Poor Customer Service and Unjust Treatment. Update: I’ve changed my rating from 2 to 1. To add insult to injury, my account was falsely reported and it resulted in having my voiceroom privileges taken away. I host a popular voiceroom for English practice and all I do on this app is try to teach and help people and I’m met with further injustice. Also, don’t promote or mention any other social media platforms on your page or you’ll have posts taken down and be threatened to be removed from the app altogether. It is the only platform that does this and it just forces people to use other apps instead. HelloTalk keeps getting worse. I was a teacher and user of the app and voiced suggestions on how to better teacher experience as well as made complaints about the poor customer service that I had received and I was removed from the live teachers chat and from having my classes promoted. The Customer Service team including Judy, Fay in Payments, and HelloTalk support contributed to this unjust treatment and have done nothing to rectify it. They have proven that they are more concerned about making money than the teachers and users that make the app what it is.

Practice with natives for FREE!. HelloTalk has been a game changer for my Spanish learning. I have the opportunity to practice with natives every day without spending any money. Whether by listening and speaking in Voicerooms, or doing calls with Spanish friends I have made on the app, I get more practice here than any other way. Learning a language can be very expensive, and I love that HT is very user friendly for those who are not paid subscribers. There are a few features that only paid subscribers can access, but overall the experience if quite nice in the free version. That means a lot when every app and program usually requires a portion of your paycheck. There are some strange people on the app, and I know some people have had bad experiences. For myself, I’ve gotten lucky and made many good friends. There is a block option if you are having trouble with one person in particular, and you can also set your profile so only people of your gender can see it. I did this, and it cut out the DMs from people looking for a “relationship”. Overall this app has been my best find in my learning journey, and I highly recommend it. If you have the extra money, the premium version would be a good investment too. But be assured, you don’t need to spend any money to learn in this app.

Great app :). Overall it’s great and, as with everything, there are pros and cons. Pro: This app is an amazing way to practice the #1 language that you’ve been learning even if you already have people around who speak it. Though it can be difficult to find people who will stick with you for the long haul, you can meet some pretty incredible people! There are so many different countries represented that you’ll even be able to learn about many different accents and cultures in your new language. Con: The con is that you should probably be close to the intermediate level before joining. I’ve learned that this is not a place to find teachers as a novice, but a place to practice what you’ve already learned. There will most likely be times when your partner doesn’t know how to express themselves in your language, so you have to have a basic understanding in order to get the general idea of what they’re saying. The translator is great, but sometimes it makes no sense.

Absolutely amazing. I’ve used pretty much every language method, tool, and book out there, and while some have been very good, none compare with HelloTalk. I joined ten days ago and think I’ve spent more hours studying than in the previous two months. For example, I’ve already done six hours of zoom chats, when until now I’ve only done an hour a week because tutoring is so expensive. And the only reason I haven’t done more is because I joined right before Christmas and got busy for a few days. Part of the reason the app works is that people keep talking to you. It’s too easy to put an ebook or Anki or LingQ or whatever on your phone and promptly forget it exists. I was concerned when I joined that there might be a lot of creeps and weirdos using it as a dating site, but out of 217 people that have visited my profile (in ten days!) only two were obnoxious and their accounts got deleted soon after, so HelloTalk is doing a really good job keeping it clean. You’re basically guaranteed to find at least a handful of normal people you hit it off with and talk to regularly. If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m really impressed with the app and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Was better before. As a VIP member for years, I have watched the experience decline. Changes and updates come as the company tries to improve I’m sure, the motives are good but the company has removed many standard features that made it fun and more resourceful in terms of social connections and friends. No longer are you able to search for connections once lost. For whatever reason, maybe your phone was stolen or you updated etc... sometimes chats get deleted and you lose it all. Before you could try to reconnect and search. Now it’s impossible so that is definitely a failure in my opinion. They have made updates requiring you to purchase VIP if you want like 10-15 useful features. Over time I have seen how they have controlled the supply of benefits and keep finding ways little by little to make more money and give people less options. The learning programs inside the all are great but again that’s even an extra cost, even for an already VIP customer So... the app works good and it’s fun but it has definitely lowered the experience and resources and it seems just to get more money But the removing the searching ability, that was just simply a bad idea. If someone feels harassed they need to report it, block them and move on. Don’t punish all for one or few mistake. One person poops their pants and everyone is forced to wear diapers.

Great, but…. I like this app!! I’ve been able to talk with native Spanish speakers and make some new friends! This app is helpful with connections! Of course, they’re are in app purchases (VIP) that grant you more features, but one that I don’t think should be behind a paywall is limited time in voice rooms. It’s really irritating and unnecessary. I was just having a really good conversation with someone and got cut off by the horrid limit, and because of that, I may never speak to that person again. We didn’t follow each other. So here I am now. Can’t talk to that person, or anyone else. This is very discouraging for me, because I want to speak with people in real time, and now I have to find somewhere else to do that. I’m sure out of the thousands or millions of users, im not the only one. If anything, I think that the one☝🏾 thing that shouldn’t have to be paid for is time to speak with others. I rest my case.

Issa no. Honestly worst app for language learning. I’m never able to find a language partner but people love texting me because I’m american to help them learn English but won’t help me learn my desired language ( Spanish ) . This app is treated like a dating app from the masses and most of the time texting people to learn language exchange never go anywhere, I have to text first and if I don’t keep the convo a float the ship is sinking. This will be my last and final time downloading this app. Luckily I met a few people who would actually help me learn Spanish but besides that I would rather just self-educate and use the few resources I have such as friends. This app for Americans is not fair game your pretty much used as a teach to others and it’s not reciprocated in most cases in my opinion for the language learning experience. This is pretty much just an online dating app just be honest… finding a language partner is like finding a diamond in a pile of rocks. If you actually wanna grow language wise and not be up stagnant in your language learning I wouldn’t recommend.

Good Overall. In my opinion, this is the best app on the market for finding language partners to talk with. There are a lot of people and A LOT of activity in the moments area. It’s a language specific social media platform, and it really makes it easy, even if you’re a little uncomfortable, to at least find some place to use your target language. My only complaint, and what keeps it from the full 5-stars, is it’s inability to sync your data effectively. Occasionally you’ll get a notification but be unable to read it. If you reinstall, then you can see it BUT you’ll lose your chat history. It has a similar problem with using both the iPad and iPhone apps. One message will get sent to the iPad, the other the iPhone. It would be worth it to me to save my chat history/data in iCloud. But it’s a fantastic app otherwise, with a pleasant community.

Disturbing number of ads. I loved this app for a couple of months and then I noticed that I was getting increasing amounts of ads. I couldn’t turn off the notifications so I always thought I was getting messages from people but it was just hellotalk harassing me constantly. I have never been so irritated by an app. I turned off notifications so I could get some peace but then I started missing messages from friends. I told all my friends to start messaging me on another app because this one was too annoying and many of them agreed that the app has become impossible to use. I’ve never written a review in my life but I just had to say something. I will give this app another chance maybe in a year to see if it has improved but I’m deleting it for now. Also if you are considering tandem it had less ads for a long time but lately it has become almost as bad as hellotalk. It started out so well, it’s a shame they had to get greedy. It’s like AOL all over again.

Ignore the other reviews. Other people writing reviews on here (especially if you look at the most recent ones) are being unreasonable. It’s not HelloTalks fault that other idiots in the voice rooms say things that upset you… just block or report them, ITS NOT THAT HARD! Every good app like this is gonna have people who use it as a dating app… so I recommend just block people that you don’t wanna talk to. I have had people make more accounts after I blocked them, but just keep blocking them. Also using a profile picture of your face is a bad idea because if you aren’t looking for attention this is a bad way to stop it. HelloTalk is a wonderful and more than helpful app and people need to realize that it’s not HelloTalks fault. Please stop leaving bad ratings when it’s not their fault! Another thing you should note is while you may have great friends on the app, they may not last too long so don’t get to upset, and don’t let it discourage you from making new friends! 🫶🏻

Great potential… too many creeps. I downloaded this app per a recommendation from my Spanish professor. The first message I received immediately commented on my appearance. Unfortunately, this was a common occurrence. I felt so harassed that I changed my profile picture multiple times in an attempt to stop people from commenting on it. Unfortunately this did not stop the comments, and I decided to delete the app after only having it for 2 days. Additionally, I was extremely overwhelmed by the number of people messaging me; at the time that I deleted the app, I had 67 unread messages. The tools that this app provides are awesome, and they would be a great tool to practice my Spanish, however I cannot being myself to use an app that makes me feel ashamed just for using a photo of my face as my profile picture. One of the top rules of the app are that it is not to be used as a dating app, but there is no way to stop people from using it in such a way. One message I received said “I like women from the USA, they’re pretty like you.” I wish I could take advantage of the resources on this app, but there needs to be changes before I can bring myself to download it again.

A must have for language learners!. HelloTalk is probably the best language learning app you could download. I use it everyday and have learned so much Spanish because of it. One of the best features is the wall of moments (this is a feature Tandum doesn’t have as of no), which I’ve used to ask questions to the HelloTalk community about grammar, vocab, and to post advice and lessons about English. The correction feature is also great and I like how you can save the corrections people give you. In the past year I’ve visited Mexico, Spain, Peru, Chile and Argentina, and I was able to meet up with friends I met on HelloTalk while I was there! My only critique would be I wish you could make video calls without having to pay for the premium versoin (this is something you can do in Tandem). Nevertheless, I’ve literally recommended HelloTalk to anyone I’ve met trying to learn a language. It’s a must.

It’s 50/50. I don’t totally hate this app. I’ve had it for a few days and have already found a good group of friends who will teach me Korean in a very light hearted, friendly manor. Which I’m thankful for. My biggest issue is the 90 minute time limit on the voice room. And once your 90 minutes is up, you have to wait 12 or 24 hours (I forgot which) to join another voice room. When you find a nice group to chat with, time flies by so easily and you’ll be mid conversation when all of a sudden you’re kicked from the room. My second biggest issue is the pricing for vip. ~9-12 dollars a month is just over too expensive. The benefits of vip are immense and very tempting. However, I’m sure there are more people out there (talking about the whole world here) that would definitely pay the monthly fee if it were just a bit cheaper. And in the end the profits would likely come out to being the same. My solution, and I hope you take this into consideration, is to lower the monthly price (not raise the discount percentage. The actual price) and give non-vip people an optional 2-3 60 second ads that can let people continue to chat even after the 90 minutes. Perhaps 30-45 minutes. That way you’re receiving revenue while users are able to continue to chat with friends pay free. Personally, if the monthly payment was 5-6 dollars, I would buy it

Islamophobia, Racism, Censorship and Silencing. This app is supported by the communist government of China which doesn’t have basic rights like freedom of speech. Just because the app is made in China that doesn’t mean you can apply chinese laws onto the app users. This app is used by people from around the world. This app censors any posts related to Islam, Palestine or speaking on the Israel government. But they don’t censor posts on Christianity or Judaism, why specifically Islam? Whenever someone makes a post about Palestine it is very rare that people will see it, they will make the post visible to the poster but other people cannot see it and they will give you a shadow ban. If you post something saying that the Israeli government is an apartheid government and they are a illegal occupation they will also ban your post from being visible. But people from “Israel” are allowed to make posts praising the IDF?! This is total and complete hypocrisy, we are in 2024 everyone deserves the right to respect and speaking their mind especially when what they are saying is the truth. Also in voice rooms whenever the topic is Islamic topics, people face issues with connecting or hearing properly it’s like this app is purposely designed to mistreat Muslims.

Best language app for learning Russian and Mandarin Chinese. I can not say enough good things about this app, especially as it applies to Russian and Chinese (which is rare in terms of language apps). I really think it’s the best thing for language immersion next to actually living in a different culture. Hellotalk actually makes me motivated to practice everyday without noticing I’m doing some really hardcore studying. The social media platform, group audio chats, voice recording so I can hear myself and native speakers talk, watch live classes, high quality lessons, and the ease at which you can look up words and grammar HelloTalk has improved my language skills more than four years of college classes... Plus I have made some very meaningful friendships through the app. Suggestions: please allow photos in comments; if possible allow for opening comments, photos and translator while doing audio recordings; and improve navigation to messages and notifications (after looking at mine or browsing other moments and users’ pages, I always have to hit the back button a hundred times to get back to messages and lessons... am I missing something on that?) Hope this review helps.

A Good Intro and Good in Theory. If you're looking to expose yourself to more native content or speakers in a language you're learning, this is a great place to start! But actually finding solid advice and explanations is much harder haha. I'm learning English > Japanese so my experiences may not be universal among the community, but the user-base as a whole could stand to be far more critical when giving feedback. People will let small mistakes slip through and give learners a pass despite the fact that what they are saying IS incorrect, probably to try and seem polite. And I've seen more than a few people giving straight up WRONG advice- mostly non-native English speakers explaining English to others, but theres been a few native speakers who explain things poorly or give incorrect feedback as well. I think the moments feature is really hindered by the inability to edit comments or corrections after you send them, and the way comments are ordered under posts can be really confusing. The fact that you can't reply to a comment, only tag them in your own under the same post, is mind boggling, especially because they're in reverse chronological order. There's also no way to "downvote" other peoples corrections in those instances where they're giving the wrong advice, which can lead to misunderstanding and misinformation. You basically just have to take all the advice you get from this app with a grain of salt.

Best language exchange app. I use this to learn Spanish and mainly to practice my speaking skills. It’s great when you don’t have anyone to speak with at home or you don’t have the opportunity to go to a different country and learn the language. Hellotalk is my favorite language learning app because of all of the cool features, translator, corrector, voice notes, calls, etc. They even have a timeline like twitter where you can post anything and also see posts in the language you’re learning. One of my favorite things about the app is being able to search for people by country or city. I prefer to speak with people from PR, DR, or Cuba because I’m working on trying to improve my accent as well as learn the Caribbean dialect. So being able to easily search that way is a plus! I’ve tried many language apps and this is by far my favorite!

Maybe an accident??. I love this app, it’s very helpful and makes me want to learn. You meet other people who make you feel better about learning a language. I’m in my younger years so I get help from people closer to my age group. It makes me more comfortable to talk to people my age, I’m glad that you can be any age and not have any restrictions. But here’s the problem! A notice keeps coming up on my screen to tell me dating is not allowed. I’m not talking to anyone sexually, I’m using the app for what it’s meant to be. It annoys me that it comes up so many times when I’m not doing anything wrong! I also help people learn my native language English, but when I try to message people it comes back it interrupts me from chatting. It probably makes the other people think I’m leaving them on read. It’s confusing. I didn’t know if it’s meant to be there just to tell me, or if is accidental. OR if it thinks I’m really doing something wrong! Please help!

Don’t waste your time. I have been using the app strictly to help English learners and I posted videos to help people with their English and they suspended my account. I’ve been following the rules and even pay for a VIP subscription. This also happened to a friend of mine who paid for the VIP subscription. I think HELLOTALK is just out for people’s money. So disappointed, all I wanted to do was help people with their English, I do it completely for free and this is how I’m treated. Added to the developer response: Again, don’t waste your time, why pay for a VIP subscription if you’re only limited to post a moment once or twice a week. Maybe, instead of suspending an account remove the post like how YouTube/Facebook/Instagram does. It’s not fair to people who pay for a subscription and is following the rules. Basically, you’re saying someone can ask people to report a person and they can target that person and you’ll suspend the reported account. Please do more investigating before suspending an account, posting three different helpful videos within 24 hours shouldn’t make someone’s account be suspended.

Complete Scam. So, not only is the app dead, not only do you not find language partners, but HelloTalk gotta challenge in HelloWords that if you play the game for a month, you can get a free month. This is a great, fun challenge to keep you motivated, but I’ve tried this challenge constantly and I haven’t won yet mainly because sometimes I forget, because there’s NO notifications for it, but other times, it literally seems like the challenge is rigged. I lost the challenge yesterday, and I didn’t even know, and I saw it was marked down for yesterday (Tuesday), because I forgot Monday. Then today (Wednesday), I wanted to give it another shot because at least yesterday (Tuesday) was checked off, but no. When I revisited it, it switched the days on me. So I got Monday, even tho I played that at midnight, so it would count as the NEXT DAY, and missed Tuesday, even tho I LITERALLY PLAYED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY)!! This app is dead, you can’t find language partners, and the only Possible thing that helped me hold on to this app, is RIGGED!

the absolute BEST app for language learners. when i tell you i NEVER write reviews i mean in my entire decade of using the App Store i have never felt strongly enough about any app to even consider writing a review but this app is honestly better than any app out there for language learning and i have used them ALL (the money costing ones too). it’s literally a form of social media for people who want to learn languages! like, i don’t know about anyone else but that is my dream come true. you can set it to show you people in your general age range too which is awesome because you’re socializing and talking about things that are relevant to you while also becoming more and more fluent in a language. i swear I’ve had the app under 24 hours now and i’ve learned more words than i think i’ve learned in total from other apps. even the actual lessons are interesting because they’re immersive and teaching words that you are interested to learn using scenarios you will actually find yourself in. and that is coming from someone who just listened to 20 minutes tops of lessons in a language i’d been putting off learning for years! and i DESPISE studying! it seriously feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders especially now that i have something to do that isn’t frying my brain while i’m locked up in my house for quarantine. thank you so much to whoever thought up such a marvelous concept!

Good for practicing with native speakers. It looks like the app expanded and added courses and games you can do in-app. That being said, I don't see how one can justify a $150 USD lifetime subscription for basically a social media app without including the courses and games with that pricing. The price basically allows you to search for people nearby, unlimited translations (you can copy and paste outside the app so this is not really a perk), make more phone calls (again, you can do this outside the app with other options). All in all, aside from getting rid of apps that take up a good chunk of the timeline feed, I don't see how else $150 justifies the few benefits aside from saying "thank you" to the developers. From what I can tell, it looks like the courses provided through the app are all third-party companies and those are charged separately from the subscription options.

Good Idea, Could Be Better in Practice. The idea is fantastic and needs little adjustments. However, some of the things are just not right. For example, if you want to use HelloTalk with no cost, then you are only allowed to have one native language and one language that you are learning. And then there is another feature that allows you to "hide your views" which means your profile viewing history is private. It's already weird that it's public to the person anyway. Finally, your messages are not backed up and you may only use one device for one account. Your messages are only backed up on that specific device. So if you log onto another device then those messages are basically wiped. But that's it, you should still use this app due to its popularity and its help to your language learning. Ignoring all of the negatives I just listen, this app would be 5 stars.

Overall good, but some fixing up!. I think the app is great and all but I don’t like how we have limits of translations, I don’t need you to fix it I would just appreciate that you would. So I say the game is 4 stars and I know some users may disagree with me, and that’s okay! I don’t really mind anything else. But I feel like what if you met someone and you forgot that this is a learning app not a social app, this is not a complaint I was just thinking that there is some users, for example my sister she has hello talk and she has a Friend that she made in the app and she doesn’t really seem to be learning anything by her friend. I am just pointing out that there is users who do that! I don’t mind if they do it’s just that if this is a learning app why are they just talking and not teaching each other. If you users disagree that’s okay, we all have different opinions for all kinds of things! Anyways have a good one!

IDK 🤷‍♀️. I have been using the app for only about 4 days now, and I don’t feel comfortable on the app and I’m not sure why. It may just be me but I am trusting my gut and logging out of account and also deleting it off my phone. Overall, it is amazing for language learning and actually pretty safe! There isn’t lot of learning material to study from but lots of people you can chat with! I was very overwhelmed by the amount of people trying to chat with me which is amazing but it started interfering with my day to day life and I had it for less than a week 😂 One person on the app did make me feel very uncomfortable when I chatted with them and I think that’s one of the main reasons I deleted it. You can report those people, turn of their message notifications, and even remove them or block them. I definitely don’t discourage using the app but just be careful and safe as you should be on every other social media or messaging platform!

SOLVED: “Feature Not Available in your Area” Makes app unusable. Edit: I was able to get in touch with customer support and they were very quick to resolve the problem once they saw my ticket. Note to self and others, don’t use a VPN when using the app to prevent any confusion. I can’t wait to use it this weekend and continue my language journey and conversation practice! ….. I’ve been getting this error message for two days now. I’ve tried to contact support via email, Twitter, and the app and haven’t heard anything. I’m in the US and even allowed the app to track my exact location. Deleted and uninstalled the app as well. It was working a few days ago which is what makes me sad since I really enjoyed the live event I attended and loved that there were live captions in my target language. But this app is now unusable and I can’t figure out why or get help from app support. I haven’t even been able to find any support forums online to help me troubleshoot this further.

The best app on the App Store in my opinion. If you are learning a language, this app is a MUST have. Not only will you learn the language that you’re studying faster than on any other app, but you’ll have fun in the process. You’ll forget you’re even learning a language it’s so much fun. Because of this app, I now not only know how to speak German near fluently, but I also have made some of the best friends I could ever ask for. Ultimately, that matters to me more than learning any language. I also mentioned this app during my college essay. This app helped me grow as a person and broadened the horizons for me in terms of new friendships, a curiosity to explore the world, wisdom and linguistic knowledge. The essay was recently returned with an acceptance letter. I owe it to Hello Talk. I was recommended this app by one of my classmates who was using it, and I decided to give it a try a few weeks later, without too much excitement. The days that followed were some of the most productive, fun and eye-opening of my life, I swear, this app is awesome. Even now, one of my best friends in Germany and I laugh about how boring life would’ve been had we not downloaded this app at the right time and had never even gotten to say “hallo” to each other for the first time hahahahahaha

It’s so good!. So the thing is that since you’re talking to actual people you’re forced into learning practical speech and things that you’d actually say all the time, which is absolutely not a bad thing. Any anyways it’s much more fun talking to an actual person. When you sign up you have to give your birthday and I’m pretty sure it’s because all of the people you end up talking to are around the same age as you (assuming you don’t lie about your birthday), which makes talking about pop culture and things you like to do a lot easier since it’s much more likely you’d have something in common with some one the same age as you than some 20 years older than you. It also makes making friends around the globe na lot easier in general (even for someone who isn’t very sociable like me). Everyone I’ve talked to was super excited to try to improve my language skills.

Love it. I love it no complaint it’s not anything bad but I would like some help because I had this app a while ago and I deleted because I wanted to get another app and then now I remembered about it so I installed it and tried signing in but I couldn’t because I didn’t remember the password , so I decided to create another one ... I tried and it said that you can only make one account on each device . So the problem with that is that I don’t know how to make a new email to use , so I want to ask if you could help me get rid of the other account with my email so I could create the new one , or help me find my password because I tried the thing that said “ forgot password?” , Or something like that and it wouldn’t send me an email ( now that I realize maybe it is because I don’t have the mail app ) and said that it was non registered . So that’s it it is a great app overall . UPDATE: Ok so I downloaded the mail app and it still didn’t work which I know feel like I was being dum about that so my only thug is that if you could erase my previous account. But I am blaming myself because I don’t remember it and apparently my only email doesn’t work .

Overall good!. I have used this app for over two years now. I think this app is a great idea, and overall implemented very well. I use Hellotalk to practice Japanese, and find that overall people are courteous and honestly want to learn. I quite like the Moments function, and in my experience people use it to share pictures of where they live, or ask many people for language corrections, which is great. Now, there are many superfluous posts like “ Please teach me English!!!”, but I think it is a small price to pay. I do wish that Moments allowed for video posting, though. Many times there are short clips of concerts or scenery that I would love to share with people. As for sexual harassment, whenever it has happened, it is generally handled quickly in my experience. However, I do know of a few notorious people that keep rejoining the app despite being blocked many times. There is not much that can be done for those people, but hopefully they will learn someday. There are some people that are more interested in finding a foreign girlfriend/ boyfriend, but it is easy to find these people and kindly decline or misdirect them. I have had this issue on an off, but sometimes my app will show unread messages, but I cannot see them. Before I would have to delete and redownload to fix it, but as of today when it did it I was able to fix it by closing and reopening the app. It isn’t a huge inconvenience, but a bit annoying at times.

Unfortunately. At first, when I created an account in HT I saw it as really interesting You can have a conversation with native speakers of the language that you want to learn, and through their Flags, you can easily know where are they from and which language they speak, I also had a flag in there but then all of a sudden they removed our flag even though we have an independent autonomy region and we have our government and an official language, so it causes too much confusion, by removed KURDISTAN flag the Kurdish people had to put the flags they are not belongs to them and when we join voice rooms they keep talking us the language that we are not native speakers, there are many other region that's are also don't have an independent country but they still have their flag, so that's a really bad point for an app that there goals to help people learn the languages and different cultures, so u should bring back the KURDISTAN flag and stay away of politics. so everyone focuses will be into the language that they want to learn or teach others.

Not Worth IT. This application records your conversations in VRs and of course, has logs of all your chats. If you continue to police people’s conversations and slap them with bans and it doesn’t go against community guidelines you are stealing money when people have VIP accounts. Also, there is no appeal process either. You just get a ban. They don’t speak English that well, so when they provide proof it doesn’t even make sense and it’s always out of order and context. They don’t answer either. I wanted to change my flag because I’m from two countries and they wanted me to send a video recording of myself stating my name and in the language of said country. When creating an account you don’t have to do that and if you did I would never use it. You pay for a lifetime, yearly, or monthly and receive 0 customer service. Why spend all that money? You also pay for stickers, sending gifts and room/mic/chat bubble effects. Just use the free version and don’t waste your time and money. A lot of better apps with less policing involved.

My favorite app!. I have been a member on this app since 2014 and I honestly have not gotten bored or tired of it. It still continues to be a fun and interactive way to learn languages. I love the new features added with every update. This app seriously has come a long way from when I first became a member. You learn a language through a sort of social media platform, where you post statuses similar to Facebook or twitter, but with the added bonus that native speakers actually get to read and correct your texts, and you can help out as well by doing the same with people learning your language. I have met so many fun and intelligent people on this apps from so many countries, and I love hearing their ideas and sharing each other’s cultures. It’s exciting getting a message from someone and engaging in a fun conversation with them. Sure, it has its downsides. Like for example, may girls report getting harassed, but in all honestly, you choose who you want to talk to and who you don’t want to talk to. Anyone can easily be blocked. Anyway, I really love this app and I thank its developers for making learning languages fun!

Used to be an amazing app. This app used to be really good, but with their updated policies this app is become communist and really really stupid. You have to be careful what you talk about anymore or you could end up getting kicked out. For example, you can’t say anything about China and you can’t say anything about religion you can’t say anything about politics. Even if it has to do with culture or anything else. These three things are part of culture and sometimes are subject of conversation. As a broadcaster sometimes I like to use the Bible as a form of teaching English because it is a perfect form of English. But when someone doesn’t like it, they decide to report it then all of a sudden you get notified that you’re talking about religion, and threaten to be kicked out. if people don’t wanna talk about it, all they have to do is leave and move on not use the admin as a tool to try to get you kicked out. We should have the freedom to talk about whatever we want to and if somebody uses threats or violence, then that’s a crowns to be picked out but not just because the subject was talk about.

Don’t pay! Might be a scam!. I used this app for years so one day I decide to buy the lifetime subscription, cause what the heck it’s been helpful for me to find people to practice with and I’d been using the app for about 4 years on and off. So I pay $80 for the lifetime subscription to support the app since I think it’s really great and it’ll allow me to practice more than one language at a time. A few days later my account stops working. I can’t send or receive messages anymore. The only way to get in touch with support is to send them a message, using the same broken message feature. Well that’s certainly useful. I did some more digging and noticed some other paid users were also having trouble with messages. Possible scam? I will try to get my money back from Apple if these clowns don’t get back to me. Seriously irritating. I thought there was some major service outage but apparently it’s just my paid account. Use the app at your own risk, and don’t pay them any money it’s actually not worth it.

Great App (Just a Suggestion). I really love this app, it has given me nothing but joy ever since I got it, my only problem with it is that I feel like in order to truly meet people, you have to buy the membership, which is fine, but it is a little expensive nonetheless for just a month it’s about 8 dollars, if it was cheaper I could understand, but it’s just a little expensive in my opinion. I have made a lot of international friends and I think it’s cool you can translate things at a click of a button, but honestly I don’t think it is really fair to have someone run out of translations, what if I really want to talk to someone and I can’t because I don’t understand? Do I just leave them forever? Or do I fork over 8 dollars... That is my only problem with this app, other than that this is such a great way of learning and meeting new people!!

Another developer blinded by greed. Hopefully this app will see a mass exodus of its users since its developers, blinded by greed, have decided to add pay-walls on what used to be freely available features. It makes me not want to reward that kind of money-grabbing behavior by buying another 1year pro membership. It feels like a feature is taken away with each update I am forced to make. Previously I was rewarded a pro membership for a month but none of the pro features worked. TRANSLITERATION worked fine for me before and now doesn't work most of the time (it comes up blank or is in the wrong language. I feel cheated and it seems like it's a sneaky ploy to make you pay to upgrade. I've been using this app since day one and have used it on a Note2, LG G3, S6 (all with some glitches) and had high hopes for it on my iPhone 10. It would be great if you could add two languages spoken without paying extra. I would be helping more people at least and surely that's a positive. I have improved greatly in my Spanish and Portuguese partly due to this app so I continue to recommend it to people but I have not had one person start a conversation since paying for the VIP subscription. This is bizarre as I did when I was an ordinary member.

Developer changes features without giving warning. I have been using HelloTalk for a few years now. At first, I only used the features for one-on-one conversations, but last year (in May) I started to use the public feed every day in order to post a daily journal and get feedback. I didn't know, though, that these posts were being filtered by the HelloTalk system. There have been a handful of time when my posts were blocked because of, in my opinion, overprotective measures. More recently, though, I learned that they're also filtering the photos that can be posted with the writing. They've apparently decided that selfies are somehow at war with language learning, so these are blocked from the public feed. I skyped with a friend a few days ago, took a screenshot of us chatting and posted that along with my daily journal, and apparently the filter thought it was a selfie, so it was also blocked. I have been a paying subscriber to their app and a very active user, but when these changes were made, I was not made aware of them, nor did I even get a pop-up or something to be notified when my post was blocked/caught in the filter. I am currently very disappointed by the developers.

Network errors and issues but otherwise great app. Love the potential of the app and met some really good people however as of late I have been getting frequent crashes and apparently some people (not all) had been able to contact me for about 30 days and thought I was disconnected. As of today constant network errors (really bad since the last update) until finally I was considered completely disconnected and unable to do anything despite getting a few messages in return yet unable to send or view any myself (but could still see the message previews on the iphone home screen). Now having tried clearing cache and doing all the network stuff on my end, I decided to try reinstalling (after hard copying the ids of friends should I need to create a whole new account). Now I cannot log into Hellotalk as it seems my password was entered incorrectly too many times even though I just reset it once. I’ll see what happens after the needed 24 hour wait period to try again. It’s a shame as I loved helping others learn, meeting people from other countries, and sharing culture. Edit: thanks Hellotalk team, the issues were solved and thank you for the timely responses

Fantastic! Wish I could give it 10 stars!. This app has completely changed my motivation for practicing Spanish. I’ve always wanted to learn to speak and dreamed of having fluent conversations in Spanish. But it is intimidating to speak with people when you are first learning the language. This app covers literally everything you could want when learning a language. 1). Real people. You are having conversations with real people from all over the world who want to practice with you and will help you learn...no matter what level you are. 2). Texting. At first, it can be a bit scary to just hope on and try your hand at speaking. You don’t have to. You can spend time texting with people and creating “moments” were people can correct mistakes and guide you through the process. Plus, you get to read so many posts and chats in the language you want to learn that you get used to doing it and become more comfortable. 3) Audio messages. Still worried about having a tough time conversing? Don’t because you can ease into it by just recording audio and leaving it up. You can talk to other people or in the moments. You can also use this feature to ask others how to pronounce words/phrases. Brilliant tool! 4) Call people! You can make friends from all over the world and practice your English practically any time you want. This app is one of the best apps I have ever used. I absolutely recommend it for anyone learning a new language.

Anti-American, Anti-LGBT. First, I am a paid VIP member of HelloTalk, and am very experienced with this platform. This app’s high rating causes me to question who’s doing the rating and how the ratings are compiled and/or manipulated. The fact of the matter is that the overwhelming majority of users are from parts of the world which view the US negatively. Thus, slurs against Americans are commonplace, and —from my experience — administrators do nothing to remove or even discourage anti-American posts. It should be noted that I never once saw a US user use any language even remotely approaching an ethnic slur against anyone. Worse yet is the harassment aimed at those who identify as LGBT in their profiles. Other users can say what they want — both in public and private chats — and they go unpunished. LGBT users, however, can have their account suspended for any reason, based simply on a false report from a homophobic user who suddenly realizes they’re talking to a gay person. Appeals to administrators are either ignored, meet with insensitivity, or result in further harassment. Perhaps this app simply reflects the attitude of the country where the owners are based, and I am projecting my values onto them. But I feel my values are shared by many others in the western world, and that potential HelloTalk users should be forewarned.

Super fun & engaging app! :D. This app is super fun! It’s basically social media for learning a language. I have the free version and have already gotten so much out of it. Imagine it working like a more academic-focused version of instagram: you can “follow” people/have “friends”, make posts, see what other people post (but you can see anyone’s posts, not just the people you follow), etc. You are able to see when native speakers of the language you want to learn are on the app and can message people to practice speaking each other’s languages. You also have the option to choose who is able to contact you. For example, I set my account so that only other females who are in my age range are able to contact me. I’ve been able to learn a lot through using this app and have made a couple friends! Highly recommend!

This app is amazing - the users can be overwhelming. The features of this app are incredible. It has everything you need in one place to communicate with someone who speaks another language, and to practice speaking another language. I love the translate feature which can translate an audio recording into text of its native language, and then provide a translation into an alternative language. You can check sentences you’ve typed through a translator to make sure you said what you thought you said. It’s incredible. I took one star off because of issues with users. The app does not have an easy way to change my profile settings to avoid this problem. I am a 47 year old married woman. I am overwhelmed by the number of men from other countries who reach out. You can’t reply to them all, but of the handful I did reply to, 90% try to get romantic and they do it fast. Uggh! Two have told me they are looking for true love - which apparently only exists in The US with a woman who barely speaks their native language. If you can find a good partner - this app is amazing and totally worth it.

Get this app NOW. This app is so totally awesome ❤️❤️❤️!!! Finally a new way to learn languages that isn’t just taking boring classes... It’s a perfect modern way to learn languages, cultures and make friends from all over the world 🌎 I’m learning Japanese on this app and now I have tons of friends from Japan and other countries,( I’ve been really good friends with a girl from Ageria, and a boy from the U.S too ever since I started this app ) It’s amazing being able to talk to people your age from all over the world about your hobies, and even help each other with their school work😂, and it doesn’t matter what language you speak ! The translation function on this app is super accurate👍. Also, I really enjoy the fact this app is very secure and you don’t have to worry about cyber bullying or harassment or inappropriate language or anything! Seriously, this is my favorite app ever... I learnt so many things about the Japanese language and their culture ( one girl even thought me how to make Mochi cookies😋) Thank you sooooo much HelloTalk !!!!!!

HT Doesn’t Abide By Their Own Rules. Hellotalk is an app focused on language learning, or so they state. The following unacceptable behaviors will lead to permanent account removal, which doesn’t happen. Here are their “Unacceptable Behaviors”: (1) Attempted/committed fraud, (2) Provided fake information, (3) Sent Spam, (4) Used abusive language, (5) Sent sexual content, (6) Used the app for dating purposes, (7) Sent religious/political content. Multiple times I submitted reports & even directly messaged HT with provided proof in order to report multiple individuals using HT for dating purposes & for posting religious/ political content, and HT did absolutely NOTHING about it. Instead they blocked me from being able to report anyone further. As a woman using the HT language learning app for the 1st time, I was hoping for a “safe environment” where languages could be exchanged while learning, unfortunately this isn’t the case. DO NOT JOIN HT - if you’re a woman who doesn’t want to be dating harassed or exposed to others religious/ political beliefs —GO TO TANDEM INSTEAD, BECAUSE THEY WILL TAKE ACTION!!

Another China based app company asking copy of your ID!!!!. Read the privacy policy and data processing before using this app!!! I have been using this app for awhile. Yesterday I got a message from HT team saying my account is suspended because someone complained about me. They are asking send them a document to show my identity. My question to HT is what proof you have from that person who complains about me so that you suspend me sending message? Why would I share my Id with you while I did not do anything wrong? If you look are my moments I havent post anything that is not related to the language and grammer. Can you please check if I had any message exchange with the person who complained about me? You can do that right. If that is a person who complained about me had exchange messages me would you please ask the person reveal the messages to see if anything wrong? Or just check the messages if there is any between us. I give you the permission. It is ridiculous the way you process this. If you are really concern about the members identity then ask everyone provide the ID when while joining the app. Also can you please check everyone's id in this app because it is also my concern now that your app is full of trolls and fake ppl, criminals, hackers. How will you deal with that now???? I will also complain about your improper practice to App store.

They do not tell you how to cancel your VIP subscription. My review of HelloTalk would be good, but their is a big issue that makes any of its benefits useless. I purchased a VIP subscription, because unless you already know the language you are studying well you will struggle. The VIP subscription is very useful with many cool features. The problem is that I want to cancel my VIP subscription, but keep my account. My goal of learning Spanish is going to have to wait for a few months. I am in college and at the moment getting into medical school requires all of my attention. Anyways, I tried to cancel my subscription to HelloTalk, but there is no way to cancel it inside the app itself. After doing a google search I figured out that you have to cancel the auto renewal in iTunes that apparently is automatically selected when you purchase the subscription. (Pretty convenient for them). The problem is when I view my subscription in iTunes, HelloTalk does not show up. I looked on reddit, Apple support etc. if HelloTalk had a customer support number I could call it would be great, but it seems like they do not. I canceled my Netflix subscription via iTunes with no issues. So why is this App any different. VERY DISHONEST!!!!!

Must have but needs some tweaks. I have had this app for almost two years, it is amazing for meeting people who genuinely want to learn. Yes as most other apps with a social aspect there are some problems when people decide to get on the inappropriate side, however the Hellotalk team has been amazing with blocking, and removing people that you report. Really I have made some amazing international friendships from this app that not only allows you to learn your target language, but to also exchange culture as well! Mostly everyone I have talked to on here is glad to help and we all are learners so nobody can judge! I love this app. The only problem i and others have is that the software needs updating, it loads slow and recently it has been showing notifications for messages but mot loading said messages. Please fix!! The app can be slow at times, if these can be fixed i will definitely continue to spread the word on this app!

I used to like it. This app used to be great, but the amount of censorship and restriction is getting out of hand. I’m an American living in Taiwan and this app severely discriminates against users located in Taiwan (this app is headquartered in China). More than half of my posts get blocked and no one can see them, and I don’t mention anything political or offensive at all except maybe the word “Taiwan”? The app is almost unusable for me now because I can’t share much of anything, unless I only share things completely unrelated to my life. It’s understandable to limit political discussions since it’s a language exchange app, but preventing users from sharing anything about where they live because you deem their location to be political is unacceptable. I am also completely unable to contact anyone in China due to my location in Taiwan. I regret that I had purchased the lifetime VIP membership years ago because it makes it hard to delete my account and waste that purchase. If you value freedom of speech then I would recommend not downloading or using this app.

Great language app, meet cool people!. So I used HelloTalk to help me learn Japanese my first three semesters of college. It’s amazing at what it does and sometimes what it accidentally does. It’s crazy how easy it is to meet people and just start talking. This app truly has a global reach. Also, I’ve ended up making real friendships on this app that are going to last me past my use for it. I’m really appreciative of the developers for connecting people like this. It truly makes the world a smaller place. I’ve used the app both as a normal and premium member. From what I can tell, this app has alot of people working on it so that probably justifies all the adds and constant pushing for you to buy premium. I would say that premium is worth the 80 dollars but I would also ask the developers to tone down the sales pitch for it.

Great app for language learning. I’ve been using the app for nearly two years. I’m finding it’s a great way to have conversations with people from the target language. So many people likeminded wanting to learn language all over the world. Sometimes I can’t have conversations with everyone but finding some good language partners has been valuable. I’m also realising finding creative ways to learn is important and having people at different times when I’m available to respond is what helps me. Thank you HelloTalk.

Disappointing. Immediately asks you to sign up for VIP as soon as you download the app. Like, at least let me try the app before you start shoving the VIP membership down my throat? Also, I have multiple native languages - yet I’m unable to add them without buying VIP. I can’t even figure out a way to change my one (1) permitted native language to something else. Annoying. I can’t actually speak on the quality of the language learning of this app as I am not able to do much without forking over close to $90 every 6 months. Hard pass.

Good but it kicks me out. Up until yesterday, the app was running perfectly. This morning when I tried to open the app, it kept loading onto my message screen and then not allowing me to do anything. The screen was completely frozen on my messages, not allowing me to open anything, then kicking me out after a couple of seconds.

Login issue. I don’t why HelloTalk blocked my device for no reason.. I’ve sent several emails to hellotalk support team but I ain’t getting no reply.. please fix. If not then not a big deal either.

Has bugs... very annoying. Good app but has some super annoying bugs Support was not helpful at all in helping and just kept asking for recordings despite me sending in many Whenever I post a new moment, in the feed it will bring up all my old posts which I then have to scroll through, even after buying an entirely new phone this problem persists.... over it lol Plus I’ve had a few creeps on here too 🤢 most people are nice

i love it 🫶. hello talk is one of the best apps i’ve ever used for language learning ! you can learn efficently from natives which helps you improve on your language skills 🤩 !! everyone on the app are so so nice except for the people who try to use it to date -__- but apart from that, everyone one is willing to help you and they dont put you down for your mistakes :) if you want to improve in whatever language you’re learning, i recommend this app 🤭 good luck on your language learning everyone !! just remember, even if you think learning a different language is hard, everyone believes in you, i believe in you 🫵 !! you got this :D

Good app but.... This is a great app for learning languages and socialising with people. However I wish we had the ability to edit the age we put in. I accidentally put in the wrong age for myself and I can’t change it. It’d be super helpful if you could change it

It’s not terrible. In concept the app is great however if your broke and not willing to pay for it don’t bother, there’s not much you can do or see without paying. also it is rlly buggy when learning words and I don’t think it’s a me problem cos I just got my new phone :/ Other than that it’s a pretty good place to meet other learners and teachers your own age.

I can’t log in. I was using Hello talk for quite sometime now, I had to delete the app and download it again and when I wanted to log in I realised I forgot my password so I have received a request to change HelloTalk password which I did and it says it’s successfully done but when I login with the new password it keeps showing me wrong password error message. How to solve this problem? This is very annoying?!

Suspended for being too sexy?!. I only used this app for less than a day before being notified that I was suspended for having a profile picture that is "too sexy"— mind you, this picture is just of my face. Nothing else implies sexual intent. Can't even learn a foreign language without being objectified. Deleting my account and the app as we speak.

Great app, interface a little unintuitive. I get to talk to many natives ( learning Japanese rn), the free learning features are good and the premium price is reasonable. I will probably go premium soon. Better experience than Tandem to be honest.

Great app for language exchange. This is the best app ever I’ve used for language exchange. People I met were mostly serious about language learning and the various functions are quite handy. It would be better if I could choose not to have red dots notifying me of my visitors. And I’m sorry to say this but your logo design is terrible. Looks like some kind of brain disease.

Good app but unhelpful team. It’s a good social learning app unfortunately my experience with messaging their support team was nothing less than frustrating. Stupidly when setting up my account, I chose a language I wanted to learn as my nationality without realising I couldn’t change it later on. I simply asked them to change my nationality to English since I’m from an English speaking country (Aus) and can only teach English in exchange, but they refused to change it without proof of identity. I told them I do not want to send them my own personal documents/ID for my own safety but they still told me the same thing. Shame I won’t be using this app anymore now that I’ll have to teach myself a language (my ‘native’ language) before teaching someone else 😆 HelloTalk, maybe you can ask people for proof of nationality at the START of the setup to be fair??? Now I guess I’ll delete my current account and make another one with my ‘real’ nationality. 👍🏼 #bitterlol #wasteoftime #dontaskformypersonaldocuments

😶. It’s a really good app and the people on there are kind (excluding people who go on there just to date💀) but I had one problem - I screwed up by setting my account up with the wrong gender but thought I could change it later.. same with learning language. I went to add a language and make my gender the right one but realised I couldn’t 😭 It’s a mistake on my behalf but I wanna change my gender back and keep my account

Great app, made many friends. Honestly yes I do quite like this app! I have met many kind people on here. I have learnt so much about my target languages. By one & only qualm is that you HAVE to declare a gender, & does not give an option for unspecified/other at the very least. Which is unfortunate. So hopefully that is added in the future to be more inclusive. Otherwise, good app.

Only Missing Dark Mode. This app is great and I’ve made long lasting friends but all this needs is a dark/night mode because it’s blinding when using at night time and would be the beat and only feature to add

Backing up messages. It’s a great app but backing up messages has never worked before which is extremely annoying. I’ve backed up my messages many times and deleted the app but it never works. Seems pointless to provide a function that doesn’t work. Otherwise the app is fantastic for language learning :)

It’s good....for the most part.. One thing I lost about this app is that it allowed me to connect to people around the world and learn their languages and cultures. The thing I HATE about this app is that my messages always get deleted for some reason after a while like omg. What’s wrong with this ?

Pretty excellent. Core to my learning.. I’ve found this app to be one of the few utopian places left in the digital spaces. Please, for the love of any supreme being, create a web app so I don’t need to use my phone! I like that there’s a whatsapp style pairing to desktop for chat but that’s super slow and it would be really great to be able to use the other features on desktop as well.

How?. I recently deleted the app by accident and it was linked to an old email account I want to start again but I can’t create a new account on this device as the old account is still active. I also can’t access my old account how do I overcome this problem. HelloTalk response was excellent thanks so much for your help now I can continue using this fantastic app.

Great! But I have a bug. This app is really good for connecting to others and learning a different language. I’ve met many people on here who I now consider my closest friends. The issue is... for the last week or two, the app keeps bugging out and saying I have 10 notifications despite not having anything. Even when I go into the app, it still has the 10 notifications. Please help!

Great app and outstanding customer service. I have used this app for more than 4 years. I decided to buy the lifetime VIP membership and its really worth it. Unlimited translations and lots of languages to switch between eg you can change languages and learn multiple languages at the same time. I think it works best if you are patient and prepared to give something back, as in make regular posts in your language to share so others can learn. Understanding that the beginner you are communicating with may only know a few words or can speak well but cannot write. Learning a language I think is like learning a Musical instrument, it takes regular practice, a good teacher and a chance to perform what you have learnt. Hellotalk gives you the tools to makes this possible and you will meet some great language partners to have regular exchanges. Really great app 10/10

Please delete my user data and account. I have had very poor experience with app since I installed this app. I have been harassed by scammers mostly and now I am told I have been suspended due to providing fake native languages/nationality? This can be only revoked if I provided a video of myself speaking the native languages? I just cannot simply believe an international company would do this on top of the amount of ads bombarding the app page already. Please delete my account.

Hello Talk. I have just joined Hello Talk to learn Mandarin and help people improve their English. It is brilliant! You can make friends with people from all walks of life around the world and leave voice or text messages for each other and respond when you can. This will really help me learn mandarin more quickly. Thank you Hello Talk

Great app!. This is a fantastic app to learn a language from native speakers! While not everyone bothers to answer to you, I have met a few great people who are keen to learn English and are just as helpful when I have questions for them. I set my profile so that I can only be found by women, so haven’t experienced the issues with creepy men that others have had. I haven’t upgraded to VIP yet because the link to HelloSpanish made me want to buy that product first instead! Coupled with a face to face intensive course that I’m doing separately, I’m hopeful that this will take my Spanish to the next level. Well done, developers! 👍🏻

Useless¿. I’m trying to sign up, but it’s telling me that I’m only allowed to register with ONE account! The first account I used to register with this app, has been deleted and I thought if I could make a new one but it won’t let me Help~

Hello talk problems. Generally the function is reasonable, the layout is pretty poor and you can’t see if you have other notifications when chatting or reading posts. You will be monitored when using this app so please take care about that, the developers will block or partiality block you from posting pictures and restrict who see’s what you post.. usually for no reason at all or that someone you refused to talk to reported you. If you are concerned about privacy you should find another app these people collect mac addresses to block people... and IMIE numbers to block devices.. so I rate this at 2 stars for the developers (the coders) minus a million for bad monitoring practices..

Translation. Hello, I really enjoy this app, but I am frustrated that if someone posts a message with even one word in English first, then the rest in their native language, the translation function will not work. If this was fixed it would be a definite 5 star rating.

Pretty cool app! I wish we could have a add video feature. Great app to discover other languages. Hellotalk kind of reminds me of a social media platform at the same time! Great for posting photos however no video feature :(

Amazing!!!. I love this app so much, it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. After having it for only a few days I’ve already having a bunch of conversations with people just like me. I also really like the correction feature, it makes things so much easier, and this whole idea is just brilliant. I’m learning so much already! If you want to practice conversation, this is definitely for you.

Deleted Photo. I have used this app for a couple of days, it’s amazing and you can talk to new people from different countries. My only question is, after I deleted a photo I sent can the other person still see it?

It’s a good app but please helpppp!. Ok so hellotalk is probs my fav app of all time but there is one thing! Ok when I first made my account, I selected the wrong age and now I can’t change it! The same problem has happened to other people sometimes with gender but it’s really annying and I don’t want people thinking I’m a 13 year old, and knowing me for my actual age and for who I really am! So if u could please update the app so people can change their game and gender if they need to. That would be great! It would also make sense if the age would update once our bday comes aswell. (Not sure if it already does tho). But yea that’s it thx!!! ♥️♥️♥️

Learning App Of The Century. Best learning app in the world. I would highly recommend this app. The special part about it is you meet amazing people around the world and form amazing friendships.

Please read.. Hellotalk Developers. This is a great app and certainly the best for a language exchange but please could give the option of showing if your connected or not! (Maybe have a available to chat or not setting). Thankyou

Fantastic app with friendly people. I’ve only used this app a couple days, and it has taught me so many cultures, helped me with my french grammar, and I’ve even learnt some slang! Super helpful, definitely would recommend!!!

Ads. It’s all about ads.. Sure functionality you can communicate with people. But holy moly the amount of ads that and in your feed, messages, notifications, scrolling etc. intrusive in every single way to annoy you so you pay for another subscription service. The user experience is second to profit motives. And it shows. Like I said it functions but there are other alternatives out there to learn another language.

2023 Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB RAM 1GB SSD. Now works unlike the past but crashes when clicking to view a single larger photo using this Ipad App using Apple Silicon on a Mac. I hope that this issue will be fixed because everything else works brilliantly. I have raised my rating from 1 when it didn't work at all to 3 at the moment. I will give it a 5 when the above is fixed. An option to view HT in portrait mode like Duolingo is also recommended.

Great platform. I‘ve been using HT for few years and I find it very helpful tool to give and receive help when learning a new language. But of course the quality of the help depends of the partner you are lucky to find. The process to access photos from a gallery and the synchronization of multiple devices could definitely be improved. I definitely would recommend this app to friends.

Poor safety and reporting issues. No robust and timely mechanism to block repeat stalkers. I’ve had one person create 6+ accounts in a week to stalk me and yet hellotalk does nothing. I’ve reported it twice. No action. Very disappointed. Doesn’t matter if I block one account because they can create 5 other accounts so easily. How can one IP address be allowed to create so many different hellotalk accounts, all 1 or 2 days old only, and harass people freely? Hellotalk doesn’t allow you to write a message about the issue to explain or contact them. The current reporting system is poor. All you can do is attach an image and select a category of the issue from a pick list.

I really like it.. This definitely helps, I met some people and they helped teach their language to me and stuff that I struggled on. I love it but I wish we could post videos. I’ve wanted to post videos of big landscapes and instead of showing half of it on photos which is pretty annoying. Hopefully we can post videos.

Improvements to be made.... I love the app and I’ve been using it for years, but you really need to add a neutral gender option to your profile settings. It’s ignoring the traditional culture of many places where neutral gender identity is ingrained and even sometimes spiritual, and it’s exclusionary for queer culture and non-binary gender identity in the modern world. The app is great, but this is outdated and needs to be changed.

Great and wholesome (if not learning chinese 😂). It's a really well-made app and the community there is AMAZING. I havent had any phishers or thirsty people so far, and I've been learning heaps, even as someone learning Japanese in uni! There are so many functions that are so useful like translate, correction, voice msgs, etc. Only problems: mod response was kinda slow, my friend who's learning Chinese is only getting really thirsty men who want an English wife for permanent residency 😂 and also just a tiny amount of really small bugs, but compared to how good this app is, this app is totally worth it. 10/10 get it guys.

Useful app, however.... I have no idea why, but as soon as I decided to temporarily switch my target language to Spanish; I have so many men treating me as a potential romantic or sexual partner. It is nothing short of annoying and disturbing to be called “precious”, as I was once, by a complete stranger and even have someone get jealous, passively aggressively claiming, “must be your boyfriend,” or something, after I decided not to reply to their last texts. I should not have to explain my dating status to anyone, especially because this is meant to be a place for language exchange and nothing else more. You need to track down people who are just trying to hook up with foreigners regularly and get rid of them. I just want to better learn a language, not talk about relationships.

Disappointed. I used to love this app. I was able to connect with people from all over the world and share my love of language. I am disappointed in the way they assumed my identity and native language, changed my profile without consulting me and then alluded to the fact that I wasn’t of my registered nationality. Now the app settings have changed for me and I’m not able to benefit as I was before and I have to justify who I am ? I understand they may be trying to screen to ensure only ‘qualified’ people can teach a ‘native language’, but there are more professional and respectful ways to do so.

.... It’s great great app but i still have trouble logging into my old account and i’m not able to create new one.

Nice to Meet People but disappointed with customer service. I’ve made friends through this app. I’ve had issues with the technical responses, they just tell you what to do, no customer service. I got banned from the Voice Room for responding to a prohibited topic. The other person did not get banned and he asked me about a sexual topic and I responded.

Good BUT. Premium members should be able to add more that 3 languages that they’re learning. I am learning more and the reason I am not a premium member is because I can’t add all of the languages I am learning without having to change one. Just a suggestion. :)

It’s fabulous. I really love this app. It provides a fantastic opportunity to meet people world wide and practice your chosen learning language with native speakers. As with all online experiences at times interactions can be mixed, but with time it becomes easy to work out how to interact safely and find people with a focus on learning language at a similar level.

Messages scrambled. The app is great but all my messages are being scrambled so when it’s been a while since I had spoken to the person I get confused on what messages are new or old and sometimes it’s all my messages or all their messages.

Great app for meeting people. I have used this app for a long time, I have made many friends and improved languages a lot by using it. My 1 star is for the recent implementation and spruiking of paid practice. It’s constantly asking if I want to pay someone to practice, it’s annoying and working more as a deterrent than an incentive to use the app. Plus on my one or two scrolls through the people requesting paid practice, not one of them appears to be a teacher or anyone of any value to improving the learning experience. I get these apps want to make more money, but this paid practice is just stupid. Implement it sure, but stop asking users if they want to pay, one and done is enough to ask.

PLEASE ADD A DARK THEME OR NIGHT MODE. PLEASE ADD A DARK THEME OR NIGHT MODE Love this for finding people to connect with!! The free learning time is not enough to make any kind of difference. With the new price jump for VIP, they cut back the free learning time from 5 minutes per day to 3 minutes per day. Even if you get the HelloWords app, you still only get 3 minutes total per day, and a lot of the good stuff is locked behind VIP. Also, the 5 free translations per day could be upgraded to 6, I’m sure all users would appreciate that.

Used to be great. Great app but now when I go into the app it asks for a phone number which I can’t use and now I can’t use the app anymore

Worst customer service ever !!. This app just has the world most worst customer service ever, these guys just bait you to use services but never support you whenever you have any genuine issues with regards to the app !

only one account. I can’t make another account once i deleted my acc

wont let me create a new account 😡. my cousins were using my phone and ended up creating and deleting multiple new hellotalk accounts, including mine. now when i try to make a new one they wont let me because of this issue. i contacted support to see if they could reactivate my account but they refused. useless. i actually liked using this app but your customer service needs to be way better.

The app likes a spy from china?. You can't log in normal email with same phone, you can't say or private conversation with users, there are much rules from monitoring networks. I want report it, where can do it due to rude way to users.

90% Fake User Profiles. I paid the subscription and there are scam profiles asks for money. Sucks 👎🏻

Very good. This app is very good but I don’t like how you can only use translate a few times without paying.

I paid for my Vip and i got scammed!. My brother has created an account from his phone and hellotalk deleted his account because he violated the rules. But guess what? They blocked my phone too which i wasn’t involved and i have an active account subscription. I have contacted them mentioning that you should block the device he created the account not my device which I’m not guilty but they said sorry the removed device can’t be restored! There is no justice at all, poor customer service. Don’t waste your time downloading this app, they will never treat you professionally.

Worst customer service. I deleted my account because I was getting unwanted messages from strangers. I told the hello talk team about this and they did not even try to help me. This app has horrible customer service and they do not care about the people who use it. The app itself has many creeps so I’d advise not to use it.

To Spammy and confusing. To many ads to the point where I’d rather uninstall rather than pay. Don’t get me wrong you need money to run your devs but this is ridiculous. You even get spammed to join groups and various other functions the app offers without cease. It’s also EXTREMELY hard to navigate. Try listening to your users HelloTalk.

Terrible management. It sucks indeed. Stupid management

My account doesn’t work. Something happened to my account and it erased all my messages, it also changed my nationality as well as the language I knew, it changed it from English to Arabic.

Great but.... Great app, but one thing really annoys me. You can't login to your account at same time from multiple devices. And when you switch from one device to another, the chat history only shows on the device that you had those conversation on. Please fix this.

Not what it used to be. I used this app a lot back in 2017-2019 and I met so many great friends in person with whom I could not only practice language but hangout with. It was like the dating apps but to make friends and practice language instead. I downloaded it again after years, excited to get back to it and I find I have to pay to see the people in my area that use the app? RIDICULOUS. An unnecessary cash grab. Put ads instead, or offer other content to pay for. But literally the main reason this app was great was that it connected you with those in your city that were learning language like you.

Dark Theme Please. We need it!!!

language lock. was fine until one day it automatically changed my naitive language to chinese even though i don’t speak it. the app is useless now

I don’t know what’s wrong. I’ve sent messages to people, I get notifications that they sent a message back but when I go to all the messages it doesn’t show. But the blue button that signifies there’s a message is there, but I’m still unable to see the messages. It sucks.

Fraud. I’ve been using this for more than a year and one day they stopped me from sending messages claiming that account is suspended for fake identity. Provided my license for identity and for some reason they’re asking for my passport to prove my identity which doesn’t make any sense at all. This is an educational app and proved by email not by passport or ID

Straightforward and effective. I like the various features of translating texts, voice messages, and correction features.

Hard to navigate. Too many bugs, could not register for a trial group class. encountered other issues as well. I’m native English, yet stories read to me in English!

Disappointed.. I am a native English speaker trying to learn Cebuano. It keeps teaching me English instead of Cebuano. I signed up to learn a new language, not one I already speak. I didn't sign up just for this crap to happen. 👎

Changing language option doesnt work. When i change language i want to learn to simplified chinese, i dont get any users. When asking hellotalk support for help they didnt provide me any answers. I really like this app but some languages dont work

Scamm. This app need to change the purpose to how we can steal more money from you

Beware buying anything from them. They will ban you for any fake reason because their report system is completely flawed. If someone doesn’t like you they can report you and you will be immediately banned without given your accuser or evidence provided. It doesn’t matter if you are a vip subscriber or permanent vip user, you will still be banned without reason. If you host a room and then someone makes an offensive comment or in my case made a “sexual sound” while on stage, the host gets banned automatically. How is that fair? They will not provide you with the proof of the sound for the ban, even when you email their support. I’ve already emailed them and they only replied with one sentence: “you made a sexual sound in your voice room”. It was a straight up lie. My friend was banned for the same reason when she didn’t do anything like that. BUYER BEWARE, they will ban you even if you have vip or god forbid, permanent vip. On the App Store, all the positive reviews are from a time when they were not shadow banning people for no real evidence or reason. Just take a look at any recent reviews. Now they just treat you like a money bag. They will give you same old response, email out support team but I’ve already done that and it’s gone nowhere. They also take forever to respond, even with their live in-app chat. I’m so disappointed in where this app team has headed, I’ve been their active member for FIVE YEARS. I’ve met many friends through this app but I’m sad to say that I don’t recommend new users to this app.

Bad support. I will delete the app and will never go back again. I recommend you guy to never purchase VIP in this app. Their promise you but they don’t do what they promised. Second of all, the same thing happened with me maybe 10 times. A f Saudi guy or girl text me, they start swearing, and when I respond, they HT support blocks me and leave them. I reported so many accounts but they never banned them. Check out my account and see “adamatasi”. This is the worst app ever. I’m switching to another app.

Random charge. Why was I charged $112 for a $8.33 per month subscription? I’ve reached out to the HelloTalk team and no one responded…

Unable to upload pic from phone for avatar. Loving the app so far for language learning. My problem is that I can’t seem to upload picture from my phone to use as my avatar and I was forced to take a live shot. Can someone fix this? When I clicked on “upload from Album” all I got is a blank page with “Album” on top.

Hateful and bigoted app. Very transphobic and racist app. Avoid at all costs

Not non-binary friendly. Looking like a great app, really nice intros and intuitive controls. However, you have to provide either male or female as a gender, you cannot change it and it will display in your profile. A fair warning to other non-binary folks out there!

I cant make an account. i downloaded the app and made an account months ago. because i didn’t use the acc much i deleted it. now when i tried to make an account it said i can make 1 hellotalk account per device. i deleted my account so it shouldn’t exist, i should be able to make a new acc.

My account got deleted for a ridiculous reason. I recently downloaded the app hoping to learn some languages. However as soon as I got an account I had quite a few males starting to message me, asking me inappropriate questions. I didn’t want to make a big deal of out the unpleasant conversations so I decided to not reply to the messages and just went ahead to use the language learning materials. Next thing you know, I got a message saying they were going to delete my account for fake identity?!?!!! I wrote to dispute and haven’t heard back from the Hello Talk. Hello talk was an extremely Horrible experience for me.

Crashes. Crashes every time I open a chat window - great update guys (sarcasm)

Account policy changed, what?. I find it ridiculous how they change the account policy from five accounts per device to know just one. It’s frustrating. Even if you delete your account your device is saved in the database. Try a different language exchange app or website. It’s not worth your time

Very terrible experience. I deleted my account because some fake accounts reported me so I can not sign a new account.

Paying?. Paying for a TRANSLATION?

Paid $170 for a course which stopped working. I paid around $170 for a course on HelloTalk, but the course stopped working. I messages HelloTalk 3 TIMES to get it fixed or get a refund, and they never responded. Don’t use this app.

banning. I would give zero if I could. They will shadow-ban you if you attract alot of interactions. The shadiest thing is you won’t notice it until you try to sign out or create a new account. Avoid this garbage.

community is not good. hellotalk is like sns for languages. most people on that platform are not committed to language learning and will ignore messages.

Asking refund. I punched the wrong button and I bought a 12months subscription accidentally. Can I please get a refund?

Please consider more VIP rate options. If there’s more choice on how to pay for VIP Could be weekly, cheaper monthly, 3months/6months.. tbh, who wants to invest $99 one time when they’re not even sure how much they going to get from the app.

In vexed. Can’t make a new acc or login because I removed my Apple ID please help

This app is SO BAD. I had this app on and off for a while. There are so many issues with it… First of all, they don’t have an age restriction so if you’re a woman, be prepared to get a ton of notifications from creepy old men. Another issue is that they have a restriction on the amount of people you can block per day.. so you can’t block all the men (and scammers) who message you. Also, they let just anyone follow you or comment on your posts.. Once again, this is a major issue because I am EIGHTEEN and I had 30+ men follow me, message me, and like and comment on my posts. It makes the entire experience on the app very uncomfortable. Also, there is no account verification so often times you have catfishes on the app trying to get something out of talking with you. I had an experience where a “woman” messaged me in an attempt to “befriend” me to use my information in order to catfish other men. Not only that, but the app doesn’t remove your profile permanently from their database when you delete your account. I realized this when I re-downloaded the app and they didn’t let me make another account because of the previous accounts I have unregistered from. They said to contact their email address with my account’s ID. However, if my account was removed why would my ID still exist? It should have been erased along with the profile itself. Also, when you contact their email address they don’t actually help you. I noticed all of the negative reviews on this app have the same response saying “we will help you register and get you back to practicing your favourite language!” But when you email them explaining your problem they reply with “we will NOT be helping you with another registration”… If the app tells its users to contact your email address because we can’t make a new account due to previous registrations, maybe you should change that… The app is just overall unsafe, and their “customer service” is absolute trash 💀

Voice chat to short. Developers, can you make it so I can talk longer in voice room for free pls like 3 to 4 hours because I can’t afford the VIP.

I want to cancel vip. I want to change my account From vip to no vip

The best app to learn languages and meet amazing people. The best app to learn languages and meet amazing people

NOT Safe for women. Do not download this application. I was on the application for over a year until I got harassed and Hellotalk took no actions to find who was using my picture. The perpetrator impersonated me and also put some naked picture of me with new profiles being created along with threats, a lot of my friends on the application also got threatened and had to leave the application because of threats. HelloTalk doesn’t take complaints of identity theft and harassment seriously. I expected better service for an application I paid for. I paid a year vip and I deeply regret it now. Do not download this application. Not safe for women at all

Worst customer service - beyond subpar.. When I write to customer service with issues and questions, they almost never give an answer, or answers, to the question(s) I ask. Even if I ask a “yes or no” question, customer service never provides a “yes” or “no” answer. They can’t even resolve a programming bug which sends me notifications every Friday at 8:50 PM. They also can’t even solve the bug of my account randomly following other accounts.

Don’t purchase their VIP. I purchased for their annual VIP service, I only used it for valid 2months then my account got frozen for NO REASON. I emailed them a couple of times but never get their response by email. It’s a scam app! Watch out!

Overall. I am obsessed with this app but there’s something I wish that didn’t happen! People can randomly add you to your text. Like there’s no I accept this person’s request type thing! But I am very happy with the teachers out there! I really want to learn French and I learned a lot threw this app! I help people learn English too so it’s a win-win! I recommend it but, you just have to find the right teacher or it isn’t a good experience. The audio in french they do isn’t that good but I just ask people on posting anyone willing to help me learn French? I can help you learn English in return! So many people respond and so many people are willing to help! Also there’s a built in translator to see what people say in a language you don’t know. Sadly it costs money along with all the other good stuff! GET IT!

I WANT to like this, but the battery drain is insane!. I’ve been using Tandem for some time, and there is so much about this HelloTalk app that I prefer. The UI is a bit nicer in my opinion, and a bit more intuitive to navigate. More importantly, the social media posts aspect is something that Tandem doesn’t have at all. It’s a nice way to engage with other users more casually, or to find things to talk about in direct message chats. HOWEVER, I had to remove this app and go back to Tandem. As nice as this app may be, its drain on your battery is just insane! It cut my battery life in less than half. If you Google for it, then you’ll find that this has been a problem for years. Either they don’t want to fix it, or can’t. If they ever fix the battery drain problem, then this app would be 5 stars and a recommendation for the paid plan. However, in its current state I can’t recommend installing it at all.

Great App. This app has helped me so much with my speaking and comprehension of Spanish! It's definitely my favorite for practicing listening/pronunciation, especially since many other vocabulary/grammar based language apps don't focus on conversational skills as much. The community on here is wonderful as well. I've met so many lovely people, and everyone is incredibly helpful and encouraging with learning languages. While I use this app mostly for Spanish, there's a very active community for several other languages too (I've mostly seen Arabic, Japanese, German, Italian, French, Indonesian, Russian, Portuguese, Hindi, and Turkish). Regardless of what language you're learning, I definitely recommend this app!!

Too much to pay for.. I like this app also how you can meet someone and learn together but the worst thing about this app is how you almost have to pay for everything like if you wanna text someone you have a limit on how many people to text which isn’t fair and also on translation you have to pay which doesn’t make sense at all because it’s basically the reason that it helps you learn and how are you supposed to know what language their talking about? Also you have to pay to see who views your profile which I kinda understand but if you wanna find the gender you want to be partnered up with you also have to pay which doesn’t make sense either but other that you shouldn’t everything costs money.

Incredible Features!. I’ve been using HelloTalk for a few years. I usually just post a few language questions, wait for them to get answered, take some notes and call it a day. Well, I haven’t used it in several months if not a year, and I started using it again and discovered the Live Voice feature! This is new for me. It’s so much better than messaging!! I actually get to practice SPEAKING my target language with actual native speakers. I don’t have to struggle searching for someone to actually SPEAK with. They’re all in a Live Voice room waiting to be spoken with! So convenient! I’ve always liked this app as a study tool. But now I think I absolutely love it!

So worth it. First of all I want to say thank you so much to the hello talk developers. I have been using this app for around 6 years now, from middle school to my last year in college, nave met numerous people through it online and in person, learned much more spanish, more about culture, got to connect with new people, and help others learn English. HelloTalk has been a strong part of the social development of my life and becoming more confident with myself and others. I can never thank the developers enough for the joy and many lessons this app has given me. Thank you so much for creating the app that allowed me and so many others to have such an incredible opportunity. I appreciate it so much.

Bad experience as a Hispanic female!. I downloaded HelloTalk to learn languages. I was a VIP member and enjoyed a lot of the futures. HelloTalk is a good app to learn and practice languages. However, I know they can’t control the amount of people that are treating it as a dating app. I experienced harassment in several occasions. I am a Latin American woman and my profile picture was modest, but for some reason most of the men who wanted to interact with me often made comments on my appearance, wanted to flirt and thought that they had the right to do so because of my ethnicity. I narrowed down the search to just women but didn’t have any luck finding language partners. I also blocked several people for inappropriate comments. I stayed on the app for six months and my anxiety levels increased more than my language proficiency skills and for that reason I deled my account. This was my personal experience, I hope others have better experiences.

Night Mode, Bugginess. I’d really like to be able to turn read receipts off, or barring that, a night mode. My pals are all +13 hours ahead of me, and I’m often talking with them late into the night. It really hurts my eyes! Please work on this. Furthermore the app itself is very buggy. If I get a notification that I got a text, the text itself won’t show up. I can’t see it until I send one or something along those lines which makes for very awkward conversations. They just disappear. I can’t see who texted me when I’m in a conversation, and sometimes they even go overlooked because I can’t find them at all! The app also freezes. It’s gotten really bad 😞 and the message notifications on web and your phone don’t really sync up/go away. The keyboards are also starting to glitch and it’s nearly impossible to type

Chinese App - Know the risks. With TikTok and Wechat in President Trump’s crosshairs it should come as no surprise that HelloTalk is an extension of the Communist Party of China’s propaganda campaign. If you want to get a quick perma-ban from the app then just repost any article from a credible US news outlet about the Uyghur camps in Xinjiang province, democracy in Hong Kong, or the human rights abuses in North Korea. It would be fine if the app was apolitical, but other users will post the most ridiculous anti-American articles without consequences from the app team. Also, the app has been out for four-plus years and still has bugs with regards to message load data, cache storage, audio calls, and video calls. Additionally the latest update (September 2020) has monetized the only useful features behind a pay wall. Hopefully the additional revenue will allow then to pay for a better debugging team. Finally, keep in mind that this app could, and likely is, gathering more data about you for the Chinese.

Banned For No Reason. I was banned for no reason. I used this app a lot a couple years ago, and then I kinda forgot about it. Recently I redownloaded it and it kept saying I was banned, and wouldn’t even say why. I emailed and apparently it was because my profile picture was inappropriate. The people I emailed proceeded to send a very obviously AI generated boob that I SUPPOSEDLY set as my profile picture. I’ve NEVER EVER set my profile picture up to be anything other than my own face or a cute avatar, so I’m not happy. I wanted to redownload this app to continue doing language exchanges with new friends, but instead I was banned for no reason because of something I didn’t do. I don’t know if I got hacked or something in the 3-4 years I stopped using this app, but I’m VERY UPSET and even if I get unbanned I don’t know if I’ll ever redownload this app ever again in this life. I understand you guys have to be strict and keep the app safe, but it’s not fair. I really liked this app, now I don’t.

Great app but comes with awkwardness for women. HelloTalk is an awesome language exchange app— the voice messaging, transliteration & translation features are awesome. I’ve been able to make friends and really improve my speaking and listening skills by using this app. However, I’d really like to see an option to filter who can message you by native language, or even just an option to only allow messages from people you follow. So for example, I am on the app to learn Japanese, so I only want to speak to Japanese speakers. But basically once a day I get a message from random non-Japanese speaking men being like “hello beautiful.. can we chat...” who are obviously just treating the app like a dating app. Nearly every single woman I follow on the app has a “This is not a dating app!” or “I am married! Please don’t flirt” clause in their profile because of how rampant this problem is.

GREAT APP!! but watch out!. i love this app, honestly. i’ve met so many great people on there and i think anyone who wants foreign friends or wants to learn a new language should get this app. BUT! if you meet someone on her who goes by the name “Seung”, put their profile picture through google search. my friend was talking to this dude by this name Seung, but he randomly got banned. then today, i was talking to a guy named Seung and he was trying to scam me! i asked my friend to send me a picture of her guy and it was the same person in their profile picture so i was like “it’s the same guy”. then after talking to this dude for like half an hour (i was purposely irritating him because he was very obviously trying to scam me), i decided to google search his profile picture and what do you know, it’s a japanese actor name yutaro. “Seung” was claiming to be korean. he also said his profile picture was him so that’s obviously him lying. sorry for ranting, everyone, but be careful with this man. i don’t know what he actually looks like, or what his actual age is, but he was on here talking to children who can be anywhere from 8-17 years old.

Maybe I’m not using it correctly?. This is basically international Ok Cupid. I don’t know how to turn off the chat and I thought it would be fun to talk to people from around the globe to learn a new language. Right away, people want your phone number or tell you how pretty you are. I put on my profile and it’s the first thing you read “wife and mom”. It’s like that doesn’t matter and I have an inbox full of guys trying to talk to me. No women what so ever. I can’t sit here and talk to men from around the globe all day. This app is clearly for singles trying to learn a language. If that’s your thing- go for it. Lots of people looking for that I suppose. But if you’re in a serious relationship or have a family, might as well look for something else. Otherwise- it’s pretty cool. People will message you in another language and the app translates what they say and it speaks the message for you verbally.

Don’t buy VIP. Unfair treatment. I had a bunch of positive language related posts on my profile looking for help. One day I logged on and found out I was shadow banned. I asked HelloTalk why and they said that someone reported my posts. I told HelloTalk to look at my posts to see that I didn’t do anything wrong. But HelloTalk wasn’t interested in reviewing my profile. So basically anyone can report your posts for no reason and HelloTalk will take their word for it and shadow ban you. I asked for my money back but they never gave it back. They speak and respond to you nicely if you give them a one star in the App Store to make the public seem like they’re on your side. But through email, they’ll talk to you aggressively and dismissive. Don’t buy vip because you’ll get shadow if someone randomly reports your posts even if it’s positive. HelloTalk VIP is a scam and doesn’t give refunds. So I’ll be going to another application that won’t shadow ban me for posting language related statuses.

Nearly every feature is behind a pay wall. Unfortunately it’s really hard to test the app. There is a pop up every few minutes asking you to upgrade to something or download another app they make. I spend lots of the money in the App Store and don’t mind paying for apps. However this one feels too pushy before I even know if I like it. Currently I am deleting the app and exploring what other options are available Developers: may I suggest full access for 14 days by default. Then features go away and you can offer the upgrades. I saw the offer for three days after rejecting 10+ pop ups but I don’t trust you guys enough to know if this behavior will continue with ever more increasing upgrades. You ask for money before I really know what I am paying for. Since much of the value lays in how others use the app, I would prefer to see how much interaction there really is. Plus it takes more than 3 days to learn the features and navigate the app.

Sexualizing women. I used to love this app. I’m not able to use is as much as I love it since I work but latelyI’ve come back to it. I haven’t deleted ir cause I have many friends here that I love dearly but that’s not the point. Lately when I change my profile picture it flags me and sends me a message that it’s inappropriate. I’ve had to complain twice now for my picture since they always mark them as inappropriate if I’m using off the shoulder, strapless tops or even just spaghetti straps. Most of the pictures I’ve put, despite me having my breast covered it’s flagged as “ inappropriate “ Now, I under there’s are things that might be too much. But I consider my pictures are usually not it. I shouldn’t be having to complain everytime I put up a picture just because I have breast and am a Women. because that’s the o my thing I can honestly think of right now as I’ m usually pretty much covered and I’ve seen other girls wearing things close to what I’ve wear in those pictures.

Do Not Download. I was hosting voice chats that were very educational and helpful. In fact I had well over 1300 followers in a matter of one month. Helping people with the English language was my priority. One person asked me about a bad word. And I advised him not to use that word and I explained what it meant. I consistently reminded both the listeners and participants to not use this word. Someone got offended and reported me. The following day I received a notification stating that my account has been suspended for three days and that I am no longer permitted to make voice chats. This is a true disappointment. If you notice, HelloTalk is constantly advising people to message them in the app. There is a reason for this. That reason is that they do not want potential customers to see how things really are. Truly, download another app. I will ignore what the developer says to me here because I know it’s simply not true.

Suspicious app. TL;DR: This app forces user to enter their phone number AFTER personal information is collected. The app collects your personal information (photo, age, gender, nationality, location, and etc.) when you sign up, and after you replied to someone in the forum, the verification window pops up. Then the app stuck on the pop-up window, allowing you to do absolutely nothing in the app, including deleting the account. Now the app has all your personal info and you cannot even ask them to remove it. Opinions may vary, but I am very uncomfortable with this. I am perfectly fine if asked to enter my number when creating an account, which would be a better option if the app wants to collect data. At the very least, I should have the right to make decisions in regards of my privacy. This perplexed me, since this app has been here for a decades, and there is such a huge flaw in the design.

Frustrated. Hi, This app is absolutely excellent. It can be addicting (especially due to the news feed-like feature), which is why I like to intermittently delete the app, just to prevent addiction-like behavior, because I have serious demands to attend to outside of language learning and I can't afford that. But two things absolutely ruin this app for me. 1) When I delete the app, I lose pretty much ALL my direct messages, except the default ones and like one other random one that I received from some person 20 minutes before re-signing in. I have absolutely no way to get them back. That is extremely frustrating. I've seen someone else mention this problem within the app after having to delete the app for some reason, so it's probably not just my phone acting up. 2) Almost as frustrating of a problem is the fact that my messages are clearly not saved to any sort of cloud database, because they never show up if I log in using my iPad. This is quite odd and very problematic. It really should sync to some cloud database. Please fix these problems and you guys easily get a five star in my book, because besides those two very serious problems, I cannot deny that this is an absolutely excellent app for language learning. Thank you!

Government Propaganda. This app is an environment in which you can talk to people all around the world, without any nerve-wracking barriers of cold introductions. There is so much potential to have very real interactions with so many wonderful people, and the app itself is quite well-designed. The fatal flaw in this app is that it also serves as a platform for Chinese government propaganda. I make no allegation as to whether or not this is intentional or unintentional. The platform specifically bans political speech in its user guidelines, but there are accounts that do nothing but repost links to Chinese government-affiliated news networks such as CGTN, seemingly without repercussion. These accounts are proactively anti-American and pro-Chinese government. The company itself, according to their website, is based out of Shenzhen, China. All in all, the app provides the services they promise, and is quite good at it. But there is a political angle that is vociferously exploited through this application, and for that, I must recommend that one avoids this app.

Using for friends. HelloTalk is fun. I already speak a second language, so I’m not able to review any of the language practice features. I mainly use HelloTalk to connect with native speakers of my second language locally using the “search nearby” feature. It’s not a common language, so HelloTalk is nice. I have made a couple friends. However, the “search nearby” feature is a paid feature, and it’s quite expensive for what is included. Especially since there is no way to know how many people are nearby until you pay over $100 USD. It is also hit or miss because, like any app, there’s the potential your partner won’t respond or will only want to speak the language they’re learning. Additionally, HelloTalk really should introduce some sort of ID verification process like a lot of other similar apps have done. There are scam artists on HelloTalk using fake photos which could easily be avoided by adding an option for users to verify themselves like any other app that connects strangers. Overall, a useful app for second language speakers who want to connect and practice with native speakers. But still has a lot of avenues to improve.

Garbage. Had my account suspended from sending messages to anybody because my “Nationality and Native Language do not match”. I explained to the HelloTalk Team through the app why my nationality and native language were different and they repeatedly started asking me to send a video selfie of myself as well as ID information that shows my full name, birthday, as well as my nationality. I didn’t feel comfortable sending this information so in the end I deleted my account so I could make a new one, and when I tried to make a new account I was completely banned. They wanted me to email the HelloTalk Team regarding any issues but I don’t want to do that because even if I made a new account and put the same information as last time (which is 100% true about myself) I feel that the same thing will happen again. So in the end although the app was great, but because of this one occurrence I’m gonna have to rate it a 1 star. 👎👎👎

Bugs Need Fixing. Please this is an amazing app but the bugs needs fixing!!!!!!!! Keeps blacking out, bringing me back to my Home Screen, glitching, replaying audios etc. The concept of sending audios to practice speaking is amazing. I love that they keep the audios at a maximum of one minute because it gets hard understand to a foreign language for more than that. And you can replay the audio multiple times to understand. There are kind people who will answer and want to practice with you and want to learn your native language. I love how you can adjust the “Who Can Find You” settings so you don’t get creepy older men trying to call you before you even had a conversation. This makes me feel comfortable and safe on the app.

Correcting each other’s speech is easy and so helpful!. I am learning Spanish, and this app has been very helpful. I don’t know if it’s the same for people learning other languages, but for me I have more conversation partners than I can keep up with! I get messages from several new people every day. My only wish is that the app had an option to “pause” on finding new people. Maybe it does and I haven’t found it yet. Each person can correct their conversation partner’s messages (for grammar, word choice, etc.), and the app formats the corrections nicely so they’re easy to understand. Also, the corrections are formatted differently than the rest of the conversation, so making a correction doesn’t disrupt the flow of the conversation too much.

Poor Customer Service Deserves 1 Star. I'm extremely disappointed with this app's functionality. It doesn't allow users to change the area representing themselves, and I mistakenly chose the wrong one. This has caused me significant inconvenience every time I need to explain that I live in a different country and speak a different language. The customer service has a consistently cocky attitude, making the experience even more unpleasant. They ask for sensitive documents and take forever to reply to messages. What's even more frustrating is that there's no identification or name displayed during the chat, leaving me clueless about who I'm communicating with. This entire ordeal has significantly impacted my mood, and I certainly won't be wasting my money on any VIP features. My advice: don't waste your money on this app. The poor user experience and unhelpful customer service make it an absolute letdown.

Great App! With little fixes it could be better. I love this app I’ve met a few Spanish speakers and at the moment I San working on learning Spanish. It’s helpful to learn a few more things that other apps can’t teach you since you are talking to another person. However you could probably do something to make it easier to learn languages if you don’t know any of it. Like have better lessons that actually explain what the words mean and make sure you become a master at the words. There is a section for that but it is very confusing. Also I hate the fact that you only have a certain amount of translations where people just learning to speak the language will have a VERY difficult time. Why make you pay for it?

I can’t get my account back. For no reason my account got suspended for suspicious activity? And I’m not clear as to why. They said the only way to unsuspend my account is to send some identification document but I don’t feel safe giving them all my personal information. I tried reaching out but no response. I guess I’ll have to make a new account... Update: I deleted my account but it won’t even let me log in with a new account on my phone. There’s nothing else to do accept delete it and find a different app. Second update: I tried researching more online but it seems like once you have a device ban it is impossible to ever use the app ever again even if you get a new phone. I’m glad they take security seriously but it is banning perfectly safe members from ever using this app again and I’m very sad that there is absolutely nothing I can do to fix this and be able to use hellotalk 😒

It’s Great But One thing…. I installed this to learn Korean. And I have enjoyed talking to people they’re very sweet, but one thing I don’t like is how everything is very pricey and comes with a membership. Want to play games and learn? Pay. Want to read? Pay. Want to see your profile visits? Pay. It’s extremely limited for people who choose to not pay. Granted, I wouldn’t mind paying for a monthly membership that gives EVERYTHING. Not having to subscribe to multiple things at once just to unlock everything I would want to use. And really? Only 5 translations a day it says… This is an app made to communicate with people that don’t speak your language fluently, so why are we limited on translations? That just enforces the language barrier even more… please fix these issues…

Really useful. I’ve improved my Japanese in such little time with this app. It forced me to refer to a dictionary back n forth until I memorized a certain kanji/adjective/noun etc. I was already kind of okay with my Japanese, but that’s only my formal, but I’m awful at casual Japanese. The community is suprisingly non-toxic and very welcoming! I originally gave with four stars when I initially opened this app, but I think it’s fair to give it a solid five stars now (even if it’s only been 2 days since using this app). Bugs are the only issue I have, but they are very minuscule and never really occur. This is a good app overall, with a strong community. I would recommend to anyone who’s interested in learning foreign languages.

This app is pretty great!!. I would have given it 4.5/5 stars but i don’t know how to do that so I put 4 instead. This app is great. It connects you to a bunch of people really quickly based on your native language and language of interest. You as the user have to be cautious with giving out personal info, but the app doesn’t require location, just age. I’ve been using it for a month or two now and connected with a really nice person and we’re both learning pretty fast with how you are kind of forced to learn sentence structure and grammar if you are going to talk to each other. The only reason it’s a 4.5/5 for me is I wish it had a dark mode so the light isn’t shining in my face so much, case my “pen pal” is in Japan so it’s always nighttime for me when I talk to him. Overall though, really good(and you don’t have to pay to have a good experience)

If you’re serious about learning another language, you need to download this now.. What a great time to be alive. Just 10 years ago we did not have the luxury to have conversations in different languages with such ease. Of course this was possible by using chats on computers, but good luck finding one that was dependable and not full of creepers. That’s not to say this app is 100%, one must always exercise caution. Never give out personal info like your address, financial info, etc. to others. As long as you are careful, this app is absolutely amazing. The community is extremely helpful in teaching and correcting errors in a friendly, educational manner. I used this free app for a day and knew I needed the full option and upgraded to the yearly package. No regrets at all.

The best language app by far. I love HelloTalk. Huge community of free tutors who are trying to learn my native language while I’m trying to learn theirs. What a brilliant idea! Its robust chatting software is also great to stay connected with friends and make new ones. I like the latest update on group activities that mimics a classroom setting and the cost is totally affordable such as a group cooking lesson with only 3 participants, it’s almost a private lesson. Last but not least, the search feature can rival any dating app. Not that I’m single nor available, it’s truly the best way to make new friends while stay connected with the old ones. Give it a shot. You can’t go wrong!

Hello Scam!. The only reason I would give this app one star is because I can't give it a zero. I taught ESL for 20 years until COVID. My account was suspended for no reason and when I asked why, they wouldn't answer and demanded I send a photo of my passport to unlock my account. After reading reviews, it seems that this is a common practice from the admins at Hello Talk. The app is rampant with accounts trying to scam you, and it appears that the admins at Hello Talk are complicit, they block legitimate accounts and try to get you to send photos of your ID... Makes you wonder what they're doing with your information. If you use this app, be very careful about what you post. Update: As you can see from the developer's response, Hello Talk not only does not investigate and reprimand employees for unethical behavior that could compromise your identity, they condone it! If you are considering downloading this app, I recommend using a different language learning platform. There are many, far superior apps for language learning. If you're currently using this app, be very careful what you post and what information you provide. One can only conclude that Hello Talk is a platform for identity theft disguised as a language learning app. But don't take my word for it, read the many, many similar complaints from other users below. Whatever you choose, PROTECT YOURSELF!

it’s great concept but it still needs work.... this app only allows you to be signed in to one device at a time, and your chat history does not transfer over even if you back it up. so if a conversation starts while i’m using my ipad, it stays on my ipad and won’t be in my messages when i sign into my phone. the conversation won’t show up until the other person replies and it’s only from those messages on. it’s really frustrating and i wish they’d make the transition seamless. if they fixed just that alone i’d bump up my rating. i’ve been on this app since 2016 and unfortunately there are still quite a few bugs that need to be fixed and features that should be improved. you can meet people and practice your language learning but the chats are often delayed or get deleted completely. i use it everyday so i bought the vip subscription but i don’t have anymore exposure than before, and i probably get less interactions on my memories altogether... that’s really frustrating because i cannot always get answers as soon as i’d like, but it is what it is i guess. i haven’t tried any of the learning courses so i can’t comment on that, but all in all i’ve recommended this app to a few people i know personally.

HelloTalk. This App is a wonderful place to meet people around the world who you probably never would otherwise... It’s a place to simply be able to look into and value different cultures, a place where friendships, respect, and growth can occur between different races who take the time to appreciate such a gift.. We are able to look to help eachother learn new language and ideas, while discovering new aspects of ourselves that probably would be overlooked if it wasn’t explored and held up by the light of other cultures who seem to have a way of expressing that aspect naturally, and vis-versa... I defiantly recommend this app, and hope you make beautiful friendships that’s geared in a new wonderful growth...

Hello Talk Violating My Pivacy. About a month ago, a cyber bully reported that I was fake after sending rude comments under my posts multiple times. Due to this, I was unable to post or comment anything. I emailed HelloTalk and they asked for proof, which is personal information I usually won’t give but I understood. I also felt I could somewhat feel that HelloTalk would be a credible app. However, after sending around 7 nonsense emails requiring more proof back and forth, mind you, I showed proof that I’m not fake by showing my schools irs that also shows my full name and how I’m a Texas resident. Then, I just received how “I’m sorry we cannot restore your account” AFTER getting all my personal information because the picture had all of that. It made me mad and upset of wasting my time over a month having this back and forth nonsense conversation only to say no with all the proof I’ve sent? I wouldn’t be upset if they just straight up said no, you cannot use HelloTalk anymore because a bully reported that I’m fake.???

love this app! a couple notes?. hi hellotalk! :) let me just say first that i have been using this app for YEARS. even when i lose motivation and take breaks from language study, i ALWAYS come back to HelloTalk because it is such a useful tool. i highly recommend it to anyone wanting to take their language study to the next level while doing exactly what language is for: connecting with other people! many thanks to the HelloTalk dev team as well for their excellent work :) one aspect of the platform that i struggle with is getting traction with moments. hellotalk has a number of suggested tags, but as far as i can tell, no way to see which tags are trending at any given time. i also get more interaction on moments when i don’t tag them compared to when i do tag them 🤨 i think giving users an idea of which tags more people are talking in so they can see where the party’s at would really improve the social media experience through moments on hellotalk. in conclusion, great app, minor notes. HT team, hope you see this and thanks so much!

A “Must Have” language learning app. I have been using the app for a long time now and I have to say it is one of the best resources out there. I am learning Russian and as an American, this can be quite difficult. Not only because the languages are so different, but also because there are not many people in the US that speak Russian. This app has connected me to many English speaking Russians at all levels of fluency. While not everyone is a perfect tutor, there are plenty of people out there that are ready to make an effort to help you learn. The app does a great job at connecting you with people and provides you with resources to help maintain communication even with strong language barriers. I have enjoyed it over the year or so that I have used it and will continue to do so...

VIP pop ups and unnecessary notifications. hopefully you guys will change things to where long pressing the message will prompt the option to translate instead of simply touching it... it's actually very annoying when i'm trying to reply to a message or copy it and the pop up keeps saying i need to do something to get three translations in a day. and i don't appreciate unnecessary notifications. i just got the app last night and randomly got a notification about me learning new words for free today. that's the point of the app... why do i need a notification for that? please just notify me when i am getting a message or a response to a post. until then, i will keep notifications off for this app. please just make these minor tweaks.

Worst language app ever. First of all, the app itself has a lot of issues. A lot of the so called “features” don’t even work. Like the “switch your language every two days” feature. It’s a joke. Most people on there are scammers, and only want you to “send nudes” while they send you pictures that are clearly of several different people yet they say they’re all “of them”. You can count on HelloTalk to do absolutely nothing about that as well. You can only block four people a day, and reporting someone…well good luck. Nobody has any interest in language exchange, including the creators of the app. Because I tried blocking so many people and told a bunch of the scammers hiding under fake accounts off, I was the one who was banned. The HelloTalk team never addressed the issues I reported both with their app function and the fake accounts. If I could give this app and their customer service zero stars, I would. You will have better luck on Tandem or even Speaky.

Overall really good.. The app is very easy to use. It’s simple and straightforward in all aspects. I loved the little lessons the app allows for free, 5 minutes a day. The moments on the app are like little tweets, also very quick and easy to figure out. Once you go onto another person’s profile you can translate a few words from their profile but you have to pay for more, it refills over a day. Though my only problem is the men that text me flirted and didn’t want to actually be friends or help me learn anything. Also if you don’t have an ‘appealing profile’ you will have to reach out, rather than people reaching out to you. I also saw some people use other people’s pfps so please don’t use your face in your pfp.

GREAT app to help you learn a language. This app is amazing in so many ways. I have been using this app for a few months now and I have already gotten better at Japanese by getting natives to correct me and chatting with them. The idea of this app is simple, you are able to talk with natives of the language you are learning and you can help people learn the language you’re native to as well, and it’s really helpful! I have been able to actually talk with natives in Japanese and when I post a moment people can see it and correct me if they want. The app layout is clean and nice. It’s very easy to use and very modern. I’ve made many friends on this app and have learned a lot of new vocabulary, grammar, and kanji by using this app. Most people that are on here are nice as well. I haven’t come across any person that is rude or mean so that’s great. Even if you do, block them and report them and continue on! If you want to advance your studies, get this app! It’s really helpful and you can do basically everything for free. Although I wish the part where you can learn the language is better, what we have already is good enough! Keep up your good work HelloTalk, and good luck on learning, everybody!

I love this app. Hands down the best language learning app out there, it’s a little confusing at first but it’s awesome, I just don’t come write reviews but honestly I wanna thank the creators MYSELF for coming up with this wonderful amazing app lol that has helped me learn soooo much it’s awesome I love it I love it you can meet so many ppl from around the world and literally meet life long friends, video call, chat, voice notes, call, group chats anything you can think of. I LOVE IT. I have my friends that I talk to every day and it’s so fun because it feels like you’re not even learning. Even there’s a main page where people make their social media posts, ask questions and I use it more than any other social media honestly. THANK YOU TO THE HELLO TALK CREATORS SO MUCH

my review. in my opinion, this app really deserves a lot of attention: it is convenient to use, it has a pretty nice design. there are a lot of friendly people whom you can help to learn languages, and vice versa — this app has wonderful tutors who can help you with studying languages. HelloTalk really has so much advantages, and i am highly recommend you to download it! also, i have a question for developers of this app. i know that there is a website of HelloTalk on PC, but i still wonder if a full-fledged app will be releases on PC with all the features that mobile version has (and not only messenger like on the website)? ‼️💖 i am looking forward to your reply.

Discriminatory & Poorly modded. I’ve had this app for close to 10 years, purchased a lifetime membership, and shown my loyalty as a user of the app and it’s disappointing to get a message from the HelloTalk team that my account has been suspended due to a “sexualized” profile picture. Firstly, the picture is a close up of my face and the little that is shown below my neck shows me wearing a cardigan and a shirt. I don’t know if another user reported it because they personally disliked the photo or if HelloTalk uses an automated system to detect violations in terms of service but either way I have not violated anything and I shouldn’t be forced to change the picture in hopes of recovering my account. I liked this app but this oversight and the fact that my account was immediately suspended and not so much as a warning given (even though there’s nothing wrong to begin with) has made me lose my trust in HelloTalk.

It’s a good app but it has some big problems.. I’ve been using HelloTalk for a couple of years now and it is pretty beneficial. However, it has some major problems. A note for anyone who wants to get this app: exercise caution. There are people who use this app for romantic purposes, inappropriate reasons, and/or to scam others. Please be careful. Another thing is the ads that I’ve gotten. I’m pretty sure it’s not just me. I got an ad where a woman was flashing the camera. It wasn’t only that, but there were women who were acting very sensual. Why? I don’t get apps like that at all, so I don’t understand why it’s showing up. Please take ads like that off. Please stop promoting apps that encourage that kind of behavior and that can get people into trouble. This is seriously a problem!

Profile being flagged repeatedly. My profile has been flagged several times because of my profile pictures. “Overly sexy” is not a good explanation. I feel like I’m being discriminated. Because I have big breast any picture that I post of overly sexy? I will be scrolling down my feed and they’ll be half naked girls who don’t get flagged? I’m not changing my profile picture again. There is nothing overly sexy about it. Also it’s not like your app lets you zoom in on profile pictures, so it honestly shouldn’t matter. I love the app and helping people on it but honestly I’m thinking of unsubscribing and deleting the app. Have a real human look at my picture. And not some robot who just sees a little cleavage and claims it to be automatically overly sexy.

Adding a new feature. So everything is cool and all but I think you should add a new feature when it comes to kicking someone, this feature comes from a game called “ clash Royale “ so when kicking someone from a room, their should be an option to write the reason. This would be good to tell them the reason they go kicked and it’s better than adding me and writing them. Another thing is having a faster way to add people, when in the “discover” page. Adding a “add” button or something. Because clicking on their profile and clicking text and sending a message takes time and adding a button would make it faster. The 2nd feature is no biggie tho, I would like to see the first feature and I’m sure other users would too.

Great Start!. I think this app has amazing potential. I just started using it and upon creating my profile I had already received over 100 messages and profiles views. If I may suggest considering to have an option to put your account on “Do Not Disturb (DND) Away, Online, Offline, etc.” or even the option to write down exactly what you’re doing (like a status) incase friends are interested. In ex: Watching Netflix, Playing Games, Sleeping. Just stuff like that to make things more interesting so people won’t think you’re ignoring them and whatnot. :) please consider this, I will continue my yearly subscriptions and eventually promote to lifetime should I become lucky with this request.
