Redpoint: Bouldering & Climb App Description & Overview

What is redpoint: bouldering & climb app? This is the best app to track your climbing and boulder sessions automatically. Redpoint gives you detailed overview and feedback on your ascents.

Use your Apple Watch or iPhone as a fitness tracker for bouldering and climbing. Contribute your climbing session to closing your daily rings! Workouts are stored in HealthKit and therefore visible in the Health app and Workouts app as well.

After each session you will see detailed information about your climbs: the overall height, your heart rate, duration, maximum ascent height, ascending speed, difficulty of routes, and most importantly: Redpoint will give you personalized training suggestions based on that data. How to go from V4 to V5? Or from 5.11b to 5.11c? Redpoint creates a training plan just for you to achieve your next climbing goals.

So, how does that work?
Thanks to highly advanced machine learning we are able to classify climbing movements right on Apple Watch. In addition to that we use the built-in barometer to measure the ascended altitude. You can track the difficulty of ascended routes right from the Apple Watch.

Great App with some Requests. Really enjoy the app and it does the majority of things I need and want. One thing I would like to see would be the ability to switch between climbing disciplines without having to end the session and start a new one. Another app I used, Pinnacle did this and it was an amazing feature.

Needs Updates. It is a functional app but has issues. The one that affects me the most is switching between top rope/sport climbing to bouldering. The app will register I changed the type of climb but will retain the rating system from the first choice ie if I start bouldering, then switch to top rope, top rope attempts would be logged with the V system. I don’t have any faith that doing it that way would track correctly, so this requires ending a session and starting a new one every time I switch. Outdoors this isn’t an issue at all but at my favorite gym I have bouldering, top rope and lead available and friends who do a little bit of each so it’s very common for me to do all 3 in a session. Please fix I want to keep supporting the app but would like to see an update!

It’s okay but could be so much more. I used it for the first time tonight and it worked okay. It missed a couple of climbs and it added a few for no reason. I would love to be able to log the grade of climb V5 or 5.11 depending on style and it would be nice to remove attempts from the overall number.

Getting buggier and buggier. - altimeter doesnt work anymore - randomly switches bet ft and m - can’t really add/edit ascents, changes dont stick - crashes when trying to open settings on phone - developer unresponsive to email

Editing issues. Just tried this app today and compared the results with what I knew I did. It was easy to use the app with the watch when you were currently climbing - it detects a climb, you select the grade and tick type. However, I started the app late and wanted to add some climbs. The app would not save the additional runs in the logbook (despite clicking save). I also wanted to change the grade type for a couple of them, and it wouldn’t save that info either. There is also an option to hide the run (deleting and altering altitude is in progress), but when I select hide, the app crashes for me. I hope the developers fix this issue, and I will change rating to 5 stars.

Not tracking ascent. I like the idea of the app but when I do bouldering it doesn’t track my ascent, it only tracks after I’ve put in the level (ie, v4). Is this how it’s suppose to work?

Not for Me I guess. I’m a Boulderer with an Apple Watch so was excited to see this. Weird tracking though. What boulderer tracks total ascended distance as a core metric? As far as I can see you can’t track climbs by grade—the most obvious feature to include in my opinion. Decent looking interface though so I’ll give it 2 stars

Great App. Great app, and I appreciate that it connects to my Apple Watch. I’d love to see an option in the future to show progress over time in a line graph or something similar!

Great app, fun to see progress. I love using this app to keep track of my sends and how I’m improving. The watch app is great and allows me to climb without having my phone. Other users have requested a multi discipline climbing session, and I would also love that. The only other thing that’s missing that I would love is a complication, even if it’s just a shortcut to the app, for the infographic faces on the series 4 Apple Watch.

Fantastic App. One thing that would be really cool would be something social built in like Strava (before Strava does it). My only gripe is the climber on the analytic Dashboard when you share to something like IG. I think the dashboard as a whole could use some rework to make it look more modern. Look at examples from Tableau software or Salesforce Analytics. The colors on the current dashboard are generic rbg and too harsh on a black background.

Great app, looking forward more improvements. Great app and fun for tracking. Some Improvements i would like to see Its pretty bad at tracking ascended distance telling me the ascent was only 3 feet. Or 10ft. For a top rope or sport. Also when i switch disciplines to bouldering it does not Give me the correct grades but still in 5.10. I have to end the work out and start a bouldering session in order to have the correct v scale grading. Exciting to see this develop more.

Will there be an update for long term activity tracking?. Love this app! It’s great for keeping me motivated and able to see progress over time. The height and time climbing is great to be able to see and motivates me to get a few extra routs in to push myself. When will there be an update though? The long term tracking doesn’t change when you shift the tab between “overall - last year- last month” Besides that it’s great, highly recommend 👌🏼

Love this but needs some work. Love Redpoint, I use is every session. There are some reliability issues though. Today in particular both my climbing partner and I attempted to use the “switch disciplines” feature from ropes to bouldering but the grades available for us to select did not change from YDS to Hueco. Overall though it’s a great app that does what it says on the tin.

Did not save session properly. Used it for my bouldering session for the first time this morning. Although the app was great during it, it did not save the season properly on my watch, losing the last climb, and it did not save a workout event in the iOS workout app. I will try again to see if it was just a one-time issue.

Good, but battery problems. Nice, but seems to crush Apple Watch battery

App working again. Updating review after fix. Great app after the fix. Have been using it for a few years and it’s great.

A nice basic app but needs some UI work. Logs climbs (on ropes) accurately enough. Nice integration with the Apple Watch. Unfortunately, the app interface is a little wonky. Data isn’t displayed on remotely useful axes, there’s no easy way to delete individual climbs from sessions or manually alter the “type” of climb if you forgot to switch from top rope to lead, etc. Generally useful and insightful to use, but without solid data visualization, it isn’t worth paying for premium. Please tighten up the data vis and user interface for editing climbs and climbing types, combining sessions, and add more insight in the data to make it worth logging the type of climb, ie onsight, flash, red point. Breaking out data by type of climb like top rope, sport, or bouldering needs to be better integrated as well.

Needs some love from the developer recently. This was a five star that I often recommended to fellow climbers looking to track their ascents both inside gyms and outdoors. There are some outstanding bugs related to editing ascents, specifically one that doesn’t allow you to commit the changes properly. Another bug causes the app to freeze when you attempt to switch disciplines. And, ss of March 2024, the altitude recording doesn’t work on a first gen Ultra. This would be a 5 star app if it worked like it used to last year.

Love this app!. This is a great app to capture all of your climbing data! It’s easy to use and provides you with great feedback. My only complaint is that you can’t switch between types of climbing during your session. For example, I top rope and lead climb in the same session, but have to finish a session and start a new one in order to capture the other climbs. It’d be great if I could include them all in the same session. Otherwise...a great app!! Thanks for creating it!

Great Climbing Tracker and Responsive Developer!. I started using this app to track my bouldering sessions in late 2018. Since that time, I’ve submitted several bug reports and feature requests and all have been acknowledged and integrated into the app. I enjoy the app as well as the Apple Watch integration that allows me to mark the rating and success or failure of each ascent without having to mess with my phone while climbing. Keep up the great work!

Great but.... Love this app to track my climbs with my apple watch, and I just bought the year membership it's that good. Just one problem with this new update is that the top grade is now broken. Multiple days I've climbed V5-6 and it says V1 as the top, even if you click inside and you can see you documented a harder climb. Please fix

Really nice, small issues. I really like it for tracking my climbs over time and really see my improvement. However, the long term activity has a lot of issues where the charts get cut off and I can’t do anything about it. Especially an issue when the part that is cut off is the highest grades I climb! Makes it tricky to see if I’m improving

The app stopped tracking ascends… and back again. After the complete silence, the app was updated with a different solution to work around the bug in iOS/watchOS. I’ve used the app today for a sport climbing session. During the first session it still did not record the ascends even if I approved the new permission. I stopped the session, killed the app, started a new session and I was happy to see it working. I haven’t tried it yet for bouldering. I do appreciate getting a fix for the app. I also have to admit that getting an acknowledgment when reporting the issue (and not the radio silence) would’ve made this situation much easier to deal with. I know that for a single person business this might sound like extra effort, but knowing the app is still cared for by a simple “I’m looking into this” response is reassuring.

This app is a great starting point but not perfect. My two biggest gripes with this app are that you can’t delete a session if you accidentally start one by accident. Secondly when using the app on the Apple Watch your climbing grade is stuck with which ever discipline you start your session with. (Start bouldering then switch to top rope and you can only log routes under V scale not YDS). If they fixed this it would be a 5star app

Unusable with latest update. This used to be a solid app I could count on to record progress. Now it doesn’t reliably record routes, and when I try to manually input routes that it fails to detect, it just overwrites the latest route rather than appending a new route to the session. Please fix. I’m a paid subscriber, so I’d like this to be fixed before auto renewing.

Heckin’ sweet brah. I only use the free functions and I still love it! I can see how I’m doing each day and it’s pretty cool to see how you’re progressing. The Apple Watch compatibility is spectacular. 10/10

Perfect. It does an amazing job of automatically tracking my climbs. It’s exactly what I was looking for in a climbing app. Great Apple Watch integration.

App no longer tracks properly. Developer has been emailed twice about this, but climbs are not tracked properly. For instance on the watch I logged 3 climbs, and it still said “1 ascent” in the logbook. The latest update did not fix this even though he said it would so I’ve unfortunately had to move to another app I don’t like as much, but which works. I’d love to come back to this if this bug is ever fixed, but for now it’s not usable.

Great Climbing App!. I've been using Redpoint for about a month now and I'm quite impressed! Tracks routes pretty accurately (with the occasional error) and does so automatically with no need to touch the watch unless you're inputting grade. This app also uses the Action button on the ultra, something I wish more apps would do.

Truly The Best Climbing App. This is one of the best fitness tracking apps I’ve ever used across any discipline. The on-device data analysis and care that the developer has put into data privacy is amazing; I wish it was the standard everywhere. For some reason I’m having trouble following the in app link to add my local climbing gym (possibly because I don’t have the iOS Mail app installed?). Would love to add it if it’s a possibility. Still an excellent experience either way.

Update - March 21 - Working Again!. My previous review stated the app didn’t work, but it looks like it has started working again! Great app for automatically tracking climbs

Was good, now it breaks half the time. Idk what changed, but almost everytime I’m climbing now it stops recording after 2 hours… so the last week of climbing hasn’t recorded one session. Disappointed

Only allows one ascent per session. The app seems to have a bug where it only allows me to add one ascent per session. When I tap add new ascent it overwrites the previous one. The whole reason I downloaded it was to be able to manually add multiple ascents in the same session so it’s unusable for me :(

So far I really like this app. This might be user error, so I apologize if so. I got really confused on tracking my bouldering today. I have had the app for a little while but actually remembered to utilize it today. I used it in such a way that now I realize was probably wrong. I’d find a route press start bouldering slide over to select the grade and begin my ascent. Once I would either succeed or fail I’d end the session and start again on the next one, I’m guessing I actually need to be pausing in between ascents but in that case can I switch grades when I switch routes? I love keeping track of my ascents, but I worry some of them weren’t accurate like it saying I got 9ft when I’d barely get past the start of a problem. I also think that either I barely paid attention to the beginning of the app instructions/tutorial or it could have been clearer. (Again could have just been user error.) All in all I do feel like as I get used to using this app and how to properly use it I’ll enjoy it more. I also realized it needed to be updated so I’m hoping when I go again on Wednesday it’s more accurate since I just updated it.

Fantastic for logging, moderate data visualization and poor data export.. I have had the app since October 2019, I really started using it more since August this year. Pros: SUPER Easy logging, Fantastic Apple Watch integration. I can easily climb a Boulder in the gym and note the grade and it automatically saves altitude, heart rate, calories and time. Training section seems helpful and has good suggestions/ Tipps about rest and getting better. However, it’s not as good as Ascend for logging progression or how many hard climbs you send time. (Or names of routes) It does show how many of each grade you attempt but doesn’t differentiate sends and falls. Cons: Hard to export data, leaderboard feature broken/ displays nothing, long term activity seems slow to update.

App not recognized by watch as compatible. The app does not appear in my downloads section of my watch. Even after a good period of time troubleshooting, it seems the fault is not with my watch. The regular app itself is awesome. What the app provides is really cool. I hope that this gets resolved so I can have it on my watch.

Great app, great tracking, attentive developer. This app is great, I’ve been using it for almost a year now. It allows you to record each climbing session with metrics like total ascended feet, a log of grades/routes climbed, calories, etc. I like the recently added "long-term activity" view, where you can see how much you've climbed by month (not sure the metric used) and what grades you've been climbing overall. Though, the x- and y- scaling in these graphs needs some work, it can't be adjusted effectively and the graphs don't currently show all the information. Some features I would really love to see added/improved to make this a killer app: - multi-disciplinary in the same session: I always warm up before top-roping with a bouldering session, this can currently only be recorded as two seperate sessions. - better strava syncing: I just started using this feature but it's not clear how and when sessions are synced to strava or how to improve reliability. Right now it seems like a 50/50 chance of the session will be uploaded to strava. Having this rock solid would be a huge benefit of this app for me. - faster syncing from Apple watch to iPhone for viewing of the session after completing it I highly recommend this app.

Buggy, but functional. The core climbing tracking works well, but the app is buggy. Every time I open the app I get two pop ups to turn on health tracking, and workouts are not being recorded to the activity app.

Keeps restarting itself. I really like the idea of this app and want to use it but the tracker keeps restarting itself. I’ll climb for 10 minutes, do like 8 bouldering ascents and then I’ll check the app and it will only say I’ve done one even though it said 8 a second ago. Is this something I’m doing wrong? How do I fix this?

Great app but some problems behind the paywall. A lot of great functions here and would be happy to give 5 starts if not for the following issues - app crashes when hiding an ascent (would be nice to just delete them) - not able to track projects. You can log each attempt and send with great tags (though no on-site tag) but would be nice to be able to track them in projects for example ( 2 attempts and 1 send on a particular V4) - visual layout of data would be great to see in bar graphs but that’s more nitpicky than anything.

Update fixed tracking issue. App is tracking height again! Happy to use this to track my climbing workouts👍

Appreciate it. Thank you for the update. It works great again.

LOVE THIS APP. Thank you for addressing that bug so quickly for the altitude!!! I have a Vertix 2 I use for running and tried the climbing app on there in the meantime, since there's really nothing else in the App Store that compares to this for distance measurement, and it still didn't log and work as easily and clearly as your app does. Thanks for the work you've put into this!

Love the app so far!. Loving the app and the simplicity of it! My only dilemma is that at my gym we have a second floor that holds 15 ft walls. When I finish a route up there it, for some reason, thinks I climbed 60 ft. I can even start the session on the second floor and the result is the same! If I’m climbing from the first floor it’s fine though. Other than that loving the app so far!

Awesome for training / logging activities- add dry tooling?. Would be awesome if there was a dedicated dry tooling category. There is an M rating but you have to pick between M or WI for ice climbing? No dry tooling section and dedicated D rating.

Suddenly stopped tracking climbs. I love this app and have used it probably since right after it came out. But my last two bouldering sessions it has not recognized most of my climbs. Not sure if something is going on with The app or if it’s my new Apple Watch, but the altitude on the new Apple Watch has been fine on all of my hikes. Help!

Not quite there yet. I love the idea but it was really buggy for me when I tried it. There really is no other climbing tracker for iOS, so if this worked it would be awesome. Maybe if I had a smartwatch, it would be better, but running it on my phone wasn’t working well, so I gave up.

Heart is in the right place but needs work. The idea of automatically tracking ascents is great, and is why I gave this a try, but it works very poorly. In one session it tracked 70+ ascents, and even though I was purposely pausing the tracking while belaying it kept tracking on ascents every few minutes at random. Considering the watch knows when you’re going up and when you’re coming down it shouldn’t be too hard not to add ascents when not moving vertically… and for a climbing specific app it should take into account that at least half the time you’ll be belaying (or resting between attempts if bouldering). It is not clear whether this is accounted for in the final calories/workout tracking. I’ll be looking forward to future versions but right now it shows more promise than ability.

Much better than the fitness climbing workout. I think the app does a great job automatically detecting my top rope and bouldering climbs, as well as providing a reasonable estimate of the number of feet climbed. And I believe the app provides a more accurate estimate of the calories burned than the Apple watch climbing workout.

Almost what I was looking for!. Update: Going to 4 starts for now. App has a bug when switching between type of climbing. Stats shows like all the climbs are made with the first selected climbing type (sport) when I switched in session to top rope. Reported to developers a week ago - no response Another issue. After installing the app, after you stop the session - app will still drain the battery on the apple watch :( Previous Great app, seems like it has everything I was looking for. The only complain, is to be able to switch between the lead and top rope, as I am beginner, doing a few leads, and switch to top rope to learn how to climb more advanced routes for me. I saw that developer claimed that they are working on that already! Which is awesome! Anyway, will give it a try, and definitely will be a pro supporter!

Poor support. I really like the app’ and the concept but syncing to Strava is flaky and unreliable. Having said that, it’s nothing like as unreliable as the developer support - no meaningful response to my emails regarding bugs on several seperate occasions.

Awesome with an Apple Watch. This is exactly what I was after for bouldering. It automatically separates ‘sends’ based on change in altitude so you just hit go and it tracks how many climbs. It does miss some climbs that are close to the ground but tbh thats ok because this is still more accurate tracking than the apple exercise “climb” and contributes to rings.

Almost great. Really nice clean app, super easy to track all your climbs. My biggest gripe is the lack of analytics provided, failed climbs and sends get mixed up a lot in some graphs and there is no easy way to see them compared. Would love to see a success rate for each grade implemented as well as better distinguishing between sends and fails on Strava export

Really solid. This app is fantastic and a really solid companion when climbing. The manual tracking feature is awesome and really keeps you thinking about your climbs pre and post workouts. The newest update really elevated the Apple Watch app and fixed a lot of issues I was having like it randomly saying I climbed 400 yds in one ascend lol that was a strange one. Overall, it’s a great app to help you track your progress and push yourself even further. Current bugs: 1. Apple Music menu in the Apple Watch app crashes the app and doesn’t work if the music isn’t streaming from my iPhone. If I’m using the cellular feature of my watch to stream music the music portion of the app doesn’t work. 2. When I select top rope workout sometimes it shows me the V scale instead of the Yosemite scale when manually tracking a workout. I have to stop the workout and restart then go into the iPhone app to delete the failed workout attempt afterwards. Not a huge deal. Just an annoyance. Somethings I would love to see in future updates: 1. Being able to input a climbing grade in the phone app afterwards if you forgot to manually track it on your Apple Watch. 2. The ability to set preferred climbing methods in the watch app. I enjoy top roping far more than Boulder not that it’s a problem to scroll to top rope, but it be more convenient to have it listed on the top as my preferred workout. 3. Being able to challenge friends when we are working out. It’s fun to see who has ascended the most and to have the app have little challenges between buddies would be awesome. Little rewards and trophies would be a nice touch like how Apple Watch workouts function, but for climbing. Great app that I will always use when climbing and I’m really excited to see what the developer can do with it.

Endless issues syncing with apple health. Useless

Cool but why add the premium account. Why’d u add a premium version???

Gloria. Beautiful charts. Really great information and hints. Great synchronization with I watch.

Great app!. Would love to be able to sync with Strava!

Garbage. This app’s integration with an Apple Watch is complete garbage, constantly disconnects, never stays synced and loses information. Uninstalled.

No watch app. No watch app showing up in watchOS 5.0.1

Doesn't work. After 5 ascents in tells me that I've done 10 Edit: I did email you there!

pretty neat but a few things. i can’t manually add a send but most of the time it records sends really well. the case where i need to add a send is usually after a long break where i hit pause on the watch. Top rope a couple more burn out and then end the session. I can’t make the send grade 5.x, it only has options for boulder grades. I tried to do altitude manually and it wouldn’t save, and it just kept being poop. I’m curious how the QR code scanner works, seems dope. It drains the apple watch, i highly suggest carrying the charger for sport climbing. I would say for a 1 hr sesh on 30% would be perfect, can’t say for certain. you also can’t report these problems to the developer either so i’m gonna have to do the 3 star to see if they will make some improvements. The app is neat and it makes climbing really cool but most of the time i forget to use it.

Neat App. The latest update is WAY more accurate, making this app much more useful.

Only for Apple Watch. Title says it all

Good app for logging! Looking for more analysis.. This app does a great job of logging climbs. It’s fairly easy to use either on my phone or Apple Watch. There is so much potential here for intelligent analysis and visual representation of the data that it leaves me wanting. I was hoping that the developers had devised graphs that captured the important data well. This is harder than it sounds because not all data are important. One idea that came to mind was overlaying heart rate with a line graph showing climbing grades for that session, for example, to create a more informative graph rather than show these two fairly uninteresting things separately. Also, since this app logs different shades of success for each climb (onsight, flash, clean, with rest), I’d think with that richness, it really has the potential to analyze and show progress over time - I’m thinking principal component analysis with linear regression to estimate a climbers actual ability based on the shade of success - but I didn’t see any meaningful infographics to that effect. And for the price point, I was really expecting it. Some feature requests: 1. Can the app intelligently figure out when the climber has left the gym and remind the climber to turn off the app (and also intelligently trim the data so that it doesn’t include the stairs you went up after you got home). 2. Can it sync with the Apple Watch in real time? Even better, can it blend the GPS and barometric data from the Apple Watch with GPS and barometric data from the iPhone to create higher quality data? (The app would need to intelligently detect whether the climber climbed with their phone or left it on the ground). I’m using Pinnacle for now but will keep checking back to see if this app develops further. This app is 5 stars if it were free or inexpensive, but for its price point - an annual subscription fee that rivals that of serious productivity software - I have to give it 3 stars.

Apple Watch fix it. I’m a tree climbing and It doesn’t detect nothing on Apple Watch

Inaccurate Recording. It recorded an ascent when I raised my hands while spotting. By the end of the session, it recorded several more ascent than I actually did.

Redpoint: Bouldering & Climb App Customer Service, Editor Notes:

This update adds a workaround for altitude tracking if you have iOS 17.4 or watchOS 10.4 or newer installed: Unfortunately, Apple introduced a bug with the latest updates which prevents barometric data from being delivered to the device. Instead of waiting for them to fix this, we have introduced a workaround: You now have to grant permission to Motion & Fitness data when you start a new workout. This is only necessary once, and afterwards you should be able to use Redpoint as usual. I am very sorry for this unexpected behavior! On top of that, this update fixes an issue where logging into a TheCrag account could lead to a crash when opening settings.
