lukemichael7 - innovative concept, but hard to use
i read about shift keyboard on a cult of mac article and i was very interested to download it for my apple watch, because i don’t love speaking to text in public and writing out my texts is pretty tedious. it seemed like a great idea, and it is, but it’s just not easy enough to use. you have to scroll to access the last half of the alphabet - and then writing out my words because just an easier task. plus, it’s kind of annoying to have to enter an entirely different app than Messages to send the text! overall, it’s a great (and needed) feature, but the eduction is just poor
Txhd01 - This app is not what it seems!!
I’ll say I was excited to see a full keyboard available on Apple Watch, but like the title says, this app is not what it seems. The app is NOT integrated into the native Apple Watch OS Messages app like the emoji keyboard is for example, even though it does integrate into the Messages app on the iPhone OS. To use this you have to go into the Shift app on the Apple Watch and “create a new message” every time. It doesn’t matter if there is a previous text conversation on the watch or not, you still have to go through the Shift app to use the full keyboard. If you receive a text and want to reply to it, you have to memorize all portions of the text and then leave the Messages app and open the Shift app to reply using the full keyboard. Also, you can use this app with the Messages app only, and no other messaging apps. I will say that the keyboard is pretty accurate and has a few user settings available, outside of that it was a waste of the $1.99 that it costs. I’d like to get my money back, but I’m guessing that’s not going to happen, especially since the price of the app has doubled in the last few months. So if you’re looking for a full keyboard app that is integrated into the Apple Watch Messages app, SAVE YOUR MONEY, BECAUSE THIS IS NOT THAT APP. This app could’ve had so much potential, but in my opinion it fell on its face.

At some point you’re not going to want someone to hear the text you’re sending & a “smart response” just isn’t going to cut it. The keyboard is big enough to see clearly and for “fat fingers” to type on & if you’re old school it is reminiscent of the old original keyboard options on the flip phone screens (except wayyy easier). I have nothing but positive things to say. The only thing that could make it better is a second “space” key on the 1st half of alphabet for added convenience (when your word is covered in the 1st half of the alphabet). I never leave reviews but this app is worth every penny of the 99 cents.
JJ-Hull - Shift Keyboard Review
Really useful app , took me awhile to find a format where I could tap to text on my watch. This is a really simple , straight to the point app. It has everything it says it would, doesn’t exaggerate any features for advertisement purposes. Only complaint I have is that I wish the entire keyboard was visible along with the send button without scrolling up and down to find the letter you’re looking for. Other than that, this is probably the best type to text app for the Apple Watch ! I understand you’re limited in space for a small screen, but it almost contradicts the speed factor that’s advertised. I guess that’s just the trade off.

This is exactly what the watch has needed since day one!! Simple to use & intuitive. Takes a bit of playing with to figure it all out, but it does pretty much everything the phone’s native keyboard does, but on the watch! Brilliant! So many times I’ve gotten a message and wanted to send a quick reply from the watch that wasn’t covered by the pre-programmed replies, and I wasn’t near my phone right then. This app lets me send a reply from anywhere in the house without needing to haul the phone all over.
Techie 84 - Good Idea, but hard to use on the Apple Watch
I just downloaded the app to my watch after seeing it being suggested on iDrop news. It is hard to use the app on the watch being that when you thinking your pressing the “back” button, the screen goes to the preview page. Also, to reply to a text message, I would have to go to my app layout on the watch, then select the keyboard, and then type the message and then be taken back to the messages app to select who I want the message to go to.
But again, good idea

Right now you have to access the app to type and then send but hopefully will give us the option to add it to messages in the future.
BikesBrookie - Much Improved
I bought this app a few weeks ago and had trouble typing accurately and quickly. After the latest update I have a better experience. I can type more accurately and efficiently. The send button has improved and the “Full Keyboard” feature improved as well. The “Full Keyboard” used to limit your typing by not allowing you to use periods or question marks or apostrophes. Now with the update, you can add these to the message. Keep up the hard work. You are almost there!
Tony 1963 - It makes the watch better!!
A lot of watch apps are just companion pieces for the iPhone and don’t really make the watch something cool. This app makes me smile!!! I often send little short texts and with the iPhone in my pocket it used to have to rely on dictation or the scribble, neither of which are very accurate now I have this handy keyboard to send my snarky little thoughts. It works fantastic on the Series 5 44mm screen. My thanks to whoever made this app
BrandonLN - Great Key Size, Slow Typing
I got this for the watch app. I do love the size of the keys, but having to scroll to get to the letter you're after in a typed word is excruciatingly slow. I can swipe out what I need to type much faster.
Also, I was under the impression you can see what is being typed noatter where you are at, even scrolling down to keys late in the alphabet and emojis. Once past the initial screen of letters, I cannot see what is being typed. The scrolling is killing me on this keyboard.
tntracy - Good Potential, But...
Thus app has good potential, but it doesn't appear to support sending a typed message to an existing group PM in Message (or I can’t figure out how to do so) - just to individual recipients. I often need to reply to group messages, so I am not finding it very useful at this time.
cbriody - Good idea in theory
I wanted a better, quicker input than the stock approach of drawing the letters. I thought this had promise but it took much longer to try to type than draw out each letter individually. The full keyboard is not as responsive as it should be and the precise one takes too long to scroll up and down to get to the letters at either end of the alphabet. Maybe if there was a swipe typing option for the full keyboard it might be more useful but for now I’ll stick with drawing letters with my finger.
Katrishaharr - Ok but not what I was hoping for.
I downloaded this bc I needed a keyboard for my watch that I can swipe with. But I can not get the swipe to work. Everyone I click on the first letter Ana swipe it doesn’t show the word or predictions of what I swiped at all and jus puts a space between every letter. And when I tried to type I wouldn’t click the right letters. That was disappointing for that. I would like my money back for this app since I will be deleting it not being able to swipe text at all.

Only issue I have seen so far is the lack of spell check, and the emojis need to be a little easier to enter. Otherwise I love the app. This is what I’ve been looking for, it’s far more intuitive then the native Apple reply methods.

I thought it would be a keyboard on the messages app but it’s not. In order to use it you have press on to the app write something and then it will forward you to the messages app where then you can send the messages. Also it’s very slow to write, its faster to just scribble. Seller if your reading this please process me a refund or I’ll dispute the charge...!!!!

It can type and send (only) text message directly from built-in Messenger in Apple Watch, but can not type (since Shift keyboard never appears to type) for “replying to message” in built-in Messenger and FaceBook Messenger in Apple Watch S4.

I bought the bundle and both apps underwhelm. This keyboard is way unresponsive, most touches don’t even register. Prediction is hilariously off base most times

Great app but it’s useless! All of the advertising makes it seem like it will replace the current Apple Keyboard- or lack of one that is. However after purchasing I found out that Apple watches do not SUPPORT 3rd party keyboards. Very disappointed. Should be made clear on all of your advertising.

The app should be supported by all apps using text as input not only messages. Most of us receive messages via Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter rather than the messages app (where we most receive carrier related offers and informational sms). Please make it useful on social media apps, really need it.

sorry adam. i got your answer to my review earlier. its a neat app, and yes, the keyboard is shown on apple site as not all on the one screen. but thats why it doesnt work for me personally. its just as quick to write msgs with ones finger in the apple watch system as it is to scroll up and down with the shift keyboard to hit any of the alphabet. i really wanted to like this product but cant. its great if u dont mind scrolling up and down. :0)

everytime the delete button gets stuck, closing out the app does not work. i have to delete and reinstall the entire app. it will get stuck and continue to vibrate my watch. even if i start typing it will keep deleting. i have yet to be able to use it successfully. seemed like a cool concept.

The new swiping feature is not as fast as I would have liked, although it is possible to make something similar to the keyboard currently in iOS 13 or is that too difficult? It is really annoying and slow using the swipe keyboard because you have to wait for the letter to be recognised by the software and is very easy to mistype a word. The tap keyboard doesn’t really compete with it’s competitor Flicktype simply because it’s writing experience is not as good. I have found a good use for the precise keyboard to type numbers and other symbols very quickly when needed, but I’m afraid that’s the only thing I find that works well and is unique to this app, although this feature alone probably isn’t worth the $3. Looking forward to further updates and maybe an improvement to the swipe keyboard.

I got this specifically to use on the Apple Watch, but it's just too difficult. The keyboard needs more space than the screen can provide, so while the keys are a good size, you're constantly scrolling up and down the keyboard. At this stage scribble is still more effective than a touch keyboard on the watch

The app is terrible. I thought that I’d be able to send messages straight from the message app but unfortunately that is not this. If you are interested in having to text through a 3rd party app then go for it but if not this is definitely not the app for you. The time it take to write out the message , then select the person to send it to then have it sent via the message app you could’ve scribbled or spoken 20 messages (I’m exaggerating of course, the point is that it takes a long time to send one message). I’m definitely disappointed
