WordReference Dictionary Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Astonishingly Good. These are astonishingly good for free dictionaries. I consult them first and find what I’m looking for 95% of the time. In the remaining 5% of cases I revert to more expensive, purchased, dictionaries such as the Duden, but I can read news and most novels just using Word Reference.

Glitchy. Your app did not allow me to submit a direct contact note about this. I have used this app for many years, and it has been wonderful. However, for the last few weeks, the app often will not work at all on my iPhone 12, which is updated . I type in words, and I get nothing.

Excellent Learning Tool. Using this app to look-up unfamiliar words while learning another language is very helpful. Since it provides definitions and synonyms in the target language (rather than English), it helps me to actually learn the word, rather than just translating it. The pronunciation feature is a bonus.

Was great, now broken - please fix!. As someone who speaks a few languages, this app was a tremendous resource. I didn’t have to have a separate dictionary app for each language I was interested in. Having access to the forum threads for a given word was incredibly helpful. Yet at some point in the last few weeks (as of early 2023) the app no longer returns search results. It looks like the developer hasn’t published an app update in five months, so I’m guessing it’s no longer compatible with my current mobile OS.

My favorite app. This is the app I use the most, it’s tremendously resourceful and I find it very amusing to go on the forums. It’s true that it requieres a good connection, I’d love to be able to download the dictionaries. Thanks to the people that participate on this website!

Best Spanish-English app I've used. I study Spanish as my college major (and as a non-native speaker) and am very happy with this app and have used it for years. It is a quick reference for when I come across an unfamiliar word, especially for trivial, random vocab that varies between Hispanic countries. I'm glad that it shows multiple possible translations for words as they often depend on context, as well as example sentences for them. If you are looking to learn verb conjugations however, (as I am not) I would look for another app to download to have on your phone along with this one such as Spanish Dict. I love that on this app slang and dialect-specific words can easily be searched on online forums by another few clicks, this is especially helpful in understand Mexican conversation which is heavy in words you wouldn't find in a standard Spanish dictionary. Some are even in the dictionary and include the country of origin, which is very helpful for me. I will soon be a graduate student to teach Spanish in the near future and write this review only to express my gratitude. Creators, please keep up the great work expanding and perfecting this impressive pocket dictionary. 5 stars. Gracias por su ayuda en mis estudios

WordRefrence Itself Gets 7 Stars. The dictionary—the way it is always in progress and professionally moderated—the large and hungry board community, make it almost the only tool you need for learning. It is missing an aspect however, as it provides no way for us to take what it showed us and put it in long-term memory. They main website at least has the lists area, even though it still provides no way to drill those words other than clicking through the list. They could enable exporting to .xml which you can import to Quizlet and Anki. It’s up to them to figure out how people can choose the definitions that they want to study. I am also giving them a lower score for their design that hasn’t been updated since the 90s. It would be cool if they let the community vote on it.

Great app, just needs to be updated regularly.. I found out about WordReference in my foreign language classes in college; even my most honored professors rely on it, and I use it very frequently too. It is accurate and covers a vast vernacular, but it would be great if the app would be updated to work properly. As of now, I can select which dictionary to use, but the results won’t pull up. I get a crash notification saying there was an error. I just recently updated my iOS to the new 12 version, so maybe that has something to do with it. I’m not able to afford the newest iPhone every time it releases. I hope a new update fixes this issue soon, as I would really like to continue using it.

Wonderful app, especially for students!. I’m a student in French, and I’ve been using Word Reference for the past 3 years. It is so helpful. You can fine the word in the other language, see the plurality, the gender, and an example sentence in both English and the other language. Word Reference has a big variety of languages, and you can switch between them. Overall, I’d say this app is definitely worth getting if you’re learning a new language. The best part— it’s free! You don’t have to pay anything, which is very good to know.

Obliterated by ads. I have been using this app for several years and have recommended it to dozens of people in our language classes. It is still the best dual language dictionary, but for several months now it is plagued by an insistent banner ad that covers the top part of the definition. The ad cannot be removed without going through several steps, supplying a reaction ("inappropriate", "already bought it", etc.) and then waiting for it to fade slowly into the background. The system does not learn from user feed back. I bought the ad-free version a few years back and enjoyed it. That version was cancelled, and now we're back to a cluttered interface that is so greedy to interrupt one's experience that it ruins an otherwise great program. I'm now recommending other good programs to our students.

Just plain not working. Is this service down completely? Can’t reach on web either.

Website is the Best but….ñ.. The interface is just clunky. But that’s a good thing, makes you even more appreciative to get the goody. Fantastic resource.

Bad. Wish I could give this a good rating but app is way to janky and often doesn’t work with looking at verb conjugations. I’ll give it a good rating when I don’t have to google 50% of the verb conjugations.

Horrible new update killed the app. Your new update has removed the ability to search the forums and threads... What gives ? That is one of the most useful features of wordreference and now I am obligated to open up the original website on my browser and use that instead. the app is now simply a very limited dictionary app, which I may not even both to open since I already have an excellent dictionary downloaded on my phone. There are additional annoyances appearing with this update, and the worst is the inability to tap any word on the screen to go to that word's definition page. Again, why would you remove the very features that made that had made this a powerful, intuitive, intelligent, and robust tool? LAME and for language learners who have lived and sworn by this app... TRAGIC.

Awesome site, awesome app. The WordReference website has constantly proven itself to be an invaluable resource in my academic pursuits of foreign languages, and I was extremely pleased to discover that the mobile app offers the same capabilities. The user interface works well for mobile browsing, and I love still being able to easily check the forum and view the conjugation of any given verb. Overall, incredible app and perfect for doing homework without needing my laptop constantly open to the WordRef site. Glad I discovered this application. :)

Best dictionary; a few defects. Best dictionary on the web for English - Spanish! notable defects: (1) - it’s extremely difficult to copy text (to paste in another app). You can select the text, but it’s almost impossible to see which text you’ve highlighted. This is because the highlighting is almost invisible/ fully transparent (not shaded like in every other app). So when you click “copy,” you may or may not be copying what you hope to copy. (2) - it’s difficult to make a definition a “favorite” so you can look it up later. You can add a yellow star, but it’s almost impossible to distinguish the faint yellow of the star with the white background, so you won’t really know if you’ve starred it unless you have amazing vision. Also, if you click on a link within a definition (eg to see another definition), the app will take you quickly to that other definition, but you won’t be able to add a star to it. To add a star, you have to manually re-type the word again to look it up again, and only then will you be able to add the star (which is almost invisible anyway - see above). (3) you can’t export your favorites, assuming you succeed in making them (see above).

App not working. I have not been able to get this app to work in quite some time. Please fix it.

Add ⭐️ feature to the side of all words…. to more easily key these words in to favorites. Otherwise one has to type out words to star them to favorites at the search bar. Good reference points!

Did not help. L app

Very good. Excellent app for translation of Spanish words. Works very well even for more obscure words

Unparalleled Resource. For deep lovers of language, this app has no peer

Phrases. The app should be developed to tackle phrases up front. As it exists, if you put on a phrase, in focuses on exclusively one word and as you dig through, you might reach your phrase in the diction or the forums. You should be able to connect sooner with your meaning.

Do NOT update. I love WR & I use it on a daily basis. The latest update is COMPLETELY non-functioning. Not just slow or inconvenient (although even it worked, that would still be true). I mean it literally is broken. I typed in a word & hit search & timed it with a stop watch. After 45 seconds of doing nothing, it finally pulled up the search suggestions, and it didn’t even take me to the definition until I clicked on the word in the suggestions. It’s a radical redesign from the previous version, it has a new layout that is more app-ish. I’m sure (at least, I hope) they’re still working on it will be drastically improved with future updates. But all the same, what were you thinking, app designers? This thing isn’t ready for the app store. It’s not even ready for beta testing. This isn’t just a few glitches here and there, it LITERALLY DOESN’T WORK. I’m very disappointed.

Fantastic app. I use it for English - Greek. I really like all the different meanings presented for words, plus phrases. That helps me very quickly learn how to use a new word. The only downside is it seems the app doesn't save the dictionary offline. There are some regions that I travel to that don't have good signal, it would be great to have an offline version for when there's no network. Otherwise I much prefer using this over Google translate -- they don't give such in depth explanation and options for individual words.

Has potential. I’m confused why each translation of a word doesn’t provide an example sentence and translation. Many times it only shows the example sentence in English. How is this supposed to help me if I can’t to see the word in context in the other language? Sometimes there’s no example sentence at all. It also doesn’t have pronunciation options for my target language, only for English. Why not add pronunciation for every language? The design is also not the most user friendly, and it’s buggy and crashes somewhat frequently. I would love to see some updates, or if someone could explain if I’m missing something about why there aren’t always example sentence translations.

I paid for the full version and still I have commercials. How can you help me to rid of those annoying commercials? Thanks

Not working recently??. Has anybody else been having issues on the computer and app?

The GOAT. Word Reference has been such an amazing tool for me for almost 15 years now. The people who run this website should run the government as far as I’m concerned. I never review apps, but I’m making an exception because there are few things that are purely good in the world and this tool is one of them. I can’t speak to all the languages they include, but it has been one of the most useful tools for me when learning Spanish and French and I plan to consult it as long as the site exists.

Bugaboo. This app is as buggy as the day is long. Use the website version on your mobile device

I love this app!. I’ve been using word reference for over a decade. I love searching a word, and getting lost in all the idioms and phrases related to a word. This is my #1 reference while learning any language. I primarily use it for French and Spanish, but have dabble in many language’s through my life

Invaluable tool. I love how easy this app makes it to hop between languages, and how often idioms are covered in forum links. I’ve never found a better lexicon for my phone.

The information is excellent. The app is frustrating. I used this for Spanish and it has been extremely useful in figuring out the little nuances in word choice, where the same word can be wildly different things in the various Latin American countries and Spain. I Literally it helps even to navigate discussion about emotions in a cross-cultural relationship where not every feeling translates 1:1. I just wish the app was better. It crashes, if I click on one word from the definition I can't just swipe back to the last page, I have to start the search all over again each time. And, there is no option to download sections for offline use. This would be really helpful when you're traveling abroad and data is spotty. For this, I recommend Linguee. Also, if you're looking for more examples of the word in a sentence, that Linguee app basically pulls the context for J le a word gets used in real articles online.

Doesn’t Work. Downloaded. Doesn’t work tried a couple of words definitions. No response. Doesn’t work.

Excellent app. I almost never write reviews, but Word Reference is such a wonderful app that I thought I’d write this little blurb. I’ve used WR for years. It’s like having a language course on your phone. I’m primarily focused on Spanish (although as of this writing I count 15 language dictionaries that are included in the app). You can look up words and have them translated with multiple meanings and subtleties included - even short phrases and expressions that include the word. Perhaps best of all is that you can tap a little arrow next to verbs and complete conjugation of the verb will be provided - everything from the indicative to the past present subjunctive and negative imperative. Good for us language nerds who actually strive to use the correct grammar and hope to some day be truly fluent in a language. The designers of this app are real scholars who have done an enormous amount of work. Thank you to them.

Love this app. Used Word Reference for over a decade for French-English and English-French translation and conjugation. I love this app.

Until the new update.... I have always used word reference to help me with Spanish class. The explanations of when to use each word is very useful! However there are a few things that could be done better. One, maybe explain how the meaning of a word changes when used in different tenses, for example words have different meanings when in preterite vs imperfect. There are three huge things that are very IRRITATING with the new update. •The stupid banner that runs across the bottom shrinks the screen size greatly. •When you switch from Spanish to English and English to Spanish, the word you have entered in the search bar disappears. This causes you to have to retype it. •There used to be a forward and a backward button. Now there is only a backward one. If you are trying to switch off between the definitions of two words, you now have to re-type it in, and you can't press a forward button. Other than that, the app is really amazing, and I would recommend as the best translator around. Just please fix those problems, and it will be easily 5 stars!

Doesn't Work After Update. Before I updated the app, it was perfect. It let me do what I needed to do, translate words. But now after updating to the "new design", it keeps telling me that I need to be connected to the internet to use the app. I've tried using multiple different networks, which includes my LTE, but it still keeps telling me the same thing. When I hit retry, it goes away until I type just one letter into the search bar, then it just pops up again telling me to get on a network. Again, it does this for every. Single. Letter. And it gets so annoying. I can see the app working since it gives me results after each letter I type behind the alert, but it's making things so unnecessarily slow. I'd really appreciate it if this problem were fixed.

Spanish teacher/ native English speaker. I love Wordreference! It has only improved over the years. I care about the nuance and etymology of words, and I find that here. Whenever I have any questions, doubts, or need for clarification even on the most nuanced meanings of words, I find the answers here or in the forums. Reverse look-up is a great feature, as is full verb conjugation with irregularities highlighted. I have never waited very long for a reply to a question in the forums. The only reason for me to have any other dictionary is for a moment when I am without wifi, otherwise it's Wordreference every time. I also ask my students to install it.

Download. I love this app; the issue is, I can be frequently without cell signal for days or possibly weeks at a time. This app requires internet to work, I would love if there was a way to download the French-English/English-French dictionaries or the French verbs portion. It would allow me to use this app to great effect when away from the internet.

Excellent. An excellent online dictionary. Not just a translator, it gives the context and various uses of words, just as the best bilingual dictionaries do.

Outstanding, esp. for grammarians. This app is LOADED with information. It is an English dictionary in its own right, along with translations, including parts of speech and pronunciation, both written symbolically as well as recorded for playback out loud. Furthermore, it has synonyms and complete conjugations of verbs in the selected language (very useful in French!). My favorite part is the sample sentences in both English and the foreign language, to demonstrate the various senses of a word. I can’t recommend this app enough for the “word nerd“.

Bad update. The app was otherwise perfect before this latest update. I use the app pretty much everyday, so it has really come to be an inconvenience. Now the app opens to a list of all available language options which is silly since it's rather unnecessary. I would imagine most would be using the app for one or two preferred languages, so the current system adds a needless step to the mix. Most annoyingly, however, the search engine no longer allows me to research more than one word which is just simply ridiculous. I most often use the app to do a quick search for phrases and expressions (for which WR is an excellent source especially with its forums) but now I am forced to go online to search for anything more than just one word. They would do well to resolve these issues since at the moment using the web is actually less of a hassle.

Not Functioning. As a language teacher, I’ve recommended WordReference to my students throughout the years as the best option for translation. This is still true for the website, but the app is simply broken. After entering a word to be translated, nothing shows up. Before writing this review I tried to report a the problem through the link in the app and it didn’t function. Please fix this great app’

Professional, but without German. For years now, I've used wordreference's website and app for nearly all of my translating needs. It's fast and reliable, and it allows me many ways to understand the different connotations and meanings of a word or phrase. I would give this app five stars for giving me everything I need and more - but I need German too! I don't know why wordreference has some strange aversion to German; the language is offered on the website, but it has much less support than, say, French, and it's not on any of the wordreference apps. My life would be much easier if German was offered here and I didn't have to resort to the (often inaccurate or vague) Google Translate app.

Better than expected. See I was just busy going to Wordreference on Safari on my phone and got bored of typing in that link fifteen times a day. So I checked if there were an app, and no disappointment there! I downloaded it and it worked faster and more efficently than expected. I really liked how I can type in one word and switch from panel to panel with ease, giving you examples of word usage and conjugations. Thank you for this amazing app :) I don't usually write long reviews (or any), but this one deserved it. **note: please add German and fix the error that when you type in a word with a spelling mistake, and correct it using your site, we don't encounter the error that the original word is a mistake.

Long time web user disappointed. WordReference has had an excellent website for years. I'd gladly pay for an app that even reflected the approach used in that web design and content. While I realize an app can't do everything a desktop can, we have come a long way. Some things about this are just not even intuitive. Like if I want to translate the English of "where" to the Russian of the word, I can see it... But the listen function plays the audio of how to pronounce only the English. Users are going back and forth presumably to gain knowledge of another language so there should be an easy way to link to the one you are looking up and hear it. I need this and can't make it work. Hopefully that's just me being inept. I really loved the website for years and would like a more robust and functionally suitable app. I'd pay for it.

Doesn’t allow me to see definitions. The app doesn’t allow me to see the definitions of words that I type into the search bar. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app multiple times, but it still doesn’t show word definitions. Please fix this bug!

Satisfaction. I suppose that’s one of the best dictionaries that I’ve been using. I’m using it for learning French and I’m totally satisfied.

Best French Dictionary App But …. It crashes often. Sad.

Hebrew language is missing, any possibility of adding Hebrew?. Other than that is very good

One little thing. This app has the awesome dictionaries of word reference available right at your fingertips, the only improvement I want to see is to have this app work offline like many other awesome dictionary apps. Otherwise you may as well be using the website version instead.

Needs dark mode. would be better with dark mode capabilities

Hi. Who is using this for school. Sub to - A N T H - if it’s a yes. Road to 100 subs.

Fresh. The new interface has really improved this app. It seems faster and more responsive, so far. The great thing about it is that sometimes this dictionary finds words that not even my Collins Unabridged Dictionary app does. There have been many times that the opposite occurs but if I know an obscure compound word isn't in one, it tends to be in the other.

Best dictionary ever. Speaking as a French

Slow. The dictionary itself is beyond reproach. It is an amazing resource. But why is the app sooooo slow?! The website is always fast and it can't be loading more than a few bytes of data per search. It's extremely frustrating!!

Ups & Downs. Well, well, now we are talking! Take dat back.Ta

Fantastic but one flaw. Very useful dictionary as multiple translations are given with context and examples so you can always choose the right word. The only downside is that the translations are only provided in the language’s original script. The photos on the App Store show romanisations but either these don’t actually exist in the languages I looked at on the app or they aren’t turned on by default (which would be a very silly design). As an example, if I want to know the Japanese word for something, the translation will only appear in kanji (there’s not even a hiragana option!) which means I usually can’t read it

Fantastic. I'm learning Spanish and use the Spanish to English dictionary a lot. I switched to this dictionary after having started with another. This one is fantastic. The abundant examples and clever cross-referencing allow you to easily learn much more from the dictionary itself.

Old version yes!. I definitely prefer the old version.. The new one is not practical and takes longer to load.

Great for school work with languages!. My Italian teacher actually recommended this app to help with assignments etc and it is perfect for them!!

Login option for those of us who pay for it. Shame there's no login option for those who are registered and pay a yearly fee to support word reference and want to use it as free

Great App. Awesome

Miss old one. The last version was perfect. The one has errors and won't let me search variations of words.

Ads. Please lose the ads - they get in the way

Awful. Too hard to use and too complicated. Too hard to use. Too complicated

Daily use. I use this App English/ French (French native speaker speaking English with my spouse in Australia). It is so useful and getting much better over the years with all the contributions. I use it mostly when I have a precise English or French word/ expression I can’t express well in the other language. I am so grateful for all the contributions and idiomatic usages added in the forum.

Connectivity issues. Yes internet connectivity request still comes up. Even with the latest version :(

Offline database please?. Great app, outstanding references. The only thing that is absolutely essential which it's missing is offline access. Please configure for offline access. Other than that great work!

St Micky. I used to use the website for this app all the time when doing italian throughout high school. Extremely useful, especially for verb conjugations 👍

Great app for language learners. This app is so useful and powerful. I love how easy it is to use and also that it facilitates conjugations.

App crash on iPhone. Very good vocabulary but Unfortunately the app crash often with iPhone and you just need to resent it. Very annoying.

Outstanding reference.. This is a great reference. Almost all entries have examples and sentences for context. Most entries are supplemented with an additional section containing related phrases, variations and idioms. If you can't find what you need there, there are further links to the excellent wordreference forums, where native speakers respond to questions of grammar, idiom and dialect. The only thing missing is full offline access. You need a network connection to use it. If you're traveling in a foreign country, that's not always easy or cost-effective. This app *really* needs an offline database. If it had that, I'd give it 5 stars!

Best language dictionary. Super reliable translations and the examples are really helpful.

Limitations. This is useful but has limitations, especially with examples of words in sentences. More attention should be paid in these to demonstrating dependent prepositions, for example. And I have trouble from time to time with the screen locking, or going grey, with no response. Frustrating!

Why the update?. This app used to work brilliantly and was 5/5 stars. Then someone decided it needed an update and now it doesn't work.

4g. Doesn't work on 4G only home wi fi connection ! Please fix it , was great before the change

Gr8 intermediate/ Advanced usage of EU Lang’s.. Having Intermediate/Advanced usage of 4 EU. [Eng /Italian mother tongues] Great cross references if you watch foreign movies or Read EU news. No fuss & quick meanings of false friends; & secondary meanings. And advanced Lang terms of my 3 or 4 Lang. Gr8 quick ref of tech terms for advanced speakers.

Too slow to depend upon.. Not sure what has changed. This app was once reliable but now it is totally defunct ... won’t respond. When I type in a word ... niente!

Great tool to use. Word Reference is a great tool to use, i love it and recommend it to anyone.

Fantastic but.... No pay option to remove annoying ad banner??

Best Translation app. Outstanding app.... what sets it apart from other apps is that it’ll have translations for phrases in conjunction with words!

GIVE ME LATIN DICTIONARY RN GRRR WOOOOF WOOF BARK BARK. I NEED A FRICK ING LATIN DICTIONARY SO PLEASE ADD IT OMG ITS SO EXPENSIVE EVERYWHERE ELSE WOOF WOOF WOOF BARK BARK GRRR BARK WOOF GRR

I do not know how to use. I do not know haw to use

Some adjustments. Can you please make so when you open the program it stays on the last dictionary used? Too many steps to look for a a translation: Select favourites Select dictionary Start typing. I made a backup of my phone and restored it but I lost all my favs. Can you please make them stored on iCloud??

Raninleigh. I'm finding this version confusing. Where are the verb conjugations? Originally they were at the bottom of the page. Maybe I am missing something.....very confusing when you are studying.

Ads. It doesn't need the ads on the bottom and I find them annoying especially when your trying to do homework.

Best dictionary. This is the best online dictionary i have ever used! These guys r making a gr8 job!! Love it!

Oof. No u

Please add French pronunciation. I use this app almost daily. I’m at an advanced level and love the examples in context; however, I am frustrated that only some of the words have the pronunciation available. This is really essential to a language learner and would save SO much time looking up pronunciation on another site. Please add this feature to all of the entries. Otherwise it’s the best dictionary (for single words) available. For phrases I use Linguee which also has lots of phrases in context. These examples really help to gain a more complete understanding.

What have you done???. Your app was fantastic and you ruined it! And this since you added the paid ads to it. Have you run any tests before releasing it? Internet connectivity error. And now the search doesn't go anywhere. This is ridiculous. Your hunger for money destroyed your business.

Meh. It was good but always ask me if I’m a robot and makes me do the little click the squares with this but it’s unclear and takes forever

C dla sauce. Abdulah macaroni

I know this is not where I should tell you but I have no where else to. Could you add a English to French translation for “router” as in, a bus router, someone who makes bus routes. Thanks. (On the website as well)

Best dictionary. Been using this for years. Love it. Wish it had an offline function.

It’s very cool! I like it!. It’s perfect for me!

BEST EVER I TOTALLY RECOMMEND. This is honestly the best, the most accurate app for free that I have found so far. Most of them are really bad but this is actually a very useful app. It saved me hours worth of time looking through a dictionary to find the translations I needed. 👍👍👍👍

Remake dark mode or add the light mode. The night mode is not good it’s hard to read, bring back the light mode or remake a the noght one

Helps alot. Used for school work I recommend using (:

Great resource. It could be improved by placing the favourite button (star) away from the clear entry (x) as very often you click the wrong one by accident...frustrating. Other than that the French English dictionary is excellent

Hangs constantly. Great content, but hangs constantly. Very irritating. Surely it can be fixed.

Best english-french translations. WordReference is my go-to when comes to words translation between french and english, can’t find anything around. The app clearly needs love and attention (widget please!), but other than that, the quality of the translation is worth all the way.

this app is confusing and awful. it doesn’t help it’s hard to use and it’s glitchy i do not recommend.

Useful. This app is very useful. It's the best online dictionary. There is a lot of translations in French, English or Spanish. Almost all words I searched were there. I definitely recommend it for everyone who's learning a language.

Still the best, but needs tweaks. This is by far the best online language dictionary, but the app layout is very bad. Please move the favourite button. I constantly accidentally tap it when searching. Also, I would be happy to pay to have no ads and perhaps ability to increase text size/change fonts. Also many words do not have examples.

Love it!. I’ve been in French immersion for over 8 years now and my teacher have always recommended it. I only recently downloaded it on my phone. It’s much more accurate then google translate!

Help for school. Best app for english and french

The best vocabulary ever. Recommend by my tutor, it’s the best vocabulary ever and it’s free!!!

Awesome!!. Word reference is perfect for everyone of all ages and perfect for beginners. And it’s super easy to use! Thanks word reference! :)

The Best. This is so good and VERY ACCURATE. Did you know it’s more accurate then google translate?!! It’s so good but they should really update the logo and style. This best app looks like a 1999 dictionary. Make it a 2021/2022 new style dictionary update!

Autocomplete list is a blank black rectangle!. Please fix!

J’adore! Great app using it all the time.. J’adore! I use the French-English and French-Spanish dictionnaires all the times. I find very useful the Forum especially when i need a translation on a word used in a specific context. All the Community gives their input. And you can post your question for help.

Dark mode, please.. White background was only ever made to simulate what it would look like printed on to paper but we’re not going to be printing any of this so there’s no need to blast our eyes out with unnecessary light.

Conjugation troubles. I tried to see all the different conjugations for verbs, but it wouldn’t let me see them because it is “restricted” I tried to delete the app and try again, but that didn’t work either. I tried online too and still nothing. In the past it worked perfectly fine, and this app has helped me a lot in the past. I hope that this can be fixed because I love the app so much!

Something to improve. The function “Recent Searches” is nice, but why does it show the most recent searches at the end, starting from the searches from loooong ago on top? Have to scroll down a very long list to get to those recent ones. Works backwards. Any way to fix this?

Slow. It takes so long to fine words and it is not good if you need it fast

It’s geat but..... it’s good app. I like the app it helps me for school but the app is caned of wacky and not good but it cool, great and awesome

Sooo good. I use this app for writing and I find it essential for my workflow works awesome

No longer works. I loved this app and used it for years. But it has stopped working. Very disappointed.

Great app. A great app that only gets better with time

Great app!. Love it. Download dictionary would love it

More languages. Should’ve more languages such as Hindi(India), Bengali(Bangladesh) etc.

yay dark mode. i like dark mode

Downloading. It’s a great app if your on wifi, but you should be able to download your favourite dictionaries in the app, even if you have to watch an add

The best. Very good!

Forum questions. Good app, though I’m recently having problems with opening threads of forum answers at the bottom of a page. I’m not sure if this is a bug. Also suggest that the app add a function that allows new postings to the forum.

Best dictionary so far... This one is the best dictionary I’ve ever used. I tried many apps but WR stays. Great job!

dark mode omg. It exists now, great app otherwise, the translations are so useful!

very handy, but a dark mode would be nice. it’s nice because it gives you the opportunity to build sentences with single words instead of just translating an entire thing into the language you want. very helpful in that respect, but as other people have said a dark mode would be nice. it’s quite a bright app with the blues and whites. but if you don’t mind that, than it’s 5/5.

Fine translating app. Fine translating app

Doesn’t properly switch between translation and verbs. Super frustrating when I try to switch to look at verbs the screen doesn’t change and that’s the whole reason I got this app 😡 please fix

Great resource. Only have experience using the french-english dictionary. Very helpful to use alongside books on a tablet. 5 stars if a night mode was available.

Helpful. But ugly and inefficient. It’s very helpful. Yet it’s inn efficient to type out when you have google translate. App layout is also ugly. 3 🌟 is good for this app.

website is great. this app needs some serious work. stalls when opening and entering a few characters, have to force quit. no night mode. color palette doesn’t work well with nightshift. highlighting text is invisible. the verb part of an entry often does not load properly or at all, just a blank area with scroll bars. favorites/stars are not shared on the main site. search is not intelligent at all and often phrases have to be exactly the same with [qch] or [qqn] in the write infinitive form to return results for idioms/phrases

Non. C pas le fun

Love it!. Use this app for school. Perfect for English-French translation and to find words to enrich my writing vocabulary!!

Disappeared. The app icon disappeared and I have to open through App Store. Why?

ish. it just could be better, its food but somethings just missing

THIS APP SUCKS AND ITS AMAZING. THIS APP IS AMAZING DO NOT DOWNLOAD IT IT IS BAD BAD ABD BAD SO GOOD NOT GLICHY AT ALL

Awesome! Good. It’s the best app! Even though it has a ugly layout its very helpfull.

Update. Good app 👌🏻👌🏻

AWFUL UPDATE!!. I live in a foreign country and used to use word reference on a daily basis to help me with simple translations. But ever since this last update I haven't been able to use the application at all! First of all, the new user interface is awful and absolutely not convenient at all. It used to open up automatically in the language I needed and now it no longer does that. But what's most annoying is that it constantly keeps telling me I need internet access to use the application even though I am always connected to wifi!! So even if I did get over the annoying new user interface, the app is literally impossible to use. Such a disappointment!

One of the best tools for learning a language. Wordreference contains the most detailed and complete list of definitions for Spanish - including slang and localisms. It is really one of, if not the best references for the meaning of words. It also has a colossal verb dictionary with all possible conjugations. Keep up the good work. I rarely write reviews but this app deserves one because I use it so much. Thank you for this app.

It used to be one of my most used apps. ...Until this last update. The addition of adds is annoying, but I can handle that. What I don't like is the new schematic that takes longer to navigate (as opposed to originally to the dictionary search right away, one has to now search for the dictionary they want to use each time). Also, ever since the update, the app has been crashing more and just randomly freezing up when I search, which diminishes the usefulness of the app. It was one of my favorite apps, but now I may need to look elsewhere if it keeps being freezing up this.

The app for all the language learners. I take french, advanced level now, and this is the app my whole class uses. Super awesome. Has all the words and phrases, and if it doesn't, the forum does or you can post a thread question. It's always perfect. Always. I simply did not give five stars because the button to remove ads does not work. I've removed the ads on my iPad but cannot remove them here on my iPhone. Fix it and I'll give you five stars all the way!

Fantastic. Love especially that I can search for any form of a verb and it accurately tells me infinitive form and identifies the tense entered. Also the "hear" option with different location options. Also the great dictionary which gives rich definitions. This is a perfect dictionary app for someone trying who is a serious student of Spanish

The best hands down.. I’ve bounced around between several dictionaries and translators and WordReference is by far the best, most thorough, complete, and frankly brilliant. It accounts for all potential uses of a word even in very idiomatic expressions and even accounts for regional differences. IE France vs Québec vs. West Africa. Scroll down to see the incredible amount of information given for any word. Love this app!

How much this app can contribute, surprised me.. This offers more features and has a more comprehensive english word-set than some of the well known and esteemed English only dictionary apps. Like the clear audio pronunciations and the IPA sounding guide for each word. I hope the developers continue to expand and add more features. I would like more personal optimization settings though. Thank you for this really helpful definition, synonym and translation tool.

Why did you change it?? >:(. The updated version of this app is really frustrating. Every time I try to type a word, it says "The WordReference app requires internet connectivity." This message just keeps popping up after every letter I try to type and it's so annoying. The app was perfect before this stupid update. I don't know why they bothered to change it!! I'm really mad about this. And also, I really hate the colors and the way it displays the pages now. Honestly, it looked perfect the way it was before, but they just messed it all up with the new update.

Content is spectacular, but the app itself….. The dictionaries themselves are amazing; I use them all the time. However, when I open the app and search a word right away, the whole app freezes. To get around this, I have to wait a couple of seconds, then type my word slowly. This gets annoying over time, and I wish it could just get fixed. ‘Tis my only complaint lol

Very good but can be improved. Very good app and it’s free. There is improvement possible. For example could you add a settings pane so we can adjust for example the font size. Also consider a simple yet useful feature that allows adding words to a list so we can review them later.

A must. The services of "WordReference" are top notch giving you the ability to translate to and from different languages, as well as having verb conjugations, example sentences, phrasal expressions, and dictionaries in target language (i.e. - there's an Italian dictionary with definitions in Italian). The UI has improved and could still improve more, but the raw potential of this app merits 5 stars on its own. Must for anyone who has even the slightest interest in language. WARNING: No, it doesn't translate sentences, but that's what Google translate is for - good approximations. This is a different tool, one that gives you the ability to entrench yourself within a language and start your own inner motor to think in that language. Brilliant!

Change it back. Change it back ... It worked perfectly fine... It worked great... IT WORKED FANTASTIC... I never had a problem with using it... The old style of app has improved over the years with looking up sneaky expressions and things like that... The last thing I need as a classroom teacher is for this app to become more difficult to use... Which it had been... I'm sorry if I'm a moron and am having difficulty adjusting to the new format but I don't like it... Also I get the internet connectivity issue... Such a tragedy... That's the perfect word... Fantastic app UPDATE IS TERRIBLE...

New version has problems!. I've been using the WordReference as my go-to dictionary as I've been learning Spanish. The most recent update changed the design of the app, which usually doesn't bother me, except for the fact that the app no longer remembers my last dictionary used if I close the app. I have to reopen the Spanish-English dictionary every time. It adds about 10 seconds to every search, when before I could search for a term in 2-3. I wish it would default to the last-used or even most-used dictionary. Also, any search that uses and accent (á, é, í, ó, ú) doesn't work. It won't even search for the term, even though it appears in the recommended searches when you fill in a couple letters. Also, adds are more noticeable and obtrusive on this version, which is probably why it isn't as fast. You can remove them for 4.99 EACH YEAR. I used to love this app. I hope some changes are made or I'll have to find something else. I don't recommend using this right now.

The new update is unusable. The app used to be excellent (I was using it on an iPad). After the latest update it's impossible to use. So many extra steps are needed to get to the dictionary of your choice and then you can't go back a step, any time you click the back arrow it takes you ALL the way to the beginning. Also, it is not possible any more to search a phrase (I used to do it all the time up until this update), now you can only search a word and then browse within that article. I can't believe how much useful features have been lost! Actively looking for another dictionary app right now.

Same great functionality with one UI issue. I have always loved word reference and I use it constantly for translation work. This version gives you the ability to put your most used languages at the bottom and you can select them without re-searching the word you are on. My one problem with the new iteration of the app is that the phone's status bar bleeds into the user interface. I hope the developers separate the bar from the search box in the next update. Still, great app!

Bad update. This update did not fix anything that was wrong with the earlier version because NOTHING WAS WRONG with it! This new version presents the same home screen every time it opens and then requires at least two selections before one can begin a search. Never mind that you previously designated your language as a favorite, you still need to go from home to favorites and reselect it every time you open the app. Kind of defeated the ease of what used to be a quick and streamlined way to find a great translation solution. I strongly recommend against installing the new version.

Great, but internet is still required. I downloaded the latest version, but it still requires the Internet. I use this app everyday for my French homework. It's great, it translates every word I put in. But it doesn't work in school because our wifi is terrible. Please fix this problem because it is becoming very difficult for me at school to work. This is pretty much the only reference I have. Thanks!

Incomplete. Can you imagine this. The app does not give you the conjugation of être!! Pretty important word to neglect. UPDATE: It does, if you can figure out how to get to it. For MOST verbs, if you look up the French verb and see the English definitions, you are looking at the top-left tab: French-English. If you click the top-right tab: French Verbs, you get the full conjugation. But not for être. While viewing the English definitions, if you scroll to very near the bottom of the page, you find a link, in French, that gets you to the conjugation. I know the app is free, but really. It isn’t what I would want as an example of the quality of my work.

THE solution for finding the right word or phrase. If you want to truly understand how to express yourself and sound like a native speaker, or to understand the nuances of what you're reading, this app presents the array of translations in context to interpret what is most closely fitting. If it's not in the dictionary, check the forum discussions at the bottom of the page. After using this app, Google translate and other language apps will feel like trying to discuss great literature with an ATM.

would recommend!. this app is great because word reference is an amazing resource with essentially an answer for every translation question you could ever have. I also love that this newer version of the app has autocomplete, like the site version. my only complaint is that the ads are annoying and distracting. I would be even willing to pay an upgrade fee to have them removed!

Latest update losing its mind asking for Internet connection. Having to tell the app what language I'm trying to translate to every single time is a terrible upgrade decision. I'm not trying to learn 15 languages, OK? Remember. And for the last couple of days both in Europe and in the US with multiple carriers and Wi-Fi networks, every single keystroke pesters me that it needs an Internet connection. It has one! Removed the app and reinstalled it and still the same problem. This is on a fresh phone as well not from a backup. I'm afraid you guys have introduced some issues.

Essential app (when it's not buggy). Great app. I regularly switch between English and Spanish daily, and I don't know what I would do without it. It provides many different translations for a single word and it's easy to figure out which one you're looking for. However it is extremely buggy. Most of the time the back button doesn't work. I've noticed this is especially prevalent when going to the forums from a ENG-SPA term. Sometimes the predictive drop down search bar won't go away once you tap the term you were looking for, blocking the translation. Switching between the dictionary/definition/conjugation tabs is also laggy and sometimes just plain doesn't work. I still love this app. It's a lifesaver. But its functionality has been getting increasingly worse.

Conjugator does not work. Word Reference is the only translator I can use for school work. In the previous version of the app, the application was usable and the conjugator worked (unless you typed a Spanish word while searching En-Es and then clicked on the conjugator). This version of the app is not user-friendly. It is hard to switch between languages and the conjugator, and the Spanish conjugator does not work. For example, when I tried to get the conjugations for "montar", I just got a blank screen with working advertisements.

So helpful!. This is not a translator for long sentences, but the translations for individual terms and words are incredibly helpful. Many translations include the words in a sentence, and often with the same sentence in English so you can see how the word is used and exactly what the sentence with the word means. It also includes the multiple different Spanish words for a single English word, so you can see the multiple words for multiple contexts. A really amazing language tool.

great dictionary, poorly maintained app. i use wordreference for spanish/english nearly every day. it has much better information and context than google translate, but it seems like the app development has just stalled out. the interface is out-of-date and clunky. more importantly, it has numerous bugs that often cause it to be unable to search, and when it is able to search, sometimes it fails to find entries that do exist. in the last week, it has gotten even worse. i haven’t been able to search for anything for several days, and the latest update has not fixed this. i hope this gets fixed soon, because i like this app and it’s 100% unusable for me right now.

Awesome but not without its bugs. Of course wordreference is the best online language to language dictionary in existence (for Spanish at least but I would assume it's great for other languages as well). This app is definitely an improvement from the previous version. However, there is a bug that doesn't allow you to actually manually define a list of favorite dictionaries, which would be super helpful for me because I'm bouncing between four different languages much of the time.

Thumbs up!. I am a world language teacher and I use this app/website all the time! I recommend it to my students as well, as it offers a listening feature, conjugation charts and expressions and compound word combinations with sample sentences/uses that are invaluable. I wish that I had word reference way back when I was in hs and college!'

Use everyday. I use this app to accompany reading texts in French every day. I love it! After such frequent use (literally years) my only suggestions is automatically deleting the previously searched word from the search bar, instead of having to hit the tiny x in the corner. That or make the x larger. Or delete the text in the search bar simply by tapping in the search bar text box. Just something I feel would make it a little quicker to use. Thanks for making such a great app!!!

iOS 7.0.2 version does not have the best feature. I love this app! The forum is helpful and the translations are almost always accurate. The only issue is that the new version does not have the bar at the bottom that enables you to switch between Spanish to English and English to Spanish, etc. Please reintroduce this feature!!

One Of The Best Apps for Language Learners/Scholars. As a French student and educator, I can certainly vouch for this app! Not only is it accurate and reliable, but it also shows conjugation tables for verbs, and the meaning of phrases that the searched words are often used in in that language. If you are looking for a great digital bilingual dictionary for many different languages, this is the app to buy (for free!).

by far the best language reference. I use this for Spanish, and it is far and away my most useful language reference because it lists phrases and idiomatic expressions with examples. So many times one is helpless when faced with some idiomatic phrase. Try google translate, its laughable. But Word Reference always comes through. And detailed discussions on the forum are also extremely helpful and discuss differences between how things are spoken in different countries. *Fantastic* reference source.

The Best. I really like WordReference because of the accurate definitions and conjugations for Spanish. Instead of using Google Translate, I would look up words with WordReference instead. In fact, WordReference has helped me improve my Spanish writing because I can accurately look up conjugations for words and even search for synonyms. If you really want to improve your reading and writing for a foreign language, I recommend WordReference.

Update problems. Since the most recent update there have been a lot of glitches. Before that it was my favorite app for translation, but now it is practically impossible to use. It constantly sends notifications that it requires an Internet connection even when I am connected to the Internet, and these notifications make it impossible to use. It also frequently just doesn't show search results when I search a word. These bugs need to be worked out or I will likely just delete the application.

Yay Thanks!!. This app has been indispensable for me, a US citizen working throughout Europe. That bump in the road with the new interface was terrible. If i could make a customer /user suggestion... Dont invest so much in a user interface that is already very much loved... Maybe more access and usability. Such as a registration that allows referencing your history or important words from any device, pasting in phrases/ text. Consider a higher feature access for subscription :). Anyway... Thanks for the old interface back!

Could use a little something extra. I love this app. Translations are great and everything, but there's one thing I wish it had: Whenever I look translations up, I want to note them somehow so I can look at them later. As in, I want to be able to star them so that they go into a list that I can look at later so I can study it.

Love WR, hate the update. WR is one of my favorite websites. I use it multiple times a day. While I'm glad WR got a release of their new apps bug free so that it is functioning again, it still isn't a good update. Previous versions, I could open up the app and go back to the dictionaries I used last. Now every time I open it, it comes to "All Dictionaries" then I have to click on "favorites" and then choose one for example "English to French", before I can start my search. So the app just made 3 unnecessary steps to seek a word, where I used to just open it and start typing my query. It's almost easier to just keep a browser tab open to their mobile site. Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Love content but app needs work. After years of using WR on web in French Spanish and Italian classes in ‘00s-‘10s era, I’ve come back to it in app-form now that I’ve taken on French once again, in conjunction with a French boyfriend . WR is still my go-to dictionary as it really is the most well rounded reference point you can find online for free - incl use in-context, verb conjugation and of course the ever-helpful forums….all that said, the app is sooo faulty. While its Web 1.0 design is kinda nostalgic and refreshing, the glitchiness that comes with it is much less-so. App gets stuck constantly on certain entries or prompts after doing a little clicking around, and I frequently have to quit the app and return which can be infuriating when I’m trying to take notes. Pls fix !

Amazing app!. Word Reference is incredible - no more paper dictionaries to pack around. I can search a word in Italian or easily switch to English. It gives definitions with sample sentences in both languages; has a section for compound forms of the word, including idiomatic usage; and gives verb conjugation, among other features. It is also my go-to English dictionary. Can’t say enough good things about this app!

Great app but.... I love this app it is very functional and is almost exactly similar to the full website version. However, with the new update the search bar has changed. It used to autocorrect in Spanish, but now it autocorrects as if you were only doing a google search in English. Not a huge deal but it definitely cuts down on time if it will autocorrect in Spanish!!

Word Reference. I have been using this terrific interface for a long time now and it is as close to perfect as one can get. I use it almost everyday as a serious Spanish student. As others have said, the recent attempt to "improve" it was unsuccessful and I am so happy it was! Please...leave this outstanding resource as it is!

Fonts in latest version too small. The font size in this version is too small on an iPhone and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to adjust it. The previous versions' font size was just right. (This may not be directly the app's fault but could be because fonts in web views on iPhone in general seem to be getting smaller.)

Excellent translator, visually unappealing. This is the best app for translations; much better than google translate because they give a definition with the translation so you know what you are saying. Also gives information about where a certain word is used, for example different words in Mexico and Spain. Definitely needs to have a nicer interface--the app is visually unappealing. Also, the in app purchase to remove ads is not working for me...says I can't connect to the store...

Multitasking fixed; Larger Screen Optimization Back. The most recent update appears to have fixed multitasking on supported iPads and also restored iPhone 6(+) and newer optimization! Excellent work! It also fixed it so that after selecting a new dictionary from the sidebar, the sidebar automatically closes. While I'm not the biggest fan of the color scheme change, this update is much appreciated!

Could've been better. The dictionaries and forums are awesome but there are some tech issues with the app - it glitches constantly, wouldn't let me type constantly, and generally just prevents me from using it without having to restart it all the time Edit: Please please fix the tech issues. It's becoming unusable. I hope the IT team is doing ok. Hello? Are you still there?

Used to be my absolute favourite app, now it’s unusable. The whole point of this app is to be able to look up a word and get the right translation whenever you need to. This app does that amazingly... when the search feature works. It’s become super inconsistent lately, and sometimes I need to repeatedly close it and open it again just to make the search bar able to register the word I type. Not sure why. When you guys figure it out, my rating will instantly jump to a 5.

Simply wonderful.. I cannot rave enough about Word Reference. For quick (and accurate!) translation of its offered language, it has remained the resource that I always turn to first. Only World Reference can find you the meaning of those nuanced French phrases or translate that irregular Italian verb in seconds. And now it’s in the palm of my hand! Couldn’t be happier with it.

An excellent app ruined. Stop it please. Change for the sake of change is counterproductive, which is exactly what this latest so-called update is so please stop. Why did you ruin a user-friendly app that was once quite useful? It's senseless that we have to select from over 10 languages every time we open the app. In the past, the app defaulted to the last language used, which was a common-sense approach. The second mistake the developers made was a glitch that says an Internet connection is needed. This error comes up day and night and I know I have a working connections because other apps work.

Love WR, But App Glitches Often…. I love Word Reference and have used it for a long time, but am finally about to find a new foreign language dictionary app…. Often upon opening it, it won’t let me type in the search bar and and I have to open and close it multiple times before it works. Sometimes I can type a few letters before it freezes. It’s really frustrating when living in a foreign country or traveling and just wanting to quickly look a word up

Still having internet connectivity issues. I love this app in general.. Love the new start page with all the languages provided.. Still a great layout.. However each time I type a letter, it continually says that internet connectivity is needed for this app and I have to keep hitting the retry button after entering each letter. It would also be helpful if the back button was reverted back to its old use.. To clear out the entire search snd start a new one. Instead, now it is used as a backspace button, which i can see the benefits to.. But I just simply think it was better as it was before. Overall a great app, however my connectivity issues have not been resolved.

Conjugation tables and contextualization. I have been familiar with the website for a long time now, and I have just started using the app for Czech and Italian. There is no dictionary that is more complete and useful. If you want to know how to conjugate a verb in ANY tense or you just want to know how the word is used in simple context or in a foreign country's news, this app does it all. If you're serious about language learning, get it; if not, don't get it and certainly don't write a review. This work deserves 5 stars.
