Good program mostly. I’ve been using this app for over a year now- just a couple of minor issues I’ve had- there’s no way to put in a new value or different fermentable. I’ve been making ciders and beer with apple juice as a source of sugar and I cannot predict the outcome like you can with the recipe building section. Also when adjusting your recipe if your efficiency is set low, as in the case of seeping grains (I’ve seen estimates as low as 25%) and sugar is imputed as a fermentable the same 25% is applied to your sugar. Overall this app is fantastic. It’s a great tool to tweak your recipes to make sure your abv isn’t going to be crazy (and I like my abv around 14%), to predict the color, to calculate your actual abv, to prime your beer. If you’re just starting out this is an app that will help you.

The best one out there. I used this for years, I’ve tried others but always come back to this one

Not worth the money. Since all the calculators are available for free on the website, it’s incredible that they would only include a tiny selection here. Furthermore, it looks like it was designed in the ‘90s and still doesn’t support the iPhone X screen layout. I do like the ability to save your recipes and notes. It’s pretty clear this was designed as a quick project, but has not had the design input or even just the dedication that the website has. And that’s pretty poor, considering the website is free. My recommendation: use this to save recipes. But just pull up the website on your phone and ignore the app calculators. What a shame, this had the potential to be great.

What happened??. All of the data from my previous brews has been blacked out? It’s there- but I have to copy and paste all of my notes and values to a note or other text interface to see it. The update ruined the app. I have a lot of valuable data that is now difficult to access. When the new app is released I’ll be leaving this ecosystem because this is evidence that our data is in limbo using this publishers tools. This is beyond frustrating.

Very limited. I didn’t realize it would be so limited compared to website. It doesn’t even do water volumes!! How can you use it without water volumes? Also no yeast pitch, equipment profiles, etc. etc.

Morons hate.. This app and its web site counterpart are one of the most up to date brewers apps. If it doesn't work for you, you shouldn't be make my beer it is that simple. Great app much respect to the design team.

Needs updating and a few more features!. I rely on this app every time I do a brew day. Incredibly handy to make modifications at my LHBS as I change my mind or based on the availability of ingredients. A couple things I wish would be updated: 1) I wish I could turn on auto-syncing. I can’t tell you the number of times I made an update only to overwrite it later by accident from the web UI. 2) ingredient search. 3) It’s built for smaller screens. 4) It’s lagging behind the web updates, which break recipes. For instance, adding the updated Lupulin Pellets in the web UI will give you an error when you try to save an update in the app. This last one made me move my ranking from a 4 to a 3 since it’s caused a lot of frustration. I like this app but since I pay for this service, I have higher standards for what to expect with regular updates. The app owner needs to consider breaking web changes as well. If the app is deprecated, please tell us.

Handy app. Nice to have recipes at your fingertips. Great app to create recipes with.

Ok companion to the website. Its nice having a native iPhone app to easily view recipes and calculators from the website. However, the UI feels dated and could use an update. I also think that it should be free to try and use without the website. Syncing with the website could easily be an in-app purchase.

Pretty great. Really like it. Wish it was updated a little more often.

Worth the small $ investment. This app is excellent. I have found the minimal amount of money required for BF app and web account to be well worth it. Pros: Adds quality to my brews and makes them easier. Good overall for recipes and creating brew beers. Informative and easy to use. Can save all of my recipes to check out later. Cons: does not include any free beer

Rating for Partial Mash or Extract Brewers. Unfortunately, had to scale down from 25 Gal 3 vessel pro system because of moving to high rise, bummer don’t let wife or girlfriend talk you into it! Needed an App for 2.5 Gal recipes this is easy to use and works very well for beginners especially and enough pro features to satisfy more experienced brewers.

It helps me with everything. From IPA's to Kolchs. I like it.

Cool app. But a glossary of brewing terminology would be nice.

Great app but be aware of extra costs. This a great app. They did a nice job with the interface and ease of use. I used beersmith for a bit but I found this one more user friendly and intuitive. However, if you want to use the sync feature not only do you have to buy the app, you must pay $9.99 a year for an online subscription. This price is not clearly stated within the app upgrade info or app description. Only says 'premium account required' which is easy to miss without a $ sign next to it or a "paid" tag next to it. That's not so much money but I feel like it needs to be more clearly stated that you pay twice for full functionality. A good stand alone app otherwise.

Needs an update. Nice to have recipes on the go, but the calculations are different from web to app which is extremely confusing.

Not enough to pay for this app. So, it is not enough that you pay $5 for this app. Still can't load in recipes from web site unless you also pay $15 there as well. Lame. Delete. Wish I could request my money back.

Worth It. Well worth it if you're not looking to sync with the web version. Build recipes and keep some notes - easy enough.

Brewer friend.. It is a great app. Great to save recipes and brew sessions. I use it all the time on my phone. I also have it on my laptop.

Continues to improve. Still a few options I’d like to see, but nothing that’s a deal breaker.

Calculator issues. Hello, the calculator boxes are completely black. I can no longer see what I am typing. The calculator still computes the information but I cannot see what I typed in. I am not sure if this is a known issue.

Use. Works ok, unfortunately you are unable to make changed to the original gravity which has an impact on abv and ibu.

Please update the app. I’ve been using it for a year and works ok except it really needs to be updated on the styles of beer. I cannot find a NEIPA or east coast IPA style. Doesn’t exist. I’m going to look at a few more brew apps before I renew, too bad because I do like it.

Good, But Limited. First, I use this app all the time! I can easily find my recipes and gather ingredients at the LHBS. More importantly, this is a very basic app. If you have already built your recipe and don’t need to alter anything it will show you exactly what you need. It does not connect/search user recipes which would be nice.

Want more fluid access across platforms.. Works well to store info but I wish it would allow me to access my info across multiple devices. Have an iPhone and iPad but it won’t share info between devices with same account.

Great tool. Easy to use. The perfect tool to start building your own homebrew recipes. The calculators and brew day interactive feature are big helps, too.

Great App for smart phone- internet connection, but works well internet-free. A great handy App for Brewers, both for composing recipes to a BJCP STYLE and to have at hand on brew day. I learned about it from Brewer’s Friend Free, and it’s well worth the $5.00 USD. It could use updates (no kveik yeast options), but quite handy when away from internet connection. Other brewing software may give estimates (OG, FG, IBUs, SRM, etc.) a little different, but this App puts the recipe design in the ballpark. Brewers Friend has a Gold level with $/ month to give access to web-based support, but this valuable App can store recipes locally, very handy to look back to “how I brewed it last time”, without going back to one’s brewing logbook. If the stand-alone app ($5.00) is imperfect, it is well worth the one-time investment. It was initially recommended to me by a home brewer of longer standing, and is well respected by many in homebrewing circles.

Neglected app. If you use the brewers friend website and enjoy it that is great. But do not use this app. It is ok until you realize how neglected it is. The bjcp definitions need updating, so do ingredients, and first wort hop additions. It’s great to be able to come up with a recipe while you are on a plane without an internet connection, but keep in mind you’ll likely have to make adjustments in another app or in your journal.

Good but..... It’s a good app. It would be GREAT if there were a way for recipes created in the app would upload to the web, especially when you are paying the monthly or yearly fee to use the app.

Excellent app -. I've used this app for a number of years. Calculators are extremely helpful and I can use it on multiple platforms, from my phone to iPad and desktop.

No BeerXML import option. This app works very well, but the only way to import recipes is to get a gold subscription on their website. That’s a non starter for those of us who might be coming from another app (Brew Pal I’m my case, which seems to have vanished from the AppStore) and just want to bring our recipes with us! Sent them a message a week+ ago and have had no response as yet. What a waste of $5, but I’m partially to blame for not looking into the feature before purchasing the app.

I love this app. This is a great app to use when making beer recipes and having it handy to save the creative boozy inventions.

Great app with little room for improvement!. Only reason I had to give this 4 stars and not 5 is because, I run my phone in dark mode, when dark mode is enabled the text fields are also dark along with the text. So unless I switch to light mode I can’t see the text fields. Other than that I love using this app! Hopefully this issue can be solved in a later update.

Great for recipes!. And that is what I use it for. When I purchased I had a degree of trust for the product based off of the BF website. I was slightly. disappointed it doesn't contain the full range of brew tools found on the website, especially water calculations. However as I wanted it for an on the go/convenient non-internet reliant recipe creator that I knew would be reliable and accurate, I'm pleased. It works great and is easy to navigate, fairly intuitive navigation. I've used seemingly all the free online recipators and this app is worth the $5 to have on the phone, good value!

Beware. All my sessions and recipes randomly disappeared today. Don’t trust this app

Best Brewing App. I always use this brewing app, and I love it. The calculators are helpful. The recipes and checklist are easy to follow on brew day. The records are easy to reference for future batches. Great results! Highly recommended!

Don't bother, if you aren't a premium user. Wish I had known I had to have a premium account to sync with the app. I don't mind paying money for an app I'll use. I also wish I could get my money back.

Love the app need kveiks. Love the App - Can you make an update to yeast list to include current/ new releases? I can’t find kveik yeast as an option

Needs Tweaking to Work with Dark Mode. It’s a great app, but I have to switch from dark mode to light mode to be able to type in or read some fields.

Ipad Support. So far my only dislike is no Ipad support and no landscape support.

Please fix app. The 2.0 and 2.0.1 versions you released are still causing trouble with the iPhone if it’s in dark mode. All fields to fill out in a recipe or a calculator have black fills with black text so you can’t really see anything.

No iPad layout, tiny iPhone layout only use. the web app honestly

New update breaks dark mode display on iPhone X. After the new update, all input fields appear blacked out, rendering any text entered into said fields invisible on iPhone X. Did not have this problem before the update.

Works fine. App works fine. The interface is a. It outdated. Some other interactions could be streamlined. Only issue is that tells me there is a new version available, but it’s nowhere to be found in the App Store.

Missing The New App. I really miss the new app that was released last year then taken down. It became almost unusable after its removal from the store but if i was quick enough with selecting the recipe i could make it in before it would crash. Pls bring it back 🍻

Good but still lacking some features. On the whole a good app. Not quite as fully featured as Beersmith, but the selling point for me is that it is cloud based. The more I use it the more features I am finding.

Love this program. I purchased both Brewers Friend and beer smith. I find this program much easier to use and understand. I wish When you enter the hop amounts the rest of the page didn't disappear.

Don’t waste your money. You have to pay montly to register yours recepies and calcs, if you loose your application. phone resets or whatever you lost everything. Should have a unit converter integrated in the app

Looks good but needs development. I just started looking at this app and decided it would be nice to try it on my iPad. It sort of works but doesn’t take advantage of the larger screen and doesn’t rotate to landscape mode. I prefer to work in metric units but when I make that choice I don’t get an option for litres for the mash volume, just gallons or quarts? Which version? US, Imperial? I assume US but some clarity or both choices would help. As for a brew time tool, it looks pretty good. I’ll update this review once I’ve used it during a brew session.

Loaded with cool tools. Great app, even free if you do not like to sync. I would still advise to get the yearly membership for the added features. Makes it so easy to create and modify the recipes. On the side note, an update would be nice. It feels very outdated. Love it nonetheless.

Great!. Great App! Works seamlessly with the online version. Let's you build recipes easily, find others to try and edit them all to tweak to your liking! All the calculators are great, and the shopping list that links to your inventory is a great help.

Great App but.,,. The newest update (June 10) has rendered it useless. It won't even open now. Up until now I really liked it, even more so then Brewsmith.

Crucial. This app and the browser equivalent is the cornerstone of my brew day. Easy to use, and a tremendous resource that has given me predictable and repeatable results on my brew days. My only complaint is that I wish the app included all of the calculators and features of the browser version (especially after paying for both the app and a premium browser account so I can sync and save multiple recipes). I still have to go back to my laptop for a few things, which seems unnecessary. They should offer the same features across the board. At least the style guidelines have finally been updated to BJCP 2015 on the app though! That was a big downfall for a long time with recipes not syncing correctly. I really do love Brewer's Friend, crucial for me. Recommended.

Mr. Awesome app! I love to find new recipes and match the grains and malts so I can have what the ale (I love brewing ales) and gravity to match to and look. It telling me in the brew when to add malts, hops and honey is a big help. Love it! And you will to!

No Inventory or Shopping List. I am a premium member and heavy user of Brewer’s Friend web site. The most disappointing thing about this app is the lack of the Shopping List and Inventory features available on the full web site. The whole point of a mobile app is for use when you’re away from a full computer, like when you’re shopping for your next brew session, when you need the shopping and inventory lists at hand. As it is now, I have to pull up the web site on my phone, obviating the need for a paid mobile app. Please add these features to make the mobile app worth the cost!

Great purchase. For just a few dollars, you can have a great program that helps you to track and record your brews. While it is not the absolute end all be all, it is definitely a great start. After all, a little math has never hurt anyone (assuming you were born AFTER the enlightenment period). Cheers. 🍻

Great place to keep all files. I no longer keep manual journal for recipes, notes, brew logs, etc... It is all right here in one awesome app. Thank you.

Very Useful. I have found this app to be easy to use, accurate, and very useful. It has settings for all brewing styles and TONS of ingredients. If you are new to home brewing or very experienced, this app is for you.

Leaves one wishing for more.. The features are well thought out but a $7 app should be more compatible to other available apps and have the ability to search recipes and sync data regardless of your membership level. Add that to the fact that you'll have to fork out another $3 for a yeast pitch rate and calculator app, you will likely lean towards an app like Beer Smith that offers more and then some.

A must have for brewers. No need to write your recipes down anymore put them in on the computer or your phone and go from there!

BrewersFriend vs BeerSmith2. BrewersFriend wins. The Smith is ubiquitous and it does everything you'd want but it not as user friendly. The Friend is easier. I spent the $8.99 after forking out $9.99 for Smith. Don't waste the $9.99....

I like the website, LOVE the app!. I find the interface to be more user friendly than the website, it's more customizable and the brew timer is super useful while I'm sipping a few beers during the boil. Totally worth the $$ to me.

Good app. I'm able to create recipes quickly and easily and look them up while at the brew store. I can also tweak them on the fly depending on which malts, hops and yeast are available.

Fantastic and Robust. A really great app that helps you to create your own great beer recipes and helps out on brew day keeping everything straight. Very intuitive design and easy to use. Only thing I wish it did was give you the options to print your recipe or post it online to a social media outlet. You can link to their website but their website is a paid user subscription based page.

Now it works!. The latest version just bombed out immediately on my iPhone, but after updating to iOS 8.3 it works great on the iPhone and on the iPad. Probably the most intuitive brewing software I have used.

Adequate. Not a bad app. It seems to be good for writing and saving recipes. It is really good at keeping track of what stages your brews are in, from planning to gone and several stages in between. There's plenty of places to keep detailed notes on different brews. Brew day is a little frustrating, as the built in timers disappear if you switch apps while using the timers, like checking email or Facebook. If the app stops running in the background when you're using the timers, you won't be able to get back to the active timer. You will still get a notification when it's time to add hops, etc., but you won't be able to see for yourself how much time is left.

Must have brewer's app. This is a must have app for any homebrewer who likes to create and save recipes on the fly. Brewers friend is by far the most user friendly brewing software available today. Only critique is there is no way to delete recipes that you have saved.

Great brewing software. It would be great to be able to merge the online UI with this product or to be able to move over the recipes I have in the free version (which I've had to keep on my phone...) but it basically does the job with good calculators and a broad database of malts, hops, and yeasts.

Needs the calculators. Brewers Friend website has all kinds of calculators, but the app does not. Why not? I was expecting to see strike water calculators, priming sugar calculators, etc. Currently you have to go the website, use the calculators, then feed the numbers into your recipe builder

Satisfied Customer. I've been brewing successfully for over four decades and have used various methods to formulate recipes and track results. This app has been my best brewing friend ever. My results are 100% satisfactory and I've learned a lot.

Good app, until you have a problem. I've used this app for a few months now and it worked fine. Now I have a problem that keeps recurring and it is impossible to get an answer. They want you to contact them through their forum and then they do not respond. I can't recall ever getting an update, either.

Great streamlined brewing app. Does exactly what I want for the price. Not as capable as the website but I don't want something that complex. I want a streamlined brewing app that I can iterate recipes in and Brewer's Friend does exactly that.

Getting better with each release.. Updating my earlier review. As I've been using the brewersfriend site for a while now, I was very excited to see this hit the app store along with new features on the website. Initially, the lack of sync with the brewersfriend site was a problem. Now, each release seems to be bringing the app closer to a matched feature set with the site. Yes, I upgrade my acct on the site to premium before the iOS app came out, so was ready for it when sync support happened. It is very nice to be able to at least see my recipes and brew sessions now, but there's still some bugs and room to grow. That said, I've upgraded my review by a star because it looks like this app is going to keep getting better.

Website is better!. I was hoping the app would have the same great calcs as their website, but there are actually fewer. The last update was 2013 per their website if that tells you anything. The best thing is the ability to store recipes (something Apple notes does as well).

Great app but... I use this app every brewday. I don't like the fact that I have to buy the premium version AND the desktop version to use all the features. I would rather pay a blended price for both. That said, the app is great and the support is even better.

Cloud misleading. Rating is for the upgrade not the app. Here "cloud" means synch to a brewers friend premium account. Perhaps what some want, but disappointing to buy an app and have a key upgrade require you to buy an online account even if all you want is to synch your iPhone and iPod recipes and perhaps print your recipe on brew day. At a minimum there should be iTunes synch and recipe/log backup and export/import as part of the app I hope this app isn't heading toward being a "front end" for the premium account. "Buy the app and then pay for the premium account" to get basic functionality.

Great tool. The ability to sync up to recipes, use the timer, and access recipes makes this app great.

Weak UI; cost is BS. The fact that this won't sync unless you shell out an additional $15 per year is a rip off. Additionally, the UI is at least 4 generations old. This is a glorified WebKit app for $5. It's not worth it, just use your free account and a laptop. I like the features of this app, but it shouldn't cost over $1.99. I would not have bought it had I known.

So close and yet so far.. I love the Brewer's Friend website, and use it for all my recipe creation, inventory management, and brew sessions. Unfortunately the app falls far short of the standard set by the website. The absence of inventory & shopping functions is especially galling since the store is one of the places you're most likely to have your phone rather than laptop. The inability to sort brew sessions (or hide completed ones) is a pain, as is the inclusion of every single snapshot in the recipe list (especially since they're not differentiated in any way). With a few tweaks, this could be a real help; as it is it's only marginally useful.

Paid the money... Oh wait, need to pay more money.. Spent the $9, hoping to get all the added features, like syncing with other recipes and devices. Nope, still only a trial run of their monthly service you need to pay for. This just gets you to delete your batches. Thanks so much for barely anything.

Not fully functional. You can sync and get your recipes and brew sessions on any device. But you can just as easily link to their web site from any device, where for a separate fee you have access to the full range of resources including various calculators and recipe searches. Which is more useful,so I have no actual need for this app, so it was a waste of money.

Don't brew without this app. I've used others and they have value but this app is the best I've come across. I use it for almost everything I do in terms of beer recipe design & on brew day. The full version is worth every penny.

Excellent brewing app. This is my go to app for doing homebrew recipes and planning brew sessions. I recommend this app to all of my homebrewer friends. Highly recommended

I use this app all the time.. Great app to have on your phone when brewing. Quick calculations for hydrometer temp, dilution, and abv. Great for coming up with new recipes when away from a computer.

Great app. Use it every time I brew. Wish cloud sync was available without an extra fee since I am already paying for this app.

Great app. Useful, but having Snapshot Recipes and regular recipes on the same tab is annoying. Just using a camera icon doesn't cut it. Especially if I have many snapshots of one recipe. Instead of "snapshots" just use brew dates or batch codes or a separate tab for snapshots.

Most Useful Tool in My Home Brewery. This app is awesome. AWESOME. Right on my phone, I now have access to a variety of incredibly useful tools and calculators, and the ability to save and edit all my recipes. In addition, the Brew Session feature is great to keep track of all the steps and additions on brew day. I also like the user interface on the app a lot better than the website, and also unlike the website I can use and save an unlimited number of recipes and brew sessions without a subscription. The app is a little pricey, but oh-so totally worth it.

GREAT FLICKING APP!. SG calcs are pretty good. I love the ability to calc IBU for your recipe. And it will tell you how close your recipe specs match against styles along with estimated alcohol levels. The cost is negligible compared to brewing a 5 gal batch of beer.

Great App. It's nice to have this in my phone when discussing my recipes with friends or knowing what I have going on with my brews and what stage they are in. Would be nice to have the shopping list on it.

What more could you ask for.. This is the app that I use to brew all the time. I love how easy everything is to setup and brew. It has a ton of features that allow me to really have fun and keep my beers flowing. Has a few minor bugs from time to time. One that really sucked was I switched from the app to XM Radio to stream it. When I went back to the app the timer had reset so I had to adjust my timers for how long was left for the boil. I always keep two clocks. The only thing it seems that this app won't do is brew the beer for me. ;)

Great app. Agree with a previous reviewer that it would be nice to be able to copy a recipe within the app to allow modification while retaining the original recipe. Also, sync seems to have some issues from time to time when modifying a recipe on both a computer and iPhone. Overall a great app.

Helpful Brewers App. The app is much faster than the mobile web version of Brewers Friend. I'm able to tweak recipes quickly and easily, making real choices based on the apps feedback on the final beer. I've converted partial mash recipes to all grain without any hassle and changed ingredients on the fly. I don't have a premium account so I haven't tested synchronizing with the website, but I don't know if that needed as the app is pretty good.

Awesome app. I've been brewing for a few years started with extract....bottles now with all grain and kegs this app will teach u how to brew better beer if u are like me I love and only brew session IPA and the hopping category is geared for hoppy Brewers I always formulate recipes with this app since its on my phone and not the pc It's real time data in my fingertips on brew day

$5 well spent. This app is quite helpful when making recipes. It calculates ABV, IBU, OG target FG. Also helps you know if your recipe is true to the style you're aiming for.

Great brewing software!. The best brewing software package I've used. Sync between web and app versions is seamless. Calculations are right on. Good note tracking features. Highly recommended!

Nice app.. App works well with full version on computer. Would be great to have a ingredient shopping list for recipes created as well as ingredients on hand (inventory). Keep the updates coming. Recommend this app

Excellent for Nano-Brewers. I've used all the major brewery calculator programs over the years. Recently BeerSmith2 was my favorite. But since I'm going pro and need calculations for up to 10BBL, (315 gallons) this program exceeds everything else. Buy this, and the additional Yeast Starter program too. There is a HUGE difference in calculation real brewer needs VS a 5.5 gallon batch and this program will do everything. Wish I bought this before.

App doesn't support syncing and hasn't been updated...be aware.. Yeah I have a bone to pick. "Cloud" sync? Don't think so, you people need to look up the use if the term "cloud" because your app, while nice in some respects, does NOT sync with anything unless you pay some ridiculous fee to a website that isn't even maintained.

Badly needs updated. I am a premium member and heavy user of Brewers Friend, as other reviewers have also said. I have tried to leave feedback on the web page, but have not received a response. This app needs to be updated: - Beer styles need to be the same as the web page, which has been updated to conform to the 2015 Guidelines. At this point, new styles are mis-identified when recipes are synced to this app. - This app needs to allow users to sync to their inventory and shopping lists. - In my opinion, this app should include the yeast starter app, rather than having to purchase it separately.

Good tool but still needs work. I've used the website for three brews now and it's a great site for recipe building and brewing. The app leaves something to be desired. Not all of the functionality from the site is there and for a required subscription service I expect a lot more.

Awesome. Great app! Love the ease of tweaking recipes on my phone whenever ideas come to me. Worth every penny if you're serious about your beer.

Helpful app!. This app is great. The IBU calculation seems a little high at times, but that could just be because my hops varieties are on the lower end of alpha acid content. My one big complaint is that you can't make a copy of a recipe (in order to change part of but not all of a recipe), so you either tweak the recipe and hope you have the old recipe written down, or you re-input EVERYTHING, and add your changes.
