Classic Sudoku! Game Description & Overview

What is classic sudoku! app? ***** NOVEMBER UPDATE *****
10 new puzzles, all 100 puzzles are out now!

-------------------------------------

Presented by Cracking The Cryptic, YouTube's most popular Sudoku channel, this is the brand new “Classic Sudoku” game that their viewers have been requesting for the last two years!

Simon Anthony and Mark Goodliffe, the hosts of Cracking The Cryptic, have assembled a most extraordinary collection of sudoku puzzles. The sudokus in the game cover a wide range of difficulty with something for everyone - and also require an incredible range of techniques to solve them efficiently! Each of these special puzzles had to qualify for inclusion in the game by passing our rigorous play-testing - a test that NO other sudoku game on the market would pass. This play-testing ensures that a human being has actually thought about the journey you, the solver, will go on as you work through the puzzle. No computer testing here!

Indeed our more advanced puzzles have been carefully designed to showcase some of the diabolical techniques in an intuitive way with the aim of helping solvers UNDERSTAND the patterns involved.

In Cracking The Cryptic’s games, players start with zero stars and earn stars by solving puzzles. The more puzzles you solve, the more stars you earn and the more puzzles you get to play. Only the most dedicated (and cleverest) sudoku players will finish all the puzzles!

Featured authors include (obviously) Simon and Mark but also some other authors who have produced popular puzzles on the channel!

Mark and Simon have both represented the UK many times in the World Sudoku Championship and you can find more of their puzzles (and lots of others) on the internet’s biggest sudoku channel, Cracking The Cryptic.

Features:
100 beautiful puzzles
Many themes to choose from
Hints written by Mark and Simon!

Save your money. Some of the puzzles have incorrect hints associated with them. They are all ultra-hard and sometimes you can spend hours and hours looking for a solution that just isn’t there and only can you make progress by guessing. The functionality is absolutely fantastic, but due to incorrect hints and getting stuck on puzzles with no chance of making progress without guessing I can only give one star. I cannot justify $5 for this app. This would be better if all of the sudoku apps by cracking the cryptic were combined into one. Then I could justify $5. Maybe if they updated it and added more puzzles then I could also justify the $5. It’s just a waste and I’m sorry I blew $5 on this. I will add it seems only the cracking the cryptic puzzles seem to be flawed, the other writers puzzles are fun and solvable.

Don’t bother with the hints. The game itself is great; a very nice setup for everything. And the landscape orientation in the latest update is great. However, the difficulty of the puzzles skyrockets after just a couple puzzles. And the “hints” they give you RARELY do any good. Either it’s something blatantly obvious that you already have, or it’s incredibly vague like “the options in row 6 should help.” (An actual “hint” I got). If you’re not already an expert at soduko, this might be a very frustrating app that leads you to just guessing, which defeats the purpose of the game.

I only wish I could enter a grid so I can play all my sudoku games here. Everything is perfect (though the hint system could use a little polish - indicating the suggestions on the board would be much better than the text-only hints). Humble feature request: let me enter my own grid so I don’t have to play sudoku with any other interface ever again. Audacious feature request: let me import a photo of a grid so I don’t have to enter it myself.

Great App, iPad Opportunities. Fantastic sudoku app! I love it so much, but would love to get a copule of improvements for the ipad version if at all possible. Horizontal layout and keyboard shortcuts! Especially now that the magic keyboard is out, it’d be great to be able to do all the keyboard shortcut goodness that I see on the Cracking the Cryptic videos! No complaints, love the app, just couple things that might make it even better. Thanks so much!

Mostly Good. The app itself is very functional and the puzzles are interesting. The problem with this app is that some of the puzzles are unsolvable and the hints that are included with those puzzles are incorrect. They seem like they might refer to other puzzles or simply don’t take the actual board state into account. If this problem was fixed, the app would rate a 5.

Awesome. This is by far the best sudoku app just finished all the levels and loved it. The puzzles where well crafted and the hints where great when I got stuck. Getting another one of your apps now. Thanks guys!!

Awesome App. This is a great sudoku app. The puzzles are tough but I get through them and am getting better! Now that I’m used to using double notation to keep track of things like Simon and Mark do on Cracking The Cryptic it’s hard to use any other app. If you could please adjust the hint boxes so they don’t cover the sudoku grid on the iPad the app would be even better! Perhaps you could make a variety sudoku app next featuring a mix of different puzzles like the channel does. This would be awesome. Thanks again for a great app! Well worth the money!!

More Puzzles Please!!!. This is my favorite sudoku app of all time. I hate playing this game in others, it’s just not the same! I’ve been playing the same 100 puzzles for a few years now and am ready for more!!

Great game. Great game. I love the hand made puzzles; and simultaneously hate how hard they’re getting, lol. It could use some UI updates though. There’s a lot of dead space at the top. I would suggest moving the grid as far up as possible. That would give enough room for the numbers to become two rows as opposed to one. A lot of my errors come from accidentally taping the wrong number because the buttons are so small. Also with moving everything up, it move the number from the edge of the screen. I often come back to the game with an error of 5 because of swiping up to exit the app. It just tends to put a 5 in sometimes when leaving the game. Speaking of the number buttons, it would be nice if the buttons dimmed momentarily when pressed; just a visually feedback to know you pushed the button. A feature I’d like would be if there is only one note left in the cell, double tapping that cell would fill it in with the number of that note. I don’t know how much of this is possible, because I assume the other versions of Sudoku you guys make are built off the same base UI.

👍🏻. Awesome puzzles and great intuitive sudoku software. Different levels of sudoku for all players. Only criticism I have is there’s only 3 colors to highlight boxes per skin theme. No option to make your own sudoku or input a custom sudoku.

Best Sudoku app on the store!. I have tried nearly every app on the App Store trying to find one that flows perfectly and this one certainly does. The puzzles are fantastic and allow you to really learn as you climb the difficulties. I have nothing but positives to say. $5 well spent!

Almost perfect, iPad support lacking. I really like this sudoku app, it has the most effective interface and the dual notation options are wonderful. My only gripe is that there is no support for the iPad physical keyboard, which is how I do my sudokus. It would be wonderful to be able to type the number and use the arrow keys to navigate with shortcuts for different notation styles. The only other function I want would be to be able to set my own classic puzzles and then to solve them.

Add sound effects and maybe music. I have all of your 5 sudoku apps and they all are missing a little bit of spice. I think a soft slow soundtrack would help with the game. Also adding sound effects when hitting buttons helps the player confirm they have pressed the correct thing. I know I’ve tapped some of the numbers and had to check if it registered because there isn’t a sound effect for it.

Great puzzles, but coloring of squares really confusing. I love this curated list of puzzles, but the UI for coloring of squares is extremely confusing (or buggy). I am able to solve complicated sudoku puzzles, but I really struggle with how to, for example, mark these three squares in yellow, and these other four in blue. Everything else in this UI is relatively intuitive, but not the coloring of squares. Just the UI for picking a color is weird. I should be able to tap on the three colored circles on the left to change color, but nine times out of ten, it doesn’t change color. (And it has white outline around two colors ... what does that mean?!?) And even when I have a color selected, for the life of me I can’t consistently say “ok, make these three squares yellow.” Other than that, the game is great, but this feature makes it super annoying, should one want to color squares...

Bad hints. The annotation features are top notch, but the hints are difficult to process and—at least for level 16—wrong. It says a pair in one row constricts an unrelated value in a different row. Having solved it now, I understand why the hint made no sense, that’s not where the 9 goes. It would be nice not to have the hint block the puzzle and to be more graphical, not textual (maybe then they would have caught the error in hint 1). The text in general in the app is HUGE.

Absolutely outstanding!. I love this app! Each puzzle is great in its own right and the options available to solve the puzzles are better or on par with anything else I have found. If there was one thing I would add to a wish list is the capacity to review the puzzle after I’m finished. As in the timer stops and I can go back on the history of actions to see what my process was. Specially to compare against the hints if I didn’t use them to see if I used what was hinted or if I came up with something else. But that is minor compared to everything else that this app gets right. If you love Sudoku definitely get this app!

Very buggy on iOS. Ok on iPadOS. Too many bugs. Unsolvable puzzles where the only number missing in a box doesn’t fit. I’ve run into this on multiple puzzles but didn’t have the same issue on the iPad. Just iPhone. Also on iPhone the numbers don’t gray out once you’ve filled in every grid with that number. Again this works on iPad. Not sure why it doesn’t come across on iPhone.

Great puzzles. I love the puzzles in here, but wish it had the option for corner and center pencil marks. Have been typing into Sven’s SudokuPad told solve then typing solutions back in here

The best!. This is the only sudoku app I have found that allows for two different types of pencil marks to distinguish between notes for the block and notes for a single cell. The puzzles are also beautifully crafted and the hints are helpful if you get stuck. The only request I have is to add a camera scan feature that would allow the app to be used with any puzzle from an outside source.

Highly recommend. I am by no means a very experienced and/or necessarily good solver, but I am still very much able to enjoy this app. Almost all of the puzzles (that ive gotten to so far) have some sort of symmetry and are quite fun to solve. Currently, I am stuck on level 24, and have just gone ahead and done 25, 26, and 27. Im having a blast: definitely worth the $5 to me!

Great app - Some frustrations!. This is the best sudoku app on the store. Biggest issue: the hints are very cryptic, and they cover the board! I look at the hint, then have to close it to see the board, then I forget what it said! I have to write down the hint on paper, or take a picture of it. Please change this so you can see the hint while working on the board! Also, could you make a set of easier puzzles for the beginners?

Best Sudoku App. I have used about a dozen different classic sudoku apps, and this one blows them all away for three reasons: 1. The solving and notation tools included are better and more plentiful than any other app I’ve used. Multi-select, multi notation methods, etc. all decrease friction and allow me to focus on solving the puzzle. 2. The puzzles! These puzzles are more interesting and challenging than computer-generated puzzles from other apps. 3. I was never asked to enable notifications. The app never tries to run in the background. There aren’t any ads. I paid $5 for a high quality sudoku app, and that’s exactly what I got. I only have one feature request. I started using this app on my iPhone, but often prefer to solve puzzles on the iPad because of the bigger screen. I would really like the puzzles I’ve completed to be synced to the iPad as well.

Help with settings. Have been playing Sudoku on another app but just tried this one and trying to adjust to new settings, etc. I’m unable to find a guide that explain what each setting does, which would be helpful! Looking forward to learning them one way or another and playing some HUMAN-generated puzzles.

Challenging Sudoku. I can typically complete the hardest levels of most sudoku apps in under 20 min. This app offers sudokus that require a lot more brain power to complete which I absolutely love!! Even the less difficult puzzles on this app (around three star difficulty) I would consider more difficult than what other apps claim to be the most difficult levels. This app is absolutely worth the money and will keep my brain entertained for a long long time.

Some hints wrong. I have to admit I am addicted, but on puzzle 21 now and it seems like the final phase always comes down to filling in as many pencil marks as possible to find the hidden triples. I have been turning to the hints for some additional ideas, but not much more do far. And some of the hints are wrong. They should be corrected in future updates. For example, in puzzle 20 I believe both hints 5 and 6 are wrong.

Best interface but needs more puzzles. This is by far the best interface available. Dual notation, multi-select cells, and the ability to color cells are spectacular features not found elsewhere. The major shortcoming with the app is the lack of puzzles. While I appreciate the time being put into hand selecting the puzzles provided and suppling valuable hints, as someone who likes to solve multiple puzzles a day, I find myself turning to another app for randomly generated puzzles. Adding the option to play randomly generated puzzles while still using this interface for notation would make this the only sudoku worth having.

Great app, but the hints aren’t great. Honestly the puzzles are great and a ton of fun to solve, but the puzzles are hard so a beginner like me needs a few hints. Some hints are great and help you progress the puzzle or show you a technique to advance your skill, but others tell you things you’ve already done or things that help narrow down options but don't actually progress the puzzle. In one or two cases Ive seen the hints just be completely incorrect as well.

Great for an average solver. The hints attached to each puzzle help you learn the various solving techniques. I first went through the 100 puzzles using the hints on the harder ones. Then I solved them again without using the hints. I think I am a much better solver now.

Lacks polish. The app lacks a lot of polish, I would not recommend it. Hints, which are meant to teach you more, use shorthand which is not explained anywhere. They don’t even just highlight on the board, instead they cover it up so you have to remember what it says OR keep flipping between the board and the hint. And often times the hint assumes you were able to get to a certain point in the puzzle, so it might not even help. Other apps can give you a hint based on the current position in the solution where you are at. The text for instructions is too large and does not respect the default text size on the phone and the scrolling is wrong (does not behave like other windows on the phone). There is no pause button if you need to step away for a few minutes, you have to exit the puzzle. The numbers to select are smaller tap areas and feel like they are an after thought in the design. There are multiple ways to mark the puzzle and the description for how to use them talks as if you know a lot about Sudoku. Overall, does not feel like an app built for iOS and definitely not for beginners.

Fantastic. This is the best sudoku app I’ve found. I consider myself an intermediate solver, often stumped by the harder sudoku puzzles. I love that the difficulty of each puzzle builds nicely off the previous ones, slowly incorporating more advanced logic techniques. For example, I am about a third of the way through the puzzles and was just stumped; however, I was able to use the “hint” button to explain to me the y-wing logic needed to complete the puzzle. Hopefully, I won’t miss the next one! I love that the app is challenging and helping me to improve. The user interface is well done. I highly recommend this app.

An excellent sudoku app. All the puzzles on the app are designed by “hand”, not computer generated. It makes for much more interesting. The puzzles become more difficult as you go. A great resource for improving your sudoku skill set.

Fantastic, but missing one feature: Landscape Orientation. Since I am a tablet user, it is much easier to use landscape than it is portrait. Please add this feature! Everything else is marvelous!

Manual Puzzle Entry. The app is great!! The double notation pencil marking feature makes solving so much more efficient!! I have one other sudoku app I use, which has a manual puzzle entry feature, but it does not have the double notation pencil marking feature. If the Classic Sudoku app by Cracking the Cryptic added a manual puzzle entry feature to allow the user to also solve newspaper, magazine, book puzzles, etc using their app, then it would be the only sudoku app a user would ever need.

Best Sudoku puzzler. This app has EVERYTHING we need to hunker down and solve any puzzle. I only have a small list of requests to help flesh out the overall experience. 1. Apple Pencil notes around the border of puzzles 2. iPad Multitask mode to run with multiple apps. 3. Favorites list in menu for puzzles I want to try again.

Great puzzles - clunky app. The puzzles are really challenging, and am glad to support the Cracking the Cryptic team. The app though seems to be written 5 years ago and could use some modernizations and improvements. For instance, if I take a break and come back later, it doesn’t automatically go to the game I was playing. Also the settings and buttons could use some explanations or clarifications.

Fun Way to Learn Sudoku. This is a great collection of puzzles and the hint feature introduced several new techniques for beginners like me! Made it through all the puzzles once with lots of hint use, now going back to try again with fewer hints :)

Great app. Loved this app. Puzzle 65 is staggeringly beautifully difficult but so satisfying as it eventually unfolds making you fight for every digit. I would also love to be able to use this interface to play other sudukos. I don’t nee the app to solve the puzzle or offer hints, but to let me use the notation. Also I thought I was supposed to get 3 new puzzles each month, but that only happened the first month?

Note to the dev: 40 and 65 are the same puzzle. It’s a great app sudokus. I can’t really complain about it; it’s fairly easy to use and the puzzles are fun/challenging. Except for 40 and 65; it’s the same puzzle but it makes me feel real dumb.

The best, truly. I had felt like I went through all the other sudoku game apps I could find and they were all too, well, predictable. Then I found this app and I'm almost sad now that I've completed all the puzzles. It's by far the best sudoku app I've ever played. Much more of a challenge without being overwhelming, and the puzzles are truly gorgeous. Highly recommended, 11/10!

Good puzzles but too many locked puzzles. Enjoyable puzzles so far — I especially liked the initial hint after the first game, and hoped there might be more after each game, but not yet. I am disappointed that, with a paid game, I must (I assume) work my way through the easier puzzles to get to the “locked” ones. I would rather attempt some of the more challenging ones. I don’t want to play a game that feels like busywork! Oh, I forgot to say that the notation features are terrific — fairly intuitive (except perhaps for how to “get out” of the multiple selection tool) — and clearly made by puzzle-solvers. Other popular apps don’t have nearly so many tools that allow you to use your own notation style.

I’m obsessed. I’ve been getting better and better after doing most of the puzzles multiple times and watching tutorials. One problem I encounter is that when I finish a puzzle, it doesn’t remind me which one I just completed. It just says congrats and pops me out to the home page. It wouldn’t be hard to keep the number of the puzzle available while playing and after completing..”Congrats for completing puzzle 35! You got your fastest time yet!”

Lacking only good iOS keyboard support. A lovely app, but proper keyboard support would make it 5-stars. Needs the features of the CTC web app. * Proper arrow key navigation (right now, it stops moving if you hit the arrows too quickly) * Shift and Ctl to change entry modes keep up the great work, looking forward to more puzzles in this set of apps.

Unbelievable!. I’ve just recently gotten into sudoku, and have been playing around with a few others from the App Store. This app is entirely worth the $5 for it. It’s intuitive, easy to navigate, is entirely customizable, and the best part: from what I know each of these puzzles is handmade with huge amounts of attention to detail, unlike the other apps that seem to generate them randomly? Idk it’s what the other guy said. I’ve legitimately only played the first puzzle and I’m in love

Terrible controls!. The controls are terrible. It took me the better part of 5 minutes to even get it to let me enter a firm number, not a pencil mark. Even after re-reading the instructions, I can only reliably get it to take entries if I don’t switch between options. Also after any touch of the color choice highlight tool, it simply will not let me enter anything into the boxes unless I go back to the highlight tool and toggle it around to regain any ability to continue the puzzle. I’m not sure how the 5 star reviews got here as I can’t even reliably get numbers entered into the grid.

Great fun!. Honestly it’s a great app and I don’t have any complaints. I would like to see a blank board option so I can use the app when solving puzzles I find in the news paper.

Serious quality issues. Given the level Cracking the Cryptic operates, I would expect a higher degree of care put on the puzzles and hints on how to solve. Puzzle #60 is not unique. Reading other puzzles are also not unique. As mentioned by others, many of the hints are incorrect as well. The app is great. The puzzles are what we’re here for, however.

Landscape?. This has easily become my favorite sudoku app. My only request is you provide support for landscape mode, especially on the iPad. Keep up the great work!

UPDATE: Love this app even more. Updated review: I have completed level 26 with 98 stars and I'm even more impressed with this app. The puzzles are all beautifully designed and some are absolutely exquisite. I am learning so much and can see that these will have replay value. I do have one request: I have fat fingers and sometimes accidentally touch a known value next to the cell I intended to choose. It would be great if known cells could be locked once the values has been inserted. Kudos to the team who created this app! Initial review: I’ve been watching Simon’s videos for about a month and was so excited to hear this app was coming. I still have to remember to use the back arrow when I’ve made a mistake so I don’t erase my previous pencil marks, but other than that this app is all I hoped for and more. I’ve completed only five of the puzzles so far and I already feel I’ve learned so much. Thank you for this fun and challenging game and learning tool!

The Best Sudoku App on the App Store. Period.. Simon and Mark have done it again, and this time have brought even more to the party than with their sandwich sudoku app (which still receives excellent updates each and every month as promised). The dual notes capability (which can be turned on in the options) gives a comprehensive capability to pencil marks and notation that far surpass any other app. Each of the 5 early puzzles I've completed have all felt unique and challenging, without being absolute gimmes. The guest puzzles from the master of Thomas Snyder are beautifully designed and very enjoyable to solve as well. Unlike other sudoku apps that generate random puzzles with an algorithm, these puzzles are clearly handcrafted with care, each giving a certain amount of designed logic that cannot be found with computer made sudoku. For those who love handcrafted puzzles from Nikoli or GMPuzzles, this is the app for you. While no advanced logic has been required as of yet, I fully expect the difficulty to ramp up significantly as they have done in the sandwich app, and I can't wait to see those puzzles!

Great app(s)!. These puzzles are great! I love that they have put time into a variety of features to help you play the way you want, wit highlighter functions and center or corner notations. It’s great! Their other games are fantastic as well! If I might make a small suggestion to make it (IMO) better? If possible, Let there be an option to auto deselect the cell when you put a definitive number in there. Not with pencil marks, but a solution number. There have been several times I’ve tried to swap number focuses and not realized I still have a cell selected from having put in a 5 or something.

Challenging sudoku puzzles. I’m very impressed with this collection of sudoku puzzles. I’m a novice solver using the techniques I have learned by watching the setters’ equally excellent YouTube channel. The puzzles seem to get more difficult as you progress. Even just ten puzzles in I am finding my brain being challenged. Happily these crafted sudoku are far more satisfying to complete than my other sudoku app which uses computer generated puzzles. Clean interface with a thoughtful hint system.

Hot phone. Great puzzles Not bad interface Destroys battery

Challenging & beautiful puzzles, well worth it!. For fans of the Cracking the Cryptic YouTube channel, you'll find yourself commentating every solve in the accent of Mark or Simon with exclamations of "stunning", "beautiful" and/or "marvellous". If only the app opened with the 3 second classical music jingle to match the YouTube video branding ;) Some teething issues with some of the settings/options and the playing board could be a little bigger. The timer should also be paused whenever a pop up is active. If a video walk-through is available for any of the puzzles, it might be nice to be able to watch the "official" solve after the level has been completed/unlocked to pick up the hidden tricks or methods potentially missed.

Love your apps, real challenge 😀. Love the Sudoku range and watching their YouTube, however with your apps please explain in the how to play, how you obtain stars, is it based on time or errors you make or both ?

Great app once I found the right Control Method. It took me forever to find out that I wanted the Tool Control Method. I find the gameplay options confusing and some more explanation of some of the options would be helpful. I was about to rate 4 stars with a control method issue but when double checking the confusing options before posting my review I realised that this addressed my problem. The battery drain isn’t an issue with lockdown because I’m always at home, but I can imagine it being an issue out and about. The hint system is fantastic but sometimes I am still stuck. I feel like this app is great for hands on learning with the puzzle design, it would be fantastic if there was a link to somewhere where people could discuss each puzzle and issues they find and how to deal with that specific puzzles challenges - even if it is all user generated content. This app is really cool with how each puzzle is designed by a setter with a specific theme in mind, and it would be great to be able to discuss that with other people who play it. Also I’m not sure if this is the kind of thing you’re going for with your app, I would like to know your thoughts on a button to auto complete pencil marks.

Stupendous!. I've always enjoyed sudoku, but never really appreciated it until I stumbled upon cracking the cryptic. Now I have a new love for sudoku puzzles and love solving them in my spare time. I find myself saying alot of classic Simon quotes along the way. This is the best classic sudoku app and definitely worth it, highly recommend!

Best Sudoku app by far. The puzzles in this app are NOT machine generated — that means no guessing or “Bowman’s Bingo” to solve. When (if) you get stuck, there are hints that actually teach you about advanced solving techniques. The app has a finite number of puzzles, but with each update, new puzzles are added to the app. This is the most satisfied I’ve ever felt about buying an app that is just for fun.

The best sudoku app. This app is excellent. Love your YouTube channel. Looking forward to completing all these puzzles you have hand crafted, not like my other app where it is generated. Thanks !

Love the app but lots of freezing issues. Everything about this app is great. I dislike every other sudoku app now. One ongoing problem I wish could be updated is constant freezing. When ever my phone rings or an alarm goes off is I’m using the app it freezes. When I restart it usually deletes all progress on what ever puzzle I was currently working on. Super frustrating

Wishing there was more puzzles added. Love it, just wishing there was more puzzles added.

Challenging and masterful. I stumbled upon the app after finding the YouTube Channel. I am not great at Sudoku and find it highly challenging, but am also finding some real clarity in working on each given puzzle. Some take me over an hour to do some take me 12 minutes. Each puzzle fun to do, the hints and tips are useful - though I do sometimes find them confusing and it takes a me a moment to figure it out. Highly recommended!

Minor improvements would make it perfect. I love the YouTube channel and the app is great. I’m happy to pay the app fee to support the channel and get top quality puzzles with no ads. Thank you! Minor app changes would make it 5 star for me 1. Organize the puzzles in the index in order of difficulty. 2. Position the hint box to not hide the puzzle si I can see the hint and the puzzle at the same time 3. Let me check the hints I’ve handled so if I go back into hints, I don’t have to relocate where I left off. 4. Give me a link in the hint that takes me to one of your awesome videos that explains the technique used in that step. Especially useful as we move into the more advanced puzzles. Thanks guys, I look forward to working my way through all your apps!

Performance isn’t the best. This app is great and functionally is the best Sudoku app I have ever used but the stutter when scrolling (most noticeable) is hard on the eyes, smoothing this out would be awesome. Also a better landscape layout (similar to the web version you see on the YouTube channel) would be great.

Glitchy. Puzzle 9 has multiple working answers but will only complete if given the correct answer. This is the problem with handmade sudoku. Can provide photos as evidence

Great Sudoku app. , and the only one I know of that allows for both corner and middle at the same time. Same as The cracking the Cryptic YouTube.

Amazing Sudoku. This app has hands down the best interface I’ve used for sudoku. Each puzzle is brilliantly crafted and can be solved with logic without requiring guessing. The clues are crafted specifically for each puzzle to nudge you into the proper logic. There’s limited number of puzzles though so it’s best appreciated doing 1-2 a day.

Good puzzles, problematic function. I love watching the Cracking the Cryptic YouTube channel so I had high hopes for this app. However I have had nothing but trouble with it! First, the code to supposedly transfer the app data from one device to another does absolutely nothing. I started a puzzle on one device but can’t continue on my other device. Also on several puzzles, the hints were completely wrong. One hint said that R8c9 was a 1, but the puzzle already had a 2 in that square to begin with… Also sometimes the pencil markings don’t allow both the centre numbers and corner numbers, they just switch all the marks to one or the other. Overall, pretty disappointing.

Love it!. Great puzzles! I just wish that I could see the tips and the board at the same time. Keep up the great work.

Best sudoku app I’ve seen. Great interface, with lots of options/tools to cater to your preferences and/or help get through more difficult puzzles. Also, the hints aren’t just dropping a number into a square, but tell you about something you’ve missed. Really great.

Best sudoku app there is!. Best sudoku app out there, and I’ve tried quite a few. I love that the puzzles are set by real people and that they are elegant and vary in difficulty as well. I only wish there were more! :)

Beautiful. Best Sudoku app there is. I normally don’t pay for apps but this is worth it.

Brilliant. The sudoku interface is the cleanest and most useful of any sudoku app that I have seen, makes it hard to play sudoku any other way. The puzzles are also a delight and well crafted. I am eagerly awaiting more levels.

Amazing. Well built app that allows both center and corner notations. The puzzles are great, and as a beginner the option for hints allows me to learn new techniques.

It’s a sudoku app. I can’t say that it’s groundbreaking but I love the youtube content and this app was a way to support your channel. I would love to see a feature added where you can create a sudoku puzzle from an existing puzzle on another medium. I love watching your videos and trying to solve the puzzles first but often there is no link given to the same puzzle. This might also set apart your app from every other sudoku app in existence.

The best Sudoku game by far. I have played Sudoku on and off for years. I discovered this app through the teams YouTube channel. The app just keeps getting better as I learn how to use it. I don’t see me using any other app moving forward. I love this so much here are my recommendations to make it better. When showing a hint give the option to make the pop up screen somewhat transparent so I can see the screen and the hint at the same time. This is one of the pest parts about using it on my iPad. Link up my usage on the iPad and the iPhone so clearing a puzzle on one clears it on the other. To the people who run the YouTube channel and created / designed this app. You have brought me happiness and made me better. Thank you for all you do. I will buy anything you fine folks put out at this point. Be Well, PS my last two puzzles I did not use a hint. Maybe this old dog can learn a trick or two.

Best Sudoku app!. It has the best features to mark and understand a puzzle. Best features also to learn the techniques to solve complex puzzles. Their hard puzzles are also quite entertaining. Down side is that it has less than 200 unique puzzles.

best Sudoko App. Best Sudoku App on the Appstore with handcrafted puzzles. Would love to get added stats.

Amazing App!!!. I watched Cracking The Cryptic on YouTube for a few months before trying out the app. I love it by far the best sudoku app I’ve used on the App Store. One small request would be the ability to change the color of the text I put in the grid. Maybe you can do this and I don’t know how. Overall a fantastic app with great unique puzzles.

Meh.... If you’re looking for hand curated puzzles, this is probably the best collection I’ve seen yet. They are hands down the best set of sudoku puzzles I’ve seen in a game, and it is great if you are really looking to challenge yourself. The downside is, they’re bundled in a really rather mediocre app. It suffers from being a low-quality cross platform game (built on Unity) that puts in no real effort to be a good iOS app. The UI is not as polished as a number of other iOS Sudoku apps and suffers from a number of inconsistencies. The iPad app is even worse, as it is literally just a scaled up version of the iPhone app that doesn’t even support landscape mode. There is no way to sync progress between devices, if that’s important to you. The menus are inconsistent (sometimes you have to scroll to see more options, other times you have to use next/back buttons to change pages). It does have some rather unique options that are pretty nice (the ability to select & annotate multiple cells at once is very cool), but most of them are somewhat non-obvious in terms of how they’d be helpful and the app itself doesn’t really do a good job of explaining how (or why) you should. The Tips and Tricks section simply a wall of text explaining how to play sudoku (but lacking any information how, you know, how to use the app itself). I suspect that the game makes a lot of sense if you’re used to desktop/flash/web sudoku games, but there are better iPhone/iPad apps out there - many of them free - even if they are lacking the main draw of hand curated puzzles. I certainly don’t mind the $5 cost of it - the puzzles themselves are well worth it. It’s just frustrating that the app experience is so far behind other iOS sudoku games.

Love these guys. I cannot recommend all their apps enough

Great software. Very well made software with all the addons that you would want for sudoku (pencil markings, highlights, etc.) 5/5!

favorite sudoku app!. downloaded after watching several videos on their YouTube channel. if you’ve ever gone out to pick up sudoku books you should pick up this app. i greatly enjoy the 2 styles of notes and the ability to select multiple squares and add colors. the nudging hints that are also available, just great. i do wish there were a way to highlight puzzles, or favorite them so i can find back more easily certain ones.

No cute sounds. I was so disappointed when the app was entirely silent! I like the little tiny sounds when working on a digital sudoku. I hope they implement some soon!

Good games with fair hints (some erroneous), but not really step-by-step instructional. Hints. The games are well curated, well constructed, human-made games. They are, in general, arranged in increasing difficulty. But the hints are only 20% as instructional as the YouTube videos. The hints are extremely short declarations of what is the case, but don't instruct per se. "There is a 57 pair in r8c4,c6," but how do you see that? "2s are locked into c6, c8 in boxes 6 and 8," but that isn't obvious; how do you see that? Suggestions: 1. Make the hints like the commentary in the YT videos - show the steps leading up to the conclusion/declaration. 2. By numbering the hints and refering back to previous ones, you could show how to build up puzzle solving skills. "As with hint 005-1, r5c1,c6 must be a pair (here: 46). Now the remaining non-given numbers in r5c237 are 179." Etc.

Terrific!. Fabulous interface. Only app I could find with both corner and center pencil marks. If you haven’t, visit their YouTube channel. Thanks!!

My favorite sudoku app. I want more puzzles! But those are on the way with consistent updates. The puzzles are off the highest quality - beautifully crafted with unique tricks that will truly test your sudoku skills. If you need them, the hints will get you through. I love the interface. Maybe it’s because I obsessively watch their YouTube videos, so I understand why they have the setup that they choose here. It does what a good notation system should do well - track your Logic in a clear way that will let you focus on solving the next twist. The only thing I could possibly ask for is a landscape layout instead just the portrait mode. Very well done Simon and Mark!! Thank you!!

Great Sudoku app!. I l I've the functionality and play of this app... Great job guys!!

Horrible User Interface. Not like the UI from the YouTube channel at all. Can’t differentiate between given numbers and placed numbers since there’s no contrast (the places ones are charcoal grey vs givens are black). The button layout is annoying with the tiny numbers far from the board. I played a few games, but find it too annoying to keep using. sudokuexchange.com has the UI I was expecting.

Great app. I’m very very impressed with not just the challenge that this limited app has to offer. I say limited due to the number of levels available, but as a teaching tool to sudoku and how it ties into the YouTube channels it’s a home run of content and has helped me learn about techniques that I would have never had the interest to develop. I could go on and on about how the app and the videos have multiplied my interest in sudoku to levels I never imagined but that’s been said before in other reviews. Instead I’d like to just say that the pencil mark options used in this app are so far beyond anything other apps and webs sites have available it’s frankly embarrassing how poor other paid apps are at usability. I don’t say that to shame the other apps I say it because there are options here I truly wish were more widely available. My one wish and pipe dream for this app is for it to have a camera option or a ‘manual fill’ option so I could take a picture of the puzzles on the videos or manually enter them myself. I don’t even need it to be able to check the work at the end of these fantasy puzzles, though that would be nice.

Uniqueness. Puzzle #82 Lacks uniqueness with 2/8 pairs in columns 3 & 5 rows 4 and 8. I could have switched the 2s and 8s in those spots and the puzzle would have been solved. . . Using that concept I attempted to put a 3 in column 3 row 8 (I was down to only a few 2s, 3s and 8s left) and it was one of the digits (other than a 2 or 8) in that spot that was not restricted (which means accordingly it should have been the 3 so the puzzle had a unique solution), but it showed up red. The only way to figure out which was the 2 or 8 in those spots was to guess. Not sure if it was a glitch in my app or if it was the puzzle itself. Just FYI. Not sure else how to let you know other than a review. Love the app and your YouTube Channel videos! I am leaning so much.

Amateur Beware!. These puzzles are so hard if you are not already a sudoku expert then don’t bother getting this app

Great App with limited iPad support. Liked the channel on YouTube, so I bought the app. Love the app and puzzles thus far, but found support for the app on the iPad is limited. That plus a few other issues make it a four star app for me. The issues? * Biggest is no landscape support on iPad, now more of a problem with the new Magic Keyboard that places the tablet in landscape mode. * No account communication between devices. I downloaded the app on my phone and tablet, but the progress I made on the tablet isn’t reflected on the phone. On a second device I’d have to repeat every puzzle to get to new ones. * The puzzles are just listed from 1 to 65 (at the moment) with no standard accepted indication as to level of difficulty (hard, diabolical, etc.) * The initial puzzle is probably “hard”. This isn’t for beginners. * No generated puzzles, so you’re dependent on the developer to add more. * No “compute” button to get basic candidates. Handy when you’re near the end of a puzzle. * One last thing I miss that’s in other apps is the ability to double-tap a single pencil mark to enter that number into that square.

Best sudoku app ever!. Great app! The notation available fits the way Simon and Mark solve their puzzles. I can’t get enough of it!!!

Lots of fun and speedy controls. Good puzzles and an excellent interface combined. Very fun!

Cool but. Cool but I lost interest too quickly

UI improvements needed. 1) The 1-9 buttons are way too small 2) Can’t undo previous moves when resuming a saved game

My favorite. This is, hands down, my favorite Sudoku app. While the controls took a little getting used to, they work well when learned. I also love that there are multiple ways to pencil in the grid. If you watch their YouTube channel, you will feel right at home here!

Happy to support. I love watching you guys on YouTube, I’m happy to support the development just wish I could have gotten this app from Apple and given you the full $5 instead of only $3.50 because of Apple’s 30%...
