National Park Guides - Chimani Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Why Did You Change!. Really dissatisfied with the recent update. Previously it was great to be able to see what Parks you’d visited by type on one of the many map layers that you could select from.

Free trial. Not free at all. Will not let you try it out unless you have either sufficient funds on apple store for full year or credit card on file with apple

Account and renewal info hidden!. I tried to find out terms of use for renewals, etc, but the app makes this simple function impossible. Still trying to find this basic user info page after 20 mins. I don’t want to “auto-renew” as I only plan to use this app for a certain trip in 2021. So... this app lost cred with me right away.

What about people who bought previous versions?. It’s a sad you are forcing people to a subscription model. I Bought the Smoky mountain app and now it will not be supported anymore.

Such a Downgrade. Why would you take what was a good app, and turn it into this?!?! The new map is horrible and the app is much worse now in general

Chimani. Very useful,with interesting content

New Feature Is Data Usage Intensive. It’s great that this one App replaces the multiple Park Apps. One stop shop ... I like it. Yet this new feature is data usage intensive. It downloads each parks info upon request ... then promptly forgets it as it has to download the basic Apps info & unpack it once again before allowing me to choose another Park to review. In fact, if I go back to the same park, it doesn’t realize the park’s info hasn’t been updated since the last download so it downloads and unpacks the Park info again. Bottom line is that I cannot download all the parks I choose to visit & unpack them all once for a multiple-Park road trip.

Rip off. Why on earth would I pay a subscription for what is essentially a database of National Park brochures. I can download these for free on the internet.

Great app!. I’ve been using this app for many years and find it incredibly useful! There are a few little things that have been identified in other reviews, so I’m not going to repeat them. This app is well worth having and using if you frequent the National Parks - especially if you hike into the parks, beyond the parking lots and congestion. I spend a lot of time on remote trails, and some not so remote. There have been several times this app helped me find my way back after a long day on a confusing trail system. I always carry a paper map (as a backup), but there’s nothing like being able to view your location on a downloaded map of the trail system! Btw, I even carry a small solar panel to charge my phone. As with most apps, you MUST use it and familiarize yourself with it to fully benefit from its many features.

Fantastic guide app. The app was a tremendous assistance while we toured Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. Real time downloaded info and location identification made our park visits more enjoyable and less work than would have been possible with hard copy maps. Great purchase. Bought the lifetime membership to help with future park visits.

Cool app. Every time I click on Utah it goes to West Virginia. I kinda have an idea of what’s in the state, but I would also like to see what’s there and see the info of what’s in the state for any park weather it state or National.

Love this app. Even though it’s no longer a free app I still love it. To have so much info in one app is great. I had an issue where I couldn’t download any parks. I emailed the support and their email response time was almost immediate and they fixed the issue within minutes. I was very pleased and impressed.

Hiking trail view is limited. Trails are only visible when zoomed in so far one cannot get the big picture. Also it would be nice to be able to highlight individual trails since otherwise it is hard to see which trail is which when there are many intersections

Love this!. I’ve been using this app since it started and love it! I track all of my trips and have recorded my past trips, and the guides are helpful.

Trail Bro. We have used the Chimani App over the past couple of years at various National Parks with great results. We purchase a lifetime subscription and are definitely getting out monies worth.

Great app, fast, fantastic support!. I use tons of apps, but rarely do reviews, but, with such exemplary support, I have to do this review. There was a small problem with my account, caused by me, and they happily rectified it lightning quick. I love supporting worthy developers. Thanks!

What the heck happened to the links to the NPS sites?. And the stamp locations?

Provisional rating. Confiteor: my original rating with this review was 1 star. The app developer reached out in an effort to help me use the app. I am provisionally changing my original review at this time because our planned visit to Yellowstone is not until summer 2019. I am upping the rating to 5-stars for now based upon the responsiveness of the developer. I strongly believe in supporting developers for great products. ——- I am appreciative for apps which allow the interested person a trial period before deciding if they want to keep and use the app. The free trial period is very brief for this app so be advised. The developer is very responsive and interested in improving the app for the user.

Terrible upgrade. Was using this app for nearly 4 years and visited majority of the US while traveling for work. Perfect features for visiting monuments, preserves to National Parks. Absolutely loved this app. Once the new upgrade happened, it’s simple features became a hinderance. Factoring in the pay feature, they had a great system going till they messed it up. Hard to imagine messing up a mayonnaise sandwich but I guess anything is possible.

Requires subscription. I would pay a small fee but I don’t want the hassle of. Setting up a subscription and canceling etc. just make it an in app purchase and be done with it

Great App!. I recently started using the Chimani National Park app and I love it! Very helpful information and a great tool for planning trips to parks we want to visit. Wish I had known about this app years ago. Can’t wait for more state parks to be added.

I’m a huge fan of this app!. Kerry, thanks, it worked just as you said, I'm now a lifetime member. Your company has saved me tons of planning time as I've visited 20+ parks in the past 2 years and am just getting started.

Map interface. My favorite part of the original app was the way I could sort categories on a map. I could see what is in the area while I was traveling. It would also change the graphic colors on parks I have visited on the maps. This version requires me to know the name of a park before I look up the information. I hate this new version. I have been to 50 national Parks & they only appear on a list. Even worse the update no longer recognizes I paid for the guides.

Locked me out of my data. This used to be a free 5 star app. Then they changed their model to a rather expensive pay-for basis. In the meantime I have loaded years of info covering some 37 National Parks and I am now locked out of that data because they now insist I pay a fee to look at MY DATA! I’m pretty angry. Not because they need to charge money for what is a pretty good app but they didn't give me chance to get my data or give me free access to the parks I’d already been to (and provided them info on). My data made this app better but I’m locked out of it. So when did I go to the Talus Cave at Pinnacles NP, or hike Wheeler Peak at Great Basin?

Completely ruined. This was the absolute best app for tracking National Parks / Monuments etc. Then the changed the mapping data and its a giant steaming pile of hot garbage now. Sad, I really loved this app.

Not a good value. App is free and but use requires a subscription. The app was handy but didn’t provide any information that you couldn’t get from the nps website or by stopping by a ranger station/visitor center and talking to someone. Understandable development costs need to be recouped, but $30 a year is a bit much for what this app offers and not worth keeping on my phone.

Love this app!. Because I had used the free version of the app to plan our park visits, it was easy to decide to pay for the lifetime membership. The features I like most are the descriptions with photos and maps for hiking. The app also allows you to easily keep track of parks you have visited - nice if all of the National Parks are on a bucket list. Customer support is very responsive.

Please give me back the old version!. No idea how to reach you; tried app support with no luck. I have been an extremely heavy user of chimani for several years…and loved it. Now, I neeed to go through multiple steps to load the map…and there doesn’t seem to be a way to display all the park sites without you grouping them…again, anotherstep I have to go through. Please, can I have my old simple app back?

Used to be my favorite app. The “updated” version completely changed all the features that made this a fantastic app and now it’s almost useless. The previous map was great: you could sort by type of national park property (or just view them all) and easily see visited vs. unvisited sites. Yes, I’ve had communications as to how I’m supposed to still be able to do something similar, but let’s be honest, it doesn’t come even close to the functionality of the previous version. Oh so sad. I seldom use the app anymore.

Multi-park app problem. The individual national park Chimani apps are excellent and an amazing resource especially since park data can be downloaded for use when no cell service is available. The problem with this replacement all parks in one app is while you can ostensibly download the data for offline use for multiple parks you still can’t switch between the parks without service, making pre-downloading pointless for multi-park tours in areas without reliable cell service.

Won’t Regret It. This app is great for planning national park trips! I’ve used it on my last five and it always gives great tips and ideas. Download it!

It’s not my repertoire. It’s not my repertoire to give thanks and praise for good service that I expect and deserve. But in the case of Chimani I will make an exception; their service and communication is without fault, almost instantaneous; the information provided in accurate and up to date, the app the most useful of all, nothing comes even close. The yearly membership was given too me as a gift, a gift that keeps giving and giving. If your a US traveler, purchasing this app with all the benefits, services and discounts it provides is a decision you will never regret. Money well spent and wisely. Ralph, NJ, USA

Used to be unuseful, now worthless. Wouldn't store park info before. Now they charge a ridiculous fee for info that can be had for free from other sources. I have deleted this app.

Used to be awesome!. I loved using Chimani to scope out National Parks before I went, but the new app that combines all the guides is ridiculously bulky and expensive. It costs more than a lot of people pay for an annual pass to our national parks where this information is passed out for free. I get that app developers deserve to make an income, but this app is not worth $50.

Important Planning Details. We have a bucket list of over two-hundred National Parks, Monuments, and Seashores/Lakeshores. We use Chimani as one of our sources to help identify things we want to see and do. It isn’t 100% accurate, but is certainly worth reviewing whenever you need to plan a trip involving National Parks, and it gives important information about the park faster than the NPS web sites do. I just purchased the life-time subscription so we will have access to this app for the rest of our travels.

Please update parks. Why doesn’t the app show the gateway arch or Indiana Dunes as national parks yet?

What happened?. I have been using this app since it was started and now … ugh. What happened to the maps? I used to be able to hike in a park, open the map and see where I was. I have told so many lost hikers about this app, but now I can’t even find the map. What happened??

Bring back the old app!. Just like ALL the recent reviews I’m so upset they ruined one of the Best apps for national Parks. This app helped us visit 46 national Parks and now it’s trash. It completely wiped all the tracking we had in place. The map to find parks near you is gone and now they show way to much on the maps so you can’t actually find the 63 NPs. I can’t understand why they would take something so good and put out this crap. Look at your user reviews since the update they are all 1 star. Bring back the original app!!!

Map fail. Why did you screw up the map? I liked to be able to easily see which parks I had been to in an area. Bring that back!!!

Fantastic app!. I’ve had Chimani for years and bought a lifetime membership in 2018. Their customer service is outstanding! Kerry has helped me with a complicated subscription issue and worked everything out for me. I now have one account with all my info. Can’t wait to use it on our big upcoming trip!

Why change what worked?. For years this has been my go-to national park app. I even bought the lifetime subscription. Ever since the last update to “improve” their app it’s straight garbage. Please roll back to the old version until you find developers that can actually build a good UI. The current version isn’t even a beta version. Please fix this or honestly I’d like a refund on my subscription. Back to the NPS app for me.

A waste of $30. There is absolutely no redeeming feature of this app. The parks themselves provide better and more insight than this ripoff. They stole $30 from me, DO NOT let this happen to you! A complete waste of storage space.

Great app. Great app! It gives you great information, post the date you visit a park or monument and gives you a badge! We are visiting all the national parks and love this app!

Great App!. I used the app for the first time a few weeks ago while visiting Acadia NP. Being able to use the map off line with GPS location enabled was super helpful navigating the park’s carriage roads. Support was very responsive fixing a glitch with my lifetime pass purchase too. Looking forward to using this app in many more parks!

Pretty Good Tool. I like the Search function. Type in Fairy Falls and it takes you to the description page. Then tap the map icon and it shows you where on the map. Also shows your current location. What’s missing is being able to define a list of spots you want to see and have it plot a route.

Expensive. It might be a good app if you spend the $30 a year subscription, but the free app is worthless. I wish that in the description the App developer was clear about the subscription costs. Many apps have a free version that has some things, but this free version is useless The information you get is absolutely not worth the price of this subscription. All of it you could easily get online or from the literature at the entrance gate of national parks.

Great Adventures Wendy. If I want to record a past visit you can’t record multiple days at once with drag and drop…would be much easier if you could.

Crap app. This app is not user friendly. I paid for the year and I can’t figure out the trip planning. I downloaded the minimal map and the other one that was supposed to be more detailed, they were the same. This app is a waste of money.

Useless. Every time I switch to my Google Notes app to look up the date I visited a park, this app forces me to log back in and go through the process of finding the park that I was updating. So frustrating!

Not good. I am not happy at all with the new version, I will never use guides , you took away the map of the US showing each park and the ones I have already visited a different color. You would simply click on the park and would get a description and another click would take you directly to the National Park page, I wished you would change this app back , I cannot see using this app anymore

Way too costly. Sorry Devs, but some of your users, like me, might use this app for one visit to one park every 5 to 10 years. For that, your new fees are just way, way too much. One star because I can't give zero stars until you give us a more reasonable fee structure for occasional use. Your new fees are especially shocking due to the jump to that much from zero. I understand you need to make a living, but come on, this isn't the only app on my devices - if every dev whose investment was the size of yours charged that much I'd be unable to have any apps. Please consider a more reasonable fee for, say, one park for one month.

Sad. Formerly a Family Favorite. Developer decided to make guides in this app available by subscription only thus rendering pictures and information useless.

Very useful. Great apps. I have them all, though I've yet to use them while in the parks. But for now I'm using them to plan my trips. Good, quick support from the devs, too.

Love the interactive map. And the passport where you can stamp the ones you've visited

Just found this app and really like it. If you spend time in and enjoy national parks this is an excellent app. I hope that it will include lesser-known parks in the future.

Great app for National Park lovers. My wife and I love national parks and monuments and often center our vacations on them. China I allows us to do research and track our visits. We are very happy with the app.

Great App. Beautiful pictures and lots of information about each of the parks. I am using it to decided on my vacation destination this year.

Best app for National Parks. My kids are participating in the Passport program. This app has all the parks listed in it. I wish it had the locations for the cancellations listed in it since that is what you need when participating in the Passport program. Over all, the best app for National Parks that I have found.

Good App. My children and I travel to as many National Parks as we are able to travel to during holidays and vacations. This is a nice app for my iPad to keep track of where we have been and to plan where we are going next. I use this is in conjunction with the National Parks Passport app on my phone.

Memories. I love your app it reminds me of all the beautiful places and animals I have seen and all the places that I want to see... Keep up the good work

Been using for years never an issue. Been using for years never an issue

What happened?. A little confused here. So you tell me you’re moving “all content and functionality” to this App and will no longer be updating the stand alone Apps. Yet, there is no content or functionality to speak of in this app and it refers you to download the individual Apps that will “no longer be updated”. That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Nor is it true. So where is all the information going to live? Where are all the details by park? Oh, and the “Perks” thing? Yeah, no.

No 1 choice for National Park Apps. It is the most concise and smart app if you just need the clear list and basic information about all United States National Parks, Monuments, Sea Shores, battle Fields and so on. Great job!

Awesome guide. I love how this app stays up to date with new NPS locations as they are added. I have the companion app for the passport to your national parks add this app blows it out of the water. Keep up the good work!

Extremely Limited, almost useless. If I could give it 0 stars I woukd. Great concept, but exceptionally poor execution. The Trip Planning function does not allow you to select a specific park--you have to enter preferences and then the app offers you a list to choose from. I wanted to plan a trip to a specific park, but no matter what combination of preferences I entered, never once was that park offered as an option, while parks all around it were. I absolutely HATE apps that think they are smarter than me!! You can look at each park, but there is no option to plan a trip to that park from that point. You have to go back to the trip planning option, enter your "preferences", and hope that where you want to go is listed. STUPID!!!! If I know where I want to go, that is my preference, so let me choose it immediately. I am deleting this useless app, and you shouldn't bother downloading it.

Lost data and doesn't work. The app lost all my data and keeps crashing. At least it's free. Time to start looking for an app that works. I spent time checking in to national parks. All input gone. Update on June 24th, 2017 Just installed latest "fix". My old data still gone. I try to add a visit and after I press "done". App shuts down. This used to be my go to app, but now I avoid. Will try after next update.

Mgr. Great way to look ahead and make your plans. You will not be disappointed.

All the basic information. I rated this five stars because it does give you all the basic information about any park you want to know about and it's free. It's been very valuable to me as I am researching a heavily national park oriented vacation at the end of the summer. I also picked up Chimani's Yellowstone app for free when they offered it. Very useful with it's maps and points of interest.

Chimani app. App has worked well for the number of times I have used it. Accurate and reliable. Helpful in many ways.

Fun app, but learn app before leaving home. I really enjoyed learning all the information. Fun to read ahead and while there. However, I didn't find a couple important option until I returned home after traveling. Go to the map area and look at the options in the ... symbol at the top right of the map section. Note that you can download the map ahead of time and also turn on the gps. I had trouble because I didn't know to do either so I used a lot of data and couldn't use the map if I started outside a cell service area (and much of Yellowstone doesn't have service.) Also, I went through a lot of data and battery. Finally, even though I gave the app permission when I first downloaded/setup the app, it never verified my badge even though I checked in from the park locations--I now suspect I needed to also turn on the gps through the app, but this was not immediately obvious when I was using the app. Still, this app provides great facts, data, and interesting points that are fun to discover along the way. I recommend downloading it, but play and learn the settings and features before you head out on your adventure.

Still not ready for Prime Time. The concept and implementation show promise but until they can fix the constant crashes this app should remain on your "wish list." The Good: - The "passport" icons on visited sites is fun. - The ability to browse through potential new places to visit is fun. The Bad: - There is apparently no way to remove a visited passport stamp if, like me, you select the wrong year. You can select multiple years -- a nice touch for those of us who want to track each visit and not just our first or most recent, etc. But there really needs to be a way to remove a stamp. - The information provided for each park, memorial, etc is exceedingly shallow. I didn't expect the App to be a veritable Wiki of park information but I had hoped for a little more depth. The Ugly: - As I alluded in my opening sentence, this app is NOT ready for Prime Time. Even if it's the only app open, the frequency of crashes renders it unusable. For now, I've unstalled the app but I'll keep an eye on it. Once they work out the crashing issue, I'll give it a another try and see if the fun elements can outweigh the lack of real substance.

National Parks App. My wife and I travel as often as possible. Our nations National Parks are true destinations for us that preserve the beauty and grandeur of this great land. This app provides key info on each park that's so valuable! Love it, love it! Thanks to the people that created this. Great job!

Wildly inaccurate. It became painfully (literally as well as figuratively) obvious to my family today that whoever described 'Boogerman' trail in the Great Smoky Mtns park must be operating on anecdotal information collected from random drug users 500 miles away when this trail was described. A '1.5' hour trail described as "remaining fairly level for the duration of the trail" was accomplished in just over 3 hours - and we climbed severely and steadily for almost an hour and a half at the beginning of the hike. We actually worried about getting back to the trailhead before sundown - so we only stopped for a total of less than 10 minutes in 3 breaks. It's my hope that everyone using this as a hiking guide keep in mind that you get what you pay for, apparent. It's a free app. HIKE the doggone trails yourself before you describe them, please!!!

Simple and perfect!. I love the simplicity and ease of use of this app. So excited to check them all off the list!

Not bad. I like the app, it is a neat program. It does not perform well though. Every time I add a pin the program freezes and crashes. If I search too many or pull up to many locations it crashes. I like the idea of tracking my visits but it would be nice if it offered close by locations and stops. Be really nice if it didn't crash every time I used it.

National Parks.. Love all the detail in this app. It is easy to use and navigate around in. Also like having references to nearby places included.

Useful (and free!) app, especially for hiking. I have used this app successfully during visits to numerous national parks, and the information is usually accurate and helpful. I especially like the information about hiking and sites to visit. This app consolidates data from multiple different sources into one convenient place. Highly recommended.

Awesome app. Wife and I are on a 3 month road trip and are trying to hit as many national parks as possible. This app is great to help find them and links you to their site. Great!

So far so good. Been playing around with the app and I like it so far. I like how you can download maps for offline use. It's fun just scrolling through all the parks and dreaming of next trip.

Fun and easy, but missing many national monuments and trails. This is a fun app to use, it contains allot of great information. We wish they would update it.. our national monuments, parks and trails are wonderful... hurry up and update 😎 those monuments and trails

Amazing app!. I used this app during my visit to Acadia NP, I downloaded offline map, it is simply amazing that the app put every thing together! I am using this app to plan my future visits to other NPs now! Thank you for this great APP!

Worse and worse. The fact that they don't care about their users enough that they will actually wipe out all of their data on an app rewrite, with no way to recover it should be enough for the one star review. (I had been recording my visits here for years—over 100 recorded visits just gone —poof—after an update). Don't rely on this app to keep track. But wait, there's more. Incredibly buggy, has been for years. I'm still a "trekker", even w/ over 100 visits. I've only ever been to two parks where the "verified" visit works. Map is constantly freezing or randomly panning back to my geolocation when I'm looking for something else. Now it will barely zoom out at all. Pushing the "add visit" button just doesn't work 80% of the time. (I end up using a furious fast-tap just to get touch to trigger). But back to how they hate their users: Now there's a modal window imploring you to sign up for perks EVERY TIME you start the app (if you don't sign up). And worst of all, they've started adding pins for paid businesses to the parks map! I'm outta here for good.

App used to be great. First, all my old data is gone and when I try to recreate the map the app crashes. Second, I like to use the map to visually see what parks I've been to. Adding all the dollar signs just clutters things up. Can you give an option to just show the nps units?

very useful app. best app for traveling to canyons.

Worthless. I ran this app on my iPad. This app crashes so often I haven't even been able to display the map of parks or read an entry on a park. I don't think I could keep it running for longer than 30 seconds! Completely utterly worthless and it convinces me not to pay for any of their apps until these problems are fixed.

National Parks. I enjoy this App, it offers lots of information regarding places that are wonderful locations to visit. Our countries National Parks are Great places to spend your vacation days. My husband and I have visited several parks and we have enjoyed All. Thanks for this App

Needs to update. I really like this app but I have been waiting for an update forever I'm going on vacation soon a would really like an update for Christmas!

Love these Nat'l Park apps by Chimani. Yes they provide basic info but that's what is needed most of the time! So it saves me the time and trouble of a Google search for quick questions.

Great little app for the classroom. This is a great little app for the classroom. Kids appear to like clicking on all the photos and learning about the national parks.

Photo gallery is missing something. The photo gallery has some beautiful pictures. What a shame it doesn't give any information about what they are pictures of. I'd kind of like to know what I'm looking at. Also, when I click on the My Chimani button, I get a blank page. I assume I'm supposed to type things there but no keyboard will come up.

Love the app, but...... The addition of the badges is very cumbersome. Every time you add a place you previously visited, the app crashes. Also, you have to visit hundreds of national parks for you to get the second of many badges. Need more points for visiting. Very informative and worth downloading, nonetheless.

Awesome asset. I love this app - it includes locations not listed on other National Park Service apps. It's easy to use. We especially like the badge feature to keep track of visits. The pins on the map make it easy to locate smaller less well marketed venues. Very well done!

Good app. I wish when you update the national park app it would update all the other parks apps as to badges at the same time.

Impossible to unsubscribe. This app makes it impossible to unsubscribe.

Very User Friendly Design. Amazing content for a free app! The interface is fairly intuitive and it helps with the decision making process of planning a trip.

Nice but hard to search. I've been using this app during my current visit to a NP. The idea behind it is nice, and the information is useful (not always up-to-date but all right in 90% of cases). The issue the could be addressed in future versions refers to the individual park apps and interaction with the main app: namely none. If I have a verified visit to an attraction in a park, shouldn't I get automatically a verified visit to the park as a whole? Overall nice!

Retired. I rate this app a 5 star and I hope to use it this coming season as we travel in our motor home. I got a lot of useful information from this app that we're going to put to use when we're on the road.

Great resourse. I'm a history buff and love the sections for Historical Parks and Battlefields Great resource. Can't wait to use it on my next trip.

Bring back the red pins for visited sites. Over 230 visits gone since the previous 2 updates. I sent a message to Chimani and received emails from Kerry Gallivan saying an update will come out that will bring back my visits but that hasn't happened in the last several months. Also, I cannot add those visits as the app now crashes when I try. Reducing rating to 1 star until fixed. I previously rated this 5 stars.

Nearly Great .... Crashes on me while using an iPod Touch 8.0.2 when trying to go to settings, also need to bring back? ability to edit dates. Thanks for a nearly great product.

No longer a 5 star app. I have used this app for many years. Flagging all the places I have been. New updates have since deleted all my visited parks flags. Too many for me to input again. No visual reference on the map for places I have been. I used to use this app all the time to plan trips because I could see where I had been. No longer. My info is gone in the new updates. Now I have to create a log in to save places I have visited. Will not be doing so. Some of us still don’t use Social Media and I really don't want don't see why you need my email address. Time to look for a new app.

Like the idea... stops working and crashes. I travel a lot and wanted to track of all the places I visited as well as find new places. The map is good. I put cluster on but does it cluster. I added several places I visited but they did not save. If it does not ask you for the date visited it will not save. I kill the app so I can restart so I get the question. Before I started doing that the app would crash on it own. Would like to see a map of just my visited places.

Wonderful app. The only things that could make it better would be being able to zoom out more on the map and having state parks be on it as well. Otherwise I love it
