App doesn’t work. I’ve had a paid subscription for years and prior to an update in 2018 I was able to download magazines, but now I am not able to download the print version of the magazine, I can only download images. I reported this several times and it still hadn’t been fixed. Maybe the app needs to be rebuilt and/or get a new developer. This is ridiculous that Essence can’t get this fixed. I may actually cancel my subscription because I don’t understand why they can’t get it fixed when they are fully aware of it. UPDATE: as a previous reviewer stated the account # on the magazine cover is different from what’s online, so after using the online account number I found online was able to logon and download the magazine view of the magazine. The developer needs to correct the login image to show what portion of the account number users should use or tell customers to go online to get the correct acct #.

What’s going on. I have a monthly subscription, was prompted to get new APP but there is not a place to log in. I just renewed my subscription but it’s asking me to purchase the current issue? Why would I do that when the paper copy is sitting right next to me but I want to have my digital copy as I should with cost of subscription? I love ESSENCE but honestly this is a turn off! Where’s the fix? I didn’t get a renewal for my subscription-that’s another issue I guess anyways hope this is fixed soon!

Can not access all the magazines I paid for. I have been a subscriber since 2016 but never used my digital account until 2017 I tried this app on my iPad and after four emails to essence they still can not provide me with the correct way to access all my magazines via this app

No access to magazine. I get charged monthly but can’t access the magazine.

The worse magazine ever. DO NOT, AND I MEAN DO NOT RENEW YOUR SUBSCRIPTION TO THIS MAGAZINE. My subscription is until 8/21 and I still can’t download the current issue. I Don’t have the option to log off and re-log on. Take so tips from other magazines. Since this magazine was bought out, its be horrible. Clear up the stereotype!

Help with logging in. I was finally able to log in to the magazine on line. As someone stated in a previous review, I had to use a number that was different from the account number on the magazine. I found it on line when I went to customer service. I logged in with the number on the magazine. You will find another account number at the top which is only 8 numbers. Hopefully, you will find success with this process. Now if I could only get them to send my missing paper issues.

Limited app. I enjoapp is unfinished. There isn’t a sign in option for current subscribers and no recognition of previous purchases. I think it was poor judgement to release an app in this unfinished condition. I just found out today, Dec. 6, that the Essence app isn’t compatible with Apple. Dumb decision by Essence It’s December 2018; today customer service reports Essence is working to eliminate the issues with their magazine app and IOS. Management decision to launch without IOS on board, not tested and remaining silent is irresponsible. When it’s fixed, I will take time to reconsider another subscription. Reckless!!!!!

Horrible updated App!. The previous app was much better. I am unable to download the monthly magazine issues it is telling me that I cannot restore my purchases, but I have an updated subscription; then it telling me I have to pay for a subscription. This is totally unacceptable I want my old app back.

Finally Worked Read to see what i needed. Trying to help folks who have been totally frustrated with this app. After numerous back and forth emails, I’m finally able to sign in. Essence sent me an account number which appeared no where on my magazine label. It was 6 digits, not 10 (as highlighted in the sign in instruction). Try contacting them and requesting your account number. I kept at it because I love the magazine and particularly enjoy the digital version.

Terrible App.. If I could do negative 1 for a rating I would. This app is terrible. I have a two year subscription and all of my previous issues that have already paid for are gone and there is no where for me to log in to restore those issues or download the new issue without paying for it again. That is not going to happen. If I don’t get a Essence magazine in the mail I will call the company and request a refund on the year I have left and will never subscribe to Essence again.

Horrible App. I will put a one because I cannot give a zero. I have been charged every month for my issues but I have not been able to have access to them. Currently I am unable to access the App nor my issues which will require that I take time out of my day to call Apple I-tunes because I don’t have access to my account number and I am unable to log in... so frustrating !

App doesn’t work for me. Love magazine but app doesn’t work.

Frustrated with new Essence App. I have tried everything, phone call, emailing customer service, the recommended online customer service site....everything... Deleted newly downloaded app, as well as old app (which still had all my previous issues), now they’re all gone. Reinstalled new app according to online instructions and now only have 3 issues, 2 of which will not download 🙄. After hours of going from bad to worse, I am frustrated😱, not to mention disappointed😔. Was this new app even tested before launching, why fix what was not broken? Please, please, please fix this App 🙏🏾 There is no where to sign in as directed by the online customer service site. Am I clueless 😳, HELP!!!!!!

A freakin issue again!. I cannot access my December issue of my essence. What is going on? Why does this happen?

Paying and cannot download. I am going to cancel this subscription but I want a refund. I haven’t been able to download the magazine since February. This should not be happening for a reputable magazine and Apple.

Can you fix it?. This app has glitches. I can’t log in with my Apple ID and I lost the April issue I subscribed to. Even though I download for offline use it does not store it and I have to download it again. Even reading it online, it needs to be downloaded again. Annoying! Help!!

Highly Dissatisfied - App does not work. Can’t access my subscription nor send a report. Very disappointed. You get rid of a app that was working and hv us download a new app that has not & does work at all.

This app is terrible. I just downloaded my December issue. The magazine downloaded without the photos. This is ridiculous. I feel like I paid for a headache instead of a magazine. This is unacceptable and I feel like I have had my money stolen as the subscription is worthless if the app doesn’t work properly. The lack of response to complaints is also unacceptable and leads me to believe that both Essence and the Apple App Store are unscrupulous in that they continue to sell subscriptions with the full knowledge that the app does not work correctly. Customer service at its worse. Disgusting!!!

App doesn’t work. I have tried logging out, deleting & resetting. Cannot get magazines on my iPad.

Magazine is unreadable still. I thought the kinks had been worked out so I renewed my subscription in March during the quarantine. I can’t access the May issue and it’s May 8. I will never subscribe again.

Help!. I am not able to download the current magazine! I have contacted the app site and Essence both are blaming each other! I don’t have an account number so I am completely lost on what to do next. I am not able to get a refund either.

There is a wait. My current subscription was not immediately available. It took about a month to be able to download issues included in my subscription. Otherwise the magazine is great!!

Poor quality!. I renewed my subscription after hearing all the kinks and issues had been worked out. Sadly I have not been unable to view the Jan/Feb issue and it’s already mid-January and have already been charged. I will not be renewing again.

Love. Essence magazine have been apart of my family for decades.

Can’t access my account. I have not been able to access my account and of course cannot access magazines without purchase. The option is not there to sign in. How long before this is fixed?? I only subscribed for the mobile option....

Highly disappointing!!. All my previous magazines have been deleted, and now you’re asking me to pay per magazine when I have a subscription. Refund your customers and get a better strategy on how to retain any existing subscribers, or how to acquire new customers. As one fellow subscriber mentioned, at least my O magazine is still up and running even with upgrades. Highly disappointing!!

Can’t access my subscription!. Like others who have taken the time to submit a review about this app, I have 2 paid subscriptions, and can’t access the magazines! The first subscription is for the previous app that was discontinued, and the second subscription is for the new app. I’ve submitted multiple complaints about this. It’s absolutely unacceptable, unprofessional and poor customer service! Please refund me! This app does not work!!!!!

Log in trouble. The app will not let me sign in so if I didn’t have a hard copy of the magazine I would not be able to read each issue.

Bad App. You can’t download the new issue, you can’t restore your past issues and it doesn’t allow you to sign in as a already paid customer. The app wants you to purchase issues you already paid for. Please fix this app, I’m entitled to on line issues.

This sorry state app. This app is the worst. Already the previous app had robbed me of many of my past issues and now this app has taken away what was left. You can’t log in, you re being told you have no previous issues and you are being asked to pay for the September issue. This is madness. From the other reviews I see persons saying that they were literally forced to give a one star review, well please note that I give this app zero stars, zilch. Essence fix or refund us for our past issues, they belong to us, we paid for them. To add insult to injury you can’t see details of your account, there is a message saying it is unavailable but will be up on the 19th of September, today is the 23rd and the status quo remains. Really Essence!!!!! Fix this ASAP!!!! Please note that you have to rate before your message can be sent and there is no option for zero stars but even if you see one star for me please note it is not of my being.

Disgusted & Disppointed. My comments are the same as those expressed by others. I'm a multi-year subscriber on auto-renewal. My "current" app subscription was renewed to January 2019. But with the new app update all of my past issues are gone and there is no way to log in and retrieve my current subscription. So...where is my money? I paid for a 12 month subscription and that was not fulfilled as agreed. I'm also very disappointed in the lack of a response when I reported the problem.

Get it together. I am so disappointed, I have been a customer for over 5yrs and when downloading the new app as the other reviewers it has wiped my archives away. I am not able to download the new without them asking me to pay for the subscription again. I have reached out to customer service and they advised me they are no longer servicing digital customers and to reach out to Apple 😳. Ok if this is to be true Essence owe a lot of people some money. Oh and by the way Apple is not responsible but they will provide a refund.

Simply Robbed. In regards to my old comment I sincerely need itunes or the essence publishing company to refund my older digital magazines or REFUND Me my money back because if we owed any 1 of You, you would either suspend my services or request an do you so kindly return all my magazine or consider my status what actions should I Perdue. This new app an the old app have robbed my library of previous issues. Please kindly return my paid previous issues to my library or refund my money paid for previous issues. I know the problem will be fixed an my previous issues will return . Thank You. Only downloaded. Issues have remained. Where are my previous purchases ???. I am absolutely disappointed by this supposedly app upgrade. 1. Can’t download current issue 2. No access to previously paid issues 3. No sign in access 4 no way to contact customer service. I am definitely not having a new and improved reading experience. Matter of fact, I am not having a reading experience at all as as I cannot access any of my magazines. Experiencing Trouble Viewing Issue. Using the updated version of this app, I am able to load the issue, but no text or illustrations are visible using an iPad mini 4 or an iPhone SE.

Essence Magazine App. Worst app ever. Lost my previous magazines and unable to obtain new magazines for a subscription that ens April 2019. Today is January 15, 2019. I want my refund. I will not purchase Essence again. I have been a long time reader over 25 years.

Worst app ever. Digital subscribers are unable to access your online content. The online ads and/or request to allow cookies fill the entire screen. It is annoying and amateurish. This is the third time I have resubscribed after canceling because I love the idea of reading about strong, intelligent, creative, and successful WOC. I want to support but come on, do better.

This Is Not An Update, It’s A HiJack. All of my back issues that I’ve paid for are lost and I cannot even access my new magazines that are a part of my PAID SUBSCRIPTION without being prompted to purchase it. This is a horrible transition for faithful customers and I’ve received no reply to my emails. I WILL NOT BE RENEWING MY SUBSCRIPTION IF THIS IS NOT ADEQUATELY FIXED QUICKLY!

Subscription Renewal. My Subscription renewal didn’t carry over when Essence Magazine updated their app. This is unprofessional to all customers. I have subscribed to Essence’s on and off for over twenty years and consistently for the last ten. I refuse to pay again when I renewed three months ago. For that reason, I will not ever subscribe again to essence. Very bad business, fix the app problems.

Get it together Essence!. Why launch the app if it was clearly not ready for your subscribers? I can’t access my previous issue and can’t download the new issues, funny I see the debit from my checking account worked fine.... These complaints are now over 30 days old and still no answer or a fixed app, this is a sad time for Black publishing and this is an embarrassment. Awful App. Magazine does not download properly since the latest iOS update. Very limited user management. This App needs lots of improvement. Not receiving issues even though my subscription is active.

Love the magazine but. The issue is always late to come online on the app - digital version should be available at the same time as the print it’s crazy you have to wait over a week sometimes two to have access

Essence New App. I have a subscription through essence and there is no where with this new app I can sign in and get the current issue. I should not have to subscribe again through iTune. I just have to wait for my hard copy of the magazine that comes in the mail. Until this situation is fix, this app is a joke.

Disappointed and feeling robbed!!. The is Essence Mag. I am very disappointed. Clicking on the updated or new app was a total blind side move. I now don’t have my previous issues but one issue that was available I was ask to purchase. Lost previous issues. Downloaded app and lost all my older issues. It is not letting me download my current 2 issues.

Where are my issues?. Echoing all of the other feedback, I’ve downloaded the new app and now can not access my past issues or my current subscription. This is ridiculous. We shouldn’t spend a minute without the subscription we’ve paid our hard earned money for. Even when this is resolved, what additional rewards will be offered to us for the time we spent without access?

Not happy!!. I hated the previous app when it was updated. This one is worse. I paid for a two year subscription and can’t access it on the new app and the old app will not download the new issues past August. If I wanted to go back to an old issue, a message pops up in the old app prompting me to go to the new app. 😡😡

Horrible. I’ve been a loyal and avid reader and subscriber of Essence my entire life. I’m very disappointed with this app; it’s the worst ever! I paid for my subscription which included the online subscription. Since they switched apps, I am now being robbed of my online subscription😡😡😡 Fix it!!!

A possible download workaround for this crappy app. 1) click the purple check in the upper right corner. 2) if given the option to delete, press delete 3) if given the option to download, press download 4) if you did #2, go back to the check and now choose download 5) select the issue to download. When the subscription box pops up, press done. Press done over and over a thousand frigging times until the download finishes. You should then be able to read the issue. 6) to read another issue, repeat the steps. You will have to delete any downloads in order to proceed with a new download. I have canceled my iTunes subscription forever and for good. I hope you do too.

Cannot download. When will the app be fixed......I find it very frustrating not too be able to access what I paid for and I have not received my magazine in the mail........but it is available at the newsstand.....really Essence

Total App Failure. I’ve written to Essence several times about the previous version and this update is worse. I’m no longer able to sign in to the app. I’m not able to restore purchases and can’t download the current issue. I’m writing iTunes Store to get a refund. I was EXTREMELY patient with Essence Magazine.

What A Waste!. Catch up with the tech society Essence! There’s no way in 2018 that your customers shouldn’t be able to access their magazines online. I’ve installed, uninstalled and reinstalled ur app and it doesn’t work...can’t access any of my issues. I certainly hope you didn’t pay someone to work on your website. If so, you should demand a full refund!

I’d Vote 0 Stars If It Were An Option.... This new (and unnecessary) app doesn’t prompt me to login and restore my digital subscription, it asks me to pay for a new subscription. I’ll need some sort of resolution immediately or I demand a refund as I JUST renewed my subscription on the former app that was working PERFECTLY fine. This is ridiculous.

Previous Purchases. I want to know why I cannot access my previous purchases?? Yes, my subscription was partially refunded but I should be entitled to ALL my previous issues because I paid for all of them! There is no way I renew my subscription without getting those previous issues!

Patience before frustration. I’m not surprised that my subscription is not loading based on other reviews, so I’m leaving a comment so the developers know I am one of the 100% of people that is experiencing poor service. My expectation is this is being addressed and that I will be notified once everything is working appropriately. Feel free to download my previous issues without the notification though. Thank you

Totally Disappointed. I have not been able to download my back issues nor have I been able to download new issues that have been paid for with my current subscription. Trying to contact these people to remedy this situation is also an issue, I’m pretty disgusted with the situation

Not acknowledging previous subscription. Not able to sign in to my previously purchased subscription. After the app not being available for so long, I thought at least when it was re released there would be greater availability. Instead it seems to be a sales trick to have you pay again for what you already purchased.

Is This Thing On?. I too am one of the many disgruntled subscribers. I’ve tried every route to get in contact; email, Twitter, Instagram, and FB is about to be my next contact. There’s not even an editor-in-chief right now so I can’t even try to contact that person directly. It would be nice if Essence would at least acknowledge their subscribers and provide an update. Even if it’s just a blanket “we’re working on it” statement.

Worse Ever App Update. Please fix because I LOVE Essence magazine. I purchased the yearly subscription. However the full magazine doesn’t download...I’m missing the majority of the photos! This happened with October & November issues. I’m canceling my subscription until this fixed.

Can’t log in to load my paid for subscription. I have sent a complaint about not being able to log in to load my paid for subscription and have received no response. The old app was way better at this point. At least I could read my magazines.

Essence digital magazines not appearing. I have been a loyal subscriber to Essence for more than 15 years. I have downloaded this app and can not open to get September issue. This is an embarrassment to Essence! Will Cancel My Subscription. Just cancelled my subscription!! The customer service representative just told me they refunded all previous subscribers that used the previous app because it does not work on iPad! Have never heard that until today! Done with Essence! Shameful! Who is running this magazine!

What were you thinking??. 1.Restore my purchases. 2.Allow me to access my previously paid for and downloaded past issues. And if you cannot resolve either of these two simple things, you have stolen my magazine subscription dollars, and I will now view you as a common thief.

Lost my patience. Glad to see I’m not the only one with issues on this app. I haven’t been able to read the last three issues because they’re missing text and graphics. Please fix this app or bring back the old one so at least I can access my old issues. I love Essence but I’ve lost my patience with the problems. I’ve reached out to support several times and all I get is “we’re working on it”.

Can’t download past or current issues!. I am very annoyed that all of my past issues are now gone and I also can not download my current issues although I am a subscriber. This is awful! Fix this now!!!

I want my regular Essence App back. Where are my digital issues that I paid for with my subscription???? Where is the online content that used to be in the app??? Not liking this new app at all. Where is my subscription?. I have subscribed to digital and print for many years. I logged on and the screen says my subscription and past issues is no longer available thru the old app and need to load new one. Uploaded new app and now nothing is available, old issues or new. There is no way to sign in either. What is going on? Which is the access to what I have already paid for? Very frustrating.

What happened?. After resigning to the fact that ALL of my previously purchased issues weren’t coming back, I decided to purchase a new subscription. The first issue downloaded without ANY graphics, and most pages are blank! This new app is a major fail, and certainly disappointing to lovers of the magazine. We all deserve a refund!

Rip off!. I have a subscription that I now cannot access. I’m not going to buy another through iTunes when I’ve purchased directly from Essence. And all my previously purchased magazines can no longer be retrieved. New and improved equals unusable for this app.

Current Subscription Not Avaiable. Can we get on the phone with the new developer and tell them to query the user database from the old app so that people don’t lose their subscriptions from the old app. The db should be an easy fix. No need in losing subscribers over what should be a simple implementation.

Subscriber. Doesn’t recognize subscribers, wants you to pay to download new magazines. Doesn’t allow you to login as a current subscriber. Needs to be fixed. I’ve been a loyal paid subscriber for over 20 years. This app is awful! Not happy at all👎🏽

Bring back the old Essence😡. I have a subscription but cannot enter this info on the app. I have to purchase through apple subscriptions in order to see an issue on my iPad, which I use everyday for reading. To make matters worse, you can’t even see the pictures in the magazine, only words. I am just going to stick to the printed copy...at least I can depend on that!!

Canceling my subscription!!!. Very disappointed!!!!!! I tried contacting company regarding the many’s issues and no one responds. As stated by other subscribers, we we robbed of Previous issues, then they began combining two months in one issue. Now The November and December issues download with Blank pages and missing pictures.

Ditto. Where are my back issues and how can I download the current issue. I have several months left on my subscription but can’t log in to download issues. Revert back to the old app until you figure this out.

This update is terrible. I am disappointed only reason I gave it 1 star is because I had to...I can not log into my account it keeps prompting me to pay for a subscription when I am already a subscriber. Please fix this as soon as possible! I would love to read the newest issue during my commute to work. Worst app ever. Get all of us subscribers all of our old previous issues back. The new app deleted all our issues. No help from customer service. Very disappointed in Essence. Get better App developer & test before go into live production. I am not happy with Essence.

Can’t access purchased issues. In addition to losing access to previously purchased issues, I cannot access the current issue without being asked to pay for it (again). My subscription expires in 2021. This really ought to be fixed.

Disbelief. I can’t believe that I no longer can access my account. My previous magazines are gon & I can’t download the most recent one either. I don’t know what you did but you need to fix it. I love this magazine but if this is the new norm, I’m definitely canceling my subscription. Ps, I tried to give no stars.

New app. I downloaded the new app; however, I am unable to download the September issue. The only options I’m provided with is to purchase the magazine, which doesn’t make sense, because I have already paid for my subscription. The message states preparing for download, but the edition doesn’t download.

Where's my subscription. New app does not have an area to sign in and download my current subscription! Like it wants me to purchase another subscription. (App support says current subscriptions will not be available until Sept. 19, 2018 while upgrading the new app. )

I can’t restore my subscription!. I been a devoted reader of essence since I was a teenager and have a subscription until 2021 and when I try to restore my subscription on this “new” “updated” app, the app said I can’t do that. So I don’t have the convenience of reading my favorite magazine on the go on my phone I have to take the actual paper magazine with me...if I remember it 🙄...Please essence do something about this.

Still waiting for it to be fixed. Since the issue seems to be universal, it would be nice if Essence sent something to its current subscribers to let us know that a fix is on the way soon. I’ve yet to read September’s issue because it won’t download unless I pay for it again. I enjoy reading Essence and would like to be able to do so again. Soon.
