Great Dictionary App. I really enjoy using the app on my devices. It provides definitions, pronunciations, and origins of each word in addition to synonyms and antonyms for most. I use it all the time when I read a book or look for a better word when I am writing a memo. It also have word games in addition to word of the day to improve vocabulary which’s very convenient for me since English is my second language.

Re-title: Abridged dictionary. I love this app. Word origins are probably my favorite aspect of the app. Pro version is great with no advertisement, pronunciations and voice search. However, the app is definitely lacking full content and therefore should be labeled abridged dictionary. Minor complaint: when opening the app, the search field jumps from the top of screen to the center. Why? FYI: need to step up your game. I can ask google home for definitions that aren’t in this app and have answers in one second. You either need to integrate, offer more content (unabridged pro version) or provide a link to order hard copies of unabridged and see how many you can sell. The word origins may be key to the value of the app...

My Go To Dictionary!. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary app is most definitely my "go to" dictionary. The reason for four stars is because the app's search feature doesn't "guess" the word I'm after like other types of apps do. In other words, it's almost as if I have to already know how to completely spell a word in order to find it. This shouldn't be the case. The app should be able to guess which word I'm looking for, or else the "search" feature isn't really worth much. I'll put it this way; with a paper dictionary, I only have to know the first letter or two of a word, essentially, in order to find it. That should be the case with a digital dictionary as well, in my opinion. Also, I wish the "Word of the Day" feature had audio pronunciation included, which it does not. Otherwise, I enjoy the other features, including the word games!

A must have resource. Very well done and executed. Love all the quizzes, and the dictionary and thesaurus are both of unbelievable quality. I've noticed that mostly every review here is 4 or 5 stars, and most of the 4 stars are recommendations, not criticisms. (There's the one quack complaining about voice recognition being awful. Dude, seriously? Type it in. Voice recognition may fail you, but a keyboard won't.) Anyway, fantastic job! I have noticed however, while studying for my SAT, that some words are not here. I couldn't find apochryphal, which was unfortunate, but still a great job.

“Webster’s like a very good friend”. Always useful, always present. I’ve spent quality time with dictionaries most my life and Webster’s dictionary stands out amongst the rest. The app makes it simple and easy to carry a dictionary in ones pocket and remains current with new words added with a frequency that’s astonishing. Back in the day, one could be stuck with a paper bound dictionary that could never be updated until buying the most current edition again. With the app you can pay for the one time premium and it’ll maintain the most current edition year in and year out.

Fantastic dictionary app when it comes to researching vocabulary.. I love how this app is streamlined in a convenient way for the style that English words are constructed (I’m monolingual, not sure if it’s the same otherwise!). Notably, it’s handy to go back to words recently clicked on. This makes it quick to lookup synonyms, antonyms, prefixes, suffixes, etc., and return back to the original word to discover its origin. Would’ve been handy in the Latin and Greek Roots in English class I took last semester, but I’m glad I found it now :)

Best dictionary ever 😺😺😽😽😻😻. My mom got this for me a few weeks ago and ever since I fell I love with this app. This is better then the real book dictionary’s at school this Is very helpful, all you need to do is type the word that you need or want to know about and press search and it tells you the definition. If you need a dictionary don’t waste your time too find a book dictionary, go on the app and buy this app! PS. There is a thesaurus on the dictionary app as well, take your time to find the word you want and this is the easiest app to find a word.👍😊😊

Wish there was a faster way to access recents. I love using this app and have been doing so for years, but there are some features that would benefit the user experience. One thing that I know could help is a potential feature that could enhance the learning of words through a quick access button. Just going through the recents list would be so helpful in learning without using the flashcards. Looking forward to future updates!

Good app, just not great . . . yet.. This is a really good app. The quizzes are an added bonus that are really enjoyable. What would catapult this app into the great category would be a greater ability to discern exactly what I am trying to spell out. This app is the bane of poor spellers like myself. So, often times I have to get Siri to spell the word for me prior to inputting it into this app, which I am sure you can agree is a real drag. Often times I just get Siri to define it as well because you have to be nearly spot on with your spelling to get a definition. However, after minor self absorbed complaint, this truly is a helpful and most of the time a user friendly accompaniment.

Missing many words that are in the website version. The app is good if you need offline access, otherwise you’re better off just using the web version, which includes many words that are missing from the app (as I frequently discover when playing some popular word-puzzle games). Several times a week I try to look up a word in the app, and it doesn’t show it as a word, only for it to be there as a fully defined word on the web version of the same MA dictionary. Oh well!

Excellent but would like some adjustments. M-W does an excellent job with word definitions, etymological info, pronunciation (including audio pronunciations) and even include a very good Thesaurus. Illustrations are offered for some words, though we are often disappointed that more words are not illustrated. We enjoy the “Word of the Day” feature as well as the word/ vocabulary quizzes and Weekly Challenge. The Weekly Challenge, however, needs to allow more time per question simply because challengers need more time to READ the questions. This is especially true since the app states that it is appropriate for age 4+. Perhaps M-W could add two or three seconds per question.

Presented words list by date shown. This function of the program gives me elegant words and the date that they were originally released. It is so nice and is improving my vocabulary and thus makes me me a better author! Very nice! I look at the word of the day every single day as an author and a script writer, and learned from it from the definitions there in(If I don’t already know the definition). The words are extremely elegant! They help me to illustrate the points that I have in speech and communication… They allow me to Put forth the concepts that I have to get the idea across. Extremely useful and elegant! I love the English language! I love all different languages!

The most up-to-date and the most accessible US English dictionary at your fingertips. Kudos to Merriam-Webster, recent releases of this awesome dictionary app have become accessible for the visually impaired. And, needless to say, the app itself is fantastic in terms of its contents and the depth of information it provides. However, I have given four stars to this application because, one, the Word games section can become more accessible and it should be more easily playable by the visually impaired, and, too, the online version of Merriam-Webster Dictionary providesmore information and usage notes compared with the application. Please incorporate usage notes and synonym discriminations into the application.

Must Have. There’s a lot of things that I like about this app. The most obvious is that it downloads all of the content (except voice recordings) so I never have to worry about having internet access and it still takes up a very minimal amount of storage. Another is the combined thesaurus feature. I like to use the app to educate myself as well as whip out a quick definition whenever I get into an argument about a word! This app has one me quite a few of those ;)

Likely to be the best value dictionary out there. I haven't had to pay any extra to get the so called "additional features". Plain and simple - pay once and get an offline dictionary that offers pronunciation as well as comprehensive definitions even for the most peculiar words in English language. It does have a bonus quiz app that challenges your vocabulary and makes you realistically evaluate your English mastery. But over time we can all master it , thanks to such a convenient tool.

Homonyms & Incomplete Definitions. This review is based specifically around the watchOS version of the app, which just got an update. But alas, ‘twas an update that did not address the most critical shortcoming of the app, which is that you can only use voice dictation to look up words. Hence, one will only ever know the definition of “weather” because it will never know whether you meant wether. Until we get the ability to “scribble” (write in) a word to be looked up, it simply won’t be a very useful app on the watch. Additionally, it gives poor and totally incomplete definitions on the watch. Take “weather”, for instance. The watch only tells us the (rather useless) definition of the adjective form (of or relating to the side facing the wind). Why not the noun? You know, the one that is at the top of the list of definitions when you look it up on the iOS version of the app. Furthermore, why does it curtail the definition on the watchOS app? The screen can easily display text, and guess what, that little crown on the side, it allows you to scroll through text! So, theoretically, they could display all the definitions of a word, and we could simply scroll through to find the definition we’re looking for. And why no support for synonyms? Why why why?? What exactly did they update for the watch in this version of the app? I want my money back.

Needs some work. I like to think that for the Pro version, that this app can truly help a user build up their vocabulary. I wonder if there is any way to have the app give a notification of the word of the day? Notifications can definitely help me build up this habit. For Apple Watch, I would love to see Apple’s Scribble for a user’s text input. This could be a great help if a user may not be familiar with the pronunciation of a word. Having integration with SiriKit and Universal Search would most definitely improve usage of the app and help to see this app replace the system dictionary. One other thought would be to see the option to send a word via Apple’s Share Sheet to the dictionary. It would be great to add a list of words defined and be quizzed on them periodically for mastery. When using Apple Watch to search for definitions...I frequently received an error message of “please try again” when trying to search for words. When searching for words using Apple Watch, and it actually does provide a result, it would be wonderful to have synonyms come up for a word that is submitted. I would love for the Apple Watch to enhance my learning by providing quizzes for previously sought out definitions or synonyms. And is there anyway to mark someone’s progress in terms of reading level or vocabulary level? Lastly, I am curious if they are looking for beta testers to help give feedback and make the app more robust.

Love it...yet still room for improvement. The new UX and fonts are lovely. I also love the access to word of the day archive, even though I feel it should go even way back than than the current six-month window. That said, I’m in solidarity with those bemoaning the lack of support for split view. Please work on this. Also, think about integrating additional value-add services such as an idioms tab, word usage tips, etc; these would make this app a one-stop reference.

Good basic dictionary but missing words. I’m here today because of asystole, a word meaning the cessation of heartbeat and lack of electrical activity in the heart. This is just one of many words I’ve looked up that I didn’t find in this dictionary and had to look up online. This is a good basic dictionary but I’d like to see an unabridged dictionary become available. Its not like I’m reading technical journals or other specialized material. A lot of the words I can’t find are words I’ve found through the words with friends app, or from movies or tv. Asystole came from stargate SG-1. Basic network tv from the 1990’s is stumping this dictionary lol. All that said, I have no other complaints about this dictionary, though I’m here today to try a different dictionary. I see their competition has more words

M-W Defends The English Language. I switched from the Oxford dictionary app I previously had for what might appear to be political reasons yet is actually a non-partisan one: defense of word definitions. When President Trump began tweeting out non-sensical statements that twisted or hollowed out the very meaning of certain words he was trying to use in an Orwellian manner, M-W would tweet out a response that focused on the actual definition of the word in defense of meaningful language. It may have appeared partisan to some, but to me it was a simple & timely reminder that words are not empty vessels. They are not window dressing. They are the window itself and attempts to use them to communicate in a way that is deliberately counter to their actual meaning effectively gaslights an entire language & the very culture that relies on it. I am happy with the app, & even happier supporting a company that recognizes that defending the meaning of words is to defend its core reason for being. Thank you M-W.

OK as far as it goes...decent for high school, but lacking for serious academics.. LOVE THE WORD ORIGINS INFO! I’m a logophile, so the word root notes are important and beneficial to me. PLEASE keep and even expand these in future updates! HOWEVER, as I have found with most online resources and apps, it skimps in crucial places. I often find print versions to be far better because of the depth of information they contain. For example, the lists of synonyms and antonyms in this app are sorely lacking. They contain too much slang and are too short. And every time I’ve tried to use the THESAURUS, it has proved USELESS because it contains only the SAME synonyms and antonyms given in the dictionary! What’s the point, I wonder. I HAVE EARLY 80’s PRINT VERSIONS OF ROGET’S AND THE AMERICAN HERITAGE DICTIONARY THAT ARE MUCH MORE THOROUGH. So, all in all, useful only for convenience and superficial knowledge.

12 Pro Max (iOS 14.x). Please add support for landscape use and dark mode on iOS. Users have been waiting for years at this point. Forcing readers from landscape use of their devices and into portrait orientation always shatters immersion, and nighttime use of the app is unpleasant at best. These issues leave one to resort to stock alternatives (eg, Oxford) that operate in a manner consistent with both screen orientation and system theme. I almost never use the app anymore at this point. – – – – –FULL REVIEW: The quality of life improvements are welcome, as the user experience has improved in almost every conceivable way with this update. M-W’s form and function remain first in class, but many users would still like to see suggestions listed for misspellings, all too common on cramped virtual keyboards. Having to use fine scrolling or backspacing to the erroneous character has always felt tedious, even onerous. Another long-standing (ie, over four years and counting to date) request: LANDSCAPE SUPPORT. Many users are sick of being torn from landscape to portrait mode when multitasking. Minus two stars initially, then three, which feels generous because the devs are not listening. They also have not added support for dark mode in iOS. PLEASE ADD DARK MODE SUPPORT!

Substantial Coverage of the Language. I have been using a different dictionary in my smartphone for several years. I became somewhat put off by the direction it was going and went looking for another one. I have started using M-W and it is going well. This is not a newcomer, Merriam-Webster has been around for decades. This mobile version has a direct, thorough approach without lot of extraneous details and from my experience so far, without circular definitions. It includes good etymologies, and examples! The interface is professional—it doesn’t look like a game app: it looks like what it is, a reference. It’s clean with a simple design, and you can easily ignore the examples and etymologies if not interested. Recommended.

Won’t open!. Ever since my update to iOS 13, this app won’t open up for me. I tap it, the main screen comes up. It either crashes or stays on the main screen. If I’m not mistaken I paid for this app. (Not 100% sure if this was a paid app or not because I got it long ago and there was another that wasn’t a paid app but I upgraded to ad free so I’m sure it was paid for.) I would like for the app developers to fix this app. It was a great app prior to this mess. I use it, well USED it daily. Now I can’t.

Needs: UNabridged! Fast look-up! Spell-Guesser & more usage-controversy indicators. This is a decent, reliable app—Which Can Be IMPROVED: (1) WE NEED M-W’s UNABRIDGED VERSION!!! (I usually look up RARE words—the ones often NOT found in M-W’s Collegiate Dictionary app. There is ZERO reason M-W can’t provide access to its unabridged dictionary!) (2) Make Dictionary Look-ups FASTER! (I suggest programming the M-W Dictionary for its bread & butter: WORD LOOK-UPS!!!—Develop the software so I can IMMEDIATELY Enter the searched-for word, while ancillary portions of the app (e.g., games, or Word of the Day) are loading. (3) At least MENTION there is a USAGE Controversy when there is one, so the user may choose to do further study. E.g., M-W features “SUPPOSABLY”—but says nothing about the common usage error of substituting the word for “supposedly.” (4) Include PHONETIC GUESS / MisSpelling HELP in your word look-ups. All sorts of software, including that on search-engines, Wikipedia, etc., etc. help users find words—even if spelled incorrectly. One reason people use dictionaries is to LEARN the correct spelling[s] of a word! (This wd be LIGHT-Lifting, software development-wise!) presently, if a word is not PERFECTLY spelled, M-W will do NOTHING to allow me to look it up.

It is good, with one reservation—. Opens quickly, and authoritative definitions. But I use a dictionary for just one purpose on my iPad: to find the meaning of a word I just read on my tablet. Why can't I copy the word, open the dictionary and be presented with a ready to paste into search box? And the widget? Why is it only the "new" word of the day? This is a great dictionary that would rather rest in that wooden stand in the corner of the dining room of the home I grew up in. That is not my life today. Can I have a dictionary that works with me, rather than than against me? Or worse, stubbornly refuse to leave the wooden stand that now occupies space in the basement?

Update but still no keyboard support on iPad. Unquestionably one of my most used apps, I am thankful everyday for MW taking the time to develop this app. I move around a lot and being able to take a vital reference book with me is a gift. (And I really wish more publishers would follow in their footsteps.) But the fact that there is not simple keyboard functionality for the iPad app is ridiculous at this point. If you type in a definition with the keyboard, you have to either use the mouse or your finger to chose the word and show the definition. I asked this nearly a year ago over email and was told the suggestion was interesting, as if it was legitimately something they had never considered. Please, just simple arrow key and enter functionality. Please.

Versatile App; Good Workout. This is the only English dictionary app I bother with. It offers a variety of exercises and options (such as word of the day) which are useful to review, reinforce, and increase vocabulary “muscle.” Just for “funzies” I also bought a Word a Day calendar whose definitions are derived from Webster, and it’s a good supplement. I’m a big fan of writing and collect words and linguistic principles for fun. I’ve gathered some pretty word gems this way. This app goes into etymology briefly - just enough to whet your whistle. It’s the right mix of concise and in-depth for an app. Thanks for offering it, guys!

Quenched and Sated Word Nerd!!. This is my favorite dictionary/thesaurus app, and I’ve run through them all. As someone who LOVES words, looks them up all day, not so much to expand my vocabulary anymore, but to study subtle nuances, origins and archaic and obsolete uses. Each word has MANY examples used in MEANINGFUL sentences that clearly delineate each use. The examples are sometimes famous quotations or literary excerpts (neat!) The common ‘Word of the Day’ feature is more interesting than usual, as it has a “Did you know?” section after the standard definition, expanding on etymology and evolution of meaning. Newer versions save search history as a running list across the top of screen, making it simple to access previous look-ups and to toggle back-and-forth between words for comparison. You can also toggle between dictionary and thesaurus with a single click.

Sorry...Word of the day is back. I purchased this app Merriam-Webster Dictionary Pro, Premium ad-free Dictionary many years ago. Admittedly, I had not utilized it very much in the intervening years. Imagine my surprise when I try to use it, specifically the word of the day, it’s not working. It keeps saying I need network connection. And why is word pronunciations not working on some words while working on others. I have to say I don’t like this updated app. Update: There must be a lag time in receiving the word of the day from when I downloaded the app. Because it’s back!

Nice, but missing a feature and definitions. This is the only dictionary I use outside of the built-in iOS dictionary, but it’s missing an important feature: integration with search. When typing in the iOS system search, nothing appears for the MW dictionary. I see an entry for the word in the system dictionary though. This means that I have to launch the MW app before searching, an extra step vs. other apps (this despite having “Search & Siri Suggestions” on for the MW app). Also, the dictionary seems to be missing some definitions vs. the web site. For example, “apocatastatis”. Esoteric? Sure, but that’s why I need a dictionary! If I just wanted to look up common words, I’d use the built-in dictionary.

Handy, concise, but….. This would be even better if the app could be programmed to toggle easily and quickly as I that as I’m reading I can look up words without having to leave the app I’m in. Also, I’d like the ability to touch a spot on the word definition page so I can keep an ongoing list of new words and their definitions to review periodically. And I’d also like more small illustrations, if, in fact the word pertains to or is an object or an action pertaining to a noun (such ad running ortteins to people m, horses, computer programs, motors, cars, and blenders of fans, etc.

beautiful and thoughtfully designed GREAT! 😊. I'm so happy I found this fun and lovely app! It's by far the best of my three dictionary apps. The design is complete, the layout assists in making it easily usable, and I've finally heard the correct pronunciation of a word I've wondered about for years! The word-of-the-day today was very interesting and I look forward to more! I'm glad it doesn't require a constant internet connection because I can't afford to be online very often. And I'm sure glad they had this Pro paid version because I'm anti-subscription, and anti-ad. Thank you Merriam-Webster! 😍✨

Not complete. This is a decently designed app - but it doesn't appear to be a complete version of the MW dictionary. In the short time I've had it I've already found several words that are in the web version of MW but not the app. "Henge", for instance. If it's not the complete dictionary then what's the point?! At least with a dictionary you know that the entry is not there, but with the thesaurus you wouldn't even know the word was missing. The thesaurus is worse than the dictionary, missing bafflingly common words - 'key' in the sense of lock and key, 'rock' in the sense of stone etc, etc. I like the app design - but if it fails at its fundamental purpose then it's hard to give it a high rating.

Back To The Book. I really enjoy this app. Before smartphones and apps became popular, I always looked up a word in the MW Dictionary to start my day. On the days I didn’t have access to the dictionary I missed out on my word of the day. Today, I always have my smartphone on me which means I have access to the MW Dictionary app. Therefore I will always get my word of the day. The MW Dictionary not only provides a word of the day, but challenging word games as well. If you’re into words, then this is the app for you.

AWESOME!. This is one of the very first apps I purchased way back when Apple came out with the iPhone 3 and the App Store had a limited amount of apps. Fast forward to my current iPhone 11 Pro Max I rely heavily on this app for its obvious intended purpose of spelling and definition, however I love the addition of the voice pronunciation of the words. It has improved my knowledge and saved me the embarrassment of misspelling and miss pronunciation of words. It has also had the side benefit of helping me win bets on how words are spelled or pronounced. I couldn’t imagine having to do without it!

Value of this app. I’ve always loved words/and learning/using new ones when I speak. Today I pulled out a book which was highlighted/underlined, and had circled words I’d not ever looked up. I like to try to figure out their meanings in the context of the sentence/paragraph, but then want to confirm how on or off the mark my educated guess has been. Having this app allows me to speedily locate the word, learn how to pronounce it, find its’ meaning, identify synonyms/antonyms, as well as determine the meaning most suited to its’contextual use. I’m always learning and growing-Merriam Webster is still a cornerstone in my development!

A little cluttered and could be more accessible. This app is pretty nice, and it has a lot of features for vocab building and the like. It also works pretty well as both a dictionary and thesaurus. However, it’s not the most streamlined. More pressing, some prominent elements are images, not text,. Therefore, they are not recognized by voiceover. This would be less of an issue, but these non text elements take up the majority of the main dictionary page. Additionally, I’ve encountered this problem where once I look at the word of the day, again, a big image at the top of the page that can’t be read, I am unable to return to the menu. The menu is there, but when tapping on the icon, voiceover reads the word of the day banner. Therefore, extraneous inaccessible components prevent this app from being my convenient, go to pocket dictionary.

Essential app but somewhat lacking. I use this app constantly. I love that you can hear a word’s correct pronunciation, that you can see words you looked up recently, and all of its other features. To the developers, however, I’d like to suggest 2 functions I often wish it had: 1) a “BACK” arrow to go back to the list or word you were previously looking at (instead of having only the main menu to work with), and 2) a way to BROWSE the dictionary like you can with a physical one — without having to use the search feature. Thanks!

Nice app, but.... Nice dictionary app, but a few things: —You ask how we feel way too much, you don’t just ask every couple day, weeks, or months, but mutilple times a day, I’m not sure if it’s based off time, or words looked up, but please, stop. Do not just make it a tad less, but at least make it every couple days or longer that you ask in app how we feel. Until then, I’ll tap the frown face, because this alone is annoying. Feature requests —I think it would help a lot if this app had a spell checker. As you type, it’s not just looking for words you might be typing, but words you might have meant. For example if you typed “kat” “cat” would be an option. Of course this would go for bigger and more complex words too. This would also make it easier if the speaker isn’t available, or you just don’t want to use it. —Another feature I think would be nice is a feature that I think some dictionary apps/programs call “wildcards”. For example you could type “c*d” and it would find all words that start with c and end with d or “c*r*d” for the same thing. * would be any amount of letters between the two letters it’s between. In addition to the * for many letters, a ? for one letter. For example “c?b” would find a words that start with c, end in b, and have one letter in between. “c?a?e” would turn up crate. It would be nice if we could do the above in addition to any number or combination of ? and *. Please add these features, I really think they would add to the app.

Quick Reference Guide and Vocabulary Extender. M-W app is a convenient "pocket" resource for definitions, synonyms and antonyms. Also, the whimsical vocabulary-building word quizzes are fun and entertaining. I often refer to this app to avoid using repetitive words and cliched language, and to review definitions I've taken for granted. However, it is opined that adding a "spell-check" algorithm will be useful to one who is uncertain about spelling - a basic reason why one refers to a dictionary. Additionally, M-W is an easy, fast resource to use when confronted by an unfamiliar word employed by a more erudite wordsmith.

Easy to use, fun, and full of knowledge. It's a much better dictionary than most of the free or crowd-sourced dictionaries, it offers timely, updated language and offers greater insight into words. I love the easy pronunciation button, the history of the words, and the "Where did you hear this word" comments left by users. You can easily switch between the dictionary and a great thesaurus as well! On top of the essential dictionary/thesaurus function, there are explanatory blogs, and quizzes and games to improve and/or test your vocabulary. I use this app nearly every day!

Expanding my vocabulary. I have been using this app for over three years now and have discovered some features as I have worked through my high school education. My favorite has to be the word games that work within the app to challenge my word knowledge and to help me expand my ability to name parts of objects that I didn't even think had a name. This app is also helpful as some dictionary apps don't supply the etymology of words which helps give context when reading older literature. Since, I have the propensity to read some books with quite the odd assortment of words I find myself using this app more than I would like to admit. But, thanks anyway for if this app didn't exist I would be doomed in English class.

Love Merriam-Webster's app! Thanks!. Merriam-Webster’s dictionary app is great for anyone learning English. I especially like synonyms, antonyms, and thesaurus features which give me related words and phrases at every word. This app has clear and high-quality audio pronunciations, sentences, and concise definitions. Also, it nicely displays the parts of speeches. I utilize its favorite feature to save words and study them. Another smart and cool feature is that this app beautifully syncs with my Apple devices. Also, it works offline even though its audio pronunciation doesn’t work. I can add the words to favorite or delete the saved words offline, and once my Apple devices are online, they automatically sync. This app is an excellent dictionary. Kudos to everyone who developed this extraordinary dictionary app; thank you to developers for this awesome app! I love it! The best is yet to come....

Simply the best. This is the only online dictionary I use or recommend. It has so many (free) ways to help people expand their vocabulary, and these extras work for high school & college, to writing for personal reasons. That’s the extra that I use, and love, the most; the common synonyms & antonyms, but also M-W includes a lot much more. The one that’s best for me & my writing is the origin of the words, including the approximate historical date (in centuries) in which the word was “created” and who most likely created it. At times I find that the original meaning (as used when it was created) is very different to the present day meanings! I went ahead & bought the pro-version, as I use it so often in my writing. I’ve found that M-W the dictionary to be the most user friendly, & helpful. Apologies, but I don’t remember how much is was. I only remember that it wasn’t very much. Just try it, (even the free version still has almost all the things I’ve mentioned.) use it for awhile & compare it to the other online dictionaries. I’m confident that you’ll pick, & stay with, the Merriam-Webster dictionary. 👍🏼

Best dictionary and Thesaurus app!. This app is absolutely amazing. I have tried most of the other main dictionary apps, and none of them come close. I use it every day to look up words and learn. I have used it while I was at university, and now that I am a researcher I use it in my research work. I love that words can be marked to review later like flash cards so I can learn them and expand my vocabulary. And the Thesaurus is indispensable to my writing. The great job is to the developers! From a Harvard student.

A daily reference!. As someone who always had a M-W dictionary by almost every chair, and someone dragged into the digital age (I’m 80), the app came to my attention recently as I became more familiar with my iPhone and its wonders. I installed it recently and LOVE it. One of my favorite features is the ability to hear the words pronounced. The app is easy to use and gives me the understanding I need. Gone are those thick books—well, I have one somewhere, just in case. In the meantime it enhances my reading and writing.

Screwed out of $10 and wasted a bunch of my time. I already subscribed to the dictionary and wanted to add the thesaurus so I bought this app. However, when I opened it (with or without signing in, which it gave as an option) I got the dictionary only, same app as I had, not the one picture here with the thesaurus option. No option under any of the menus either. I uninstalled both apps and reinstalled the dictionary/thesaurus app, same thing. I don’t care about the money but this is extremely frustrating. So now I either have to do searches to figure it out or just not have the thesaurus. Yep, will do without, will get a thesaurus app instead. Not worth trying to figure out how to get refunded either.

Extremely Useful.. I I love the word of the day. I use this app daily. 5/5 star rating. I recommend it to everyone I know. know. is one of the best reference apps ever but I couldn't find an American version. Aside from that it's great for high school or college students. The vocal pronunciation component helps me comprehend and absorb the definitions even better. It also gives me more confidence to integrate a new word in a conversation and feel comfortable about it. This app is quick to access and does not make such a chore to build up my personal vocabulary. Let's face it— Going out of my way to physically look up a word in a giant book is not something I would normally do in order to learn about a new word... Now, I can learn definitions in seconds + hear the pronunciations on the spot. I use it in my everyday life and because of it's quick & easy access, my personal vocabulary is now more extensive. This app is a very useful tool and a Must Have. Anything that helps me be lazy yet still learn new things gets five stars! I LOVE THIS APP! Thank You! :D

Amazing Tecnology. I’m so thrilled I lived long enough to experience this technology. Got the Premium edition for $5 bucks. Best five bucks I ever spent. Push the microphone and say the word, and bingo, there it is, both dictionary and thesaurus. How incredible! As a college student writing term papers, I could spend hours flipping through the dictionary my family gave me for high school graduation, trying to find just the right word. Now it’s instantly in front of me. Oh, the joy that floods my soul! Thank you Mr. Webster for hiring computer geeks! Love those people!!

Fun, easy to use, handy app. I've always found it useful, including word of the day. Games are fun and a good way to learn new words as well

Search and database. Search feature is poor. Have to type words correctly, no misspelled words suggestions. Many words cannot be found.

Does the job. I've found this App to be quite useful.

The pronunciation function doesn't work. The pronunciation function doesn't work

Webster's dictionary. Well done developers and appreciate your app as it becomes exciting with every update. Yours in Christ

Poor Thesaurus. The thesaurus needs work, there are free options out there that provide better options - disappointing investment for $7.99

Best dictionary. Always trust love it...

Dictionary. This is as good as they get, I love it. I still love your Dictionary. I still love this app would recommend it to everyone. Cheers, SBM.

Great app. Only just down loaded it with no problems. Doing a BA program and wanted to start a lexicon workbook. App is very intuitive, I find my word and then just save it as a favorite, just what I wanted.

On the learning curve, better late then never. Great app to pull words from the black hole of my memory and my inability to spell.

Best dictionary app ever.. Really helpful and informative. Great app.

WOW!. Just beautiful

Excellent App. Absolutely brilliant dictionary. My favourite app.

A Mandatory Resource. I'm sure if Noah Webster could see how far his modernisation/zation of the English language has come, he'd be amazed. An excellent reading and writing companion for the curious reader or writer, even for those who use UK English.

Merrimack Webster. Totally totally useless I bought the app, having somehow forgotten Google

Good but can be improved further. For English as second language learners, would be good to add flash cards feature to store new words and for later revisit. Something like 'Quizelet'.

Learning tool. This is a great app to learn and have fun with language. It becomes a convenient way to expand your vocabulary and general knowledge. I use it often.

Offline access sometimes fails without internet connection. Generally works ok but despite paying for the Pro version which promises offline access, I was unable to view basic definitions for some words when my internet connection was down.

Best dictionary and definitions EVER!!!. I absolutely love this app it’s got great definitions and wonderful games it’s absolutely awesome! Also, the definitions are very good and easy to understand.the only thing you could improve on is making the games a little bit easier. Except that I think this app is amazing.

Peter... A really handy app. Great to have the synonyms and antonyms to find just the right word.

Love it. Easy and quick to use. Simple how I like it.

Excellent. Forget about the pronunciations if you're not American. However, the definitions are excellent for anyone speaking the English language, with an excellent list of synonyms and Antonyms and great examples. It could be improved by having more than one word of the day and a shake to bring up new words function like word book. For $2.99 it's fabulous.

Lelluccio. A wonderful app! Thank you!

amazing. one of the best dictionary in app store :)

useful app. Salam, it deserves every cent you paid on it .

Very useful for English learners. The new version is smaller, and everything is as good as before, except that the Word of the Day is not working.

Akwas. One of the best dictionaries I have come across. Authentic and Easy, as I am not looking for an encyclopaedia with very long definition/s on the subject matter. Always! check for the "Authentic or Genuine" dictionary when purchasing the book form as they have certain things like logos, etc to look out for or ask someone that knows so you can get value for your money. Another clue is where it was made too. Enjoy!

Yankee accent. Dreadful pronunciation. Sounds like a drunken Yankee. Please offer some more English choices. Otherwise a good app.

x. 👍

Updated and suits the screen of iPhone 5. This dictionary is very handy and informative. It also provides audio recognition and pronunciation function.

Needs more features. Good app but can be improved. Adding spaced repetition flash cards would be a nice feature to have, considering that other free dictionary apps like Japanese has this feature, I think adding this would not be difficult.

Opening up this loving language to me!. This dictionary is invaluable to mastering the English language. It’s polished presentation and execution is exceptional!

Quick response. There was an app breakdown episode. I contacted the company and they fixed the problem within 12hrs. That was pretty impressive.

English Studies. This is now a very reliable resource, and with the complete Thesaurus adding to the value, it becomes an indispensable tool for writers and researchers. Well worth the five stars. Robert

The greatest dictionary app ever. Precisely organised, different definitions of a word come in short at the beginning , prepares your mind with the whole concept of the definition. To convey more accurate message, there are some examples that not only does exemplify the definition and usage of the words but also they smartly imply the correct situations and atmosphere for using the word.

Bug-ridden - please fix!. App only allows one word search before it doesn't allow words to be typed into the search bar (app needs to be reopened before another word can be searched)

Very compact and practical!. Never be lost for words again with this amazing app!

Merriam web. Absolutely brilliant!! Has to be one of the best apps ever. I use it all the time. love it!

This should be one of Essentials list!. An essential app. The quizzes are very fun too.

Microphone.. The free app had the microphone, BUT the microphone is not available after purchasing the premium edition. This is incredible. Could you please repair so I can get on with my work?

Great dictionary app, and two requests. Excellent - streamlined and intuitive app interface, thesaurus, synonyms and antonyms all just a click away. Thorough without being overburdened. Requests: 1/ the entry for ‘aseity’ is missing, despite appearing on your online version. 2/ the email link within the app works only in the ‘Mail’ app, which I have dont have installed because, being a gmail user, it’s superfluous to me. Please make the email link usable via other apps, or at least make it a copy able link, otherwise, one is stuck writing tech requests here in the app reviews instead.

Fantastic. Very detailed and accurate. Keep up the great work

No pronunciation when phone muted. I love this app. Especially the tons of examples given to demonstrate the use of a word. Very important for me, since I am not a native english speaker... but here is also the problem: the dictionary wouldn't pronounce the word (by clicking the speaker symbol) when the phone is muted... since my phone is almost always muted, I first thought the function is broken, until I got a hint from the internet... I think, switching the speaker on and off again everytime I want to use this function is not a solution... very good app, very good dictionary, but without the pronunciation working I can only give three stars...

Now works with iOS 8!. This is the best dictionary app on the App Store (even the Play Store!) They've fixed the keyboard iOS 8 bug:)

Best Dictionary I've Ever Had. Comprehensive and handy.

So far so good. I'm studying in Australia, so I wish there is an option to choose American spelling or British spelling

I use my Webster’s dictionary every day, I love words and their stories.. Mary Alan Webster’s Dictionary is the best dictionary for me, love it and the word games app.

The best. Quick, easy, and with the pronunciation voice, the best.

Great dictionary. But should list all the parts of speech such as the noun, adjective and verb of the word. All derivatives as well. This will make it head and shoulders above others.

No Ads!. Premium is a blessing, no ads, super useful app and really easy to use too.

THIS APP IS NOT AD-FREE!!! DON'T BUY IT!. Google provisions ads on thus app! In what language does that mean ad-free???!

Good app. Useful tool for English learner

Love it. Purchased with a one time fee with none of this yearly membership nonsense. Loaded with thorough definitions, synonyms and examples. I highly recommend.

Failed to load properly. Stop to respond after iOS 13.1.1 update Reinstall doesn’t help

Accurate and simply good. This dictionary is always helpful, it has precise meaning and definitions. There is bug in the app which mute the music player or podcasts while switching to this app.

An excellent app. I’m fussy about spelling, usage, and pronunciation, so I use this app at least a few times a week, and as far as I know, it’s the best dictionary app out there. They even update from time to time with new words, and new usages. Ive had this app for about 8 years, and I’m definitely getting my money’s worth.

Word tools. This is a great app for finding the meaning of words and expanding word usage.

My most used app. I use this app all the time. I believe I paid for an ad-free version. It’s great, easy to use and gets me through the NYTimes crossword. Love it.

Great App, Great Leaning Tool. When you decide to de-clutter your device to, perhaps, free up space this is the very last App to be removed. Excellent Work!

It is a very high Application-Program-Book. And I thank you for for

Great with the new updates. The new updates let you learn new words even those we read with what it’s happening around the world.

Trusted dictionary!. This dictionary is a survivor! I had their paper version, then I bought a CD-ROM which was a telling commitment considering the scant student budget. And I’ve been enjoying the app for a few years now. Glad to see the app has high ratings! Keep surviving Webster, keep thinking outside the box, sky’s the limit!

Illegal Advertising popup. This app circumvents my iOS settings not to display popups.

Fast and reliable. Greatly cuts down the time I need to find definitions and I rarely need to exit the application to find a definition somewhere else. I’d love to see a medical dictionary plugin be implemented in the future!

Not as good as before. The recent update has resulted in significant slowdown of accompanying audio file.

No wildcard search?. Why?

Everyday. There's rarely a day when i don't use this app. It's become an essential tool.

Search bar. It’d be great if the search bar was located right above the keyboard rather than at the top.

Great Dictionary; great app!. I hI

Best Dictionary App Out There. Have an older iPad mini, which kept crashing the app on me, but the new update fixed the problem! Thanks! Love this app!

It’s just OK. Needs updating. Many words not in dictionary.

Review. The app is very convenient to use when I am reading on my iPad. I have the app on my iPad and iPhone also.

convenient in the pocket. great tool

Amazing👌. Gr8 dictionary and Thesaurus app😄

Helpful. Accurate, authentic explanation, and easy to use for a second language English speaker

Funtastic. This dictionary & thesaurus combo provides much inspiration. The word games are really fun and I am learning a lot about meanings and nuances.

Love MW!!. It’s a great app. Easy to use. Love!

Here’s my review!. ZERO star! Paid in full but this app hardly gets any update / new features / etc unlike their subscription version!

Great. Love it especially Word of the Day and word pronunciation!!

Using the dictionary while reading fiction and non-fiction. The only way the dictionary must be improved is to define more words, especially words used by writing in English in North and South Asia.

Love the word games. Very helpful to build vocabulary

Great dictionary. This ap is easy to use and what I really like is the audio pronunciations. I love to check out the definitions of new words and use this nearly every day. Concise definitions from a trusted source in dictionaries!

Dictionary review. First time trying it so we will have to practice

great dictionary, great app. No other app comes close.

Overall solid app. My only beef is that the Dictionary and Thesaurus buttons jump to bottom of the screen after tapping on a word from the search results. Feels like they should stay close to where they were during the initial search.

LOVE IT!!. It is helpful writing assignment papers. The app is always running on my side screen.

crash when swipe right!. Crash and also few examples

Helpful!😀. 😄

Good. Ok that’s all

Indispensable!. Super helpful app. Use both dictionary and thesaurus everyday. The games are fun too.

Great Dictionary. It is wonderful app . It is extensive source of vocabulary , with clear and nice audio.

OK. Dictionary is ok, Merriam-Webster just need to make some definitions easier since learner’s isn’t available on mobile

Ok. Pretty cool but, I know that I can find better easily. It’s like 60%. Just pass.

Love it. A must to carry around. I wish there is an ability to sync your favourite words on other device.

dictionary very good to learn and full of meaning to look up. Very good for use.

App freezes. App doesn't work anymore. Freezes now on opening logo, which has the search box superimposed on it. Using an iPhone 6.

An answer u need one without excessive verbosity.. First rate. Always clear and concise.a college

A huge annoying bug!. The dictionary is amazing but the tech support make me upset. I cannot open the dictionary even the webster website when I log in my account after saved about 2000 words. The worst thing is I want to contact you to report that bug. Guess what? I cannot open your website!

Very handy, but.... As a resource for reference or as a learning tool, you can’t really go wrong. I genuinely like having this tool on hand. As an APP, though, I do feel it’s not as good as it should be. The speech recognition tool is lacking in quality. I don’t mean to sound harsh, but I feel that “as an App”, a few tweaks are in order. Other than that, I can’t really complain, and would highly recommend this. Regardless of criticism, it’s worth 5 stars!

Always on my device. I have always had a Merriam Webster Dictionary on my portable device. I had one on my Compaq iPaq and all of my iPhones. I still have a paperback version from my Navy Days. I used to read the dictionary in boot camp because there was nothing else I could get my hands on. Much to the dismay of my fellow recruits. Who mocked me for reading the dictionary. Troglodytes the whole lot of them. I tried the Oxford dictionary app but honestly it doesn’t live up to the its own hubris and definitely not worth the price. This is my go to dictionary. I would like to see a section for idioms and metaphors. I have used this dictionary for years, every now and then I look up a word that is not in here. So, more definitions please.

Class act app. This app has a thoughtful design and is beautifully written for ease of use while brimming with helpful information. A user can skim the surface for the basic meaning of a word, or, they can delve deeply into the broader understanding of word’s origen, contemporary usage, evolving nature and its synonyms/antonyms without having to leave a page. Further search within the app for its various features and functions is so easy to do, again, thanks to the clean, uncluttered design.

It's outstanding and I owe much more to this dictionary app than the English teachers. I have been using this app from the beginning of its publication and I have been enjoying the functions that this dictionary has brought alongside. Thank you to the team. I'm hoping the message will encourage the team to improve further and continue to surprise the readers/users.

Missing features from web version. I downloaded the paid version hoping it would have the same content as the web version, including sentence examples taken from the web, “Did you know?”, and “Choose the right synonym”. If I had known those features were not included in the paid app version, I would have just stuck with the free version. That said, still a quality dictionary app. Just lacking the features that make it stand out online.

Virtual professional life saver. The app is a good companion. For it’s more of a friend. There are many times in my line of work that I need to attend meetings and speakers make deeper word choices than I do. This app on the iPhone saves me from embarrassment when called upon to voice an opinion or 2. They think that I am on a social media app when I am looking at my phone screen.

Very good, but.... While this is my go-to app, there are a few shortcomings which keep it from being a ‘five’. First is the inability within the app to back fill mistyped letters or two words which run together, as I might add is being done on my iPhone as I type this. Second, there are too many ‘urban dictionary’ or other more esoteric words that I feel should be available. Perhaps there is another version of this app which is more robust.

Compared to the rest, M-W’s app is the best.. a follower of the doctrine of antinomianism adjective relating to or influenced by Antinomianism The above is an example of WordBook’s definitions. So often they are circular. I used to hold the Oxford dictionary in high esteem. The unabridged version in print is excellent. But the app is a far cry from the printed unabridged version. As for the word for the day? It is randomly generated. Really Oxford? How dumb is that? Don’t waste your time or money on Oxford’s app. Merrium-Webster Pro is fantastic. Word for the day is chosen from contemporary usage. The definitions are not circular. You understand what a word means. With WordBook, the circular definitions are frankly meaningless. There are many nice features of M-W’s dictionary including ease of use. And don’t neglect to sign up for their newsletter: “M-W’s Word of the Day.” Thank you M-W for a great resource!

Must have app!!!. No doubt this is the best personal English dictionary app available. Simply excellent. Im French leaving in the U.S for over 15 years and this app really helps me improve my vocabulary on daily basis. Super easy to use and very efficient. Totally worth the money. Sure you might find something as good but the UI is the best I’ve found and it’s use is flawless. So good it’s almost like American-English became my first language.

Old version far better. I give the app 1 star because zero stars appears not to be an option. Back before they rolled out the new version that required payment to void ads, the dictionary data base contained geographical information and now it doesn’t. Try looking up Galápagos Islands in the new version; it’s not there. Beyond lame. I made a similar comment way back, but it appears now to have disappeared into oblivion. I have retained a copy of the old version on my iPad and never updated the version on my iPhone. I will continue to use the old version until it ceases to function with iOS. At that time I will say sayonara and regret the loss.

Brilliant and Logical Design. I purchased this App to support the developers. Brilliant design overall! Easy to use with what I perceive to be an attempt at intuitive learning. Having the Thesaurus built in along with the Dictionary is a big win! I’m presently not aware of any SIRI integration but given the present layout I won’t be surprised if that comes later via update. This is definitely worth the $4.99 purchase price ....

Very Great App :). The free version works fine and very well, only the ads’ constantly popping up sometimes compromised the experience. The pro version is totally worthy of the money and game changing. One small question: What’s the difference among the pro version (or + version), the free version with subscription, and the Learner’s Dictionary?

Daily food for the brain. Whether pinning down a definition, learning a new word, or replacing a well-worn adjective, this app is simply superb! The quizzes for broadening the mind are truly a terrific aid to moving forward in continuing education, as well as marvelous fun. And the daily new word section has given me the occasional addition to my vocabulary. In case you haven't realized it by now, this is one of my favorite apps ever! Keep up the good work!

I use this every day!. As kids, we had to read a book and make an oral report if we wanted some pocket money. There was also a rule: we do not ask Daddy for the meaning of a word. A huge dictionary was part of the living room decoration: we should just go to it. I got used to this and I would carry small dictionaries all over, until it got extremely discomfortable. Problem solved now with M-W app! Thank you!!!

Incredibly useful. I have been using this app for about a year now, and it has saved me so many times. I write quite a lot and, while going through an actual dictionary can be entertaining, it gets aggravating at times. Also! I had requested that they include an archive of all the “word of the days” so that I could go back and study them to enhance my diction... AND THEY ACTUALLY DID IT. I was amazed and blissful that they listened. Thank you for being such a helpful app!

Excellent Value. This is app is always good to have in the back pocket. I love that fact that there is no monthly/annual subscription. The UI is easy to navigate and familiar. The only thing I wish this app had more of, is a more thorough section explaining the etymology of the words. What is does provide is sufficient, I would say, but there is definitely some room for improvement. Overall, an excellent tool to have!

This is a great app!. This app is the best of what it is for. Never will you find a better dictionary app. It has word of the days, and quizzes every week or so. It does have a built-in thesaurus. The only suggestions I might have is to include words like Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, and to have a definition search where you type the definition and search for the word (I usually need to search for a word more than I need the definition).

Word of the day access to network problem. I’m using iPad 5th generation with iOS 13.5 software. I can’t really be sure when the problem started, but I just noticed it this week. After deleting and reloading the app, it will work for that day. The next day, it doesn’t. I tap on the app, it opens, I tap on the Word of the Day ‘Learn More’, that’s when the error message ‘nothing to see here...need network access ...’ appears on the page. So I delete and reload the app again to work. The next day, it doesn’t work. Hope this helps. Looking forward to the fix soon.

Best paid app you can get. After a year of using the free version, I decided to switch to paid. Not that the ads were annoying in the free version (in fact, they were the least intrusive of any ads I’ve ever gotten in a free app), I just wanted to upgrade to the features offered in the paid version and start to build my vocabulary.

Interesting and helpful. I couldn’t agree with the previous reviewer more! S/he included everything I would have said except that I use the free version. I like the pronunciations, especially of foreign words and phrases incorporated into English. Antonyms and synonyms are helpful with my writing and I’m really interested in etymologies. I love the videos and quizzes as well. I use this app almost daily.

Great Dictionary. Reading is one of my favorite past times. Now, whenever I lie down or sit down to read I have my phone by my side so I can access this app. I also like to browse through the Word of the Day section as it is an opportunity to learn new words or to learn more of old words. It is fast to use and has just the right amount of information.

UI is somehow too sensitive/aggressive. Some of the navigation, like the pull from left of the screen to go back and some other details are not consistent with the rest of the iOS. They demand too much attention to function properly. It feels excruciating sometimes. The app seems to be designed for web and dumped in appstore for iOS.

Disappointed.... This “premium, ad-free” version of the app lacks features that can be found in the free version. The biggest downfall is that the ability to log in to your account has not been introduced to this version. However, you can do that on the free one. There have been no updates for the premium app for 11 months. It appears this has been neglected by the developers, which is sad to see. I paid $5 for this and I am left using the free version more often. This receives 2 stars because the ads are eliminated. That’s the only plus.

Love this app!. I love the way I can speak the word & it will come up with the spelling for me. It’s my go to place if I wonder how a word is pronounced out loud! Quite often I look up words when I don’t know what a word means or even if I just “think” I know what they mean, just to be sure. I especially appreciate that it is a reliable source.

Clear definitions and a joy to use. First off, I find the definitions much more clear than another popular dictionary app I was using. And it's got fancy tech stuff like you can get the definition of words within the definition of the word you're looking at by simply touching that word. I use it all the time. I love it. I bought the premium version - $4.95 - because I don't like ads and I want to support great apps.

I like and love it!. I’ve used this app for years. It is reliable and excellent. They never eff up the UX or other stupid things and it never breaks. And it has good content of course. Easy to use. I don’t like to review but the deal is I use this app ALL the time so they deserve my top notch thumbs up review! Great app. For example:!!! hob·gob·lin\ˈhäb-ˌgäb-lən\ noun : an ugly or evil creature that plays tricks in children's stories : something that causes fear or worry Full Definition 1 : a mischievous goblin 2 : bogey, bugaboo Examples intimidated by the hobgoblins of etiquette in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, Puck is a hobgoblin who plays pranks such as spoiling milk and tripping old ladies Origin: 1hob. First use: 1530 Synonyms: brownie, dwarf, elf, faerie (alsofaery), fay, gnome, goblin, gremlin, fairy, kobold, leprechaun, pixie (also pixy), puck, sprite, troll

A great English Language resource. I teach college English both to native and non-native speakers. This dictionary has proven to be a great resource. I use it as a teaching tool and my students use it as learning tool. I strongly recommend it because it has a wide yet deep coverage of the language and its use, and it remains up-to-date in its constantly expanding lexicon. I have used the hard copy for decades and the app for close to ten years. A great resource!

Disappointed. I have owned this app a long time and regard it highly. I always recommend it to others interested in a dictionary. However recently when my phone updated or the app itself updated, I found it does NOT support dynamic text. That means I can’t change the size of the text you see on the page. This is extremely annoying to have text post so large that you can’t see one whole definition without scrolling. I am ready to give it up but to where do I turn?

Great app, this is a must have. This app is awesome and very user friendly. The etymology part of the app is one of my favorites, although the easy transition between dictionary and thesaurus is great also. You can click on any word in a definition, and it will take you to that words definition, whether it is highlighted or not. This is an excellent app that should be on all the devices of people who read and love words.

M-W Dictionary. Wonderfully helpful when reading nearly anything, especially non-fiction. I use it for the pronunciation as much as the definition; maybe more. I took a star off because, while it keeps a list of all the words I looked up (select “recent”) there is no option to alphabetize that list, which I would find helpful when reviewing the list, which I do frequently when waiting in various situations. Great app. Alec

2 suggestions. Overall very helpful app. Only 2 suggestions to make it perfect: 1. Allow showing definition of first word in search list by pressing return key. 2. Allow input in the search box by pulling down the page. These 2 suggestions are made because we have to reach the top of the screen to search and pick a word. That’s too far away for single hand operation.

I’ll give it 5 stars when........ They get rid of all the unnecessary crap like games and word of the day, etc. i spent money on this app so I can get rid of ads and garbage that I do t need to see in a dictionary. All I ask is for a clean simple interface with the ability to just type in the word I want to look up, without all the unnecessary games and garbage. Easy to use and logical. I wish all apps were written as well as this one! With many features, instead of saying, "I wish it did this or that," I find myself thinking, "It does do this or that." It is not bogged down like many apps, but responds quickly. As you type in a word, it offers suggestions of all words that could begin with what is typed in so far. I use it almost daily, and would recommend it to anyone.

Update made it worse.. Look up a word, and easily switch back and forth between dictionary and thesaurus while on that word. Now? That feature is gone. Now you must look up a word in either dictionary or thesaurus, and in order to change, you must re-enter the word in the desired function. Why? What was the point of this backward change? Who there thought it was a good idea to eliminate this useful feature?

Perfect combination. This dictionary provides just the right amount of detail to make it quick to use while still providing enough information for a clear understanding of the word being defined. The ease of use, the layout and the many included features are also outstanding. I particularly like being able to hear a clear pronunciation of the words I’m looking up. Well done - this dictionary really works for me.

I’m telling you it’s MONEY 💰. I use this paid app constantly. You guys, the only way to make your way up in the world, is to learn. I cannot learn, if I cannot understand the meaning of words. Chicks dig guys who are smart. Well, now that I think of it… only a mouth breathing Neanderthal would refer to ladies as “chicks”. It’s disrespectful. If I used the word chick in a meeting with my boss Karen, at SpaceX? ( which I did ), I would be summarily fired. ( which I was ) It’s now 1:58 a.m. and I cannot sleep. I woke up a few minutes ago and had to look up Neanderthal in this application. I was referred to as a mouth breathing Neanderthal when I was fired. I am determined not to make a mistake like that again. I have found peace in the Merriam-Webster dictionary app on my iPhone. I suggest you do the same, gentlemen.

Fine Tune Your Vocabulary on the Fly. Merriam-Webster Dictionary Pro (aka ‘premium’) is well worth the price. You pay once and own it without needing to subcribe unless you prefer that option. Webster and its competitor Oxford, have been my standards for looking up definitions since the 1950s and 60s respectively. I inherited and still own my father’s massive Webster dictionary, now an antiquarian book that I still occasionally use. Having Merriam-Webster Dictionary Pro on my iPhone is a priceless convenience especially when I’m reading or writing, which is what I do many hours daily. I would like to see the app adding dark screen mode capability for night time reading because it helps prevent insomnia for incessantly reading nerds like myself.

A magnificent and splendiferous App. Refined and better than ever before. Exquisite and elegant. Recherché. By far my favorite dictionary app and trust me I’ve had quite a few little ole son. Let’s cut to the chase, I’m a been there done that kind of guy. I like things that work. Practicality is my middle name, actually my middle name is Savvy, and this app is all of that. You get a word every day (pretty gosh darn neat) and word games. That’s right kids they have games. Come one come all!!

I’d like better access to the word of the day archives. I had been using the Merriam Webster website for a long time, but finally decided to switch to the app since it is easier to use from my phone. I would absolutely love it and would give it a 5 star review if it made accessing the word of the day archives a little easier. I can’t find an easy way to search them. I miss having the link right there when I look a word up in the dictionary (if there is one) like it is on the webpage.

Over joyed and blessed to have access. As a young person who had fallen on hard times and during the pinnacle of my frustration to spend the money on this app was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It’s has helped me discover and understand more than I can explain; both in the books I explore and on my own life’s path. Thank you to everyone for all the work put forth to bring us this tool!!

Amazing App with a Terrible Bug. Let me start by saying that I love this resource. I use it every single day, without fail. But I cannot give it the rating it deserves until they fix the log out bug. It is so frustrating to be entirely unable to log in because the app immediately logs you back out no matter what you do. I use this app to save words I actively need to remember for my career, and not being able to access my account’s saved words necessitates a 1 star review until they correct this issue. I will happily change my review once the bug is fixed.

From China to the USA. Learning English can be fun. MW is always my choice of dictionary when it comes to English learning because it grants me a convenient and reliable way to study the etymology behind very words and link them when I spot a sense of similarity. Every words can be clicked and accessed with MW which is also a great way to encounter new words and memorize them. It got me this far, so I plan to stick with it in the future.

Dictionary rewrites. I’m writing again to say I’m sorry. I didn’t do my due diligence before I fired off my last review. I looked up the definition of a woman & it hasn’t changed. The one time I didn’t ‘look before I leaped’ with my reviews & I made a colossal mistake. Please forgive me for my ignorance. I gave you the 5 star ⭐️ review you deserve. Again, I’m sorry.

Great app. I use this app all the time. great app works all the time. Voice feature is great but picks up to much background noise and doesn’t recognize when you are done speaking your word. I use it from other apps like messenger when I can get the spelling correct. You can even cut and paste. Word of the day is interesting and includes some history of a word. All around worth the money. If you are like me you will use it every day. Very happy

Love this app!. I've become obsessed with grammar and the free online thesaurus and wanted an app. I literally have never spent money on an app in my life, but with all the excellent reviews, I thought "what the hell"! Love it! The only thing I want to request is to have a notification each day for the word of the day. I forget to check sometimes and love notifications. Just like Star Chart. Thanks!

An absolutely necessity!. An absolutely necessary app for anyone who writes anything, from emails to screenplays! C'mon, this is THE Webinar's dictionary on your phone! Webster's has always been my goto dictionary since college, and the online version seems just as good. I remember always having to lug that thick bright red book around my dorm, and what a joy it is to have on my iPhone. I hate to sound like my parents, but kids today have it so much easier! Geesh!

Ad free version is good. There ain’t no free lunch in this world, as such, the free version that exploits its users as commodity data rather than human beings entitled to privacy, is tedious and annoying but when you stop being a cheapskate and pay a few bucks for a quality product, as is ethically reasonable, it’s a great product of high very value and easily in my top 3 or 5 apps in terms of the frequency with which it is used. (Not sure that was grammatically sound but I’m tired and I trust you get the gist.)

Great app. This is a first rate dictionary app. The only thing I wish it would do is to help with spelling. I am a very poor speller who tends to try for a sesquipedalian vocabulary, thus many of the words I want to use are not familiar to me as far as their spelling is concerned. With this app, even if you get one letter off, the app simply says ‘no word found’ without offering any suggestions with the correct spelling.

Verbose. I have a plethera of words at my finger tips, and I love it. I have a hardbound version as well that ive used until the cover is worn off and I have made notes, underlined and highlighted throughout. I am still getting use to all the features within. There is nothing quite refreshing as a delectable use of words as long as one does not become verbose. 😄
