Opensignal Speed Tests

Opensignal speed tests measure your real experience of mobile connectivity and signal. The speed test runs a 10 sec download test, 10 sec upload test and ping test to determine the speed you will likely experience. The speed test runs on common internet CDN servers. The result is calculated with the middle range of samples.

Check if you're getting the network quality you're paying for from your mobile network or internet provider. Use our coverage maps to compare networks and data speed in your area. Opensignal works with WiFi mobile broadband internet.

Video Speed Tests

Slow video load time? Video buffering? More time waiting than watching? A good average network speed isn’t enough for a great video experience. Opensignal’s video test gives you the full picture of your network experience. Opensignal video tests show you exactly what to expect with HD and SD videos.

Watch a 15 sec video snippet to test and log load time, buffering, and playback issues in real-time.
Monitor how video quality changes with time and location. Review video test results in History to see if your network experience has changed over time.

Coverage Map

Opensignal’s coverage maps show signal strength down to street level using speed test and signal data from local users. With network stats on local network operators, you can check speeds ahead of a trip, find out if you will get a signal in remote areas, check your signal against others in the area to see if you’re getting the best service, arrange the best local SIM and check the signal strength when travelling.

Worthless. First the positive: It works well providing you with a true internet speed test. Now the bad: The maps and “signal finder” are worthless. They don’t show many cell phone towers at all. I have a huge, multi-cell tower operated by my carrier a half mile from my house that’s been there for 15 years that they don’t recognize at all. When asked about that, their reply is “it’s not in our database.” As a result of that, rather than their signal pointer pointing towards that tower, it points to where there is no tower... False positives and inaccurate locations are even worse than the towers they fail to recognize. I live near Lake Michigan and their map shows a dozen towers in the middle of the lake. You may ask why it even shows a dozen towers in a relatively small area, I’ll tell you- Say a single tower has 9 cell antennas on it, this app shows it as 9 separate towers, and because the geolocation is so awful, it shows them all spread out over a mile apart. The end result is a single tower in a single location is reported as 9 different towers spread over a couple square miles, and their “signal finder” points at all those non-existent towers. Worthless.

Missing crucial features…still. I’ve deleted this app several times, and every once in a while re-install it thinking maybe it “works” now. The main issue used to Beth’s missing “follow the arrow” arrow. Well, that’s still missing. The reason for my most recent re-install is That I wanted to check signal strength on Verizon for a certain area on the map. Well, there’s a “Select Carrier” dropdown, but the only option is “All”. There’s no option for individual carriers anymore. An average of three completely separate carriers is 100% useless info. Guess I’m deleting…again.

Refreshing carriers. When checking a selected carriers coverage at first go say Verizon in trying to switch to another carrier all it keeps doing us jumping back to carrier signal 2g 4g etc . The app won’t refresh the carrier info it’s stuck on Verizon . after a few attempts it crashes with oops something went wrong and can’t get carrier data right now . Been having this issue for a while now . I just deleted the app and reinstalled so it should be on the latest version but still I have the same issue . iPhone 6 Plus iOS 11.4 . Carrier T-Maybe

Crippled apps. Opensignal & Meteor — two crippled apps that should be merged into one. On Meteor, the maps tab will show the name of the WiFi access point, but on the history tab, it will say “unknown wifi” but will allow you to edit the name. How does that make any sense. Similar issues on Opensignal, which recognizes the name of the access but then saves the name as simply Wifi under history. Mobile will also only say 5G or 4G but then does not include the network provider, which is especially helpful while roaming, nor does it include GPS coordinates like Meteor does… I could go on, but it’s hard to believe this disjointed behavior, as dysfunctional as it is, has not been purposeful.

Doesn’t actually identify cell towers. I downloaded this app primarily because I wanted to be able to identify the location of cell towers and the carriers that they belong to. I recently changed cell carriers after 20+ years with the same one and trying to learn where my new carrier has true coverage and where they don’t. The “Find Signal” feature shows all towers as being my carrier’s towers even when I KNOW that I am roaming on another carrier. Also the arrow that you’re supposed to follow to locate the tower is not based on actual tower locations, it’s based on crowd-sourcing information which is no more accurate than my own anecdotal knowledge of the area. The speed test and data usage features are helpful but they aren’t what I downloaded the app for.

Great app could use distance to tower. The direction to the nearest tower is very helpful. It would be even better if it gave a relative distance to the tower. It would be interesting if a log of speed test results including distance and direction to the tower. I end up using other Speedtest apps to keep a log of results. 3 precious results isn’t enough.

Great little app with quick, reliable information. That being said, the reason i only gave it 4 stars is because it lacks the ability to orient in any way beyond portrait mode. I use my iPad with a keyboard, putting it in landscape mode. Hard to understand why, in this day and age, apps are not written with the ability to change orientations per position of device. For my purposes, works better than Ookla, but would love developers to give it ability to orient appropriately.

Pretty good app. If everyone downloaded this app, it would be even better but you can only do so much with limited users. For some reason, when I run speed tests it seems like it always has a latency error, not sure if this is a bug or my service itself. If you select the interactive map, you can press check performance which goes through all the major carriers and lists speeds and latency with signal strength (IMO this is the best feature of the app). It would be nice to know how the app sends data back to Opensignal and the frequency that it does that. Tldr: this is a good app for all smartphone users if you are wondering about your cell phone service and reception for different areas.

What happened to directional arrow?. The only use I had for this app was to find where the nearest strongest cell signal was coming from..... it would point its arrow I. The direction I would need to point my booster antenna ...... now when I travel.... I have NO CLUE where to point it! Thanks for getting rid of the only use I had for you. UPDATE They listened and they care.... the arrow is now back. Once again.... happy with the app!!! Thanks for fixing it!

Almost perfect. I like the follow the arrow to the nearest cell tower but it is limited to only your provider. You can filter the map by any provider so you should be able to change the arrow to any provider as well. That is the only feature I need that would make it perfect for me!

Simple, clean interface. Currently using iOS 15.1 and not sure if it’s fully functional for cell tower location, but WiFi resources are solid. Unlike other apps I’ve tried, this is uncluttered, and it’s free. It helped me determine that I need a new, more efficient and powerful router at home, and it confirmed weak signal areas at work. I could not get any cell towers to show up and I know they’re nearby. Had hoped to use this app to help me with a live stream coming up soon, but not being amble to locate a cell tower is a problem.

Disappointed. I have been using this app to find towers while boondocking in the desert, it helps me point my Yagi antenna at the nearest tower. Well the latest update removed that function so this app is now just about useless as i normally only have one tower in range, I just need to know where it is, this app used to do that, no more so will have to find another way. Why you removed the best feature is beyond me. *UPDATE* I have updated my review two 4 stars as the developers have brought back the compass, which was to me the most important feature, redesigned, might want to add a direction marker at the top of the screen as it is not readily apparent which direction is the alignment point.

Paid off by cell company. I live in rural area and got this app to see if t mobile had any service here because a few years ago they did not, I use Verizon because they do have service here but it is weak but works so I went outside with this app open to see what kind of signal I could get usually around 5-10 megs and ran test a couple times and that’s what it showed , weak signal and only LTE , then I got a 5G uw signal and almost 500 megs , wow!! But as soon as I closed app back to weak LTE signal and 5- 10 megs

Odd results. I have been using this app to try and improve my cell signal by trying to determine what cell tower I’m accessing with my iPhone 8 Plus. I was within 1 mile of the cell tower I thought I was accessing and the pointer indicated a different location even though my phone signal improved as I got closer to tower to the point of having full signal ( all bars ) on iPhone. I was able to repeat this odd result with 2 different towers. Not sure why this is happening but at this point I’m not able to depend on this app to help me.

Where’s the arrow?. I had this app for a long time on my iPhone SE and I loved it, worked flawlessly. I got a 6S and downloaded the app and the arrow is gone. I deleted the app and re-downloaded it and the arrow is still gone. Some time went by and I decided to give it another try so I downloaded the app again and no luck, the arrow is still AWOL. It would be nice for the developers to figure this out and fix the problem, I’m not the only one with the complaint.

Strange issue. I have this installed on a XS Max fully unlocked. I have Visible wireless at the service provider. The app does its thing just fine, but it can’t find any cell towers. It doesn’t matter where I am, I drive all over Maryland. I could be in Ocean city or Baltimore or DC and it says it can’t find a tower. I’m assuming it’s a bug because it doesn’t know which towers Visible runs on, but it’s very frustrating when I’m trying to troubleshoot an issue of full bars, but not any connection that’s useable.

Good idea; needs improvement. I especially like that Open Signal offers competition to Ookla‘a well-known speed test apps. This app gives good real-world performance insights into each of the networks you might connect to. The app does not detect when switching Wi-Fi networks and needs to be force quit and relaunched to pick up the change. When switching from one Wi-Fi network to another, running a speed test will tag the result with the previous network name and often fail to compete the test at all. The data usage feature is interesting but doesn’t seem work either. Usage results are not updated without force quitting and relaunching the app.

Pointless. No value or info. Installed this app today August 2018 and found it to have absolutely no value. Let’s give it zero stars if possible. “Follow the arrow “ Han no directions what to or do with the results. Even when we could make it go from one bar up to two bars not really helpful otherwise. My cell phone but already give me that data without this app. Wanted to use the feature to compare multiple cell phone carriers in our area, however no data came up. Blank .... uninstalled it in same day. Would avoid this app.

One flaw with the app. One thing I wish they would fix is that the app never updates your location while it’s running so when you take multiple speed readings, even if they’re far apart, it shows in the same spot unless you quit and relaunch the app after each test.

Not that great. I’ve tried using this app numerous times to find the nearest cell tower. It has never found one. The map with signal strengths isn’t of much use since as you zoom in the green and orange areas disappear. Really? If I’m trying to find the best signal I need to see the details. Finally, Speedtest is just plain better for download and upload speeds. I don’t understand the numerous favorable reviews, maybe they’re fake?

Current version removed the arrow that pointed to connected tower. This application used to be very valuable to locate my connected tower so I could move towards it to improve my reception. It is now worthless since this function was removed. Why did they do something so dumb? The problem was corrected in early June, and as a result, I changed my rating from 1 star to 5 stars

No useful value derived from this app.. I used this app for about 10 minutes trying to locate the two cellular towers that are in my area. it doesn’t even detect them. It is based on old outdated data of previous users. Another app I use shows the exact connection point to the cellular tower in my area and the dBM. While connected to Wi-Fi at home it can provide a speed test and video test. Neither of which are very useful as I have that built in info on my network Orbi app. There is no reason to keep this app on my phone, I can’t understand the high praise or positive reviews.

Pretty simple. Pretty powerful. I like the open map that shows you where other users of the app have been and performed tests. However, in some cases it would not let me zoom in. Additionally, would be great to have more than just red and green. If the map could show at least yellow for medium signals, that would be awesome. Got a friend who wants to map his entire little town by driving every road and walking into the woods for the gaps. Also, option of showing tower locations would be great. Thanks for all your hard work.

Very useful, just a few bugs to report. Pulling up the speed test history is slow. I wish the history would show the network name. Also, when viewing the history, if the upload speed is >100 MBPS, it will record it 1 decimal point off. E.g. I got a 443 MBPS upload on my fiber, it shows it as 44.3 in the history. The download number is showing correctly.

Simple, easy, accurate, fast. I live in the country. My Internet is not good. I use this app quite frequently to check my signal strength. It works very well. I appreciate the way it tests my download, and my upload, but I also appreciate the way it tests a sample video download. Try this app, I think you’ll like it

This use to be a good app, not anymore!. This app use to be a good app. Now if your lucky it will find a tower but only one when it works at all. Using this to find the various tower locations doesn’t work at all. In my home area, I know where the Towers are but this app shows nothing. Then to add insult to injury, they want money for features we once had with the free version but lost with the upgrade. If you purchase these, it still doesn’t work. Don’t waste your time with this app, they got greedy and messed up what was once a decent app!

Excellent product. I enjoy this product. I wish it was able to identify which tower on a map it was using during the test. Others than that it’s very accurate.

Finally found a signal.. I didn’t get this app at first. I had no signal at all at home. I knew there was a tower nearby because I had 65 plus mbs just 5/miles away. Turns out, the tower is even closer. I took the phone to the south east part of my house where the tower is. I couldn’t believe it. Sitting in my cupboard, my iPhone got 2 bars LTE. It still has no signal anywhere else even outside.. I connected my laptop. Updated the iOS. Now, I am getting 11-12mbs consistently. Kind of strange, but I never would have located that tower without this app.

Slightly Useful. App is slightly useful for speed testing, though it lacks any real informative data about your connection or distant end. As far as pointing towards a cell tower, that has NEVER worked no matter where I try. In the city with a billion towers or out in the remote desert, never. (I’m on AT&T) Crowdsourcing only works in a static environment with say, a crowd. My remote location never shows any data despite my app usage, but locally AT&T has changed equipment & possibly towers over the past year. Makes older data useless.

Worth the price. Only 15MB of space and no identifiers. Doesn't do much on LTE but it does more than nothing. It gives some info for my local rural tower but that info is in conflict with real collected data that isn't readily available to public. Go ahead and give it full permissions because it doesn't do anything naughty. I hope it improves! cheers

Completely Useless!. I downloaded this app based on the recommendation of a cell signal booster company. They clearly have had a different experience than mine. The most important feature, finding a cell tower, simply does not work. Sitting in an area that, by my own phone’s indication has a 2-bar ATT signal, the app says it cannot find ANY cell tower, This area is also well known to have a solid Verizon and T-Mobile signal. Location services on my phone are turned-on and functional, so I cannot fathom what value this app actually provides. Download it if you feel compelled to clutter your phone with another icon. Otherwise, do not waste your time.

New version removed the most useful function!. [Updated, 8 June 2020]: Changed my rating to 3 stars now that the signal compass feature has been restored (as of app version 5.2.2). Would give it another star except that the upload part of the speed test feature consistently fails for me (starts, but fails with message “Error”). Of 24 speed tests, only 3 completed that part of the test. —— Just updated the app (to version 5.0.3) only to discover that the most useful function has been removed: the cell tower signal direction indicator!!! That feature has been used by many people over the years, like me, to determine in which direction to point the antenna of my cell signal booster in order to obtain the best connection. It totally makes no sense at all why the developers would choose to remove that function, and also to not announce it in the version release notes. Two thumbs down! This app is now mostly useless. The speedtest function hasn’t worked reliably or at all most of the time for over a year. And the cell signal mapping is mostly useless because of low participation outside of large metropolitan areas, and if you’re in such an area you’re likely to get a good signal anyway.

Is it your phone or is the internet down?. This app is the easiest way to answer many questions including questions like, “does this phone provider have good coverage in my area?”

On its way to success... The application is different than the rest, with the idea of a compass directing you to the nearest tower. And the ability to check the speed of you Wi-Fi’s, download, upload, and latency. The people that write a negative review forget a couple of things.. First, the application is Free! There is so much a free application can do without it being a “ Professional Technician “ and charge you. Second, even though some of things on the app have bugs, I believe that’s the reason why updates were created. Third and last, the developer of the application is actually responding your entitled reviews and fixing the issue that you complain about because you can’t afford a professional to fix your internet. Lol!

Easy to use but frustrating. While the testing is easy to use, the frustrating part is that I cannot get it to show me any cell towers. Keeps telling me that there seems to not be any towers here and I’m in the middle of a high density data area in a very populated city. I don’t understand the message just says that there are no cell towers. I’m suspecting that when I get out on the road and try to use it, I will be told that I cannot find any cell towers even though there may be some around me. That’s a portion that I would really like to see work. I’m on an iPhone.

App isn’t useful to me with new version. I used this app to find cell towers as we travel full time and I used it to point our cell phone booster. They removed the tower locator and arrow function. These were the most useful features to me. There are better options for a speed test app. Not sure why they took away a key differentiator. The app went from 5-star and exactly what I needed to 1-star with no features I need. ** Developer added back compass function to see direction to only closest tower. It’s better but being able to tap the compass and see the locations of all towers was most useful. Sometimes closest the tower is obstructed and it works better to point cell booster toward a different antenna. I’ll add one star back for bringing back an in-demand feature back. But the app still isn’t as useful to me as a cell tower map.

Follow the Arrow? Yep. Downloaded the app and it appears the directional arrow has been re-implemented. Don’t know if it was an update glitch or whatever, but the app is now useful! This app worked at one time but no longer has the directional arrow indicating the direction of the cell tower. This function was key when installing a directional cell signal booster antenna. Now that it no longer works, deleted the app. Not recommended if you need to identify the source of your strongest signal.

No cell tower compass. I like the app but the compass for the cell tower doesn’t work for me. I am using iPhone 13 and it just won’t work. I reinstalled it and still same thing. All permissions granted to it. I read that it was once a feature the removed it. Then I saw about a year ago they put it back in after bug fixes etc. I really wish I could utilize this feature.

Difficult to use. Much of this app is tough to figure out. The first screen says, “Follow the arrow” but there is no arrow. Pressing the icon for the cell provider takes me to a map of my current location. I can type an address and it takes me there, but it took me a while to zoom out far enough to see a tower location. These are just labeled, with no indication of signal coverage. (Update: after an hour, an arrow appeared! 5 minutes later it pointed in the opposite direction in each case it did not appear to point towards a tower) WiFi didn’t make sense either until I zoomed much further out. The coverage map is crowd sourced, so understandably sparse. I’d add to it if I could. I thought the app might be auto logging my data, since I allowed that, but I haven’t seen any updates to the map around me. Unfortunately, the different signal strengths are in colors that are difficult to distinguish for someone who is red/green colorblind (as I am). Speed test and data usage work as expected, though these were not features I’m looking for.

Not like it used to be :c (UPDATED). I used to love it. I needed it to find closed carrier towers and it did it better than any other app that tried. But then they took that away and now it’s just like every other speed test app. I don’t know what to think about it now :/ June 2020 UPDATED: It’s back to 5 stars! Thanks so much for putting the signal compass back in here!

Nice idea but not useful. Nice idea here, but like others rating this app, I NEVER see any cell towers! I use VZW in the US like many, but regardless of where I go, I never see towers. Even if I allow “roaming” I still never see towers. That is originally why I was interested in the app... to try to nail down why I have poor signal strength near home even though I see towers in my line of sight! As for the speed tests... useless as they do not tell you where the other end is or how many hops, and you can’t choose test locations. Sooooooo.... meh. Sorry. I will maybe keep it on my phone for a little while, but will likely just let it go quietly away someday when I need to purge unused apps. Nice try but not working or useful * AS ADVERTISED * .

No way to change video settings. NO problem whatsoever running the speed test, however, the video is another matter. It began at 320p despite my download speed registering well over 200mps just before switching to the video test. I tried again, this time, 720p. There is no way to test it at 1080p let alone 4K. So at what speed will one have to have from their isp in order to test 1080p or 4K?

Getting worse. Much worse.. 1. After the iOS 13 update, the signal readings on the map became almost translucent, they’re pretty hard to see, especially in dark mode. Ok, fine. I get it’s difficult transitioning to a whole new iOS platform. BUT.... 2. The the maps keep loading slower and slower. Utterly terrible. It’s almost unusable, even on strong solid WiFi connections.

Switched Carriers. I switched carriers from Mint (T-Mobile) to Verizon, but the application still lists “Mobile” as my carrier. I’ve deleted the app and downloaded it again from the App Store but there appears to be no way to reset the carrier information in your app. I can only assume that my app is now uploading bad data into your database (Verizon signal data with Mint / T-Mobile name attached to it) so I’m not sure what this says about the quality of the rest of your data.

Compass Directional Arrow. I was starting to get interested in this app but was testing out the accuracy of the tower directional compass when it abruptly quick working. Not sure what happened but without that feature working and working properly this app is completely useless. There are many good speed test apps out there that do the same if not better then this one. What distinguished this app from the others was the tower compass arrow but it quick working. Looks like it’s time to move on again.

Never points to a real cell site.. I’m an RF Technician and worked in the cellular industry for 20 years. Have used a lot of various test equipment and Cell phones to verify cell signals, I know how to pinpoint a cell site. This app never pointed to an actual cell tower or cell repeater. It has zero value for locating the site you’re phone is working off of. If you used the actual signal from the actual tower the phone is locked onto, then it would be great. App will be deleted shortly if no change is made.

Crash. I have installed and deleted this app several times. It worked fine the first time I opened it but after closing and reopening it failed to operate correctly. I found if I deleted and the reinstalled from the cloud it would operate correctly one time then would have to be deleted again and reinstalled before using again. Great idea, hope you can get the bugs out. Good luck!

Great app but needs some tuning.. Been using this app for over a year now and it seems to really gives you the best average speed test rather than maximum speed. I have Ookla SpeedTest and I use it to compare the differences of its performance and Ookla (and other speed test app) does only give you what your cell signal/Wi-Fi maximum speed is and Open Signal gives you the real speed that you’re always averaging. This app would be perfect if the developer can make it for you to delete your old test records (you can but it comes back after resetting the app) and needs to add location to where you test your signal and Wi-Fi so you can keep track of where you had already test the signal. There seems to be a problem with the find cellular signal. I’m standing right next to my cellular sever (T-Mobile) and it’s pointing away from it?. Other then that this is a great speed test app. 3 stars for now.

So hopeful this would work!. I downloaded this app after seeing is referenced and recommended by several fellow RVers I mainly wanted to use the tower locator/signal compass feature. Unfortunately I have yet to get it to work. I always get the same “No cell tower located” error. If I am doing something wrong, I certainly can’t figure it out. If I can get that feature to work reliably it would be an easy 5 star app. The other features (speed tests and coverage maps) earned the 2nd star but the most important feature to me just doesn’t work. Would happily take Dev suggestions.

The #1 tool for the Security & Fire alarm industry. OpenSignal is the best, most important cellular testing tool I have as a professional in the Security & Fire Alarm industry. This free, amazingly easy to use, comprehensive testing & tower locator tool insures that the cellular communicators that we install are using the best carrier available based on signal strength, data latency upload/download speed testing that I perform myself at every location I go to. For me and those in my industry, OpenSignal insures top performance when seconds means the difference in life or death. Having a tool in your hand that tests cellular performance from the exact location you are at, is a dream come true for those who’s job is to secure property, protect jobs, and save lives. No matter where you are, you know whether you can use the cellular communicators internal antenna or if you will need an outdoor antenna because of the distance you are from a tower or the buildings size or the structures building material blocks the cellular signal. In those areas that a long-range directional antenna is required, OpenSignal shows me exactly where to point my antenna. As a 33 year veteran of the Security & Fire Alarm Industry. I recommend everyone that uses cellular communications to get this app, it’s a Life Saver figuratively and Literally.

Killed wifi. I wanted an app to help me optimise my wifi so searched App Store and found this app. Checked the reviews and all seemed ok, installed app and proceeded to checkout my wifi only to find I wasn’t connected to my home wifi. Checked the other phones and they were still working. Moved right next to the router, still no signal, rebooted phone, still no signal, deleted app, wifi back working ok.

Position of speed test not always accurate.. Did several tests without moving. Checked back and the position of one was way off. This could give false data which makes me doubt the accuracy and reliability of this App. Tower pin pointing hasn’t worked yet but I concede it is my first day of use.

Useless. Doesn't show any 3G towers nearby....

Nice!. Great concept.

Nice - but some work to do. Nice GUI but could do with simple additions 1) why does the map require such a high level view that you can't zoom in to anything of use. You need to be able to zoom in at least at a hundred meters 2) would love to show nearby cell towers, not just wifi 3) more info on signal strength, if I just wanted it represented as a few dots, I have the inbuilt ios 5 dots for that. Love to see real db and noise levels.

Inaccurate. Latest update gives completely inaccurate results on upload speeds. Not worth having if the results cannot be relied upon.

Excellent update!. A victory to privacy, this update gives us the choice to stop sharing data when the app is running on the background. This app is super recommended to anyone, check it out. Awesome speed tests for WiFi as well as for cellular. Awesome coverage maps for cellular updated all the time just by keeping the app open and contributing to the community

So much more than just Speed. Love this app

Not Quite There Yet (in Oz). Plot of Mobile Reception spots is working well. Plot of Free WiFi also good. But Plot of Cell Towers and Listing of Carriers now fails.

Interesting. It's all about the maps

It works. Wifi and tower signal strength status - it works. But it does chew a lot of battery in no time so use the app wisely!

Great App!. This app is stunning. It really helps to find the best service at any spot, and gives a good idea of the mobile company that has the best coverage. Well done guys!

Disappointed. I’ve been using this app for about 6 months now. It’s works really great for a while then when a update happens it throws you out and says no network connection. When you have connection, please fix this problem as I do like using this app.

Severe Data Drainer. Nice but using a lot of data.

Not fully functional. Doesn’t show connection to any nearby towers. Just says “no cell tower located”.

Open Signal. Great app, use it everyday, very informative & helpful.

5G. Will you be adding 5G capability anytime soon?

Crash at launch.... This new version don't work. Just crashes. Totally unresponsive.

Crashes on startup ios7. I try an open the app, i see it for a split second then crashes.

Does not work with dual SIM. When the iPhone has 2 active SIM, OpenSignal stops working if the physical SIM does not have mobile data enabled. If the physical SIM is turned off, the app can show the nearby towers for the eSIM, but it incorrectly uses the network name of the physical SIM.

Inaccurate in Australia. It plots cell towers in the water and sometimes tells me my best signal is coming from the direction of out to sea.

Blood helpful. The app is already helpful by showing you where signal is strongest according to which carrier. Letting you know it's best to go off 3G and save on mobile phone battery from trying to find a signal.

Missing base station location. I first used this app to find out which tower I was connecting to, after an update this function appears to have been removed or hidden somewhere within the app.

Fault. The latest update has killed the video test, tries to open and closes

Still buggy. Be alright if I could get it to work right without freeze ups or crash's, and also unresponsive. Needs rechecking.

Brilliant. New update full of features. The coverage map is now fed by users so the telcos can no longer put lipstick on a pig.

Simple to use. This is a great app to work out just what speed and more important the carrier in the area, what it needs is an automatic data testing and update to the web so if you are driving around and area it can make / update data rate transfer maps. As apart from that a very cool application.

Flaky. Doesn't work half the time. Can't be bothered anymore. Deleted.

Useful for assessing network stats. Really handy when checking signal quality. I only use it for the sake of information, but the sleek design and coverage maps are pretty cool. Unfortunately it seems the upload test still fails though.

Doesn’t monitor. I downloaded this because the description said it could monitor drop outs, it can’t . It only runs a check for 10 seconds.

Limited in Oz. Some features are handy like the speedtest, & network comparison. Wouldn't want to use this long-term, because it constantly consumed battery & some data with settings set to report. The nearest cell tower feature is non-existent in Adelaide at least, same goes for the Wi-Fi hotspot lookup.

Needs work. Pretty useless ATM. Most features don't seem to work correctly and it really hits the battery hard. Good idea just not quite there yet. Fix issues and I'll be back

Love this app!. Thank you for bringing back the compass. Very handy

Great app. This app works great, I just wanted to point out a small typo. When doing a Speedtest on Wi-Fi the app spells it as “Wifi” when it should spell it “Wi-Fi”

New release drops Cell tower location and signal compass. Not happy. De-installing the app.

iOS version sucks. The coverage map is super glitchy and shows errors saying oops something went wrong.

Doesn’t work with Canadian Iphone. My phone uses ATT in the US, but the app only tries to locate Roger’s towers, which don’t exist down here. No way found to tell app to locate ATT towers, so no use for me!

Complete garbage. Shows towers where there is no tower and shows all towers around me as Fido. We don't have Fido. Absolutely garbage. Has you looking in the middle of the bush for a tower that does not exist when actual tower is 180 degrees away !!!

Signal Section. I don't understand how to read your Signal Section. It shows as number of bars per provider which is the same. When I click on arrow UP it rearranges and I assume it is by the best coverage on top but a couple of times it was showing less signal bars with the provider on top. It's confusing. Can you fix that?

Garbage. I work for bell mobility in Atlantic Canada. Shows towers where I know none exist and doesn't show the towers I know are there. Towerlocator app is spot on try that one

Would be good if the towers existed. Went walking around today since I saw towers on here that weren’t on Tower Locator. Turns out they don’t actually exist. If it wasn’t for this I might like the app

Doesn't work. Wont do a speed test on iPhone 5

Great for directing me to get reception. Totally saves me from black spots in downtown Vancouver, great around Dunsmuir and Georgia. The stats page is also really cool

Need code. Stupid aps need code no posible to get

Great app. It’s very rare that I actually like an app. This app does everything it promises and works great. Really helps with precisely aiming directional cell signal booster antennas. And don’t worry, WiFi is not a typo. You can spell it as Wi-Fi, WiFi, WiFi, wifi, it all means the same thing; wireless fidelity.

Works well. Easy to use and helped us figure out the truth about our service. We switched providers. Cogeco is much better than Bell in our neighborhood.

No Map Updates. I’ve used this app for a long time, however none of my submitted results have appeared on the map. To me this means nothing is accurate. How old are the displayed readings?

Great concept, not enough data. I live in a fairly big city, but there is not much coverage data shown on the map. I wish the iOS version of this app allowed me to contribute coverage data to help improve it.

Another Tracking app.. Stop the tracking.

Quick and efficient. Good quick app provides the information in one place

Was ok, but most recent update broke things. I also note that as others said, it doesn’t have the towers right. Used to be able to give a reasonable speed test, but not any more at home (shows error on upload, incorrect number on download). Also thinks work network and home network are the same even though the SSID’s and MAC’s are different. How do you get it right at first and then break it unless you’re doing completely inadequate testing before release? That was for the previous release. Now it doesn’t show the upload error, but it either rounds or truncates my upload speed on the speed test history, showing nothing past the decimal point and shows my upload speed to be 0 when it is less than 1 Mbps. That should be easy to fix.

Warning. This app is not accurate! It also uses A LOT of data! Do not use this app unless you have an unlimited data plan!

Doesn’t even work. I know I have bad service where I live but outside I have 1 -2 bars and it says can’t find towers or signal near me... waste of time

Use this before getting into a contract. This app's network rank feature was really helpful for figuring out which provider has the best signal at my university and saved me from getting into a 3 yr contract with a mediocre provider. Thanks opensignal!

Why?. Shows cell towers where none exist.

Awesome! 👍. I love this app!

Old version was better. Previous version had features I needed but current one does not. Used to be able to see what direction the closest tower was and identify towers and providers. Now those are gone. Please bring them back.

Résultats?. On voit des chiffres mais on ne peut en tirer des conclusions

Would be good if it worked. 2 stars for trying. The app doesn’t even connect to the network - on a iPhone 11 Pro Max. Open Signal seems to be a great idea but it’s not there at all. They have a lot of work to do.

What drug did you take. Using an inverted pantagram in the first app screenshot people see Is realy ankward and hostile. Also. Its 0 stars. Not 1 stars. Just to make things clear

App has become more broken with time. Speed test no longer works reliably, coverage map doesn’t load properly, seeing only small squares within the view, with coverage data never filling the map view. Makes it basically useless.

Mr. I'm trying to locate towers in fringe areas and I wish the app would give tower ID so its identity and location could be independantly checked.

Terrible. Terrible apps doesn’t work worth $hitt!!

Useless. Absolutely useless, show you just users no towers. Unfortunately is not zero star option

Why?. Can't even show my signal for crowd sourcing. Useless.

The arrow to find an antenna returned. Great. The arrow to find an antenna returned. Great

Map is now fixed. Map was broken, but they finally fixed it. They also added a new video-testing feature. 10 times as useful as it was when it was broken. Thanks for fixing it!

Mostly Worthless. I got this app to find the nearest cell towers in a rural location with a weak signal. It has never worked for that purpose. The app always says that I have "No Signal" and that I am in Airplane Mode. The app has permission to access my location, Airplane Mode is off, and I do have a signal. Speed test is the only function that works, but is no better than other apps.

No towers????. Though there’s a tower locator on the app, I think in two years of using the app and traveling over 24,000 miles I have only seen it locate a tower two times. And that’s for Verizon network. That just seems like somethings not right to me.

Will Sprint come back?. Love the app. But seems that Sprint has disappeared, yes I am one of the few Sprint people, but works great where I am 95% of the time. I tried reaching support, but could not find an email or contact us easily. Any suggestions? And thank you for great app.

Bug report. (Surely another way). I have an iPhone 10xs with the esim connected to AT&T, active, and a European sim in the card slot, turned off. And, I am in Seattle. But the app thinks I want to use the European sim. Well, at least the app starts up, but beyond that, it is trying hard to use the European sim

Best cell tower map I've found, but I want to toggle operators. As someone who has at&t phone and Verizon hotspot service, I'd like to be able to toggle between operators in the cell tower map view so that I can see both at&t towers as well as Verizon towers on the map.

Kind of works!!. Original tests, data usage and comparing performance works for the most part; however, find signal doesn’t find squat. Which is what I really needed it for. I know there’s cellular towers in the area. I’m looking at one but yet the app evidently has its eyes closed shut. Needs work for sure!!

Horrible app. Downloaded it because I thought it would let me see coverage stats zoomed in at street level but it doesn’t let you zoom in that well. Also, has no information for 5G in my region even though every major carrier offers 5G in the area. Wasted time and space downloading this.

Meh. This used to be an excellent app. But now it’s meh. Says can’t find towers, average download speed for my area is 28-35, yet my phone can’t get higher than 4.2. I’m not sure how one can go so backwards, from a reliable and useful app to, nothing it’s saying makes sense now. Bummers.

Map with towers still missing in newest update. In the new update that came out today the compass is back but the map that shows the closest cell towers to location is still missing that was in previous versions to show where all cell towers were on map. Please bring back feature!

Liked it better before. Felt more useful when it contributed signal data in the background. Now it only does when I have the app open, kind of defeating the purpose of crowdsourcing the signal data. Video test doesn't load anything and then crashes. But it's labeled as beta anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

WiFi speed test. Far better than any other speed test I have tried. Simple, easy and fast. What more would you want?

In the history would like to see the name of the net work. In the history would like to see the name of the network included. Been asking for this for years. Makes application more usable.

Buggy. Fix your app guys. Good on you for monetizing our data, at the very least fix your maps so we can see the data we’ve all contributed. I tried this app on two separate phones and it was buggy on both. Only portions of the map are overlayed with data when zoomed out. And zooming in shifts the data around so it makes me unconfident on where the data really was taken from.

Compass does not work. I was hoping to use this app to verify the closest Verizon tower to my house. I’m at one bar in my home. As I drive towards the tower I suspect being my local tower, the signal got stronger and stronger (the bars increased). However, the compass could not find any local towers. I literally parked underneath the tower and it still didn’t see it. I was at 4 bars. Location was enabled and I verified this when using the map. Very disappointed.

App less comprehensive than previous. My husband has a version of this app ... and his menu looks completely different than mine. He has the ability to FIND SIGNAL. I also need the ability to find a signal so I know where to point my WeBoost antenna... without this ability, this app is useless for me. We are full time RVers. I have an iPhone 8 with the latest version 13.3.1.

Cell tower locator not working. I only got this because of the cell tower locator feature, only to find it isn't actually working. I see the arrow and it points to something, but there's nothing else on that page, so, pretty disappointed about that. The speed test sort of works, but gives error on the download part of the test, so, not so useful. The whole thing is basically pointless.

What does this app actually do??. Downloaded this app at the recommendation of several websites so I can locate towers and the best signal for me to install my cell booster. Open it up and you’re greeted with a “Follow the arrow” prompt. WHAT ARROW? Next, you click the center of the screen that takes you to a map of user-contributed coverage spots. Ok so maybe that’s useful.... but, where’s the cell tower locations and other info that was inferred in the description. Sorry, no 1/2 star option so you get one by default.

App needs an update. It needs update to show which tower you’re connected see you when you were using Esim

OpenSignal is a good program and accurate data. I like the idea of crowd sourcing instead of relying on advertisers who claim great data but have nothing. Thanks for doing something we can rely on. That’s what the Internet is supposed to be like.

Well Needed Update. incredible new update that looks way better than it did before and performs way smoother especially for higher speeds. really, great job and kudos to everyone on the team.

Biased. Super biased app like someone is paying the developers to flaunt inaccurate data. They show T-Mobile as the best in pretty much all locations even in areas where I know for a fact that T-Mobile doesn't work like on Camp Pendleton, Ca no one really has T-Mobile because of the crappy service but everyone has ATT and we get service crystal clear in most places. Do not recommend this app

Can no longer find towers. This used to be a useful app to find the closest cell tower. However Apple in their infinite wisdom has removed access to the cell signal info from their APIs on newer iPhones and under iOS 14. So the find closest tower function is now completely broken. Makes this app pretty useless now. I know it’s not the developers fault. I hope they can convince Apple to add those interfaces back. We really need them.

+ & -. Works great as far as giving the speed info. Just wish it would tell us what we can do to get the carrier to do something. Would appreciate it giving info on what frequency it’s picking up so that the correct signal booster is needed.

Amazing app. I use this app daily. Literally. I live in the middle of bfe so my WiFi does some crazy stuff all the time and to test it this is what I use. It works flawlessly and I love it. Definitely recommend this app

Good so far. I’d like to be able to schedule speed and video tests and retain the results to track my ISPs service. As I work from home I need to know that I have consistent and reliable service.

Does not work unless you’re with a major carrier. This app used to work with Verizon. When I switched to T-Mobile and then Optimum (which uses T-Mobile) the app cannot ever find a tower. The app is useless if you don’t have Verizon. You also can’t select different carriers around you to see what tower is closest to you. Which would be very helpful for us out in the country trying to find the nearest provider. Please fix

Can’t see cell coverage close. So if you try to see cell coverage zoomed in it just disappears. You have to view it from far away so you can barely see it. Also if ask to see where cell towers are I’m not sure what it’s showing you because most of what it’s showing is peoples houses. There is a actual tower in my town and it’s not even on the map. I’m pretty sure this app used to work like 8 years ago.

It used to be a great app with features others didn’t have.... It used to be a great app with features others didn’t have, but now it’s just another speedtester. In previous versions, users had had the ability to locate the nearest cell tower based on the signal strength and direction heading. For some reason, this function has been removed; along with many other unique features. Developers are now using “crowd sourced” data sources. (Whatever that means?!?!) Another words, they are now simply offering the same functionality as many other testers out there… And essentially brought this app down to where it says useless as everything else. Don’t wast your time. You can get the same testing from a web-page.

Good app, but..... If I leave the “contribute data in background” there is no hint of what the data usage will be on average to submit said data. Moreover when you leave the app, the iOS shows constantly a blue bar saying the app is using your location. Waze uses my location constantly and I don’t get nagged by the bar in the home screen. Last but not least, I see no arrow or location for any cell mast in the “find signal” tab. There is room for improvement. Pity because the app brings an important service.

Good but can be better. It’s a pretty good app and really accurate, but for some reason it also recognizes WiFi spots as cellular towers; also sometimes it doesn’t run the video test, but this can be because of Cuba terrible signal.

History problem. I tested viewed it. Then went into my History to compare when it was better and there was no history. Even the test that I just did was not there.

Signal problems. First and foremost I love the fact that have taken the time to give us a free application. A Signal booster is badly needed where I live. This application will help me install this myself. It may not be perfect but work great for my needs. So five stars from me. Thanks and have a great day too.

Not useful for finding cell towers. This app supposedly has a feature for finding the nearest cell tower for your carrier; however this has not worked in years. The feature should be fixed or removed from the app.

Wont work without location on. Why do i gotta give you my location data to just do a simple speed test? What if i dont care what others are getting around me or where the antenna is? It used to give you speed test results but now it wont, says turn on location data.. deleted the app.. done wit it..

could be great. this app could be great, we use it a lot to determine coverage in the mountains near Denver. the test is useful. the compare coverage is crowd sourced data and wishful thinking. the locate nearest tower usually doesn't work. how about using the test data to provide useful crowd sourced data? not a theoretical maximum. we can get wishful thinking from the carrier coverage maps.

Speed rating. This app does a good job on actual speeds. Much more accurate then Okla. I do not think it does very well on map reporting I’ve used this for over a year and the reports I’ve sent in this small town do not show up correctly.

Where’s the tower?. One two three bars LTE and you can’t find the tower? Seriously? On rare occasions yes, but really if I’m getting a signal why can’t you locate the closest or any tower at all? It can locate all the cellphones in use in a given area, I assume that’s what all those little brown and green dots all around me are, there certainly aren’t that many towers. When camped in the boonies with a weak signal, tower location really is essential if one is going to improve the odds of functionality. Please improve the ability to find the towers. That’s the only reason I downloaded this app. ☹️

Does not map cell towers. I’m not sure why they make me feel. The app is going to locate cell towers. I live in a real area trying to get my antenna. Adjusted to find the cell tower for AT&T. Can’t find it with this app. I wrote the company and they said that they do not support mapping of towers.

Lame. Great in theory. Major fail in practice. Trying to figure out which carrier has the best coverage in my area, but map does not allow selecting a carrier, only shows “all carriers” with no way to see which is which. I live on the coast and map shows a large number of cell towers... out in the ocean!! Looking out at the ocean, either they are using a Romulan cloaking device, or they don’t exist. So, app is useless for my purpose.

Worthless and Misleading. I don’t understand all the positive reviews for this app. I downloaded it to check for cell phone service in a location and it had no data for it. I then checked to see what it said about my house, and sure enough nothing so I guess the cell phone signal I’m using to write this review is imaginary. Anyway, there’s no advantage to this app vs just rolling the dice and taking your phone out when you get there.

Video test crashed. Tried to start video test on new iPhone 12 Pro Max on IOS 14.2 but that portion of the app pops up for a few milliseconds then closes. On T-Mobile 5G network.

Dropped signal direction feature and repaired it. This was the most useful feature, with the latest update it went away. They just released an updated version which restored the feature

Problems. Yep, the arrow is a “will of the wisp”; sometimes there but mostly not. Cannot select individual carriers. The only map I get is cell tower locations of at&t, my carrier. I would like to see others in case I might want to switch. I wish they would explain how the arrow is pointed. It it just pointing toward the nearest one for my carrier, or, is it where the signal is originating? Could they not provide the ID for that tower? So promising but still lacking.

Features and Navigate. This app gets right to the point and gives you all the information you need. It does about 5 things, and does them well.

Owner. Great tool. Every time I use it my ISP bump up the band with (magic) cell-cable what ever typ of connection you have. Helps locate the towers when in the backcountry to get closer to get a better connection

Does not work as advertised. The cell tower locator frequently points in a direction where there are no cell towers (such as a Wilderness area). It also won’t show your signal strength, even though older versions of it did (according to screenshots I’ve seen). And it won’t show you the ID and lat/lon of the tower that your phone is using at the moment, so that you can look it up yourself. Pretty much worthless.

“Where’s the meat”. The WI-FI program works great when there is no one else in the community using your service. The $45 is a reasonable price for the service but the downloads are terrible. You never know if the system is going to be overloaded and buffering when you go to use it! The companies solution is for you to upgrade the service! 😳

Reality vs marketing. You can rely on marketing for your information on the big carriers network coverage and speed or you can use this app and use reality.
