Best HN client. Tried all the other HN clients on the App Store I can find and this is the only one that’s been good enough to not go back to bookmarking the website to my home screen. Was even thinking of making my own! Essentially all I want the same behavior / UI / features as Apollo for Reddit. HN is a lot like a subreddit so I prefer not to have rewrite my brain to use it. The tap to collapse comments and true dark mode are the two biggest things thing that were missing on others. Only thing I can think of adding: dark background or more-orange-less-white icon so it looks good in iOS 13 dark mode, and Apollo style swipe to upvote / downvote comments. Worth the $2.99 for sure if the developer can continue to support it. 👍

I use it daily. I’ve been using this almost daily for a few years now. Figured I’d finally give it a review.

Forced two pane layout. The most recent update forces a two panel layout with no ability to go back to a single pane focused view. It takes away a lot of valuable screen estate that could otherwise be used for displaying comments. Super frustrating that it doesn't even have an option for the original layout.

Best client I have used so far. Absolutely the best, most modern HN client I have used. Only complaint would be the animation of collapsing comments makes it a little hard to keep my context, especially if I have already scrolled into a comment.

Super Smooth and Easy to Use. Great app, no complaints. Not sure why so many people are upset that some features are paywalled. Support devs that make great things!

Better Than the Actual Site. With the absolute BARGAIN 1 time premium purchase Octal becomes the best way to consume HackerNews PERIOD. Better than both the mobile and desktop sites with AMAZING, yet minimal and not feature crazy, ways to customize the experience (font size, tweaking how compact the lists are, dark mode, etc). One of the best app downloads, if not THE BEST I’ve ever made.

PPP price Adjustment. The app is really great, I eant to buy premium version but in Turkey, this is a lot of money. Could you adjust prices based on PPP?

Phenomenal App, Amazing Developer. Wow! What can I say, Daniel Wu took less than 24 hours to fix the 3D Touch issue my prior review was about. This app is simple and straightforward. It conveniently connects you to hacker news without all of the spam that many other comparable apps have. I’ve enjoyed many mornings starting off the day glued to Octal as it provides a platform that’s both convenient and elegant. Daniel, keep up the awesome work and thank you so much for the time and effort you have put in. - This Guy

Very nice HN reader. The progress of features, stability and quality is clearly visible over time. Way above average. Much better than many unprofessional apps by big names. It is now my 2nd favorite HN reader, especially for new posts and paywalled links. Very good readability mode. What to improve: responding to a specific comment is non intuitive.

I don’t write reviews.. Never written one, in all my life, as a matter of principle (read: laziness). But seriously, thanks. Fantastic work, very performant and a pleasure to navigate. Keep up the good work mate!!!

Accessibility is not a premium feature. As someone with visual impairments, I'm shocked that you're locking a system feature—dynamic type font size adjustment—behind a paywall. It's basically forcing anyone with vision issues to pay up if they want to use your app.

Best HN app. Been using this app for a little over a year or so. This has proven to be the best HN app on iOS with continuous updates and feature improvements. Keep up the great work!

Almost perfect.... I've really enjoyed my experience with Octal so far and the author has done a great job. Two things would make it much better, though: 1. I often send articles (actually, links to HN discussions) to myself via Gmail, but when doing so Octal doesn't populate the email subject with the name of the article. That means I have to manually type in the name of the article each time if I want to easily pull them up later. i’m hoping this will be a simple fix that the author will consider making happen. 2. The upper buttons could be a little easier to use. Half the times I end up clicking on the article instead. Otherwise, great work. Keep it up and I appreciate it!

Scrolling on comments is a bit laggy. Everything is amazing except this one little issue.

Great HN viewer with smart UX, missing just a few features. I’ve really enjoyed using this app! The experience of reading through linked pages and comment threads is very smooth. There are some optional quality-of-life features that can be toggled in settings (tab refresh, pure-black UI for OLEDs, quick collapse, etc.); these are nice features that really make interacting with the app feel fluid, and enabling users to enable/disable them according to preference is evidence of very thoughtful design. My only (minor) complaint: the app doesn’t seem to respect certain account settings, specifically regarding whether or not to hide “dead”/downvoted comments. It’s not a dealbreaker by any means, but I would appreciate being able to see comments according to my account preferences. Overall, a terrific app - great work!

Favorites are broken. Favorites just don’t show up. Favorite a post and it never shows in the account > favorites section of the app. Pretty solid app otherwise. Wouldn’t mind seeing some markdown highlighting for comments. A way to select text when you have tap anywhere to collapse comment enabled.

Great HN App but one thing. Quick collapse should be enabled by default. New to iPhone and I almost I uninstalled the app thinking I made the wrong choice. Decided to have one unhopeful look through the settings before uninstalling and thankfully the option was there.

Doesn’t work when using a tracking blocker. I use lockdown to prevent apps from contacting trackers. This app doesn’t load pages reliably when it’s turned on. When I turn off tracking protection everything works fine.

Messes up Screen time. Great app, probably the best for HN but it messes up screen time. Multiple times I've noticed that the story links opened through octal show up as constantly open on screen time and adds up total hours. I think it happens only when I close the app through app switcher while the link is still open.

Great app!. This App instantly replaced the other Hacker News app I've had. It looks good, works well. I really wish it had Telegram Night Blue color scheme for alt dark more, it is much easier for eyes.

Disappointed. Disappointed. The developer took away existing features to put behind a paywall. This isn’t a way to get existing users to upgrade.

Too many updates. Considering that we all have to download the entire app each time you make a single change, how about you bulk up the fixes and get them all done in one go rather than piecemealing them out a single change at a time..

Please add the ability to downvote. Great app all around. I purchased the IAP immediately after using it for a few hours. But I would really like the ability to downvote. Perhaps the developer doesn’t have the privilege yet on their account and inadvertently omitted it?

Works very well. This app was one of my best purchases, I use it every day without issue. Would recommend.

Fantastic, some rotation issues on iPhone though.. While viewing the comments section of an article on iPhone in portrait, rotating the device to landscape, and then back to portrait kicks me back to the list feed. While viewing the article list, rotating to landscape, and then back to portrait scrolls the article list down and makes me lose my place. It’s very disorienting, and I don’t usually turn my orientation lock on so it always happens by accident. Other than that, fantastic work!

Great HN app. It’s the best one to use. Latest version is missing the comments button though. Now each story goes to comments instead of the story. Keeping them separate was better as most of the time I want to read the story first.

Great buy!. Fantastic app, very smooth and well executed. My only complaint is the lack of alternative app icons, but this is minor. (Maybe when I have time I’ll just cut a PR to fix it ...)

Please add downvote functionality (:. This is by far the best iOS HN client. I’ve been using it for years now. It would be nice if the downvoting functionality was supported. Occasionally there is a thread where incentivizing community guidelines via downvote is needed (: Great job.

Consider using system icon. Since you only support new iOS versions. I think system icons come with iOS might look better than the one you are using within the app. Also the navigation bar animation is somewhat distracting. I would suggest that you consider using something more native to iOS.

Incredible. Without a doubt, this is the best HN client on iOS. It’s sleek, fast, and there are plenty of settings to tweak if you so desire. And no ads! The developer also seems very responsive to feedback - I posted a tiny styling issue to Octal’s github and an update with a fix was pushed to the App Store in less than 72 hours. I’d love to see some custom icons in the Premium version down the line, but that’s about the only nitpick I can find, and I found it to be worth the price already without them!

By far the best Hacker News app!. If you read HN or simply want to follow the latest tech news, this app is a must-have. Octal is Incredibly fast, well-designed, and has every feature you need - whether you’re a lurker or an active contributor.

Thank you. I was having some issues with larger text sizes being out of place. Also, not sure if it’s intentional, but the scroll button on the bottom right jumps pretty unexpectedly. I would expect it to “go-to-bottom”, but it kind of does whatever it wants. Seems like most issues, among others, were fixed – thank you, and best

None better.. There is no better, more thought out, and more consistent HN client on any platform.

Broken login and likes on iOS 16.0. On iOS 16.0 I can log in and see my own profile, but if I try to like or favorite anything I get a “Something went wrong please try again later” error. If I close the app and reopen it, I am signed out and have to sign back in. EDIT: Just kidding it’s because I turned on HN’s “noprocrast” setting… that’s what I get for trying to be more productive. 😂

Bait and switch. Top-level comment jump navigation button was included in the free tier and even got improvements over time. Now the feature has been paywalled and completely disabled in the free tier. That’s not a way to treat your existing users.

My latest replacement HN client. I was previously using an older HN client with some issues. After recently moving to this one I am happy with the change and would recommend to others. Clean interface and well worth the IAP upgrade.

Best HN app for me. Only feature I wish it had was left swipes on comments to collapse the top parent (like Apollo).

MAKE THE COMMENT HIT TARGET LARGER PLEASE. Overall, as an aggregator - this is a solid app. There is one problem which drives me absolutely crazy: in order to read the comments, which is half the value of HN - hitting the comment button below the article title, you must touch this impossibly tiny hit-box which takes you 4-5 presses and eye-squints to get right. The other 85% of the time you end up opening the article again on your native browser. It's infuriating.

Love it, clean and easy to use. Does exactly what I need, and gets out of my way otherwise. The interface is easy to navigate and looks good. I never think about it, just like the actual HackerNews site.

Great app, daily user. Bought premium not because I like to comment but that the app is so great I felt like not paying was a crime. One feature request - please add a “swipe left to dismiss” when I click on a post. I click on a post and the post comes in from the right - after I am done reading my finger needs to go to the top of the screen to click the back button. I’d like to be able to just swipe LTR to go back to the posts list. Thanks!

Great app for my HN Addiction. Love the app! My only request is to make the upvote arrow bigger. It’s pretty tiny and often when trying to upvote, you end up clicking the story headline and being whisked to the thread instead of upvoting.

very good, a few minor annoyances. app is very responsive and designed well. only a couple minor issues with it 1. occasionally you get a “something went wrong” message when trying to edit or vote, and it would be nice to have a better understanding of what exactly the issue was 2. you can swipe back but can’t swipe forward! sometimes i accidentally swipe out of an article or comments and there is no way to instantly return to the view i was just on, meaning sometimes you have to re-find the article in the list and scroll through all the comments you’ve already read. please implement a swipe forward/return to last view!

By far the best HN reader!. Super slick and pleasant to use. All the others I’ve tried have had either convoluted interfaces or over simplified ones.

Reall nice app, but writing replies is painful. One of the best iOS HN clients. Gladly paid a few bucks for the premium upgrade. The one issue I have is the interface for writing comments seems a little broken. If the comment I’m trying to reply to is long, that comment will occupy the screen and block/cover up the comment I’m composing (along with the on-screen keyboard). I’d like to see this fixed and then this will likely be my go-to HN app. In the meantime, I’ll probably stick to MiniHack or just the website if I intend to write comments. Either way thanks for all the work that clearly went into this.

Room for improvement. Just purchased the app based on the reviews but unfortunately it's not quite there yet. Couple issues: - no true black theme - no automatic switching between light/dark mode - can only see top stories, can't filter by Show HN, Ask HN, noob stories for example - when looking at activity, clicking on your comment will link back to main article but without any what to upvote for example I think with the improvements it can be one of the best apps for sure.

Best HN reader app. This is my preferred HN reader on both iPhone and iPad. When Octal stopped working for a little while, I tried out a number of other readers and seriously started missing Octal’s features and smooth interface. Great to see Octal updates once again!

Best HN app plus a suggestion!. This is the best app for HN, and love how the developer is responsive. The only suggestion I have is to somehow distinguish the quoted comment from the reply for better readability. Instead of the > symbol used now to indicate a quoted comment, maybe change the font color to more clearly distinguish. For instance, in Apollo for Reddit, the quoted comment is grey with a margin line to clearly differentiate between the quoted comment and the actual reply.

Good HN App. This is the best HN reader I have found, and I’ve tried quite a few. I paid for full/premium, which allows you to post/comment and offers more customization options. I haven’t encountered any bugs and overall it’s a solid interface to one of my favorite sites for a reasonable price.

Good app with refresh issues. This app is very well made with one issue: when refreshing the feed, the refresh indicator stops immediately, but the feed itself doesn’t refresh until seconds later. The indicator should be active during the full refresh time.

Been using for years. Been using for years, and still the best. Still gets enhancements, updates, and bug fixes.

$10 to unlock basic functionality is a bit steep. The app looks ok, seems to function well other than being quite slow to load comments compared to other apps, but $10 to unlock basic functionality seems a bit expensive.

Great HN reader. Since YCombinator have decided to leave HN almost unusable on mobile, an app is more or less compulsory. My previous favourite minihack seems to be defunct, but Octal is perhaps even better. Very functional and grabbing an image to use in the story description is a nice touch and improves on the website.

Excellent User Interface!. Amazed by how user friendly it is

Good app, now horrible site. The app is good, if a little obtuse in how it handles comment collapsing. Unfortunately the site the app builds itself around is no longer a bastion of intelligent commentary and discussion, and has devolved into politics and feigned intellectualism. The internet, like TV, has now become simply mindless entertainment for the masses.

Very good interface. Works well for both browsing and commenting. Just missing the ability to see points on your own comments.

Fantastic. Love using Octal. Navigation controls feel great on my Max.

A wonderful app. It makes browsing Hacker News so pleasant. I spend a lot of time in this app and am very grateful for it.

Can’t collapse comments. I can’t work out how to collapse comment threads, which is the main reason I’d want to use an app over the website. Besides that, works fine.

High quality app!. Reminds me of Apollo for Reddit. Really high quality!

Simply the best. Can’t go wrong with this app, the best mobile app for HN.

The best HN app I’ve ever used. Let’s be honest, HN news in mobile safari is pretty crap. This app is fast, looks nice, and makes the commenting experience a joy to look through and it lets you sign in and comment! I’m giving this 5 stars, but I do wish it had support for Opener.

Elegant!. Very simply HN reader. If you just need the news, comments, and a simple way to stay up to date quickly and easily: this is it. Great job to the dev(s) for making such a beautiful and easy to use app!

👉 Are you looking for an Adsense alternative advertising platform?

Adsterra is the most preferred ad network for those looking for an alternative to AdSense. Adsterra is the ideal choice for new sites with low daily traffic. In order to advertise on the site in Adsterra, like other ad networks, a certain traffic limit, domain age, etc. is required. There are no strict rules. Sign up!

Android version please.. Please get this on Android in this exact means. I don’t care what you do. This is the best client for HN in existence. It is a crime to open source itself that this isn’t on more open platforms. iOS is the best closed platform, but this app needs to be on other platforms. Worth a purchase on my Apple account by far for this iOS experience however. By Apples standards I think you made a perfect app.

Best HN client. This is an incredible UX app for hacker news!

Shameless copy. Not a fan …

Features paywalled. Basic features like jumping between comments were put behind a paywall recently. It makes the app no better than opening the webpage.

need to buy premium for ... .. the option to swipe to navigate back

How do you upvote comments?. Is their no user guide for this app?

Can’t downvote. Downvoted for not having downvoting.

The app is horribly slow. How can this app be worse than the website?

Great with a few bugs. There is an INCREDIBLY DISTRACTING stutter when scrolling the feed and it hurts my eyes. Developer, dequeue your UITableViewCells please...

Great HN Reader. Really well done and totally worth it for the paid version.

Best App Ever!. Beautiful UI design and constant updates with great features. Can’t ask for more. Keep up the good work!!!!

Masterpiece. Wonderful App Designed by this Awesome Developer☝️

Great app!. I’ve used lots of Hacker News clients, both on android and iOS, but always rollbacked to the web view. This is the first app that really has a sensible design(I like how it resembles the newly designed App Store, is it intended?) and is usable(has search... etc). This is THE app to view Hacker News in iOS. (Would be great if you could make a macOS one...) One thing I found strange is that when I select parts of comments, it cannot be ‘unselected’ when touching other parts of the text. I’m pretty sure it’s a bug... Thanks for this great app!

Always a problem to login. I can’t login to my Hacker News account, despite having valid credentials. Has never worked.

Voting?. Will there be support for voting anytime soon? Save for this, it's the best HN app on the store right now

Blown away by the polish and speed. A phenomenal free app. Thank you to the developer.

Really clean experience. Worth it. GJ to the developer

Best HN client. But unfortunately the Firebase API is blocked in China, so if you are in China you need a VPN to use it.

Incessant prompting for payment degrades experience. All of the settings are presented as though they are usable, but as soon as you begin to engage, they trick you by prompting you to pay. It’s disingenuous. It should not enablePremium controls or show that it’s hidden behind a premium flag moreConspicuously. Instead, You, the user, attempt to do things, and it throws alerts in front of you prompting you to pay. Very obnoxious. Would not recommend

App of choice for reading HN. This is my app of choice for reading HN. Good UI and readability.

Great app for hnews but buying premium is a rip off. Great app but I have to leave a 1 star review because I paid for the app on iPad os and I have to pay again for the iPhone version? That’s unacceptable, I will give a full 5 stars if my purchase is enabled on iPhone as well

My favorite HN app. Updating my review to 5 stars after the app moved away from the old Androidish UI.

Love this..but. Great app and use it across all my devices. But please add the ability to export bookmarks/favorites.

Apple Store Stuff w Octal. I think this is a good little app. Sadly though it highlighted the individuals using App Store analytics as a day job being involved in a very serious stalking campaign. Have three identified- one uses identity at Facebook PickleRick and targeting a woman I do not know on OpieAnthony forums. Google, Apple, Facebook insiders confirmed. Even a Shell guy. Gettting paid to harass people while doing their day job. Physically violent in numerous cases. Once app was installed they started changing user names on their ycombinator comments. What would appear to be a bit of fun gaslighting is actually quite serious with some human casualties. At least it is fundamentally clear the individuals involved have Apple Store install tracking and cross platform tracking ability. This really needs to be looked into architecturally and procedurally by Apple. Nestled in this group of folks changing names for comments is someone doing quite a lot of physical harm. Apple product security email has done no response on existing reported issues trying to get traceability for a police report as most of the situation is so odd it is hard to believe without facts and logs. Yet it is happening. I really need to identify the parties tracking my app installs. Like a lineup. I would surely be able to identify them if I had their true identity, I know enough about them. They really need to be incorporated into a law enforcement report. Reporting “anonymous” goes nowhere. It is a pretty horrifying drugging and violence case in my case, citing disinformation as motive. The app itself was decent. I like aggregated tech and security news.

Excellent!. Perfect app for reading hacker news.

best hn reader. hands down one of the best iPhone hackers news reader, however on iPad its really not optimised for two columns view at all

Commenting and voting broken. Even after paying for premium, voting and commenting just produces an error.

always solid. favorite client

+1. Cheers, Daniel!

Pretty useless unless you pay for Pro. Collapsing comment chains is a second class feature. You can’t comment on threads unless you purchase the premium version.

Pay to hide thumbnails: lol. No way I'm paying to disable a feature no one asked for

Why pay for this app when there are better free version?!. Terrible money grab

Impractical design choice behind paywall. I don’t care about the username of who posted the article. I care about the website the article is hosted on. This should be displayed below the title with the comments and likes instead of some random user’s username. I need to see the website to see if the article is paywalled (e.g. the economist) or short/long (Twitter vs NYT). But the website being on it’s own line above the title even in compact mode wastes space. The fact that compact mode is behind the paywall means I found out I won’t use the app after paying. That’s left a bad taste in my mouth.

You’re welcome for our support!. This app be great!

makes hn mobile a real good thing. i recommend octal to all my hackery friends!

The best HN app on iOS. EDIT: This originally was a negative view of a recent update which made things 2-pane without providing an option to continue using the 1-pane mode, but the old UI options were restored within the week. Before this update I felt this was a 3.5-4/5 star app - solid UI and performance, though my one gripe against it are gripes against vanilla HN in general. I feel something like hckrnews.com provides a better discovery experience than the raw HN feed and would love to see Octal have better curation controls in that regard, but as far as unadulterated HN experiences, Octal definitely does the best job on iOS. However, because of the developer quickly responding to (admittedly grouchy/negative on my part) feedback by taking on the additional burden of continuing to support the old UI I figure the extra star is easily justified and I’m going to pay for the app to support it. Thanks!

I love this app. :)
