App crashes a lot, very poor technical support. Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a fantastic idea, and has many wonderful attributes. It is well worth the price. However, be aware of a large learning curve, and next to no technical support. Currently my app will not load and I am on the verge of losing a lot of work, and they are proving no help. There’s a lot of tutorial videos, but it’s very difficult to search for what you are looking for. Also, email support is all but non-existent. There are many bugs and UI issues that, when solved, will make this a wonderful tool. For instance, every time you save a new progression and then tap play, the program crashes. If you have saved your work, you will not lose anything, but a pain in the neck to deal with. The play button is tiny, and any transpositions you want saved with a progression do not save. If you are looking for a much simpler and consistent play along app iReal Pro is still your answer. MTHP might get to be your best choice, but still has work to do.

harmonic Wizardry!. I feel like a harmonic wizard with this app! The ability to visualize complex chord progressions and harmonic movements is nothing short of magical. A definite must-have for serious musicians.

Unbelievably Amazingly Fantastic. Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is by far the best app for serious musicians and composers wanting to understand existing chord progressions, or to create your own compelling changes. It’s an amazing app for play along, with thousands of existing tunes with incredibly great-sounding backing tracks. It’s everything you ever wanted to know about tonal harmony (but we’re afraid to ask). It’s iReal Book on steroids, and a whole lot more. It’s worth every penny.

Best Practice Tool Ever!. For me this is my favorite practice tool. It can do so many things well. I have never regretted this purchase and have added all of the iap options.

Harmony Made Clear. MTHP 6 boils down abstract harmonic relationships into an immediate, hands-on audio/visual experience that makes exploring harmonies within any musical genre easy and fun. The app adjusts to suit a novice or Beethoven himself by contracting or expanding the harmony map, rewarding new understanding with new harmonic relationships. MTHP 6 adds new features to assist in composition and recording, even midi. This is one of my best iOS purchases ever. If you have ever struggled with theory or simply want a great tool for applying the knowledge, buy this.

So much potential but... There is so much depth in this app and the quality of the player audio is better than the other app I use regularly. But the user interface is dreadful. Things you need to press all the time are tiny and hard to find. Large chunks of the screen are wasted on things that I don’t want to see and I often can’t figure out how to get popovers and menus to go away. Things you need to access frequently are squirreled in deep menus and I feel like I need new glasses just to use this app. The UI should just be redone completely with a focus on common use cases. Ironically I saw an ad for this app and clicked through only to realize that I had purchased it years ago and gave up on it then. I had forgotten about it and decided to give it another chance. My main feeling when I’m using it is just confusion. I’m sorry to be negative about something that is a labor of love for someone - it’s just very idiosyncratic and arcane to me.

What I hoped. Exactly what I needed to compliment Suggester for building harmonies! However, one glaring issue….. I like seeing the visual keyboard. A lot. When I select a chord from the map, it appears as expected in the voicing keyboard in the top panel. However, when I am playing a song, the chords do not appear in the voicing keyboard as the song plays. Why not? This a big miss. I am on version 9.5 now, and it still doesn’t work. The keyboard just sits there on whatever chord you hit last on the map. The notes do not change as the song is playing.

Amazing app for music enthusiasts. Mapping Tonal harmony is an absolute gem for musicians that want to delve deeper into music theory. With the new features and intuitive interface in the new version, it’s a dream come true! I really recommend this app to any musician willing to learn music.

Great teaching app!. I have been using this app for over a year and it has helped me immensely. By listening to the MDecks video lessons and using the app I have become a more adept musician and have become more proficient at jazz improvisation while, at the same time, have been learning higher level music theory concepts. Love it.

Great idea, egregious execution. I don’t write many reviews, but couldn’t hold back here. An expensive and highly aspiring application which should never have been released to the public without sufficient beta testing. Not only is the UI laborious and non intuitive, but the program is incredibly buggy seemingly without any effort from the developer to address obvious concerns. One basic example would be that the program does not automatically open selected items. Rather, the user is forced to manually close a a screen view before he/she can work with a selected item, ie. song file in a portion of the program/different screen view. Screen icons are tiny and unintuitive as well. It really is too bad because the program would be a fantastic teaching tool if not for the horrendous UI, essentially rendering the app useless.

Nice visualizations. The app provides several different tools for visualizing how harmonies work together. The presentation is artfully done in a way that’s inviting. There are many options and features such as choices of inversions, automatic voice leading, and the display of cadences. The app would be helpful to songwriters and students.

Perfect for improv. As an improvising musician, Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro has enriched my musical vocabulary significantly. It's like having a treasure trove of harmonic possibilities at my fingertips. The target notes are my go-to feature for sparking creative ideas!

Complete map option not working. Seems a bug Complete map option view not working

Awesome!. My fav music app. I have used it to play along with, and as an arranging aid for doing big band charts. Love it!

Finally ready for prime time. I’ve had this app for quite a while but hadn’t used it ... earlier versions seemed to me to be brilliant and intriguing but also frustrating. The core functionality was obscured by bad UX/UI. I stuck with iRealPro which is more modest in its aspirations and simpler to use. I don’t want to interrupt my practice time to monkey with an app. The harmony map is a cool idea but I don’t find much use for it. Finally, MTH has matured to the point it’s really usable, especially if you buy the 1000 jazz tunes in xml format and import them. The developers are responsive to comments. I’m sure further refinements are continuing. I’d recommend this for any serious student of music, either classical or jazz-based, or any player who wants to deepen their understanding of tonal harmony. Exporting backing tracks as MIDI creates amazing options. You can make a backing track in MTH and export it to your DAW to orchestrate it, or export it to MuseScore and see/edit it as a score, to use the backing track as a basis for a band arrangement! A forum to share user-created backing tracks would be a killer addition. Maybe the developer could be persuaded to create a companion app: mapping atonal harmony pro!

Great samples, awful user interface. The developer offers great samples, appealing voicing/chords and very nice percussion sounds but the goodness ends there because the whole program is just not ready to accomplish its full potential. The user interface, its functionality and ease of use are way, and I mean way below par. It’s a great app if you just want to play along but if you push it to write your own stuff in a simple concise manner, this app will be exceedingly frustrating. Expensive too if you buy the Real Book. In short, whoever designed the user interface was really out of touch and in his own world, unreachable. Sounds great but practically worthless for a creator that’s wants to be precise and truthful to his own creativity. App receives a resounding F grade.

Harmonic Analysis made easy!. Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro has simplified harmonic analysis for me. Its powerful algorithms and user-friendly design allow me to explore tonal relationships with ease. This app has taken my musicianship to the next level!

Incredibly Poor Customer Service. I initially downloaded the free “play-along” ap and purchased the 1300 song ad-on. I figured I would probably upgrade to MTH and since their info said I could use my add-on purchase for MTH, I figured it was safe to get the add-on. After I upgraded to MTH I found that the add-on would not load (contrary to their info). I contacted them and their initial answer (from Mario) was to remove and re-load MTH. That did not work. I was then told that my issue would be sent to their developer team. That was several weeks ago. I have made a number of attempts to get an update. There is nothing but crickets. I am being ignored. Are the developers so inept that they can’t solve the problem or do they just not care. I am very disappointed. I strongly recommend thinking twice before paying money for any of there products. If an issue can’t be solved be reloading the app they seem to lose interest in you. So sorry I gave them my money.

No editor how to videos, pdf, just ignored.,. The app does have value especially to keep one focused on the musical relationships of tonal and functional harmony principles. It also has porential to be a great app. My biggest dissapointment is the editor features are completely ignored and neglected. NO EDITOR INSTRUCTION pdf or video. I needed to erase left over measures and tried to guess what the symbols do, some are intuitive but others are not. I could never find editor functions instructions or a video. For the price, and all the videos and books, in app purchases mdecks pretends to sell, it ought to include a decent editor and support. Mdecks spends much effort on making promo videos. If the consumer is willing to spend and pay tgeir asking price, mdecks should lusten and give the buyer an editor and support.

Good app. Helped me fill in a few holes in my theory knowledge. Also a good reference for things like, “How do I functionally write a subV again?” 4 stars because I’m on iPhone 6s and I don’t think it’s optimized for this device. This is a big app that suggests closing unused apps. A few screens hang or otherwise are a bit hitchy. Support was helpful when I needed it. I recommend it.

A Music Theory professor's delight. As a music professor, I can't recommend Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro enough! This app is an invaluable teaching tool, offering my students an engaging way to grasp complex concepts. It's like having a theory expert in your pocket, and awesome to teach with.

Bug: Reharmonize feature closes app. One of the biggest reasons I bought the app, the reharmonize generator, crashes the app on use. Everything else works and looks good. Still a little disappointed but willing to update review once fixed.

Highly Recommended. The latest versions of this app have taken it to a whole new level for both education and songwriting. If you have no formal training in music theory like me, its a bit overwhelming at first, but if you spend time with the newest tutorials and the manual, things start to gel in time. You can learn as you go. This is a deep app with lots of functionality and levels, so expect to dedicate some time to learning how to get the most out of it.

Not transposing on May 2022. Today May 3rd 2022 the app is not transposing. It does change the chords but when you play it, it keeps playing in the original key instead of the new key. Also, I set 4 repeats for one song and it’s affecting all of the other songs. I was hoping to use this app in a gig next week but it’s unreliable. Beware!!

So underrated. Amazing app to learn harmony

Needs a control to turn down the drums. I need to be able to turn down the drums overall volume. I’d really appreciate it being in a new version.

No longer a beginner. I always loved jazz but when I listened to jazz musicians talk about about jazz I felt I was listening to another language. So I began to study it, this app was recommended by a music teacher friend. It not only has helped me play and now understand that language I feel the music that I have always listened to in a much more intimate and understanding way.

Needs Improvement. This app needs to be simplified, why is there not a metronome for the play along. Menu diving, gets old real quick.

Complex interface, Steep learning curve. This app looks like it may, at some point, be a great learning and composing tool. But it suffers from a complex, confusing interface that makes it extremely difficult to understand and use without investing a ton of time experimenting, watching videos, making mistakes, etc. I think the average person, who wants to be at least somewhat productive immediately, is not going to have the patience to become proficient in using this app without getting frustrated and mad first. But I do recognize that under the covers there are some powerful features that I would love to be able to use more easily. And if the developers brought in a study group of average musicians who sit down with the app, picked a key and started to experiment while the developers are observing their frustrations, I’m sure improvements in the interface could be made to make it more intuitive. Personally I don’t have the hours to waste trying to learn this app. So for me, the $9.99 I paid for this app was not spent very wisely.

A master course in theory. This app is a power house for anyone who has a need for becoming more skilled in music theory and harmonic analysis. And it also works as a backing track too! This is my go to app for anything music.

Incredible composition and harmony tool. This is the best app to study Tonal Harmony today and it gets better on every update. I highly recommend this app for anyone looking to compose, analyze or teach harmony. The upper structures and target notes are really useful if you want to learn how to improvise and play over chord changes. I would certainly recommend watching the videos to get a better idea of all the things you can do with this app. This app gets better and better. Saving performance settings is a great new feature.

Voicings Keyboard still not working. It’s been over a year and I can’t believe you still haven’t fixed this. When the keyboard is loaded on the panel it doesn’t show anything.

Paid $15 so I could buy the rest of what’s advertised. Don’t waist your money.

The new user experience is awesome!. From a user experience standpoint, this latest version of Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is top-notch. Navigating through its features is now smooth and easy. Kudos to the developers!

Great App! Needs Looping Improvement. The core app, it’s design, functions, operations, and exceptionally good add-ons I have only praise for, BUT, like Achilles, it has one crippling flaw. Looping some chosen measures of a tune for focused practice is a complicated, many-touch, tedious drill-down though hidden menus every time you want to do it, which for me is many times a day, every day. Fixing this one thing cleanly (ala iRealPro, for example) would make MTHP my all-the-time go-to app, which it can never be without this fix.

Fabulous composition tool. I wish I would have had this app years ago when I first started studying composition. Starting with a key and simple diatonic chords, you can explore chord changes through related keys, borrowing chords from other keys, easily auditioning different ideas. You can also put together a chart with your chord changes, then have the app play back your progression with accompaniment (piano/bass/drums) in multiple different styles, with different variations every time. It’s like having a skilled backup band to instantly play through your changes. Once you have something you like, you can easily export to a DAW like Cubasis. The developer is very responsive. I’ve emailed him several questions about various features and he’s been back to me with informative answers promptly. I was a bit put off when first installing the app, and it asked me to create a user ID for an online database. I realized that all I needed to do was create a nickname and password - that was it. When I’m creating progressions, I simply mark them as ‘private’ and they are not shared with the community. But if you wanted to share them with other band members or students, you could easily do so. I’m still exploring and learning, moving through the constellation of related chords and tools. The online database of chord changes is like a dictionary of familiar progression fragments, a very useful and inspirational resource. Highly recommended.

Nice, a bit lacking. I prefer the sound of the play along on this app way more than the iReal pro which can get pretty corny at times. However, I can’t figure out why on certain songs the bass can’t play a simple walking bass line after the first/second chorus of a song which is what you’d normally expect while playing with a backing track. It would be great if it could also play in the background and not only while you’re on the app like the iReal does. The last thing I wish the play along could do is be able to change the style of the song. Many jazz standards can be played in a variety of contexts so it would be great to have that option readily available like the iReal does. If they could fix these things I’d happily change my rating and use this as my main play along for shedding. Thanks.

A musician's best friend!. This app is becoming my musical companion. Whether I'm composing, practicing, or analyzing music, Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is guiding me on every step. I couldn't imagine my musical journey without it!

Great app, zero customer service. I reached out to them prior to purchasing their app to get some information, and was never contacted. A year went by and an app of theirs went on sale the play along version of this particular app I bought it and paid for all the standards. Not long ago, the pro version went on sale, which I then purchased. But apparently the IEP does not transfer, so I have to manually send each XML file to the new app, should be an easy fix, reached out to the company, crickets….

pretty complete music education. Having played and studied music for decades now both independently and at school, I think this app is an exceptional music education on its own. Pairing the sound (i.e. emotion) directly with the core of theory (i.e. explanation) in example after example is extremely effective. Just bought it last night and have spent an hour with it—stunned.

2nd time around. I purchased this app a few years ago and was disappointed with what seemed to have a lot of potential. The developers did actively reach out after a few updates, so I decided to give them some time to grow. It would appear by the recent reviews that this software has begun to fulfill its potential, so I figured I would try them out again. Unfortunately, I was greeted by the need for me to repurchase the product for my MacBook, which is something I am simply not going to do. That is absolutely ridiculous and I’m sad to say that I won’t be bothering with this software. I’ll give you one more star than before because apparently you have made the application much more appealing. Those efforts should be recognized regardless of my issues with your marketing.

Disappointed. This app looks like a great tool for jazz musicians but after trying to figure out how to download the 1000+ jazz standards for my iPhone as a better replacement for iReal pro I couldn’t figure out how to import the songs to my iPhone and why I have to pay on PayPal with my card and not through apple. It would be nice if there was a way to download the songs from the app like the iReal pro forums. I’m trying to get a refund but I’m not tech savvy enough to figure out how to do that so hopefully someone has a game hanging answer or the dev team finds a way to help me. Otherwise I’ve just wasted money and I hope anyone who sees this will not waste their money as well. Thanks. Update: the developers got back to me a week later and sent me a link to a step by step guide to downloading the jazz sheets. I guess most jazz players are tech savvy these days but it’s a few too many steps for me. I’ll wait until they come out with an easier way. Good luck to anyone who attempts to make this app work for them. Thanks

How is this app even real??. If you’re serious about learning music, I don’t know how you can’t buy this app. Ten bucks? And another 10 for over 1300 jazz standards? I’m appalled. This is not a joke. This is the real deal. I don’t even write reviews, but I had to for the this one. If you care at all about music theory, get this app right friggin now.

Midi out is back! Just wonderful. This is the most in depth theory app out there, and the UI keeps getting better. Now with midi out it again becomes a learning powerhouse, I use it to help learn chords on a Linnstrument, showing the chord on leds and sending midi to sound source of my choice to hear chords. It’s brilliant! Also works with NI Lightguide keyboards as well as qunexus. Worth every penny and then some. Hoping the rootless chords information gets added as next iap. This is the kind of app that can make an old iPad or phone useful for decades. Thanks for great stuff

5 stars and beyond. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a game-changer in the world of music theory apps. It's like having a personal tutor, patiently guiding me through the intricacies of tonal harmony.

Great!.. Hi, thank you for this app. Excellent app for composers and improvisers.

Target notes does not work. Update to first response: okay target notes work. But no instructions on how to make them work. Why not a simple explanation on your web site like this: ==== To enable target notes or upper structures: 1. Go to the TOOLS menu (click on the hammer icon on right panel) 2. Select target notes drop down 3. Turn on target notes by selecting, single, combined or lines. Note that you must click to the right of the “off” button to select on of these options. Otherwise, the options are no clearly visible. 4. Choose one of the target note types below. Options are guide tones, tensions, chord tones. Follow a similar procedure for upper structures in the TOOLS MENU. An explanation like the above would save so much time. I spent time doing this so all you have to do is paste on the app and web site. This app does a lot of nice things but doing a lot of nice things means it has a complicated UI. Therefore, any add-ones need instructions. I’m upgrading to 4 stars. Would be 5 if you just provided instructions like I did. ====== First response: Added target notes under staff presets. Notes do not appear for any of the songs listed on your site. Examples: Afro Blue, Afternoon in Paris. I did rebuild the catalog.

Very Poor User Design. The design of the app is so complicated and frustrating. I spent $20 on an app which is very expensive, and was so excited to use it. I opened a song and could not close it at all. I had to delete the app to get back to the main menu. I am very disappointed for this reason. The other features are great but something has to change because it is nearly impossible for me to figure out how to exit the song or staff. I just wanted to get back to the map.

A Music Theory Playground!. Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro is a playground for music theory enthusiasts! I spend hours exploring its features, experimenting with different chord progressions, and discovering new harmonic territories. Get it, you’ll learn a lot, no matter where you are in your music journey.

Features for iPad are not the same as listed. The features in the list are for the desktop version, not the iPad version. You can’t browse “hundreds” of standards, there is maybe a dozen and you cannot import the fake book xml files that contain others, as you can on the desktop version. So, it has interesting features but unless you want to enter a bunch of songs by hand, you are stuck with the songs and progressions that are already in the app. Kinda a drag because the accompaniment play-along ability of the app is great, way way better than iRealB, better sounds and better comping. Hopefully in the future you can import files on the iPad version and load up the xml fake book files provided by the publisher. update as of 06/22 sooooo many bugs and inconsistencies make this program more frustrating than useful, in v8 slash chords do not work, there is no “pedal point” option when you click on the chord per the docs. The documentation does not reflect different platforms, it talks about right clicking…on an IPad??? This program has reached Band-in-a-Box level interface crime, it’s probably only useable by the guy who wrote it, or someone that wants to devote a lot of time to figuring out how things work via trail and error. Better off getting the free player app instead for simple playback.

Brilliant!. The developers of this unique, innovative app are to be heartily congratulated! Mapping Tonal Harmony is a most intelligently designed and powerful app with a host of potential uses. These various possible applications are well demonstrated by the many excellent Youtube videos made to support the app. My own reason for purchasing Mapping Tonal Harmony was to use it as an aid to learning music composition. I have found it’s really helping me to develop a much clearer, more coherent understanding of harmony that successfully integrates (i) important overarching theoretical concepts with (ii) how various chord progressions actually sound. It’s invaluable to all those would-be composers who don’t happen to be pianists. The fact that the creator of MTH is clearly an experienced and highly capable composer himself means that the app has been designed by someone who really knows what is required. The capacity to explore progressions and then export them to Sibelius via a MIDI connection is invaluable to provide a basis for further compositional work. I believe that a forthcoming upgrade will also provide a ‘within MTH’ facility to produce notation from these chord explorations, something that will be of enormous value.

Amazing. Such an amazing app and keeps getting better. There is nothing like it.

Wow. A workhorse app, combining harmonic analysis, visualisation, play-along and a built-in Real Book.

Different take on harmonic analysis. I have a number of music composers, chord progression apps but this is so different in its approach. I love experimenting with this program and have gained a lot of insight into chromatic harmony.

Disappointed with support. Regretting buying it.. I have both the iOS version (on my iPad) and the MacOS version (on my MacBook Pro). I bought MTH Pro to learn more about harmony/chord function. Having watched a series of MTH videos ‘decoding’ the harmony in a popular song, I was unable to download the song from iTunes, as instructed in the videos. I followed the instructions, but it simply did not appear in iTunes. My main complaint is that, apart from an initial enquiry in the YouTube comments (which did not resolve the issue), I have received no further reply at all from mdecks, despite sending several emails. Not good enough, mdecks! In addition, overall, I have found the interface and basic functionality clunky and unwieldy, and frankly, I’m regretting spending $46.99 (AUD) for the iOS version, when mdecks don’t respond to a query regarding the very thing for which I bought MTH. Update, 12 December. More unanswered emails. Do not expect the courtesy of a reply from mdecks. Downgrading my previous rating of two stars to one star, based on total lack of response.

:). Amazing app, nothing else like it!

Great App. I love it but it’s a while to figure it out

Love it!. Easy to use and does more than I expected!!! Happy with purchase. :)

Not user friendly. It is not user friendly. Eg. to write down a song title, you have to touch an empty bar. Adjust the number of bars, only worked once, then stopped working. When I saved a song I create, It wasn’t in my preferred folder. You can only save it inside your phone. I have not been able to do an 8 measure song in a week. Menus are not intuitive. Sorry guys. In one sentence, the app is difficult to use.

Crashes. Crashes on numerous occasions in song mode particularly. Gmail of mDecks is not valide and there’s no way to get support from the developper(s) on the web site. Hope that this post will get some attention from them.

Looking forward to using this beauty with the improved Audio Engine. Was great before, but nice to see they went to work on the Audio glitches...

Overpriced and better options. This app is way to overpriced when there are much better options. iReal pro is much less expensive, and actually comes with the music. If you want any more than about 5 music backing tracks, it is another 30 dollars. Unreasonably expensive, and wish I got a refund while I could!

Misleading and Overpriced. The barebones app is $25, but it’s roughly $80 extra to actually get all the apps features. Complete rip-off.

PoorExecution. This ought to be the killer of clunky-sounding old iReal Pro, but its poor design choices and ham-handed execution make it almost unusable. I bought it to use on an iPhone, and on that platform at least, the UI elements are far too small and fiddly to use. Perhaps a fairer trial would involve a tablet or a laptop, but nowhere did I see a 'Not Suitable for iPhone' warning. MTHP crashed several times in the course of ordinary use, losing the work I was attempting. The existing library of tunes is partially pay-walled off, you cannot edit the ones that the platform does provide, and there is no reservoir of freely available ones to download. This kneecaps the app's usefulness. MTHP is a cathedral, when it ought to be a bazaar. It certainly does a better job than iReal Pro of being a rhythm section — far better. And its scope and ambition is also far greater than iReal Pro's. I believe, however, that it’s as an alternative to iRP that most users will approach MTHP, and they will be frustrated by it. MTHP's developers must first make their app far more usable along those lines, and make its other capabilities secondary to that. Getting rid of its wrong-headed approach to repertoire/catalogue would be essential. I gave MTHP two stars instead of one, only in recognition of what it's *trying* to do.

Editor too complicate. I’m not able to find Dø7 in the chords mapping. The strangest is that my review doesn’t matter for the global review, which remains at 5 starts.

It’s so close!. This is such a revolutionary concept for understanding harmony, substitutions, and more. It’s just that it really requires you to study the guide videos because there are some design choices that make using the app harder than it needs to be, with lots of icons that are not explained. This is an advanced tool to be sure, that well reward practice and extended use.

it’s way too complicated. It seems like you have created something incredible, but the UI is impossible to use. I have no idea how to use it, even after watching all of your YouTube tutorials. I even went to the manual on the site, but there is no information on how to use anything. I don’t know what any of the side buttons to on the UI, I’ve clicked every button, but I can’t seem to get rid of the song editor. The buttons don’t really do what I think they would do. I am overall, just very confused. It seems like a revolutionary idea though to have all chord progressions in one page, and it seems like you put in a lot of work into this. But I think not many people understand what this is… If the UI can be better explained, and if you can explain to beginners what this is, this would be much better. I know quite a bit of theory, but I still do not understand which is a shame. I really would like to understand it.

The only app of its kind. Do not waste your time on anything else.. I have a masters in composition , and BA in piano performance / music theory. I am able to distinguish gimmicks from valuable tools. It is clear the développer is a musician and theorist. This is not a gimmick. I am considered a Pessimist and rarely recommend anything that isn’t absolutely ground breaking. This is so many things. First off, the only comprehensive digital aid to help learn harmony showing how chords move in all genres. It is also a fantastic tool for backing tracks. It is a phenomenal tool for generating your own personal chord progressions in a quick way using built in algorithms to practice different concepts. It provides voicings , scales …. I have seen them all. Every app. This is the only one that made me reconsider developing my own a few years ago. It is updated very often and altho it can still use a few tweaks, it is just not comparable to any of the apps that claim to do the same.

Satisfied. To the reviewer above....... it may be a little pricey, but musicians who use this, it’s well-worth the cost. A lot of time has gone into producing such a fine program.

Interesting idea. Terrible UX. The UI is extremely buggy and unintuitive. Especially for writing your own chord progressions (which is what I wanted it for). I hope I can get a refund. Maybe it’s better on Mac OS

Needs an update. It is very far behind the Mac version. It needs an urgent update

Avoid this terrible, terrible app. Won’t save settings, have to tap tiny buttons numerous times and fiddle around aiming your finger to transpose, set loop points, press play, and do the most basic functions. Very slow and inefficient compared to iReal. If you are a jazz musician you will have to pay for the app a second time to get the standards library. Tonnes of totally useless features and awful tiny graphic design. Even loading a tune is a hassle with the several tiny button pushes it takes just to do that. Extremely disappointed.

Not bad, not great.. Not as easy to use as iReal pro. Repeat signs are non functional in ios as far as I can tell. Contacted support several times, no solutions or tutorial were offered. The map is fun to use and the playback styles are cool.

Not well supported on iPad. I bought this app entirely on the idea that I could import jazz workbooks into it. App cost and workbook bundle later (50$) of stuff, turns out I cannot do any of that... what a ripoff...

Update 8.0 Is excellent. Much more stable. A lot less bugs. A lot more user-friendly. Plus new features including new instruments and new options for voicings.

Best Music App. I was hesitant to buy it but I am so glad I did. Wow! Way better than expected! I own the computer version of MTH v.7 and it’s ok but this app is freakin sweet!

Seriously great app but. Not updated for iPad pro, makes it unusable for me.

IOS Version is very Buggy. I really like this app but...... the iPad version crashes when using the editor. Very disappointing ... Hopefully the developers will figure it out soon.

Extremely buggy. The thing crashes on startup among dozens of other places. Can’t loop. Limited styles. Great potential, but stay away until they fix this stuff.

Bug in the last update. To whom it may concern when I updated the last version, Only the 1 3 5 Is available on the map in secondary dominant mode everything else disappeared.

Simply amazing. Everything about this app is a success. Beautiful interface, incredible utility, customizations and options a'plenty. This is some brilliant execution. I am astounded that the price is so low. This is easily one of the best app purchases I have ever made.

Out of date. Fun but it’s taken ages for them to do the update

Thanks for fixing the bugs. Working good so far. Excited to use it more.

Can’t update the Catalog after Pro 8 Update. The program will not open after updating. It tries to update the catalog, however it crashes in the process. Hopefully the developers are aware of the problem and will send out a fix in another update soon. Since I’m unable to contact support about the issue, I have to write a review to hopefully bring the issue to the developer’s attention.

Good but needs some UI improvement. This is a great concept and it works pretty well. I appreciate the effort that has gone into the application because I know of nothing else that attempts to do what this app does. I would like to see some improvement in the layout of the app. The opening screen isn’t designed very well and the help and manual listed are links to YouTube videos. There are lots of videos so that is helpful but you have to spend a good amount of time with all the videos to extract what you need to know to use the app. There are some crashes happening while using the editor. I tried to delete some markings from a score and the app crashed every time. Overall the controls and menus are a little odd to work with but with practice I have been able to figure them out. I use iReal Pro for practice tracks and find it easier to create tracks in it, but MTH is more ambitious in what it is trying to accomplish. There is a lot of depth in the presentation of tonal harmony and it’s a lot to take in for someone like me who has played music for years but didn’t get too far into theory. I like the app and will keep working with it and learning more about it and I hope the developer is able to make some updates to the UI to bring it more in line with modern apps.

Mac OS 10.15. Don’t buy it. Get the IOS version for your Ipad. It doesn’t work and I can’t get a reply from decks.

Crashes on my iPhone 6. Any time I hit the new button it crashes.... have had the app a long time but just reinstalled it after watching a YouTube video. I thought it might be useful to Bluetooth over to my pa to play along with. But every time I hit new to try and put together a progression to play along with it crashes. Should have left it on the cloud.......

Much more freedom than any playback app, however..... This app gives you a ton more freedom than iReal Pro and has better playback and a more visually appealing UI, definitely could be more intuitive and user-friendly though. For the target notes add-on I purchased, the Lines option sometimes stays on a single note through multiple chords which isn’t ideal for practicing, it’d be awesome if we could have an option to see all of the chord tones and be able to select which one we wanted for each chord/bar to create our own lines, maybe even have the app suggest ones but let us have the final say. Having to search the entire map to find a chord you already know you want is frustrating at times, I wish there was an easy way to just enter chords, like iRealPro has. Also, when a chord isn’t on the map, I tried inserting a modulation to be able to play that chord and there was some error message that said I couldn’t enter a modulation there. The next day, I try to enter a modulation again, and it only allows me to set the beginning of a loop. Not sure how to fix this, and I don’t really need a modulation anyway, just a way to enter chords that aren’t on the map. I tried entering an Gm7/C when my chart was in the key of Fmaj and there just wasn’t an option so I had to settle for Gm7. Maybe some of the things I mentioned are already working features of the app, I just can’t seem to figure out a way to use them. Awesome app though, and I look forward to being able to use it consistently, it’s just a little harder to use than I’d like.

Keep up the outstanding updates!. It just keeps getting better. I’m waiting for the Mac version to drop, I have a list of todos. Let me also state, I’ve had great communication and support from the MDeck Team!

Outstanding!!!!. As a community music school director, what great fortune to discover this amazing application. Bravo!!!

Wow.... Visual learning of musical concepts, with full audio. This is the only app of its kind... Absolutely brilliant and insightful. Well worth the money!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND. If you are serious about taking your music skills to the next level, look no further than this app. I am a music student studying at a conservatory, and this app has taught me more than my own school has. This app + the Mdecks music tutorials on YouTube will bring you from basic to no understanding of harmony, to complete harmonic genius and freedom. And I’m not just saying that! If you trust the process and put in the time, you will be thankful for every minute you spend watching Mdecks’ videos and using MTH as a tool. Not to mention that it is also a great play along app, and blows iReal pro out of the water in terms of sounds and creativity. Bottom line: if you can shell out a $20 a week for lessons gear, or whatever else you might be using it on, you can shell out $20 for MTH and before you know it you’ll be teaching your own teacher.

Excellent learning tool. So fun to play with and learn about relationships between chords, tonics, chord progressions and the like. YouTube videos are super helpful as well (check ‘em out!) A great value to help you learn about music theory and to have accompaniment. Love this app (tool)!

Convoluted. Man. This is pointless.

Confusing. Not user friendly in the least bit Certainly not intuitive The tutorial was hysterical unless you have a music degree from Berkeley don’t watch it you’ll be dead in a week Pass

Poor UI. UI on iPhone is unusable. For example, when searching for songs, the keyboard covers the results so you can’t actually select anything (you can’t hide the keyboard either). In addition, the map keeps popping up even if you hide it.

Disappointed!!!. I’ve bought Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro and so far I’m frustrated to get started. It’s hard to use. The Youtube tutorial videos are outdated. They look different than the latest version. There’s no technical support. I wrote them an email asking for help but they are not responsive and I still have not heard from them. Just so frustrated!

Amazing!. This app is a victory for why iPads are so awesome. It allows you to learn theory through sound and visuals that make sense. Hats off to this developer and thanks for helping all musicians stride ahead in understanding and creativity.

So cool. I love this app. Let's you see the whole harmonic picture in any key.

Not worth the money. This app is more designed for keyboards rather than guitar and mapping rather than learning, despite advertising. I paid extra for the 1000 jazz standards, but they are horrible. The baselines and rhythms are not even close to the original. Some are way off and unusable. They all seem to start off with the same clumsy intro no matter the rhythm. I wish I could get a refund.

Almost. I’ve been using this app for roughly 5 years since it’s inception and although the latest features are welcome, the user interface/UX is atrocious. I’ve never had to fight with an app so much just to use it. It completely disrupts the creative flow.

Magnificent!!!. This app is a constant source of inspiration and a wealth of musical information! But be careful cause it's addicting😉

Where was this when I was in school. The visual mapping make music theory do-able and fun

They are using really old version of Band in a Box for Audio and Sheet Music. This app fewer is awful. The author is using old version of Band in the Box.. sound quality is terrible. Sheet music is bare bones. The mapping is ridiculous. All he did was to add Roman numerals to the chords and split them into circles... tannic, dominant, etc, TOTALLY CONFUSING AND UNNECESSARY . NOTHING NEW ABOUT NUMBERING CHORDS AND NO REASON TO SLPIT THEM UP INTO 3 DIFFERENT CIRCLES. THE MAP IS ALWAYS IN THE WAY. AND ADDS NO VALUE. I am trying the Real Book Software, hopefully it will better than this useless app. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Doesn’t work well on iPhone. I made the mistake of purchasing this for my iPhone. It “works” but the tiny tap targets and menu system make it almost impossible to use :( The new update also seemingly makes it impossible to just view the map. Half of the screen is taken up by the score (which I don’t use) making the map even smaller than it was and more impossible to use.

Not worth the trouble. Jazz tunes with wrong changes...waste of time and money.

Mapping tones failures.. I just buy MT and the only way to get charts, is to buy them from the addon or make them. There is no import feature. I declare this a monetary app. Good study app, but not good for my pourpose. Which I can get my money back.

Very powerful app. Not for a beginner and you will need to put effort in to get results back. Definitely worth the effort. This app is allowing me to see the connections. Will keep me busy for awhile. Very impressive, a monster program

Amazing app with amazing supporting videos on YouTube. The developer and those creating this app really understand their stuff. The knowledge and understanding of Harmony is outstanding, and the product really helps to lead users to grasp the concepts deeper. You have to dig a bit to understand all the power (which I don’t even fully understand yet), but I’m really enjoying this so far. Great app for studying harmony and practicing. I’m enjoying this more than iReal Pro. Are there any updates on version 9 for iOS? I bought this specifically because of the updates that were promised/advertised, and it seems it will never come…

Needs a version upgrade. The iPad version just isn’t what the ads say it is.

What is the deal with the login?. With this new version, I do not appreciate having to create a login account before being able to use it

Holy Smoke!. Brilliant app, need some patience to get use to it. Tutorials video available on their website. Thanks so much to the creator of this app. Highly recommended!

Amazing app, but.... This app is great. I love the Standard add on. However, when writing progressions, I am unable to add a pickup note. When I make a blank measure at the beginning with beat 4 having a chord, the drum AI treats that 4th beat as the first one, and it throws the rest of the song off. Also, in the complete map I’m unable to find 9 chords. Thanks!

Solid range of features — one essential one not working. Update: I’ve added a star; the problem I’d needed help was resolved (with reloading and changing initial settings). This app is fascinating in its scope and unique design. I recommend the YouTube tutorial videos—more useful than the un-indexed manual—to help overcome this multi-featured app’s challenging learning curve. Original review: I am using the iOS version on my iPad and it looks great—full of promise— but I am having a frustrating problem: I cannot get MTH to open my iTunes library to work with any music downloaded on my device. Following the instructions in your tutorial video, MTH seems to start to open iTunes: the screen flashes white for an instant, as if starting to open, but then the MTH Audio Mode screen instantly returns with the drop down menu indicating that iTunes is loading. Nothing further happens. Is there a step I’m missing that will allow me to use the app as advertised? Or is there an update/upgrade fix coming? (I trust that that this program has not been orphaned.) Thanks for your good woks and kind assistance.

Not as easy as advertised.. I’m having difficulty importing xml I can see the file in the download folder but when I click it nothing happens. I’m using an iPad Pro last generation.

Aha!. My buck has been sufficiently banged! Thank you for such a brilliantly thought out program. The perfect harmonic theory app for me. Learning (so much) while doing. And when the right idea comes along, I can "crud" and save it. Five stars.

Amazing. Amazing app just wish it had time signature changes besides 3/4 and 4/4

Poor development. The new version obliterates your battery both while using and through background refresh.

Attention Music Theory Students!. This app will be invaluable to you. It is beyond awesome in helping you to see musical relationships, composing, songwriting, and the big one Song Analysis! Buy it. It is really visually appealing too!

Very frustrating.. They claim that it is simple to download progressions. It is not. I followed the directions given exactly as written and was unable to open the files. iReal Pro uses a simple select and tap system for downloads. With iReal Pro it took less than a minute to download 1300 jazz standards. I worked for over an hour with Mapping Tonal Harmony, no luck. I own both apps and when it comes to downloading progressions, iReal Pro beats Mapping Tonal Harmony hands down. Also, iReal Pro is less expensive to own.

Love this app. Hi I am been looking for other MTH Pro user to learn with either on face book but cannot find others in my 50’s

Wonderful. A brilliant app. I wish I had something like this when I was in college. Just a few hours with it has changed the way I see hramonic functions. Very useful.

Buggy, but good. I downloaded this app yesterday and it is full of bugs that keep you from being able to see everything on the screen. It is very annoying and keeps me from being able to use the app as intended. I have found work arounds, but they require more time and unnecessarily complicate the processes this app is supposed to simplify. Please fix, developers. Once resolved, this app will but a 5 out of 5.

Wonderful app and excellent support. MDecks puts out some wonderful stuff and they have provided me excellent support

Please wait! Mapping Tonal Harmony Pro app comments loading...
