User Reviews:

“I survived my first year of music theory with this, and am still constantly using it this year as well. It is nicely customizable and easy to use. There's a lot of material is covers. I absolutely love the ear training. It has been invaluable. Looks nice, too! This is the app to buy for Music Theory class.” – Whitney Huskey

“I love this app. It also has some challenging ear training exercises. I have bought a lot of music theory apps and this one is my favorite for theory” – Hadrian7

Beginners quickly become Pros
Users who are just learning music will be able to practice naming notes on the piano and on the staff.

Sharpen your ears
The ear training section provides many challenges for the more advanced student. It takes a sharp ear to identify altered dominant chords and modal scales quickly. For jazz musicians we’ve included the modes from the melodic minor scale and all kinds of extended chords. There is even a tempo quiz to identify beats per minute by assigning a number to a click track.

Increase your skills by competing with others
Various exercises propel you to higher scores, which you can post to compete for top ratings. Who will be #1 in the world this month? Could be you!

“This app is great. I have gone from having absolutely no knowledge in Music Theory, to doing very well in all of the categories the app offers. Thank you very much for helping me learn Theory finally and making it fun.” – whoisjk

FIX THIS!!!. The sound for the ear training is not working! I'm sure this is a fantastic app, but unfortunately the ear training sound isn't working, which is kind of a big deal when learning music theory. Fix this immediately and I'm sure the app is golden!

Volume and Landscape view. While the app and idea is fantastic, the program does have some upgrades that would improve the program. One the program opens in a landscape view on phone and does not rotate to portrait view. That upgrade would be beneficial just for increased functionality. Second, the volume does come out very low on the phone and can not seem to find a way to improve that.

Wonderful app, but has some flaws. As much as I miss the older version just a tad bit, the app is still nice for me to use to practice and enhance my knowledge of scales, chords, key signatures, and other necessities when it comes to music theory. The only thing that I would suggest to improve this app would be in the Ear Training section for the scales;I would really love that section more if it went up and down the scale instead of just going up and not even hitting the octave, like in previous versions. Going up and down the scale made it easier to identify it. It's a lot harder to identify if you just hear it going up and only up. Also the fact that the information button is gone in the sections now; there is no separate section anymore that explains anything, like in previous versions, they had a little question mark icon that explained how to read notes, or how to recognize a major from a minor, etc. I feel that by removing that, beginner musicians would have quite a bit of trouble understanding some of the music theory involved in this useful app. As a high school musician that has a lot of experience with music and is involved in many of the music programs at my school, I would definitely recommend downloading this app if you need help learning to read notes, recognize key signatures, and much, much more.

Oh no, had to lower my review again. Please get the leaderboards working again. It would be very fun and would give me higher goals of accuracy and speed to strive for. The prompt to buy MTPro is annoying. I downloaded the app and it is very boring and obvious to any basically trained musician. I just want to practice my ear training and I want it to go smoothly and uninterrupted. You don’t need to remind me to buy the other frankly lame app. I’m trying to speed test my ear and I’m gonna miss answers. That’s the way it is when you are first learning. I’m probably rambling to nothing though since this App hasn’t been updated in a while, and that’s just another reason to avoid spending money on an app no one wants to improve.

Buggy. No sound on ear intervals, scales, or tempo. Only sound on chords.

Love it. This is simple but intense. I'm learning and getting faster! On Ear Training, I wish the applause would stop when the next round starts. Also wish, when it shows the "right" answer and takes a moment to flash it, there was a way to learn from the mistake by hearing it again or for chords or simultaneous intervals hearing it broken down by notes.

Great preference selection. Whew! After rolling the dice on several similar apps, and finding that the developers wanted piccolo players to learn bass clef, (why not Chinese and Sanskrit too?), I found this app. Covers every aspect of music, and allows control of preferences. X bass clef, in my case. Try this one first. Only annoyance ... Posting score is of no use or help to me. Wastes my priceless time. I'd like to loop back in instantly for another go. Not get social. I compete against myself...healthier.

Please fix volume issue. Any updates on getting the volume for the interval training to be the same as the chord training? Interval training is very faint, even on full sound

Good app for beginners.. If you're just learning, then this app can aid the process; but I also feel as though the app is useless to (as worded by the description) "pros," and I use that word very loosely. As a more advanced musician, I was hoping for a higher difficulty in the knowledge tested. The app IS titled "Music Theory." I feel as though ear training has enough information and practice to be looked at as an individual but interactive concept to music theory and should approached in a companion app of some sort, or separate theory from aural skills in the app itself. I was hoping to see things such as passing tones, retrograde, neopolitan, borrowed chords, cadences, and so on and so forth. As I am no longer a student, I find it very necessary to constantly keep myself under healthy studies without the institutional emphasis on such things to keep skills sharp, and reading that a professor of music had designed this app, I thought maybe I could stay in good practice regardless of location with my phone but was vastly disappointed. But, in favor of this app, it does offer good practice for very basic beginners, and I would suggest this to anymore with very minimal knowledge and would like to keep in good practice.

Excellent !. This program is fabulous. I majored in Theory/Composition many years ago and was thrilled to find this App. It allows me to maintain and improve my musical skills. I use the ear-training section all the time. There is a slight problem with the ear-training part, though. Sometimes the audio stops when identifying intervals. I'm sure this will be addressed. Even with this glitch, I'm giving it 5 stars. Every musician, who wants to remain competent, needs this App.

Could've been done better!. 1. I have to agree with some who have said that this app should teach & explain the skills & concepts that it's testing on. Otherwise this app is only useful to those who already know basic theory or who are studying it in school, lessons etc. A little snobbish if u ask me. 2. The note reading exercises are a joke. Why the keyboard when you can't adjust the position of the keys. I mean the note F for ex. is shown on different places on the staff, treble & bass clef, but you only have the one same F on the keyboard to play it on. Sight-reading isn't just about what, it's about where too. Hello! Basically this is an app for people who already understand music theory and want to make themselves feel smarter by going through drills that they already know the answers too.

THIS IS TOO FUN!. Ok... I like to sing and I pretty much know the notes and all, the treble clef anyway, but until now the rest was pure pig-latin to me. I've always wanted to know more about vocal harmonies and what makes them work so beautifully together, but frankly, I was intimidated. Now I'm not. I'm excited about learning and having fun at the same time. This makes sense to me now and I'm making progress, even at my age. I am actually learning this stuff now, I'm excited, and I'm hooked! THIS IS TOO FUN!

Psychology major. Wow. This is fun. I am just starting to learn music and this application is helping me sooooo much. I sort of stumbled onto it, looking for something that would help me with the theory stuff. The notes and stuff. A lot is more complex than I can understand yet, but I have learned a lot in just a couple days. It is so handy to just be able to pull it out during lunch or whatever and makes learning and studying fun. If you want to learn music, I can tell you this puts it in an easy way to understand.

Cool app, but needs a fix. I have used this app on and off for years, and it really is a lot of fun and very useful. However, on my iPhone X, the volume in the intervals and tempo ear training isn’t working properly. The volume doesn’t respond to the controls on the phone, and it is nearly imperceptibly quite... note: if you have this problem on your phone... remember to turn the volume down before you switch to the chord ear training... volume works just great there!!!! Please fix! I really like this app, and i would love to be able to use it again.

Great App for beginner student. I am a beginner piano student and this app is my favorite for music theory study when I am not at my piano. I have tried many do-it-yourself methods for learning piano and music theory. This is BY FAR the best I've seen. As a beginner I cannot do all the lessons perfectly, but it compliments my study with my piano teacher very well. Any musician you talk to will tell you to study with the best teacher you can. I have an excellent teacher who is both classically trained and a working jazz pianist. This app compliments my study with her and allows me to work on my music theory at my level. The interface is intuitive and efficient. I have my iphone with me everywhere I go and I can study music theory any time of the day or night. I have spent many many times more than the cost for this app looking for something like this and I am writing this review because I know anyone who buys this app and is serious about music theory will absolutely love it ! DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND JUST BUY IT AND YOU WON'T REGRET IT. I have never met Dr. Joel Clifft but all I can say is THANK YOU Dr. Clifft for taking to the time to develop such a wonderful and helpful app.

Was awesome! Until. So this app is very well designed and has been helping me a lot with learning my music theory faster, but since I switched to iPhone 6 I'm not able to switch the settings in the app, for example, somehow I was able to switch to bass clef and then wanted to switch back to trouble clef but now it does not let me switch. Please update and fix this bug I do really like this app and would have given 5 stars!

Broken listening section. I would recommend a different app if you want to do ear training. That functionality regularly breaks

Good idea but it does not work well. I can’t hear the ear trening

App is broken. This app was usable a few years ago. Now it stops functioning after a few times thru the chird recognition exercise. No one maintains it.

MT Prof. So I really like this app. But it appears this is a problem that needs fixing for many as I did not type anything in quotations and it appeared as I went to write a review... "Please fix.. I lost sound to intervals and tempos in the ear training section... and after every question I answer there is an ask to go to MT Prof. Which isn't even available in the iTunes Store. Please fix!"

Would be great if it were a little more fun. One star because I have been waiting for an update for a year. I love this app. But I am not motivated to use it much. It could be so much more. How about levels and progress charts and achievement records? How about a visual map to show progress like on some of the addicting iPad games? What makes Candy crush so addicting? It's the levels and visual sense of progress. Also, this app has so much more potential... Chord inversions, chord progressions, relative pitch, perfect pitch, key/chord relationships, instrument (timbre) recognition, texture identification.... Add some of these ideas and make it fun / addicting to play and you'll be my favorite app.

Well done!!. This app is fantastic and I am getting better at a number of different activities inside the app. (Intervals, chord recognition ear training, etc.) it's simple and easy to use. The one thing I would like however is to be able to select how many questions an activity will ask. I.E you can choose 10, 20 or 200. It would be nice to have 50 or something in between.

Latest update hard to see. Too small.. At the risk of sounding like an old man (39) the staff is now too small. Mostly the accidental within the staff are tough to make out clearly. This was never an issue before. I think you sacrificed function for style. Also, since the latest update, the sound during ear training comes out the speaker of my phone even while plugged in to my headphones. No other app on my phone has this issue. No more private ear training on my daily commute to work. Still a great app but may have slipped a bit backwards.

Favorite Music App. This is the best music training app I have found - both for reading/theory and ear training. Sounds are good, theory is solid, interface is user-friendly. Tempo training section is a great bonus Help files are limited but explain the concepts well. If you have no experience with music you may have to practice at it but the information is there. Love the game aspect - beat other users time and accuracy. Good customer support - developer told me he is working on a desktop version with a slew of jazz chords and scales This app has already made me a better musician - good training from a music professor for $1. How can you beat that?

Love the app. This is an excellent learning tool. My theory improves every time I use this device. Something that is difficult for me is in the ear training section. When the answer is showing the new interval or chord is playing. It would be helpful to have a pause or a repeat with the answer showing before moving on, especially when I'm wrong.

Update Needed. Volume problems.. I know the Ringer has to be turned on (which should be fixed) but when you do ear training the scales vs the chords volume mix are painful extremes. This is a good app.. could be a GREAT app that would be something I would pay for if it was overall cleaner/balanced for our new devices

Lovely app most of the time. Lovely app most of the time, but currently there is an audio issue with the intervals. Other sections play fine, but intervals will not sound even with the volume turned to maximum. My students are all having the same issues with it.

Awesome app but..... The ear training only works with chords, and not intervals, scales or tempo Otherwise an excellent app and a fun way to stay sharp musically!

Amazing Theory App!. This app is by far the best iPad/iPhone app I've worked with. There are others like Music Tutor but it's only limited to just note naming. Music Theory Pro is just like the name says, it's a pro at aiming towards teaching theory without a headache. Provides a fun challenging way to learn all the aspects of theory. You've got everything from note naming, to chord naming and ear training. And it's all broken down step by step so that once you master note naming, you can move on to key signature naming. Just the best app in my opinion and I highly recommend downloading it. Can't wait for the midi compatibility for the Mac version! Thank you!!

Good job. This is a great app! I have experienced no problems with it and it is fun and easy to use! I have learned so much! Great app!

Needs a fix!. This games volume isn’t working properly. I only get sounds on the chords. Please update and fix!

Just wondering. The app is great, I just don't understand how the global scores work. There are people in the millions plus range and I can only get in the 100 thousands point range on the 100 question test. But i remember on the old version, you used to be able to go up to 500 questions. Is it because those people are still using the old version where you can go up to 500 questions?

Accountability Helper. I’ve used this app for nearly 8 years and it’s a staple with my students. It great for increasing their speed and recognition of notes, intervals, scales, keys and sounds. It makes it very easy to set goals for your students (recognize all complex intervals 100% in less than 15s). They then screen shot it and text it to you for tests.

Usually fantastic app...but recently..... But recently some of the ear training features aren't working properly on my iPhone 6s. The rhythm, intervals, and scales sounds aren't playing. I mean you can hit the play button and it recognizes the 3 times you can hit it. But there is no sound. The chords section works just fine. It's only the tempos, intervals, and scales that don't work. HALP!!

good. only thing is that tempo interval and scale eartraining doesnt work so fix that please thank you

Great Theory App!!!!. This app by Dr. Joel Clifft is very good and full of spot on representation of music theory and intervalic education. I like the way it is so neatly laid out and organized to fit all of one's musical needs. If you spend a half-hour to an hour on this app per day, you will become by far the most solid musician in whatever ensemble you take part in. I HIGHLY recommend spending the .99 cents to get this app. Totally worth it in every stretch of the means. There are a few other theory apps out there but if you want solid ear training and professional musicianship as part of your repertoire, then MUSIC THEORY PRO IS FOR YOU! =)

Awesome app!. I NEVER waste my time writing reviews, even for apps that I love, but I was so pleased with this app that I needed to share. This app can benefit any musician at any skill or knowledge level. Perfect alternative to playing pointless games. Why waste your time throwing a simulated paper ball into a trash can when you can be practicing your music theory?! I've been out of school for a while now and after one day of owning this app, I'm relearning things that I've forgotten years ago. I mainly use it for the ear training, which can never get old, but it is also highly beneficial for students just entering the world of music theory. Great job on this app! Great buy!

Very, very good for review. As a musician who was formally a music major (before switching), this app works very well as a refresher and trainer. I've had a couple of theory courses, so this is perfect for me. If you are new to theory, this will do only ok for you, but you'll probably want a book or website or another app to explain what all the symbols mean. If they incorporate that idea into this app - then it would be really great! Either way, download it!

Yessss!!!. I am an alum of USC's Jazz Studies program, and am proud a fellow Trojan made this app! I use it with my sax students all the time. I especially love the ear training tempo section... I'm trying to become less dependent on drummers when counting off tunes! As a suggestion... Maybe you could do a random rhythm and/or melodic sight reading section... Like where an audio clip plays a short (1 or 2 bar?) passage, and you have to pick the correct multiple choice notation and/or rhythm that was played over audio. That could be cool. It could even extend to 3 or 4 bars! Also, you could do a "Simon Says" sort of section, where the app plays 3 notes, then you play it back plus 3, then it plays back your 6 notes and adds three, then you have to play back it's 9 notes plus three, etc. That always really helped my ears. You could even get a microphone algorithm so that people could sing into the mic instead of using the piano, or a sax player like myself could play into it. Also, I would totally pay for extra content if it were reasonably priced, an truly worth the money! So many possibilities, keep up the good work!

Great app and lots of fun, but there is room to improve. I have to say that this is probably the best application of its sort. It's so simple, but it's exactly what I want. I can practice identifying chords and intervals by ear, reading notes in different clefs, read key signatures, and much more! I would like to see some changes in the next version though. 1. Add tenor clef. Right now, there is only treble and bass clef. Although tenor clef is less common, I think it would be very useful to have it as well. 2. Add more instruments that we can use to identify music with. Right now, we can only use the piano. I think it would be fun to add the guitar and the violin and other instruments. Overall, teriffic app but please consider my suggestions!

Learn in a fun an easy way!. Thank you for creating such an app to practice for my music theory! You do have to know a few things before hand but this app is here only to improve what you know and to get quick at it. The only thing is the UI is not the cleanest and it's missing a feedback for ppl to help develop this app even more. Thank you developers for bringing this to the store!!!

Great but a bit easy. I started using this app to help with my music theory but after a few weeks it started being repetitive and I didn’t even need to think on what the answer was. It helped me so much but sooner or later I won’t be progressing quickly and in the it will be the app I end up using but it is not helping me.

Great way to drill yourself!. Great app for reinforcing your skills. I've been using it to practice key signatures and it's been very helpful. One small issue is that occasionally the correct answer will be dimmed-out and unpressable...forcing you to choose an incorrect answer. Not really a big deal. I definitely recommend this app for any serious musician.

Effective, really improves your skills!. Such a great value for this app! I love the ear training that's included and it has given me some nice challenges. WIth the options to make the exercises more difficult, I see myself getting quicker at them each time. If you need to review, the Help button gives a concise explanation with examples whether you're just in need of a reminder or even if you don't know the concept too well. This app is effective and kind of addicting while keeping your skills sharp and the competition aspect is good fun too!

Ok. The sound of the intervals are not working in the new version :(

Excellent application - a must have for any serious musician!. What a great idea Joel Clifft had to bring this application to the iPhone - a fun and interesting way to brush up on your music theory skills and perhaps learn something new as well. I look forward to more practical applications to improve my musicianship in the near future! Thanks!

Music Theory Pro. I really enjoy this app. I'm an amateur musician and a member if a community band. I am also a shift worker and it's difficult to find time to practice my horn let alone study music theory. With this app, I can sharpen basic music theory skills anytime or anywhere. The chord recognition exercises are particularly helpful. If you love music and want to improve your skills, stop wasting your time with games and get this app. You can't beat the 99¢ investment.

pretty good for quick drills. Karajan was my go-to theory trainer but this has taken its place (at least for drills that involve staff reading). I wish the difficulty settings involved more than adding to the number of questions and turning types of chords on and off. It would be great if the note drills required you to read more ledger lines as well...I could really use some help with that.

Doesn’t work on iPad Pro. Ear training does not work on iPad Pro at all. There is no ringer switch on this device so that does not fix it. Only the chord section works. Considering I just spent a decent amount to purchase the app, I would really like for this to work. I’ve tried everything in the settings already.

Ear training notes?. You have your training but without training on specific tones? I bought this to try out for my students but my students are all kids and this is not a kid friendly app and I would really appreciate my money back because even as an adult player this application is not intuitive. I’m pretty unhappy with the money I spent.

Brilliant. Great app. Would like to see this continue to be developed and expanded.

Good ap. Great app simple yet efficient tools and options

Not bad. Musicopoulos is my preferred app. Does everything this does plus more.

Moo. Mooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Zulmy. Whhhhhhy isn’t the sound working ?

The best!. This app is an absolute godsend. As a teaching tool it has no peer. My students love using it and learn more about music theory in a few minutes than in a whole year of classroom music. As a personal ear training tool it's bang on! Great support too from its creator, who really backs his work. Buy this App!

Best music theory app. This is by far the best music/ear training theory practice app I've found on the App Store, having used it for quite a few versions now. The perfect companion to any studying musician or anyone simply wanting to improve their ears (everyone). It has improved considerably over time, and it really does help. Before using this app, my listening tests were the most daunting exam, now they're a piece of cake. Not only that, I can transcribe songs a lot quicker, and the speed that I can improvise (and write without an instrument) has improved too. Very glad I found this app.

Major issues need to be fixed. Besides chords, the sound doesn’t work for ear training.

Small fix needed. This app has been very helpful... after the additional app was released (which I paid for to show support) an annoying message keeps coming up every time I get something wrong doing aural testing - suggesting I try the other app. This is exceptionally frustrating as I don’t want to be interrupted. Please fix and I will love this app again!!

Great app!. As a music student, use it very often. Love that there are so many options to customise the exercises. It's a very practical app as it's equal parts ear training and sight-reading - which allows me to put theory into practice. Highly recommended.

Nothing for a beginner. I was looking for something to learn as a biginner! This is for pro. No basic training before asking questions

Work in progress. Fun drills but I wish one could disable the cheering sound as it seems to go forever and drowns out the start of the next drill...

Great!. A great app in my opinion. I am a complete music theory novice, when I downloaded this app all I knew was how to read (piano) music. It's great to have these exercises in my pocket, can repeat them several times a day whenever have a few mins. A few suggestions though: - I agree with a previous rater about the problems with the limited keyboard in note recognition exercise. I'm using it to improve sight reading, and when trying to go quickly it's off-putting to have to press a key almost an octave lower than the previous one when the written note is 1 half step higher than previous. - also, it would be helpful to me in learning intervals to have a version in which the starting note and interval name were provided, and I had to select the note corresponding to that interval (eg shows note 'C' and 'min3' and up to me to choose the correct note - Eb). - also as someone else said, once I realised that the key signature buttons always stayed in same spot, and that each 'spot' always corresponded to a particular number of #'s/b's, it became very hard to bother working out the correct answer, when I know which 'button' is right just based off no of items in key signature. All in all though, very useful to me as a beginner :)

Volume error iPad. Hi great app but there is something wrong with the volume on my iPad Pro, it’s very quiet and when I increase the volume it just gets quieter.

maybe a little disappointing. I have a class set of ipads and was hoping to use this with Year 7 & 8 high school students - it assumes a bit too much knowledge without sufficient explanation - and the one octave keyboard does not give a realistic sense of high/low pitch for young musicians - I will still give it a try . . . but . . . it is really an app for knowledge testing of advanced students. (Maybe this should be clearly explained in the app notes). Nevertheless, a good app.

Great. Great app for those starting to get a handle on music theory.

Great app!. Perfect app for aural training and learning to sight read music.

Brilliant app worth every penny.. Great to use and learn, the question mark helps you understand the exercise and gives more insight to music theorythank you music theory pro!!

Best I’ve found, couple of errors tho.. Best app I’ve tried so far for people who already have competent theory knowledge and just need some maintenance. 1 or two annoying bugs.

Great app. It's truly helped me improve my sight reading and pitch Fantastic app - worth getting

Good start, needs inversions. I have been using this app to help revise for music aural exams. It would be great if the ear training chords had inversions!

Feels half done. It's a good app and will help my jazz development. I am however disappointed with some aspects of this app. The key signature game is just a counting game. Making it harder could include randomizing the key signature positions. I thought if it were to cater for pro musicians there would be higher tier interval training available. Yes it does do intervals quite well but with no extensions it halts my progress and makes me want to look at other apps with this ability. Tetra chords would also be a nice feature. It seams that the difference between the levels is quite large. I would not mind paying more for these features. Maybe a total pro version for 5 to 10 would be great. I am a music student wanting to expand and test my knowledge on the go. I will use this app but if I could get a refund I would

Can the ovation. I like everything about this except the loud, annoying applause. Please let us toggle it away.

Issues and bugs. The settings are not able to be changed besides the on/off sliders, and when you get a question wrong it doesn't give you the right answer all the time. It would be nice if you added video lessons on the topics the games quiz you on. For example a lesson on key signatures or a lesson on intervals, etc.

Great way to stay sharp. If your a guitarist who have already studied theory or studying it now than this is the app for you. I think that there should be what each note sound like in ear training.

Seems good. Can't hurt; that's for sure.

Music teacher. Great app, can u add timing?

No sound at all. I downloaded this app for a music class I am taking in school. You can’t even hear what it’s quizzing you on? COMPLETE waste of money. Would NOT recommend.

The best music theory app available!. This is by far the best music theory app available. For the same price that you would pay for a note trainer app or an interval trainer app you get it all. Learn: - note names on the staff and the keyboard - major and minor key signatures - intervals - chords - ear training for tempos, intervals, scales & chords The app works great and the author responds quickly to questions / feedback. Update: unfortunately it looks like this app has been abandoned - still works but I don't think any of the suggested updates are going to happen.

Great!. This App is great, if you get an answer wrong, it provides the correct answer right away. The only drawback for me is that it's better for students who actually know the answers, than it is for those learning. An improvement would be to introduce the material without the test, go over wrong answers at the end. Still by far the best App of this kind anywhere! It allows you to limit the questions and even the variety.

Monotone teaching style. I know it's just a buck, but it's my buck. I wanted to learn theory. If you are a beginner and do not already know notes then this is not for you. If you don't mind droning repetition as a means to learn through incessant trial and error then this app is for you. This is really geared towards those who have the knowledge already and just want practice.

Best one. I have tried many music training apps, but this one is by far the best, and at a great price too.

Very good app. This is a very well designed app, and it is hard to see how anyone interested in learning music will regret spending $1. I've used it in the last weeks to learn more about scales, and it is a perfect match with atheory book, as you can hear the scales, practice and ge more information. A few suggestions for an update: either remove the ovation when the score is high, or allow users to remove it, gets boring and distracting after a while. Also for the ear training section, what about repeating the scale when the answer was wrong and then playing the right one? Even a graphic sample of both wrong/right answers would be very helpful. It would also be great to have samples of music where the different scales are used. Maybe a link to a website with more in-depht info? Great work!

This is a training app. No theory, just testing. Great if you know the material. Useless if you don't.

Ear training sound. The sound for the ear training doesn't work. It used to. Please fix

Sizing Issues. Seems like since the last update that the screen size doesn't adjust to an iPhone anymore and the program is not usable anymore because some of the buttons are off the screen.

Sound does not work. Oh the irony. You cannot hear the notes or chords being played that the app is quizzing you on. What a huge embarrassing failure. No one is fixing this app either, yet they continue to sell it despite the warnings of the problems I encountered. Some are nearly 3 years old!!! Garbage.

A good app. Easy and effective

Awesome. Really helpful for keeping up with theory in school. Thank you!

It's a tester, not a teacher. There isn't any instruction or reasons. Just questions and answers. If you don't know theory then this is not for you. Good for intermediate and up or as a supplement to learning music theory elsewhere.

Why does it have advertisements for your other apps when I paid money for this one?. Why does an app I paid money for have a constant popup advertisement for your MusicProf app? This is annoying and unprofessional. Not to mention that this is the only app on the App Store that can’t figure out how to get sound without turning the ringer on. The sound is broken because you are bad at programming, not because your users are too dumb to turn the ringer on. Unacceptable quality.

Awesome. Fantastic for anyone at any level. I use this app everyday!!

My one stop theory resource. No more bulky books, no more having to make my own interval recordings, no more fishing around for online theory trainers that never work well. As I've been prepping for university theory classes this fall, this app has turned into my best friend. It's laid out so nicely. There's no fumbling around to do what I want to do. When I had a question the designer answered me within an hour. Value like this is hard to come by!!!

Sight sing. I love this app. I have used it every day since I bought it for a measly dollar. I want to learn sight singing and this is the best tool I have found yet. I agree that the applause is distracting.

Good for testing, not teaching. This app has some very useful features for testing what you already know about music theory. However there are no lessons to actually teach you about music theory. You can learn by virtue of trial and error when answering the test-your-knowledge questions, but that is very frustrating and ineffective. This app is for the person who has already has a strong music theory foundation. It is not that useful for those hoping to build a foundation.

Dont update. the last update is no working, at least on my iphone 4gs...,

Great for learning. Don't force leader boards.. This is a great app for learning key signatures, intervals, etc. It's attractive and functional. Unfortunately, once you've gone through a drill it essentially forces you to post your name and score to leaderboards. I'm motivated by learning. I have no desire to publish my scores, win piddly condescending badges, or be listed on leaderboards full of people who don't have the motivation to learn because they want skill. Give me an option to turn off gamification and I'll go for five stars.

great way to practice!. All of us could use a little more ear training. I teach composition at a university, and our faculty have been using this app, challenging each other to beat our high scores. If you want to sharpen your skills, no matter what your level, this is the way to do it.

Great. This is a great app. I've learned so much with it. I'm a bass clef reader and i know how to read treble clef too, but now i can read it faster. This is a great app, but what would make it amazing is if it had note identification ear training, and chords, such as how an E major chord sounds instead of jus major, minor, etc.

Perfect balance between theory and practice. I love this app. It also has some challenging ear training exercises. I have bought a lot of music theory apps and this one is my favorite for theory.

Older was better. I used to LOVE this app, I use the ear training all the time. I do not however like the update. I do not like that the app is now landscape so you have to scroll for everything, and I especially do not like that I am asked to buy the jazz add-on every time I open something. This is a paid app, I should not be asked to buy something while using it.

Better before. Though the format of the app has visually improved it has lost it's value by getting rid of the music theory review. Before, the app had review inside the app which was very useful for a quick review but now, one must go to the website and watch videos. PLEASE BRING BACK THE REVIEW IN THE APP. It's much more convenient and helpful.

Great idea poorly executed. The best training helps you build from unskilled through intermediate level. This app is little more than audio flash cards. It's hard to imagine the audience for this app. Skilled musicians will find it too simple. Beginners will not find the step-by-step training they would benefit from. Save your $.99.

Highly recommended!!!. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have had an interval breakthrough using this app. The help section was written so clearly. I finally "get it". Developers, you have made me very happy. Highly recommended!

...not for beginners...BUT.... ...this is a great tool for people currently taking theory. I'm taking music theory, and I find it very useful for memorizing key signatures and stuff. Now, if you're looking for an app to teach you theory...stop being lazy and TAKE SOME CLASSES!!!!! If you're looking for a tool to help supplement your current courses, get this app!

Simple, but VERY effective!. This is a must for any musician's toolbox! I didn't realize how out-of-practice I had become with the basics. Looking forward to this app to keep me sharp.

Not worth it!. If you already know everything about music and the notation system, this app provides a good practice session. But if you are trying to learn anything new this app is useless. It is a series of quizzes/ questions. It does not teach you anything new. You do something out of ignorance and it tells you whether you are right or wrong. 99% chance is that you are wrong. Where is the learning? If you are a pro, this is perhaps five stars, otherwise it does not deserve even one.

Great app. Super fun to play when bored and super addicting!! Wish it could keep a personal best score to track progress but other than that I like it.

Best of the basic theory apps. I've tried many of the theory apps. This one is my favorite. Great for beginners or intermediate musicians. Quiz your intervals, or other basics with ease. Yes, it could use more depth, sure, but for an app, this is great. Thanks!

Music Theory Pro. It's called Music Theory PRO, not music theory LEARN. So yes, you should have a basic understanding of theory to benefit from this app. If you do have an understanding of theory, this is a GREAT practice and exercise tool, and a great value at 99 cents. One small thing that I don't like is the constant "BRAVO!" and "KEEP GOING!" cheer messages that appear on the screen every time you get a question right. An option to turn that off would be great. Same goes for the applause sounds. Cute, but annoying after a while. I've also noticed that the sound dies off sometimes in the middle of an exercise for no apparent reason.

Music Theory Pro. This app is great. I have gone from having absolutely no knowledge in Music Theory, to doing very well in all of the categories the app offers. Thank you very much for helping me learn Theory finally and making it fun.

Wish it had a "sing scale/chords" module. This is a great app. Within minutes I felt I've gotten back on track with my ear training. Only things missing is real music theory like harmonizing exercises and perhaps "sing this scale from this note". Hoping it will come in an update.

Awesome app!! Love it!. I am working on my ear training every day while commuting to work. This app has become the main tool I am using. It's definitely worth the money it costs

Chords. On many of the jazz chords, the piano sample does not match the chord shown. This would be for 9th intervals and higher from what I've noticed, potentially more. Sometimes it sounds like more than one audio sample being played at the same time... But it's definitely and obviously not what's notated.

Boring. I've only taken 1 semester of music theory and this app is boring to me. The answers for the key signatures are in the order of the circle of fifths, so you don't really have to know the answer. I can read music so I obviously don't need the note name section, the only useful part is probably the ear training.

Great Study Tool!. This app is so helpful! It helps me work on these skills that will make me a better musician. I can still get great practice time in without my instrument. I can sharpen my skills on the bus, waiting for coffee, and in between classes. Last minute cram... Perfect!!!

just a flash card for music theory. Alas, not a teaching tool; more a flash card set for students, to my dismay. Of course, I could have checked the reviews and read between the lines to discover it so. So worth $1, which is less than a 'Starbucks', but perhaps it could have been free.

Excellent for new theory students. This app will help you get caught up on things that might be a struggle in your Theory I studies. Has EVERYTHING you need and all levels of direction. Scales, intervals, note identification, chording--classical, jazz, orchestral--major and minor--even ear training exercises. It helped IMMENSELY with my grades. It's a MUST HAVE APP!!

Problems I have. The new graphics interface isn't appealing. It looks childish. It USED to look elegant and professional. And I paid for this app, IF I want to make an in-app purchase I shouldn't be asked every time I want to use this app. And the biggest problem is I need a refresher of what's what from time to time and a little information about whatever I'm trying to learn about world be nice.

Good Musical Alternative to Gaming. This is a great alternative to gaming because it allows me to spend my time on something useful and interesting. There are only so many zombies I can kill in one day before I need a little education. Also, this is a portable and can be a quiet way to practice music when I am not around an instrument.

Practiced for 5 months. I've been through three versions. The current is the best. 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week. My music theory comprehension and speed, has improved greatly!! I only wish this version retained the timed aspect of the previous version. Being timed improves reaction for instrumentation purposes and allows you to measure improvement.

super app. Just reopened this app after a while. Very nice after this last update. Neat interface and nice layout. Thought went into it. Well done.

Great for ear training; especially intervals and chords. If you need practice distinguishing a minor third from a major sixth, or differentiating between an augmented 7th and a diminished one, then this app is for you. You know who you are.

The best app of its kind. I've been searching for the most music pro app and this one is on top of the rest. If you're interested in 13th and more this is the app.

Addicting practice tool. Comprehensive basic theory/ ear training drills. Great user interface: clean look, easy to understand drills and easy facebook posting tools. Help sections in each category give well-written intros/refreshers to each skill. The tempo learning is a nice unexpected touch! Highly recommend.

A lot packed into this app. just the Note Names alone would be worth the price. To get a complete Ear Training course, Chord study, and more on top of it is unreal. The competition games are addicting and really do help develop skills as advertised.

Awesome app. I am a jazz guitar player and fall into the stereotype of the guitarist who can't read music and this app continues to help me prove pianists and horn players wrong. Just change the icon name. It's too long.

Love this app!. This is my favorite game. Granted, I'm a music major, but I just love tightening up my skills and trying to beat others! I do not play games as a whole. Not even Words With Friends (lol). But this game is FUN and I keep returning to it. I don't usually spend money for any app, but this one is worth it! Glad I spent the money. The new format looks beautiful and I like that you can look ahead to the next note on the note names game. If you are a "music nerd" and want more to a music app than learning middle C, buy this app!

Outstanding. I have read good & bad reviews. All I can say is it is very good. I have learned a lot, user feedback has led to updates. THERE ARE NO IN-APP purchases that you have to buy or unlock-GET THE APP-I have nothing to do with nor do U know the developer- there are 2 great ones, this is one

Excellent application - a must have for any serious musician!. What a great idea Joel Clifft had to bring this application to the iPhone - a fun and interesting way to brush up on your music theory skills and perhaps learn something new as well. I look forward to more practical applications to improve my musicianship in the near future! Thanks!

Great. For a dollar? I'm a music student and really need to study all of this but hardly sit down to study. With this I can study on the subway or whenever I'm bored, excellent design and feel. I mostly learn from trial and error but that seems to be the best way.

Very Useful App. I highly recommend this app. Major and minor Key Signatures, Major, minor, Perfect, Augmented, and diminished intervals!!! I will recommend this app to my piano students. Thank you for writing such a straight forward supplement to piano study. I use it as teaching tool daily in my piano studio. Thank you.

Great music theory App. This app is amazing for music theory! It helps me not only keep up my knowledge, but helps improves it. The new update is GREAT! Dr. Clifft did a great job adding new customizations which helps any person at any level learn music theory.

Educational Use. I am a music educator, and I plan to encourage students to purchase and use this application. A very thoughtful design, and options for social networking make it fun. A must for musicians!

Best music training app. Period.. If you're looking for the ultimate app for music theory training, this is it. New to music theory? Don't worry. Play the games and you'll be flying in no time. Experienced musician? You'll learn a ton of new stuff, and be better for it. Did I mention it's FUN? Worth every single penny and more.

Great job!. Exellent app, priceless. If you're a beginner, you should practice very slowly, many times and limit your choices in settings. I agree that this wasnt communicated properly in description. This is not a "stupid tutorial for lazy idiots" kind of thing, prepare for hard work.

Music Theory app. I have been a music student and Music Theory student for many years. This app is absolutely wonderful for sharpening a persons musical skills and knowledge. It is enjoyable to use therefore I use it to stay sharp. I am very glad to have this!

Handy App. Overall, a nice way to quiz yourself on various aspects of musc theory. To echo previous reviews, the applause is ridiculous and obnoxious and hugely distracting when you want to immediately retry a quiz (it continues over the top of the test). You can cut it short by quickly returning to the home menu. Please add an option to disable it or at least cut it off when someone wants to retest. Also, the key signature quiz is pretty useless since the buttons are arranged in such a way that the answers are completely obvious.

Excellent help. I'm preparing to return for an MM and this has been huge daily practice to learn, relearn and to drill. I would like a drill on which notes are sharp and flat within each key, though. Love it! Worth many times the price.

This is the MT App you're looking for.. I survived my first year of music theory with this, and am still constantly using it this year as well. It is nicely customizable and easy to use. There's a lot of material is covers. I absolutely love the ear training. It has been invaluable. Looks nice, too! This is the app to buy for Music Theory class.

Fun!. Really cool app. Only wish on the note reading the exit button should not be so close to the keyboard. I was on the zone do answer 2000 and my fat thumb hit hit the main menu button and ended my game. I was half way through. :,(

Great way to drill yourself!. Great app for reinforcing your skills. I've been using it to practice key signatures and it's been very helpful. One small issue is that occasionally the correct answer will be dimmed-out and unpressable...forcing you to choose an incorrect answer. Not really a big deal. I definitely recommend this app for any serious musician.

iPhone 3G. I declared a basic music minor in college. Very helpful if you know very little about music in general and want to get started.

Music Theory Pro. This app is totally misrepresented in the write-up. It is a quiz and review app for someone who has already studied the subject material elsewhere. The little bit of explanatory material isn't even enough to teach what's needed to answer the questions, let alone understand what's being reviewed. It is likely to be an adequate review quiz, but it certainly isn't like having a music professor in your pocket.

Terrific learning tool. Reviewers # 4 & 5 got it wrong - this is much more than a quiz app. Within each section there is a comprehensive explanation on the subject - what the nomenclature means and how it is applied. The quiz part is a very effective drill to get the subject deeply rooted in your head.

Hate it. Pictures show something I didn't get.. I was looking for an app that would show me diminished and half diminished chords and all I got was an app that wanted me to name the chord. This does not help me to read the IReal book. When I tried to contact the company to ask how to find it or how to properly use app. The bars in front only allow me to give a review. So here it is. I want my money back.
