There are hundreds of meditation apps on the market, and several do a fine job of teaching the basic principles of mindfulness. But most present the practice as though it were an ancient version of an executive stress ball—whereas it’s more like the Large Hadron Collider. Join Sam Harris—neuroscientist, philosopher, and best-selling author—on a meditation course for beginners and experienced meditators alike.
The purpose of meditation isn’t merely to reduce stress or to make you feel better in the moment—it’s to make fundamental discoveries in the laboratory of your own mind.
“I’ve been incredibly impressed with this app. Whether you want to sharpen your mind or experience more peace, this can help in dramatic fashion. The power of its progression is hard to overstate.”

Sam and the waking up team truly want people to understand the great benefits of mindful meditation. One does not have to be non religious to enjoy what mindfulness can offer. It’s simply a way of being able to better enjoy the world and our own thoughts in spite of all the constant stimuli we are so accustomed to facing. I highly recommend downloading this app and giving it a try. As a college student, it has been immensely beneficial!
Beautiful app made by beautiful people. Thank you so much, please try it out.
The absolute best choice I’ve made in a long time.
This is undoubtedly the best meditation app I have tried and I have gave them all a try. Sam and his team have put together a program that anyone can benefit from. I highly recommend!
I’ve been meditating with different apps for years. Some are whimsical and game-like and others are kind of boring. This one, for me, has been the most engaging. The exercises are always changing and they feel very participatory. It’s a fantastic way to begin your day and ground yourself in your own personal reality. Highly recommend.
I’ve never attempted mediation before and I feel like I’ve started the best way possible - this app. I feel like Sam is a close friend, spending 10 minutes a day together 🤭 I am very curious what lies behind door day 50... I hope it continues to challenge me. Thank you for all you do with this app, Sam.
Love the app helps very much.
It’s only been a day so far, but I get the feeling, if I do this EVERYDAY...it’ll really change my life for the better!
I have been enjoying the Waking Up app since about December of last year. I sat through the first 50 days and learned some different methods that have repeated and been reinforced, even now as I practice with the daily guided meditations. Sam rotates us through these different methods and gives new cues or guiding statements that help to make the path more clear. I got a free version by promising to tell others who seem interested about Waking Up, and in fact have bought the book for two colleagues and a 3 month gift to Waking Up for a colleague. I only wish that I had access to the AMA section, but I think I have to be a regular subscriber which I will do once this year is up, maybe sooner. I’d really love to know more about time spent practicing meditation. These sessions are all ten minutes with a few seconds of reflection at the end, but I haven’t encountered instruction or recommendations about when or why to extend the time spent practicing, including recommendations for more that one session per day. My wife and kids have joined in on the practice a few times, but it’s mostly just me early in the morning. And I usually follow up the practice session by Listening to one of the lessons (another helpful part of the app)or part of a podcast relating to mindfulness. Sam has a podcast called Making Sense which features a variety of guests and topics and has turned me on to several other podcasters. I’ve read Waking Up several times, along with Sam’s other books, and appreciate the secular and usually scientific practical approach. I urge others to check this out, read Waking Up, and practice joining your mind to now.
This app does a better job than anything else out there in introducing gradually the concept and practice of meditation.
I have been using the app for 2 weeks now, and I have already seen changes in my mindset and decreases in the anxieties that I experience daily, purely by being astutely aware of them. I find this invaluable. I can see myself easily taking the techniques I am learning into the future. I highly recommend the app.
In a sea of dogma and quasi-spiritual nonsense, this app is brilliantly positioned to be practical and experiential. It challenges you to really delve into self-inquiry to see if it improves your life. The lesson don’t feel like lectures. They are stimulating and provoke real changes in thinking. This app is not concerned with being a sedative or balm. It is aptly named.
I have been meditating for years trialing various styles and courses and apps and have found Sam’s Waking Up app to be by far my favourite. A short insightful lesson followed by a 10 min meditation really does a great job tying it all together in a way that really makes sense to me. As a musician I spend my day wracking my brain trying to be as creative and productive as possible and in doing so you often hit a wall. I have found no better of braking through these creative barriers than to have a break from the studio and sit and do one of Sam’s lessons and mediations. It’s like a reset button, then I can hit the studio with fresh ears and a new perspective. I have recommended this app to all my friends and family who also all love it.
I just finished my 50th straight day of meditation and I am going to continue the practice. This is the first time I have ever been able to stay with a daily meditation practice. I highly recommend the course. The quality of the content is very high and meditations are somehow both simple and profound.
Great content has made this mediation app make quite a difference in my life. I’ve tried other meditation apps and their content hasn’t quite connected with me. This one is helping me to gain some perspective and appreciation of the thoughts I have. It has made a difference to my cognition so I’m beginning to find I spend less energy on less than helpful circular thoughts.
My only wish was that Sam sounded a little more like James Earl Jones. More of a cherry on top, Sam still has a nice voice
The Waking Up app I have found different to other mediation apps. Sam Harris’s approach mixes the practical tools of mediation with an in-depth knowledge which gives the learner a more rounded experience. Highly recommend
I have been a meditator for many years and a reader of Sam Harris for not so many years. In that time I have tried and used a range of meditation apps. Most I have found to be poorly presented and insufficiently user focused, although Headspace and 10% Happier are better. This app by Sam Harris is in a different league. It is accessible and very well presented. The lessons are helpful. But more significantly it shows respect to the user by taking as given an intelligent interlocutor. Together let’s go see what is knocking around up top. Let’s shine a torch in the dark recesses of our thinking. Let’s together challenge unthinking ways of engaging with light. Let’s shine the light of rational analysis and shoo away some shibboleths of sloppy consciousness. In short, it’s excellent. I highly recommend it.
I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and on the brink of crying for awhile. This App has calmed my mind and made me feel much happier. It reminds me why life is such an amazing gift. I particularly enjoy the mini lessons! Definitely give it a go!
I have done 10 days of meditation so far and am enjoying the structure. Sam has a caring and easy teaching style and I look forward to my daily dose. I’m excited about my progress and have committed to continuing this path. I am a novice in meditation but already feel glimmers it progress. Thank you for this wonderful app which is going to have powerful changes in my life.
