Star Tribune Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Good app if using basic features. Solid app if you just need to read the articles. Fairly clear and ability to change font sizes and navigate, or swipe through stories. No ability to rotate or enlarge pictures, and non-standard articles take a looooong time to load.

Frustrating. When I open the Strib it tells me to UPDATE. After hitting the green update sign I am taken to the App Store. There is not an option there to “update” only to “open”. This App has worked for me for years until recently, giving me references to “uodate”. I did perform an update the first time, I have even removed the App and reinstalled. What is the problem?

My daily emails don’t work together with the app at all. I receive my daily emails see a story I want to read and it opens the app and asks me to sign in. When I do it takes me not to the story I clicked on but to the main page then I have to go searching for the story. Two things: 1. Why aren’t the app, emails and social media connected re keeping track of the story I clicked on? and 2. Why does accessing the app from the email and social media require me to sign in every time. When I use just the app I remain signed in indefinitely. Both of these issues are resolvable my New York Times app coordinates with both the emails and also thru clicking on links in social media. This issue is so frustrating that I’m thinking seriously about dropping my subscription entirely. Please fix this and catch up to the rest of the publishing industry in using tech to encourage readership rather than driving us away.

Lousy app that misses the basics. If you just want to read the top stories it is passable. But the search function is useless - shows you stories from 12 months ago but not the one you read last week and want to find. The comment sections are a cesspool of conservative hate and they are happy to monetize the engagement.

This app needs work. The front page often lists the same article more than once and has old articles taking up valuable space. I would also like the option to turn off sections I’m not interested in and an easier way to access the sections I am interested in. I also subscribe to the NYT and find it easier to navigate through their sections. They also keep the front page up to date without duplication.

No Subscription Required. PSA - you can download the Star Trib app and read articles without paying for a subscription. Pretty neat (I pay anyway). My only complaint is that there is no “save article” or reading list function. Please add that soon!!

If you’re 👀for something that can be made easier. This is the only one that has it all in one place so it’s more than just another app to get ya started with ya morning routine and get your coffee ready to drink it up for all your days activities!🐾🛵🪰🕷️🧵👠🌎👩‍👩‍👦🚌🐣🏍️🎸

Working really well now. Strib has really improved the app since the last time I rated it one star for crashing all the time. Great way to stay on top of what’s happening in Minnesota.

Crash crash crash. If the app could keep working and not freeze, crash, or jump loop you to other articles or adds maybe it would be wo th using. Been using for about a 2 months and the style to read an article is real. There are crashes regularly that cause one to be booted from app. Time will tell if I renew digital subscription, but between the crashing and constant updates it is not looking good.

Horrible Search Function. The search function is essentially useless. I can type in all the necessary keywords and still not find the article I was looking for. It doesn’t let you sort by date or relevance. It needs filters and a more advanced way to search. I also don’t like how I can’t go from the browser to the app seamlessly. If you want to read the most recent stories, then it’s fine. But it’s not useful beyond that.

Better but still hangs. Some articles take too long to load their web version. Sometimes it makes you login again to read articles, despite having already logged into the App

Shockingly substandard. I’ve had this app for years and it’s most obvious issues have never been addressed, which I find hard to believe. Either the app developers do not use their own app, or Strib does not care that the app just doesn’t work. The pervasive issues I see all the time: - frequent crashing or closing when accessing certain sections from the sidebar - stories do not match what is on the website or physical newspaper for the day (this makes no sense) - app does not open if you click a strib link in the web browser, requiring you to search for an article you want to read within the app if you see it linked or referenced elsewhere online. - the search feature is laughable. Search hits are almost always several years old and not relevant. Sometimes the search will not hit even when you copy the headline of the article you want to read into the search bar. For what they charge to use this app- especially since their print service delivery is spotty at best - it is shocking how bad it is. It’s almost like they don’t want you to read their content. This makes it really hard for me to want to support local news.

Good but biased. They cover the news quite well but they are editorially biased. For example, on the 2040 plan they express concern but support for a plan that virtually eliminates the ability of families to provide a confident home environment in which to raise your family. Families take a back seat to singles and couples which reflects the make up of the city council.

What is it with news apps?. Hey how about when I click on the alert of a story, it goes to that story? Here’s another pie in the sky idea: a search bar that works??? Any search of a current story brings up old unrelated news from 2021. Is it just that the people at the top are old and don’t know how tech works? Whatever it is the UI of strib app is not great and that’s not news

Type too large. For accessibility, this app FAILS. Since the 3.0 revision introduced one month ago, I can no longer use voiceover to read articles on my iPad. I contacted your tech department three weeks ago about this. Now I see there have been two revisions since then and this issue has not been addressed though I was told it would be. I’m canceling my subscription. Update: The Mac accessibility function voiceover is working again. This is so essential for those of us in the vision loss community. How much appreciated.

Great free news source. So great that the Strib has been able to keep so much content available without a paywall. I’m a 365 day a year subscriber and have been since my freshman year in college 45+ years ago, but still nice to hop on line for current updates.

Best Improvement Ever - Star Tribune. I just love the new Star Tribune format on my phone. It is easy to use, nicely formatted with a perfect font for reading and colorful. Thank-you for the offer and improvements. Kim Blievernicht

Ray Johnson s Thoughts. I’m almost 92 years young and have never forgotten the days when I had a paper route delivering the Star Tribune. That’s about 80 years ago. Now I read the obituaries to see who’s passed. I read them on my I phone because we live out of town, but they cut me off and try to sell me a subscription Sad Story

Clunky!. This app is extremely slow and clunky on both my iPhone and iPad. Terrible. And the content does not change much from day to day. I see the same stories for days at a time in many cases. Only minor updates daily. You’re charging us for this content, so update it daily at least! Does the paper version print the same content each day?I doubt it. Rip off!

App is so much worse than it could be. The strib app crashes a lot. It’s often very slow to load pages or to scroll smoothly. It somehow burns through my phone’s battery unlike other apps. And if you ever try using this app to search for an article - even if you search for the EXACT title - the search results never (and I mean NEVER) show what you’re looking for. The only reason I keep subscribing to this app is because I believe it’s vital to support local newspapers.

Long time subscriber. Sometimes difficult to load. I find it irritating that the same stories are featured two or three or four times through the daily feed. Also, do you only have one person on agriculture stories? Some of those items are a month old!

Repeat articles day after day. Wish it more directly matched the online e-edition, which is hard to read on an iPhone. On the app, one sees sees the same articles over and over for days. Click on an article and see similar articles in the feed as main screen. Why?? I Use only for quick reviews.

Overall ok but needs improvement. It works fine and with some work you can get the articles you need. But I’d prefer a couple features. First, there is some content I really don’t need. I’d like to pick the sections it draws from. I either need to go to each section one at a time (local, sports, national, etc.) or scroll past a lot of content I don’t care about especially when content keeps repeating. I’d also like to see a section based on date order or since last time I viewed content. I have to keep scrolling past already seen content as I scan for articles of interest.

Trib app. Can’t complain too much, but this is what I could say. It can be glichy and I’m not crazy about the pop up ad that each article that you click on has happen, but oh well, like you’re going to eliminate them because I don’t like them! You’re in the business to make money.

87. In my advanced years I have developed some vision problems. I am unable to read the physical newspaper but with the ease of using the online app, I can fully enjoy reading my Star Tribune.

Feedback. There are times when the article does not match the headline. The repeat of articles while scrolling is confounding. Makes one think they’re not using the app properly.

Frustrating way to start my day.. I love being able to read the Strib on my iPad, especially as a Florida snowbird. What I don’t love is the slow, buggy app. It freezes up a lot and I need to restart it. I never get to reading it all because run out of patience and time. I’ve never experienced an app this bad before. Please fix it!

Well designed for easy viewing. I think the star tribune app for the easy reading, scrolling design. Just enough bold text and smaller print.

Limited. Lacks save-as-favorite/ read-later option. Lacks link to customer service (for when your Sunday paper's not delivered). Not synced well to what’s in the paper; hard to find stories and photos. Even after some enhancements, still not up to the Strib's usual high standards.

Marvelous News Paper:). Imm grateful to be updated on the local mews of what is happening in the whole Twin Cities and beyond. Thank you for keeping me well informed and updated to the latest in depth story.

Still clunky after all these years. I enjoy the Strib- the content is good- but unfortunately this is a clunky app that doesn’t do the paper justice. For many years now, the app has had severe operational issues, and it still does. Often you’ll tap on a headline and the story won’t load- you just get the wheel of death. The same thing often happens when you want to read subscriber comments. Apparently they’re not planning to remedy these issues….

Great App. The Star Tribune app gives me all of the information that I need from News to Sports to Weather and everything in between. There are many features that you can read about the Twin Cities. The content is always up-to-date and accurate.

Reliable, easy to access news. The app makes it easy to find local news in an organized place. Better experience than navigating the internet to the website.

Repeating repeat news not news. As I scroll through the headlines at some point I realize I am reading the same headlines repeatedly. Unlike the actual news paper where you only read a story once. I guess it is like my Navy training for giving live briefings. “ You tell them what you are going to tell them, then you tell them, then you tell them what you told them.”

Star trib. Start my day with this paper and love it. As a boy I even delivered it (actually the star edition)! Star trib is an iconic “newspaper” that I trust will outlive me. I truly hope the staff there feel pride and ownership of their work and their vital American responsibility. Democracy lives through the free press.

Out of sync with iOS updates. Apple recently released an iOS update. The developers at the Strib weren’t able to keep up though I’m assuming they have had plenty of warning. The app stopped working completely. The Strib had to print a news article instructing subscribers to delete the app & re-download from the App Store to get it working again. That worked for a couple days. Now the new app is exhibiting similar behavior as the old one. Get it together Strib. Also the comment section scroll speed is too slow. Why can’t comments be native to the app?

Enjoy the regional coverage. I appreciate the coverage of outstate communities. I also like reading the new articles as they are added throughout the day, rather than waiting till morning to read all the news.

Generally works, but occasionally freezes up. I use this app every day, and in general, it works pretty well. Some of the irritating features are the stupid blinking ads everywhere. For an older person like myself, who has multiple “floaters” in my aging eyes, it not only is annoying, but it makes me dizzy enough to have to walk away. Enough already! Another annoyance is during reading of the comments of any article…if you want to “read more of this conversation,” clicking that will do so, but then exiting will put you back to the very beginning! This is dumb because I may have already read through several hundred comments! I do not feel like scrolling through all of them again, so I usually just switch to a new article to read.

Star Tribune review. Have always loved reading your paper. I am sad of the smaller paper and fewer reporters as you have always had outstanding reporting . I also want to say that I’ve appreciated the person on your staff who double checks the spelling- after the Spellcheck automated system. Sentence structure matters to the intent of the message and STrib has always seemed to be really so aware about that. My mother was a schoolteacher and she was picky picky picky about spelling, grammar, and sentence structure. I like reading billboards, roadside signs of one kind or another. Looking for some ‘Oops’ in the sign about those English topics I mentioned. So thanks for your attention to these things. They matter. I have a 88 yr old friend. I gift her a daily and Sunday paper for her birthday, Christmas and other holidays. She tells me it’s a highlight of her day to make a cup of coffee, sit down and read your paper. And she thinks of me everyday. So thanks for all you do for us who love the Star Tribune. Keep it up. We’ll keep reading…

Love the Star Tribune. I read the eEdition every day. Maybe it having grownup with a printed newspaper that has influenced the way I get news. I appreciate the layout of a real newspaper. A front page with headlines of what’s most important happening in the world, state, city or neighborhood. Not the same old rabbit hole feeds from so many online services. I’m always shocked by how uninformed my adult children are concerning news. I read the Star Tribune cover to cover and don’t need any other news. If you live in Minnesota it is an essential app and subscription. Paul, Minneapolis

A slice of home. I may live in Los Angeles. But my subscription to the Star Tribune app allows me to keep up on what’s going on in my hometown of Minneapolis. It also keeps me up a news that might affect my adult kids and my grandson who still live in the Twin Cities.

Highly readable. This is one of the cleanest and most readable newspaper websites, and the app makes a seamless interface. I don’t always agree with the Strib’s editorial stance and choices about how to cover local stories, but they’re the newspaper of record in the Twin Cities, and an important voice.

Top notch local reporting and a well-designed app. The app works well. The news coverage is extensive, including the less populated areas of Minnesota. Coverage is largely unbiased and just puts the facts down in black and white without spin. My go-to news source.

Great way to access comprehensive news in the Twin Cities. I use this app multiple times per day to stay informed about our community. I love the comprehensive coverage of everything from city government to the food scene.

Easy to use. I like the choice of a facsimile of the current paper OR scrolling through articles. Some online papers don’t give this choice. I’m new to Minnesota and started subscribing before I moved. Good choice. Live Minnesota and I enjoy the Strib.

Family. Our eldest son works for the paper, and his family live in the MSP area. I use my subscription to keep up with MSP area news and to get a perspective on national and international news that I do not get from either The NY Times or The Washington Post.

Home Grown. Growing up in the 60’s is all we had to read and, even signing up as well as delivering it to to my neighbors. #1 in the country. While in the military for my career I still read that paper and now on the app. I read it every day on the app because I do not live in Minneapolis anymore. Can’t say enough about the Star and Tribune. It’s my go to for my Hometown news!!

Love the Strib. I love the Paper because the news is timely, the reporting feels even handed, with right mix of local, national, and international flavor, AND I can read it the way and when I want to, given my busy schedule. Online has options to feel like I am reading my old school newspaper at the kitchen table, or I can just focus on what I want on the website for a quick hit of what’s currently on the front burner… Personal notifications, make it hard for me to miss the news that matters most to me, chosen by the best curator, you guessed it, Me!😉😎

Have had it... Cancelled my e-subscription for the second time for the same reason. The app, as downloaded, does not allow me to log on. I go to the Strib website and log on thru Safari with no problem. Since I prefer the virtual print edition, I try to transfer to that site. It asks me to log in again. This worked for about a year, then recently my log in attempt was rejected. I read several e-editions, including the New York Time, daily. Switching between formats, using the crosswords, Worde, etc. absolutely no problem. Problems with IPad logins appear to be endemic with your app, judging by the comments. I think it’s time you switched out your developers.

Great Content& Great App Experience. This is the first app I open in the morning and then throughout the day to keep up to date on the news in my state and to follow my favorite sports teams. The Start Tribune is the gold standard for news reporting on Minnesota and the app itself is superbly designed for a great experience on mobile and tablet alike.

Love it!. No matter the weather I can count on reading my Strib when I wake up!

Best news coverage in Luverne Minnesota. Not able to got out for my favorite Sunday edition but due from the Magic of technology, I can read this from home. Yeaaaa

Link problems. Even with a subscription, some links, especially those that must download, don’t always work. Please try to improve this.

Banner Ads, Bugs. The new version includes frequent interruptions with layover banner ads that you have to manually dismiss, whether you’re a subscriber or not. The app often crashes.

Convenient and functional. Gets me to the articles I want to see and presents them n a reader-friendly way

Great Newspaper—Terrible App. The Star Tribune has been one of America’s great newspapers for decades. Excellent writing. And integrity on reporting… something that’s sorely missed in much of today’s media. But this app is junk. On about half the stories it links to pages that look to be taking you to a generic web browser. And—about half of those—require you to log in again… even though you’re already in the app. And—once you click to log in….. nothing. I’ve written to them and basically, they refuse to fix it. The STrib is a great paper. Skip this app, buy a subscription to the e-edition and read it in your browser.

The App. Paper kept cutting out a lot so then I removed the app and then it didn’t seem like I could get the app back on my page. Very frustrating. Seems like it all started after I tried to send an article to a friend.

So-so. My primary complaint is photo images can’t be enlarged on my phone. I have noticed that the mobile version is a bit quicker to load than it used to be, so that’s good

Crashes a lot and won’t let you access all of articles that I’ve paid for. Too many pop ups for paid subscribers.

StarTribune. I’m not a writer. I enjoy reading the StarTribune on line each day with my morning coffee. It’s one of my simple joys. Thanks to all that make that possible. Carole

Stuck. Something has changed. I used to be able to log in and place a vacation hold in a few clicks. Now, it continually asks me to re-log in, then gets stuck with a blank screen. I reported this a month or so ago, the last time we were going out of town, and asked to have the paper stopped for a few days. Nobody ever even responded and the papers piled up, making it obvious we weren’t home. The site it flawed and there appears to be no customer service support.

Too many Repeated articles.. Too many repeated articles, why does the Strib always have to repeat every article 3-4 times?

Easy to read. Easy to see the headlines, read the articles and save ones for later reading.

Glitchy. Week 2 of crashing…have updated app when instructed by Star Tribune but now a second weekend of snafus. Dare we hope for a credit on our account? Nahhhh

Great hometown newspaper!. I’ve been a subscriber since 1972 and we really enjoy keeping up with hometown news online while we winter in Arizona.

Janky. Buggy, certain functions consistently do not work properly such as video (audio) and comments section loading.

Timely and well written. Nice to keep up with current and timely events that occurring not only in the metro are but outstate as well.

Buggy. This app stinks! Bugs are not fixed - even with update. Inconsistent service, awkward structure, consistently mis-matched photos to stories, and confusing timing for release between app and print. This app is nowhere near the quality of leading news sources like NYT and WSJ. As well, the content is typically shallow and heavily biased. If I didn’t want to follow local sports, I’d certainly cancel.

Tired of the push to pay for content. I downloaded your app, I get exposed to the ads on it, and I’m only able to view a couple of articles per week… Which is counterproductive to your efforts, because I’m not using the app as often anymore (in favor of other news outlets), and as a result, your advertisers aren’t getting my eyeballs.

Concise and relevant. Quick way to check out local events and news.

Great app. The ST mobile app is easy to navigate, reliable, and includes a few custom options including dark mode

Disappointed. As a longtime subscriber, I thought the app would be a quick way to stay informed. While some of the articles are current, there are many that are repeated and some that remain on the site for several days. I don’t feel that much attention is given to the app.

Still weak app. It’s disorganized and slow to navigate. I’m always logging back on. Has disturbing pop over screen even for subscribers. You have to really want this and it will skip some sections in the online version

Search Features Are Bad. Please make it so when I search the title of an article that actual article comes up in the search results. Also would love for your Instagram and Facebook to link to your app so I don’t have to face a paywall and then use the problematic search feature in the app to try to find that article.

Excellent Newspaper 👍👏. I have always enjoyed reading the Minneapolis news for many years with great journalism. Thank you..

Lousy app, difficult to use. Could really use an upgrade. The search feature is useless, it will pull up a lot of unrelated articles. Clicking on an article doesn’t mean that is the article that will come up, it can often be a random article. I end reading the replica edition instead of the app.

Good app. Easy to use. Nice to be able to follow home town stories while away.

Every Day. Every day I get a new chapter in the book of living together on the earth, close to home and far away.

Not so good. On my iPad it quits as soon as I scroll down when in portrait mode and quits at the first article of the local section in landscape mode. This just began today. It has been fine for many years before. I downloaded the app to my iPhone and logged in. All I get is a blank page. Maybe it’s a snowman in a snowstorm!

Poor journalism. We cancelled our subscription because the paper primarily uses NYT and AP content which we already receive. Very little local content worth reading that is not available from MNpost. Editorial page is primarily a DFL opinion page with no right wing balance. Reading NYT and WSJ everyday provides opinion balance. Strip is just thin and poor quality journalism.

I use it daily. I love the Star Tribune, and although I get the full digital issue, I like the app for push notifications and breaking news.

Easy to use. Star Tribune online is easy to use. If you want newspaper look use e-edition. For those of us delayed daily delivery, this fulfills our needs.

Handy news. I love reading all the headlines on this app every morning, and have it on my phone and iPad.

Great access. I enjoy the digital edition of the Trib. The app lets me search and scroll. Not like holding the morning paper in my hands, but close!

I value high quality local journalism. We are fortunate to have professional journalism alive and well in our state. It’s critical for a healthy democracy. The STRIB does a good job.

Dark mode needs work. The charts and graphs featured in articles on occasion are not readable and I need to switch my app settings back to light mode to take in this information. Otherwise, the app works pretty well!

Poor buggy app. Very poor resonse / navigation - even with excellent web connection. Very frustrating when home page will not open, stuttering when navigating between pages/articles. Individual stories load very slowly, sometimes freezing.

Local news and more. Good fairly balanced and important local news coverage.

Love the paper, but…. Please please please make the app capable of zooming pictures. The app is for a phone-size screen, so expanding pictures is crucial for readers. Maybe it’s costly to do so. Not sure why it’s taking this long for this improvement. Thanks.

Never can load comments. I subscribe only to the digital version. The comments are a unique feature of the digital version. Or would be. But the never load. Very frustrating. Please have your tech people look into why the comments don’t load on an updated iPad.

Notifications. Love getting relevant timely updates on what’s happening!

Really well organized, feels like reading the paper. The app is very well organized, it is a simple app but I haven’t had it fail me yet

Always reliable!!. Best electronic paper in the country. It’s always on my phone each morning at 5:04 and it doesn’t matter what city I’m in. A true bargain.

A comprehensive voice of reason.. Always dependable to focus on what makes Minnesota a desirable place to live and raise children.

StarTribune. The latest changes are a pain. Many articles say I need to login when I’m already logged in as well as making comments and liking others comments. Whatever they did, even navigating is horrible.

Star tribune. Easy to use. I resisted reading newspapers on line but since StPPPress has dropped delivery to us, I chose the reasonable price of the star tribune. Much more to the daily paper than Pioneer Press has.

What I don’t like. I hate when I click on an article and it goes to some kind of white background and takes forever and a day to load up

👌. Quick and easy, minimum ads

Good reporting/ clunky app. Journalism and reporting great but app is clunky and frustrating to use, especially on phone. Too many longer/bigger stories have to load specially. Really good news apps like NYT don’t have this problem.

Not great. All of links that go to website require you to sign in - even though you have a subscription … Many of the articles show the wrong picture- it’s weird.
