The most functional Bird Song app on the market by far. Make your own bird song recordings and keep a bird song diary.

Have you ever heard a bird singing and wondered "What kind of bird is that?". Bird Song Id is a great tool to help you learn to quickly and easily identify birds by their songs and calls. It's great fun to use too. With Bird Song Id, identification can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Bird Song Id has been created by professional published ecologists. The app does not need an internet connection, all songs and calls are downloaded when the app is purchased, one hundred and eighteen species are included.

We have included an early version of Automatic Recognition in the app for you to try. We hope this feature will help you identify common bird species. However, it needs a good quality recording to work, and takes a bit of time and patience to get used to. Automatic Recognition takes place on the device, no connection to the internet or mobile network is needed.

How successful is it? Our aim is to get the correct bird in the top three of those listed. In our testing of over 1,000 samples we found the success rate to be 85%.

Remember this is an early release of this innovative feature, so please be gentle. A demo is available on YouTube.

--------------- HELP ----------------
Automatic Recognition needs a good quality recording of the bird
-------------
Remove the case from your iPhone if you use one as this will significantly dampen the microphone
-------------
Only record when it is very quiet, apart from the bird singing of course
-------------
Be close to the bird singing, as close as you can be without disturbing it
-------------
Only record when a single bird is singing, or when a single bird is dominant
-------------
The analysis graph should have plenty of blue and green colors with few or no black peaks
-------------
Be patient, dont expect miracles, the system works but needs good clear recordings
-------------
The peaks on the graph should reach all the way to the top. Low peaks indicate poor quality and recognition is unlikely
-------------
A difference between two birds of less than 10% is not that significant, so listen to the samples from both to help you further
-------------
The microphone is at the bottom of an iPhone, point the bottom of the phone towards the bird
-------------
Record a single bird at a time
-------------
Record for the full 30 seconds
-------------
Avoid windy conditions. Air moving over the microphone will mask the bird sounds
-------------
Playing songs to the app from recorded material on the internet, other apps or CDs is unlikely to work as this material is digitally processed and edited (inter phase gaps are often shortened). They sound very different to recording birds for real on an iPhone or iPad in the natural environment.

Pretty good but could use a search function. As somebody who doesn’t know bird families (which family is the mockingbird in?) and sometimes not full official names (is it the “Eastern Barn Owl” or just “Barn Owl”?) I could really use a search function to complement the index. Also, the song recognition could benefit from a differentiation between calls and songs as there is in the rest of the app. What is there is good, but it could be better.

Work in progress. They're getting there ... but still have a ways to go before the ID feature is easy & reliable. To be fair, recording quality from a phone with lots of background noise is not great. Plus, birds have accents. A titmouse in DC doesn't quite sound like the titmouse in the recording. That makes the problem fundamentally different than music ID apps like Shazam. Still, the developers make *usage* difficult an unintuitive. That, they have control over ... and should work to improve.

The Shazam of bird song. I really enjoy this app. It does have issues when multiple types of birds are singing, overall it really can help you figure things out. I like that it gives you a percentage match rate and easy access to all the possible birds photos and details. Another great feature is the ability to add onto your recording to get a better match possibility.

Pretty good!. Just started using the app and its helpful but doesn't have all the songs or calls. I wish I could look up by call or song signature. When I hear a song and can't see the bird, I would like to find which bird sings by its song.

Epic fail. I got the app a couple of years ago and was disappointed at the time but thought I would try again. I live in a fairly secluded quiet area and use an iPhone 10. Even When there is no background noise and the birds are very close I have only once had the app say recording quality was “good” it is almost universally “fair” even when I play the recording back and it is crystal clear. This app is limited to only 183 birds when it advertises 240, and the bird in the app often have only the song or the call, not both. This app have never successfully identified any bird I have recorded. I am very disappointed that I am still unable to identify any of the hidden treasures in my back yard using this app...

Like the app but. I like the app. I sit in the backyard watching the birds at the feeders. I see a bird and quickly start scanning the bird pictures for him/her. By the time I think I found it the bird had flown away. Never get a chance to record the sound it is making. I’m slow and don’t know the category of birds yet. Wish they had pictures of both male and female side by side.

Waste of money. This may be good for some things but for id'ing bird calls(which is what I got it for), it's worthless. At least 6 times have recorded very distinctive calls with very little background noise and ap was not able to id. One bird I was able to visually id but others, no luck. These should have been common birds that the ap should be able to handle. Not happy.

No, it’s not Shazam for birds. I can’t believe I paid money for this app. The description that they put in had a quote saying it was Shazam for birds. It isn’t. I’ve tried recording 4-5 different times, all loud recordings with minimal noise in the background (crickets, birds much farther away, an occasional car from a road farther away), and not one ever got analyzed. When I looked at the list that’s included in the automatic recognition, it’s so minimal. There is no way you at this is Shazam for birds when that list is so short. There is a much larger database included in the app with recordings, but unless you want to scroll through a hundred or so birds and listen to each one, you will not find what you are looking for. I feel like I got swindled and I want my money back.

Doesn't work. Fake reviews.. This app completely fails on identifying Bird songs. I can only surmise that any positive review was from employees or paid reviewers. The positive reviews do sound like ads not real people. I lead bird walks and help teach bird ID and this app can't even get common, clear, obvious Bird songs right. The layout of the app makes it look like someone in a 3rd world country put it together that never even has been to USA. Chachalaca as a bird family? As someone that communicates with thousands of beginner birders on a regular basis I will let them know to steer clear of this app.

Great ID if you have clear loud audio. Main feature is the song ID, which works great if - and it is a big if - you can get a clear, loud recording. The UI could use a lot of help, but this is a free app, so it gets a big break on the rating there. Even without automatic birdsong identification, the app is a lot of fun to play with to listen to bird calls and learn to recognize them by ear.

Nope. This App purports to be Bird Song ID, yet that feature is buried after several screen taps under My Recordings. Even when you tap "My Recordings," nothing is obvious about what to do next. So you fumble around finding Add Recording. Finally you see a tab that says Automatic Recognition. It is simply not Field Friendly. "Automatic Recognition" should be the first thing you see when you open up the app...a big button to hit like Shazam. When you hear a bird you can't identify, it does not give you the time to 1. Get the phone out, 2. Find the app on your phone, 3. Then wade through screens until you find the hidden buttons to do what you need. By that time, the bird has flown. There are other inexplicable aspects of the App: Bird Families. Here's what I see on the first screen, stuff like Cardinal (not a bird family), Chickadee (not a bird family), Chachalaca (really? on the first screen? What are my chances of happening across a Chachalaca?) Good idea, but ill-conceived. Developers should make the primary function of this App "Auto Recognition" then put a large button in the middle of the screen that starts that process with a single tap.

interesting. This is an interesting app - the only clunky thing about it so far is that it takes more keystrokes than makes sense to access the record function. The birds don't tend to wait around as you look for the function.

Singing companions. We moved to a 4 1/2 acre farm. There are several bird families here. With this ap we are able to identify them from their song. That allowed us to look them up in the picture identity. Now when we see them we know who they are and their song.

Great concept!. What a cool concept to record and compare bird sounds! Yes, I agree with others, it is a bit unfriendly, but I just played around with it to see how things work. I’m still learning the system, but over all it is doing what it says. Sometimes the recording quality message appears and I don’t know why, perhaps because there are multiple birds calling at once. I hope the developers keep working on it! This, in conjunction with the Audubon app are going to make spring and summer much more fun!

Very finicky. When you are able to get a good ID it’s great, however it’s very few and far between. There cannot be any background noise at all otherwise you’ll get a poor recording error, which fir me seems to be most of the time. I’ve also noticed it favors certain birds, tho if you listen to their songs they sound nothing like the bird I’m hearing whatsoever.

Frustrating and inaccurate. I appreciate that the developers are trying to do something very difficult. It's also a very cool idea! I liked the interface they developed; the graphics were good, and I think it might have become fairly easy to use once you got used to it. But- 1. It was really hard to figure out how to record a bird's song from the main screen. That's what I bought this app for! 2. Once I got to where I could record birdsong, the app failed to record. Seriously, the on board voice memo app did better. This app requires you to record for 30 seconds, but it shuts down in less than a second with a failure message. For the record, what I was trying to record was a house wren singing nearby. If you know those little guys, you know how loud they are! The voice memo app recorded him perfectly. 3. Then I randomly looked up "Osprey". The range information given was not accurate. I hope iBird Northeast will still work after the latest iPhone update. That's a solid, simple app with accurate information. This one is a great idea that doesn't work well in practice.

Potentially Great!. Once I learn how to navigate this app and access all it has to offer this will be a 5+ rating & review. It’s not very intuitive to use and I’ve gotten lost in areas I didn’t intend to be in while researching fairly simple pursuits on my backyard birds. Hoping it will continue refining & improving. I’m a fan!

My favorite app. I'm a photographer who recently started photographing birds. This app is great and identifies my little friends and then lets me play back their songs and calls. The interface could use a little work but still my favorite app!

Deleting. I tried to use this app several times over the years to record and identify birds. I never did get it to work. I guess the problem was background noise. I did enjoy the sample songs and calls, however, and the beautiful pictures of birds. However I’m deleting this one today and I’m going to try another. Sorry.

Very good!. There are all kinds of apps, but there are few, in my opinion, that brings us closer to nature than those that help remind us how beautiful nature can be. Thanks to the Ornithologist at Bird Song for bringing us closer to that natural beauty of the original "song."

I want my $5 back. I am having exact same experience as the other negative reviewers. The calls couldn't be clearer yet the app is unable to identify a single COMMON bird. I even played a call on my computer in a quiet room with the app on record. That is an ideal lab condition. It failed. So if anyone else buys this app after reading this review it must be because you want to waste $5. This app is beyond awful. Developers did not test it. I want my money back!!!!!!!

Delightful app!. For someone who grew up surrounded by northern song- (and other) birds, I've always felt woefully ignorant about their songs. This app has helped me to begin to match up the birdcalls I hear with those I can identify visually, as well as to identify those whose names I only knew. Very pleasing—thank you!

Not as helpful as I hoped. I have tried this a few times and the system always claims poor audio quality on recording and no match. Twice I was right next to the bird and they had loud distinct calls. Maybe the recording in a typical neighborhood is the issue. Phone mic tests showed clear recording. I then reviewed entire list of birds in library and found selection for my state (AZ) to be very limited. I am better off finding what I need on internet lookup. Nice idea, but for me, product not developed enough.

Great tool for identifying neighborhood birds. I hear interesting bird calls and song without being able to see the birds clearly. This helps me narrow down the possibilities much better. I’m looking forward to recording some that I hear regularly. I would appreciate more detailed information on the birds’ seasonal distribution.

Yes. I agree with the comment, automatic recognition should be a right up front button for record/recognize so that one can capture the song; often only brief songs are available, and the bird and its song are gone before the, frustrating attempt to record it, is accomplished. Recognize should be a simple button that records instantly, and asks questions secondly.

Not the most user friendly - Helpful nevertheless. Although this is not the most user friendly, as mentioned - it is still very useful and does what it advertises. I too would like a better system to guide the user and update their sound recognition software to keep it in line with the ever improving technology. Otherwise I would have added the fifth star.

A real disapointment. I’ve used this app off and on for over 6 months and I’d guess 65% of my recordings come back as poor quality even though the bird is singing in the tree next to me. Maybe an auxillary mic would help. But when I get a good recording, which is about 1/3 of the time, it has never correctly identified the bird. I mean never as in not even once. This week I play some simple bird songs (the Easter Phoebe for example) from Merlin (another app) and this app couldn’t identify even perfectly recorded bird songs. My only advice is if you use it, and you don’t know your birdsongs, don’t trust this app to help you. You’d be better off taking the results and using them to eliminate what bird you heard. And FWIW, I’ve never rated an app 1 star before. As I said, this is a real disapointment.

Very useful and accurate!. I love this app. As a amateur birder, it’s really helped me learn, discover and enjoy birds. It's made it much easier for me to get that practice in through the automatic recognition feature and by organizing songs into useful groups. Th app contains basic information for each species and beautiful, high-quality pictures. It also includes one song example and call notes per species. The app also really engaging and really goes the extra mile to help you identify birds more easily. I really enjoy how it turns practice sessions into fun quizzes. especially love the way the game plays the song and shows you multiple choice answers while also giving you an option to get a hint for the song. The game also gives you a sense of achievement by tracking your score and comparing it with other users so you can check on your progress. Love it and really recommend it!

Doesn’t work. This is NOT the Shazam for birds. Difficult to figure out how to even record the sound. Always says poor sound quality even deep in the woods with no wind and the bird close by. Few birds are in the library, so even trying to play samples doesn’t work. Manual ID section is not user friendly (what IS a short/med/long birdsong length?) Perhaps having samples of each for someone to choose from would be better.

Not an accurate app whatsoever.. I had high hopes when I got this app, but I was greatly disappointed when I realized the app was essentially just guessing the most common birds around me. To test this, I played a variety of different bird calls from another phone and had this app try to identify them; sure enough, it just kept suggesting common birds like the cardinal, goldfinch, and robin. I suppose the app is probably right some of the time, given how common those birds are... but it’s purely because of luck. I will say though, at least you can play the bird calls on this app to check if it sounds the same. (Though the answer is usually no.) That’s the only thing saving this review from being 1-Star. I wasted money on this app. If you’re an aspiring birder, it seems there is still no great method to identify bird calls other than just looking up possible candidates the slow way.

Largely Useless. As consistent as bird sings tend to be, and with apps like SoundHound able to pick out and match even obscure tunes, you would figure that someone would develop an app to identify birds. Well, worry no more: if it exists, this isn’t it! BirdSongID is so picky about the quality of recordings to the point where they certainly can’t be blamed for failing to identify even the most basic bird calls. Record for a minute and it’ll warn you you need to record for thirty seconds. And short of crawling up in the tree and being right next to the bird, it will tell you your recording quality is poor. Its ability to discriminate bird songs from one another is non-existent. Don’t bother with this app: it’s a waste of both time and money.

Almost. I like this a lot, but find navigation difficult. There are many times when there's too much other noise to get a clear recording, and the manual look up is cumbersome. Organization by families is not useful for many (probably most) of us. This morning I heard three fledglings with a call that was new to me. My best guess was they were cowbirds. They were gone before I could record. I opened the app- which is organized by bird family and I had no idea what the cowbird family is. No search function on the first page, but an index. So I tried the index, only to find it too is organized by family rather than name- not useful at all!! I started to dig through and finally found the cowbird under Icterid. Too much work!! Only later did I figure out that I had to go through a family to find the Search function. Please either put the search function on the 1st page, or organize the index by name. Re-do this and I'm change my rating to 5 stars. And yes, they were cowbirds. What a curious call!!

Not worth it. On three separate occasions, I recorded the song of birds I was literally looking at and could easily identify. They were a Carolina Wren, a crow, and an Eastern Bluebird. The audio quality of the bluebird recording may have not been great, so I’ll even give a pass for that one, but the other two were very close and crystal clear, especially the wren. This app misidentified all of them. This completely shot my confidence in the apps ability to accurately tell me what bird I was listening to. Don’t waste your time.

Love it but want more. It’s great. As you improve over the coming years, please make a version that continuously listens, shows likely birds from the last analyzed audio segment in a scrolling fashion and keeps summary statistics by location. We live on a migratory fly way and have so many birds in our yard.

Most incredible bird ID app ever. I really enjoy birdwatching and this app is the only app I am aware of that will record and identify bird calls and songs. It is truly incredible. Several birds in my backyard have been elusive with their calls, and this app help me not only identify them but archived the recording for future playback. I also discovered the birds in my backyard love to hear birds of their kind calling, it is so fun to play bird calls back on a loop in the app and watch the birds in my backyard flit around in excitement as they hear the bird calls from the app. 10 out of 10!

Great Song ID App. This is a great app to help ID bird songs. You can record the song and have it ID the bird or you can play the birds songs/call. Only thing I am worried about is the app hasn’t been updated in over a year. So have the developers left the app or is the app that good it doesn’t need updating?

Good for most common birds. We have used this app to identify, or verify our hunch about, perhaps 4 or 5 common birds in our area. However, there are still some that just are not in the database. We don’t use the recording feature, instead we browse the listing making best guesses as to the type of bird. I’d like to see the number of birds identified increased.

Recorder is useless. I bought this to identify my backyard birds from their songs, and for that purpose this app is a complete waste of money; it has yet to accurately identify a single bird song from my recordings. The app complains that the quality of my recordings is poor and it seems unless the bird is singing directly into your phone this will be the case, because even if it’s just the one bird singing fairly loudly and no other background noise, my recording is still not good enough. There is no way to edit your recording to cut out extra birds, and even their own recorded examples will sometimes have extraneous birds chiming in so you don’t know what you’re supposed to be hearing. The manual ID feature is a joke; I’ve gotten wide-ranging suggestions from owl to heron to sparrow for a single entry. I don’t know how they come up with their percentage accuracy but these too are a joke because they are wildly inaccurate. I also know that some birds have multiple calls/songs but the app does not give more than one of each. Don’t waste your money on this one.

Great app for visual learners. I use this app to learn bird songs before I go out in the field. I can look at the picture and hear the song. I am just a beginner so it might not be a good tool for a more advanced birder to identify an unfamiliar song heard in the field. I use it and enjoy it-thanks!

Very cool!. This is a great app for deciphering bird calls. It's extremely accurate...actually, mind blowingly accurate. I would highly recommend this app to anyone who enjoys learning about different birds as they come and go each season. My only suggestion to the developers would be that they reorganize some of the features as they can be a bit tricky to land on, especially when time is of the essence which is often the case when trying to capture a bird's song or call.

Ineffective. I got this app because I was trying hard to identify a bird that I keep hearing a unique call sound for but can never see the bird. I find this app rather picky about the quality length and loudness of the recording made. I did not have trouble finding the record button like some have complained about. But I have made sample after sample of the bird song and I keep getting warnings about too short, poor sound quality, not loud enough, and then when I think I got one that matches their picky criteria it comes up with a list of birds that have no resemblance to what I recorded. The UI/UX is clunky and strange at best. Sometimes the play button has no stop button, and sometimes it does. There’s no way to edit the length of the song sample to eliminate other birds that are chiming in. After you have it analyzed the song it gives you a list of bird choices. If you pick one to listen to their recording of it and decide that’s not the one... if you go back, your choices are add it to the library or you can listen to your recording again but you can’t analyze it and get your list back it appears. If you close this window because you’re not ready to add it since you didn’t find the bird, it will toss your recording. lt’s just a wacky app and a waste of five dollars. I wished I could get my five dollars back as it couldn’t even ID one bird call.

Awesome. Convenient and helpful. This has helped identify birds that we have not seen before. Matching the song is so much easier than trying to read the books with musical representations. Keep adding those songs!

Only good for listening to its list of calls. I don’t recommend this app. It is difficult to use, no help icon & not logical. As others have said, it can’t identify your clear recordings. You can look at pictures of birds & hear their calls is the only use for it. Sometimes my recording just disappear. If you find the name of a bird you recorded & try to add it, it is almost impossible using the “change “ button; as that closes the app. It is very frustrating & time consuming to use.

User unfriendly. I specifically bought this app to ID bird songs in my backyard and assumed it would do just that since "ID automatic recognition" is in the app's title. Unfortunately, it took me a while to figure out how to create a recording in order to identify the song. The ID function is there, but buried under layers of taps, so it's definitely NOT the primary function of this app. If you were to put the ID/auto-recognition function on the home page and readily accessible that would be an improvement. For now, I feel that I have wasted my money.

Very confusing. I’ve used the app a number of times now but still find the interface bizarre and confusing. What is with the quiz screen in manual ID with the eye and numbers in the corners? Where did my recording go? Why did all the bird options for my automatic recognition disappear after I played the first one? I’ve managed to ID some birds by listening to the recordings and so the catalog of bird songs is useful, but otherwise this is very frustrating. Please fix the interface.

Basically never identifies correctly. Even in the rare case when it deems a recording good enough it more or less always thinks any sound is a Brown Thrasher or often other birds not even present here (and yes app knows my location and many of the birds are loud and clear). The UI is also a bit weird... keeps going to the save recording page with no back button and similar bad navigation design. I am going to uninstall so I stop wasting my time with this app.

Missed distinctive Whip-poor-will. I have tried this app for several weeks, and it has successfully identified a bird only once. I live in the woods with little background noise, so recording bird song is fairly easy to do. Identification using this app is not. Last night, I recorded a single bird sound from a short distance. I knew it was a whippoorwill, but the app didn’t, even though the recording was strong. Turns out, the distinctive whippoorwill is not in its database. Why does my database list only 183 bird sounds, not the 240+ advertised? I thought the app would save my recordings, so I could replay them later for friends, but “my recordings” is empty. Why? The app is not user-friendly at all, but I hope the developers answer my questions so I can get more enjoyment from their app.

Worst app ever! I want my money back!. Sitting in my backyard with birds chirping and it cannot even identify a common Robin. 90% of the time it doesn’t even pickup the chirps (which are very loud). This app wants you do record for 30 seconds and try to get only one bird call! REALLY! I’ve tried to tell the other birds to hush but for some reason they just don’t listen to me! Believe me it’s not my phone or my settings, I’ve checked them multiple times. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD WARNED $$ ON THIS APP....NO MATTER WHAT PRICE IT IS, EVEN IF ITS FREE!

YES!. I read some reviews before purchasing that made me skeptical of the abilities that this app would have. However, they were completely off!! This app is a genuine pleasure to use. I mostly enjoy it because it's convenient and extremely helpful. The quiz function is probably a favorite because I love learning new things by being quizzed! It identifies the birds the birds that I hear very rapidly as well! Learning bird sounds is probably the single most important skill in moving from beginning birding to intermediate birding . This app is worth all the money in the world and I was more than glad to pay just $5.

Priorities Mixed Up. I bought this app to ID bird calls FIRST AND FOREMOST, and that should be what I see FIRST! The first time I tried to use it, the bird was gone before I could find the REAL purpose of the app. While listening to bird calls is informative on the app, it's NOT why I purchased the app! Please upgrade the app to have its Advertised Function front and center! It does work, just not easily while in the field and that was its advertised function.

Dissappointed in every aspect. I purchased this app hoping that it would help me and my wife to identify the birds that we commonly hear from our window. We live in Eastern Canada and the app failed to recognize most calls and songs. Navigating through the bird lists proved unnecessarily cumbersome, and the bird families groupings are not complete enough to be useful. Also, many recordings are either missing, or are too quiet to be of much use. In the end, I choose to delete this app despite having paid for it because it isn’t useful enough to justify the large quantity of storage space (>270MB) that it consumes.

needs big improvement. If you are an ultra amature looking for backyard birds, this mightbe adequate, but it is very poor at recognizing anything remotely unusual. It requires a 30 second recording clip to properly analyze a song. How many birds sing continuously for 30 seconds?? I am afraid I classify this as a total waste of money. We took it on a trip to birding central ie Point Pelee - and it failed completely to recognize anything but a robin, and even that was an uncertain result. It needs to recognize very short songs and recordings to be useful. I couldn't even get it to recognize simple songs from the Cornell site played from my computer.

It's good. The app is fun

Could not recognize birds. Doesn’t work. Had perfectly clear sound to record. Suggested few birds with sound not even close.

Poor app. Pretty disappointing. 20 feet away from a loud woodpecker and this app could not identify this bird. I have been unsuccessful at identifying any bird in sight with this app. Need substantial improvement to justify the price.

Mad Moose Al. I like the app in theory. I haven’t used it enough to really rate it effectively. The one problem I’ve had is getting clear recordings. Years ago I got a parabolic reflector and recorded songs with a camcorder. The problem was matching the recordings with typical published bird songs. I am upgrading to a microphone designed for use with iPhone. If it works with the parabolic reflector and app it should solve both problems. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I’ve seen over 25 in Connecticut! B) The App hasn’t been updated in over 2 years! C) The App isn’t regionally specific. I doubt I’ll see a road-runner or Chachalaca in the Northeast. D) Some birds are included that even a non-Birder can recognize by sight and/or sound... (Osprey, Kingfisher, Hummingbird) It seems the developers have given up on this program. Although the record a sound feature is catchy, the data base is extremely limited and ineffectual.

Love this app. I just wish it allowed us to keep track of our sightings.

FANTASTIC APP. It is such a good feeling to know what bird is making the various sounds on my patio. I try to wait until only one is chattering you make it easier to identify. Wonderful app. So interesting to expand my knowledge of nature.

Easy to use. I found this easy to use and fun to play around with

Back yard bird watchers. We love to sit out back to watch and listen to the song birds. We already had an idea of what birds we see but many times we hear the song but can’t see the bird. The songs available to hear has help us.

terrible app. The song record does not work. It keep saying the app cannot use the mic. Also the app skin is awful. You don’t see if you pushed a button. The app looks like it was from the 2nd generation iphone. There are much better apps for song recognition for free, such as Merlin.

Very Useful App. Many times I've wanted to figure out what bird was chirping or singing in the woods or across a field. This App has been very useful for that, and has helped me learn to recognize quite a few bird songs as well as bird identifications.

Fabulous App. Being a amateur to mid bird watcher this app is fantastic. I also recently moved to a new state and it is great getting to know the birds here using the app too!

Help on the bird walks. I take my iPhone on my birding walks and having this app is so helpful. I can identify a bird in the moment and not have to carry a heavy field guide.

Nice app for finding out more about the birds in your area.. Haven’t used very much, but so far I do like what I’ve seen (and heard). I’ll try to update later after a month or two of utilizing the app.

Recording to identify doesn’t work. I’ve tried numerous times to record/identify bird calls, which is the main reason I got this app. It flat out doesn’t work. Perhaps if there was a single bird calling, non-stop, with no background noise whatsoever, I’d have better luck. But when does that ever happen? Note: the bird calls I’m recording are the dominant sound & I have made 30 second recordings. Very disappointing.

Awareness Heightened. Now that I can put a name to some of the forest sounds, it has made me much more aware of the variety of feathered creatures around me.

Difficult to use. I am unhappy to report that this app is so unintuitive that it isn't useful. You have to go through several steps to make a recording, and by that time the bird has gone. Once, I managed a recording that was deemed "high quality" by the app and was then presented with what seemed to be a list of common backyard birds, none of which remotely resembled the recorded call.

Dbjm488. I am really enjoying this app. I can identify so many birds sons now. Thank you for making the app so easy

Really fun and helpful. Living in the middle of nowhere has its benefits, there are tons of birds. I want to know what they are and this app helped me figure it out. I have woodpeckers, blue jays and so many more! I love it.

Terrible. Very difficult app to use. There are so many tabs and the navigation is confusing. It was difficult to figure out how to record, search and save bird songs. There is no way to search by region which is annoying because it shows you birds that aren't near you. This app needs a major UX overhaul, especially for something as complex as recording and identifying bird calls.

Listening with friends. When we travel we like to try to identify the areas morning songbirds over coffee

Not what it says it is. I tried several auto recordings and none were identified. Also the manual ID doesn’t limit by the region even though it is one of the criteria. I think this was a very wasted purchase and I will just delete it. There is no way they give you to comment or contact directly. Must be a reason.

Good app to have. This little app doesn’t take much room on my iPhone 10, and has a lot of data. We live near Tampa bay & have id’d All the wading birds & the big flocks of robins here now. Thanks!

Stopped recording altogether. The apps record button no longer works. Privacy settings were set accordingly to allow this app access. When I bought it 3 seasons ago, it worked fine. Now, when the record button is pushed, it idles and times out. Last update was 2 years ago. The developers aren’t maintaining it. Nothing. Useless. Very unhappy as I paid $10 for this defunct app.

Not complete yet. This is an app that has a good idea but has a long way to go. Birds have many different songs but the app will only recognize one per bird. It also has a hard time even distinguishing the ones it has on file. Was directly under a wren recording and it was third choice. At this time it should be free until it is developed. Not worth the $4.99 price at this point.

Bird song Id. I find this app very frustrating. I fully recognize the difficulty of having an app recognize a call or song, but I have tried it on calls that I know and that I don’t know. What I tend to get is “song not analyzed, with analyzed spelled wrong! The producers of this could and should have done much better.

Waste of money. I really wanted this to help me identify birdsongs while hiking. It has never worked. Even when I had a clear recording, It apparently didn’t have the bird in it’s limited repertoire. I searched to many of it’s samples and couldn’t come up with the right song, even though it isn’t uncommon for this area and I remember hearing the song often as a child. Disappointed.

Premature.. The ask for review should come after you try the app, not after you first open it.

Love it. Just what I've been waiting for love this app. Able to identify tons of birds just by hearing their song.

Needs better mic pickup. I can't get this ap to record a single thing! I level on the edge of a forest and my birds are loud and plentiful. I have an iPhone 7, so it's not the hardware. I really want to give this ap a good review but it's not there yet. I will change my rating once the mic actually records anything and I find out what I'm hearing! I had great hope but am currently disappointed.

Good for playing bird calls. This app may not be great for hearing bird calls and identifying the bird, but it’s a nice quick resource for playing bird sounds.

Great App. This has been a huge help in identifying the birds that are outside my window! Wish it was more complete or had different areas that you could buy as an add on

It's fantastic!. I couldn’t figure out what this one bird was so I downloaded the app. It told me that it was a Mockingbird and it was! Get this app. You won’t be disappointed.

Want my money back. Not only was the app difficult to figure out how to use but is useless in recognizing birds. Not only did it not properly recognize two recordings of birds in my yard, but then I played bird songs from the Audubon Birds app on another device and this app failed to recognize 5 out of 5 birds! Waste of money!

The Only One. I find this App very-very helpful. When looking for birds one often hears them long before seeing one. Knowing what sounds to expect helps locate seldom seen birds. A very useful App it's only weakness is not very many bird IDENTIFIED.

I am so disappointed.. I read the Shazam feature and thought that when I went outside the app would recognize my bird. This is no better than my other apps for song recognition. I don't want to bother to record I want the app to have at least a general idea of what Bird I'm listening to NOW

Great app. Love this app. This helps us identify birds by their song when we're unable to view them. Love the information about the bird species in our area.

Wish it was better. The interface is not intuitive - i would expect the recording feature (the whole point of the app) to be front and center. Conditions have to be absolutely perfect to get a decent recording. The best I’ve gotten is a “fair” recording (and 0 matches) even if it’s quiet and the call is clear.

Meh. I just got this app, so I’m still figuring it out, BUT it seems like a bird song identification app should be more straightforward. The record button isn’t on the first screen, and overall the app seems dated. I’ve used it twice to record birdsong: it correctly matched the birdsong once. Hoping I can use it more to learn about birds in my area.

Newbie friendly. I am new to bird watching and bird songs and this has been a great support in helping me identify. I had heard the song of Wilson Snipe, very intriguing, didn’t know what bird it was until this APP.

What a cool app!. Very fun to use, and it has a variety of different features. Well worth it - I would highly recommend!

Nice app. Love the bird sound identification feature once I figured out how to us it. Wasn't to tricky, but instructions on how to use it isn't real clear. Helped me in identifying a bird I was hearing I hadn't heard before. Worth the download.

Helpful and easy to use. In field, as always in field, less than optimal conditions sometimes cause frustration but in general I have been pleased with the app, and use it frequently. It feels great to identify an unfamiliar call!

Always accurate. Found this to be very good and easy to use

Refund please?. Waste of time and money. Once you wade through and finally find the ID part of the app, then figure out how to record, it just shows a list of common birds in the area. I was trying to ID a specific call. It was clear and loud, no background noise. The bird I expected wasn't even on the list. It couldn't even ID a mourning dove!

Not worth it- don’t waste your money. I really wish there was a free trial period option for this app because I would have been able to see how useless it is and not wasted $4.99. If there is ANY background noise whatsoever it will tell you it’s poor quality and then pull up a random list of possible birds. The app is unable to correctly identify a Northern Cardinal for crying out loud- I mean those guys have loud and very distinguishable songs. Don’t waste your time or your money, you’ll end up being frustrated and not learning anything. Go to ebird dot com and search their massive library, better luck figuring it out by process of elimination than trying to with this app.

Awesome. You have to be in a quiet area with little background noise. This works! I have identified several birds over the summer

Not worth it. Just get the Merlin Bird ID app. It's free and has more birds and calls. On its own this app isn't horrible but why spend your money if you can get a better quality app with more information for free.

Clumsy but works. After frustration from a poorly designed interface I figured out how to make it work. A useful tool bit hoping they improve it or someone else comes on the scene.

Functional but clunky. Helps with identification. Could use some user interface improvement.

keep up the good work. Love the concept - and when it works it's terrific. Most of the time the microphone doesn't pick up the bird call even when it's close by. Sometimes it's wildly off. But I'm glad I paid for it. One of the appeals is it's a great way to learn bird calls.

Doesn’t work. As reported by others, this app doesn’t work at all. Maybe if you were perched in the tree and the bird is 3 feet away from you it might pick up sound but I was hoping that I could sit on my lanai and record the songs of birds that are not more than 20 feet from me with crystal clear sound but no. Not a single ID.

Fun to Listen to Songs. I like listening to the calls and songs, then trying to identify the sounds I’m hearing. The microphone recorder on the phone doesn’t work so well so it seems to have trouble reviewing the recordings.

Fascinating. This is very useful and entertaining. It has made me highly aware of all the birds singing outside and encouraged me to watch them.
