My Go-to News Source❗️. Advert-free and unbiased … what's not to love?

Best daily news for me. I depend on this app to stay current with events, especially in Germany. The reporting is clear, factual, and well-written. The coverage of events in the U.S. is outstanding. One current glitch. I updated my iPhone 11 yesterday to iOS 14, and the app won’t open. I’m sure it will be ok soon.

Biased News. Stories aren’t even true. Too much opinion, not enough facts.

No Picture in Picture or closed captioning. I watch a lot of DW app on my iPad. I want to give this app 4 stars but I can’t. There’s no support for Picture in Picture. When I exit out of this app, I cannot use this app while in conjunction with another app. There are other news streaming apps, and safari that allows for this function. So I cannot look things up at the same time while I’m listening/watching the news at the same time. In addition to this, the lack of close captioning is alarming for a network of this size. No close captioning available when selected, same happened when I used to use the Apple TV app. I’m hard of hearing but it’s difficult to keep up sometime. I’m very grateful for the ability to rewind live as many times as I need to, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to keep up on both iPad app or Apple TV app. Please DW fix these these options.

Great app !!. I really like to read Germany news, but i really wish that to have an DW app for German learning.

Okay but .... Articles generally okay for overview of German perspective on world events but no in-depth treatment. In sports, bizarre behavior with incorrect links—articles do not open to actual topic! Only plausible explanations are (1) programmed that way for a laugh (on reader) or (2) 11-year old Heiner (grandson of DW boss) hasn’t quite mastered HTML?

Suggestion.... Would be nice if they had a dark mode.

Bookmark for later reading. Neutral review. Why the IOS apps do not have facility to bookmark articles for later reading? Along with that why no search capability?

Boring. I’ve had the app for years but only occasionally use it. Each time I do, I’m so disappointed in the poorly written and extremely leftist bias. Goodbye DW

Font is half the size. They cut the font in half with no way to adjust. And no, changing global settings for 1 app is ridiculous. Deleted since cannot comfortably read. Also accessing stories is much more time consuming as they revamped the whole menu system. It was perfect, now useless.

If it ain't broken, don't fix it!. I love DW, but new app is simply horrible, a huge step back from the previous version. First of all, to watch streams in different languages you have to change the language of the app and wait for it to restart. As I watch DW in three languages, this is simply ridiculous. On the new "watch" screen you have news articles at the bottom, which are totally useless, as the stream stops when you open an article. Also, my question is, who wants to browse or read articles while watching a stream? The new DW app is so bad, I went back to using my old iPad with the previous version on it. Really, DW: if it ain't broken, don't fix it!

Chromecast?. Chromecast support would make this app much more useful. This is a basic feature now, as seen on other European News apps such as VRT in Belgium. Thank you DW for your excellent content, however. Please continue!

Like your news but you need to update your App. I like reading DW at anytime I have, it’s trusted source for me or at least more reliable than others. But you need to upgrade your phone apps in the meaning that make it more easier to navigate menu, more touch supports, and bring us dark mode (I can only read well in dark mode) Updated: you guys really to add “Dark mode” for better reading. I’m in dark mode all the time from computer and phone.

Live video doesn't play anymore!. The only missing feature is the ability to play live tv. I used to play it before but after some updates it doesn't work.

Font too small. Please add an option to increase font size. It’s so hard to read unless you’re using a magnifying glass. Haha. Danke!!

Great content, lousy app. Time required to navigate between sections excessively long. When trying to connect to a story from a notification, goes into gangs all the time. May switch to the website.

Video no longer fills screen. This latest version only plays live TV in a small box. Am I missing something?

Blank white screen when opening. Notning to see here, deleted and reinstalled to no avail.

Freezing, Freezing, Gone. The app freezes every time I use it. So, I delete it And re-download it from App Store. Love the content but freezes . The next time I want to use it, there is nothing but a blue screen. This reminds me of the old Windows 2000 Bluse screen of death only more frustrating. Please fix this issue for all your DW Fans. New update not good. Before the latest update, I looked forward to using the DW app every morning to get the world news. But now it is convoluted and difficult to use- so much so, I find myself closing the dw app and searching for the news online. DW was the best unbiased news app- the latest update changed that for my purposes. Sad day, but I am uninstalling DW from my devices.

New design is terrible. The app is slower, the search function is gone and it's not showing the latest stories. I hate this roll it back.

Not Compatible with iPad OS 15.1. The stories fill the first and second time after installing/reinstalling the app and then nothing fills the screen. Kindly update the app. Thanks. UPDATE- I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve deleted and reloaded this app. I would think DW would test the apps before release. News stories from October 27, aren’t helpful up top when current news is nowhere to be found.

New design is dreadful. In the new update the design is claustrophobic and derivative of the likes of CNN’s app. Whereas the previous design had easy access to the news in our world that’s actually important, one now has to sift through a half dozen culture or opinion articles. The prior design was altogether better organized with most articles not taking up a third or more of the screen on the main page. I am thoroughly frustrated that my main source of international news has tried to fix what isn’t broken in favor of some needlessly superfluous interface.

Text too small. I read the news stories in German. Unfortunately, the text size is uncomfortably small for my eyes. It seems to ignore my phone’s settings, and it doesn’t offer any font-size settings of its own. Not all eyes are created equal. Please fix. — Still no update. Given the service’s desire for global reach, their inattention to accessibility makes no sense. I only keep this on my phone in the hope that they make accessibility a priority.

One of the best. Not only a quality app but one of the most trusted sources of world news, very well done !!!

Where is the search bar?. I am a German teacher and frequently use this app. I the lastest update the search bar disappeared. Where is it? I want to search articles on certain topics. It needs to be easy to find. Can’t find it.

Where is the Chromecast support?. I had expected to cast the video content to my TV, but alas. Deleted the app instead.

Add the ability to select words, not just paragraphs. Otherwise, it’s difficult to look words up in the dictionary.

Latest updated D.O.A.. Really enjoyed your service until this last update... when I open the app on my iPhone 11 I get white screen with the DW logo. I swipe right to get to the menu for regional news and pick one only to get a never ending "wait" circle. What's up guys?

Needs option to adjust text size!. Content is good. The app’s major technical need is to allow the text size to be adjusted to make it larger. The default text size is too small on a smartphone. Hope this feature can be added soon. Thanks!

Bugs. There is a bug in the French mobile version. After scrolling down one time the app gets stuck. This only happens when I change the language to French.

Exhaustive and unbiased indeed. Been looking for a while for a solid and complete int’l news source with live tv and good African news coverage, well there it is. DW does the job with simplicity and efficiency.

Much better than US media. The ONLY thing I hope the devs will add is ChromeCast compatibility. An Apple box isn’t in my future, so hopefully one day it’ll work with my cheap little Google doodad.

Crashes regularly. The latest version of this app crashes regularly. Very annoying.

Dark mode please. Great app …great programs… just include dark mode feature in settings please.

Usability issues. The application doesn’t allow to select a single word, for a look-up in a dictionary, for example. Only a whole paragraph can be selected. I wrote the developers about this issue a few months ago, but they seem to ignore it. Another inconvenience is inability to use the swipe gesture to return to a previous screen. Thus, the DW website has better usability than this application.

App does not open any more. Have been using this app for years. But since early this month (Nov2020) it will not open any more. I deleted the app and re-downloaded it, but with the same behavior. Reading now other recent reviews tells me, that the app must certainly have a glitch which needs to be corrected.

Do not update.. After upgrading it deleted all my saved articles, and the new interface is awful.

years later (2022) , still same issues. readability on iOS is non-existent, there is still no darkmode ( people have asked for years ) AND adjusting fontsize is horrible throughout the app ( you ony thankfully get iOS' ability to increase article fontsize )

Back arrow. Even though the app is quite good, why would you put the back arrow down in the lower left corner in the redesign? It is so frustrating.

No “copy link” option from share menu. I have to open a story in a browser in order to get a link. Most news apps let you copy the link directly from the app.

Please optimize for the iPhone X screen. It would be nice if the next update would be optimized for the iPhone X screen.

Wishing for Chromecast support. Stream stops when you exit full screen mode. Stream quality was excellent. Other thing that would be nice if the app continued playing the audio in the background if you switch to another app

Less is not "more". The "news" content is jumbled up with op-eds and the whole lot is scattered about with little care given to news categories. Navigation is similar to a worm-hole. Now apparently made for Youtubers--video heavy and light on actual substantive news content. So if you expect an actual newspaper app look elsewhere. Oh yes, now also ZERO personalization options...

New version tv screen works but not intuitive. I had to read the reviews here to figure out what was going on with the app in my iPad, here is my review. A. Screen appears small in landscape mode, the image is zoomed, and there is no little square with arrow to seize up the image. I thought that DW had decided to get rid of it. B. The solution is to turn the iPad to portrait mode and then: touch the tv image to widen it, only then you can turn back to portrait mode and watch the news. Please put the square by the image so we can enhance it without turning. I can imagine many people had the same trouble. Content: 5 stars, 10 if compared to tv news in the US.

Not Working on iPhone 12Mini. I had to replace my phone and DW is the only app that won’t load. After removing from app from main screen, it will not allow me to download it again. DW still works on my iPad. 5 stars for iPad, 0 for iPhone 12 Mini.

buggy. Tapping a notification should go directly to the article, not the front page or anywhere else. It’s not that hard.

Remains buggy. While I enjoy the news content when the app is working, I often open it only to find a blank screen and the refresh icon not responding. App only functions again after I leave it for a day or so, or turn my iPhone off and back on again. Despite numerous app updates since I installed it in 2022, this ‘blank’/no content bug still happens fairly regularly (at least once a week).

New version is TERRIBLE!!. Clicking on notifications and trying to open a news story opens the app and the screen is blank! Have to kill and re-launch multiple times Harder to navigate in the new app. Really not good anymore!

The interface is irrelevant and frankly garbage. Honest feedback to the devs. I love DW articles and content so this one’s a tough one…ever since the update the same articles and headlines are pinned to the home page. Instead of the latest news and articles it’s always the same headlines the authors or whoever is trying to get more eyes on shoved in our faces. I’m literally seeing the same articles for the past 10 days. This needs a serious review because to be quite honest it’s annoying, irrelevant and makes me not want to open the app. You’ll find more up to date news in last weeks printed news paper. Sheesh.

App not working. What's up with DW app.used to be good and reliable Now it freezes and gives me old news that I have to delete it and install it again. But that only works for a little while. Very annoying Please help

Needs work to iron out bugs. Since latest upgrade app locks up constantly. Only way to get going again is to reboot your phone. The old saying why fix it if it not’s broken surely applies here. It was working well without any issues before. Well, it’s broken now. iPhone 11 user.

It works well. I have been using this app for about 5 hours. Seems to work fine. I'm a bit confused about the differences between this app "DW" and the crashy, poorly working "DW News Portal". Forget Portal and just use this app instead. And Air Play works fine with DW too.

UI consistency. Like the app for the news content. Would like developers to adopt standard iOS conventions such as swipe-to-go-back instead of having to use the arrow in the top left corner. Awkward to use.

App freezes. At times the app freezes and it is not possible to move down the screen or to do anything else within the app. It has to be closed and restarted again then. Please fix this.

UI could be better. DW content is consistently good (except for using US English spelling convention), but very tedious that stepping forwards and back on stories always reverts to the top of the list forcing users to scroll scroll scroll to find and explore the next story.

Not a news agency. We want to see news from countries all over the world, and most of them only report on China, and they all negatively. This is obviously not objective, they don't like a news agency.

Not very good. Live stream doesn't have any sound Why it doesn't cover the whole website such as Learning Deutsch?

overlapping sound channels using mobile. Worked wonderfully on my ipad through a resort's free wifi but on my iphone 7+ today, when using that mobile's data, had two problems: a. using live TV, same item played twice & then did so again on another news item; b. could hear sound in English & a channel in French at the same time.

Very annoying. Why is it playing everything in Arabic? This has happened quite suddenly without any clue? I've been using this app for years and now, I don't even switch it on. It's sad! How could they cut out all their English speaking viewers.

Recent format change ruined the app. It was a good app until they decided to change it just for the sake of change. It is no longer convenient to review all the world news as you need to jump in and out of the menu groupings. This app was number 1 in my opinion previously and would have rated 5 stars. But the change in format has dropped it to a 1 star program now.

It’s all about the virus now. I used to love the DW app but now all they ever talk about is the virus and how many deaths there are. I get it it’s an important matter (for some) but that’s all this app will push.

Flaky TV bugs. When watching DW TV, if viewing in fullscreen and the device is tilted from portrait to landscape or vice versa, the feed begins playing in the background of the fullscreen view with a lag, making viewing impossible. This functionality is completely broken and is improperly using iOS video player APIs. Additionally, DW TV still cannot be watched in Deutsch, as other reviewers pointed out. I was hoping to use this app to improve my German by watching German language news but it is not possible with these bugs. Please prioritize these critical bug fixes before trying to add any new features.

Widget Please. Hello, just some feedback. I really miss the old app along with offline mode for travel. Also, a Widget would be Great and would encourage a little more interaction. Kevin

Downfall - Untergang. I believe DW News Portal V1.6 was the most complete version. Why create an app that offers less the the previous app? This app doesn't offer any radio streams!! Please put the radios streams back! Meanwhile I will keep rating you with one star.

Not working after latest update. I recently updated the application. Since then, it does not seem to connect. The DW home screen comes up, but after a few seconds, that disappears and DW shuts down. That is too bad as there is good news coverage in many languages, but I can no longer access it.

Doesn’t work.. Screen freezes and the app doesn’t work at all. What a shame because Deutsche Welle News is one of my fav places to go and get news.

Unhappy. I used to be able to watch and listen in the german language, but it won’t open anymore in german, only in english. My question is why?

Font size too small. I love the layout of the app, but unfortunately I have to agree with everyone else who says the font size is too small. At least with the full website on my iPad I can pinch-open the story wider to increase the size of the print. Not possible on the app. Looking forward to this fix and then I'll try again.

App suddenly crashing. Today, with no App or iOS updates, the DW app crashes as soon as I open it. It flashes up and then shuts down.

Please consider implementing dark mode. Love the reporting and content from DW, however the app experience can be improved by implementing dark mode.

Security guards at mosques and synagogues. Why aren’t there security guards at mosques and synagogues who are armed with at least either a taser, pepper spray, nightstick, or even a gun for the occupants protection, why don’t you guys write about this to which is really shoddy by the way.

Not what I hoped for. I was hoping this app would have all the TV shows that I can watch on the DW website. Turns out, it's just news, news and more news.

Bias and Propaganda. I gave DW News a chance but the conflict between Israel and Palestine among other events made it abundantly clear how biased DW is and how much propaganda they push in their news

Great, needs larger font. This is a great app and I like the content. My only issue is the size of the font when reading. If I could adjust the font, that would be better.

Apple TV 4K app hurts the eye: very low resolution. It is very stable, content is rich, a super network for information. Only downside is the Apple TV 4K app: it’s resolution is so low that I can only watch DW on my iPad or iPhone. Give it a 4K or event an HD 1080p or 720p resolution, and I will give it a million stars! I understand the work behind this transition, so I can wait...

Why is the Live Tv in German not working. I can watch German DW news on the tv and I taught I could also watch them live here as well. But it works only in English. What a disappointment! Still not working after I contacted the developer.

Complaint!. Why so big differences between the iPhone version and iPad, in the iPad version I can not find Dari language while we are able to find it in iPhone version. I hope you will consider it at next update of this application , otherwise I will remove this application from my iPad. Thank you.

Needs a list of available programs. I have to scroll through hundreds of clips just to find the one program I'd like to watch. I usually use a web browser instead.

Deutsche Welle. Excellent source of news, in German and English. The site is a cornucopia of articles, podcasts, videos and materials for learning German. The offerings are huge, they are free and of very high quality. I use the site every day and strongly recommend it for students of German or anyone interested in Germany.

A very good app. Clean easy to navigate. Looks really good. The life news stream is tremendous.

Crashed. It crashed a few weeks ago, and will not open. I can't delete it and reinstall. It's frozen up. What's the deal?

Crashes every time I use it.. Crashes so often! Sometimes hard to get through a single story without restarting app 2 or 3 times. Really frustrating. Love the content but app is SO buggy.

Step backwards. There are some positive features to this new version, but overall it's a step backwards. The number of available sections and articles is ridiculously small, you cannot do searches, livefeed and videos cannot be played via AirPlay on the AppleTV anymore. Had I known it would be so bad, I would have never updated!

It works well and offers a lot. At first, the app didn't work, but that seems to have been an anomaly. Otherwise, it works well and has many language options, including English and German. The articles provide a good overview of relevant international news stories from a European perspective.

Better Than Nothing. But that's about it. Needs: Video modern interface ability to tap on a German word and get the English translation, or other languages

Ted. This latest "bug fix" released July 3 has made it impossible to open this App. Please fix this problem.

DW asked me to rate it, so I did.... It stops playing in the middle of live streaming. No way to search programs like the web site so you have to look through every tile to find a program specific program you want to see. A lot of times it just cannot get a connection when the web site works just fine. The only thing that is better than the web site is that the player keeps the screen on when buffering takes too long while the with the web site the screen will go off if bufferring takes too long. Update: yes, there is a search option but it is horrible. Results appear in some random order and there is no way to change it.

Great Reportage, World Coverage; But Would Like to See a Feature Replaced!. Dear DW Team, I have been an off-and-on user of your mobile app for the past six years; I use the app in German to improve my reading. And I absolutely love the app (especially "Die Top-Themen in Drei Minuten" videos!), because you guys provide quality world news coverage (with a different perspective than American, or British, correspondents). I also love that you guys cater to language learners (langsam gesprochenes Deutsch z. B.). However, in an update a year or two ago you guys took away one of the features of the app which made it much easier to learn your wonderful language (which let me tell you—it was a pain in the beginning, but now I love what I can do in German, which I can't in English); that feature, which is fairly universal among all text, across all apps on the iPhone, is the ability to highlight words by holding your thumb/finger over them with the option to "Loop up" ("nachschlagen") a word you don't know. I've finally reached a point in my German language learning where I feel comfortable using the Duden dictionary installed on the iPhone; however, I'd rather read F.A.Z. over DW now solely because of the ease this features permits. Please bring back the highlight and nachschlagen! Please?

.... Seriously? I can deal with it dubbed in English ( but I do suggest that you fix that ) but what I can't stand is that it keeps telling me it that this part of the show is not allowed on the Internet! Are you really going to try to make us to either spend money we don't have so we can watch everything on tv or we have to endure it telling us that we can't watch half the shows on the Internet!

No German!. Same problem others mentioned: no German, even when you choose German as your default language. Zero points!

Crashes upon opening a story. Censorship ?? Every story opens fine except the one about German police worried about anti-immigrant violence. The app crashes when that particular story is clicked. Weird.

No good. Where is the streaming radio content? All is see are videos, and even those cannot be viewed with the German language. I selected "Deutsch" in the language settings, but this apparently only changed the text of written articles. I miss the German streaming radio!

It's works for me. Not so bad as others make it out to be. Good practice for building language skills. I really wish there was a mode to quickly switch between the German and English version of the articles so I can build my vocab

No font size?. Am I right that there's no way to increase the font size (its tiny!)? That would seem to be a basic function of any reading app nowadays. If the capability is there, I certainly couldn't find it.

Fixed it. Unfortunately the application is not wowking correctly and don't update new news. Please fix bugs related it.

Limited content and poor search. I downloaded this to listen to Langsam Gesprochene Nachrichten, a daily news podcast but it doesn't seem to be available through this app. The search function is also very limited as there are no search options meaning I can't sort by date added, media type, length, skill level etc. Also I cannot press and hold words to define them as I can in Safari, so I have to leave the app to get definitions. Overall this app is not helpful for those learning German and is in general inferior to the mobile site, the only benefit of this app is offline mode.

Big Disappointment. I normally read DW in German to maintain my language skills. Unfortunately the new app has removed the dictionary lookup feature, which allowed the user to select a word in the text of an article and look it up on an associated German-English dictionary. I really want this feature back.

Keeps crashing!. The app keeps crashing still while select a top from the left side (blue) menu in Persian language. I though today's release will fix this issue but it has not yet resolved. Please revise and fix the cause of crashing on next update.

Excellent Articles. It is easy to navigate to intelligently written articles on subjects that I find to be insightful and thought provoking. As an American, I appreciate Deutsche Welle second only to the New York Times.

It complements other apps I have.. I read the articles here in two languages. It can't be my only source for news and analyses but it complements other news apps I have. Suggestion for developers: Please add the "back" button to the end of the articles. This way, we don't have to scroll all the way up to find it, after reading the articles.

Mostly garbage of socialist propaganda. The news are curated to appease official government agendas and suppress dissent

Great App. I'm really enjoying this app. The content is easy to navigate and well-presented. I'm so happy to now have DW and NPR as my go-to online and mobile sources for serious and relevant journalism.

Cord Cutter's Dream!. Commercial free, English and other separate language feeds. Totally addictive content. The design and functionality of the app is the utmost high quality. Just watch it and see for yourself.

Where's the Live!. Great content but you have to be a genius to find the "live TV" button. Also I can't get videos to automatically shift to landscape mode when I flip phone horizontally.

Where's integration?. Very poor sharing capability and just overall weak user interface. Like a watered down version of the website. A shame from such a good and balanced news outlet.

Does not support background audio playback. I wish it could stream audio in multitasking mode. When I use another app, the streaming cuts.

Terrible interface, no video. The screen splits in two and scrolls independently, like having two iPhones side by side. Streaming presents a black screen with only music for about 10 seconds. Useless app.

What does the D in DW stand for?. 1.How is it possible that all the video offered is only in English? Even that which was originally filmed in German is dubbed into English!!! 2. Why is there no audio-only content? Theirs video, but (duh....) it's not suited for people occupied with driving, work, etc. I KNOW Deutsche-Welle produces a lot of audio content (it's on the website!), so why isn't it available here? 3. Make GERMAN audio and video content available, please! Isn't DW financed via the German taxpayer? Shouldn't they be helping spread German language and culture? Agh. Very disappointing.

Very biased and unprofessional. Because of this sort of reporting this news org facilitates the slaughter of hundreds of Palestinian children every day.

Crashing!. I love DW. Use it to stay up on European news and perspective. But it's crashing every time I sign on. Must be the new update I just loaded.

German tv does not work. Love DW as a news source, but disappointed the German DW tvdoesn’t work for me in the US.

App is great! Rebuttal to whiners. Some reviewers have whined that the app doesn't have language versioning--but it does. They haven't taken the trouble to explore the app before complaining. Look for the blue setting button in the upper right... 1) choose your language preference, 2) choose your channel origin, 3) refresh the content. Deutsche Welle is the greatest!
