TuneLab Piano Tuner App Description & Overview

What is tunelab piano tuner app? Do not buy this app unless you are a professional piano technician. This is a professional tool that produces a custom piano tuning for any piano. It is part of the TuneLab line of piano tuning programs for smartphones, tablet computers and laptops that piano technicians have been using sine 2001.

Notable features:

* Capable of an accuracy to 0.02 cents.
* Measures and uses inharmonicity of the piano to construct a custom tuning.
* Provides an over-pull mode for more accurate pitch-raises.
* Can store hundreds of tuning files for individual pianos.
* Tuning files can be stored locally and in the Cloud on Dropbox.
* Provides many historical temperaments for period music.
* Switches notes automatically when you play the next note.
* Provides a strobe-like Phase Display for fine-tuning.
* Provides a versatile frequency spectrum display.

TuneLab lets you customize a tuning by sampling the inharmonicity for a few notes of the particular piano. You can choose the kind of tuning stretch you want by specifying different intervals for the bass, the treble, and the mid-range of the scale. These intervals can be octaves, 12ths, double octaves, etc. Good defaults are in place if you are not sure which settings you prefer.

After a custom tuning has been created from inharmonicity measurements you can store this tuning by name. The next time you need to tune that piano, or one very much like it, you simply load that same tuning file and start tuning. There is essentially no limit to the number of tuning files that you can store. TuneLab comes with some sample tuning files and an "Average" tuning file so you can start tuning right away without bothering to measure inharmonicity.

TuneLab covers the normal piano range from A0 to C8 (88 notes). The automatic note-switching feature makes it possible to enjoy hands-free operation. There is also easy one-touch manual note switching.

TuneLab has two different displays that are visible at the same time. One is the strobe-like Phase Display. This is a band where black squares move left or right depending on whether the note is sharp or flat. Tune the note to make the pattern stop moving. The other is the Spectrum Display. This is a graph of the frequency spectrum around the desired note that shows a peak in the audio frequency spectrum for every pitch present in the sound. The object in using this display is to tune the note until the peak in the graph is positioned at a central red line. The Spectrum Display makes it possible to do a rough pitch-raise without mutes since each string of a unison produces its own peak in the graph. Having both the Phase Display and the Spectrum Display visible at the same time gives you a more complete picture of the tuning than any single spinner-type or needle-type display.

Extremely Useful. I started tuning my pianos a couple years ago (m&h aa, yamaha c5) and this tool has helped me immensely! Calculating the stretch and inharmonicity really helped me have a solid starting point to work from. In addition the phase display has helped my aural tuning by providing visual feedback to what I hear. I'm not a pro and I'm sure I don't take advantage of all its features but as an amateur this too is indispensible! My pianos sound better than they ever had and I learned loads of great acoustic theory in the process. Well done!

Great app. I’ve been using TuneLab for about 15 years of my 40 year piano tuning career. I have some of the more expensive apps, but have come to sure TL more than the others because of its simplicity. It’s great for pitch raises also. I recommend it.

Ear tuner goes Tunelab!. After tuning pianos for 35 years by ear, I finally decided to try Tunelab. I have several friends in the area that use Tunelab. I have followed their tunings. I find that the tunings are very accurate and smooth. Now that I have used Tunelab for a few months, I find that I am doing better tunings than I ever have. You can detect slight changes while you are tuning that you never would be able to detect by ear. The other day I was tuning a piano that was only about 5 cents flat. I tuned the temperament area (I still tune the temperament octave first) and tuned down and came back to check the temperament. I was surprised that the temperament had already shifted a bit. I wouldn't have noticed this slight shift if I was tuning by ear. And then I would have tuned all of the treble to the out of tune temperament! This program has proved invaluable in one other way. I have two 7' grand pianos that I tune sometimes every day for several days in a row. It is very helpful to be able to see exactly how the piano is shifting day to day. I usually let it drift a bit up or down (1 cent or so) but when it shifts too much I know that I have to retune the whole piano. It would be impossible to make these exact assessments by ear. Finally, I have found Robert Scott to be very helpful in answering my questions via email. In fact, I started asking for an iPhone app a year before he made it available. He has done a wonderful job with this software. I am sure I will be using it for the rest of my career. And as I get into my 60's and 70's and start to lose my high frequency hearing, I will depend on Tunelab to help me get those high notes in tune!

Amazing - but a few requests. This app is great. It sets a beautiful temperament, stretches the piano quite nicely, and you get smooth progressions of all intervals of increasing beat rates as you go up the piano. The over pull feature works well. I had been using the free Entropy Piano Tuner app for awhile, and it got to the point where my ear could set a better temperament than it did, so I invested in TuneLab. I have been happy ever since. Very good for the price. Be sure to read the user manual before using, though. Just a few requests: Better UI. The app works beautifully, but it doesen't look very beautiful. A little prettier please! Other cloud support. Dropbox works well, but I would love to be able to save my tuning files to OneDrive, my primary cloud storage source. Google drive, iCloud Drive, OneDrive support needed for greater flexibility.

Fantastic. I have been using TuneLab for over 5 years now. As a piano technician and tuner I highly recommend this app. It is simple to use and accurate as well as cheaper than many of the other professional piano tuning tools and/or software available.

A must have tool. I have been a piano tuner for over 40 years. I started using Tune Lab 11 years ago and love it The most valuable thing about it is that I can tune even in extremely noisy locations with full confidence The most challenging situation involved tuning in a building full of noisy people. Pouring rain on a metal roof and concrete floor. The acoustics were so bad I couldn’t really even hear the piano. It would have been impossible to tune by ear but TuneLab saved the day. Thank you TuneLab

Very helpful!. I've been using this app for 4-5 years now. Can't imagine tuning pianos without it! Just make sure you understand it fully and know how to set it up!

Bring back the clock in landscape. My clock disappeared. I don't wear a watch when I tune. Please bring back my clock.

Excellent! Professional!. I am a Registered Piano Technician in the PTG; I have been using Tunelab Pro for almost 10 years now, and have been extremely happy with it. I have tuned pianos at 3 universities, 2 symphonies, and many professional artists such as Emmanuel Ax and Jim Brickman. I have received had a single complaint related to stretch or temperament. The GUI on this app is fantastic and very easy to use. I highly recommend this for the professional piano technician.

Great App. The best there is for tuning pianos in iOS.

TuneLab. To see the numbers while tuning is a dream come real. The most useful tool I have purchased

Indispensible app. I've been using this program for 10 years, first on a Pocket PC, then a Windows Mobile phone, and now on the iPhone. The iPhone version is similar with a slightly improved over-pull feature. I used to use an Accu-Tuner, but I can't imagine tuning without TuneLab. My only disappointment is the look of the iPhone app... it's actually uglier than the Windows version. Where are the colors and textures that every other iPhone app has? I'm hoping that some future version will look a little nicer.

A Piano Man in Bossier City, LA. Great professional piano tuning app. Nice, clean, intuitive user controls. Simple to use and very powerful. Easy to measure the piano's inharmonicity and generate a nicely matched tuning. Do a pitch raise quickly without having to use (and keep moving) mutes. Well done!

For Professional Use. I am a long time “by ear only” professional piano technician who started using TuneLab a decade ago just for experimenting. This is not a “do it yourself” tuning app for pianos. It is an excellent measuring tool for real piano technicians who already understand the fundamentals of piano tuning. Everyone has their preferences, but it is in the same league as Verituner and CyberTuner, other pro apps in the pricing stratosphere. It is especially useful for pitch raising and tuning in noisy environments. I recommend it.

Pro quality app. I've used nearly all of the professional piano tuning devices over the past 20 years, then it was machines, now it's mostly apps. I am an RPT, aural tuner by training, and a full time Tech. I wanted to give Tune Lab a try because the price was good, it offered some unique features, and I heard good things about it. I've had the app now 2 weeks, and so far so good. It's user friendly, versatile, and extremely sensitive. There's other very good programs for more money, but for me the value is here. My favorite thing about it over some others is it's stable note switching ability. It's ability to hear the necessary partials and still stay on sequence is a welcome attribute.

Worth your money. I've been an aural tuner for years. It took a bit to convince me to trust this, but I have to admit, my most satisfying tunings have come since using tunelab for iPhone. I'm impressed at it's comprehensiveness and simplicity. I'm also pleased how it doesn't seem to drain the battery too quickly like many other apps seem to. Be aware, this app will not improve your hammer technique, nor should you rely on it to lock in your unisons. If you are competent and confident in these areas, however, it could easily shave 20% off your typical tuning time. Be sure to read the users manual from the author's website. (I seemed to have problems viewing it in my iPhone, but read it just fine on my desktop.)

Okay but not my favorite. Tune lab gets the job done with acceptable results. It is good to have as a back up and I really like being able to see the peaks for a pitch raise. I also own an Accu-tuner 4 and prefer using that over tune lab for fine tunings. The Accu-tuner beats tune lab every time on the quality of tuning and ease of use when fine tuning.

Owner of California Keyboards. This is one of the finest tuning programs on the market today. I have used this product since it first came out. It is amazing. The thought of being able to pitch raise a piano without mutes is amazing and an increadible time saver. That alone pays for it in time saved.

Great app!. I love this app. I used it on my iPad to tune my piano and it was dead on. That being said, it needs better graphics and the ability to zoom a bit more so you can set the iPad further away and still see everything. But overall, it's excellent.

Help! I’m not a pro!. Please let me return this. Never should have bought it without looking into it further. I’m not a seasoned veteran and can’t understand what the app is asking me to do.

Tune Lab Program. I have been a piano technician for 32 years. I have only recently been experimenting with electronic tuning devices. Previously, I tuned only by ear. I really like the "Tune Lab" App. Looking forward to using it on a regular basis.

THE best piano tuning app. I have been tuning pianos for over 15 years. This is by far the ONLY tuning app a pro tuner should have. Anything else doesn’t compare. The spectrum analyzer makes it easy to tune without mutes if you wish. Bravo TuneLab. Bravo!

Easy, precise, and accurate. I did a full semitone pitch raise yesterday and the over pull feature saved me so much time. Definitely worth the money. I'm just an amateur tuner and this works great for me!

Great. Works flawlessly

Charged wrong price!. After much consideration and advice from colleagues, I opted to purchase Tunelab to assist my aural tunings with difficult temperaments and stretches. Throwing down $299.99 isn’t an everyday thing for me. You can imagine my frustration when instead of being charged the displayed $299.99, I was charged $320.99 instead! Unfortunately this means that my initial experience has left a poor taste in my mouth. I feel cheated. I’d like a refund for the difference.

awesome. there was an old piano at school that was way out of tune. im not a piano tuner, but ive read things here and there and have basic tuning equipment. ive fixed unisons on my piano in the past. i tried to tune this old piano by ear, but i couldnt get it to sound quite right. i tried using a free tuning app, and it actually made it worse. then i bought this app for 300 dollars. i was skeptical, but it is totally worth it. the old piano sounds great now. amazing. if you need to tune a piano, buy this.

Piano tuner. I have used Tune Lab on Pocket PC for more than 5 years as a full time piano tuner. I was excited to hear that it would become availably on the iPhone. Since I downloaded it I have used it on several pianos. It works very much like it does on the ppc. There are a few differences but nothing objectionable. I am glad to have it and I will probably use it exclusively from now on. Way to go Bob Scott!

Yes it works but …. Years ago, i would have rated this a 4 star. The app works, yes. The tunings are good, not great but certainly decent. But no improvements have been made in years! The app still looks like something from the seventies and most importantly, requires (Yes REQUIRES) a dropbox account for file sharing. After all these years milking for money, the author cannot be bothered to add icloud syncing (which is not difficult, being a software dev myself). I don’t always have an ipad available, being able to go between ipad and iphone is a must for me. No i don’t want bloatware dropbox on my iphone/ipad.

Robert Treadway. I've been using Tunelab for the IPhone for about two decades now and am very pleased with it. I have also used the more expensive programs out there and tho they are good they are not better quality. Also, Tunelab has good support if you have any questions. Try that with Cybertuner(they want you to pay extra for any help). I recommend Tunelab over the others in price and equal quality of product.

Best choice for easy, accurate tuning. What a joy it was getting to know this incredible bit of software recently. The design and functionality are very intuitive. I’ve never had such an easy time with the highest two octaves and I’m very pleased with the result. I’ve tried the alternatives and I can tell you, if you use anything else you’re wasting your money.

TuneLab. I'll write a more detailed review soon, but after having tuned 17 pianos in the last 3 days with this app, I'm impressed. I've used this app on a PDA for some time, and have used it's major competitor for quite a long time. This programme provides tunings that match my aural style more closely than its' competitor, and is about a third the price. As they say, don't buy unless you already know what you're doing, but this seems to be great value. The only downside this far is the battery life of the iPhone. 6 weeks later and Im still impressed. The tunings sound great- very even and smooth with a nice progression of beat rates. Some of my most critical customers have commented favourably. Good unisons, technique and aural checks are still essential, but this app makes a full day of tunings much less arduous. Battery life on the iPhone has improved, and is now just enough to get through a full day. Bear in mind that I do very little browsing- that kills the battery. Overall, great product and very well priced.

Happy customer. I've been using this program for a couple of years and I'm happy with the results. They quick and excellent support.

Needs to meet the competition. At first I thought this was a great app, but then another piano tuning app came out that highlights some weaknesses in this one: - it can't read just any note you play. You have to tell it what note you're playing, or else play a note within a couple tones of the one it's already reading. - the pitch raise issue, as mentioned in another review. Also, it can't give a pitch raise for individual notes, you have to set the whole thing to pitch raise. - you can't easily edit the name of a saved tuning. When you go to edit it, it deletes the whole name and you have to re-type it all, which is a problem if you've included the serial number in the name. - major problems with the auto note-switching in the bass - doesn't always give a reading for the top treble. It doesn't seem to be fast enough to pick up such a short tone as the top notes often make. - the various display modes don't give synchronized readings of a pitch. They all seem to hold different opinions of if a note is in tune. - updates are rare. An okay app, but could be much better.

Great tool. This is a very complete app for piano tuning, however, after one year of using it, I can point some "ergonomic" things that could be changed. When loading a saved tuning, it should reset the pitch raise, instead it keeps data from the previous tuning that we have to manually reset each time, and while I'm talking about pitch raise, it should save the bass bridge information in the tuning file, again we must set it for each tuning (to do a pitch raise of course)... Also, auto note switching could be an "On/off" button on the main display since many pianos give trouble to the iPhone in the first bass notes and after that it's okay. For now, we have to navigate to a sub-sub-menu back and forth to change this. Voila, just my toughs over an otherwise great product who have saved me a lot of time (but could save us even more time)! ;-) Thank you!

This works great. Perfect for pressure tunings. It's one thing to tune with no time constaints however in a concert you do not have that luxury. My tunings are now very consistent. I have never been able to get readings on the bass and treble before. This has improved my tuning. This has eliminated the guesswork. Thankyou.
