The Guardian Editions Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Support In-depth Reporting and a Fantasic App. The app is exactly as you would hope: fast, easy to navigate and, most importantly, easy to read. And it's full every day with clever, in-sightful and in-depth reporting.

Just Updated and Can’t Use!. I have been using this App for years and really like it but now they updated it and the App Store subscription doesn’t work and I can’t use it at all. This despite me writing twice during the beta which I also couldn’t use because of this issue including an email just before the launch mentioning the same issue and now the actual new version of the app is out it still doesn’t work!

Great app. The layout and design of this app is well thought out. Good balance between text and photos. Interesting to read stories from both The Guardian and The Observer, though I much prefer The Guardian.

Another orphan. My app became non responsive at the end of June and wouldn't let me extend a subscription I'd been successfully using for several months previously. After a couple of iterations with customer support they gave me free trial for 1 month. When that expired I get the same problem all over again. Can't resubscribe. None of the buttons work. Kinda ridiculous. Makes it more like a PC-based product than something for Apple.

Excellent app and content. Well designed, easy to use and it works perfectly on my iPad3. This is a solid publication and the app does it justice. Great effort!

A different perspective. Great to get an outsiders' view of US news and also learn about events in the rest of the world that we don't always hear from American media. Articles are very well written.

Love the interface. The interface is great! Very easy to navigate between articles and issues and rich and vibrant display with colors. Other journals need to take a cue.

Preliminary impression: Missing content & tags. I've been using the Guardian app on my iPhone for some time and have found it to be one of my two favorite news apps, in part because of the excellent tagging system which makes it easy to discover both new and archived content, and in part because of its flexible section/tag system. This app is missing both of those. It's a strange omission, since clearly the metadata is already available. There thus seems to be less content in this app, and less discoverability, than the iPhone one. I'm very pleased with the content, and am likely to purchase a subscription to support the paper, but I will be disappointed if the flexibility and marvelous archive which I've grown to love is not available here. For now, I've placed the iPhone app on my iPad next to this one. P.S. An earlier review complained that there were no sample issues. There are—just past issues, rather than future ones.

Best newspaper app to date!. After trying many well known news apps, I am thrilled to have found the best app to date!

Missing content? No observer?. I don't understand why there's so much more content available for free on the Guardian website which aren't available in the App. It's hard to see it as anything other than contempt for the people who are actually paying for a subscription, since they get less than the people pay nothing and just go to the web site. Also it's fine that apps develop over time and not everything anyone might like is there at the start. But it seems like the Guardian aren't actually trying to address anything, like add Retina support or adding any additional content. I think these problems are a terrible shame for what was originally a great app and a genuinely original new media experience. It still could be great.

Finally. I was wondering how long it would take The Guardian to get it together and deliver an app with "teeth" suitable for the iPad. Looks great, works great and thanks for the generous free trial, I'll certainly be subscribing when it ends. Quality journalism is always worth paying for.

Great design. I might be a Yank, but the Guardian offers plenty of content from an ecumenical and universal ethical grounding that it's worth reading. The design is also fabulous, offering both simplicity, great color and contrast design, and interactions that are both useful and interactive.

Style over content. Okay, so the app is quite cool and colorful (the hues are not totally to my taste either) and mercifully bug-free even in the 1.0 version which is no mean feat but my main gripe is the limited nature of the content. I understand that the Guardian have had to compromise between complete content versus push loading etc., but this is far too compromising. Good novelty app when free but doesn't replace print or website so why subscribe when the generous free trial ends?

Re-subscribe woes. I, too, am unable to resuscitate my subscription. Have reinstalled several times, tried both a new subscription and re-starting the old when the annoying little Subscribe box pops up. The Helpers have tried (by suggesting I do what I've done several times and providing my UDID, etc.). They appear to have now run out of ideas and steam, and are silent for the past week. I'm now giving up on the Guardian. Pity. But the IHT, Sunday Times, Slate etc function properly.

The way a newsstand app should be. There are so many really good things about this app. It pushes the new edition every morning, so that I can read it even offline, the quality of the interface and the content are both superb, it comes with a free 3 month trial subscription, you can choose to update the edition later in the day when the evening print edition is published, it integrates sharing without being obtrusive. The Guardian app is the standard by which I measure all other newsstand publications, which means that the bar is set awfully high.

Great app for a terrific news outlet. The Guardian app downloads the entire content of the web-based edition of The Guardian on a daily basis, rather than presenting an interface to an online edition. This means that you can take it with you, rather than needing a wifi connection to access it. In the event of updates, the entire issue is updated. This is a bit of a bother at times, but necessary to achieve the degree of portability. Content is well organized on the app and there are links to related content on the Guardian website, allowing you to delve deeper into a topic or explore its background. Guardian journalism is first-rate, giving readers a view of the world available in no US daily publication, not even the NY Times. And the subscription price, through the ITunes store, is extremely reasonable.

orphaned app?. Worked for a while, but now wants me to resubscribe. However, the subscribe and resubscribe buttons are dead. Push on the subscribe button and nothing happens. Try the resubscribe button, I'm asked for my Apple ID, but nothing happens after that. Sent an e-mail to customer support, got machine answer back, five days later still no reply. Maybe the app has been abandoned?

Fantastic App and Journalism. I have so thrilled with the updates to this app. The journalism is second to none and presents a refreshing voice to anything here in the U.S. The app is easy to use and beautiful in its presentation of the news.

Never able to log in. I paid for a subscription through Google and have the bill to prove it. I lost access shortly afterwards (I got a few weeks) was never able to log back in. Attempts to generate a new password always failed, I never received any communication. Tech support at the guardian were completely unhelpful and I was never able to solve the problem. I am glad the money went to a good cause but was astonished by the lack of access and support.

My favorite news source. I have been a subscriber since I got my first iPad and could not do without a daily review of the news in The Guardian. The daily photographs and special articles made for mobile devices make it a must get app.

Fantastic!. Just a fantastic app! Very well thought out, very well designed, uses the iPad features to the maximum extent. Guardian has a great website, but this app provides an amazing experience, definitely recommend.

Twitter integration not working. Nice app and a great news source. Will subscribe when my trial period runs out. For whatever reason, Twitter integration doesn't work for me. I'm wondering if it's because I'm in the US and this is a British newspaper expected to be read in the UK? Or only tested from the UK perhaps? Hope that's fixed with the next update.

Perfect. This is a perfect digital newspaper. It surpasses print in every way, and the Newsstand automatic download works flawlessly. The journalism is top notch as well. As a bonus they are running a trial 1 year free subscription. How can you beat that?

Looks good but misses the mark. A very handsome app but with the style and technology sections missing, I can't see shelling out 10 quid a month for it. I would much prefer the ability to customise the content to suit my tastes. For now, I'm better satisfied with reading it online.

The best news app there is. Great interface but it's the news that counts and the Guardian is second to none.

Best news app for iPad. This is probably the best app in the newsstand. It is formatted well, you can actually select text (it isn't just a huge image file) and now it has instapaper integration for some things (which is a nice way to save content rather than insisting we change our workflow and save things in the app like every other newspaper app). Performance seems to have improved with this update too.

Reading that guardian is losing money i signed up for subscription but. This app is unbelievably bad. It looks great but it is clearly designed by and for cook book illustrators. As some people know there is an economic crisis in Europe with, for now, Spain, under attack. It is impossible to find anything on this from todays app even though on the web Tremlett has an excellent article. We need to support the Guardian but ignore the app!

No "social" features = not subscribing. I would give the appearance and content quality a 4/5 rating, however the complete inability to comment on an article means I won't be subscribing and takes the overall app down to 2/5. Content may be king, but if a tree falls in the woods, with nobody to comment or discuss it with friends or strangers, does it make any noise?

This is what an iPad app should be. Fantastic news app! Navigation is easy and logical. Well designed. Just the right amount of information that does not weigh you down with too much detail.

Fantastic app. This is the first review I have written despite having bought a great many other apps, but this is just such a great thing and I wanted to tell everyone involved what a great job they've done. I live in the US but love the Guardian and what it stands for, and this app exemplifies the brand at its best. Great journalism delivered with cutting edge, user friendly technology - all at a great price!!

Easy to Navigate, No Distracting Advertisements. I like the way I can save my reading preferences that sorts them into categories in which I’m interested. The app is very easy to navigate. It also eliminates the endless and annoying pop up advertisements that plague the NY Times app, which I stopped using because it was so awful.

I wish it were better. I read the Guardian every day - it's one my my three main sources of news. I really wanted to express my loyalty by subscribing on-line, instead of just going to their excellent website, but this app is just so unsatisfying, that after a week I cancelled the subscription. The app features large pictures and bars of color, but I can't really tell what the story is about from just the picture, and because the pictures are so large they consume a lot of the screen, so there is actually less usable information on each screen. It also makes me download each edition instead of just updating it, and it takes a long time (the pictures, I suppose). Navigation is harder than it has to be. It's too bad. The New York Times really nailed how to be a world class newspaper with a App presence. I wish the Guardian had done so as well.

Good for reading - but nothing else. To the programmers: don’t you think your users might want to: print a story? Share a link? Bookmark a recipe?

Fantastic newspaper, buggy App?. I don't know what else there is to say. It's a bright bold exciting design that is intuitive to use. I love using it. However having said that, my one gripe is that every time I try to download the days newspaper it ALWAYS crashes the first time and always loads perfectly the second time.

Why no zoom feature on this app?. I can't be the only person who gets eye strain from trying to read the Guardian on my ipad can I? The major appeal of reading on a tablet is that, whether I'm on the tube or in bed, I can read without first having to fumble around trying to locate my reading glasses. Therefore, I cannot understand why this app doesn't include a zoom feature for increasing the font size. Surely this should be standard on any reading app? This will be the 'deal breaker' for me if it's still not added by the time my subscription is due for renewal. Developers - please act quickly. Great newspaper, but without this feature, it's hard to read.

Great way to read the Guardian. I'm surprised at the bad reviews of this app. It's a great way to read the Guardian as opposed to the website - well designed and thought out for the iPad from scratch, rather than trying to replicate a newspaper experience. Only complaint is the Observer doesn't seem bundled with the Guardian subscription, as this page would lead you to believe, and sometimes navigation is difficult. A few extra features like saving for later and/or better integration with Instapaper wouldn't go astray either. But they're nitpicks - this app is great.

A total joke. This iteration of my beloved Guardian is the dogs breakfast. Large blocks of useless annoying color adorn the front page with little helpful text. The same holds true for the Sections. In an effort to look hip they have tarted up this app with purples and blues and have ruined navigation. Don't get me wrong the journalism is still the same and the offline reading is nice. Thats what gets it the two stars. But for an app that I would subscribe to regularly? Not with this poor example of polish. The Giardian website is still faster, more up to date and easier to use. Guardian take a tip from the news aggregators. Present the stories to me so I can make choices and not be assaulted by your ideas of a keel color palette.

App gets more annoying. Now when you scroll down, the article you happen to touch opens. Close it, try to scroll again, close the article you have inadvertently opened again. Eventually you get down the page but should it be this hard ? The grouping of articles and hiding them behind a plus sign seems to me just basic poor design, aren’t apps meant to be intuitive ? Finally, the download speed, always irritating, never improves. Approx 20 secs to update the nytimes (which does have its own issues). 10 mins on the same WiFi for the guardian daily. Excellent paper, bad app

Fantastic!. Recreates the newspaper experience from a holistic, rather than imitative, position. Graphics are gorgeous, interface is incredibly usable and inviting, and, of course, the journalism is excellent. This is an excellent model for other papers exploring the iPad as a publishing platform. Well worth the money for a subscription.

New version has poorer navigation. Still a great read but the removal of the section navigation bar at the top of each page is a disaster. User interface design conventions point to "fewer clicks" for better navigation - this version now requires bringing up a drop down menu and clicking on a section to get there - takes longer and more clicks than swiping and scrolling along the navigation bar. It is like it has been designed for a regular web page rather than the IPad. Please get with the program and bring back the navigation controls that are iPad oriented rather than conventional web controls.

A brilliant way to deliver the news. Not that I would expect any less of the guardian, but this is a beautifully seamless way to read the news from one of the best newspapers in the world

Crossword is awful. I love the newspaper. I love the journalism. I even love the crossword. So, the 2 stars is posted in a fit of pique because I can’t believe that after all this time and effort they’ve spent prettifying the app they haven’t sorted out the dismal functionality of the crossword. It can’t be that difficult to sort out and it’s not as if they haven’t been told.

Twitter integration seems broken. The UI is pretty and intuitive. I definitely recommend this App. However, as I said in the title, Twitter integration seems broken. They should try to fix it.

Overall: Attractive and Appealing. User Satisfaction: I enjoy reading the Guardian. It is an interesting news app with very appealing features. The app offers a great news source. The app's graphics are pleasing. The overall app is attractive. I would highly recommend this app to a friend or colleague.

Wish the other publications would follow suit.. Great format, excellent content, and an awesome free trial that gives you a chance to experience it all with no risk.

Gorgeous, great for offline, but missing sections. I finished the 81 day free trial two months ago, and still come back to this app almost every day. It's perfect for the subway, because there's no need for an active internet connection. Nonetheless, this is a smaller edited version of the print or online version. While the interface and portability are great, I've occasionally been on Facebook or Twitter and seen a friend post a great article from the guardian from sometime in the last week, only to find that although I had read all 6 iPad editions that week, had not seen the article. While I was visiting London I bought the paper edition a few times to compare that day's content and the iPad content. The images and text flow much better in the paper edition, and with the online edition the comments are always entertaining. The in-app browser function could be improved too. Nicest: paper edition Fullest: online edition Most portable: iPad edition

Excess photo/text on front page: why not select other countries?. Guardian news coverage is excellent. Need to change overall front page ratio, smaller or fewer pictures, more text on what the story is about. Or, at least let user pick if the want more pictures or more text. Also, navigation is awkward. Both NY Times and Washington post get balance and navigation better. Separate issue, why is "Guardian Editions" UK and Australia, and a separate App, "The Guardian" is needed for US coverage?

Nightmarish. I have had nothing but problems with this app. I used to subscribe and wanted to do so again. I download the app, puchase a subscription through the App Store, and simply cannot get the app to let me see an issue. It knows I have a subscription but won't let me download an issue and never moves off the "you need to subscribe" screen. I have tried removing it and reloading it...oh, a dozen or so times. I go to the website and look for help and none of the email links for help work. I give up. Great newspaper...just wish I could read the bloody thing!

What happened to my favorite newspaper app???. Same here regarding lack of ability to renew and restore old issues and sub at beginning of new month. Been a subscriber for eight months, hd problems renewing twice before now still unable to get new issues after four days. What gives??. Love the paper AND the app -- when it works. Not loving' it now

Version 5.2.1. This is a horrifyingly bad “update”. It may help with one hand scrolling on a phone but the tablet experience is awful. A drop down menu linking to particular sections would be useful instead of incessant scrolling to find a particular section also we have now lost links to other associated articles next to an article we are reading. The whole navigation of the paper is now needlessly complicated and I do not want a curated front page by your editors we should have ease of navigation led by our own curiosity. The last iteration was not great but this is by no means an improvement.

Excellent update. This latest update works really well. Articles are grouped (e.g. coronavirus, world, journal, financial) and it is easy and intuitive to move from one article directly to the next or to go back to the top view and search for the next article you are interested in. As a subscriber, I really enjoy the lack of all adverts. It is a pleasure to use.

Why am I getting ripped off?. I pay $19.90 a month subscribing to this UK Guardian publication (via the Apple Store) yet it is now "Unable to Render" every article ... so I'm paying for the headlines only. I have also paid another several hundred dollars for a years subscription to the Australian edition (again via the Apple Store. And once every month I get told I haven’t subscribed to one or another Guardian app, spend a day or two trying to sign on while having the app close down on me, then a day or so later things work again.

crosswords. Nice app, but why aren't the crosswords available?

Thought I'd found a bug.... ...no icon! But it's gone into that pesky new "newsstand" icon. You do know we can make our own folders if we really want them, don't you Apple? Hopefully the update in ios 5.1 will allow us to decide where we want to put our own icons. I currently have the Guardian iPod icon on my front "page" of my iPad, and would prefer that I could do the same should I subscribe to the iPad edition. The App itself is lovely on first viewing - smooth, pretty easy to navigate etc. Much better on the iPad than the current iPod/iPhone version. Given that one print issue is now about AU$1.85 weekdays and $3.25 on a Saturday, $15 a month is about a week and a day's print cost for the whole month. As long as we get access to ALL the sections, that is... would be a shame to miss out on the extra features in G2 and the weekend mags etc. If the alternative is 2 print copies of The (Melbourne) Age a week versus 6 days of The Guardian? No comparison. Where do i sign?

Australian Editions Missing. Each time the app opens, the only available editions are the UK editions. Disappointing as this app is why I have a subscription 😞

Content great, app has bugs. Photos and associated headings on the left of the app disappear when scrolling. They are there one second, scroll and they are gone the next. Scrolling on and they flicker. Been happening for a while. Exclusive to Guardian app (doesn’t happen with other news apps) Latest iPad running latest iOS

Change it back. This is not an improvement Was arguably the best news app out there, it’s now destroyed. Want to just read through the paper? Nope, got to go back to the home page at each section. Want to know where you were? Nope, that’s gone Awful, needs a lot of work.

Great content, UI needs work. I love reading the guardian’s journalism, but the massive white space down the side is such a waste on my iPad. Plus a dark mode would be good instead of everything being on a white background.

Dodgy company I once respected. DODGY SALES — DO NOT TRUST — I respected this company for their journalism until I subscribed on their Australian website and then it turns out I was paying for UK local news and this was never made clear through the Australian website which claimed I could cancel “anytime” but when I tried to cancel the subscription through the app, it said I had to call a UK number in “business hours” (UK business hours when I’m in Australia and subscribed through their AU site), after contacting sales I have receive ZERO RESPONSE AFTER 2 MONTHS. Super dodgy company DO NOT TRUST EVER.

Great but expensive. App is easy to use, however subscription is expensive. I would like to see access to the Australian version of the paper

Mgbutler. I cannot download the current edition of the Guardian IPAD edition and I hope that this does not continue otherwise I will expect a refund. I have tried to make contact to make an inquiry but there is no obvious address.

Can we get bigger text?. Love the content, best way to read the paper, but can we get bigger font? Other papers give bigger font online so that would be great!

E-text without search is crippleware. There's little point to any text based application without a search facility.

Am locked out because l subscribed through the App Store. If l had paid my annual subscription to The Guardian directly l would have automatically had access to the Weekend app. I have Apple devices and having downloaded the app purchased The Guardian subscription ‘in app’. That made actually accessing The Guardian difficult because the App Store doesn’t provide the same security sign in as actual The Guardian’s own store. Even more annoyingly, l can’t even separately ‘subscribe’ to the Weekend Guardian because you can only do that as a Guardian subscriber, which the system doesn’t recognise me as, because l came in through the Apple store. Deddlebu8, Melbourne, Australia

Excellent app but I will not be paying a subscription. An excellent app but not worth a subscription, sorry.

Great app, let down by download speed.. Really like the app, looks beautiful. However, the issue download speed is highly variable. Sometimes it's a matter of seconds, but most days it takes 15 minutes or more.

Superb. What would you expect from the best newspaper in the world. This! It's fantastic. As an expat living in Sydney this is a must.

Easy to stay informed.. The app is set out like a real newspaper without all those irritating pop up adverts. The very best of journalism and editorial comment

Terrible move. New format not fit for purpose on my iPad. Clunky transitioning between stories - no longer able to tap edge of screen to move forward or back. Content not saved on device - images not available when not on line. Have not seem a graphic image since loading the new - extremely disappointing. Enjoy a laugh. Crossword layout and usability primitive. I really don’t like it. Can you tell?

If only Australia would learn. The iPad app brings the quality journalism of the Guardian (much improved from the days of the Gruniad he he) with an intuitive and friendly interface. I am looking forward to the Observer being part of the iPad edition. I read the Guardian daily for its world coverage. Really wish wish Australia had a paper and Journos of this calibre. Then they might make an app worth purchasing.

A disaster. Why try to 'fix' something that ain't broke? This version is far less intuitive than the predecessor, and seems to completely lack even the intermittent presence of the 'share' button that used to allow quick printing, saving or posting of individual articles. It's bad enough to tempt me to cancel my subscription. -- wright4321

Well done guardian people. At last the guardian on iPad. Pricing policy across apple is one global price point that means a pretty high price for us down in oz, but still worth to get a uk news fix. Would like to see more sharing on image banks and some video please. Are they going to drop the ads when the price kicks in?

Disappointed Guardian and you want how much per month?. I'm a great fan of the Guardian and subscribe to the GW from Australia. I subscribe to the iPhone app and was wondering when their iPad app would arrive. This app is a dumbed down US style Flipboard with NO content. Where is the rich Guardian news content? I'd happily pay $15/ mth for an online subscription to the existing rich content Guardian website but not this content less iPad app. By comparison, the Economist iPad app (to which I subscribe) has 100% of the printed edition - it is identical. Please scrap this app and copy the Economists 100% approach.

Font size?. A nice app that is let down by the inability to change the font size.

Brilliant. Works well, looks great, could use some more interactive material, but otherwise, I can't fault it.

Great app but where is The Obsever?. Wonderful app bringing me back in touch with my fave UK Newspaper - sanity in a mad world. Very useable and intuitive. The price would be acceptable if it included The Observer. There appears little reason why it is not included given there is no Observer app.

Drains battery unbelievably!. I had to take it off. Even with Background App Refresh off, it used up 70% of my battery while I slept. Really really odd.

Brilliant benchmark. Really well put together and lovely layout and the intent is quite good too. Well done.

Love it!. We love this app and we will be paying for it. It has all the sections we've missed with The Guardian Weekly, and the graphics look ace in the iPad. Excellent app.

Good app but no flexibility in price structure. I enjoyed my trial period with this app and did not experience any of the crashes other people have reported, however, I found that I only really wanted either the Saturday edition and/or The Observer. And you don't get the latter with this version of the app and you don't get the option to only have the Saturday edition. I'd be willing to pay half the price for the one or 2 week-end papers, but you don't get the choice, so...sorry - no sale.

Some transparency missing. I enjoy the regular app, I'm a paid supporter. I do not like how the articles in this app do not have the date and time they were published on them. It is a big feature to miss hopefully they can fix

Great content, but irritating format. I love the Guardian, but I think this app is trying a bit too hard to look like Windows 8, at the expense of usability. Too much wasted screen real-estate (empty space) with too large fonts. Few story summaries so you have to click to find out what the story is about. And the vertical scrolling is irritating in the same way that a broadsheet format is irritating. I also read the Sydney Morning Herald app and they've really got it right! Text summaries next to every headline so you don't have to click to find out what the story's about; a compact format thats easy to read but has lots of detail in the summary screens, and a photo for each story so it looks good; and horizontal scrolling only for the summary pages which is a much quicker and easier experience. I'd agree that $10/mth seems to be the price people are ok with. Hopefully they'll listen to feedback and I look forward to the cheaper and more comfortable version 2.

No text selection. Nice design but you can't select the text of articles in order to use the iOS built-in dictionary. You also can't pinch to zoom or double tap to make the text bigger and easer to read!

Why do people whinge about paying?. Why do people on this and other apps complain about paying for subscriptions? What do they expect, companies should provide it all for free? Journos don't need money to live? This has a perfectly reasonable subscription fee. $15 per month is just 50c per day. That's far cheaper than a physical newspaper and more convenient.

A great subscription. This app works really well and its easy to swap between the UK, USA and AU editions whenever you want to through the settings button.

Hucksters. Free initially and then they start charging.

Good read. The guardian app is one of my daily reads. Easy to use, and good access to the areas which interest me

Guardian App crashes. I have the Guardian App on my iPad and when it use it and get to the Ffnancial page, it crashes. I wonder if it's something to the Channel 4 ads.

The Guardian is indispensable!. In our time zone, here in Australia, we get the new edition every lunch time, an read it every afternoon. The best editions are Friday with film, and Saturday and Sunday with reviews and wonderful magazine articles. Life without the Guardian app - unthinkable! Steve

Simply the best. Living in Australia, sadly I cannot buy the Guardian newspaper every day, but this app is the next best thing. It is hands-down the best way to read the paper digitally, the design of the app and curation of the content is absolutely top notch. Couldn't live without it!

No stars. The guardian's journalism may be terrific but app and customer service isn't. Cant read a thing, app doesn't work. Paid for a subscription, followed all FAQ for troubleshooting and the app still doesn't accept my subscription so is useless to me. No reply to multiple emails. Payed for nothing!

The old app was far better. This version is so bad that I cancelled my subscription to it. I far preferred the older version of this app - it was the perfect iPad magazine. I now use the website and subscribe to that. It was a bad move to cancel the old app and move to this one.

A joy to read. Love it. Only wish they had an Australian edition...

Lovely app, but future subscriptions too expensive. Lovely app, but like many other newspaper apps the price is far too high for what is essentially a repackaged website. From January they will charge AUD$15 a month. As you're paying mainly for convenience and, unlike a physical paper, can't keep it after the subscription period ends, no more than AUD$10 a month would be more appropriate. Also, advertising text dropped into emailed articles should be dropped from is (to be) an already paid app. (This review coverd the app, not content. Which is wonderful, except that G2 section is missing and, unlike the similarly priced kindle edition, there's no Sunday Observer included in the price.)

Good value, more options would be welcome. Both Guardian and Observer are excellent and valued sources of objective comment. However, I would appreciate being able to subscribe only to the Observer, or only to the Guardian Australia, for example, from time to time. Finally, I would like to have the option of subscribing to the full newspaper, on line.

Great app. I like this app. One of the better UK newspapers... If you are slightly to the left. What I really about is I could share stories with friends unlike some of the other UK newspaper apps. I wish they would give you the option to see the actual newspaper as it appears in print.

Terrible - Destroyed a great App. I used to love the Guardian Daily App, its was one of my favourites . It looked and felt like the newspaper itself. This “improvement” takes that concept, rips it up and throws it in the bin. A travesty. This is a cut down version of the main Guardian app hard to navigate. The sections don’t follow the paper. Comment and journal have disappeared. I would recommend to anyone DON’T download this. I want the old app back.

Turns The Guardian into a taboid. The screen is filled with big pictures, big headlines, and no text at all. This makes it impossible to read the paper efficiently. I am deleted it.

EXCELLENT. Fast.works good.

Not bad, but $14/month!?. I still fail to understand why they think I will pay $14/month for content that they give away for free on the website. The app is a bit slicker but harder to navigate than the website, and no commenting ability.

Top notch. Great coverage, great app!

Great reporting, great writing. The first paper I read every morning.

Returned to glory. After a short-lived horrible experiment with full page ads, this is again the very best newspaper app

Great newspaper app. Best one out there. Easy to use. Interesting paper

Excellent presentation of newspaper. This app maximizes the potential of iPad format to present the newspaper. The combination of swiping and scrolling works well and quality of graphics is high. I have used several other equivalent apps for print newspapers and the Guardian is the best. Advantages include: downloading content which can be read when off line; clarity of photos and graphics; easy to navigate, etc. and of course there is the excellent content and well written journalism.

For the most part, very good.. The content in the app is obviously superb and the design is very nice, however it could be made better. Swiping between articles is too sensitive. I scroll through the articles with my right thumb, holding my iPad in portrait, but I accidentally find myself looking at the next article all too often. The text should also be In the centre of the screen and cover about 3/4 of the screen's width (similar to Safari Reader). It would be nice to be able to dread in full screen, too. Most of the time the sidebar just distracts from the text. It would be nice If it was situated at the bottom and hidden unless the user swipes up from the bottom of the screen.

Works as I'd want. As an app allowing me to read the Guardian with ease, good graphics and easy access to digital connections, this works very well. The future of papers!

Unsubscribing. To unsubscribe, hold down the Newstand icon until it wiggles, then open the guardian and delete

Not worth it. $13.99 a month is about $10 too much. The amount is insulting considering regular website content is free of charge. Dear Guardian - be less greedy and I'll pay for the iPad app.

How do you unsubscribe ?. The app is nicely designed and easy to use , unsubscribing is another matter . I've looked all over and cannot find any way to opt out of the subscription . Any suggestions ?

Needs retina support!!. The developers of this app should look to the NYT for inspiration. It desperately needs among other things retina support, the ability to change text size and an overall better landscape mode. The content is there, it just needs a worthy vehicle to deliver it.

Not bad. It's okay but still no retina support. Quite a let down if you ask me.

Five stars. Guardian app is the best designed app for ipad. Content is rich, writing is excellent. Other publications should learn from the Guardian app.

The Guardian and Observer. Great newspaper in digital form. Love every day's reporting.

Excellent content. Excellent content, love how it downloads new issues overnight. But it always crashes one time when I open it in the morning. Open it again, then it works.

Issue won't download. On a mobile good broadband connection in Peru an issue never downloads.

A good morning read. For a Brit living in Canada, this app provides well written, socially responsible articles keeping me up to date with national and international news and to the point commentary.

App support poor. Supposedly supports family sharing it doesn't support doesn't respond. Web page says sign in w other users I'd that's not family sharing you twats . If I download my purchases under her App Store it wants a subscription. If it can't be resolved I will cancel prior to next renewal and get a paper that does support

Inefficient. Huge pictures and awkwardly large type leave little room on the screen for information. This may be fine if you want to wallow in the publication but if you want to scan the headlines to select what to read, the web site or the other app is preferable.

👉 Are you looking for an Adsense alternative advertising platform?

Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!

iPad deficient. The new app may have improved the app for telephone use, but has not improved for tablet viewing. Prior software was preferable for a tablet.

SUPERB!. Bravo! The excellence of this premier newspaper is now complemented by an impressive application. Look no further for a true exemplar of journalistic integrity and good writing.

User experience massacre. It feels like it was designed for a different platform with tiles and panels everywhere and no clear usability. Best option here is to go to their web site and add to bookmarks there.

Lovely but incomplete. The app is beautiful and offers an immersive experience. But the content is woefully incomplete. It's disappointing that sections like the Observer Food Monthly are available free online but not in the paid app. The enhanced experience may not yet be worth the cost.

Great, but, where is the Sunday Observer?. Great paper with a deservedly good app. Indispensable news and cultural source, breezy, browsable app. But why no option for the Sunday Observer?

New version is a pain.. Guardian re-organized the app, but I would say they broke it. I enjoyed reading it to keep up, but now I am about ready to cancel it. It was working fine then they had to “improve” it. All I can say is BLAH!

No Trial Period. I didn't subscribe when I saw the trial period is "0" issues! Really. I almost missed that. Nice try.

love it. Pretty. Plus they have great content and their share buttons work. .. Read all my reviews on crosswa.lk ..

Costs 14 bucks a month. Avoid it.. Costs 14 bucks a month. Avoid it.

Beautiful app -- finally fixed the subscription problem. Now that they've fixed the subscription issue (after a year!), I take back all the negative things I've said about this app. It's one of my favorites, ------------- I wanted to echo the other reviewer who said that he lost his subscription a month ago and couldn't get it back. The same thing happened to me several months ago. The help team has tried to help -- everytime I renew my subscription and the app doesn't see it, they give me a new 30-day trial period to cover it, but that's completely unsustainable. I'm giving up. I hope they fix this problem in the future, since they need the revenue. In the meantime, there's always PressReader, but it's more expensive and harder to use. -------- This is my favorite news app. The interface and navigation are well-designed, and I really like the direct integration with Instapaper (would that the NYT app had that capability!), although I do wish that all articles could be Instapapered. The app seems extremely stable, except that sometimes it crashes the first time I attempt to download an issue (the second time, it works), but I blame that on my iPad 1 running iOS 5 -- it's likely a RAM shortage, and once the iPad 3 comes out, I'm sure the problem will go away. I also like the fact that it downloads a snapshot of an actual issue, rather than offering a constantly updated newsfeed. I understand the need for the latter, but I also like knowing that a story won't go away just because I read the paper latter in the day. While the NYT is still my go-to news source, I'm happy to subscribe to the Guardian, too, and make it my second newspaper. I can read the next day's issue of the Guardian before I go to bed the night before, then get the latest news with the NYT app the next morning.

Worldly and fair. The best balanced view of world news that is available any where! Plus the EPL coverage is awesome!

Simply sexy!. The Guardian iPad edition is simply sexy. The UI is both handsome to look at and intuitive to use.

Why the ads?. Was a great app, but the introduction of intrusive full page ads, which interfere with navigation and are completely irrelevant for non-UK readers has ruined the user experience. Given that readers are already paying for free content, the ads are frankly insulting, and I have cancelled my subscription.

Richard. Used to love this, but this update crashes all the time and is clunky. Not sure what happened but all of it bad.

Didn't think the guardian could improve!. But the iPad version is much fun and intuitive.great photo quality.

Excellent news source. By far, my favorite news source for worldwide coverage.

Wish more iPad mags and papers were like it. This is how newspapers and magazines should operate and look like on the iPad. Kudos to Guardian for their vision, and great articles!

no retina. We are almost in October and still no retina support. Shameful.

Love this app!. Contrary to what a previous reviewer says, I have had absolutely NO problem using this app on my iPad 1 with iOS5. I enjoy reading the Guardian on my iPad very much. In fact, this app is part of the reason I got back to using my iPad after letting it languish for a while. I'm not absolutely certain I'll continue to subscribe indefinitely at $13.99 a month, now that the free trial period is over, but it's certainly worth that much to those who read it every day. I'm a bit on the fence as there are lots of days when I don't have time to do so. I'll probably continue with the subscription anyway, for now. The app is that good. I really don't miss the reader comments all that much--when I have that much time to waste, I can always go to the Web site. Now that the weekend magazine is included too, this is really a pretty good deal. And cheaper than what the Brits are paying for it, if you do the currency conversion.

Weak, very weak. The Guardian web site is very good so I'm trying the IPad subscription but the difference can frustrate you and send you back to their web site in a blink.

Really well done. Like this newspaper looks good in my news sand well layed out and good to read

Subscription Problem. It has a permanent 'temporary' subscription problem!

Bugs. Management should download the phenomenal NYT app and rethink everything. At $14.00 a month this is seriously under-powered. It asks me to subscribe every day and when I try to restore my subscription it does nothing. Still getting the daily edition but this is the only news app that gets worse with each upgrade. Creates an amateurish identity for a legendary daily. Too bad.

Stinks. Subscription bug

Cannot download it from the App Store. Is there an issue?

It's not free- say it!. Now how do I cancel this before I get charged $14 a month? I tried to unsubscribe but received an unhelpful, no-reply message instead. I wish the Guardian would just say- try this app for a week. The you can choose.

Nice!. Very well thought-out and good looking interface that's easy to use; good journalism, and a couple of months of free issues. Who could ask for more?

Freezes. When I was getting the free trial, it downloaded fine. As soon as I paid for a subscription, it froze mid-download.

Guardian Daily. Why are you charging for this? There any number of free news services that have better news hi-lights. Also there is no search ability It’s very confusing I thought I was subscribing to the Guardian, this app is news lite, I don’t need to be shown hilights. Now I have get my subscription cancelled!!

Excellent App. While I can occasionally fault the content I can't fault the app.

The guardian. I can't get rid of this on my iPad. After deleting it refuses it go away . How do I get this off my pad when I open apps??? Help, please.

Buying single edition. Can you please enable us to buy single editions? Now that would be smart! Great app, thanks.

Great Read. Great interface! A pleasure to read! And a wonderful free trial! This is how it should be done!

Great paper. I love the paper, and I really like the app. 'Nuff said.

Won't load at all now. It was slow before, last 3 days won't load at all. I love the Guardian but do not have time for this. Fail.

Missing content!. Where is the technology section? This is an iPad app, your iPad readers are interested in tech!

Not even 1 free sample?. I don't get the thinking here: a free download which offers absolutely nothing without first purchasing a subscription? With no sample-issues to try? And while we can just read the paper for free in a browser?

Nice app, but looking for improvements?. It's a nice app. Be nicer if there were: -- hot research links in the articles -- crossword -- programmable font and presentation changes

Now more than ever.... The guardian is an essential news source in the era of "truthiness" and "alternate facts". The app is elegant and the subscription worth every penny.

The best. Best newspaper app of all. Best newspapers in the world

Server down. Bought a subscription, havent been able to get an issue for 2 days now, helpdesk doesnt reply.

installed, but don't see it.. might be there a problem? I just download the app and it doesn't open nor do I see it in spotlight search. where is the guardian - off duty.

Investigative Journalism. My tribute to the Guardian's investigative journalism and promotion of essentially democratic principles such as freedom of opinion and expression is to use this App and buy their newspaper!

new app really bad. subscribe to the Guardian. but not because of the new app. replaces sections with endless scrolling down- just like reading on a computer!! so read it on your computer. they have wrecked the concept of the app.

Great App. Easy to navigate - good news and commentary- everything I need to keep connected to the UK

I couldn't get the issues to download. It didn't work at all on my iPad 1 with iOS 5. The content might be wonderful, but I didn't get to look at the content. A real disappointment. :-(

Not worth it. An incomplete selection of articles. Where are the science & technology sections? Definitely not worth the money.

Wow. This is my new favorite iPad app.

It's a Bit Odd. I'm not sure what this app is *for* exactly since I can sign in via Safari. Tried it anyway, and may need improvement. I've signed in to thevapp. have a paid subscription. Why am I seeing adverts, and a 'get the app' banner? I'm in the app! Silly to the point of being absurd.

Cannot re subscribe. I had the same problem as "orphaned app". Try to re subscribe at the buttons don't do anything. Really bad considering I missed all of the Olympics. Not missing it all that much though. Better off just using the website.
