Stratus Insight EFB App Description & Overview

What is stratus insight efb app? Stratus Insight is a full electronic flight bag (EFB) suite for pilots that includes AHRS with synthetic vision, TAWS, VFR sectional maps, IFR low/high charts, and geo-referenced approach plates.

More than an EFB, Stratus Insight also offers:

Radio Transcription & Playback
Stratus Insight boasts a custom-built speech recognition system inside the app. When paired with a Stratus Audio Cable, the ATC Radio Transcription feature works similar to visual voicemail. ATC communications are converted into text, providing a helpful visual assist for referencing previous audio clips. This enables pilots to receive a clearance, ATIS, or other important ATC communications without needing to write them down

Vertical Weather Profile
The Vertical Weather Profile previews your route in the vertical slice from departure to destination, up to eight days out, so you can see the conditions you’ll encounter based on your departure time, aircraft speed, and each intermediate airport.

Smart Flight Plan
If a TFR or changes in weather force you to take an alternate route, the Smart Flight Plan tool considers things like fuel stops and day/night currency.

Radar Forecast
Radar Forecast provides long-term weather radar simulations up to three days out, and you can fast forward your weather radar in one-hour increments.

Stratus Audio Cable
The Stratus Audio Cable (available to purchase for $49.99 from the Appareo web store) is needed to enable the radio transcription and playback feature.

Seamless Integration with Stratus
The app supports all generations of Stratus receivers, and the user experience is seamless. Stratus receivers provide WAAS GPS, AHRS, in-flight weather, and ADS-B traffic.

Apple Watch
Uses HealthKit to detect hypoxia-like symptoms for pilot health monitoring including nearby airport weather watch faces and weather radar on watch.

Do not think twice!. This is a fabulous app, full of resources and information. Very comprehensive and user friendly. If you are thinking twice, think no more. Download and start using it. You will not regret. Amazing development!

Best present flight weather available. The pre-flight weather information available is second to none. It's a true life saver and I can't see how anyone could function without it.

Promising application. Good application with even better potential

Watch out Foreflight!. I used to subscribe to Foreflight and in the beginning they were clearly innovative. However, over the years that innovation has seemed to stagnate and the value added diminish. In using Aerovie I've been more than impressed with the feature set. One of the most valuable capabilities has been the graphical weather depiction that the software provides. This with the price point provides what I believe an equal if not greater value option than Foreflight.

Status Insight great for VFR flights. The main reason I purchased the one month subscription of $9.95 (1 year/$100) was to try the ATC transcription service. Mainly to help with clearance delivery read backs and general read back ATC instructions. You do need the special wire adapter that you use with your existing headset for it to work. The EFB is an added bonus to the transcription service. Transcription service: The verbal to written transcription service is overall pretty good, it does a very good job with numbers, which is probably the most important. It does have some difficulty with some terms. Accuracy is about 80%-90% Overall. It does do a good job of organizing the verbal transmissions, so if the text transcription does not make sense, you can always listen again to the original verbal message. It is like having a copilot next to you, where u can turn to him/her and ask “what did ATC say?” It is also nice to be able to multi task in the cockpit, when there is a long 2-3 minute ATIS that talks about every NOTAM over the last 6 months, and you miss the most important part, the winds and barometric pressure, active runway and what letter designation is current (e.g. bravo) , it is nice not having to repeat and listen to it. The strongest part of the EFB is actually the weather planning aspect of the Stratus Insight program. It can almost be a stand alone program by itself, it is overall all a pretty good weather planning tool. Using the program for VFR flying and weather planning, is where the program is at its strongest. The AHRS is also very good, especially when used with the Stratus, which would be expected. The program is a little weak in my opinion for IFR flying, as compared to ForeFlight, which is much more polished, but more expensive. For example, It is difficult to choose an IFR plate, while flying, if you have not loaded the plates already. Also the wind data is not incorporated with the active runway (no active head wind and cross wind data based on current conditions) In conclusion, I think when used with ForeFlight ( or Garmin) it is a good adjunct program, especially for IFR flights. By using the transcription service, I am much more likely to file an IFR flight plan, mainly by helping me read back my clearance delivery without getting flustered during the read back. I use the middle cost FF plan, $199 per year. I do not think the $299 FF plan is worth the extra ($100) cost, compared to what you get. But I do think, putting the extra $100 per year toward the Stratus Insight EFB makes more sense, especially with the forward looking weather planning data. If you fly VFR, I think Stratus Insight is worth it as a stand alone EFB, it has everything you need, and the weather part of the program is perfect for helping plan a more safe VFR only flight. There is also a flight log book, that keeps track of currency and airplane check lists also as part of the Stratus Insights EFB program. If you do not want to spend the money on a Complete EFB like ForeFlight or Garmin, it is worth is as an inexpensive option, you can download the program and play around with it to get a feel of the program, but you do not get complete access to the whole program unless you sign up for the free month.

Best Value. I’ve used every EFB out there. It is coded tightly, isn’t designed by committee and the dev is responsive to feature requests and bug fixes.

I am loving it. Tried this app a year ago and did not like it. I just downloaded the latest version and I am blown away by the improvements and features included(free and pro versions). I suggested a monthly subscription rate and they listened. I am switching from ForeFlight to this app.

Wow, top flight planner in my book!. 1000 hour PIC here in a single engine plane who worked as a single pilot in the cockpit. While I’m not actively flying, I did run this app through its paces and all I can say is why is this planner NOT in the top grossing apps in the flight planning searches? This flight planner runs circles around foreflight when it comes to ease of use in the cockpit. Easy to read in varying lighting conditions, easy to amend IFR flight plans. Weather briefings and overview of flight planning) is the best I’ve seen (far better than foreflight and fltplango) I had foreflight basic subscription and you get far MORE features in this app (log book and geo referenced approach plates) in a simple one price subscription app AT A MUCH CHEAPER YEARLY RATE. If I was an active pilot, you can bet this app would be on my yoke mount.

Excellent. A great app with all the functionality needed at a great price!

Weather is incredible, but.... ...I tried it for two months and 5 flights after I upgraded my Stratus from 2S to 3. Clearly, the integration of the two, both now owned by Appareo, had a LOOONNNGGGG way to go. All the flights were VFR, thankfully, as the instability of the program was woeful at best. It crashed continuously! The craziest one that caused me to turn it off for good was a VFR flight to a pancake fly in. I was watching all the targets on screen as I entered he pattern when the screen began replicating itself over and over just before it crashed again. Fortunately, I was focused outside the airplane, but this just proved I could not rely on it and cancelled the subscription. But, oh that weather! Cloud tops and bases visually for your route? Yowzaa! Just wish I could buy that separately.

Excellent EFB with great potential. Great value for the cost. One of the best and most intuitive user interfaces of the EFB apps currently available. Biggest downside to me is the awkwardness of moving Lat/long flight plan waypoints- dragging waypoint to another creates a new waypoint, then have to go back to select and delete the old one. Terrain profile is of limited value around mountainous routes, as it looks at a wide “width” that can’t be changed.

Intuitive. Very powerful and quite intuitive.

ePireps!. A great idea and APP for aircraft with WiFi. Easy to use. Issues are "Auto GPS" does not work using iPad/iPhone GPS nor does the "Auto Altitude" mode. These functions may require an external GPS however no information is published on this. The manual mode could be improved by utilizing an aviation chart for location and being able to type in manual altitude vs slider for better accuracy while in flight. Good over all APP! Thanks

Best free aviation app (by far.). I haven't had the chance to use this app to its full abilities (like filing flight plans, pireps, etc) but I'm astounded at how much information is readily available, and I'm extremely surprised that this app is free. The only reason I haven't given five stars is because the flight planning is a little difficult to use. Its easy to drag and drop waypoints, but it's a little clunky with regards to editing those waypoints. I can't figure out how to remove waypoints, the trash can button doesn't seem to work. If you guys make this easier I'll happily give five stars, you deserve it!

OK but needs improvement to compete w FF and GP. Overall very pleased with the product but needs some improvements. Been using for 2 weeks now and I have active FF and GP to compare to. Some comments : 1) The deal breaker — Synthetic vision screen severely lacks overlay options and is extremely glitchy. It’s hard to call this a feature when there is zero fluidness to the screen. Before you judge, I use apple mini 5 and I’ve also tried on Ipaad air - both have this major issue. 2) Needs graphical Leidos brief like FF does. Why is it that FF has full graphics like 800brief but no other product offers this? Something isn’t right with that. 3) Although you can add the approach plate, you don’t get option to add fixes to the flight plan - ie loading approaching. This is a must and needs attention to be competitive with FF/GP 4) Too many layers of menus. Menus at the top match FF (but why since imo this is the worst part of FF interface). On the lower screen there’s another menu. The lower one should be configurable, then completely delete the top one which is impossible to touch accurately on a bumpy flight. My preference is the menu method GP uses. Rich in color and highly visible in flight. 5) It would be nice to have Heading overlay arc on the plan view - the way aera796 does this (which I also own) would be amazing. No other iOS app does this and would be game changer for situational awareness. Btw the round compass rose approach is not a good solution as it clutters the screen. 6) Add HITS for full FP + loaded approach - There is no reason why any paying app should be without this feature. This coupled with approaches would be the best solution for 99% of pilots. I don’t like the auto glide slope as it does not match approach glide slope and can be very misleading. It should match the approach only when loaded. 7) Split screen similar to FF was the wrong decision. IMO the method GP uses is the best, offering small button to configure the secondary window that we want to activate. No one else comes close. 8)Vertical planning mode w weather is a valuable tool especially for icing and cloud layers.

Ruined new version. I’ve been using this app for about 3 years and it’s been great. Right before EAA AirVenture 2023 they put out a terrible new release making it impossible to file a flight plan. You enter in data to the flight plan manager and it doesn’t update the map. Impossible to file a flight plan so make to calling flight service. Anyway, don’t buy this, it’s going down hill. And it’s not safe.

I wish I could change the units of measurement.. I really like the features in this app. I’m still trying to get used to the interface. My complaint is not being able to change the units of measurement. I’d like to use mph over knots since that is how my AI reads and to stay consistent with that I’d like to be able to view SM vs KM. Maybe in a future release?

Scam. Beware If you download this app, they will charge you for an ongoing subscription without you realizing it. There’s no way to cancel this automatic renewal! A real scam! Don’t dare download the “free” trial!

Great App. Nice feature set and generally intuitive process to use. Support is timely and great. It’s unclear to me why this app does not get more notice in the aviation press; anyone who gives this app some time will be impressed.

Was great. I'd give it five stars, however, the app keeps closing on me whenever I try to view a route from a zoomed out view. Seems to be a relatively recent issue too, possible bug that can hopefully be fixed with an update. Also, weather illustrations could be better. Looking at a prog chart to get an idea for upcoming weather is like looking at a pixelated outdated chart, same with icing illustration on the overlay menu. It's competitive with foreflight to an extent. One great feature that could make Aerovie really stand out is incorporating the option to select "ATC Preferred routes" when it comes to IFR flying much like foreflight does, working on weather overlay graphics/visuals, and possibly incorporating the ability to draw text on the plates or charts as reminders, outlining taxi routes on an airport diagram, or circling important portions of an approach/DP plate. EDIT: Looks like there was an update available and I did not notice it until after sending this - I'll give it five stars due to the fact that the developer seems to have caught this bug relatively quick! For what it's worth, the app is great, just my .02 on what I think could be improved upon. Merely constructive criticism, nothing more :)

Excellent App. From time to time there might be a small glitch BUT if the developer hasn't already noticed it all you have to do is send him an email and he gets on it as fast as possible. Very user friendly and great customer support make this app the one for privates to pro's. If there is something you need answered about Aerovie just ask and the response time is usually pretty quick. Excellent app indeed Clint M.

No thanks. Not paying $9.99 per month

Some nice features but clunky interface. The vertical weather profile is it's best feature. But pinching does not work as expected, at one point hanging during 1.3X resize. I like that it starts queuing up approach charts when airports are added to your flightplan. But trying to create a flightplan was frustrating experience: The map kept resetting me centered on current location. Im trying to rubber the flight path and keep getting thrown back. Could not find a way to query individual airspace, it just gives me a long list of every one on the chart. Be nice to get a vertical profile of those as well. Could not add airways. I personally like text and cascading menus, the symbolic buttons doesn't work for me. And I watch a video, it shows buttons on the bottom, I never could figure out how to get to that screen.

Great app!!. The Only thing I would recommend to the developers is a different way to show a Wx brief, and the way ti file a flight plan

Thoroughly Impressed!!!. As a commercial pilot I have used Foreflight and Garmin's app. Compared to this app those two aren't even on the same level...and I have only been playing with it for 20 minutes on the free trial. I can't really explain what this app can do but it seems like it can do everything, gives you an unbelievable amount of info at your finger tips, and is packaged in a very easy and aesthetically pleasing user interface. Because it can look at your weather 8 days in advance and keep an eye on it for you, it automatically has my vote! Now I can't wait to download this on my iPad, which I think it will make it even better.

Getting worse instead of better. Great idea to be able to submit PIREPS electronically, but terrible execution. The interface is becoming very convoluted. Yesterday it said no GPS data when Foreflight and Garmin Pilot were happily plotting my course using the internal GPS. The flight planning function is difficult to use and much worse than either of the above. They should go back to being a simple PIREP program. Finally, it's really annoying that the free program won't store your N number and name, making you type it in each time.

Outstanding for a CFI/CFII/MEI/Professional Pilot. As a 1200+ hr CFI/MEI/CFII I highly recommend this to my students as I think it’s phenomenal. I’d used foreflight for a long time (mostly because it’s popular) and it’s what my employer wanted us to use... Then flight plan go. But aerovie is on a whole other level and is amazing as a personal tool and as a teaching tool. Awesome weather info, easy to use, reliable interface in the cockpit, ability to show multiple METAR qualities on the map for airports (which foreflight CAN NOT do!), tons of advanced layers you can load on the map for weather - for teaching, research, or getting a more in-depth understanding of the atmosphere you’re going to face... These really help provide a more in-depth look at the weather as well as your flight plan. All for a very affordable price I think. One thing I wish were changed however... when clicking on AIRMETs (Zulu tango Sierra etc) it shows the applicable altitude but I still want to see the RAW ORIGINAL AIRMET information in the little white box. The original airmet text information. Also when looking at the complete standard briefing.... the way the winds/temperatures aloft text is presented it kind of runs together and is hard to read? Is there any way to fix this? I’m running a 12.9 inch iPad Pro (on the ground only!) and it’s still hard to see/decipher sometimes.

Can’t rely on. I have tried to use on IPad Pro, and it crashed, locked screen and even after rebooting and restarting Insight, only thing that comes up is same locked screen. I have cancelled subscription.

No support for Stratux. It used to support Stratux, now it does not!!!

Flight plan and landscape. Have been using for couple years, nice app. It fails to open flight plans and lack of landscape orientation for iPhone are my two issues.

Favorites lacking, storage hog. I’ve tried quite a few flight apps, most called EFBs despite the fact that most are far from an “EFB”. I like this one but it is a compromise because it lacks the ability to edit the favorites list or a method to save for a long term, a plan that one uses frequently. It is also not possible to edit a temporarily saved “favorite”, you have to name it something else. The favorites list as is, has little to no value to me. More than 20 gig, yes, more than 20 gig of storage, how can that be? Another problem I encountered is that after creating an IFR flight plan, if you try to edit airways after the fact, it draws airway lines all over the place which the only way to fix is to start over. I found myself going back to skyvector to create and file my flight plans because I know they will be correct that way. Documentation is really poor, and that is a problem in itself. I really like the price as it is reasonable, but improvements need to be made. I’m going to continue using this app as I watch for these changes. Hopefully I can edit this review as changes are made. I uninstalled this app because it is not working for me, before the trial ended, yet I was still charge the annual fee. I would like refund.

Will make Pireps easier and more frequent. Great app for simply filling Pireps using a phone and text system. Well designed to easily submit a report without having to remember all the arcane FAA syntax. Hope it doesn't become bloated by adding too many features. Keep it simple and focussed on Pireps.

It’s a joke! Don’t waste your time.. There is no such thing “a 30 day trial “. It would not even let you look at it without subscribing.

Excellent features!. I really like this application. It has some excellent features not found in ForeFlight. My favorite is the vertical profile view that shows you clouds, precipitation, icing, PIREPs in an easy to understand cross-sectional view. Also, commonly needed information is quick to access and there are advanced features such as automated voice briefings and terrain awareness. Also, you have the availability of Skew-t diagrams anywhere.

Excellent flight app!. Full function flight bag app with some great weather planning resources.

No Free Trial. Tried to use this funky app. Downloaded for a free trial. As I entered a flight plan, I was prompted that my free trial ended and I couldn’t use any features. It’s a shame I couldn’t try this app as I heard good reviews. Stick to Foreflight.

Do not download !!!. ADSB does not work with Garmin GDL and I was charged $9.95 less than a week after downloading. Was not 30-day trial period.

Nearly perfect and getting better all the time. I've used Foreflight and Garmin Pilot, both great apps for pilots, but neither contain the expansive integrated weather reports and forecasting that Aerovie does. There have been continual updates to both weather and flight planning. The latest includes an alternate airport planning tool. Job well done!

Unique Features. Aerovie has unique weather planning features for an EFB, which go above and beyond competitors.

Ex 737 driver. Would be nice for them to tell you how it cost before you download

Doesn’t work well, especially for the price. The Apple Watch part of this app just flat doesn’t work, trying to view radar crashes it, it needs the iPhone and isn’t remotely stand alone, NRST plus Windy does everything this tries to do, better and a fraction of the price On the iPhone, it’s just clunky and for the price point its too close to foreflight prices, if I want to save money fltplango is free and better

AerovieReports is Rockin. Have you been disappointed in "weak" aviation apps before? Frustrated by wanting a feature and it isn't there? While not perfect yet, Aerovie is working hard to bring you the features you desire and some you didn't know you wanted yet. The 2D atmosphere depiction of clouds, precipitation, ice and more make this app more than worth it's price. They are also very responsive to suggestions/comments. What are you waiting for? Give the free trial a run and see if you don't agree👍.

Every pilot can benefit from using this app. This app does so much, and is great at all of it. Submitting a pirep is just the beginning. The interface is great and the data sources are complete and fresh. Love that it works on iPad and iPhone in very similar ways.

Has potential, but is WAY to glitchy to be used in flight. After using ForeFlight for 3 years, I decided to try some different EFBs. I like how simple this app is, but even in the 15 minutes getting oriented with the app, I noticed that it is very glitchy. There were several times where I could not get charts or takeoff minimums to close using the ‘X’ (close button). Also, I don’t feel like the interface is too polished. It felt a little clunky to use. Given the bugs I came across so far, I would hesitate to attempt to use it during an actual flight. Has potential though.

Not actually free. You need to pay for a subscription to actually use the app

Best App for Weather!. I love Aerovie. It costs less than half of ForeFlight and does almost just as much, and when it comes to weather, it does significantly more. The vertical profile tool is very beneficial for a lower time pilot like myself, as it helps me see and dissect possible en route weather in an easy, but thorough manner. More pilots need to be flying with Aerovie!

One of my Go to apps as a CFI. This App is Fantastic. I use it every time I plan a trip. It helps me make quick decisions on route, altitude, and weather. What a fantastic time saver and safety tool. Thanks guys, keep it up.

One month free trial. I am just playing with this app for first time. There is a free one month trial. looks good so far

Very impressed!!!. Here is my story.... I’m an airline guy just looking for some extra info, specifically weather, to supplement what I’m already using. That’s it. So I gave this app a try. Just as featured as the other apps available. Obviously a different interface. You may like or may not. Paid for the monthly plan and figured I’d give it a month... To my surprise, it has impressive features especially in regard to weather. (You can read up on them). Again, some of these are contained in other apps available. So why the five star review? What knocked me out of my socks is that I have contacted support 3 times in the past few days. Bryan responded to each question within an hour!!! What! Where can you get that kind of support!!! I wouldn’t expect this superb support nor do I deserve it. Thank you. Anyway, I’m sure this product will just keep getting better if it’s supported!

So much potential!!!. I have been using this app now for few weeks. Although i believe it needs a little user interface refinements, it is by far the best EFB for weather planning out there. The weather profile is amazing and allows you to have a great sense of what is going to be forecasted ahead of time. As with all apps, this is going to improve a lot and I am looking forward to the next versions.

Still no Canadian charts. It was hoping for an alternative for ForeFlight or FltPlan Go but without Canadian charts I guess I have to keep waiting.

Don’t purchase. Avoid Avoid Avoid. I will updated if anything changes, but I downloaded this app, then during the first day of the 30-day trial learned that it does not work in Canada where I need it to work. I was immediately charged for the app. I requested a refund but it was denied, then after contacting the credit card company I was issued a credit memo but Apple. Then, after I alerted the credit card company that a refund had been provided, the app was mysteriously reinstated and I was changed again by Apple (or the app developer). Stay away from this app! If anything positive comes of this I will update accordingly.

President. Used it several times from the air for PIREPS. Impressed signal on phone transmitted report in the air. PIREPS showed up!

Awesome!. Finally! I've been waiting for an app that allows me to file a pirep without having to call LM.

Great Aviation App. Works well and weather and routing information easy to get and well presented. Excellent tech support. User friendly.

Awesome app!. App works great, submits PIREPs directly into the system.

Very impressive foreflight like. I'm using a trial sub on this app and find it very impressive so far. Seems very complete like foreflight which is my go to app.

Subscription problems. The app isn't bad. I liked the terrain clearance feature which gives a graphical depiction of weather and wind. My problem was that I kept getting charged monthly for subscription renewal and I couldn't stop it. Had to contact Apple to get them to shut down subscription. I really didn't like the app as much as Foreflight or Garmin Pilot.

Awesome App. This is hands down the best flight/ weather planning tool available.

Crashes. Just installed it on my Ipad Mini. I open it, it crashes. I open it, it crashes. Oh well

Long way to go yet. It’s written as a hybrid app with no real thought to design or user experience. It feels like a bad Android app. This isn’t something I would use in the simulator let alone as an efb. I might use the weather for flight planning purposes if it was separated, but there are better apps out there for that as well.

Kind of meh. Support for Hawaii is abysmal. There’s no option to load the high resolution IFR sectional. Victor airways in Hawaii do not work — if you plug one in then your flight path jumps thousands of miles to the continental US and back. Oceanic tracks (R464 etc) are not recognized at all. Aside from the Hawaii specific issues, it is not possible to shortcut direct to a fix during an arrival or departure route. The app also seemingly hasn’t changed at all since its release as Aerovie years ago. Abandonware? Update 8/2023: still pretty useless for Hawaii. No way to tell it to use the local V20 instead of the one in Texas 🤦

Great app. This app has great potential to compete with Foreflight in the future. If only synthetic vision was available and the layout was a little better. This app could be up there with: Foreflight SkyDemond FlyingQ Jeppessen WingX

Excellent. Aerovie is the best, most cost effective and user friendly flight app. I cannot stress how useful and intuitive it is. I fly in the US and abroad and even in South America the information is accurate. I only wish you could save and label personal waypoints as this would be very useful down south.Wholly recommend it!

Fantastic. Amazing app, amazing customer support

Best bang for the buck. Aerovie is a great app for the money. Bryan listens to feedback and is constantly updating the app to make it better. Be on the look out for this app to rise to the top in the Aviation market

Love the app. I am pursuing a career in aviation and I find this app easy to use and helpful.

Great App!. This app is incredible! Has great features, helps me plan my flight to avoid weather issues and is so easy to use! I recommend it to every pilot.

Aerovie Reports is great!. Love using this tool to submit PIREPs!

Freezes up and quirky. Don't waste money.. The route vertical weather profile is the best part about this app...if you can get to it. The rest is garbage. Slow and hangs up a lot. Database downloads are quirky. The longer the planned route, the worse it seems to be. Good idea but needs a lot of work. Can't believe they can charge money for this.

Fantastic flight tool!. Awesome flight planning tool that has the best weather tools on the market. A must have for IFR pilots. A far better value than Foreflight. Works great on flight simulator too.

About time!. Finally a non cumbersome way to report!!! Excellent app.

Happy Flying Season everyone! A quick update before we get into some fun, new summer features. - Misc bug fixes around flight plans and performance data - Added altitude picker for flight plan items. Good if you want to assign altitudes to individual waypoints outside of procedures. - Added badge to notify you can reach an altitude in time before descent. You'll find this in the altitude picker view for your flight plan. - Added legends to our weather overlays. Now you can see what the various colors represent. - Fix for notepad lag when using Apple Pencil. Or your finger for that matter. - Visual cleanup in the vertical weather profile view.
