Very good so far; close to great. This is a beautiful first effort at an iPad app. But it's missing a few key iPad features that make it just short of greatness: (1) AirPlay. This is one iOS's key technologies, and it would simply transform the experience to be able to project audio + video to home speakers and HDTV. Please implement. (2) Background audio. Please allow the audio to run in the background while doing other tasks. You should be able to start a radio broadcast and then shift over to Safari, etc., as with any other music-playing app. (3) Bookmarking. The app should automatically bookmark where you were when you quit the app, and resume where you left off. It should re-start to the video library shelf each time. (4) If it hasn't been already (I can confirm later today!), it should be Retina-enabled for the new iPad. Thanks!

AirPlay works great. If you have an iPad and apple tv, just double click and swipe to the right while this is playing, click on the airplay button and select appletv. You will then be able to AirPlay stream this in hd. Really great. The subtitles actually appear on your iPad!

Only works after updates and reinstallations. Incredibly frustrating app, generally crashes on login. Got a moth-to-month sub for my father, a Met ticket subscriber every year since 1958, yes 65 years - he loves opera and the Met so much he got a sub starting when he was 18. To get this app to work, I’ve had to: update the latest Apple o/s patch; and/or repeatedly uninstall and reinstall the app. I “restore purchases” and it works for a week or two and them i have to try all over. This is for both a modern iPhone and iPad. So how do you think the average Met aficionado will do with an app that requires this kind of fiddling? Never seen anything like it. Terrible.

Free Previews during the pandemic. Thank you MetOnDemand for showing free HD operas! It is a great service. So important now, when elderly people have to stay indoors. I just watched the 3rd opera with my parents - Il Travatore. My mom and I used to watch Met HD operas at the movies, but I’ve never imagined that my 85 yrs young dad will watch opera! And these are wonderful operas with great casts. I hope this program continues in April.

App needs an update. This app has not been updated since 2019 and has several bugs including the lack of remote button presses. The menu button fails to respond on a regular basis as does to play/pause button. The result is the inability to pause an opera or go back once you’ve start one. I have tried it both as a free and paid subscriber. Same problem both ways. Excellent content but extremely frustrating. Beware before you subscribe.

Terrible selection. I don't know who the curator for this application is, but after paying month after month for a couple of years, you'd expect the Met to give you access to good quality videos of some strong performances. However, most of them are from several years back, with the poorest visual definition you might expect and sound with no remastering at all. They have more audio of performances than videos as well. In any case, I would not recommend this application any more after being patience for quite some time.

Just needs a few things to be amazing.. Like a lot of others, I almost don't want to says anything negative because I really love that this exists and that the met provides such easy access to their archives. Still, it is far from perfect. As others have mentioned the fact that it does not remember your place can be a pain, especially when an accidental push of the home button means you have to start over and find your location. Luckily they break it down into chapters, but it's still something I'm used to in nearly every other app (even safari saves your place in the middle of a video if you change apps). Perhaps the biggest complaint, though, is that the audio seems incredibly compressed. When a full chorus is singing it gets really tinny and kind of unbearable. I've listened to the same sections streamed through the met's website and the sound quality there is much better. I have a great connection (about 10mbps) so i'm pretty sure its not that, and the video always looks pretty good. You won't notice if you're listening through the iPad speaker, but plug in headphones and it can be distracting. Actual airplay support (not just mirroring) would also be a plus, and would maybe convince me to get apple tv! Anyway, I hope they improve it, because I love both the service and the level of quality that I find in all of the met's productions.

Great potential. So disappointed that I was never able to get this app to work on either my Apple TV or phone. The free nightly streams play fine, but I received a number of different errors every time I tried to log into the new account I made. I tried on a few different days to no avail. I want to pay for a subscription, but the apps won’t even recognize my account during the free trial. Such a bummer because this app really has wonderful content.

Finally, it works with AirPlay and Apple TV. It has been a long wait, but this new version works with AirPlay properly. Subtitles are now displayed at the bottom of the video on the TV, rather than being left behind on the iPad when streaming to Apple TV. And background playback is great. You can use other apps on your iPad while you watch the opera on your TV.

Good, but could improve. Every content owner wants to provide their own streaming service to cut out the middle man and collect all the profits, but delivering first-class software and infrastructure presents different challenges than content production. This app is not bad — they’ve fixed a number of issues I see in earlier reviews over the five years this app has been out. It would still be nice to use AirPlay on free previews (and return to them after leaving the app), and browse by artist. Also, like some other reviewers mention the sound quality could be better. I suspect it is being compressed too much, though the video quality is good.

New subscriber, app unreliable. The last thing The Met needs is an expensive app that doesn’t work, but here we are. I wanted to see Der Fliegende Hollander from March 2020 in the worst way and it final appeared in streaming. I signed up for a full year of On Demand. Now it doesn’t recognize I am a full subscriber on iPad or iPhone. Sometimes it works. I have deleted and re-added. Contacted Apple who confirms I am all set. So it’s a serious disconnect.

Poor hosting, therefore unsubscribing. Love opera and the Met, but the failure rate of this app’s host servers is truly frustrating. The content will stop streaming a few times through each title, and resolution drops in and out all the time. These ubiquitous issues are suffered on our Samsung TV apps, iPads, Apple TVs, and iPhones. Again, wonderful content, but with the reliability of a teenager. I’m afraid that we’re compelled to unsubscribe. Please notify us when you get your game together.

Great until it’s not. I purchased a subscription to Met Opera On Demand for my dad. He loves the content. There are a great many performances available, going back quite a long time, and including both HD and SD content, with lots of new content. My dad is a lifelong opera fan, and he is happy as a clam watching or listening to great opera every night. Unfortunately, the app on our iPad has started crashing every time it’s opened. This makes it useless on that platform. We already bought a new iPad because the app was crashing on our old one. Tech support kept telling us they knew about a bug and that it had been fixed. Not so in our case. I get that older technology becomes outdated and stops running some apps. That’s on Apple. But this is a newer model — iPad Air Wi-Fi running the latest OS (I updated as a troubleshooting measure, to no avail). The subscription is quite expensive. I expect full functionality from the app. You can’t simply ignore customers who have lost the ability to use what they have paid for on your so-called supported platforms. This is IOS we’re talking about for Pete’s sake. Fortunately we can still use the app with our smart TV. I would advise people not to invest the money if you are counting on this app to work with an iPad, especially if it is an older model. We are sympathetic to the Met during this difficult financial time for the performing arts. Nevertheless, they should seriously consider a shake-up among their contracted app developers.

Amazing array of Content, but Terrible Customer Service. I am very unhappy with the amount of time and effort it took me to resolve an issue. It felt to me that MetOpera started from a position of not believing me despite repeated sending of proof that I had paid for the subscription and my telling customer service that I had been using the app until just a few days ago without incident. Instead I had to make repeated calls to apple which totalled roughly 1.5 hours of time and send repeated emails to MetOpera as well. Rather than thinking there may have been an issue on their end (which indeed there was) instead they made me do all the legwork. Very frustrating experience and a big waste of my time.

Content is great, app needs work. For the most part, the app does what it needs to do: playback content. I rarely experience buffering issues or drops in quality. I agree with other reviewers that it would be nice if the quality were better (especially the audio). However, in my experience there are some persistent bugs. Right now what’s frustrating me is the inability to pause playback on Apple TV. To “pause” I have to exit and then return to the app when I’m ready. Pressing play/pause has no discernible effect.

Lacks Basic Fuctionality. The app does not go widescreen when sending the image from the iPad to a TV. Also, there is no resume fuction. Therefore, everytime you pause to do something else, when you return you have to restart the opera from the beginning. Yes, I know I can fast forward, but I don't appreciate having to do so every time. Buying or renting the same production through iTunes is a far better option. Unfortunately there are far less operas available in iTunes Movies. And another thing ... Not a single La Traviata!? Really!?

Persistent “connection error” in the recent months. Though the app does need some improvements I used to fairly enjoy it until a few months ago when all of a sudden I suddenly cannot anymore use it. I keep getting a “connection error”. (Needless to say I don’t have any internet connection issues with any other app or web access). It’s literally non functional. Not sure how this issue could have been released and not fixed for so many months.

Read the reviews!. LOVE LOVE LOVE the updates. A couple of minor skips, but it really is wonderful. Especially the stop and return feature! Thank you for fixing this app. Being virtually bed ridden this allows me to be in the theatre with the best seat in the house! Sorry about only four stars....I have faith in you to continue the good work and fix those petty little glitches.

Very frustrating. I continue to be charged for a subscription that doesn’t actually allow me access to the site or app. The “manage my subscription” button is on a loop of pulling me back to my account that tells me that I’m already subscribed or the app itself just crashes. There needs to be a website to access these archives or the app just needs to be completely shut down all together.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!. I just watched my first opera from this app in HD on my HDTV with hifi sound. Rigoletto actually. There are still a few hiccups (e.g. video freezing) which may be user errors. Overall the experience was amazing! For me this is the killer app for the Apple TV and really shows the power of Ipad Airplay. I really appreciate the quality of the multi-camera HD recordings. The editing keeps the video interesting and the close-ups deliver an unmatched emotional impact. Met and Apple, keep up the great work!

Not buggy for me!. I tried the week trial on an iPad Pro and an Apple TV 4K. Everything worked fine. The content is Excellent after all this IS the Met. However there are several disappointments. The audio is only PCM stereo on the Apple TV 4K. NO Atmos audio or Dolby 5.1 Also NO 4K video. The subscription is pricey. I have a AVR and full Atmos speaker setup connected to the Apple TV 4K. The Met app audio was mediocre compared to the competition like Carnegie+ which has Atmos and Dolby 5.1 audio and also many 4K Operas. Since the Met subscription is $15 and Carnegie+ is $8 I believe the Met sub is way overpriced… close but no cigar until the Met drops the price or gives out promo codes…. FWIW Carnegie+ is available as a Apple TV “channel” not as an app.

I watched an opera titled “Buffering”. I was so excited to download this app, but I had trouble from the start. I tried to register, but it told me my email was invalid. (Which it was not) After I finally jumped that hurdle on the third attempt, I tried watch anything, but all I got was the spinning wheel of death or a blank screen. Not one performance would come through. How truly disappointing, I was so happy to finally watch opera, only to be let down. This app definitely needs some maintenance, this is certainly not how one of the better known opera companies should be represented.

Mostly great app. I love the ability to watch these great performances on demand. However, at least on the Apple TV, during playback, the app will occasionally become unresponsive to the remote and will need to be force quit. I’ve also had subtitles stop displaying randomly. Fix these bugs and the app will definitely be five stars.

New Version is Terrible. What happened? Why would you downgrade the app? Now it can’t be used in landscape orientation on iPad (the only way I use it and the best way to watch content), all my favorites are missing, all prior watch history is gone… I don’t understand why this would be done with no prior warning. I pay a lot for this service, and I expect better.

Excellent App. Works flawlessly on my Apple TV and sound system. Only complaint is iPad app favorites do not synch up with Apple TV. Also the Met takes its own time and selection in getting new Operas up. Only the HD versions are worth seeing which is a great pity as some of the greatest performances are older and not HD. Obviously a 4K option would be welcome.

Don't wast your money on subscription. We loved this app until it stopped working. Last update was supposed to fix a launch issue. I wish they fixed their employees and hire a real developer. Somebody who can finally get this app to work. I am going to claim my money back. Advise for those who consider to have this app: "Please, do not waste your money." Developer should hang his/her head in shame.

Design. Technically, this app doesn’t work well. Updates are always problematic and seem to reorganize the presentation without any apparent benefit. The developers have taken on more they can deliver. Still, it is the Met, and if you can get through, the opera is great.

Hot mess. As the title says, this app on the Apple TV is a hot mess for subscribing. I had to try at least 30 times before I finally was able to (apparently) sign up for the 7-day free trial (very generous /s) and billing thereafter. Even though I got signed up, however, it didn’t unlock the app, so I never got access to the content. Instead, I spent further hours going around in a circle of it asking me to subscribe and then telling me I’d already subscribed. Despite multiple attempts I have not been able to see a single opera because the app thinks I’m not a subscriber. There’s only so many times one can bang one’s head against a brick wall before giving up. I like the Met but will try the English Opera or some of the various other streaming options out there now, with confidence they will at least take my money and provide the promised access in return.

I love Met, but this app is outdated. I go to met very very frequently and am absolutely charmed by Met recording’s video/sound quality. However, here are a few suggestions to make this app a bit modern (maybe closer to the Deutsche Grammophon apps): - allow offline contents please - fix the subtitles (if you turn on the subtitles and leave the app playing in the background, the subtitles will not appear unless you go back to the homepage and re-enter the opera again) - now, the dream - to make this app truly cutting-edge, the Met should offer viewers to switch between multiple angles. Sometimes the director’s cut may cause the users to lose sight of the breathtaking grandeur of the opera’s staging. The ability to switch between, wide angle and close-ups would be truly amazing. - since for every opera the met has already prepared massive amounts of information on the program pamphlet, why not also provide them here on the app in addition to the just synopsis.

Letdown for Audiophiles. There is a lot to love about the app and service if you are an opera fan, but I have on gripe for at least the TV OS app: while watching an opera, I can't Airplay the sound through my stereo system. Every other app I've used can do this, but this app fails. It seems like you'd want to cater to an audiophile audience with this app.

Disappearing subtitles; limited languages. Great app!! My only issues concern the subtitles. They only appear in the first (new or repeated) viewing of any given opera. If I am “working on” one show over time, I stop seeing the subtitles and I can’t get them back, even with the subtitle menu. Also! I think it should be *consistently* possible to see subtitles in the language of the libretto, e.g. Italian for Puccini, rather than just an assortment of commonly spoken languages, which may or may not include the language used.

App has gone downhill. I used to love watching operas on this app. It was seamless to watch an opera, easy to continue watching an opera that I had not yet finished, and the quality was wonderful. Now my continue watching queue is wiped out and if I have to stop in the middle of an opera, when I go back to the video (after having to search for it again), it doesn’t pick up where I’ve left off. The worst quality is that the app stops at the end of each track so I have to keep hitting play throughout the opera. The app works fine on my Roku and it seems to be okay on my laptop (when I watch through the met opera website); however, on my iPhone it is a mess. I don’t know what the developer did, or what they were trying to achieve, but they have ruined this app. It is such a shame since the content that is available is priceless. What isn’t priceless is the $15 I pay a month for a now unusable app. Please go back to the old version. It was perfect.

Great potential. I love met operas and this app delivers full catalogue that is pure delight to watch. Unfortunately the app is very buggy and I hope developer is working on improving it to meet the quality of the content presented. Few suggestions for upgrading the app: - improve sound quality. At home I use very good sound equipment and it is obvious that the sound used in even HD streams is very compressed. Operas are ultimate sound test and I know how good opera can sound if you have the right equipment. Ideally you should provide an uncompressed sound for ultimate experience. - please provide the ability to download streams and audio recordings for offline use. I like to stream audio recordings when I drive and every time my car goes through the poor or no signal area I have interruptions that I hate. - improve the info and bio on the recordings and artists that you showcase. They deserve all the credit and currently are treated like sub notes on the otherwise excellent content - allow us to ‘favorite’ recordings that we love and would like. I would like to have ‘My list’ feature prominently placed on the app home page. - add 4k HDR content for newer recordings. 1080p is so outdated.

I’m loving this app!. I use it while driving, at home on iPhone, laptop and Apple TV. I haven’t had any technical problems, as long as I have a decent signal strength. The annual rate is the best deal. The resume function is excellent and always picks up an audio or video file where I last stopped. Please put “Angels” on, as well as the latest Thais.

Squandered opportunity, again!. The Met Player folks never seems to drop the opportunity to disappoint. I had high hopes that I could avoid the clunky error-prone, stuttering, glitchy unreliable desktop version (to which I have been a subscriber for years now), but they managed to mess this up as well too. The 2 stars are for the content, which is the excellent Met stuff, let down by this substandard app. As others have noted, audio is poor, no support for AirPlay (not even just the audio), stuttering and glitchy streaming ... Sad. I'm not sure why their streaming is so poor, but they were down for several days last year, and I don't think they have fired them yet. And, forget about customer support, all I've ever got from them is form responses. A sad, sad, disappointment and an embarrassment.

More Accesability Please. I was so excited to see that this existed, but was hoping for an opportunity to use it with my Iphone 5 and Apple TV. I've been hoping for a way to watch opera on the Apple TV and can't wait for them to figure that out. Until then its rather useless to watch such big beautiful productions on handheld devices, but I'm thankful for the attempt at progress and can't wait until I can watch them on my large television!

Great great great. Requires good wifi bandwidth -- i.e. a cable internet connection through wifi; DSL is not enough. We subscribed to cable Internet just to use this app, and it works. The sample clips will show you whether your bandwidth is adequate. The login facility is indeed clunky. I wonder how many phone calls the help desk gets to reset passwords. The controls are a little irritating. Example: the user can add a favorite to the favorites list, but it is not the aria or track that is added, but the entire opera. That's no better than just knowing which operas you like. Wouldn't it be better to be able to watch and listen to all your favorite arias one after another? Content: absolutely great. I should say more about how wonderful it is to have access to these recordings on the iPad, but I hope the prospective subscriber can imagine, or maybe has seen the HD screenings in theaters. The sample makes you want to sign up right away. Very worth the subscription prices, monthly or yearly. Don't miss "The Audition."

Fantastic, but.... I hesitate to even say anything negative about this app because to have such access to operatic archives such as are included here is, indeed, a tremendous privilege. The only "problem" that I have with the app as it is right now is that if one switches to a different app in the middle of viewing or listening to something on Met Player, when returning to Met Player to continue viewing the previously uncompleted selection one must start over in the selection process and then jump to the location where one last left off. This seems like a relatively simple fix, so hopefully it will be addressed in future updates. Thanks, Metropolitan Opera and Peter Gelb for your great gift to all of us opera lovers worldwide!! Mark Mowry

Cannot access app.. Update to initial one star rating. Met responded quickly providing a user name, which did work, while email address had not. There is a broad selection of operas. Chose Carmen, with Elian Garanca in title role. Cinematic, like a movie. Was expecting just a face to stage camera. This was exciting and so different. Bravo! And of course the opera, music, sound just fab. Great concept and well done. Can sign in via web, but not app, which responds that password is incorrect. Just signed up for annual subscription. Let's get this right.

Terrible. I gave this app as a present for Christmas. It has not worked properly since I downloaded it. The screen flickers on and off of the screen. The video selection is very small as well as no new content. (They say once a month) As a current subscriber myself I am very dissapointed. The non use of Airplay is a disgrace. Mirroring flat out does not work. An update to include airplay and some new or old content would be a great improvement. Lots of room for improvement here folks. Ipad 2 user.

Once happy now distressed. For several years, we have watched met opera on demand with pleasure every Saturday followed by a zoom discussion. A month we lost access and though I have tried multiple times to reactivate my app I have failed I even set up new email address to establish a new account and that too has failed. When I try to activate I get a message to subscribe. When I try to resubscribe I get a message to activate. This is the most unfriendly app I have ever used.,

White horizontal bar on bottom. I just downloaded the app. My wife has subscription. We have enjoyed opera on big screen. Our technique that’s works is stream from laptop with HDMI connection to AV receivers. Got new iPhone. Download app both on TV and IPhone screen an annoying white horizontal line. Hire technicians from you tube please. When I use the device and sign into the website it works. Fix the app

Breathtaking!!!. After the seven day trial, I opted for the year subscription. Unfettered access to this repertoire is such a magnificent gift from Mr. Gelb and Met Opera!!! I , however, agree with many of the points brought up in previous posts. Bookmarking would be an awesome feature. One can notice slight audio degradation at times. AirPlay support would take this over the top!!! Overall, this product is priceless. It is my favorite part about owning an iPad!!! Hands down!!!

Awesome but needs some updates. First let me say that I LOVE this app. I'm currently on the 7 day free trial to the on demand service but will definitely keep my subscription going. There are 2 things that would make this a 5-star app: 1. Ability to exit the app and continue listening to audio files. This is much like listening to natively stored music or pandora, and would give you the freedom of doing other things on your iPad while listening. Currently in order to listen you're locked in to that screen. 2. The app should remember where you left off in each video/audio opera. I rarely have time to listen or watch one in its entirety in one sitting, but would like to quickly start again where I left off. To summarize, love the app and love having all this beautiful music so easily accessible, and a few updates to the app itself would make this truly stellar.

You Ruined this App. I have watched hundreds of hours of opera on this app over almost a decade. The app is now unwatchable. It no longer plays in landscape mode on my iPad. “Full screen” is now barely 1/3d of the screen. The quality of the picture is worse, and I couldn’t get the substitutes to appear. If this would have been the quality of the app nine years ago, I never would have signed up.

Shows promise but needs polish. It does the trick -- it is possible to watch opera on the iPad. As has been pointed out in other views, this app is missing certain features that other iPad media apps include, such as full airplay support (not just mirroring) and better resume functions. Hopefully continuing developer attention can turn this into an app that fully leverages the potential of the iPad+appleTV combination.

Retraction. Ok, Met. I owe you an apology. I wrote the [below] brief review during the free streaming, then paid for a subscription in July. Since then, the app has worked flawlessly, both on my smart tv and my iPad. I am enjoying every minute. (From June) Works great on my iPad, but when I can get the app to work on my smart TV — which is always a challenge— it soon crashes.

Keeps crashing please fix. I paused while watching one of the shows on my Fire TV and when I tried to play the show, the app crashed completely. Now it does not recognize my email address when I tried to sign in again. I even tried a different email but it kept saying the new email was invalid. I was basically forced to cancel my subscription. What a shame. The catalog of operas looked so promising, the quality of the shows was top notch but this app has too many flaws and bugs. I implore the developers to fix this issue. Judging by the many negative reviews here, some action/accountability needs to be taken. Many people share the same sentiment.

iPad split screen for forScore. I really enjoy the app and the content it has to offer! I’ve loved Met On Demand for years. As a singer, I like to follow scores while watching/listening to the opera. It would be great to have split screen compatibility with forScore, so viewers can take in the opera and follow along in the music with any scores they have on their iPad. Thank you!

version 2.3.2 still buggy. For audio-only performances, the track list does not update the “now playing” label’s location. It just sits on the first track. Two versions ago, a bug-free version that worked beautifully on audio-only performances, “now playing” updated continuously and accurately. If play is started from the performance banner’s play arrow, one track plays, and then stops. For continuous play, the performance must be started from the track list. Two versions ago, this app was fine. Now it’s very annoying. Please fix posthaste!!

Where have the subtitles gone. The performance of this app is so erratic it is hardly worth having. For the past few weeks no subtitles appear on screen and MetOpera doesn’t seem interested

Absolutely Annoying. Huge problem with using app as they base everything on their own login .. so I paid for the app through iTunes but it didn’t register, offering me a free trial if I gave card details to subscribe ( which I’d done already ) .. . red lettering under the login page said do you want to use iTunes ( after I’d paid ) which I’d press and it simply disappeared and nothing else happenned. I applied for refund. So disappointing. Also check the needed specifications, which I found on a page ( that said use Amazon to pay ) It said things like can only use M1 chip or layer. And I got an email saying the live streams are over but they have a vast library .. i knew that already .. just not what one would expect from such a resource

Terrible App. I am very disappointed in the app. I organised a monthly subscription and it still won’t let me view any of the on demand performances. I would not recommend this app to anyone. There is not even any contact details to inform service support at the Met on the Opera, app or website. There goes my money!! Not happy at all.

Not quite 5 stars. This app works with the Metropolitan Opera's streaming service, whereby a subscription gets you access to a growing catalogue of video and audio recordings of the company's performances. If you have ever been to one of the Met's HD cinema screenings, this is that experience exactly, now available to view on demand on your iPad (but not iPhone or iPod Touch). The service claims to be 2-3 months behind the cinema release, which is a pretty generous estimate, but there is still a lot of material available here, with the promise of new performances being added on a regular basis. I've been waiting for this app for a long time, as until now the service required you to either hook your computer up to your television (a pain) or watch on your computer screen (a bigger pain). Having access via the iPad reminds me why I love it so much (and if anything will persuade me to trade in iPad 1 for the new retina screen version, this app might well be it). The picture and sound are good, and the interface easy to navigate. However, it is seriously hobbled by not having Airplay functionality, so that you can stream the video to your television. This is something that should be addressed, and I imagine that a lot of users would also like the opportunity to download operas to watch offline later. It would also be nice to have an iPhone/iPod Touch version, not so much for the video, as for the large number of audio recordings (these go back decades and if you are into historical performances, you will be in heaven at the choice). There's a small bug which needs to be ironed out: while watching the opera, the clock/battery information bar at the top of the screen does not disappear. This is very distracting and needs to be fixed up. When it is, and an Airplay option is added, this will become a five star app, but in the meantime, if you like opera, you should consider signing up for the 7 day free trial.

Splendid. It is a robust technology, decisively superior to medici.tv with its technical failures. So much is outstanding but the more recent HD material is little short of sensational. The riches of the Met very often yield the best singers and best direction and design. Just watched Massenet’s Cinderella and it was spectacular as was Donizetti’s Elixir of Love. With these and so many others you feel you grasp at last the promise of this most challenging of art forms. The sheer excellence of this house is what impresses, a treasure of world culture and offered via big screen tv. Never tire of it.

Wide screen support!. Could you update the ipad app to support wide screen of new models? This is vitally important!

Subtitles don’t seem to appear. I’ve had to start watching on the laptop because I can’t see the subtitles on the app.

Dreadful app. Awful app, doesn't work on my Apple TV or iPhone. Don't waste your time on it. Great pity.

Cant get subscription to work:(. Not sure why it has to be so difficult to link subscription to the app. Paid for it but can’t use it.

We like Opera, but not this size. We bought subscription for Met Opera on Demand, we can watch in the iPad, but we are old, we need a bigger screen, our Laptop at least, we thought in our Apple TV could be great but this is not a choice, we are cancelling our subscription.

I love this app. This app is awesome for people who love opera and classical music.

Awesome App- Finally on iPhone!. I absolutely love Met on demand and have used it for about a year and a half on my computer and recently occasionally on a Samsung smart tv. Up until now I have been using safari to access Met on demand on my iPhone which has been fraught with issues, but it worked. Thank you so much for finally releasing an iPhone version!! I never understood why the app was available for the longest time only on iPad. If you like opera, you need this app. It is absolutely fantastic! It is one of my most used apps along with SiriusXM for Met opera radio!! Now if they'd only make an audio only option for all the videos, Met on demand would be perfect...

Search crashes on iPad with space. Crashes every time I tap the space bar in search mode. Crashes ever time I use punctuation like an apostrophe. Can’t display in landscape mode. Usless.

Subtitles vanish. If you never pause the stream, you’re fine. Otherwise, any pause will make the subtitles disappear, even if you skip y the next chapter. Quite unfortunate.

Crashes all the time. Crashes on both IPad 2 & 3 after login.

Crashes on iPhone X. Hate to rate with one star, love the app on iPad, but this may be the only way to contact the developers as the Support link is down too

Apple TV version. While we love watching the gorgeous Met operas on our TV, we are totally frustrated that the TV version of the App doesn’t recognize the pause/resume button of the Apple remote. Neither does it allow movement within a video segment by dragging the marker along the time line. In fact its time line display is confused.

Great choice substandard technology. This should be a wonderful app for opera lovers. Instead, it’s frustrating. The sound distorts in loud passages and opera is full of loud passages. The video can not remember where you stop. Today it lost the opera I partially watched on the weekend. It is totally missing from the menu or search. The Met should hire someone who knows modern video streaming.

Excellent update. The latest update brings the app up to 5 stars. It now has Airplay with subtitles, with always the brilliant HD. I can now watch operas over a couple of days as it finally remembers where I am and what I'm watching. Great improvements! Love it!

Music phenomenal, but app buggy. I am on my free trial for this app. The selection and music are fantastic, but the app itself is buggy and regularly malfunctions and crashes. I think that it has crashed more often than it has functioned for me. I wish that there were a way for me to access these wonderful offerings, without having to endure these technological pains. Time for an upgrade?

Metopes on demand. Metopera has not received my payment

Success. This app was tricky to set up to send to the television from the IPad, through Apple TV. There is no in-app AirPlay. AirPlay has to be turned on from the control centre, and the subtitles won't show unless mirroring is also selected. We also had to turn off the "lock/unlock" feature in settings on the IPad so it would still play with the cover closed. Very distracting otherwise. Lastly, we changed the aspect settings on our television, as the mirroring default sent a small picture. Finally, success and an excellent result. We would suggest that a Met Opera button be added to the AppleTv home screen (like NetFlix, YouTube, Vimeo, etc). This would be much easier

Great app when it works. As you already know from other reviewers, the app‘ version for Apple TV needs to be updated. The navigation functions have stopped working about a month ago. If you will not fix this soon, I will cancel my subscription!

What a shame.. Don’t waste your time on this app: constant streaming issues with no video and audio only, hi-res suddenly and indefinitely becoming low-res, subtitles that hardly ever work.....and more. I was so looking forward to watching the opera. To no avail, I just gave it one more try, only to experience the same crap. After reading reviews, I see these issues have been going on for quite sometime. Why can’t this be fixed? Bryan

What would make this a 10 star. If this app could stream the live in HD stream concurrent to it streaming in theaters than this would be an incredibly cutting edge experience! Do it!

Latest Version Doesn’t Work. This version doesn’t work in landscape orientation on iPad, as well as other issues…not syncing with my account, Resume, Favorites, etc.

Subtitles. I LOVE being able to see these gorgeous productions! And I have always loved opera! But subtitles don’t work most of the time. When I’m introducing someone to opera (as I do a LOT) subtitles help so I don’t have to talk through it all.

Opera on Demand. I adore the concept and the selection seems pretty extensive, but, $15 dollars a month is far too expensive for one genre of music. Please reconsider your subscription fees. Compare it to other music streaming methods. Thank you

Needs AirPlay. We use this now via our Apple TV using mirroring. It works, but the app should be updated to use Apple's AirPlay directly. That should be part of any IOS app in today's world. I would welcome an update & would then raise the rating to 5.

NO AIRPLAY. The app works as advertised with two caveats : 1) No AirPlay 2) Does not remember where you left off, so resuming can be a challenge. Without AirPlay I can't enjoy the show on the big screen TV and big speakers, so the app is worthless to me.

Very buggy. Can’t restore iTunes subscription. Doesn’t work. Apple TV app doesn’t work with Apple TV remote. In other words no pausing fast forwarding or even stopping without completely getting out of it, and then having to restart the opera or the scene. Very difficult to use.

Improvement needed.. This app as well as your web application needs serious updating. Why can’t you rewind and forward between scenes? What if there is a favorite part of the opera that you would like to play over again without having to play the entire scene? This is ridiculous

Horrible App. A total waste of time. I signed up to subscribe and got to watch Turandot. Next time I opened the app, it wouldn’t play anything. And when I clicked on “Restore Purchases,” it just crashed. Needless to say, I deleted the app and canceled my subscription.

Constantly crashing. This app has always been buggy, even with all the updates. It hasn’t worked for months - it will enter the home screen (and if I’m lucky, the login screen) and then immediately crash. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling...same deal. I’ve even tried using it on other iPads...still crashes.

But reports. 1. Subtitles disappear when switching away from the app and then switching back 2. I keep getting logged out of the app. Why is this necessary? Too frustrating. Ended up cancelling during the trial period. Will try again if this app is updated with fixes

astonishingly poor sound quality. I subscribed, and then was astonished by the terrible sound quality. Shrill noise artifacts accompany and distort every note sung by a soprano. In some paces, it sounds almost like sound effects from an old sci-fi movie. (This applies to both the Roku and iPad versions, using both headphones and speakers.) Terrible disappointment.

Audio quality is not good. I use an iPAD 3 and have very nice Bose headphones. I have high speed Internet and the video quality is very good, but the audio sounds compressed with a lot of digital noise. Too bad. I contacted them an they apologized and said that they stream in CD quality. It does not sound like it to me. Anyone else having this problem?

A sometime thing. As others have noted, a pleasure when it actually works, but video streaming fails a lot, even when audio continues. Desperately needs work.

Great operas; poor UI/UX. Love the operas which makes up for the extremely poor UI/UX. App support is less than helpful. This app is in need of serious upgrade, especially given the cost. App freezes. Won’t allow for pausing or rewind on most operas. Although I am enjoying the operas I would most definitely not recommend the app until there is investment in major upgrade.

Fantastic!. I've been waiting for this to work with AppleTV and Airplay and now it does. Subtitles look great too. Bravo!!

I just want to watch opera. The functionality of the app is terrible. God forbid I get logged out of it, I’ll have to wait until the planets align again before I’ll be able to log back in again.

Terrible execution on a relatively expensive subscription. I really wanted this app to work. I have a new iPad with excellent WiFi connection. I would get minutes into a title and the screen would go black with the video never to return. If I close it down to restart, I have to login again. I got tired of repeating the process endlessly. Support is nonexistent. I canceled the subscription.

Nice when it works. The app frequently crashes and I’m often unable to use my subscription (purchased through the App Store). Streaming quality is not consistent either. I really want to support the Met, but can’t put up with the frustration.

Very unreliable. The connection invariably freezes two-thirds the way through any given opera. I have no idea whether it's the app or a problem with the Met's server; there is definitely nothing wrong with my own Internet connection.

The app can drive you crazy. I subscribed but each time I tried to watch something it said I had to subscribe. I repeatedly completed the subscription requirements only to be told I had already subscribed. Try watch and tells me again - subscribe. This goes on and on. Seriously get your act together.

Pause broken on Apple TV app. I love this app but just yesterday (11/14) on my Apple TV (4K) the pause/play button on remote no longer works. On other apps like HBO, Disney+, etc it still works fine. I’ve tried everything I can think of, restart, delete & reinstall, unplug Apple TV device - nothing has helped. VERY, VERY, VERY frustrating and seriously diminishes my enjoyment of the app without the flexibility of being able to pause. I’m hoping for a fix soon.

Support. I've been using the desktop version and I love this service. I've tried it in the iPad a couple times and it seemed ok. Today I had to update the IPad software to enable TV viewing and the sound in the met app stopped working. Audio in every other app and the browser work fine. Fix this PLEASE!

Please update audio options!. Hi! Great app but please change the Apple TV app audio options so I can play the sound through my HomePod. Whenever I play anything it reroutes through my crappy tv speakers. Thank you!!

Not Ready for Prime Time. User interface far better than the horrible web site for PC. However,as noted by others, streaming fails frequently (though at least the sound continues to play); when plugging into a TV for a big display using the Lightning to HDMI adapter the iPad display is mirrored to a tiny portion of the screen area. Please don't fix, rather take Met on Demand back to the drawing board!

Gets the Job Done, Needs Performance Improvements. It does a good job at letting you watch the operas you’d like, but the amount of glitches that occur with the subtitles drive me insane. Also, I can’t favorite any of the operas I’ve watched. Sometimes they won’t even play. So if you have the patience and passion, it’s a decent app. If not, don’t download.

A whole lot of nothing. When you open an app you expect it to function. I have only been able to get 2 operas to play out of many I have tried to open. All I get are blank, black screens. Am cancelling subscription.

Buggy, seldom works. Such a wonderful catalog. It just causes one to be so very disappointed when it can’t be made to work correctly. Small wonder so many of us are becoming technophobic. A real pain in the neck. Needs LOTS of work.

Hmmm...I like-ish....needs work. Great for finding archives and the audio works... The video, however, goes black after a few minutes of playtime.... The subtitles remain... Needs to be able to play in the background while multitasking IMPORTANTLY, needs to resume where the video left off... The whole app reloads back to home page which is annoying It's a pretty app though...

Most Wonderful. I love opera. I paid for my subscription without thinking twice about it. The Met’s performances are outstanding. The singers are first rate. Set design and the the orchestra are wonderful.

No AirPlay in AppleTV Version. The operas themselves are wonderful, as you would expect from the Met. But this is a review of the app, and, at least for me, it’s fatally flawed. The AppleTV app does not support AirPlay (e.g. to HomePods). Using AirPlay from an iPhone to AppleTV and from there to HomePods sort of works ... until the app crashes. And that approach doesn’t show subtitles. I really want to like this app because of the music, but sadly I have to pass.

Would be 5 stars. If it worked in the background. But even for audio only it has to remain on the screen. So I can't read and listen simultaneously.

Works fine. AirPlay would be a great improvement.. No problems at all with streaming. Watching Gotterdammerung over home WiFi with no interruption. Would really like AirPlay support to watch the operas via Apple TV. Would also prefer larger subtitles for iPad version.

Doesn’t Play on Samsung Smart TV. By far the worst app I have ever had. Poorly built, NO tech support- expensive and frustrating! I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS APP FOR TV NOR WOULD I TAKE A YEARLY SUBSCRIPTION! Don’t tell me it’s the speed. Everything else works well on my tv. Your app does not. It’s a ripoff.

Don’t subscribe until website is back online. The Met Opera has had a huge web event and is down at the moment, wait until this is resolved until subscribing. I’m currently being billed for the app to crash when I try to use it.

Compatibility. Non compatible with chromecast, which is problematic because I would like to watch this in the big screen, but everything else is great!

I enjoyed it very much. After knowing the treatment to Anna Netrepko, I would like to cancel permanently. Art cannot be managed politically motivated. Carlos Martinez

Have you guys just given up?. Obviously the content can’t be beat, but you realize that people who subscribe to this are probably really into, you know, high quality audio? What can’t the Apple TV app airplay it’s audio to a higher quality source?

Annoying.. I bit the bullet to join the app and can’t open anything without being prompted to register. Which I’d already done. It is SO frustrating!! Now I remember that I’ve had this experience before and so I had to cancel. Now I’ve rejoined and still can’t open something to watch and hear. If anyone has advice, please share!

Disaster. The previous version worked very well. I’m not sure if developers have actually tried the new version. It’s a disaster. Doesn’t work well on landscape, difficult to find the videos, must press play at the start of each number. That is ridiculous. I don’t get it!

Support. It's fantastic until it doesn't work. When I go back to the app, sometimes the menu won't pop up!! FIX THIS please

Unable to log in. I have never been able to log in even after changing my password on the full site and trying again multiple times. So, I have no idea if the application deserves a high rating.

Can’t use student access on the app. I tried to access the library through my college but it isn’t even an option on this app. Guess I’ll use my computer

How do you subscribe?. I love the preview and want to subscribe but don't see anything that explains how. Can someone who did it direct me to the right place? Thanks.

Please add Airplay support. As an iPad3 user I am generally happy with this app, but after having bought an AppleTV to find it wasn't compatible with my tv, buying an iPad cord (RCA-TV), and then once getting the Apple TV finding out the subtitles, which work on Netflix, don't work. I am offended that I've paid money in support of this app whole heatedly and at the least the subtitles don't work in either form of getting it to my television screen. As a patron of the met and a loyal fan, PLEASE FIX THIS APP!

Would like rental option. The app won't do me any good: while we enjoy opera on demand,we are not such fans that a subscription makes sense. So we will continue to rent individual titles on our computer as our interest indicates (a few in a year).

Lovely format-buggy titles. I appreciate much about the simpleness of the application’s layout. Navigation is well mapped out and progressing through the media is not difficult. I find that I often must restart the application in order to see Titles after, for various reasons, I have had to exit the app temporarily.

Could not sign up for free trial. After opening the app, I clicked on the option for a 7 day free trial, and monthly after that. I filled out the form and clicked Continue. But it keeps telling me I have entered an invalid email address. But it’s valid!! Very, very disappointed!
