Great service, app needs updates. Needs to be updated for newer iPhones/landscape mode etc... only reason for 3 star reviews. Love the service, used to receive the paper copies and was excited when I could get it on my iPad mini. App is a little wonky on my iPhone XS Max.

I love history. This magazine is a wonder source of information about England and its history.

Love this magazine. Don't get me wrong; it's not "deep" - you won't feel like you practically earned a PhD by reading it. But it is fun and interesting and wonderful for relaxing reading. I've been reading British history as a hobby for about a quarter century now, too, yet, in this one, I'm constantly reading interesting tidbits about people and events I never knew before. Here's hoping other magazines adopt this one's idea of clicking on articles you like to get additional information. Love that!

Iffy app. Don’t know what has happened to this app, but now on my iPad and iPad mini, I can download a mag to my tablet, but when I go to look at it later I just have blank pages or the app crashes. When I do get to read an issue they have changed the layout to a scroll version of the article rather than a straight copy of the mag page - which I preferred. I’ve canceled my sub

Beautifully written and so much fun!. I share this with my retired historian Mom.. the articles are well researched and very well written. Best of the history magazines out there.

My favorite magazine. Every month I await the nest issue of this magazine. I'm SO glad it's now available in digital, I used to go down to the newsstand to obtain it. Then I even rebought the ones I had in hard copy, so I would have them all on my tablet! A really nice magazine, with tons of interesting articles. The illustrations are great too. My favorite magazine, I wish I lived in the U.K. So I could go to those cool looking day trips/happenings they talk about. Well, maybe one day I can visit:)!

Great....but. This magazine is great but many times the articles that are supposed to have audio, they don’t work. Would love more audible since I have vision issues.

Love this App. Great reading app. Just a few tweaks to get a 5 star needed. Should be able to read in Landscape Mode and read as just text. App opens quickly. Easy to find the issues you own or to see list of regular or special editions. Images are HD quality on my iPad Pro even when blown up to maximum size. And magazines are wonderfully written and displayed.

Magazine brilliant...app not so much n. I think this magazine is so extremely well done. The content well written and researched and laid out as to draw the reader in. However, the app is very buggy. I’m running the app on a brand new iPad Pro 12.9” on the current OS and the app constantly crashes while trying to have an article read via the app. Certain issues will just not download, even if doing an inner app purchase restore or iPad restart. So I’m playing roulette if I purchase an issue wondering if I’ll be able to download and read. I tried to contact The developer direct via the link on the App Store to alert them to these issues but I constantly receive an error message and can’t proceed. Great magazine frustrating app.

History in the Time of COVID. During this time of isolation and distancing, I find reading articles about history a very rewarding activity. I highly recommend this journal.

This app is an amazing way to learn history... Even for an American.. I don't live in the UK but I have always been fascinated by European history. I got this app so I can learn in an interesting way and get off social media for a little bit. I would definitely recommend this app to a friend that likes history.

Excellent Magazine. Easy to read, informative, well written and researched.

Not accessible. I love the content of this magazine and found it from the podcast, which I listen to regularly when I run. I look forward to running now and the magazine is a great supplement. The photos and images are worth it. However, I wish it had more accessibility features. At the very least, it should allow for larger font sizes for the many people with less than 20/20 vision, myself included. To be really accessible, it should work with screen readers for the blind. I tried running it on my iPad with VoiceOver turned on and it doesn't speak at all.

Love This Magazine. Like several other reviewers, I find that I really look forward to each month's issue. The recent promotion that offered past issues for a reduced rate was terrific and I took the opportunity to fill-in all the back issues that I was missing. As an American student of history and one who has traveled and worked professionally in England, I am always intrigued by British interpretations of not only their history--but ours as well. The special issue focusing on our Civil War is a prime example. I have not experienced any of the technical problems that frustrated some earlier reviewers. Apparently the latest update corrected most -if not all - of them.

A keeper, but could be better. I got the trial subscription and will keep it, at least for a year. The content is interesting and well laid out, but I expected better. On the technical side, I really wish you included landscape mode as it’s really awkward holding an iPad in portrait mode. While I found the articles in the one issue I’ve read interesting, they’re pretty shallow. I read all of them in a little over an hour. I wish you included at least one article that was more like a meal than an appetizer.

Great Read. Terrible App. Not sure what the heck it’s doing but it’s slow, slow, slow. Sometimes features/articles come up; sometimes not.

I LOVE THIS MAGAZINE BUT.... I always try to give an app 5 stars. But I have purchased my 2 year of this magazine and I CANNOT open any of the magazines from the past months. It will only let me open the month that we are in. It is very frustrating.. I need HELP!! K. W. Dania Beach, Florida USA

Solid UX and excellent content. This is some of the finest history magazine content for casual reading. The app is really ambitious and does an excellent job most of the time. Two observations to warn you: each issue is enormous and takes a good wifi signal to download (not good whilst on airplanes), and the app does occasionally, and apparently randomly, forget what was downloaded forcing a reconnection to "restore purchases" and re-download the issues. Other than that frustration, this is an excellent reading experience carrying the logic of the traditional layout to the logic of fingers on a screen.

Older issues aren’t accessible even after paying. I paid to unlock call the past episodes, and the in-app payment went through, but I still can’t access the back issues. The individual issues still show they can be purchased for $6.99, despite paying to unlock them all.

Will not open. The app crashes every time I try to open since the last update. What is going on?

Enjoy. The articles are great being about little known facts about well known people and stories about not so well known people. The app itself can be a problem as it does not always download easily

Don’t buy this it’s a trap. I accepted their offer of a trial and then failed to cancel in time and was charged $67. I attempted to use the app and registered to use the library but can never get in. It’s a constant barrage intended to get you to purchase more subscriptions. I have not been able to access and read anything. I’m going to complain to Apple about this app.

I just cannot log in!. The page is blank when I click the Log In button. What’s happened?

Always great reading!. Even if you aren’t interested in History, this digital and print magazine is endlessly fascinating. Well written by experts (with impressive qualifications) but still so accessible. Era hopping from mythology to present day and everything in between, this publication has turned out to be a great favorite. So glad I subscribed. Don’t miss the (occasionally quirky) readers’ letters. Think I will gift this to my 11 year old grandson, knowing the whole family will enjoy it.

Fine content for its subject area. I have been a subscriber from issue number 1 and I moved over to the digital version as soon as it was offered. The content is great and for a long time the digital implementation was not at the level it should have been. That is no longer the case though some may find some of the digital tricks they employ are a bit over the top. That said they do not get in the way of the content

Beautiful Magazine. Update, Sept. 2019. The app crashes when I try to load new issues. Haven't got useful help yet from the support team. Hope this isn't the end of a beautiful thing. 😕 If you already love history, this magazine is a fun way to take a break from your 500 page tome and read short, beautifully illustrated articles on a variety of topics. If you're just getting into history, it's a good way to sample a variety of topics. That said, the mag is almost completely Anglo-centric and caters to already well-developed English audiences enamored of the Tudors, the middle-ages, World War II, Vikings and Celts, and these basic areas get covered over and over again, albeit from many angles. Nonetheless, I really enjoy it. Another mag, World Histories, may be more palatable to those wanting a less England- focused dose of history.

Returning to Print. Great magazine, unfortunately this app is disappointing. Articles won’t load, then they show up on Apple News feed? Some of the best features of the magazine were the crossword puzzles and quizzes; unavailable on app. Very slow response to inquiries.

No iphone x support. I would have thought i could use my whole screen to read this, until then i wont subscribe.

Great app — when it works.. Unfortunately there are lots of glitches in the app. Periodically, it simply shuts down when I try to read one of my issues. I’ve had to delete the app and reinstall numerous times which means I have to download issues again and again. I’d give it five stars if it wasn’t for that.

Great reading experience. The print quality and the contents are excellent which is why I bought the app subscription and it did not let me down. The articles have accompanying podcast which is great and I wish they could install this podcast for all articles not just a few in each issue. Also the special issues are great but not as interactive as the regular issues. When you want to download multiple issues simultaneously the queued issues may not sometimes download automatically but this won’t bother you. Overall excellent magazine with good app.

Crap app.. Bought the analog and digital subscription. Cannot log in to my account on my phone or iPad. Get error message saying “login unsuccessful.” Wrote twice to customer “service” requesting assistance. No reply. Sure hope the paper copy arrives and that there is actual printing on the page.

Great magazine, horrible app, bad customer service. As with many others, the app won’t recognize my digital subscription. I’ve spent several hours on the phone, exchanged many emails, but no one has any idea how to fix this problem. Too bad, I’ve really enjoyed the content when I’ve seen the paper magazine but they obviously don’t care about their digital subscribers. UPdate: If I could give 0 stars I would. Continued bad service. Buy the magazine in paper or don’t buy it at all.

Great History Magazine. I love history; this is an amazing magazine to read. I read about the past in pieces, later I connect the dots. 👨‍⚕️

Impossible to unsubscribe. I noticed that each month I was being charged twice so I decided to unsubscribe. There is no easy way to unsubscribe. I used the proper method of unsubscribing on the Buysubscriptions website but there was no action and I received no response. The following month I was charged twice again. I will continue to try to unsubscribe.

Mag excellent, the App needs improvement. I have nothing but praise for the magazine, but the app needs work. Specifically, I give low ratings to all apps which can only be used in the portrait mode. I want to be able to use my built in stand and read in landscape mode.

Doesn’t recognize my subscription. I love the magazine and the app works fine for the most part. However, I have automatic renewal and it will not download the issues for 2020. It wants me to buy them, but when I click that, I get the message that I’m not up for renewal until Sept 2020. I’ve clicked “restore purchases” on both my iPhone and iPad and it’s still not recognizing my subscription purchased through the app. It downloaded the new Collector's Edition of Elizabethan Era, but not the regular editions of the history magazine. Please give me the magazines I’m paying for. I gave you a lot of money for all the back issues too. Actually, my iPad issues ended with July 2019, so you owe me more back issues for that

Slow. I like the magazine. I don't like slow load of the magazines. There is no problem once the magazine is loaded. Scrolling through the magazines is so slow and sometimes does not work at all. There is no way to contact support

App crashes. Frustrated with constant crashing of app when attempting to open a bookmarked page. Love the magazine, hate the app- so buggy. Yes, due diligence done- updates installed, newest iOS, blah blah blah tired of the developers checklist as to why it must be my fault and not your buggy app.

Best history magazine(s) and podcast. I got hooked on this magazine after finding the podcasts years ago. I subscribed to the hard copy of the magazine and greatly enjoyed the contents but ran into delivery issues here in the US. I love that this app has allowed me to buy all back issues of the magazine and have them at my fingertips. The app allows access to special editions and the excellent new World Histories magazine. If you or someone you know loves the study of history, the editors of this magazine gather the best historians who provide insightful and entertaining articles about a wide variety of subjects.

Impossible to download magazine,. Since November of 2019, it is impossible to download the magazines I have paid for! I have deleted and reloaded the app so many times that I have lost count, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS APP?

App crashes. I like the content, when I can see it. It very frequently freezes up or doesn’t load on my IPad or iPhone. Really poor app in terms of functioning - I’m on the verge of deleting it.

Great read, but (iPad-wise) no screen rotation?. Come on guys… With such an excellent, quick history read, through your well written format, I expect a bit more. The magazine itself is lovely, well written, and maintains up-to-date facts. But where is the screen rotation!?! Sometimes my hands tire, and I would like to flip my iPad to landscape mode. Could you work on that; for the arthritic, easily tired bunch of your reading public? If you manage this, I will upgrade this to five stars!

Crash Constantly. When I try to open one of my magazines the app crashes. I tried to contact support but that leads to a dead connection. I would thought the BBC would do better?

This app needs an urgent upgrade. I would give this five stars for content but the app itself is not designed for all Apple devices. On bigger iPhones the lack of resolution leaves half the screen blank and makes the pinch and zoom function useless. Overall it makes the fine content unreadable on my iPhone X. This app is in urgent need of an upgrade.

Terrific Resource. Informative, insightful and thought-provoking. A great help in clarifying and extending my historical knowledge and understanding which benefits my teaching History to secondary school students.

Disappointing. This app has some problems that make it too frustrating to bother subscribing: - It doesn’t support landscape - Because of this if I accidentally tip my iPad sideways when I put it back it has lost the scroll position in the article - If you leave and re-open an issues it forgets where you were - It doesn’t support the full size of my iPad - The app title is too long and so its gets cut off on the home screen as “BBCHistoryMa...” - There are in-issue links (good!) but if you click them there’s no back button so you have to search for which page you were on All of which shows that this app doesn’t get the time & development attention it deserves; there is some good content here but it’s let down by the app.

Fantastic reading. I always look forward to a new issue each month. Great reading old and new. Always interesting and very up to date with interactive features.

A nice way to learn history. Well-written and researched. Nice "digest" style with comprehensive references for further reading should the content prove to be extra interesting. I look forward to the next edition

History Revised Magazine. The much vaunted brand BBC History represents little more than the triumph of a grim political correctness and the death of history. If you prefer your history ‘reworked’ with modern cultural Marxist revisionist filtering, then look no further than this publication. When we forget from whence we came, we forget who we are.

Informative and entertaining. The History Magazine is informative but not dry. The writing, illustrations and interactives are a pleasure to delve into.

Trying. Annoying that it won't let me read it on my iPad yet.

I wish they would stop changing it.... I love the magazine and bought it in its physical form for years. Now I do it this way. Thing is, I had lots of them downloaded and now I have to download them all again if I want to read them (since they changed the app). And some of the ones I had, I can no longer find. My download speed is not that fast, so it's a pain in the *%^# to do. I was thinking of subscribing to another couple but not convinced I should now...

December issue won't load with this app. Apparently this app version 2.1.10 does not support the December issue of the magazine which requires 2.2.10 of the viewer software but the App Store for Australia doesn't offer that update, not sure about rest of world. Come on get it sorted, an industry app that doesn't open the dedicated publication.... What's that about?

Half and half. Bugs need fixing. Love & hate the fact it's not on paper. I can't read the whole set of mags I bought on my iPhone bc doesn't work. Sometimes I turn the page when reading and it closes the magazine so I have to find the magazine and the page again. Love the magazine though!

App. continually fails to open.. The App. won't open on iOS 9.3.2. I've tried deleting and re-installing, without success.

Great magazine, awful app!. This app is one of the worst I've come across - it just keeps crashing. I'm also using the first iPad so perhaps there's a problem there, but that's no excuse - I've paid for my subscription, and other app developers can make it work. This needs to get sorted now!

Love it!. Best history mag I've read! It has such a broad range of topics, there is something for everyone. The articles are written brilliantly and I'm finding that areas of history that I've never been really interested in are now being read eagerly! Used to be good. This used to be a good app, could scroll through like a normal magazine. Now it’s not good and usually doesn’t work offline. And I mainly read it when traveling so it’s not so good anymore.

Pathetic. When trying to complete collection, as per offer, simply churns away without any sign of a connection to allow download and pay. Poor effort.

BBC History Magazine. I cannot access my current issues or all of the previously purchased issues. My current app does not work and the new apps are useless to me because I already have a paid up subscription. Who can I turn to please?

Great app. This app is an improvement on the printed magazine and the printed magazine is very good. For those overseas the app saves you a lot of postage.

Content good — poor app. The app has a number of very annoying behaviours, which together make it tedious to use. 1)For a start, half of the “Issues” page, which displays the editions of the magazine available to download and/or read, is taken up with very annoying scrolling banner adverts. The ads aren’t even targeted—they keep urging me to take out a subscription, even though I’ve already done so. 2) It insists in operating in Portrait mode, even when I’m using my iPad in landscape. 3) Not all of the content that is available in the print issue or via Zinio is available via this app. In particular, the crossword is missing. I enjoy the crossword. It doesn’t have to be on-screen interactive: with Zinio, or any other app that allows me to take a screenshot of a page, then print it out, I can do the crossword with pen and paper. But this app denies me that option. 4) I value my privacy. Even though, within the app, I turned off Tracking, I later discovered more tracking switches hiding in the app settings under the iPad’s main settings—and these were still turned on.

IOS8. For goodness sake, can someone take responsibility and fix the crash error post-IOS8! How many times do I have to reload everything to no avail?

Great app. Fantastic site and content. My only gripe is the clunky App - for e.g., not being able to view content in landscape format. On the iPad one gets an irritating message to rotate your iPad to portrait orientation. Just a small thing - but you asked.

Constantly crashes. I was pretty excited about this app, but it constantly crashes. I haven't even been able to keep it open long enough to read an issue.

Great content . . . when you can get it. The feature articles do not download, only the short pieces and the ads. Of course pages with advertising download quickly and completely. This is like buying a newspaper after someone has clipped-out all of the news articles.

BBC Magazine. Great history. In which BBC magazine has.

Absolutely rubbish.. This app won’t let me download previous issues and crashes when I try to open current issues. If the BBC can’t do better than this, they should shut this app down and stop stealing subscribers’ money. Unfortunately this review bot insists that I give at least one star, even though it doesn’t deserve any.

Content inaccessible. Download stalls partway through. No access to articles. Reinstalling doesn’t help. Internet access is high speed and no problems with other apps

Excellent. Beautiful photography and illustrations. Readable history. Enlightening.

Outstanding. This is a remarkable compendium of historical issues with a British focal point. It's informative, accurate and yet entertaining - never boring! We look forward each month to the e-copy for stimulation and also to savouring the hard copy a few days later. Thanks for all your contributions and hard work - it really works for my wife and me. No family sharing as is an listed feature.. A lot of money for single device. I have contacted support and got a canned response and a solution that does not work.

Excellent content and the app works well so far. Reading a magazine page format on a phone screen is awkward though...would be nice if it was laid out for easier reading on small screens.

Miss the crossword. Love it, just wish it still had the crossword from the print edition.

Promotion promises not kept. Purchased a year subscription with promotion of 13 free back issues. Have received current issue, but no back issues, even after selecting restore purchases. Contacted them via their form, and was advised to make sure I have most up to date app. , I didn't, updated, and also uninstalled, reinstalled when nothing happened. I went back to the person, and I am now being told it will be fixed in a future app, and to keep trying to restore purchases when updates are released in the future?? And sorry for the inconvenience! I did find the one issue of the magazine interesting, but I am totally unimpressed with the way they dealt with this.

The Victorians. In its own way, it was the end of history and like a great fireworks display,the finale was a massive crescendo. The Victorians fascinate us. Plying out the end game of Empire, their behaviour under a microscope is a voyeurs dream

UK centered. A very well written popular history magazine from a not surprisingly English perspective, but which on occasion commendably presents revisionist or other people's viewpoints. Technically, it takes a long time to open and sometimes I have to exit the app and restart it. Nice graphical design of pages and great choice of photos.

Shakespeare issue. What I love about BBC History is a variety of perspectives and historical detail, presented in a lively way. I just love the Shakespeare 400th anniversary issue.

Good content but bad app. The content of the history magazine is very good and interesting to read, I have subscribed to the paper version for many years. I decided to switch to the electronic version on my iPad and I must say I am very disappointed in the quality of the app itself. It does not conform to many of the iPad standards that we have grown used to (e.g. you cannot escape the text and pictures by using your two fingers as in most other apps) and although they have tried to add in some other features it is not what I would have expected of a BBC based publication. There is no functionality that enables one to copy\print off interesting articles that one may want to refer to or share a few paragraphs of an article. Great magazine AND app!. It started out as a pdf copy of the print magazine (which has always been stellar) but they have developed it so that this app presents the content in a manner worthy of an iPad. It keeps getting better. Get!

Great. Even for those who didn't pay attention in high school a love of history can be satisfied. Along side History Revealed magazine you can enter a world that comes along side your love of historical fiction.

Keeps on crashing!. Really loved the magazine when i read it at friend's house but couldnt put up with the magazine clutters afterwards so decide to use this app instead. It downloaded perfectly and tried to download the free sample. Upon viewing it crashed after few secs, didnt even get chance to read the article. Uninstalled and tried again, still same problem. Im using ipad 1 so does that mean it is not compatible? Please developers fix this.

I Never Fail to Find an Article of Interest in Each and Every Issue. Every Anglophile, with any interest in history, will want this magazine. The app is pretty good, with just a little bit of inconvenience, but with a lot of "pinching to zoom in" I can even read the magazine on my iPhone 6 Plus.

Just a pdf. It's a rip off. Just a pdf of the print magazine. Hard to read and absolutely no interactivity. Don' waste you money

A good magazine to increase ones basic knowledge of U.K. history. I find this magazine to be an affordable and factually based way of gaining an increased knowledge of British History. It's written at an "Everyman" level that should be understood by most readers.

Just as good as the print version. I love this magazine. I started buying the print version after I got hooked on the podcast and wanted to read the accompanying articles. I was so glad when I started the digital subscription - more convenient and always on time.

Good but room for improvements. Really enjoy the articles and the wide variety printed. Cost per issue is a little high as well as the subscription. Do wish they would save the article you are reading when you close the app.

Excellent Magazine and App better than most. Absolutely love the content especially the book reviews. The app seems to have much fewer problems than many in iTunes. Good job testing your updates before you unleash them to the paying public.

At last!. I discovered this magazine when I was living in Swindon for a year. When I returned to the US, finding it was challenging. I was delighted to find the digital version and it does not disappoint. The articles are as well-researched and thorough as I remember, and the interactive bits where one can find more information are excellent. It's absolutely brilliant!

Fantastic!. Cannot say enough good things about this magazine. It is well written, historically accurate, and has great graphics and pictures. The interactive feature is a plus. Well worth the subscription price.

Great app AND content. First of all, the app works without a hitch on my iPad. Navigation is clear and simple, it's gas, and the organization is logical. The content is superb. Each piece is a fairly quick read, but many times one of these pieces sent me on the hunt for books on the subject. Highly recommended.

Pointless. This is a terrible implementation. Small black squares are constantly rewriting the screen. It seems to be a PDF file, so you have to scroll around and zoom in and out. Terrible. The content is interesting, but listen to their free podcasts (although they, too, are poorly produced). It's shocking that such a great institution should produce such a schlocky version. Tell the programers to look at the New Yorker for iPad. Perfectly readable. Works with iPad, not in spite of it. Fortunately I bought a single issue, not a subscription.

Ok. Not great depth. Expensive.. Lightweight articles. A bit repetitive over time - many of the same subjects crop up over again. And the price is just a little high. Especially since subscribers are restricted to downloading editions published while their subscription is active, unlike all other magazines I subscribe to which allow unlimited access to back issues while the subscription is active.

Seems to work ok. Ok. Like the magazine. Easier than finding on news stand.

Not Ready. Another publisher who thinks an appropriate app for this medium is to essentially have a huge PDF that is slow, slow, slow to load. This is why the publishing industry continues to flounder. Stick with Zinio: at least their PDF loads faster.

Much enjoyed!. I look forward to each month's iPad edition and each week's podcast. I particularly enjoy the 19th and 20th century articles. Once downloaded to my iPad, it conveniently goes everywhere with me. Thank you for the opportunity to enjoy often thought provoking articles. This and "Ideas" on Canadian Broadcasting (CBC) are much enjoyed.

Needs work. Turning pages is not smooth on this app like other magazine apps. I have to wait for the screen to come up - takes much longer than it should.

Excellent magazine devoted to British history. As an amateur student of British medieval history, I have found the articles and special issues on the13th-16th century to be very enlightening. I have also been introduced to a wide range of new authors to pursue!

Excellent magazine!. I really enjoy reading this magazine. I'm a civil engineer by education but i've always been sort of a history fan. This publication is easy to read and, as far as I can tell, the articles are well researched and solidly discussed. English is not my mother tongue, but as I said before, this magazine is usually written in a friendly and easy to understad prose.

Love the magazine. Keep up the good work. I like the constant improvements to the electronic edition. Added sidebars are interesting. Next step is links to academic articles relevant to the subject at hand so we can dive even deeper into the subject matter. Jim DR

great w/1 exception. I love getting the magazine on the iPad but I wish the crossword was included. The Countryfile magazine for iPad includes the crossword so why doesn't the history one? other than that this has been a nice option for me when tavelling.
