Pretty well-rounded. I’ve tried so many language apps, and this one is so far my favorite. It’s very immersive and repetitive, letting you hear, see, and say the words. I tried the Russian and the Korean courses as far as I could for the free version. For the Russian one, it gives you a conversation and has you answer a question about it at the end - you won’t understand everything said, but you’ll be able to grasp enough to answer the question. It’s very cool and motivating. There are a couple of things that I think could be added/addressed to make it even better. For one, writing practice. It does have you type words, but it doesn’t show you how to actually write either Hangul or the Cyrillic alphabets. The second thing is making a point to differentiate between formal and informal versions of words. So far, it’s only taught the informal versions for both languages - which is a huge no-no in Korean at least. I’m not sure how seriously formality is taken in Russia, but - still, you want to be able to greet a stranger properly (for example, hello is здравствуйте (zdravstvutye) for formal, привет (privyet) for informal). Even aside from that, this is the best learning app I’ve tried from what I can tell.

It’s okay. I really like it but they should make a plan that’s free and you have to watch ads and maybe earn hearts like duolingo so we can learn but not have to pay because some people can’t afford this stuff. I am okay with watching ads and stuff but come on? You couldn’t make a free plan that offers stuff but you have to watch ads. I think there should be a paid one and an unpaid one. Like unpaid should be ads, a limited amount of hearts and you have to wait a little bit to regenerate them or you can watch 2 ads for 2 hearts like duolingo but you might wanna change it up a bit. Then maybe the premium should be a plan you pay for with no ads, unlimited hearts, and everything unlocked. This is just my opinion because some people cannot pay for this stuff because they have to pay for school or other stuff. But other than than I think this is a way better app then all the other ones that I have ever tried to learn another language and that’s really the only flaw that you only get a small trial and then your forced to pay for it and don’t even get a choice with ads or anything. The design and the way they teach the languages thought are on point and I think the progress that people make on here is so good and better than any other app. I would definitely use this if it had a free version with ads.

I think the app could be improved!. I love the memrise website for language learning, and I would love to continue learning on my phone with this app, but it still doesn't have as many features and just isn't as convenient and helpful as the website on a computer is. I really would love to see the Speed Review option available on the app because it is on the website, but sadly, not on the app. I love the download for offline usage option in the app though, because I can continue studying anywhere with it, but I feel that I use Speed Review the most so I can't fully take advantage of this option when I am trying to refresh my mind of a large amount of vocabulary. Something else I would love to see on the app is the option of adding new courses. That is something I can only do on the website but I would love to be able to explore and try studying new languages during my free time on my phone, since I also tend to use my phone more than my laptop. These are my two biggest grievances, but other than those I truly love using memrise!

amazing! but i have one issue. i love this app so much!! i’ve had it for about 20 hours and i was getting excited to do my next session of learning korean. unfortunately, i can’t proceed because it wants me to pay. just when i found the PERFECT app to learn a language with, it turns out it isn’t actually perfect. i unfortunately cannot pay because i don’t have any money because i’m a minor. i love absolutely love to keep learning with this app, but now i can’t. i would love for this app to be just free with ads with the choice of paying for extra features, but now i’m completely blocked from learning a language that i’ve wanted to learn for years. i’ve tried to learn korean multiple times with many apps and this app actually seems like it’s perfect for me, but now i can’t use it anymore. i understand that’s how you make money, but ads are also a way to make money, so why not just do that instead and leave people the option of they want to pay for extra features? let’s say maybe you can only learn a certain amount every day, but if you pay, you can learn as much as you want. see? that would be so much better. i’m actually so sad now that i can’t use this app anymore because it’s so good and i’ve never started to learn a language this fast on my own with an app. i hope you can maybe fix this so i can keep going!!

AMAZING!!!!. SO much better than duolingo over all. this is the best app i've used for learning korean. it's accurate, and not at all frustrating. completely free with great features as is, and ad free!!!!! i've been a loyal user for years now and i've never wanted to switch to anything else. as far as constructive criticism for the app goes, the ONLY things i would suggest to change is adding a slow audio track to listen to as well, and the option to say things like duolingo has, but for free. maybe even if not fully free - have it to where you can test the feature every so often, or after using the app for (x) amount of time a day? with a language like polish or russian for me, it's better for me to be able to listen to the audio slowly to really hear the syllables and to pronounce the words and/or phrases better. i think it would be nice to be able to say things out loud without having a premium plan (comparative to duolingo, since they have it for free), but before that, i'd want the slow audio track option. over all, i'd give it 9/10 stars if this was a 10 star ranking system. i'm giving a full 5 on here, because over all, this is an amazing app. i love being able to easily see everything i've learned on here, the vast variety of languages you can choose from to learn, the order words are presented to you on here, and there's even more options on the desktop version than there is on the app!! to the memrise team, please keep doing what you're doing!!

Amazing app all around, could have more freestyle quizzes. I love this app to me it’s honestly the best one out there. Everything is built around the learner and they even give you real people saying the words instead of just robots. I’m doing Japanese on the app and only have one small issue, while the app does have several quiz options such as “difficult words” or “speed review” it doesn’t have the option to review past words that you want. It’ll select several words it thinks you should review instead of asking you. Of course there is the ability to add a word to “difficult words” making so it shows up in the “difficult words” quiz, but this does not include words that I’ve learned but know I’ve already forgotten. And while I may not be looking in the right place, there also seems to be no dictionary where I can view the words or phrases I already know. I’m still giving this app 5 stars for its initiative taken in giving the user the proper teaching tool for learning a new language.

For those serious about learning.... I’m already fluent in Spanish, speak both Castilian Spanish (Spain) and Mexican Spanish. However, since my husband is Mexican and we are raising our children speaking Spanish I wanted an app that helped me keep up with my Mexican Spanish since Castilian is often the first thing my brain jumps to when I’m speaking in Spanish. My first language is English and I’m constantly improving my Spanish language skills. I found this app to be a good way to constantly perfect my language skills. I also have some knowledge in German and a little in Russian and would like to take a look at those languages as well though Spanish is my main focus. I really love the app’s features though it’s a little pricey and I find the format a little confusing. I’m stuck doing level 1 words when I am way beyond that level of speaking, reading, and writing but maybe I’ll figure it out soon and by pass all of that. Either way I think no matter what level you are at in your language skills this app will help you perfect and reach your language goals.

Pretty great for beginners. In my opinion, this is great for beginners (at least in Japanese) coming from someone who has taken a language class, it categorizes the alphabets and particles while learning a few phrases along the way. I’ve recently wanted to learn Japanese but my high school schedule doesn’t allow for me to take a language class yet, and I’m very eager to start since my dad has been talking about visiting Sasebou. I was exposed to the culture and animated movies at a young age and always had an appreciation for Japan. But lately whenever I use the app to learn new words the ad for a premium membership comes up. I’ll say no thanks and try to press the learn new words button and the same message pops back up. This has struck me dead in my tracks as I was trying at least once a day to practice and made good distance in the hiragana alphabet. I’ve tried other apps and they’re not what I need right now. Many people think it’s a glitch since even I can still go past the launch pads on my school account/laptop. This app is great besides that setback, please try to fix it please

Annoyingly Effective. This is coming from someone who has studied Japanese in college. I decided to use this to review and hopefully learn some new things. If you already know a good amount of Japanese already just skip to Japanese 2. The Japanese at this level is still fairly basic but it provides a lot of Kanji to learn and vocabulary as well. I think the key part of this app that may benefit a lot of people is its heavy use of vocals, which includes *some* examples from native speakers as well. Most of the vocal examples are slow and chopped up which would help break things down for new learners, but your key examples of how you should speak come from the short clips of actual Japanese people. The greatest (and yet annoying) part of this app is just how much you review material. Every time you have a lesson where you learn something new, you will have like 2 lessons of review before you learn something else. I say it’s annoying because I already know a lot so I don’t feel like I need to review things a million times, but in all honesty this method drills the knowledge into your brain effectively. If you want to get the most out of this make sure you repeat back everything you hear so you can learn it faster and retain it. Solid app so far.

Extremely immersive with the best mix of exercises I’ve seen in a language app!. First, the level to which the lessons are immersive is impressive. After living in South Korea for two years, I know how important being immersed in the language and culture is. I really wanted to immerse myself again, even though I don’t live in Korea anymore. With Memrise, I now have a way to study bit by bit while feeling like I’m back in South Korea. For example, there are videos of all types of native speakers, some speaking slower or faster than others. This is incredibly helpful for building confidence in listening/comprehension (how many times have you studied on your own only to later listen to native speakers talk too fast for you to keep up?). Second, you learn important words and phrases, as well as important cultural words too, right off the bat. Third, the different types of exercises are exactly what you need to become fluent. My favorite exercise is the listening video where you have to tap a button whenever you hear a certain word or phrase. This is a more realistic way of learning than trying to know every single word someone says in the language you are learning. By allowing yourself to not stress about understanding everything right away and just focusing on identifying that one word or phrase at that time, you truly learn it well and also get better at context over time too. Thank you, Memrise!

Very beginner (Japanese). First impression when signing in and picking your language (Japanese in my case), I get two options: Basic & Advanced. I picked advanced since I’m at a N4-N3 level which is approaching intermediate, not advanced, but definitely not basic. Once selected, it directly takes you into a lesson without explaining what you’re going to learn. The first screen presents you with a vocabulary word and sounds fully turned on despite my volume rocker being turned off. Bad UX behavior, respect the users settings. That’s the second bad impression. In addition, the vocab presented is romanized spelling. I’d let it go if it was in Hiragana/Katakana without the Kanji but if you can’t read Hiragana/Katakana, you’re still at a very basic level, nowhere near advanced. Needless to say, I exited out of the course because that’s not doing anything for me. Then looking at the course outline you see in the overview, this whole course looks to be extremely beginner oriented. This won’t even get you to N5 level. So if you intend to learn Japanese and it’s your first exposure to it, maybe this app is ok. I can’t really tell because it’s too basic for me. If you’re looking for anything more advanced, the Japanese course is not for you. It would be helpful if they declared upfront the level of education you could expect.

Structured to help you memorize. I like that the app follows a technique so that you’re always learning new words while helping you to retain stuff you learned previously. If you take a break for too long then you have to review more which makes sense since you tend to forget things after long periods of not practicing. You can also omit words from the review that you’re 100% confident about so you can focus more on new content. It’s fun and easy because the app keeps track of the things you struggle to memorize and stresses more on it so you get it down quicker. You don’t have to turn back pages or highlight anything or remember where you left off. What’s also great about it, is you can choose which subjects to focus on to cater to your lifestyle or interests. I gave it four stars because I wish it had picture or situational references since I’m more of a visual learner and also since that’s how we all learned our very first language before we all knew how to read…for example, a picture of someone waving and saying 안녕하세요 would help me to recognize when I would say this and burn a picture in my mind to a word rather than having to memorize two different words that mean the same thing. In that case, we learn to “think” in the foreign language instead of our own…if that makes any sense.

My learning here has personality, and I see myself!. I’ve been trying everything that’s out there to teach me some needed words and interactive expressions. This app has helped me to fill an empty space in my language learning. I was slightly annoyed with how much time it took me to complete the first level, especially since I have been studying and practicing intensely for the past 8 months. My first college course was 10 years ago, and I’ve been using some fantastic programs to help me learn and speak. Memrise came at just the right moment for me, as I am anxious to launch into conversations with the many native speakers around me. I’m only on Mexican Spanish 2, and the phrases have been so fun! I can see myself expressing my own thoughts with my own personality in conversation. I’m practicing in my mind (and out loud) without using the app as well. I’m speeding through at this point because I already have a lot of knowledge and recent experience with Spanish learning. I’m certain that I’ll slow down eventually. When I compare the process to learning how to play the piano, this app uses melodic phrases rather than presenting a song one note at a time. I don’t know how I would like it as a day zero beginner, but I’ll find out as I venture into other languages. I’m certain it works best when used everyday. What I really like is that I can make my own flash cards, or I can keep grinding and let the app do that work for me. ¡Eso es maravilloso!

Getting better and better. I’ve been using Memrise for years.. I started way back when anyone could make a learning deck and almost left when they took that feature away and made it exclusively their own learning decks. And while I do wish they would in some way reincorporate that feature I am glad that I stayed (and became a pro member) because everything else they’ve done with the app keeps getting better and better. I love the new grammar learning sections so you’re actually learning grammar rules and not just memorizing vocabulary, and I really hope they expand that and add audio to it. I also really love the learning with locals sections, and I really hope they expand those as well. That’s probably the most effective thing around for hearing how a native speaker would actually say what you’re learning. All in all, this is one of the best language learning tools out there. I would (and do) choose it over duolingo anytime (especially seeing duolingos new model). Combining memrise with something like Michel Thomas audio, some native books and movies, and an app that connects you to native speakers, and you can learn a language from scratch to fluent in 6-12 months.

Revised Japanese is excellent!. I started using the Japanese module last year to supplement self-study, and it was frustrating. You only got hiragana, so words that are normally written in katakana looked wrong and were hard to read. Some kanji were introduced, but they weren’t really useful (e.g., tree, but no sentences using it). It’s almost always rude to address someone as “you,” but the module was full of sentences like “You look tired.” This has all been fixed, and I’m getting a lot out of it. They start with hiragana, and once you get the hang of that, they start throwing kanji at you for new vocabulary that’s normally written in kanji. It’s hard, but it’s a lot better than learning the words in hiragana and then having to relearn them in kanji. At level 16, you start learning katakana. They’ve also introduced names to use in place of “you” (e.g., “Ms. Riho looks tired”), which is the polite way to address people. The Japanese module is probably best for supplementing more-conventional study, and it will be perfect for someone who knows a little Japanese and wants to refresh or relearn it, such as someone who had a semester of Japanese in college years ago.

Solid learning app. I’ve tried several language-learning apps and Memrise is by far my favorite. It has an intuitive user interface and makes learning a language easy. In my opinion, the “Learn With Locals” feature is what really sets it sort from other platforms. Hearing a robotic voice read something is often worlds apart from how native speakers actually pronounce things, so hearing locals speaks gives me a much better feel of how words and sentences flow together. It also prepares me better for speaking with native speakers in real life. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is the “speaking practice” feature. It’s good, but the speech recognition definitely has room for improvement. There are times I’ve said things correctly, but it says it’s wrong- I’ve played my recorded voice and the demo voice right after each other and they sound exactly the same. I’ve even given it to my native-speaking friends and they can’t get it to accept the voice clip. It’s not all the time, but it’s usually at least one phrase each “session” of Speaking Practice.

A pretty effective tool. I have been using memrise in conjunction with Duolingo and a book set to learn Russian for a bit now. I’d totally give 5 stars, but there are a few issues, especially with the Russian course, that i feel need addressing. First of all, the way you learn the alphabet is a bit strange. I love how it gives you the character and the pronunciation, but sometimes in review, it gives you the sound of the letter and a few options in the English alphabet. For example, if there was a д sound, it would often just give me the choice of d instead of the character. This is a bit annoying since it doesn’t help me learn the alphabet, but rather makes me learn our alphabet, which I don’t really need reviewing on. I think it should at least incorporate the character, like show it alongside the sound button, or just have the character as an option. The app also doesn’t tel you what the characters are called, which is bad because if you only had the app, you wouldn’t be able to say what the character was, just the sound. Other than those alphabet learning issues, Memrise has definitely helped me with Russian, and I will definitely keep using it! Пака!

Pretty good but not flexible enough. Let me start out by saying I liked this app enough pay the subscription. It's a nice friendly app, and they have a lot of good content. That being said, I find it a pretty significant drawback that you have no control over how much repetition you get other than the "difficult words" – which more often than not represent times I was tired and misclicked. This feature would be a lot more useful if you could manually adjust the difficult words on the phone app as you can on the website, but feature parity is lacking here. Better, though, would be the ability to tell the app how much repetition you need both per data set and per word. For instance, for the Spanish vocab set I need far fewer repetitions in the app wants to give me, and for the Chinese set, I want way more. Even with in each language, there is variation by word – some Spanish words just don't click, and some Chinese words I've heard before or just seem natural. The lack of the sort of adaptability makes me not want to use the app for very long in a single session, or on consecutive days, because the practice feels extremely repetitive and not a good use of my time, even if I do nothing but "learn new words".

Good vocab builder. I’ve used Memrise for 2 languages for travel (Spanish and Korean) and one language for advanced proficiency (Japanese) and have generally found that, like all flash card apps, its utility varies a lot depending on the quality of the deck. Its lower level decks are generally good for drilling vocabulary, and in conjunction with other learning methods can be a good way to solidify basic vocabulary recognition. It is worth checking out, I think, as combining listening, reading, and spelling words is much more effective than standard flash card drilling. Some decks do not have clear translations, especially at advanced levels; more than once I’ve encountered a multiple choice question with duplicate answers. Oh, one other thing; it goes SLOW, especially at lower levels. Your mileage may vary on whether you appreciate that, but as far as I can tell there’s no real test-out feature that allows you to skip words you already know. I prefer to be thorough and take the lower levels even if I already know maybe 50-60% of the words, but this makes it VERY annoying to do that.

DOWNLOAD NOW. I am a Spanish teacher who is fluent in English and Spanish. I decided to take French lessons from Spanish to French, because in my opinion Spanish is closer to French then English is. The lessons from Spanish to French are PHENOMENAL! They offer literal translations too, which is super helpful for understanding French grammar. The lessons have a diverse cast of native speakers so you can hear REAL people speaking the language, and also hear the nuances in tone, expression, body language, and how the people move their mouths to form the words. The app is engaging, and teaches you how to actually learn a living, breathing language instead of pointless exercises with animations (like Duolingo does.) Thanks Memrise, for including courses for Spanish speakers learning other languages. I hope you guys add a Spanish-Portuguese course, given that Portuguese is even closer to Spanish than French is. También aprecio las lecciones gratis, y cuando paso más tiempo en esta app me encantaría comprar la versión avanzada aunque me va a costar jeje :) amor y besos

What I was missing with Duolingo - but too pricy. I love Duolingo and use it every day, but I find some languages on the app are better set up than others. When I started learning Danish, I kept using it as obsessively as I had with other languages, but I found that something was missing. Memrise fills in the gap with native speakers in brief clips, reinforcing the correct pronunciation I’d been struggling with mastering on the Duolingo app. It’s also so helpful to see phrases and words in repetition on this app, which helps enormously with memorizing new words. I’m going to use both of these apps in tandem and I’m extremely excited to start using Memrise as part of my daily routine and to try out other languages on the app as well. I’m only on level two but I love it so far! EDIT: However, I think it is incredibly pricy for the limited amount of words that are available. The highest level will get you some elementary vocabulary, but 60 a year or 9 dollars a month is just far too expensive for something that does not get you in depth understanding of the language. It is set up incredibly well but until the developers offer a higher level of fluency and additional levels I can’t imagine myself paying for it, which is very disappointing.

Great Platform. Needs vocabulary improvement.. I’ve been using this app for the past 2-3 months consistently. I’m nearly done with Russian 1. Overall, it’s great software, intuitive, and it makes memorization seem easy. My biggest criticism is the vocabulary. In the Russian 1 course, we learn about 400 words. However, these words are not the most common words that new Russian speakers would be using. For example, we learn the word for caviar long before we have learned the word for bread. What word do you think is more commonly used? I know caviar is popular is Russia, but personally, I think the latter. I wish a little more thought was put in to the curriculum, so students would be learning more applicable vocabulary. I find that in a lot of my Russian conversations, I am lacking knowledge of some basic words, while I know words that are a less commonly used. I would still recommend this app. For $40, you get your money’s worth it terms of the quality and utility of this program. I just wish they put a little more thought into the Russian curriculum. Hopefully they will improve the vocabulary selection in the future to help out new Russian speakers.

I used to love this app. True to its name, I used to truly feel inspired and in awe when the rocket ship flew higher and higher as I progressed through each course. It was fun and fresh, especially as I was using it while studying abroad during the summer of 2017. The flower design and mechanic was interesting, the alien buddy that you leveled up was great, and the color palette made me keep coming back without any feelings of monotony or boredom. It’s really a shame Memrise had to sell out to a consulting company for a new, more “mature” design. Because of it, MemRISE truly isn’t the same team and app it was during its peak. I no longer feel like I’m rising as I learn, and I just want to close the app as soon as I open it. Nothing in this current design even faintly acknowledges its historical design and “rise” concept. It became a hollow shell of its old self. Bring back the old design Memrise. Your downloads numbers should evidence enough of this huge mistake. You alienated your old user base during its peak and you lost my trust as a company when you doubled down on keeping the redesign despite seeing the obvious results in your download numbers. You chose your own fate. It’s never too late to turn back. Or maybe it is now.

Bugs make it unusable. It was my favorite language app and I started a subscription, after each update it became progressively worse. It might be fine for Romance languages, but for Tibetan there are endless glitches, marking correct words wrong and not being able to type the alphabet accurately, make it unusable. I wish they’d fix it, it used to be a great app. I keep coming back every 5-6 months to see if the bugs have been fixed. Oh well, it gets progressively worse as they charge more, you get less until it’s unusable. They say they have to charge crazy high prices to keep creating content, yet they offer less content and the app has become progressively more unreliable. Lol. Maybe go back to charging less and restore earlier content that worked? UPDATE: Developer customer service tip—tone deaf copy paste replies are worse than no reply. Now everyone reading reviews can see how often you use this meaningless reply. It shows you don’t read and respond to users’ suggestions or complaints. You are most definitely not “the same Memrise” I knew and loved. Did you read the bit where I said Memrise is no longer functioning for the non Romance language I’m learning? LOL.

amazing. this app is great! I have been looking far and wide for an app to learn Icelandic on, and I want to become fluent. The audio clips from natives are very helpful, as are the different types of learning on the app. ( typing, selecting the correct audio, etc.) I have not used Memrise for long, but can already see this is the app for me. I have not paid for premium but the regular features are awesome. I do think that maybe downloading courses to access offline should be included with regular though. I only have one suggestion: have slowed down clips as an option if you can’t quite catch what they’re saying, as the natives do tend to talk rather quickly. Or have a phonetic spelling of each word, especially as Icelandic is a rather difficult and complex language in which the same letter can make multiple sounds ( of course, the same can be said of most languages). Thank you developers for this beautiful, extensive, and useful app!! 10/10 would absolutely recommend.

Great Japanese Course—But No Katakana?. When it was on sale I purchased a year-long subscription to the app and I’ve been really happy with it so far! It has a lot of great features and is intuitive to use but there are a few things I’ve been wondering about. I majored in Japanese in college so using the Japanese II course in the app has been mostly review, which is fine, and I’m excited to get to Japanese III to see more new material, but so far the app has included no usage of katakana, and has only been teaching kanji separate from the vocab and grammar taught in the app. Ultimately words written in katakana are never practically written in hiragana, and while it’s been handy learning the kanji individually, I guess I just hope the app begins integrating both in more fully with the vocabulary and grammar being taught. I’d like to renew my subscription for next year if it seems there’ll be more to learn from it, but I suppose I’m wondering if a developer has any information on if I just haven’t gotten far enough in the lessons to see katakana and kanji become actually integrated or if there’s a plan for that in the future and if a Japanese IV is perhaps in the works? So for anyone who’s looking for an app with a good Japanese course, this is definitely the best I’ve seen, but it still feels like there’s an amount missing that you see available intermediate Japanese text and workbooks.

Please make other options available. I am a new 18 year old college student and wanted to be able to learn new languages on my own time and this app looked promising. For the most part it is. I can say that i have learned some helpful words and romanization for the words, however, as amazing as this app is I find it incredibly frustrating that I cannot proceed without paying absurd amounts of money per month. I signed up for a free trial which in my opinion should mean that i have free reign of the app for the duration of a week. Unfortunately I am only able to take the first lessen, everything else is locked and if I wish to move on an add pops up on my screen to pay for the pro version. I understand that it is a way for the makers to get paid for the app but if the app is free then I should be able to believe that it will stay free. As an educational app that I know many people are using for their own benefit and growth there should be a way for individuals to use the app without having to pay so much. Even if that means that they can only do a lesson each day at least they can proceed to learn, and if they want to do more like an entire section then they could pay a small fee around about 5 to 10 dollars. I just find it slightly unfair that this app is shown as a free learning app and after being on it for 10 minutes it wants you to pay 20, 30, 50 dollars. The app is great but that main factor is what makes me dislike it immensely.

Awesome Language Learning App!. I’ve been learning Spanish in school and fluent in Punjabi and thought that the idea of learning a new language was so cool! Being able to speak in a language not everyone knows seems so amazing and this app is so much fun! I’ve tried apps like duo lingo and it does have the same goal and format but Memrise is truly the best fitting language app for me! You can see actual people from all over speaking the language you want to learn (I’m currently learning french!) I haven’t even gotten far enough in the app to say “this is amazing” in French but it’s absolutely awesome, it’s not constantly bugging you to download their premium version which basically upgrades to features like seeing real life lessons from people speaking the language you’re learning! Not only does it help you to speak the language but it also helps to write and memorize in the language your learning which is something I don’t see very much in other apps, I’d definitely download this app if you’re someone who wants in depth lessons on learning your preferred languages! 10/10! Au Revoir :)

Good, but not perfect. I’ve used Memrise to learn Japanese, and I actually liked the older version more when it came to memorizing hiragana and katakana because there were submitted ways to differentiate similar characters/strokes. This current version I only use free stuff, but I wish ya’ll could make when you end a review, if you get a vocab wrong, please have the word in the list either in furigana or romanji. It’s annoying just to show kanji because in Japanese many kanji have different sounds, and it’s irritating just to go to different chapters and hunt down the list I want to find the word to correctly memorize it. Another thing, please make the difficult mark be able to disappear in the free version. It’s annoying when I get one word wrong, it marks it difficult, and then it won’t leave no matter how many times afterwards I get it right. As far as course goes, its good, but it doesn’t always review old vocab, so unless you’re actively trying to speak or write/read, its easy to casually forget. Another thing is occasionally it will mark a correct answer wrong, like my answer and the “right” answer are literally the same so it’s aggravating when its saying its wrong when its not

Choose this one. I have downloaded and tried all the Spanish apps and this one is by far the best. There are several things I like about it: 1) It has lots of repetition and review of previous lessons, which is really what you need to learn a language. I have taken a Spanish class and used apps and they want to move you along so fast that you forget what you learned before. 2) The quality of the videos with local people is better and holds your attention more than any of the other apps, and gives you multiple different dialects to hear and the body language that goes along with it. This is probably the most natural way to learn other than actually being with people speaking Spanish. 3) They give you the basic meaning translation and the literal translation which I really appreciate. Even Spanish textbooks will not do this which I find frustrating. They want you to memorize the meaning without actually understanding the words you are saying. I feel if you want to understand a language you need to know exactly what you are saying. Thank you! Nobody elae does this. 4) The subscription fee is reasonable, and they don’t constantly harass you. They give you a good sample before they ask you to subscribe. There are lots of other apps that charge more and are way less quality. I am really happy I found this one.

Total randomness. It’s not the worst language learning app but sometimes the format is frustrating. Memrise does a good job of introducing people to language that actual people use but the format of the lessons is all over the place and sometimes the length of the modules can be frustrating. In some cases you will have a 30 second module which is fine but the they follow it up with something that’s 15 minutes. I don’t mind doing 15 minutes of language learning but sometimes I do memrise because I have 5-10 minutes and want to study as a refresher. I understand that learning languages takes time but breaking up their bigger learning modules into smaller chunks would be helpful. It’s really just frustrating for everything to be completely random and to have no real control over how long it takes to complete separate modules. Another that makes it difficult to like is the pronunciation portions which are inordinately difficult and time consuming honestly the only reason I continue to use this app is because I signed up for it on a discount and don’t want to waste all of my money otherwise the app isn’t very good and I recommend at the very least not paying for it.

Disappointed. I absolutely love the way Memrise has set itself up. I have tried many language learning courses and none have been better than this one! Memrise gives an amazing learning experience that makes time fly by, I learned almost 300 new words in the two weeks that I started. Although this might not be the platform everyone is looking for, it was perfect for me. The points you get from learning more and more, and reviewing words makes it a competition to see who can get the most on the leaderboard. Memrise put some type of magic in this app, and I would strongly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn a language fast! However, I switched from computer learning on Memrise to on my phone and I am highly disappointed. On the website it allows you to do everything without having to purchase anything. The app however is the opposite and it is near to impossible to learn on a mobile device without having to pay monthly or yearly. I understand that they need to make money off of it, but the computer version gives free services.

Love this app!. I started off like many people using Duolingo for my language learning. While I like Duolingo for learning and brushing up on my Spanish, when it came time to dabble in Korean, the app was a hot mess with learning it. It started off with Hangul (the Korean characters) and needless to say I was confused from the jump. I downloaded Memrise to learn Korean and I absolutely fell in love with how it progresses you with the lessons. I bought the pro plan because I am serious about learning Korean. With a few other side learning materials to learn Hangul, I found learning Korean fun and ways with Memrise. I’ve been using it for about 5 months off and on, can I speak fluently? No. Can I read Hangul and recognize certain phrases? Yes! It was a big help for me when I went to Korea last month. I will be renewing my membership and continuing my studies using this app. The only thing I can suggest is an option where you can slow down the pronunciation of words and phrases. And maybe add an official Hangul course to start off with. Other than that, great app.

I like the idea of the app but I’m finding it a struggle.. I’m trying to learn Russian. I liked the idea of the app when I tried it out. I liked the gamification, how it offers more materials than Duolingo in terms of grammar and things like that. I also thought it would help me get comfortable with Cyrillic. So I bought the Black Friday sale for the annual plan. However, I am now regretting that decision as the words are getting more difficult and I have been using the app daily over more time. I wish the speakers said the new words once in native/natural speed, then broke them down and slowed down. It’s hard to tell if I am getting the right pronunciation, and even harder to memorize. I find myself supplementing the lessons with other sources because while future lessons provide ample review, there is no way to repeat past lessons. I also wish cultural context was provided. It gives you extremely casual versions of words first, without explaining the difference between formalities. I’ll have to try it for awhile until my subscription runs out and maybe my opinion will change, but I wish I could get a refund.

Community Content will be hobbled. I’ve enjoyed and paid for this app for a while, but I’ve just been told that all community-created courses — which is to say, the vast majority of the courses available, and the majority of the courses that I use — will be removed from the app shortly and placed on a website with far less functionality. This is extremely disappointing. I am hurt that MemRise will remove these useful courses while I and many others are in the middle of learning from them. I am not convinced that the few remaining MemRise-created courses are high enough quality to justify the continued use of the app. ETA — while I do not appreciate the response sent to my review, which falsely implies that the Decks website was originally designed to have anywhere near the functionality of MemRise (as their announcements made clear, it was not), I do appreciate that they have listened to the customer outrage over this decision and made a better decision. Decks will now be designed to have an app with offline mode (a crucial feature for many users, such as myself) and community courses will be able to remain on MemRise while the app is being developed. Changing my review to 5 stars.

Great potential, needs some work. Let me start off by saying this app has some amazing and groundbreaking features that you would have a difficult time finding on other apps or material. I have had the full, paid version of this app for around one and a half years. I was already fluent in English and Spanish so I decided to take a change with this app to learn a language that was not a Romance language. I took the course for Russian and later Arabic. What I learned from taking these two somewhat impractical and difficult languages was that the app is stylized in a very “Romance language” way of learning. They teach in more of the style of “here is a phrase, now memorize it” (hence the app’s name) it is not often that it gets explained why I’m conjugating certain words or including/leaving out other certain words or phrases. It is a very good app for learning basics of a language but it lacks the context that learning a language in person creates. All in all it is a great app and I would recommend getting the full edition especially if you are interested in learning multiple languages.

Addictive & Informative. I've only been using this app for a few hours. I am mostly self-taught and I think this app is good for those who are just starting out or are a bit familiar with the language. It seems to be a good tool to reinforce independent study. One thing I would suggest is that for languages with a different writing system, it's better not to rely on romanized spelling of the sounds. In my experience, it's much easier to train your ear to the sounds of each character if you aren't using the English characters as a crutch, since in a lot of cases, the sounds have no absolute English equivalent. I haven't gotten very far into the levels, so I don't know if this changes along the way, but that is the only negative I have found so far. I'm really enjoying this app!! *update* After initial introduction to the writing system/alphabet, the romanization is abandoned, which is great for general memorization of the characters and training your ear to the sounds. I also think picture visuals would be helpful in remembering verbs and vocabulary.

One of my favorite apps. I use three language apps in total. Memrise, Rosetta Stone, and Duolingo. Memrise is by far my favorite. I’ve used them for almost three years now. I liken it to teaching a child with word/item correlation. That flash card heavy curriculum is what makes it efficient. The best part is the videos of native speakers that speak in different regional accents, cadences, and tones. This was particularly noticeable in the French language course and made it easy to understand French at work spoken between coworkers from Cameroon, Paris, Togo, and Haiti. I’m currently studying the Spanish language course, and it’s just as efficient. My only caveat is the quality of the “homemade” videos audio in the Spanish course. Some videos are louder than others, some are professionally recorded, and some sound like they were recorded using a doorknob. This wasn’t something I experienced with French. But it requires my to raise the volume repeatedly then lower it which is distracting for a long study session. It’s still very much a five star app, and I know Memrise is always pushing and making improvements.

Useful review, NO LONGER FREE.. I’m only writing this review because of recent events. Normally I wouldn’t write a review if an app was good or bad. When I first got this app, I had the intention of learning Japanese. Then I switched to Korean. I really enjoyed this app for the learning process. This would help you learn common phrases. This app was amazing compared to others and especially duolingo. I was satisfied with what was provided. This app would always ask “On a scale from 1-10, how would you recommend this app to your friends?” I would always put 10, because I really thought they would enjoy it and find it helpful. Recently I recommended this app to a friend. She really enjoyed it and found it useful. When she wanted to move on to the next lesson, she was bombarded with ads to purchase plans. So she deleted the app. Now she got the app again, thinking it was just an apparent bug, and was fixed. She comes to find that you completely need to purchase a plan, unlike before. THIS IS ONLY FOR NEW USERS. Which is completely unfair. We got this app because classes are expensive and other apps aren’t as helpful. If we wanted to purchase plans, we could have just gotten Rosetta Stone.

AWESOME app, but where are the chatbots?. I use memrise to learn additional things and to secure my knowledge, and it is great so far. Since I study German at school, I have no problem with understanding the grammar. However, some of my friends are having some trouble with the grammar. I would recommend getting the pro, because you can access many things such at speed review, learning offline, listening with locals. But even if you don’t get the pro that is still fine, because you still can learn a lot. I used it for 1 month without the pro, and I found it so fun and useful that I got the pro. I AM OBSESSED AND IN LOVE WITH THIS APP! WWW: speed review (my personal favorite, good for recap by storing it into long term memory, good for when you don’t have a lot of time), improves pronunciation (you get to listen to locals pronouncing the word or phrase) AWESOME APP IN GENERAL! EBI: 1) The explore picture section needs improvements, sometimes it gets wrong. 2) My streaks don’t save when I use offline learning, which is quite sad. 3) Where are the chatbots? I can’t seem to find them. NEED HELP!

Arabic lacking greatly. I was enjoying the alphabet lessons, and felt progress and motivation, so I paid for a year subscription. But the problem started when the completion of the alphabet lessons led me directly to vocabulary such as thank you, good morning, etc., with no lessons on actually reading chunks (morphemes) of letter combinations. At this point I’m only surviving in the vocabulary section by memorizing what shape words look like, without knowing how the words actually phonetically read out. I have learned to read and write Mandarin, so I’m experienced enough to identify a bad program when I see one. Since each Arabic letter has 3 forms (initial, medial, final), it’s too much of a leap to go straight into vocabulary without some phonetics lessons. A bridge needs to be built to solve the lessons’ poor transition from alphabet to vocabulary words. The Arabic alphabet is an abjad, meaning many vowels aren’t actually written. The program made no attempt to introduce and teach this. While in the alphabet section, the app asked me how I would rate Memrise in terms of grammar instruction. This survey question belongs in the grammar section, not in the alphabet section where I haven’t even had exposure to grammar yet. Whatever is available in the Pro upgraded version can’t make up for a poor foundation. I’m going to apply for a refund.

I knew I'd like it when I first saw it.. I was recommended to try out Talk To Me In Korean! which was not a pleasant experience to try and navigate it or understand the words because they use an automated voice to pronounce the words, whereas Memrise uses actual people to pronounce the words. So right now I'm trying to learn Korean and Arabic because I feel like those are two challenging languages for someone whose first language is English and has tried French (with little success) and Spanish (which came easy to me). The only problem I really have is that I want to go back and try words that I don't feel sure on and I can't, or I just haven't found the way to do that yet. If I do find it, I'll be even happier than I already am. Also, being able to learn languages in terms of how the words and letters/characters are pronounced and also what they look like (if they don't use romanized characters--like with English letters) is really nice in this app, so thanks again Memrise for making it easier to learn languages!

Memory Power. Memrise uses spaced repetition in order to help you memorize a word or phrase, as well as it has an option for mnemonics, which I think is great. I love memrise and I’ve been using it for 2 years with pro membership for learning languages. Nonetheless, there are some things I really hate. For example, some people cheat making ridiculous amounts of points and that makes me feel mad because the points I make I put the effort and time for them. So I think it’ll be a good idea to have limited amounts of points you can make in a day, something reasonable and human-capable. Another issue I have is I’m a pro member and I can’t even review a general course with pronunciation, learn with locals, and listening skills. That was something that was available before and not anymore. It only works with individual lessons. So, why paying a membership if I can’t even make use of those features in a broader way? When I review words in the website, it gives me +150 points per word/phrase whereas in the phone it only gives me +5, and I think that’s ridiculous. It should be even, doesn’t it? A year ago I gave 5 stars to the app, but now I’ll give it just 4 because there are things to improve.

An incredible app. This app is simply stunning not only in its effectiveness but also simply the way it looks and feels when you use it. I used to use Duolingo only and now I simply use that app to compliment this one! Another great aspect would be that you don’t have to necessarily pay to learn, you can learn everything you need for free but at the same time you can purchase the premium membership (a membership, might i add, that is definitely worth it) so as to enhance your experience and learn faster. I have been referring my friends to use this app and they all seem to like it. Personally I have been using it for French for maybe a few months now, and i simply love the program, and I plan to use it to learn german starting around the new year. I was also wondering if perhaps you could add in some more languages, my key example being Hindi, as both myself and friends (and I’m sure many others who use this app) would be thrilled to see more languages added. So to put it simply, everyone I know who uses this app as well as myself simply adore it, and want to thank, and congratulate you, on your tremendous effort you have put into it, so as to help us all learn, and better ourselves.

Absolutely love this app but what’s with the update?. I have been using Memrise for a couple years now and fell in love with it immediately. I had been studying Nihongo (Japanese) since I was young but never got to finish learning so this was an awesome way to refresh my memory and teach myself again. Anyways, it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to sit down and study with the app and I just picked it up again tonight but am sort of uncomfortable with the ad pop ups, not for any other reason than just not wanting to click either option. I love that you guys promote another version of your app that you have to pay for, but putting a rude or “sassy” option to close the ad is honestly annoying. I had a lot of respect for this app, still sorta do, but I feel like it’s now lost a bit of its approachable class for all ages and kinds of people. Why not leave the option “No, Thanks. Maybe Later” cause not everyone has that much money to spare and having to choose “No, I don’t like people” or “Nah, I like to stay in my own little bubble 😒” is sort of condescending and juvenile. Other than that, the app is good, but now I feel like it’s directed towards younger millennials and not the masses. It’s not that big of a deal, just annoying.

Memrise. Very good language learning app! Working through Japanese and plan on hitting Russian and German at some point. The $99 for life cost seems well worth it, with other language learning programs costing twice that much for just one language. Great value, when you think about it! I’m using a Kanji-learning app to supplement my Japanese studies, as the rite-memorization method used for Memrise doesn’t help with actually LEARNING the characters. Being able to draw them with this other tool is helping my comprehension tremendously, though I suspect this is an issue solely with languages that have a VASTLY different writing system. My only true gripe with Memrise (and it’s really a problem with other language programs as well) is that it’s great to memorize phrases, but it doesn’t really help you learn to adapt the sentence structure to use additional vocabulary. You can infer some of that, but finding a way to work this into the program would set Memrise well above its competitors! Also, I really liked the space theme... can you add an option to go back to that at user’s preference? The new color scheme makes my eyes bleed! XD Thanks!

Level 2 French is very different from level 1. I loved Level 1 French and thus purchased an annual subscription. Once I got to level 2, the quality and subject selection became much lower and inappropriate. French is notorious for having formal (polite) and informal ways of addressing people. As a visitor, you will be using polite or formal way of addressing everyone (from wait stuff to taxi drivers). Level 2 seems to be focusing on informal way talking to people. And they introduced party topic. As a foreigner, you will not be invited to any parties. Maybe if reach level B or higher and come to France more frequently, you might get an invite. That is why I think having this topic in level A2 is useless. If you address someone you do not know in informal way, you would be considered rude and very likely to get rude response back or no response. Since verbs are conjugated in French, the same verb would have different pronunciation in formal vs informal way of speaking. So learning informal phrases are not doing me much good. Also, I found some translations to English a bit awkward and missing punctuation. I am frustrated by this learning experience.

Best Learning App!!!. Memrise is really good! It has similar learning styles with other apps, the flash card style memorization, but it also has audio and the “robots” saying the words sound very human, they are male and female voices so you can catch some of the nuances of each. One of the best features is it has video of natives saying the words. You can keep repeating the video until you have really understood the words. This helped immensely in my Japanese lessons. The interface is really good too, easy to use, intuitive for practicing specific things, you can focus on just listening, spelling/writing/reading even your own pronunciation. They recently added video of writing the hiragana and katakana. Now I can see the stroke order, and practice reading people’s handwriting and have more ideas of what it’s gonna look like on a billboard or sign here in Japan. I’m really really pleased with this app. Oh, and to top it off, you can download the lessons so they will be available offline. I really can study anywhere. I thought 60$ for the year was reasonably priced, but I was bummed I didn’t see the 100$ unlimited, I think I would have liked to have bought that instead. This app beats the others, in my opinion by a long shot. You have to download all the free ones and practice each just to get a similar well roundedness that Memrise has, and then you still won’t get the most useful feature, the videos. I would recommend it to everyone trying to learn Japanese!!! Go Memrise!!!

Best app for language learning. I love languages and in my opinion this is the best app there is for learning vocabulary - and let’s face it, learning vocabulary is the most important part of language learning but the most tedious. Not anymore with this app!! It feels like playing a game, but a game you will not feel guilty about playing :) I’ve used it so far for German, some Mandarin Chinese and some Italian and can only recommend it. The videos they’ve added with locals speaking the phrases are amazing. Of course I don’t recommend this as your ONLY source of language learning if you want to learn a language fast - that requires a combination of speaking face to face with someone, reading/translating longer texts, and maybe listening to a podcast / songs and watching some movies / videos in the language, but for the “annoying part” aka vocabulary learning and memorization, throw away your flash cards and vocabulary lists and just get this app :) I promise you it’s waaay more fun. Also, if you’ve got only 5-20min a day to learn a language I think this is the most effective way to use those minutes because it makes sure that what you DO learn in that short time actually sticks to your memory.

Mui Bien - gracious. This is an awesome app!!!! Maui easy to learn Spanish in a quick and easy to understand way that is very fun ! I love the videos of the native speakers ( so cute to see them speaking in their native language and having a big smile on their faces! ) I been really wanting to learn Spanish and tried using Rosetta Stone, but it is soooo expensive and being a full time college student I couldn't afford it. To have this app available right on my phone it is so cool to be able to work on a few words as I get time throughout the day! I purchased the PRO version to have all the available extras and it was mui worth it !! I really really loved the section where it has me practice typing words and then sentences in Spanish ! Favorite and most helpful app I have EVER purchased ! When I graduate I am so excited that I will now be able to speak to my Spanish clients in their own language - maybe not quite fluent but understandable to communicate and I am mui confident that I will be fluent in a mui short time ! Thank you so much for such an enjoyable and fun way to learn a skill that will be so helpful to me DAILY as I work to help those in my community as a social worker ! Gracious!

Missing Grammar and Writing. Memrise is a great app in a lot of ways, but I’m learning Japanese, and they use a whole new writing system. It would be great if you added in a writing section to practice our kanji, because if we’re just looking at it and selecting a picture or two, we’re not really practicing the writing. This goes for Chinese and other languages that don’t use the Latin script as well. There is also no way to learn grammar. Not many languages have the exact same word order as English. Please add in these sections and I will rate it five stars.

Hate the new look. The new look of Memrise is really disappointing. For language learning apps I think Memrise is better than any! I have learnt a lot in a short amount of time. But I'm really sad to find it's changed it's look. It used to be fun, game-like and quirky. The game like appearance made learning a language less intimidating and more fun. The new look is awful - it's bland, generic and it's blandness and genericness makes r hard to navigate and unpleasant to use. They've lost a big draw card of something that made them unique, and I suppose they did this in order to "fit in". Really unfortunate.

Love it. I only just started. But so far best learning app I know. Not only will I learn words and to speak a different language but also hear it from actual people to understand accents as well. I tried on other apps. And after hearing some words from real people I still didn’t know what they said as it’s slightly different from the AI voices. UNTIL NOW! Only problem I might have that I haven’t run into yet is the monthly payment thing. So far as a free app it’s amazing. I’m just a bit worried that there will be a limit and it’ll just stop working until I pay. But so far so good

Great tool to help memorising new words, but there are bugs.... The latest Christmas has a serious bug. The input field is hidden by iOS keyboard if letter bank is not used. Please fix this as soon as possible! I’d also like a feature to allow users to adjust review algorithms for each course, as I find words in some languages are harder to remember and would prefer them to be reviewed more frequently. Even for each courses, I find the review intervals seem to be set for young people, who on average has a better retention rate than older people like me.

Awesome app. Great app. I’ve always put off learning languages because I’m good at reading but certain stuff words I read I won’t know how the correct pronunciation. With this app not only does it teach you the spelling of what you learn it shows you correct pronunciation with native speakers so you can get the subtle parts right and even reviews your pronunciation for you. So rather then just learning words hoping for the best you learn to spell, pronounce and read sentences and it’s so simple and if it doesn’t sink in the first time you can review anytime. It also stores phrases and words you have difficulty with so you can go back to them

It’s a nice app. I’m actually reading hiragana from 15 minutes using the app. It loses a star because rather than have a seamless transition to all of the free items it freezes with the pay to play and tells you you can’t go forward. Playing around with a few buttons got me to a page where I could move forward, thankfully. They don’t give you the information you need regarding what you CAN use so you are left floundering a bit. Being able to move forward and learn more in a day is useful. I’ll just have to wait and see if they have a revise what you’ve learned function. After all it wouldn’t do any good to learn a lot on Monday and forget it all by Friday.

Enjoying it so far.... The app is very educational and teaches languages in a way that seems easy to understand for a variety of ages. Although I am enjoying it, when my free trial is up, I probably won’t bother paying for the app. I would like to see Memrise change their app to completely free because it’d be one of the only free ones and certainly one of the best. If the app was free it would definitely be the app I’d want to use. That’s my only complaint for the app. That would be the best update for the best app. Keep it up Memrise team :)

Good but all-over-the-place. I love this approach and its content. However the learning steps are all over the place. One minute I’m learning “hello” “goodbye” “please” etc, the next I’m suddenly learning more complex grammar then flip back without warning into simple vocabulary. I can’t tell where I’m up to and whether I’m following a logical pathway - it just seems random in its progession through the language course. That said I am definitely brushing up on the language by using the app.

Best language app. Dear memorise team, First off, I love the app, it’s the best one I have come across so far. Have learnt so much from it, maybe even more than from my tutor, but alas I have a bone to pick. Your recent updates have caused more issues than they have fixed. To be honest I didn’t see any issues before, but now the app closes down half way through a lesson or before I even start the lesson. Please fix this as soon as possible, as it it stopping me from learning at the pace this app has allowed me to learn in the past. Thank you for your time

Mems are really useful. Previously I’ve used other language learning apps and had to do the work of the mems by myself in my head which was quite difficult but now it’s all here for me it’s a lot easier. The app also provides many chances for learning a lot of other languages which I’ve had a difficult experience trying to find elsewhere. My only issue is, when I first attempted to get the app it came across as you had to pay to do anything which really confused me. Altogether this app has helped me a lot with my vocabulary and for that I’m thankful

Pretty great. I'd appreciate more options for learning items, as well as the option of viewing multimedia lessons. A complaint, when typing answers, the lowercase 'l' and the uppercase 'I' look exactly the same, as they do here. This is very annoying when the word is (apparently) spelled correct, as you cannot see the error. Also, when I am viewing the leaderboard, sometimes when I switch away from the 'week' leaderboard the app suddenly crashes. Otherwise, I love this app.

Just a point to bear in mind. The app is fine, but the company is shady. I tried to purchase a lifetime membership during a 50% off offer. My card payment wasn’t accepted through iTunes despite having enough £££ to cover the cost. I tried a credit card through iTunes. Again, payment didn’t go through. I logged on to Memrise on my computer, same issue with both my debit and credit cards not being accepted. Memrise app unlocked the full membership, but didn’t charge my cards; I screenshot everything just in case. After 30 days my premium stopped working, I sent all the screenshots to Memrise as this seemed to be an issue on their end. They didn’t honour the discount and instead told me to keep an eye on their page as they will have another sale soon. Not very user-pro rated.

Love it, fantastic, value-rich app. This app really is fantastic, it’s clear that it was designed and executed with care and effort, with genuine concern for using methods that stand out above competitors. Love it and will keep using for as long as I continue to gain value from it. There aren’t many apps out there that are worth paying fees for, and some people seem to think that quality should always magically come for free. But for me, it’s definitely worth it, well done guys.

Fun and easy to learn. I’ve been using Memrise for a little while now and signed up for the subscription and really enjoy it. It’s great being able to hear native speakers and how things would be naturally said, instead of textbook conversation. They also give short videos that are scenarios of when the words would be used that are super helpful.

A waste of money, complete rip-off.. I think this app is amazing, and has good potential for catching the eye of thousands of language learners, if not more. I love the way it teaches you, but is also considerate of people forgetting what they’ve learnt. But unfortunately, this app has one large flaw. The subscription. Now I’m perfectly aware that the app creators worked hard to perfect this app, and need payment. But I would honestly rather Memrise to be constantly showing ads than a $100 dollar subscription! It wouldn’t be so bad to pay a smaller fee, or even just pay a few dollars for the app, but having to pay $100 dollars to learn is ridiculous, and I don’t care how many discounts you try to throw upon me. Next year I’m going to be taking French as a subject, and I wanted to get a head start. I immediately fell in love with this app and how helpful it was, until I discovered that you had to pay $100 dollars for the complete learning experience. And that was only for a year! It’s a complete rip-off. You should be encouraging people to learn, not put them off with a disgustingly priced subscriptions! If you read this, I thank you for your time. If you try to solve this, I greatly appreciate your effort more than you could know. Thank you. -An Unhappy User (for now?)

simply awesome. ★彡. This app has helped me SO much with learning multiple languages. The design is aesthetically pleasing and every part of the app is easy to access (+ the point system is great and feels very rewarding) Even with the free version, there are several tools to assist with progressing through a wide range of languages and topics. Memrise is easy, fun, informative and by far the best educational app that I have used so far. Hopefully, there will be more courses in the future so everybody can continue their adventure for the language they are exploring! ♥︎ Massive Thanks to The Memrise Team! ♡ Just a teeny-tiny suggestion for a future update: It would be super awesome to be able to edit our Memrise profile within the app rather than going to the website, although this is barely a problem at all!

Only 1 flaw!. I really enjoyed this app. It really takes it's time to make sure you thoroughly understand each letter/character in the alphabet of whatever language you're learning. Unlike Duolingo, though it that app is helpful in other ways, I feel like Memrise does a better job of educating you and making sure you understand even if it is not in physical form and not assisting you directly. The only flaw I find about this app is that so many useful modes are locked away for only members. This is understandable however, how else are you supposed to gain money? Though I find that if some of these modes were to be unlocked for all to use, I would definitely rate this app 5-stars. Thank you for reading! I hope this helps

This is pretty fine. I downloaded this app like a week ago. I’m in a Japanese class at school and I just wanted to help myself get better. It’s a pretty great app honestly I’ve used it probably twice a day every day and it quite fun to use. Not only that but the free part of it is good which is always and bonus and it allows you to take more than one corse at a time which is cool. I’m just testing it out so far but I’m considering using this on a daily bases to help me study. Great app keep up the good work!!!

Just another pay to play. Memrise is great app. The way the lessons are set out and executed is honestly better than any other language app I’ve used. It also teaches helpful phrases instead of just random words, and it’s taught me quite a bit in just a few days. So why only one star? Well, if you read the title, you’ll know. You can’t progress past LEVEL TWO of the lessons without paying over $100. Yes, I get it. Developers need to earn money somehow. But really? We can only do two lessons before we have to pay? That’s really dumb. Especially the price, which will turn off most people. Why not just put ads on the app? As long as they don’t come up every 5 seconds, most people are okay with ads. Or at least make it so that we can still do the lessons, but we get something extra (like more, personalised lessons) if we buy the subscription. Look, if you’re willing to buy the subscription when it goes on sale or something, go for it. It’s a really helpful app. But if not, I recommend going back to Duolingo before he kidnaps your family.

Disappointing. I really loved this app in the beginning. It kept track of words I struggled with and kept including those words in the little practice sessions. It wasn’t needy like Duolingo, it doesn’t make you do everything from scratch again if you miss a few days. Then, I finished the first section and discovered that the only way to continue was to fork out quite a bit of money for a subscription. There’s no free option. I understand that the developers would like to get paid for their hard work, but I would much rather watch ads as I simply don’t have money to spare. Duolingo has both free and paid versions, why isn’t that the case here? It’s a real shame. If Memrise does ever include a free option, I would definitely use it.

Where is the old memrise. I’ve had alotof fun learning French with memrise and I love it more than Duolingo. I’m just wondering what happened to the old memrise where you could learn all things with the same methods. I was learning capital cities, astrology , maths, biology. I can’t find another app like it. Please tell me that will come back at one stage. I would pay to be able to have access to such lessons again.

Pros and cons. I really love using this app especially if your using something like Duolingo as well because leaning two different ways it better than one tho I do find that i get lost in The menus sometimes i also don’t like the fact that you can’t retake pictures in explore mode so if you took a blurry shot because you didn’t stay steady you can’t retake it I also don’t like that you have to pay for almost all the lessons but you do have to make money somehow I guess I think I would recommend this

Official courses not free anymore.. The app's very useful, however whilst the download page says that it's the optional extras that are part of the pro membership, after a couple of days, without warning the official language courses become locked and require a pro membership. It seems the unofficial community-made courses can still be accessed, though naturally the quality of those vary. I went on the discussion forums and found this seems to be affecting all new users. Please update your app description memrise - your courses aren't free anymore.

Memrise Review. Memrise is an amazing app that can make you learn languages amazingly. I am deeply relying on this app as my friend who is Russian thinks that I won't be able to learn Russian but I said give me two years and I will probably be fluent by then. I only decided to agree on the bet that was a slap bet (which is when you bet on something and if one person gets it right then the person who got it right gets to slap the other person as hard as they can once) because I knew that I could rely on the amazing app. That's why I would rate it 5 stars. The last brilliant thing about this app is that is if free! I would highly recommend this app!

This app shouldn’t be allowed to be promoted as free. I have tried many language apps and websites and when I came across this one I was quite impressed, it taught me at a pace I liked... that was until I realised I couldn’t get past level 1 unless I paid for it, so that means I could only learn 8 words. I thought maybe I’ll pay because I like the app and the I saw the price... what a joke! That is way too much pay, especially for an app. I get people worked hard on it but if it was even half of what it is (even on top of the discounts you’ve tried to prompt) then it would be reasonable. I don’t have the kind of money especially since I’m going overseas which is one of the reasons I wanted to learn a langue, likely most others using this will have the same issue. This app has so much potential and it’s such a shame it costs so much. I also think it shouldn’t allowed to say free on the App Store as in the end it’s ridiculously misleading.

Great app, but.... Hi Memrise, I think your app is highly beneficial to anyone who wishes to learn a language, but I do believe that you should let us language learners take a couple more lessons before having to buy a subscription. This is not only for my benefit, but for the benefit of your team. You see, we sign up to the app, learn for 5-10 mind, and then have to buy something. It’s really off-putting, and it’s probably losing you many customers. Maybe give us the first 5 lessons, then I think we all might consider a subscription. Thanks in advance! Please try and get back to me about what you think of my suggestion.

Why?. Look, don’t get me wrong, I love the way this app teaches you how to learn languages... and I know what you’re thinking... “if you like it so much then why are you rating it so low?” Because it asks you to pay for it or otherwise you can’t get that far unless you jump into the really advanced stuff and not know what half of it means. I know that not everything can be free, but letting you do a little bit of a language and then cutting you off if you don’t pay money per month or per year, then what’s the point of even making not even a quarter of the app free and the rest not? Okay... rant over...

Not a free app, don't market it as such.. Everything is locked after the first level, so you get to learn a few words, then you're forced to pay for a subscription that costs over $100 or stop using the app, and marketing it as free is a blatant lie. If you want to make money from the app, charge $10 for a full version and be done with it. I also find it ridiculous that you can't even access the offline mode without paying... some of us have wifi only devices we want to use on two hour commutes to use out time well. Have deleted the app, and will stick with duolingo.

Memrise 😊. This app is Amazing!! It help me learn Japanese so quick and so effectively. It kept on reminding me to keep going and revising and I did !! I could also review the things I learnt in the last lesson and could see what I had left too learn. There were many different things to learn like places alphabet and much more and many options for languages. There were also videos and visual representations Thank you so much!

This is so great. I have tried out many different language learning apps but they have all been dictionary like. This app is really easy to understand and helps build your memory unlike other apps. This app is a ten out of ten for me and I wouldn't be surprised if it is for you to. I 100% recommend this app to anyone attempting to learn a new language.

Awesome app but... Money!!. This app is great but you can barely learn much without having to pay to learn more! I love the way you run the app and the techniques you use to help us learn and remember each word, but you can only learn the few same words over and over unless you pay around $50 a month! I absolutely love the app except for that! I really wish this app didn’t push us to pay that much money! No other language apps are as good as yours and it’s a shame really that we can’t learn many words. I already know those few words and but those few words won’t help me learn the language. So please can you let us have access to some more activities, then this app would be 5 stars Amazing! I hope you take this into consideration, Laura

too many mistakes and major loss of progress. i've maxed out japanese 2, but lots of my progress got wiped for no reason today. the course appears to be incomplete. same thing happened to my japanese 3. at least 10% is wiped, and now it forces me to learn old words i've already learned months ago, and i'm unable to progress forward. btw there are tons of mistakes with the translation and nobody ever addresses it or reply to my requests about these mistakes. update: the missing progresses magically recovered today.. btw please review the entire japanese 3 course and fix all of the mistakes, thanks! when you learn the course in simplified chinese, the translation (and even the hiragana sometimes) have too many mistakes. i've tried to report them twice in the past but got no replies. and as i progress through the course i've discovered a lot more mistakes that are too many to report individually. for an educational app that costs quite a lot of money, it's irresponsible to mislead the students with this amount of mistakes. so it's best if you guys could go through the entire course and fix all of the mistakes. btw your app needs to implement a 'report mistake' button so that the community can help improve the app more conveniently.

Absolutely Worth It!!. I downloaded the app to give learning French another another shot after different apps weren’t working for me (stupid owl). I’ve only just finished the first level of French, and one week of this app, has helped me more than months of others. I’ve also been able to learn much faster because of the techniques that memrise uses!! Anyway! I just had a an honest to god conversation in French with a friend in Quebec! I stumbled a bit, but we only used a translator very rarely, and it’s because of Memrise!

Worth to pay for. Being able to read and understand other language rather than 2 was my long wishes and this app assist me in learning Korean by the basic word , i can easily understand most of its character now which will take quite time to learn outside. The price 160$ for forever is reasonable for an education app, it is even more cheaper than a calculator in high school which around $200 instead you have a range of language to choose , easy to access and learn then yeh why no XD

Impressed. I’m extremely impressed with the quality of this app. It’s free which is the biggest positive. This app provides you with daily words in the most common languages you would want to learn, but you can also learn more than just 3 words in 1 day. It provides verbal and written versions of a word and even puzzles you to spell it. Really recommend this app if you want to learn a language fast and easy.

Better understandings. This app has helped me to understand words in different languages better. Right now I’m a student in Australia studying Japanese and I downloaded this app because I wanted to learn a different language to what I was learning (Russian) then realising that I cannot finish that course unless I pay for premium. So, I moved onto learning Japanese and I continued learning through different skills. I cannot wait to learn the other languages that I can learn. This app helps me learn through interaction of people who speak the language and this helps me because I know how to say like the people who speak the language I thank the Memrise team for putting this app, it’s a real piece of art 👌👌

Almost perfect. I would love to see a ‘report problem’ button, so users can alert the developers to missing audio, etc Listening exercises should utilise the keyboard, rather than a selection of options, because it can be easy to 'deduce' the correct option, negating the effect. The 'completion' sound is a rather eye piercing bell, not a huge problem, but not particularly pleasant either. Other than that I absolutely love this app! It has successfully replaced Duolingo (after the health system introduction) and I'm not going back!

Learning to impress the missus. Been doing this for a bit over a month now. I’m taking it pretty slow and I’m learning at a pretty average pace. However even so I never expected to have made it as far as I did. I started learning to make the missus happy, she loves everything French, and is borderline fluent herself. She told me after even 1 week that it seemed I’d been learning it for a while. Can’t recommend the app enough. Really puts you into and makes sure you learn the language as well as colloquial pronunciation and all such. Brilliant!

An amazing app!. I love the way they use so many native speakers in the lessons and tests. The comprehension tests are great! I also really like the immersion, TikTok-like feature. There are a few small bugs and the social features could be improved a lot. The main problem there is that it’s like going through a maze trying to figure out how to add people. If they improve this feature it would outrun Duolingo and the others by a mile. That being said, it already has the lead for sure! Thanks for making such a great app and at a good price point! 😊

Easy and fun. The full app is easy to use and ensures you improve your vocabulary and grammar through read, writing and listening skills. There are also a lot of languages to learn which means you won’t get bored. Although I paid for it you have to think - there’s a lot of time and resources sunk into this app to ensure a quality product. Those people deserve to be paid and you won’t waste your money if you’re actually committed to learning the language.

I learnt 3 different languages!. This app is total amazement, I don't understand how it is able to make us learn so much in so little time. Witching 4 months I had become decent in English pretty much fluent I had also become fluent in Indonesian and am learning French (the first two I did in computer French is solely on app and within 4 days I am close enough at making basic greetings and similarly things)

Dear people who made the app PLZ READ. I love the app more than any other language app and its better than having a teacher. I’d recommended it to all my friends and family members but there’s one issue... Well it’s not a fully free game if it was I’d make it a five stars or maybe more if I could but I can’t. But that’s not what I’m getting to I wish u could make the app fully free so kids or any one else can use it. PS thanks for reading PS PLZ COMMENT BACK IF U CAN 👍👌😉😇😋😄😜

10 x Better Than Duo Lingo. I have been studying Russian for over 3 years and tried lots of different apps and websites. This app is the most advanced, interactive and useful for learning a second language. The video is locals speaking in their native tongue is so valuable for learning the language and such a great idea. Awesome app.. I’d give 10 stars if it was available. Thank you!

In depth & varied learning. It starts you with the basics and you learn in a variety of different ways which makes the app interesting and effective! Including listening, reading and writing. Conversations with a pre-programmed bot is included, and while effective, it seems to throw you in the deep end with reading questions in kanji that are not yet learned. Luckily you don’t need to know what the names and activities are as you can work out the answer by coping from the question given to you, however maybe the english translation can be given with the kanji? Once you answer the question it does then tell you what the question was you just answered was in english, though it was awkward at first. Never the less, I am learning Japanese! and may even look at another language as many languages are avaliable to learn on this app!

My absolute favourite language app. This app is fun and very interactive. I love how it feels like a game! Very well designed. I practice French everyday for just 10 minutes and it’s extremely helpful in building a foundation for when I travel to France next year. Just 10-15 minutes every single day and you’ll be learning a new language in no time! Highly recommend.

Generally good. i use the Spanish advanced program to improve my vocabulary and most definitions are accurate but there are some exceptions where the translation is not the generally used meaning ( according to Collins). there are also some words where the sound is missing. It would be good to have a feature that allow you to report errors or bugs. overall though it’s good and excellent value for money

Syncing doesn’t exist. Love using Memrise but it’s seriously annoying that the streaks don’t sync up on the online version and iOS app. Also, if you log out and then log back into the app, the stats for the day reset as well and it shows that I’ve learnt and reviewed nothing that day despite just doing hundreds of reviews before I logged out.

The best one - I've tried other popular ones. The best. Engages over time. Not repetitive and no too slow like other popular apps. I won't name the other apps like the popular ones staring with D and the other starting with D, but Memrise is the best by far. It's been months now, slowly improving in two three different languages. It strengthens learning in every way, strengthens your weak areas, and let's you get new words without endless focus on the same old words

Used to be free. Memrise used to be free. I haven’t used it in a along time but was looking forward to learning again now that I have a new phone… to my disappointment, you can only do a single level of any course now without paying. For shame, Memrise. I understand that you need to make money, but isn’t it enough to have a pro option? The free version doesn’t need to be as great, but locking EVERYTHING except Level 1 behind a paywall isn’t nice. Used to slightly prefer this over Duolingo, but will now be sticking to the latter.

I love it!!!. This app is amazing. It isn’t like other language apps where it teaches you words you can’t use until you learn everything. This teaches you the things you need to communicate then gets harder. It feels like an actual teacher is in front of you and teaching you. The fact it has true people is great. It’s amazing and I would always recommend it. 🎖🎖🎖🎖🎖

Can’t get an account. I download this app and got a message saying my email address is already on file and requested that I enter my email address to reset it which I did but no information came to my email address to do so. Also I can’t remember ever downloading this app before,

Great app. I have tried many other apps such as duolingo, lingo deer, Babbel and others. But this is the only good one where you can really memorise the information because of the repetition. And also you don’t need to pay for the app to be good

Amazing app. I like that this app lets you study many courses for free. They cover over 40 languages. Memrise has really helped me to build my vocabulary and practice listening to correct pronunciation. I highly recommend this app. Edit: since my original review, Memrise has made numerous changes to the app layout, visuals, and learning structure. I’m not impressed with these changes, but as long as they are minor and leave my app alone, I’ll continue to learn in peace. The direction of the platform really undermines the original vision, the work of volunteer contributors, and the expectation of paying customers.

What. Why does it say be careful in spanish is aguas.

Great app. Memrise is a great app to learn languages on, great platform, although there's inapp purchases. I don't buy anything on apps normally so this will see how far I can get in the app w/o purchasing anything.

Noice. Noice

Hi. I have been doing the Memorize app for 2 years and I think it is absolutely incredible! It has helped me master the language our teacher wants us to learn! I am fully satisfied with it and do recommend!

Learning French. I started off using the website which is great, but have enjoyed using the app with especially the whizz quiz and the flag marking challenge

Fácil de usar. O aplicativo é realmente fácil de usar e incita-o a praticar mais

Add the Ukrainian language. Add UKRAINIAN LANGUAGE!!! It has the right to be in the list of languages of the world!!!!

Do not get this app!. Memrise just made an announcement that they will move all community courses to pasture on a new website called ‘Decks’. We don’t even get an app or offline options. This makes it useless for 90% of us who have been with Memrise from the start. Do not download this unless you are a beginner and want to give money to a company that volunteers built. They have spit in our faces. Disgusting.

Too pricy. While the initial demo was fun I was disappointed to find out that you cannot progress through the first stage without signing up for a subscription. Even at half price it’s unfortunately out of my reach. I wish there was a free version where you watch ads at times to progress levels.

Would be 5 stars but.... During the lessons the correct answer is almost always the first choice out of multiple. In my case I am learning Japanese, so this could be different per language. I don’t feel I am really learning more so than just remembering to hit the first button. Other than that, it’s pretty helpful to my studies and pronunciation.

Great App. I was made for loving app

✨Fee ✨. I love Memorize app since it’s a free easy way to learn languages! The only thing I would ask them to change would be the fact that you have to go on the computer to follow people and start a new language learning guide.

starts off great. reached level 10 and cant get past review. of course there is no way to contact support. been doing review forthe last 2 weeks so learning new words has stopped. pity i still have 9 months left in my subscription

Good for beginners Japanese. Better than most apps for beginners Japanese, by combining Japanese 0, and Japanese (no script) 1-3. Japanese 1 gets into Kanji quickly so it’s better for people at an intermediate level. Would love more (no script) levels, or a slower kanji study. FYI this is more of a study tool, and for learning words and short phrases. It doesn’t always explain the grammar. Japanese grammar is very different than English so it’s good to team this app up with another form of learning. Still giving it 5 stars for sure because I probably would have quit by now if not for this app! Worth purchasing pro too so you can download

Fun. Easy to practice Spanish in a fun way

Fun and helpful. By far the best app for learning practical Korean. It’s fun and relevant to daily life. Love the trackers to keep me motivated for a few minutes practice each day. Helped me immensely when I was living in South Korea for several years.

some languages are very limited. only 6 lessons in Yoruba?? but like hundreds in other languages. why even include it at all??

Fancy flash cards. It seems to me a fancy set of vocabulary cards for different languages that explains each phrase really well. I like how, on top of providing a translation, they also provide a literal translation that helps me understand each word. With that said, it is JUST a flash card set, so you must use something else on top of it to really learn a language.

Awesome. I just got the app and I love it all ready. Before I had the app Duolingo but that didn't help because I have a bad memory. I also try the app Tiny Cards but it's all about flash cards but that didn't help either. This app is the best I can get and pretty cool. For being a sixth grader we don't learn Spanish or any other different language so this is an opportunity for me to learn knew languages before I go to high school.

Best features removed in premium/higher levels. They used to have video conversations to practice listening and comprehension which was one of the best features. Once I upgraded to continue learning it’s completely removed now. A finesse and scam for downgrading quality for higher levels. Otherwise, I enjoy the fact you can learn slang and colloquial expressions instead of traditional vocabulary

Good for school. This helped me with my homework and help me get good grades!!

Memrise. Awesome! I feel like I’m learning a lot!!

Look elsewhere to learn japanese. In fact, I would look elsewhere for any other language, sad I wasted money on this…

New design is bad. I don’t like the new design. The colour scheme is cold and not welcoming - before was much warmer and seems friendlier. Also it’s harder to track to see if I’m meeting daily goal. I’ve been using it much less after the new design got released, although this is my favorite language learning app because of the customized vocab list learning feature. I used to use it almost everyday.

I am now Portuguese. De nada

Works great. I really recommend this to anyone looking to learn a new language who doesn’t know any vocabulary yet

The BEST! 👌🏽✅👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. I am Loving this app!¡ Estoy muy contento! The repetition gets a little tedious BUT I really need it! I can’t believe how much I’ve learnt in six steady days of learning! Thanks Memrise!

Excellent European Portuguese. Just returned from three weeks in Northern Portugal. Fabulous trip and I was amazed at how often I was complimented on my pronunciation and accents. Memorize was an awesome learning tool and I have recommended it to many friends and fellow travellers. Best language app I have used.

Helpful and Fun. I enjoy using it. I learn a lot. It has a number of options I can use to mix things up a bit or to concentrate on certain areas. I like it. Just wish I would use it more than I do.

Great. This app is really good I have learned so so much and I bet u can too. This app help so much and is so easy to use! I love itttt

Most recent update. The style change is really hard on my eyes and I feel it is harder to manage the app and know where to go. It now looks more like a child’s app than an education app. Not a fan In terms of learning language, I feel it’s a bit too fast paced for some things. I feel that I’m not learning the breakdown before learning the phrase so it makes longer phrases harder to learn. For example a taught phrase is “take me to the hospital please.” Well, can I learn the word for hospital and take me to first?

Hard to unsubscribe. I really am not sure if I am going to be charged monthly forever. I have cancelled my account… but will the auto renew keep working? It is difficult to end subscriptions.

Régression de l’appli. C’est vraiment n’importe quoi vous avez enlever les différents cours disponibles autre que les langues. C pas la meilleure idée d’avoir fait régresser l’application je suis extrêmement déçue. 😡 vous devriez remettre les autres genres de cours si vous voulez avoir plus d’une étoile de ma part. Encore une chance que les cours sont enregistrés sur mon compte je vais pouvoir en faire profiter une amie qui étudie dans le domaine de la santé

Planned removal of community content removes all value. I used to be a big booster and evangelist for this app and was a Pro subscriber for years. They just announced plans to migrate the community-created content (which was this app’s greatest strength and what differentiated them from other language apps) to a web only site. Extremely disappointing and there is now no more value in this app if they follow through with their plans. Update! They just announced that they will be creating a separate app with offline mode after listening to their users. This is good news and I’m now cautiously optimistic. Second update: I have updated my review to 1-star again as I received developer feedback that they are working on a “mobile friendly website” for their community courses instead of a mobile app. This is not what I want and doesn’t suit me at all. If they go back to a “website” I will cancel my subscription again.

Decent. Mostly good but has problems. Cant set course to have no daily goal (like you can on the website) Learning settings do not sync with web version The app turns music volume down during tests, no way to disable this. seems like things that would be fixed already.

No audio in video quizzes. Audio and video work fine in lesson. But in final quizzes, only video, no audio. Raising volume to max, no difference. iOS 15.5.

Best app ever. Best app ever

Engaging and fun!. Very agreeable and satisfying

Great App for Language learning. I’ve tried finding other language learning apps to learn Korean and I’ve found this one to be most enjoyable experience of them all. A quality subscription for a yearly pass is a perfect way to really hear yourself into this app. The thing I enjoy most about this app is that it’s versatility in mediums. An audio through visual, listening exercises and button pressing. There is no pressure or “gamefied” aspect to this and the app allows you to learn at your own pace while celebrating day streaks. The thing that keeps making me come back is the videos of the phrases. It’s nice to be able to listen to different speakers of various ages, genders and speaking styles and it really helps me try to use my brain to pickup audio clues and lip reading. A little bit heavy on the repetition, but could use a little more variance such as events with different people’s ages/places/jobs.

Costumer service sucks. If you want to cxl your subscription or need help, you can email as many times as you want and you will not get email back.

Used to be good. I liked this app a lot a few years ago. Recently reinstalled it and found it to have lost critical features. Part of its utility was accessing user-created content. Now, it will only show a handful of the old content I used (which is still available online through their website) and won’t let me search for anything other than a short list of approved courses. I’m sure this is useful to some people. I however am disappointed by the loss of functionality this app has undergone.

A unique language learning app. One of the most useful features to me is the literal translations of French phrases to English. It helps a lot with understanding the French language. The developers deserve my money.

Great concept!. You will never learn to speak a language fluently from an app, and this app is no exception. However, as a learning resource, I find Memrise to be more useful than other apps because you get to see real and different people using the words and phrases you are learning. I definitely feel a lot more confident in my pronunciation skills than I have with other apps. I also really like the tiktok/reels style videos featuring the phrases you are learning.

A great app but more content needed (esp Arabic). Learning with locals videos would be greatly appreciated for Arabic

Simply the best. Better than all da rest. Even after like 6 years

Memorise. It is really good because it is for free and it is sorta like Duolingo

4 - 5 stars. It’s good but it takes a lot about drinking. I would like it more if there was less talk about drinking, but either then that it was a very good app and i would recommend it to my friends.

Good for the basics, but still needs debugging. I’ve been using this app in conjunction with another app to learn Japanese. It does well for teaching short-term memory things. The other app is better at driving it home. The biggest issue I’ve had is that sometimes it will generate a multiple choice question, but the correct answer will be present multiple times (I’ve seen it happen as many as 3 of 6 of the answers). This makes it near impossible to guess the one the app has decided is the right one and then the program thinks you’re having problems with that word and forces you to review it. Also, since the multiple choice questions are randomly generated (other than the correct answer), the other answers are usually not even close to the correct answer, making it quite easy to just guess instead of knowing. I dislike this lack of critical thinking. It lets me be lazy, which isn’t a good thing when you’re trying to learn.

DuoLingo is better. I’ve had Memrise for about two years now. I’ve never liked how they break down the learning. I started French in high school and went through all four years but I want to continue learning the language and Memrise doesn’t do any of the learning techniques I’m used to. Not that I expect an app to understand how I personally learn, but Memrise doesn’t teach how verbs conjugate or technicalities in grammar. For example, I just learned the phrase “are you following?” Which they teach as: “est-ce que tu suis?” The problem is, they never teach the entire verb “to follow” so I’m in the dark as to the rest of the verb. I just downloaded DuoLingo to try it, assuming I would stick to Memrise since I’ve invested two years. Already it’s much better and I’ve had it for about twenty minutes. They offer a placement test if you already have some experience with the language and they break down your learning farther than Memrise does. They have little bubbles for pronouns and animals and verbs and all kinds of things. Go with DuoLingo.

Going in a direction I don’t like.. I’ve been using Memrise since 2013 and has been one of my favorite language learning apps to date. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to learn a new language. I won’t be doing that anymore. It’s been a while since I have used the app and I decided to give it another go. The layout is great, it’s intuitive and easy to navigate and add courses. I love the availability of languages from official Memrise courses. My major flaw with this app is that they’re pushing the pro plans over everything and taking away the features that used to be free. I didn’t mind having the difficult words as a separate section that was pro-only, or the connect with the locals. The fact that they’re making review features that were free from the beginning pro-only is aggravating, and that they keep pushing the pro plans after every review session saying I’ve completed the “free level”. It feels like a chore using this app having to push away the adverts. I would prefer to see ads and have a free experience rather than seeing marketing for a service and features that are constantly being curbed to make money.

Good app for language learning. This is a really good app for learning languages with. On par at a minimum if not better than most of the other options, especially with the "learning with locals" video clips they use. The way lessons are presented and how words, phrases, and characters are introduced is all quite intuitive. Making it easy to spend a lot of time using the app, because it can be quite engaging. The only issue I have with it is that the vocal or speach recognition portion is not good. For example, native Italians somehow couldn't pronounce the words "correctly" enough to satisfy app. So the speach feature is frustrating since it doesn't really help you work on pronunciation near as much as just getting it to accept something so you don't "fail" that word. Everything else about the app is great, and easy to use. It's been a great tool to help speed up the learning of a second and third language while not being overly expensive or painful to use (minus the speach recognition). Give it a try, it's definitely worth it.

What a heart-breaker. Update: Wow, I didn’t think it could get worse, but…wow. The app is now utterly ruined. I am sick to my stomach, desperately wishing I hadn’t updated, and really angry that updating the app on my phone cause it to magically update on my iPad as well. Throwing community courses away has rendered this app completely meaningless, and since it’s obvious you will get rid of them on the website as well too, I need to figure out an alternative, and no idea how to save all these amazing courses. This used to be the very best app for language learning. But a lot of changes started coming a few a years ago, so I stopped updating the app, and for a long time things were great. Until this past week, when time finally ran out. The old version of the app finally broke, and I had no choice but to update and MY GOD is it bad now. I’m genuinely depressed about what this app has become. I’m thinking of moving the courses I’ve built to Anki, because I can’t see myself continuing with this. So, so sad. I’ve been with Memrise since the beginning. Nothing good lasts.

Download this app now and subscribe. If you're legit trying to learn another language and are looking for applications that can cater to that need, I highly suggest downloading and subscribing to Memrise. Self paced, highly interactive (vocal, visual, audible) and offers over 20 languages in which you can access simultaneously if you wish. You can access the content via mobile or computer. Not only does the program offer well put together formal lessons, it also incorporates session that include informal conversations (slang, curse words, the important stuff 😏) The application also includes a feature that allows you to scan in real time and it will provide you with a translation of the object in which you captured. I've tried numerous language learning applications and Memrise is by far the best! $30 annual sub which is $2.50 a month.. Less than a daily trip to Starbucks. You're welcome.

Memrise for Italian gets it.. One one hand you have Rosetta Stone, the original immersion program that has no video and barely works on iOS. On the other hand there are dozens of free apps that work great on iOS but are so juvenile in their presentation that I (GenX) find them annoying to use. Memrise hits that sweet spot; excellent immersion lessons with video of native speakers using not only simple vocabulary but also colloquial phrases that works really well in iOS AND no annoying cartoon animals. Or whatever annoying stuff other apps are using this week. It would be cool if they upgraded to give more tracking info (how many hours spent studying this week or this month instead of just today), or if they could offer a side-by-side talking lesson format for car rides when you can’t interact with the app. Overall, however, I like it a lot.

Great app for memorizing large quantities of information. This app is great you can makes you own or search for relevant decks premade. The only reason I am not giving the app 5 stars is the phone app does not allow for easy access to a list of everything you have learned already, and a way to checklist what you know, what you don’t know and, what you still want to work on. As far as I can tell you have to make mistakes on a word for it to be placed in the difficult word list. I’d recommend they have an option to touch the number of words you know and it brings you to a page with a checkable list of all those words. On that page I’d recommend the ability to click option to show all words alphabetically or the order in which you learned. A check box next to each word to put in difficult word list or already known would be useful for the phone app. Either way this is a very good app.

So far, so good!. A few years ago I tried to learn Russian using the more traditional methods. I wrote a couple books, learn some grammar rules, memorize vocabulary. Super dry and I did not retain much. Then I moved up and paid for the first series of Rosetta Stone. That was much better but not available on my mobile phone. It required that I sit at home, and wear headphones to complete the lessons. I tried Pimsleur and I thought that was really boring. Again, no iPhone app. I chanced coming across this program earlier today. It fits on my phone very well and the lessons are really fun. And I am learning! I will probably pay for the full picture first one because I really like this approach I have two months before I made my future in laws in Ukraine and I intend to speak some basic conversation with them in Russian. This program just might help me do that.

Accessible intro to studying a language. Baby step by baby step, the modules developed by the company for the major languages introduce you to vocabulary and verb conjugations. Good foundation for more formal study, or just to “have some words” if you are traveling. Conversational, communicative approach rather than formal grammar, at least with Portuguese. Not a substitute for taking a class or full immersion, but regular use does pay off, at least in terms of passive understanding. The modules available for less commonly taught languages seem to be all over the map in terms of approach and quality. I didn’t find any Latin course that I particularly cared for, for example. But as someone involved in language documentation, often having any learning material is better than none at all. And it is marvellous the range of languages users have contributed.

Lots of progress. My words cannot suffice to describe the way I've progressed through this app. The best way to learn is always full immersion, but when it's not available, this app provides a fantastic way to prepare you for immersion. I've used it in China, Thailand, and Germany and impressed natives with the progress achieved through the app, as well as learned to read Simplified Chinese. I've tried duolingo and found it helpful as far studying the grammar, but it does not do as much as memrise for building fluency. I'd recommend Memrise to anyone who wants to venture out into the world and is willing to give 15 mins of effort each day for this goal. Applied: start studying a course at least six months prior to the intended travel. Don't overburden your learning (to avoid burnout) but do as much as to make you comfortable. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

Love it but.... Okay, this app has really helped me. Ive learned a ton of new vocabulary and am very thankful for downloading it. HOWEVER, it has also been extremely frustrating. Whenever I look at the overview of the course, I can see the kanji, however, when I start learning new words, I cannot see the kanji. So, I thought I could make a new account and start all over again. I logged out of my old account which had over a million points, and into a new one, this time selecting “skilled”. However, I cannot skip lessons?? I was able to do whatever I wanted in my old account, but now I have to stick to the lessons for they are locked? So, I try to get into my old account. But, it says all my passwords are wrong. I have them send an email but it never comes. I am getting extremely frustrated. All I wanted was to be able to see the kanji on all the words that I have been learning for a year now. I am not sure what to do now.

Great language app!. I have tried many apps and other language apps and this is one of the best by far. You can tell they are trying to bring you toward fluency by having the app encompass all manner of language learning such as conversation, memorization, grammar, listening, and refreshing what you learn. Long term memory is key and this app is trying to get the language in your brain permanently. Plus they have native speakers saying vocabulary words so that you can better recognize it when you hear the words out in the world. So far so good. Really happy to have purchased the pro version. I don't think you could maximize what the app can do if you stick with the free version. But some of you may learn languages easily so that may not be the case. Unlike other apps, of any type, that have pay for versions that are marginally better than the free version you really get added value. Just my two cents.

Functionality has been really going downhill. Not gonna change my star rating, but I am going to change my review. I have started using this again, but only for user generated content (which I stopped using when they stated they were going to remove completely from both their app and site; what happened there?) Though they do offer some decent courses, I prefer to use this to focus in on areas I struggle on, like working on my kanji for Japanese (which they don’t have a section for but quite a few user content exists on site) or practicing with Hangul (the Korean alphabet) I don’t like doing any of their courses due to the fact that the pop up for their paid service will show during the course (at least on the user generated ones it only pops up at the start and if you accidentally tap any of the paid features) The user courses are only available on the site, and some of them are definitely worth it (if there’s something specific you’re studying you can probably search for user created courses on the site easily as well)

C’est fantastique.. I’ve learned far more in just a few days with this app than weeks with others. All I ask is that you let me advance in some way. I have completed the basics, but simply don’t have the funds required to complete it. I beg you to allow me to do this. If I have to watch ads I will, but this has been the best language learning app I’ve ever used. I truly thank you for all the hard work you developers put into it. I’ve very sorry that I don’t have the money money to pay, because I would triple it if possible just as a gratuity. I love learning with this app so if there is anything possible that I can do to keep learning more with it, I absolutely would. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into it and please let me continue learning with you. Thank you very much for your time and for reading this.

A Great App for Language Learning. This app is such a great app to learn a new language or for those who want to retain what they have already learned. I am currently taking the Korean track and, although, I have taken Korean courses before formally. Memrise is such a great app in helping me remember what I have learned, as well as introducing me to new words and phrases. The repetitiveness of the lesson allows you to really hammer down new information. And if you’re someone like me who’s bad at keeping streaks, Memrise makes it easy for you to jump right back in where you left off. The only reason I relate this as a 4/5 is because I wish there was a learning tile, or option, for spelling. For intermediate learners like me, I love the flash card method for memory recall, but I would also really appreciate a section for spelling. Specifically with our in-phone keyboard, rather than pressing word groups to make the sentence. Either way, this app is one of the best language learning apps to get and invest in, if you haven’t already.

Chinese is lacking. I got Memrise to learn Chinese, since Duolinguo doesn’t have Chinese. I am learning the way words sound and what they mean, which is fine, but there is no emphasis placed on how to write them at all. Most of the time, if there is a character present on the screen, it’s only there for a brief moment. When I am able to take the time to observe it and write it myself, I am never encouraged to write it. In fact, when it asks you to translate something into Chinese and you try to write the character, it will punish you by marking that answer wrong, even when you write the correct character(s). For example, “hello” is nìhǎo (你好). When asked to translate “hello,” 你好 is considered wrong. It makes no sense to punish me for trying to read/write Chinese. In an increasingly text-centric world, reading and writing is a must. Please update your app to accommodate people who make the effort to learn to write. Thanks.

Fun and super easy!. So so happy that I found Memrise! This app makes learning new languages fun and easy by having all the proper components to learn a language. Having a video of a real person speaking the word or phrase is extremely important when learning a new dialect. It allows you to reflect on how the native speaker is saying it compared to how you are so you’re able to adjust sounds properly. Not only does Memrise include this, but it also has spelling questions and multiple choice questions. Worried about your spelling? Memrise has separate review tests for spelling and listening along with a timed review test as well. I would highly recommend this app for anyone looking to learn a new language or practice the language they’re learning in school. As a student myself I have found Memrise very useful as I am currently learning Italian (touching up on it), Portuguese (main land Portuguese), and Japanese (just for the fun of it!) Hopefully this helped many!

Hard for vision impaired. I absolutely love this app but it’s a daily struggle because there’s no way to enlarge the font or change to a serif font. The font is so small (and I have a large phone) that it’s really difficult to see accents and diacriticals, leading to unnecessary errors on answers. On typing responses, it’s really difficult with the small san serif font to see the difference between i and ¡ when the letters are in those tiny boxes. Here are some suggestions: Allow us to bump the font size a size or two larger in settings, or allow in settings the option to use our phone’s typing keyboard ( which we can set larger for vision needs) and I urge you to allow us a choice of one other font that’s easier for us to read , at least in English. Another thing that would really help is if, on typing/spelling answers, the letters didn’t move around from question to question, e.g., the í on one question is in the top row left and somewhere else for another question. I waste a lot of time trying to re-read the little boxed letters so I can select the right one. If this were just a bit more friendly for those of us with vision problems, I would definitely rate it a 5. Please change it so we can enjoy your app to the fullest. Please. I’m so frustrated when I can’t read the tiny type faster in speed drills and frustrated when I get wrong answers on words I know well because I can’t distinguish between certain characters.

Most helpful app so far!. I’ve had this app for a couple of years now and it has allowed me to get started on learning multiple languages. I like that allows users to learn various ways (some with small payments) but with time it does pay off. I’ve never paid for the extra stuff so it supposedly takes me longer to learn since I don’t practice learning German in other ways I.e. practice on listening skills. Sometimes the app will allow you to test out your listening skills when you’re learning new words and if you don’t get it correctly it’ll keep asking you until you get it right. I only started noticing it recently but when I would listen for a word or phrase and it wants me to choose the correct translation, all the options sound the same! Idk if that’s glitch but it only lets me choose one correct answer. Other than that I have no other complaints.

Great app. I love memrise. I use it for the Japanese version. It is a great way to memorize vocabulary and phrases, although I have noticed a few small "errors" wouldn't be the right word, but maybe culturally different phrasing in some of their example sentences that would sound odd to a native born speaker. Smaller things that I would like to see changed but haven't prevented me from using it: I wish they would shuffle/randomize the different options when it gives you a vocab word, it seems to always give you the same wrong choices to choose from. And, they seem to always change something, whether it be their graphics or their sounds, which is actually kind of annoying. This language learning app would be even better if it gave you an occasional short essay or article (reading practice) for you to read taking from a comprehensive list of the vocab you have learned up until that point.

Where is an official course for Hebrew?. I’ve use the Memrise app for years and it’s been fabulous for studying languages using the official Memrise courses. I even bought a light lifetime subscription. However, overtime, I’ve become disappointed by a number of things. First of all, I have been waiting years for an official Modern Hebrew language course, but nothing of the sort has been released. I have made do with the unofficial Memrise courses available, but I find all of them to be insufficient or full of errors. The language courses officially released by memories are fabulous, and the omission of Modern Hebrew is a major problem for me. My second complaint is that, overtime, the app seems to have moved away from using images as mnemonics. This was one of my favorite parts of learning with Memrise, and I found it to be very effective. I’m not sure why they decided to move away from that model.

Love it-but Speed Review is buggy. I love this app and the blend of video, audio, and written instruction. I like that the content is relevant to travel and real life (I recently learned how to say “I don’t give a crap” and “for &@$!’s sake!” for instance.) I love that you hear multiple people saying the same thing so that it helps you figure out inflection and cadence. What drives me BANANAS though is that sometimes during Speed Review (which I love otherwise) the buttons don’t work. I will be pressing an answer and the button will like flicker but not actually press and then I lose a heart for no reason. It’s really frustrating. But other than that I adore this app and have no regrets buying it at all. (And I RARELY buy apps-if it isn’t free, can live without it. Lol) Oh! One more thing—I bought it to try to learn enough French to travel, but realized that I could also switch over to practice my Spanish or German! I thought it was worth the money for one language so I was thrilled I could practice others too!

5 stars until.... ...an update has left me seriously considering canceling my subscription, which I’ve had for a year now. Shortly after finding the app, I even talked my fiancé into using Memrise. I’ve used Memrise for learning Simplified Chinese+Mandarin, and it had long seemed to provide equal emphasis on learning character, pinyin, and translation. This was the way I best learned. But since a recent update, I more often than not find reviews have mostly, if not exclusively, shown literal English translations alone when a correct answer is given: virtually never (simplified) Chinese characters now. If I could make a suggestion, it would be to allow customizable settings, or a new feature, allowing you to review any one of these (character, pinyin, literal translation) or a combination of them. I’d have loved such a setting or feature even before the update that has nearly eliminated the characters. I can’t see why this or something like it couldn’t be useful for other Memrise courses.

helped my Russian improve, HUGELY. This app has helped me learn so much! I downloaded it less than 6 months ago, and it’s helped my Russian dramatically improve. I find it’s gamification slightly addictive, compelling me to learn. It makes it really easy to set daily habits/goals that are low commitment. The repetition is also a proven effective way to learn. The one thing I don’t love is the inability to set a daily goal BETWEEN 5 and 15 words/day, since I feel like 5 is too low, but 15 is hard for me to consistently do. But I find the dialogues/characters to be amusing and entertaining, and it makes the whole thing fun. In any case, my friends and colleagues say my Russian went from me only saying хорошо to everything to actually being able to have a conversation. I definitely recommend getting and paying for this app. I tried duolingo too, but found it less effective and less motivating for me to learn.

Really good for vocabulary expansion. This is a great app and it works. This will not make you fluent since you will need to learn more complex grammar rules and be able to formulate sentences with the vocabulary that you acquire through the app. I am currently studying Italian and I have learned 1000+ words by heart thanks to this app and it did take my conversational fluency to the next level due to vocabulary acquisition, but again, this is not my primary way to learn Italian. It is an excellent supplementary tool and that is pretty much it all it is. Tip for Memrise: if there is any way you can single out tricky words for the speed review that would be excellent. For example, star tricky/hard words that you can’t just remember, and instead of doing the whole review with 50+ words, we can focus on the words that we have a hard time remembering. I will definitely give 5 starts if you implement that feature.

Really helpful. It’s really good and helpful but it’s not free, you can download it free so it makes you think that you are getting free lessons and will be able to learn phrases and words without pay. But that is not the case which I guess should be expected, after you finish to a certain point in level one of whatever language you have chosen (I chose German + Korean) it won’t let you access other levels unless you pay for them. Which yes it’s an app for lessons on learning a language and they have a lot of different languages so it makes sense you have to pay, and they give you a little time to get used to the app before you make that decision which I like that. But it’s kinda annoying that you have to stop what you are doing, or redo all the words you’ve already learned if you don’t feel like paying or don’t have the money to pay. Other than that it’s a really helpful and good app to use, I think it is well deserving of my five stars. ☺️☺️

Memrise. I’ve only had this for a short while and I am really enjoying this so far! I am definitely going to purchase the full plan in the near future and this is great for my 5 year old little girl as well! I love all of the language options that I can choose from and go through the lessons quite quickly and still remember what the words mean! Especially, when it’s my first time being introduced to a language that I’m interested in. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in learning new language and just to get their feet wet! Also, great for children, in my opinion. They than learn three vocabulary words and in small bite size junks where they’re aren’t overwhelmed! Also, the app isn’t lagging and I’m not having any trouble with the interface and the app isn’t confusing for me. Very straightforward. Overall, I am enjoying this! Great job everyone on the memrise team!!!!

Such an amazing app recommend!!. I can’t recommend this app enough! It is truly a great app for beginner users. I have learned so much in the past week since using Memrise. I got this app originally to learn Hebrew but when I realized that they didn’t have any lessons for it I started looking at the other languages they offered. That’s when I saw I could learn German!! My Mama’s family came from Germany and I’ve always wanted to learn. Now I get that opportunity. So danka Memrise which means thank you in German. The only thing I would recommend adding is maybe a place where you can go to see all the words you have learned so far and ones you might need to practice on a bit more. Also maybe some games to play to help memorize words. Like maybe a game where you have to match the word to the meaning of it or something along those lines.

Free accessibility please!!. I am 14, and I want to learn German. Of course this means that I have very little access to good language learning apps since I cannot pay for premium. Please, can you make it so that I (and others like me) can learn a language for free? This app has got to be THE BEST app I have ever used, and it makes me sad that I can only do two courses before I must pay for the whole thing. I don’t mind ads as long as I can learn with this app. Other apps only focus on vocabulary, and they don’t help with conversation skills at all. This app does! I have learned so much in those two courses, but unfortunately I can’t learn more. I have searched pretty much the whole app store for a language app this good, and here it is. But please make it accessible to people who want to learn, but can’t because they are unable to pay. Thank you for your time, and have a great day! ❤️

The further I progress, the worse it gets. When I first found this app, I was impressed primarily because it seemed to focus on idiomatic, colloquial Spanish and French, the two languages I’ve chosen to study. I recently finished Spanish 2 and started Spanish 3, and there is a HUGE drop in the quality of the app. It seems like it’s actually gone backwards rather than forwards in the vocabulary, the video presentations, the presentation of idiomatic Spanish, etc. This is a great disappointment not only because I opted for a yearly subscription, but more importantly I was hoping to continue to improve my Spanish. I’m not sure what to think: is Spanish 3 the original course, and Spanish 1 and 2 were upgraded later. I hope so, because maybe there’s hope that the developers will get around to improving the subsequent courses. But a word to the wise, maybe consider a month-to-month subscription so that you can evaluate whether it’s better to continue paying for what now seems to be a less worthwhile language instruction app.

The BEST’. I have Duolingo and countless websites to help me learn Italian. Also have books, which for me only helped while I was taking a class. But I really like the audio programs I have such as Pimsleur and others that have a series available on Audible. When I heard about Memrise, I chose to start as a non-beginner since I had been studying, mostly in my own, for many months. Considering all the repetition, it was the right choice. This is the very best app for learning! The repetition is very important for more reasons than I can list here. The native speakers in the videos make the language come alive. The part where I get to do a voice-over with the speakers is a hoot!!! Too many features to list. If you are serious about learning Italian, download this and get to Pro as soon as you are able. You will love it. It is so much fun!

Great start but you have to pay. I have Duolingo & don’t engage much with it since I tend to get bored with quickly, but this app not only gets you comfortable with hearing & reading a word but spelling them too!!! The constant reviews are perfect for keeping my mind refreshed so I can be sure each word sticks. My only hang up is that once I completed about 3 full lessons I suddenly had to pay to go any further. It wouldn’t let me learn new words for a few days. I kept getting the additional features as the only thing to click on which was frustrating. I understand paying for access to extra features, but if you’re not interested & only want the basic lessons provided you should be able to get that. I wouldn’t mind paying one flat rate for access to all the basic lessons, but the idea of an renewing charge to my ITUNES account for everything has me resistant. A larger variety of payment options would be awesome.

Quite effective but subscription. 4.7 stars Among several apps and systems for learning languages I have, this one the best for actually learning. It’s similar to Duolingo but seems to be a little better. For example it auto-advances each time and everything is spoken in the new language by both a man and a woman. Generally the difficulty is pretty reasonable so you’re not bug down with learning too much detail to quickly. I also appreciate that it’s not too picky about vows with accent marks. One drawback is that it’s a subscription service which continues indefinitely. So I have to put a reminder in my calendar to not continue the subscription forever. And also I’m kind of worried that after putting so much time into it that I’m going to not have access to to review in the future. So I wish there were some option just to pay a single fee and be done with it. Also there’s quite a few silly words or obvious words like France, New York, impossible ... which are spelled exactly the same. Also when you finish the lesson goes through 1 million classic reviews that never seem to end. And you have to get out of it and go back in to go onto the next lesson But overall I’m learning very quickly and that’s the important thing. I pay for fluence and rocket French and seem like I was making very slow progress with both and even do a lingo didn’t seem to move me along that quickly.

Need to purchase to learn everything. Basically you need to buy the subscription to learn the rules of a language. I checked my computer what the deal was and why I hadn’t completed a course and it told me about a few grammar courses I hadn’t complete. My initial thought was “sweet! They finally got grammar rules on here!” Then they said they only offer it in their app, “no biggie.” But then it turns out you have to purchase their subscription plan if you want to complete a course 100% because you can only get to level 2 for free (on the app). I’d rather they have ads than make me pay to pass the entire course. It’s free learning, that’s true. But, it’s 50ish words for free, everything else you have to pay for. Seriously, team Memrise, please just put some ads on the phone and let everyone learn for free. They might annoy us for 10 seconds but it’s better than annoying us for 10 minutes debating on if we should drop $50 for a year of the premium.

I love it compared to a lot of others!. Compared to a lot of apps I use, I think it’s different and engaging. I use anki to work on the most common words and a lot of the words you use in Memrise’s main course seem to pop in the most common words. The videos and tiktok esk side makes it fun to hear my target language and I love how they (for Japanese) focus on kanji and the answer has the furigana. Every app has their own focus but it seems to connect day to day life “things that would happen” which would help your brain connect the dots through context and placement kind of imitating immersion. Well done :3 Now, depending on what level you are on and language I would say depends on whether you can use the app or not. For example, Japanese I’d learn hiragana first and then hop in here. Other then that I don’t know about Arabic or Russian

Seven years of successful language learning now over. I’ve used Memrise for the last seven years to successfully learn languages I’ve used abroad, at work, and in learning ancient languages and dabbling in some endangered languages. But they deleted all of those features because I guess every app had to be a VC backed AI wielding monstrosity aiming for global domination, and making the best app in an underserved niche is an unwanted second place prize. This is a real shame as most other alternatives are not good. Anki does not use the burn-in technique Memrise did when you first learn a new card/word/phrase. The green owl tricks people interested in learning a language and gets them addicted to gamified simple rote drills that don’t get you remotely close to fluency or a working vocabulary. I think this company just burned down their own house. They clearly don’t understand their customers or the niche they serve. And to top it all off, they tried to push everyone into a lifetime subscription right before the change. No user will ever trust them again.

Goodbye friend. I have been using memrise since 2012. I loved it and advocated its effectiveness to hundreds since then. Unfortunately the first indication to me that bad things were coming was after they removed the ability to add community courses through the mobile app several years ago. Well the bypass was to add them to your account via browser then you had access in the app. Now they are removing community content completely from the app with a don't panic solution of “we will provide a url link to allow access via browser on mobile”. We can all see where this is going. I like many veteran users and supporters have lost trust and will find it hard to invest any further time with memrise. It’s time to move on to prevent loosing progress when they finally decide to pull the plug on any community content. Good luck competing with other centralised cookie cutter one size fits all learning experiences like the ranks of duolingo and the like. I will remember you for who you were and not for what you are becoming. You will be missed 💔

Expect to pay. The app helps especially with niche languages that Duolingo doesn’t have, for example, Portugal portuguese. Yet, what they offer you to check out is only temporary. You will have no choice but to purchase the app if you want to try out more which I find to be unfair. Duolingo doesn’t even do that. Makes me wonder if they are passionate about helping people learn languages or in it for the money. You don’t get past basic words like, Hi/Ola, Let’s go/Vamos La and Goodbye/Adieus. I need to see more than just a couple of basic words to know if this works for me and to purchase. It’s upsetting. Also, their app profile on apple I just realized said a year free trial but it still wants to charge my card. I’m interested to learn more but the billing and payment is shady. The UX design also needs work. While you are trying to learn a language they have a button on your main interface asking if you want to explore another, it shouldn’t be there.

Video clips not available in most units of Mexican Spanish. In general this is a nicely designed app. Learning vocabulary requires a lot of practice and repetition, and this app is designed in ways that allow you to get that practice without boring you. However, one aspect of the course was very disappointing: in the Mexican Spanish course, video clips of native speakers are available only in section 1 and section 4. Perhaps it is my fault for missing a notice about this, but I assumed that the video clips would be available throughout Mexican Spanish, and they are not. Had I known this from the beginning, I probably would have chosen a different app, since the video clips are a wonderful feature that allow you to learn from speakers who are engaging and interesting and have slightly different accents. I do highly recommend the app if you are learning another language that has video clips throughout the course. A list of the courses that do and do not contain video clips throughout is available on the Memrise website.

Great but not as great as it could be.. I use the app daily and I do love it but there are issues that could be addressed. I’m mostly using it to learn Vocab and as a sub to Anki (I use Memrise mostly for speed reviews RE: Kanji). The main issue I have is how there’s not enough continuity between it and the website version. Not just aesthetically but on the back end. Scores and features are often different. Changes i would love to see. -Speed reviews yield higher scores on the web version, which makes me want to use the web version instead... - You’re able to type into an answer field on the app, it would be better if you didnt have to tap on the field before you start typing (I use a Bluetooth keyboard). - User generated courses aren’t listed on the app... no idea why. - - Better tooling/quick options within the courses to mute audio, or have specific options for each course. Having to go back into the global options between courses is annoying. - Make the memes viewable from the course->Item lists. PLEASE. It’s annoying that i have to be in the reviews and get an answer wrong before I can check the memes, as the the app is named after this feature, it would be better if it was more accessible. - Include keyboard hot keys on the app version like you do on the web version. (Numbers for answers etc.)

Used to work fine, now has bug. Memrise is a useful app for memorizing words, albeit the translations in some courses are lacking. I was doing a course to memorize german verbs, and whoever created the list didn’t think to explain the difference between “heiraten” and “verheiraten” for instance. Anyway, it looks as though you can’t select courses created by users anymore so I guess that’s a moot point. My biggest gripe though is that for the past two versions, there’s been a bug in one of the exercises, the one where you select the correct audio out of three audio files. Now the exercise has three audio files of the same exact word spoken by two or three different speakers. The app apparently thinks just one of these audio files is correct even though it’s the same word being spoken. It’s frustrating because I can’t even skip these audio tests anymore, so I’m forced to repeat the same word that I already know just because I didn’t pick the right “random” choice. I hope this bug gets fixed soon.

I choose Memrise. My family and I are Portuguese. My mom, grandparents, uncles and aunt all speak the language and it wasn’t until I found the Memrise app that I could learn it without having to travel 6-8 hours first. Duolingo gives you the option of Portuguese but Brazilian Portuguese... not European (Portugal) Portuguese which is kind of unfair for me, because yes there is a difference... which is where this app comes in handy I’d recommend it to my family (those who don’t already speak the language) and friends for those who are looking to visit a foreign country, because the Memrise app offers many different languages for you to learn. And the best part the app is it’s quite simple to maneuver and use. I think the one thing I would want changed is the add about going “premium” I wish it wouldn’t pop up so frequently. Overall I will say the app makes learning something new, fun.

Mixed feelings. So when you open the Memrise app it only allows you these learning language options - Spanish (Mexico or Spain), French, Arabic, Korean, German, Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Polish, Danish, Japanese, Yoruba. I found this disappointing as a few years ago I was brushing up on my Finnish with this app & was wanting to return to it but it didn’t seem Finnish was available since their last massive branding overhaul. So I found other apps to be proactive with my language learning in. A few days ago I started reading an article on language learning apps that mentioned Memrise had 23 languages which made me look at the app again only to find there’s still only 19? I googled “Finnish Memrise” & up popped a Memrise Finnish course which was very confusing because the app didn’t give the language option for Finnish unless you go through go through the website link which will then open the course on the app.

Mexico Spanish Lacking/Premium Needs More Perks for the Price. Edited version, lowered rating. BUYER BEWARE: This app does not tell you what languages lack the premium features before you buy premium! It may not be worth your money. Now that a pronunciation feature has been added, that too is not available in the Mexico Spanish courses. It's really not fair. Mexico/Latin America Spanish is most common in the United States. So its a big deal if we don't have access to these essential features that the Mexico courses are lacking! Seriously, what am I paying for for premium then? Review from October '17: Overall a good app. It's kind of crappy that only certain languages get the learning with locals feature. Hopefully the developers are working on adding more, especially for the very common "Mexico" Spanish. I don't know anyone who speaks Spain Spanish, so the addition of Mexico for local speaker videos would be great. Another issue is the chat bot. So, like, when does he start chatting with me in Spanish? So far the only thing he wants to chat about is my demographic information...in English. That's not really helping my education here. Additionally, the addition of a voice recognition feature would be nice for those of us too chicken to speak a new language aloud. I like the explore feature. Now if only the explore feature started on the language I'm actually learning every time I open the app, it would be an even better feature.

Great app. I’ve been using Memrise for about two years, studying European Portuguese. I have the paid version - it’s a solid learning tool, and it has been my primary resource ever since I got it. I find the Learn with Locals feature to be especially useful, more so as my Portuguese improves. My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Portugal a few months ago, and we were able to handle all of our transactions - stores, restaurants, markets, car rental, etc - effectively if not always with ease. My barrier now is ease in conversations that last more than a sentence or two. I just got access to the new AI-based Membot feature and I think it’s going to be the perfect next-step resource. I recommend Memrise highly, especially for European Portuguese which isn’t always easy to find online.

Awesome, but needs a little improvement.. I almost gave it 4 stars but it is extremely helpful and I like the app so I gave it 5. There are a couple things that are frustrating to me that could be fixed to make the app even better. 1. After you answer a question, it automatically takes you to the next one instead of allowing you to review your answer (unless you were wrong, where it shows you the original card and offers help remembering it). I would like to be able to review the answer even after getting it right, because it offers more information but it goes away too fast. It has turned into a mini anxiety attack for me, trying to read the vocalization in .5 seconds before the next card comes up. It doesn’t have to be like that, there could be a setting that allows you to go automatically to the next one or not. 2. You can’t access the “help me remember this” unless you get a question wrong. I would like to access those from the very beginning when they first show you the word. It’s unfortunate that I have to miss a question on purpose to get access to that feature, which has proven to be extremely helpful for my memorization. These comments seem really complainy, but really I just wanted to say this in hopes that the app could be made better for everyone. It’s already really great and I’m grateful it exists, that’s why I gave it 5 stars :)

Keep coming back. This is the one app I keep coming back to to learn actual phrases. There’s a few other apps that I love to use for things, like grammar, vocabulary, super detailed information. However, when I went to Japan, the phrases I learned using this app for almost as helpful as all the other resources I used combined. This app probably isn’t ideal for someone wanting to be 100% fluent in Japanese, but it is perfect for someone wanting to learn Japanese that is useful for travel. Not to belittle apps, like Duolingo. But the phrase “I like pants more than skirts” isn’t all that useful. But a phrase like “I’m full” or they’re extensive interjections help me actually understand the language. Not just be able to regurgitate English phrases in a different language. This app is almost as much as a cultural app as it is a language app. Even more so, it’s extremely useful to learn how to use the language. As an English speaker, a lot of the phrases I use don’t translate well to Japanese. And this app has been the most helpful in learning how to say some thing that don’t translate well. A great example of this is if you want to complement someone. The way that we complement people in America would make someone in Japan feel uneasy. However, this app taught me ways that I could, using verbiage that makes sense for their culture.
