THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE APP

InTune began as a way for researchers to test pitch discrimination, the ability to differentiate pitches that are close together. But then researchers discovered that musicians improved the more often they played – 3x faster than those who didn’t. Download for free and see if InTune works for you!

Oh please.. The reason the description to the app is so vague is because the app is incredibly simplistic, and really just junk. Here’s what it is since the designers don’t tell you. You hear a tone, then you hear another tone. You decide whether the second tone is higher or lower. That is the entire program. I actually thought that it would be interactive, as in you hear a tone, then sing the same tone, or in my case play that tone on the violin. No. Nothing like that. Really just a sound generator.

Great app, but would like to see other features. Here are a few features I’d like to see added: - ability to start at any level - ability to repeat the tones - ability to turn off three strike mode

Ear Training the easy way. I love this app and so do my students! I start my classes with this app. My students really enjoy seeing if they can beat their last game. I also use this app with my private studio students. Addictive and fun.

Oboe timbre inconsistent. Overall I think this is a great app and I love using it. The addition of the new timbre choices at a rather reasonable $0.99 is a nice touch. However, the oboe option is broken, and the flat oboe sound is qualitatively different from the sharp oboe sound which makes practicing on that choice trivially easy. The English horn option somehow doesn’t have this issue; if I memorize exactly how the vibrato behaves in the flat vs sharp versions i could use that to hack the game but it’s something I can choose to ignore. I haven’t tried any of the other options but I recommend looking into them to make sure that the only thing differing is the pitch and not the tone quality/behavior; even if those differences are subtle people are bound to pick up on them.

Great app for music teaching!. I have had fun exposing this app to my students, and trying it for myself! I use it for private or group string lessons, and I have noticed that the students are really paying more attention to pitch as a result. The only thing that I would like to see is an option to replay the two tones. I would highly recommend to all music teachers who are trying to help their kids develop discriminating ears, and for all music students who are trying to improve on intonation!

Just got the game. Impressive. Initially I had some difficulty getting the pitch to be audible after a few rounds, but I reloaded the app, and it worked fine after that. Otherwise, I would have given it 5 stars.

Awesome app!. Hey! This is a great app I plan to be a singer when I grow up and this really helps me with knowing if I vote the right note or not it is also challenging and fun! I am so happy you created this app! Thank you!

Great app good app would be awesome with a few more options.. Great app! I agree with other reviewers that three things that would improve the app: 1) ability to replay tones. (Especially after you got it wrong) 2) ability to practice without going back to 100% difference after missing three and 3) ability to choose the starting level.

Great idea, some suggestions. I would love to have an option to change the note we are listening to (it’s always the same note), and an option to skip the first several levels

Fantastic. This app is one of the finest of its kind. I’ve had this for about 4 years now and I can safely say I feel a lot more secure in my ability to distinguish intonation differences; there is always room to constantly improve and that is what I love about this app!

Great Learning Tool. I am a high school choir director. I've shared this app with students to help develop and improve thier listening precision. They enjoy challenging themselves to improve and competing with others to see who can get the best score. It's a fun and fast way to see immediate results in your student's aural ability in rehearsal and performance.

Fantastic app!. It's applications are endless within any musical situation (pun intended). I have been using this app for a few weeks now and have already found myself fixing my choirs intonation to a meticulous degree. A truly great app, you can tell it was fabricated by a college professor, top notch!

Great to use in the classroom. As a middle school band director, teaching students to have an ear for intonation and tuning is important. My students love to use the app as a game - the contest is to see which class can score the highest. I love to see them have fun while learning to develop an ear for intonation. Their only concern, so also mine, is the tone generation can be somewhat uncomfortable when the whole class is listening. The team that has created this app should be commended for bringing such a great app to the public, and should make more!

A great app. This app could is helping me to be better at pitch. I liked the version previous better. In the previous version once you set a sound, it stayed on that sound the next time you opened the app. This version asks for your choice of sound between games whether you keep the app open or restart it. The old version had a chart that shows you where your score puts you on a spectrum of users. The new app tells you where in the spectrum your score is on the spectrum. Overall it runs a tad slower. Still it’s super valuable!

Awesome class tool. I teach MS and HS bands and use this as a class ear-training tool. I know of no better way to practically apply intonation skills. This would be even cooler if it did octave apart tuning. But I love it anyway

Good idea, could have more features. It gets boring having to restart from the beginning every time. Another reviewer suggested a mode where you aren't limited to 3 lives and you could just play infinitely. That would be much better, and it would definitely help you learn faster.

I try this regularly. whenever I get a chance i’ll open it up to train a little. The comparison chart might be a tiny bit off, my middle school students consistently get 5% or below.

Talk about Customer Service!!. I purchased the app one night late, and had no sound. Instantly emailed the designer. The next morning I received a reply and a working solution! Great app for tuning my ear, and awesome customer service!!

Genius via Simplicity. This app has aided my ear so much. What I appreciate about it is, compared to so many others with busy interfaces and hundreds of options, it’s limited it to one thing. But it’s a VERY crucial thing! The support is really quick and professional, as well.

Must Have App. I remember this app from back in the day. I redownloaded recently and I’m very happy to see the expanded range of notes to hear, and the variety of instruments. This app is a fun way to test and improve your ear, and I highly recommend for anyone who wants to fine tune their ears. My only complain is that some of the timpani sounds could be improved. The higher notes sound fine, but the low notes have so much impact and thud that it makes it really hard to hear the actual tone and pitch of the drum. Those low notes sound more like a bass drum than they do timpani. I think it would be beneficial if the timpani notes were played with a much softer mallet, as well as a lighter touch. That would create a more characteristic sound that mimics how a timpanist would actually play the drum. I hope I can see that improved as that’s the only thing holding back my rating from 4 stars to 5. Again though, very useful app and definitely worth being on any musicians phone.

Great app! Needs improvement.. I recently switched back to Trumpet from French Horn, and I have a very good ear when it comes to tone. I think this is a great app for improving your tone, but I solely feel the sound of the tone is a bit annoying and if possible an option for the instrument making the tone could be implemented. I don't know if I think this because I'm a trumpet player or if I'm selfish but this is my opinion. I hope you take my suggestions into consideration, thank you.

Makes ear training a fun game!. Thank you! I use this app with my percussion students to help their ear for timpani tuning. It’s fun for them and I’m noticing improvement!

Great app. I wish there was a feature where you can choose different instruments for each pitch. Like have one on piano and one on oboe, make it more real world application

Please add a way to replay the pitches. I use this for tuning practice and highly recommend it. The old version was better in my opinion, but I still like this version. I like that the pitches are not played as fast with this new version, but I liked the scoring with the old version. I would love it if there were a way to hear the pitches played again. Sometimes a second listen is needed to make sure your brain is thinking correctly. Neither the first or second version has offered this. I figured that would be among the list of improvements foe sure. Also maybe something telling you where your problem areas are… which octaves… and those could be used to drill down even further.

Fantastically precise and FUN!. This game, based on ability to hear pitch and intonation, is surprisingly fun to play. It would be a great measure of basic musical aptitude - as far as hearing pitch, at least. Game advertisements say that use of this game may improve people's sense of pitch. Hmmm... Regardless, it is a fun way to test your sense of pitch. I encourage you to check it out. 👍

great app. i've been using it for about two weeks and my sense of pitch has improved immensely. when i started i would lose around 2% now i can get less than 1% easily. my playing is definitely more refined as a result of using this app. i gave it 4/5 stars because (since it's not free...) i feel like it could use more features and i find it annoying that you have to start at 'level 1' each time.

It's super fun!. My private teacher told me to get this and I've had so much fun with it! It's a very fun educational game and it's great for on the go fun. I would recommend this to any person who plays an instrument

Works great, extra features would help. This game appears to improve pitch sensitivity and does so more quickly than expected. Having an option for changing base pitches, which one is assessed (i.e. swipe on first or second pitch), replaying the tones and factoring speed into scoring would make this even more powerful. Worth the price as it stands though. Thanks for a solid implementation of a great idea.

Wondering of its accurate. Is the test score accurate? It seems easy to get to 1% but according to the app intro page 1% is rare. I’m thinking the testing may not be accurate. Mostly depends on the device.

Great, simple app!. I hope this app never gets taken down from the store. It’s a great idea! I wish there were more apps with ear training on the App Store.

Very Good, But Please Vary Timbres. This is a very useful app, but I find that I have more difficulty when I am comparing pitches sounded by two different instruments. For example, I am learning to play the violin. When I attempt to tune to the piano, my accuracy goes down. Comparing the piano to the bowed violin string adds some complexity. Please add a variety of timbres so that users can compare pitches between instruments.

Excellent!. This app really does help develop ones ability to recognize a percentage of a difference between two notes. It is quite useful. It would be nice to see something get added to show the user where their individual score rates among the average person's percentage score, but besides that this app does exactly what it's designed to do. Thanks!

Disappointing update. I love this app but the most recent update has changed the “pure tone” sound. It’s missing the attack of the original sound and is not a pure sine wave anymore but more like a flute sound. I hope they fix this on the next update.

Musician’s Friend. Easy to use, well-Designed tool for musicians. It’s useful both for soloists and ensemble members. Helps to improve pitch differentiation/accuracy. Highly recommended!

Great app. Great app, works just fine. I would love for there to be a harder level with a third option of the second pitch being the same as the first pitch…this would really make things interesting as we get to smaller fractions of a half step!

Helpful for improving sense of pitch!. This app is plenty helpful as is, but u agree with some other reviewers' suggestions about replaying the two pitches and taking out the three strikes. I also would like the option of seeing a measurement in cents instead of percentage of a half step.

Great app for improving intonation. Overall a good app but could be much better if it allowed you to start from your personal skill level, rather than having to start from the very beginning. Better yet, have the 3-strike game as an option instead and allow for an option to continue practicing. Another great addition would be including real instruments sounds instead of the rather annoying electronic pitch.

Great little app!. Terrific app for when I want a quick distraction and a bit of practice. Beautiful interface, quick and fun, and I’m getting steadily better! The Cello add-on was well worth the buck-really enjoy hearing the instrument. Think I’ll buy oboe next.

This app is really great. Definitely helps improve your tone, and it’s also kind of addicting

Great for classroom use too!. As a middle school band director I use this app to help my students start listening more carefully to fine differences in pitch. It’s very easy to understand and I like the binary choice between higher and lower. Since it resets each time to easier levels, the kids who got lost when we made it to the really fine distinctions are able to rejoin us. InTune really helps them start paying closer attention to pitch.

Great App. Yeah it would definitely be useful to include a repeat feature and more importantly a level selection feature

Excellent for pitch training, good tool for singers!. Not just for strings and instrumentalists! This app is helping me greatly improve my sense of pitch which helps with my interval training and singing in tune! Thanks so much for creating it!

Great for developing tone sensitivity. I enjoy this app and find it helps develop pitch sensitivity. Recent updates have made it more enjoyable because there is less chance of missing due to impulsively hitting the wrong button, and you can also tell how many times you have missed (the previous version required you to track misses in your head). My one complaint is that you can't save your personal best for improvement purposes. All in all it is a great app, and fun to challenge friends with.

Great App for Intonation. Love this app! It's great for training your ear, and making it fun to boot! I do wish that if you reach higher levels, you didn't have to start at such a basic level each time. That's a very small thing, though. Really liking this app.

Want to hear the tones again!. I would give it 5 stars except for the glaringly obvious omission of being able to repay a pair of tones. Sometimes you miss the tones because someone talked or there was a loud noise. It can’t be hard; please add this in (didn’t it exist in previous iterations?). Please and thank you.

Great app for improving pitch discrimination. This is a great app to help musicians improve their pitch discrimination, which in turn will improve in donation. Please please please add a feature to enable people to save their score from one use to the next!

Serious/Fun. I've really enjoyed playing this game. It seems serious and fun at the same time. I'm getting better each time!

Neat, but.... The thing that makes me not like this as much is that the first pitch is the same every time. So, you might be developing pitch discrimination, but only at one particular frequency. Add random starting pitches, or better yet the ability to pick different notes, and this would be much more useful. For now it's a fun game.

Good App But Could Use Some Tweaking. Enjoyed the app and the challenges it offers. A good way to brush up on your musical listening skills which can improve musicianship. However, a chart or some type of "key" needs to be added to app that will better explain how to interpret the results & also save these results so the user can track their progress & see how well or if they are showing improvement.

More options. I have discovered that some of my prior issues with this app have already been resolved, they are simply hard to find. A more noticeable options menu should be created and the option to play the notes at the same time should also be added.

Great app. Great app just needs a replay button etc to make sure you have heard the two pitches correctly.

Great. Addictive app. Definitely helping me with identifying notes that are semi tones apart. Love it.

Okay, but..... The concept and the interface are quite good but the option to make adjustments of the timbre of the sound would be a huge improvement. Another thing would be for the user to set the range of the notes, maybe within a certain octave rather than having the majority of notes very high. Looking forward to improvements.

Simple and effective (and pretty too).. If there's been a fault with previous versions of this app, it's been the visual design. The new make-over is great, though. Sleek and smart. In regards to the functionality of the app, I've been using it for a year now and it's completely transformed my listening skills. I hope Wittenberg develop more apps in future.

1.53% and falling!. A simple little app but for competitive music nerds out there it's a lot of fun! I'm sure it's good for you too...

Wholesome. Yes it's brill. If you don't download it you're probably tone deaf. Hey, don't concern yourself, you could always audition for the X Factor.

Simple, effective. Great for pitch perception. Just in time for music school~

Neat!. Could use more than just a sine-wave and a single starting tone, but it's free, simple and stable, and helps improve your pitch discrimination, so what's not to like?

Awesome. Love it

Why ruin a good thing?. InTune was a great app before the recent remake. Now the sound quality is poor and muffled. The flute sound is really horrible, not pure and clear like it should be. Very disappointing!

Played it once. Hopefully it improves my ear, level 5 is difficult!

pretty average. No instruction on what the « game » is. Nowhere does it tells you, you have 3 chances only. No option to play the sound again. No info on what tones are or what semitones are. I still don’t know !

Helpful!. My only critique is that the pitch is always lower for like 10 rounds then it gets higher

Great app. Quite amusing. While I'm pretty confident in my own pitch perception I still find it fun. I bet it's very useful for those who may need it to improve their ears. Even for me, with absolute pitch and good ears, getting past level 4 is still a challenge :)

just what I wanted. I'm in a wind ensemble and I was looking to improve my intonation. I thought to myself that it would be cool if there was an app that tested intonation and then I discovered this. exactly what I was looking for :)

This App is Huge. Version 3.01 was 1.1 MB. Version 4 is 122 MB. It’s a waste of space. Make it small again. Whoever wants realistic instrument sounds should be able to download them or something.

Great to learn intonation. As a musician we're always told to play on tune but how does one actually learn to recognize those subtle differences in pitch to know if we are flat or sharp? It would be nice if there is an app to help teach this. This app is it! Highly recommended. Great to "play" a few minutes a day. I expect my scores to improve over time. Some future recommendations if possible - allow the ability to repeat incorrect answers so people can learn from mistakes. Other sounds would be nicer if possible (brass, piano etc.) Well done

Awesome app!. Loving this app. Downloaded it on a lark and have been testing it in different contexts, moods and lights to see if I can find a pattern in my ability to discern tones. I am not sure if I am actually strengthening some kind of brain-tune muscle, but I am improving over time. What does this do to our perception? Is the effect permanent? I am not a musician and do not sing. Just a curious daddy with two tots who are taking music lessons. They are playing with it too.

This app is great!!!. I am attending one of the best musical high schools in north america, and it is very important to be in tune all the time. This app is awesome for that!

Fun Tuning Game. This app is fun but is lacking a simple instrument in the instrument selection page. This app is missing saxophones yet has the English Horn and even Koto. Everything else is fine and fun.

Love it. Great for refining your ear. It is fun too.

Great!. Super useful and simple, too

I LOVE THIS TOOL.. This is AMAZING MUST TRY!!!!!

Thank you so much!. This app is the most helpful music tool for ear training there is!

My New Obsession. I cannot stop using this app. It is a wonderful invention and I have gotten some friends hooked on it as well. Music geeks, unite!

This is what iPads are for!. This is a great app for helping you to learn how to discriminate between minor differences tone. I am learning to play the guitar, and this app is helping me to develop the ear I need in order to tune and play better. Thanks to the developers, and if you get to St Louis, look me up!

Not for Iphone13. If you have an Iphone13, don't bother. It's too buggy to be useful

Fun and straightforward. I’d love to try a version with two notes simultaneously!

Neat app for music students. I think this app would be a fun challenge for students studying music. However, I think it would be better if there was more variation in pitches and it didn't continue to give you the same ones over and over again. That part makes it too easy to get the pitch variations correct.

Good job! Could be better by adding pitch changing option.. It would be perfect if the pitch can be changed to 442, 443, and even 444.

Useful and Fun. Violinists have a great need for intonation sensitivity, and this app trains the ear with a user friendly game. I enjoy watching my score improve! It's at 2.34% now, how low can it get?

Great training tool. Amazing learning tool, only wish the notes were in a better tone. If your looking to train your ears intonation this is for you. Worth every penny of the 99¢

Awesome app!. Fun way to work on your ear training! Compete with your colleagues; it will drive them crazy!

Needs more options. I like the concept of this game but I would very much like to be able to select other intervals instead of only straight unison. Ie. Octaves or fifths, etc. Also, it should record your high score and average.

Excellent training tool. I downloaded InTune yesterday and, although I enjoyed it in its current form, I immediately saw its enormous potential for more complicated intonation applications. I know of no other app that tries to tackle intonation training. This is a keeper, and I will be keeping a close watch on future updates and versions. Great work!

Awesome app!. My kids and I really enjoy this app! It is so interesting to watch our scores improve as we keep using it. I'm sure it will help us to stay in better tune in our various musical ensembles. Lots of fun!

Simple & Effective 👍🏼👍🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 great app!. Very simple 🎵👂🎶 training app. that really requires me to listen closely.

Awesome App. This app is so good because it tests how tone-deaf you are. The lower the percentage you can get the better. I wonder what happens if you get down to .01%?

Very interesting….. Clever, helpful app—Would love to see it developed further!

Awesome!. This app is a great training tool for musicians. Very simple to use but extremely worthwhile and beneficial. I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Great Self-Challenging Tool // Simple and Easy!. The description is pretty accurate. Over time my score dramatically improved. The interface is also designed in a very simple user friendly way. I would recommend very both musicians and non musicians. Actually, this app helps train the ear so it benefits everyone to be able to distinguish different sounds more accurately. Overall, it's simple great. Thank You!

Great app. It was very helpful very very helpful

Great app. I love how this app is challenging me to hear pitch in more fine grained ways.

Amazing. My band director recommended this to the whole band so we can stay in tune (obviously). I am actually a percussionist, but it still helps with listening to the rest of the band and seeing if they are playing wrong notes. tl;dr my band director recommends it, and I do too.

OK. This game was super fun at first and really tested my hearing. However when I opted to change the instrument to the violin, I was super disappointed. The audio for the violin includes vibrato, which distorts the pitch and made it a lot harder to continue with the game

Jsnsb. A great app with lots of potential. It would help if you could replay a round if youre stuck. Also id love a game history so you can actually see your improvement. Finally it seems the algorithm isnt that great. Sometimes i will use the same answer in a row many times which is weird

Love. I love the concept of this app, but a few improvements could be made with the scoring. I wish the app remembered your previous scores so you can track your improvement. I'd also like to see a leaderboard or some sort of rating chart so I know how "good" my score is.

A must-have for the professional musician!. If you can't be "InTune" with this, then you can't be in tune with anyone else! :)

Good but.... You should be able to replay the sound.

I'm excited to have found this. I am looking forward to better intonation as a result of using this app. Two improvements I would suggest: 1. Optional sounds with different "colors", instead of just the pure tone. 2. Something to compare your score against, e.g. Score of average person in the population, Score of average music major, Score of average symphony musician, Scores of friends with whom you share information, etc.

perfect!. my choir teacher showed us this so i got it on my phone and it is amazing! super easy and simple to use and i think it will help be be a better singer.

Very Useful Listening Tool. This is a sweet simple little tool for getting better at hearing tiny differences between 2 pitches. It's very much worth the 0.99 and also would be great for aspiring piano technicians / luthiers. Tuning unisons is the basis for piano tuning, and I could see these kind of apps popping up for hearing more sounds, different waveforms and instrument sounds, not to mention, the varying beat speeds of different intervals.

Great App but tone is terrible. My students can only stand using this for 20 seconds. The tone they use sounds like an emergency alert on the TV. Can you offer tone choices?

Cool. I don't know if it works but it's a simple game and I'm getting better at hearing it!

Useful. This app is worth the price if you want to get a better ear! You won't get better without practicing. It's fun, even if you don't have musical aspirations!

Timpani sounds just terrible... You guys seriously decided to use those sound files and selling them? You can do better than that

Amazing App!. It is a blow mind app! Awesome! Highly recommended

GREAT!!. This is great for learning how to tune without a tuner or if you want to get better at tuning

Need Pitch Info in Hz. Great app, but would be helpful if sensitivity were also given in Hz, which is what tuners use.

Nice. I like this app

Cool, what's it for?. I'm a musician, after a few tries, I got 0.92% of half a step. It's a good time killer, but I'm sure there is a greater goal that can achieved with this. Anyone know what it is? Thanks!

Great Teaching Tool. This app is easy to use and seems to succeed at improving tone sensitivity.

So fun!. Love it!! Fun to play, and my scores are progressing in the right direction!

Fun, but not for kittens. This is an app for obsessives, in a good way. Fun, and my scores improved immediately. I would love there to be some sort of statistical comparisons available to see how well you do by age, sex, whether you are a musician or music student. My kittens, however, hate it.

Simple and effective. I really like this app. The interface is simple and easy to use. It is a great way to train the ear. I do wish that it saved your best score (and interval) and also your most recent score so that you could track how you are doing from day to day.

Best Ear Training App I've Ever Seen. This is really an awesome. I knew I had a pretty good ear before, but now I'm getting consistent .85% scores. I think it would be cool to have an improvement chart. I can just write it down until then.

Great app!. I am planning to use this app with my high school choir students to improve their awareness of intonation problems. I love that the answer given uses percentage of a half step to indicate how small the interval is. Young singers go through life thinking that a half step is the smallest interval possible in music. This app has them working with 1/4 steps, 1/8 steps, or smaller. Would love to be able to repeat an aural example, both before answering and also after an answer in order to reinforce the listening skills. Thanks for a great app!

A Musician's Best Friend. I have trouble discerning whether notes are sharp or flat and this app has helped improved it each time I use it. A neat design that's easy to use and only takes seconds to become better at. Thank you for helping me become a better musician!

Intonationtastic!. GREAT app that really calls attention to awareness of just how tight an interval can be. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering this app this week and plan to utilize it for further ear training. I agree with the previous review that it might be nice to be able to repeat a sample at least once. Thanks!

Low frequency rumble 24/7. This app has a low frequency rumble that always plays when it's open. What the heck?

Awesome game. This app is very fun and very educational. I would recommend this for music majors!

Who knew?. I play InTune my myself to improve my ear, and I play with my family as a listening game--my daughter doesn't even realize she's practicing for choir! We're believers in the importance in early musical exposure/education as a lifelong foundation, and it's great to sneak more disciplined practice in when she's not even expecting it.
