you get what you put in. I rarely ever leave reviews for apps. Pimsleur is legit. It has to be used consistently to see the most return. This app is very important because it is listening based, the same way you will encounter your target language in the real-world. In the real-world, you will not have captions/subtitles to read and they will speak quickly. Pimsleur gives you the chance to hear and speak. I am learning german and am at an intermediate level. I attribute my pronunciation and accent most to Pimsleur. Pimsleur is specifically good at two things; hearing crystal-clear, native speakers speak and perfecting your pronunciation and accent. A huge DISCLAIMER: pimsleur should not be used alone. If you only use pimsleur and expect it to do the heavy lifting, you will have huge gaps in your understanding. It can’t teach you everything. Use other apps, take classes, speak with native speakers, watch shows in your language, etc. Pimsleur is an amazing app that I recommend to everyone that is trying to learn a language. Use it in conjunction with other sources and you will be on your way to success!

Privacy but more effect than Duolingo!. I wanted to start learning Haitian Creole to better communicate with my boyfriends parents. At the time I had been using Duolingo & I found that it was good for vocabulary words but not so great for speaking and applying skills in everyday conversations. Any time I’d tried to practice with my boyfriend he’d say “no we would say it like this…” I had another app to supplement but it was only push and repeat words/flashcards . And it wasn’t sticking. I found Pimsleur through an ad around Christmas time. I tried the first lesson and immediately loved that I was being engaged in a realistic conversation. since it was on sale I bought the lesson pack- and completed all of them. I feel much more confident and excited to use what I learned and his mom is very pleased with how much I’ve learned to quickly! She was so surprised saying “oh you speak kreyòl now! You are Kreyòl! I am so happy” This is my first time writing a review for an app, so you can imagine I am happy with my results. I just wish there was a **level 2 Creole** available because I am ready for more! In the meantime I am going to go through the lessons a second time and more consistently. I didn’t do the lessons back to back 30 days straight, but it was still very effective. Next decent sale I will go for Japanese! It is pricey and I wish it was cheaper… but i recommend it to anyone that wants to learn! Side note: If you’re looking for a brand ambassador sign me up! Lol

Terrible customer service. I don’t understand how this company/app has such good reviews. Maybe nobody has had to deal with their customer service. Last spring I signed up for the Pimsleur premium program specifically for Arabic and canceled it after a month because I wasnt using it. Then somehow for the next 8 months I was charged for a Spanish subscription I never signed up for. I repeatedly tried to contact Pimsleur, which was a joke. I had to jump through so many hoops to get in touch with anyone, and even then the person I was talking to had no clue how to help me (it’s just a simple refund!!). After months of back and forth they finally agreed to refund me for the full 8 months. But then of course I was only refunded 6 of the 8 months. They keep telling me they will process the rest of the refund but weeks go by and nothing happens. I first subscribed last April or May 2022 and it is now almost March 2023 and I STILL HAVEN’T GOTTEN ALL MY MONEY BACK FROM THE SUBSCRIPTION THEY WRONGFULLY CHARGED ME FOR. It’s outrageous. Please save yourself a huge headache and find another way to learn a language.

Love it!!. I’ve been trying to learn Spanish for over 10 years. My husband is Hispanic, so I had picked up some just from being around him and his family, but could only understand snippets and hadn’t really felt comfortable speaking. I decided to give this app a try and I love the way the lessons are structured. I also like that the focus is on speaking and understanding as that’s what I really need. I just pop in my headphones and do my lesson while I do chores, lessons take about 30 minutes. My husband and in laws have made comments that I understand and speak way more comfortably since starting the app. It’s makes a really big difference if you actually make time every day. I personally like to repeat the lesson until I feel like I fully grasp the content, so I usually do one or 2 lessons a week. I honestly have no complains I love this app!!

Good app A+. If you want to start a language, or are in need of refreshing what you know, this Pimsleur approach is excellent. You listen to conversations, which is THE way to start! Via these conversations, and the info the commentator/instructor gives you, plus accompanying reading lessons at end of each chapter you’re going to have a good head start. I myself had a few French and Spanish beginner lessons years ago, and Pimsleur helps me remember what I forgot plus keep learning. But I started Swedish from scratch with Pimsleur, and I have to say, I’m impressed with how practical their program is for very beginners as well. I put 1 earbud in and listen when walking the dog/ playing fetch/ cleaning, etc. In my car I use CarPlay and listen. Since you don’t have to be doing the visuals most of the time, you can incorporate it with your daily activities- and make them more enjoyable plus give you a sense of accomplishment. Reviewing the Spanish helped me to be able to use it more with my patients, and the French at times as well. But I was totally surprised when I got a patient who spoke Swedish! ( here on the East Coast USA)

Almost Perfect. I’m learning Tagalog, now into my tenth lesson of the first course. Having doubled down with this app and a few other language training apps, I can tell you that you WILL learn with Pimsleur. The training seems rooted in conversations that are both relevant and easy enough to follow along. My one main gripe—and what keeps me from giving Pimsleur a full five stars—is that there is no text to accompany the feature spoken dialogue of each lesson. Supplementary text-based training modules follow the feature spoken dialogue, and it is only by then that I sometimes learn I was speaking incorrectly throughout the whole lesson. For instance, in today’s lesson—in which I learned some words for telling the time of day—I repeated the word “balang” several times. Later, in the text-based training that followed it, I learned that I SHOULD have been saying “pa lang”. “Balang” and “pa lang” sound similar enough to be confused with each other by a new learner like myself, but these are entirely different words. Text to accompany the feature dialogue training would handily prevent such confusion from happening. And, it would obviate the need to have Google translate or some similar app handy to attempt word discovery while training. Pimsleur, add text to accompany the dialogue, and I’ll give you five stars. Everyone else, if you’re seeking to learn a new language, Pimsleur should be among your top picks. Just keep my caveats in mind.

More practical than other options. I tried out this app with the cyber monday half-off one month deal and I really wish the full price was more practical for me (a student) because I have loved working with Pimsleur. Other apps on the market make you have to stay looking at your phone the whole time and this makes committing half an hour a day aside from all other tasks. I do pimsleur while cleaning, painting, cooking, or driving and it makes it so much more efficient and also more intuitive to come up with sentences while talking aloud. I used D*olingo daily for a full year and I feel as though I have made way more progress with practical applications and use of my target language with Pimsleur. My only complaint about the app is 1. Sometimes the speaker does not pause long enough to allow me to think through and say the more complex sentences and pauses way too long for one-word responses, it seems like that would be an easy fix. Also I think that the situations could be a little more interesting/fun/creative to be more practical - though maybe when I get to the higher levels this will be the case. Great app, please make a student pricing!!!

Cheap option??. While I can’t afford this app, it did provide me with a free lesson. The lesson was so good; I think that the lesson was good because it’s not a robot voice. They actually have real people showing you how to pronounce words. I think this is awesome, they also have other sections that make you remember what you learned, this makes you understand the language better.(they do work and the lessons are 30 minutes) [ you can tell that a TON of work went into this app ]. I am a high school student who wants to study abroad, this app can help a lot of people if it were free or even cheaper. Although I do understand why it would be expensive, I also understand that there are millions of people trying to lean a new language and there aren’t a lot of app that are this effusive. ( soo to the creators of this app, awesome job…but I do think this app would be more successful if the app had an option where you could learn for free; where the section gives you the same amount of lessons and maybe only the matching game). Great app if you can afford it :)

Amazing, however I wish there was more levels for Filipino. I used Pimsleur’s Filipino course back in November 2020 through January 2021 for 2 months. The concept of this app is amazing. It has you pay attention to how words are pronounced and makes you rely on how words are said rather than just a list of them, requiring more of your brain energy to process each word. The levels are definitely worth it, and the transitions between each lesson by using previously taught words as review for the beginning of each lesson helped me to recall what I previously learned. The only thing that the app lacked was the lack of levels for Filipino, in fact I noticed that there were courses that didn’t have as much levels as there were for more popular languages, such as Spanish and French that had 5 levels. Filipino only had 2. I understand that there may not be as many learners for Filipino/other lesser-used languages compared to Spanish, French, Chinese (Mandarin), German, Korean, and Japanese. However, I’m sure that learners of other languages that are using this great app would love to see more levels for the languages that aren’t as primarily sought after. Thank you so much for this app!

Phenomenal App - I feel like i’m finally learning something. This app is so perfect in that it only focuses on speaking and listening which is the most natural way that people learn languages. There’s no need to worry about reading and writing, i can feel my confidence and ability improving. I was sort of turned off by the price, but after having it for 2 weeks im blown away. I would recommend having supplemental aid if you need to read or anything but this is perfect on its own. And it also gives you access to over 50 languages, so right now im learning Chinese, Italian, Korean, and Japanese. It is astounding how much my Japanese has improved in the past week, despite me taking formal classes and lessons for over 3 years. This is the perfect prep for traveling abroad or improving your speaking and listening ability. Totally worth the price! Thank you so much developers!!

Best way to learn. I took Spanish through high school and 2 semesters in college. I still cannot speak conversationally, and the less I use it the more I forget it. As a nurse I encounter patients that only speak Spanish, and then I witness doctors insisting they do not need a translator and they could “use their 5 senses” but they cannot understand what the patient is actually telling them. Or they will not see a patient until the end of their visit in the emergency department because of the inconvenience of needing to get the translator iPad… that i have literally brought into the room. They literally just put tests in based on their complaint that is in the computer. I was appalled and I can only do so much but I know that my short time in one small southern town will not change the culture. I have wanted to learn Spanish for a long time but I never took the time. What stumped me in school was all of the conjugation. And breaking down sentences. And when I read that this is what Pimsleur says is the problem with traditional learning, that made complete sense! I typically listen to audibles and podcasts so now I just listen to Pimsleur instead and it is very natural. Driving to work, on an airplane, walking around the store, doing the dishes, cleaning the house, cooking. I can listen anywhere and I’m actually remembering new words and have started using it at work already. LOVE THIS APP. If you’re hesitant…. I’m telling you just do it.

Great language app to renew your ability. This app is GREAT if you have any prior formal training in a language. I’ve used it to recover 40-year-old German! I do think it has helped me tremendously that I can picture the words and sentences and identify the grammar rules because I once knew them. My husband, with no background in German beyond gesundheit and sauerkraut, has learned some but it is very slow going and frustrating. He brings his questions to me. I’ve dabbled with other languages that I have never studied and find it hard to determine where one word ends and another starts. They do have written support materials, but they augment rather than follow and support specific lessons. While I find them helpful, they just confuse my husband. Anyway, I give it 5 stars because it has worked beautifully for me. Highly recommend for renewing lost language ability. Not so much for novice speakers.

Great app... but some difficulties.. This app is amazing in the way it teaches you a new language! I have already completed French 1-5 and speak it fluently conversationally and I am now working on Russian. Just like in French, there were some misplaced texts/audio and mistranslations every here and there but they hardly appeared (literally only like 2, MAYBE 3 mistakes per level). However, once I reached Russian 4, the mistakes become more and more common. Some include flash cards with half the phrase missing and appearing in the next card, speakeasy conversations being mistranslated and the biggest eye sore, the speak easy text itself! For whatever reason, a lot of the text bubbles have words with no spacing, sometimes there are whole sentences with no spacing! With Russian using a whole other writing system and the words being normally longer in text AND not to mention it’s a language I don’t know and am learning, trying to read the text becomes horrendously difficult to the point that I have to resort to reading it in Latin letters which defeats the purpose of learning. Itsessentiallyliketryingtoreadthisasanenglishlearner. I still gave this app 5 stars because it’s effectiveness is nearly unparalleled and despite the setbacks, I am still learning Russian very quickly but please Pimsleur, address these problems!

Best language learning app available. I have tried all of the apps in depth, what makes this language app the most advanced is not only hearing the words constantly and in different ways with different sentences, to sharpen your comprehension skills but also its the style of practice, most other apps have tests and writing, things that don't grab your attention and at times feel like a pain. This app is like having a constant conversation with yourself, it makes breaking through mental blocks easier because it doesn’t feel like work, you can listen while you drive, lay down for bed, or just throw it on as if was a tv show. This app is truly the best when you factor that combined with the results. I learn as fast, if bot faster than any app out there, exercising half the effort and mental strain. Truly a wonderful program to any serious learner, even if you have other methods of learning, pimsleur is a fantastic compliment to any other program too, as it is such a unique method of learning mimicked by no other app, in a world of spanish apps that all seem extremely similar….

Best language learning app i’ve used!. I could not recommend using this app enough to anyone out there wanting to learn a new language. Plus they aren't limited to the big ones they have tons of smaller languages that many people wish to know. Im so glad I signed up for the monthly, each lesson is a bite sized memory lesson on pronunciation and useful phrases. Each course I believe has it’s first lesson free so if you’re not sure yet, just download the app, and check out the first course to see if the way they teach is what works for you! Personally I'm learning Icelandic and I'm having a blast while at work reciting the words and phrases. Solid course to pick for anyone desperate for any Icelandic learning tool. (I know theres next to nothing online about how to truly learn Icelandic in an audio or video format.) Please give it a go, I promise you wont regret the download! Thank you to the Pimsleur team for making such a great tool!

Maybe MP3 is Better?. Pimsleur has been one of my language learning go-tos for many years (Russian, Spanish, Romanian, Italian) But when I reported that the app freezes up when you stop and start, the helpdesk informed me that I was Doing It All Wrong and would Fail to Learn because I was stopping after the prompt in order to have more time to respond. Language learning is my hobby, so I know that everyone needs to use tools in the most effective ways for them. I slow down Pimsleur to 75% or 80% while I’m in the shower, and when I’m working directly with the program I stop the app to have time make my responses, exactly the way I patiently wait for my English students to put together new sentences. (If I didn’t do this, I would feel like a failure and lose my motivation, plus I’m not willing to listen to those lessons more than twice!) So consider downloading the MP3 and using a more flexible MP3 player that will correspond to your own language learning preferences. In the meantime, I do indeed recommend Pimsleur for starting a new language (but be sure to use other resources as well.)

BY FAR THE BEST.. I am not the kind of guy who just loves a good, juicy, book on grammar. (I’d rather go to the dentist.) I’m extremely active, travel a lot, and I communicate for a living. I go to Central America a lot and NO ONE you’re going to encounter in daily life is an expert in Spanish grammar in Central America, as is the case with English in the USA. I have had the luxury of having access to R. Stone and the Bbl app. Nope. Pimsleur? YEP. It’s different. It’s way better. It’s not a pain. I don’t get annoyed. I learn EXTREMELY QUICKLY. And it’s almost weird; I live in an area of Los Angeles where there are tons of Spanish speakers and I find myself walking around listening in on other’s conversations without even meaning to. It’s pretty fascinating. (Apparently… I am considered attractive to some in the Latin American culture… who knew... :-) I no longer need the basic stuff but you know, who wants to only know how to order a beer and where the bathrooms are in conversation? It’s nice to talk about the things that people really care about, so I’m refreshing now and will go as advanced as the course goes. I’ve had the Pimsleur audio course for years, and I have now abandoned everything else except for the Pimsleur app. It. Is. Different. Better. Do iiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!!!!

Great for what it is...could be much better.... I’ve found nothing better for learning to speak the language with basic conversation. It’s fantastic for that. But these original ‘tapes’ have not been that well adapted to modern platforms. The iPad version for example doesn’t turn sidewise. The reading lessons pdf and the verbal spoken portions don’t sync easily so there is a constant jiggling to get everything in sync..the reading lessons should be hyperlinked so you can page around and that would not be an easy change. It would be helpful also to look up what they are saying. There are many phrases which are spoken so quickly that I end up rote memorizing them without being able to parse the words. Finally, why stop at Level 5? Why not go up several more levels? And why not expand the concept into more conversations at each individual level?

Regular user. Big fan and avid user of this app as well as many other methods of acquiring a new language. Currently on level 5 of Spanish when the new voice coach feature was introduced. Up until now, I have found very few issues or concerns. The occasional typo for instance or misplaced accent mark for instance. I consider proper pronunciation paramount to the learning process and perfecting that aspect as to become as close to a native speaker as possible. The voice recognition def needs a lot of work and think it was prematurely released. I understand it’s still in beta, however it will pick up on any word spoken and mark it as correct so long as it remotely sounds like the correct spelling. It’s not taking the proper pronunciation of the Spanish alphabet into account at all, which I find less than encouraging and counter productive and otherwise goes against the excellent quality and reputation of your program.

Love the Pimsleur method!. The Pimsleur method of spaced repetition coupled with having the student predict how one might say a phrase in the target language is sheer genius. The simulated conversations and situations build competence and confidence quickly. Other methods are just too slow. I initially used the program to learn Chinese. After completing level 4 of Pimsleur, I was able to get a perfect score on the Level 2 HSK exam sponsored by the Confucius Institute and my local university. A few years ago, I was invited to give an English language seminar in Kazakhstan. Before my trip I used Pimsleur to learn Russian. I finished level 5. My very first Russian conversation upon arrival was with my taxi driver. We talked for an hour about the first Kazakh elections that had just taken place since the fall of the Soviet Union. Last year I used Pimsleur to learn Italian. While I only had time to complete level 3, I was able to converse quite well. Thank you Pimsleur!!! In the interest of full disclosure, I am a professional linguist. I teach Spanish and Portuguese. I give language seminars around the world.

The best. When I started spending several months a year in Paris, acquiring practical French speaking and comprehension skills became necessary. (I had taken a few years of French in school, but had forgotten nearly everything.) I tried all the methods and all the apps, but the one that clearly benefited me the most was Pimsleur. Other methods, especially Michel Thomas, work great, too, for broader comprehension of the language. However it is Pimsleur that taught me how to speak (and understand) the real, idiomatic French I encounter every day. Frankly, the lessons themselves can be a little boring, especially when doing them every day. Nonetheless, they are amazingly effective. Stick with it, and you’ll be able to handle common, everyday situations with ease in relatively little time. I’ve encountered no problems with the app itself, and it provides great supplemental material that the audio-only version available on Audible and elsewhere just doesn’t provide. All in all, I absolutely recommend this app, and especially the Pimsleur method itself.

I Rely on Pimsleur. I started using Pimsleur back in the 90’s when I was getting ready to take an important trip to Brazil. I only spoke English and had no knowledge of Portuguese. I used it for months while working in my classroom after work and on my commute. I spent six weeks in the country and found that my Pimsleur practice really worked. I was able to communicate and understand in a way that allowed me to both have fun and do research. Years later, I had the opportunity to study and tour Japan for three weeks. Again, I knew Nothing about the language, but Pimsleur really came through. I travelled in a group of 200 American educators (I teach music) and unexpectedly people in the group would call me for help as they noticed I was the American who could “communicate” (I still count myself as a beginner) in Japanese. Now, I’m working on French for the first time in my life and have the advantage of Pimsleur on my phone. I’m using other French language apps, too, but Pimsleur is the most convenient while working or driving and I think it’s the most thorough. I’m so glad the reading resources are available, too on the app.

Key app for language learning. I used Pimsleur to learn French and Japanese some 14 years ago. I became a translator in both languages and am now married to a Japanese woman, having lived in Japan now 12 years. I am now starting to learn Korean as I am working in a Korean restaurant and want to learn. There are many apps out there for language learning, but Pimsleur for me is the only one that is a must. It is the only one that actually gets me speaking. Sure, you're not going to be pronouncing things perfectly in the beginning. You can't be afraid of that. Just gradually improve. For western languages like French or Spanish, one lesson per day might be fine. You might want to space it out a little more, review lessons, and of course, you must supplement this with other ways of studying. That is true of all study methods/apps. Learning Japanese is many times harder than French, and for Japanese I probably listened to each lesson (and spoke out loud!) five to seven times per lesson! Yes! Asian languages are harder! Once per lesson will not be enough. Also, do not cram 30 lessons into 30 days. This will not work! It is simply too fast. Be patient, review lessons, and supplement with other study methods. Most importantly, SPEAK OUT LOUD! You have to practice with your mouth and vocal cords like they are musical instruments. Because they are! 🤗

Best way to learn a language. Pimsleur is hands-down, the single best way to learn a different language and begin to actually think and converse in that language. If you just want to learn the word for beer, the word for house, and how to ask, “where is the bathroom?” then by all means, use those other programs. However, if you want to have a solid foundation with the ability to have meaningful conversations and the launchpad to effectively continue learning long after the program, by interacting with the culture itself, then just buy the full Pimsleur program for your desired language. The app itself is well thought-out and has very few issues. Once in a while it will forget which lesson you last completed, making you scroll manually to the correct lesson. The only other thing I really wish for is that the appropriate reading lesson would be linked directly from the audio lesson. But for learning, there’s simply nothing better, and I’ve tried the other big names as well. This is the only one that “stuck.”

Best language learning tool of all - I’ve tried all. You name it, I’ve tried it. Duolingo, other recordings, other apps - I can’t even remember them all. And nothing’s better than Pimsleur. I work in reality TV, on a travel adventure show and I’ve used Pimsleur to learn basic Hungarian, so I can be polite when working there. And I’ve been using it for Italian 1-5 because I have relatives in Italy whom I visit, and I really can communicate and have a real conversation. I make mistakes, of course, but I can speak and listen and understand More important. In the past I would get Pimsleur from the library, but the app is an improvement and it is worth the money for me. They have updated the lessons, and the visual reinforcement of text is really a big plus. My biggest belief is that the best system is the one you use. For me it always ends up being Pimsleur.

ALL you need.. Language learning is a superpower. The easiest way to learn is to have conversations with people, so through verbal repetition and listening you can be successful in your new language. THIS is what Pimsleur does. It has so many languages that you can learn; listening to these audios, and learning how the words you just learned look like on paper after is the most natural and effective way when you start any language. This app is a 10/10. I have tried so many and this is the best one. Be consistent with the audios, try to do them everyday, combine this with maybe some basic reading on your own, and some podcasts so you can listen more in your target language and believe me in a month you’ll see the difference. This is what I did for my third language and what I plan to do for my fourth now. Be passionate about the language you are learning, be curious, and with the help of this app you’ll be speaking in no time.

Great supplemental practice, but not a stand-alone. This app is really good at what it does. Like all language apps on the market, they use the theory of not explaining the grammar or tense that is happening. It's situational audio learning. You hear the audio and learn the tense and grammar in the context of a real sentence. This is a good way to learn a language naturally, but for me, it wouldn't be enough without traditional learning. Pairing this app with a traditional language education will accelerate you. You can learn grammar in school or online and learn the "rules" explained in English, but then practice the target language in a natural, conversational way. I'm using it to learn French. French has so many rules. Like many languages, you need to know the genders of words, the order of adjectives, nouns, pronouns, possessive words, tense rules, etc. Without knowing some of the rules, it's hard for some people to pick up on the nuance when you just hear audio. But paired with some "rule learning" I have to give this app 5 stars. They are thoughtful about how they teach the language, and you can tell a lot of thought went into the curriculum. I would recommend this to anyone who is learning a language and wants to speed up the process.

Content: Great. App: frustrating. First off, credit where it’s due: over the past 5 months I worked through Italian 1-5. I’ve been in Italy now for three weeks and am having a much easier time integrating at work thanks to what I’ve learned with Pimsleur. I have been almost constantly frustrated with the app’s seeming dislike of working offline, and its tendency to delete lessons I’ve already downloaded. Thus if I live in an area with poor cell reception but have WiFi at home, I might go out for a walk hoping to do a Pimsleur lesson already downloaded to my phone, and two minutes into my walk find that the lesson is suddenly no longer there. When this happens, the app tends to display a message to the effect of ‘Functionality updated. Re-download lesson’. I’ve found this extremely inconvenient. Finally, the lesson download functionality itself is inconvenient: say you want to download Level 1, all 30 lessons. You have to individually select each lesson. Ok, no big deal. But then you want to do something else while the messages are downloading: nope. If you switch screens within the app, if you try to open a different app, or if your screensaver kicks on, downloading stops, so you have to restart your download. Obviously, despite the frustration, using the app is still easier than buying the CD’s and carrying around a CD player. But come on, Pimsleur. Your developers can do better.

Worthwhile and Exceeds Expectations!. I remember being just a kid when I first heard about the Pimsleur Method for learning languages and wishing I could access it. Years later as a post-baccalaureate student and in the age of smartphones and ease of access to subscriptions, I finally got my hands on Pimsleur after years of using Duolingo to learn various languages. I decided to pick up Mandarin, and immediately, you get straight into the speaking while trying to pronounce words similar to the speaker. I was surprised at how many words I actually ended up learning in just the first level alone and how much I could actually put the pieces together based on what Pimsleur taught me to correctly say sentences I wanted that weren't reviewed in the lessons at all! I finally mustered up the courage to ask a new friend of mine to help me practice speaking what I learned in person, and he was so impressed at how natural my Mandarin sounded! I get very self-conscious about how I sound when I'm learning languages too, so this was really validating for me. I'm almost finished with Mandarin Level 2 and I just have to say that Pimsleur exceeded my expectations and is so, so worth the price. I also practice Spanish on here as well to get better at it even though I learned it when I was a kid. Along the way, they implemented the pronunciation mastery feature, which is also such a very useful tool! Years of waiting to get my hands on Pimsleur was such a dream come true!

I’ve learned so much so incredibly fast!. I’ve always wanted to learn a second language, but for some reason, I always thought that I didn’t have the intelligence to do it. well, I certainly learned that intelligence can be very subjective, because I have learned so much in such a small window of time and the more you keep going, The more fun you start having with it. i’ve decided that I want to learn how to speak Finnish, the national language of Finland. Something else that really took me by surprise was the fact that as you start learning words, you start making those neuronal pathways between where the original word in your mother tongue language is stored in the word that you learn through your second language, and once that connection is made it stays there, and in the beginning, you’ll start to hear the words, and then the English version of the word Will pop into your head as the definition. And then, as time goes on even more, and you’re learning more and more advanced words, you literally start to think in the new language. all I can say, is I recommend this program to anybody who wants to be able to start speaking a new language right away within the first lesson because it is true. You do learn how to speak some bear essential words in the first lesson.

Adults Don’t Learn Language the Same as Children. Pimsleur assumes that an adult who is STUDYING a new language will learn the same way a child does merely by listening. THAT IS NOT TRUE. Children learn language by association. They are completely immersed in an environment where they constantly see and hear adults and older children moving their lips, speaking sounds, making facial expressions, and pointing at things. Moreover, children can interact with and touch things in the environment in which they are learning language without the hindrance of already knowing a language. An adult STUDYING a second language will naturally initially filter the foreign language through a translation into their first language and associate the foreign word and sentence structure with their native word and sentence structure. Spewing sentences in a foreign language without a literal translation that shows adults word-for-word how the foreign language structures it’s sentences is merely a frustrating, laborious, and fruitless means of passing the time. And to heap on more frustration, it’s nearly impossible to hear what the voices are speaking: did he just speak with a “b” in that word or a “d”?

Great App. I thought I’d give the Pimsleur app a try to prepare for an upcoming trip to France, and now 4 months later I’m totally hooked! I do a new lesson every day or two, and learn something new everyday. As opposed to memorizing things in a book, listening and repeating with the app seems to stick in my head. I’ve learned pronunciation is EVERYTHING in speaking and understanding French. I hated French in high school, but now I love it. And I feel like learning a new language at my age is good for keeping the mind sharp. Pimsleur lessons are well planned and introduce the language slowly and painlessly! Update: It’s now been almost 8 months and I just completed the third series of 30 lessons. I continue to do 2-3 lessons a week, surprising myself as I tend to start and quit projects. I truly feel like if I stick with Pimsleur I’ll gain a basic but useful competence in French, which I’ll be able to build on.

Very effective approach. Would like more.. I love how Pimsleur is so effective at teaching in a way to enable users to start speaking confidently within 30 days, or lessons. The format and science-based approaches are very effective. But I’d like to be able to continually improve my knowledge and expertise of each language surpassing those 30 lessons. If there were additional features to allow users to study the alphabet, vocabulary, grammar, culture as it pertains to the languages, and other effective aspects, I think it would be even more helpful and intriguing. It would make sense to have these additional aspects available only after completing, or separate from, the original 30 lessons, so that people are still fulfilling the primary objective of Pimsleur which seems to be helping people begin SPEAKING a language. Whether they would be a part of the all access pass, an additional subscription, or even an separate app, I’m not sure exactly how that would work, but I think it would be great. At the very least, having some guidance and direction on which resources to turn to after completing each course to increase mastery, whether offered by Pimsleur, or other sources, would be nice.

Minor add ins to teachings would help. I love this app I have learned about 7 lessons of both Egyptian Arabic and Eastern Arabic dialect. Anytime I speak to someone who knows the language they’re highly impressed and want to know where and how I’m learning the language. HOWEVER as much as I’ve learned Pimsleur doesn’t teach sentence structure at least in lesson 1 so that way you can to begin to create your own sentences beyond the phrases they teach. Nor does it every establish what letters you’ll typically see for male vs. female which we all know is important outside of the English language. An example is a T is often tacked on to Arabic feminine words or the ending changes to add an “i” not one time does it address that. I feel like the app teaches but it doesn’t teach you foundational knowledge to feel independent from the app. That would be my main concern and they should definitely add that in for the harder languages such as Arabic. Very simple change.

Great content but app could use improvements. Overall, I’ve enjoyed using Pimsleur for learning new languages. It’s a great tool for practicing conversational language acquisition, particularly pronunciation and auditory recognition — my Russian-speaking friends have said I sound native when using words or phrases I’ve learned with Pimsleur. However, I would like to see the addition of new content, e.g., Ukrainian. I’m planning to relocate to Ukraine, and it would be great to have 5 complete levels, especially since Russian will be viewed less favorable there in the future. Also, in terms of the app, I would like to have the option to disable transliteration on all practice exercises (flash cards, speed round). It would also be great if we could build a custom deck of flash cards combining cards from various lessons and bonus packs, especially since it’s difficult to work the bonus cards into the typical workflow when studying. I would like to be able to focus on all challenging words/phrases in a single location on the app, adding and removing them as I see fit.

Worth the cost. (New review after 2 weeks) Yeah sorry have to update my review. I’m lowering my initial rating, even four stars seems a little generous. I don’t know why but the Egyptian Arabic is very feminine dominant. It will teach you the make tense of the words but more often that not it won’t. I often have to teach myself these words through google and asking people who speak the language. Im a male and most of the words if feminine you just add an extra sound at the end. That is pretty easy to grasp just adding that sound if need be. What is not easy to understand is just giving the feminine version and moving on assuming I’ll just figure it out. First thing to do before starting a new lesson is skip to the end so you can unlock the word practice so you can look up the words (if your male) they probably will skip over. It’s very frustrating realizing most of my vocabulary I’ve learn only applies if I’m a women or talking to one which I’m not and wry likely won’t be so it’s an entire waste of my time. (Old review) It does cost money but the (Egyptian) Arabic is very good and is not a common language on these apps. I used Rosetta Stone and Duo Lingo for Spanish which was pretty good but I also didn’t know about this app back then either. The Arabic on those apps in my opinion isn’t as good because it just teaches standard Arabic which no one really speaks.

App is a scam. I just downloaded the app because it says it’s free to download. I’ve wanted to learn a few languages for a while now. So I thought I’d give this app a try since I’ve seen adds for it. However, after downloading and setting up an account it tells you that you can try it free for 7-days then you have to pay for a monthly subscription. That’s not free and it’s forcing people to get a subscription. I don’t have a lot of money right now and I thought while I have more free time than normal I could start to learn one of the languages I’ve wanted to learn maybe someday when I have more money upgrade my account not be forced into it after 7-days. There is also no way to delete your account if it’s free and not on a paying subscription until after the 7th day when you get charged and then they state they won’t refund subscriptions. There is a possibility you can cancel a free account only by calling in. It’s appalling to refuse subscription refunds especially if you force people into it even if they may not want a subscription or cannot afford it.

ADHD and I’m retaining this!. I think the hardest thing about learning new languages for me has been overthinking and getting lost in assignments and alphabets and whatnot. Having ADHD made it simply impossible in a classroom setting and private lessons just never held my attention. Well this is structured perfectly. The 30 minute lessons are easy to follow and it’s fun. You stay engaged and the repetition is perfectly placed. It feels like a perfectly productive private lesson (again I tried private lessons) The tools allow you to practice each phrase and record your pronunciation for accuracy and so what I do is listen to the lesson, perfect my pronunciation with the voice coach, then listen to the lesson again and try to follow it perfectly (so it’s a game I play with myself). Throughout the day I use the voice coach just to keep it all fresh so when I start the next lesson the following day, I’m prepared to move on. I don’t have to do this though bc They cover what you learned from the previous lessons throughout the next to keep it all fresh. It’s really brilliant. I’m speaking it perfectly and I’m retaining it! That is mind blowing to me. Well done.

Best language learning program you could ever ask for!. I’m taking a trip to Spain and wanted to be able to converse with the locals in a friendly and congenial manner. I’m a complete novice at this and have never spoken another language besides English. This course is very comprehensive in the way it teaches. Sentences are first spoken in English, then spoken in Spanish, (in this case.) The sentence is also simultaneously written in Spanish so that you can see the words that you’re learning. Additionally, as you dig deeper into the program, there are flash cards to test your comprehension, a voice recognition section to help with pronunciation, and several other sections that really help you to learn and comprehend. My only wish is that I would like to have audio cds of the lessons so that I could practice while driving. Other than that, this program is truly amazing, and very well thought out!

Voice coach occasionally hears ghosts.. Overall I think this is the best program for learning a new language but the voice recognition still had a few problems. It usually gets it right but once in a while it “hears” something totally different from what you say. You can listen to the playback and just have to wonder how it comes up with what it scribes. And there are a few phrases you cannot get 100% no matter what you say. You can even record and playback the native speaker from the app and still get only 97%. For my final comment on the Voice Coach I would like to suggest that’s the app not be quite so strict on word for word. Sometimes the sentence to translate can be said differently especially if the original has ambiguity as to gender or level of formality or even has a pronoun that can be inferred,( ie ‘nosotros’) from the verb. I understand this raises the complexity of the programming somewhat but it would help greatly for a learner trying to speak naturally without trying to just memorize particular phrases from the lessons.

Excellent for speaking and listening. This program is the perfect program to hone speaking and listening skills. And with the premium version, you can also see the texts and practice vocabulary flash cards and play games to increase your chances of success. The words are broken down nicely and the rates of exposure and repetition seem to be perfect for retention. The phrases and vocabulary are centered around normal conversations that one might have in the target language. The speed and rhythm of the speech is also more at conversation pace which increases the chances that one will actually understand what’s being said when listening to a native speaker. Excellent program. I have three language packages from Pimsleur. One to keep me current on a language I already know pretty well, and the other two to learn new languages I’m interested in. I highly recommend this program.

Sharing is too difficult. Not sharing friendly, too expensive, not enough time between prompts, more for people who learn language easily already. Explanations: Would love to be able to share this app with my family as we all try to learn a language together. Pimsleur is a very high price monthly comparative to other language apps so being able to share would make the cost more reasonable. However, you have to share your password in order to do so. If you have purchased the app through Apple then you have to share your Apple ID. Yikes! Not something anyone should be forced to do. Highly recommend Duo Lingo instead for sharing. I’ve learned so much more and faster with dl too. Pimsleur became a secondary way to practice speaking but for the cost and without a better way to share it isn’t worth the money. Spend your money elsewhere. Also, Pimsleur does not give ample time between prompts to form sentences. So it is a bit frustrating, which is discouraging. With some app and time adjustments this could be an amazing platform for advanced language learning.

Actual speaking practice!. I have been raving about Pimsleur to anyone who will listen since I started using it in February 2020. I love it because it fits into my schedule since I can practice while washing dishes, straightening up, putting on make-up, etc. It also actually gets you speaking unlike other language apps. I took a break from live French lessons until I had finished the Pimsleur French course. After returning to a live lesson, my French teacher complimented me on how much I had improved in my speaking skills. My listening has also dramatically improved. Before Pimsleur, I would need her to write out almost everything, but now I can understand around 90% of what she says and only occasionally need her to type something. My only request is that Pimsleur makes flash cards based on spaced repetition. I use another app for spaced repetition flashcards and it’s so much more efficient than regular flashcards. Thanks Pimsleur, for finally providing an app that fits with my schedule and actually helps me to speak!

Pimsleur Language App is Smart and Effective. I am a humanities professor and have studied several languages. 15 years ago I tried to learn Japanese in a conventional way attending class, doing homework from numerous books and listening to cassette tapes. Things progressed slowly but because I did not visit the country when I intended to, I lost most of that early capacity. I’m planning a trip for next year and decided to restart using this app. It is exceptional because it utilizes multiple approaches, recording my attempts to speak, and offering feedback, game oriented flash cards for building vocabulary, and nice historical notes on culture. Easy to use while I’m driving or airport waiting or listening to a boring lecture.. The monthly subscription also allows me to switch to other languages I may need to refresh. I’ve used Rosetta Stone and numerous other products but this one is clearly superior.

Best for being conversational and getting around. I did French for 7 years from middle school and into college. I always did well with reading and writing but listening comprehension and speaking were always really hard and I was never confident in either. It’s likely why I decided to give up on a French major. Anyway, a couple of years ago, I was finally going to go to France and decided to pick up French again so I was ready for my trip. I did the entire French curriculum with Pimsleur (5 months) and, despite the pandemic delaying my trip, I can say my fluency and accent were better than they ever were when I did all those years of French in school. I was complimented by several native speakers while I was there on my accent! About 2 months before my actual trip (a full year later) I did pick up Duolingo to do a refresh and actually stayed with it, doing one lesson every day for 650 days to complete that curriculum and I can say, Pimsleur was significantly better suited for speaking and understanding than even all that time with Duolingo. I’m going back to Paris in two months so decided to pick up Pimsleur again to hone my ear 😊 it’s definitely worth the money.

It’s pretty good by far. I’ve been trying to learn Japanese for about 5 months now using Duolingo Kanji garden Write! Japanese and some other ones which are nice and all that but I never felt like the things they shove in my face all at once stuck with me and I felt rushed and panicked when doing some of them, but this is app is so nice because it's really at your pace and you can go back whenever you need to and they don't shove everything at you at once which I’m so thankful for and this app is the only one that went step by step to help me say a word I struggled alot useing the other apps because of struggling to say a word with no help I love this app and my mother dose to I do recommend this app for anyone trying to learn a language and just started. Now thanks to this app I can now have a short conversation already at lesson one and understand that short conversation Duolingo could never.ありがとうございます^_^。

Best language app/site I’ve used. I’ve used multiple sites and apps to learn Japanese and while they are good for learning random words short term, they didn’t help me learn conversational speech and grammar. This app started off exactly how you would in school, it gives you the basics- hello, thank you, where is ____, it is here, it is over there, good night, etc. The progress as you go on also makes complete sense. You could take the first few lessons and be ready to at least get around Japan with basic words. After a couple weeks you can almost speak conversationally. And the way it is set up, 30min lessons and they recommend you do one lesson a day, I generally do 1 every other day due to how busy I am. It helps keep me on track and it gives me a start and end point for each day unlike most apps I’ve used. I also highly recommend getting the $20/month version instead of the $15/month simply because the flash cards, reading, speed rounds, and speak easy options that come with the $20 version are something you can do in public without looking crazy or interrupting quiet spaces, and it’s also a HUGE help in learning the new language. Sorry this review has been all over the place. I hope it’s been helpful regardless. Good luck!

Love it. Working into level 4 now and I love it. Be aware that it gives you no grammar instruction or really rules at all. It’s simply listen-repeat-listen-repeat teaching style. It works really well. I had Spanish in high school 25 years ago. I bought a separate grammar book so as simple principles like past tense and future tense some up I look them up to remember the “why” behind the sentence structure/conjugation. Pimsleur is designed to not have any of this, but I think incorporating this grammar study in as well has really helped me. I’d highly recommend it. My only criticism would really be that it gets repetitive. I’m 94 lessons in. That’s a solid 45 hours. It gets boring at times that’s for sure. Same thing over and over So I typically listen/repeat while at the gym every morning and then some driving around. But I don’t really know how they would mix it up because it does get so repetitive I have taken a break for a week here and there, but for the most part I’ve stuck strong to the one lesson every day for the last 3-4 months.

Truly helps with listening and speaking. I’ve used (and continue to use) multiple methods and approaches in studying Spanish, and all have been effective in some degree. But after completing one full unit of this program, I’ve been very clearly reminded that truly hearing and speaking it is by far the most powerful way of really learning to communicate. That’s the foundation of this method, and it really seems to work for me. Even though much of the material in Unit 1 of this course (Castilian Spanish) was technically review for me, it still really helped, emphasizing listening, both to the finer points of pronunciation, and just constructing phrases. Best of all, I genuinely feel more confident in my ability to actually understand and speak better than before, which is honestly a great relief. I’m going to continue with unit 2. It’s pricier than some other programs, but to me it’s well worth it.

Good app. I like how they remind you across lessons, I wouldn’t have even realised I forgot something if they didn’t bring it back up later on

Only way I could learn. Have been trying to learn French for years on and off, I always gave up as couldn’t get it, then I found Pimsleur, I am now getting it!!

Connects head to mouth. Studying from a textbook gives you lots of head knowledge but when push comes to shove it’s recall that gets the words out. This method forces your recall as it will teach you new words and then simulate different situations that force you to recall it. This method is the only method that has given me confidence to speak! A downside is that STILL this uses some old, formal language that you won’t hear on the streets. But this is common with most language teaching methods unfortunately.

Solid. I subscribed to Premium and it has been fun going through all my languages again. Maybe it was my age but I was more conversational in French and Italian when I was using Pimsleur and I look forward to testing myself again. One suggestion: more options in the settings to toggle when the audio cuts out. Personally, I’m not in a car, but the audio will stop playing for too many reasons and it is getting annoying having to constantly press play as it interferes with concentration.

Fantastic Casual learning!. I’m a plumber with some time on my hands and have always loved the Italian language and Italy, obviously! Found this app through a review online and started the 7 day trial. The app is great, can listen to it on a run or at home while doing chores. Such a great experience, love it

Very good but…. It’s very good but I subscribed to learn Thai. After the first month I’ve pretty much outgrown the limited Thai content so until there’s more content I pretty much don’t need a subscription any longer 😐

Finally!. This the first program I’ve found (and I’ve used many) that improve your spoken French. Before Pimsleur French my reading, listening and writing comprehension were way way ahead of my speaking skills. Pimsleur is closing that gap.

Best language learning app!. I got this app in hopes of achieving my goal of learning Japanese. It didn’t let me down! In ten minutes I was able to have an entire conversation with someone who spoke Japanese! It’s brilliant and there are so many languages to learn. I would recommend to people wanting to learn any certain language! This app deserves 5 stars!

Great. This is fantastic after learning how to read and write Korean. It’s easy to pick up and keep the conversation in your mind. Repetition is helpful.

french. very underated! This is the best language learning app I've come across. and the fact that I willingly paid for it because it was so good and made me want to keep going. It has improved my general french so much.

Can’t cancel subscription!! DO NOT SUBSCRIBE IF YOU LIVE IN AUSTRALIA. I live in Australia and subscribed to Pimsleur last year via their website. I can’t log in to my ‘account’, verify it and therefore cancel it because apparently it doesn’t exist! I’ve emailed and called all the listed support numbers but have not received a response, and the numbers are not connected. I’m desperate to cancel my subscription as I can’t afford it anymore!!

I love it. its amazing. definitely recommend.. I feel like i know a chunk of Japanese just by 30 lessons. i can’t wait to finish it. definitely a 10/10

Easy to learn and stay on track. The way lessons are presented make learning effortless. The app really helps staying on track. The premium features make it a lot of fun and really help with ingraining the subtleties of the language.

Absolutely Amazing. Pimsleur is helping me understand and speak Italian much better then any app that I have tried before. It is very easy for beginners and is very effective for learning.

Spanish - while driving. Only early days but so far this has been great to have an app that I can use while I am driving and do the reading lessons later on . My friend has been using another app for a year and I am already catching up with them. Adios

Very good training & learning. Starts slowly & gradually adds words to your vocabulary with lots of repartition for you to learn how to hear & say the words in context

Usually a great app.... But it won’t open anymore? I sign into my user, after which I reach the page to select what lesson level I’m at. I click on the level, and then it just goes to a loading screen. Never loading up the lesson plan for the level I’ve chosen. Thereafter, every time I open up the app all I get is the same loading screen.

Expensive, but the best.. This is the best language learning app I have used and I have tried many. I will definitely be using this app regularly in the short term, however, it is quite expensive and I’m not certain I’ll be able to use it in the long term. The audio lessons are excellent with a great balance of challenging and achievable, and the extra functions are brilliant supplements to the learning process. The app is really well designed as it looks great visually and isn’t confusing to use. I would recommend this app to anyone willing to spend the money and time. Hopefully it can become more accessible in the future.

The best. I’ve tried all the other language learning apps. This one gets straight to what you’ll need to actually speak and have conversations in whatever language you’re learning. I’m learning italian and the first lesson taught me how to say I do/don’t understand Italian, I understand a little italian, and how to ask if someone understands English. The app also plays whilst closed, like music, so I can virtually use it whenever.

Diverse learning. This app has so many diverse components, making it a great learning system. Much more comprehensive than any other app I’ve used.

The language course that delivers. This method works and is the one that got my from knowing a few phrases to speaking within months. I refer it to everyone I know because I am so impressed.

Very well designed app. Super Easy to use and way better than other apps like duolingo, as the 30 minute lessons are super easy to follow along with. It’s so much nicer to have a real persons voice in your ear explaining the pronunciation slowly and methodically and then explaining the application to the sentence.

4.5 amazing app. This has helped me studying japanese I wouldn’t recommend using it to become fluent in Japanese but it can certainly help price is also affordable And it teaches you through real world situations… DOWNLOAD NOW!

Great course but development suggestion. The course is great and the app is nice to use but I think it would be great to build a “tick” feature in next to the completed exercises (eg reading). I like to do these after the listening but loose track of what exercises I have and haven’t done. Thank you!

Best Language App To Date. I’ve tried a number of language apps but this one uses practical phrases and a logical sequence with excellent means of confirmation and affirmation of previous lessons. Love it!!!

Best way to learn a language.. Pimsleur for me is how I learn languages. I learn for travel and these work. I highly recommend to all my friends.

“Meh” app. I’ve been studying a language for 6 months and looking for additional / better learning material. My problem with this app: cannot test to a specific level (given my level 1 isn’t helpful). Cannot test or trial higher levels (or maybe you could, but I hit a pay wall). Odd method of learning in this decade: for example, in Russian, rather than Cyrillic letters, the lessons or tests were in English pronunciation. Company need to reconsider direction of app in order to exist in the next 2 years...

Russian. Tried so many different ways to learn including one on one tutoring. And this is the best. By far. Solid real results that stick!

Favourite language learning app. Ive tried them all. Pimsleur works Even after the first level of 30 lessons I was having conversations (attempting to at least) in spanish. Changed the game for travelling for me. A quick 30 lessons leading up to whichever country you go to only for $30aud - the relationships you make from even trying to speak their mother tongue are absolutely worth it.

Accelerated learning. I have tried many language learning apps, but for me Pimsleur is by far the most effective way of learning a new language. I listen to a lesson each day, a few times to make sure that I absorb all of the material. The addition of flash cards, and other ways of learning really helps. It would be nice to access multiple languages on the monthly plan, but this way I am focussed on a single language. Give it a try, and accelerate your learning of a new language.

The best by far. I’ve tried 7 different language apps non of those have worked then I found Pimsleur. Pimsleur has taught me more then all the other apps combined in 1 lesson. There is only 2 downsides to Pimsleur, it costs to much and I need more time to speak because pronouncing some words are hard.

Fantastic way to learn a language. I was learning French via Duolingo for two years, but still found I wasn’t able to speak until I started using Pimsleur. Pimsleur builds on each lesson day by day, so before you know it, you can carry on a conversation.

Great language learning app. Pimsleur is a great language learning program for me. Learning on the go is very convenient as you can listen while driving, exercising or doing other chores at home. I’m still early in to learning French, and I find it a great experience.

Best method. There is no replacement for learning how to produce the language. Input is still important but output cements a language like nothing else. Awesome that they finally have a polyglot option. Price is high but worth it if you’re familiar with this method or SaySomethingIn method (albeit slower than the latter).

It works. Italian is my language of choice and I wish to read write and speak it with as little Australian accent as possible. I know this app has helped me enormously. It is my go to, unlike all the others I have. Try it in your choice of language and see how you go. But one has to keep at it.

Best learning course. I enjoy all aspects of learning in this app, I have been subscribed for two years and paced myself through the French levels , I’m at level four now, my partner is French so I can practice with her as well when I want to , but there is no pressure on her by having my main learning be independent , so I don’t have to count on her to learn is great 👍

Good app. Better alternative to time poor individuals who still want to learn a language. Easier than Duolingo. Actually taught you grammar as well and allowed you to expand your own learning after completing all the 3-5 levels of the course

The best system for spoken language. Get away from the textbooks and just listen and speak as in the real world conversation style. I have found no better system in 6 years of learning Japanese. It embeds the grammar better than a technical explanation. I ‘get’ grammar instinctively now. What a relief!!

Bugs need fixing. Great app & program. That being said, when I go into the reading materials (for Hebrew), they never come up. Just a continuous loading screen. On 2 different hi speed wifi’s and mobile data- just loading screen. Fix and I’ll give 5 stars.

App improvements. Hi Team, I had a sudden interest in learning German when I had some backpacker friends living with me. However they have since moved on and my motivation has decreased. I think Notifications to push your learning will help myself excel. Everyone has a very busy lifestyle and once out of routines you often don’t make time for your learning !

Fantastic. I have done Pimsleur in a few different languages now (German, Italian, French, Farsi) and am really happy with the courses. You will develop a great accent if you follow the pronunciation. Use it in concert with other learning methods as no single resource will get you to a place of fluency.

Ok concept but terrible support. I’ve been learning the Croatian Level 1. It’s nice to be able to repeat the lessons as many times as i need but, I find that the reading lessons are confusing. They’re just Croatian words with no translation and, a few of them don’t even come up when I try to get the google translate. Then there’s the Amerikanac and Amerikanka! I’m Australian and I sent a question asking how I’d say that but the reply is robotic and didn’t answer any of my questions. I gave only 2 stars because I think someone needs to be in the support line to answer questions.

French premium. Working my way through the 5 levels, currently halfway. Can’t speak highly enough of it. Congratulations to all involved. Very highly recommended

It’s not to good🤨. I don’t think people should download this app. I mean it is pretty good like you can still download it if u want but I think it’s little hard because for some reason I can’t remember anything from the laungwidge I’m learning. It still is really good but it’s a little bit hard to remember.

The best. It is the best I’ve found for speaking and listening practice with practical scenarios. I love how they breakdown pronunciation and continual review previous content to put it I to long term memory. The voice recognition for practice and reading lessons are brilliant!

Perfect for Learning to Speak a Language. I have used several apps over the past two years to teach myself Spanish. I am now up to Level 4. This is the best app I’ve found to actually learn how to speak Spanish. However, I do find the Voice Coach function a little frustrating. For no clear reason a word I have said successfully many times before in lessons will suddenly be rejected and I cannot pass that lesson. Nevertheless, the app gets my unqualified approval.

Good program, poor app. I’m reviewing the app, not the program. I bought this primarily to use in the car on my iPod touch, but about 3 quarters of the time when I attempt to do so, the lessons I have previously downloaded are not playable and require re-downloading. Unsure why the files corrupt like this, it should be simple to just download and play an audio file.

Is good but leaps too fast. The process is really good and the idea is there. I can only speak ti French but the problem is the lessons leap from never hearing a phrase into full speed French in almost a single step. The speaker is not slow enough to pick up the subtle nuisances in the language to ensure the correct pronunciation. Too easy to mistake a ‘p’ sound for a ‘b’ sound etc.

Free Trial Became Addiction. I was just using the trial for the pronunciation function, when I realised that I was picking up new vocab and ease of speaking within minutes. I listen and speak in the car and I was so shocked at how it works! Definitely staying subscribed, as I was considering paying $500 for lessons. Now I just use this everyday when I drive! I wouldn’t really recommend for an absolute beginner as you would miss out on a lot of reading and grammar tips (especially for Japanese!!)

Best language app. I was conversational in Indonesian after completing level 1 and spoke it a lot during my time in Indonesia. The locals were very impressed! I’m conversational in French now too, after completing level 1 French, and ready for my Europe trip! I did also use some books and other resources to help me, but without Pimsleur I wouldn’t have learnt how to actually speak and pronounce everything properly. I’m a really busy person with my own business and a second job also, so there’s no way I’d be able to find time to study languages if it wasn’t for the Pimsleur lessons on my phone, which I listen to usually while driving, cooking, doing exercise, or doing housework. I have recommended it to many friends as they usually opt for the “free” language apps but I never hear of them getting very good results. You get what you pay for in my opinion. Thanks Pimsleur :)

Amazing!. Great app it really helped! Just wished I didn’t have to pay to go learn the other levels. Would be great if we could at least go from 1-10 for free☺️

I really like it.. I think this is a great app and a great program. I love that it’s thirty minutes/lesson and you know you’ve gotten a solid session. The extras ie flash card, pronunciation, help with the fine details. I can be folding laundry and studying, I don’t need to be staring at my phone the entire time. I’ve only just started, so I can’t comment on my actual language ability thus far, but at this point I give it five stars.

Love this program. This is the third language I am learning through Pimsleur as I prepare to go to Spain. The basics are there so I feel confident connecting with local people in a respectful polite way.

Best for learning any new language. I’ve live with someone speaking a different language from my own native English. She is amazed at my understanding of her dialect and intonation without much of an accent . Try it out , if you’re serious about learning a new language you will . There are many verbal cues as well as visual aids to help you along the way to learning multiple new languages

Amazing!!. This app has taught me how to speak Arabic in a context While also teaching you how to start a conversation Currently I am learning Eastern arabic also known as Levantine arabic. It is helping me speak a lot of Arabic even though I’m only on lesson 7

First two lesson plans… learned plenty already!. Most times I would never respond to a rating request; however, this program works quickly at starting a new language and retaining the information. So happy!

Great app. Love the app just a little expensive

Excellent way to learn a new language. I’m through 3 lessons and a bunch of practice sessions and I can already feel like I’m absorbing some of the language. Looking forward to seeing if this continues!

Solid app for learning to speak. App works well and it’s a good way to learn the basics and practice speaking

Teaches conversation. A lot of other apps teach words but not conversation. The only downfall is if you need to see the new word you are learning, you have to wait til you finish the lesson to see the words.

Pretty good. Helps with understanding more

Very nice method - way too expensive. 18.95$CA a month is too expensive- especially that other apps offer as good learning for free AND not only with English instructions

Very good, but also quite expensive.. The Pimsleur app is an amazing tool in respect to teaching you how to learn to speak a given language- within 30 minutes (1 lesson) I was demonstrating several phrases with my Spanish friends- all of which celebrated my excellent pronunciation. However, in Canadian dollars, the cost is $25/ month, which compared to duolingo, or various other language apps, is very expensive.

Hindi for me, French for hubby!. We are both learning each other’s language and enjoying this app so far, still many lessons to go!!

App is great.. Well on my way to learning danish

Pimsleur review. This app is fantastic. I was using Duo Lingo but feel I am learning more and retaining more with Pimsleur. Highly recommend. Also. 30 minutes is a great module length.

Excellent App. I am amazed at how quickly I am learning Spanish .

Great. Great

Pimsleur is the best. I love Pimsleur it has been invaluable in learning proper pronunciation & to be conversation in Spanish, I do highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in learning.

Great Desktop and Mobile Version App. This gets you up and running with conversation right away. You may not become an expert but it’s a good place to start. However, the grammar rules, you will need to understand it by supplementing with another learning tool, that explains the grammar rules.

Love it!. Best language app I’ve used. I’ve tried Duolingo (paid version) and there are too many distracting features in that app and it’s more like a game. Pimsleur is more focus on actually learning the language and it feels like a more serious approach. I am really enjoying it so far.

Amazing so far.. I’m learning so I obviously can’t tell you how great my French is. But it’s definitely more effective than any other app I’ve used. I think it’s perfect paired with something like Duolingo.

Scammers. Signed up for a free trial, the style was not suitable for me so I cancelled. I discovered that I had been charged after cancelling, only to find they had created a new subscription without my consent.

Horrible. Crashes constantly.. I love the Pimsleur content but their app has been nothing but trouble. I bought the courses outright so I could download and listen offline. The app simply doesn’t work. It crashes constantly even though my iOS is fully updated and so is the app. On top of all that, I initially had a subscription for their service and they won’t refund me even though I couldn’t even use it due to their dodgy app. Steer clear of this.

Love it. Best language app I have used to date. Honestly you learn lots very quickly

Best language learning app for listening comprehension and speaking. As title says, it is really good for listening and speaking. Also, the fact that you are able to learn up to 51 languages from this app is insane. I want to pick up my French and also want to start learning Korean from scratch. You can also share the app with your family members and friends, so I might share my account with my mom. Then she can work on her English. Things to improve: - It’d be nice to support landscape mode on iPad. This will greatly enhance learning experience for iPad users. - Add multiple speed play options for such as 1.25x and 1.5x, which would be more efficient for learners who want to review/ refresh certain lessons. Likewise, maybe 0.5x and 0.75x speed can be added also for those who want to learn at a even slower speed. - It’s a bit costly to subscribe monthly. Would be nice to have the option of subscription for 3 months, 6months or any longer period at a lower rate.

Amazing app, I’m learning so much. I was using duolingo before this to learn German, and it’s good, but this one helps a lot more when it comes to actually saying the words out loud. They break down each individual word so you better understand how to pronounce it, and that helps a lot, especially with a language like German where the pronunciation is much different than English.

Continues to charge after cancelling subscription.. Contacted PIMSLEUR to cancel my subscription and they emailed me to confirm my subscription had been cancelled. They then proceeded to charge me for the following two months and refused to issue a refund. Be careful before signing up.

Good app but…. I heard good things about this app and I loved the concept ,so this is a good app to learn to speak fluently a language but it cost money to much so it’s a trash app! It’s ok to have a premium account like Duolingo but in Pimsleur if you don’t pay you can’t do anything with this app so if you have not the intention to pay , don’t download this app., TRASH!

Pimsleur. Very good program, just got it love it

Teach method is great the subscription model isn’t. There should be a monthly option for a single language for around $8.99 or something. No one needs 51 languages or the monthly price point that comes with them all.

Pimsleur supplement. I am a language teacher and a lover of many tongues. I am taking a Hebrew university course. I supplement with Pimsleur, and I am quite a bit ahead of everyone in the class.

I’m amazed!. I’m learning Japanese faster than I ever have before. I knew simple words and phrases before but I couldn’t dream of carrying a conversation! I’ve only completed 2 lessons and now I feel comfortable with picking up the words a lot easier for real life conversation. I could visit Japan and get by decently enough with what I’ve learned so far!

I love the games and flash cards. I’m learning quickly

Best app that I have tried so far. I am only starting unit 4 but I really feel I have learned a lot in just a few days. Pretty happy so far

26$ a month?. Let’s be real you don’t need 51 languages. Probably not even half of that. I feel y’all need to reconsider the monthly subscription fees.

Pimsleur. Tried several of the other apps for learning french. This was the best one by far.

Wow, I’m hooked!. I tried the free preview and really like the format. Great audio clips that are actually practical to use. I even liked the games and writing exercises. I can’t believe I was writing and reading Arabic on the first day! I just subscribed, well done!😁

Mui bien!. Gracias Pimsleur!

Best value. Pimsleur teaches you how to listen and speak faster than anything else I’ve used. Yes there are free apps you can and should use alongside it, but I’ve not found anything as effective. The app’s other minor features (e.g. flash cards) need a bit more polish, but the audio lessons and voice coach more are the main reasons to get this.

Great for ear training and speaking practice.. Really helps get up to speed with conversational language.

Amazing. Audio lessons are more practical than learning disparate vocabulary on duolingo

Totally Recommend. The course is great. The way they structured. The lessons makes it makes sense over time and each lesson builds on the last. Greatly enjoying this app.

Keeps crashing all the time. Each time I want to do a lesson, I have to download the application all over because it keeps crashing all the time.

Love it!. Already recommended it for others. I subscribed despite already having purchased a number of Pimsleur audio courses and hating software subscriptions 🤣

Its works. Its actually works and i can understand very well

Great. App

Tres American. Leave it to American developers to create a learning plan that devotes 2 lessons to teaching the phrase “I am American” but then breezes past important stuff like where to find a street or the washroom. As a non-American I found his to be quite an annoyance. I skipped the “I am American” lesson half way through but I’m having to re-listen to the useful ones. I’m just waiting for the lesson where they teach us to recite the pledge of allegiance in French LOL. Otherwise, I like it so far - it’s nice to be able to complete other tasks while listening.

Won’t orient to landscape. Any company that is too lazy to adapt an app to landscape on an iPad is second rate at best. Lost my business.

Great app. This is a great app and super easy way to learn a new language. Sometimes I wish there would be a bit more explanation around certain grammar concepts but overall it is very well done. One suggestion would be to make this app suitable for apple car play as I do a lot of my learning during driving.

Best app. I have been able to learn survival level Japanese after 100 hours. it’s important to note that each lesson, while it’s only 30 minutes long, requires a considerable about more time to master. The things I appreciate most about this format is the ability to pause the lesson and go back a few seconds to practice things that I didn’t get the first time, that opportunity is simply not available in a broad-based classroom setting. I can do this driving to work or driving home, I can do this well I exercise, and it all adds up to language proficiency. I am so thankful for being alive during a time when language learning is available this way. Plus all of the mistakes I make are completely private LOL

Leagues ahead of Rosetta Stone. So I have been experimenting with a number of language learning software over the years including Rosetta Stone(don’t waste your money on it ) duolingo (I still have the plus subscription that I use as a vocabulary supplement for my Japanese, but it’s far from perfect) among other online sources… But Pimsleur is the only one that has ever really made it click in a way that I can do it literally every day whenever I walk my dog. I guess my one complaint would be that since it’s kind of an older app (all the recordings are from around 2010), I wish I could use Siri to just be like “hey please play Pimsleur unit three lesson one for me,” however even without that capability the app is really easy to use and it’s really rewarding seeing yourself progress and your stand stuff better as you get further and further into each unit… big brain

Update for the world of 2024. This feedback is specifically for the content of the daily lessons for the Brazilian Portuguese course. I don’t know about other languages, but the content (scripted dialogues) for Brazilian Portuguese is very out of date - at the end of each lesson a voice says “copyright Simon & Schuster, 2014”. Meaning these voice lessons were recorded over a decade ago. You’re taught via scenarios that were relevant to the world of 2014, but not always 2024. There are a lot of anachronisms in the vocabulary so you end up learning words and phrases you’ll never use. A significant amount of the content focuses on a corporate business context that includes formalities and a manner of speaking most people in Brazil don’t use any more. Overall I think the method is a good one and using the app is easy. But if the content were refreshed it would improve the experience.

Very good language learning tool!. I’ve been using the Pimsleur app to learn Castilian Spanish and I must say well done! I’m at intermediate level as of right now after 3 months time of using the app! My Spanish is getting better with time in a nutshell! 🇪🇸🍷 The only constructive criticism 🛠📢🗣 that I have for Pimsleur is the lack of closed captioning on listening sessions for hearing impaired customers. If this feature were to be in place Pimsleur would have more success than it already has as a language app! 🗣🌐 There’s various success stories online using the spaced repetition method which makes it very motivating. ✅📖 I recommend this app for those who are looking for one to specifically speak languages conversationally, Pimsleur definitely has so much potential! 🗣🗺

JUST IN 3 DAYS. My dudes,I’m super surprised on how much I’ve learned in just three days. I was pretty skeptical but I listened and studied the free lesson about two or three times a while back and downloaded it again after months!! To my surprise that little bit that I learned stuck with me throughout this entire time and I was able to pronounce at least those phrases and words pretty well. So I went ahead and got the month premium and it’s only 20 bucks. Which I think is super worth it because the amount I have learned and the fact that my pronunciation is on point now while I’ve been studying this for a while mind blows me! 🤯if your self studying I recommend this also don’t forget to study with other materials as well because there’s also writing and reading that you have to learn!

Effective learning method. I’m on my 12th week (on lesson 22/30) into the French 1 program. Spending about 30-60 min a day listening to the lessons (primarily during my work commute). The program is very effective as long as you invest the time. I usually review each lesson a number of times in order to master the material before moving on to the next. The reading assignments (flash cards, quick match, etc) are complimentary to the audio, and an important element to the overall learning process. I have expanded significantly my French vocabulary, ability to speak in phrases, and my language comprehension. I still have a long way to go, but I am convinced the Pimsleur app is the most effective learning method for me.

A wonderful way to learn, but slow down!. Throughout each lesson, you’ll be given a word or phrase to repeat, with a pause in between to speak out loud. Some people don’t pick up pronunciation and cadence as quickly as others, and others might take a little longer to translate in their mind before they translate from their mouths. Some languages take a little extra effort to learn than others. Of course, you can always pause the video, but if you’re like me, you’re probably listening and practicing while doing other tasks and can’t constantly pause and play. It’s frustrating when I’m in the middle of answering a question posed by the speaker only to be interrupted. It throws me off and frustrates me. Maybe consider a feature to slow down the speaker or allow a little more time to answer. Otherwise, I’ve got no issues.

Constant compliments for pronouncing like a native speaker. I have used Pimsleur off and on for the last 15 years. I love it because I can multitask- I can work at the office, drive, walk the dog, clean, etc all while learning or refreshing my language learning. I don’t have to stare at a screen or look at my phone while using it. Best of all, I always receive compliments on my pronunciation from native speakers when I use Pimsleur. I learn faster and continually better with audio learning than all other types so far- and I have used Berlitz, Duolingo Rosetta Stone, Rocket, Italki (which I highly recommend btw), Busuu (another one of my favourites) as well as college classes. Honestly? Pimsleur is the one that works best for me when it comes to pronunciation, speaking and learning. Downfalls: You will have to make an effort to merely being stuck with certain phrases- outside of class, you will need to try replacing some phrases on the fly to keep it fresh. Grammar- it could use more when it comes to learning grammar rules. It introduces it a little here and there, but it would be great if they had more grammar as a little lesson in writing that comes along with each audio lesson.

Great app and conversational tool. For the longest time I’ve always wanted to work on learning Hebrew, but many of the other apps and courses out there just test you by memorizing words. Pimsleur, on the other hand, provided me with all the conversational tools I needed in order to be able to get down the basics of Hebrew. The 30 minute long courses help a lot with wording, and the flash cards/tests help a lot too (I highly recommend the full premium subscription for the most at your disposal). I’ll admit that sometimes it can be confusing if words are difficult to understand through the audio, but with time and repetitive daily practice that obstacle can be overcome. So all in all, I would say the app is very very handy if you want to learn a new language!

Really works well when you commute by car. I find the Pimsleur method really effective, especially if you’re focused on speaking the language. This is because it doesn’t require any reading or writing and since I have a long drive for my commute, I would play the program and I can recite it without getting any funny looks. The app itself has flash cards and other interactive features but it’s not really enough if you also want to focus on reading/writing. Each lesson is around 30 min so it’s short enough not to be too overwhelming. If you’re getting ready to go on vacation to a foreign country, I think this program is perfect to take 1-2 months prior to your trip. I have used it for French and now learning Japanese!

Effective learning method. Even though I believe I learn better with visual aids, I believe that learning a language is better by hearing and speaking. I’ve read complaints about not learning how to read and write but even as young children first learn a language the typical child doesn’t learn to read and write in the first 5-6 years that they are learning the basics of their mother tongue. I’m pleased so far with the course and the method. Update: I can’t believe I’ve learned so much so fast. My wife is a Filipina and even she is impressed and happy at how much I have learned. I also have a friend at work that says I sound like a Filipino. I am going slow and am only on lesson 12 as I write. I hope another level is added.

The Best program for Most languages.. I’m not sure if this is the best program for certain tonal languages. Those are a nightmare to learn no matter how you learn them, though. But I’ve used pimsleur for multiple Romance languages, hebrew, and now Indonesian. And every time I shoot off a phrase to a native speaker they compliment me on my pronunciation/accent. It used to be fairly expensive as a single purchase so I’d have to just check out whatever was at the library, but now that everything is online it’s totally worth the 7 or 17 (I honestly can’t remember or care, it’s less than 20 a month, for sure) to have any of the languages and all the levels. Plus it’s just 30 minutes a day. And now they’ve got writing assignments (at least on Indonesian, it’s the only one I’ve used since getting the app). Which is a cool improvement over audio cd’s from the library. But just 30 minutes and it’s just listening and repeating. You could do it in the bathroom in the morning if you had a waterproof speaker. So yeah. If you’re actually reading this and looking for an easy way to get into a language I’d say this is the best one. Just be sure to really try and make yourself sound like the native speakers in the audio. Even if you have to repeat a few lessons to do it right.

Makes a huge difference.. I listen to Pimsleur on the app on my way to and from work each day. I am learning Japanese through Duolingo, books, flash cards, Rosetta Stone, etc. as well. However doing these Pimsleur lessons has been a huge leap forward in my understanding of the language and my confidence. I feel like I am having full conversations in Japanese each day, and I have to practice listening and responding. This has filled me with confidence for speaking to real people later. It also has sped up my learning. At first I struggled to put my thoughts in order and respond to the lesson before the answer was given. Over time, my ability to translate what i want to say has gotten faster and faster thanks to the Pimsleur lessons. Overall this program is probably the best step I have made forward in my pursuit of learning Japanese.

Works well for me. Pimsleur - Language Learning Spanish has helped me with my conversation skills. I usually prefer seeing the written form of everything that I am learning while studying a language, but find that while I still “need” to see the written form at some point (I subscribe to the Premium version and complete the exercises after each lesson or find translations if necessary), the Pimsleur lessons require that I focus on speaking and mimicking and consequently, I think that my conversational skills are improving rapidly. I have taken very beginning level Spanish classes and used Duolingo off and on so I do have some knowledge of Spanish grammar which I know assists me while studying the Pimsleur lessons. I can’t speak to whether or not I would enjoy the Pimsleur lessons as much if I had had no exposure to Spanish, but I am very happy with the progress that I think I am making with these lessons.

Love this language learning system/program.. I’ve been learning French and am a true blue beginner w no prior French learning or any language learning experience. I love this program! It allows you to be able to hear and put together your own sentences from what you’ve learned, helping you to use your knowledge so you can start configuring verbs and speaking from the beginning. The only thing I would like to see done differently, is to have a transcript of the actual questions and responses. Additionally, if I could write/type out what my answers are it would help to learn how to write the vocabulary/sentences learned better instead of having multiple choice which tends to be a no brainer. Other than that I still recommend this program to anyone!

Yeah, but…. I’ve had the opportunity to get through a chunk of Romanian lessons and they’re great. This is a great method of learning if you need to actually converse with other people in their language. Other apps teach a lot of vocabulary but that’s about all. My problem with Pimsleur is every “special” deal is the same thing: get unlimited access to all 50-something languages for the low low price of whatever. Who needs access to all 50 languages at once? I’ll never pay that much but here we are through yet another Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Christmas present-buying spending spree and every week I get the same damned offer from Pimsleur. How about giving folks an ACTUAL screaming deal on a single language? And no, $20/mo is not a deal…

One of the best resources available. I’m told that the quality of this app varies with the language. I’m studying Japanese, so consider this a review of the Japanese course. Pimsleur has been by far the best resource I have found so far when it comes to getting yourself speaking and have found the app giving exactly the experience advertised. I’m picking up the grammar intuitively, building sentences from vocabulary I’ve learned elsewhere, and am frequently complimented by native speakers in my pronunciation and pace of learning. This app trains recall, not recognition, which is extremely important (and more difficult) if you want to use the language. Most resources only train recognition. This is absolutely worth the money. The only con is the lessons are a bit dull. There are two additional factors to the benefits I’ve gotten from the app. First: I also use WaniKani and spend a lot of time with native speakers (and you should do these too), additional practice and study outside of the app is essential to really get anything out of it. Also Pimsleur does nothing to help with reading and writing, it’s only speaking and listening. Second: This is my second foreign language, so I’m already used to learning a new language.

One of the best apps for language acquisition. I started off my journey of learning Spanish with Duolingo and mad it quite far however I was still not about to construct sentences, speak or really follow a conversation. After completing most of Pimsleur Spanish one I can hold a low level conversation, speak with better accuracy and generally follow conversations better. My Spanish still needs a lot of work but in just 2 months of Pimsleur I am far more of an effective Spanish speak than after 6 months of Duolingo. My only suggestion for the developers would be to integrate more teaching tools like the ability to get assistance from a tutor in the app. Along with some listen only lessons for more language input. I really like the program and will say it is definitely worth the subscription.

Best of the language apps I’ve tried. I am taking on Greek, which is a very difficult language to learn. Many years ago I learned both French and Italian in an intensive professional setting up to a level of workplace competence. In both instances, it was very important that the method of acquiring comprehension and fluidity interleaved hearing, speaking, and reading. I am pleased that this app also offers multiple layers within each unit. Pronunciation is easier when I can see the word written out, and although there is no correction of my pronunciation, the set up on the app makes it easy for me to hear a phrase repeatedly, see the spelling of the words in both alphabets, and compare my pronunciation to that of the native speaker in the app. Well done.

Great Learning, Sneaky Sales. Pimsleur is an AMAZING language learning program, truly. I’ve loved learning from it. That being said, their sales pitch is sneaky and jumps on the subscription service bandwagon. It takes some sleuthing to find the option to outright by the program instead of subscribing to it. Subscribing runs $20 (I think) a month, and purchasing runs $120 for 30 lessons. It seems expensive until you consider that those 30 lessons are paid for in 6 months of subscribing. If you stop subscribing, you lose access. If you buy, you have access for life and can always return to the lessons to practice. It was a no brainer for me to purchase instead. It’s difficult to find on the site, it’s clearly hidden. I bought the program 6 months ago and I’ve loved every moment of learning on it.

Spoke more on 7 days than in a year of college!. I spoke more Japanese out loud in the 7 day free trail period than I did in a year of Japanese college courses. Don’t get me wrong I loved my in person classes and wish to take more BUT this app got me to spit it out and stop over thinking! I made a goal to not ever pause and I was surprised at how much I was actually retaining. It is true though that if you stop, you forget so only allow one day off in between lessons! Try to do it everyday while you’re commuting or allow yourself a bath break. I would do my lesson right as I got into bed and would stare at the ceiling and speak loudly into my dark room. Kept me from getting distracted! I love this app. Just finished day 30 of level 1! Totally worth the $$$ (if you use it)!

Good content, poor execution.. I’ve been using Pimsleur‘s to learn Spanish while I drive. The lessons are great and I have been able to learn Spanish during my commute. The content of the language lessons is very good. My only feedback for the lessons them selves are maybe slightly longer pauses, Or maybe being able to set The length of the pause. However, the reason I can no longer support this application is the app itself. The app is super clunky. It’s slow to navigate, the rewind and fast-forward feature works about one out of every five times I try it. Trying to spin the dial to rewind the lesson either doesn’t work or picks up as a sideswipe. Up until the last update I was able to use Apple CarPlay although not very well. Normally I would have to press play twice in order to get the lesson to continue after pausing it. Since the update it won’t play at all. I can’t justify paying $20 a month for an app that barely functions. I’d recommend investing some of my money into an app that works better especially with CarPlay.

You will learn to speak in another language. Though you will not attain fluency through this app, that being defined as the capacity to perform all necessary activities (:reading, writing, arithmetic, etc.,) you will, quickly, become competent to perform basic daily speaking activities in your target language, and, from that good starting place, work toward fluency using other resources. In that respect, the app delivers what it says it will, and more effectively than others, though the price be steep, it is worth it for languages quite different from your own native tongue. If you speak English and would like to learn Spanish or French, you probably don’t need to pay so much as this app costs to learn such similar languages. However, if you intend to learn Russian or Chinese, with English as your primary language, then you will definitely receive a great boost through this app, if used in conjunction with other resources, namely, a tutor via italki or other such platforms. All in all, if you intend to learn another language, strive to use all of the best resources your budget allows because time is limited and you can’t earn more by sitting on your wallet.

Best Language App. this app goes above and beyond when it comes to learning how to confidently speak another language while making the process fun and easy at the same time. it’s so easy to stick with it and the pronounciation lessons and voice coach has helped me perfect my dialect and sound like a native speaker. the way it teaches language is very intuitive and feels natural. Instead of teaching a vocab words in isolation like most language apps do, this app has a very well structured program that helps you understand the structure of the spanish language and the order of verbs, adverbs, the subject, nouns, etc., so that when you learn new vocab words, you know exactly how/where they would be used in a sentence.

Perfect app for languages!. If you want to truly learn and understand a language, or simply just learn a few words and phrases, It would be a complete missed opportunity to not use pimsleur! I’m writing this to not let anyone out on an amazing opportunity- pimsleur certainly is way cheaper than taking lessons, but it’s way better too (in my opinion)! I’m currently taking the Japanese course and just finished level 23. If you don’t do a lesson every day, every week, or even go a month or so, you can catch up quick! At the beginning of each lesson they have a quick review over what you learned in the last lesson or two. The app also lets you go back to the topics and phrases you’ve learned so far. The app gives you new vocabulary, and shows you how to formulate sentences by explaining how to use things and why they’re there (such as different particles and words)

Meets a specific need in language learning. Pimsleur is perfect for people who have memorized some vocabulary and begin to sense the limitations of those kinds of apps. It helps mentally shift from translating individual words to actually thinking in the new language. I’m very conscious of my pronunciation, and after I’ve memorized most of the vocabulary being used in a Pimsleur lesson, it feels great to “play” with meaningful sentences, and match to the speaker’s pronunciation. Each lesson contains a useful, common conversation scenario that you can delve into. A narrator breaks down the parts and reasoning as you practice. Then variations of the sentences and related phrases are brought in. For me, the variations are just right to keep it interesting and help me grasp verb tense, singular/plural and gender features of the language. But it comes with a nice balance of repetition so the pace doesn’t distract from full comprehension. I couldn’t use Pimsleur alone, I need to study the vocabulary first so that I’m ready to keep up with the narration. But I’d be at a loss without Pimsleur’s help to move forward. And lots of apps will get you vocabulary practice (my favorite right now is drops), but Pimsleur is unmatched in getting you to think in your new language. Right now the most enjoyable part of my Spanish practice.

New to a language? This is what you need.. Rosetta Stone is fundamentally flawed in the way it teaches languages. It wants to teach you like a baby learns, by thrusting you head first into seemingly pointless situations and asking you to learn by immersion. This is actually pretty impossible unless you spend about 4 hours a day doing it for a long period of time. Think about it, a baby is immersed 24 hours a day in a new language, not 30 minutes to an hour! This just makes for a very frustrating learning experience where you actually don’t learn anything. I learned more in 1 week of Pimsleur than I did in 3 months of “immersion”. If you are already good at the language I guess Rosetta Stone can help, but why even go there at that point. I pretty much consider it a scam now :(

App is great on the go but not on iphone6. The app works fine until you actually buy the lesson. Then is crashes constantly. You have to re-download the app to get the lesson to play. Took them a while to get back to me. Oh, when I first tried to purchase the monthly and it failed to charge my PayPal account, I called Pimsleur customer service and the person told me “Well we aren’t PayPal.” Really? You’re not PayPal? Glad we got that out of the way. How about trying to help with the problem instead of being rude? Not helping. Then I bought lesson One outright and it starts crashing. Save your money or just keep the app open. Re-opening on iPhone 6 will require re-downloading the app to make it work. Or you’ll need to upgrade your phone, but a very good lesson especially on the go when driving. I’ll continue with Pimsleur.

Review. I’m not nearly as quick-witted as the instructions say I should be. A new lesson every day? Move to the next lesson when I’ve reached 80% mastery of the current lesson? How about two weeks on the same lesson before I move to the next. None the less, I started with Pemsleur before my second tour to Afghanistan. Sentences from Pemsleur popped into my head for use in sprinkling with Pashto to demonstrate my interest in that culture. Before going to France, It gave me a kit bag of sprinkles. Now, I am Pemsleurring Mandarin and have been for some time. That the new app has the dialogue written down is very useful and should be well-advertised for slow-student help. Succinctly, it’s a good hobby for me in spite of my poor short-term memory.

Refreshing. As someone who has tried to learn other languages (unsuccessfully) before on apps like Duolingo or Rosetta Stone. It is refreshing to see that there is an app like this out there. Pimsleur is the happy medium. Duolingo started off too slow and a bit childish. the the app was a more game like learning style making it more of a rapid fire matching game of random things than a language course. Rosetta Stone on the other hand starts you off faster ,but at a higher learning stage than a beginner would desire. Pimsleur swoops in like “hey there here are some things I know you don’t know. But let’s break them down together and have you understanding and speaking faster. Side note: you will want to read up on any writing forms in the lessons as the course is more of an auditory one with visual study tools under it. This only applies if you desire to write in the language to.

What a pleasant surprise. Wow! This app is SO well executed, and I am completely surprised. I have a car, and do my lessons in the car, so I was searching for an old set of the CDs on ebay--I *really* thought the app would be bad. I resisted a long time. This is one of those rare occassions where the app exceeds expectations. The UX is spot. on. Which is pretty incredible. I'm so impressed. It's a great product. Also, the content has been updated to reflect the current linguistic environment, which I didn't know. Pimsleur is not only the best method of language learning, but clearly the company is on the right track. That other, free app starting with a D is just a game. You will actually be able to speak, use, and understand a foreign language with Pimsleur. If you actually want to learn a language and not just play around, Pimsleur is totally, totally worth it.

Good but very dated. I've used Pimsleur to start learning several different languages, mostly for travel, and nothing compares to it in terms of rapid retention and perfect pronunciation (I've been complimented numerous times for my correct pronunciation of French, Spanish, and Greek). However, there are times I cannot get past how frankly sexist the scripts are. I'm currently seven lessons into Vietnamese and every last one has been from the perspective of a man ("Imagine you're an older American man talking to a younger Vietnamese woman," which given the history of American men's relationships with Vietnamese women is a little awkward to begin with). Or another frequent scenario: "Suppose you're an American businessman meeting with a Venezuelan colleague. You go to his office but he's not there, so you speak to his secretary, Julia." Ugh. It's unbelievably off-putting, to the point that I get angry every time the "Suppose..." scenario is introduced. Maybe it's time for some updates, folks.

IMPRESSIVE. If you commit to learning any of the languages on this app on a daily basis you will be amazed. I'm in the middle of level one Spanish and I feel like I'm learning 10 times faster than I did in high school Spanish class. This app is convenient because you don't have to commit 30 minutes at a time solely to sit down and study. I say this because I usually take classes when I am doing mindless activities during the day such as driving to work, showering, or folding laundry. I can't speak for other foreign language applications or programs, but if you want to learn the basics of most languages in the time frame of 2 months then this is definitely worth the money. But you better stay committed! Even if you take off for a few days it is very easy temporarily forget a good amount of vocabulary.

Great app. Honestly the way that this app teaches other languages, it’s amazing, way better than any school system could ever imagine of getting to. Currently I’ve learned enough of my language to converse with natives and I’ve only been learning for 3 months now, of course there’s bumps in understanding a native compared to myself, but it’s ridiculously easy and I highly recommend learning 32 lessons and periodically watching shows in your native language with and then without subtitles since that’s a great way to see how much you truly have learned. It recommends 1 lesson a day so as long as you have 30 minutes to spend a day, even if it’s after your busy day right before bed, you definitely need to take the time, the results are amazing.

Sub Par Experience. Just a fair warning to anyone looking at purchasing this app to learn French. The lessons were easy to follow and seemed to be working. I felt confident in my skills until I actually got to Paris and couldn’t understand much of anything that was being said. Not enough instruction on basics like ordering food and general conversation. I think the language on the app was probably too formal. I also have been charged 3 times since cancelling my subscription and they will not refund the 3 months of subscription. I sent a message on the app to cancel my subscription, they sent a message with a link with instructions to cancel through the settings on my phone, I followed their directions and was still charged again. When I saw my account was charged again today, I called them and they refused to refund even the charge that was made just hours ago. This is not good customer service. Very disappointed.

Outdated teachings to a degree. What I love about this app is that it is very helpful with pronunciation. This is why I keep it and pay for it, even though I feel that it is fairly expensive for what it is. My issue, is that things are fairly dated and need to be updated. They have me going through over ten minutes of asking for a telephone book in 2023 in another language. It’s a waste of time, you guys need to update to THIS decade of what is necessary to be learned. No one is asking for a telephone book these days usually. Also it’s very important to have exercises that keep your interest and these are fairly redundant. I do also wish there was more explaining of notes of some kind to explain when to you certain words for past tense, present and future. Therefore I use another app to learn the same language, yet I’m paying $20 a month for this one.

Poor UX. The service itself is phenomenal! But the app on any device definitely needs work. 1. You can easily download lessons, but offloading the app is a bit more challenging that it feels like it should be. 2. Once you’ve started a lesson, scrubbing backwards or forwards is a lot more difficult than it needs to be (in terms of the app registering your touch). If you’re reading this Pimsleur, definitely add a button that jumps back to the beginning of the lesson. 3. I’m currently learning Portuguese. Transitioning from Lvl 1 to Lvl 2 wasn’t super seamless. There was some obvious continuity failure. Lvl 2 started off assuming I knew vocab that hadn’t been gone over in Lvl 1 and retaught other vocab I had already learned. Other than this, it’s truly an amazing service. It’s helping me learn much faster and more naturally than any other language learning software i’ve tried.

Great tool for learning how to barely get around. Pimsleur might not be the right app for you depending on your language learning goals. I’ve completed an entire course on the app with the goal to become fluent in Tagalog, so let me share what results Pimsleur has given me and the cons: 1.)The app lacks effective “active listening” exercises, and I still can’t understand casual conversation when someone speaks to me despite being at the end of a course. 2.)The app fails to incorporate the modern and realistic usage of vocabulary; I find myself consistently being corrected on my vocabulary by native speakers. (They DO understand what I mean, but it’s simply the wrong way.) However, Pimsleur DOES meets the fundamentals of it’s mission as a language learning app: 1.)I am able to participate in basic conversations in essential situations: buying/shopping, meal time, asking for directions and the time. 2.)The app also engages and immerses users through it’s main lessons in a way that empowers them to continue to learn a language. Pimsleur’s lessons are primarily conversational, so it’s thrilling to immediately hear and participate in conversations in the lessons. Thus, if your goal is to know the VERY basics of a language, or you need to know how to participate survival conversations then Pimsleur is a great tool for you. However, Pimsleur will not grant you a greater level of fluency than that.

Actually useful language learning app. Now while i have only ever done the first lesson for japanese (because it was free and i cant continue since im young and dont have my own money) i can tell you that it definitely worked. i did the lesson almost a year ago and i still remember AND use what ive learned. After the lesson i watched a few of Ikennas videos (very cool guy. recommend watching his videos too) along with some other VrChat videos and was able to confirm that “..わかります..” was infact, i understand. There were some other things ive learned ive also confirmed and was glad it actually worked and wasnt google translate language. im going to try and get a subscription for the rest of the lessons to do Japanese (and russian since my mom is from russia) and hope to get to at least conversational level. definitely do recommend but cant give a full 5* because i havent used this app to its fullest.

So much better than the competition!. I have been using Pimsleur off and on for about a year now. I am so much more impressed with Pimsleur than the other language apps. I sometimes had trouble deciphering what Rosetta Stone wanted from me. I’ve also tried Duolingo and it wasn’t for me. Pimsleur is very straightforward and I find myself retaining what I learn. I do pay for the premium subscription, but you get many incredible helpful tools! While I’m working or driving, I find myself oftentimes going over how to say new phrases based on what I’ve learned. It’s true that you aren’t just learning a bunch of random words and phrases, you are actually learning how to speak your chosen language! I cannot recommend this enough!

Really helps with being fluent!!!!. I am learning Tagalog because my boyfriend is Pilipino and this app is helping me out tremendously. Now I’m the one with the funny accent lol. After day 3, I’m already speaking with him in a simple conversation!!! He told me I have a little accent and I’m very understandable. And I thank this app! They repeat the words so much that I get the correct pronunciation. The reason I rated 4 stars is because I’d also like to learn more Spanish while I learn Tagalog. Not the most user friendly when wanting to learn 2 languages. And also not the most user friendly when you’re already semi good at a language. Difficult to find (if there is even a setting) to change the advancement of a language and not start at level 1. 30 minutes a day with this app and you’ll be talking to your loved ones in NO TIME!

Needs some improvement. I feel there needs to be a way to slow down the main 30 minute lesson. They get to talking really fast and you’re expected to catch everything they say. That’s not reasonable at all. You can slow down the flash cards, why not the main lesson?? Also, if you’re going to have them say stuff, at least put the long sentences they do into the skill section.. I mean these are 2 things that should be basic features… Especially when you’re not speaking your native language and they’re flying thru the sentence. Also there needs to be more reps with the sentences. They’ll say them 1 time super fast and move on to the next sentence. Who is that really helping?? Please please at the very least add a button to slow down the main 30 minutes. That shouldn’t even have to be asked of you…

Very pleased with progress so far!. I just completed Pimsleur’s French Level 1 and am starting Level 2. I am enjoying the Pimsleur approach to teaching French and am very pleased with my progress in the course so far. Pimsleur's attention to the fine details of pronunciation in speaking French (which is quite challenging for me) is exactly the focus that I was looking for. I feel the course is the equivalent of working with a personal native-speaking tutor because I can take the time to focus on concepts that I need to work on, and adjust my time as needed. The excellent structure of the course and the pacing in the introduction of new concepts and the review of old concepts seem to be working for me. I just wish I had more hours in the day to devote to French study! THANK YOU, Pimsleur!

The best app for learning with a busy lifestyle. This app is great for a number of reasons. For starters, you begin right away with learning practical phrases and not just random vocabulary. I’d say by the end of the first 5 lessons (half an hour each), you’re able to speak and understand a useful sentence and understand how to reorganized that sentence in different ways. My job requires me to drive at work and this app is perfect for that. Pick your lesson and then switch to driving mode. There is nothing to read and nothing to follow along with, you just repeat the lesson back to the prompt and it really helps you learn the correct pronunciation. The app does include reading portions, flash cards, and practical practice conversations as well for when you have more free time to engage. Pros -fairly inexpensive for full language learning -easy to use -lesson are not too long (28minutes) -can be used driving or going for a walk -plans can be downloaded for future use with no internet -teaches practical language skills and not just vocabulary Cons -the two guides can sometimes pronounce things differently -some lessons are packed and you’ll need to repeat them a few times

Great learning for speaking. I have just completed the beginner and intermediate courses of Pimsleur Hebrew. These Hebrew lessons are excellent for learning to converse in Hebrew; converse in actual conversation. The native speakers do not slow down or “dumb down” the language. I am thoroughly enjoying this app. However.......I think these lesson (beginner and intermediate) are way too difficult for absolute beginners. I took about 7 months of Rosetta Stone before starting this program. Rosetta Stone teaches way more vocabulary but lacks in learning to converse like a native speaker. Pimsleur teaches way more survival skills, sentence structure and conversation but lacks in a lot of vocabulary. However i have just completed the beginner and intermediate courses, and have not started on the advance course yet. So that vocabulary may still come in the advanced section. All in all a great program if you already have some Hebrew background. Addendum: I have completed the entire course. I still give this course a five star rating. Great for speaking. It was very business oriented. I just wish it was more oriented for the general public. Disappointed that there is not even a more advanced course in Hebrew. Thoroughly enjoyed it and was ready for more.

This is great 10/10. While I can’t speak for everyone, this helped me more than Duolingo ever could. It helps teach you basic conversation instead of random foods, this way when you actually need to communicate, YOU CAN. It has many ways of studying as well, such as flash cards, quick quizzes, etc. You can also have conversations! While it is only a part of the recorded lesson, you get plenty of time to respond like you would in the real world. They also do a great job of reviewing what you’ve learned throughout the lessons. Sadly it is a bit expensive, either $20 per month for all the lessons or a permanent purchase for around 160 dollars. However I’m unclear if this is the case for all the languages, since I’m only learning one. I say enjoy!

One major issue. I would give 5 stars because, generally speaking, I really like this program. It’s the best one I found so far for me. However, I do have one issue related to the flashcards, which is the reason for 4 stars. As the lessons progress, the flashcards begin to contain words from previous lessons; even very simple words that, in my opinion, don’t merit review. If I go back to previous lessons (like #3, 4, etc) to look for specific vocabulary, the flashcards now contain words from all lessons I’ve completed (Four instance, through lesson #16). I think the flashcards for a new lesson should only contain new words from that particular lesson to reinforce new content. I have not been able to find a place that has only the new words in a particular lesson. I spoke to a representative from Pimsleur and the response was essentially, “I’m sorry you’re having trouble, but that’s the way it is...maybe it will change in the future.“

Great language app. I really like the Pimsleur approach. It’s speak (and listen) first—learn details later. I think that works particularly well if you have some grammatical grounding in the language. (Such as have taken a class at some point). Their latest feature is Pronunciation Challenge. The app shows you the sentence in English and then you record yourself speaking it in the language you are studying. It then rates how well you did and notes where you fell short. This feature is the main review I use and it works surprisingly well. It does the trick of making you annunciate the language more than you normally do when studying on your own. I find myself progressing much better than in day Duolingo which is also good but not as thorough or developed. I’m studying Italian but have also used Pimsleur for Japanese.

Language Update Issue. Update: I sent an email to that email after I spoke to the agent over the phone a few days before I posted my review, and nobody replied. The agent told me to email Pimsleur. I also messaged within the app. I have been waiting for over a week. I got nothing. I have been quite patient. I’m not in the best mood right now. I called customer support, which was of no help; I emailed with screenshots; I also put a message/gave feedback in the app itself and I still haven’t gotten a reply. I have purchased lifetime premium editions for many of your language courses (all levels), and I found a problem with one of them. Japanese (Premium ) Levels 1,2 and 3 I saw got updated. I noticed I still have the old one. Why hasn’t mine been updated. I purchased Levels 1-5 Premium lifetime editions. Am I going to have to shell out another $450 for those updates? I made a full purchase to not be tied down to a subscription. I don’t know what else to do.

AMAZING. Now to state I picked up this app for fun. I wasn’t serious about it I just wanted to copy a few words and impress friends with it. But this app is literally skyrocketing me in Japanese. I can say FULL sentences and speak the language! I’m also a beginner in Korean too! I love this app it’s so simple to learn and their teaching style is amazing. Not to mention the challenge pronunciations so I can try to say it myself. I am honest when I’m saying this I wasn’t going to pay 20 dollars to keep learning but it’s WORTH it. I love this app and I go to learn everyday as long as you have the drive this is going to teach you! Get itttttt but only if your willing to pay 20 dollars because when you get to that first lesson your going to want to learn it all in one day. Pretty fun to speak in different languages too! ❤️❤️
