ThumbJam App Description & Overview

What is thumbjam app? ThumbJam is a powerful musical performance experience. You get over 40 high-quality real instruments multi-sampled exclusively for this app. Hundreds of included scales allow you to effortlessly play in any style from rock to classical, whether you are a musical novice or a seasoned professional.

---====---
Jordan Rudess, the world-renowned keyboardist for Dream Theater says:

"ThumbJam stands at the very top of the overcrowded music app world. The sounds included absolutely rival those found in pro instruments and making music on the app is a total joy. The only problem I have with this app is that I did not make it myself! Luckily, I'm able to work with the developer and offer a few good feature ideas as well as some choice sounds from my personal collection!"
---======----

Even if you've only played air guitar, ThumbJam lets you sound like a pro. Pick an instrument and jam -- with all the scales to choose from you'll never hit a wrong note. The high quality instrument samples will make you sound like you just skipped years of music lessons.

For the performing musician, this app is awesome for soloing on an instrument you didn't bring along. Play in any key, any style -- go from a string ensemble to a wailing guitar. ThumbJam was developed and tested by musicians to feel and sound like a real instrument. You'll be surprised at how expressive it can be, make sure to check out the videos and audio at thumbjam.com.

ThumbJam makes use of tilt and shake to add vibrato, tremolo, note bends, and volume swells for more realistic and expressive results. It supports up to five (eleven on iPad) simultaneous touches and up to 32 voice polyphony, for each of up to 8 loaded instruments! Delay and stereo reverb add depth to the sound, and a resonant lowpass filter gives you more tone shaping power. Put on your headphones or plug in to your home stereo to experience some of the highest quality instruments in the App Store, even after all these years!

Build your own loops from the ground up or import your favorites and jam from there. Layer as many loops as you want, with different instruments for each. Export your loops as audio files via WiFi. Copy and paste audio from other apps using AudioCopy/Paste as well the general pasteboard, via email, AudioShare, iTunes Document Sharing, Files, or open directly in another application. Supports Audiobus and InterApp Audio for streaming sound to/from other apps in real-time, including state save/restore with Audiobus 3.

Extensive MIDI input and output support over WiFi or Bluetooth, with any CoreMidi compatible device, or other apps on the same iOS device with virtual MIDI. Now also supports Ableton Link for tight sync between apps on the same network. Supports MPE input and output (and did so before it was even a thing)!

New powerful arpeggiator feature lets you play patterns with perfect time sync, from the screen or via MIDI control.

The app includes a huge variety of scales, from western to eastern. Save your favorites for quick access, or create your own in-app. You can even import new scales in the Scala format for complete flexibility.

You can also record your own multi-sampled instruments using a built-in or attached microphone, or from file import.

Still Awesome! UPDATE 2022 UPDATE 2024. Still using it. It’s still great. Had this for a long time. Still use it regularly. Sounds great and fun to use! If you don’t have it, get it!

Best music app EVER. Even though it is not popular it is my favorite app for music. I can’t believe I have played it for over 11 years!

Best Music App. ThumbJam is still at the top when it comes to music apps for ios. The features an sound quality create an amazing creative environment. It’s not hard to spend hours playing with it.

I love this app!. I love this app. It sounds so realistic; like an actual orchestra is playing my music. I have no complaints, just one suggestion; I would like it if there was a realistic choir sample, for pieces featuring choral parts. :)

best music app, plenty of bugs 😪. Last time I used this, I was dealing with some pretty major bugs: mainly inconsistency and unreliability in recording loops, tempo syncing delay issues, and Bpm mysteriously changing after saving. Otherwise an elegant and deep musical tool. I was very eager to check back in on the app, but since upgrading my phone the interface/menus are completely broken…

Dead silent on iPhone Xr. I loved this app and would give it 5 stars, but since upgrading to iPhoneXr, it no longer makes a sound. The interface is also screwed up. No update to be found in App Store. Please fix this! Reinstalled and it works now! Thanks tech support!

Auv3. If this could some how become an Auv3 I would lose my marbles

Good. Improvement

Still the best music app on iPad. Years later and this is still my go to app on the iPad for writing music. It just works, it's fast, and it plays nice with everything else.

Instrument/Sampler de Exellence!. iOS's FIRST Professional instrument, designed for the touch screen from its very roots. Still in my top 10 after all these years, while so many others have come and gone. This is the app that set the standard by which all pro musician apps are judged.

Very powerful even as just a midi controller. IMHO, this app is the best arp midi controller super customizable.

one of my top five music apps. this is better than scaler from plugin boutique and other music theory apps. i dont even need the n.i komplete kontroller or artiphon instrument one anymore. this does everything.

Strings alone. Excellent app. Interface is amazing and allows expression. I'd buy it for the cello alone.

Just buy it. You won't be disappointed. I've had this app since the beginning and they just keep on adding and updating pro features. It's one of my go to apps and it always has a place on my main screen

Great app, responsive support. Love this app! However I did have a problem with it I couldn't solve without help. The answer was not in the user guide and I got no response when trying to register for the thumb jam forum (noticed no new posts since early 2020). I was eventually able to contact the developer, and he ultimately issued an update to solve my issue (CC1 control)!

One of the best. ThumbJam is one of the best midi controllers in the AppStore. It comes with a huge library of instruments for free. The sample quality of the instruments is outstanding. The devs haven’t sabotaged the app like most others do. Since picking up this app years ago they have release more instruments and loop packs for free. This is my second 5 star review of the app (update for current version).

I keep coming back to Thumbjam.... ...for the incredibly realistic-sounding instruments (cello is one excellent example). The app has so many features I haven't even used...I mostly use this with Audiobus input to DAWs such as Garageband. One star docked, however, due to the layout as one other reviewer mentioned. Otherwise, this is a great, classic IOS app I keep coming back to.

Latest version 2.6.3 has big background battery drain issue. Power saver was on, and background audio was on. I put my iPad into airplane mode overnight. Woke up the next morning and the battery had gone from 90 something percent to 62%, with 94% usage coming from ThumbJam. I turned off background audio, and charged my iPad. iPad was again in airplane mode overnight. This morning, battery status shows ThumbJam was active in background for 20.4 hours in the last 24.

ThumbJam is FANTASTIC. Look, I’m not going to explain why you should buy this. If you look at this track record you’ll understand what a wonderful music app this is for anyone.

Set and mix down won’t load. The set or mixdown won’t load. I’ve tried deleting it and downloading it and it’s having the same issue. Please help. Other than that little glitch it’s a great app.

Flexible, complete synth app. This is my favorite synth app. Every imaginable configuration control and option for shaping sound. I use it for recording and it produces beautiful sounds with an easy to use input pad that is superior to virtual piano keyboard or typical synth controls. I route it through my Roland cube amp for rich and beatiful compositions

One of the all time greats. Absolutely amazing sound quality for the price. Can easily compete with all of the higher cost apps of the same vein. Not to mention all the free downloadable sound packs. Desert island app for sure.

Brilliant! now with ableton link!. This one keeps going strong, love it! Thank you!

Great fun, terrible looper. As a simple way to play interesting instruments, this is a great app. As a looper, it is terrible. The greatest sin a looper can have is a delay between when you press “finish” and when the recording stops. This has somewhere between a quarter to a full-second delay that makes the looper nearly useless. It’s sad too. I had to drop my rating from 5 to 2.

ThumbJam Love. I know I’m a little late to the party but I just want to give ThumbJam some love and recommend it to anyone who hasn’t discovered it. Not only is it a great app by itself and very deep (if you want it to be) but it’s amazing sounding sampled instruments (of which there are many) can be routed to other apps - for example to Fugue Machine through Aum. Just sayin’.

Versatile. I don't think anyone mentioned it also works as a great sampler. Having a blast just chopping vocals, allows you to create custom instruments through the built in mic. Connecting to ableton was a snap! Dozens of scales to choose from, seaboard-like expression. Worth every penny. If you are into music production this is a must have app!

Static. I love this app. When making loops now the recorded instrument plays back all staticky. Could someone please help?

Audio Unit .... When?

One of the most fun apps on my phone. I am amazed at the versatility of this app. I don’t use it all the time, but occasionally if I need a specific sound played in unusual ways, this is my go to app. The only drawback I can think of would be to have a piano roll and a better way to handle loops. This makes a perfect looping app, having so many sounds, but the loop interface is very simple. That said, one can use it with all kind of looping apps as an add on. Aside from my DAW I’d say this is the best music making app on my phone.

Amazing!. Sounds are so realistic; so much functionality; deserves many more accolades. Even for non-musicians like me, this is still a must-have app!

Great great great. Firstly, this is a great app even if it doesn't progress further. I believe though there are things that could be better... Chord mode... Midi sequencer with note edit I'd gladly pay for iaa or thumbjam2...hint>.laughing out loud All in all this app is inspiring, and very creative...I love it!

This app is amazing, multifunctional, one of a kind on iOS. This app does so much. If you like to use the touchscreen as an instrument it’s perfect. You can do pitch to MIDI!! I’ve heard you can do auto scales of incoming notes as well, but I don’t like auto scales so don’t know anything about that. It can send MPE MIDI to other instruments and you can use any MPE controller to control the sounds built in or the ones you import yourself.

All better now. Forgot, my device is still, a computer. Reloaded TJ, still the heat app it’s always been

Too good. Has been updated consistently since I got it originally (on the ipad 2!), an amazing amount of flexibility, and is a plain joy to make music with

Years now... one of my favorites. This app is fantastic.. I’ve owned this since the first iPad one, and the developers keep on updating it years later. Amazing instrumentation tools, audio, etc. a truly professional app.

Wow. I haven’t had enough time with this to give it a five, but looking through Sound I found trombone, and since that is my instrument, I decided to try it, not expecting too much, since other synths that do brass range from close but no cigar to just another synth note. I was startled to hear a real bone, and gliss, vibrato, and maybe even tremolo. Can’t wait to spend more time with this. The app name ought to be changed to something like Realjam. I am really impressed, because ,I, like many iPad Pro owners, have many many synths, and some of them can’t even begin to synth brass.

Giant. The app is stellar and the developer is on the case. A must have.

Still, one of the VERY best iMusic apps!!. If you haven't yet tried ThumbJam and are thinking about it, stop thinking and buy it!

Absolutely must have.. Thumbjam is easily my go-to instrument of choice. One improvement idea: I would love to be able to sequence a chord progression or full song (similar to Navichord) and have the playing surface change accordingly so you can perform entire song live

One of the best. ...Possibly THE best musical instrument for iOS. Insane. A couple feature requests: 1) The ability to save/reload a session, which would keep your tempo, key, scale, loops and loaded instrument intact for live performance. 2) Ableton Link!!!! Thank you so much for this app. It's been bringing me joy and helping me make music for years now.

App keeps muting instrument if you switch apps or open help. Unusable currently, especially if you compose in more than one app. Not worth the money.

Fantastic app. There is nothing like it, and seriously, it's the best thing since sliced bread.

Truly a must have. This app has a special quality to it that can't be described - it has to be experienced first hand. Easy to dive into, but loaded with many deep (and incredibly useful) features. The UI is well designed and a pleasure to use. Sound quality is, of course, excellent. The MIDI features included with TJ are also stellar. Can't recommend this app enough. To the developer - fabulous job. 👍

Still the best. ThumbJam is still the best single IOS music investment you can make. Buy this first.

Brilliant. I live this app. It’s become an essential tool for writing on the go and trying new ideas. Well worth every penny.

Great app & Support. The new update to add Audiobus 3 MIDI support includes the ability to use ThumbJam as a scale filter so it will take input MIDI notes and use the closest note in your scale in ThumJam to output a note. Since ThumbJam supports importing scala files you can have all sorts of microtonal scales in addition to the wide range of scales already available in the app. The developer is one of the best at continuing to update and support his apps. Thumbjam is even more useful now that it can be played in landscape orientation on the iPad. A rock solid app you can't go wrong with. It's a great midi controller too.

Love it. As a drummer, I don’t play other instruments. ThumbJam allows me to lay down a drum track then add ThumbJam tracks on top, creating unending possibilities for a lone musician with no real melodic skills. The variety if instruments and controls allow the creation of bazillions of unique tones, while playing them on my phone actually allows me to give them all a real instrument feel. I really can’t say enough good things about this app! Buy it. Donate! These developer folk deserve it.

Best all around. If you want a multi instrumented just for fun, or to create your own sounds, songs, layers and loops. This is just fun, easy to use, and its great for a beginner to a professional. I have had and used this app for years now and I love it.

Great app. I can feel like Jimi Hendrix from the comfort of my couch.

Thumb jam!. This is probably my favorite app in the world. It is a must have that only keeps getting better!

Wow. Best sound/music app ever. Very flexible, customisable, and fun. Some minor bugs with loops and some interface tweaks required but a solid app overall. Thank you!

This is simply very cool.. I love it. I often use it on my phone whilst walking the dogs. The sounds are great - check out the steel guitar - and by setting up the thumb pad keyboards correctly you can improvise in any key with harmonies. It also sounds great when recorded into a larger track.

Where are the ‘black notes’?. Enjoying the app and looking forward to using it in a band setting, but I just can’t figure out why there’s no option for the grid to be laid out like a piano keyboard with ‘white’ notes and ‘black’ notes, especially when using a chromatic scale. The shaded tonic, dominant and subdominant (do you know how long it took me to figure out why they were shaded?!?) make sense for some situations, but when I need to quickly move between A3 and A4, the easiest way for me to recognise the notes is always going to be on a piano keyboard (hint: the shaded ‘black’ keys could still run the full length of the grid, they don’t need to be shorter). Yes, I could connect to a midi keyboard, but I actually need the x-axis controls offered on the iPad screen for volume and velocity. I’m also struggling with shifting between octaves or adjusting the span when I have the screen split to multiple instruments - I can only move one instrument at a time, but I need them both to move. I can’t seem to link/lock them so they move together. To add to my frustration, the only way I seem to be able to ~select~ the other instrument to be able to adjust it’s span and octave seems to be to tap a note in that instrument, which PLAYS A SOUND. If I’m trying to adjust, you can bet your boots I don’t want to be making sound. So yeah, great app, but could use just a couple more tweaks to make it really useful and user friendly.

Cool app. Just one thing I'm Greek and the Bouzouki does not sound like that it sounds a bit dull should be more of a high pitch sound Where Is The Bouzouki I Bought This For That Reason.

A must have app for beginners to professional musicians. WOW !! What a powerful app. Effective, user friendly, and realistic instrument sounds & bends / pitches. I'm a musician for the past 18 years, from live gigs to recording studio work, and this app has just made my work so much easier. I will defiantly use this on stage live. I've tried many apps, but Thumb Jam takes #1 on the list. Good work Thumb Jam team !!

Astonishingly bad. Where to even start? You cannot edit loops, you cannot quantise , the buttons are minuscule, you cannot pause individual loops, there are no chord pads, control surfaces are resized when you exit/re-enter the app, the metronome may also change, you cannot set global prefs for all instruments, .... this is but a brief summary of the myriad flaws. On the plus side it makes a half-decent controller. Now all I need is a looping app.

Excellent. Audiobus support just made this even better

Excellent app. This is a great app for non-keyboard players. I use this for both live playing and recording. One of the beauties is that hitting a wrong note is often not noticed as it is still in the right key. It also makes improvising very easy. Makes me sound a lot more professional than I am.

Excellent App!. I'm an Electric Guitar geek and this app is excellent. The background beats are excellent and I use this a lot. Well done! I highly recommend for those guys into guitars and solo practice. I use this a lot. The record feature is a hoot as well. Excellent stuff!!

Amazing. Must have music making app- deep and powerful but also immediately satisfying

5 star app!. I have a lot of music apps and Thumbjam stands head and shoulders above them all. I am a musician and find this an excellent composition aid and source for inspiration / experimenting with sound. Very intuitive and sounds great. 5 Stars!

Worth every penny.... I've seen a couple of small quirks, but nothing that could stop this amazing app from deserving the full five stars. If you like music, buy it. It really is something special.

Amazing Sounds & Incredible Features!. This machine really has everything covered. From the highest quality sounds to amazing expression, and even a loop recorder. But then you also get very comprehensive midi capabilities and full recording functionality. Also the importing and exporting options are very complete, which just makes everything possible. The effects are powerful and the expressive capabilities really do make this a real instrument that is amazing to play. There is also a great range of scales for choosing your own specific tonal flavor. This really is a comprehensive machine, just look at the features above and you'll realize this is really a necessity for music creation.

Excellent. Just one of the most amazing way to play haunting music , a wonderful way to learn you talents.

Landscape!. I love the diversity and quality of patches, but boy, you gotta do a landscape mode!

Incredible!. I’ve been using this app and loving it for a few years now and thought I’d best thank the developers with a review! Thanks for continuing to provide updates!! I often use Thumbjam sounds through a midi sequencer app - the sample quality in Thumbjam is extraordinary and there is such a great variety of traditional instruments to use. But where Thumbjam truly shines is when it is played as an instrument. The expression that can be achieved through tilting the iPad etc. is astounding. This app is a must have!

Must Buy, especially for composing with multiple apps. The best thing I have found about this app, apart from the great quality sampled instruments, is the background audio feature. Thumbjam is the only app I have which consistently plays background audio. This is huge for composing in multiple apps. For example, if you create a pattern in korg ims20 and want to be able to hear that pattern whilst composing another layer for the track in sunrizer synth, you simply copy the pattern from korg and paste into thumbjam, minimize thumbjam and it will keep playing when you go to sunrizer. This works with many different apps. A tip, if you do this make sure you start all the apps first and then switch between them with multitasking.

Very nice but... Dont know if its just me but since last update cant do nothing now i mean if i click on change instruments option, it appear a little option bar with option keep scale key on or off and from there all is freeze cant toutch anywhere else it keep freezed from there all the time even if i restart app and no i do not have the last ios uptade 13 and dont know if that is the problem. Let me know plz and very goood app👌🏻

My favourite app. Hard to fault this. Great sound library, extensive MIDI implementation, tons of scales & on & on. Cheap at twice the price. Every time I demo it it is very well received.

Fantastic, highly recommended. I can't say enough about this app. The samples sound great, interface is deep but simple. But most of all it is very satisfying to play, like a good musical instrument. I can't put it down. I will be using ThumbJam in performance this weekend and I can't wait.

Best music app in the app store. This app alone is worth buying an iPad for

Excellent. Just got this and already enjoying.. Would love to see a Sitar instrument made.. Also, add quantizing and you've done it..

Awesomeness. This program is awesome… Get it now

Freakin' Sweet!. Simple, fun and powerful. This is a freakin' sweet app! You'll be making cool music in minutes.

um. where is the sound. please hurry and update

New Version. Thumbjam is back in fine form, freshly updated. Great developers listen! Thanks guys! Now the app store's most robust music generator is ready for you! What are you waiting for?

Amazing. For the dollars spent you get a superb musical instrument and sequencer. Remarkable fidelity in reproduction of the sounds of each instrument. Could do with more choices in loops and more exotic instruments e.g. Indian, Japanese, etc. for a small fee. Well done!

One of my fav music apps.... I love this application. The sounds quality is excellent, and the interface is unique.

I love this app!. But, please!!! Make it an AUV3

So much fun. Really impressive work. Great sounding samples and the now with audio copy and paste beatmaker and looptastic producer just got a new friend. Highly reccomended.

There's always a but.. I'll get the negative out of the way first. Layout! Garage Band has two screens, one consists of a track view that shows you all the instruments/ vocals / mix downs that are in your current track. It's displayed quit nicely actually and is easy to navigate around and tweak. The second screen it provides is one that comes up when you are in an instrument mode for any of the tracks from the first screen. Here is where you can play and record your instrument of choice. With Thumb Jam however, it's just sloppily pasted over your screen where your instruments notes are shown. It's quite messy and just gets in the way IMO . If there is a way to not have this show I have not come across it yet,nor should I have to search for it. That aside , the lavish assortment of instruments and the quality sound these instruments provides is fantastic. And the ability to create your own instrument is fantastic! Not even the mighty Garage Band can compare to the variety and quality of these samples! So do yourself a favor and pick this one up. I have both because I find they differ enough to warrant having two capable music apps at my disposal, but Thumb Jam takes the cake for instrumental variety!

No Sound!!!. It was working great for me, but now it doesn't make any sounds at all in the app. The update really kills the app, hope they update soon so I can get back to making music. I only wish I saw the warning they had on the info page of the app...

how do you work this stupid app. title says it all

Best all around ios music app. It samples. It tracks your voice. It's a great midi controller. Sounds great . It's perfect.

Awesome. Love it!! So many instruments! Can't wait to create! Thank you :)

Good stuff!!!. This is a great little app. The samples are amazing quality and very realistic. Would love to see a sequencer/drum machine incorporated into this... Much potential. Would also be nice to have a master BPS to match your recorded loops together as it stands you need to be dead on with timing on layering multiple loops.

Instant favorite!. Picked it up on sale and it instantly became my new favorite music app, both as a super playable synth and a midi controller. You can tell immediately how much love and care the developer has put into the app. Amazing feature set.

Yup, OS4 no go. I agree, great app but crashes with the current OS4 update even after Thumbjam version 1.2 update. Will re rate when functional.

Amazing. This may just be the best app i've purchased, hands down. I'm using it to control instruments in my DAW. the voice recognition is just amazing.

One of the best apps on the store. Beautifully polished, includes ALL chords possible, and very precise. I am amazed; would've paid 30 dollars for this app. Powerful interface and extremely easy to use. Amazed.

Extensive, intuitive, and flexible. I was will surprised how I could make some pretty decent music with this app. Overlaying, importing, downloading and creating new instruments, and a lot more. The only reason I do not give this app 5 stars is because it is difficult to be precise on the keys using an iPhone. If its available on the iPad, then it gets 5 stars on that platform.

Amazing. Seriously, it is!. The instrument sounds are the best I've heard from an iPad app. The interface isn't overwhelming if you aren't interested in all the fancy stuff (yet). Just pick it up and doodle away. If you ARE into recording, MIDI controlling, creating your own instruments and on and on, well, that's all there, too. Highly recommended! You'll be amazed at what it can do.

WOW!!!!. I just discovered this after watching the soundtestroom, and I’ve playing with for one hour. It is simply AMAZING! Just get it. I’m sure you’ll love it :)

Awesome. Really great app I like that I can jam with my own music and add extra notes to guitar solos and not cymbals to drumming "I have dreamed of for years to do"but the only problem is when I record a drum beat it come out fine but then when I play power chords it so off time please can you fix that some how

So far so great!. I downloaded this yesterday, and so far this app is awesome. There are quite a few free loops and additional instruments to download. Sound is quite good for most instruments (although there are a few that sound digital) and it really is easy to setup a loop and jam. I have convinced one of my buddies to get this, but we have not yet tried the bluetooth jam. Well worth the price of admission. If you're unsure, check out their site. There are some great demo vids under media!

Awesome. Nice update! High 5! All thumbs!

Five in one - great value. It is like sample tank, loopy, midi guitar, and something else to create samples - all in one app. Also you can play it as an instrument. Unlike many other wanna be apps, all features here are usable. It is difficult to create drum loops as there is no quantizing, also slight delay in pitch to midi conversion - if this is fixed I will forget all my other apps.

Best program around 10 bucks for music.. Can sample, can do iaa and midi. Realistic sounds to make real music. Worth every penny. Needs external / off server instrument sharing area or web interface for adding instruments where users can upload/download shared sampled instruments to really grow.

Amazing. Thumbjam is easily my favorite app on my iPhone. It's complex, detailed, and has a ton of depth to it. It might not be for those who only play air guitar but if you know basic music terminology you should have no problem with the app. The recordings are clear and everything on it was done very well. Recording music using the instruments is hard though since creating chords on the instruments takes some work due to the small touch screen on my phone so I can see why most recommend it for the iPad instead. But other than that I love it :D

Older version. Would it be possible to have a downloadable older version. I have updated to current version but now won't open and quits instantly. It could be because I haven't updated my IPod 4g (4.3.5) to the latest; but I am currently unable to. Thanks. Thumbjam is a great app if you love to create music, loops, beats etc.

I love it. The instruments sound absolutely amazing, the interface is clear and intuitive, the potential for customization near limitless. If you love playing with music on your iDevice, you would live this gem!

Truly the best. What I'm about to tell you is as accurate and truthful as I can be. I have the top 1000 music apps and close to 3000 apps overall. This app is without a doubt the best app I have and have ever used. The sound quality and overall genius is outstanding. Great job people. I've used this app for years and will continue. To long of a review to tell you everything. But just buy the app you won't be disappointed. Regards ACR.

Love it. One of my favorite 'instrument' apps. Love the sounds and ease of use. For the developers. I just upgraded to ios 6.01 and saw that the app was taking up 4.4GB. Nothing on google. Assuming something went wrong when it restored the app from my backup. Deleted and re-downloading. I assume this will fix the problem, and thus my 5 star review.

Beautiful sounds, but.... Whenever I lay a new track down, it's WAY out of sync with the others! Is there any way to set all tracks back to 'zero' for overdub/replay? I can't seem to find a counter reset anywhere. The functionality is very impressive otherwise. Just needs this sync issue fixed and it'll be golden!

Amazing app!. Just like the description says good for any musical talent or not. I've spent hours making loops and goofing around with this app. Definitely worth the money.

Yes. This is what I've been looking forward to in a music producing app.it's alot cheaper than xewton music studio and beat maker,it has alot more samples(30 odd)and it's not hard to understand.it's perfect.

No sound. Was a great app need fix now

Not bad. Kinda kool. There's no landscape mode. WT£ Rookies.

Best App. The Steel guitar preset is wonderful. The sinc. To GB is super!

Amazing app, seriously well done!. Thanks for the level of support! Version 2 brings many cool new features! This is not just a little toy app. It's a tool that can really be used seriously to make good music. The number and quality of instruments is very good, but the most amazing in this app is the very versatile interface. Makes it great for recording, but also for live performance. It's one of the rare music tools, with Beatmaker2, iShred, maybe Xenon, that are of A1 quality.

Outstanding!. This is a gift that just keeps on giving. So many great high quality instrument sounds can be made with Thumbjam by itself or combined with other apps in Audiobus. Also many Midi options sre available as well. Buy it!

I guess it's good.. It's kind of complicated if you're not and expert or a pro musician buy it if you are used to stuff like this.

No quantize?!. I love this thing and I have pretty good rhythm but it would be nice to tighten stuff up even more with the ability to quantize each loop. Pleeeeeeeease add this in an update

WOw. If your a music lover like me. Like to make your own music this is a must have app youimpressive

Fun. Best app ever! Love creating my own songs but is there a way to share?

Great app but. Please full chord guitar acoustic and electric thanks

Fun music app !!!. This is a great music making quality app!!! One of my top ten!!!!

Why not #1??. How is this app not even top 10? As a pro musician this is hands down the most intuitive app I've ever used. So many features I'm still finding new stuff to play with. I use it mostly to improvise with other tunes I've written with the scales that correspond with the chord changes, but since finding the sampler feature, I can get drunk and make my own instruments now! Just sing a note or grab your cat (or any other useful item that makes noise), and you've got yourself a virtual sampler! So much fun!! Now I'm off to go eat a whole crap load of beans and soon I will be making beautiful tunes with my gastrointestinal tract :)

Un-real Application. I have been recording and playing music and collecting musical instruments over 25 years. Never in this time have I run across one single application, software, or instrument that translates ideas into musical reality this well. I read the reviews and thought there was a lot of hype going on there. Then… I bought the application. The ability to add feeling to the individual instruments by tilting and shaking the iphone completely blew me away. I love all of the bowed string instruments. The sound is so much more natural than most MIDI or synth string set I have used before. I recorded a few of the loops in my home studio and mixed them with a few live guitars. Un-real is all I can say- I had to laugh when I saw how well the sound of my iphone held up to the sound of a couple real instruments. One of the things I found really nice was the ability to produce any type of music. Blues, Jazz, county, rock. I have downloaded numerous music programs for my itouch and iphone and they all seem to assume that I want to create disco tech “dance beat”. This app will have you have you creating sexy, beautiful and original music. No compromise- just think it then play it. Oh, and if you want you can still make that disc-tech stuff with it 

an entire instrumental world in your pocket. I have had ThumbJam for a few years, since my iPhone 4, and it is still one of my favorite apps and a rare gem that I have bought for several other people because I am so enamored with it. Not too many but there are a few instruments that play like the real one might. And I can’t say this is something you could play in a band. But if you like to explore instruments, especially if you have kids, then this is one of the best out there for just the sheer number of instruments available and the quick and easy way of switching from one to another. If you have kids I highly recommend this, and if your don’t it’s fun to play with.

one last bug to fix. Thumbjam is definitely one of the greatest apps in the store. they were finally able to fix the problems from the last update on the ipod touch, however, there is one small problem that remains. if you're playing with it and then the ipod goes to sleep you have to restart the app because it goes silent. other than this little bug, thumbjam works perfectly. there is so much you can do with this app it's amazing. you can write and record a musical motif for an entire orchestra in about 30 minutes with this thing(that's what i did anyway). it's a great musical tool for writing on the go and it's also great for performing. the guys at sonosaurus are truely amazing. thanks for the app and thanks for the update!

Impressively Simple Yet Deep. ThumbJam is a major leap forward in electronic music with a unique and intuitive playing interface, excellent samples, and the ability to tweak sample sounds like an expensive keyboard. An incredible amount of time obviously went into it's development, and the cost is unbelievably low compared to soft synths I've spent hundreds on with much less capability. Besides being fun to play, ThumbJam is a great tool for music students and serious musicians who want to learn scales, keys and chords, all of which are built-in including dozens from around the world. As a composer, the loop recorder is a great way to get ideas down on the fly before transcribing songs at a later date. I'm really impressed.

So good, so much fun. This is a must buy.

Bleikr Sound Approved App. App was recommended to Bleikr Sound by guitar legend Robert Fripp.

No need for me to fully review this!. The title of this review says it all! If you don't believe me go to Sonosaurus You Tube page and watch the tutorials, I was sold after the third of the 6 videos. This app will play a huge part in my Reason 6 setup whether it's in line audio, midi control, or exporting WAV files. The in app features are great as well as the UI is on point, except I don't like I can't change the tempo on a already recorded loop. If you want to change the loop tempo, you have to start all over. If you could fix this it would be appreciated, if not not big deal. Otherwise, Great job Sonosaurus, and can't believe this a two year old app with frequent updates!

Revolutionary!. Folks this app is a game changer when it comes to the IPad and music production! The sounds are fantastic, creating new interesting sounds is easy, and making music is even easier. I am so looking forward to future development of this app. I have been programming and recording keyboards for 30 years and I have never been able to get strings and cellos this expressive, and it was done in seconds not hours. "Thumbjam" is so good that I was able to delete half of the music apps I had on my IPad. If you have Logic or Garageband this program is for you! This truly is a application that justifies the cost of an IPad. If I ever need to free up space on my device this application will be the last one standing!

Buy this app... Please.. Guitar players... Trigger thumbjam with your guitar. You're going to need a cheap $20 adaptor to connect to the line input of your device and a guitar pedal that will allow you to lower the input volume (too hot a signal will cut or distort the output). Thumbjam triggers faster than my Roland GI-20! It won't be polyphonic, but it is amazing and has great accuracy. Plus you can use thumbjam to then trigger other ios synths like sunrizer(with your guitar!). This app is a must buy! Great sound quality, pro features and a guitar synth without spending a fortune. Do it!!

ThumbJam 2.0 Still the Best! A Real Instrument.. I just purchased another musical app (I have more than 30--both "instruments" and synthesizers), and ThumbJam is still the best. I have no connection with the developers or anybody with ThumbJam, but I have a really picky ear, and I appreciate the very high-quality (read "real") samples Sonosaurus uses for this app. It allows experimentation in many chord progressions (from ancient Greek to minor blues to Indonesian), and all of them sound like real musical instruments, unless YOU choose to play a synth, then you get to play a good one. Except for a few "Space Music" synthesizers, all of the other apps I've bought have distortion in the output that I don't want most of the time. I have even discovered that doodling with a viola (I don't play any bowed instruments) is really pretty, and meditative. The tenor and alto saxes are really nice. GOOD JOB!

Be Amazed. I never review apps from the app store. If I remember correctly, this is probably the first actually. This is an excellent product. Quality sounds combined with an easy to use GUI, in my opinion, makes it probably the best music creation app inside the app store, for any Apple mobile device. I have been playing and writing music for about 9 years and have been recording for about 7. I have just found a product that will enhance whatever I decide to lay down on a track. I have already experimented while jamming with it and cannot wait to see what this app has in store for me when I actually record with it. Great product.

This is the most fantastic app I have ever seen by FAR!. I LOVE this app! I showed it to the guy at the Starbucks drivethrough this morning. He loved it. He was amazed and said, "I've got to get an iPhone. (Admittedly I had it set to Pipe Organ and it was Bluetoothed to my car stereo which has a subwoofer in the trunk... But so what. That just honors the beauty and the power of this app.) I'm going to show it to my voice teacher who is a Juilliard graduate. He is going to freak. It not only produces extraordinarly beautiful music, but it contains music theory I don't understand but I know will blow his mind. I love it and I am grateful to have it. I have never been able to make such beautiful music.

Hands down, the best music app around. I've bought a lot of pricey music apps, $9.99+ and I love quite a few of them. This app though... I can't say enough good things about it. It's one of the best music apps I've ever used, on a Mac, PC or mobile device. It's so intuitive and easy to use. The fact that you can record audio directly into it was terrific. I recorded Itsy Bitsy Spider and had my kids sing along with it - and it's so much more powerful than that. Buy this app, and kudos to the developers.

Update Makes This *THE* Killer App. I have always really enjoyed this app but had some frustration with buttons and some recording problems. Since the update these have been sesolved. Thumbjam is insanely fun but, way more than that, it is an incredibly useful tool for songwriting. The ability to try out multi-instrumental and varied mix ideas in a matter of seconds and minutes is fantastic. I use this app constantly. In fact, as I live in L.A., I am in bumper-bumper traffic many times a week and I often load songs into the app, set it on my knee, and keep time to the music with the 'drums' fuction with one hand while I drive. It's amazing how much you can do with one thumb and a couple fingers while not looking at it. To developers: You guys have been great. Quick and helpful responses to issues. Keep it up. I love the 'power chords'. This review updates my previous 4 star to 5 stars for this app.

AuV3 support pls 🙏😿. 💚much luv but AuV3 support would top the cake hard

The best there is.. If you combine this with GarageBand you have got yourself a song factory. What really amazed me about it was the function which allows you to create your own instruments. I picked up a Blue Mikey microphone from the Apple Store and now I am sampling things from everyday life to incredible effect. Get this app now before the price goes up. Once word spreads of it's incredible quality, the developers would be crazy to not jack up the price. It's easily worth a hundred bucks. Even to a poor musician like me. Thanks for the great app!

Wow!. This is what I call an update! Actually, it's almost unfair that the developers don't feel free to charge more for the work they've done. It's fantastic for beginners, I think--some comparable apps in terms of features can be confusing to nonmusicians because they assume a certain amount of knowledge about music and synthesizers--but there's a lot here for experienced musicians as well. TJ was one of the first music apps I bought (for my iPhone 3 decades ago!), and I thought maybe they dropped out of the competition in the last year or so, but they were busily redesigning and adding features to make TJ one of the best music apps in the store.

Best iPhone music app. I got this app quite a while ago, just for fun, in between then and now I've tours with countless other apps but have never deleted this one. I played a show last Sunday, a small affair where we met up with whatever we had at hand and this was all I used for that. It was easy to amp into the system and I didn't even have to mess with scales or settings at all, it let me dive straight into the performance. I recommend this app for any music nut who wants to carry around an intuitive instrument and tool wherever he goes.

Best in class. This app is awesome. I knew it was good when within 5 minutes I was making great sounding music. The interface is intuitive and responsive. I really like the added benefits of effects with tilt and shake. The instruments provided are so clean. By far the best music app I have, and I have tried a lot. I will say be prepared cuz time zips by when you are playing this thing, I had my good earphones on and before I knew it 3 hours had gone by. Worth every penny. Well done to the thumbjam developers!

Musician. Holy motherphucker of God! It's just getting too good now. It's over, actually : ( I really hope people continue to learn real acoustic instruments, because this app just makes it way too easy. It had me "playing" intricate flute solos over my friends (real acoustic guitar) in seconds. And it didn't sound cheesy, it sounded convincing. You can record and make your own instruments. Lot's of expression. Hats off to the developer(s). I'd like to add that I once wasted $20 on app called beat maker and regretted it. Not this time! I've only scratched the surface on this app, can't wait to see where it goes...

Great app and good customer service. I downloaded this app when it went on sale for .99 just recently. And I am kind of sad I have been missing out on this for so long. Haha. I did end up buying it for a friend at the 8.99 price because it was worth it. I had also had some questions about setting up the scales and presets to work with the new Auug case/holder and they were quick to help me out. Got all my questions answered in a timely manner by email (being in business I expect 2 days or less response time). Looking forward to playing around with this app more. The only bad thing I have run into so far is that the Bluetooth transmission is a little slow for using the app over a Bluetooth speaker or receiver. Only tested it on a mpow Bluetooth 4.0 receiver, so it could have been the receivers issue.

Really good. Excellent sound and workflow, easy to make loops. Needs a metronome option, and the ability to manipulate loops with better filters and effects (i.e. Analog style echo, reverse, LFOs, notch filters). Sampling is pretty easy, but highly unpredictable. Gate record function needs to remain at desired setting instead of resetting to auto record every time. Needs the ability to record with one button. I would like an option to set the record time to a fixed duration if desired. The record button function is bad. Doesn't work every time. Otherwise, very useful app if you need creative fuel or a backdrop for your live musings...

Buy it. If I could have tried this out, I would have bought this long ago. The expressive capabilities coupled with the acoustic instrument samples make this one of your best bets for faking strings or trombone. There are other good sounding instruments, but these really take advantage of what TJ can do. The one thing it is missing(or I haven't found) is a programmable synth engine. Then this would blow Moog's Animoog away. They have a similar idea for playing, but TJ is able to use more of the screen, making playing much easier. It does a good job recognizing you wiggling your finger. It also is able to recognize shaking and tilting.

IMPORTANT READ BEFORE YOU BUY THIS APP. I know personally that polarpaul and crabjuice (two reviewers who have this app 5 stars) work for sonosaurus (the company that made this app) and I suspect many of the other good reviews are planted as well. That being said, i speak as someone who has actually paid money for this app and want you to know that it is falsely advertised. There are several instruments and many of them sound good, but if you come on expecting to actually record loops or make any beats or do anything beyond just playing the same scales on a collection of instruments, look elsewhere. The recording and loop creation works well while making the song, but after you save it and come back, the app plays each looped instrument from the beginning instead of where you started recording it, effectively ruining your song.

Does not work with external Doremidi. Yay, I spent nine dollars for nothing.

Fulltilt. I've had this app from the earliest and it's still the one I believe will have a huge following once the word gets spread more. Even without a metronome or with the usual minor bugs you would expect to see for a first version it's still hands down way out in front. Intuitive as hell! This dev knows what he's doing. The best thing is that it can be used by both experienced trained musicians and anyone that wants to create beautiful music. Update review---got the new update tonight. So NIIIIIIICE!!!!!

Fun from the start. Impressive sounds, great features, and easy to use interface. Having tried a couple keyboard apps and being disappointed at the small space for actually playing the instrument, I think ThumbJam has developed a unique solution. By choosing the scale you want to play in, you can quickly lay down grooves, harmonies, riffs, and solos. The electric guitar is so much fun to play - even my non-musically inclined friends have immediately connected with their inner-Jimi Hendrix! Things I'd like to see - a metronome or some type of quantization. It does take a few go rounds still to create my own rhythm track that doesn't drop or add a bit of time. But bottom line is that this app has a lot of music theory, useful sounds, easy interface packed into a very fun experience right from the start.

x5x5*****groundbreaking. I'm not one of those 110% people - there's nothing better then 100%, leave it at that. But after some skepticism at the raving reviews and the ambiguous UI screenshots - well, 1st I'll say I'm a lifelong music enthusiast/hobby musician & wanted to get back into it. Got isequence which is great - & I was lucky bc I thot I had enough gift card credit to get xewton m studio, but isequence is more user friendly and plenty.... ANYWAY, I digress... after tinkering w above a week I wanted to see what else was out there and THANK GOD this popped up in 'genius' featured section. It's amazing. Simply incredible. You can play the cello w real feeling - practically channeling a random concert you heard years ago. And the same goes for guitar solos, anything. Someone mentioned the slide and that's unbelievable bc it really 'slides'. The only thing I have yet to figure out is how to make notes/keys larger when recording and I haven't managed to use mixer yet. But I just got the thing and hour ago! If u aren't blown away... PUT ON YOUR HEADPHONES And for those wondering, I'm a 'post rock' type 'indie rock type' and enjoy electronic and classical too. I always wonder if people raving abt an app are classical composers or techno dudes exclusively, and that doesn't help when u want to know what would suit your own tastes.

Seriously powerful yet intuitive app. I am shocked to see so many negatives! I guess some folks lost their audio and want to sling mud to feel better. Truth is the developers will fix these issues, so simmer down people. This app allows expressive performance that is actually realistic, using the accellerometer on it's X and Y axis to control dynamics, panning, pitch, etc. Now with midi controller capability! A whole new type of performance instrument. Also included is a simple interface for making one's own sample instrument. I am not easily impressed. This is BIG. The only way you could be disappointed is if you have the sound issues other have, but once resolved, we will all rejoice in the accomplishment of this app!

THE BEST GETS BETTER. I have been playing music with ThumbJam since it was first released. Each update has made this app, which was first-rate to begin with, better and better. With this latest update, I was able to jam with four instruments (Blues Organ, Tenor Sax, Acoustic Guitar and Trombone) side by side in Minor Blues scale. What an incredible sound! And I can't play any of those instruments. If you enjoy jamming along with recorded music, or just creating your own, this is the app to get. As I have stated previously, I do not understand why this app is not the number one rated music app.

Omg. The absolute best music out there... This one stays in my tray... And it's the first of the two hundred+ music apps I have that I show others. And this is one of the most underrated apps by music app reviewers....sure animoog is awesome, as well as the rudess apps, and countless others.... But there is no app as fun to play, as creative....it can be simple or as complex as you like.... Simply brilliant...... And it's so worth the price, just to show the stuffiest, Arrogant musicologist you know two hundred and fifty music scales they never new existed. Also there is a great thumbjam community out there with great support from the developer.... Bravo thumbjam.

Almost Perfect!. This is a solid winner! While I'd like to see the addition of a standard keyboard layout option (and the ability to achieve a wireless sound output, via bluetooth) the sounds generated by Thumbjam are remarkably realistic, uniquely inventive, and truely expressive. The app has been well thought out and quite cleverly implemented. On my wish list... I look forward (with great anticipation) to a future upgrade that will allow for the option of using a standard keyboard layout, within the app, itself. Notwithstanding, this is a truely remarkable piece of software, and one that will bring out the very best in your musical creativity. BRAVO and KUDOS to Thumbjam!!!

Unexpected excellent app. I was pleasantly surprised. This instantly became my fav iPad app. Many of the sounds are quite realistic. The scales can make anyone play in key and sound good. I can imagine street 'iPad Bands' cropping up... a possibility and an odd enjoyment that'd be. A bit small for an iPhone but still be fun to play with and certainly something to show off your A4 processors coolness. (but definitely use a stereo or a pair of powered speakers the app takes advantage of stereo considerably) You won't be disappointed with this app unless you are expecting it replace your daw. At least for now. Seven bucks well spent.

Fantastic, only recommendation.... This app is a blast to play around with. My only suggestion would be to have a more precise timeline. It's fun for jamming but the record functionality is not the best. It really needs some DAW type functionality like where you can record something on the fly but then go back and edit each note on a timeline. No matter how many times I record a loop, I'm not satisfied with it. You could create some epic songs in this app if you could just fine tune things. It's more of a toy right now for me but it would be an indispensable tool if I just had more control.

yay. yay

Best ever music app NEEDS AUV3 for Logic Pro asaP pLease!. Best ever music app NEEDS AUV3 update for Logic Pro asap pLeaSe !!! 😊🙏

Best music app I've bought for the iPad. Just bought this a few days ago. The app is really great. Very impressed. It is absolutely not perfect. Frankly, the interface is a bit clunky. Some stuff is buried, some stuff you might not want can clutter things up, get in the way. I don't think it is anywhere near as great as it could be, *especially* in regards to setting it up for live performances. Sounds are limited and yes, you can record your own, but that doesn't replace a well curated library of a few hundred sounds. Even with these shortcomings, it's worth a 5 star for sheer brilliance, fun and usability. If I could only have a single "music" app for my iPad, this would be it.

Almost There. First off, I really enjoy the app, it's great .. Here's what I think needs to be added/improved: - Quantize capability .. it's hard for me to get a real 'locked in' drum track - Swing function .. if quantize capability is added, gotta be able to loosen it up a little - Sequence function .. would be great to create a song by tying a few loops together - Ability to export to wave file - Undo function! or at minimum an "are you sure you want to delete this?" dialogue throughout - Make the tempo adjust button bigger .. my finger covers it and I can't see what i'm doing (I also have trouble getting tempo adjust to work, there seems to be some limit to when it can be used). If there's a loop i've done or imported at 100bpm i'd like to be able to change it. If it's possible already I can't make it work. Oh yeah, great support .. I sent in a email question and it was answered within a couple hours. Thanks for making this app!

Amazing!. I cannot believe the depth and functionality of this app. Thumbjam has a huge range of instruments, an enormous variety of scales/modes, and even has the ability to create your own instruments. I was making beautiful music within seconds! You can record and loop your music and even control other music apps with its intuitive, clean interface. You can share your music via social networks and/email. Most importantly, this app puts the ability to create music in just about anyone's hands. Thumbjam provides a huge range of scales/modes to choose from so that it's actually difficult to play a wrong note. However let me be clear. This is extremely useful for seasoned professionals as well. It works extremely well as a "muse" because it is so easy to generate hooks/riffs. Exploring the HUGE repository of scales/modes can give you that little kick you need to think outside of your norms and break new ground. For the price, this is hands down the best music app on the iOS platform. If you love to play music and want to explore new ideas, buy this app. If you love music and wish you could create your own music but never played an instrument in your life, buy this app. If you have no interest in music at all, buy this app. You might just surprise yourself. Thanks for an outstanding piece of software!

The Universe has opened up!. I cannot possibly thank you guys enough! By far the single greatest app for all who love to be creative and lost in music. Right away with the play along w/ iPod function I accompanied Ali Akbar Khan in Raga Bagesri on the violin in the key of C#. Then I jammed with Miles Davis' Kind of Blue modally. Finally I downloaded the Tanpura and made my own Alap (raga). I LOVE everything about this app- amazing control with the layout and customization (span, octave, interval glide/step on side as key controls). Having full control of span and octave along wi Truly genius in design. REQUESTS: tunable tabla (Eastern Hop tabla won't change pitch) and Indian instruments- sitar, sarangi (WOW) and Sarode. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!

Best app for a music lover/ creator -- hands Dow. This app is fantastic .. If you like to toy around with creating your own loops, melodies, songs, etc etc you need to buy this! The potential to create in all genres is endless..and fun... Highly recommend this app.. Can't wait for some new updates tho!!! Would love to see a few more drum/bass loops.. (although there are great ones now) and some more instruments.. Like a harp..12 string guitar.. And piano/organ chords.. Like you have with the electric guitar.. Synth's.. And more track loops....cmon guys.. Bring it on!!!! AWESOME.. AWESOME APPLICATION

Very expressive. A real standout amongst instrument apps.. I don't write many reviews, but I strongly feel that this is one of the best music apps available. The actual playability factor is truly high... and the stock library of sounds are wonderful. Accelerometer control over expression is executed just about perfectly. I work in a recording studio as an engineer and a producer, and I wouldn't mind using a lot of these sounds in professional productions. I also built a nice jam with my 10-yr-old niece this evening, passing the phone back and forth. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Amazing. I buy lots of apps, and quite frankly - I've never bothered to write reviews. But ThumbJam is so incredible, I just HAVE to say something! This is hands- down the coolest app I have on my iPad. It works like a charm, and it just feels like it was made to show the creativity and power of this relatively new kind of platform. It's a nifty toy, but it also truly rises to a level where it deserves consideration as a real instrument. With some basic background in theory, you can totally be jamming in seconds. But even if you have no idea what the difference is between a scale and a chord, ThumbJam is built in a way even a beginner to music can sound like musician. My wife who has no training was able to pick it up without any problem. Buy it. You won't regret it.

Wow. Amazing sound app. Bought it this morning and could not put it down for hours. The sounds are amazing and it's really fun to play. The couple Smule products I bought don't hold a candle to this. It's got a lot of power and extras. The best instruments of the bunch really do sound amazing. The interface could use a facelift to look a bit more polished and iOS like, and a simpler Quick Start help would be useful, but the app is so good I wouldn't take off more than half a star for that. Thanks, Sonosaurus!

Very useable for live performance and recording.. I use this app quite often in live performance as well as recording situations. The sounds are really good, the interface is great and makes a lot of sense. The ability to chose your key and then be able to improvise with the choice of hundreds of scale options makes this a powerful tool for making music. I never use the record/loop function on this program and I think that's where this may fall short of complete and total awesomeness. But for what I use it for, there's no replacement. Worth every penny to me.

Way overrated. I gave Thumbjam an extra star for having plenty of good-quality samples, but other than that, this is not a serious musical tool by any stretch. Loops import at dramatically wrong tempos that can't thereafter be changed, and attempts to create a new loop instrument overdubbed on such an import absolutely refuse to come even close to being in sync (it always ends up several measures off from where the notes were played!) I hardly even want to get into the UI that makes it a struggle to actually be musical with unless your music is extremely simplistic, because I no longer think this app is targeted at musicians. For someone who just wants to run their finger up and down the screen and be able to produce scale runs without thinking about what they are doing, Thumbjam is fine … for anything more than that, it's too much of a pain to waste time with. Worst money I've spent on an app in quite some time.

Holy smokes!!!!!!. REVIEW: Best sound samples ever!!! The first app with samples that actually sound real. The use of the accelerometer for expression and dynamics is amazing. Even the electric guitar sounds better than the "ishred" app, with bending and fully controllable vibrato. This is pretty unreal. You can even adjust the playboard from large key size to ultra small. SOUND OPTIONS: A majority of the instruments sound great, except of course, the accoustic guitar (true for every synth), but you can record your own sound samples and it will scale it for you. I used my classical guitar and it still sounds processed. You can use effects as well which include stereo panning, delay (time adjust), slide or step progression, generous reverb levels, and huminize (adds a simulated "breath" or "pluck" to sounds giving a little more expression). Start mixing and you can create pretty convincing songs.

Jeez..... Update 3/2/10 - the best music app is now much better with the new release. Imagine having $1,000s of dollars in instruments and post-production gear in your hand for $7. I am a world music performer who uses real instruments and never considered using "synthetic" means until this app - it is that versatile. The sounds are pristine through the mixing board. Thanks mad scientist for creating this monster!!!!! Earlier review: As a recording musician who prefers acoustic instruments - I must say this app is incredible with it's expressive potential and superb sound qualities.

The Alpha and Omega of iOS music apps. This was the first music app I bought, and it is still my favorite. It comes with a wide range of instruments, multisampled for clear sounds across the whole range. It has an intelligent loop recorder, and it plays nicely with other apps. Now, with version 2, it can also control other apps, if they are enabled for virtual MIDI. This is important, because ThumbJam has a powerful, intuitive interface that's actually playable on the iPod/iPhone screen. Because ThumJam can be controlled with your voice now, this means that you can also control other apps (again, if they're virtual MIDI-enabled) with your voice too. Combine it with GarageBand or NanoStudio and you really do have a studio in your pocket.
