Enjoyable App!. Very nice for birding but there is room for improvement in indexing.... I also see birds that are not in the index? In Maine? It is nice to have this on my phone, though. I can’t carry a field guide everywhere but I do have the phone. I also shoot pics with a phone camera app (or with my 35mm) and I sm going to start putting the pics with my sightings. With a phone now my primary daily log, diary, journal - almost a life’s record - integrating the pleasures of watching birds into this fabric adds enjoyment... and that is always... enjoyable.

Big improvement. New review: two years ago this was one of the worst examples of how to build a field guide to birds app. Today, with its major make over, its stands out as an big improvement. My main negative comments remain the fact that there only photos (unlike Sibley which uses multiple drawings and iBird which is the only app with both drawings and photos.) Plus the photos can’t be zoomed larger to see more details. Further there are no field mark layers (unlike iBird) and few photos of females and juveniles. On the positive side the content is much deeper and the range maps a big improvement (tho they also can’t be zoomed). Songs are about the same; meaning too few and no details on where they where recorded. Previous review: When the app became free I thought it bring a lot of new features. And with a name like Audubon I had high expectations. But I discovered that the Audubon organization had nothing to do with creating this app. In fact most Audubon members loath it and use iBird or Sibley. Natureserve is way too hard to use. Why won't it find my location? Instead I have to always drag the pin from somewhere back east. This feature could do so much more. But entire interface is just not well designed like National Geo or iBird.

Ruined Life List. This app for me is ruined now. Shame on whoever made the decision to mess with the lists and make it impossible to track the birds you’ve seen without reporting the sighting and a location. I don’t need social credit I just want to track my birds. It used to be easy, find bird, click add to list, then it would be added and the bookmark would be highlighted. Yes I am one of the folks that paid $30 for this 10 years ago now it is garbage. The custom lists crash when attempting to open them so my 600 birds I’ve seen are now impossible to easily transfer elsewhere. And yes I’m on 6.0.8 and all permissions granted to this app and yes I’ve deleted and reinstalled and logged out and in. J. U. N. K.

Issues with 6.0.7. I love this app, and it’s been greatly useful tracking my birding findings and teaching me about species I wasn’t familiar with. Unfortunately the newest update has caused quite a bit of issues. Certain species, such as Muscovy ducks, can’t be reported; when I send in some reports/locations they won’t save; and I’ve needed to report the same species multiple times to try and get it to upload (if it ever does). Photos and notes seldom save, and if I want to upload photos I usually have to edit an existing sighting. I’m guessing the new share feature has effected how information is uploaded to the app. Whatever it is, I hope the issue is fixed soon as it’s making it difficult to use the app.

Old version better for breeding bird monitoring. My Audubon App that I had downloaded to my phone and had been using for years was automatically updated with a new online version that did not include the great selections of calls/songs present in the past App. I finally realized I had to again download the App to my phone for use away from a wi-fi signal and gain access to past content. Obsolete:Breeding bird monitoring done by ear and your latest versions have deleted the great selections of calls/songs that was in the original version that I used for 10-15 years. Looking for new app.

So far so good. I’ve literally just down loaded the app. So far so good. The only thing I’ve ran into was finding the Green Heron. I used google and found the bird and that’s how I found this app. When I downloaded the app I searched by description under Herons and in my area and it never showed the Green Heron. I typed it in manually and was able to track it. If I hadn't previously found this species on google I might have had a hard time because the app did not give me this Heron as an option. Otherwise, I’m enjoying the app and think others would too.

So sad. Please bring back ability to see all nearby observations!!!. This update is making bird life miserable for me. I have been using this app for about 10 years. I am an avid birder and rely heavily on it for the bird info where you can search by your location and pull up all the birds in your location that have been reported. Now you can only search by Hotspots and it only shows you daily lists, which are incredibly incomplete. I just went on vacation to Austin, Texas. I have never been there and tried to figure out what birds I had the potential of seeing. This new app version was completely useless. It kind of made me want to cry because I couldn’t figure out what birds were around me. Sooooo frustrating! I went to hotspots and the format for that was nearly useless. Why did you take this feature away after 10 years? Now it’s the beginning of migration season up here in New York and I have no way to know what’s coming in. The hotspots don’t help because they are so specific to that area, it won’t apply to where I live and bird. Please bring that feature back ASAP before it ruins the migration season we wait all year for.

Great app for zoology and biology students!. I recently took a vertebrate zoology course and really enjoyed the class! Audubon was instrumental in facilitating my interest in ornithology and bird watching. My favorite feature is being able to just click on a bird and get the identification information. The Bird ID feature is extremely helpful, it just makes seeing new species so much more exciting! Audubon provides scientific names, calls, habitats, breeding habits, etc. of hundred of species. Going out in the morning to bird watch just a little way from my college or apartment is wonderful. Going outside into nature and learning classification skills has made learning biology as my major a great experience! Thanks, Audubon!

Don't update, NatureShare users!. This latest update, late March 2018, removes all the features I loved about my NatureShare app - adding favorites, commenting, exploring the latest posts across the USA - gone without so much as a warning (the blurb says some of the community features have been suspended - read all). To cap it all, my photos have the wrong aspect ratio and cut off the head of the bird - something I can't edit. AND, if I want to edit the location, the app freezes. That, and the fact that I am only allowed to post one photo per sighting, makes this update a terrible mess. So Audubon developers, please hurry up and roll out an update with these fixes. You really shouldn't have offered this update until the app was good and ready. Shame on you! The good news is that I was able to download the Central Park Audubon app which still gives users full access to the NatureShare community and features. I applaud the effort to merge NatureShare with eBird but please enhance the Audubon app to incorporate the wonderful NatureShare community features we know and love. eBird is so dry and dull by comparison.

Love the App, but it has glitches. I just started using the this app and really like it. I have been collecting my bird sightings for 30 years in a book which I will continue to do, but the app allows me to enter my photos as well. There is a glitch however, when it comes to entering the date; at first it let me enter the date with no problems, but after 30 entries it won’t let me enter any dates. The only dates it shows are for future dates (ie 2021...). So, I started entering the date of my sightings in the notes section, which is useless when it comes to searching. I even tried deleting the app and reloading it and it still doesn’t work, not on my iPhone or iPad. Also, it would be nice if there was a way to enter the data on my computer and have it sync with the app.

Wish I hadn’t updated. This is my primary bird field guide, and I like it better than iBird which my husband uses. But, I’m really disappointed that I updated to the most recent version. When using the field guide, having the ability to sort on last or first “name” was a really important feature, and I miss it a lot. For example, looking at the Ducks & Geese family, you could sort by last, and all the geese would be together and all the ducks would be together. Unfortunately the app isn’t as functional as a field guide anymore. I would rather browse than search. Also, when you’re exploring sightings they’re no longer linked to the species guide. So if you see that someone saw a Northern Goshawk close to you, and you wanted to learn more about that bird you have to click over to the field guide and navigate to it. Or search for it. Very kludgy.

Ridiculous!. I paid for this app and the latest update is with out a doubt the absolute worst update ever! It is the biggest mess ever! Terribly confusing to say the least! Not easy at all to navigate. Had I not paid fir this it would be deleted! I can not believe the powers that be, actually thought this was an improvement! It was so easy before this update! All you had to do was go to the contents/legend and click on what you wanted to find! This new and improved version is just horrible. I seriously doubt I will ever use it again! It would be nice if this app went back to the way it was! If it isn't broken...don't fix it! Maybe just maybe that since this app has to be paid for that a full account of what improvements and changes were to occur, could be sent to all who own this app, asking for opinions on the potential changes and then take a vote if the change us actually needed, or wanted! That would be a common curtesy for the people who paid fir this app!

Great for all to journal, keep & learn. I am making good use of this spot for keeping track of daily sightings on our farm, and where ID’ing birds has become even more helpful and accurate. It is free, simple to navigate, encouraging, provides a place to maintain basically a space to journal with sighting details, and more, including ability to ask to receive info when other birds are seen in my area. I highly recommend this for beginners as that is how I started and am gradually learning more also about various accessible birding areas, though mainly keep up with and record what we see on our property in the countryside.

Back to being my go-to birding app. I had been experiencing issues with the app crashing on certain pages so that I couldn’t log bird sightings. The developers reached out to me to figure out exactly what the issue was, and with the most recent update it works like a charm again! Great customer service. I like the search features to determine what kind of bird I’m seeing, and of course the ability to log them in my mobile life list. Especially as a new birder, this app is great for helping me identify birds in the field.

Not happy with this update. Big loss!. I paid for this application years ago and loved it. It was my ‘go to’ app for bird sounds. Not any more. The sounds are non functional on my iPad, (an iPad Air) and on my husband’s iPad ( an old iPad 2). He is a software developer, so this is not “operator error”. I contacted Audubon and got no helpful response... (I got an email saying it works on the developer’s iPad.... How does that help me?) In addition, the location of the recordings is no longer included, which was useful information. I agree with other reviewers that you now have to go through way too many steps get to the information you want. I want the old app back, or my money back or someone at Audubon to at least correct the problem with the sound. Very, very disappointed. Just in time for Spring Birding... my formerly favorite birding app bites the dust. Bummed!

This is my favorite app. This is my most used app, and I love that you can actually identify a bird and I love its songs in calls that actually call a bird to your place and you can look up a bird and it tells you where they are most seen near you and you can actually add a sighting and when you’re hiking you can bring the app out and if you don’t know the bird you can identify it like how small what color what’s the shape I recommend this app if you’re in the city or if you’re in the country and oh, I forgot it tells you on the bottom if they’re in your country or if they’re in a different country and it tells you what the diet is of your bird or where is the habitat so you can actually go to the habitat

BizzzBirdz. I am so very sorry I “updated” to this new version. EVERYTHING I liked and used of the former version is GONE!!!! I used the old app to find new places near me to bird. This was good because it gave sightings within a 30 mile radius of my location. Often these sightings of new birds or migrants were in areas of the region new to me (I.e., fluddle), or some country road intersection. Impossible with the new version, as it “curates” sightings closest to one’s location. I don’t want to know about the Cardinal in the park down the street and miss the Avocet in a spring fluddle in a rural area 10 miles away from me! Also, the former version would give directions to hotspot or sighting locations; unfortunately the current version has removed this feature. I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with this new version, and will no longer recommend it to my birding friends as a tool to find new and interesting birds as they move through the state on migration.

Did not work. This app does not work in my iPhone (XR). I cannot click any of the options on the top of the screen or the bottom because they appear half cut off the screen and blocked by the WiFi/Data/Battery at the top. Please allow the app to be compatible with the XR model. Also, I liked how the app allowed you to record all the birds you see besides just finding them. I got another app that allows you to show a picture of a bird you saw and the app with identify what bird it was. It worked pretty well after I tested it. I would definitely come back to this app if Audubon adds “Photo ID” and an XR update to the app. 🤗

From poor to worse.. I was going to delete the previous version due to how poorly some details are thought out. In particular the fact that search criteria is not sticky, is terrible for functionality. Each time you filter a search by location for example, it disappears after every bird looked at. But I thought I’d wait a while and see if an update might not improve this app and today after the latest update - it’s completely unusable unless you create an account. Great step backwards. One can’t even test the app out without being forced to give your data and sign up. That shows a lot about what sort of company this is. I’ll find other options. Besides, Audubon is turning into a ‘sky is always falling’ bunch of activist alarmists, anyways. I just want to enjoy birds - without politics.

Arg bad updates strike again. I can’t tell at all about the quality of the update or if it is better than the old version or not. That’s because I have been too busy trying to find the 60+ birds on my life list the app lost after updating. I went to the NatureShare web-site and still had my list, but entering each bird into the new app is a royal pain in the neck. E.g., if I’m entering in a bird I saw several years ago, I am twirling the “day” wheel for a long time. Then I have to twirl it back when I invariably go too far. Then sometimes forward again. Next, I have to zoom the map out laboriously, then scroll all the way across the country, in some cases, to re-enter where I saw the bird. What a pain in the neck! And I have to search through my life list for each bird to find the ones not included. This app is far from the only one with this type of problem, but come on now: THE DEVELOPERS KNEW THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM BUT RELEASED A HALF BAKED APP UPDATE ANYWAY.

This app is amazing!. I was told about this app 3 or 4 years ago. I absolutely love it. I share it will all our bird loving friends. I come out many evenings all play screech owl calls. Its always fun to hear them respond or fly up and land to check out whats happening. We live in central Texas and are amazed at the variety of birds we have each day and the the birds that pass thru for few days during migration. This app helps to identify them and recognize the songs!

Good, but clunky to navigate. Been using this app for years (since before it was free), primarily for the sounds and eBird sighting feature, but occasionally for range maps and visual IDs. Most of the time, it gets the job done. My biggest issue is the clunkiness of searching for species and using "Find Birds with eBird." It'd be nice to be able to search by four-letter codes (e.g. WTSP) and go directly to eBird sightings from a species profile page (many fewer birders use NatureShare). There are also some species, generally those with limited North American ranges, lacking recordings, especially recordings of calls.

Love it!!. I’ve had this app for years. I live in Luna Pier along the shores of Lake Erie. I love the outdoors and bird watching. I’ve used this app to figure out what types of birds I rarely see that migrate through our area. I also use the call sounds to figure out what bird I’m hearing but not seeing! It truly helps to find that elusive birdie and know what it is that I’m hearing! I have the luck of having Coopers Hawks nest and have their babies for 9 years in a row in the woods behind our home! This app helped me learn a lot about this beautiful stealth hawk!

Very helpful! Better than older reviews reflect!. I was hoping the reviews from a couple years ago after an “update SNAFU” were not still relevant. It appears to work fine now and is quite helpful and intuitive. After only a few hours of use this old person could figure it out very fast. We recently moved to a remote island in Michigan. I needed some help identifying all of the many birds here, because our Audubon book can’t get to the island until next month. Very pleased with the ease of use, thanks folks!

Love this app!. I don't write reviews so this is my first. This app is an easy 5 Stars and I've not yet accessed all of the features. I became a backyard birder after moving to a rather remote area in the southwest desert where dove, quail and an occasional hawk were my only "winged residents" until I created a sheltered oasis, if you will. With time and patience, my yard was a flutter with song and feather. I've tried to identify my favorite bird (who I named "Follow") for years, to no avail, until I did a quick search by shape with this awesome app. "Follow," who hopped along quite close behind me as I watered my various gardens, is a sweet Desert Towhee!

Birds!. This really has been a fantastic app to help me get into bird watching. Being able to see hotspots has already helped me find some great new places to see a ton of birds. The local sightings paired with the identify birds (narrowed down by state!) really helped me figure out WHAT I was seeing.. or at least have a fighting chance at doing so. There is an obvious bug with saving sightings as others have stated. When trying to add species to previous sightings it just doesn’t make it past the location page. You have to back out, click on the “add sighting” section, and hope that the “complete sighting” button appears. Sometimes it takes a few tries. They seem to be working on it.

Demands that you create an account. I used to love this app. But the new version demands that you create an account before you can use it at all. This is ridiculous. Why should I violate my privacy in order to look up a bird? I do realize that companies and organizations need to make money, and that software costs money to develop and maintain. So I suppose it is legitimate to track your users and sell their data if that’s the only way that you can afford to provide a free product. However, it should be possible to opt out of having your data tracked by purchasing the information that an app offers rather than having your every move recorded. This option is not available at all, and as a result, if you wish to protect your privacy, the app is useless. I am deleting it from my phone.

Upset about this update.... I’ve loved using the Audubon bird app, especially for Natureshare. Despite its bugs and lagginess, I’ve loved the idea of it. Ever since news came out about the Natureshare website being taken down and the app the only way to access Natureshare, I’ve hoped that Audubon would incorporate features on the app that would make it more user friendly. But I did not expect a complete revamp! And the new app is not good. It’s laggy, I don’t even know how to access the Natureshare community, and my sightings aren’t in order of how I’ve seen them, but all jumbled up in a confusing way! Please, Audubon, fix these things so I can access the community! All the app needed was a couple things added and bug fixes!

Went the from OK app to unusable.. This was an OK bird app until the recent overhaul. Never my go to app but nice to use for a second review of additional pics and songs. Now it is virtually unusable by a birder. The choices to look up a bird are alphabetical by first word of the name -ridiculous. At least the last app you could choose alphabetical by the last part of the name - much more useful. The alternative is look up by family, with the families being listed in alphabetical order, even more ridiculous. There seems to be no way to look up anything in phylogenetic order - you know, like every other bird guide, checklist, eBird, etc that birders use. Deleting it now. A couple of the other field guides - reptiles and mushrooms, still work but the mammals, insects, and others have not been updated and no longer work. Too bad because these were good guides that don’t exist elsewhere.

My Favorite App. This app is easily my most used besides Safari. I love the explore feature; it’s given me so many tips on where to find great birding spots in my area (and great hiking too!) It also helps me know which birds to watch out for when traveling. After choosing a spot, I can study all of its recently seen birds and brush up on their calls in just one or two clicks. (Plus, there are often three or more different sound samples for variety, and most all common noises a species makes are included.) I keep my life list here and though I am relatively new to birding, I’ve added almost 60 new birds to my life list in the two years I’ve had this on my phone! It’s a great tool to improve birding skills, and I’ve definitely become a better birder since I downloaded this. More to love: 1) It’s free! 2) You can download a “field guide” of bird information to ID without Wifi - a lifesaver for No Service or data-saving birding 3) You can set alarms to tell you when certain birds are seen in an area. I live in the north, so I have one set for snowy owls! 4) If you see something unfamiliar, the app can help you narrow down your choices based on characteristics like state, time of year, size, color, shape, voice, flight pattern, tail shape, habitat, and wing shape. Very helpful. If you’re on the fence, please try this app. I can’t recommend it enough!

Second Time’s The Charm. I got this app several months back and used it once, but I found the interface annoying and the information I needed nigh inaccessible. About a week ago, curious about a tiny unknown bird in the yard, I downloaded it again, and I guess the second time’s the charm—I love it! I’m not sure if the interface has been redesigned, but for a (very) amateur birder like myself, all the information (BirdID 😍) is incredibly easy to find, and logging is simple. I’m stoked to finally feel like I have the tools necessarily to get deeper into birding—so if you get the app and you’re not sure, give it a chance!

Requires your email address or linkage to your Facebook data. I used this free app for nearly 2 years - suddenly an update required me to establish an ‘account’ with a user name, email address and password in order to keep using it. I did that, and a short time later another update was issued, saying that since so many users complained that they did not want to establish an account to use this free app, this update removes that requirement. I updated the app, re-launched it, and it still requires me to either log in with my password, or log in via my Facebook account (another intrusion). So i deleted this app, rebooted my iphone, re-downloaded and re-installed it, and it still insists on intrusionary login to ‘my account’ with a password, or consenting to Facebook linkage. So, i’m relegating this Audubon app to the trash heap.

Used to be my favorite — no more!. I assumed the glitchyness and tendency to crash was the fault of the aging iPod Touch I used it on. I should have read the reviews... I use the app on my iPod so I’m not able to connect with data in the field. I HAVE to be able to download the field guide, or it’s useless! I started the ‘few minutes’ process at 6:05 pm. It was still loading when I returned home over three hours later. In the six weeks since I’ve owned this device (6th gen iPod Touch) I have installed, force-quit, deleted, reinstalled and anything else I could think of, and the app still doesn’t work unless I’m home by my wifi which is hardly optimal birdwatching conditions. I’m disappointed, because this really was my favorite app, especially for bird song. I’ve used it since the days when I had to pay for it! But I’m switching to Merlin for a free app, and buying Sibley. Sorry, it’s been good to know you.

When will you fix this?. This app was perfect until you updated it a few years ago. I was probably your best unpaid advertiser, as I told everyone about it. Since that time, you ‘updated’ it, and I’ve been totally unable to use this! No photos, no ease of use, no response when tapping the ‘Go to Settings’ advice (how many thousands of times should a person tap that, I wonder). As there are many others who’ve been complaining about this for at least three years, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO FIX THIS APP? I know it is doable, because it was already created beautifully—the original app was perfect!! You messed it up, we can’t use it, and you won’t fix it. What is the problem?

Great app, but I wish you did the same for your other guides!. I have loved all of the Audubon apps and find them very useful. That is, the ones you still support. I love Audubon, but I am incredibly disappointed in the way you have handled the other apps including the guides on Butterflies, Fishes, Fishes of the Caribbean, Insects & Spiders, Mammals, Mushrooms, Reptiles & Amphibians, Trees, and Wildflowers. None of these apps can even be found on the app store anymore. I find it very disloyal to your customers to discontinue apps that they have purchased. If they were free, I wouldn't have a problem, but many of those apps won't even work anymore since IOS 11. Please update the apps or issue a refund to all of your customers.

Update bug fix. I love this app, it’s been very helpful for me as a new bird enthusiast being able to identify them and know their sounds and commonly found locations. However, since the update Thursday, I click on the app and all it shows is the home screen, can’t get past the main welcome screen to see any features. I know it’s probably just a glitch that needs adjusting as this happens often with other apps like SnapChat. But I just wanted to make sure developers were aware it’s not just an isolated incident. Hoping for an updated version soon.

Very disappointed in the new app update. The new app update was a huge disappointment and I will likely stop using the app as a result. I did not previously use Audubon Birds as a field guide. There are better apps out there for that and I prefer a hard copy over digital anyway. The updates to improve the usability of the field guide are of no interest to me and nearly all of the features I have bragged about for years about the old app are now gone. I loved how I could easily track migrations in my area by looking at sightings of all birds in my area within the last 15 days at the touch of a button. You could then see where unique sightings were occurring and possibly have a chance of going and locating the bird for yourself. I also liked the feature where you could select a state and month and then get a list of all the common birds in that area for the time of year as well as all the uncommon birds. It was a great tool when preparing for a trip to a new area. These features are now gone and the app is nothing more than a beginner’s field guide and an opportunity for Audubon to get all their news in front of you. Bring back the old app!

Difficulty in logging past sightings. I am liking this app so much that I have been trying to transfer sightings logged in other apps to this one. However, the use of a skeuomorphic scroll wheel for inputting the date makes this rather frustrating, especially if the date requires scrolling back past a year. Please create a way to simply type in the date, or separate day and year so one doesn’t have to literally scroll back multiple hundreds of days to log past sightings. This is particularly important as there are sightings one may not likely get to repeat in their lifetime.

Terrible interface in every section. I had to create an account to enter a list. Then it assumed what my current location was and named that “home”, both assumptions were incorrect. There seems to be no way to change them. Why keep track of where my sightings are if it can’t even tell where I am? If I go to “edit” my account info, the cursor shows up on the right edge of the screen. I can enter six characters only. And although there’s a “save” option above, in case one manages to make a change, it’s greyed out and doesn’t work. So I cannot edit my home to appear correctly, although I am working hard to attract more bird species to my feeders. So many elementary problems! The only things that work in a logical manner are the parts about birds themselves. The app is much less useful than a field notebook. If there’s not a big makeover upcoming, I’m deleting it.

Old Version was Easier. While I have since learned how to navigate this new version, it took my awhile to figure it out. I’m not a fan of the new sighting system that only shows what’s been seen very close to me. I preferred having a larger range so I could see what’s been sighted in a larger area, such as Galveston or Houston. Due to the update, I have to search up specific locations within those areas instead of one big picture which makes it somewhat more complicated than the original app, especially if you’re not familiar with the area you’re searching for. In addition, the app is crashing terribly any time I try to scroll through sightings. Also, it logs me out every time I exit the app which is annoying to have to type my email and password in every single time. I can never finish checking out sightings because of the crashes. As of right now, the app is useless, which is disappointing since I paid a good bit of money on it.

Useful App. For the most part, this app is easy to use, and helpful in identifying birds you see, and birds you only hear. I have been surprised to find such a variety of birds at this location, where we have been for the past two and a half years… I would not have known what they were without going quickly to this app. I am a little disappointed with the location and map part. It seems as though where I am, and my saved location I named “Home,”are never in the same place! The few times I have not been able to figure out what kind of bird I am seeing, I just send photos to them, and I hear back within a couple of days.

Amazing app. UPDATE: I love the app, but both my wife and I *hate* the new interface! 😡 Whatever Audubon paid to have this app redesigned, they lost big-time. The new interface REQUIRES you to create an account, and it's almost impossible to easily find what you're looking for. Dropping my earlier 5-star rating to a generous 2 stars. This reeks. My wife and I have never been "bird watchers", but since being able to enjoy our morning coffee outside every morning, we've taken to really enjoying the busy company of our feathered friends. I downloaded this app to help identify the calls, and WOW! this app is terrific. It helps identify the multitude of calls, shapes, colors, regions, etc, and has really opened up our appreciation and knowledge. To cap it off: We were trying to confirm a Carolina Wren on our patio this morning; I opened the app and started playing the different calls of the Carolina Wren, and the next thing we knew, this little guy had braved hopping right up next to where we were sitting, trying to locate where the calls were coming from! I silenced my phone momentarily, and he flew a few feet away, but as soon as I started the calls back up, here he came again, trying to find his invisible friend! That alone is enough to merit a 5-star rating for this incredible app. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Superb. This app has opened so many doors for me and my wife. Growing up, I’d always wondered about the actual names and facts about my local flora and fauna, and this app delivers that ability to easily identify that I’ve so yearned for since childhood. I’ve been able to positively identify pretty much every bird in my area and out of state through location features on the app. DEFINITELY allow the app to use your location, as it will then recommend known birds of the area, which makes identification extremely easy. The bird call samples on the app also help big time. If you’ve always wanted to know the names of the birds you see every day, get this app. Truly magnificent

So why did you change it?. Update: 5/4/18 Despite the updates to the major format change, it’s still pretty much unusable. Serious Q; why did you change it? I’m sure many of your long time users would be willing to give you useful feedback. I bought this app a few years ago. As a novice birder, I was taught that in order to identify a bird, it helps to see what birds are in your area at that time. With the previous version of this app, It was so easy to find ‘Birds Near You’ or ‘Notable & Rare’ sightings. It was easy to click on a bird and find ‘descriptions’, ‘sounds’, and ‘sightings’. These are all gone, or at the least VERY hard to locate. If I am able to figure out what I’m possibly seeing, I have to get out of that screen and go find it elsewhere in order to see a picture or hear sound. By then the bird is gone... and oh well, too bad! Basically, it no longer intuitive like it was before. Of ALL the apps I have, this was the one I used the most. Now...well, I’m really sorry to say, it’s the most frustrating.

Best app ever!. I got this app a few years ago and it changed my life! I love birds so much now. Includes information on every part of the individual bird’s lives, and shows an easy-to-read range map of where each bird lives. Includes most of North American bird species, and many rarities. Plus, it is much easier to add sightings than eBird or Merlin. Also allows for easy identification and allows you to just read about birds for fun and explore the app. Also, you can add photos of the birds you have seen. However, the only common bird that is missing from this app is the Chihuahuan Meadowlark, which lives in the southwestern United States.

An Amazing app. I love this app, I am a (Hunter) Falconer of Falconry. And it truly helps me locate places where to find my birds of prey AKA Raptors around the world no matter where I am. I just began using it and it’s amazing how it gives you the time and days also shows Hotspots where they mostly are seen. I would always use it when I need help finding any raptors for Falconry. I would definitely recommend it to other Falconers but I will say also “It isn’t for everyone” Different people will have different tastes for apps and also Falconry isn’t meant for everyone. It truly helps locate any bird anywhere but remember they are “LIVING CREATURES” and they will eventually move to a new location and that goes for all birds. I will probably always use it if I need information to locate the best spots where they were last seen. Give it a try Falconers and I also recommend Bird watchers too.

Do not buy, latest version is awful. The latest update to this app has taken what used to be simple to use and changed it into something that is very confusing and much too complicated to have any real practical use. There are too many layers to go through when trying to do anything regarding identification of a bird. When you finally get to put in a state and time of year, the app crashes! The signing in is a pain. Too much extra information is on the screen that a real birder does not care about when wanting to make a quick ID. The old app was not broken, so somebody decided to fix it, bad move. If this doesn’t get corrected, I will probably delete it and use another app. It is too bad I was forced to give it a star at all!

Not into “birding”. Even the term “birding” itself sounds like a nerdy version of an illegal act. But there were feeders outside our house when we bought it this fall and my kid wanted me to keep feeding the little beasties. Turns out seeing woodpeckers flit into the feeders, Cardinals brighten the back yard, and sparrows act like little flying teenagers was actually pretty entertaining. I got tired of saying, “look at that bigger bird on the right. No. The other one,” to my kids so I looked for a way to find their real names. That way is this app. Now I can enjoy the second nerdiest hobby in the privacy of my home! (First is is philately- look it up loser). Seriously the app is quick to load, doesn’t crash, and help ID birds. Get it.

Some helpful features, some glitches. This is a helpful guide for recording birds you already know, but I find it difficult to ID birds using their criteria. I tried putting in the size and features of Bluebirds, but it would only suggest Tree Swallows. Also, when you are adding a sighting, you have to be sure to click “Save” in the upper right corner vs “Add Species” which is the bigger, more visible button under the bird info. I wish it had a picture ID feature. I was really disappointed when we went to Hawaii and discovered that it only records North American Birds. However, on the plus side, it does allow you to save more detailed notes than Merlin.

Makes birding with mom so informative and fun!. My mom and I are loving this app because of the calls that help us to better identify birds and the pictures. She has many Audubon books and has kept track of her sightings in them, so it’s a fun place for us to note the ones we see at home together. We like that we can see hot spots around us and get alerts on sightings, though we haven’t received any yet. Good for all ages and skill levels. My mom has dementia and has lost her ability to use her phone easily, so we use it together on my phone, but she has no issues with guidance.

Great app. Great app, will be amazing to have in French and Spanish too

Great horned owls!. Cool app! Just love being able to play the calls and identify my birds that way. I used it to identify a pair of great horned owls in the woods behind my house. Their call is so distinctive I can say with certainty it was a pair without actually sighting them today! (My husband has seen them in daylight several times- always when I’m not there!!)

Talk to birds!. I used this fantastic app today to have a conversation with a white breasted not hatch we talked back-and-forth for about 10 minutes absolutely amazing!

Language. It would be amazing to have the app translated in different languages (for bird names personnally). Maybe only the bird names in a language selection box on each bird page. Bird name are often so weirdly translated. Great app though!

Great. We are enjoying this app a great deal - excellent addition to the Audibon text book we have

Great so far!. I’ve only been using app for a short time but I’ve really enjoyed it! It’s very user friendly and I love listening to all the calls while I read up on each bird!

Excellent app.. This is just what I was looking for. It has a comprehensive list of search options. Then it gives a list of possible birds from your entries. Choose one and it then gives a list of similar birds, which really helps. The songs clips are great. The map is easy to use. I have tried others, and was not adverse to paying money for the right one, but this has all I need, and then some. Well done and thank you. Peter

Great resource. I really appreciate using this app to identify the birds I fins around me in my world.

Loving this app!. App helped me quickly identify a bird this morning that I hadn’t seen before. Loving it!

John. Excellent!-my go to reference!

Tweet! Tweet!. Fantastic. Easy to use. Sounds are extremely helpful.

Loving this App so far!. Recently got this app and it’s excellent. I bought the Peterson Field Guide app a few years ago and now I’m using this free app way more. I really like pictures, information and ability to log my sightings!

doesnt work. i used to use this all the time. now it insists on me registering an account. it asks for my email address then when i submit it, it opens a blank screen. been trying for a month and same thing. no update on app store. downloaded merlin but would prefer to use audubon again. why force people to enter an email address?? and why let this issue go on for so long without a fix? such a shame.

Audubon app. Love it !!

Great for Photography. This app is a great help with my bird photography.

What happened???. I have enjoyed using this app for four years. Today, when I opened the app, all my sightings (hundreds of them!) history was gone. Needless to say, I’m not impressed.

Thank You for Bringing Back Landscape!!. 2020-04-03: Thank you for bringing back LANDSCAPE!! FIVE (5) stars for you!! ORIGINAL REVIEW: App NO Longer Works in LANDSCAPE. The ipad is not a large, phone-less iPhone, nor is it a large iPod Touch. iPad users work in LANDSCAPE.

My go to bird app…. ….but it would be better if I could search for species in the guide by 4-letter alpha code, a feature that Cornell Lab’s Merlin already has. Thanks!

Huge help!. This app was definitely a huge help to me as I’m just getting into bird watching and it saves me from having to lug around the books I use to keep track of my sightings and the books I use to identify the birds! This app wraps that up into one nice little package!

Doesn’t work. Won’t open, just crashes. iPhone 12 Pro Max

Great App. Really good replacement for iBird. Would appreciate a fully embraced Dark Mode (white text on black background).

Fantastic Resource!. I recently moved to a rural area and there were 2 feeders plus a bird bath in the tree. The owner of the house suggested what seeds to buy and it’s been steady flow of birds since March. I downloaded the app last night and have already identified 3 birds that I hadn’t seen in the city. Highly recommend this invaluable resource. 5 Stars!

Easy bird ID. Select size, colour, wind shape or a number of other categories to ID the bird you just saw easily and accurately. Also confuse your cat by playing recordings of various birds inside the house. ;)

Great reference. I like being able to explore sightings in my area to see what other birdwatchers are finding nearby. I enjoy using this app to find out more info on territories and eating habits of specific birds I am interested in. I love the audio files and pictures to help in identifying unfamiliar birds. Birdwatching with the help of this app is fun and I recommend it.

Amazing!. This app has helped me find so many new birds. Birds that I’ve never heard of!

Finally!. I’ve tried a few apps recommended by others but they were too difficult for me to figure out (I’m not skilled in terms of technology) and finally went to this app, which I can manage pretty easily. I was able to enter my first two sightings. Now I’m on the hunt for more birds (actually, I always was :)

Incredible App!. This app is really helpful with learning bird calls and figuring out where certain birds live! An issue is that the sounds for the lesser prairie-chicken and tricoloured heron don’t work and the little egret has the snowy egret sounds. It would be much appreciated if you fix this!

Fantastic!. I am loving this app, and have used it tremendously since moving to the country! It has been very easy to navigate thus far, and I just completed my first sighting with photo and location within a minute - while standing still enough to not disturb the birds just steps away from me! All great so far! 👍🏻

DISAPPOINTED!!! and miss the old version. Missing the Notable and Rare section. Sightings used to be up-to-date to the hour...no longer. Glitzy and techy but not as handy and useful as before.

Great App. Has been invaluable to me as I learn birding.

The best!. Easily my favourite app. Easy to do, and helps me learn a lot. I do wish there was a social component though as I want to see what birds my friends are seeing.

A great app. For a novice birder this app is great. It shows recent sightings in my neighbourhood including songs/sounds. I have seen many of these birds, now I know what they are

Great tool to identify birds.. Not an experienced birder so I really like how easy it is to identify a new one.

Great App. Full of great info and extremely easy to use

best for bird identification. this is app is amazing! not to mention you can download the bird field guide to use when you don’t have internet connection. i also love if you don’t know what bird it is, you can describe it, and the app will try and find the best match! one time a hawk landed on a branch, i got some pictures, but i didn’t know what it was. but when i described the bird, it found it right away! it was a juvenile cooper’s hawk. oh and it also has different pictures for the genders of the birds, and what age they are. one last thing i want to mention, you can report your bird sightings! i would TOTALLY recommend this app. i can guarantee you there is no app better than this one. thank you for making this app, it is amazing.

Great app. I have enjoyed this app for a very long time and recommend it to all bird enthusiasts!

👍🏼. Great App! Works quite well!❤️👍🏼

Screen rotation.????. Absolutely love this app, as i am an avid bird watcher... only thing i would change is the ability to rotate phone upside down so speaker is facing out whilst using calls and still be able to use app as normal.!!!! Otherwise Love It..!!!

Sibylle. Love this app! One way or another you are able to find your birds! Sound and size were most helpful but also narrowing it down to your location is really helpful! So much fun and easy to use!

Great app. Enhances my knowledge.

Great app. Such an amazing tool at my disposal. Brings a whole new dimension to the birding lifestyle. Thank you

Great App. Easy to use.

Easy to Use!. Great app!

Wonderful!. I love this app!

Eve. App does not recognize Canadian locations. It gives poor suggestions.

Mztaylor70. I love the app, but after the last update, I lost all of my saved sightings! Everything reset to zero! So bummed 😞

Awesome!. This app is super helpful when it comes to identifying and researching birds. Even the calls are included? Great! Helping me find out when I saw a warbler and I had no idea what it was! This app is great, I use it almost every day, but I have seen a few birds that I am unable to find on Audubon. But I would hate rate this app less than five stars! Thanks! -mice

I hate new version so much I deleted. Funny how so-called improvements are always regressions. After using this app for >1 year, I succumbed to updatitis. Big mistake...I should have known better. Never again. The new version is so bad I have removed it.

Amazing way more people should rate. This is absolutely amazing. Helps with environment and provides lots of information😃 definitely get this if you like birds or if you want to help the environment

Great app. Very much enjoy this app. Birds respond to the sample calls! Super cool!

Birding made easy. This app is one of my favorites. I’ll find myself just scrolling through and listening to the birds. I’m still a novice when it comes to birding but this app makes it far less frustrating when I’m trying to figure out what bird I just saw or what ones I’m listening to. My goal is to turn part of my yard into a bird sanctuary and this app is helping me understand what birds I’m attracting with my feeders and houses. I definitely recommend. I’m running it on an iPhone XR.

Love the update. I really love how intuitive the update makes the app. I am new to birding and really appreciate the many different options to identify birds as well as just the overall re-design of the app. It seems much cleaner, colorful and consistent. I always had crashing issues with the previous version and had a really hard time understanding the different functions. I can’t wait to see how it improves over time!! it’s really got me hooked on search for bird babies ✨🐦💖

Pictures?. I’ve had this App, but haven’t used it often. This morning I thought I’d take a look. I’m apparently missing something, or I'm having similar problems as some others. When I have the birds listed with thumbnail pictures and name, either alphabetically or by family When I tap the thumbnail, with the alphabetical listing I get a blank screen, which is obviously isn’t helpful. With the thumbnails listed by family it takes me to square boxes, each of which are labeled for a particular breed (no picture). If I tap on the box, I’m taken to the same black screen as I get with the alphabetic list. Could be I don’t know what to do, but it seems at this time that the App is, sadly, worthless.

Keeps getting worse. This was once a fantastic app. Now, terrible. 1. The photo feed is worthless. Instead of showing thumbnails and then being able to open them, it show tiny full resolution pics which take minutes to load....then you can’t open them up and zoom in. Also there is no way to sort them, so you have to scroll through everyone’s Robins to see something interesting. 2. The map only shows hotspots, unless you are searching for a specific species. 3. There once was a rare bird alert, which was awesome....not anymore. The only thing I use it for now is bird identification.

New version is much harder to use. Since updating to the new version I don’t seem to be able to sort birds by last name like I could before and there are no filters, like for state or area where you are, etc. So you have to look through all the birds instead of just ones in your region. Also I can’t play bird sounds out in the field even though I have the app set up for cellular usage, not just wi-fi. The sounds play fine when I am on wi-fi. The app is fine if you know the name of the bird you’re interested in, but not if you want to compare a few possibilities.

From Nana’s Window. I’m new to the joy of bird feeding/ watching. I have a feeding station set up on top of my window a/c unit. I researched the best foods for wild bird winter feeding , and I make my own mix , I have such a good time watching my little feathered friends eat , and to see who will show up each day. This app made it fun and easy to identify and catalog each of my little visitors, it’s my new favorite thing to do!

Love it!. Reading reviews that unfavorably compare this interface to the previous one, but since I don’t have experience with the old one, all I can say is that I love this app!! Easy to use, full of info, and the ability to keep a sighting log w field notes all in one place! The only drawback is that I don’t habitually keep my phone with me when I’m sitting on my porch, but that’s not really a problem, is it? 😋

Educational and fun. I’m a novice in the bird world but it has been a fun experience to pull this app up and be able to hear the different calls of the birds that are around when I can’t see them. I kind of wish there was a way to download the recordings to use for my phone’s ringtones, that would be neat! I like the fact that the maps are shown where the traditional areas the migratory birds are, and it’s great that I can expect different sightings based on the colored maps.

Great birding app. I have had this app for many years. It is very helpful in identifying birds by sight or call. The bird’s range is helpful to confirm or eliminate any bird. The call section is awesome. I had been searching to identify a bird since a teenager. Finally I listened to every single bird call to find the mysterious bird. Unfortunately it was a bird beginning with a W - the white throated sparrow. Mystery solved. I also like the sightings section to post confirmed sightings.

Enjoying this so much!. I started using this app yesterday after switching from another ‘big name’ bird ID app. I’m a casual birder with a curiosity to learn what’s in my own backyard. Audubon is so easy and actually fun to use. It’s straightforward and logging in a sighting only takes a few moments. The layout is attractive, intuitive, and easy to understand. Thank you for making this available! Also, no ads! This is quite a gem of an app.

Excellent!. I’m amazed at the app’s ability to ID individual birds when so many are singing at once! I love this app and from what I see it’s free! Will there eventually be a subscription? Anyway I’m having so much fun with this. Example: this morning I heard the usual robin but when I started the app it said there was also a wren and when I listened closer there it was. Will be using it on hikes.

What happened. This has always been one of my favorite apps. I enjoyed posting my sightings & adding the different birds I saw to my life list. I recently got a new phone (I went from an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 8). Now I’ve lost my account completely. When I try to sign in I’m told I have an invalid password. This is the same password I’ve used on this account since I downloaded this app. I absolutely do not want to sign in using my Facebook account. When I tap on “Forgot Password” nothing happens. I’ve tried emailing you twice and am disappointed that you don’t respond to my call for help. This is my last attempt to get my data back before I delete the app. VERY DISAPPOINTED & FRUSTRATED!

Great App. I had trouble at first getting the App to let me sign on. When I entered my email, the app kinda got stuck and wouldn’t go forward. Here’s the work around: Close the app (iPhone requires flicking it off the screen to actually close) then reopen. When I did that, it continued on so I could give it a user name and password to create an account. I haven’t figured out the search mode very well but it clarified what bird I was seeing after I guessed at the name.

New Update Stinks. While the app itself is great the update has made the usability in my opinion poorer. When trying to look at sightings it seems to only show one or two VERY local places and you have move your location but by but to see the more local places. In my area alone it’s only showing one hotspot that I’m positive not many people record sightings at, however I record at a place about 3 miles away 3-4 times a week and it doesn’t show up. The “pin marker” map was so much better and better to actually find sightings.

I love this app😍!!!!!!!!!. I just started bird watching and I didn't really know any kinds of birds, but when I got the app I started knowing all kinds of birds. And usually when I get a app it cost money some how if it's premium and you can't do something without paying actual money and I just end up deleting the app, with this app there is no premium and you don't have to pay ANY money and I think I will NEVER get rid of this app. If you like birdwatching this is the game for you!

Want to rate at 5 stars. The Bird ID finder is sort of hard to use if you don’t know the name or if you can only hear the bird. I got a possible 10 out 180 and none of the first 10 recordings matched. I wasn’t planning on listening to all 180 recordings while on my walk. The Lists are also hard to use and you can’t edit the name of a list in the event you make a spelling error, unless I haven’t figured out how to do that. Of course I love birds, so I’ll keep using it, though I think the app still needs some work.

Used to be excellent. What’s going on?. I love to use this app when I am traveling and see a new bird. It used to be so easy to look up by location, month, color, type of bird. Now I have an interface that smashes words and only seems clear when asking for a donation. I don’t know much about birds. I’m having problems looking them up by name. I didn’t download the reference guide biI wasn’t sure I wanted it. Now I can’t find where to get it. Darn. I believe I paid for this app 4 years ago. Now they say it’s free but I have to give them my email to help them out if they need some research in my area. It’s a lot of change here for an app that no longer works on my Apple 6 phone. Ugh! Frustrated on vacation.

Quick & Easy, great for beginners!. Create an account easily, download the field guide to review when off grid... you’re all set! The filters for ID are amazing (size, shape, color, flight pattern, location, time of year, habitat) all really help narrow it down... then one may play calls and match that way - or via bird response to a cellular intruder!! I only wish my entries were all public data like EBird (which is very hard to use unless you know the ID already).

Indespensible. I’ve always loved listening to birds and observing them in the wild but I’ve never really found a reliable way to remember the different types. Enter this app. Now I’m almost always able to find the right species in just a few taps. The location and pictures gets me in the ballpark and then matching the bird calls brings it home. Apps like this help remind me just how amazing technology can be.

Needs improvement!. There is a lot about this app that I like, however, what I feel is the most important feature and the reason I downloaded it to begin with, is the feature I’m most frustrated with. The “Bird Identifier” is TERRIBLE! Even when I enter all the required info, the results do not yield the bird I’m seeking. Obviously, if I’m trying to identify a bird it’s because idk what it is but at the time I’m using this feature I’m observing the bird in question and none of the search results look anything like the bird I’m observing! So frustrating! Not sure how this would be improved but it should be looked into.

Excellent source of Bird Info.... As a long term bird fan, this App has been super, especially in finding & recognizing a sighted bird by looks & call, and then so much more info available if wanted. We are super fans of the curious Carolina Wrens. By using an iPad & Bluetooth Speaker outside, we can really start a rumble & attract wrens by playing the different recordings of the Wrens... they come very close trying to figure out where those voices are coming.

Very frustrating to use. I liked this app before but never kept a bird list. After a trip over weekend I decided to start and opened this app - what happened? First, I had to create an account just to open an app I have had for years. The graphics look amateurish and words overlap each other so it is hard to read (iPhone 6). It saved a random location for a sighting and now puts all my sightings under that location yet does not allow me to create a new location, just keeps defaulting back to the original one. So it is really frustrating that I can’t save a sighting without a location. I will give it a chance after a few more updates/fixes, but will delete if doesn’t get better.

Enjoying new app!. I’m very much an amateur birdwatcher, but love my feathered neighbors immensely. This app makes it easy to use beautiful photos & listen to vocalizations to help identify birds, record sightings, learn more basic & interesting information about them. Customer service great when contacted them about issue with PREVIOUS version. Now on Day 4 of NEW version use & no problem registering an account, logging in, entering & editing data, interface. Been great!

Update (additional suggestion). I am not loving the new update… This is always been one of my favorite apps, and now it has lost a lot of the user-friendly features that made it so. These upgrades are more like downgrades… Go back to the prior version, pretty please! Note: it would be very helpful when you are on the”Sightings” tab (where you can see what birds have been identified locally) if when you click on a particular bird in the list you could link out to that bird’s “Description” tab, instead of having to back out of the recent sightings, and searching for a bird through the search box. Thank you so much!

Fantastic app!. This app has great photos and bird song recordings to help identify birds both seen and unseen. I love the crowd-sourced sightings and have begun adding some of my own. We’ve identified at least 20 species visiting our bird feeders and many more on trail walks — from ruby-throated hummingbirds to red-tailed hawks and bald eagles. It’s helped me to become a more perceptive and enthusiastic bird watcher. One thing I’d like to see added is a way to filter bird sightings by location or geographic range.

dmc49. I have other bird apps but I am really liking this Audubon Guide. So Quick and easy and the Photos are beautiful. They Display pictures of the birds in their habitat and flying, it just gives you a whole other perspective. I’ve only had this app for a week so I’m going to run it through the ringer maybe write some more comments later. I can already see that there was a whole Lotta creative thinking that went into creating this app. Good job!!!

Fun to share with the birding community. I love the app, it’s very thorough and informative. I wish it was easier to reply directly to people who comment on my sightings, because it would create more of a dialog and sharing community than just one-way comments. Something akin to the comment abilities on Instagram would be great. Some of the functionality is a little unintuitive, but overall it is still an excellent app, probably the best out there for bird ID. Plus, of course, I love the work that Audubon does!

Update made it non functional at times. This app was fine and just what I needed until one day I went to update it, not that it had ever given me a problem. Ever since updating it, randomly I will look up a bird only to find the photos aren’t there and the sound files won’t play. Very disappointing. Now I’ve basically switched to Merlín. But I’d love to still have access because it has different info than Merlín, such as habitat, nesting and egg info. But this problem won’t go away no matter how many times I’ve deleted and reinstalled the app.

What happened to this great app?. It seems like the app has been overhauled to appeal to inexperienced birders. I’ve been using it for many years as my go-to app for identifying birds in the field. But now I have several more clicks just to get to the bird list, and what the heck happened to the list: now it shows all birds East and west with no way to filter the list and save the filter for every time I use the app. Also I don’t find any FAQ link nor user instructions for the updates. I can’t handle it. I’ve struggled with the updated app for a while now and I’m out. I’m so disappointed with Audubon. ☹️

iPhone XR. Great app. Previous version I had a problem with the calls— the play button was so close to the edge of the screen it was hard to get a tap to register. That problem fixed, another rears its head: on my XR, with a little notch in the top center of the screen (for lenses) the search bar is right up in that space. And that’s the feature I use the most. Very hard to open a search, make an entry, and close it. Please drop it down a few pixels.

Didn’t load but now works. Can’t even open app to identify a bird but since that time I deleted the app and reinstalled it. Now it works perfectly fine without any problems at all. I have updated the review from one star to five stars but there is always room for improvement. Just keep making it better and better.

Best birding app. Great app! The best there is. I consult it almost daily. There are several things that could be improved, though. It would be nice if it would sort your life list in the order they were seen. And I also wish I could sign in with my ebird account and have my ebird life list migrated. Lastly, it should be able to identify a bird call, such as when the bird stays out of your sight and you have no idea how it looks

Great; but not so great.. For sure, this app is worth having, but it is equally frustrating. I enter all the items to identify any bird, even a crow, and it finds zero results. I enter my sighting with a photo, and it gives me no information or means by which to size the photo to suit this app. So, I get a photo showing about one fifth of a bird. However, the info on a bird, once I find it, is excellent. One useful feature to add would be that a description includes a short list like, “Often Confused With ...” or “Similar To ...” or “See also ...”

Loving Audubon n birds!!. A lifelong bird lover, I’m new to bird identification. The app has been incredibly helpful to ID birds by what state I am in, and the audio helps to verify when I’ve done it correctly. I’ve read other reviews and cannot speak to the app changes but for the creators let me say simpler is better! Showing birds perching and especially their undermarkings when flying is extremely valuable since that’s how I usually observe them. Thanks!!

G8TKeaper. Audubon . . . Thank You for making this Application available Again! I have purchased this Application, as well as A L L your other Apps, The Composite - Bird, Tree, Mammal, Butterfly, the App Butterfly, the App Trees, the App Fish, the App Caribbean Fish, the App Mushrooms, the App Birds & Butterflies, the App Butterflies, E T C. At I might add considerable cost, I have tried to support Audubon when I could on a a regiment income. They W E R E Fine products NOW THEY Are A L L Gone except for this one . . . Just a minor Question, Why is it Apple changes its OS, The the Apps You P U R C H A S E D NO. LONGER WORK? So Y O U H A V E TO PURCHASE N E W O N E z ????

Don’t waste your time. Unfortunately, this app no longer functions properly. It locked me out of my account and attempts at recovering a password were ignored. Also, this app constantly shows my location as NY no matter what I do. Finally, one of the features I loved was area sightings and lists. It shows observations posted a day ago of summer birds and it is obviously winter. Not only that, when I click to find where year round bird sightings were noted, it says no sightings in your area last 30 days. I have deleted and reinstalled all to no avail. Originally paid for this app and strongly consider deleting it permanently. I’m using iPhone 8 with iOS 11.

Lost a star for overlooking female identification. I would give this app five stars except for one thing...when keying out a bird, it doesn’t take the female of the species into account. Sadly, this means may times you can’t identify unless there is also a male present and visible. Example- Robin sized, black and white stripes on the head, brown back, speckled white chest...gave me sparrows and thrushes aplenty, but did not correctly identify a female Rose Breasted Grosbeak. Otherwise, I really enjoy the app and find it to be accurate, as long as I’m identifying a male.

New Bird enthusiast. This app is AWESOME! The identification interface is really well thought out. I just found a Lazuli Bunting, and I’ve never even heard of that bird. (It was a beautiful blue). I sorted by color and there it was. Other birds I’ve had to do more sleuthing. Flight style, wing shape, and sounds. It’s really cool to figure out what I’m looking at, and I don’t know anything about birds. Thanks guys, I love the new information this app has opened up to me

Awesome App for Identifying Birds in Your Yard. Whenever I see an unfamiliar bird, the first thing I do is open the Audubon Bird ID app to figure out what I’m looking at. With my new birding and photography hobbies I have gotten lots of help documenting the pictures I’ve taken. This app has been indispensable not just in my own back yard, but when hiking and traveling as well. The only thing I’d like to see added would be the ability to ID a bird from my phone camera roll - then it would be five stars.

Still not fixed for ipad users!. This used to be a great app for both iPad and iPhone. The newest version is terrible on the iPad. Although the update for today April 3, 2018 says that it was going to fix the viewing problems of bird photos in the field guide, it has not. Images still are off-center and most birds are unable to be seen in the field guide thumbnail images. I’m also not happy with the “sky is falling“ mentality of the stories that are presented here about the Migratory Bird Treaty Act either. I’m also not happy with the increased amount of money begging that’s built into this new version of the app. You folks have a great tool here for learning and teaching about birds. Let’s not get political! Thank you.

Can’t use field guide without creating account. I purchased this app as a four field guide collection (birds, flowers, trees, mammals). Audubon discontinued that app and replaced it with one that is for birds only. This takes away a focused field guide and adds social media functions and lobbying for donations, but at least the bird field guide was useful. But now the recent updates lock you out of the field guide without setting up an account. So now I purchased an app that has gone from four wonderful field guides to a single field guide that no longer works as a field guide and instead asks me to donate money... you can guess how motivated I am to donate money now.

Promising, but buggy. I’m really enjoying the feature set in the latest version of this app, but I keep encountering really annoying bugs. For example, I’ve somehow got duplicates of the same sighting on my sightings list for one bird, but am unable to delete the duplicate entry--I keep getting a message that I need to connect the Internet, even though my phone is on LTE. Another example: It’s nice to have a recent sightings list, but it’s not helpful when you can’t scroll it! There’s also a “connect to the internet” message overlaying and obfuscating the list entries that I can see. Finally, what’s the point of having a recent sightings list if you can’t tap an entry and bring up a map showing siding location? Hopefully, all these issues will be fixed in the next version, but in the meantime it makes for an awfully frustrating user experience.

Problem with otherwise good app. I hope the developers read these reviews so they can address issues that affect the usefulness of this app. I would have given it five stars if all the features worked with iOS 11.0.3 on the iPhone 7. As it is, neither my husband nor I get any sound when we press “voice” while using the app on our phones. However, it does work on my iPad with the same iOS. Please fix this! New issue with 11.2 update. Pictures have vanished as have range maps. Please fix!

Doesn't work without signing in. The latest upgrade Is useless to me. There is no way to use this app anymore without creating an account or going through Facebook. This app used to work independently of creating an account. Would like a refund for a decent app that is no longer if any value to me. Also will not work without access to WiFi or cellular data which is terrible for birding in remote areas. Developer response does not address requirement to create an account or use Facebook. After an app has been purchased, it is unethical, IMHO, to change the usage requirements without offering the ability to reload previous version.

Mostly great but problem with “Explore”. Use this app frequently but recently I have been having a problem with the “Explore” feature. The page states that I have no internet connection even when I do (and can confirm by going to a specific bird’s sightings and see the latest data there) and even though I have location services set to on. It’s pretty annoying since that was an important feature before they broke it.

Why?. First of all I do appreciate that Audubon Society makes a bird ID app available for free. Thank you! Having said that, why, if something isn’t broken, do you want to fix it? I woke up one morning recently with the new version installed on my phone and discovered once I got logged in (with difficulty!) that it was a very different app with a different look and different features. (there is a steep learning curve with this new one that I have yet to master). Primarily, I want the app to interface with eBird so I can locate birds but maps, hotspots, and locations no longer work like they used to, which is very frustrating! To existing users: If you haven’t downloaded the new version yet, and you can avoid doing so until you can see how different this one is, I would encourage you to do so. TO THE DEVELOPERS: Can you make the old version available for download? Many of us, I’m sure, would appreciate it.

Friendly to beginners. Useful “identify a bird” feature helps you make a positive ID while also teaching you what to look for in the future. Audio clips of bird calls, a variety of pictures, and concise descriptions. Easy to map sightings at different locations. Keeps a “life list” and you can even look back to what you saw in previous years. Make sure to set your default location to save time and find the birds nearest you.

Enjoy the app for identifying birds and tracking sightings. The app is nice design & allows you to narrow down the possible bird you saw by a number of different categories such as color, bird type, wing and tail shape, habitat, call and activity. I’m just dabbling in bird watching & use the app to identify birds and keep track of sightings. With that being said, I removed one start because I sometimes will need to check Google images to confirm my sightings since some species don’t have as many pictures.

Hate the latest update!!. I really liked the old Audubon Birds and Butterflies app. And when that was no longer supported by my iPhone I downloaded the new Audubon Birds app. Previously I preferred Audubon over any other birding apps for the ease of finding birds that might be in the area or were sighted in an area recently. This new app was not as good as the old Birds and Butterflies app but still decent. But with the recent update, I now hate it! It kicks me out repeatedly when trying to look at bird descriptions. You can’t alphabetize by last name. And much more. While descriptions are still good, if most if time I can’t even get to them, it’s pretty worthless. I think I will be looking at other birding apps. 😡

The best backyard pleasure during the pandemic. Sitting underneath my deck umbrella calling to multiple species of birds using this application has become one of my greatest pleasures. I’ve counted over a dozen different kinds of birds at our bird feeder and their gymnastic aerial ballets offer hours of delight. This application is a brilliant way to learn more about birds wherever you are. I never hike without my phone so that I can use this application along the hike. Thank you, Audubon, for this wonderful tool.
