How It Works: digital edition Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

It's great. You think it's going to be free! What the hell is wrong with you dicks giving it one star just cause you guys don't wanna spend a little cash! It actually really good if you TRY it.

Bait and Switch - they're just lying about "free". I have no problem with companies wanting money for their product. I DO have problems with lying in their labeling. They are clearly labeled "Free" (right next to others that really ARE free), but once you install the app, you find that ALL their content must be paid-for as in-app purchases. Sorry, that's just lying on the face of it. On principle alone I will never purchase their content. Get some ethics, there, Imagine Publishing.

Deceptive & insulting ad. The ad clearly implies that the magazine is free but that back issues are only available for a fee. That's false. After downloading the app you find that nothing is provided free. They clearly miss the point that even providing a single issue, or one article, could give a person some basis on which to buy. There is no reason to download this free app unless you have already decided to buy an overpriced subscription.

Good App Great Magazine. This app works great. All the people giving bad reviews.. Read the description before you "waste your time downloading it." Really? It's free because these folks don't want to charge us for an app that lets us buy their magazines and/or subscriptions. How can they give away magazines for free? What's wrong with you guys? This app is for people that don't want to go to the bookstore to buy an issue bc it's easier to have on ur idevice. Get real people. Use ur brain b4 you give a great thing a bad reputation. By the way.. I don't in anyway whatsoever work for this company, I am just annoyed by stupid people.

I would have spent my money. So it's a free app, but as I saw it has the little "+" at the top of download so I knew it would probably cost to get magazines, which is reasonable. But, not a single sample at all, all between 3 and up to 14! dollars for a digital copy. A bit much and considering they don't bother even throwing in a few pages even from an old magazine for a sample is enough for me to delete the app.

No teaser!?!. The application to get the magazines is free and the people that are dumb enough to pay for subscriptions on accident or that expect to have full subscriptions for free should not be rating apps! The interface is very attractive. BUT, I would have liked to see a teaser. Half of an issue or something would make the download more worth it. I just wanted a peak and didn't get one.

Quality information. This app is really great and I usually never write reviews because it's a waste of time. I'm writing this because the other negative reviews probably stop people from learning and that's not cool. It cost 3 bucks a month for a 75pg informative piece of literature. You spend more on lunch in one day.. You can actually learn something informative in this rather than your little Debbie cakes.

We should all be so lucky to be jeffry st. Claire. First of all the newsstand store states free. As for the general public not gifted with little jeffries superior brain capacity, I completely agree that this is a classic case of false advertising not to the fault of the misrepresentation of apple as to the agreement of the magazine. Ironically it has soured me from ever subscribing to this magazine because of the shannannagins obviously practiced by the online carrier. By reading the reviews I see I'm not the only one. Wish I would have read them before. Would have saved a bunch of time. NOTHING IS FREE, THIS IS A WAIST OF TIME AND jeffry IS AN IDIOT.

Stop negativity. You people need to stop with all the negative reviews. All newsstand apps are FREE to download. That's why it's free. It's the same as an actual newsstand in person. You didn't pay for it to be there. But you can just take a newspaper or magazine for free!! Same concept here people. Give credit where it's due. I haven't had any issues with the app.

Bad Marketing. For all of those that would say, "this is a great magazine and how can you expect something for nothing?" I say, "Because they said so." In legal terms this is called Bait and Switch. They should give at least one sample to shut up the crowd. There is no excuse for greed. It is the principle of the thing that makes me not want to pay even though I can afford it. All they did here, is get themselves a bad rating and lose potential subscriptions from people that would have purchased if they didn't feel they were hood winked. Insulting our intelligence, you 5 star raters, is not a smart move and doesn't help the company at all. How do we know you weren't paid to say its great? Obviously the company will do anything to make a buck so we can only assume those that rated it with 5 stars are on the take.

Don't Assume. Very simple people, the app is free the subscription is not. All you have to do is read the description FIRST before seeing the word "free" and scrambling as fast as you can to download it. No deceit, or hoodwinking involved, it's VERY CLEAR in the description what the cost is.

Really stupid. Just scan the contents of a traditional magazine and put it on the iPhone? When will these drones get it? The paper format is dead. Rewrite your magazine as an interactive iOS app. No one wants to read a sprawling magazine on a tiny screen. That might work for the iPad 3, but not the iPhone or iPad 2, not enough resolution.

Love it. It really makes me wonder how stupid people are. The app is free but you right you have to pay for the subscription. Why would you expect a company to give you a free magazine? Learn to read it says in app purchase. Really people all of you that expect this to be free you are as stupid as box or rocks.

Not for iPhone. First of all, this app is nothing more than a portal to buy issues of the magazine, just like every other Newsstand app, so get over the "This isn't free!" hissy fits. Nowhere in the description does it mention anything about free content. My issue is that the magazine looks horrible on the iPhone. I'm sure it's gorgeous on the iPad, but the graphics are too compacted on the little iPhone screen. Also, how does the Pixelmags web reader work?

Yes there really are free magazines .... Just not here! To all the people (possibly apple staff) who say any one who thought this was free is stupid or a 4 year old monkey(that might have been clever if it wasn't wrong). I receive a free e-magazine every month. If I want a hard copy I have to pay for it. (yes they do exist.) That settled, another point--- if I go to a newsstand or bookstore I can and have previewed and read a sample article or chapter in a book before my purchase; and if I couldn't, I wouldn't. So with this app I will not. That is reality! You know the stuff that dosen't happen on a screen.

It's exactly what I expected. I read on here that a lot of people are upset that they have to pay for a subscription "but the app was supposed to be free!" Yeah, the app is free. The subscription isn't. No where on the internet are these kinds of magazines simply free. They all charge a subscription fee. If you go this way you're actually getting a great deal compared to the 10 bucks an issue on the stand.

Newsstand, How It Works. I'm only writing this review in response to the idiotic 1-star review below. Magazines are on the iPad. Like their printed counterpart, they require money to either purchase 1 issue. Or offer "Subscriptions" that save loyal readers money. The "free" aspect of this service is allowing you to view which magazines are available for download. Or experience a demonstration of the magazine before you spend time and money on it. This is not deceitful. How It Works is a cool magazine and isa good port to a new medium. In the future, keep the reviews about the specific product, not the service that manages that product.

Four stars only for the paper magazine, and this app I can only give one star. How It Works is my favorite magazine for curious mind but it is very difficult to purchase its paper version in China and that is why I downloaded this app and subscribed for digital books. However, the experience for this app is too terrible that I cannot access the store anymore after I successfully subscribed. This magazine is fantastic and in order to enjoy it on iOS I sincerely hope you guys can improve this app.

Best magazine, but poorly presented on ios. I have to say this best magazine to read for curious mind. Got recommendation from friend, been buying paper copy from bookstore since then. But, my only complain is that it is not friendly to read on here, its basically presented as picture or images of text paper which is hard to read. This is are text, should not presented as images. I hope you know what i mean. I have economic magine subscripion, you can read text clearly, scroll down text, change font just like any text on pc. But this magazines just present there stuff as images, i suppose that fine read non pc or tablet, not smartphone.

2 funny. Y'all just can't deal with the fact you have to come out of your pocket for a year subscription. Get over yourself and pay for the info. Folks ALWAYS want something FREE. Will u go into a store.... Grab a magazine off the rack then walk out NO. If you do then SOMEBODY going to JAIL! LMBO!

A Wonderful resource. To those who want something for nothing please read carefully. The app IS FREE, the magazines you must buy. Simple. The magazine is a great resource. Lots of information every month. Think of it as BRAIN CANDY and just enjoy the wonderful insights that you will be provided . Please continue the good work.

No retina support, bad reading experience. This is the first item I ever requested a refund for (the subscription fee). I use Zinio and like that, so when this appeared in the Newsstand, it looked cool, so I got the 6 month subscription. That was a serious mistake. The magazine content is not optimized for the retina display, so the text and graphics are jagged when viewed close up. Next, the tap-to-zoom features don't work properly as on other apps. If you double tap to zoom in, it doesn't intelligently fit the area you are zooming in on to the display. Instead you get an arbitrarily large zoomed area that will only let you see part of what you zoomed in on. Further, there is no article text view mode like you get with Zinio. You have to try to read the articles while zoomed in with jagged text. It is like someone took a low-res screen shot of each page and you're trying to read the magazine while only being able to see small bits of what you are trying to read. Zinio lets you pull up and read an entire article using real text (think ePub) or you can read the article as originally laid out by the publisher. Stay away from this app until they fix these problems.

Total tricks on consumers. Is it really free? If it said there was, "app purchase"; (NOT small print if it even says it at all).I might be inclined to purchase the virtual magazines/news papers with the money I DO have. But unfortunately I feel: tricked, taken advantage of and/or lied to because I waisted time downloading the app only to be disappoint due to the fact it was not free at all. It is not the fact that it's not free, rather the fact be that it said "free" there for I get my hopes up and become disappointed. I may sound really critical, I am, but its not because I'm selfish it's because this it's not right look at all the other pour reviews

Haha. I have to agree. Guys...obviously they aren't going to be giving out free magazines. Use your common sense when downloading it. If you thought it was free, get a reality check. Other than that, the magazine is great! It even says the subscription fees in the description.

Excellent Magazine!. I didn't know this magazine existed until finding it here in Newsstand. I purchased one issue to try it out and was hooked from there! I find it funny that people will negatively rate the app as a consequence of their own fault for not reading the terms. The app is free to search their magazine database, it states very clearly that past and current issues are available for PURCHASE within the app. Nowhere it states that you get the magazine for free. Idiots.

Free is normal. I saw all these bad reviews because the magazine issues aren't free. But no magazines are on here. Some give a sample, but it seems they have chosen to select the magazine you are interested in, and you can preview every page! At first I was disappointed, but then I realized its kind of nice even though it's a smaller scale. So you be the judge if you like the issue, just like flipping through pages in the store before you buy.

What is wrong with you people?. I'm confused as to why people are giving this magazine a bad review if they didn't even read it. You couldn't have actually thought itd be free?? How much time did you really waste downloading this app? App is great and these people are silly. Highly recommend. It's great - not piling up magazines, info is good. These subscriptions are really good for the iPad - don't have to zoom =] Don't listen to the bad reviews! These people don't know what they're talking about. Act like they got jipped =p so silly

Total BS. The description is written so that you think you can see this months issue for free. Then if you like it, past and future issues are available at a fee. That is reasonable. However this is not the case. You still have to pay the $4 to see the current issue. No chance to see quality. No thanks. I will stick with Zinio. I was really hoping Apple/publishers would get it right. I like the look of iBooks and newsstand compared to Zinio, but Zinio has the content and you can see a sample.

Nothing in life is free.. It's hard to get a good idea of the good apps and bad when the only criteria that you people put on apps is if it's free or not. It's a magazine it's gonna cost something. And why does the digital have to cost less. It takes more work putting together an interactive digital mag than one set for print. I want to look at reviews and get an idea about the content and usability of an app not that everyone is so broke they can't afford a 3 dollar magazine.

Crash is gone but restore purchases and subscription doesn't work. I don't understand all these negative reviews about being misleading that it's not free. Of course it's not free crazy people. It works just like all the other newsstand apps. You buy in app magazines. Charging for the app would be like saying that you have to pay for the newsstand on the street corner before you can buy a newspaper. The container is free. The content is not. Anyway....on to my bug. The latest update fixes the crash on load but Restore Purchases and Restore Subscription doesn't work until you shutdown the app completely and restart it. I'm on latest iOS with iPad 2.

Content Great, Reader terrible. Let me start by saying, "love this magazine and it's content." Having said that the reader is terrible. Would like to see it set up like Popular Science and so many other magazines I have, so that there is no zooming to read text and no need to scroll around the page to see pictures.

Listen. Do you expect a company to give expensive magazines for free? With this you buy the magazine, if they made you pay for the magazine market you would be even madder! So, if you're interested in a good magazine get this

Way too expensive.. Well sorry but here is yet another one star. Fact. The issues ARE NOT FREE. Click and you get the subscription price. Also, as another reviewer pointed out, the prices, not having to print the magazine, are way out of line. A digital magazine should be at least half the price as print. By the way, Apple, I can't prove it but you really should stop any and all participation in the review process by anyone employed, paid to review or associated with the product. That's the Fair and Honest way to do things!

chill out people.. it tells you in the description that it is going to cost to subscribe to the mag. You should all be mad at yourselves for not having taken the extra 15 seconds to read it before downloading. If you can afford it and the subjects interest you I highly recommend this mag.

Grow up people.. Get real people. Did you really think a publisher, like any business, is going to give away it's merchandise? Of course you pay for the pubs. All this app does, along with any other app in news stand that's free, is allow you to purchase issues. What you people seem to expect is to get a flyer from a store for a sale and expect the store to give away is merchandise because you got a advertisement. Get REAL!

You people are absolute idiots.. You can't walk up to a newsstand in real life and just take a magazine for free, and companies sure as hell don't send out free subscriptions, so why would the content for any of the magazines on here be any different.

Wow seriously people?. The magazine download is free and the issues cost money. How hard is it to realize that? It even states it as in app purchases. You folks need to pay attention before 1 staring something due to your ignorance.

Stupid people. You people really think they would give people free issues of magazines? I purchased some of the issues, and it is an amazing magazine

Sample please. Hate this. The least you could do is put some sample things in b4 telling us all to spend $4 on this. Four bucks, btw is the smallest price. Maybe some bundle packs would be nice. Like 5 of a similar genre in one pack that's like 5 bucks. See? Simple. Lets us fooled consumers not be so agitated about being ripped off. Anyone who says tht us 'brats' who 'cry' rip off honestly dont exactly understand how we feel about this. We excepted educational stuff to read at night (or any other time) and we r now being FORCED to spend more money than we'd like to spend.

Nice book!. I spent $9 on it, and each time I tried to open it, it crash without any hesitation! So disappointed!!! Even update cannot solve the problem! However, in the 7th try, it finally came to work, thank goodness!

Awesome!. This was my first subscription for news stand and it's great, all these people rating it one star for not being free are stupid, all the news stand applications are free, that doesn't mean the subscriptions are free, they do this because there are many different ways of paying, you can buy a single magazine or 6 months or 1 year. So don't pay mind to the negative reviews. From an experienced apple user and magazine lover this is great =D

Description. It says in the description the the magazines cost money next time read the description before thinking your getting free. The magazines are very interesting Because of this magazine I now know The basics on how to drive a tank

Excellent App. I don't understand the negative reviews. This app is a vehicle for an online subscription and to purchase back issues at a substantial discount. There is nothing free here. Nor should there be. Like virtually every other magazine, neither back issues nor a subscription are free. If you like this fine magazine and would like to subscribe or purchase back issues at $3.99, this is a great app.

No stars for interaction. If you consider zooming in and out to be interactive, then you'll be satisfied. If you're a subscriber to other mags on iPad like nat geo, pop science and pop mechanics, then you will be very disappointed! All they did was put the print issue into a tablet format. It is difficult to read the content without zooming in 2-3 times and then you have to scroll over, in and out, up and down, all on one page just to see what you're reading about! These guys need to redo their thinking process behind "interaction"and update us before I'll buy a new mag!

I love the arrogant ones who call us stupid. So they are giving us a free app to download their magazine. Thank you? So what good is a free app if you don't want the mag? Duh. Not all of us are app store savvy. We actually have lives and do other things besides learning the ins and outs of the app world. If you are showing your mag and saying free then you can understand the confusion. I'm in Mensa and I felt misled. So now I'm stupid? Stop being so rude.

Issues are hard to read. I don't understand why people complain why this is not free. It's a magazine so they need to make money just like everyone else here. So just stop complaining about that aspect of the how its made mag. But one problem I have is it is impossible to read a full page magazine with pictures and text that you don't even know what's going on in the magazine because the screen is so small on the iPhone 4s. So I would reccomend just to go buy the physical magazine.

Great mag, horrible app. App takes over 5 min just let me view my purchased magazines. Horrible navigation to find the mag I am looking for. Canceled my subscription.

Wow. It truly scares me that some of these "one star" reviewers are eligible to vote for the next US President! What did you really think this app was for? Since you guys DON'T apparently know and didn't even bother to use your heads, I'll spoil the secret: IT'S A FRONT END FOR A SUBSCRIPTION! A 4 yr old or a monkey could have figured that out for themselves, when apparently most of you could not! The app is free to download so that you can buy the sub. To all of you MORONS crying "rip off", go to Barnes & Noble, select any magazine and just tell the cashier that you're gonna take it home for free to see if ya like it. Post your results here instead of your reviews. It would waste all of our time a lot less. See, was that really SOO hard to understand. Do the rest of us a favor and obstain next November? Thxx

Really Works. Excellent information, highly recommended. Apps works excellent

Way cheaper than paper here in the US - AWESOME Mag!. We can’t get the paper edition here in the states for anything resembling a reasonable cost, and compared to import rates, this ipad edition is a steal! I bought the year-long subscription and read each issue cover to cover. How It Works is the ultimate brain-feed for folks who love to learn about science. It’s extremely well written, and quite diverse in its range of topics. If you like Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, etc.; you’ll probably dig this. Download a "preview" before you buy a subscription if you’re not sure.

Nothing but a scam to get your money!. The app it's self is blank, to get material you must purchase their goodies and it ain't cheap! What a waste of time. This app has turned me off the mag for good!

Why pay?. Nothing is free in this app. Not interested paying for electronic information when I've been getting it free all these years. When I buy a magazine I want the physical item not the information inside.

Pricing structure needs review. This is a good publication but the pricing structure makes it an expensive read. Not only are there subscription fees, that subscription does not cover all the magazines. The Special magazines are over $13 each and for a digital publication this is too much.....add the monthly subscription and the cost of the ever increasing Special magazines where the bulk of the content is and the sums get too big to continue to look at this magazine. It's a shame......

Useless. Pointless spending so much for so little.

Missleading. Nothing is free

Not free!!!!. Very annoying, nothing free about this magazine. The app itself is free to download but 4.95 per issue if you want to read it. Have no time for scammers like this lot. Be upfront and you might get more subscribers.

Fantastic magazine. Great magazine for those with an interest in the world around them. Yes you pay for additions but we don't walk into a news agent and take free magazines now do we. Love it. keep up the good work.

Text blurry. The text are a bit blurry to read as compare to the other newsstand app. Please fix? (if it is possible)

Works like PDF. It's like paying 5 bucks for reading PDF... These guys should learn from National Geographic magazine iPad edition.

Plz fix love app. It's a love hate relationship. I hate it crashes sometimes and love it as a magazine. Please fix bugs for those of us that buy it.

Almost Perfect >>>> Future Perfect. Contents are interesting covering vast various topics. The graphics are great and photographs are exquisite. Downsides: 1. give us the print button or ability to save it in PDFs because when I purchased a mag I own it. 2. Where’s the videos? This is a digital era where multimedia is a must. Preferably videos included in the mags so can be viewed offline, NOT STREAMING CONTENT PLEASE !

Only got a star because I couldn't give it none.. Hmm. It's free but you have to pay. Nice hook but none of my money for you. I might have subscribed if you hadn't tried that shabby ploy.

Informational but crashes very often. This app has a lot of info but crashes several times and even after downloading the issue once after it crashes have to download it again. Need to get those bugs fixed please it's spoiling the fun of the magazine

I don't get it!. So I subscribed and they sent me 4 issues so far and now they published a special issue that I can't get for free... So how am I supposed to get my monthly dose?!

Love it!. This magazine is so damn good! I normally never spend money on apps. But I spend on this app for the first time. Money well spent! If you're curious about how the world works this app is for you!

Waste of time!. Unless you want to pay top dollar for this app to actually do anything, don't bother. I wish I could give it zero stars.

No tryout ?!. Whos gonna buy something he cant try ...????

Scam. Now I'll never buy anything from these guys.

I was tricked !. It's not free you have to install this app then pay for a subscription.

Rubbish. Complete waste of time.

Nothing is free. Nothing is free :( Anything is just for purchase...

Not sure the point. Free app? Cost loot to do anything with the app after the free download. Waste of time. Don't bother it's a useless app in my opinion.

Just Another Money Grab. They want four bucks an issue with no free issues. Just another company trying to dip into your pockets

B.S.. It isn't really free all you get with this app is a couple of subscription options to BUY. It is wrongly advertised for being on the free chart

Boo!. This whole News stand App is ridiculous. Subscriptions are very expensive. I can't even delete the App or move it into a junk folder, it doesn't move! Get rid of it!!

FAIL!. I bought an issue but I can't even view it on my iPhone cuz it crashes! Pls fix the bugs

Misleading.. "Free", hmmm - should be "feel free to purchase". I'm sure it's a great magazine, but the use of "free" should at least preclude a free issue, and not a free peep show at the cover art... Even at the local magazine shop I can leif through a copy and see if I like it first. Try again.

Great content. And no issues with subscription neither. Great magazine.

Not free. A sample issue would be the only way I would consider buying and/or subscribing to this!? A free "app" that's useless unless you buy something is not free.

Misleading. The app is free, but subscriptions. At least give us a month trial at least or warn us magazines are not included...

Not Free. It's a come on. Ditched it. Might feel differently if the current issue was included as a sampler.

Misrepresentation. This was shown as free. Once the app is download, it was not. How could anyone trust what is said in your magazine to be truthful.

Rien de gratuit la dedans. C est vraiment un attrape

Lost purchases. Purchased a dozen or so mags and specials additions and I loved them .But as the app upgraded I lost a bunch of mags . Support says delete and reinstall app I did so ,now I have no issues at all and have to fight with support to get them back . Now I'm disappointed and hesitant on ever purchasing another issue from them

Um hello free?. No idea why it said free

It is not free! It is a trick. They mark it as free but it is not free at all. :-(.

Do not waste your 3G data with it.... Fake free app, it is just a shortcut to show paid magazines.

Too expensive. The mags should be free

It's a PAY App. It's a PAY Per Ussue application. Not even 1 free issue. Not worth the try.

Complete garbage. I can't even figure out what this program is supposed to be. Is it a reader? Anyway there's no magazines included. There's nothing here. What did I download? Dumbest waste of time.

Nothing to see. At least give us a sample article or two to see if we like the writing and format, there is nothing in this app but a link to $3.99 issues. Why not a try before we buy teaser? Instead it's just a blank page. I honestly don't know if the magazine is good or bad but the marketing is terrible. For calling this free I'm feeling slighted, it's like a free admission to a retail store.

Terrible!!. Don't waste your time.

Fake. Fake rating fake free magz fake fake. Says it has no rating then you check and it because everyone hates this misleading stuff. Steve would not like this

Waste of time. Not free at all almost a scam

It's a magazine people!. Of course it isn't free! The description is there to be read and it clearly states the subscription fees within. While I agree that a "First Issue" or "Article of the Month" free would be a welcome addition to Newsstand, how can you be so daft to think that you would get free magazine subscriptions to hundreds of great publications? How It Works is an excellent magazine, if you want to get a preview then flip through it the next time you're at a bookstore. Newsstand is a convenient app, glad iOS5 incorporated it.

Why do people hate this app?. It's full of great information, but subbing is stupid. Just buy the issues you want. I love this magazine!

False Advertising. App is free but content is paid only!

Gratuit??? ...Ridicule!. Bravo Apple! ...C'est ce qu'on appelle rire du monde! Pour moi "gratuit" veux dire graaatuit, simonac! ...Rien d'autre!

Update.. Please update this app so the iPhone 5 owners can see at the best the review, because to see the words we have to zoom and it's annoying. Thanks for your time and consideration.

False advertising. Horrible

Scam. Nothing free

What is this 💩?. The newsstand feature is an interesting idea but it will never take off for the price being offered. These magazines are saving in production costs by going digital but seem to feel they're still entitled to the retail magazine price. Get a grip guys.

Awesome!. I learnt Egypt built pyramids in 20years using this app lol

Fake..... This application is fake and is not free

NOT FREE!!!. This is just an app to enable you to buy the magazine subscription - there is NOTHING actually for free! SCAM!!!! How do these 'apps' get allowed by the app store?

NOT FREE. When will apple learn. *shakehead*

My kids love this.. I have the digital version of this magazine on our iPad and I am able to download the whole magazine and the kids can check it out whenever they want it works really well I really like it and so do the kids.

How dare they!. This is not free. Nothing in the Newsstand is free including the free section. What's Apple even thinking of when they added this sham and included it as part of iOS 5 update. Unbelievable!!!

Not working with new update. iPad update for this app freezes

BS. Doesnt even work, screen is black and cant read the magazine i bought

Bad. Why do they say it's free??? It's not!!!

Not phone friendly - expensive. I hate pinch and zooming to read...quality is crap otherwise and impossible to read without zooming around...you would think magazines would take the iBook approach and make it phone friendly...not to mention 3.99 an issue...I would rather go grab it for buck more...not impressed...however the magazine is great.

Free=Pay?????. What is this i guess i learned free to mean something else. I would not even rate this as it does not even warrent a star.

Terrible misleading app. Misleading and deceiving. Not free at all. Disgusting

Crash city. The mag looks interresting so i bought one ($4), however the keeps crashing! What a rip off!! Apparently i can retrieve the mag on my desktop, but that makes the app itself useless.

RIPOFF. Fraudulent advertising nothing is free

Lol. if you losers don't have money to spare, DON'T DOWNLOAD this app as simple as that. I have money and i'm glad i downloaded this mags they are cool! u should label this as NOT FOR POOR IDIOTS =)

Great. I love this app there is so much info in the magazine. I'm sorry if some people are scared to spend money for something great.

Deceptive advertising. If you advertise something as free, then actually have something that's free. Sure, the app says that past issues and future issues cost money, but that implies that the CURRENT issue is the thing that's free. Which would be cool. This sounds like an interesting mag, and I wouldn't mind checking out a copy. But what this is is a FREE opportunity to PAY $3.99 for a digital magazine. Aren't there laws against deceptive ads?

Excellent topics and educational material. Colorful. For those who like to keep up with technology and the inner workings of how things work, and what they are made of, this is a magazine for you. Beautiful colors and illustrations for any age group.

Come on people. Did you really think it would be free? The app is free not the subscription. Quit your whining already.

Bait'n'Switch. Yeah, I coulda dropped $3, but now I'm too irritated to bother....a preview would have indulged my urge to read something, and I probably would've stayed on long enough to buy more, possibly a subscription. We're sorta fickle that way....oh well, off to the next fix. Easy come easy go.

Good magazine, prices are a bit steep. I would be interested as to why the subscription prices are nearly double that of a physical subscription. Otherwise, I would think about subscribing.

Tooo expensive, dificult to read. $4 for each for issue is really expensive (print issues are cheaper), and it is really dificult to read, since it looks like a cheap PDF scan from the print version downloaded from internet.

Amazing but.... They give you a wealth of information and it's all quite fascinating, but it's so hard to read. I have to constantly resize so I understand what's going on. If they gave us a text only option where we could get the articles i would definitely rate it higher, but until then...

How apps Work. For the people who gave this app one star, this magazine is not for you. I would recommend the "How To Read and Understand Words" app. Then possibly you can move up to harder apps like "See Spot Run".

Free what?. I saw "Free" and thought there would be some free content with an option to purchase additional issues. I was ticked off that there was not a single word of content provided other than the "opportunity" to purchase content. Don't call it free if the only freebie is a Platform for spending money.

Good app. I really like this app. The content of each subject matter is excellent; the colors on each page of the magazine are very vibrant. Great photography and computer graphics.

False Advertisement. I initially subscribed to NY Times, which was also advertised as "free". I was pleased with it and decided to try another publication - this one. To my surprise, there was nothing accessible after downloading the app beyond subscription offers... for a fee! Perhaps this is mentioned somewhere, but the bottom line is that you don't get anything worthwhile with this "free" app.

Not worth the risk. I understand you have to pay for the issues or subscription, however they should at least give you a trial issue to check it out. My review is based solely on the fact that you can't test drive the product...furthermore I am unwilling to spend that much money to find out if I like it.

Stupid. Well... It is "free" to download... but there is absolutely zero free "content". No teaser stories to get you hooked -- just a list of ways you can pay them first. This is a waste of time, unless you already know you want to sign up. It seems like Apple should impose a rule preventing this kind of thing from being listed as "free".

What a nightmare. Free issue. Ha ha ha. Where is it and once you've clicked on a magazine you'll spend lots of time trying to cancel and the free app people send you hundreds of words of crap that mean nothing. Not only do I wish I had never clicked on this interesting magazine at this point I wish I never had the bookshelf app

Why is this a free app?. I downloaded this app thinking at least one issue was free. Guess if you see how crappy it really is no one would be duped into buying it. What a waste of space. Very disappointed because I was looking forward to reading all the interesting stuff mentioned in the description. I'm deleting it.

Not free. Thought it sounded like a great app. But it only is selling "how it works " articles or magazines. If it gave you one for free at least you would have an idea what you were getting if you bought one. This will be the first app that I will not only delete from my phone but also try to delete from my iTunes library of purchased apps.

Can't preview, overpriced. Why would u charge full price for a digital version of the magazine that is harder to read and smaller pics? Can't even take a preview of the mag to see if u really like it. At least with the paper edition u can skim through and see if its worth the money or save it for later to read Newsstand is not going to work unless subscriptions r at a fair price like .99 or 1.99

Costs too much. I knew it really wasn't free, but there is no sample issue and it's $40 for a year subscription. That's ridiculous. You can get at least 2 other subscriptions for that price for better known and probably better content magazines (I can say that because there are no sample issues, so I can't compare this to anything). Btw I did buy two subscriptions rather than just this one.

Idiots. No where does it say that there is free stuff in the app. Stop being idiots and reporting a problem saying there is nothing free.

Hi-res and Beautiful!. After a couple of updates, the magazine is now nearly perfect for the new Retina display! It's a great way to learn about science and it's all at your fingertips on the iPad.

Great reading. Definitely deserves 5 stars, just wish the subscription gave access to more without having to pay extra

Lesson to people. All magazine apps are free, however the actual magazines are expensive. In all honesty I got this app only so my newsstand wasn't empty. If you go $8 for a magazine have your self an issue.

:(. When I saw this I got really excited because I love these kind of magazines. I didn't read the description so I didn't realize the issues had to be purchased. I'm not blaming it on the app because I should have read up before I got it, but you should really get at least one free. Please?

Misleading app, pull from the store. Deceptive business practices of I have ever seen them. Free app with no purpose other than selling you the subscription, why do I have the app store if I have to go through another level to purchase something (I understand in app purchases, but the only purpose of this is to sell you). Pull the app from the store apple.

Great Magazine. Yes you have to subscribe, they are not gonna give you a free subscription. If you buy and read the magazine though it is very good and looks fantastic.

Throw us abone!!!. This simple... You want us to read your mag and buy a subscription then give us a sample issue. The app store promotes you as free by the way. You know how to go from excited to dejected in one minute download this app. Your downloading a free app that allows you to pay full price for a magazine. Where is the incentive?

Not a rip off, but close. Yes, the front end app is free. So what?! It's just a storefront for selling subscriptions or issues of How It Works. Yes, they're upfront about it so I'm not b1tching about deception. There's just ZERO value here. Not even a sample issue is offered to tease you into buying more. Major fail. Delete. EOL.

More than typical magazines!!. How is it that this requires no printing or postage but is more expensive than most magazines. I also have no idea if it is any better than my dollar an issue popular science since they don't offer a sample. I just still really want to like it...

Retina Display Support? No!. I've been waiting for magazines to update their content for the new iPad and was excited about the stated upgrade here. I'm not sure what went wrong, but the content is even worse with 2.5 than before. The magazines are all but unreadable with their small font size. Until they really do update for Retina, I'd stear VERY far away from this one.

Good content, ok U.I.. Just like a lot of other people have said, the user interface could use some work. To the publisher, try checking out Popular Mechanics. That's what you should be striving for. Other than that, the content is good. Lots of interesting material.

Great. I love it!!! Very educational. If you could view the whole magazine then why would you have to buy it? Duh.....

well ur eyesight stinks. THERE IS A FREE MAGAZINE. U just have to look. so all u naggers sayin theres "no free content" arent giving it a chance. Just flip all the way to the right and there it is the FREE magazine. But otherwise yea i agree it is a bit over priced...

Capital!. It's really really great magazine I've ever seen. These are not free issues, but these are worth it. YOU GUYS are too fond of getting something for nothing. It is a magazine of 100 pages in length!

Wow you guys fail. Why would they give out free magazines? You are all pretty dumb

Basic rip off. Had I read the description better, I would have understood that app is not free and only sets you up so you can buy some overpriced magazine articles. It's not free and a waste of space on my phone.

Read. Why people think this would be free? I have no idea. It gives you exactly what they advertise if you READ. But it is a bit high-priced. 4 stars

No free sample. I'm not looking for a free ride but I would at least like to read a few pages of a magazine before paying for a subscription. A bookstore lets you do at least that. Come on! And there's no way to delete the newsstand app. You can't even minimize it into another folder. So it just takes up space.

Interesting.... The app is really interesting. I give the 4 stars to the content but no one wants to read on such a tiny screen! It gives me a headache. And it is not free AT ALL!

Would have liked it. If there had been a content overview or a single free subscription I would have considered the year subscription...but I have no interest in buying something I can't see first. I was interested...thought of getting it...thought I was getting a free subscription. Forget it.

Really? This is just wrong. This jumped right over the gray area of "not sure if this is a good business practice" to way past unethical. As much as I would like to read this magazine, and would probably be willing to pay a nominal fee, I will never read one word from any issue because of this level of deceiptfulness

Best iOS Magazine 2011. Hands down the best magazine available on iOS. The format makes it great for quick reads while waiting somewhere or on the plane.

It. Setting up a subscription is easy. Figuring out how to change the settings so you don't "auto renew" is not easy… I've been at it for an hour. First it would't let me change the setting… Now I can't even get back to the page where I'm supposed to make the change… Why would anyone want to auto new, anyways?

What a steal.... (out of your wallet!). $3.99 for an issue!!!!! And Like $37 for a yr subscription! This should be cheaper than the actual hard copy on the real stand! I could go for .99 per issue and or $9.99 for year subscription! Please drop prices! You'll get more revenue! I really want to read the articles but refuse with the high price!

Meh. No free content. At $3.99 an issue, I could just subscribe through the mail and pay a fraction of that and have the good old fashioned feel of an actual magazine. Or I can just pop on the Science channel on Directv and see How It's Made and Understanding and the like. And since I already do the latter, this app is history.

It's a subscription.. It's a magazine. A very popular magazine. If the magazine were free digitally, everyone qould stop buying the print version.

Cool magazine. Despite the terrible reviews, if you like to read something while waiting for class to start, or killing some time (sittin' on the John), this is a great mag. Some topics are kind of lame, but they really cover a wide range of topics..so there is definitely something for everyone. App would lag every now and then. I don't understand why people expect a free magazine? That would be like walking into Barnes n noble and just taking their mags.

Really?. What is wrong with people these days. Read the description and you will see the magazine isn't free just the app. 1 star app ratings for nothing. Ignorant people in this world.

In response to kaiyovu.... Well, duh! And most of these "Free" applications allow you to preview at least one month, article, or whatever. Some don't. It's up them, not me.
