing something?

The learning resource we have been waiting for. They've finally realized the iPhone version! Excellent learning tool. Really useful for learning Mandarin as it's spoken. Couldn't recommend it enough.

Fantastic language learning app. Having used the app for several months now, I'm disappointed that more hasn't been done to fix pronunciation bugs. I am using the free version but am unwilling to upgrade based on this. It's impossible to know how something should be pronounced based on the faulty computer generated pronunciation. It's problematic and urgently needs a fix.

An excellent tool - first of its kind!. Great tool for learning a language, recommend to use this in conjunction with other learning resources. App runs smooth and built very well. Suggestion: show verb conjugations when tapped for the definition during the video.

Great app but i think moving in a bad direction. This app is amazing, theres a lot of content and i love the ready to review feature (which automatically updates all the time so you dont have to keep track on what needs reviewing yourself, which would be really hard if you’ve got 3000 + words that youve learnt) Anyway all that aside my gripe is that the recent patch added the feature of choosing between knowing all the letters that goes into the word you need to choose (block letters), or just knowing how many letters there are in the word. (Little lines come up for each letter, like in a hangman game). I feel like making the questions easier to answer does a disservice to the people who want to study a language seriously. The major update before this one included the hints 1 and 2 and 3, but the good thing about that one is it gave the option of not asking for the hints at all, for the people who didnt want extra help with the questions. Id love to see that incorporated in this update as well, for people who dont want the lines, but i was told via email by Aiza that we wouldnt be expecting it anytime soon. Anyway, its still a great app, just thought my request for this update might be taken more seriously on the review page. Thanks heaps for the app though fluentu team, its still great :)

Orientation on iPad Air. Pretty happy so far but I wouldn’t that much for an iPad and not be able to switch the orientation to landscape.?? Please fix

Immersive. I love that FluentU also uses local films and songs for learning texts. It’s great to hear native speakers and language as it is used in real life. I really enjoyed studying Гадкий Я and Это Всё.

Not suitable for iPad. An app is not iPad-friendly if you have to turn your iPad to vertical to use it. Until your app can be used on an iPad in the horizontal form (which is how an iPad is intended to be used) you’ll only be getting a one star rating from me.

Amazing app.. Doesnt matter what language you want to learn, fluentU is an amazing app that will greatly ASSIST your learning capabilities and practice. It does a great job of providing you learning methods and has access to a lot of learning material. It is definitely worth the $30 per month ( i was paying $360 for 10 week courses ). To fully utilise this app, you will still need regular vocal and listening practice with a native speaker, but as I said you can greatly supplement your learning through the week inbetween classes or conversations with your native speaker.

Very easy and useful app!. What a great app to learn from! Currently using this to learn mandarin. So far so good. The audio is very clear and there's good learning programs to reinforce my learning. Good to know there's different levels too. I'm a newbie :)

Could be fantastic.. Great idea but poor execution. The app is a difficult to navigate, buggy, difficult to use mess.

Too expensive. It looks great but $45 a month is just way too expensive. I wouldn’t be comfortable paying any more than $15 a month for any subscription service. Maybe you guys should offer a cheaper single language option for subscription? If you do I’ll be back.

Please add Croatian!!. While I know Croatian isn’t a widely spoken language it is also spoken in the neighbouring countries around it. Please add Croatian!!!!

Can't open it. Whilst I'm sure it's a great app, unfortunately I can't open it because it closes every time :( I really want to use it

Makes learning Chinese much easier. I've tried lots of different language tutor apps and websites, and FluentU is the best I've come across so far. Easy to use and entertaining. It's fun.

Useful and different. I use FluentU for French. It is a fun way to practice, and exposes you to authentic and up-to-date language. The digital voice used in the exercises sounds odd at times, compared to a live speaker, and I have quibbled with the transcription/translation of the occasional word. On the whole, though, it is a good system for making native-speech video clips accessible to learners. As well as language, you get pop culture and educational exposure relative to you target language.

Ripoff. I signed for the free month at the end of the month was automatically billed $350 for the next year. Total rip-off.

John. Hands down the best

Very useful resource. Even as a newbie level user, I find this app very effective. The drills are a good daily practice and the video features are excellent study tools, especially as where I live there are not so many Spanish speakers.

excellent. I recommend it highly. The friendly support and the informative emails/tips is an additional plus and surprise.

Booo. You can’t learn Duch or many other languages

Too expensive and too childish. I want to learn Russian. The only way to access this app is to pay a fortune. I immediately removed myself from the free trial after seeing just one video of random objects in a kitchen (some which I didn’t even see in real life or know the word in english). The video would buffer a lot when I tried to rewind and was lagged with the sound. I shouldn’t have to struggle to relocate a word I wanted to see again. Then the quiz... a bunch of words pop up that I don’t recognise and I’m just lost. What is the context? The videos are also way too childish, when the advertisement for this app was a curious funny dude. I don’t enjoy little kids laughing in the background of my videos. At all. I had hopes for this app but I’m disappointed by the content and unbelievably high price. It’s not a bad app, it may still have some value used by the right person. Just not me. I have more comfortable access learning Russian with Duolingo.

Scam. This app charged me $350 aud after having it installed a few months without warning. Day away from this app

Poor value. What is wrong with your iPad app? It shuts down as soon as I get past the password and only wakes in vertical mode.

Refund?. Can I get a refund? Tried the free trial and decided I didn't like it, I deleted the app but the subscription continued and I had to pay $43 dollars for nothing!!

One of the best language learning apps. I’ve used many language learning apps over time, this is definitely by far the most comprehensive and interactive apps. Makes remembering and absorbing the information more natural and interesting.

No good! Poorly made - for Japanese learning. This is not a good app for those who wish to learn Japanese. There are several errors in the written content and the app uses an automated computer generated voice for the audio. The computer generated voice makes several errors in pronunciation which will lead the learner to mimic those errors. I'd give this an app a miss until they correct the errors and get rid of the computer generated voice.

Great app!!. It's really amazing app i like the gradual process that it's used to make you memorise the words and phrases... but the most amazing thing is the short videos the add with clear french pronunciation.. love it ❤❤❤

Mandarin audio checker gone bad. Used to be 5 star. For some reason there mandarin audio checking isn’t working properly now. As someone who struggles with tones it used to be so hopefull, now I’ll look elsewhere.

Intuitive language learning tool, too pricey.. I’m enjoying using the app so far and have found it more intuitive and educational than other apps I’ve tried. The amount of resources available (audio and video clips) is amazing. With all that said I still don’t think the premium price they’re asking is completely justified. You could get a semester of in person classes for an annual subscription. So while I’d like to give this app five stars it does feel like it could be a lot better for what they’re asking. Also on a small note, the “grammar tips” aren’t very useful for the layman who doesn’t have a firm grasp of language terminology like “prepositions”, “dative cases”, “clauses” etc. It would be more helpful if the grammar tips were less technical and more contextual for real world use, conversation etc. E.g “This word is more often used in the context of..”

Good in principle. This app has a lot of potential. And part of the execution is good too. But the developers have not invested enough to bring the interface up to a level that I’d rate higher than poor. It can’t cope with a landscape screen orientation on an iPad, and there are bugs in managing your vocab lists. The way I use it is to watch the videos and add the words and phrases I don’t know into a flash card list of reasonable size which I then proceed to memorise. One limitation is that you are stuck with the very specific verb form in the video and there is no link to the infinitive. So it is difficult to generalise what you learn. A small addition but one that would make a difference. A bug is that when you add more words to an existing flash card set, you sometimes cannot study those cards. The next problem is that the flash cards are only one way ... in my case English to Spanish. In my view it is important to study both ways. My final and perhaps biggest problem is that they just did an update and in no longer works at all. I can’t even get on to lodge a fault. And I just spent hundreds of dollars for an annual subscriptions. As I said, good in principle. But they need to invest in their program (and fix the failed update!)

How to contact a developer or responsible person by email, I have faced a terrible problem. I want to contact them as fast as possible

Please cancel my subscription. I did not learn much from this app, but more importantly am finding it impossible so far to unsubscribe, therefore I continue to be charged for an app I do not use, very frustrating.

Great app. As far as immersion goes this is as good as you could ask for. So many different materials to choose from and there's nothing like variety to help learning.

Best and Most Entertaining App Out There. I am learning Spanish and have run through several of the paid courses online. This one is by far my favourite. My only reservation is that I find it hard to distinguish between South American Spanish and Spanish as spoken in Spain. Otherwise it’s brilliant!

The best way to fill comprehension gaps!. I was dreading having to watch subtitled German films with remote in hand and dictionary in the other and these guys have organised it so look up is quick and the background info is great! Well done!

Really good support. I subscribe to both Duolingo and FluentU and have to confess that I’ve only been using FluentU for a few weeks and Duolingo for about 18 months. FluentU is for an Aussie almost four times as expensive as Duolingo if you compare the cost of the premium access. I decided to try a year of FluentU and do the lessons in tandem when Duolingo was all too frustrating with a complete lack of grammar explanations and google searches were always bringing up good simple ones on FluentU. The app is excellent but not always intuitive to work out. The great strength is that they reply quickly to questions and are extremely helpful. Also there are far more video clips than one can trawl through for extra immersion and getting an ear for the language-considering the cost per year of language classes locally it is very much worth the investment:)

More languages please?. I’m trying to become more fluent in Arabic, but it’s hard when I live in an English speaking country and most of the apps only teach me how to say hello and ask for the bathroom. I want to be able to have casual conversations with a native speaker without any language barriers and I feel as though this app would be perfect for such. Only one problem, Arabic isn’t an option. It would be great if this app had a wider variety of languages to learn. Other than that, it was fun messing around and learning a few Spanish words, I would definitely recommend this app to anyone trying to learn a second language.

More guidance please. Honestly though content wise this is probably the most beneficial app to learn languages on I’ve tried so many others. Only thing that needs improvement is like the guidance. I’m trying to learn Japanese and there’s so many ways of saying things but i don’t know exactly how to say certain things for specific situation. But other than that it’s too nice and the price is really worth all the content everything is pretty much one in place, at least for someone that’s beginner/intermediate

Unauthorized billing. I am being billed on this and never subscribed. I have repeatedly requested a refund and to cancel - but it continues. This is not a legitimate company

WARNING! This app will charge you. Most people expect a free trial to be something you can cancel before you are charged, or else why risk doing a trial? This app gives you a “free trial” that charges you once anyway. They should be barred from calling their app a free trial. It will either charge you 39.99 or 300+ dollars depending which tier you chose. It states this in the fine print. Do not use this app, delete it immediately if you came here on the pretence it had a free trial. It does not have a free trial. It has a 39.99 one month subscription fee that you cannot get out of. If you chose the 300+ yearly fee? R.I.P. your wallet.

Not worth it. Honestly this app really dosent provide alot of anything. The language tutorials are poor and clunky. The best thing app about this are the videos, but you can just watch all of those on youtube for free. Unfortunately i decided to get a year subscription. Be careful cause they wont give you your money back. I got the one year subscription at 40% off and i feel like its still waaaaay over priced. Stay away! Just search for videos on youtube and save yourself some $$

Refund of protated credit for unused time.. Hi, I would like to know. In what time you guys refund the already charged subscription amount for the unused time , when the person has resubscribe for new plan.

Good but expensive. Love the app but too expensive :(

Not worthwhile. The app is buggy and the course does not have a clear structure or organized explanations. In the end, you are paying for a bunch of short audios and videos that you can watch for free on YouTube, nothing else. The app uses video lessons produced by other people on YouTube who post them for free. And some of the beginner's content in Chinese is not correct or what people really use to communicate in China. Not worth your money.

Good. My kid loves it,but why it keeps asking for internet connection after open video in Download? section

The best Chinese learning app for me. I love consuming media and being entertained while learning. This app is perfect for me because it lets me do both. The interactive dictionary lets me learn more and more words each time I’m learning something. It’s a great opportunity to boost your vocabulary.

Charged $385.39. Why was I charged $358.39 CAD for a free trial? I went to cancel the free trial today and found out that you had charged me for a one year subscription. Don’t download this application I can’t trust a company that defaults its most expensive options to its company during the free trials. I want my money back.

Experience. I just absolutely love this app because I had tried so many other courses, but FluentU is by the best online course that I have ever experienced. I love the way FluentU presents these courses as they were teaching us like kindergarten students because for those of us who are just starting to learn Russian it makes it so much easier for us to learn by the way you present your courses as though we were kindergarteners because we start from the basics and I love how you explain each lesson. Thank you FluentU, I shall remain your loyal customer and student because I am learning Russian so that I could communicate with my Slavic girlfriend. Sincerely King

Free. I am unable to cancel because the settings page is always under maintenance. It is a scam. They keep warning me that my free trial is almost over but there’s no way for me to cancel. I’m going to have to ask my cc to reimburse me. Don’t sign up.

Very good but not excellent. I have tried French one. The translation to English was not correct(sometimes). Secondly, the prononciation in dialogue section, does not belong to a human, it is a machine! Finally the videos comes from youtube, it takes few seconds to upload, I mean you can’t watch it immediately. But honestly these points are not very important, you can ignore all of them and enjoy this application. I have tried more than 10 application since last five years to improve my skills in English snd French. This one is one of the most effective applications. The idea is creative and powerful. The videos really helps you to improve your skills in listening. They use Pimsleur method to repeat what you learn and this is a strength point. I have tried 2weeks free trial and I am eager to renew my subscription from tomorrow. In my opinion, this app is really professional and creative. If I were the owner, I would focus to solve those three issues that I have mentioned above.

Charge yearly. How can i refund my yearly subscription?

Sounds great, but why the upfront charge?!. I saw this on a YouTube ad and thought, wow! This is exactly what I’ve been looking for! I downloaded it, went to set up an account, and then I’m told I need to give them my credit card and I’m going to be charged $300 in two weeks? Yeah, no thanks guys! You’ve got to let me roam for free and explore the app first. After reading other reviews and seeing that people have a tough time getting their subscription cancelled...yeah, no thanks! Too bad. Great idea, very poorly executed on the user side. If you changed it I would re download!

Charged for wrong subscription. I only wanted to do it by month but it charged me for a whole year I would like a refund plz

Don’t waste your time. Save your time. Use another app

Love but.... I love the app but I don’t have $300+ for it! My phone isn’t showing this app as an active subscription so I can’t cancel... I don’t want to get charged...

helppppp pleaseee. I paid for the subscription and I want to cancel it but I was Im impatience so I made an account with a bunch of random letters as the email and then proceeded to logout by accident while trying to cancel my subscription so can you guys not charge me

Expensive, and not that great. The ad makes it sound amazing, but was disappointed with the experience after only a few minutes of use.

No cool - do not use this app. I installed the app and they automatically charged my credit card $300 without my knowledge. I just wanted to try it out for 2 week. App shouldn’t automatically bill a consumer! Hopefully I won’t get charged

Voices are mostly auto-generated. Illogical content.. The voices are computer generated. You can’t learn to speak a language from bad siri voices. I regret this purchase. Also, No logical format to lessons for most languages.

Good!. It is a very encouraging program and you can set your own pace. I'm already thinking in a little bit of Japanese!

Connection error and problems to unsubscribe from the free trial. The app is not working properly. It says there is a connection error and I can’t access the Vocabulary and Dialogue tabs. Also, it doesn’t show the subtitles under the videos. I tried to unsubscribe from the free trial but the app doesn’t allow me to do it. Jakub

GREAT FOR LEARNING SPANISH. I started using it as the free trial and I already see progress in my Spanish vocabulary there’s so many videos and lessons to learn and chose from I really love it! I’m considering to buy the monthly plan but 40 dollars a month is a lot. I’d love to invest in this app because I do believe it will teach me Spanish but maybe lowering the price to 20 a month would help a lot of people to learn a language

Way too expensive. Duolingo is better

This app is garbage. When you download the app. Right away you need to pay. Google translate is way more better then this stupid app 👎

Only worth it as a beginner. Good for beginners - lots of content for beginner stuff. For advanced, videos are random at best. You’d be far better off to use YouTube with subtitles on.

Good app for French. As someone learning French in school, I wish they’d taught it this way more. It helps you learn colloquial phrases through videos rather than the traditional learners way which leaves you sounding like a textbook. Love that. I just wish they had more advanced flash cards, the intermediate and advanced are just slightly harder beginner words

Confusing. I don’t understand how to use it.

Charged Immediately for free trial. Like other reviewers, I was charged immediately for a free trial. I understand sometimes people struggle to cancel their subscriptions before the paid version renews.. but I was simply charged before my free trial period even started. I have contacted support for help and will update this review if help is received.

Super. Je l'aime ❤️

Great program for learning. Use this every day. Learning system motivates you to keep at it, I have used other apps. Have stuck with this one.

Amazing. This app is not boring and it's very useful. I wish it was free Just be careful of the automatic charge after the free trial

This is the best learning tool I’ve seen for French!. I am at the intermediate level in French. I’ve used Rosetta Stone as well as Duolingo. It’s hard to stick with either of them because they just get boring after a while. I am pretty determined to learn conversational French, and I stumbled upon FluentU when I googled the differences between “quand” and “lorsque” - which resulted in a great document from FluentU. So I signed up for the two week trial. I’m enjoying the video method SO much! I get to hear way more French the way that regular folks speak it. AND I get these useful emails with extra notes on grammar, recommended movies and popular expressions. I am blown away by how fun this is! I’ve already recommended it to several friends and family members Well done! Maureen

Fluent U is bad. Your app is trash, Duolingo’s better.

Refund. I was charged for a subscription. How do I get a refund?

You have to pay so much just to learn a language. This app is garbage the book in the app is way better they tricked us with getting the app free but paying so much money to learn one language and if u get the free trial it's no use cause you can't learn a language that fast and no one would pay that much

Disappointed. Sadly they want you to pay upfront, for the “free trail”. I tried to sign up for the free trail and it kept circling around to my banking information or iTunes account balance, then they said your iTunes balance only has $3, please add more funds. I didn’t, but I’m still worried they will charge me even though I deleted the app right away.

Got charged full month for a free trial. Please kindly refund.

No landscape mode - so basically useless. Three upgrades in 3 weeks and you’re still missing the most needed upgrade - landscape mode in ipad OS. It’s been 3 years now. You clearly have your priorities wrong. Please upgrade properly and I’ll revise my review. Until then it’s useless to me so that means 1 star. Cheers.

Almost charged me money. This app asks for 300$ right away! Even tho it specifically says i can wait to the end of my 14 day free trail. Im not paying 300$ to learn a language!!

It’s fun!. I’m glad to have a way to enjoy learning French. The app is easy to use, well paced and entertaining.

Warning!. Signed up thinking that I could cancel my subscription if I didn’t end up using the app before the trial ended. The trial ended after two weeks, but I was not informed about it and instead automatically billed. By the time I realized, it was too pate and now I’ve payed over $300 for a years subscription that I won’t use. Really wish they would give a warning before they bill you for that much.

Fast and helpful support. An update to the app broke it for me, and they actually did something about that.

Garbage app. I am a paid user, and actually like the idea behind it. But the ios app never works. It always crashes and you need to close the app and start it again. Very frustrating. I won’t renew my subscription only because of the lack of technical support. They update the app every month but it only gets worse.

“2 week trial, don’t forget to cancel sub”. 2 weeks free then we bill you... how about you let me have two weeks and then ask me then if it’s ok, instead of hoping someone forgets to cancel their sub before the trial period. The moment I got asked about money I uninstalled. Tired of these apps saying it’s free till you get into it and want $300-$400. Just bad business

Crap at login. I really don’t enjoy apps that you cannot at least preview or get pass the log in to see what it’s like before committing to a payment. Also at the login it says select a language to learn but then continues for the email and password in the language. umm I don’t know this language so how am I meant to signup in the language. When I switched it to English again, they still had the password and some of the text written in Korean... it certainly did not give me hope for the app so I decided just to quit there and then.

Terrible. App is only in portrait view - doesn’t switch to landscape view. For an ipad with a keyboard, completely useless.

Stickier than coronavirus. Popping up all the time at my YouTube videos, so I downloaded only to give a bad review!!!! Don’t download and don’t use at all times folks!!!

Not impressed. Same issue as others. Cancelled, but still charged.

Horrible. This app has actually gotten dramatically worse over time. Developers don’t care about user experience. You will be prompted to give feedback on app after every lesson with only option of positive or negative no option to skip. The app is hilariously slow at times that don’t make sense. After every lesson you get to wait 10-20 seconds watching a colored globe bounce up and down while it summarizes your score from the finished lesson. What?

I’m digging this. I’m also using Babbel but I’m enjoying this app very much due to the many ways they help reinforce this new way of speaking, conjugating and listening. I love the use of recognizable cultural video clips. It makes the language relatable by putting it in a familiar setting.

Love it - but plus use some polish.... Love this app but it needs some polish: 1. The audio is very jumpy even if I downloaded as to my local device. In many of the exercises the spoken word does not match the individual word selection - for example when building “mir geht es gut” the individual words are spoken as “mir” “mir” “mir” “gut” - hoping to see an update soon - hate to pay for the year otherwise...

Courses are put together well. Small big, though. After going through an audio, sometimes, it doesn’t recognize that I’ve gone through it. I run through it a couple of time but then have to close and reopen the app, run it again and then it acknowledges I completed it and allows me to take the quiz

Works. It works and I do learn from this app. But it’s so irritating when u lose the streak after so many days of hard work. Get demotivating even though you have 200k points and can’t use it to get more of the streak back

I really want to love this app, but.... At first, I really liked this app, but I realized that it had some major flaws: 1) The videos are really short and contain a large number of commercials. I don’t want to learn french from jingles. 2) I have been a member for over 1 year, but there is little fresh material 3)There are no « collections » of videos, i.e., a series of connected videos like Yabla has. 4) The iPad apps is nothing but a big iPhone app that doesn’t even use landscape mode. This is inexcusable for an app for a subscription that costs so much. 5) In all modes you cannot maximum the video. Horrible waste of screen real estate. I won’t be renewing again (i forgot to cancel my subscription last year so I automatically got sucked into a whole new year and was not able to cancel it even on the next day).

2week trial. I would consider this app if I could actually get a 2 week trial with a choice rather than automatic decision to monthly payments. I’d like to know if it has the kinds of things that would be useful to me, but I can’t look without the threat of automatic payments if I forget to cancel. Bummer.

Why though?. Ok so I'm trying to learn a language for free, but wanted something new. Turns out, (even though they say its convenient) you have to pay to have fun. I now you gotta make money but a much easier way is making a membership or something. That way, you get more people playing and more people that would actually want to but membership or something. I would do this if i had money, but I dont. So it would be nice to have at least some languages for free. Also, I'm just a kid! I don't have a credit card so i cant even get 14 days free!

Forced to Choose Payment Option. I wanted to try this out, but in order to use it you are forced to choose a payment plan in order to use it free for 2 weeks… I would prefer to have the app let me use it for 2 weeks and then it lock up until I pay, than to have to worry about cancelling an upcoming payment. Please change this.

Hmm.... This app is a great resource! I’m still trying find more apps to learn Latin American. But the only thing is that this should teach more words. I don’t mean words in general. It is hard to explain but here is an example, I’m not sure if this is correct but this might make you understand what I mean. “To + the = ir in Spanish. More Spanish grammar, is what I mean I guess. But overall it is a great app and hope more propels continue to use this as it advances!

Amazing app!. Finally a new way to actually learn and remember the words. I typically don’t write reviews, but this app makes me want to. It is so worth it! Got it for the free trial, and stayed for good. Th only app I use now to peachy Spanish

Great too for learning vocabulary. This is an amazing learning tool. However occasionally there are bugs where the quiz question, audio and video are different. Also also downloading lessons for learning offline is pointless as the videos are not downloaded

Watch out—hard/impossible to cancel subscription!!!. Purchased a free trial to see if this app would help my relative learn English. I tried it but don’t thing it would work. Trying to cancel the subscription and they made it hard (actually no clear instructions how to do it, just a endless loop of “do it though Apple App subscriptions” which doesn’t exist). Still have no idea how to cancel.

Needs Dark Mode-FluentU refuses to address accessibility. I really enjoyed the variety of videos and the vocabulary learning. Unfortunately, due to developing severe light sensitivity Ive had to stop using it. I’ve requested a dark mode multiple times. It’s a very easy to solve disability accessibility issue that they refuse to address making it almost impossible for me to use. For this reason, I’m canceling my subscription.

Just Starting Out with FluentU. I’ve been studying Korean for quite awhile and while I do see progress it’s slow going! I’ve tried multiple apps, Programs, and books and so far this seems to be helping me more than any of them. I’m hopeful that I’ll see a lot more progress with this app!

Subscribed $30/month. I’m using it for French and several other apps in parallel. The text to speech is a poor substitute that you get with native speakers in other apps. If you learn from this alone you will speak incorrectly. My partner is native French and identifies multiple mistakes in pronunciation and usage. That being said, it does grind you through the learning, as long as you don’t depend on it exclusively. I will probably drop the subscription in favor of other products.

Great app!. Easy to stick to daily schedule. you can set up as short as one minute to study. The contents are really good and not boring. It also has a function to make flash cards. I’m on a14 day free trial but I will definitely continue my subscription.

iPad app is great!. After using the desktop, iPhone and iPad versions, the iPad app is great for learning on the go! I’m currently sitting in a public park, in beautiful weather, learning German with the very friendly user interface.

My new phone addiction is FluentU. Four years ago we made the bold decision to put our son in a full immersion Chinese school. Now I’ve decided to learn conversational chinese, just 5 minutes a day. I’m really enjoying it! I like the FluentU format. It’s fun and spurs me on.

An iPad app that doesn't support landscape mode. Are you guys kidding me? Completely unacceptable. You have competition and you're this lazy? You clearly state in your website that you have an iPad app! Is this the iPad app you're referring to? Edit: That was a calm & mature developer response, unlike my overly angry review. Re-rating it as 4 stars.

Entertaining. I love the interviews with the children and the ‘lie detector’ tests. Good variety of vocabulary as well. Fun, and a lot of information. Two minuses - 1) I can only see it in portrait on my iPad. Since I have a keyboard in landscape, it means I have to turn my head sideways to view it. 2) It doesn’t require me to speak French at all. Learning vocabulary is great, and having to use it would be even better.

Fantastic, if you put in the work. I’ve tried many, many language apps. Because FluentU bases their lessons off of video clips, it can take your studies to the next level. FluentU offers words and phrases in context in a way that other apps don’t. Short of a personal tutor or classroom setting, FluentU is the way to go. I’ve been using it for over a year now.

Beginner is great. They gave up on advanced. I thought this was a great app and it really helped me improve until I got to the advanced levels. The videos were repetitive and boring. It seems as if they never thought anyone would get that far. If you are C1/C2 this app is pretty useless.

Quick Fix. Support responded really quickly for bug fix. They get their 5 stars back. It is a bit expensive but language training is.

Great app, amazing customer service. Lessons are tailored to my progress and needs and the video clips really help. I had an issue with my subscription and customer service was easy fast and friendly. Repeat customer.

Perfect. Finished Rosetta Stone level 5 and all Pimsleur corses first. Have been looking for something fun and challenging ever since. So fun and easy to do on elliptical. Variety, songs, plenty of practice…Love it.

Funny episode. I have smiled several times with funny episode that health inspector said work for bribes and give 2 points back with recognized section 5 not need have hat unless in the kitchen.

Free trial with credit card only. Was not able to use the app as a credit card it required to begin the free trial. This outdated free trial experience was provided by apps in the hope that you would forget to unsubscribe and then end up being charged. If this app ever decides to allow for unrestricted free trials like many other language apps I would be happy to give it a whirl. Until then you get one star having the credit card requirement, and I will not try your app.

すごい. Been spending a lot of time studying Japanese with FluentU. The beginner lessons are great. Well worth doing alongside another program. Now I’m in the open waters of intermediate which more self-directed and a very different experience. We’ll see how that goes.

Unique but interface needs work. I love that fluentu uses modern media to teach, I especially find songs and storytelling to be effective in my language learning. The interface itself, the way one navigates through the different lessons, and the overall look and functionality of the GUI (i.e. the buttons, graphic design, layout, etc) is subpar. I use Duolingo as well, and their app is very well done. In any case, I keep coming back to FluentU for real, modern media-centered lessons.

FUN feeling. It is rare to find an online language program that is so fun that I can’t wait to use it every day. But FluentU fits that description. The music videos in particular make me feel as though I’m having fun at a party. It comes very close to a natural immersion experience. I love it.

Yikes. This app has a lot of potential. I love how it has videos and offers real life examples. But the app is glitchy and the forward/backward function won’t work. It also has an issue with getting stuck on a phrase and not showing the proper translations during the freeze. Great idea of an app but didn’t work for me personally!

Not for beginners. This app does not have a very good start to the ‘beginner’ level. I am trying to learn Korean, and this app didn’t even teach me the basic Korean alphabet. When the first quiz came around, I quickly realized how much I needed to teach myself before using this app. I just figured for the amount that you’re paying this app would actually teach you from the bottom up. I feel as though this app can be super overwhelming for beginners and turn them off quickly to learning a new language which is sad.

One of the best. This is one of the best Spanish courses I have taken, including what I’ve learned in college. It steadily takes you through speaking words that go together smoothly and then make sure you’re able to spell the words they’re teaching. It’s a great program.

Good but.... This app is not helpful for beginners. After you’ve listened and played the “Audio”, the quiz questions suggest that you should be memorizing the pronunciation, spelling and characters recognition (if Russian, Chinese, Japanese, etc)... with is actually ridiculous from the way it’s presented. Too much to throw on beginners out of the gate.

Excellent Customer Service. I had an issue with billing (all my fault). The team was super quick to respond and resolve everything quickly. Special thank you to Lhea

Subscription cancellation. I subscribed to the two week free trial, but the subscription did not show up in my Appstore Subscriptions so I was unable to cancel it. I was just charged $96 for an app I barely ever used. Update: I reached out and FluentU refunded me and cancelled my subscription. I don’t know what the problem is with Appstore subscriptions but I’m thankful for the great customer service.

Can’t use app without payment details. They force you to subscribe to a monthly subscription to even TRY the app in hopes you’ll forget the free trial and get charged $30 per month. The fact that they don’t let you try the app before entering payment information is a red flag, they are betting on that you’ll forget the trial and at least get a month or two charge out of you which is shady, don’t waste your time, there are other apps out there

Love this app. I usually don’t leave reviews, but I just want to say that this app is a great way to build vocabulary. Use this along with the videos and also try to listen to your target language as possible while not using the app; the dots will start connecting. This app has helped me on my way to fluency in Japanese. FluentUありがとうございます😊!

Looks like a good supplement but.... Not sure what was wrong with my app and/or device but none of the videos would play/had really long load times. The flash cards worked but I didn’t really download this app for those. It looks like it would be a good tool for people who started out with some basic grammar and vocabulary from another program. Rosetta Stone is still my go-to for now and it comes free through a lot of libraries.

Very unhappy. I used the apps a couple of time such a long time ago I don’t even remember when. I did not like it personally so remove it from my phone. I noticed a charge a few days ago from an unrecognized name, by looking online found it was this app. It is not listed as charged on my Apple Store. They charged me almost $150 when the app is less than $100. There is no way for me to cancel nor contact them. It is ridiculous

Videos did not play and n hard to manage. I downloaded the app for Spanish and after 20 minutes of attempting the first less I gave up. The video never loaded or played. I powered off my iPad and restarted, nothing worked. I tried to cancel the subscription within the app and nothing but a blank screen came up. Had to go to the Fluent U web page, login and get instructions to cancel the app through the iPad settings. If you want a lesson in frustration this app is for you. Otherwise dont bother

Don’t mind the 1-star reviews...this app is great!!. This app has been an absolutely invaluable tool in aiding my Japanese language studies and has allowed me to improve at a much faster rate than I would’ve without it. The people who are complaining that it isn’t free are just cheapskates

Great. No lie this app is fun I don’t even like writing reviews for apps but this one I can’t deny it’s work the dollar if u really what to advance in another language.

App Crashes - can't find customer service. Problem was solved same day. Working good again. My app crashes on startup. I searched several places to contact them for support but cannot find a place to get help. So I am resorted to complaining here.

No Speaking Practice. I’ve created my school account and invited my students. As I searched for assignments to give them I can select audio, video (which is a lot of yt), and Flashcards. After listening, speaking comes next in language production but there are no oral language assignments. Even Duolingo has speaking portions that the kids record. When will oral language assignments be added?

Great but pricey!. I have tried the free trial and have fallen in love with this app. After many attempts at finding a language learning application, this has been the very best. I truly did learn a lot more! The only downside is the price. I would love to purchase the year subscription if the price were lowered.

Will rip you off for $31. Beware!! The instructions they give you for ‘unsubscribing’ from your iPhone WILL NOT WORK and you will be charged even if you delete the app. I had to call iTunes directly to get it removed and reported the app as possibly fraudulent!! Once iTunes is called it is fairly easy to do with the proper instructions. I wonder how many others have been screwed out of $31 over this racket?

I only tried once and deleted it but after a year. later, i just found out the 1-year subscription has been made. Of course apple sent me a receipt that i rarely check. Not even one month but whole year? It’s freaking $240!!!! Thanks to myself I wanted to cancel my netflix so that I found out this one. Plz do something about this. I’ve lost my 240 dollar so far.
