Love_This_App. Free or premium this app is very useful and has made an holy impact on my spiritual and physical life. I recommend this app! My husband now has it too and he dislikes apps. This app glorifies God and is truly an anchor in every season. Having the Holy Bible go everywhere and be everywhere is paramount. I enjoy all the different reading plans and devotionals. I love listening to the amazing voices read the scripture. I like the optional music that can play behind a reading for meditative purposes. There are companion books as well, but, I recommend reading the Holy Bible before reading what others have to say about it. It’s just a wonderful app. They did well creating this resource for all people. I did purchase the premium subscription because I wanted to support this app, and I knew it would be worth the extras. I was right about upgrading. Thank you to all behind this app and Thank You Jesus Christ for this app. Amen!

One thing would make this my ideal Bible app. I have been using the ESV app for quite some time, and find it’s simplicity very appealing. My most used feature would be the audio streaming, which has been immensely helpful to me as an audio learner. The only thing I really wish was possible with this app is for it to usable on the Apple Watch. To avoid distraction in day-to-day life, I prefer to leave my phone at home many times, or in a drawer, relying on my Apple Watch, that is connected cellularly. This is especially true when I am taking time to get in the Word and pray. Being able to stream in this way would be a huge benefit.

My daily Bible for years. Big fan of this app. It is my primary Bible for years now. Notes highlights references etc. I log in to the website to export my notes for further study and analysis. I like the simplicity yet handy features. And dark mode is my jam. The developers are always responsive when I send feedback. I use it on both iPhone and iPad, with my notes and highlights syncing. I also like the audio features with multiple voices now. The reading plan feedback from others years ago seems to be fixed now.

Bug: Can't purchase subscription and iPad layout. I like all the content updates. The only problem is that I can't purchase them. I keep getting an error when trying to subscribe through the iPad app. Additionally, I'd like to be able to read the Bible in landscape mode without seeing the other tools and books on the right-hand side. There used to be an option to hide it. It's a problem when using multi-tasking on my iPad, b/c the text becomes really small when I have two apps open in split screen mode. It's enough of a problem that I've stopped using this app (for now).

Best designed Bible app. This app primarily focuses on what a Bible is primarily for—reading. If only more translations were available in an app this good. I have noticed one minor issue though. I don’t know if it’s a bug or if it’s intentional, but the sans serif font is much bolder than it used to be, which just looks a bit strange to me. And if I can request a feature, I would love to be able to remove section headings without going into reader’s mode. I like having numbers and footnotes most of the time, but I find that sections headings seriously diminish the continuity of the text, especially in the gospels, and they aren’t very useful to me.

Love the update, with one issue that I hope gets fixed. The ESV app is fantastic. I have subscribed to so much content and use it on a daily basis for sermon prep. I love the amount of content I receive for what I pay, and feel it’s generous to the user. The one issue I would love to see developers address…when I leave the app and come back to it (not close the app, just navigate to a different one), the library window closes and must be re-opened (which then requires you to navigate back to where you were in the resource you were using). I imagine lots of preachers, lots of bible students, lots of Christians will find this cumbersome and difficult. As a preacher, I am constantly moving back and forth from manuscript to commentary to bible to other resources. This feels like it would be a simple thing to address from a programming perspective. We simply need the app to “stay where it is” when we navigate away from it, instead of defaulting to a closed library. I hope it happens! Thanks Crossway for changing the game for bible students and preachers everywhere!

Great, but still has a few kinks to work out. I love that ESV has created its own app. I was so happy when they announced Kristen Getty had recorded audio of the scriptures. For the most part it is easy to use and it has a wonderful layout. The app needs to have a better search function that guesses at what passage or plan you are attempting to search for. I know you don’t have to type out the full name of each book, but I only discovered that feature on accident. Many people don’t know how to spell every book in the Bible. If you do misspell in your search you end up with no results at all instead of the software pointing you to passages that most resemble your search.

Good features, inconsistent performance. Great features, love all the reading plans, and having the ESV study notes there, as well as options to read it in reader version, etc. Cons: this is a glitchy app. It seems like every 6 months or so there is a major glitch that really affects performance. Also, I agree with the other reviewer that the audio feature doesn’t work with the reading plans, which is a huge downer, especially since there are other bible apps that do this well. I use this as my sole bible app, however, which these issues could get resolved as it would make my reading experience a little easier.

Love this app!. So far, I’m loving this app and specifically all the tools that come with the subscription. I’m doing a study on Daniel, and truly enjoying it. One issue I’ve come across, however, is in the Knowing the Bible 12 week study guide for Daniel, there is a Q&A section which gives you space to write your thoughts and responses. I LOVE this, however an error message pops up when trying to save my responses. Also, I’m not sure if you can edit a response once saved, but that would be important as well. Also, is there an ability to somehow do this study with a friend and share each other’s responses? Just a thought. Separately, the navigation of the app isn’t entirely intuitive however there is A LOT of content to navigate through, so understand it can be tricky to design. With that said after spending some time with the main ESV app, and navigating between the study Bible, Knowing the Bible Daniel study, and other content, I’ve developed more familiarity and it actually works quite well and makes sense. So thankful for this app, and the work you all are doing.

Waiting for fix. I have loved using this app for years. This is my go-to Bible for my daily devotions. And I love being able to record notes on various verses and likely have hundreds if not over a thousand such notes. Nonetheless, ever since the last update the verses are no longer marked in the text as to whether a note has been added or not. The notes are still there but there is no way of knowing unless I click on each verse individually or at the time to scroll through all the notes in the notes tab. Would be thrilled to have the verses marked again as they were previously.

Great update!. I know y’all have been getting some critical reviews about the most recent update, but I like the app receiving a much needed facelift. I’ve been using the ESV app for 7 years now and I have seen almost every iteration of this app since it came online. But this update was a good one. It brought it in line with other apps like the youversion Bible App and Bible Gateway and it now looks much more attractive than both of them. My Study Bible functions much better and the new resources are fantastic. Thank you for the great app!

Reading plan section. Can you please fix the reading plan section? When you click on a day, it does not look like it is selected, and using it just feels like a mess. I’ve been using it for over three months, and I still haven’t gotten used to it not working intuitively and making sense. It would be great if the day pressed in the top bar would show that it was selected after clicking on it, not after you check off one of the passages. I also have a few issues with the app being weird with remembering the things I checked off. Overall it just doesn’t seem to work the way it was made to work.

Almost great.. I love this app for its beauty and simplicity, allowing me to focus solely on the Scripture, especially coming from the YouVersion app which has gotten more and more cluttered with social features, videos, etc. (The point of a Bible app is to read the Bible, right?) However, I have one issue with this app, and two feature requests. My issue is that there’s no way to cancel a reading plan once one has started it, which frankly drives me crazy as I dislike marking a plan as complete to get rid of it when I didn’t complete it. My first feature request is for the Greek interlinear from the ESV website to be included in the app. It could be made so that a tap brings up the interlinear, while a long press still brings up the love/highlight/note/copy. My second feature request is for a black splash screen when opening it. That way it isn’t blinding to open at night, and it’s sort of like the black leather cover many Bibles have.

Just started using. I am trying out a new app because the You version Bible app has become bogged down with countless features and too many gimmicks that don’t really enhance the read of Gods word. It is hard to navigate with all the different things it does. It’s fine for some people just not me. I needed something simple so I found this app. So far I like the simplicity of the app and the features are easy to figure out with a little playing around with them. The one thing I feel like I will miss however is notifications with the verse of the day and widgets that can place on my phone to see the verse of the day without having to open up the app. The widget serves as a reminder to me to read and to contemplate on Gods word. I’m not sure if those are features in the subscriptions which I can tell you in a world of subscriptions I am not fond of nor can I afford another one. I would be willing to pay a 1 time fee for more features like notifications and widgets as well as the option to share verses or study plans with others via text, email etc. other than this I am excited to try this app out and come closer to God.

A new year, another ill-planned update. Sigh. First off, I get it. It’s a free app. And it’s a great app...for about 6mo of the year. At the end of the year, the developers decide to reinvent the wheel and roll out a huge update and jazz it up and it’s then 4-6mo of fixing what didn’t need to be fixed in the first place. I see that with 2020 here, they did not miss a chance to do another one of those horrible revamps. My daily bible reading plan completely changed formats overnight, and there is no other plan that offers the format it was using for the past several years. It was a great plan because my church uses the same schedule to go through the Bible in one year and the ease of having it on my iPad was so wonderful. Again, I get it, I’ll just keep the hard copy handouts my church puts in the bulletin at the end of every year and just read off those and manually keep track, but what a bummer to wake up Jan 1 and find the change. But then again, I shouldn’t be surprised. It happens EVERY. YEAR.

Don’t use the reading plans. First, this works well as a bible. The highlights and notes are saved on your account and go with you when you change devices. The main problem is with the reading plans. This past year I’ve read through the Bible using the Chronological plan. Several times during the year the plan was revised and I had to find passages I’d “misses” and read them. (Ex. the whole book of job moved) The kicker was today, December 20, the plan changed again and all the progress was lost. I can figure out manually and by memory what I haven’t read yet and put my own plan together for the last twelve days of the year, but it’s frustrating to need to do that so near the end. The developers need to allow a reading plan to be frozen once a reader has subscribed. That way they can make improvements for new readers without disrupting those already on the plan.

Most used app on my phone. I love the ESV app. I’ve been using it for a couple years now. I love the new updates: the search tool, the various study Bible options, and the Explore tab! I have an iPad that I use to take notes on the ESV app during Sunday sermons and I love it. I would prefer if you could see a little icon within the text of the chapter/verse where I’ve taken notes versus having to pull up all the notes I’ve written and scan through until I find the one I’m looking for that correlates to the verse I’m on. There is one glitch in the app for iPhone: if I am listening continuously to Scripture through multiple chapters and following along with the tracking feature, sometimes the same chapter repeats itself instead of continuing on to the next chapter. Minor but a bit of a nuance. Other than these minor things- I still love the app!

New update has issues. Update: Thank you for fixing both the issues that I mentioned in my last review. For me this app is almost perfect. I don’t love the subscription model but it doesn’t affect the way I use the app. I wish the “To the Word” Bible reading challenge was available in your reading plans but that’s not a huge deal. I also wish that in addition to the subscription model you would add one-time purchases. We would gladly buy Kristyn Getty’s voice but can’t pay a subscription just for that. I’m old school. I prefer to own things rather than rent them. This is not a slight to those who like the subscription model. I’m just saying that you’re missing out on financial support by not having any offerings for people like me. I still love the app though and use it every day. These are just suggestions. Thank you! I use this app multiple times a day everyday. It is one of the most used apps on my phone. The new update is very frustrating. You close the app, it starts you back over at Genesis 1. Why won’t it just open back up to where I was when I closed it??? Also when go to a chapter the audio starts in the previous chapter. Why won’t it start in the chapter so selected? In psalms it starts at the beginning of the psalm prior to the one I selected!?! I’m not sure what’s going upon but this major update is majorly glitchy. I loved this app. Please fix these and other issues asap and I will return to review to 5 stars.

My favorite app for reading the Bible. I have used this app for many years and have found it to be the best bible app for reading scripture. Searching for a specific chapter is amazingly quick. All the text is saved locally on your device, so loading is fast. The interface is clean and gets out of your way. It just lets you read without suggesting something else. If you’re looking for reading plans and other features, you might look elsewhere. But as for a straight digital copy of scripture, you won’t find a better app.

Why I’m leaving…. I’ve used this app for seven years now. I have especially liked the convenience of being able to seamlessly switch between listening and reading on it. This was not without its glitches. The audio has occasionally repeated a just-read section for no reason, but will then continue on. This latest iteration (2-weeks ago) is disappointing. The cross-reference is now more limited and awkward to use. It used to open the referenced verse in a sub-window, which was scrollable, without leaving the current one. No more. The new version will no longer allow me to highlight or make notes unless I create an account. I don’t see why a Bible-app needs my personal info, unless they wish to sell it. Based on my experience, it’s best to limit such exposure to those who NEED to know. So, I’m now looking for a new Bible app. I doubt I shall be the only one.

ESV Instance Mocks Our Lord, our God. This ESV instance mocks our Lord, our God. ESV wry wrongly does not capitalize the pronouns of Our Lord nor of our God. Indeed, this instance mocks and ridicules Christ our Lord and the Father and the Holy Spirit of the reverence due Them, together and independent. John 6:28-30 ~ ESV [28] Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” [29] Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” [30] So they said to him, “Then what sign do you do, that we may see and believe you? What work do you perform? _________________ It is appalling that the pronouns of Christ or our Lord God or the Holy Spirit are not initial caps. This proclaims to and leads the reader tha irreverent and irresponsible disposition to our Lord in that He is not to receive the full Dignity and Honor due His Divine Person. _________________ Proper and reverent respect and honor as follows: John 6:28-30 ~ [28] Then they said to Him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” [29] Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.” [30] So they said to Him, “Then what sign do You do, that we may see and believe You? What work do You perform?”

Simple and classic. I love the latest update. It fixed everything that bothered me about the app (which wasn’t much). THANK YOU for finally updating to utilize the full iPhone X screen!! And the update has fixed it so that not ALL the text in the study section is in bold (a minor irritation, but something that bothered me all the same). I use this as my primary Bible app for when I’m on the go and a hard copy irl for my regular reading, note taking or reading plans so I don’t have comments or input on those sections. I love this app. Simple and classic, no distractions from the text.

Disappointing update. Newest update disappointment I like to stand my iPad up (horizontally) to read hands free. The new changes to the app now block the right half of the screen with things I don’t want to see when reading horizontally. I don’t want to have to hold my iPad vertically to read, but I want the text to fill the screen. This new version/update makes reading more difficult and less enjoyable. Besides this, there seems to be only 2 font sizes available now- small and smaller. As much as I love this app, it is becoming less useful and will soon have to be replaced with a Bible that has better formatting and a better reading experience (My old review) I love the ESV and this app is great; it is easy to use. It seems, though, that something changed with the optional font size in the settings. It used to be that “Extra Large” was indeed large, and very easy to read. Now though , “Extra Large” isn’t large at all, it is really just an average size font like you’d find as a default in most apps with text. I really liked the extra large font. Since the screen cannot be zoomed while reading, the current largest font size is disappointing since it is so small. As I say, something changed in an update, probably in the last several months, but I don’t know when. I love the app, but need to wear strong glasses to see it.

My favorite Bible app. I’m very impressed with the design and the simplicity of this app. Granted, I use a couple that provide different tools but what strikes me about this is that when I first open it, it jumps straight to the text - no additional menus to hack through or anything, just straight to whatever I was last reading. Because that’s why I’m using it - to read the Bible. And of course the app is just beautifully designed and enjoyable to use. Thank you all so much for understanding that the primary focus of a Bible app is to read the Bible, and thank you for delivering on the goal so well. 👍

Great app but new update a serious downgrade. This has been my go-to app for years now. I love using it to read and listen to the Bible. However, recently they updated it and several things have changed for the worse. First, they moved buttons around which doesn’t make a lot of sense. The search is now in the tab bar (against Apple’s HIG) and the search feature is laggy. The animations are choppy and actually searching is cluttered. The text is too big so you see one search result at a time. When I realized my app updated, I went to check my highlights (again, been using this app for years) and panicked because the list was empty. However, when I go to passages which I have highlighted they do appear. But to add new highlights I NEED TO LOG IN, WHICH NEVER WAS REQUIRED BEFORE. This is terrible. I think I might use this opportunity to switch apps. Additionally, it seems some content has now gone behind a subscription paywall, which seems unwise to me for a Bible app.

Weak support. The ESV app was great in the early years. Seems, as of late that it isn’t getting much attention from developers. Couple problems have persisted for more than a year. These two changes having to do with the Bible reading plan interface would greatly improve this app for daily users. One, the Bible reading plan of choice has to be reopened and reselected from a scrolling list of plans every day, and, even if you are moving around in and out of it on the day of use. Two, if you’re in a reading plan and go to use audio, the audio scrolling will not maintain the reading plan sequence. Instead it reverts to the book of the Bible of which that chapter is a part. It would be an improvement if audio would scroll through the entire reading plan for the day, moving seamlessly through each chapter selection.

Exactly what I’ve been looking for!. I’ve owned an ESV Study Bible —which I call The Brick because it’s so heavy — for years and I’m extremely happy to see that the app brings all the great commentary, maps, charts, and other information in a MUCH more portable version right to my phone. It’s a small feature, but the biggest “wow” factor for me was when I tapped on a cross reference and the verse popped up in a small window on the bottom of the screen. The only thing I would like to see is the Discipleship Journal Reading Plan. Thank you for such a great resource for studying God’s Word!

Great App!. I’ve used the ESV Bible app for over a year now and love how easy it is to navigate to and/or search for scripture passages, and I love the Bible reading plans, and the ability to listen to passages as well. A couple suggestions for improvements though: 1. Add the ability to select a specific passage and play that passage’s audio recording on a repeat loop. This would be helpful for Scripture memorization. 2. I listen to the audio in my car using a Bluetooth speaker that is not very powerful. Most podcasts output a sound level that I can hear just fine, but this app outputs a lower sound level that makes me have to strain my ears to hear. Maybe I’m the only one with this problem though. 3. It would be nice if I could push play and have the audio play my daily Bible reading plan passages. As it stands, if I have 4 separate passages, it starts at the begging but keeps on going past the end of the first passage until I stop it and find the next passage and push play.

Easily listen to your reading plan.. One of my favorite features is that you can listen to your reading plan. When you do this the app will read through all of the passages that are listed for the day. The only downside is that I was only able to find this feature after enabling reminders to read a selected reading plan. After the reminder comes in, you must swipe left and tap “view” after that, the option to select “read” or “listen” will be available. I love this feature but I haven’t been able to find it in any where else in the app. This is problematic because if I completely swipe away the reminder notification on accident; I lose the ability to listen to the reading. Also I feel that navigating through the plans could be better. Being able to put your favorite plans on top would be nice.

Cross reference problem. The links to cross references in the ESV Study notes send you to the verses cited, but then you are left there with no “back to where you were” option . This is very frustrating. I have to manually go find where I was to return to the passage I was reading. This defeats the purpose of having cross references. It seems the new app version removed the “back to” option. Please fix this! Other users have been complaining about this. The responses from the app developers are disturbing… they act as if they cannot understand what the users are experiencing. They ask the users for more specifics to be sent to them in emails, and then give users instructions that clearly cannot be the solution (click on an X that doesn’t exist, click outside the reference box, etc). It seems that the developers do not appreciate the disappointment and consternation that is happening with this app update. I rarely ditch apps. It seems that the ESV app has become so dysfunctional that it is time to find a much better Bible study app.

Need improvement on study plans. Everything is great and I love that we can customize the appearance of the pages (text, dark mode, etc.). I also really love the variety of study plans that the app offers! One confusing thing is that the plans do not let you filter out certain kinds of plan (like plans for a whole year or just a few weeks). And it gets tedious when you have to scroll through every plan to find the one that you are studying. Even the plans that I have finished are still there so that makes it a bit mundane. Great app and I’m looking forward to more improvements!

Could be Excellent. As a minister for close to 30 years, I would day that the resources connected with this app are of the finest quality. Especially if one pays the $4/mo subscription. Money can't buy better. The only thing that keeps me from rating this app with 5 stars is the irritating fact that when one is reading a commentary (or study bible notes) and then moves to the Bible to check the actual text, the app automatically kicks you to the top of whatever you were reading (such as the beginning of the chapter) -- so anytime you move to the Bible part of the app, you will lose your place in whatever else you were reading. Fix that and I think I could sell the rest of my books and just use this!

I liked the old version better- please go back!. I’d like to leave a review because I’m sure I’m not the only one having this issue. Previously when searching for a word or scripture reference in the search tool you could click on one of the results and then go back to the search tool and still see the list either of the scripture results or at least see a history of what had been searched so you could easily click on it and get the list of results again. This feature is sadly gone. Now you have to type the search again and scroll through and try to find where you left off. Please go back if possible!! There do seem to be other nice improvements to the app and I thoroughly enjoy using it and have always recommended it for it’s useful search tool but probably won’t be as eagerly now that it’s changed. Thank you for considering!

Thank you. This is great! I used to use YouVersion, but it became so busy I don’t like it anymore. I have even started to shift back to my personal hard copy, and this app has probably helped. So good. One request. Could you make some optional playback settings? I appreciate how in this app the Bible will just be read to me without chapter numbers interrupting the reading - that is how it was written to be read. However in the some books where chapters actually delineate distinct passages (psalms, most proverbs, and some prophets), breaks between chapters and reading of chapter numbers would be helpful. Can you make the reading of chapter numbers or at least pausing between chapters an optional playback setting?

My favorite app. I use this app all the time. I really like it’s search and note taking capabilities. I like being able to copy verses or send them and highlight things and favorite them. Sometimes you need just a little extra emphasis. I also enjoy having the optional bookmarks. That’s very convenient. However, I have noticed that the footnotes are off (like numbers 1 and 2 in the same verse, but number 1 doesn’t have a note but 2 does and it’s labeled “1” when you open the footnote). I’m not sure if this is everywhere, but I know for sure it’s in Jeremiah and Lamentations. Overall not a big deal, but it’s strange.

Reading is Great. I’ve had this app a few years it’s my go to when I new quick reference I also enjoy reading it’s easy to read and understand. I do still love and read my Bible I love holding it and turning the pages and looking for books and chapters, but I do love this App As well it is a wonderful tool to have . I’m still learning all the features it has I love that I can mark verses I love and I can highlight things and it show the words in Red as well. If you don’t have your bible it right here and you can follow along. So Many positives. Thank you The only this I would change is I wish the numbers where by the verses. I use this sometime whit my devotional to read scriptures and it makes it hard to find if you looking for a verse or two in the chapter.

ESV Bible app. I have used this bible app for a year and a half now and have enjoyed it. I love what Crossway offers in regard to the ESV Bible itself and all its Bible resources, from the different study bibles to the variety of narrators. Unfortunately, since the start of me using this app, I have found it to be very glitchy. The areas that I have found don’t work well are: -Highlighting: When selecting a section to highlight, the highlight box pops up and it blocks my ability to highlight multiple verses at the same time. When I do highlight a verse and exit the highlight box, the verse remains unhighlighted. -General Lag: It takes a second or two for the app to respond to any action that’s made, whether it’s scrolling, highlighting, or clicking around in the app, or changing features.

New version has problem. Updated: thanks for the follow-up! It appears that my problem with the update has been resolved. I may have had to delete the digging deep into the Bible plan and the reload it into the new version of the app to get it resolved. Or they fixed it. Either way I like the updated app now it tracks my daily reading. And while I don’t like having to pay for something I used to get for free (Kristyn Getty reading) I do believe “a worker deserves their wages” so I paid. I hope they keep improving the app with the funding. It is a really good way to get your Bible study in daily. And the ESV Bible is the best translation in my view. ——- old review: One star for the app update. I’ve used this app for years and was using the “digging deep into the Bible plan” that allowed me to go through the Bible in a year. It has a problem now that it checks off the days readings without ever doing the readings. It would be nice if it stopped doing that. Also I don’t like how I have to pay for a voice. Used to be free. Oh well. Everyone has to make money I suppose. At least one voice is free.

My Favorite Bible App — User Friendly. This is the best Bible app that I have used. Its simplicity and elegance are perhaps its greatest strengths. The user/reader experience of this app is wonderful. The app is not overloaded with features that distract the reader from God’s Word. The features that it does offer are useful and well designed. With the most recent update it appears as if the existing features have been improved/streamlined. This is encouraging to me because, as far as I can tell, none of the simplicity or elegance of this app has been lost; the update is a real improvement (additional colors for highlights, improved note-taking features, more voices for the audio Bible, general small improvements in UX). I think I speak for the average reader/app-user when I say that I appreciate simplicity over difficult-to-use or specialty features with steep learning curves. I have not used the commentaries or study Bibles very much, but it does seem like they could be a bit better integrated with this app. As it is they are useful to have on my phone and I am glad to pay for them. A map feature would be a cool addition to this app if the developers get around to it someday :) This is a well designed app. I am satisfied with it as it is but I hope that if there are more updates in the future that they will only improve the already excellent user/reader experience.

Want to love but... I can’t. There is so many issues with this app for me. The bookmarks, the highlights, and just the layout does not work for me. I have the Bible app and love that they give you choices on color for highlights. This app is an eyesore and pretty much worthless if you want to highlight. The bookmarks seem to always go away, especially if there’s an update. The voice for reading is hard to follow, I’m not sure why, it just isn’t very friendly when trying to follow the reading. The woman’s voice has such a strong accent you have to continue to rewind if listening which fails completely if you don’t have access or if your walking and listening. This is just sadly an app I do not use which in my opinion is sadly missing the point of trying to carry a message to the people who need it. Go with the Bible app if you want way more ability to customize. This app is light years behind and isn’t fulfilling its purpose whatsoever

Love this for the audio, but two requests. I use this app mostly to listen to the audio version while driving. Really love it, but I have two suggestions: 1- make the audio downloadable. Sometimes I roll through dead zones with little or no cell service and can’t listen. 2- I have to listen with my phone unlocked or it will loose my place. If my phone is locked, it will play normally. However, if I pause or stop, the app automatically goes back to the place where I was when the phone was unlocked and screen on. Really drains my battery to have the phone on and app scrolling alongside the audio while listening.

The functionality of the search feature has been gutted with the latest update.. I am disappointed with this latest update. My scripture search history is no longer being saved, so I am no longer able to see past searches that I have made. Also, now when I click on a reference from the scripture search, and then go back to the search, it has deleted even the current search, so I then have to search the term again and then scroll all the way through every reference again to go to the next reference in the search. This latest update has completely gutted the functionality of the search feature. Very disappointing.

Multiple things need fixing. The app needs to be regularly maintained, given the amount of time that’s passing between each update. I love the app, but it’d be nice to see more attention paid to the development. A few issues: - Bookmarks don’t sync between the mobile and online apps (why this isn’t a feature I’m not sure, having continuity between them should be a given) - Copy and paste settings are failing on online application (even when settings have been unchecked, their corresponding setting still applies to the verses when they’re pasted) - Library items are not properly downloading and loading on mobile devices - Notes on the online application are only available when going to the user menu (I’d like to see them available when the “Notes” button is clicked, instead of only having them available when I’m on a certain passage of Scripture - Highlighting on the mobile app is a serious eye sore. Please make it so that it looks like the online application version of highlighting with multiple color options. When I’m highlight a verse in real life, I’m not highlighting the space surrounding the text, only the text itself. This sort of highlight should be on the mobile app.

Look is nice but reading plan is frustrating. As others report, the look of the interface is nice. You can also listen along. I use the search often, though I wish a cursor showed up when you click the search field. Instead you have to click and start typing whilst hoping you clicked the search field. However, the reading plan section needs an UPDATE! It seems to reset each day. I started a reading plan Jan 1 and set my preferences, but every day I go to the reading plan and it asks me to choose which plan and it doesn’t remember what day I’m on (not to mention what I’ve already read. ) I am reverting to a paper plan to read thru the Bible this year. :(

Disappointed. I was thankful to find this app because it allows me to stay in track with reading the Bible throughout the year. Apparently when the app updated the plan I was using was erased and all my progress along with it. I’m very disappointed. THANK YOU for addressing my concerns. One other thing is that while reading the passages for the day and scrolling to each passage it used to change to be able to see what passage I was in with out returning to the check off section. Please put that back in! Also, I like that it just shows today’s date because if for some reason I don’t finish the reading one day then it’s still there and there is not a feeling of being behind! Thanks!

Markups. Thanks for all that you do in providing an app for the translation of the Bible that has grown to be my favorite and the one I trust the most. I appreciate Crossway in many ways, especially for the resources that you provide that strengthen my walk. I enjoy the app but... When I read or am studying the word, I mark my Bible up, even using the app I love to highlight but I like to focus on key words within a verse that being a greater depth and meaning to the verse. A lot hinges on keys words, right? Even as I look at Piper and his videos, he is marking up the Bible where he is focusing on key words and phrases within the verse. It makes things standout and gives the already living Word more life. Yes, I can change the app I use and get a different app with these features but why? I trust Crossway and I don't want to go anywhere else. I'm committed to Crossway. Seriously! It's been life giving and has been a means of Grace in my life. Just please consider modifying the markups portion. Again, in all sincerity, thanks for what you do in leading us closer to the Lord. Mike

Heartbroken. I came here to say how sad I am with the new update. This is so unlike the ESV I know. I want a BIBLE APP, not a multi-media, subscription, account-based, confusing muddle. I can hardly use the reading plan anymore because it is buried and you can’t go back and forth easily from the text to the reading plan list. The reading plans have helped keep me faithfully in the word daily for three years now and now I’m not even sure if I will be able to use this app next year. The settings and even the text color have changed, and all settings and choices and options are far more limited than before. If things are available to be added, fine, but give users the ability to select which options they want rather than clouding everything up with playlists and restricted choices. I used to love the ESV app, and loved it for it’s simplicity because that focuses ON GOD’S WORD! I am heartbroken over these changes. Please add options for users to select whether or not they want certain content, and please restore previous choices and functions.

Wonderful! Except.... I’ve given this app 4/5 stars ONLY because since they’ve recently updated it, for some reason now my search does not work.. I can type in the verse I want to read (ex: Luke 1:1) but when I click the verse, it just takes me right back to where I was before the search.. Almost as if clicking the newly searched verse is as though I’m clicking the “back” button.. very frustrating. I’m in a bible study with a group of guys I work with so it is very important to have that work properly. It is more convenient to use my youversion Holy Bible app to do my studies now and there is no comparison between the two apps.. ESV is much better for my use and needs. This is my only complaint and the single reason for the 4 star rating. I fear if I delete the app and download it again, all of my progress and work will be lost so I’ve not tried that yet. Thank you for the otherwise wonderful app! No other issues except the one listed above.

The Update Crashes Repeatedly and.... I listened to the chronological plan every day and was in Jeremiah 34 before the update. After the update the reading plan reset. As I went through the new chronological plan to check off the days up to where I was I noticed that the reading plan is in a very strange layout. (You can do a chronology based on the dating of the text itself or on the events in the text.) There’s nothing chronological about this update. I tried to continue listening through Jeremiah but it only reads from the updated plan. There is no longer a text identifier on the play consul. There are some intriguing new reading plans but I loved the previous chronological plan. Hopefully Crossway will fix and change this. Without it I don’t have a use for the app.

Lost progress, but they restored it. This last update restored my progress in the chronological reading plan, loosing just what I had done since the last update reset it. Thanks for fixing this. Original post: Like the other reviewer mentioned, after the update, I lost all my progress in the chronological reading plan. It also changed a little bit, moving Job from sometime in Genesis to later in the Old Testament. The change is fine but it makes picking up we’re I left off impossible. I’m sure that a digital record of my progress is completely lost but it would be nice if, the next time an update like this occurs, they are a bit more careful with the migration. Last suggestion. The reading plan portion is kinda bloated after this last update. It would be much easier to navigate if there were sub folders or reading plans (“Thru the Bible”, “What to read when…”, etc.) Overall, a great app.

Falls short of the original ESV Study app. I do love the look of the new app, but where it surpasses other Bible apps in design it falls short in usability. I don't like how the reference passages pop up in a little window above the reference marker and that there is no option to view it in full size. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, there's no option to quickly and easily go back to the previous verse you were looking at (and the one before that, and the one before that, etc.). You have to go through the navigation panel at the top each time. Navigation was one thing the original ESV Study Bible app did beautifully and seamlessly. It was really an intuitive design perfect for studying. Also, the commentary of the Study Bible app is not included in this one, which leaves me confused as to why they said they were replacing the original app with this one? Also, I really don't get the reading plans layout (referring to 'Daily Light on the Daily Path' plan). Why are the verses in that order? Why are they all jumbled together as if they belong to one passage? Why are some verses repeated a few times? There really needs to be a "How To" section for the reading plans.

Interact?. This app is great, esp the ability to add notes to a verse and highlight. It would be perfect if it could sync my notes into my online ESV account... perhaps in a future update? Would have happily paid for it if it could do this, and give me the ability to see the study notes, perhaps a premium edition? Thanks

Great App. I have been using this app since it came out and it's great. It's easy to use and the UI is clear and uncluttered. If you are looking for a Bible App to use in church or just on the go, look no further than this one, you will not regret it.

UI isn’t great. Ever since the most recent update, the UI has been incredibly difficult to manoeuvre. 1. When you pull up the study Bible, you can’t scale it down - it only clicks halfway which is really annoying 2. The text doesn’t track with the study Bible when you use the two at the same time 3. The verses sometimes don’t appear when you click on them. The Bible component is great, but the rest isn’t anymore 😔 Please revert to the old UI!

Good refresh of the app. Using an iPhone 5, I did have issue where it crashed after updating the app, but having delete, redone load and update the app, it worked fine, good easy tutorial and still an awesome app!! :) wish they had an NIV version of this, I'd pay for it :)

Pretty Great. Love the latest update and the ability to access the online study bible which I couldn't access until now without a browser. My one gripe is that the highlighting and notes functionality is a little clunky. Hopefully this will be improved in the next update.

What happened to the Study version?. I’ve been using the ESV app for years as well as the ESV Study bible app. But the Study version is no longer supported on the latest iOS or in the App Store. This was a great resource. What happened to it?

Readability. Contrast or font weight is lower in this update. It makes it harder to read.

No verses. No verse numbers makes it hard to find what I’m looking for

Love this App - Great for Dyslexic readers. I am loving this app with the clear and uncluttered format of the bible. I have always struggled with reading due to dyslexic tendencies but this version of the ESV has changed everything for me. I can read more easily and spend hours soaking in God’s word and his truths. The layout and different options for font and background are great along with the ability to use different study bibles for further information. I love that I can highlight verses and write notes which can be downloaded from the web version if needed. The free version is great with access to reading plans and one study bible but the paid subscription is wonderful to have so many different study bibles and other resources for really digging deep into God’s word all within one app. Great for easy transport and everything syncs across different devices under your account. Thanks for such a wonderful app!! Only thing I’d like to see would be a choice of colours for highlighting but that’s not a deal breaker for me so 5 stars all round.

Everything you could need in a bible app. This is the cleanest, most efficient, satisfying bible app to use. Seriously great work team.

Wonderful. It's fantastic that a translation such as ESV is offered for free. THANK YOU CROSSWAY for the time and effort put into creating this wonderful app—which hasn't seen any flaws on the iPad. It is beautifully presented and worthy to put in the dock! It has a whole array of features. I particularly love the ease in which you can highlight write notes and add verses to favourites. Everything is crisp and elegant. Very intuitive—lets you get down to studying the Bible—which is exactly what I was looking for. It's a must have! Thanks :)

Changed. My update, I find expanding the verse to highlight very hard works sometimes only. Still trying to work out the icons in open box, Their usage is confusing. Would like a "how to" in app for help. I have been using this app for a number of yrs, why they had it start changing the menu etc is beyond thinking. I would have given it 5 stars before, but now I think 3 is all I would give it. Can't understand why you change a good app, unless you expect us to buy the $18+ one.

Okay but. Like it’s good but it doesn’t even support the iPhone X screen size, over a year later. Also my bookmarks don’t show up on the site on my laptop. Needs updating. iPhone X screen size is a must!!!

It does the job. Did you remove landscape mode? Screen orientation doesn't work anymore?

NEEDS MORE WORK. This app has great potential. At the moment however, its parts are not integrated. You can't go easily from a daily devotional back to bible reading without having to re-navigate to where you left off - there's no direct link. The daily devotional itself doesn't keep itself updated to the last one read: it has to be re-navigated from the beginning - and internally it's a shambles. Finally, the ESV Study Bible app (which was paid for) has been discontinued (replaced by this new ESV app), but the Study Bible features are not at all integrated in the new app. Overall, very disappointing at present, but it will be great once its shortcomings are rectified.

Most Ergonomic. I've used many Bible apps and this is by far my favourite. I'm a big fan of ESV and so being able to use the search function with this version has proved to be very useful. I haven't had any crashes or unexpected errors. In fact, this Bible loads faster and smoother than any other app I've used... Keep up the great work!

Gorgeous & intuitive app. Simple, elegant, and so intuitive! Perfect for those who can do without the clutter and enjoy the clean presentation, but still has all you could need tucked away for when you need it!

Resources are not as accessible. In landscape the larger resource maps and charts are on too small of a window and can't be used. Can you make it so the resource window can expand to the whole screen or the Bible can also take up the whole screen in landscape as well with an adjustable parallel windows in Landscape view? Also there is no way to get to the resources from the page view. Great first try. Thanks

Beautifully presented app.. This app is fantastic, and the resources available for such a cheap membership are abundant. I have one request from Crossway, as I like to read the Bible while listening to it, I would love if they gave more speed options (up to x3), as the 1.5x speed isn’t manageable to read alongside listening. Overall though, a wonderful app.

Review of paid Crossway ESV version. Pros: - browsing for a book or chapter is very easy, as is searching for an unknown verse with key words Cons: - there is no highlight color flexibility. It's yellow or yellow (I have the online ESV study bible and value it's multiple highlight colors) - I was most disappointed with the "Favorites" feature. There is only one folder. The flexibility offered (delete or re-order) is of limited value. - In the sales blurb it says: "Manage. Add, delete or reorder your verse favorites. Save your own user defined preferences" I hoped this meant flexibility with the Favorites feature. It doesn't. At this point I would stay with the free version. But, as long time users of the online ESV study Bible would know - Crossway released a major upgrade a year ago which had awesome features. I hope they add features of value to this. In particular, if there was an ability to add folders and sub-folders to the favorites feature this app would be priceless. Why? Imagine adding a folder for each book you are reading, or sermon series you are listening to, or even theology topic. Then add a sub-folder for each chapter or sermon. Then add verses as you read or listen. Then revise at will. This would be awesome. With more development this could be an indispensable application. At present there is little of added value over the free version. AndrewR of Sydney

Black screen. Please enable black screen/ reverse colour

Great App but not the new update. It’s a great app that I’ve been using for a few years now. Easy to use and well laid out with good extras. The newest update though has made the reading plans a lot harder to use, for a start it wiped all my data from the plan I was using so I had to start at the beginning again. It’s a good idea to start on the day the user starts using the reading plan. But since I had to tick about 2 months worth of readings I’d already done I’m now in mid April and so whenever I go back in it pushes me back to today’s date rather than where I’m actually up to. Also it would be good if the reading plans you use the most got moved up to the top of the list so you don’t have to scroll all the way down to get to the one you’re actually using.

Even though I love this app....... ....the update seems to have several issues where the app crashes and performs poorly. Crashes on 'add a note'. Opens Genesis 1 when trying to select other books. Scrolling through the books menu does not allow me to easily select the book of Revelation and it's chapters. I do wish I hadn't updated as my older version worked perfectly.

Disappointing update. The new updated app adds nothing (you actually lose things). Menu is harder to navigate much preferred the older grid version of books of Bible rather than multiple drop downs. Audio options are now limited to one? Why? A “library” that just shows the things you don’t have. Very confusing. Had to make a 2nd account for Crossway as it doesn’t carry over to ESV app. Frustrating all round. I’m unsure who the new app is marketing at & seems designed to make money rather than help people go deeper into the Word as it purports.

Fantastic ESV Bible App!. The iOS4 updated version works great! Really pleased that the generous publisher chose to release this tastefully designed reader for free. I went ESV because they made their text accessible online and this is just the icing on the cake for me! Thanks Crossway & Subsplash.

One 'Bug'. I love that you can finally bookmark verses, and that there is no longer a pop-up window, and instead, a small bubble menu for verse options. The design is great, however there is one thing that I find annoying - when in landscape view, almost half the screen is taken up by the store etc. Everything else seems perfect!

Suddenly glitchy. I used to find this app very useful indeed. I’ve been taking sermon notes on it, linked to the passage, for what seems like a decade. Sadly the last month or so it appears to have caught COVID and stubbornly refuses to all me to annotate Bible passages. Please (please) fix this soon, as I’d hate to lose so much valuable info…

Excellent Bible App. This is a smooth, well-designed app. The text is clear, the navigation is well thought-out and intuitive, and the functions are excellent. For a free app, it is outstanding. I would have happily paid for it! I love the way the text just scrolls on from one chapter to the next, and from the end of one book into the next. An all-round winner!

Beautiful. Powerful. Exceptional.. The team at Crossway have done an amazing job in creating the ultimate Bible app that is beautiful, easy to use and yet powerful enough to be used for serious study or preaching as well as daily reading. The new optional side-by-side study notes and Bible text is a great feature as well as the reader's mode with extra screen real estate (hidden verse numbers and reduced chapter number size) and verse-by-verse preaching / study mode. This was already my go to Bible app because I love the ESV translation, but it just got even better!

Love this app but it keeps crashing!. I have been following the daily lectionary on my iPad Pro. This app is great, easy to use, uncluttered, perfect for reading. The only problem is the app keeps on crashing when I open it the next day. I presume it’s a bug with app not returning to main screen when daily things change. When it crashes I have to delete and redownload and I lose all my highlights! This is a bit depressing. Please fix as it is a great app.

Linking full ESV Study Bible. Great being able to access my full Study Bible notes online via this app.

Amazing!. Why did it take me this long to discover this!? Combined with the cheap subscription and access to study and devotional bibles, reading and devotional plans and ability to highlights and take notes, this has transformed my study and devotional times. Thanks Crossway! My only request is please add more highlight colours, 2 or 3 more (like purple and yellow) would help with Study a lot!

Love it!. Thank you so much Crossway. This is amazing I can't believe that other ESV bible apps are selling for over 45 dollars when this is so good. Would be good if you could highlight part of a verse rather than the whole thing and different colour highlighting so you could have different colours meaning different things. (maybe these features are already available but if they are I haven't figured out how to use them). Thanks again!

Easy to use. Very easy to use, quick loading, and it works perfectly! As the person said below me a brightness option would be great.

Great cross reference function. Beautiful design and text

Good app, but can be improved. This is a great app. I love all the study features that are available on this app. Just an area of improvement: I like making multiple notes in a Bible app, and it's a bit annoying when the Bible app I'm using (this app) doesn't let me do that. Can you please make it so that you can add more notes to a particular passage? That would be amazingly helpful. :)

Elegant Bible app that does everything necessary. I'm pleased with the bookmarks, highlights and note taking ability (and I don't have to sign up for an account to use it). A major downside is that I can't export my notes, and I would also like to highlight a whole block of verses all at once. Otherwise, Crossway has made an elegant, straightforward app to complement the ESV translation.

Apple Pencil compatibility. Love the app, I use it a lot when I don’t have access to my physical bible. One feature that would be awesome is to be able to write notes, highlight and scribble directly using the Apple Pencil.

Good interface, and offline :D. I agree with another review I had read: it is a great modern interface. It is clean and does not distract, and also easily allows to you go to references! Something that I wish more software bibles did. Thank you Crossway for making it not just free, but with the text all offline. The speed of flipping between parts of the bible is appreciated, and is very mich less distracting compared to online ones. And a version that is good for bible studies to boot! :D

No bad I guess no the best but................................men. Not bad I guess but men are pretty cool

Battery. Awsome app, only problem is that it is always with a white background. Other bible apps have a function where you get a black background, and white or yellow lettering to save battery. Please take this into consideration. Other than that, EPIC APP

Simplest ESV Access. The app itself is nice enough, but the winner here is the content. The ESV Bible translation is one of the very best, and, although there are many ways to get the ESV, I have found this to be the most straightforward by far. My only gripe is a pretty trivial one: it’s only available in US English.

Bugs introduced. Used to be great, but the latest updates dumped my almost-complete Chronological Reading Plan. Also, the reading plan now doesn't allow the audio reader to work. It continually crashes when I change between the audio reader and the reading plan, and the interface for reading at ones own pace is clunky. A great example of trying to fix something that wasn't broken!

Finally- the app I've been looking for. This app is great. After searching through 10+ bible programs, including the popular you version and olive tree, my conclusion is that this is the app you need. Every time I downloaded a bible app, I almost instantly found something wrong with it. Bad translations, ugly layout, having to switch between chapters... by the time I searched for an ESV app, I'd practically given up. Luckily, I found this. As a fan of the ESV, the translation was fine. The price is non existent, and all viewing can be done offline. The layout is truly beautiful - it's not just easy or sleek - it's actually gorgeous. As for the customization, there isn't much. This isn't an issue however as scrolling and note taking is already perfect. Font size can be changed. Basically, this app is great. It's not the greatest study bible, but on terms of reading, it's unbeatable.

Amazing bible app. After many years using a different bible app, I recently switched to this app after falling in love with the ESV. This app is beautifully designed, has amazing functionality and amazing resources that are well worth the low subscription fee. I highly recommend it.

Great program!!!. This is an excellent bible reader, so easy to use. The only reason this is not five stars is that since upgrading to OS 4 there is a bug, so that I cant look at the verse details! Please fix! Otherwise it is great, and I hadn't had any other problems.

Doesn’t work on iPad in split screen view. Great app, but after I updated to iOS 11 I couldn’t open the app in split screen view. It kept freezing and sometimes forced the iPad to restart itself. Please fix.

Search functionality restored!. The ESV app has been great and I have used it for years. A recent update completely wrecked the search functionality and I posted a 1 star review. Perhaps others also complained - I don’t know. Credit to the developers - the latest update completely fixes the search function. When you go to search it shows you previous searches (even ones from before the last 2 updates). Once you are in a search you can click into a passage on the found list and see it in its context. When you go back to search it takes you back to your current search results so you can keep exploring that particular search term. WELL DONE - I am editing my 1 star review to 5 star. Have always loved the app and this update restores a very good feature.

I would recommended this for everyone. This app is great, I use to other apps but I find myself using this one most of the time. Could the developer please update the app for iPhone X please.

Needs lots of work. Frustrating app. Verse numbers aren’t showing up again. Not sure why they can have different highlighter colors. Love the ESV but this app is very poor. Seems like crossway is not interested in making it good. I have waited a long time for it to improve. I actually like the older version better.

Suggestion. Please, please, please! Add the ability to sort either favorite verses or highlights into folders. That would be incredibly helpful!

Bad update!. Apparently this was updated recently and now won’t open!

Love it! BUT. Love this bible app, so simple and minimal. But I would love it even more if it had the option for a Spanish version!

Help with devotional view. The bible itself is great but the devotional content is wider than the screen? Can’t find a way to scale this. Seems odd for such a well done app. I’m on iPhone 12.

Daily Reading good but some suggestions. It would be nice if the daily reading had a few more options... like automatically checking off what was listened to (not just read), and having the option for it to keep playing if you want to go through several days of reading plans worth at a time. Then setting up the home screen so that it doesn't take so many clicks to find where you left off before... just resumes where you left off. Otherwise really like the app. Maybe these improvements could come in future versions. Would also prefer the option to buy study resources instead of yearly subscription.

Notes from ESV Study + did not transfer. I called and emailed them regarding this problem and I have not heard from them since. 3 years of notes from ESV Study + is supposed to sync and transfer to the new ESV app when you first it but it didn’t. Disappointing

Great app overall! // Don’t bold body text! :). I love the app, especially for the Study Bible Commentary and following threads of in-verse-referencing. The body text was a normal, thin weight at first, then bold, then months later back to a normal weight. Now it’s back to bold! Body text should be a regular weight—it is much easier to read than reading large chunks of bolded text. Can you change the body text back to a normal reader-weight? Or at least make that an option? Thanks, – Chad

Needs to update to iOS14.5. This is my go to Bible and even bought the + version. Today after updating to iOS14.5, I get the message “The developer of this app needs to update it work with this version of iOS.” Looking forward to getting access back to this terrific app! Thanks soooo much! Many thanks to Rachel for the tech support I needed to get my ESV back! Best Bible app ever!

Best ESV Bible. I truly enjoy this Bible version

Loved it!. This app was everything I hoped it would be.

Please fix bug!. I've never had any issues with this app before. I love having it on my phone and all the features it comes with for free. In the past few days though, when I open the app, it shows the last page I was on for a second or two, then the screen goes black and the app automatically closes. Can you please fix whatever bug is causing this? I really miss being able to use this app!!

I love it! It’s quite exactly what I was looking for. The app is great; nice and simple, and less is more!! No clutter, very easy to navigate, very clear organization of Scripture, some customization options in the settings, and some wonderfully-dictated audio as well! ONE thing: I’d love to see a timer where I can set the audio to run for a specified amount of time for if I’m looking to fall asleep with Scripture, and not wake up at the end of The Bible lol. I highly recommend this app l to all. I love the little artpieces/emblems for each Book. Very elegant app! Thanks be to God :)

ESV Now not reading. The app is longer reading correctly. It is starting at genesis 1:1 and reads audio from there instead of reading from where ever you have the bible open.

Great bible app. I've been a user of this bible app since 2016. And I find that there still is no other application in its category with this degree of focus on a smooth reading experience and ease of use. Not only is the excellent design a delight to look at and use, it also doesn't skimp on functionality. Will keep using this as long as it is here. God bless your team!

Great bible. Works awesome love it

Text doesn’t fit screen. I like the ESV Bible and the resources available but I’m currently in a reading plan on my iPhone 7 and the paragraphing appears to be wider than my screen. I can’t adjust this. Please fix in next update.

Great app but.... This has to be the best free bible app there is. It's interface is very clean and simple. The only problem I have seems to be that when I upgraded to ios 4, the app crashes after startup. I tried reinstalling but it still crashed. Please fix.

Possible updates. Love the app. Would love to see the ability to highlight/underline only certain parts of a verse instead of the whole verse. Also the ability to save the reading plan so that it’s the first one on the list instead of having to scroll.

Disappointed. Very disappointed with the update and now being charged to hear the audio version with Kristyn Getty.

Love the app. Thank you. I love the app. Just two suggestions also mentioned by others: - most importantly please restore the note indicators. I have made many notes for myself connected to different passages. The notes are still there; but in a recent update the indicators all disappeared - the ability to underline parts of a verse instead of only whole verses would be nice Thanks again for developing this great app!

Bad update. What’s with the update? Now charging to hear certain readers. Are more people using it and you decided to make money off of it now?

Tuff to send a text message. This is a great app,at times I want to send some people who need a word from the holy book because their down & I find it really hard to do

Best app for bible reading!. It's great you can change the font and there's no annoying adds!

Perfect. I have been waiting for a bible app like this! It's perfect - not too complicated, modern and accurate! Love it!

Keeps crashing. It keeps shutting off and crashing, please fix this issue.

Design. Love the app - would like to see the ability to change text size and more font options, as well as iPhone X support.

Missing bible verses?!. Great app, except it’s missing bible verses! That’s rather alarming as I never thought to question the authenticity of the bible! Example: Matt 18: 11 ?!

Best Bible app available. For too long I used YouVersion, I no longer use it with its lack of teaching. This ESV Bible app is much more faithful to the biblical narrative. Also this app offers much better and deeper study methods which I value so much more. Soli Deo Gloria

Great App. My favorite Bible reading tool.

New ESV Bible app. Difficulty in finding library and study notes on iPhone 6. Disappointed in the access. The ESV study provides more. Waste of money and resources

Love This Version. I am loving listening to this wonderful version. Krysten Getty is my chosen narrator. And what fantastic blessing God has provided with her talent. After listening to quite “stiff”, (sorry) high-church sounding male narrators for years, it is such an amazing paradigm shift to have a delightfully warm voice with such a compassionate, empathetic tone. It is the tone of God’s gentle Spirit.

Needs fixing. I love having the ESV bible app, however have been disappointed to find the ends of verses missing multiple times. Please fix these problems.

Best. Bible. App. Ever.. Love how easy the reading plans are to use. Accessing extra works perfect. I am finally pulled away from the original ESV study bible plus app. because this is the Do Everything bible app the ESV deserves.

Looking for carry over. Very happy with the function of the app. Lots of cool tools. But I would love it if you would set it up so that when I get a new phone I don’t lose all the notes I’ve made in the app, along with all of my highlighted passages. Couldn’t we have that saved somewhere?

A blessing, but I have a little complaint.. Actual blessing to everyone, God has used saints to share His holy word, it’s the best item in the world. Though with the app, when I copy a verse it does not add “ “ quotation marks automatically when I paste it. Thank you God bless you sincerely, for your work to honour our Lord.

Works great!. Love using the app! Can't listen on audio while offline but I can read which is what I mainly use the app for. Super easy to read!

Beautiful But Dictionary :(. This is a really beautiful rendition of the bible. Only thing is, and this is a big one for me, the developers chose to make the usual press-and-hold feature into a highlighter instead of the usual dictionary lookup. One of the reasons I like reading on an iPad is that i can look words up on the fly but this unfortunate feature defeats the purpose.

Solid.. A very good choice for anybody looking for a Bible app. 10/10

Data harvesting app. Unfortunately this bible app harvests your private data . Once I knew this I deleted this app. Any company claiming to be a Christian company and collects your private data is not Christian.

Great app!. Thanks for the fixes! But there’s still a problem with the highlighting

Nice, clean, simple Bible App. Thank you so much for this app. No ads, just a nice, clean, simple Bible app. Nice little features for highlighting, favoring, and writing on specific verses. Very grateful, thank you.

Preferred the older app. The old ESV Study Bible was much easier to use. Is the old ESV Study Bible app still available for downloading.

My favourite bible app. Love the font and design and commentary. My only complaint is all the new buttons you have to scroll through to reach the commentary.

I love the audio bible feature.. I also love how you can customize the Bible layout to your liking.

Best Bible app. The only thing better than this app is a paper Bible

Review. App can not jump to different books when trying to listen to different sections during same listening session I phoned Crossway to report problem but they have not corrected problem. I now use gateway and it works fine. The people at crossway must not use their own app Signed by a disappointed user

No verse numbers on iPad app. Love the app but been waiting for verse numbers to show up in updates. Otherwise, Ive given away my physical ESV study bible because this app is so great! Thanks for your work!!

Love it!. Great app! Simple and elegant. Very stable and doesn't glitch. Highly recommend.

New update. I love this app. 1 thing I miss from a previous version was the ability to read within the footnotes more than just the specific verse. Being able to read the whole section from within. The smaller box really helped my study :) made it the perfect study Bible app

Overall love the app. Overall I love the app - recently however, the app has not been keeping accurate track of my reading progress in one of the studies. I am reading the Bible in a year chronologically, and it lost my place. So now I have to go in and scroll every time to the correct spot. I tried to go through and check off ones I had done (after my spot was initially lost), but after I finished, my spot was lost again. This is the first time I am having an issue however - it’s overall a great app.

Great App and a question. Love this app and have been using it for some time. I have noticed a discrepancy in my printed version and the digital one in Ephesians 1:5. The digital version adds “to himself” after “In love he predestined us for adoption.” It gets a little confusing as my kids and I are memorizing this passage and sometimes one of us will use the app while the others are using our printed version. Would love to see this corrected if this is an error. Thanks!

Great app all around. This Bible app is by far my favorite not only because my favorite version of the Bible is ESV but also because of how easy it is to use. I also love how sleek and modern the design of the app is. Listening to reading plans is very helpful as they had personalized plans based on what you want to read, this can help you stay accountable and consistent one reading the Bible.

A very nicely designed app. This is a very nicely designed app, which makes this fine translation easily accessible. The online audio readers are a joy to listen to. The app scrolls the text as they read. Mine criticism of the app is that the fonts have low contrast with the background, so the text is a little harder to read than it needs to be. A really good app that makes it easy to pause your day and read/hear the scriptures.

Reading plans need help. I like this app and the variety of choices for reading plans. But There’s a big “but”, when you start one and the next day you have to go looking for it again. You don’t have a way to find your plan or you to at least have it on top of the choices. I almost forgot which one I chose until I remembered the pic. I had to scroll and scroll. Not a good way to keep up. It will make me lose interest if I have to scroll way down every day to find it.

Amazing content but needs more text/viewing options. I really wish this app had more options for text preference. Such as: more fonts besides serif, ability to make words even bigger and adjust line spacing. These options come in real handy for those who struggle with dyslexia and attention regulation. I absolutely love the ESV but always read it on you version or for this reason and the scroll over to the ESV app to consult study notes as needed.

My go-to Bible app. I really like this app and use it a lot, especially since my church uses the ESV in our services. The design is simple and elegant—without all the cluttered features or advertising of other cram-it-all-in Bible apps. I use and like the reading plans. Several reviews lately have complained about plan progress getting erased—that happened to me too—but it has been addressed and fixed in a timely manner. My emails to support have always been answered. Thank you Crossway for this great free app!

Skip this updated app. The ESV bible app was one of the best bible apps. But after some updates, it is no longer an app for me. They want/require an account now to use it. Now there is a sidebar taking up half the page asking for your information if you use it horizontally. Now they constantly ask for you to give them name and email and I’m sure it becomes worse once they have your email and other information in order to sell you more Crossway “stuff.” Sorry, I cannot recommend this app, Youversion bible app does just as wel… for free. There are other apps that are free (limited) but without being in your face for payment or your personal information. Skip this app.

This app not user-friendly. My wife and I have tried using this app for a little while. There doesn’t seem to be a user-friendly way to switch between books of the bible, as far as I can tell you have to manually type in and search for your query whereas the other popular apps have a table of contents. Additionally, the app recently went through an update and deleted the reading plan I was in the middle of. Top that with the fact that any time you want to go to the plan you’ve been using you have to scroll down to where it is, there’s no favorites or saved button. I don’t think I’ll be using this app long.

Newest Update makes study bible less useful. This app used to be great, but no longer being able to quickly go to the contents of a study bible, and pick a book and chapter to read (it only allows you to read the notes for the chapter that is opened) is a big mistake and is very frustrating to deal with. I like to look up study notes for multiple verses without changing the main text of what I’m reading. Adding to my frustration is the fact that my study notes think I’m in Exodus 24 no matter what I have opened so now I can’t read any notes because I can’t manually change it. Please fix this...

Lovely app, would be nice if it updated more than once a year. By far this is my favorite Bible app. Super pretty, simple, fast, not bloated like most of the other ones. Only downside is they update about once per year. I’m not asking for weekly or monthly builds... just whenever iOS updates, sometimes it does things like make the fonts ugly and bold, an update that fixes them would be lovely. Like the one you guys just pushed, gave iPhone X full screen and fixed the fonts!

ESV. How would you rate a message “High Traffic Volume “ ? For over eight years I have listened to the Bible being read to me by a man. To hear a woman voice disrupted my routine. Two days I stumbled upon I could change it back to the man. Today I wake and discovered,”Sorry, we’re experiencing heavy traffic right now. Please check back soon. I am not happy about not being able to use my audio Bible. However, I am rejoicing that so many people are seeking GOD so early in the morning!

Unhappy with latest updates. I’m so disappointed with not being able to read the Bible in full screen while using landscape mode on my iPad. I dislike like having to use the split screen while reading, it is very distracting. A Great Big Thank You for giving us a way to hide the side bar in landscape mode on our iPads. So much better to be able to read the scriptures in full screen.

Audio reading problems. I'm trying to do the "Daily Reading" plan by listening to the audio version. When I go to my current day it shows each passage for that day but as I'm listening to it it gets all screwed up! If the days calls for 2 chapters of Genesis, then a chapter in Psalms and then a chapter in Matthew it will read the two chapters in Genesis and then keep going with a third! It's so frustrating because I have to keep going back to the day and clicking on each selection. Waste of time. Wish it read the day's selection in its entirety and I could stop wasting my time :(

Bug Report. I have an iPhone and the audio read through keeps bugging out and just stops reading after like 12 verses then it pauses. If you press play it just endlessly plays the last verse it read when you press play. I think this used to happen here or there a while back but it was random or when you switched from wifi to cellular but now it is constant. (plus if you could add a way to download the audio read along in the app so people could access on planes , hiking, and road trips.) Thanks, have a great day!

Simple features now require account to use. I’ve been using this app for several years. I enjoyed the simplicity of it and didn’t need that additional resources provided. Following the recent update it is no longer possible to see reading history or to highlight passages without creating an account. What possible reason could there be for this other than to coerce people into creating an account that they may not want otherwise? I’m sure your marketing team thought this was a great idea, but in reality it just plays as a hostile move toward your users.

Good until recently. I have used this ESV Bible app for daily reading for nearly three years. For that daily reading I read chapters from 4 different books each day. It has worked fine in the past, however, recently the “History” option has not been reliable. Until the end of August the history of the most recent passage viewed, would update every time I changed to a different book. Something apparently changed in September, because in October the History would update only after I closed and then re opened the History tab. Now today, the History is not updating at all. What is going on?

Bible. This is the best Bible app out there ( I’m a little bias toward the ESV)! The simplicity of the app I enjoy so much I don’t need in the bell and whistle or chatter. I just need the work and this app delivers. The vertical continual scroll the the whole Bible is a huge bonus, allowing flow from one chapter to the next, one book to the next. I much prefer real paper Bible and I have many in all translation but this is the best app for me, with keeping it easy and straightforward, Papa God word.

Strike three pending.. Update, third strike 😒 — Recent update *removed* Ms Getty’s voice option and put it behind a paywall. What gives?! 40$ a year is the cost. Subscription models are taking over, and this situation (just want one voice unlocked) shows how inane they are. —— old review , issue did get resolved. —- This is a good app, and can get you anywhere in the Bible in two clicks. It's light and nimble. However, after an update that gives a crash immediately and then another that supposedly fixed it, but doesn't, I think ESV is headed for strike three.. :/

My MOST used Bible App. I use this app everyday for Bible reading/listening. It has also become my primary app for quickly looking up verses while taking with friends or listening to sermon/lecture. I have recently started using it more while reading books with Scripture references. Simple & clear interface makes this my most used Bible app of the 4 on my phone.

PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING. Do you know how hard it is, to find someone who reads the Bible out loud in the correct way??!! THIS GUY is one of THE BEST. (He’s the ESV reader of the Holy Bible app; the one where the guy doing the KJV is WAAAAAAAY too theatrical.) I love this app, this guy deserves his own so I’m beyond thrilled to have found it! Another fave is the Daily Audio Bible! (I’m actually listening to the CHRONOLOGICAL version & its AMAZING!!!) I do wish there was a way I could slow down the speed in which he speaks. Other than that, it’s perfect! Thank you!!!

Update seems to be working well again problem have to reload it daily to use. SEEMS TO BE FIXED! This is a great app when it works. ****I have used this for quite a while but lately (a couple months?) It initially shows the last reading from the previous day then the screen goes black and all I can do is delete the app and reload it. Discouraging! Please fix it because it was great before this started happening.

Excellent cross referencing. I have used a few of the Bible apps from Logos to Life bible app, and have been impressed by their handling of cross references. The way that the ESV app allows you to scroll the entire chapter of the cross reference, not just the specific passage, has been the best experience that I have had so far. Also, returning back from a full click through is seem less and smooth.

Psalms. I have enjoyed the ESV Study Bible for more than two years now. The notes and commentaries are instructive and inspirational. I am currently reading Psalms and am disappointed that it does not seem to reach the same level. Could you still enrich the Psalms commentaries? Also I was surprised to see in the introduction of Romans that the committee adopted the idea of Paul wanting Rome as a missionary base. Actually it was normal for the churches to “help people on their way”, attested to in at least two other texts - 1 Corinthians 16:6 and Titus 3:13.

Recent update restored quality features!!. I love this app for reading the Bible! It is simple, yet powerful. For the last few years, some of my favorite features were not working (missing footnotes and quick linking to other passages). Recently these became available again, which makes this my go-to app for daily reading and quick reference! Thank you so much for continuing to improve this app! :)

Something has Changed!. This is a great app for the ESV Bible, but I used to be able to put notes under a passage and it gave me a notation that there was a note to it. Now, I can add a note, but there is no indication of there being a note. I cannot put a heart or flag it, either. Nothing happens, nothing changes. To me, this makes all these extras useless. I love having the ESV at my fingertips, so I have given you 4 stars instead of 5. I will change it to 5 if it changes back to how it was.

New home page layout in landscape mode for iPad. The new home page layout for iPad in landscape mode makes it so the scripture doesn’t fill the screen. You are forced to live with a panel on the right side that contains playlists, reading plans, and other things. Totally ruined landscape layout. And for us older folks who need to have the text fill the screen to see it well, this just doesn’t work. Wish they would make it an option rather than forcing it on us.

Reading Plans Issues. Love the idea of this app, especially the Bible reading plans. But I wish I could select the first passage in my reading plan and the app would follow along to the next reading plan passage. Right now it keeps keeps reading the Bible and doesn’t indicate when it passes my reading plan passage, or even give me chapter numbers aloud. Makes it really hard to stop, close my eyes, and meditate on the Scripture. I have to pay attention to when the passage is over to stop it then find the new one and click that.

New update fails, otherwise love.. The update is not as user friendly and is not allowing notes to be made. When you select a paragraph and attempt to put a note the screen is blank- no keyboard pops up. I do however like the new feature where you can highlight in different color options. Otherwise I have been using this app to read the Bible for the first time, it is very transparent in is translation.

Missing words in Devotionals. I have been using this app for the past few years so that I always have easy access to my Bible, which is very helpful. Recently I have discovered that while reading through the scripture study devotionals, sentences just quit, without really finishing. This often happens at the end of a sentence that also ends a paraph and it leaves the idea unresolved. Specifically I have noticed this on the 5 Solos and Systematic study sections, but I'm guessing there are more. Please fix.

Appreciate this App. I love this app! It has been beneficial to my walk with the Lord. I use this app daily and just purchased the yearly subscription with commentaries. I greatly appreciate the fact I can have all these resources at my fingertips without the need for internet. I would love it even better though if I was able to look at a commentary in the left (large) portion of the app in landscape view and the scripture in the right (toolbar) portion in landscape view.

Great for reading and studying. The study bibles are a great value and quick to switch between while staying on the same page. If you’re looking for a Bible app, it’s either this or YouVersion. There are not many cons to this app, mainly just wishes. One being better ease of use with notes, not that it is a bad feature but could be better integrated.

Digging In!. I have only been a Christian for 10 years. I’m now 67 and have studied Gods word for 10 years. Many different study tools and suggestions I tried and none are any better than the study resources available in this study Bible. I’m learn more about how to utilize all the things the hardback has that I’m sure are in this app. Love It!! Get the app and use every tool in it! I would give it a 10 but it only had 5 stars😳

My Plan added. This had always been a great app. However, one great aspect which has also been a bit of inconvenience is the awesome number of reading plans. If you pick one, you used to have to scroll down through all the plans to get back to the one you were reading. The new update now has My Plan which instantly takes you back to the one you are reading. Great job! Highly recommend.

Nearly perfect. I think this OS one of the best Bible apps available. 1. The ESV text is an excellent translation, 2. The app is simple to use, 3. It can read out loud and the reading speed is customizable, 4. I really like David Cochran Heath reading voice. When you have it read, it reads continuously until you stop. I’d like to be able to select a set of verses to read or read just one chapter and stop.

Love the app, what a blessing.. Thank you so much for this app! Especially adding Kristyn Getty. Would you mind to please fix the bug where (at least for me) you are listening to multiple chapters and when one chapter comes to and end it will revert back to the beginning of that chapter vs continuing on to the next chapter as it should. Pls let me know if I can help in any way. Thank you.

Glitches in the update. I love the esv app! I love the reading plans and have been reading the chronological plan. I appreciate how it automatically keeps track of where I am. However, I don’t love the new update. It didn’t synch my reading plan and my place there with the update. I also very much do not like that I can’t use the study guide or see the time if I’m reading in the plan. Please fix these bugs so I can keep using this app and recommending it to friends! It’s a great tool and has been simple to use (in the past) and beautifully designed as well.

I own full Logos yet I use this app most. This is really solid and I’ve been using it ever since it came out. One of my favorite things is when I bought a physical copy of the ESV study bible I received free access to the digital version on the web, turns out that the study Bible is also accessible in this app in a very intuitive way. I own the full version of Logos for Seminary but that app is way to slow on the phone. I’m very impressed with this app, especially since it’s free or max the cost of digital books purchased.

Broken reading plans. Today’s app update lost all my history on passages already completed on my reading plan. Had to start at the beginning of the year and mark each day as completed one by one. And if that is not painful enough it is made worse because if you don’t exactly hit the minuscule circle the app takes you to the passage rather than mark the passage as read. Had to use the tip of my pinky and even then only half of the time did it hit the pinpoint mark. Took forever to get everything back to how it should be. Also M’cheyne plan now has gaps in the plan (e.g. Genesis 35-36 is missing)

Quality and delightful Scripture app. Crossway has always had a high standard for excellence and their ESV app demonstrates this on the mobile level. Yes, occasional glitches occur but when using a mobile application that should be expected. Readers mode is a joy and having the study notes in a portable package is a game changer. I cannot recommend Crossway, the ESV translation, and this app enough. Come feed on the Word of God!

Poor changes. I was disappointed to find that in the newest version of this app I do not have the option to read the text full screen when I turn my iPad horizontal. As soon as I do, I get this side bar menu that takes up almost half the screen. There appears to be no option to hide this side bar other than to turn the iPad vertical again. It would seem an option to hide the menu would be pretty simple and logical. Apparently not. I just want to see the Scripture. If I need the menu I can select it. I don’t need to see it constantly. Just my opinion. Maybe it doesn’t bother anyone else.

Update Issues. The newest version is frustrating to use. It now loses my place every time I open the app, necessitating going into History to find where I left off reading. Moreover when I search for a word and tap on a verse containing that word there is no longer a “back” option that will let me get back to the list of verses containing that word—I have to retype the word I was searching for and start all over. I’m about ready to uninstall and switch to a different app. And I’m not even talking about the fact that they paywalled previously free audio Bibles….

Awesome. Awesome app! I can search for words found throughout the ESV Bible, no need for a concordance. I would like to be able to download the audio bible so I don’t burn data while listening while driving. If they could also add different playback speeds that would be great, the normal is just to slow and the fast is just to fast. Five speed options would be better than 3. Other than those improvements, a great, bug-free app! Great layout, pleasant to read, easy to find any book, chapter, or word I am looking for.

Favorite feature makes app shut down. I love this app and have used it since I started using the ESV version of the Bible a few years ago. One of my favorite features is that when you look up a passage, there are cross-references that come up when you press on the italicized numbers or letters. However, I tried to use it today and to my dismay, the app closed out as soon as I pressed on one of those italicized numbers or letters! I’m so sad because I love reading the passages related to verse that I’m reading. If it is a glitch, please fix it so I can redownload this app on my phone!

Issues since 3.4 release. ***Updated review - updated to version 3.4.9 *** All issues resolved! Thanks! I love this app and use it daily. It is my most used app. Thank you for the constant improvements. However, I’ve had some issues since the latest version update: *The search results when tapped don’t actually present the verse sought but merely navigate to the text currently open *The feature to scroll text with audio stopped working *The audio only plays where it last left off, not where you are currently reading, no matter what navigating to try to refresh *There is sometimes trouble with highlighting where the text is not immediately shown as highlighted *In general feels glitchy, etc. - I use this app on an iPhone 5s with the most up to date iOS

Getting progressively worse. I really enjoyed doing the ESV Bible in a year reading plan; the study Bible notes worked perfectly all last year. However this year one update made it so you have to scroll through the whole chapter to get to the verse you’re looking for and now in the latest update it’s stuck in Samuel—no matter where you are in the Bible it won’t let you look at it. I hope you guys can can fix these glitches; maybe just scroll back to an old version.

God drew me to the ESV Bible. God drew me to the ESV Bible then went to check out the website and discovered this cool app. 8/3/17 was my 46th birthday... I use to never celebrate my bd for 45 yrs felt I was a mistake but through worship learned I was chosen by Jesus Christ for this life not the biological parents that told me I never should've been born. Born again in 1996 the person I was died and I'm a new Godly woman. God draws me to the things, people & places that are of truth and continue to help me grow in my Faith. Definitely a must share because we as Christians know we must spread seeds of hope. 🙏🏼

Downloaded Resources Disappear. I have plenty of space on my iPad but for some reason the app always instantly deletes the Preaching the Word commentary if you navigate away from it and open up another resource. So, when I go back to access that commentary series, it always prompts me to re-download, even if I just downloaded and accessed it 10 seconds ago. Tried deleting the app and reinstalling but that worked for a day before it started glitching again. Otherwise, I love this app. Would be great if you could annotate within the app using an Apple Pencil!

Solid app, has a few issues with multiple books. For general bible reading this is a solid app. Easy to move around and the design is very pleasing to the eye. When opening a second book though, like the ESV Study Bible Notes, it is tricky to get both showing in the screen at once, and very difficult to go anywhere in the Study Bible notes that isn’t related to a verse, and the ESVSB has a lot of good articles to read. You just cannot easily navigate to them.

An old complaint still applicable. Unless I’m missing something, this is the only Bible app that I know of that when you tap to go to a specific location in the Bible, it takes you only to the book and chapter. There is no way to get to the specific verse. For instance, if I wanted to go to Genesis 5:8, I could only tap on Genesis and then 5, and that would take me to Genesis 5:1. There is no option to tap on a verse. Of what use is this? What if I was wanting to study Psalm 119 with its 176 verses. Am I wrong? Do I have to change a setting somewhere? (Yes, I am aware that I could use the search function by typing “Gen. 5:8”, but this takes so much more time.)
