Love but needs app updates. Agreed w earlier reviews in terms of needed updates, and no I don’t pay $15/month to not be able to use the app version and have to go to beta on my phone. Also really need to make definitions and sample sentences editable when adding the vocab rather than having to go back into the list and clicking (and most of the time this doesn’t work) Few responses to definition updates/corrections. I expect more w a high subscription fee I frequently recommend Skritter and like it a lot, but I do hope it addresses these user concerns

Prefect for learning to write Chinese. The learning system, ability to use textbook word lists and writing practice on the web app is great. I used it with a writing tablet. Got lazy after a while, since it required sitting in front of the computer. The iPhone app is so much easier to use! Writing on the screen (I bought a cheap stylus) is much more natural than the odd hand-eye-screen coordination needed on the web. It's also very snappy and much faster. Most impressive is that this works off-line. I can now practice outside, on the subway and in flight! Better than games :-) Hadn't realized that you allow practice with existing words even after expiration of the subscription. Very generous of you!

Awesome program!. I have been studying Chinese on and off for 30 years, and this app is one of the best study aids I've ever seen. I was already a subscriber to the web site, so it was no extra charge for me to download this app. But even for those who have not yet signed up for the web-based service, this app is well worth the subscription fee. Just being able to study vocal lists from a large number of Chinese textbooks, and the HSK lists, is a huge time-saver. Instead of making vocab lists (which I still do at age 54!), I am studying vocab. My 11-year-old picked up my iPhone and started "playing" with this program. She never studied a word of Mandarin, but now understands the concept of tones and stroke order…after only "playing" with the app for an hour. I haven't yet explored all the features of the app yet, but just what I have seen already warrants a five-star rating.

iPhone app hard to use. The iPad app works well, but there are major usability issues with the iPhone app. It’s near impossible to press the back and forward buttons. And you can tap to see what the next stroke is, but it always registers as trying to draw a dot. And it will never show you the full stroke order. Either you view the full character, or you have to tap to get a hint then draw what was hinted, then tap again, and hope that somehow the next tap is considered a request for a hint rather than a stroke. It doesn’t even have a way to show you the stroke order the first time you encounter a character, which makes learning new characters with it pretty frustrating. They still haven’t updated it for iPhone X either, which makes all the trade offs that they’ve made to save vertical space all the more frustrating.

Needs an update urgently. Not iOS 10 conform. Update HD graphics and make the app faster. It also crashes when studying lists. Loved the app before but it doesn’t work well with iPhone X at all

Newbie Inquiry. Hi, I’ve heard wonders about this app and I just want to know before I use it: When this app was developed was the forgetting curve taken into account? I am a man of science and I apply it to everything I do so please let me know the answer. Good job btw!

Bugs for months; frustrating to the point of unusable. Skritter is the only reason I even bought an iPhone, but I haven’t been able to use this app for months, because of tapping bugs that have ruined its user interface. I’ve long since canceled my subscription and quit recommending this app to others. It used to be so great... I keep checking back every few months, hoping it’ll be fixed. But it seems the developers have forgotten about us and are putting 100% of their energy into some lame beta version that misses the mark on literally everything that made the classic skritter great. A shadow of its former glory, Skritter is washed up and in desperate need of a competitor to swoop in and put it out of its misery.

Addictive Learning. The power of this app in learning Chinese can't be understated. Simply put, learning to write Chinese helps you read it. And the written language is hugely helpful for understanding the connections between words. This service is worth twice its price to the dedicated language learner. It's incredibly addictive. The tracking system is wonderful - you basically point Skritter to your textbook (while adding custom words on the side) and it just manages your learning for you. All you need to do is grab time here and there in your day to study, and the app sees that your time is spent as efficiently as possible. You don't study words you already know, and you quickly pound in those troublesome ones you keep forgetting. And then, over time, none at all fall through the cracks. What's more, you always know, at any given point, how many characters you know. You see real progress stats day by day. The app is slick and polished. The company is small, with friendly people dedicated to their users. I know the service costs money, but your language dollars couldn't be better spent.

App not working on 12.3.1 IPad Pro 11 inch in June 2019. I have been a Skritter user for a couple of years. Bought a new iPad Pro (11 inch) June 2019 and discovered the app just does not work at all on this hardware - it crashes on login with an existing account. I also feel that the developers have not updated this app for nine months and that it really needs the ability to operate on an ipad in landscape mode. Disappointing. There is a newer alternative version of this app but I find it slow and clunky to use. I would really prefer to see the bugs in this version fixed.

Essential app to aid in recognition of and learning to write Chinese characters. Once past the basics it is best used in combination with writing on paper

Essential app. Learning characters is essential to learning Mandarin, and I know of no better way to cram characters into your brain than Skritter. I’ve been a user since it was a website only interface, and Skritter is the reason I originally bought an iPhone. Couldn’t do without it.

Worth it. I was hesitant to subscribe at first because I wouldn't consider this cheap, but I went ahead since I was forgetting words faster than I could retain them and needed a solution other than working harder. Turns out, I'm even learning (and retaining) words I gave up on entirely because I thought I'd waste too much time practicing "obscure" proper nouns in favor of more common ones. In my opinion, this is an extremely efficient way to learn the three major aspects of vocabulary - comprehension, recognition, and generation. The algorithm so far has done a great job mixing it up and keeping you learning while drilling you on things you're likely to forget. Additionally, I can't stress how important it has been to see these characters magnified on an iPad display! It not only helps you see strokes better and have a more holistic view of what can be pretty intricate characters, but writing strokes on such a large scale seems to help me remember better as well. In retrospect, it completely makes sense - bigger means more of a visual impact, so much so that I can now easily visualize characters when prompted to. Things to improve: Their stroke recognition is at times annoyingly tied to the font they use. The mnemonics are better suited to people already well-versed in characters and radicals, but occasionally I find one that resonates with my limited knowledge. I wish their web app was nicer, but I guess I can't complain about that in this forum.

Best. Thing. Ever.. I liked the idea of Skritter, but I was initially turned off by the monthly fee. Once I tried it, I was even more interested, but the cost still seemed an issue. I bit the bullet though and paid for my first month. I am three weeks in to Skritter, and I am fully sold. Next month I will pay for the 6 month package, which is a big savings. Why the change of heart? To practice My Chinese in all the wasted moments of the day: the bus, standing in line, even in the bathroom (no shame)! The app is well balanced ad introduces new characters at the perfect rate for me and quizzes me just enough (due to its amazing spaced repetition software). There are there SRS apps out there, what justifies the cost? The execution of this is simply better, customizable but not overwhelmingly so, and it focuses on just writing, which imo is the hardest thing to test yourself on and push yourself to improve. And of course, the textbooks. You can make your own decks, but skritter gives you unlimited access to literally hundreds of textbooks made into character decks, instantly! It has removed every single excuse I have not to practice. And the absolute best part of all: even if I unsubscribe, I get to keep my progress and practice all of my words. All you lose is the ability to add new words. I don't know about you, but I am only kicking myself for not starting months ago. Try it out, you will see.

Good service with a crippling issue. The Skritter App is great for practicing character writing, and help with learning the corresponding tones and definitions. However, as a paid service, the app and Skritter have some troubling issues. In order to study specific characters, one must randomly shuffle through all of the characters he or she encountered through the app, which can be laborious and frustrating. Only after doing so can you study certain characters separately from the rest. This major issue makes the app comparatively useless to the old pen-and-paper technique to studying for tests or vocabulary quizzes. Also, should you just wish to study one of the three components of characters (tones/writing/definitions) this cannot be done until, once again, they have been seen randomly. Lastly, the interface is a bit clumsy, making it difficult to find specific characters you wish to study. It is pretty easy to get randomized ones, though. This leads me to reiterate, this app is great for reviewing and learning characters independently. It's use in conjunction with a course is questionable, unless these few issues (and somewhat counterintuitive features) are resolved or removed.

First rate!. The sounds and animations especially make it a joy to study.

Worth it. Love the app. Just want to thank the development team for such a useful app. Learning how to read Chinese is so much easier.

Stop syncing!. When I add words, I always have to let the app sync! And I think you can add dialects and feature CANTONESE! It's just just Mandarin Chinese, the app should meet everywhere around China! #SpeakTheWholeChina #DialectInChineseAlwaysInChinese

Best App Hands Down For Learning Chinese Characters. I've been a casual Chinese learner off and on for the last five or six years (i.e., no formal classes, using resources on the internet, not really studying for six months at a time, etc). In that time, I never learned to read (let alone write characters). Well, maybe a hundred or so, which I'd promptly forget. Enter Skritter. This is the only app, resource or anything that has been successful in teaching me to read and write characters. In less than a month, I'm up to over 500 characters. It's addicting and (disturbingly) fun. And that's the best part. This is a must have app for any learner of Chinese. There's no way around it. Download and subscribe now. You won't regret it. Plus, the customer support is quick, personal and fantastic.

Crashes immediately on study. Looks like it might be nice, but it crashes (app exits) whenever I actually try to use it. iPad Pro 11 inch, iOS 12.3.1.

Love the app. Love the app on my IPad but haven’t used it much on my phone so I can’t say if that works well or not.

Outstanding. I downloaded this just to mess around and see if I preferred practicing on my tablet or with paper and ended up buying it on the spot. This app is F.U.N! Well-thought out and educational, very pleased to have found it.

Great Vocab Learning Tool. This is a great app that has helped me tremendously in memorizing Chinese characters. Skritter's service is also available on their website, although if you want to use it on your iOS device, you must use this app, as the website version requires flash. Note that skitter is only useful for memorizing vocabulary and writing characters; it does not cover grammar or specific word usage. Also, although the app comes with a free 1 week trial, there is a $9.99 monthly fee to continue using their service. I believe it is possible to avoid this by loading all your vocabulary into skitter during the one week trial, as skitter will let you review material already associated with your account even after your trial expires (I choose to pay the monthly subscription fee because it allows for more flexibility, but mostly because this is a really excellent service and I believe it should be supported). PROs -well designed UI -option to import Vocab lists from hundreds of major textbooks -progress synced to external server -spaced repetition (very effective) -editable, community created mnemonics -excellent handwriting recognition -multiple self-grading options (wrong/so-so/correct/easy) -progress reports CONs -not optimized for iPad -some issues when writing hooked radicals (ie 比)

Tops. Best out there! Worth every penny. I use it religiously twice a day.

Genuinely outstanding study app. This app improved the rate at which I'm learning vocabulary by orders of magnitude, without taking any extra time. It's like night and day. For anyone who really wants to get good at Chinese, I'd say the skritter is easily worth every penny. Use it in place of whatever game you currently play while sitting on the toilet etc, and you basically just absorb characters without any expending any extra time, effort, or thought.

Effective but overpriced. I find the app very useful for studying characters in all aspects. It bothers me how expensive the subscription is, however, for what is a finite list of characters. The developer should allow a one-time purchase, permanent purchase of specific study lists/modules, or a significantly lower cost subscription model for multi-month or annual periods.

Functions but the UI is clunky. I was disappointed to see that the chinese app has not been updated to the cleaner UI of the Japanese app. Sometimes on my phone, certain buttons will be unreactive or slow in the peripherals of the screen. The look and feel of it just seem so outdated I am hesitant to pay money for this experience.

Great for maintaining skills that would otherwise be loss in the digital world. Great for reading/writing skills—harder for habit building. I love it when I use it, but sometimes have to remind myself to do it. A notification remind would be great. Overall very happy with the app!

Adding words too slow. App takes too long to load new words to custom lists. Makes it painful to create lists

Needs to update. This is an overall nice product with one glaring flaw. It desperately needs to be updated for the new screen sizes of the iPhone X and XS. It’s a crime to charge so much for a subscription and not update the software, now that it’s been more than a year since the X has come out. I hope the development team will address this issue ASAP.

Excellent. I've been using Skritter almost everyday for the past two months. I think it's definitely worth the price if you are serious about learning Chinese. I've been studying Chinese on and off for several years and skritter has helped me get back into the habit. I use it in conjunction with my text book. Check to see if the book you are studying is listed so you can upload your vocab list, otherwise you can enter them yourself which is pretty easy. So has skritter helped my writing? Yes, I can definitely notice a difference. And it's a lot more fun than writing the same character over and over again by hand like I used to do, which wasn't even all that effective for me. Skritter has also helped a lot with my tones, one of my biggest problem areas. Overall, really no complaints about this app. I think the folks working for skritter work really hard at correcting problems and you can email them if you have an issue. The customer service is fantastic. Five stars.

Fantastic app. If you want to learn to read Chinese, and not just speak Mandarin, this is the best app I've found. The method is similar to what Pimsleur uses to teach you to speak the language, but for writing and reading instead. I wouldn't use this app to learn to speak Mandarin. You should have knowledge of the language already. It does ask you to write words you've never seen. However, if you just press on the center of the screen, it assists you with the writing, or you can select the info icon to see the writing and get background on it before you attempt it the first time. Using the audio is especially helpful to solidify the pronunciation. I've learned about 300 words so far and it's been great fun. Highly recommended.

Best way to learn Chinese characters!. Very good app for learning the characters, though it suffers from some bugs.

Great App but I need help!. I’m giving this a five star review because this app has significantly increased my character recognition and reading skills! I’ve had some problems recently. The app would not open today. I deleted it and downloaded it again. After signing in, and trying to sync, the app said data was corrupted and I need to delete and download again. Hope problem gets fixed. This is a great app that is helping me reach my language goals.

Revolutionized My Study Habits. I've been struggling to find a good platform to make flashcard sets for Chinese for months. Since there are three components needed to learn chinese words -- the character, pinyin, and the definition -- the two-sided interface would create a gap in my learning. Skritter's interface bridges that gap completely. Now, I can actually study all aspects of each word, which in turn leads to much better retention. I've been able to learn more words in a day than I could in a week using my previous methods. Thank you Skritter!

Learning Hanzi. Good app. It makes an unpleasant job (learning Hanzi) possible. I work on Hanzi for at least a half an hour every morning, and I am slowly beginning to be able to read. My one suggestion would be to make the app work in landscape mode on my iPad. As I use the app most of the time on my iPhone, I don’t feel this inconvenience too much. But it would be nice to have the app comfortably available on the iPhone.

Outstanding App. This is the best Chinese app I have ever used. If you are learning Chinese, this app is indispensable! The spaced repetition system is highly effective, and the app gives you a nice amount of control over whether you study reading, writing, pinyin, tones, or any combination of the above. Devs, thank you so much for making such an awesome app for learning! This is a prime example of quality apps making the world a better place.

A Fine App. Perhaps the best for content and ease of use. I have learnt to read and write over300 characters.

Learned 2k words. You can get a lot out of this app if you put in the time. I’ve used it for years to complement my Skype lessons and have now learned 2000 words. This takes years of practice but this app is the way to go.

Cantonese support yet?. Great app...can’t wait until they add a Cantonese version !

Love this app. Been using this app off and on for studying characters for the past several years. Whenever I want to get back into reviewing my written Chinese, I always right wall-subscribe.

Adore this app. Just get it — extremely helpful.. Five stars but for one wee request: please dark theme for the iPad version, too? Soooo much easier to read. Still want the dark theme for the iPad (and in the new version, the iPhone too). But this is w/o question the best Chinese writing and vocabulary app around. Worth every penny.

Really helps me learn!. Like many of you, I have been trying to learn, but failing due to poor self discipline. Skritter makes learning fun. I am able to spend 20 to 45 minutes per day with the characters. Now many of my Rosetta Stone and Pimsler lessons make more sense.

Please do not my zero star with my one star. Please delete your app Thanks

Crashes on iPhone XR and iPad Air. Really sad, I cannot use it on my iPhone XR or my new ipad air. I would love to use the app and give it a try. I have heard its great for learning Chinese characters but as soon as I touch anything in the app it crashes. It won’t stay open long enough to even try it out.

The BEST study tool!. I've been using Skritter for almost a year now. I studied Chinese for four years in college and was looking for a way to maintain it without the structure of a classroom setting. I had tried all sorts of flash card programs to little gain, but as soon as I tried Skritter I was hooked. I became truly motivated to practice because it made studying so engaging, and I loved tracking my progress graphically. After adding the vocab lists from my college textbooks and practicing for a few weeks I realized that, through Skritter, I was not merely maintaining my level of fluency -- I was greatly surpassing it. Despite all my years of classroom work, it was only through Skritter where I finally knew my characters and tones backwards and forwards, and best of all I was retaining it. I wish I had used this tool during school because it would have made much more efficient use of my time. I now know more with less time and effort. The release of this app and the ability to study offline out on the road has revolutionized my daily life, and I could not be happier!

Awesome App - All Chinese students need this! Better than all other Chinese study apps. Love this app. Very well made and beautifully implemented. I was lucky to be a tester in the last month before the release and I can honestly say that I clocked more hours on Skritter in this time than the previous 6 months online! Anyone with a Skritter account should immediately download this app. (the makers were incredibly anal about getting it perfect for launch - but it's here now so you can't complain about it being a high quality app!) All Chinese students that are serious about learning and retaining their characters should get this app and pay for the subscription. $10/m is nothing when you think of it's benefits. (that's like 2 starbucks coffees a month) Also you can stop your subscription at any point and Continue using the app reviewing the words that you already know. Finally, the offline functionality is great! You can use it anywhere and anytime including on the plane. The app retains what you've studied and when it gets a chance (through 3G or WiFi), it will sync with the servers but it'll keep working indefinitely without. Simply the best character learning app out there. Get it!

Best of Show in its category!. One aspect of Skritter I like very much is this: If you don't have much time at all for a while to delve into full lessons with grammar and vocabulary, but you want to avoid seeing the progress you made slowly fading, using Skritter just to drill the character-writing aspect of learning Chinese is REALLY useful. Skritter will remember which characters you fail most, fail a little or nearly got perfectly (criteria adjustable in the settings). Your job is to practice every day until your writing reaches the "Gold / No Error" mark. Trust me, it's astonishing how fast, with the help of Skritter's "Spaced Repetition" system, you can actually start remembering, effortlessly, how to properly write the character in the correct stroke order, its meaning, and review the fun, mnemonic-like sentences that sometimes help an anchor your memory. If you want/need to keep up with your Chinese language proficiency levels and keep progressing, Skritter is a required tool in you panoply of Chines apps. Hope the above will help you see the value in paying to subscribe for the year. It is not cheap, but worth every cent if you use it regularly. Enjoy!

Must have for serious Chinese learners. I started learning Chinese on my own in college and eventually ended up moving to China and living there for 3.5 years. I got married while I was there and have been happily married to my Chinese wife for 5 years. I have used Skritter off and on over the years and can tell you that it has been the best tool for me to learn how to read and write, allowing me to communicate with my wife’s family through text (WeChat). When I lived there, Chinese people were always amazed at how much Chinese I could read. If you want to be able to receive and understand more Chinese passively, then you need this app. If you plan to live/visit China, then you will constantly find yourself staring at signs trying to decipher them without even realizing it. This natural tendency combined with learning through Skritter will allow characters to really stick in your mind. Does it still take regular effort/practice? Yes! Lots of practice! But you can do it anytime/anywhere with this app. I think what worked best for me was to add the character lists that corresponded with other language tools/textbooks I was using. There are tons of lists that can readily be downloaded for most popular language learning tools, books, programs, etc. If not, you can always add more! I like to think of character learning as a “fun” way to learn more vocabulary because it gives my mind a picture to associate the word with, which may seem counterintuitive for most folks. But it really can be fun! Start with the simple stuff and work your way up. You’ll start to see patterns and it won’t seem so intimidating.

Pretty sweet app. This is an amazing app with many great features. When I started to use it there were definitely a few times when I wished the app had a feature only to find out a little later that it already had it. Three small things I would like to see are 1. A more consistent memory of the previous word I just completed (so I can go back when I or skitter accidentally assign the wrong grading), 2. Access to the sample sentences available on the web-based version, (though I guess this could be a case of me just not realizing how to do this yet) and 3. The ability to go to the previous character or word from the info tab (I use auto advance and sometimes I try to see the definition of individual characters for a word I got wrong, but by the time I press for the definition I get the definition of the next word not the one I just got wrong... And to get back it would just be nice to skip the closing of this tab and reopening after I click to go back.) Overall though, I would say that this app is awesome, and even a big improvement over the already good web version.

I use it every day.. I use Skritter every day and it works. I can recognize characters in Chinese newspapers now, and the more I learn, the more I notice components that help me guess what other characters might mean. Skritter offers both traditional and simplified Chinese, or both simultaneously. (Also Japanese but I'm not studying Japanese). It's really great and their customer support is among the best in the App Store.

Love it. 非常好!

*The* app for learning Chinese characters. I've only been using the Skritter app a relatively short time, but I'm already addicted. It turns learning characters into a game, and helps you to keep practicing until you really remember. Minor drawback is that even with raw squigs mode etc, there are still more 'hints' than you'd get using pen and paper. Overall excellent - love 'dark mode'!

Pricey but worth it. Pretty much packages everything you need to get started or maintain regular maintenance of your vocab. Support has also been super helpful replying to any questions promptly, been using the app for ages.

Great app for serious and casual learners. I use this, and a recommend it for my students. iPad and iPhone versions are both great. A valuable part of my Chinese learning resources.

Good. Very helpful programme, have not found fault with it after 3 months use

M3and3r3r. The very best software available to help you learn Chinese and Japanese characters. It is quite expensive. However if you are spending a lot of hours in study then it is worth it.

App doesn't work. Once the app has been opened and a word list selected nothing happens???

Fantastic! Essential for Chinese Learners. This app is world class. Essential for anyone who wants to learn Chinese. Presentation is slick, runs smooth, looks great. Characters are such fun to draw especially on the 'dark' skin. My reading and writing is getting better and better every day. I'm telling everyone I know about this app. Already three of my friends are using it and loving it. Thanks Skritter. 你们都非常棒!加油!

Learn Chinese the write way. If you are learning Chinese and want to learn to read and write the characters, this is the best app, bar none. This is indispensable if you are serious about learning 汉字.

Concept is fantastic, execution a let down. For an expensive $15 a month, I really expected the app for the iPad to be far superior. It regularly crashes, regularly fails to connect when I want to input words, sometimes fails to save inputted words, and doesn't let me edit errors at the list-making stage. This has been this way during my whole 6 month subscription so far. The ONLY reason why I am continuing my subscription is because Memrise (which is free) doesn't let me create my own lists, whereas Skritter does. Once Memrise introduces this function, I will unsubscribe from Skritter. If you don't need to create your own list, stick to Memrise.

Skritter. Awesome, it helps me so much with my Chinese!

Great ap. Really helping my Chinese study, definitely worth the money

Crashes. App keeps crashing for me.Cannot even try it :(

Fantastic way to learn characters. Best app yet for learning to read/write characters. The best bit though is you'll keep remembering them.

Fun way to do serious learning. I've been a long-time user of the Skritter web app, which I used with a tablet for writing characters. That was good, but this iOS app is even better. I can practice Chinese anytime and anywhere I like, and Skritter makes it fun!

Great app. I've tried many learning tools. This is one of my favs along with Pleco.

Me Gusta!. Me Gusta! 很好! Fantastic, Bon, etcetera

Takes the pain out of learning to write and practicing characters!. Although there are a few additional feature that would be nice, there is really just nothing that compares. This is a fantastic app that will only continue to improve.

Awesome. very well designed app, only one that keeps me at it, stroke up to clear grid is a great idea, can practice chalanging characters repeatedly as you wish, subscription scared me at first but the free week trial got me hooked

Great app, unfair pricing. Used the one week free trial and loved it. Trying to get a 12-month subscription now, but the price increases by $10 every time I press "buy"!! Probably another example of non-US customers being ripped off!!!

Top notch. Love it! So easy to use. Even with twin toddlers and a preschooler I manage to sneak in a little bit of skritter. Thank you!

Any new updates?. I hope they push out new updates just to tidy things

Wowsers!. Skritter is an amazing app, I go to school in grade 7 and love how interactive and educational this app is! I am truly a skritter fan!

My most valuable study tool. Skritter isn't just effective, it'd also heaps of fun! I've gone from struggling to be motivated to learn my characters to actually really looking forward to each session. I highly recommend it.

Perfect for practice. Great app. Everything I was looking for as a support tool for my lessons. Being able to write rather than trace characters is endlessly helpful for memorising. Only helpful change would be able to select not to finish a list, it is helpful to be able to keep repeating learning lists even if you "know" them.

Must get this app if learning Chinese. This is a must-get-app if you're learning Chinese. The app has matured a lot over past 4 years. My only struggle is trying to see the tiny digits on the graphs and hopefully one day we can zoom into the graphs. Maybe a few other motivational features can be implemented to encourage learners to keep pushing themselves

App doesn't work. Opened app and got black screen. Couldn't do anything.

Quite amazing. Sleek, addictive and powerful. Doesn't quite do everything, though (e.g. no tone colours). Also, some of the targets are badly implemented, meaning it's too easy to set off the wrong behaviour; and the stroke recognition is frequently way off the mark.

Great app!. Love the app! It's the best! It helps me study much better and is far from boring! :D Too bad this app has to have subscriptions otherwise I would have gladly bought the app, so would've be worth it!

Great!. A really great app to learn Chinese characters. In conjunction with my Hanzi textbooks, it makes learning Chinese characters that much easier and is kind of fun too! I would recommend this app to anyone who would like to be able to write correctly in Chinese as well as pronounce the characters and tones if you wish. The app also allows you to memorise definitions of the characters. An added bonus!

了不起 !. I have returned to the study of Chinese after a 20 year break. This app is unbelievably good at coaxing those long-lost characters from the dim recesses of my brain... And then making them stick. A must-have tool along with Pleco. Bought a two year subscription - totally worth it.

Really Good. Easy to use, lots of word lists. The best App I've seen to practice your Chinese. Skritter links seamlessly to PLECO for more information on words, but the flash card practice is better than on PLECO.

Awesome App!. Best chinese learning app so far! Massively accelerated my character learning。 Integrates nicely with pleco and the skritter web site。 The ability for custom lists as well as premade lists for common textbooks is great。 App also allows posting to the skritter forums。 One of the most full featured apps I've used!

Useful, but not worth the subscription. A large reason I used skritter is because my university pays for my subscription. The list editor, on both PC and on the app, is woefully unwieldy. You wonder why because a word with a little info attached surely should take up much memory, but apparently it does and not only is the list editor not well thoughout, it also takes ages to load through it. Negativity aside, it is one of the best ways to study other than just pen to paper, which is still superior because you don't have to rely on the speed at which skritter decides if you're done with a character or not. Basically, if you have the money to spare go for it, if not probably save it for something more useful.

Pretty good but way overpriced. This service is pretty good but very expensive for what it is. The best feature is really that you can pull in existing lists of textbooks. I used this app pretty heavily but have come to realise that you can get 95% of the way with a little bit of work on your end.

Great program, silly pricing!. I have been demoing Skritter for a couple of days now and I am very interested in purchasing it even if there is a monthly subscription, which is strange in itself. However, there is no way I will be parting with $15/month for this app as that price isn't reasonable.

Learning Chinese. I have found this app to be very useful, tried the two week trial first then I brought a month, and now a years subscription.

Actually makes learning characters easy and fun!. The Skritter app is very very good. I actually find it more effective to use the app than the website. For me, actually writing on a screen solidifies the connection in my mind to remember the characters much more than using a tablet and then having a separation between the hand movement and the visual character on the screen. It's more realistic. Well worth the subscription cost to Skritter!

Best Chinese Learning app. Still the best Chinese learning app, still plugging away at learning thousands of Chinese characters, and skritter is the only thing that has made it all possible :-)

Love this app. Absolutely love this app for my study. There is a huge selection of textbooks to choose from and you can find pretty much any of the main ones. It's great for stroke order, tone recognition, character recognition and in general is a great cognitive tool to use for your study. I wish they would have a few sales every now and then on their subscriptions and a dialogue narrative would be really useful too. Also, some voice recognition to the app would be awesome but not sure if it would be possible

Simply the Best, Period.. Simply the best way to learn Chinese characters, in any form. A hundred times more efficient than physical flashcards and writing randomly. Worth every cent to buy a subscription and add vocab lists from whole textbooks. It's easily the best - use Skritter and Pleco and you'll learn Chinese very fast and thoroughly.

Best. App. Evarr.. Title says it all. 谢谢 Scritter!

Why change the purchase?. This is a great app that used to cost $10. Now they want $15 per month for it. Its good, but not that good! Most students can't afford $15/month

Thank you.. The Skritter web app has made the last 3 years of Chinese study so much easier and more enjoyable. Now, the apps for iOS have refreshed my passion for studying characters. This is THE best tool for a serious Chinese learner to have. Worth the investment? Absolutely.

Worth it. An excellent app that integrates with your studies. Allows you to use those moments of down time to do a little practice, and works with the computer at home as well. Great for every day practice.

Outdated for XS. Which is a pity given the high price you are paying. New version is in beta status since forever.

Thumbs Up. A great supplement to learning Chinese. I find that Skritter gives me a break from learning how to speak Chinese and allows me to think about learning the language from a different aspect. I find myself actually trying to read signs now and am noticing that I understand more and more characters with just 15 minutes a day. It's kinds fun too. Good luck. MW

Useful & practical. Skritter saves time and makes learning enjoyable.

Best app for Chinese. Have tried a number of different apps for studying Mandarin and Skritter is by far the best. This app in combination with Pleco has helped my Chinese skills massively.

Perfect app for serious Chinese learners.. Simply put, I have become fluent in Chinese through Skritter. It's my hyperbole for me to say that I honestly don't know where I would be now without it.

A joy to use, and very practical. I've been using Skritter since about half a year after starting to learn Mandarin from scratch. It's the unequivocal winner as a way to keep up with all the Chinese characters I came across in my studies -- and just casually in my spare time. Highly recommend it to anyone learning the language.

Great, but.... The one thing I'd still like to see on the iPhone app is an example sentence feature, as exists on the website. That being said, now that it's on my mobile platform, I find it much easier to turn to Skritter and really make progress with it. I definitely recommend the site to any student of Chinese.

?. I've learned more in a month with Skitter than in years of trying on my own!

Excellent App for learning to write Chinese characters. I use it every day. The app has vocab lists from many textbooks available. Excellent tool for learning stroke orders and practicing writing Chinese characters.

Great tool. Skritter is great and this app is very useful in allowing studying to happen on the go even with no Internet connection. It's somewhat crashy and has a few glitches, but I trust these will be worked out in time.

High price for what it really offers. I started to use skritter because when I was doing the trial, I realized It was quite useful to improve my chinese writing and tones pronuntiation in a short time. However the application hasnt been fully developed and it has some bugs like it stays in the same characters without testing new ones. Also, sometimes it doesnt allow you to test the words you want or the parts of the language you want to practice like writing, listening and tones. Therefore i wouldnt recommend to pay such a high price for a service that the app is acually not going to offer.

Good, but crashed. I gave 5/5 but to be honest i didnt even get through the intro without it crashing, so i deleted it. And im on ipod5... So....

iPad good; iPhone broken; expensive. On the iPad this app works excellently and is a joy to use but a bit expensive. However it has not been updated for the iPhone X and not only does it look terrible, it doesn’t really work. It always thinks neutral tones are 1st tone. You can’t tap to get a hint, instead it draws a line for character, and you can’t go backwards, etc. For such an expensive monthly fee to use the app, I expect the authors to keep it up to date.

Best character learning method. I can't thank Skritter enough for helping me learn so many characters, definitions and tones over the past year. Now I am studying Mandarin full time in China and love how I can practice characters on the go. I just returned to Beijing from Nanchang on the train and was so happy to find my Skritter app works perfectly offline. Definitely had a productive ride back. Love Skritter!! :)

Confusing. When you start, they expect you to know a bunch of words.😠 Luckily my mom is here to help.

Essential lifelong tool. I had listed a number of frustrating problems in a very recent review and I am pleased to report they have all since been addressed. My concerns with management’s sudden loss of what had been years of typically conscientious responsiveness are no longer valid, and I am relieved to discover there had been some sort of email ether snafu. So I am reposting my initial review, which is a small measure of Skritter as an essential Chinese learning tool. Thanks, guys! _________________ Previous review: I don't know how I'm ever going to let go of Skritter, it has become an essential part of my day. I never want to return to the days of forgetting most of what I've learned, and Skritter proves to be worthy of its promises to prevent that. It works for all levels, is a pleasure to use, and frankly I just can't live life so successfully in Chinese without it. If it weren't for Skritter I would have given up shortly after beginning, instead of zooming along now several years running. Looking forward to future speed enhancements in loading lists on mobile, and even more study options for those learning both traditional and mainland scripts. Would love to see an option for traditional characters introduced first, much easier to learn both that way! How about some more "Eccentric Flavours" built into the algorithm, as surprises and rewards for learning. Thanks Skritter team!

Skritter Chinese character app. It’s the best Chinese language app I have used. It brings results quick and helps maintain results as you continue. It’s been a great tool for learning Chinese characters along with all of my classroom teachings of grammar. Thank you so much for skritter.

Best way to learn Characters!. Makes learning characters as 'fun' as it can be. Easier than pen and paper! They have all the major textbooks too.

Good but expensive. This is great app but really too expensive for upwards of over hundreds of dollars

Please fix. I don't know why but when I write the second tone it doesn't detect the stroke, causing me to have no choice but to get it wrong in the end.

Great app!!. Skritter is an awesome tool to help learn Chinese! I especially love how it has so many textbooks to choose from, including the one I am using for school!

The perfect complement to Skritter. Really solid app - a perfect complement to their subscription service. I was skeptical about Skritter before this app since I can't see myself using a trackpad to write characters, but obviously the iPhone is much better suited. This app is really well-thought-out and addictive like a game, but gives real returns in terms of learning. Highly recommended!

Great app. Very helpful to learn Chinese.

If you are serious about learning to write Chinese, then use Skritter!. This app is *the* best way to learn to write in Chinese. It takes care of all the fuss about when to review your old words and lets you focus on learning.

A joy to use. I have been waiting for years for this app to arrive, and it has been worth the wait! Skritter for iPhone has been redesigned for this platform, and it looks and works great, even on the new retina iPad. The fellows at Skritter have made it uncompromisingly easy to keep coming back everyday and to pick up your studying where you left off. I used to use the Skritter website sporadically, but now that it is in my dock, I launch it daily. The controls are intuitive (even without reading any of the instructions), and the app feels completely natural when using a Bamboo stylus on the touchscreen. Learning new words is such a quick and enjoyable process that I don't know why anyone would want to learn Chinese any other way. No serious Chinese learner should be without this app.

A great program. Not cheap, but worth every penny. There's no better way to memorize your Chinese characters. That said, it's for people who know a few already. It might be better if they had a true beginner/teaching mode for those just starting. The only downside is the cost, but if you think of it compared with a Chinese tutor helping you a few hours a week it's a total bargain!

Fantastic App. This app is absolutely amazing and is essential if you are learning Chinese. My Chinese vocabulary shot through the roof in 2 months. I still continue to use it a lot! I recommend it to everyone learning Chinese.

The best tool to learn characters. The folks at Skritter have created a fantastic learning tool. The kinesthetic element exponentially commits the words to memory! Excellent!

Skritter Chinese is fantastic!. Certainly one of the best language apps for the iPad!!! Very well done!

Bad. Trying to teach my daughter how to write Chinese but she doesn't know a single word and they expect her to know how to write a random word without guidance! She's only 8!

Excellent start and good practice.. I've completed about a year of study, and have enjoyed learning everything. Aside from a few weird definitions and example sentences, this app is an excellent learning tool.

Love it!. Great App. A very useful addition to my class room studies.

Very good app. This app is great. The only down side is subscription price.

The best tool out there for memorization. For writing, it is better and more intuitive than the Skritter site (although missing features such as the sample sentences- so sometimes it is nice to alternate between the two). Drawing the characters helps to memorize them, and is the best way of testing yourself an confirming what you know. You too will be convinced after the free trial. The subscription is totally worth it for the amount you will use this tool, and the constant development and improvement which is taking place. I am happy to pay for the best.

Good for learning. Good for learning Chinese mandarin and Cantonese

The best. There is no better way to memorize characters. Skritter makes it effortless.

Needs an update. Out of date
