Quanta Granular Synth App Description & Overview

What is quanta granular synth app? Quanta is a six-voice granular synthesizer for iOS11+ in both standalone (with Inter-App Audio) and AudioUnit V3 formats. Quanta for iPad is fully compatible with the full version of Quanta for macOS and Windows; visit audiodamage.com for a PDF manual, audio samples, and video demonstrations.

Quanta will work on any iPad that can run iOS 11, but keep in mind that it is a feature-heavy desktop quality synthesizer, and would prefer a 2017/2018 iPad, or an iPad Pro. If you're experiencing CPU issues on lower-end machines with the standalone, try changing the main display to FEG or FLFO, which don't require redrawing and which will be significantly lower in CPU usage.

>> Multi-Format Sample Loader
Quanta can load AIFF, WAV, Broadcast WAV, FLAC, MP3, and Ogg in any sample rate, bit depth, and channel configuration.

>> Grain Engine
Up to 100 simultaneous grains per voice, of up to 1 second long, with control over grain rate, pitch, direction, shape, length, panning, source position, and level.

>> Sidecar Oscillator
Continuously variable wave shape, with pulse width modulation, and independent control over pitch (separate from grain engine.) Can be injected directly into grain engine.

>> Noise Source
Noise source features a "color" control that affects tonal characteristics of the noise. Can be injected directly into grain engine.

>> Dual Multi-Mode Filters
Filters can be used in serial or parallel modes, and include lowpass, highpass, bandpass, and notch in 2-pole and 4-pole configurations.

>> Flexible Envelope Generator (FEG) x 4
The four FEGs are arbitrary function generators, with up to 99 steps, curve and step level control, arbitrary loop points, and host tempo sync.

>> Flexible Low-Frequency Oscillator (FLFO) x 2
The pair of FLFOs utilize four controls (phase, shape, skew, and warp) to access a virtually limitless palette of waveforms, and feature host tempo sync and retrigger.

>> Sample And Hold
The S&H mod source can sample noise (random) or any of the other mod sources, at either a user-defined rate or a musical division.

>> Modulation Matrix
Every mod and MIDI source can be easily and simply assigned to any destination using the quick-access bi-polar modulation matrix. Touch a destination on the UI and the matrix automatically scrolls to the correct row.

>> Tuning Tables And Global Tuning Offset
Re-tune Quanta to new intonations and temperaments using the open-source and easy-to-use TUN file format. A global tuning offset (default to A=440) allows you to easily retune the entire synth to match a different A frequency without using a tuning table.

>> MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression)
Quanta understands both "legacy" MIDI and MPE. Use your Linnstrument, Roli controller, Haken Continuum, or Madrona Labs Soundplane (among others) to directly access per-note pressure, pitch bend, and modulation.

>> Per-Instance Settings
Quanta utilizes a per-instance customization method: set MPE mode, aftertouch smoothing, pitch bend range override, tuning table, and global tuning offset for each instance in your AUv3 host.

>> Factory Presets
Quanta comes with a substantial collection of factory content, including Designer Presets from Marcus Fisher, Joseph Fraioli, Chris Carter, and Richard Devine.

>> Cross-Platform Preset Format
Quanta utilizes an XML-based preset manager, and stores the sample within the preset for easy asset management. Work between multiple systems without troubles, make a preset on your desktop machine and paste it to the iOS version with Handoff or vice-versa, easily share your creations with your friends, or make a preset bundle to sell, no asset management required.

>> Fully Resizable Retina GUI
Quanta's vector-based GUI is resolution-agnostic, and displays the same on every system and resolution. Easily resize the UI (per instance) to match your visual needs, from postage stamp to poster-sized.

The piano keys covering control knobs. On iPad Pro 11. The on screen keyboard covers up some of the controls to where you can’t see what all is down there (grain controls). It’s driving me bonkers. Other than that, seems like a great app and good sound. Just driving me nuts not to know what else there is to adjust. I can’t stop messing with it. Edit - I’m also getting lots of crashes where the app just shuts down when trying to import samples. No audio share? Cmon guys!

Developer support non-existent. Some of the factory presets distort. No response from developer as to how to correct this distortion. There’s no indication that the app will take 3.7GB when fully installed with the developer files. Most of the factory presets sound like insects.

Can’t turn off MIDI inputs. I’m really enjoying this app so far. Really unique and fun to play. However, I've run into a little issue... I often run multiple iOS music apps simultaneously — some of which send MIDI to my computer over a network connection. In these situations, Quanta is automatically picking up the MIDI notes being transmitted on that network connection (which I don't want). In Quanta, I went into Settings > I/O Settings, and attempted to turn off all "active MIDI inputs." However, it will not allow me to uncheck any of the boxes to disable them. They just immediately re-check themsleves. Any idea why this might be happening? Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Don’t be stupid!. You know you want this. It’s ridiculously awesome. Endless possibilities. Don’t be stupid and Purchase it. Intuitive and very useful. Audio damage knocked it out of the ballpark. Beyond cool even if it doesn’t have a f_ck all button.

Functional Granular Synth. The app provides a lot of control and options for getting the most out of your samples. Being able to import samples from the Files app within Quanta is great. The ability to create complex envelopes to shape your sounds is a unique feature. Comes with lots of well designed presets. You can set the number of voices to minimize the DSP needed to create your music. Automating the exposed AU parameters adds more flavor to the mix.

Updates with expanded factory presets. As of v1.1.2. Heinbach excellence! Thanks for your continuing attention to product...

Excellent Granular Engine, Needs Better Usability. The audio engine itself is fantastic, an excellent granular synthesizer with lots of controls to dial in a sound. I feel it’s lacking some usability for iOS. Currently to use any of the samples in the factory presets in a custom preset, you need to find a preset with a sample you’d like to use, modify it, and save as a new preset. There’s no way I’ve found to use any of the factory samples in a preset made from scratch, nor can any of the factory presets have their sample swapped for that of another factory preset. It’d be very nice to have the factory samples available in a sample loading menu with a separate option to load from the iOS Files dialog, or have Quanta present its own location in Files and download the factory samples there. Secondly, it would be very nice to be able to scroll through the presets list without touching to scroll on a preset instantly loading that preset. Technically you can do this via the scrollbar on the right side, however it’s quite thin and easy to miss, and on a touch interface, scrolling by sliding over the list of presets feels much more natural. Overall it’s a good port of a really great desktop application without acknowledging the little details that would make it FEEL excellent on a touchscreen device. I do have a two feature requests. A glissando option for the keyboard (rather than pitchbend only) would be choice. Also it would be incredible if Quanta could receive and process other audio. While AUv3 imposes limitations on recording input audio, being able to use it as a granular effect on a rolling buffer of input audio would be sooooo good.

Yes!. What an update that misspelled name was killing my cpu!

Well designed and sophisticated granular sound design!. I bought it last night and like it a lot. Haven’t watched any of the demo videos at all, but was able to get going quickly making my own sounds. Import of my samples was easy and straight forward. Figured out half the app on my own without manual, tutorial or demo in less than an hour. Downloaded the factory preset samples that are all magnificent. Seeing how they were made, ie. their settings... got me another 25% more knowledgeable of the app within another half hour or so. Getting to the last 25% of depth with take a bit more time of exploring. Overall, excellent UI design and very intuitive. I wish there were a way to see what your adjustments are doing to the visual pane the has the grain/wave thing while you’re making adjustments instead of having to switch back and forth. Well designed and sophisticated granular sound design app that’s easy to figure out without too much effort. It reminds me of the high level of hardcore sound design capabilities inherent in Igor’s superb Soundscaper synth, but easier to grasp the UI. Would buy this one again in a heartbeat.

Poor synth. The synth is not that good. Really disappointed from this purchase. I bought SynthScaper LE and there is not comparison in quality and controls. I do not recommend this synth. SynthScaper is projected 10 light years in the future when compared to this one.

Please fix sample tuning!. If you use your own samples this is a pain to work with. Sample tuning has two controls. Main tuning and fine tuning and they both tune to cents! That makes absolutely no sense!

Favorite granular synth. It’s capable of so much . Thank you

A lot of fun!. Don"t know exactly what I’m doing yet but ‘Ohhh Boy!’ am I getting some incredible sounds out of Quanta! The quality seems to be there. I’ll be back later and write more.

fantastic granular synth but loading samples is borked. as in the title. bringing up import sample menu stops entire app.

Sample import broken. Sample import appears to be completely broken, which for a plug-in that relies mostly on samples, is a big deal. I’ve tested the standalone version, as well as the AUv3 version in GarageBand and Cubasis 3. In each, tapping the file import icon will cause Quanta to immediately become unresponsive. I contacted Audio Damage customer support, but never received a response. It’s a shame, because I generally like Audio Damage products. I own the VST version of Quanta and was excited to see it available for my newly purchased iPad. Hopefully this will eventually be fixed. For now, at least I can import presets that I’ve made with my VST version. Update: Sample loading is still broken on iPad OS 15.7 even after the 1.2.2 update.

No way to save my patch?. Really fun but always crashes and I lose my complex patch.

Super versatile full featured granular. A straight forward granular synth without an experimental interface and lots of modulation options. I’ve just spent a few minutes with this but can already tell it’s going to get a lot of use. ** iPad mini 2 note ** so far it is a little slow on my iPad mini 2 for instance when switching from the sample load / preset screen to the synth interface but I’m sure Audio Damage will address this as every app I have from them is solid.

Really good; unique synth. When I first got this app I thought it was great and thoroughly deserving of a solid four stars. Now that this latest update has realigned the spurving bearings though I think it definitely has to get the full five stars.

Another great synth from AD. Phosphor is still a favorite of mine, and I like what they've done here with the subtractive-granular style of synth. Fun to get lost in any samples you have. To the guy who couldn't find the presets, open the standalone, click presets and click 'Get Factory Content'. Admittedly, this is not something you normally expect to do. Still, rash to be reviewing something at a 2/5 due to an oversight on your part.

Amazing before it explodes. I’m not one typically to write reviews about an app, but I’m hoping someone will read this and it will save them from experiencing the same headache I’ve had with this app. I want to preface this by saying this synth is an AWESOME granular synth, it has great modulation built in and the sound quality is comparable to some of the $300+ plug ins they make for desktop computers. That’s not the issue with the program. The problem is stability. I’ve been using it as auv3 in BeatMaker and have experienced it crashing EVERY time I have it in a project I’m working on. To make matters worse, it doesn’t just crash BeatMaker - it corrupts whatever project I loaded it in to, leaving the project destroyed. I’ve lost weeks of work from this app, which is heartbreaking because I’ve really enjoyed it when it’s working. I really hope this is addressed in future updates because the app is unusable for me in this state, but I’m still giving it 3 stars for the things it does do.

I LOVE AuDi0 DaMaGe!?!. Phenomenally unique GRANULAR SYNTHESIS!?! Thank you for all the amazing tools you guys have given us to create musici absolutely L0VE ALL your iSH!?!

Usually I have nothing but trouble to report.... I am finally satisfied with a granular app that works and sounds good. I especially liked the email that went out this morning from Audio Damage telling me about the free Soundpacks I could get to load into the app. They sound great and I take back some of my gripes I have using your apps... just some since I still have unresolved issues with the other apps I emailed the Dev about. I highly recommend you get this app even if you are running the other granulars out there. It helps to have options and more range in your musical toolbox.

Great if it worked. I’m having the same issue as others. Trying to load a sample freezes the app.

Great synth; lots of glitches with mpe and seaboard block mode problems. Tl; dr: Fantastic synth. Glitches galore with the seaboard block. Please fix. :) — Outstanding design, sound engine, and modulation capabilities. To me, what’s easier than with most granular synths with quanta is to program melodic patches that can be played like any synth patch. So it makes it easy to take granular synthesis out of sound design/experimental territory. Another way to put the point: quanta makes melodic granular synthesis just as approachable as something like wavetable synthesis. In practice, this allows users to turn any sample into a super charged wavetable of sorts. Following the oscillator and granulation engine with filters keeps this in familiar subtractive synthesis territory. The streamlined interface also favors good synth patch design habits: once you have your sound’s building blocks, put your energies into modulation! Very nice! — As is, my issue is with the mpe support. I got the app to use with my ROLI seaboard block. Turning on the mpe mode and the pitchbend override in the settings seems to work as expected with the default/init patch. But it makes the synth behave erratically with most patches: at times ignoring new key strokes, usually ignoring any pitch bend, etc. Usually turning off the mpe mode in the settings makes the glitches go away. There are no such glitches when playing from the on screen keyboard. It’s especially striking when I hit a specific key on the seaboard, and the app visually acknowledges the stroke by lighting up the corresponding on screen key. But nothing happens. Usually, if I just hit the corresponding onscreen key directly the synth works fine. — The pichbend override often makes pitch bend completely stop working when I move to a new patch. When that happens, going to the settings and turning the override off and on again often fixes the problem. Please fix.. — The issues aren’t Bluetooth related, as the problems remain when the keyboard is connected through cables. The issues also remains when using the AU, so it’s not a problem with the standalone.

Audioshare for loading samples. Please make it possible to upload samples from audioshare thanks

Ummm... no presets/samples are included. When I saw this reviewed on the sound test room, there were a bunch of presents from well-known sounds owners as well as categories. When I download it there are none... zilch... nada and I even double checked that I was in the factory, not the user presets

Crashes with ble midi. Great app but it crashes every once in a while on my iPad Pro 2018 with my BLE MIDI connected, and lose all the work! Please fix this.

Great synth, welcome update. It is always good to see AD releasing work for mobile devices, and good as well to hear news about laptop/desktop formats. Those should not be, at this late date in computer history, separate categories. Computers are computers, and the questions are which UI, OS, and processor standards to target for a given software product. Increasingly, mobile platforms dominate actual computer use, yet tech companies insist on hamstringing mobile systems to preserve broad use of multiple platforms that are not fully compatible. Aside stated, my joy at AD embracing at least Apple mobile - and my happiness about this new update to a key granular synth for musician pads - took a blow recently when I read of the release of the developer’s latest synth. Apparently, AD feels their new synth release is too complex for PadOS. Maybe the story is more that it would be too much of a hassle to port the synth to mobile, given the low prices and high expectations in this market segment. I hope users of mobile AD products can convince the developers to stick with us and to offer us the full range of AD software. In the meantime, I’ll be tucking into this update. If you haven’t yet bought Quanta and you happen to have read this odd nonreview, you are the type of person who should just buy the synth.

No midi support. I like the app but the fact that it’s impossible to sync at least the speed or the length of grains to any incoming midi clock is surprising and kind of a deal breaker :/

Regular crashes. I’ve tried reinstalls, etc but Quanta crashes every time I try to import my own audio file. And seems to also crash when I press the grain direction button.

So good…. ….I ended up buying the desktop version as well. One of the best granular synths available, bar none.
