◆Words already memorized are progressively removed from the card deck, so users can concentrate on just the words that challenge them, making for a more efficient approach to learning.

Study methods and functions
◇ “MyDeck” allows users to view the cards over and over, so they can take their time learning.
・The words can be studied by working from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.
・Learners can listen to natural pronunciations by native speakers of Japanese.
・Fun illustrations help users to better retain the words studied.
・Each card also includes an example sentence with an English translation and a recording of its pronunciation.

◇ “Check” helps learners to track their mastery.
・Users check their understanding of the vocabulary studied and sort the words into those mastered and those not yet retained.
・Retention can be checked by going from English to Japanese, or vice-versa.
・The cards of words already mastered are taken out of the set, leaving behind just those that still need to be worked on.

◇ “List” displays a list of all words covered by the app so that users can see their progress and review the vocabulary.
・Checkmarks are automatically placed next to words that have been mastered.
・The word cards can be displayed from the list entries, enabling quick review.

New Update Broke App. Used to work well but new update stopped English words from showing at all.

Great Compliment to the Text Book. I'm using a combo of textfugu, Genki and Children's books to learn the Japanese language. This app is extremely useful to those using the Genki text and well worth the cost. I imagine it would be of limited to use if you're not using the text though. Also, I wish it included all the vocab for each chapter and so ill subtract a star for that.

Well done app!. If you're learning Japanese with the Genki text, this app purchase should be a no-brainer. Well written app that I find much more usable than Anki. Still gives you the benefits of a SRS based approach, but with more features that make it easier to review as well as well spoken sentence and mnemonic examples. Enjoy this app along with the Kanji app. Both work fine on the ipad.

Sound. The sound applications does not work on any of the apps which does not help me when I'm trying to practice hearing it. I really only bought the flash cards so I could practice hearing it because my CD that came with my book was ruined while being shipped. Uninstalling it didn't make the sound work! Really unsatisfied.

Great Flash cards. Great flash cards if you are using the GENKI text book. I haven’t had any issue with the sound muting that wasn’t resolved by flipping the silent switch back and forth.

Awesome sample sentences. It's great because not only each term has picture and pronunciation, it also comes with a sample sentence with audio. Would be nice to be able to tap on words and have the corresponding card open!

Audio doesn't work. The whole reason I bought this app instead of using Anki decks was for the audio. Looking at the reviews, it seems that this has been an issue for over a year and that the developer probably just doesn't care enough to fix it. Save your money and use another SRS system.

Good review for vocabulary quizzes. The check and shuffle features make it very nice as a flash card type review. It needs a hiragana and katakana chart for quick reference. Also wish there was a way to hide the Kanji (until after I’m comfortable with the words’ spelling).

Very helpful!. I use the GENKI books in school and I find this app to be so helpful. I’m surprised it’s not more reviewed. GENKI should advertise more that they have this app. It has every chapters vocab and their is also a kanji and conjugation app which are also great.

Expensive for the Content. For the price, they could have added a Roma-ji option and more quizzes and exercises. There are some other apps for Japanese language learners like Anki and KanjiBox that you can make your own Genki vocabulary list with many options. It would be okay if this app were not this much expensive, but I think this Genki app does not worth for the price.

Lacking. If you have to pay, why doesn't this come with speech interaction. The menu feels a little too creative. The ages are good, but the system doesn't have a user friendly interface. Also where's the hiragana and katakana practice section. Sadly, I won't be recommending this to anyone. -- Needs a lot of improvement as a paid flash card app.

No sound. The volume doesn’t work, I can’t hear any of the words in the lessons. Not worth paying for.

Great app!. This is a good tool to use in addition to the textbook of course. The format is very similar to flash cards and I really like the option of either only doing vocabulary from one chapter or cumulatively. I would recommend getting this app and maybe the conjugations edition. The kanji one didn't do much for me so I would skip on that.

Definitely Helping!. This app is a great study tool when I'm working alone. It certainly beats carrying hundreds of flash cards everywhere! 2.0 has some subtle interface improvements. Edit: Thanks for the new randomization feature!

Ok. But the thing is you thought I would BUY your book AND THEN, PAY for your MULTIPLE APPS??? Nah. No way. Idk why they wouldn’t all be in one app. This app could instantly beam the language into my skull and I still wouldn’t give five stars. Okay, maybe I would cuz that would be cool, but YALL STILL GOT ME MESSED UP.

Great review app. This has been really helpful in my Japanese class!! Also you can shuffle the deck, they must have updated it

Great app!. I really love that this app has recordings for the words as well as example sentences with recordings. Seeing the word in context really helps you to remember it. I took off one star just because it lacks iPad support, it would be much easier to use this app on the iPad.

Not worth the price.. This app isn't "expensive", but it offers too little features. Yes I enjoy that it aligns with the Genki textbook, but I can get the same vocabulary words from Quizlet. Yes, they have Genki sets and honestly a better interface--for free! It works offline too. I love Quizlet's "learn" feature and little quizzes as well as the star system. On this Genki app, the features are not very user friendly and just basic. Just get Quizlet.

Pretty good. The interface is a bit clunky but the vocab selection is quite (being from the books).

Fine but missing spaced rep. First the person the rated down cause no iPad support is wrong. It's optimized for iPhone but works on iPad just like it says. It's just not scaled up for iPad (yet) That being said the program is great but missing 1 very key feature which is spaced repetition. Sadly all the audio files, sentences, pictures and vocab in the world won't make this a useable app till they add spaced repetition. Save yourself the Money for now and check back often for spaced repetition addition. Tip to developers: vocabulary apps are useless without spaced repetition option.

Almost great.... Should be able to customize your own deck with different words from each lesson. Also, it would've been nice if they've included all the vocab words from each chapter. At least all the ones that are included in the book's audio.

Sound issues. Update: I followed the instructions of another review and the sound now works. Close all apps, flip your side mute button off then on, restart phone, flip your side mute button off then on again, now the app should have sound. The sound doesn’t work. Sadly I cannot figure out a way to contact the app for assistance. I was excited to us this in pairing with the GENKI books

Okay.... The app helps with memorizing the dictionary form only. I would like there to be long form, short form, and te form conjugation to be able to see the way the words are used. Also, I would like to see a different form of test along with the current version. Maybe a multiple choice of the differing forms and how they would be utilized.

No instructions, tabs don’t activate. There are no instructions anywhere as to how this works. You tap around but nothing happens. Waste of money and I want a refund.

Disappointed. The app has no sound.

Could Be A Lot Better. It's nice having this to go along with the genki books and it's great having pronunciation on the cards too but the review system is worthless. There's no randomization while reviewing and it also lacks a spaced repetition system. Using the genki decks on Anki is much better, although that app costs 4 times as much and doesn't have audio playback like this.

Great app. This is a very useful Japanese learning app. I've tried a lot but this is by far the best. The example sentences also follow the grammar points pertains to the chapter. Do it's like you are double staying without even trying. It is worth the price Espevially since it includes all chapter for Genki 1 &2.

Initially the sound didn't play. So I followed these steps to fix it: (1) Close all applications. (2) Flick the mute switch (on the left side of the iPhone) off and on. (3) Restart the iPhone. (4) Flick the mute switch off and on. (5) Open GENKI Vocab Cards. This app has pros and cons. PROS * All the vocabulary of both GENKI I and GENKI II, 2nd edition. * Divided in lessons corresponding to the chapters of the books. * The cards are illustrated with the illustrations from the book. * Each card has an audio button that sounds the pronunciation of the word/phrase. * Easy to use user interface. CONS * There's no SRS, and even the 'shuffle mode' doesn't work. This makes this app moderately good for learning each lessons vocab for the first time, but not for long-term reviewing.

Good for vocab. Pro's: Very nice layout, good for studying the vocab of both books. Can see what words you need to study still in one place. Nice to have the same pictures as the drill card CD. Nice to have an example sentence. Cons: can't check a word as "known" during the card view phase to quickly get it out of view. No random word studying. (No shuffling the card order) Needs: someway to test conjugating at least the basic conjugations. And (a dream) have it be timed somehow like Anki does it. All in all: I was excited to see Genki finally make an app, hopefully they will continue and make one for grammar or listening. But this is a really good start. Definitely worth the price.

No Sound. No sounds. Completely useless

Add quizzes please. I love the idea of being able to learn more vocab without having to carry around my genki book. I am very disappointed that this app and their kanji app doesn't have a game or quiz section with multiply choice or something to see if you actually remember. A bit expensive for something missing games and quizzes.

Ripoff. Sound does not work. Save your money and do not buy.

Horrible app. Horrible app please refund

Add dictionary form to the verbs. It would be nice if the verbs were not in the te form so it would be easier to know the dictionary form, because in many cases you cant tell. But other than that the app is useful

Sound not working. Would rate this 4 if it not for the sound stopped working in os 13. Good visuals in this.

Sound works when silent mode is off. It’s a great app overall. However, I couldn’t hear any sound unless I turned off silent mode on iPhone.

Sound issues at first but. You have to switch your phone off of silent mode while using the app. It works perfectly if you do that

Great apps. These (3) genki apps are great. I use the genki and minna no nihongo apps to study and am getting great practice. 1. I would like to see speech/listening implementation cause that is incredibly important for learning the language. 2. Where can we comment on incorrect words? Most of the words seem fine but I noticed "major" is a different word from the genki textbook and all the words from the app follow the textbook precisely otherwise. So note if another word is diff. But correct? Or double check words and spelling for the app? Minor detail but a little dangerous for learning. Still highly recommend!!!!

Today's Update. Love the app, but after today's update I can no longer hear the pronunciation of the vocabulary. Please fix.

Great, but Needs Shuffle. This app is great for students using Genki. I used to input 50 vocabulary words per chapter to another flashcard application, but with this app, I save tons of time. The app is visually appealing and I like how the vocabulary is divided into sections so I can devote my attention to a handful of words as opposed to the whole list. However, this app lacks a shuffle feature to rearrange the cards in the deck. Random order eliminates expectations of words so you learn based solely on the translation and not because that one word was first in the list. If it had a shuffle feature, I would rate this app 5 stars.

Mostly useful. Just downloaded this and appreciate it so far. Fairly well designed, aligned to Genki textbooks, useful images, and I especially like the sample sentences that accompany the vocab. It always helps me to see exactly how a certain term is used, and it reinforces recently learned grammar points too. Overall I’d recommend. Two small annoyances for me that I hope the developers fix: during the Check review, the flashing “Remember?” image is completely unnecessary and very distracting. Please remove this! Also, when checking the correct answer, it displays for just a second (partly transparent), and then disappears. This answer should remain on-screen until tapped again so users can read at their own pace, especially if it’s long/includes kanji that needs more time to read.

Sound in inoperable. Unable to get support on a paying app This is not acceptable Would revise my review positively if problem is solved. The app is a good flash card system. Sound is a must.

Vocab isn’t complete. I knew I could get better apps to learn vocabulary for free, but I wanted to get this because I could follow along with my textbook. To my disappointment the vocabulary isn’t a complete selection of everything in the chapter! Such a waste

Fantastic!. This makes it to where I don't have to carry around a bunch of notecards, I can switch up if I'm reading in English or Japanese which is great to help make sure you recognize the words both ways, and you get to hear the pronunciations! I have the vocab and the conjugation apps and I love them both!

Outdated & crashes. You’re better off making your own flash cards. Pros: Lists vocab in alphabetical english and in Japanese. there are example sentences on the backside of the cards. Good for studying on the go. Most cards have pictures. You can hear the vocab and example sentences. Cons For $5 we should at least be getting an SRS system. The vocab “tests” are under “check my deck.” And it’s hardly a test. More so shuffled flash cards. The system is outdated and always crashes. They’ve just upgraded this app for Genki 3rd edition and they missed an opportunity to catch up to other apps and services like Quizlet, Wanikani, and Bunpro. This app isn’t ready to help you memorize the vocab. It’s just here to make money.

This will help you a ton!. I got the app to help me memorize the words on the go. It's good to just pop open the app and start practicing . This app helps you not only by showing you pictures but uses the words in sentences to help you get a better understanding, I've learned a lot thanks to this!

Fantastic app!. This is a great app to use with the genki lessons. It's amazing for reviewing each chapter. I was so sick of using flash cards. I realized I had poor pronunciation on a few words too. The audio examples helped clear that up for me. The app runs really smoothly too!!

Make sure mute phone / silent mode is off. GENKI is treated like a game and as such audio will be silent if it is off. Otherwise the app works fine. Good like with nihongo

Not for beginners. I was disappointed to find out that there is no way to study the terms written in romanji so I cannot use this set to study as a beginner. Only good for pronunciation but it is not effective enough to be worth $6.

Sound issue. Great app to reenforced your Hiragana and Japanese vocabulary. To fix the sound just un-mute your sound with the side switch. Worked for me on iPhone 6s.

Perfect!. Awesome app. Does everything I could ask for! Thank you!

Enjoyable and useful. This app is a very useful accompaniment to the book and enjoyable to use. It would be good if there was a way to zoom in or if the Japanese at least could be made larger as I find the furigana too small to read.

Functionality lacking. While the flash card system is great - once you say you know a word it disappears- to review all words again you must reset. Would be great if there was a quiz or something as opposed to “turning off” the words gotten right. Reviewing is just as important as getting to know.

Basically good but frequent crashes!. This app is quite basic yet well suited to review the vocabulary from the books. A spaced repetition approach for reviewing would be nice though. Unfortunately I cannot give more stars right now since the app frequently crashes (~40% of cases) on my IPhone 5 IOS 8.1 on the transition between vocabulary subsets (swiping into a new chapter subsection). Please fix!

Decent App; perfect for Genki textbook users. I bought this app hoping it would help me in conjunction with the Genki 1 textbook. Vocab cards follow the same layout of the textbook and can be viewed in either English or Hiragana/Katakana/Kanji readings the latter of which I used almost exclusively. Learning is done via flash cards which you can tap on screen for the answer, after which you choose whether you 'know it' 'maybe know it' and 'don't know it', this affects the frequency and whether or not the cards will show up in future. As with most Genki apps I would love for them to have a trail period first before buying or a paywall as the initial cost is pricy when you don't exactly know what you're getting. I would also find it easier to learn if they had a quiz or multiple choice answer method for the vocab as well. All in all its a good little app to be used in conjunction with the textbook, easy to navigate and a good learning tool if you can get past the initial price point!

Great app for Vocab. Great aid for the text book! Could be improved with SRS.

I’m writing a second review, they fixed the app. great work! Works great! Thank you so much for listening and fixing it

List of vocabulary essentially bricked.. The most recent update of the app has, for reasons unknown, removed the touch-to-scroll alphabet within the vocabulary list, rendering it completely useless. Every time you start up the app, you will be forced to scroll through the entire list, all the way from 'A' in english or ’あ’ in 日本語 every time you want to look up any vocabulary. Had I known this would be implemented, I never would have bought the app. This change should be rectified immediately.

Great !. Exactly what it says , love it

Horrifically overpriced. I got this and another genki app and completely regret it. I just found the interface really stubborn to navigate. There used to be a really good flashcard app and i thought this would be like that. For what they give you this is hardly worth the cost, especially if you already have the textbooks. I thought this would just be an easier way to study the genki vocab but its not. Very much regret this purchase.

Keeps crashing. As I go through my deck the app periodically crashes while letting me know I'm finished X number of cards and have X number to go before I finish. I keep checking the App Store for an update to solve this ~ otherwise it's a good app~ cool way to memorize the vocab without making your own flash cards :)

Not impressed. This app is totally useless. I want my money back :(

Was working fine until the latest update. There’s a bug in the check feature where the text is white so you can’t see it since it’s on a white background. Please fix, thank you!!

Good supplement with text. Love having this as a review with the textbook. Thanks for adding a shuffle!

Genki. My favorite textbook has iPhone apps! Buy them all! Thank you Japan Times❤️

Works well. This works well as a companion to the textbook. It's worth the price.

Awesome app!. Great app specially if you are using the Genki textbook to learn Japanese. This is the basic level.

Not optimized for iPad. It's only optimized for iPhone, along with the Kanji app. As I have an iPad, this can be pretty annoying because the iPhone app does not rotate or use up all of the screen space. Furthermore, when it is made big, the app is a lot less clear.

Game please!. This app is perfect for studying vocabulary within sentences but I feel as though a simple in app game would be better to help learn just strictly the vocabulary. :)

Nice to have. Nice as a supplement to the book and great for on the go as a commuter instead of whipping out a book on the bus.

Good flashcards - Worthless Review System. This has pretty good flashcards, but it lacks a robust SRS system to help you remember anything. I've consequently switched over to using Genki decks on Anki instead.

Great!. Very helpful but wish there were an alphabet scrollbar for the list like the kanji list. You scroll forever to get to words farther down the alphabet.

Very useful For learning Japanese. I'm taking my third quarter of Japanese and I used the Genki Vocab And Genki kanji apps to study. I have an A in the class now and before I only had an B or C grade. Thank you so much for creating this App. I find that having the tools easily Accessable to use on the bus inspired me to study more. Cheer! -Orock

Not compatible with iPad as advertised. Although the vendor says that the app is “optimized” for iPhone, it clearly indicates that the app is “compatible with” iPad as well. It is not.

Would really appreciate support for IOS 6. I purchased this with great excitement before reading that only IOS 7 is supported. My bad, so I rated it a neutral 3 stars. At the time I didn't realize my 4th generation Ipod Touch couldn't (and apparently won't ever) run IOS 7. I am so very sad! Please provide an update that will allow this to run on IOS 6.

My life is so much better. So much easier to memorize vocab.

Answer disappears to quickly. Very frustrating to check myself because he answer disappears quickly. Otherwise a very useful companion to the book.
