Proton VPN: Fast & Secure Comments & Reviews 2024

💸 Want to send money abroad for free?

We transfer money over €4 billion every month. We enable individual and business accounts to save 4 million Euros on bank transfer fees. Want to send free money abroad or transfer money abroad for free? Free international money transfer!

Give Credit, But Some Bugs. UPDATE 2-1-21: Unfortunately the usual ProtonVPN bug is back where all traffic ceases but VPN seems to be connected. Normal function resumes (for awhile) if you connect to a different server. This bug has plagued me for many, many versions of ProtonVPN and I’d hoped it was gone, but unfortunately it’s still a part of my routine now to have to switch servers in order to have internet connectivity on my device. A shame because things looked to be headed in a better direction for a short while there. Original review: Gotta give them kudos for fixing what had been really broken for awhile. New version is much more stable and the ad blocking is very good. Thanks ProtonVPN team and sorry for being a critic there for awhile, but I’m giving credit where it’s due now. Good on ye’

Really great value, but unfortunately pretty much unusable. The value of this vpn is amazing. You get it completely for free, no monthly payments or ads. Which is impressive considering how expensive most vpns are. But unfortunately you just can't keep this one on all the time. It makes your device so incredibly slow that there's no way most people are going to actually keep using it long term. It's nice to turn on sometimes, maybe if you're on a specifically risky site or want to surpass location restrictions or something. But you can't just always be running it in the background. You'll be staring at a picture forever before it finally loads in. Even just opening up something simple like Google has a huge delay. I had this on for a couple weeks but eventually got tired of waiting in between every single thing I did on my phone so I just shut it off.

Works fine. I have read some of the most recent reviews and I’m not sure what these people are trying to do with the app. I’ve been using the free version for almost 8 months now and I’ve had no issues with connection and disconnection or slow speeds. I’ve been very happy with the free version hopefully they will keep a free version. I’ve been somewhat hesitant To try the paid version given that sometimes when you switch from a free version to a paid version the paid version may not work as well. This may be what the prior reviewer’s were referring to was a paid version. Given current finances I will have to stay with the free version. I would like at some point to upgrade to the paid version.

You have to use some tricks, but it's fine.. ProtonVPN works pretty well, but only if you use some tricks. First off, always use the server in whatever country with the second most amount of people online. If you use the one with the least, you are doomed, because the reason that server has the least is because nobody can get on it. Okay, tip number two. When you click on the server with the second most amount of people, wait a bit for it to almost connect, then disconnect, and connect to that server again. That will usually make it work better. That's all! This is honestly a great vpn since they offer a free version.

Terribly unreliable. I’ve been paying for ProtonVPN for a bit over two months now. It frequently (multiple times a day, usually) loses its connection and fails to automatically reconnect, and I have to go into the settings and manually toggle it off and on, and then still only sometimes it will reconnect. Sometimes it takes toggling either WiFi or mobile data, and some other times I have to switch to a different server for it to start working again. Sometimes it displays the VPN icon as if it’s working, but all connections will fail until I switch to a different server. It’s completely maddening and I’m planning on switching to a different provider when I can. Speed is fine, secure core is a nice feature, and the widespread distribution of servers is also nice, but none of it is that useful when the foundations are so flaky.

Free problems or pay for problems. I am giving Proton VPN a try but so far it hasn’t lived up to the other proton app standards. If you are using an app or a mobile web browser that has a feed that updates, it won’t load with Proton VPN connected. This is not the case with other VPN providers such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN. So I did a search and found that this is a known glitch that Proton has released a fix for, but only for the paid versions of the vpn. So, I thought I’d give the paid version a try for one month, but the process has been the worst. Why don’t you have an easier way to upgrade subscriptions or add-on apps for current users? Why make it hard for the users who already use some of your products? What’s with the weird pricing for monthly and yearly subscriptions? It was the same for when I wanted to renew my proton mail subscription. Edit: 1 star because support is slow or no response after days. Whereas others have been within 24-48 hours.

Hesitant Five Stars. If you’re a Proton user, you’ve probably done the research already. For those of you who came here unprepared, allow me to nutshell it for you: Proton is very good at VPNing and one of the few big boys who you can -objectively- trust. However, the community of users tend to be very staunch in their opinions on the services, whether they’re pleased or otherwise. And as much as you can trust the claims Proton makes, you can- almost to the same extent- trust the validity of the community’s consistent complaints (new rollouts vs improving existing products, mobile apps dropping service w/o notifications, pricing, etc) So basically; this is not a “set it and forget it” VPN app. If you know what you need and Proton fits that niche, then they should absolutely be your choice. If you need a VPN so you feel confident that Comcast/Spectrum/whatever can’t see EVERY porn you watch, every time, then I’d look elsewhere.

Buggy. It takes multiple attempts just to connect to the VPN… And after ten tries when a connection is finally established, within a few hours the connection abruptly ends. Upon opening the app it says that I’ve reached my ten device limit when I only have one device (iPhone) that even uses this account (even changed my password as a precaution in case someone else was using my account so this is obviously a bug/glitch). Not to mention the fact that after locking the screen for more then a few minutes the VPN disconnects and you have to manually reopen the app and repeat the process of trying to establish a connection over and over again as usual. I understand that the vpn disconnecting on sleep is an OS wide problem but it’s clearly a problem that can be successfully circumvented as other VPN clients like passepartout have already created a working “always on” VPN that functions quite well for ios. But if not that, please at least fix these bugs to make the VPN usable…

Run 24/7 and No Problems, Open Source, Plus Non-Profit Doing Good. My 1GB drops 250MB down and 150MB down but that speed is always reliable across all devices. Also use separate relay which may cause speed to drop. I also do not use their VPN acceleration option which could greatly increase my speed. My connection is fast enough that I have never needed any more speed and their stealth mode to disguise VPN connection has managed to bypass all those super ignoring captcha screens that VPNs use to get or even blocked due to IP address. They are also non-profit, have been recognized by United Nations as a secure solution to securely get information out of authoritarian countries, use their profits to provide VPN services for free to those places, and make all their products open source.

What Happened???. Used to be flawless, in my opinion. Started with the free trial, and ended up purchasing the upgraded version, along with my Protonmail. About a month or so ago, the VPN service has just crashed and burned. It doesn’t hardly ever let me connect to the countries I want to connect to, I’m finding myself at risk constantly because it kicks me off of servers and won’t tell me. Please undo whatever you guys have done to make a great VPN service into a subpar VPN service. Side-note: It’s extraordinarily annoying to be logged out of my account, completely randomly and without warning. I’ve lost literally thousands of emails because I didn’t store my password anywhere (for security reasons) and to reset the password, it encrypts ALL of your messages. At least give an option to be signed out randomly or to stay logged in, although I’m sure that the majority of people would prefer to not be logged out without warning

Mindless Morons Monitor App Processing to Defeat Access by Playing Childish Games. First, the app stated I did not have an account and would not recognize names, email I previously registered. So I created a new account and was again denied stating names I registered were already taken. Duh. How stupid, childish and tech incompetent can they be????? They were taken by me when I created account and used vpn. Second they wanted me to do gotcha more than a dozen times. I quit after 3 correct gotchas, but then started again to see how many times they would go through process. After 12, I proved my point about their further incompetence and stupidity and could not waste any more time with it. Third, they put an alert in all red stating I was not connected to the internet, but I was, simultaneously. I mean, would you buy and trust a vpn whose employees acted as described above? Would you trust your apps and devices security and your on line safety to some who engages in the above conduct. I wouldn’t. And for second time refused to pay for a service run by incompetent losers who toy with your privacy and monitor your sign up process and play 2nd grade games with it. That’s because they have so few customers they don’t have any work obligations. This is who you are dealing with at this app. There is no way Zi could trust them to keep me safe online.

80% loss of data speed. As a network architect, I am very familiar with how VPN works. I’m disappointed with the loss of so much data throughput regardless of location or “fastest” servers. It’s consistently 80% or higher loss of both down and up speed- 140mbps down, becomes 13 to 15 down with upload performance impacted as well. I attempted multiple times to communicate via the app sending logs and report, but it just fails on timeout through the established VPN- Netguard had to be disabled for certain apps to run - SoFi banking, affirm and visible, to name a few. VPN accelerator appears to do more harm than good when it comes to throughput tests. - maybe it would help to have a closer NOC because I’m 10 hours from Miami and the next closest NOC is NY- No Atlanta? Kind of surprising. Anyway- two stars because I know my data is secure when I do need a VPN. Probably will cancel subscription unless I see something different in my testing

Typical shady company. The application you buy with no support. No ability to change subscription plans in app. And will try to charge you forever going forward without notification. I purchased this app for the year mainly to use ESPN plus while in Mexico. When it does not function on the same day I purchase proton VPN I try to contact support and receive none. I figure there’s nothing I can do, my bad, they got me and I’ll just eat the $100 bucks. I make sure I have no current subscription service with them via my sub page in the App Store and move on. Fast forward one year and I get charged via my PayPal without warning of a reoccurring charge will take place. Cancel through PayPal and then go to look where I can make sure I can cancel on the app or submit a ticket… of course they don’t let you change anything “in app”. I go to website, and if you downgrade or cancel your subscription they will take away the services you just paid for, for the next 365 days. Talk about shady. There are better company’s out there that actually care, these guys aren’t it. Purchase at your own risk. Open ticket pending through PayPal but I’m chalking it up as a loss at this point (again), will update as things progress.

Love the app thanks you for creating it.. After last update I lost all my saved profiles. It wasn’t that big a deal because generally make another when the current one is over 50% usage. Fortunately there are lots to choose from. I love when Facebook and other platforms think I’m in a different state. I did have to explain to my bank but they understood immediately. I log into my mother’s bank using the phone and no VPN (I generally don’t use WiFi unless at home). I know that my internet provider can get my information but I’m not that paranoid yet. I love the idea that you will not sell, reveal my information. In fact I don’t think they can because the encryption is done as it should be were even they can’t get the information. It’s a comfort to not be tracked or harassed and I can say anything I want without being cancelled. Unless the person I’m talking to does so and that is between us. Thanks for a wonderful app

Most secure according to specs. Updated, I found out how my IP was exposed, so everyone knows not to do this, here it is: If you enter a profile while it’s on, it shuts the VPN off and your IP is exposed. So don’t do this! —————————————————— This is my first day on Plus. So far I am very pleased. Been testing it going in and out of airplane mode. I did have an IP leak, once, prior to testing airplane mode, thus I am trying to figure out how this happened. It certainly wasn’t purposeful. There is no button for preventing DNS leak in IOS. Is this already enabled on all plus accounts? Dunno.. Also, I have IOS tracking across apps disabled. Hope this doesn’t affect how it operates with apps. Because I previously had that setting disabled and something recently turned it back on. And I turned it off again.

Good, but can slow or interrupt connection. I got this with my proton mail. I’m working from home in customer service and was hacked via the PC I bought for my pandemic work-from-home-gig. I went three months without income last year because of hackers trying to steal my Unemployment the previous year, so this second security breach was the last straw. Much more cautious about online security now, and don’t use the PC for anything outside of work with their VPN. (I’m typically an Apple user anyway) Mostly using this VPN on my iPad and it’s working for me, but it does slow things down a bit, and just this morning I had to de-install and re-install because the iPad wasn’t making the connection. I was mostly in need of a couple of secure email accounts, so this is a great bonus for my needs for now.

Extremely private however that’s about it.... ProtonVPN/ProtonMail is known for their concentration on protecting the privacy of their customers. This they do very, very well. But the IOS version of their VPN is always disconnecting or facing extreme speed issues. Update: I have been using Proton Mail for years and truly believe because of their dedication to privacy that the VPN should be one of the best if not the best. I had been having speed and connectivity issues however changing the protocol to IKEv2 has solved most all problems. I have subscriptions to Proton, CyberGhost, Nord, Surfshark, and IP Vanish (I really like to keep everyone guessing) however given the speeds I’m now receiving (250 Down/174 Up) matched with the unbeatable Privacy issues I have no need for many of the others.

Keep your expectations low!!!. I moved to ProtonVPN from Nord because of the better privacy policy of the ProtonVPN. I have been using ProtonMail for a long time & it is great. I started using it on my iPhone & MacBook. But man o man, it is sooooo veeery slow. Nord was much much much faster. On a 1Gigabit LAN connection it reduces speed by more than 10X. On Wifi it is much worse. It constantly keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. I hardly had any such issues on Nord. I wish the developers figure out what is wrong. Speed reduction is expected while on a VPN connection & we who choose to make such compromises never expect a 10X reduction in speed and frequent disconnections. A VPN is supposed to run in background but when the speed is sooooo slow it frustratingly makes a person realize you are on a VPN connection. The speeds we get here are expected on the hawkish VPN services not on a reputable company like Proton Technologies. Hope it gets figured out soon.

Excellent. This one of the best VPN besides other 2 that I used and Proton goes above and beyond. If I’ve had an issue it was the settings that I’ve had the phone on prior or during while using it. I’ve tried a lot and alternate with DNS AdGuard and ContolD And it’s VPN parent company. Only the best. If at the bottom of the pile are ones that claim to do to much while doing nothing like Clario. Plus the free tier does not sell your stuff not that I have much for that anyway but still if people’s have issues check your phone settings or other apps because Proton is Top notch as all it’s services like it’s Mail app gets talked about and recommended in some Tor sites and THAT is saying a lot.

Locking screen causes connection issues. Converted from another VPN, and liked it at first. After a while though, I noticed that when your phone closes, it loses connection to your VPN. When reopening, it tries to connect to the vpn, causing connectivity issues that often require me to turn off vpn, turn it back on, kill the app I was using, and bring it back up. This happens multiple times a day. When I googled “protonvpn disconnects phone close”, it appears this issue has gone for several months, and says all VPNs struggle with it. Well, my previous one didn’t. I’ll still use it as the old VPN subscription expired and I bought a year or two subscription for Proton pack, but it’d be nice if this could be prioritized as it seems like a usability issue at best and possibly a security issue at worst

Great at what it does, except for one thing…. As someone who already uses Protonmail, getting ProtonVPN as my VPN provider was a no-brainer, especially as I got to upgrade my Protonmail account in the process. While I have a wide variety of servers to choose from, the one aspect I found particularly annoying was that ProtonVPN would always default to a US-based server whenever it could. As someone based in the US, being able to connect to a foreign server was a major selling point for me, but not only is there no way to configure a profile to never connect to a US-based server, the app would automatically connect me to one if I lost a connection to another server I was already connected to at times. There needs to be a way to exclude specific countries within connection profiles to best enhance privacy and security.

Could be 5 stars. Update: Aug 14, 2021 - I don’t know if it’s an iOS limitation but I always have to wait around 5-8 seconds for the VPN to connect when I unlock the phone when it’s been locked for a bit. Is the OS freezing the app in the RAM? Enabling background app refresh for this app made no difference as well. Also I have mistakenly thought the “kill switch” on the iOS app was the “permanent kill switch” that I use on desktop. Hopefully it can be added later on. I’ve raised the rating another star because Proton actively reads & responds to their reviews. Quality of life wishlist: 1. Switching the quick connect button to where the Connected/Not connected top bar is and vice versa. I have to slowly and consciously avoid swiping up from the bottom middle so I don’t accidentally disconnect. 2. “Malware & ads” option for Netshield. I think blocking the tracking is breaking some of my restaurant apps since my rewards won’t load unless I do malware only. 3. Profiles also saves the selected Netshield option. 4. Option to make backup of the profiles onto local storage of device. I noticed my profiles were gone when I reinstalled because of 2.5.1 issue. 5. Search box for the server list like the desktop app. Those of us looking for a country or using a server name that starts with a letter in the second half of the alphabet need to scroll a lot more. 6. Server filters for both mobile & desktop app. (Countries, server type, high load, etc.)

Unacceptably bad. UPDATE: I’ve been using the free “Plus” trial for a week. This is the 4th time in the last 8 hours the VPN has turned itself off and disconnected my WiFi, leaving me to fiddle with both in order to properly reconnect. I’ve read the reviews on here - this has been an ongoing issue with smartphones for at least a YEAR!? Clearly the developers don’t find leaving even paying customers vulnerable to exploits a problem, and have no intention to fix this issue! As expensive as this product is, absolute fail! Just ok. Often much slower than expected, and I have to interrupt my work more often than I like to try to find the “right” connection. To be fair, this could be because the building-wide wifi gets a bit slow from time to time to begin with. Not as slow as nord vpn, less sketchy than bitdefender, and I haven’t been blocked from any sites for being on a vpn like cyber ghost. In theory Proton should be less likely to have vulnerabilities or be compromised like some of the big names have been or could be, so that is the main sell.

Reliable VPN, drains battery. Update - battery drain: I want to update my review after further day-to-day use of ProtonVPN. I have noticed battery drain from the app is substantially higher than other VPN apps. I am seeing a confident 40%+ increase in drain compared to the priors two apps I used. I previously used Private Internet Access and another VPN app, all are setup to use WireGuard for connections. For Proton I use WireGuard by default but have Smart protocols enabled, which may be switching me to more inefficient protocols and therefore the drain? I am not sure what about Proton’s implementation is causing the drain to be so substantial but my ability to have a VPN enabled at all times is not possible with this app. I constantly have to disable VPN and be more conscious of battery conservation each day due to this problem. It’s still a great and robust app, but i think it needs more work on fixing this issue. —- My prior rating of this VPN was 1 star due to its initial offering having some serious gaps. I’ve now revisited the app and can say I’m impressed with the features and polish that has been introduced over time. Keep up the great work devs

awesome VPN. i'm a privacy freak, so i like to have a VPN on all the time. even at work, especially, even. not that i'm trying to bypass content blocks, but i'm not supposed to have access so i'd rather be safe. expressvpn only worked temporarily, then would lose internet access and need reconnected. IPvanish didn't work at all. this is despite both services having great performance on my PC at home. but i need a VPN at work too. this VPN is great, the free servers work so well that it inspires confidence in this company's desire to protect privacy. i will be buying a subscription. i tried all other well known VPNs at work, and NONE worked.

Forced to pay outside the app if you want monthly. If you want the subscription services that go monthly which most likely you do well get ready to give them you credit card info outside the app. I love paying through my App Store account bc it acts as a wall making sure these vendors we know nothing about don’t see our info. It also ensures better control and no shady cancellation requirements that end up scamming you. The App Store pretty much solved this problem with these vendors. We want to stop the sub then within a few taps you’re done. Plus the App Store makes things so clear no games. So I don’t recommend this app bc it’s screams shady if they don’t offer all the same services within the app/App Store. Forcing you to pay outside the App Store with the lure of a small discount isn’t worth the risk of future hassle or worse losing money.

The #1 VPN. Compared to every VPN I’ve tried, (ExpressVPN, Cyber Ghost, TunnelBear) This is by far the best one. It leaves all others in the dust, and I’m just talking about the base VPN. Tons of countries to choose from, tons of settings to mess around with, there’s everything. Proton Mail is almost even better! If you have the highest plan, you’re able to make hundreds of emails, you can even choose to direct all your mail from various emails into ONE place. One of the best features for the app. I’m planning on trying out the calendar soon. I highly recommend getting it, and purchasing the highest plan. Great company, great product, great everything.

VPN when it works…. I subscribed to the Proton Plus version of the VPN service so i could browse on US servers while traveling overseas with no issue. My friend recommended this app but i’m starting to regret making this purchase. The VPN only worked for an hour or two before disconnecting and now it won’t connect to any foreign servers whatsoever. Toggled all of the protective settings in order to connect to VPN in the US but it still does not work. I’ve closed and rebooted the app, restarted my phone and still can’t connect. It also won’t connect to any other country outside of my current location. If i’m unable to connect to servers of my choice, this paid service is simply ineffective. What gets me is that there’s an option on the app to submit an error report. If you try to enter feedback, the error report comes back with an error of its own. It states there was an error and the request has timed out. This is a pretty subpar standard for troubleshooting and customer support. Really glad that I didn’t pay for more than the one month. I wanted to try it first and i’m glad i eased into this purchase. Back to the drawing board for a real VPN service.

Absolutely HATE this update!. This update is a severe downgrade in terms of functionality, user friendliness, and over experience. Proton has removed the ability to choose individual servers and have made the app totally pay-to-play. If I try and switch between “free” servers it randomly chooses for me. While I’m traveling I have to stay connected for work and my job requires a domestic VPN to login to the network. This update has undermined my ability to do my job. What one was a GREAT VPN has taken on the model of a money grabbing cheap casino app. UPDATE: Since the update more websites are blocked, speed has slowed significantly, and I’m having to prove I’m human on more and more websites. This on top of the fact most streaming apps don’t function while using Proton VPN. Before I knew which servers worked best for which sites and now I’m forced to use whatever Proton deems “the best option”. If I want a VPN I can actually use Proton solution/recommendation is “upgrade” or take what you get. Your app was “ok” at best when I had some choice in servers, it was usable. But I’m not going to pay for a VPN nearly all my streaming apps won’t function with. This WAS a descent VPN to browse with and that’s it. Proton VPN pay to play rather than have ads or some other form of generating income coupled with their limited compatibility with so many apps and websites has put them behind other VPNs. As of now it’s just taking up space on my Home Screen.

Unknown why. I have ProtonMail and it works great so I figured I would give this a try. And I did the free trial version and all was well. As soon as it switched to the free version my phone started crashing and now working properly. At first I thought it was a problem with my phone so I contacted T mobile my carrier and they tried for two days to help me. When they couldn’t figure out what was wrong because it said everything was fine on there end but on my side it said I had no internet connection or WiFi even though all my other devices were working, they couldn’t figure out what was going on. So they put me in contact with apple who tried to fix my problem and took me thru everything they knew what to do and they couldn’t figure out what was making my phone malfunction. They set an appointment with my local apple store to see what they could do. This morning I decided to see if it was my vpn and as soon as I uninstalled the proton vpn, it started working fine. I hope you guys can figure out what caused this problem.

Not sure how to rate have questions. To start I need answers and solution then you will get six stars and a subscription from me So I contacted Apple and they told me that I needed to contact you even though I read on the other comments stated from your end that you fixed the disconnection or that you can’t fix it you reported it and they won’t fix it they told me it’s an issue with a developer and for me to get in contact through the review section of all places I would give this thing five stars and purchase it if I knew that everything was safe when my phone disconnects from the VPN I am unsure if the apps are still working in the background and then able to track me and find out my location or anything else about me while it’s just sitting there and I’m taking a nap or a break from the phone or what not I need to know what to do so we can further in this it’s an amazing service even the free part of it is really nice but still disconnects I have the Killswitch on too but I still get messages even though it’s disconnected I’m not sure how that works

No Interactive Widgets. Solid VPN but the lack of interactive widgets with iOS 17 make it kind of annoying to turn on and off. Some apps won’t function with it on. UPDATE: To clarify, the only widget on iOS currently is the Today View Widget. It only shows at the bottom of the other widgets. Thus it can’t be moved string and placed on a Home Screen. Also, it is not interactive. I’d like to see a few different options. 1) The ability to be able to have the ProtonVPN widget on my Home Screen with a simple connect/disconnect option that is interactive. 2) A larger widget option would also be nice that would allow me to connect to specific VPN profiles I’ve created. I downloaded SurfShark today just to see if it has interactive widgets that can be placed on the Home Screen and it does. I really don’t want to switch services, but this is a pretty basic feature that most apps have. Regarding, apps that don’t work with it on is because I have the ad blocker turned on. So I’d like to be able to toggle the VPN off with an interactive widget before launching those apps.

What good is a vpn that won’t stay connected?. It loses connection when the device is locked. Proton blames iOS but other vpns I’ve tried do not have this issue so if there is an issue with iOS it is possible to make it work anyway but proton is content to deliver a subpar product and blame someone else rather than make it work. I like a lot about proton but if it won’t even stay connected it is utterly useless. Update since ProtonVPN responded to the above: proton continues to try and justify their inferior service by blaming apple. I cannot say what software (apple’s or proton’s) is to blame here but it doesn’t matter to me because either way the service proton claims in advertising to work on iOS does not actually work on iOS. And either way their competition has figured out how to deliver a working service rather than being comfortable shipping a useless service and blaming someone else. The persistent copping out causes me to lose further trust in the company, even if this technical issue is ever fixed there is a low likelihood I ever want to pay for their service again.

It’s disconnects and reconnects constantly!. I paid for a year of this sub-par service! I had a friend suggest it and when I tried it and bought the year I told him it disconnects and reconnects constantly and he started to look for that issue and noticed his iPhone Pro Max 13 was doing the same thing. I have a script I run that shows me a notification when the VPN disconnects and reconnects. The stability of this VPN is horrific but I wish the developers well in fixing it! To the reply about it being Apple’s fault I don’t entirely buy. I have used and tested many many VPN’s and the highly ranked ones keep a steady connection without disconnecting all the time like Proton VPN does. So I say back, if they are maintaining a connection then why doesn’t yours, that doesn’t fly with me that it’s an Apple iOS problem. But who knows……..

Stopped working on iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 17.4. Works fine on an iPad running iPad OS 17.4, but is non-functional on iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 17.4. Upon trying to connect on iPhone 14 Pro running iOS 17.4, it spins, fails to connect and disables WiFi. I need to delete the Proton VPN profile in order to reenable WiFi. This is a bad bug. Otherwise, it would be a five star app. *UPDATE* I deleted all my network configurations and then Reset Network Settings, then configured my network settings on my iPhone again and set-up Proton VPN again and now all is working once again. Something in my iPhone network configuration must have become corrupted during the update to iOS 17.4. Updated review back to five stars. Leaving original text here so others with the same issue might find the solution.

Read and learn what a VPN is, so you can know what preferences you are missing!. I have had Proton mail and Proton VPN for years. I read several reviews that were bad. Almost all was because the person just did not know where to look to change a preference or just does not know anything about how a VPN works. I have set up several profiles as to where I want to connect. Always use Secure Core. I like that I can change to any location, just by clicking on a profile I created. If one profile server speed is slow, I click on another. Guys, read the instructions and learn how a VPN works, it’s capabilities and how to customize it like you want it. Whatever VPN you use, make sure the servers are not in the U. S. And a country that is big on people’s right to privacy. Sad but true, the U.S is at the top of collecting, mining & spying. And I don’t support using VPN’s for criminal activities. I was an LEO for 27 yrs and I do not believe in just grabbing everyone’s metadata off their cells at a Super Bowl just because they can. Get a warrant!! In closing, I tried dozens of VPN’s and then ran many security test over the years . Proton passes them all. The only way Proton will fail it’s customer base, is folding from political pressure. But I think these guys & girls work at Proton for a reason. And that reason is because privacy matters.

Love the app. Love the service. Love the company. I’ve been using the free version for months and am about to upgrade to pro. I highly suggest checking out proton VPN’s transparency report. I especially like using their free U.S. Servers on top of my router-configured vpns through other VPN companies in whom I trust less via servers in other countries (which normally inhibits me from doing things like viewing local news,etc.). Turning on free proton U.S. on iOS means I can use these services again while keeping the privacy I prefer. It should be noted that Apple should be utterly ashamed of themselves for disallowing the VPN killswitch. Apple is NOT interested in guarding your privacy except in the instances where doing so supports their half-evil business model.

Phenomenal Experience!. My concern for privacy and security has grown immensely the past few years, as my awareness grew. After much research and trials, Proton Technologies Mail + VPN services have truly been the best thus far to my experience, of course. I began with the free email account and made my way to the free VPN. Ultimately, I grew to enjoy & appreciate both Mail + VPN; therefore, I decided to upgrade to the Mail + VPN Plus (combo) subscription. The rest is history...I have no complaints. My transition from other mainstream services for personal email to Proton Mail have been relatively painless. There FAQs and fidelity in step-by-step guidance via their web-page(s) makes “doing it yourself” plausible. The intricacies to computer technology and all it entails can be intimidating, but do not worry, help is standing-by. Thank you Proton Technologies personnel from the bottom-up (& vice versa) for making this possible. I certainly appreciate all your efforts. Take care & Peace!

Good, with some flaws. ProtonVPN is a good service. The iOS app, while stable, has a few things missing. Plus subscription unlocks region-locked content as advertised, NetShield works as expected. Improvements I’d like to see: sometimes on reconnect after unlocking the app will connect you to your default profile instead of the last used profile. Servers in mainland China would be nice. Split tunneling would be incredibly useful. Finally, something that would allow me to have the VPN always enabled would be a widget that, beyond being a “quick connect” button, allows you to add it to the Home Screen and allows you to quick swap NetShield settings and saved profiles.

Near Perfect with two big problems. With this app I’ve had almost no problems, it does what it promises; I had no problem watching movies and tv shows from other countries with it. (Region blocked content on Netflix) but you can’t really pick which server you get-if you get a good one good job, but it’s all chance. I get it’s to have people pay for the paid tier but that’s not the big problem. The big problem I’ve had is that you can’t turn it off without uninstalling it, it makes you do a VPN thing and then it like breaks*. And to my knowledge there’s nothing you can do besides uninstalling it. Yeah but besides that it’s all good. EDIT: Nevermind I just couldn’t figure out how to do it but I did now

Cannot use anymore. Downgraded to one star because I cant really connect at all anymore. I did some reading and I think it is because of Russia using Proton services? This seems really bad. Does Proton allow Russia to use services? If so, in a small way it seems like Proton is supporting Russia’s war? I don’t think Proton should allow Russia to use services right now. Isn’t that the point of sanctions, to punish Russia so they stop murdering innocent people or to have their citizens get angry enough to fight back against the regime? It seems wrong that Russian people have a right to privacy while Ukrainian people are dying. What good is privacy to dead people? I thought the point of or the mission of your company is basically ethics ( as in unethical to mine data and sell it to gain advantage... etc.) so where are your ethics now as a company? What a shame, they prefer Russian business vs the rest of the world!

Confused, Disappointed. I downloaded this app 11 days ago and I was happy with it. It works in the back ground and I wasn’t aware of any issues I didn’t even know I was on the 10 day trial for the premium version. Although I downloaded the iOS version for my Apple products, after the 10 days and I didn’t step up to the premium, I wanted the free version at this time, all of a sudden I was unable to access the internet with WiFi. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong, my husband was getting WiFi, so I knew it wasn’t that. When I picked up one of my apple products that i had not downloaded Proton VPN yet, i had WiFi on it! So I uninstalled this app from my phone and ipad, suddenly I had WiFi. Just so you know, you may not get WiFi if your not on the premium version. We live in a canyon where there is no cell service, so we do rely on WiFi emergency notifications.

Working well. Have had this on my iPhone and iPad for a few days. Connection holds well. I have to give the VPN kudos though. Had been having major trouble with my yahoo mail via IMAP with emails disappearing or whatnot in my client email view. The connection to yahoo mail server is 1000% better since going thru Proton VPN. Cant explain it it but happy to notice this benefit. Yahoo server is such a slog, clog and the VPN seems to clear that up. Great overall. I am also trying the Proton email, though not sure how much of my email I can transfer over from Yahoo. I need to save a bit. But it will probably become a more default email option. Happy with both but especially the VPN.

Do not recommend.. Under no circumstances would I purchase this product. Somehow has become less reliable after I upgraded from the free version. Of course there are multiple tiers to choose from, I apparently picked the “pay for absolutely nothing” option. I was hoping it was just me but I see many other comments with the exact same issues. Disconnects randomly, often won’t tell you, or will say it’s connected to a server but be unusable. You will spend more time staring at the ProtonVPN connect screen than you will spend using your search engine almost every time, and often through multiple server hops. I pay for premium and still occasionally will be connected to a free server automatically, and nearly every day it will just turn off without notifying me. Best I can tell is this has something to do with the daily alarms/notifications and the DND mode that turns on when you use your phones sleep/alarm schedule. Screen time limitation options in the iPhone might also affect it, but I have it set as an exception everywhere that’s relevant. Completely turning off and not even attempting to notify or reconnect before allowing internet use seems like an absolutely critical failure for a VPN. Hopefully it gets better and I will gladly change the rating. I want this product to work. For now, stick to the free or go elsewhere.

Much better than a year ago. I had initially signed on for a year of ProtonVPN and found it to be very frustrating to use on my iPhone. The VPN connection would essentially be paused while the phone was not in active use and it would take more than 10s, sometimes 60+s if on LTE, to reestablish a connection. Sometimes a connection could not be established via LTE. I emailed support and after collecting info it boiled down to the way iOS handled VPN connections and I wasn’t the only one experiencing issues. They told me that they were actively working with Apple to try to fix it. And they have! Now I can remain connected all day without having any delays when picking up my idle phone. There are always plenty of servers available and I’ve never had slow data speeds.

Updated Review - This Team Is Working Hard. Lots of great stability and reliability improvements over the last few months. Appreciate the hard work they’re doing in responding to feedback and in serving their users. Very fast and more stable since my last review. Prior review: When I connect the VPN it says connected at the bottom of the screen. But when I go back to the app it’s NEVER connected. It attempts reconnect again as it says “connecting” at the bottom of the screen. I have the kill switch to on. Is my data not going through the VPN when I believe it is? Does this thing work or not? It’s incredibly unreliable and regret a 1-year subscription. I have to go back to my prior VPN. This is unfortunate.

Constantly disconnects. A VPN is supposed to be a background app that, once activated, you can forget while you use other apps. This VPN constantly disconnects, causing “no connection” and “could not reach server” errors incessantly. When you switch to the VPN app to see whether it’s the problem again, sure enough its status indicator almost always says “connecting” (and often continues to fail until you manually stop and restart the process). This situation looks like Proton is trying to maximize insufficient connection capacity by quietly disconnecting clients during lulls in data transmission. That might be just fine if the the reconnection occurred instantly when a client’s activity resumed, but it doesn’t; instead, the user experience is one of frustrating connectivity interruptions so frequent and annoying that one becomes motivated to turn off the VPN altogether. This situation ruins the customers experience and puts the customer’s privacy at risk. It makes the subscription fee a bitter waste. I had a far better experience with PIA.

Ignore negative reviews, and read this!. Look when I found this app on a website called Tom’s Guide and saw the many reviews talking about connectivity issues, I definitely had low expectations for this app. But now using it myself, it hasn’t had any issues with disconnecting off of my phone while even turning it off. However just to let know some people, for me it did take a little bit longer sometimes to get connected to let’s say a US server. But honestly apart from that, this is definitely a decent VPN, especially for the fact that I’m using their free plan and it still works like a normal VPN. I’m still giving this 5 stars even with how sometimes it takes long to connect, because it’s not useless or not working like how many other people have been saying. And it definitely does work very well especially for completing free.

The best free VPN for PC is now the best free VPN for Mobile.. I used Proton VPN for PC since last year, and haven’t been disappointed. The free features are reliable and meet most people’s basic needs, making upgrading truly feel optional; Optional, but far from redundant as the best servers and several advanced features such as peer-to-peer are locked behind a paid account, for users that feel they would like them or just want to support the developers with their patronage. The moment the mobile app dropped I downloaded it, and have not been disappointed as it provides the same quality, reliability, and stability I loved on PC. If you get this app, you will not be disappointed whether you decide to pay money or not.

Would rate 5 stars if mine wasn’t bugged. I am on IOS, and I have used this app countless times for the past year and a half with no issues. The only reason I ever purposefully turned it off was because sometimes other apps would momentarily glitch as a result of the vpn, but this was extremely rare. However, I recently turned it off while trying to figure out why another app wasn’t working correctly, and found that when I turned it back on, it no longer worked correctly. My phone would tell me it’s connected, but then on apps such as Reddit, I found some of my accounts were being banned due to a past IP ban, despite my phone saying the VPN was connected. I had been using the VPN to circumvent these bans previously as I don’t get out the house much currently, and life gets pretty lonely for me so it’s nice(and fun) to hop onto a platform like Reddit and engage in the civil internet discourse of comment sections. Over all, it’s a very functional VPN, but I have to give it 4 stars because of this recent bug I’ve noticed.

Works how you would expect. This is a good free vpn and way better if you pay would recommend

Great. I use free ver. On my mac mostly and its very good. My wifi isnt fast but this looks like more or less the same speed not that bothered. Connections is solid most times. At first i mainly chose this because it offers JP. Netherland seems most fastest most times. US is also good. But rarely use it. I switch from JP to NL or reversed depending what im doing. I dont have issues with it. Its quite light and battery efficient. 5 stars on mac. On my iphone its abit laggy and slow just when clicking a country and stuff. Other navigations are normal. Connecting speed are most time slow than fast. Speeds are quiet on the slow side just below average mostly. But is till use it. Its just ok. Devices: mac 2013 iphone 5s Rating overall 4.5 stars

speed/buffering. I got really excited when I saw that this was free, I’ve been trying to find one for ages for my Netflix but when I downloaded it, selected my country and went on Netflix it was slower than my current internet - which is really slow due to the pandemic- I cant watch any of my shows due to how slow it is

Great service but shortcuts are broken. Previously the quick connect shortcut would work flawlessly, but since the latest updates it does nothing more often than not.

Well worth paying for. Used several vpn, and proton vpn is the leader. It’s the best for streaming, the best for everything really.

Brilliant app, 1stars are tech normies. Ignore the 1-star reviews as they are mostly from kids and people that have no idea how to use a VPN and this app. Works like a charm for me. Brilliant privacy policies as Proton always does. Thanks guys!

This app and it’s services are awesome. This is amazing. When ever I want to get around censorship my only option is Tor or VPN! On iPhone, there is no system wide Tor so VPN is my only option and Proton VPN has been the best and most reliable partners to me for over a year now. I get the fast internet experience on the free account though it is limited to just 3 locations on the free tier it’s good enough for me. The haven’t messed up so for, I’m looking for to paying for their services and contribute to Proton Team!

Well Wrought. Proton AG is an organization to be trusted when it comes to privacy and security. But how is their Virtual Private Network in particular? Here’s the brief: i) Appearance? Brilliant, updated to be uniform with their suite brand style. ii) Privacy practices? Brilliant, business governed by Swiss law and service provided by genuine privacy advocates. They care about what they do. iii) Privacy provided? Brilliant, hides your activity so no network monitor can read what you’re doing. Note that on the free tier, P2P traffic is prohibited, meaning Proton must monitor your activity inasmuch as is necessary to verify your traffic is not P2P. Monitoring is not extensive and your privacy is still preserved. iv) Security practices? Brilliant, one of their servers is even located in a former military base, apparently. v) Security provided? Probably good, if you’re on a paid plan you can rest easy knowing both your privacy and security is improved at a flick of a switch with Proton’s malware, tracker and advertisement blocking. I, however, am broke. Therefore uncertain how well these work. Free tier? Proton VPN is the best free VPN, others don’t hold a candle to it. With the latest updates, there are many free servers available across Japan, the U.S., and the Netherlands. Contrary to what the application may say, the free servers total over 100… not 300,000. Proton works hard, so I forgive them their mildly amusing counting difficulties.

It’s recommended if privacy is on top of your list. This VPN really stood out for me due to its privacy policy towards tracking information, it says it only tracks your OS version and model which is fine by me as long as it ain’t tracking other stuff, this one stood out because a lot of other free VPNs make their money by selling your info to third party’s but this one seems to be against it. There are a few downsides like the awful internet speed on the free plan and the paid plan is a tad pricey, but hey the developers at the end of the day can determine weather it is free or not and I’m great full that it is, just wish there was a free Aussie server lol.

a little disappointed. When I first downloaded this app it was AMAZING, worked with Netflix and all that, I deleted the app for a bit because I had no storage and when I downloaded it again everything CHANGED, like the app was very limited now, before when I used it to watch Japan and American Netflix it let me chose the serves and that but now THERES ONLY A FEW, it’s just sad. I honestly loved the app and now I don’t even like it.

Works perfectly. I have been using ProtonVPN (premium) for 3 months. It works perfectly. Continuously connected without dropouts, fast and simple to use.

Not reliable disconnects frequently. Purchasing a subscription is no better than the free functionality. Speeds are reasonable MOST of the time but occasionally completely stops with paid version. Disconnects frequently. If you’re serious about online security I don’t recommend this app and I won’t be renewing my subscription.

Nice. I like it, this VPN doesn't always load but it's really quick and handy.

Constant disconnections without notifying me. The VPN will constantly disconnect without warning or notification. I will be using it happily then suddenly I realise I am not on a VPN anymore, and have no idea how long I’ve been disconnected, or why. It’s made the app completely unusable, and not even worth having around. ProtonVPN for windows is already lacking in features and server count compared to others on the market, but I liked their business model so gave ot a go and it worked okay, but the iOS app is just completely unfit for purpose. Do not trust this app to stay connected.

Dead phone VPN Drop outs- Super slow speeds. Seemingly Failing Proton VPN App on iPhone, blocks service regularly. Speeds drop from 60mbps to 11mbps after connecting, just an example Yes, I frustratingly continually try different servers when phone service “dies” Smart Server is not so smart either

Flakey. As others have reported, the app just disconnects for no reason. Sometimes the connection to the internet keeps going, sometimes not. When checking if not, sometimes it’s trying to reconnect to the generic Australian server, sometimes not. If I manually stop the reconnect process, and restart it, sometimes it will reconnect, sometimes not. Under those circumstances manually selecting a specific server usually works, but i shouldn’t have to. I have a similar experience with my router running dd-wrt and openvpn. And it never used to be like this. This is disappointing. Like many on here I selected Proton because of their philosophy, but I’m considering going elsewhere. To the developers, if you read this, I’m not submitting a ticket. I’ve done this before and usually get a response like try a different server or reboot app/router. However, FYI, I’m in Australia but see similar issues with other countries

It is definetely one of the VPNs ive used. I have only been using this for 2 days on the basic plan, although a little bit pricy ($70~ AUD) the security is def worth it. I have encountered no isssues so far and I use it on my PC as well. The speeds are absolutely incredible, with very very minimal latency. Would def reccomend this VPN as it outperforms other VPNs which often take forever to connect, have like 3 servers and would randomly disconnect.

30 day trial is a scam. We found Proton didn’t work for our purposes. Downgraded. There is NOWHERE on the site to actually get your money back. So you have to do it via your credit card. Would have expected better from Proton but won’t make the mistake of trusting that brand again

Free and Reliable?. This VPN is safe and trusted ( way better than the one I used before). This VPN also keeps no logs, and is free to the public! Thank you!

Doesn’t follow load anymore. What is going on? Is this part of the “Force them into a subscription” tactic? Change between protocols with different countries and still doesn’t complete a server connection information… Very disappointing.

Doesn’t work for Streamotion (Kayo / Binge etc). This VPN service didn’t allow use of any Streamotion products (Kayo and Binge etc.) I paid for the upgraded service to be able to stream whilst in Europe. Upon requesting a refund, Proton advised that since I upgraded my account thru the app and not their website directly that I was then unable to get my money back. Avoid if you plan on using this VPN to use any Streamotion products / apps and not get your money back when it doesn’t work.

It’s trusted but one thing. This app doesn’t seem to let me watch one piece or anything else on Netflix the Japan VPN is broken somewhat you have to fix this before I run out of episodes to watch. Thanks for everything but help me with this. Also then I found some suspicious things when I saw the email. But if you could tell me what I’m doing wrong then I would really appreciate it.

Bad review. It really doesn’t work I tried to watch some things on Netflix, but it failed to work. Maybe if you changed the instructions a little and showed us how to use the app.

A solid performer. I Use it on three platforms, excellent support.

Outstanding VPN. I’ve tried a few VPN’s over the years and proton I’ve got to say just works. The speed is superb and barely noticeable and the amount of servers and connection protocols is endless which ensures a seamless experience every time.

Great service. Flawless service so far. Just switched from NordVPN, and this service is MUCH more reliable.

Good but could be better. This vpn is amazing especially if you are looking for a free VPN. But I had to waste 2 hours trying to figure out why my phone used data over internet. Want to guess what caused this? The VPN. As soon as it was gone from my Home Screen internet was working on my phone. Please fix this soon. Thankyou

AMAZING. Free vpn, what more can you ask for? Other than that it has a great interface and I like the idea of 3 locations for free users and several more for VIP, honestly just great.

Great. I can easily access it, it loads pretty quick for me and works nicely on 4G to. Most of the kids giving one star ratings obvious don’t know what they’re doing. If you ever read this just remember you get a 7 day premium plan then after that you get downgraded to the free version that gives you access to 3 countries which is still useful compared to other VPNs I have used.

Proton. Probably the best free VPN out there, I use this on my pc too and because I can’t pay for premium Rn the free trial is just as good and I would recommend it for anyone who is looking for a good cheap VPN or for anyone who needs a good free VPN

Almost 5 stars!. Two things I’d like to leave feedback on... 1. Why does it log out randomly? Can there be an option to Remember me forever? 2. Where’s the iOS widget? In the Settings > iOS Widget, it gives instructions on how to add a widget. When I try that, I don’t see ProtonVPN as an option. I can see options to add a widget for other apps but not ProtonVPN...

Latest release eats battery. Ordinarily, this is great. But ever since the latest update (total redesign), battery usage says 85% Proton Vpn, and 15% for all other apps. The phone is occasionally getting hot now, and the newest model phone completely drains in less than 8 hours. Support has no straightforward way to bring this up, so here we are.

There is something very weird and wrong going on with this application. This app is forcing me or the tech company or internet provider or some other con artist before it will even let me update this app to turn off wiregraud and the kill switch if none of these aren't turned off this app will not evem update at all possible and it keeps saying that I'm not even connected to any networks at all when my mobile date is activated and turned on What sort of nothing but fraudulent activities keep happening with this app because every single time I get any newer updates it will not allow it to update at all and keepd telling me to connect to a mobile data network or wifi network when I'm already connected to a mobile data network connection something or someone is fraudulently interfering with this app from ever updating I don’t know what the heck is going on with every time I try and update this app but it starts installing and then totally disconnects and I have to fully restart my phone and I have even had my son set up my phone as an entire new device and it’s still doing the same thing I really think that something or someone is stopping me from using this product on my phone especially with the weird things that are going on with it I even got my son to update all of my devices details because I’m not good when it comes to technology but like he said when a iPhone is totally set up as a totally new device and he didn’t even bring over any older information that nothing should in infecting a iPhone at all and apple tells us that we don’t need internet security companies I’m really starting to find that very difficult to believe after what I have been witnessing going on

Used to be good. Password won’t work when setting up the app on my new iphone. Reset password, used the temporary password emailed to me, doesn’t work. I had emailed support and they have no interest in helping. They just copy and paste spam that does not relate to the matter. Truly maddening. They don’t care. Eg “if you are not certain which is your password, you can easily reset it with your recovery email through the following link”. I mean, guys, WHY WOULD YOU WRITE THIS when obviously I’m writing that this method DIDNT WORK.

Greatly improved!. After previously giving Proton VPN a 1 star review for disconnecting me way too often, I am very happy to report things have greatly improved! When adding up the service quality to what Proton stands for and the trust I have in them, the result is a great product with lots of privacy oriented options (such as Tor VPN servers). I did take back 1 star because Proton’s a very expensive product indeed, especially when comparing with its competitors in privacy oriented VPN providers. But they are still my provider of choice.

VPN Doesn’t do anything!. I downloaded this to first see if I could watch shows that were restricted in my region. I opened up 4 different streaming services on every free region you offer and not a single thing changed. Why would I upgrade to the premium if the service doesn’t even work in the first place? Don’t waste your time with this app, go try a more reliable one like Nord or Express. Proton is worthless.

Netflix detects the proxy. So I like shows in the us they’re good like jojos bizzare adventure and the last VPN I used nord VPN let me watch it but that doesn’t connect anymore I love this app for the stuff that it gives the 7 day free trial but it’s not as strong as other vpns I’m sorry for my writing and feed back if it offended you

Good but…. When it works it’s great. But 95% of the time it just says loading connection info and stays like that forever. Please fix this because when it doesn’t happen the app is actually pretty good.

Great. It's a great VPN service for privacy and security, and the free service Proton offers is great for those who can't afford a subscription. I use VPNs for streaming block US and UK content and I found I couldn't watch a few services compared to another provider I use. I couldn't even watch CNN, which I use on my apple TV and iPhone regularly. I hope more streaming services are unblocked in the future.

great performer. Proton vpn has been the best performer for me compared to other services i’ve used in the past. The malware, tracker and ad blocker is a nice feature to have as well, although this vpn costs twice as much as other services in my currency australian dollar which needed to be converted to euros as it is based in switzerland.

Terrible.. Upon download the app worked fine, although as you use it more it depletes to the point where it drops out every 5 minutes. And I’ve only been using it for 2 days. Honestly this app is crappy but oh well it’s free so maybe that’s their excuse.

Great VPN. I’ve been using ProtonVPN for years now (on the free option), mainly to watch anime on browser since all of the good anime websites are banned in Australia. I haven’t had any significant issues, only issues i have had is that the connection sometimes goes bad, when it’s happens i just disconnect and reconnect. It can also get annoying if you haven’t used the VPN for a while it automatically logs you out. I recommend this VPN to everyone if they are using it for browser, i’ve never used it for netflix so i’m not sure if it works on that.

Only VPN I trust. Very transparent with policies, easy to read, just something I wish more companies did. Love what you guys do, keep it up!!!

Perfect!. Have been using it for a couple of weeks now and it works perfect! So much better than my previous vpn which seemed to have a lot of dropouts and slow downs especially on overseas servers. Proton VPN works fast all the time for all the countries i have tried.

Stable, reliable and fast.. Been with other VPN providers before and I’ve got to say ProtonVPN is the best. The connection is stable, reliable and fast. Support is very helpful and prompt. Not surprising I guess as it’s the same people behind Protonmail. One thing I do find lacking though is the lack of port forwarding on their P2P servers. It does cripple speeds for P2P not having that feature. Another feature I’d like to see is a network management feature like what they have with other VPN providers. So you can trust a particular WiFi network and the VPN won’t connect via that trusted network. Also I’d like to see a non command line based client for Linux. A GUI based client would be much better. Hope the above mentioned features will be implemented soon.

Excellent App. Working flawlessly so far. No dropouts, auto reconnect when switching from 4G to WiFi is seamless with kill switch. Lots of servers. Much better experience than OpenVPN. I’ve been using the desktop app for a while now which is great, thanks for adding native iOS support!

Always-on feature - what were you thinking?. I love Proton services. Until this always - on that you can’t turn off. Not everyone needs VPN that reconnects after restart or net connection loss. The switch to turn the feature off is there in Settings but in disabled state. I lost so many hours and jobs because of it. Every time I tell myself - I will remember to turn off, yet I forget. VPN product should not punish people for forgetting to turn it off. Maybe writing this review will train my memory. Have they tested it in real world scenarios ? On iPhone where iOS VPN badge is hidden behind the notch and there’s no way to tell that it’s connected VPN. And arrogance in which this is presented, “we know better what you need so we will not allow you to turn it off”.

Easy to use, app for iOS and for computer. I came to Proton after a bad experience with another VPN that slowed my system down to a crawl. Proton doesn’t do that and I like that they have free VPN as well as a subscription version at various price points. I have the cheapest subscription but they offer a lot of really good things even to those of us in the cheap seats like me, like free email addresses and storage. Also it’s super simple to use on any device. Very happy with Proton.

The Apps great. I also use the free service on my desktop and love it especially because you can access Netflix shows from other countries Cheers

Greatest VPN ever. All I have to say is this is simply the BEST VPN u can find out here and the best thing is it’s almost completely free and easy to use.

Great app!. Proton is very easy to use and understand. I love how easy it is to customize privacy settings, and I definitely love how it allows me to access different streaming services from different countries. I recommend it highly.

Used to be the best free vpn. Now it’s hot garbage. The “update” removed the most basic function of choosing which country you want to connect to (previous 3 options). You either pay for that feature back now or just use a better vpn app. Skip this. Another thing lost to corpo greed.

From hero to villain. This VPN used to be the perfect option for anyone who wanted a reliable, fast and unlimited VPN. The choice to make the option to select specific countries despite their servers being free locked behind a paywall has caused me to switch VPNs. Never again will I recommend this app

Very slow. Slow app loading takes forever

Fonctionne super mal. Difficulté à se branché après plusieurs mois installé sur mon iPad Je n’ai jamais réussi à me connecter sur d’autres appareil avec mon profile j’ai un abonnement d’un an Je me cherche un nouveau VPN plus facile d’usage

Awful. Don’t waste your time on this so called free service. They won’t let me put 0 stars so I have to put 1

THE BEST. Proton VPN is the best ever, as well as all of their other products (I really recommend Proton mail as well). This company is unique by its transparency and genuine commitment to offer the best for their customers data privacy. They don’t lie to you as others VPN companies (like Atlas VPN, which says it protects your privacy but is collaborating with the US government and will give them your information) Proton is honest, transparent and the most secured (I agree it might be an overkill for some people who just want to stream shows that are blocked in their country. But if you really care about protecting your privacy online and the right for a free internet access, look no further, Proton VPN is the best)

Used to be great. After the new update the free capabilities are greatly reduced… sadly will be uninstalling

Great VPN. Hoping to see an iOS 17 version for the Apple TV!!

Doesn’t Connect. Since the last several updates. The VPN doesn’t work because it’s doesn’t connect on iPad OS. Hopefully it works again soon.

overall nice. pretty good, does it work in china?

connection not stable. it always disconnects, i have to reconnect every 3 minutes and it's so frustrating, it cannot stay stable for even a few minutes

Très bon. Très bon vpn, j'enlève une étoile car desfois ça prend beaucoup de temps se connecter à celui-ci

👍. I was looking for a free VPN and this provides a pretty nice one, very nice.

Finally. I was waiting for that

Ensh*ttification complete. 👍

Problem. Since i have been using this vpn, google have required me to do acaptcha verification every time I want to search something. Can you help?

Pretty much the only truly free VPN. The apps are free and open-source. Very easy to sign up. The free server speeds are slow sometimes, but it is to be expected. I would give 5 stars if the Canada server was free.

Best VPN I’ve used, but stagnant app. I have tried ExpressVPN, and used Encrypted.me and Nord for years each. Proton is by far the winner. It is more reliable, less buggy, and the most invisible: I almost never have a website that misbehaves when on the VPN, whereas with Nord I constantly had to disable it to get sites to work. The only downside is the lack of user-facing app development. Customer service is friendly and responsive, but I have unfortunately reported many bugs that remain unfixed for years despite customer support acknowledging that they are known issues. And you can forget feature requests, no matter how simple. It isn’t worth taking the time to write them up, as they get even lower priority than the bugs that stay around update after update.

No longer free. With the Free plan changes, you aim to provide frustration to everyone using your free, unlimited, ad-free VPN. That said, although you can't make more money by forcing us to pay for specific servers as a free user, you can always change your policy that was initially assigned to us. To connect to a server of your choice, please don’t force us to upgrade our pla. On another note, keep in mind that once you've offered the feature to connect to a Proton VPN server of our choice for free, your users will not be happy to pay for that service now. Therefore, the services you offer on the internet for free should stay free and not become another income stream. You’re free users will abandon you, not start paying.

Love it. Works well and is free! Would highly recommend!

Best bundle for internet users. See above

Not free anymore. It used to let me use the three free locations and save the ones that would actually work but now i have to pay for it? Unbelievable

Lacks Features. - Doesn’t have vpn for Apple TV. - Doesn’t have Island notification as PIA VPN does when connected to a server. - Reasonable price

Always there 5 Stars. When I can’t get somewhere, change things up and it always gets me there.

Good. Good

Custom DNS like iVPN does ? (2023). Is ProtonVPN planning to allow for custom dns settings like iVPN does ? I use NextDNS with firewall and blocking settings that I would like to use with my ProtonVPN account. Is there any plans for this ?

thank you. just a question, does it block internet provider from seeing logs?

Needs a Widget. The VPN works well and speeds are good, but this needs a home screen widget to make turning the VPN on/off and seeing the current connection easy without opening the app!

Bring back server selection please. Awesome experience so far, but please bring back server selection.

Great service. Reputable company, reliable speeds on paid plans (never tried free).

Works fine. Prices are great and if you can’t afford to buy a plan they have a free plan :)

enough w the copy/paste big company responses. ever since they updated the app, im always automatically connected to the netherlands which literally never works, and if i want to switch to the us i have to wait a minute and a half to change it again, so if that server doesn't work/disconnects, i'm back to the netherlands and have to wait for a timer. this was literally perfect a week ago, and now this app is terrible. i don't care how expensive it is to operate, if you're going to limit stuff at least don't make your app insufferable because even if i were to consider paying for it before, i definitely won't now.

Recent Update Downgrade!. This was a fabulous VPN service for free but a recent update now takes away the 3 country choice that was available for free and now forced you through Netherlands. Unfortunately I need a VPN in US so this is no longer an option unless you upgrade for $200 per year. No thanks!

Poor. it doesn't work on netflix

Not for me but still recommended. I wanted to love this vpn so much because I love Proton mail and pass. They are incredible. PVPN works well on my MacBook but on my iphone I had to delete it. It would be fine if you wanted to have it on all the time but I only need it on rare occasions and there is no way to turn it off. I even tried turning vpn off in the phone settings but it would automatically come back on again. So sadly without this possibility it’s not practical for me on the phone but I still recommend it to anyone who wants a VPN on all the time. I love Proton products

Top Notch - Very Few Glitches. This is certainly an excellent product and service. Would recommend for anyone with personal - and even professional - privacy concerns. I’ve had a few user-related issues getting to know how to use it, but this part of my personal learning curve. I wish KillSwitch could be used on my iPhone (a feature on the mac). I am not keen on network vulnerability when my phone disconnects from a wifi signal and needs to use a cellular signal instead. Overall, I offer 5-Stars as I'm sure it must be increasingly complicated to create a truly secure connection in a world of increasing privacy intrusion. Thank you for creating this excellent solution, as well as all the Proton products that I use as well.

Great VPN service. Best vpn i ever use.

Good, but not too good. It’s absolutely goated at everything except protecting Netflix my account got hacked five minutes in

Good and bad. It works great on my iPad Pro. On my iPhone 14 Pro Max it makes it impossible to use my banking app. Deleting the app makes my banking app work again. However, just turning off Proton VPN did not solve the problem. I’m hoping the update will solve that problem. I tried to use the app help link on the Proton VPN page on the App Store but I could not find any way to access any help there. This app used to work well on my iPad Pro but since the latest update It prevents me from getting online. Deleting the Proton VPN app solves the problem. I hope this issue is fixed soon.

The app is a fraud. I bought it 4 days ago with 160 dollars payment but it never worked. I claimed a refund but the developer of this VPN refused.

Бесполезная программа. Свои функции не выполняет. Ни одного стабильного соединения не установлено. В сотовых сетях не соединяет вообще. Проверено на разных моделях iPhone. Эффект нулевой. Doesn't perform its functions. Not a single stable connection has been established. Doesn't connect on cellular networks at all. Tested on different iPhone models. The effect is zero.

Protonvpn. Awesome free VPN with no DNS leaks has extra firewall also

Pays-bas don't work. I only have pays-bas😢 and pays-bas doesn't work

It works very well.. Awesome service and services. Privacy is important and should be more universally protected and respected. Bravo, ProtonVPN!

Great…when it works. When you leave wifi and transition to data (eg leaving home and getting into the car) the app just stops working. It keeps stuck at “loading connection info” . I close and restart the app, turn off and on data, but nothing works. And the Internet also stops working. I have to restart my phone for it to work. It’s really annoying.

New update sucks. This new update you posted is terrible the proton vpn was perfect for everything before but now I can only use one server and it’s the Netherlands and the Netherlands doesn’t even work

Dommage

Connection drop outs. Despite being connected, at random times my internet will stop working and the Proton VPN app will be at “connecting” on which I’ll have to disconnect then connect again to establish a new connection. Or sometimes the connection will just become way too slow and unusable that I’ll have to again disconnect then reconnect again. It’s not just happening for me, I know others the same issue is happening to, and reinstalling the app and restarting my device has done nothing. I can no longer trust ProtonVPN until this issue is fixed.

Appreciate the team. I appreciate for increasing the number of free ports. If I was able I would support you financially but I’m not able right now. Thank you for your great helps for freedom.

High-maintenance, waste-of-time app. This was a great VPN service way back when the user base was small and the Proton corporation was actively improving and growing it. On a Basic plan, many of their servers are constantly at/near capacity, or under maintenance. And despite speed being one of their early selling points, many of their servers barely move at all now. As other reviews mention, the VPN connection is pretty fragile. Good luck connecting if your device has been locked/sleeping for more than a few minutes; I normally have to fiddle with the ProtonVPN app and my Settings app to make it connect, or else it will remain in an infinite loop of attempting to connect. Need to unlock your phone and immediately access online info like transit times or weather? Too bad with ProtonVPN. I have reached out to support numerous times regarding these issues and all they ever do is blame iOS/my device and give me busy work that maybe solves these problems for a day or two, before they re-appear again. Find yourself a stable VPN run by a company who reinvests in their product. ProtonVPN doesn’t appear to be it.

Current version takes 5 mins to OPEN the app. Ever since I last updated a few weeks ago, the app now at unpredictable times will take 5 minutes to just OPEN the app, so I can disconnect the vpn. (Disconnecting directly through system settings holds for only a second before it automatically reconnects, which imo is another huge problem - if your app is closed, it shouldn’t be able to force a reconnection.) what’s worse, is somehow it then asks me to login again… why are you automatically connecting me to servers if you’re not allowing me in the app to select server and/or disconnect? It’s absurd I have to wait 5 minutes for the app to log me out and then make me login just to disconnect from a problematic server.

Was previously great, now not so much.. I used to use Proton’s services daily, but now i’m looking for other means of maintaining my privacy. The known disconnecting issue caused by IOS is one thing, but now the app refuses to open altogether. Also, even when it used to open, it would take an eternity to connect, to no fault of my ISP because it used to only be a few seconds at most. It’s a shame; because i loved this service enough to buy into multiple year subscriptions, and even to begin switching to proton mail which now has its own slew of problems, for the last few years. Now, I’m completely regretting my decision.

Do not get it. Listen if your trying to get Harry Potter or any movie on Netflix, DO NOT use this app. It will ask you to pay a trial, and when you do delete it it will NOT give you your money back. Another reason is because while I was reading most of the reviews, I saw that most of them said that when you let it on to your settings it’s on their for good. Even when you delete the app it will still be there, you’ll have to delete the software. If you want to watch something that’s not on the US Netflix, I recommend using other VPN apps. They are probably much safer. Right when I downloaded the app I went straight to the reviews, and saw that once you delete it, it will STAY on your phone. So I deleted it right away. Stay safe y’all. -Isabella

Can’t choose free server locations anymore. This used to be the best free VPN app on iOS. With the free plan, you used to be able to choose from several server locations/cities in the United States. Not anymore. Now the server is chosen for you automatically and you can’t pick the location you want. You must upgrade to a paid plan to be able to choose specific server locations even from among the “free” servers. Ridiculous. I’m sorry but that’s a bit too greedy IMO. There are other reputable VPN options out there either free or paid (cheaper than Proton) that will do the job, and no I’m not referring to the free ones that harvest and sell your usage data. Another free service crippled because either the company got greedy or couldn’t figure out that they’d sell a ton more paid plans by making them more price competitive.

Good fast VPN but lacks key feature. Good and fast vpn, always on connection but frustrating when you can’t disable it on cellular connection which blocks apps sometimes from working. You have to keep in mind to disable it and when traveling you have to remember to keep turning it on when previous wifi connections are rejoined. For example, difficult to track as Uber app wasn’t working with VPN on with cellular, and worked after turning it off. Then, forgetting to turn it on during hotel wifi rejoins because there is no VPN always on wifi option like Nord VPN. Miss that important feature on Proton for convenience especially when traveling. Otherwise, simple and reliable app.

Great vpn but some issues. This is a great vpn. There are some issues though when I would disconnect my WiFi would go very slow and sometimes not even work. Also when I would have it on and go to watch a streaming service I would have to disconnect to watch it or it would say “not available in your region”. Other than those 2 minor issues this is my favorite vpn it stays connected for a long time I would have gave it 5 stars expect for the minor inconvenience but other than that like I said this is a great vpn 👍

One major flaw. I love it for the most part but one major flaw makes me question whether to keep using it. This is not a one off occurrence and has happened many times, but Proton VPN essentially blocks all WiFi connections and the app cannot get past the load screen. This means I cannot turn off the VPN and is presumably continually trying to connect. Turning off the phone doesn't work, VPN from the Settings, and eventually have to delete the app and reinstall to fix it. I've had to do this enough times that I'm considering purchasing an extra VPN on top of my Proton subscription.

Not good. Constantly disconnects and the only way you’ll know is everything starts timing out on your phone. There’s no notification from the vpn to tell you it’s having trouble. Also the devs want to use their own system to subscribe to their service but it has tons of issues. Like telling me my subscription is good until November 2021 but then blocking access for non-payment. Then the system would only let me reup through a secondary email I have with proton so now I lost access to what was my main email address. If your payment system has issues just bite the bullet and use Apples service. It’s convenient for the customer and actually works.

Very fantastic.. I was looking for a VPN to cloud game with Geforce Now since it is not supported in my country. The one I use decreases my internet speed so a lot of lag. But I gave Proton a try and man, its so awesome. The speed difference wasn’t that much as compared to without a VPN and the cloud gaming via Geforce Now worked well woth some minor slowdowns which are few and far between. I really enjoyed playing Loopmancer just to give the game streaming a go and very well done. I love the service.

Great overall but should have phone support.. Absolutely the BEST VPN ! Love this app. Only one thing could be improved on. While support is VERY helpful, it’s only by email. They get back to you within 48 hours, usually 24. I believe they really should have help by phone (preferably) or at least by online chat. It’s very difficult to troubleshoot a problem you cannot see. If the advice isn’t working, it’s a day or two gone by. Another day or two for further help. The people advising are very good but it would be better if it could be done in a more timely manner.

Great app and service, but many sites reject or stumble the VPN. Proton’s app and service are really great. It is well designed, rock solid, and easy to use. The few interactions I’ve had with support I’ve been superb. I noticed a substantial reduction in spam and phishing email since I started using it. However, many of the sites that I frequently use either will not connect or take a very long time to connect when the VPN is running. I’m willing to grudgingly accept this trade off, but I’m sure the other users in my group would not.

Understand what you’re getting. I really love this company and what they stand for. Truly. They’ve always been aggressive on security and privacy, so I am a fan 1000%. I’m just sharing my experience about the vpn and trying to help us all be safer. I do use the paid version, too. The dropping / reconnecting gets tiring. Living in the US, connecting to servers here can take longer or hang while connecting to servers outside the US happens faster. (Maybe it’s because I live in a major city?) Having used a couple of different vpns, my experience is that even if you try to mask yourself as being in another country to watch their TV etc, they still know you’re coming in on a vpn and block you. The harsh part: Tor Browser is easier and works better for general stuff (not streaming etc.) It’s probably better at protecting your privacy, too. The speeds on Tor have increased. And it’s free. I’m the first to admit I may be using it incorrectly, and if I am, I apologize. The other Proton products are still AMAZING. Please keep at it!

Malfunction. The biggest issues that I have had are not having the ability to turn it off—-it literally pops right back on when I slide it off. This is very frustrating, especially since my other issue is that it created an issue with my internet provider and stopped my service until I cleared it up. I had to finally remove the app in order to disable it, which I should have been able to do in settings by simply sliding the button off. This needs to be fixed. Also, wayyyyy too many pop ups on accepting privacy policies.

Great app, but drains battery. I was excited when I heard Proton was coming out with a VPN product. I have their mail app, and I really love their mission. It’s rare to see a tech company acting ethically these days, but Proton seems like one of the good ones. I would love to give this a 5-star rating, but two things held me back: (1) as others have noted, there seems to be a disconnect issue when first unlocking your phone, and (2) this app drains my iPhone 8’s battery. Last time I checked, it used about the same amount of energy as the iMessages app, which is kind of a lot. I know it’s a new product so I expected some kinks, but hopefully these can be improved.

Not real happy. Not real happy. Have to click several times, every time for it to connect or change locations. Very slow. Sometime have to totally close and reopen. For years my state, in my country was available, but now it does show. Many of the locations are now on lists and either bog with, I have to make sure your human or won’t load at all. Then you have to try several different countries, which are usual slow to connect as stated above. First year I was happy worked well now, not so much. Pretty sure bought out by cia or doj now lol. Something happened. Connections are fairly fast for vpn. Not the worst, but definitely not great or probably the best. Might change next year, when ever it comes up sorry guys but truth.

Did the developers test this in the real world?. Every public WiFi AP requires the guest user to pull up a logon page and hit “agree” for access. ProtonVPN frustrated and obstructs this process to the point that I can only conclude their way of protecting you is to keep you off the public WiFi in the first place. About 20% of the time it works and I get the logon page. Minimally I’d be able to turn off ProtonVPN, summon up the access page, and turn ProtonVPN back on when I get access. The developers instead treat me like a child and force the connection on all the time in the name of protecting me, because obviously I’m too ignorant to use technology properly. This is such a fundamental failure that I have no choice but to give them an F.

Please Bring Back iOS 12 and above Compatibility. Please guy, you literally had iOS 12 on there this morning or I believe yesterday and you guys upgraded it and we’ve lost the capability of using the VPN on iOS 12. We please ask you bring it back so it’s compatible with iOS 12 and above, we were finally able to reach our family members overseas with your VPN and now that you’ve upgraded it to iOS 14 and above we can no longer reach them or use your VPN ! It this was the only VPN that was working. Please please bring it back 🙏🏽🙏🏽 we beg of you

Continue to be impressed by quality and customer service. Experienced a bug after the iOS 13 update, but since has been fixed. Developer response was fast and reflected their care for customers. Protonmail and Proton VPN are each the best offerings on the market - I’ve paid for multi year usage and will never look back. (Protonmail continues to exceed expectations!!) It’s been a fun experience watching a company develop a ground breaking product while adhering to their vision - and managing customer expectations. Looking forward to the ongoing features’ rollout.

Vast Improvement, 5 Stars. I am creating this follow up review to convey my supreme satisfaction with Proton VPN. Prior to the updates, the service was excellent, but performance left much to be desired with constant disconnections on IOS. Now, since the last couple of updates, as an IT Professional of 12 years, I am elated with this service. The quality of service is excellent, and with Proton VPN not falling under the umbrella of the dubious Kape Technologies acquisitions, like Private Internet Access & Express VPN did, Proton VPN is simply the best, safest, and most trustworthy VPN to be had right now. Great job, Proton!

No longer works.. I cannot run the app any longer. It crashes immediately when it’s launched. I checked, and it looks like it requires an update. I cannot update my iOS, so I’m stuck. When I select the button, it asks if I want to update to the latest version that will run with my iOS. I try to do that, and it won’t update. It just pops up with the same message asking if I want to update to the latest version that will run with my iOS. It is stuck in an infinite loop, and the proton VPN is now useless. Is there a fix around this? If I can get this app to run again, I’ll come back and update my rating.

Trying this out. Just installed the free version to try the VPN. At first some websites timed out. Read the docs to find out option to use OpenVPN protocol instead of default protocol. Once that was set and I configured a profile to pick the fastest vpn server connection, everything worked fine. Install instructions noting selection of OpenVPN if default protocol did not work would be helpful. Using OpenVPN was discussed in the docs, but I needed to search connection issues in docs to find it; it was not part of the onboarding installation instructions. I have not noticed any speed reduction yet - still testing. Currently using with 4G cellular data, not WiFi.

As Promised!. As I stated in my original post, I would update my review when re-connectivity issues were fixed, and they are!! Big thanks to the team for their quick response and fix. Original Review: I love ProtonVPN it’s great! But reconnecting is soooooo bad. It’s a whole 2 minute ordeal just to try to reconnect to a faster server. I have to kill WiFi and Cellular just to increase my odds. Even then it’s a toss up. On PC it’s instant every time. Please focus on this issue! I will keep updating my 1 star review on every update til it’s fixed

This company is doing good. Proton is part of the reclamation of humanity. The mail app is not ad or spyware supported and they do not sell data. Below is my review for the mail (it stands just the same, for their VPN): We are all worth more than the ‘free’ services we get from all the giants. These platforms aren’t free, they make a killing selling your data and then still have the gal to manipulate the platform and force ads down your throat. Wake up and stop supporting your own enslavement. Yes, this app is free, but they don’t sell you out. Support them if you can. If you can’t, it’s all good, you’re still supporting freedom. You are important, humanity.

Thank you proton. , you are like a magical architect who built a high tower for people who want to obtain free information deep in the closed castle. You broke through the network firewall blockade of the castle and your security commitment allows us to be free from fear. to see more authentic information from the free world, and at the same time this will supplement the deceived and misled worldview and values of the people in the castle. Thank you proton company and your staff. Your products are expected to be free for those authoritarian countries in the world. They are extremely important and help more people see the real world. Thank you.

App version 4.2.2 blocks Wifi on iPhone. Version 4.2.2 started blocking my Wifi on iPhone 8+ using iOS 16.5.1 on June 28, 2023. I have 2 different Wifi services and neither works now. I tried 2 Secure Core servers and 2 other servers and none will work with Wifi. UPDATE: The problem is specific to the phone & iOS 16.5.1. My iPad Pro runs on iPadOS 16.5.1 and ProtonVPN does not have any problems with both Wifi services on the iPad. Note that the iPhone has cellular service, too, but the iPad uses only Wifi; I don’t know if that’s part of the problem, but it is a difference that might help you diagnose the situation. ( I have 25+ years experience in IT, so I try to provide as many details that might be relevant as feasible.)

Does not work much anymore..... I’ve been a subscribed user of NordVPN and ExpressVPN in the past. ProtonVPN used to be pretty good. Now, almost every server in my area is clogged and connection is almost always spotty. When connecting to other countries/states it’s still ridiculously slow or disconnecting whenever it likes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked up at my desktop menu bar in horror thinking that the VPN had been connected the whole time. Lately, it’s doing the weirdest thing. I see that I have a connection only to minimize the main window to see the “connecting” window still trying to connect. Am I connected or not? I adore Proton’s email service, however the VPN service is tanking quickly and with each update things only seem to get worse.

Good at first. I got this VPN yesterday so I could go on Netflix and watch in other countries last night I logged into India just fine and watch for about an 1 1/2 before going to bed this morning I finished the movie I was watching just fine but then I logged into Canada then realized that what I wanted to watch was not in on Canada either so I logged out of Canada but when I went to try a new country my Netflix was stuck in Canada I hope that they fix this idk why it did this I don’t live in Canada so idk why it’s stuck there but I hope they fix it Update I have now redownloaded it hoping that would solve the problem but now I can’t even watch in Canada but I still see Canadian titles and not American titles

Constant Connection Drops. The VPN application has become unstable/unreliable a few OS updates prior. The VPN connection will constantly and silently disconnect. Luckily, I have kill switch enabled to prevent traffic from traversing the normal connection path; otherwise, I would be unaware of the issue and completely unprotected! This needs to be fixed and properly tested ASAP! Previous release notes indicate a fix related to connectivity - apparently, the issue may still persist. This is not while the phone is inactive, this is while actively using the phone to browse. I manually re-enable the session only for it to silently disconnect 5 minutes later during active use.

Thank you ProtonVPN. When we were on lockdown, I had time to do a great deal of reading on VPNs and ProtonVPN was my pick. I dropped a leading company that offered a paid VPN to switch to ProtonVPN. I didn’t want a VPN that was in a Five Eyes country and one that would allow me to easily set up different profiles for different situations. ProtonVPN checked all the boxes. As with any purchase do your research. Don’t read just one article. Read as many as you can from different sources. Be an informed consumer.

DO NOT USE. This company is extremely scummy. Do not use. They flagged my family (me, my brother, and my father) as violating the tos because you cannot operate multiple accounts under a single person. Well we are three people who have the same last name. They absolutely refuse to admit their mistake, and will not reinstate our accounts, and can provide 0 actual evidence of our “violation” despite knowing and admitting we are separate individuals. Do not use if you value being able to actually use their services. As a side note, the customer service reps are awful, just awful. Unprofessional, unable to answer simple questions, unable to provide any explanation. Go anywhere else.

One killer issue. So I have been using this VPN for a couple weeks, and I can say it’s been fantastic. They don’t sell your data, very secure, and makes upgrading feel like a bonus but not completely necessary. However, I have one major issue, which is that it takes a while to connect to the WiFi at my school, and when it does, it doesn’t work. My school WiFi is heavily restricted, and I thought using this VPN would bypass that, but I guess not. Wonderful VPN for most uses, but it will likely not work on WiFi that heavily restricts your usage. Developers, if there is something I can do to fix this, please let me know.

Great VPN after ironing out the kink. Update: My original review was one star. But once I figured out how the VPN works, it’s been pretty easy and consistent. I don’t know how some other reviewers gave it 5 stars. This is a useless VPN. Since I had been paying the VPN price for last one year, I thought I’d give t a try. None of the apps worked when the vpn was on; even the web browsers wouldn’t load. Worse, every time I manually turned the VPN off, it would turn itself back on immediately! Cannot even come within a mile of ExpressVPN in terms of ease of use and user friendliness.

Hit and miss. I’ve had a few issues with proton VPN. Not enough to fully switch but enough to start shopping. Sometimes the app won’t load on my phone. The kill switch function allows leaking. The connection is remarkably slow, and sometimes I cannot even connect without resetting the app and restarting the computer. The UX really needs to improve UPDATE for developer: no I don’t have more details. You should be able to fix this in the background. It happens with every server, no matter where I am. Whenever I join an airport Wi-Fi, I see emails updating without a vpn tunnel even though kill switch is on. I don’t use firewall or antivirus. Please improve the performance

One of the worst experience. I bought proton VPN paying a 2 year subscription. 3 months in I started facing a lot of issues for a week or two and tried to work with the customer service. VPN was unstable on all my devices and customer service was so slow that they used to email me once a day. After struggling for 6 weeks and getting to no solution - I got rid of the app and switched to another VPN. Recommend you to not buy this VPN- the worst customer service and no value to customers. I usually don’t rant but I can’t believe I wasted 150$ on these people.

Unreliable connections. I’m a long time paid ProtonMail user and finally added their VPN service to my account. I regret this. The connection drops constantly and I have to open the app and force disconnect/reconnect many times per day. It also seems to only keep WiFi connected when screen is on. As soon as I lock my phone it kicks back to cell data. This is really irritating as every time I pick up phone it’s reconnecting back to WiFi and things won’t load. NetGuard feature is neat though, +1 star. Back to TorGuard for me.

Wont log in. Update: App is working fine now thankfully. I tried the tips that applied to me and they didn’t help. The message I kept receiving after attempting to log in was that I hadn’t visited in a while and needed to login. Each time I received that message I also received an email saying there was a login. Original: Can’t use app anymore. I’ve shutdown phone, updated phone software, removed and reinstalled…I get an email saying I logged in but the app won’t actually log in. I’m an annual subscriber so this is very frustrating.

The unfortunate decline of Proton. Proton seems to be on a mission to replicate Google products with all of its recent reskinned, relaunched products, under a guise of privacy first, presumably to attract the premium price. A longtime and paying Proton user, I reluctantly updated the VPN app after updating Mail weeks ago, and reader I regret my decision. This new, dark gray and white on purple and black is not only harder to read than its predecessor, but also works as well about 25% less of the time. Growing tired quickly with Proton's recent decisions and have found myself searching for alternatives to move my SMB mail services to as, overall, the company seems to be sacrificing reliability (VPN constantly won't connect or hangs in connection and then requires a Wifi on/off toggle) for sophomoric design and color schemes. Bonus: Good luck getting through to customer service. It's been months since I've received anything but an impersonal canned response from their KB while reporting numerous issues with their refresh.

Battery Eater?. My brother turned me on to Proton as he has been a loyal customer for years. I like the app and it seems to work great without issues. No dropped connections or anything like I’m reading in the other older reviews. However, yesterday I listened to a couple 3+ hour podcasts with the VPN on all day and I noticed by supper time my battery was much lower than normal. I looked at what it was and ProtonVPN has used 30% of my battery usage for the day. I’m new to VPNs and this might be normal, but if it’s not I had to knock one star off. So if it’s a normal thing for VPNs on mobile devices, then consider this a 5 star review. If it’s not, then that’s my only complaint.

STILL The worst VPN I have ever used. 2 months and no update! They don’t give a **** about your privacy or the app. Look at every other VPN, they update daily or weekly even if things work well. This app is a garbage fire and they can’t even push out an update every 6 months. I’ve tried a lot of VPNs over the years and ProtonVPN is by far the worst. Yes, even worse than those free ones that are basically scams for your data. It never stays connected, doesn’t do anything if the server you are on is at capacity (you will be manually reconnecting many times through mout the day), killswitch randomly turns off and does not keep you from reaching the internet even when it’s on, and every single time you unlock your phone you will see it in the status bar reconnecting. Avoid it at all costs!

Fast & secure. I wanted a free VPN I could use at work since I know they maintain a record of all text traffic through their system. I mainly use my phone for texting with my wife: nothing controversial but I cherish my privacy. I’m very surprised at the speed through the service. Any VPN I’ve used previously has been very slow. I notice a slight delay, but nothing which impacts the quality of my experience. On the rare occasions when I need to look up something at home which may attract government attention, I also will turn it on.

Constant failure to reconnect. Similar issue to ‘randomuntakennickname.’ Message “ Connection Error” “ A previous VPN connection is preventing you from creating a new one. To resolve this issue, please restart your device.” This typically, and now constantly appears after a device has momentarily dropped a (reliable) WiFi connection due to screen time-out setting or other reason. Attempting to remedy the issue than restart, such as logout and re-login or even app delete and reinstall does not resolve the issue. Unwillingness to restart a device means the VPN’s ordinary functioning is rendered inoperative. _________\\\________ Edited 8-9-19 ** Changed 2-star rating to 4-Star **** It is unclear how or why this issue has resolved, but the using P-VPN with iOS 12.4 on a iPhone 7 Plus has begun reconnecting without snags again. There was no change in the WiFi networks used, which do not block or prohibit VPNs, and 4G-LTE use was not affected, although the app was deleted, then reinstalled.(Same version.) I cannot complain as a user of the free version.

VPN + AdBlocker, But They Can’t Block Their Own Ads!. What a terrible VPN. I had intermittent service issues which is probably an issue which warrants a 3/5 review in its own right. My biggest gripe is that they advertise themselves as a privacy focused VPN & market an AdBlocker which is meant to facilitate in the blocking of ads, but then they start spamming you about Proton promotions every time you log into the app on iOS and macOS. When you request that they stop marketing in their app, they respond that they have no ability to turn it off, but the ad will disappear when the the offer ends. Preventing this behavior is the exact reason I signed up & PAID for Proton VPN in the first place. I strongly recommend avoiding Proton VPN if your intention is privacy and preventing spam; they can’t even prevent their own spam!

The grass is not greener. Came from Norton using it for years. I thought proton would be more secure the Norton VPN, and it might be, but it’s a lot slower than the app is far more buggy than Norton. With Norton, I rarely ran into websites that said it blocked my IN with proton. I have constant issues with anything running with cloud flare. I’m stuck with proton for almost 2 years. In know in two years, I’ll be going back with Norton. Their updates keep breaking things the recent update now messes up with Wi-Fi trying to connect to a VPN even after closing the app it still screws up Wi-Fi where now I have to forget my Wi-Fi network and re-enter password for Proton VPN to make a secure connection through Wi-Fi.

Promising, but not there yet. All-in-all, a promising privacy tool, but my identity is getting leaked periodically. The Kill switch was showing active, but I was able to get online and search result with ads for my location. This does not always happen, but a Kill switch should be just that—kill my connection if the vpn is not connected. I took it for granted that if I was online, the vpn was active. Now I have to be more cautious. UPDATE: I’ve updated the app, have Kill switch on, and my network traffic is still not blocked when disconnected from Proton VPN. My local IP shows. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Kill switch mean all internet traffic will be blocked, i.e. I can’t get online, unless I’m connected via Proton VPN?

Best free vpn. I have been looking for a free vpn for a while and they are either have a data cap or are sketchy or have bad reviews but proton vpn seems very reputable, is private as far as my research tells me and has decent speed. I have had some times I had to disconnect the vpn on cellar data because it reduced my speeds to being almost unusable ex : 190 mbps vpn off 7 Mbps vpn on but the vpn is free and private so this is excusable. I might use the payed version in the future if the speeds are bad on data too often.

Extremely disappointing. Don’t pay for Plus. I am on iPhone and even with Proton Plus this App constantly drops my wifi connection, especially when my phone locks/is inactive but other times even when i am using my pho e. I have wasted so much time toggling my Wifi on and off, and disconnecting and reconnecting the VPN because the internet frequently stops working. What a huge waste of money. I see in the other reviews they are blaming Apple. But apparently other VPN apps can handle iPhone just fine, so this seems like just a cop out and lame excuse. This is just unacceptable, especially for a paid product. I definitely will not be renewing a subscription in the future. The only reason I am giving more than 1 star because it works decently on a laptop.

Amazing but one blunder. This app is amazing and I can’t believe it’s free but one thing I do hate is that you have to pay yearly and there’s no option for a monthly subscription. I want to watch NRK and I can’t do that outside of Norway, and you have to pay 100$ a year just to be able to access a Norwegian server. Would appreciate an option for monthly 🙃 UPDATE: Upgraded to premium with the monthly subscription as the developer note said. Thanks! 4->5 stars

Great company, apps can frustrate. Generally, I’m very happy with the proton ecosystem. Of course, their biggest value-added is privacy/security, which can also become a drawback when you have to deal with endless captchas on many sites, have your proton email flagged by companies etc. My main complaint for protonvpn from a functionality standpoint is that, as a paid user, the VPN usually quick-connects to free servers. If I’m paying for the full VPN, I don’t want to have to click out of a free server and manually enter a paid one; I want the option to filter free servers out of my default random connection. Cheers to proton, keep evolving and doing great work!

Clear interface, very reliable.. I think it’s my very first review of the iOS app, never done it before. Love the fact that Proton is giving it for a fair use and not ripping off potential customers: see it yourself and decide which features you need to pay for. I tried to find something reliable, fast and the inexpensive: I ended up with absolutely reliable app that integrates to iOS really well, I’ve got bundle Plus, and planning to move my domain to ProtonMail as well. Speed is great, even in free version it all depends from the time of a day, evenings usually more loaded and speed is slower. Love it!
