Garmin abuses your content. Even though we pay Garmin for the service, Garmin now requires full rights to use/sell your content ... “8.3 Content License from You. You agree ... that inReach has no responsibility to you or to any third-party for ... any content that you create, transmit or display on or through the inReach websites ... Content which you submit, post or display ... you give inReach a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any such Content. Furthermore, you agree ... for inReach to make such Content available to other companies” Also, one our Inreach devices were stolen. I asked Garmin to let me know when the new party registered the stolen unit. I was told the only thing they would do is block activation but only as long as I paid to keep it registered with them. This adds value to people stealing units and makes Garmin complicit in the thefts. Unfortunate, I used speak highly of the service. Shopping other companies now. And no way to stop emails from Garmin asking you repeatedly, for access to our Facebook.

It’s Useful For Managing Your Device. I have an InTeach Mini and the app is useful in controlling the device and sending messages. As a map navigation app, I find All Trails or Avenza to be much better for that than this app. Just a heads up, I had to reboot my iPhone 11 to make the app fully functional.

Dropped Messages.... I currently subscribe to the monthly safety plan and as such perform a monthly test. This month (March 2021) my test message was never received (lost?). This is the first time that this has happened since Garmin took over but it is very concerning since I use their service for safety purposes. What if I needed to communicate in an actual emergency? Apparently Garmin devices/services cannot be relied upon...

App does not stay connected. This app worked great when I first got my InReach a couple years ago. Not sure what has changed, but the app no longer stays connected to the device for more than a few minutes at a time. Fortunately my InReach device still seems to work well on its own, but without a consistent connection the app is completely useless.

Needs a watch app. This would be even better if I could could text from my Apple Watch when I leave my phone behind.

Good for communication and emergencies, bad for mapping. The app has all sorts of bugs and missing functionality. For instance: * When viewing last track, all the stats (distance, trip time, time moving, speed max, moving average) show “—“ instead of a value. Also, you can’t zoom or pan in this view. * There is no function that I can find to show your current position * doesn’t show tracks of where you’ve been unless you enable that in options. * If you do more->edit, it shows you a view of draggable icons, but there is no way to leave that screen without force quitting the app. * Long delay between when you track with your device and when it shows up in the app. Bottom line is that I’ve switched to Gaia GPS for any time I want to see where I am or where I’ve been on my phone. I have used the app successfully for text messaging when out of cellular range, so it’s not worthless.

Too limited. I recently bought an inReach Mini, in order to see my elevation gain etc. I have to download the track online, then upload it into Garmin Connect. Garmin Connect won’t sync directly to the device. All the information is there, this app just doesn’t display it and I can’t sync with Strava or anything. For the price of the device and the necessity of purchasing a subscription plan, I expect more user compatibility and functionality without having to do everything in a roundabout way.

Hard to see. Please change the diagonal line shading for areas such as national parks. It makes it impossible to see the Topo lines or read labels. On the subject of labels, please allow making the labels larger so they can be readable while walking with a device in hand. Please also allow for more detail when zoomed out. Trails and small roads quickly disappear when zooming out. In principle this app should be way better than a 10 year old garmin handheld given the amazing quality of the screen image and touch sensitivity. But I can’t see anything on this app!! Hopefully some easy fixes that will get changed. 🤞🏻

Problems with text. In the beginning of using I had no problems, but after a little while I am having Issues with texting, I can’t see what I write on message but I can send later no problem. I tried to reinstall app but still have that problem

DO NOT UPDATE to 2.12. Latest version cannot use any of your PHONE CONTACTS unless the numbering format begins with “+1”. This prefix WAS NOT required prior to this update. If your contacts do not include this prefix, you will need to either ADD “+1” to all your contact numbers or manually type the number when you want to send a text vi inREACH. Some fool at Garmin did not properly test this.

Doesn’t store waypoints. This app is generally very good, but it fails catastrophically on one critical element: it deletes you waypoints. After spending an afternoon collecting waypoints for work, I went back to look at them on the map - GONE! The app either didn’t store them or just decided it was going to delete them on its own. Thank goodness I didn’t rely 100% on this piece of crap and had the forethought to write the coordinates, or the entire afternoon would’ve been wasted. Fatal flaw. Go with another app if you actually want to do something other than just look at maps, like Gaia GPS. It’s better in many ways and actually records your data, unlike this piece of crap.

NOAA CHARTS!. I would have been 100% onboard with getting the mini2, HOWEVER! The removal of NOAA charts was a deal breaker for me. And TBH think I like the older digital compass. I’ll live with the shorter battery, it’s already good enough. If Garmin wants me to go to the mini 2 it should haven’t taken features away from the mini2

Works great!!. The earthmate app & in reach worked great. I used it with in on reach on a 6 day rafting trip on the middle fork of the salmon river; deep canyon walls, zero cell service for the entire trip. The only thing that I couldn’t get to work was an alert on my iPhone 13 but the inreach alerts user when a new message is available.

Absolute JUNK. How many of these supposed companies are going to phone it in when it comes to app development. You know the whole point of having an app that works with an inreach device is to simplify and make it easier, not more complicated. The text box for the messenger section is white, the font is white too! Which means, can’t see what you’re typing. It’s also super buggy and doesn’t connect half the time and likes to send messages to the wrong contact. Yup, completely shot messages to a different contact than the one selected. There’s a reason apps like these have low ratings, because these developers don’t know what they’re doing yet still have a job.

Functional enough for emergencies and redundancy. Garmin Explore is a bit clunky sometimes to view and review tracks or other information you might have synced across platforms, but it does serve some purpose and function. It works well enough to use the message system when paired with an InReach. Would love to see smartwatch integration. For example, I often mount the device to my motorcycle to take advantage of the minimal info on it’s screen and give it a good clear view of the sky. I would like to have the option to send an SOS/message via Phone/InReach by a smartwatch app if it were hard to get closer to the motorcycle in an accident to access either my phone, also mounted to the mounted to the motorcycle, or InReach. There are always task specific apps that excel, but Garmin’s range of apps add function to their devices.

Excellent app if you have the Satellite Tracker. This app is amazing for outdoor adventure. It connects to your Delorme/Garmin satellite tracker via Bluetooth and let’s you use your phone screen instead of the tracker itself. I’ve taken this on many adventures and it’s the perfect compliment to the satellite tracker.

Worst navigation and map app I have. The only reason I even have this app is that it works well for messaging while Bluetooth tethered with my inreach. Tracking works ok tethered to the inreach but creating routes and waypoints and syncing to other devices or to the Garmin website is about as unintuitive as it gets. Importing and exporting gpx files is the worst. I have so many problems I would not know where to begin. I know you can do these things but it’s always a major pain. It might be that my go to apps, Gaia and Avenza, are just so much easier to use for creating routes/tracks or importing/exporting routes/tracks. The inreach is an indispensable tool for outdoor adventures and I love it for the peace of mind it gives me for emergencies and the ability to communicate with friends and family while I’m in the backcountry. It’s a good thing for Garmin that they offer the inreach because if Garmin had to rely just on the Earthmate app, they could never stand up to the competition.

InReach Explorer. We love our InReach Explorer we live off grid and have used it for a few years now to communicate with friends and family. It also gives our family a way to see where we are and know that we are okay, especially in the winter when we don’t go to town. It took a little getting used but not a big deal

Can’t edit presets. This app has basic functionality but I agree it needs updating. For example, it should have functionality to update the 3 preset messages without having to go to the website.

No option to use WIFI only. The app just downloaded 1.5GB of data on my 4G service plan!! No option for wifi only downloads. Watch out or you could get extra service charges like me on your phone bill. It seems as though you can't turn off the iPhone GPS and only use the Garmin GPS as it bugged out when I tried to disable location services. I really love be able to track all my hikes and have it available on my phone but this app gets 1 star for selling all my data to third parties after I have spent $500 on this device + services. That's shady

Strong but not perfect.. This concept is amazing. There are still some functionality issues and it’s not as intuitive as it could be but it is by far the best way to communicate while you’re off the grid. I would give this 4 stars but the updates are behind. For example, the app doesn’t support the dark appearance iOS

Won’t show on CarPlay. This app makes it easy to send and receive messages but it would be better if it would show up on my Jeep Wrangler CarPlay screen. I would then know when I get a text message and when off the grid with no cellular service, I could navigate to a waypoint without have to look at the handheld while driving. If someone knows how to do this, it would be helpful. I have gone into settings on my iPhone and general then CarPlay but the Earthlink app does not show up??

Unsatisfactory. On a small screen, the map the map can be difficult to use because in order to see detailed features you’re forced to zoom in very far. Also, as others have mentioned, the app sometimes sends messages to the wrong contact (which can be embarrassing or even dangerous). Occasionally messages received to the inreach mini never show up in the app, and you have to scroll through on the inreach to mark them as read. Also, sometimes messages which you did read on your phone still show up as unread on the inreach. Finally, one of the most frustrating features of the app is that it doesn't handle message notifications in a proper, native way. Most of the time I have to open the app to receive notifications of messages, even though notification sounds and badges are on for the app. I realize that this may be a battery saving feature but it should be optional. If my inreach is outside and my phone inside my pocket, then when I receive a message my phone should make a notification sound, and I should be able to read the message on the Lock Screen, like I can when I receive a message in any other messaging app. If you haven’t bought an inreach yet, let me suggest a ZOLEO instead. They have more reliable message delivery and a much better app experience.

less expensive than sat phone👍. I will mainly use the garmin mini for sat messeges and the sos ability. the gaia app along with latest ipad and iphones that have built in gps and works off line after you first down load maps. works awsom . sometimes i use google map first do to its better satilite maps and get corodinants from it and transfer them to gaia app . gaia app works on smart phones and pc. I love it

App on IPhone disconnects. Very frustrating last two years when through hiking the app losses connection with my IPhone. I’ll have to go to the phones settings and disconnect it from the iPhones Bluetooth connection . At first I would select forget this device and then re-pair the Garmin in the app. This still only worked for a few minutes before the IPhone Bluetooth would again connect which drops app connection. I found disconnecting it gave me about 2-3 minutes to send a message or quickly view my location on the map. Anytime I wanted to use my Garmin I had to do this time wasting ritual. May as well just use Gaia to navigate.

What are we paying for?. I really want to know how Garmin can charge so much for something that only works half the time if your lucky. What’s the point of putting out an update if you can’t update the device itself. They have so many different apps you have to download just to see where your device falls. So I’m asking garmin WHAT AM I PAYING FOR IF THE THE DEVICE DOESNT DO WHAT ITS SUPPOSED TO?

Great Nav App. I use this app on my phone for navigating backcountry snowmobiling. I always carry my inreach in my pack for emergency use only. I use Earthmate on my phone for navigating. The downloadable topo maps have saved me many times, and have also helped me find new rideable areas as well. It seems many people have given negative reviews due to the inreach not linking up properly to their phone. I don’t usually ever mess with that. I keep it powered off in my pack. Using it for nav would be clumsy compared to using Earthmate. I save it incase my phone battery runs out or if I need to communicate while out of cell service for some reason. My only complaint about it would be that it only saves a certain amount of tracks. I’m not sure if it’s time or total mileage, but after a while old tracks will disappear. That said it stand by my five star rating, just for the fact of how many times it has helped me either get out of trouble or find new areas to get into more trouble. (Haha)

Not Happy. I am going to join the ranks of the disgruntled here. The InReach Mini seems to be a fine piece of hardware. But so far the App and the Explore Garmin Website stink. Its a clunky arrangement to have to use the web based Explore Garmin site to configure messaging in the App and device. But the biggest gripe so far is I cannot log into my Garmin account and the reset password option is not working. Tried two different browsers. Something is really messed up. Just got the InReach. Hope to use it on a trip tomorrow. But can’t fully set it up. If it does not fix , I will probably be returning it. More later. Garmin could do so much better

Nice redesign. New Dark mode seems half done. Can’t see text white on white when I type. Hopefully they do a proper dark mode. Still the easiest way to stay in touch. I have been using the inreach with an external antenna attached. Near real-time texting. Amazing and great to stay in touch while in the middle of the gulf of Alaska. Really liking the new look on the iPhone X. By far the easiest way to stay in touch when there is no cell phone service. It would be great to have a dark theme as well. I love the InReach and the ability to easily stay in touch with my family while away from home. One thing I wish the app did is remember when I edit which icons are accessible. It always seems to rest to the default layout. Please fix. It’s annoying to have to rearrange every time I open the app. I believe it happens when my phone looses Bluetooth connection.

Drops Bluetooth connection. As many others have noted, this once reliable app now constantly says it is disconnected from Bluetooth despite the fact that both my phone and the inreach report a connection. When this happens the app becomes useless. Only fix is to disconnect Bluetooth and then reconnect but that only works sometimes.

Buggy and outdated. This app seems to be buggy, slow and outdated. Syncing with the InReach is frustrating. If I had to work though this during an emergency it would be a scary experience. This is making the InReach seem like a complete waste of money compared to competitors. Too bad I already bought it :(

I love it. I use Earthmate almost ten months out of the year, out in the middle of the pacific. I love how easy it is to use with my iPad and iPhone for texting family back home from my Garmin Explorer+. It’s so easy to stay in contact with my loved ones now. Only wish it was easier to sync contacts. Other than that, I love it.

Overly limited functionality. As has been pointed out before, by far the biggest problem with the app is the inability to mange preset messages. The app desperately needs to be able to: 1) modify present messages, and 2) modify preset message recipients. It would also be very helpful if the contacts list could be manually changed within the app. No apps get access to my address book—period. Every company, I repeat *every* company, is eventually hacked and that information spilling out is just too much of a risk. The InReach devices (I have the Mini) are remarkable technology and the Mini works amazingly well, but this app is (and frankly all the Garmin interfaces are) dreadfully awful. I mean, come on. To use an InReach device you have to manage the configuration online, then to sync that configuration you have to download and install an app on a PC or Mac, and to update the firmware you have to download and install yet another app on a PC or Mac. And on this app you can sort of do some of that stuff, but not all of it. Could someone *trying* to make it convoluted mess things up any more?

Not a user friendly app. After an hour of using, still cannot figure out the app. Purchased unlimited texts but says I have 5 practice texts. What? Thought maybe I purchased the wrong plan (explorer), but now cannot find plan details. This really should be that hard. This app is definitely not user friendly. Now wondering if I just rolled down my car window and tossed out a bunch of money. Disappointed.

Needs to check for messages more frequently. I have loved the Garmin inReach. My work is primarily out of cell service and so I use it to keep in touch with work and my wife. The only thing that I want improved is the frequency that it checks for messages without having to manually check for them. My suggestion would be to either have it check every five minutes or allow the user to set a timer in the app or on the device to send out a manual check for messages at specified intervals. I would love to be able to set my inReach up to check for messages every 5 minutes or while hunting set it up to check every 30 minutes. Long story short I think it would be a huge improvement to allow the user to specify the frequency of how often it checks for new messages.

Needs ability to send preset messages with this app. I cannot find a way to send preset messages (one of the 3 messages I can send as much as I want for free). I see quick text, but that is just a normal text messages that counts against the number I have per month... I don’t need that with full smartphone keyboard. Please fix.

Needs a few more things... Overall, I am very pleased with the app paired with my inreach mini via Bluetooth, but would like to see the following additions: 1. Apple Watch notifications 2. Apple Watch app with Watch complication 3. Some kind of “push” notification on the phone when a message is sent/received. Push notifications may not be possible without cellular signal, but an app notification should be possible, along with a sound/vibrate alert? 4. Ability to import your own pdf map with coordinates, such as the national forest service “MVUM” maps. These additions would make the app 5-Star for me!

Basic. I’m struggling to not write a nasty review now as I’m presently annoyed. It’s a pretty basic app for the price you pay to get an inreach. The fact that I can’t remove track points is very frustrating. The one time you accidentally drive home while still tracking and that line will be one your map forever unless you delete the ENTIRE trip. Really upsetting.

What garbage!. I have been in IT 20 years and to see how poorly this app is built is an absolute shame. Limited message capabilities and storage. No warning when you are about to max the data and the app locks up. The primary use of this app is when you are off grid. If you are off grid and the message is “Delete the app and reinstall to unlock it”, can you see the problem? You are off grid with no access! The farming tool is very limited as well. Take the high rates for service and apply them to product development, quality and customer service. Please help the users that rely on your tool.

Rubbish app for Inreach Mini. Wow this app is bad. When connected to my Inreach Mini it won’t sync contacts and settings. Can’t change the preset or quick messages and when I go to type a new message I can’t read what I am typing as the text is invisible in the text field. I have deleted and reinstalled the app, hard rebooted my phone and still won’t work. I have to plug the Increach into my laptop to male any changes.

Crippled. The Garmin Earthmate app is no longer being updated and lacks even basic features like exporting tracks. The InReach+ device itself would be ok, but you are forced to use Garmin’s idiotic website to manage and download data. The website is poorly designed and broken most of the the time. For example exporting tracks to .gpx files has not worked for a long time. And Garmin’s help website is useless because the help pages do not actually provide descriptive information for topics covered. You can check out the useless help website to see for yourself. This product is a great example of what happens when a reasonable piece of hardware ends up being garbage because the company is too myopic to develop good software to support the device (and instead hires temp “script kiddies” to run a stupid website). Sad, very sad.

Not for a serious map user. Cool sat imagery. How come we can’t plan routes from a mobile device? How come waypoints don’t have elevation information? How come the contour lines don’t have any data to include labeling of numbers or intervals and change colors at various zooms making it impossible to read elevation? Seriously. A map has bold contour lines with an actual number on it. Then the 5 lines or so in between have an interval. I learned this in basic training. What good are those lines if the user can’t interpret them. Fix this immediately it makes the app unusable in any real mountain terrain!

Not impressed. This app is the least stable app I have installed. Unfortunately it is the only way to connect to an inReach device. Common issues: -Frequent 1-2 second lockups/hangs where the app becomes unresponsive, tapping on buttons in the app while it’s unresponsive will open up multiple instances of the same message window when the app becomes responsive again -App crashes about once per day -approximately one message out of every 20 messages received will not sync over to the earthmate app and can only be read on the inReach device itself. After reaching out to garmin support, no resolution was found for this issue. Running the latest earthmate and firmware, tested with two iOS devices. Not impressed.

Offline Maps. Suggestion: make it easier to see which maps you already downloaded for offline use.

Excellent App - Read description & instructions. App without the related inReach device is very good with internet access. When used with the inReach device, the app is fantastic, very helpful for navigation PLUS ability to text with contacts.

No ability to send Preset messages from app. I have an InReach Mini device. I don’t understand why I cannot send a Preset message (not a Quick message which counts against text message allotment). It seems like a basic feature they have intentionally omitted. I often keep my InReach strapped to my backpack for a clear view of the sky and so it is not easy to reach. Luckily I have a Garmin Fenix 5x watch which I connect to the InReach and can send Preset messages via the watch. Hopefully Garmin doesn’t read this and take away my ability to do that!

Unreliable at best.... Ultimately I purchased the InReach unit because of its ability to connect with my phone for added functionality. After 1 year of use I can say I am near ready to throw this unit out the window due to the unreliable connectivity to my iPhone. Countless times while on the trail I have grabbed my phone to check or send messages only to find that the Earthmate app is no longer connected to my InReach. To correct, I need to grab my InReach turn Bluetooth off then back on again to re-establish connectivity. Bluetooth settings on phone shows I am connected, and same with the InReach. However the earthmate app does not seem to know what is going on. Sometimes I have connectivity for a long period of time, sometimes it immediately drops. This is a major selling point of this unit, and thus far it is a major fail in my opinion. Tried all the troubleshooting advice from tech support with no luck. I would advise to stay away until Garmin fixes this issue.

Great for messages, but map downloads don’t work on iPhone 13. Tried reinstalling.. I spent the past hour trying to download maps and still at 0% progress. I tried turning off Wi-Fi, reinstalling the app, trying a different Wi-Fi, etc. nothing worked. Good thing I have GAIA for navigation.

Font size too small, no user adjustability. I really like how the Topo maps appear and would love to try navigating with this app, but I simply can’t read the labels like street names. They remain the same tiny size regardless of zoom level and I just cannot make them out easily. There needs to be a USER adjustable font size. I am using this on an iPad Mini 4, maybe on another device they might show up better. I complained to Garmin a year ago, they blew me off then and I still can’t use it. Gaia is a a way better nav app, especially the Pro version with layers. This one is simply garbage for me and will be deleted.

Unreliable Bluetooth connection. The Bluetooth connection to the InReach device is dropped by the app, not the phone, very frequently. Typically a connection is maintained for less than 1 hour. Sometimes less than 15 minutes. Best workaround so far is to turn Bluetooth on the phone off and on periodically and before sending a text. The problem with this is that it sometimes results in duplicate messages being sent. That can get expensive. Also, turning Bluetooth off and on is a bad hack at best. I reported this problem to Garmin several times. Most recently 3 months ago. They almost seem to be taking it seriously this time, but no real progress. No useful suggestions from Garmin. I think this is a stop-ship bug. They seem to see it is a way to increase revenue by charging for duplicate messages. I have met many other InReach users experiencing the same problem. None had any good ideas for a work around. This problem has been consistent for me across two iPhones and several releases of iOS. I doubt it is any of user error, my phone or iOS.

Not bad - some sync issues.. Had some issues with the app saying the inReach device is not activated, even though it definitely is as I could send and receive test messages. Had to delete the app and reinstall to fix that one. Also had one crash when hitting messages before un/re-installing the app.

Confusing setup required. Not sure if there was a bug in the setup process, or I did something wrong. In any case, I could not work out how to connect my phone to the device. It seemed way too complicated. Using the device without the app.

Does the job.. This programme is required to enable the more sophisticated functions of the inReach satellite communicator. With Earthmate installed and the inReach paired (Bluetooth) it becomes possible to send and receive SMS in areas where there is no cell phone network. Intuitive interface. Maps for free that can be downloaded for areas that you intend to go are stored on the phone for access when beyond the network. In brief; costs nothing, does the job.

Unreliable syncing, Australian maps poor. DOES NOT RELIABLY SYNC WITH WEBSITE The website is deliberately designed to make it hard to get support. Sometimes the sync between the website and the app doesn’t work and there is absolutely no support you can get. Even though the Garmin mini is a great device, I’ve stopped recommending it to people due to the difficulty getting customer service.

Poor service again. Most unreliable and takes a long time to get service to load up. As I work in very remote areas and most of the time several kms from each other when we do join up every 6weeks then this is totally a waste of time and money as I can’t depend on it with any confidence at all. Relying on this solely could quite easily result in my death. Suggest look at other options before you even consider this.

Looses all settings when it is closed on iPhone. Loses units, login, everything else every time I close the application. This is a total disaster. I’m still paired with the device, but have to log in again every time I use it. This is a hazard. If I go back and forth between my password manager while copying the email address and password, it loses the fields when I come back from my password manager. Useless!!! All my software is up-to-date. Happens with no other applications.

Not ready for production. There are a number of issues with this app that demonstrate a lack of testing. These issues have peristed for years now. I would give it 4 stars if they fix the problem of the display sleeping while navigating.

Fundamental syncing issues. Between issues with being able to login at all for extended periods, there’s major issues with this app’s ability to actually mirror the InReach website. Tracking points and whole tracks fail to synchronise rendering the app really only useful for messaging. Also, the newly added dark mode support actively obscures a significant amount of text within the app when enabled.

Marine weather has basic flaws. Marine weather has basic flaws. If you select 4am, it highlites the wrong day. It does not highlife the night as it should, it highlites that day. It is ok if you realise it is a fault in the display but it is a bit disappointing. Also, the current is totally wrong. For instance it may show a current of 17 knots. I’m not sure where the information is coming from but it looks like a decimal point is missing.

Keeps me connected. I've used on numerous mountaineering, heliboarding, hiking, camping and hunting trips to track my route, update my website and communicate with loved ones. Paired with an InReach device it gives me the right level of "contactableness" and a backup access to SAR should the worst case scenario happen. Basically I don't go in the back country without it.

InReachCanada. This app worked great with iPhone 4 & 5 models. Easily access all your contacts on your phone from Earthmate software. Map program is not suitable for mountain navigation but provides usefull place names and route tracking options.

Complete letdown. Ive had this app for 2 years now and its an embarrassment to Garmin i chose the inreach mini specifically to use with my phone an ipad but its a complete joke there is ZERO back road maps they are insanely slow to just update this app and after 2 years they have expanded its capabilities zero percent ya texting works but i was hoping to have more then a fancy txting device considering Garmins background they have forced me too seek out other apps for mapping the whole situation seems completely ridiculous considering where technology is now days.

Works fine, features requested. The Bluetooth sync is awesome. Most features work fine. Wishlist: 1- Hide old tracks in app (like on the device)! Like past 24 h, etc. 2- Bug: The account always logs out in the latest version of the app. Was not doing that before. 3- Can't figure out how to switch between map types!!! Same problem on the device. More info in the doc and better interface needed.

No aerial maps available for download. Disappointed. Only the most basic topo map is available in this app for my area. I would need the Aerial or at least hybrid of some kind showing trails and cut lines for this to be useful

Glitch in dark mode. When the iphone is in dark mode note able to see the text I write in message. Needed to remove from dark mode to see what I write

Must have for Inreach. Earthmate for iPhone has worked very well overall. Have used it over 5 days off road motorcycling with no cell service and still communicated with home texting up to 30 times a day. Won't be without my Inreach or earthmate. As far as I'm concerned the only way to go.

Good, but needs more. Decent app that works ok. Lacks some additional functionality that would make it five stars. Adding compatibility with Apple Watch would be massive. This would allow control without having g to remove the garmin or phone from a pocket. It would be also able to provide fitness tracking (heart rate, etc). Having a map on the watch for route finding would be fantastic.

Awesome!!. We used the Earthmate app for 4 months while traveling through 37 countries on our trip to and from Mongolia, crossing deserts and mountain ranges. Thanks to Earthmate and the InReach Explorer device we managed to successfully locate some of the most remotes and amazing areas we were headed to (not findable on regular maps), keep track of our progress and route, as well as keep in touch with our family and friends. The app allows you to send direct messages , and update you social media from anywhere in the world. I highly recommend the Earthmate app to anyone!! Definitely will us it again in a future expedition! Corinne- team Offtrax

Earthmate. Clumsy & poor as a navigation aid.

Preset message a huge missing function. Definitely could use some refinement but can’t understand how preset messages aren’t possible via the app?

Great Product. I've been using this app with the inReach SE. Works very well. It would be nice to see the web setup and account maintenance integrated into the app so everything is in one place and sync automatically. I can only get the device to pair to one device at a time and your have to tell the device to forget the previous pair to pair with a new device. The SMS is what I bought this for and it works well.

Garbage App. This App is Garbage. It crashed my iPad since installation.Do not buy it

Easy to Use w/ tons of information. Super easy to connect to InReach device thru Earthmate. Downloadable maps for everywhere, including the middle of nowhere Mongolia. Really appreciated knowing how much further a destination was when there was no road signage. Elevation indicator was cool, especially travelling in the mountains and below sea level. Its GPS in an app!

35 countries thank you Earhtmate. So nice to keep our 1000’s of followers aware of where we were as we crossed 35 countries as we did the Mongolian charity rally from London England to UB Mongolia. www.OffTrax.ca Texting to family and friends in the middle of nowhere in a Stan country , PRICELESS

App is pathetically outdated. Garmin does not care about creating safety related products. If so, they would do more than the bare minimum which is this app

Maps have little detail beyond contours. Functionally, the app seems to work fine with my Inreach. Maps however are practically devoid of information beyond the contours. Ideally all zoom ranges should be plastered with known and common names of mountains, streams, roads, things. That's how us humans relate to a place. Earthmate maps make me feel a bit lost. Especially as forest/ barren shading is also wildly off.

Garbage, isn’t optimized for iPhone X. Garbage

Poor maps - Bluetooth not reliable. I have an Inreach Explorer +. The device performance is as advertised, and I’m satisfied. However, the Iphone app EARTHMATE is not reliable for communication between my Iphone 7 and my Explorer+. After several months of testing the app, I can say that coupling works only once out of ten trials. Topographic maps are also for all practical purpose not usable. I use the device in northern Quebec. Small lakes and pounds are not visible on the map. I still have to carry my old Garmin GPS with good Topographic maps on excursions, and use the Explorer+ only for satellite communication purpose. Unless better maps are available in the future, I do not recommend the Explorer+. The basic Explorer (yellow body) or the Inreach Mini will do the same functions, without the maps, that are anyway not usable for serious users.

Numerous ongoing issues. I have had several different Inreach and they mostly work but are time consuming with endless technical glitches that consume your time.

Great other than wind speed in knots. App works well with my inReach Mini. Please provide an option to choose how windspeed is displayed in this app. It is displaying in knots as opposed to miles or kilometres per hour. When I view the windspeed on the inReach device itself it properly shows kilometres or miles per hour for windspeed.

No Aerial Maps for Canada. Garmin advertises the app and inreach to have the ability to download Aerial maps. This is not the case for Canada. False advertising if you ask me

Dark mode... seriously. For the price we pay for the monthly subscription, I would expect minimum testing of the app on iOS 13 in dark mode. First, the login prompt is white text on white background. Second, try to read your message on the map. Again white text on white background. The inReach service is useful but this app is really bad. Also devs should add support for the Apple Watch. This is a good use case where you want to check messages without having to use the phone or go on the device itself. This app deserves more love from the devs.

Gil. The topo map is pretty much useless

Pretty good - one glitch. I just got an inReach mini and am getting used to it. So far I like the app but I found one glitch. When I go to download by region, there is no NEXT button. In fact, there is one, but it is invisible in the top right corner. Other than that I am pretty happy with it.

Less functionality with v2.0. V2.0 of this app can no longer post messages to Facebook.

Maps need improving. Love the capabilities of the Delorme inreach. But the maps in the app are useless. There needs to be a true topo map or integrated into google maps. The ones on the app are brutal and waste of time

Jeff. The Earthmate app keeps telling me I don’t have an active subscription but doesn’t allow me to set on up…igor633333

Please make this CarPlay compatible. This app works well, would be 5 star with CarPlay support. The ability to have offline maps is a huge+, without car play this app is 3 star.

Map issue. I am currently unable to view the map, the app is up to date

Position. I can’t send the position when I send a message with the app. But if I use the Inreach itself I can.

Preset messages. Don't understand why preset messages can't be edited and sent via this app. Ideally, I hope this app can do thinks the same with via the web.

Almost perfect backcountry mapping app. I used this on a road trip through Western Canada and in the Northern Yukon this summer and with a few exceptions in remote areas, the downloadable maps are sufficient. It works well with the Garmin Explorer+. Sometimes the Bluetooth connection dropped and required a restart of the iPad or switching BT on and off. Best feature I found is the messaging. Sending 160 character messages from the remotest places are great. Also the weather forecasts. I wished there would be a support page for the app for suggestions. I'd like to see a thin cross marker on mapping page center, for more accurate waypoint marking. I'd like to see movable waypoint markers too. The Open Street Maps are okay, but often not detailed enough in remote areas, or even accurate. For Canada I'd like to be able to download the Toporama maps. Also please add a distance measuring option that can measure finger movement along a planned trail or road section. Other than that, a very good mapping and navigation app.

Text unreadable in dark mode. It’s impossible to write a message in dark mode because the text is the same color as the background

Inreach mini connection trick. Put the device and app in pairing. If no devices show up in the app then go to your iPhone’s Settings->Bluetooth and select the inreach from the new devices at the bottom. Garmin please update this app.

Don’t waste your money. Sadly I must advise you to not waste your time or money. The inreach is no better than a cell phone.

No notifications. I can’t believe that a message app provides no notification upon receiving a message.

Bare minimum app and no more. Garmin doing the bare minimum here. Dated app with no widget or watch complication.

Dark mode issues. Message previews are white on white and invisible when typing on iOS 13 when dark mode is enabled.

Update to review. This app is very useful on the trail and tracking issues seem to be resolving. Please consider adding accumulated elevation gain as a tracking data field, perhaps in place of Speed Max.

GPS portion of app is terrible. I tried to import my waypoints from my Garmin Oregon. First the import end with a unhelpful error message. At some point I was able to import some of my waypoints. The names were replaced by numbers and the symbols were lost. This app is no way near the quality I expect from Garmin

Someone call my wife!. Perpetual internal server errors preventing logon and sync to InReach mini. Prevented from updating contacts. Horrible GUI. Someone please call my wife to identify my body!

Meh. For the amount of money I paid for a garmin inreach it is actually appalling how bad this app is.

Garbage app. I’ve had an InReach device for years, and it works reliably. The app, on the other hand, does not. It hasn’t been updated since before Garmin bought Delorme, and supposedly core functions – like the map – simply don’t work at all. The map is just completely blank. Now, the Earthmate map was frankly never any good anyway, but it’s generally better when this stuff works. For basic messaging, the app still functions, thank goodness. For mapping, use Gaia or CalTopo instead.

Needs a total rewrite. Garmin needs a high school geek kid to rewrite this app and make it easy to use. This is about as difficult as it comes.

Using parcel data for hunting. App would be almost as good as onX hunt if the parcel data was complete. If you live in Northern California beware there is almost no parcel data. I also could not find a way to determine if an area is covered. Guess you have to call to find out.

Poor app. I like my garmin mini, but this app is trash. As others have said, the map cannot be erased at all. Now that I’ve done a bunch of hikes it looks like someone has scribbled all over it. There also is no way to actually PLAN a trip with this app:(

Imagery out of date. The satellite images for where I live do not show changes I made over five years ago. This includes roads, driveways and new construction. This clunky app is due for a serious upgrade.

Cannot connect to Inreach Mini. I have a Garmin Inreach Mini but it cannot connect to my IPhone when I pull up the connection page on the app no devices appear on the list even when my in reach mini is in paring mode

Kind of sort of almost there. (this review is about version 2.7.0) Recent updates that grossly reduce usability of the app: – New, green theme reduces contrast and makes it difficult to read the white text. – The developer thought it was a good idea to remove the zoom in/zoom out buttons on the map page, which means the app no longer can be used with one hand. Their time would be better invested adding features like being able to send a preset message from the app.

Sad. Being a Delorme product user for decades, it pains me to have to write this. This app is really useless. Delorme maps have always been the best, and being able to have their nice, topo maps on a mobile device is great, but other than having the maps, there is little else that is useful that you can do with them. If you are wanting a full-featured app that can compute routes via road or trail for you, this won't do it. Shockingly stupid. Best you can do is make a route yourself by clickity clicking mouse bread crumb droppings along a route that you, yourself, have to come up with. You can not search for towns, addresses, points of interest either on your mobile device or on the web portal. Useless. The only apparent value this might have is if you have an inReach satellite device, so others can see where you are. This has such limited functionality, I thought I was doing something wrong, so I called the Garmin (who apparently bought Delorme) support line. There is no menu option for help with this app, and a woman I finally connected to didn't even know what Delorme was! I then called Delorme directly and someone there confirmed that this app will not auto-route. nor can you search for points of interest, etc. Other than the maps, this thing would be useless even as a free app, but I stupidly paid for it.

Letters invisible in iOS 13 Dark Mode. Letters are invisible when typing messages in iOS 13.2. Otherwise, the app is great!

User unfriendly billing process.. The app works well but their billing system is not user friendly. They have an auto pay system where they make it difficult to cancel or suspend service.

Please Give Us te Explore App Features. Can’t search the map for an address. Can’t share a waypoint either inreach or text. Can’t see collections, edit and add to them. Need a lot of updates that are similar to explore app or just have the explore app work with ALL inreach devices.... So frustrating....

Cannot Delete Tracks. This app is in no way intuitive. I am having trouble deleting tracks. I was told by Garmin support that there are bugs still needing to be worked out. The support person told me to delete and reinstall the app. This should not happen.

Would be great with Apple Watch companion app. It would be great to have an Apple Watch companion app and complication. Overall the app has been great, but I find myself checking my watch for elevation when on a hike, would be great to see it there soon!

Seems to work fine but..... Text is incompatible w dark mode as can’t see what you’re typing.

In reach good, app bad. Garmin has dropped the ball with Earthmate app. The gps data is accurate but the functionality of the app is horrible. Using it to plan routes or find directions is useless. The maps don’t have required detail for boundary lines or names. It’s just really janky, especially for a $20 per month subscription service.

iPhone X. Please add support for iPhone X full screen.

terrible app and ui. i could not find how to create a new route

Crappy. Signed up and won’t let me sign in. Useless and waste of time.

Crap app!. I have used the Delorme (now Garmin) inReach for a few years now and while the satellite texting service has got more expensive it has also become much worse. Random thought from my mate, Larry, who I talked into buying one ($495); I'm surprised it's still on the boat. Meaning he has thought about throwing it over the side several times each day because of the problems he was having with it. In my own case, I have an 3 year old unit and have made sure I've kept the software and firmware updated. The software has become ever more buggy taking forever or several tries to load or locking up my iPad forcing a restart, until on the way South while I was offshore and really needed the unlimited texting I was paying $67 a month for, it quit loading entirely. I went through the entire litany of tricks I had used to get the software to reload; restarting my iPad several times, turning it off then back on a few times, making sure no other apps were running, making sure other apps were running, waiting for it to load in the back ground, turning the inReach off and on, etc, etc. The app was constantly crashing, not only itself but often my iPad as well. Now it doesn't even load! Crap app! Neither Larry, nor I would ever recommend this device to anyone. Before Garmin bought deLorme, you could call them and speak to a person who would help you with any problems or question you might have with your device. Do you think it's remotely possible that Garmin would even respond to a tech support email or text? Ha! Garmin has screwed up a perfectly good and very useful device that I had recommended to every offshore sailor. No longer! What a piece of crap Garmin has turned it into. I don't think it's a coincidence that two of us with a new unit and a 3 year old unit both have had to exert considerable self control not to give our expensive little units the float test. My advice would be to go with the Spot Messenger if you want to send and receive satellite texts.

Awful. I cannot believe how disjointed and confusing this app is. The Help section is useless. The interaction between this app and InReach is doubly confusing. I don’t know what else to say. I use another app called InRoute that has it’s problems, but it’s elegant and very practical compared to this crap.

Can be so much more!. Need an Apple Watch app too. Sometimes I use my Garmin watch and sometimes my Apple Watch.

Import tracks from Garmin Explore website. Please offer an update that would allow “track lines” with waypoints when importing from the Explore website. When converting the track lines to “routes” it slims the info and cuts off way too much of the route.

A+++++. Does what it’s supposed to do! Love it!

Criminally bad.. This company should be held accountable for their terrible products and services. People’s lives are at stake and they don’t care that their products and software don’t work at all. I would never in my life but a Garmin product again.

Autolock?. App works pretty well but I can’t believe it doesn’t override the iOS autolock function like every other map app. That would be a huge improvement!

Update looses saved content. App automatically upgraded and now is not paired with my InReach Mini and has lost all my saved messages, tracks, waypoints etc. #1 rule in app development: don’t loose users data. Nothing else matters. Garmin Earthmate == fail.

Help no longer visible under help tab.. Options>help no information is visible. Thanks.

Shows all old routes all the time. As usual garmin has lousy software, so annoying to have this expensive device be so stupid as to show all the routes from the last 4 years on here at once because I am sure everyone wants that

Sending to the WRONG contacts. I used to love this app and my inreach but on my last trip I sent three messages to my wife and somehow the messages sent to my father even though it showed that it went to her. That’s scary because my dad doesn’t check his phone and lives 3K miles away! So my wife was worried about me. Totally makes this useless.

Requires some additional account. Impossible to run app without having some additional account.

Location button does not work. Location button does not work on my iPhone 11 Pro on the Earthmate app. Secondly, the inbox window blocks the map and will not get out of my way so I can see the map screen.

Almost perfect. Very useful, I wish the app were compatible with Carplay. I love the offline map option, very useful for the inReach mini.

Needs iPhone X support. Title says it all. Needs iPhone X support. But it seems to work. Just download your maps prior to going out.

Maps and tracking are worthless. Zoom and orientation on tracks is broken. Why no updates in six months?

No iPhone X Support. Lacking iPhone X support almost a year after the X was released. Graphics and UI are out of date. Other then that the app functions just isn’t very good looking or use all the potential screen real estate.

IJustine. IJustine Licea this app!

Doesn’t work. Device paired to phone, subscription extorted, drive and explore apps working. Zumo xt paired as well. This app won’t recognize pairing and says I have no account. Verified this is a big fail. Waste of time.

Map Legends. I couldn’t believe Garmin does not include legends for their maps. Unusable maps. Zero stars

Missed messages. Messages seem to send from the app no problem but I’ve missed messages a few times since they don’t always seem to sync from the inreach to the app and are only available on the inreach.

No more Earthmate Hunt. No parcel data available like was in the old Earthmate Hunt app. Basically useless for private land.
