Chirp! Bird Songs & Calls USA App Description & Overview

What is chirp! bird songs & calls usa app? Listen to and learn hundreds of bird songs and calls from across the continental United States, with up to 34 seconds of song for each bird, and alternative recordings for some birds.

Choose a state or group of states then sort the bird sounds in a variety of ways. Sort by song style to compare birds that hoot and coo, with birds with high pitched songs, or you might like to sort the birds by commonness, so you can listen to the most common ones first, then move on to less frequent backyard visitors. More advanced birders may like to listen to birds from a particular habitat, such as forest or freshwater for example. You can make lists of your favourites so that you can find them quickly.

Use the quiz to test your memory. Answer fast to earn a score multiplier and get on the high score table. Experienced birders can use the custom quiz to help distinguish and learn similar songs.

And when you need a rest, try the slideshow feature - choose which birds to include, maybe add background bird song, then simply relax. If you want to continue learning while you relax, switch the voiceover on and hear the name of the bird announced at the end of each clip. This is also a good way of competing with the family - who can say the name of the bird first?

Bird names are included in Spanish and French.

I love this app!. I've had this app forever, from when it was free. Sadly the free version no longer works, but I'm willing to pay for this app. I have several cats, and one of them hates bird songs! This app is too realistic for her, she's absolutely certain that there are birds in my phone. A+!

Absolute waste of money. As far as I can tell this app does nothing more than link to Cornell, which any birder already has. It seems to offer zero value, even if it was free

Great learning app. Doesn’t have all the birds, but has a lot, snd great flexibility for learning/quizzes.

Good and could be better. This is a fantastic app for learning songs and calls. Separating birds by region, the different levels of quizzes, especially the quiz on your chosen favorites is great. It would be even better if you could make several lists beyond one favorite. For instance, I now know many songs but would like to make a separate list for just calls since those are more difficult. I hope that’s an easy addition to this fantastic app!

Great App. So much fun!

This app is awesome but needs some improvements. I absolutely love this app, but a few things it needs more of are •More precise locations (I live in Maryland, so the fact that it includes some far northern birds in my region on this app isn’t very helpful) •More winter calls •A few more species (especially hummingbirds and shorebirds) •A season selection option (for example there would be a button in the title screen settings that says “Choose Season” that would let you choose 1 of the 4 seasons and then once you press listen, it lists the birds for that season in your [more precise 👆] area) I am not at all saying that this app is bad, but I would just like to let the developers know that it could use these improvements Thank you, Forrest

Plugger73. 4 solid stars. The missing 5th star is for the the missing feature of identifying the sound of a nearby bird .. like the app “Shazam” does for songs heard on the radio .. that would make this app a perfect 5.

Pretty much what I wanted.. I have to prime my brain for bird songs each spring and this gives me a good way to review what I haven’t heard for many months. Still learning the app: would like to be able to edit the geographical groups to delete, e.g., waterfowl or waders. Seems I’m able to do that in the slideshow mode, but not geo. Maybe I’ll figure it out. The quick quizzes are fun & probably useful. All in all, just as good, if not better than the CDs I’ve gotten accustomed to.

It updated but will. It open. Good app but still has bugs.

Misleading info. This app does NOT identify bird songs with a microphone as you walk in the woods. Instead, it matches birds with their songs. I am disappointed to have paid money for this.

Having App 'Issues'. This has been a great app. I've had it many years ...as of Recents I'm having issues with Chirp USA , upon opening the app it often goes immediately to settings?? and can be difficult to get to the home menu. I have already made sure my settings are all as I wish. I believe I have once uninstall the app and reinstalled was not a lot of improvement.. I may need to shop for another app similar as this once was very easy to navigate and user-friendly

Is good.. However it could have more variety of some calls. I’m still having fun with it. And the birds will call back. Crows have a such a wide variety of communication and I wish it was reflected here.

Fun tool for learning. Try it! It only really helps you identify one certain call from each bird during the quizzes, not all the different variations. I love it though, it's been helpful in identifying birds in my area as a beginner. It's not an expert guide but it's certainly fun and pretty rewarding.

It stopped working. This was a fun app while it worked but I think it has a timed fail date like just about everything else Apple or Apple affiliated. I received a message with instructions regarding how to get my app back up and it worked. Still a fan. This app is fun.

Chirp!. Awesome app. Easy swipe immediately provides song for quick reference. Favorite app so far and I've tried several.

Frustrating. I had used this app years ago and really enjoyed it. Downloaded it yesterday. The updates are very frustrating. I can’t go to a visual list. The extra work of having to click back to home page every time I want to view a bird. If the name of the bird I’d Robbin, I have to click, go back to home page, click, go back to home page, etc., too much work and time. If I’m doing something wrong, plz advise. For now. I’m going elsewhere.

Very helpful!. Definitely helpful in learning process. Could add more mnemonics and also taxonomic orders - including showing that info in slideshow and quiz views. Also would be very helpful if you could have multiple lists (rather than just "all" and "favorites" - you could then more easily focus on difficult calls/songs, regions or families.

Crashes. Love this app

Love it but can’t use it snymore. I’ve loved this app, but it no longer works on my iphone. When I try, I get an error message saying the app needs to be updated to work with this version of IOS. Boo!

Real bird songs. I really like the app but the songbird search doesn’t work. Needs a little improvement.

Chirp Rocks. We love this app. It has greatly enhanced our bird watching experience. It is also a good learning tool for our grandchildren

Good app, but needs some improvement.. This app is good, but it needs some improvement in two major areas. First, it needs more birds. I downloaded the app so I could improve my birdsong ID skills. But I can’t do that when it has only four species of shorebirds, which include one species of gull, one species of sandpiper, and one species of plover, plus the American Woodcock, no species of swallows, and no species of Egrets, to name a few. Quite frustrating. On a similar note the Level 3 quiz that says it’s supposed to include 50 birds, actually only includes about 10-20. If you took the quiz several times, most of the time it would only quiz you on the same 10 birds. Again, frustrating if you’re trying to learn bird songs. This app might be good for a beginner to learn bird songs, but you will eventually get to a point where your skills and demands of the app will exceed its limitations.

Love this app!!!!. I love finding new birds in my yard and being able to identify them with this app.

Doesn’t work anymore. This was my favorite bird song app, but doesn’t work anymore on apple 11

Very helpful for learning. I homeschool my children and we’re learning about birds and bird calls. So far, we’ve loved the app very much. When we’re outside, we do our best to listen to the birds. Then we’ll look it up in the app. We’ve so far identified some of the common birds in our front yard. Very happy with it, thank you very much.

I LOVE this app. I have used this app to help my grandchildren be aware of the birds that are around him. I knew it was successful when my three year old grandson said, “Listen, Grama, it’s a black-capped chickadee.” I have recommended this to anyone who will listen.

Few winter calls, only songs.. Clear audio that can be narrowed down to your locality. The slideshow groupings are good. However, living in South Florida, I am interested in the calls of our winter migrants. There are very few calls on the app, only songs. Do not buy this app if you want to learn the birds’ winter calls, especially the warblers. Plus, you can make a custom quiz but you cannot save it. What’s the point? If I want to create another quiz, I must clear the list. I can’t go back to the first quiz, I have to create it again every time.

Disappointed. Have owned this app for years and suddenly I need to pay again? I actually paid and now the app won’t even open up. Refund me please.

I love this app!. I came for the quiz...it’s fun and has improved my ability to identify birds by song. But I also really like the “listen” section. Very easy to use and it has helped me figure out birds that I can hear but not see. There is another app I use that plays a greater variety of songs for each species, but it is a little harder to use, in my opinion.

I love this app!. In Alaska in the winter, there are few birds — mainly ravens, chickadees, and magpies. I miss the cheery sound of song birds, and this app lets me hear a wide variety of bird calls.

Fun and helpful. I enjoy using if this to back up other bird apps. It is clear and quick to maneuver through.

My chirp review. I love it!! I’m 67 years old and what I thought was a robin I was hearing is actually a northern cardinal. I love to learn new things and I love bird watching. This app has increased my enjoyment greatly!

Great birding app!. Easier to use than most other bird Id apps! Use it all the time in the woods!

Terrific!. Love the app AND the links.

Bird fun!. I love this app. Also my son learned all of the birds in our by our region by using this app when he was three or four. He could not read yet so I would help with telling him the names but he could hear a bird and tell me exactly what it was

Fun Time. Everyday I go out and call cardinals to my yard. Once a woodpecker. It’s just a fun time

Fabulous & Flawless. One of THE best Apps ever. Well designed from start to finish. Brilliant. The designers knew exactly how users would want to use this app. I especially love the sorting feature. THANK YOU for the most pleasant app experience ever. BEAUTIFULLY DONE!

Voiceover no longer works. Until recently the app was awesome, but the voiceover for the slideshow recently stopped working, which defeats the reason I use the app. I like to exercise or do chores while listening to bird songs, trying to identify them and then listening to the voice over to tell me whether my identification was correct. I can’t do that anymore.

Nice program. I have really enjoyed this program. It’s easy to search & has a nice picture of each bird. Bird songs are great & abundant, though some of the bird calls are missing. All of the most common birds are there, and a few have more than one song as an option. I recommend it for an easy to use program.

Poor choice. I would like my money back this is not at all what I thought it was going to be and I don’t need to spend four dollars on something I’m not going to use. Please contact me

Put a bird on it!. Put a bird on it!

Great way to learn. I’ve been trying to learn to identify birds by sound and this is really helping. I enjoy playing the quiz games. I wish you could save your favorites instead of choosing them each time, so you could practice certain ones. I enjoy that you can choose regions. Overall I think it’s a great app.

Great help. This has helped to identify the songs and the birds by sight , sound, picture , wonderful 👍

Fun way to learn bird songs. I'm enjoying learning bird songs with this app. Good recordings. Challenging quizzes

Loved it but crashes. I have not been able to open this app for months. As soon as it opens it crashes. Tried to update but indicates I have latest version. Sigh

Great app. The app works flawlessly. If I play the app sounds in the yard, real birds will start getting riled up.

Won’t open. What’s going on with the app? If I try to open it kicks me right out. Not happy. I really enjoyed the app when working.

Myra. I love this app!!

Well organized. It is very easy to sort based in different characteristics, like commonness or bird type or type of song. I also like the swipe feature to get to the next bird and I really enjoy the quizzes at different levels of difficulty.

Use To Be Great. No longer compatible with iOS as of v 15.2.1

This app is lame. Don't buy it, this is a waste of money. I wish you could give it no stars. The bird selection is not area appropriate. I wish I had read my review before I bought this " pricey" app.

Best bird app. This is such a useful and informative app! By using the quiz feature, I have become more aware of the different birds in my area and I actually can identify them as well! The improved pictures in this update really help, as well. I love this app!

CHIRP Away!!. My husband and I have enjoyed this app immensely!! We use it in the backyard, on iconic a, vacations, and when we go hiking. Now, with the update it's even better than it already was!!!

Music to the ears. I am not a professional birder, but this app is a link to the incredible lives of birds. I have been able to identify birds that otherwise would have been anonymous sounds, and just running through the songs refreshes the pleasure of discovery and keeps the delight alive. Simple, intuitive, charming, knowledgeable without being overwhelming, this app is useful and beautiful and worthwhile in every way.

Great app (not perfect). I wish the pictures where better I have a large amount of pictures that are better than the current ones

Love it. Great app

Wonderful!. While it's not as informative as a book, it's much more convenient. Knowing what bird your looking for takes seconds, and finding a bird you don't know is pretty simple. Of course, this doesn't cover phases or the different sexual morphs, so it won't become a go-to for more than just a passing "hey, was that a purple or house finch?". You really shouldn't use this to call in birds. The app says it clearly and this has become common knowledge to even the most casual birder.

Great!. I love this app. It has calls for all of the birds in my yard. Recently, I heard a call of a bird that I could not identify, and since I had caught a glimpse of the bird, I went through the app until I found it. It turned out to be a very pretty Eastern Towhee, and friendly too; it flew back and forth just 6 feet away from me looking for the bird it heard. Another great use is to sneak up on the squirrels that invariably eat all the birdseed one puts out, and use the Red Tailed Hawk shriek. Very amusing. If you love birds, you should get this app. All I can ask for are more calls in future updates.

Chirpy crisp. Sooooo goooood! A must have for bird lovers... Or just everybode... Especially for those like me who cannot put a name on the call/song. Interesting interface with cornell's website. Worth much more than it's price. I love the suggestion of "Shazam" option to recognize bird songs recorded through the device.

Awesome app. Love it!!

C H U R P !. Great way to learn sounds and history of birds. (Would be greater if it incorporated the ability to listen to birds, and like an Avian "Soundhound," bring up the bird (or birds) that might fit.) -- THEY ARE DOING IT! Coming Soon: "Chirpo- USA" -- European already out. Write to them if you want to join their BETA TESTERS 6/8/17 update.

Great addition to a terrific app.. Although others have told me about other birding apps I "MUST" have, Chirp! has always given me exactly what I need when I want it. The links to Cornell answer any in-depth questions I might have. And the low price I paid for Chirp makes moot the "necessity" for all the other "must have" apps! Please keep tweaking and improving!

Sweet app. Nice and loud so I can have fun with the birds in my area. I scared one of our regular hang around crows with a falcon call. He went silent immediately and was looking all over the place. Heehee. What fun

Calls Birds Right To You!. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys bird watching, sitting on their porch watching birds or even photographing them! Instead of using this app to memorize calls I use it to call the birds to me! I've been using this app for close to 4 years and it never fails to catch birds' attention Plus I HAVE been able to memorize the names and faces of birds! If you choose to use this as a call make sure you don't over-use it! Birds aren't that stupid and once they put two-and-two together they usually just go about their buissness. Super handy, clear, well organized app!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

um at the please read review.. I know birders who use the bird call to find rare birds it helps because if you are by yourself but in a spot where that rare bird is use the call it will A ethire answer the call or B come out to see what's calling it work. Also do not tell people how to use the app.

Perfect to learn which birds are around me, even when I can't see them.. This app is perfect to learn the birds around me. I really want to know who's flittering around my yard, or when I'm on a hike. Most of the times I hear a bird, I don't get a good view of it. This app is just what I was looking for. They did a good job of making it user friendly. I was able to just click the 'northwest' section, and those other birds don't get in the way. I also use the 'custom birds' set for the quiz so that I can start with the most common ones near me. The quiz is a lot of fun, and I discovered that to start with I knew them a bit better than I realized.

Lousy organization. I got this app to study songs and calls but the organization is very annoying. Group classifications are either too broad or too specific. There are no group-specific quizzes (i.e. warblers, sparrows, shorebirds, etc.) and while you can make custom quizzes, you can't save them to do again later. This leaves me with the tedious task of checking each individual warbler species over and over. I suppose it's good for basic use, but to a birder it is frustrating.

Does what it says it does, nothing more. This app works fine. I'd give it five stars if it had a feature in which you could have a set of bird songs play in a loop with a verbal ID at the end of each song. This way you could play these sets of birds while exercising or driving or whatever and learn them. The way it currently works you have to choose to play the songs by bird, one at a time and there is no voice-over IDing them.

Fantastic. If I had known this app was as amazing as it is- I would have paid more money for it. Had sone great entertainment having bird "conversations" as the birds actually called back!!! Great for identification- and the Cornell links are great, too.

GreatBasicBirdCalls. Great site for beginners to learn basic bird calls. You can choose from a list and make your own list of favorite birds. My kids and I like to quiz each other on the different birds we hear in yard. Best site I've found yet

Great app to call your backyard birds!!!. I've had this app since it first came and use it a lot!! I've also learned to recognize some birds by their songs and from the pictures... Great job!! Keep improving!!

Awesome!!. Just got the app this morning and while sitting on the back porch playing the sounds two Barred owls flew in to check me out. They were absolutely beautiful! They stayed in a tree less than 30 feet away at eye level with my porch for about a minute. Worth every penny already!

In this case more is better. This is a great tool for learning to bird-by-ear, which should be a goal for any enthusiastic birder. The rewards of bird identification are greatly expanded when by-ear skills are added to by-eye skills. Just think of those times when you couldn't see 'em, but you could hear 'em. With by-ear skills, you'll know precisely what you are hearing, but not seeing. The only thing this app needs is a larger library of birds. 250 down, 550 to go.

Excellent!. I love this app! The bird songs are captured in very high quality audio and play back at a sufficient volume level. I can sit on my back porch and can easily call in my resident cardinals, blue jays and mocking birds.

To Die For App.. Love this app. It makes it so easy to identify birds. Information is good. It allows you to access different information sites. The bird sounds are so clean, you can even use them to call your local birds.

Awesome app. To the person who said "umm sound control...blah blah...hi 2011..." -you do realize that this is an app based entirely on bird sounds? Sound is pretty much the only reason you should have this app open. Why would you try to ruin their reputation for your stupidity? This is a really fun application and the quiz is such a fun bonus! I'd love an update with more development in the quizzes! Worth much more than the asking price!!

Fantastic App. I enjoy sitting on the back porch watching the bird feeders in the evening. This app actually calls birds that I enjoy watching, including cardinals, various types of woodpeckers, bluebirds, etc. I love that you can favorite birds in your own region as well for easier accessibility. Great app!!!

Good App. This is a ver good App. Very educational and informative. I enjoy trying to ID different birds using the App. and then comparing their calls to the ones on the app. Two nit picks: 1) Photos of birds (while in browsing mode) are too small on my iPhone 6. 2) there appears to be no Gambles Quail (or any Quail) shown for the Southwest region, despite the quail being one of the most prolific birds in the Western US! Big oversight.

Great!. This is a well organized, well conceived application that I really enjoy! I would love to see an app like this in reverse, like ones that identify songs. That is, that the smart phone can listen to the bird call via a microphone and give the bird's identity.

My Absolutely Favorite App. This app is not only easy to use and full of information, but it's also a lovely heartening thing. I love birds and birdsong and all the purity of nature they represent and this is present here in abundance, so that I listen to it often just for the joy of it. It is very helpful if you hear or see a bird you just can't place. Easy to look up and also links to other places if you want to learn more.

Great for beginners. I wanted to be able to recognize the birds I hear on my morning walk. This app is perfect for that. It sorts birds by how common they are. Then it can quiz you on it. I now know what I hear in the morning! If the developers read this review: I wish it had a function to quiz on similar sounding bird calls. Not just custom. Hopefully this is coming in an update. The resolution and speed of the Wikipedia link are a little slow, and could be improved. Some of the transitions could be improved. Like usually you can use all fingers to pinch details screens closed in other apps. The text in the opening screen is hard to read.

Great Apps!!. What a great reference apps. Educational - it's neat to be able to hear a song and given time, be able to identify the bird by sight as well. For a mere $2.99 you get picture and some info and sound to go. Great improvement over the olden days when all you had was a boring reference book (which you paid more for) with you in the field with a few pictures and text. The slideshow portion is neat in that when I'm working night shift in a windowless room filled with computers and other technical equipment, I can just let the songs play in the background and it changes the ambiance of the room to a much better cheerful place to work. Get the benefit of many pretty birdsongs without the extra work of cleaning and feeding and taking care of the actual birds. Totally recommended. Keep up the great work. Also, customer service rocks! Answers to my questions were very prompt and helpful.

Another use for this app. I am at this moment beta testing another use for this app. I selected a few of our local birds then set the app on slideshow and hid my phone in the office of a co-worker with a low tolerance for birdsong. It's driving him crazy. If you try this, turn your phone down so the sound can barely be heard. Stand back and watch the fun!!! Oh, and be prepared for the eventual act of revenge!

User friendly could always add more birds. I use this app often as I try to learn more about birds in my area. I love the custom quiz and tend to just use that. There is always room for more birds and more specific calls that are relative to region/state. Really awesome app!

Fun, fun, fun. Freak out the birds in your area by playing the sounds for all different types of birds in your region. They come a calling. The birds that is. What fun to watch birds fly around the house, sit on the roof and hide in the trees to find the mate. A must have download. I'm not kidding.

Love our birds!. GREAT App!!!!!!!

A great learning app. I bought this for my 2 year old granddaughter who loves birds. She spends long periods of time scrolling through the pictures of the birds and listening to their calls. She loves this app and is learning so much.

Nicely done. Excellent app. Both entertaining and informative, and easy to use. Good coverage of most birds in the Northeast US, and very clear sound recordings. Includes tools to sort by song characteristics--hopefully future versions will add more specific sorting criteria to help in identification.

Informative, Educational, Fun. Great bird sound tracks with a picture and facts to go with each bird presented. You have the option of selecting the birds you want to hear and view. To test your knowledge there are fun quizzes. I would recommend this app.

Great Tool!. This is a beautiful program and I love to use it. The interface is simple. Of course, I would welcome new and more birds and a way to check off species I have heard and identified.

LOVE!. I love love love this app! I organized by most common to my area. Played the top result and my husband said, "Hey that's the bird that wakes us up every morning!" We frequently hear almost everything on the top of the list. Amazing! Learned more in 30 seconds than I could have with intense research elsewhere. GREAT job!!! If you want to learn more about birds you see and hear near your home, don't hesitate to buy. Even my 4 year old son loves learning about our birds thru this app! Can't say enough good things. This is what apps are supposed to be like. 😄

Worked for a day. I like the app but after 1 day the app now quits when I hit the "listen" button on my iPhone 4 with iOS 5. Hope they fix it soon. UPDATE: After the update now it works fine. Chirp on!

Great app, minor flaws. This app is wonderful, it's easy access to many calls making identification easy. 2 flaws: there's a lot of common birds that aren't included so I must leave the app often ( thru the link provided to Cornell) to find the info, and if I loose my Internet connection for a moment, the app screen goes blank and won't restart unless I turn my iPad all the way off and back on (sleep mode doesn't do it, closing the app doesn't do it-kind of a pain). hopefully this will be resolved in an update, and some more birds will be added. But it's still a great app.

Ok for beginners but limited. This app works. The interface is simple and easy to follow. It plays brief bird songs and contains links to Cornell's All About Bird Songs for each bird (requires internet). There is a quiz function that allows you to play simple automatic quizzes or allows you to create your own quiz. That said, there is a lot missing. I bought this to learn spring Warbler songs in New England and immediately found several birds missing (Canada Warbler, Connecticut Warbler, etc.). The songs the library does possess are not comprehensive and so a lot common variation is missing. Some of the songs also sound non-standard to my ear. The quiz function-- although a good idea-- is not that satisfactory. Although you can select the birds from the library, you can't modify the quiz structure. The result is a quiz that is too short (maybe 10 questions) and the songs are only played in brief snippets. All a rather limited that is a good idea but doesn't quite come off.

Great app! A bird fanciers delight.. This app is easy to use, has a simple interface, the bird song recordings are excellent, the bird pictures are great and the app covers all the birds in the US (there is a European version I have not used). It starts with getting your location. Then you can list the birds by first name, last name, commonness or song style. Choose a bird and see a picture and hear the song. Take a walk in your neighborhood and you can immediately begin to recognize the birds by their song. Robins, junkos, sparrows, finches and wrens all announce who they are. Take a hike in the hills nearby or the lake or sea shore. You can hear robins, crows, gulls, herons, ducks and hawks and match their sound and picture. There are links to Cornell and Wiki for added information. I would recommend this for amateur bird watchers or anyone that ever wanted to know "what is that bird I hear?"

Myra. I love this app!!

Smart, intuitive design, links to further info. This app s smartly designed: you can select a region of the USA to have it filter by bird species there, and in the subsequent lost you can sort by name or by commonness. When I did that for my region it was spot on for the most common birds. It was fantastic to then just tap through the top dozen to find the birdsong I had been hearing outside. Easy and pleasing interface, from sky blue background to pic and info that pop up for each entry with links to both the Wiki and the Cornell birding website for more info (this latter features more recordings of the birdsong, more photos, more info). I can hardly wait to travel to another part of the States to test out the app in a new region!

Review of Chirp USA. I LOVE this app!!! I have been bird IDing by sound for several years now and I can create a list of birds I hear throughout Spring and Summer that I can 'test' myself with so when I get in the field I hear and identify many more birds!! It's just GREAT!!

Best app ever for identifying birds by song. Other apps may include a wider range of songs for each bird, or a wider range of birds, but they do not allow a user to search by the type of song. If you want to identify a bird that you have heard, but not seen, this app is wonderful! And it is accessible for blind users!

Not regional enough. Los Angeles county has over 200 species. I have three owls and two humming birds along with all the other species typical to our region around my house. Only one of the owls is in the app. There's lots of species that seem quite unlikely in SoCal - wild turkeys? Really? I encourage the developer to keep working. With a larger database and more focused regionalization this could be useful to me. Better support for identification of songs would be a big plus - i frequently hear songs of species "passing through" but cannot see them. If I could have the app capture the song and identify the bird that would be truly superior software.

Super App. This is a super app for identifying birds. The list has a photo of each bird and its name. You can arrange the list of birds by first name, second name, commoness in your area, or song style. If the bird has more than one song it plays both. You can also search for a particular bird. I would definitely purchase the app again.
