Great alternative to expensive guide books. Pretty cool idea. Considering a lot of tourist guide books for the iPhone cost $16 per city, this is a pretty cheap way of finding out about the interesting spots in a city. So far I've used it in the San Fran bay area and it's worked great. If you're a history buff or if you just want a cheap guide book alternative, I'd say check it out.

Adjunct. And Problems... Solved!. The disappearing menu bar glitch is fixed. Stable through flick and pinch. If the database is (in)correct, it would have more to do with the national database and the software author's transcription. Using this app, my Texas history app and a good wiki app, the landscape sparkles with jewels of historic beauty. ---old review below-- I do not travel extensively in the Unites States. I cannot attest to the absolute accuracy of this App. In a recent trip to coastal Georgia and South Carolina I found the locations to be rather accurate and numerous. However, it does not and cannot provide the location of every state and local historic designations because it does not resource every database. From that standpoint, I like this app and certainly understand it has limits. The most irritating aspect in its operation is the the bottom menu bar will disappear with continued use. This requires I quit the app, launch and then re-locate my position. After a couple inquiries, the Menu Bar is again lost. Too bad If this niggling problem were corrected, the app would garner a four to five star rating

Great app!. I've always loved historical markers and so was excited to find this app! It's been a great way to learn about local history and read markers while traveling without having to stop for each one. Never encountered any major problems with the app and the updates have made good changes.

Educational, But Lacks Area Search Feature. This seems like an obvious and crippling exclusion -- the ability to search for markers in a specific locale from another location to learn about it, perhaps in anticipation of a visit or as a student. Otherwise, the information is intriguing and I've learned some surprising things about my area.

I love this app!. I've really enjoyed using this app. It's pretty simple, you scroll around the map to see the location of historical markers and you click on the pins to see more information. Yes, not every marker is in their database (I can't see how this could ever be possible) and the app has crashed on me under heavy use, but neither fact takes away from the fact that I've gotten a ton of use out of this app and it only cost me $2. The developer also seems to be quick about fixing bugs and posting updates, which is a plus. Some of these more recent reviews are pretty idiotic. Do you really need typical usage scenarios for a mapping app? Also, I've found nothing wrong with the English and grammar in the descriptions. I definitely recommend this app.

History in the palm of your hand. Explore places right down the street from you, or use it when you're on vacation in an unfamiliar area. Either way, I love this app. I have a feeling I'm going to be checking out a lot more of these places now that I have locations and descriptions. What a great US history lesson!

Misses so many. I like the format. But we pass many markers that don’t appear in the app. Going to look for a more complete listing

Great App - Makes Road Trips Fun!. This app is awesome. I always wanted to stop and read the historical markers, but not enough to impact my travel time. Now I get to read (or have them read to me when driving) the markers while traveling. Although this apps database doesn't contain all historical markers, it has had most of the markers I have seen while traveling. Over the past 6 months, I have read a lot interesting historical tidbits that I never would have seen without this app. I would recommend this app to everyone. Version 2.1 was great, and now version 2.2 doubled the database of markers. Keep up the good work.

Wish I could count my markers!. My husband and I are trying to get all of the California markers. We have about 150. I've got a nice little spreadsheet keeping track of our progress. It would be so nice if this app let you mark stuff you've seen, and maybe earn stars for accomplishments like clearing out a county or doing the first 20 or doing one in every county/state. I would so pay a couple of bucks to support that!

Almost five stars but...... I would have given this app 5 stars if it had two more functions which I was told by the app creator that it was coming up. However it never has. It needs a "been there" option so you can mark off and keep track what markers you have seen. The second is a "favorites" section. If it had those two functions, I would give it a 5.

Terrible. Crashes. Not worth the money.

App works as advertised. I have to second some of the comments below. The app is working great for me. Exactly what I was looking for. Currently visiting Northern Virginia and there are, obviously, tons of markers around here. Just discovered, for example, that Mosby's Rock is located within walking distance of my current location. Will have to check it out!

Lots of potential but no data. The idea for this app is great, but the program doesn't really seem to have gotten off the ground. I was driving highway 50, which has a historical marker every few miles, and only one of them was listed with data about the marker in this app. Some of the markers showed up as pins on the map of this app, but did not contain any information about the site. Some of the pins indicating a marker was present wouldn't even open. What a bummer. If they can get the information on the sites uploaded, and some of the problems with opening new pages, this will be a great app.

Does exactly as advertised with accuracy. I use this app to target good sites for metal detecting. Not the actual landmark, of course, but in the vicinity . I wish the cache was increased so that more pinpoints would load at a time, as I have found that by reloading grids sometimes displays additional landmarks, even when done at the same zoom. Still, the app has been perfect for what I use it for.

The app is fixed and working great!. Looks like the v3.4 update fixed the bug that everyone has been reporting in the comments. I wrote the author last week and got an immediate response saying that he was working on a fix. Forutnetely, the update came in just in time for the 4th of July weekend! In any case, this is one of my favorite road trip apps and I can't recommend it enough. Please keep up the good work!

Great app, but needs an update!. This app is great, but it needs an update—there are almost 100k historical markers in the database now and the app only shows around 75k.

Best of the history apps. I've tried just about every historical marker app on the app store and this one is by far the best. It's easy to use and works as described. I'm using the app with my iPhone 7 with iOS 10.1 and it seems to work fine, so not sure what all the negative comments are about.

Great app, works as advertised!. This app works great for me. I don't know if these one star reviews are fake or what, but I've never had a problem using this app and I do have an iPhone 3G. The pins appear as expected and everything works as advertised. I also love the new layout in version 2.0. My only suggestion would be an exclude filter, which would show all markers BUT the ones I want filtered out, otherwise I'm very happy with the app. The app definitely gets a 5 star rating in my book.

Abandoned app. The app is no longer being updated and doesn’t work well on iPhone XR.

Historic markers. I gave this a one star rating three days ago noting some missing information and a reference problem with links to the national registry. It is now Tuesday and the update posted today fixed both problems. That's truly impressive!!

Disappointing - crashes constantly. Crashes every single time a location historical marker is selected. Every. Single. Time.

Great app. My wife and I enjoyed using it this past weekend in Hunterdon County NJ. It worked great! The only feedback was that it would be even better if we could 'check off' the markers we visited and print off a report when done for the day and then pick up where we left off next time around.

I paid for this???. So the app doesn’t work, any markers you’re interested in, when you click on the map for info, the app force closes, want to go into settings, nope, app force closes. Don’t buy this app.

Very helpful. We downloaded this app to use on a long roadtrip. I loved not having to stop at every historical marker but still getting the info. I also used it to look ahead and see if there was a reason to stop.

What happened here? fanatic!. Great app! Although not all markers are listed (this would be impossible to keep up to date), there are enough to keep things interesting. Now if the NPS would just digitize the national register apps, it would be fabulous. Hours of fun for the out and about history lover!

Good, but bug.... I was excited to get the app today but discovered a major flaw. Every marker I click on pulls up an almost invisible bubble outline. It took me a while to even see it and then took much longer to realize these bubbles are suppose to be text filled to allow me to see what I clicked. Clicking on the near invisible bubbles does take me to the desired page, but the process is needlessly difficult. Either clicking on the marker itself should open the page, or the bubbles should be more obvious with text. Can this please be fixed, as it is clearly a bug? Thank you. *As a side note, I have sent this as an email to support and have since gotten 3 “failure to send” notifications over the past week. This means the email you have set on the support page does not work properly.

Can someone make this better please?. I do a lot of driving around the country and don't have the time to stop at these historical markers. I would love an app that actually had some info. I thought that maybe by now the creator would have improved or updated his data, but NO just names and cords for almost all. Sad to say but not even worth $0.99. Don't feed this guy any more $ till he produces.

Love the update!. I highly recommend this app. No performance issues, sleek appearance, and the updates are great! I live in a very historical area in VA and love that I can mark where I've been. This app has certainly come a long way. Bravo!

The best is about to get better!. Several years ago, this was such an amazing resource for reading about state and national-level historical markers. Simple and easy to use. It’s been a long time since the last update, but there’s a new one coming soon!

Good, but needs update. This app is sufficient for my needs and I have found a lot of markers I would of otherwise not known. However the app is very buggy and clearly needs and update though it is mainly usable.

Exactly what I was looking for!. Driving along, we didn't have time to stop at a historical marker - seems signs never give enough notice when driving 55 mph. I thought to myself, hmmmmm.....I wonder if there's an app for that, and sure enough! Only a mile down the road I knew what the historical marker was for. Also found out the cemetery where my grandparents are buried has a historical marker! Never knew that before! Thanks so much for a great app! We love this type of info as we're driving. 😊

Saving my relationship!. I like to drive to get where I going...my significant loves history...now she is happy because she can tell me when to slow down! Great app for Any history buff

One of my favorites!. I rarely review apps, but this one has really been a pleasure to use and has quickly become one of my favorites. Being able to see pictures of the markers has been a great improvement over the previous versions. It’s just been a lot of fun all around.

Great idea but the app needs to fix some bugs. I’ve had a very difficult time getting the markers to open when tapping on the pin on the map. Some open the first time while many others don’t open at all. If this is resolved I’ll be much happier as I love the idea of this app

Disappointed. Downloaded this while driving through Texas/south towing our RV. The roadside historical markers were of interest but not practical to pull over for. Figured this app would be the answer, not so much. We've reached NV now and finally it has some roadside markers that show up for us to read while driving by. Needs additional roadside entries.

Won’t Work. I have had this app for a few years. I can no longer open any links. My phone is new and software is kept updated.

Thanks for originally pioneering this idea;. It’s still a great idea; sorry it turned out to be unworkable to maintain. Sure was a step up from low at official state highway maps for approaching markers or worth a detour… Helpful while it worked; deleting the excess 2.5M … Thanks for trying 3* for a good idea that worked for a while years ago

Great app for road trips. I love this app and the 2.0 update has only made it better. I use the iPhone version for road trips and play with the iPad version when I'm at home. The iPad version in particular is really fun to browse, as the interface is clean and intuitive. I wish there were more apps on the app store that were this useful for a dollar.

Extremely Useful App!. I love this app. I just completed a cross-country road trip along I-80 and managed to read the marker descriptions of sites throughout my trip. The marker information appears to be stored locally, so I could even access the information when I was out of cell reception. Well worth my $0.99. Keep up the good work!

This app works great.. Historical Markers has proved to be a wonderful travel companion. I use it to find interesting facts about a location whenever I travel to a new part of California. The app does in fact work exactly as advertised, despite the claims of some of the negative reviews below. After reading some of the one star reviews, it seems clear that this app has been hit by a negative trolling campaign, most likely by a competitor. Ignore the fake reviews, it's a nice little app with a lot of info and it's only $0.99.

Update Fixed Recent Bug With iOS 10. The most recent update fixed the bug that prevented the app from being used in iOS 10 that people are complaining about in the comments. I've used the app on and off for a few years and the developer has always been quick to fix these kinds of problems. Overall it's a fun app if you like hunting for historical markers.

Poor design. No obvious way to use the app. No instructions. No typical usage scenarios. Does not appear to have any push functionality at all - which makes it worthless unless you want to drive down a road trying to watch your iPhone screen at the same time in case you drive up on a historical marker - and as far as I can tell, you'd be out of luck even if you did because I don't think the app would even show the marker as you drove by. I drove by several historical markers and there was no alert. I can't even see any markers on the map. What the heck is the filter for? Does it exclude, or include? And why would I be interested in universities and theatres? What about HISTORY?? Worthless app.

Speech engine terrible. Database good.. The speech engine is absolutely terrible (meaning the voice you listen to which "reads" the markers out loud). It sounds like a bad 1980's version of a talking robot. Hard to understand. I realize a good speech engine may be expensive but you can't advertise "text to speech" and have it be as lousy as this. The database interaction is great, so if you travel and want to sit and read on your phone what the local markers say, then this would be fine for that. But I was hoping this would read the markers to me as I drive past them. I guess it will, but it will be painful to listen to.

Wonderful App!. I really can’t recommend this enough. It’s been a joy to use this app to learn about all the history around the Washington DC area. The photos of the markers really makes this one above and beyond the other historical markers apps on the app store.

Version 2.1 does fix 2.0 issues!. I am updating my rating from 1 to 5 stars now that version 2.1 is out to correct the issues within 2.0, such as markers not appearing if you have low disk space on your phone. Thank you for reviewing our feedback and improving this great app!

Historical Markers. I have trouble when I touch the marker icon making it pop up. It used to work better but it’s terrible now.

So many markers!. I’ve been really enjoying this app. I’ve been able to pull it up pretty much anywhere I’ve been in NY and learn something new about the area. I really can’t recommend this enough.

Fantastic App!. I'm so happy that I found this app. It's simple and works as advertised. My wife and I use it on our road trips through the Appalachians and it's become an indespensible resource for learning about local history. I've written Dan (the author) a couple of times to report bugs and always recieved a quick response. My only suggestion would be to include the ability to upload new images of markers, but Dan tells me that feature is in the works, so fingers crossed. It's a great app and definitely 5 out of 5 stars!

App is not working properly!. Please update the app! When you click on a pin in map view, a faint outline of a box appears. It’s a toss of the dice as to whether or not the marker description will open on a new screen. This app USED to be great; please fix it! Very few markers. I just got back from a trip and passed by several markers. Got home and discovered this app. Downloaded it and tried to look up the historical markers I passed and only found two within a very large area! Markers descriptions are neat, but very few if them are listed.

Great. This ap was great traveling with. We were able to look ahead to places while traveling to see what was around.

Needs work. Great idea but a lot of them do not have any info about the historic site. They do have a link to a PDF file but the PDF file doesn't work either. Also some historic markers near where I live are not listed in this app.

Do not buy!!!. I agree with the other reviews (wish I would have read them before I purchased) this app doesn't do anything!!!...the concept is awesome the execution very very poor!!!

Historical Markers. Great app, occasionally crashes and touch sensitivity can be frustrating, but I love this app and use it whenever I travel.

Crashes when I click on a marker. I was reasonably happy with the markers I saw close to home (Remarksble Ohio had more, but this had some they didn't). But when I click on the info about the marker the program closes. Happened for all markers I tried. This is a SERIOUS BUG. Please fix!!!!!!

No descriptions. I bought this hoping I could be on the road, pass a marker and see what it said without stopping. This doesn't work that way. It only tells you where the markers are based on your current location or a location you choose.

Tip. If you're still having crashes after installing the update, shut off the iPad (with the red slider), then restart it. That worked for me. No more crashes.

Missing data. Loaded this app because we were passing markers on a trip through SE Texas. Once loaded the local roadside markers were not listed! I will seek a refund

Fabulous fun!. Wherever you are, wherever you go, this app tells you all about the historically significant sights around you. Love it!

Crash on first button press.. I have a pretty low tolerance for apps that crash before they've done anything at all. I hit the GPS arrow to center on me then the magnifying glass. Crash. iOS 6.3 on iPhone 5. Great idea, keep iterating? Implementation is not very mature so far. Can I get a refund?

Little information. Very disappointing. I have attempted to look at 14 markers so far but have established zero information on any. It was worth a try but I should have taken note of previous reviews. Do not make the same mistake as I did!!

Best history app ever!!!. One of the first apps downloaded and it is awesome! I finally get to read what's on the markers I always drive by. You need to get this for any history buff!!!

No Data Available. Only if you are interested in knowing the location of some markers should you consider this application. I started looking around my area including Dealy Plaza in downtown Dallas where Kenedy was shot. It still showed "No Data Avaliable". I typed in a general title in the search and was told none available. Don't waste your money.

App Shuts Down. Was super excited to download this app while traveling on vacation. Pulled up great sights, but when clicking the more info icon the app would kick me out and I would have to start over again, never providing me the opportunity to read the entire history.

Waste of money!!!. Worst app I have ever bought. Drove from North Texas to Colorado with none of the roadside historical markers showing up in the map. So disappointing. A few markers did come up but they were random and unimportant. One star and that is only because the map is accurate.

Awesome. I love this app and will read just to read. I enjoy jumping to different parts of the country and learning the local history.

J. I was excited to find this app but then extremely disappointed to find that it showed almost none of the many historical markers that blanket Texas.

😞After update. The app opens in the last location I used it and every time I try to move it to the area I'm in it shows in the Atlantic Ocean. Please fix this. Otherwise this app is useless.

Works as advertised. Handy informational tool. Also, at one point there was a glitch, quick email response and problem solved.

The best of the historical marker apps!. By far the best of the historical marker apps available on the app store. Being able to see photos of the markers really sets it apart. The app is a joy to use and elegant in its simplicity!

Good App. This works fine as an aid. It can help you plan your next ride to an historic site. But you have to get out of your automobile and see the markers and their landscapes to appreciate these places.

Awful. Downloaded the app three days ago. Showed marker sites the first couple times I opened it. Going on a trip today and was looking forward to using this when I was traveling but.....when I open the app not a single marker shows up, just a blank map. Like you had an unmarked Google map up. Worthless.

Don't Waste Your Money For Texas Markers. This app shows location co-ordinates & Titles ONLY for all the markers I attempted to find. No descriptions were shown for Texas Markers. You want an app that uses the THC (Texas Historical Commission) Database to show histories.

Keeps crashing. Then you have to reset everything you put in it

Historical markers. As we were traveling this weekend I noticed the historical marker signs and each one had a number listed. So I went to the app store and downloaded the historical marker app. NONE of the signs were in the app. VERY disappointed.

Version for original iPad needed. I had this App, but the update is only for IOS 6, please make a version compatible with the original iPad.

Love this app!. This was such a fun app to use during a long road trip. In addition to the Historical Markers it also gives info on many historical buildings. A wonderful source of local information.

Crashes on os10. Crashes whenever I press the go to current location button. Crashes if I try to swipe to a different location.

Does not work at all!!!!!!!. I have yet to see an historical marker on this app. I am sitiing in my house and I know of 3 markers withing one mile of me. None are listed within many miles of me. Glad I only wasted $.99.

Potential. You can see historical sites but not much more. The app has potential but is not much yet.

No longer works. Loved it at first. No shuts down when a location is opened. Sent info to support email but no change.

Worthless. Shows nothing in Vermont. No help function. Does checking on a filter add it or block it? Nothing in catalog.

Loved this app. I used and loved this app. Then I upgraded my iPad first gen to os5. Now I can't reload this app. It says I have to get os6 which seems not to be available for this iPad generation. I would love to have this app back as I travel extensively and enjoy the markers I find. Please fix this

Crashes constantly. Shows markers on map just fine but every single time I click on 'I' for Info, it crashes.

Poorly written descriptions. The app itself seems to work ok, but the site marker descriptions are terrible. They're written in broken English that can sometimes be incredibly difficult to read. I'd avoid this app. You're almost better off just searching Wikipedia.

iPad one. Sorry that it seems I can no longer update this app. I have an iPad one....prob many kids do too and use it in car travels. Other apps have figured out a way to update for all ages of iPads. Could you look into that please?

Don't waste your money. I'm currently in Concord, NH. Just browsing through the Wikipedia list, I see many Historical Markers in Concord. But in the app? Just two, both for Franklin Pierce. This app is a total waste of money.

Disappointing. An app is needed to find highway and historical markers, but don't bother with this one. The data only covers the east coast.
