Skybrary – Kids Books & Videos App Description & Overview

What is skybrary – kids books & videos app? "My family loves it! They always use the app when we go on car rides or when they're bored at home. It's good to keep their imaginations going with reading. I totally recommend." - Parent @Gonzachr006

“I love the skybrary app. Can't recommend it enough. My son is riveted by the stories and begs to hear more, the narrators are exemplary, and I love the diversity of stories. Impressed. For 4.99 a month I am incredibly impressed with the book selection. As a preschool teacher I also appreciate the variety of fiction, nonfiction. Since much of early reading is about interest and developing a love for reading asking for the child’s interest is right on track.

Skybrary. I love how my sister loves skybrary

Great Storytelling App for Young Kids!. This app is wonderful! My niece and nephew really enjoy reading books in Skybrary. I watch them get immersed in the pages and look for clickable animations after each narration. I highly recommend this app for younger kids!

Learning to read is a journey.. When you are looking back and your memories of reading are the worlds that were brought to life in your imagination, that's your reading journey. Now you're a guide to that journey with a beginning reader, I bet you want to guide this new journey to magical memories for your new young reader. This is THE cutting edge of creating that train depot that leads...anywhere.

Descant. They never have New books but other than that the app is good

Good for young kids learning to read. The simplicity of the books to navigate, the fun animation and the narration encourage kids to keep reading. It’s been particularly useful to keep my child occupied and doing something worthwhile while school is closed. We also enjoy the videos to interesting places!

Great reading app. My four year old loves his “electric books”, whether it’s with me reading them or In auto-read mode. The little Levar Burton mini films are also a hoot and have inspired some funny conversations. This is the most loved app on our iPad

Impossible to cancel. Free month? Cancel anytime? Sounds good until they make it nearly impossible to cancel. My 5yr old son had no interest in this app.

Not worth the money, no offline usage. Due to legal issues, there is no Reading Rainbow content, e.g. video clips. The books are updated occasionally, but there has been no new video content for over 1 yr now. Not worth $50 yearly.

Crashing. I've had this app for years now. My daughter and I love it. The last update hasn't fixed the crashing once you select an island. I tried clicking on app support and it takes me to a page that states "no longer exists". Please fix, we truly miss using this app.

Do NOT buy this app!!. OMG soooooooooo weird where are the videos?! Don’t buy this buy epic instead

Annie's review. The best reading app ever and I love it!

So good. Love the snake my kid loves it

App nice but has a subscription requirement. Just as ABC Mouse does as well many games for kids they my call it premium membership or vip membership as well other names who knows maybe additional charges can be in game after sign up I have come across such apps. Reading rainbow belongs on tv unless it has streaming content from show as well books for no extra charge. Is only way such apps worth your time that what tutoring centers at libraries if it has one use it to avoid any unnecessary money spending.

Login issues/Terrible customer service. Going on month two of paying for this and cannot login to my account on my iPad. Leaving my son have to use it on the laptop. I’ve emailed customer service and never heard back from them. I’m very disappointed being that this is a good app but the whole point was for it to be used on the iPad. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!

The app equivalent of Hotel California.. This app is great and my younger son loved it for a while. Then my kids stopped using it as much and I attempted to cancel the subscription. GOOD LUCK! You can start a trial any time you like, but you will never leave. When I attempt to cancel under my AppleID at the apple store, there is no “cancel subscription” button. When I attempt to cancel on the app itself, it takes me to the Apple store where, again, there is no “cancel subscription” button. If I go to the website, it tells me I don’t even have an account and to “start a free trial!” HA! It will never be free. I thought I had received help with this a while ago, but just today noticed I’ve been being charged for MONTHS. MANY, MANY months. I’ve contacted support from both Apple and Skybrary, I’ll just have to see how long it takes. Too bad, it’s an otherwise engaging reading app for kids, but this is very frustrating.

My daughter can’t get enough!. Great app - wide variety of book content that my daughter could scroll through for hours if we let her! The animations on some pages are fun and creative - and the field trips are a great add! This will serve as a great way for us to be okay with screen time.

Great adventure!. This is a lovely way for my kids to have screen time. They are learning and enjoying the adventures!

The best. This is the best book app out there. My kids and I love it!

Not usable without Wifi. My family was very excited for Skybrary, but it has fallen short. The actual practical use of a educational distraction in the shopping cart, car, or on airplane travel is unavailable. Overall the price tag is not worth the time I spend downloading and returning the 5 books you can check out. (My kid devoured those in two seconds. )

Very fun. Lots of books, very good for kids.

An appropriate hidden massages for kids. Just check the snail video in the National Geographic, it is un appropriate and it wasn’t the first, I did cancel my subscription for sure .

This app is great. It really is

Skybrary. So Perfect!

Brings back great memories.. My boys love it. I like it because it’s better than the other stuff they play on the tablet.

Very Good App. Was a little bit confusing to use at first but called them and they helped me figure it out. Ryan loves all of the videos especially National Geographic

Great books and animations!. This is a great app that I love to use with my 4 year old nephew. The read aloud and animation features are great to engage young readers.

CountryRaven. The Reading Rainbow app requires a subscription. I buy the six month subscription for about 5 bucks a month. It does feel steep, but I've had the app since early in its release and I have really appreciated the service for my five-year old. They have expanded it greatly over time. The partnership with National Geographic for Kids was an especially great addition. There is a wide array of both fiction and non-fiction books. These are real books by popular authors, not rehashed public domain stories. Kids can have the books read to them, or can read them on their own. There are simple, interactive animations in many of the books. There are also short videos to stream from Reading Rainbow episodes. My five-year old is a fan. While I still prefer putting real books in my kids hands, Reading Rainbow is a traveling library that is great for trips away, car rides, and those nights when I need a little help through the three-book bed-time routine. It is also great when I see him open the app on his own and browse the library to choose his own books and videos. Kids do earn stickers for reading books. My kid loves the stickers, but I feel this part of the app is pretty poorly implemented and does not utilize the medium creatively enough. In the end, though, it isn't about the stickers, it is about reading and learning.

So far. So far I haven’t been able to determine how to share with my grandson-sons... I have two (twins) which doubles the issue.

A rip off. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

I can’t access my paid account asks for more $. Help, when I recently moved my kids back to iOS devices and added them to family share, this app doesn’t recognize my annual purchase, instead it asks for new payment after I’ve logged in.

Reading made fun!. I highly recommend Skybrary. The interactive nature of the stories and the ability to also watch videos has really ignited a love of reading in my daughter. The price is so reasonable for all of the books and videos you have access to. - Reading Mom and Daughter

Wouldn’t let me make an account. Tried to make an account to use with my son but wouldn’t let me put in my birth year. Kept giving me an error. Promptly deleted.

My 4 year old keeps thanking me for this app!!!. My 3 and 4 year old love to use my tablet, but I hate for them to just play games. My 4 year old loves books and to be read to, but I can't always read to her as often as she would like. I tried the 5 books first and we fell in love with it! My daughters LOVE this app. I like the ability to have it read, but also the ability for me to read to them or them to themselves! They usually love watching videos, but have been so pleased with the books they haven't even began to mess with the videos yet. $50 a year really isn't that bad when you think of the amount of money you'd spend on books, gas, and time to go to the library, bookstore, etc. It takes up a lot less space and with young children ever changing tastes makes this totally worth it! Some complain this is way too expensive, but when you have multiple children with different taste this is way cheaper, plus paying for the service of the app reading to you. I love that this not only has fun books, but educational ones and National Geographic! There are books for different cultures as well. This is an all around great app. This may not be for everyone, every age, or every reader out there so I encourage you to try the app first before committing to the price so as not to be disappointed. The free trial is more than generous and really gives you a taste!

Unable to manage on iPhone. Hard to cancel. Will not allow you to find a way to cancel. Will just keep billing and billing.

Nice app. Nice selection

Crashing. This was a great app. But recently (read last couple of months), the app has been crashing every time my 4 year-old uses the app. The iPad is a gen 4, but I don’t think that’s it...can someone from the development team help me out?

Best reading App ever. Highly recommended. It’s worth it for the children

Excellent!. I am thoroughly impressed! I wanted my granddaughter (5 yrs.) to use her iPad for something other than watching videos and playing games. There are a huge number of age appropriate (you choose the age) books which are wonderfully narrated. The app allows any five books to be placed in a backpack (downloaded) so children can ‘read’ even when offline. There are ‘stickers’ given as rewards after every book that is ‘read.’ This app is totally worth the money!

Wonderful. This is a fabulous app, but I would like to cancel my subscription to Skybrary. My grandchildren are getting older and aren’t interested in this program.

:). I used to have this app as a kid (reading rainbow) and it’s the best I recommend it to any parent that has trouble with their kids reading. It has informational videos and it’s just all around a great app for your child.

Stories come alive!. What a wonderful app for young readers. Although my niece is a little too young to be reading on her own, she loves to watch me click on the animations and help turn the pages. Luckily, the narration will help her learn vocabulary while she begins learning to read on her own. These books are so creative and I know it will help grow her imagination. This app is great and I highly recommend!

No Reading Rainbow. I was hoping, when we got this app, that it would contain all the classic bits like Toothpaste Millionaire from Reading Rainbow - where most of us know Levar Burton from. Sadly, due to legal disputes, he can no longer post that content and Reading Rainbow itself has no content to speak of. I would have loved to share with our kids some of these stories from my childhood. That said, the app has loads of books and videos. Kids can read or have stories read to them. I originally tried to access the Skybrary from my PC through my browser with my daughter and just about nothing worked properly- hence the missing star. The books would not open and it crashed repeatedly. Everything so far works as it should on the iPads.

My favorite reading app!. This is still my favorite reading app because it allows access to quality selection of books the kids can choose on their own. I like that they do not need supervision or help to choose what interests them. There are different levels for different age kids so I can have my oldest read to herself while my youngest can have the book read to him. I am disappointed since the new update and have to deduct a star however, because the books are no longer staying downloaded into the backpack making the app frustrating and difficult without wi-Fi access. It used to be our go to app in waiting rooms and long lines, but now it is pretty useless unless I remember to go into the app prior to leaving and re-download all the books each time. It is such a long time with 5 backpacks full of books and does not download quickly with cellular. If I can figure out how to fix this I will update my review. I wish that it would allow the kids to access offline like it used to. I will probably not renew my subscription during school since we usually use this while we are out, but if you have access to reliable wi-Fi it would be worth it. I will likely renew next summer when the kids are home. Still, a great app, well designed and fun!

It’s a great app. I think even though I’m 10 and in 5th grade I think this app can be helpful to any age at any time just pick out a book that you might like then start reading it’s a whole new experience and way better than raz kids

Go anywhere be anything!!!. I grew up in this show, and when I heard it was coining back I was super excited. I read the other reviews and thought I would chime in. My two nephews and I love this app. We read the books together (unless LeVar is the voice of the auto reader!) then we find videos we can watch that are the same subject of the books. (Eli, 2 years old, likes the Honest Abe video because their is a scarecrow in it. Ethan 7 years old, is really into the dragon books, because I read and he gets to make the pictures animate when he touches the screen) it's amazing to get to share my childhood with my nephews. I love the animation, the many islands full of books. There are pieces of the original episodes! I know people seem frustrated with no being able to view the books offline, but even with that minor flaw, the app is worth it. I am not a technical guru... but I can say bed time stories have become a must in our house hold and I'm so happy with this service! (Ethan wants me to add... every kid need this because it's soooooo coool!)

Great app!. This app is very kid-user friendly with a wide variety of books and virtual field trips to choose from. It has a narration option that will read the book to them, which is really great for younger readers. It’s full of bright colors and adorable animations. We really enjoy Skybrary!

Phenomenal app. I did not know that there was something that was carrying on LeVar Burton’s legacy after reading Rainbow was canceled I would’ve had this app years ago it’s phenomenal!

Love it!. My 5 year old loves the app. I love how fun and interactive it is. ❤️

Background noise. The background noise of the island won’t shut off and it’s incredibly annoying.

Great fun. Great range and presentation. Needs a zoom function and somewhere to put the extra stickers like another island.

Amazing app!. I loved Reading Rainbow growing up. When I found the app I was too excited to download it. So far I'm just doing the free trial to explore everything and see how my kids like it, if they really enjoy it as much as I have exploring everything, then I will definitely do the year membership!

Amazing!. Such an amazing app, beautifully done with a great selection of books. My 3 year old adores it and I love the range of books, especially awesome for homeschool!

Slow and slack disappointed. Paid for one month subscription and since a day been trying to download books always end up saying error tap here again ...... Goes on ....... What a waste of money and time . Had high hopes with all the video samples but disappointed with the app

Love it !. I was reluctant to buy this for my five year old due to the price but it has been well worth it and I will renew her subscription. It is a great alternative to videos when I need free time. The stories are all kid-safe and teach good values and critical thinking. Well done !

A good education, but a bit of problems. A great fun way to learn and study reading processes. But unable to use it because of the option "Enter the year you were born" i tried both my birth year and my daughter's but did not work. Please fix this, my daughter used to enjoy this so much but then we got a new iPad and tried to install it back.. And this happend

Amazing. My 5 yr son loves this app! I downloaded this app 2 days ago, already he has read 11 books and he loves the video field trips as well. My son has always been a fan of books, you provide a fabulous selection of books to choose from. I love that I can log in and see his progress and see what he had been reading. Well worth the 30 dollars every 6 mth. I have not been with you long enough to know how often the books are updated but I hope for the price of the program we see consistent updates on books as well as the documentaries/ field trips. Thank you for such an educating app

this stinks!. It never specified that the app is only for iPad, I have an iPad and iPhone, bummer!

It setup default as auto renew and no notification before charge. Tried to cancel but seems still going to charge me from apple. Need to settle through apple.

Fabulous program - issues with every version. Our kids love this program and use it at least 3 times a week. Our only issue is that each time there is an upgrade, we lose access to the program for a time until bugs are fixed. This round of upgrades means we cannot access any islands or read any books.

App crashes constantly, does not even get loaded.. I was very happy with this app when I first got it and a subscription. It was working fine and my youngest loved going on to read. Then with the latest update it changed and we haven't been able to get it to load since. It crashes before we even get into it. Extremely disappointed and will no longer be renewing this app.

Crashes. App kept crashing during account setup. Could eventually enter all the details before it crashed but now can't login or setup a new account. I want to like this app despite monthly fees but it's just one big fail.

Just as awesome today.... If you are looking for the perfect app for your child, this is it. This app combines books, videos and games in this absolutely PACKED interactive app. I subscribed for a full year, simply because I didn't want to have to limit my son and I...we will use it, a lot! Get your child interested in reading today!

Very Good!. Like a library on my kids iPad. Little on the pricey side, but worth it so far.

An amazing app. The quality of the videos, book selection, ease of use... Just stellar! At $5 per month on the 6 month purchase, it's a real bargain! The only thing needed is to allow each of your kids to have their own back pack. Levar, great job!

can't return books too much $$$ for monthly. would prefer one time then forget about. Library card gives me much more and they read to me! have kids books. the only difference is reading rainbow is charging a hefty monthly subscription for a fancy animated layout. Mind you, the library website, not as. fun gives me more nfo about each book plus lets me preview. So no... definitely NOT NOT NOT worth the cost. Plus, taking up valuable space on my iPad, so sorry, you'll be deleted. My 5yo no longer interested in the 5 books she didn't know were all she'd get - it wasn't clear we couldn't return. reading rainbow, mind you, she only liked 2 of them, the other 3 not what she expected. in all, i was not very excited about the book collection. $9.99 a month, nope. Too many better options.

Crashes on open?. This is a five star app.... When it works. I am sure it will be fixed up soon, but as of right now when I try to launch it crashes within a second.

My daughter loves this app. This app is everything I remember the TV episode being

Excellent app by excellent people. I never saw RR as a kid, but i wish I had. Our daughter loves this app, with wonderful educational videos and more stories than we can shake a stick at. Good readers too, I'm not allowed to read to my kid because she wants Burton and company to read to her. Great concept with the "sign out/return" method of gathering books, but considering how fast we read stories it would be great to either speed up the book return process (ie: don't bother with the "are you sure?" message or faster navigation back to the islands) or let us sign out more books at a time (say up to 10, 15 or more) so we stay focussed on the reading, not the mechanism. The long term subscription fee of $5/month is so reasonable my wife and I both bought subscriptions for our individual devices. Now we can provide good stories to our kid anywhere, anytime. Thanks RR and company!

Interesting app. I love the app but would like a cheaper price for reading books for 6 months @ 29.99. When other app's offer lifetime membership for this price for 24 hours of signing up.

Too expensive. The app is great but the subscription is too expensive for the average family which defeats the purpose of Reading Rainbow.

Great app. Thank you for still keeping this show available.. My kids will b enjoying this app

Reading Rainbow Rocks!. Thank you for this app. Was my favourite kids show even before I had kids! We use it every night.

It’s not loading well. We frequently have to reload the app as it freezes often and unable to load books. Otherwise it is a great app with lots of selections.

Won't even open :-(. Disappointed it does nothing when I click open...we've been waiting/anticipating this app...help?!!

So far really impressive.. I am 20 years older than the target market. I'm checking the app out because I'm a fan of LeVar Burton and the original tv series. So far I really like how it's done. There are several interactive kid books apps, but this one has a good amount of content and it's organized well in a fun interactive way -- with themed islands in the sky you can travel to with your balloon. Of course, the app also has LeVar Burton, including education videos with him on location. Looks like he had tonnes of fun making the app too. And Yeah, it does lack the complete original theme song... I'm guessing the rights were owned by PBS or something. I'd definitely recommend this app for kids. A couple technical points: -The app is crashing when I try to watch videos. Maybe the streaming server is overloaded right now with requests. That bug can be fixed. - The icon needs work. You shouldnt put the app name or title text in the icon itself. The app name is always going to be under it, or beside it, anyways. The balloon is cool, but ambiguous in that picture. Also should incorporate a book some how. Honestly, branding and recognizability is really important -- I'd consider even putting LeVar's photo/head in the icon if it can be done well.

Frustrating - Can't run on multiple devices as promised. If you plan to use it on only 1 device, it's great. I was thrilled when I read that you can use it on additional iPads as I have two kids and two iPads. It was impossible to get the 2nd iPad to recognize the subscription. Reading Rainbow support couldn't figure it out and figured it was an Apple issue. Apple treated me like I was doing it wrong, then said you can't have the subscription on more than one device!

A piece of the puzzle not all of it. This app will give you a reasonable number of kids books that it will either read to you or that can be mute so it is not read to you. It does not go into the phonics of words nor is there a mode where the child is able to ask for help in silent mode for how the word sounds. The subscription fee at five dollars a month or $40 US per year seems high for this content, However there is a free month so you can decide for yourself. I was hopeful I could find an app that would be an all in one to teach my child to read Unfortunately this is not that app.

Awesome app!. Always glad to see Levar Burton doing such good things for our kids. The subscription is a good price for the educational value. The only complaint I have is that you can't zoom into pages in books. Some are very small on the screen.

Purchases. Very disappointed that it was only a trial of 5 books unless paying $10 per month. Would have been okay if you could return the books to see others, like a public library, but this is only available for paid subscribers.

Very impressed!!. My son loves this app. The subscription is very well priced for the yearly subscription. It is roughly the cost of 3 new books which put into perspective is worth every penny. Glad to know they add new books monthly cause at the rate my son is going through them we will be done all 400 books soon. Wish there was more of a selection for younger kids age 1 to 4. Also wish they add more first reader books for kids learning to read with the common sight words for kindergarten to grade 1. BUT so far this app has been the best app I have ever purchased. My son reads 5 books before bed ever night and begs to read more. Thank you for making such and incredible app!!

An awesome reading app, with a few rough edges. This app is something the iPad has been waiting for: a lending library for children's books. This means your child can "check out" books to read, and then "return" them when they want new ones, without you having to buy a whole new app each time, and for a monthly subscription price roughly equal to two books. While the app has some great features ("islands" that divide books by subject, a virtual "backpack" and "library card", for instance), it does drop the ball in a few places. For one, right now it only supports one child, meaning if you have two or more kids reading from one iPad, only one gets to pick their favorite subjects, and get their personalized library card. Another issue, though minor, is a lack of "follow-bouncing-ball" style words. While the narration is excellent, and the books show which page the narrator is reading, nothing shows the children which exact word is being pronounced. This is fine for pre-readers, but for kids just starting to read books themselves, it's a bit of a let-down. Other than those fairly minor points, this is a must-have app for every parent who buys children's books in the app store.

Best value for my child's education. This app is $50 a year and I would easily pay more. My children sometimes spend two or more hours a day reading books could I ask for anything more? Hundreds of books at their disposal plus movies - this is a great app. If your children have a birthday I would recommend asking for this as their gift or ask your family to chip in to make this their Christmas gift.

Great books. My daughter loves to read the stories and watch the videos. Once you read a book from that island you should get a sticker from there. It always seems to be stickers from the same island

An amazing APP for kids. I introduced the Reading Rainbow App to my niece and nephew and they absolutely loved it!! After reading the first free book, they wanted more so I subscribed. I was able to add both of them to the same subscription without having to pay more!! Such a great value with hundreds of books that are animated and videos too. I could hear the kids chuckling--they were very entertained! Our favorite part of the app are the videos that are fun and informative. This is a beautiful app that has captured the attention of both my 2yr old nephew and 5yr old niece. A refreshing break from Angry Birds!

Positive screen time. My three year old daughter and I love reading books together on this app. We are constantly visiting the different islands and getting new books. We've read nearly forty books in the three weeks since purchasing the six month subscription. The pace at which the narrators read is nice and slow, which is what you want for pre and early readers. My only knock, and it is a minor one, is that I wish the sticker option could be turned off. Stickers might be a source of motivation to read for some children, but I find it a source of distraction for a child who intrinsically enjoys reading. One other positive is that the interactivity isn't over the top like you see in some literature apps-I find the interactivity yo be minimalist and in no way a distraction. I. can't wait to see how Levar and company develop this app over time. This is an excellent app overall! But don't take my word for it :)

This amazing kids library for home now works right on the original iPad.. Where prior versions might have been a tad slugging even on the iPad 2/3 (and downright unusable on the original iPad), this new version is fluid and reliable on all the devices. Awesome job, devs! As before, there are new books, but still no easy way to find them. Again there are several additions to the a-z animal antics series. (RR TEAM: Please! Mark new books with a "new this month" tag!) Getting books from the library can be frustrating: it's hard to weed the good books from the bad. The Reading Rainbow app takes that drudgery away. My 3 year old loves many of the titles. He even told a stranger recently that his favorite book is "Reading Rainbow." (His favorite book in the app is The Day-Glo Brothers. Go figure.) You could spend an hour at the library every week looking for good books, paying gas or bus fare to get there, or shell out $5 per month on the six month plan. It's an easy choice for me. Raising a child is an expensive affair, but even the $9 per month for the more expensive monthly plan seems like a good deal, considering they've added around 75(?) books since launch. Children need brain food, and this app gives it to them.

There should be an award given for this app. This app is beautiful! Easy to use, engaging, lovely! Kids can read the stories themselves or a parent can read it to them or let the narrator read it aloud just like in the Reading Rainbow show. I grew up with Reading Rainbow and am truly in love with this app. I will definitely be paying for a subscription because it is so worth it. And it's not only books, little ones can go on "field trips" too. Totally interactive and even parents will love listening and watching. I'm telling EVERYONE about this App. Best best best!!!

Reading Rainbow Rocks. My oldest has been using the app for a couple years and now my youngest is now in the app's age range. What sets this app apart from the other similar apps is quality over quantity. Other apps have more books but they do it with comics, cartoon characters and other franchises. Also the videos teach kids about the world that they may not experience in their immediate lives. Especially after the recent US election I appreciate Reading Rainbow's videos showing diverse topics, cultures, and perspectives in a very approachable and appropriate way for kids. Oh and thanks for the iPhone app! Super convenient for car rides and restaurants :)

Not Happy. My little girl loves books, but getting to the library is often very difficult. I downloaded the Reading Rainbow app and fell in love instantly. The imaging is beautiful, the stories are vast. So imagine my disappointment when I learned we were not allowed to "keep" more than five books or "return" any of the books unless we had a subscription. How much is the subscription? $9.99 a MONTH! So if you download this app thinking that you can get by with just the five books, be very diligent and selective about which ones you download. In fact, don't make the mistake of letting your child pick them out if they can't actually read yet, because then you'll be stuck with books your kiddo doesn't actually like and you can't return them.

The Best App and you can 'Take my word for it!'. Of the many apps I have downloaded for my first grade class, this is by far the best! My students have enjoyed every book we have read on the app as a class and they love reading the books on their own during our 'listening to reading' time each day! The videos are perfect, amazing, informational and entertaining! I am learning new things right along with my students! The endless variety of reading is exceptional and worth every bit of the subscription price. You don't have to take my word for it....but my 24 students would tell you to be sure and download it right away!

Could be so much better. I've backed this since the Kickstarter campaign and subscribed since the app was released. I really, really, really want to use this more, but I don't find my son and I using it all that much. Why? Finding books is clunky. There is no listing of books by authors. Often how we find a new book is by reading a book by an author and liking it, then going and finding more of their books. Absolutely no way to do that here. No search. There's a search button, but it tells you search is coming soon. It's been three years... Only five books at a time. The backpack idea is cool, but come on. I should be able to add books to an endless list, like shows/movies in Netflix. Since you can only download five at a time, if my son rejects those five (or we read them all and want another), we have to find another book and wait for it to load, etc. The sticker thing is still 'coming soon'. What's with putting buttons in your app that don't work? Finally, and perhaps biggest to me, although admittedly my son probably doesn't care, the books are low quality images. Children's books that I buy on iBooks look gorgeous on the big iPad Pro. But in Skybrary they don't take up the whole screen and are all pixelated. Offline reading. It's back now, but why was it ever gone? I really wish this app was easier to use and more functional. I really support the mission behind it and want it to succeed. Unfortunately, as it is it doesn't feel like a cutting edge app and service.

Not perfect but worth all the stars.. Libraries are great when you have access. This app is great when you want a lot of choices for great kids books on a mobile device. I read the stories to my daughter all the time and my she will also use the built in narration. Different books have different narrators. All of them have proven to be of excellent quality. My daughter was four when she we started our subscription. The app does lock occasionally . I asked my daughter for her review and she says: "It is a pretty good game. But you should decide[try it] because, I am not you. But it is a very good game."

Great app still developing. I think this app is fantastic. It has a great selection of books. The read to me function is outstanding and really helps children with phonics. The voice acting is clear and engaging. My only gripe is the lack of educational games. Currently there is only one picture match game that doesn't help much in terms of learning. I hope they bring in more word or story trivia type games in the future. Then, I would give this 5 stars. Keep up the good work developers. I am a professional teacher and using this to teach children how to read and discuss. There is a lot of potential in this app! Currently running on iPad Air 1 no crashes or problems as far as I can see.

2 gripes. I love the RR app. My kids have enjoyed it to the fullest, making it a worthwhile purchase. The only flaws I've found are two #1 some books appear in several islands. I found this annoying because if they appear in more than one island it's using up space that another great choice of reading a book could occupy. #2 my kids keep track of there reading minuets daily. I thought it would help myself as we'll as any other people who track minuets daily if the minuets in progress would appear by the day. Not just # of minuets total.

Needs chapter books📕📗📘📙. Great game. Educational for kids. But theirs 4 problems. One is that their should be chapter books for 7,8, and 9 year olds and over. This one is small, but I think its silly that you have more than one of the same book on one island. It just takes up space on that island! The biggest problem is that you only have room for 5 books in Your "backpack". You should make more space. The last problem is that their's only 2 choices of girl backpacks and their's like 5 boy backpacks. It's so not fair! Please fix these problems!😶😐😕 problem is that you only have room for 5

Outstanding!. I am a special educator working with young children. I have a ton of apps and ebooks on the iPad and my school has a subscription to Bookflix on the computer. Trying to get multiple kids to log on to a computer program is very time consuming. This app is wonderful because it has so many great choices of books in one place. I love the idea of checking out books and returning them. It is a good introduction to using a library for young kids. I can have a couple of students listening to great literature while I work in a small group with the rest. I do wish there was better organization of the books- the islands aren't the easiest way to find books, especially with all the overlap. I got the 6 month subscription and for multiple kids it's well worth the cost.

A children's library in your fingertips.... My girls love this app and so do I. I grew up watching Reading Rainbow on PBS and quickly purchased a 6 month subscription but will be renewing it always. My girls choose their books and have it read to them, even my one year old enjoys it. There are non-fiction books and fiction books. You can't look up a specific book to read, but you can scroll through the available books they have every month. There are so many, so they are never bored. Some books are even read by Levar Burton himself, a real treat. Video clips from the Reading Rainbow show can be viewed as well. Overall, an excellent app to foster literacy in children.

My kids love it!. I have had this app for a little over a year, and the subscription is well worth the money. I live in an area with a limited supply of physical childrens books, and the Skybrary has me and my family covered. I read one to two stories from this app when I put my kids to bed most evenings. My son, who can't quite read yet, will sit with the app and make up his own story as he flips through the pages. I have found only one issue thus far. Often, when turning off the audio to the book it will disable touching the interactive sections on the page and turning the page by sliding. I'll have to close the book and reopen it again to get it to work. This happens on both my iPad Air and my wife's iPad 4. Other than that, it's a great app.

Love it. I was an 80s kid so I grew up on Reading Rainbow the show. My two boys LOVE this app. They love choosing their own books and putting them in their back packs. My 3 year old operates this app with no help from me. The selection is based by the age of their profile and are all great choices! They use this app several times a day and prefer it over games. We also read to them personally at least a couple times a day or evening but this app makes books an even bigger part of their life. I am so surprised anyone would have anything negative to say about it.

WOW! My 3yr old Loves It!. It is so nice not to end up reading the same books to my son at bedtime by the end of the week. With this app the stories are interactive and categorized on different sky islands, with a huge library that is so easy my son navigates himself through it. Thank You! The new music island is great, he will surely enjoy it as well. I joined for the six month membership first thing. Reading Rainbow was always one of my favorite shows growing up and I knew that it wasn't going to be a waste of my money, but an investment for my son. GREAT APP GUYS

Awesome Underated App. This app is a great value & should get an award of excellence. There are tons of children's books and a large variety, brilliant graphics, a smidget of animation too and each book is narrated, if you choose to have it read to you, by an actor or actress that truly fits the flavor of each book and really brings it to life. It's just a lot of fun. You can create multiple backpacks with 5 books at a time per child, (ipad2 hsi) dwnlds fast. The vids have less variety and rebuffer at times... But they are more of an fun accent anyway. Thanks Reading Rainbow! Now just add a way to save or mark favorite books and it's perfect.

Library in Africa!. I LOVE this APP. We are missionaries in Africa with Internet once a month and no local library. We load up all 5 backpacks with books each month and are able to have 25 books without any Internet. My girls, 4 and 2 years old, spend 95% of their "IPad time" reading books. I can also let my 4 year old (who reads) select the "read by myself" option and its no different than reading books from the local library. This is our favorite APP!

Beautiful app!. I saw a sponsored post advertising this app on Facebook. Since I was a huge fan of the show when I was a child I was curious. This app is not only beautiful it is stocked full of book and videos for all my kids' interests (ages 6,5,2). I am constantly looking for interactive books and audio books for when we travel. This app has all of that plus games and interesting videos. I havepurchased the 6 months subscription. The only things I would like to see added are a feature to search videos and also the ability to search books by topic.

Very well done. I am a professional education researcher and evaluator, and have been doing a lot of work with apps from various famous and not-so-famous producers. This app contains several features that will definitely increase accessibility and engagement, from the little interactive buttons within the books, to the option to either read the book or have it read to you. I appreciate the ability to do a full test run before committing to the subscription. I also think the $5/month option is easily some of the best money you could spend on a child, and that the quality of the app and the content stand up to that price. Obviously they have just launched the app and will be adding more content over time. Nice job LeVar and crew!

My kids and I adore this. First, hearing my children sing the Reading Rainbow theme every night when we read before bed makes me very happy. The variety of books helps me from going a bit crazy reading the same stories over and over every night. The little interactions excite my children so that they look forward to a new book each night. One small criticism, the sticker interaction is very buggy. No matter what island we choose books from we keep getting the same castle sticker over and over.

The price is more manageable but.... Update: Go to read a book that's been in the backpack for months and it has to re-download. Our subscription is still good, but we're using a slow hot-spot. Just check the subscription/license, DRM shouldn't require re-downloading everything!!! ... Everything that we didn't like about it last time we subscribed is still broken and more. In some books, books that have been in Skybrary for years, animations pop-over the text and stay there whether you tap on them or not, obscuring most the text on that page before you or your child can read it!!! Yes, even and especially in the pre-K books! Rather than fixing this app or the versions for Android/Kindle, it seems that all pretense at quality control has been dropped across the board.

Fantastic, but limited for now. The app itself it great. It holds true to the TV program I remember as a kid. I would just ask for more books and for more field trip videos. My children have read through most books available. Also it's rather annoying to have to go back to each child's profile to switch out "what they like" just to view different books. I would assume that children like more than 3 things and want to read about more than 3, I know my children did. In all, I'm glad we subscribed for the six months, it's quite a significant savings cover the monthly fee. And as my young readers get more comfortable with reading, they can listen to the books first and then go back later and read them to me. I'm sure more books will be added in the future and my children will continue to enjoy the app.

Fantastic. First off I'd like to say I think this app is fantastic! That being said there are two things that if they were added to it would make this app even better. The first is profiles, as it is now you can only set the application up for one child, this is fine if you only have one but I have three ages 6, 9 and 11. The other issue I have is that this app is so fantastic my 11-year-old desperately wishes to use it, unfortunately there aren't really any books appropriate for her age in this application at this time. I am well aware that the description tells you that this app is for ages 3 to 9, however it's so fantastic that if older children wanted to use it I really wish they would add books for older children too. Probably up to age 13 would be ideal.

Absolutely LOVE this app!. I have always loved Reading Rainbow and was so excited to see this app. At first I was a little reluctant to subscribe, but if you get the 6 month subscription that works out to $5 per month-- and it is more than worth it. My grandson now reads books every morning before school instead of watching TV. If only one child in your home enjoys this app it is more than worth the price. The books and videos in this app are the same high quality we have come to expect from Reading Rainbow -- Thank you so much, LaVar Burton, for bringing RR to this new generation.

Renovation fail. We've had the app for Reading Rainbow practically since it started & loved it. My ten year old had every sticker available & the 3 year old just got her profile and first batch of stickers. We used the reading history as a memory timeline. Now no picture, no history - that one is heartbreaking-and it shuts off three or four times every book & we have to keep restarting the book. It's frustrating & the girls are getting fed up. It's sad that constant tweaking has ruined a great app.

LOVE!!!. I am so grateful that I heard about this program! I wish there was more publicity so everyone could know about it! My son is reading so much more because the books read to him so he doesn't have to rely on me (I get tired of reading after reading a few books to him myself). All of the video content available is also amazing. $5 a month is less than one of my coffees and BEYOND worth it for what is available. I do not have a library I can borrow books from that is in a safe area so this is a God send! Also, I met LeVar Burton and he really is a genuinely nice guy! Sign up for the app and website and tell all of your friends so no one misses out!

Simply the best. This is a truly awesome app. There is a huge selection of books spanning a wide variety of genres for different age groups. You can check five books out at a time that are available offline, which is great for car trips and vacations. There are also a number of short clips from the original series, as well as new ones, that supplement the island themes. The clips are educational and also cover a wide variety of topics from practical science to fantasy. In short, there is no shortage of material to provide sparks for your child's imagination.

Mixed review. I don't often write reviews but will for this one. My son was quite excited to use this but it doesn't seem to function well outside of the USA. The books don't load up and I have to open and close the progra to get it to work. I love the interactive books and backpack. I would love some more advanced books. Many seem to be for very young kids. My 4.5 could do with books with more words, some more classics and books for a bit of an older child. I don't really get into the poetry books and neither does my son. I'm trying this out for a month and seeing what I think about it.

We LOVE This App!. We can never get enough of Reading Rainbow here at our household! I can remember watching the show back in the day when it was on PBS, now I think it’s SO great that it was brought back so now my kids can enjoy it as well. I love that there is new video content (with LeVar Burton and he STILL is amazing) and hundreds of books to chose from. I can’t say that I have experienced the same bug problems that others have reported on here. As a family, we like to get together and pick and chose different books to read (especially around bed time)- my kids can’t get enough and never can I! Thank you Reading Rainbow and LeVar for continuing to produce wonderful content. From a very happy mom!

My toddler LOVES this app. I grew up w RR and was SO excited to see it was back and better than ever! We have had this app for almost a year now, so since my kiddo turned a year and a half. She loves it! We still go to the local library every week, but every night during quiet time she wants RR time! I also love that she can tell when she is done, if I say you get three books and one video tonight, then as we go I remind her, you have xyz left then it's bed time, it helps a lot. When it comes time to shut it off she says goodnight and goes to bed happy. She doesn't get much screen time and I am happy this is how she chooses to spend it!

Great to see this!. Loved the old show & all the new ideas/places/things it introduced. They've done a fantastic job instilling a similar feeling of exploration in this app. I downloaded just to try it out & to support an institution of kids' learning that needs to continue. For a 1.0 release, this app is extremely polished, and even has a good deal of free content. It's definitely geared toward younger kids, so ages 3-9 is accurate, but there's an interesting mix of books. The interface is fairly intuitive, fun/easy to use & is responsive on an iPad2. Only comment is that 1-finger swipe doesn't work, and 2-finger swiping is iffy - use the buttons instead. Not sure about the recurring fees, but if that translates to fresh content, more books, and new videos, then ok. I wonder who's producing this now if not PBS ... Does any of the money go to buy books for kids whose parents can't afford an iPad? How about gift subscriptions? Or public libraries? As much as I dislike the idea of in-app purchase, I'd actually donate $10 to a school that's using this, or just to their library... Great job Levar & Co, and thanks.

Very good; should be gender neutral. First of all, this is a very good app for such an ironic mission: to get kids reading books on screens. The layout is great, options seem vast, and once the interface is a little more polished, it should be a real winner. However, as a parent of two girls, I was disappointed to see the host is a--surprise: white male! Also, it seems out of place in this day and age to make a child select their gender to experience reading. I understand the app wants to tailor the experience, but I think that can be done on age and interests alone.

No more trip to Public Library. Amazing Reading App with bonus theme based field trip video that encourages my kids to explore more books in Islands. With it's multi child functionality my twins boys can keep 5 different books in their own customimzed backpacks. No more hassle to loose their books, it also helps to keep track for reading log for school for whole week. Now I don't need to make weekly trips to Public Library as every week App is adding new books and video… My Kids are really loving this App, I am very happy to see their daily reading progress even on the web using ParentDashboard.

Still a great app!. This app is great because not only do my kids love it, I mean LOVE IT, but as a parent I can trust all the content in this app. The diversity of the books available are outstanding. My 5 year is reading about everything from Hanukkah to Sir Cumference math stories to stories about monsters, pirates and fairies...oh my! All the while totally engaged and entertained. And, that's just the books, I could write another review just on the quality and subject depth of the video field trips alone. The world of Reading Rainbow inspires my kids imaginations and sparks conversations about the mysteries of the world, which brings me great joy. It's the starting place for so much that I can then add to and that's truly priceless. All that plus LeVar as their guide, need I say more. Sure, the apps not perfect, no apps are, but I trust that these guys will continue to develop it and that's all I could ask for for my dollars.

Expensive, but still a great value. We bought this for my daughter on a trial basis. She is three years old and many of the iPad apps we get for her end up being fads or temporary diversions. We have now had the RR app for nearly six months and I must say that it is worth the high monthly fee. The books are very well curated, the readers skilled, and the interface is simple enough that she can navigate around the app with minimal intervention. The only downside is that we don't get to read to her as often as we like, because she would rather let the professional narrator tell her the story of Monster Bug!

Don’t be SCAMMED. Dear Fellow Parents please be very careful when considering this app. I was super excited after we downloaded it and had chosen our five books. We decided to purchase the six month subscription only to find it didn’t work. My first step was to call iTunes to troubleshoot thinking my iPad was having issues. They worked with me and decided it was a developer issue. Their advise was to contact the app administrators. The only way I could find to do this was by email, which I did. I waited 48 hours with no response. I emailed a few more times and after no answer decided to start looking for a phone number. On their website it lists an address. After some research I found that this address is not an office building, but rather a single level building full of PO Boxes the “suite 209” they refer to in their address is actually their PO Box number. At this point I called Apple again. After an hour on the phone they agreed that there is NO PHONE NUMBER for this company and that it is suspicious. They, of course were amazing, and returned my money. They also advised I come and leave a review for this app. So, BEWARE EVEN APPLE SUPPORT SAYS IT IS SHADY THAT THIS COMPANY HAS UNREACHABLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Best thing there is. I wanted to provide better quality educational content for my kids like what I grew up on, as opposed to the junk on TV now. I purchased the 6 month subscription, and though I had issues getting the app to recognize the purchase, customer service responded within only a couple hours, and fixed the problem immediately. My daughter hadn't been very interested in books, even before bedtime, but she sits still and loves listening to books on here. I plan on being a subscriber of this for a long time. Thank you, Levar!

App is great. CUSTOMER SERVICE LACKS!!!. I can only hope that the people responsible for this app see this, because I have been trying to get in touch with them pretty much since the first day I signed up. After more than 3 months now, I STILL cannot get into my parent portal on the rrkidz website. My kids and I love this app, but the fact that their customer service lacks so badly, makes it near impossible to continue supporting this. I have emailed numerous times only to get the automated response, but for one or two times. Those times I got a real response, I was assured that someone would be contacting me to help. Then I hear nothing further. Get on it RRKidz. Please help me figure this out so I can give you the 5 stars the app should be getting.

My kids love RR!. I have 5 kids under 8 and they all love listening to the stories. It's so difficult to find good ebooks for the kids that don't cost much. My little ones love having books read to them and this app gives me the extra pair of hands. Can't wait for the separate profiles and more books! Since I downloaded it yesterday afternoon, my kids have read so many books. My youngest, 4 yr old, asked for my iPad to read a book during breakfast. Thanks so much!

The joys of reading. My son is seven. He's not the biggest fan of reading. He strives to do his best, but if he hits a snag while reading he tends to become frustrated and lose the desire to read. This is now his favorite app. His ability to read when and what his mind desires surpasses his frustration. We have tried many learning apps throughout the years. This by far has the most content. It is subscription based, and for me that's fine. I just want him to find out how wonderful a good book really can be.

Good videos and books, easy to use. I like the idea of having books and videos easily available on the iPad for my daughter to access independently. I like that some of the books aren't ones I would select from the library. I like the range and quality of books available. We enjoy the videos a lot. When it comes to the books, we can only use it on 'read to me' mode--we can't read them ourselves because the font is waaaaay to small. Seriously, I can barely read it--no way my 4 year old can see it. Idk if this is just how it's working on our device or not... This works out ok for us anyway, though, since my daughter reads so much--I don't mind her listening instead of reading the books.

No More Portable Backpack!!. The developers have just made traveling with little ones MUCH more difficult if you want to give them access to a set of digital books! One of the best things about the app was the ability to preload a set of books into the backpack at home before setting out on the road where wifi access would be spotty at best. It had become one of our special household rituals! The new upgrade has removed access to the app, the backpack, and everything when it cannot establish a wifi link. This is a very poor and not well thought out choice on the part of the developers. Please change this back!

Pretty solid, impressive. Was pleasantly surprised at the app, has a fair bit of polish to it. It's obvious that considerable thought went into it's construction to appeal to to its target base. The backpack, sticker, island features are well done. The IAP is fairly expensive. I don't know what the cost to them is though so to that end, it may be a fair price. It does have a bug or two that are hopefully on the agenda to be ironed out. Once a profile is made, there is no editing that profile. When you create one, you pick a age setting and the books then accessible are tailored to that age. Different kids read at different levels though so I ended up picking too low of an age but there is no way to change that now. I think my option now is to delete the app and start over. I do hope profile editing comes in a update.

Don't log out after you sign in. I originally enjoyed this app because my kids are readers and they love the app. Recently, I did a full system reset to my Ipad and downloaded the app again and have been attempting to sign in since. It's been going 3 weeks!!! I contacted their customer service who implied I forgot my password among other things. I signed up through Itunes, so that was not even a remote possibility since I am able to still sign into Itunes without any issues. The last contact from them was send them screen shots of the messages I am getting when I try to sign in. I did this which they said they would forward to the tech support who would contact me. I AM STILL WAITING!!! If I could sign back into the App then it would be perfect I believe the content is good even though what you can do with the books is limited compared to other Apps with books. I have paid for the full year and now do not have access!!! WHAT DO I DO??? My money is now going to waste because I cannot access the app anymore. If someone in reading rainbow Tech Team could see this review and make contact AND RESOLVE the issue then I would be grateful, as my kids would again have access to the many books on the app

We love it. I see that folks with iPad 1 are having difficulties with the app. We have the latest generation iPad, and it has worked beautifully for us. My three year old girl and nine year old boy enjoy having their own backpacks and we have really enjoyed all of the books. We don't have much on our iPad - 16g - except for a few games. I don't know how that has affected our ability to use the app. Our books are downloading (wifi) quickly and it is easy enough to understand that my three year old (not yet reading) can return and choose books herself. There is an introductory price of $30 for six months and I feel that the app is definitely worth the money for that price. Heard about the app on Nerdist episode with Levar Burton.

Doesn't Work Outside U.S.. As someone who splits my time between Asia and the U.S. this app seemed like the perfect thing to help me with keeping my daughter up to level in her English development. The dashboard is slick and the interface is easy for children to use. (My daughter is 4 and can use it easily) However, this app is pretty much non-functional outside of the U.S. Connections with their books servers are almost impossible to establish and if it does connect, download speed is like being on dial-up. Also, VPNs don't fix this. Additionally, the support of RRKidz is poor. I've emailed them twice and both times have received no response. I expect more from the company you champion Geordi. In the words of Pacard, when it comes to fixing your customer support and servers, you should "Make it so."

Extremely Disappointing!. When I first discovered this app, I was so excited about its appealing layout and variety of interactive books. Unfortunately, I was only able to download 2 books and then the app froze up and I haven't been able to view a book since. Reading Rainbow support hasn't responded and it has been two weeks. It is a shame that Levar Burtan and Reading Rainbow, icons in children's educational television, have put there name on such a poorly functioning app. Clearly, they didn't take time to work out the problems before placing it on the market. I've decided to spend my money on Scholastic's Storia app which works better and actually has a better variety of books. Check it out!

Subscriptions. Like the app a lot. Have a major issue. You need to allow the subscriptions to be gifted. Have several grandchildren and want to gift this to them but can only do so as a iTunes gift card whose donation amounts are not the same as your subscriptions prices. Makes this very difficult to gift. Please address this. Thank you. Also since my grandchildren are using this app would like to up to a year subscription and you do not make allowance for this either. Please help
